Businesses to complete self-certification to reopen in yellow tier

SB County moves into the yellow tier

Santa Barbara County has met the state’s yellow tier case rate and positivity rate, allowing movement into the less restrictive yellow tier. The move went into effect on Wednesday morning, June 9.

A new Health Officer Order will be issued that includes guidance on business operations in the yellow tier. The order will further ease restrictions and allow more indoor activities, in accordance with the rules and framework of the state’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy.

To qualify for the yellow tier, a region must have an adjusted case rate less than two cases per every 100,000 residents, a testing positivity rate of less than 2%, and less than 2.2% positive tests for the health equity quartile. Santa Barbara County’s adjusted case rate is 0.9 cases per every 100,000 residents, the positivity rate stands at 0.7%, and the positive tests for the health equity quartile stand at 1.0%.

“The vaccines are working, and the state will be lifting most restrictions beginning June 15,” said Dr. Henning Ansorg, Santa Barbara County health officer. “In particular, masking except for in many workplaces will become optional. We all play an important part in defeating this virus and the community as a whole is safer the more persons are fully vaccinated. The vaccines have been shown to be very safe and effective even against newer variants of the virus. If you haven’t done so already, please get vaccinated today.”

Yellow tier regulations include an increase in indoor seating for restaurants to 50% capacity or 200 people maximum (whichever is less); gyms and fitness centers,

If a business has already completed the self-certification during a previous phased reopening, they do not have to complete the attestation again. However, it is recommended to review the state’s industry guidance to reduce risk.

Independence Day parade cancelled

Out of an abundance of caution, the city of Carpinteria has elected to cancel the Independence Day parade this year. The event would have taken place a short time after Governor Gavin Newsom is expected to reopen the state’s economy on June 15. The city stated that given the advanced planning and logistical requirements of such a large-scale event and given that Covid-19 transmission risks are heightened at events drawing large crowds, it will focus on planning a December parade that can celebrate both the holidays and a safe and successful community reopening.

“We will play it safe this time around, which will ensure that we have ample time to plan our next parade without lingering Covid-19 concerns hanging over our heads,” said City Manager David Durflinger.

Mental health crises and therapy facility opens in Santa Maria

After years of preparation, Marian Regional Medical Center will open its new Behavioral Health Outpatient Unit (BHOU) this summer. The facility serves a critical need for Santa Barbara County residents in providing a 24-hour facility for intervention, assessment, evaluation, therapy and support for those experiencing a mental health crisis.

A minimum of 50 inpatient mental health beds are recommended to serve every 100,000 people, and Santa Barbara County currently only has four for every 100,000.

With one out of every eight emergency department visits being behavioral health or substance abuse related, the BHOU will meet local health care needs with specialty trained psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses and support staff.

Coalition to petition for zoning change to Amtrak parking lot

A coalition of local residents have filed a notice of intent with the city of Carpinteria to circulate a petition to change the zoning of the downtown parking lot from general commercial to open space/recreation. The parking lot, located at the Amtrak Station, is owned by the city of Carpinteria and is currently the site of a proposed development project for a boutique hotel (The Surfliner Inn project). Once the petition is approved by the city for circulation, the petitioners have 108 days to secure signatures from 10% of the city’s registered voters (roughly 750). If the threshold is reached, the zoning change will be considered by Carpinteria’s City Council, and if not adopted, could potentially find its way onto the 2022 general election ballot for a public vote.

• Bones found in the Montecito area last month have now been deemed Native American remains by the Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau.

• On Monday, May 24, at approximately 5:12 p.m., deputies responded to the 800-block of Riven Rock Road in Montecito to investigate a report of human remains found while workers were digging a trench for a residential construction project.

Coroner’s detectives and forensics technicians responded to assist deputies and the remains were photographed, collected and transported to the Coroner’s Bureau for further examination. Digging was suspended in the area until further notice.

During the preliminary investigation, coroner’s detectives noted that the bones appeared to be from a non-recent death, were yellowing and in a state of decomposition and deterioration. Detectives also noted that the teeth appeared to have been worn down in a manner that is consistent with a much rougher diet that would cause that type of wear, similar to Native Americans. Coroner’s detectives contacted the State of California Native American Heritage Commission (NAHC) and advised them of the investigation and their preliminary observations.

On June 3, the remains were examined by a forensic anthropology consultant, Dr. Rick Snow at the Coroner’s Bureau in Santa Barbara. Dr. Snow also visited the residence where the remains were found to ensure that there were not any additional unearthed remains or artifacts. After his examinations, Dr. Snow concluded that the remains are those of a Native American male of unknown age.

We join our combined voices with those of the Carpinteria Valley Association and individual Carpinterians regarding concerns over project density, parking impacts, traffic congestion, Monte Vista Park safety issues and skyline view corridor impacts. We add to these our recognition of the importance of a strong buffer zone between agricultural operations and urban land uses. In the words of the Santa Barbara County Subdivision Standards and Principles, “The intent of agricultural buffers is to minimize potential conflict originating from residential and other non-agricultural uses.”

The Board of Supervisors furthers this position in the county’s Right to Farm Ordinance stating, “The Board of Supervisors finds that residential development adjacent to agricultural land and operations often leads to restrictions on farm operations to the detriment of the adjacent agricultural uses and economic viability of the county’s agricultural industry as a whole.”

Clearly the concerns and rationale 25 years ago are as applicable today, if not more so, as housing and development pressures collide with intelligent, forward-looking planning. At the same time, we appreciate more than ever our open space, locally grown produce, small town feel, and balanced rural/urban synergies.

On June 8, the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department reported 34,547, confirmed cases of Covid-19 since the start of the pandemic. Countywide, Covid-19 has taken the lives of 451 people, 21 in the South County communities of Carpinteria, Montecito and Summerland, where there have been 1,404 confirmed infections.

Public health has also reported that 45.7% of the county’s residents are now fully vaccinated. In the South County region, which includes the residents from Goleta to Carpinteria, 54.7% of the population has been fully vaccinated.

New landscape contractor keeps the city clean and green

If you’ve been to downtown Carpinteria or visited a city park lately, the vibrant, healthy landscaping has likely caught your eye. That’s because a massive weeding, pruning and planting effort is now underway by new city contractor Showscapes Urban Landcare Management.

INITIATIVE TO SAVE OUR DOWNTOWN AND BEACH PARKING LOT On May 18, 1989, the City acquired the Downtown and Beach Parking Lot#3, and signed a deed agreement to accept this property from Southern Pacific for PUBLIC PURPOSES.

NOTICE OF INTENT TO CIRCULATE PETITION SAVE OUR DOWNTOWN AND BEACH PARKING LOT INITIATIVE Notice is hereby given by the persons whose names appear hereon of their intention to circulate a petition within the City of Carpinteria for the purpose of proposing amendments to the City’s General Plan land use designation map and text and to the City’s zoning map and zoning ordinance. A statement of the reasons for the proposed action as contemplated in the petition is as follows: This initiative changes the zoning of our Downtown and Beach Parking Lot from General Commercial to Open Space/ Recreation, to preserve and provide protection for existing public parking and general open space. For the last five years, more than a thousand Carpinterians have spoken, written and expressed their opposition to the leasing of public land and/or the development of a boutique hotel on our Downtown and Beach Parking Lot without avail.

Carpinteria needs to maintain its existing free, convenient and safe public parking to accommodate beachgoers, business employees, consumers, tourists and train passengers. We also need to safeguard the coastal urban wildlife open space corridor south of the railroad tracks, while preserving mountain views. These components are integral to our small town, friendly, noncommercial character.

CALL TO ACTION: Carpinteria’s public Downtown and Beach Parking Lot is in danger of private development through a long-term lease for a privately owned hotel. This Initiative lets Carpinterians show that they want to keep this property as public land for parking purposes, preserving the Downtown and Beach Parking Lot, and keeping the Coastal Open Space Corridor south of the railroad tracks free of parking lots. Carpinteria Skate Foundation turns to community to build visionary new skatepark CVN REPORT

The Carpinteria Skate Foundation is ready to ride and says the time is now to “Build that Park!” To get there, the foundation has turned to the community to raise the final funding to transform a long-simmering vision into one of the finest skateparks on the West Coast.

On Monday, June 21, “International Go Skate Day,” the public is invited to join Carpinteria Skate Foundation at 2 p.m. for a skate parade down Carpinteria Avenue to the future site of the Carpinteria skatepark. Event organizers hope the day will galvanize supporters as a kickoff for the “Summer of Skating,” and help to make 2021 the year that the skatepark gets built.

All who want to participate should meet at The Good Plow restaurant (formerly Foster’s Freeze) at 5205 Carpinteria Ave. and skate the ¼ mile to City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. for a gathering and skate contest at the future site of Carpinteria skatepark. Event organizers will then hold a ceremonial groundbreaking.

“We are serious. Carp families are serious. The city and business community are serious. June 21 will be a symbolic day for gathering support, presenting the plan while standing at the future skatepark site and closing the funding gap to build the park,” said Jason Lesh, a founding board member with Carpinteria Skate Foundation.

Designed by Dreamland Skateparks, the Carpinteria Skatepark will include features for all ages and abilities. Beginners will be able to pop their first ollie,

while Olympic level athletes shred legit bowls and rails. The unique park will be built to inspire creativity and provide a healthy outlet for all ages in an inclusive sport. A skateable stage, picnic tables and public amenities also make the future skatepark an ideal meeting place for community events, competitions and concerts.

The Carpinteria Skate Foundation launched in 2009 and has since worked to develop plans and a partnership with the city of Carpinteria to build the park on public land. Overall, the group has raised $720,000 and needs a further $450,000 to break ground and complete the project.

“More than just a fun place to skate and a perfect outlet for energetic people, this park will be a destination for skaters from all over the West Coast,” said Julia Mayer, Carpinteria Skate Foundation board member. “We envision the park as this killer skating venue a few miles from world-renowned Rincon Point, which has been an incubator for pro surfers for generations. There’s this crossover between the two sports that’s so perfect.

People will hear about it, and say, ‘No way! Let’s go!’”

The future site of the skatepark, adjacent to Carpinteria City Hall and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office Substation, has been occupied by cityowned heavy equipment and the remains of a defunct roller hockey rink. By International Go Skate Day on June 21, the site will be cleared and prepped for the arrival of guests and for the community to begin to fully imagine the value of a

brand new skatepark.

Following the June 21 Groundbreaking Ceremony, Carpinteria Skatepark will commence an ambitious fundraising plan aimed at reaching the entire community through engaging events and creative calls to action. Large donors will have the opportunity to “purchase” elements of the park like the event stage and ramps.

Smaller donors can purchase bricks or become part of the community effort to construct the park in myriad other ways.

“We formed this committee in 2009 to build the park, and have come so far,” said Peter Bonning, founding board member of Carpinteria Skate Foundation.

“Really, our board has been looking for this opportunity for Carpinteria since we were kids in the 90s. Now we have plans and permits in hand – closer than we’ve ever been – so we want to make 2021 the year that this gets done for our kids and the whole community.”

This world-class skatepark can and should be built in 2021. It’ll become a destination for athletes from up and down the West Coast. Skating, like surfing, is now an Olympic event, and Rincon Point is already a primetime arena for the best surfers on the planet. Pairing Rincon with an amazing skatepark would cement Carpinteria’s reputation as an unrivaled destination and breeding ground for athletes in important sports that are no longer considered alternatives.

Look around after school and see kids all around burning energy in constructive ways. Once there’s a skatepark, they’ll flock to it and show impressive dedication to improving their skills. Carpinteria Middle School already has an afterschool skate club.

I’m hopeful and excited that Carpinteria families and businesses will come together to invest in the park this summer. The Carpinteria Skate Foundation has been raising funds for over 10 years only to see costs grow. Investments in the skatepark made this summer will bear immediate results. Paying attention to seniors

Roberta Lehtinen’s article published in CVN on May 27, “Caring for Seniors in every stage of the Pandemic,” was a welcome perspective. I am relatively new to the whole “senior citizen” lifestyle, being only 67 years old, but the problems for seniors that Lehtinen discussed, such as, isolating, getting exercise and self-care, are some of the issues that I have begun to experience.

Growing old is not for the weak of heart. I am grateful she included resources for seniors. I assume that my life situation will decline rather than improve as the years go by, and it is nice to know that there is somewhere that I can look to for assistance. I would also like to mention (since I am a grumpy and outspoken senior) that while I am happy for Gay Pride month, and their cool flag, seniors do not get much attention, nor do we have a flag, nor do we have a month just celebrating us. Seniors suffer from age discrimination, from depression, loneliness and abuse. I have heard about Gay Pride for at least 20 years! When do we old folks get a flag that flies over the Carpinteria sky, and our own month? As Mike Wondolowski pointed out in his excellent column in CVN recently, “Beefing and Moaning,” I just want to be heard.

Power and control

Today’s Democratic Party is all about power and control. And nowhere is that more evident than in the state of California. Gov. Newsom has ruled over California with an iron fist. He has issued some of the most severe lockdown restrictions, has been intent on closing churches and has been very slow to open businesses and schools. As a result, many small businesses have closed permanently, children have lost possibly a year of their education and many people have suffered from mental illnesses or are still in a state of fear.

On Friday, Gov. Newsom revealed

his latest grab for continued power. He went back on his word to lift the state of emergency for California on June 15.

Never mind that he earlier boasted that California has “the lowest case rate and the highest vaccination rates.”

It is time for California to wake-up.

Gov. Newsom does not care about average Californians, small businesses or for the education of our children. He is all about not giving up his power and control. The time has come. We need a new governor who will look out for the best interest of California and its residents.

To stop the bulldozers, to preserve San Marcos Foothills and its wildlife, to keep paws, hooves and feet traveling its trails, to see this land alive with native plants rather than buried under luxury homes. Thanks to the tireless work of many volunteers and donations of thousands of generous people, I am optimistic about the future of the San Marcos Foothills. CUSD enrollment falls

Percentage of socioeconomically disadvantaged students rises

BY EVELYN SPENCE During the Carpinteria Unified School District’s regular June 8 meeting, Superintendent Diana Rigby went over the district’s local control accountability plan, which tackles student achievement, parent involvement, school climate and other factors, aiming to improve student retention and achievement.

“Our focus is on the most vulnerable student population, which is the economically disadvantaged, English learners and foster children,” Rigby said.

Rigby noted that across the district, total enrollment fell from 2,205 during the 2017-2018 school year to 2,092 during the 2020-2021 school year; the percentage of English language learners fell from 33.7% in 2017-18 to 28% in 2020-21; the percentage of socioeconomically disadvantaged students rose from 63.9% in 2017-18 to 71.7% in 2020-21; and the percentage of students with disabilities rose from 10.6% in 2017-18 to 14% in 2020-21.

The number of Hispanic students also rose slightly from 73.6% in 2017-18 to 74.9% in 2020-21, while the number of white students fell slightly from 22.4% in 2017-18 to 22.1% in 2020-21.

“I do want to make a note that this year, I think the significant increase (in the percentage of socioeconomically disadvantaged students) was really related to self-reporting. It was not an application basis, so the percentage is not determined based on application, it was based on parents determining they were economically disadvantaged,” Rigby said.

For the 2019 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) ELA standards, 54% of fifth grade students met or exceeded CAASPP ELA standards, compared to 47% of eighth grade students and 56% of 11th grade students.

Approximately 46% of fifth grade students also met or exceeded CAASPP math standards, compared to 41% of eighth grade students and 41% of 11th grade students.

“That is not acceptable. The ultimate goal is that we need at least 85% performing at or above grade level, but each year we’re going to set a goal (of 60%) that is more reasonable,” Rigby said.

Rigby added that 13.5% of students are considered long-term English learners, meaning they do not achieve English proficiency by the time they graduate high school.

For student engagement in 2020, the data showed a 95.9% average daily attendance rate, with 12.7% chronic absenteeism and a 2.7% suspension rate. There were no expulsions. The graduation rate was also 93.3%.

Rigby said the district plans to help struggling students in several ways, including reducing elementary student to teacher ratio to 20:1; monitoring weekly student progress; and revisiting instruction in reading and math to increase student achievement, among other programs and interventions.

District budget

Maureen Fitzgerald, assistant superintendent, said the district is projecting a 5.23% rate in property taxes, compared to the May revision projection of 5.07%.

Currently, CUSD teacher salaries range from $47,777 at the lowest end to $93,485 at the highest, Fitzgerald said.

For the 2021-2022 school year, Fitzgerald said that 80% of the district’s revenue – or $28,059,366 – will come from state aid and property taxes, compared to 3% in local revenue, 12% in state revenue and 5% in federal revenue.

For expenditures, 83% of the district’s expenditures – or $29,167,489 – will go to salaries and benefits, compared to 12% services and operating, 3% books and supplies and 2% on bus leases.

Tentative agreement with teachers union

The board approved a tentative agreement with Carpinteria Association of United School Employees (CAUSE), which includes a 2% salary increase for CAUSE members. This amounts to $343,979 annually.

Wendy Jones mixes up next baking adventure

She said she’s not quite sure what the next step for Yodelayheehoo Bakes is, but said she is happy her family has embraced her new adventure.

“We have been in Carpinteria for seven years now and have definitely planted deep roots,” Jones said.

“For me, (love) happens to be baking cake for others. When you bring a cake into the room something marvelous happens. Anticipation fills the air and as the cake is set on the table everyone exhales and all eyes are on it. I love being a part of that. I am honored to have the privilege of baking cake for people’s most sacred moments. Something magical manifests that is unexplainable.”

MADE IN CARPINTERIA B R E N D A TA N Ten years ago, cupcake shop Whodidily – then located on Coast Village Road in Montecito – closed, despite enjoying a thriving business for four years. Former CEO and owner Wendy Jones had been featured on Food Network and catered to an exclusive clientele.

However, she also had three daughters, and the shop’s workload and family responsibilities were taking their toll.

“Since closing the shop, I’ve dedicated my time to my family,” Jones, who moved to Carpinteria seven years ago, said. “It was a much-needed change in comparison to working 80+ hours a week.”

Now, after 10 years of focusing on her family, Jones is ready to reignite her love for cake under the name Yodelayheehoo Bakes, what she calls the “grown-up” version of Whodidily.

“I joke that I broke up with cake and we’re dating again. This time around, I’m extremely aware of time management and my priorities,” she said.

“I know it’s silly, but I think of Madonna who constantly recreated herself over and over and (was) always discovering a deeper self. It’s about being open to who you are becoming and who you were made to be. I’m committed to enjoying this gift I was given every day.”

Yodelayheehoo first made its debut in Carpinteria at Pacific Health Foods on Mother’s Day, offering a paleo vanilla bean cake at the shop; next, the business is taking its mini-cupcakes to Montecito Deli on June 15, which will carry Jones’ red velvet cupcakes and organic vanilla bean cupcakes, which are vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free.

Jones was inspired to start baking more than 15 years ago, after she rented a house in Montecito for a summer and fell in love with the coastland. Her close friend Megan Simon, owner of Beautiful You in Montecito, began to send her clients for Valentine’s Day. When overwhelming numbers of requests for cakes began to roll in, Jones took a risk and moved from Bakersfield to open her cupcake shop. “(My shop) became my home quickly and the community embraced Whodidily.

So many relationships were nurtured in that space. All of the employees became like our family,” she said.

Whoodidily never invested much in advertising. Instead, it sowed the seeds of community with free cake; when the business had leftover cakes, Jones said she would give away free cakes to keep the “integrity of a freshly baked product.”

Although Jones is extremely confident in the quality of her products, she thinks buying them isn’t just about the cake itself.

Wendy Jones has returned to baking with her latest adventure, Yodelayheehoo Bakes.

“I think (buying cake is about) the experience of being loved,” Jones said.

“There is something fascinating about reminiscing about your childhood birthday cake. Some people tell me they don’t really care for cake. Then I proceed to ask them what cake they had for their birthday growing up. They usually pause and a smile starts to crack at the edge of their lips.”

“Slowly the memories start to bubble up to the surface and take them back to the place where they were celebrated and loved. This is what I think the people come for.”

Another source of Jones’ inspiration for her new business come from two of her long-term patrons, who have developed into dear friends and mentors: Christine Costner and Kathy Ireland.

“Christine Costner has been asking me for years to create a clean menu,” Jones explained. “Her family often taste-tests new items, and I can always count on her to give me valid feedback.

Kathy Ireland is another inspiration for me. Besides being an exceptional and loving human being, she has been one of my biggest cheerleaders. She is always ordering from me and embracing my new creations.”

She said both women have had a “huge impact” on her, “not just regarding cake, but spiritually as well.”

“I’m grateful that they believe in me and continue to ask me for cake.”

Yodelayheehoo is currently offering three menus: the Whodidily OG menu, the BBOG (Big Bang Organic Gang) menu, and the Golden Unicorn Menu.

Elise Unruh held her last performance with the Muses on Saturday.

Prominent CUSD performing arts teacher retires after 45 years of teaching

After 45 years of teaching, Carpinteria High School and Carpinteria Middle School band, choir and performing arts teacher Elise Unruh is retiring. Unruh held her last performance with CHS’s famed Muses on Saturday.

“The reality that it was the last time I’m going do this hasn’t totally sunk in, and it probably won’t (for a while),” Unruh said.

Unruh has spent the last 35 years of teaching in Carpinteria and led the CHS Muses during her time at CHS, while also teaching band.

Growing up, Unruh said she was born into a musical family, and said she “always knew I was going to play an instrument.”

“Back then there were no female conductors, but it never really worried me that much,” she said.

She pursued her undergraduate degree

at UC Santa Barbara, first majoring in chemistry, before she switched to music.

After graduating from UCSB, she taught elementary school for eight years before moving to high school – she missed being involved with a marching band, she said.

“This job was the perfect fit,” she said.

Teaching during Covid-19, however, presented challenges for performing arts teachers across the county, and Unruh was no exception. However, she was determined to still provide a performing arts education for her students; she incorporated history and music theory lessons into online learning and performed skits with her students online.

She also incorporated digital theater creation lessons for her band students, and for the Muses, she found online crash courses in the history of theater.

“Teaching performing arts during Covid-19 was a nightmare,” she said. “If you’re not performing, it’s not authentic.”

However, Unruh said she’s happy that she and her students were able to return to school for the last six weeks of the year and perform one last hurrah.

She doesn’t know yet who is taking her position as teacher of the Muses, but said the district is “totally committed” to finding someone who has as passion for musical theater.

“Muses was here when I came here.

I just joined the program. So when the person who started it left, it’s been my responsibility, but it’s not my thing, it’s a Carp High thing,” she said. “It’s very unique when you compare theater programs at other schools compared to what we do.”

What’s next for this longtime educator? Unruh said she plans to travel, marking off places on her where-to-go-next list.

“I definitely have mixed feelings,” she said. “I think it’s time to do this but I’m definitely going to miss the kids. “

CLUB SCENE Carpinterians tackle their own cardboard tomols

As the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning’s 10th year anniversary of the Tomol Interpretive Play Area approaches, Carpinterians are readying their construction skills and preparing to show off their talents.

Club president Karen Glancy has begun to tackle her own cardboard tomol ahead of the celebration, which will take place at Linden Field on Saturday, June 19 at 11 a.m. All Carpinterians – families and solo builders – are welcome, and tomols can be as big as can be carried.

Eureka! celebrates fifth cohort of graduates

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria’s fifth cohort of the Eureka! program graduated high school this spring, preparing to transfer to colleges this fall. The 13 women in the program will be heading to several colleges across the state, including UC Berkeley, SBCC, UC Los Angeles and Chapman University.

This year’s Eureka! graduates are Alondra Lemus, Emily Carranza Saldana, Mitzi Marin Alpizar, Stephanie Chavez-Marquez, Hannia Hernandez, Mayra Ramirez, Isa Alarcon, Diana Marquez, Kaitlyn Casas, Laura Flores, Janeth Hernandez, Joana Romero and Lupita Villarreal.

The program, which last five years, helps young women with college readiness, encouraging them to explore science, technology, engineering and math. The program was first launched in 2013 by Girls Inc. and introduces young women to female role models, supporting them throughout their educational careers.

Currently, 83 young women are enrolled in the program.

“We are beyond proud to see this group of dedicated young women achieve this significant milestone and prepare for the next big step in their academic and professional careers,” said Jamie Collins, executive director of Girls Inc. Carpinteria.

“Our girls have pushed past significant obstacles – including the challenges of this unprecedented year – but their determination to creating a path for success never wavered. We know they will continue to carry the strong, smart and bold values with them in this next stage and look forward to seeing their continued growth.”

I had originally planned to write about health and technology but that will have to wait for a future column as another idea has taken center stage for me. Let me take a minute to explain why I shifted gears.

As I mentioned previously, I am on the Board of Directors for the Alcazar Theatre and I also serve as the technical director.

I recently volunteered to upgrade the theater sound system so the movies can be supported by full surround sound, the way they were meant to be experienced.

When Metropolitan Theaters vacated the space in 2010, they left 12 JBL Pro Surround sound speakers in place. Aside from a poorly executed attempt to get a few of them working from a consumer grade AV receiver a few years ago, they have not been in service.

From the first time I stepped into the Alcazar Theatre, I knew I had to do whatever was necessary to upgrade the technology of this gem of a theater. The upgrade has been going on for a couple of years now and it started with Control4 to provide a platform for automation and control. The first devices to be automated were the lights. I did the same thing for the Castro House and it is older than the Alcazar, having been built in 1902. The Alcazar was built in 1928.

Control4 is a very cool system that allows you to totally integrate the systems in your home or business, utilizing a unified network approach with diverse connectivity paths that enable you to connect both locally and remotely to all your systems. The systems you can manage and control are: lighting; security; entertainment; computer network; surveillance video; communications and HVAC. Because a Control4 system is retrofit-

table it is a perfect candidate for older buildings without the need for a massive remodel or renovation. It is an upgrade that improves livability, useability and convenience – not to mention enhanced security. You can keep it simple or take it up as far as you want with touchscreen control interface, smart phone interface and even voice control.

Meanwhile, back at the Alcazar, we are presently doing limited lighting control and I will be adding additional functionality to control the Outlaw Mdl 990 surround sound processor/preamp, BluRay player, stage lights, movie screen and thermostats. The new surround sound upgrade will be ready soon. I am planning a free movie night so everyone can get a taste and discover an immersive experience as the movie makers intended.

Another new addition to the technology you will find at the Alcazar is an assisted listening system that will allow our guests with hearing aids to receive an audio channel designed specifically for them. This is a loop system like the ones you will find at larger venues.

There is a key component when it comes to movies: “the willing suspension of disbelief.” A good movie draws you in and provides a much-needed escape from the world you left when you entered the theater. DIY succulent planter workshop offered at Community Garden

The Carpinteria Library staff invite families to the Carpinteria Community Garden Park this Friday, June 11 at 2 p.m. for a make-your-own hanging succulent planter workshop.

The free outdoor program is designed for children ages 6 – 10 and will provide all materials needed for participants to paint their own terracotta pots and learn how to macrame.

Local student tackles curriculum to teach others about debris flow

Local Bishop Diego High School senior Luke Williams, spurred after the horrific January 9 Montecito debris flow in spring 2018, is now passing along his knowledge about the debris flow and local geology to local students at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School.

Williams, who was also recently chosen as Jr. Carpinterian of the Year finalist, said his family used to live in Montecito, but moved to Carpinteria after the debris flow. The mudslides damaged his house along Olive Mill Road.

“I was personally affected, but not nearly as bad as some other people.

And it was through this tragedy and the circumstances that I decided it would be prudent to pass along some knowledge to the middle-schoolers,” he said. “Southern California has a unique geology. I think knowledge is power. I thought it would be a good way to make good of this situation by teaching some of the middle schoolers about this geology.”

“One thing I really wanted to share was that my curriculum started as a journey to understand the tragedy. At first, I hoped to explore the effectiveness of the debris basins and the development of the new one, but it morphed into a desire to share what I learned and then became the Middle School curriculum,” he added.

The curriculum tackles both the January 9 Montecito debris flow and the local geology of the area, exploring topographic maps and the characteristics of the area.

It is taught over four one-hour sessions, each of which dive into the history of debris flows and flooding, with some “fun activities” thrown into the mix, Williams said.

Luke Williams, Jr. Carpinteria of the Year finalist, was inspired to teach others about debris flow after the January 9, 2018 Montecito debris flow.

Due to Covid-19, the curriculum itself is taught and managed by Ms. Eun Kim, who teaches sixth grade math and science at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School.

At the beginning of each day of teaching the curriculum, Williams recorded a short video for the students about what they’d be learning. He then joined them over Zoom on the fourth day for a panel discussion.

“Ms. Kim actually really did the bulk of the teaching and I sort of created the curriculum, but I’m obviously very grateful for her commitment to that,” Williams said.

Williams will be heading to Stanford University this fall to pursue a degree in geological sciences.

Bangalore Burgers Sauce ingredients

CHEF RANDY RANDY GRAHAM The other day I was listening to a ZBS Studios audio drama featuring Jack Flanders. It is titled “Dreams of India,” and the city, Bangalore, is featured prominently in the drama.

“Dreams of India” opens with the sounds of an outdoor restaurant in Bangalore where Jack orders chicken vindaloo, sag paneer, dal, poori and Pink Pelican beer. My mouth began to water, and I started craving Indian food. Then my mind drifted to hamburgers and I wondered if there was such a thing as an Indian burger.

So, I searched the internet for “hamburger recipes from India.” After about 20 minutes, I gave up because I found squat.

In other words, I found nothing to suit my needs. Heaven knows I have enough spices – Indian spices included – in my cupboard so surely, I could put something together that would satisfy my hunger.

The trick, I thought, will be to find the right combination of spices.

And I think I did! Here’s what I came up with. It took a few times to get the recipe just right, not because of the spices, but because the texture was difficult to perfect. Know that it takes a little over an hour of prep time for the burgers, but the time and effort are worth it.

Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore was quoted as saying, “Inspiration follows aspiration.” Not sure what that means, but I’m confident that Jack Flanders would. I’m also confident that he’d love my Bangalore Burger. I hope you do too.

Patty directions

1 cup Vegenaise 2 teaspoons sriracha sauce 1½ teaspoons sugar 2 teaspoons distilled vinegar

Place cauliflower, carrots, green beans and peas in a steamer basket. Steam for two minutes. Remove lid, drain and pour mixture into a large mixing bowl.

Set aside.

Patty ingredients

½ cup cauliflower florets (chopped fine) 1 carrot (scrubbed and chopped fine) 6 green beans (chopped) 1/3 cup frozen green peas 1 medium russet potato (peeled and cut into 1-inch slices) 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 1-inch fresh ginger root (grated) ½ medium red onion (chopped fine) 2 stalks green onion (chopped fine) 4-ounce can chopped green chilies (drained) 1 teaspoon garam masala ¼ teaspoon cumin powder ¼ teaspoon red chili powder ¼ teaspoon salt 2 teaspoons cilantro (chopped) ¼ cup plain breadcrumbs 5 tablespoons cornstarch 4 tablespoons flour ½ cup water 2 cups panko breadcrumbs (for coating the burgers) ¼ cup vegetable oil (for frying the burgers)

Additional ingredients

6 burger buns (I like brioche buns) 1 small white onion (sliced thin) 2 firm tomatoes (sliced thin) 1 small cucumber (peeled and sliced into thin rounds) Lettuce (I like iceberg lettuce)

Sauce directions

Add all four ingredients (Vegenaise through vinegar) to a medium bowl and stir to combine. Cover and set aside.

Add the cornstarch, flour, and water to a small mixing bowl and whisk until you get a smooth paste. Pour the paste into a shallow bowl. Pour the panko breadcrumbs into a second shallow bowl.

Heat the vegetable oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, dip one of the burgers into the batter (both sides) and then dredge both sides in the plate of panko crumbs. Do the same for other burgers. Use a spatula to transfer the burger from the batter to the panko crumbs and then again from the crumbs to the hot oil.

Lay the bottoms of the buns out on a flat surface. Peel off six leaves of lettuce and place one leaf on each bun bottom (by placing them on the bottom bun, the lettuce keeps the bottoms from getting soggy). Add plenty of sauce on top of the lettuce. Place burger patties on top of the lettuce. Top with tomato, onion and cucumber. Add additional sauce on top of that and finish with bun tops.

Conceptions of time – “episodic” or “time-ismoney” – create ways of being.

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH The new Surfer’s Journal arrived recently and more than ever, in this era of digitized peering into palm-sized devices, its glossy pages resonate with glimpses of the surfing life from across the world and over the decades. Authentic and tangible, the Journal always surprises. One essay in particular, titled “Melt That Clock,”

by Norris Eppes from Florida, posits that surfing realigns our conception of time.

Acting on the movements of tide, wind and swell, surfers utilize time in a way that is more similar to pre-industrial cultures than the one that the majority of us currently participate in: namely, the culture that structures time into immovable blocks of “productivity,” giving rise to the insipid (if all too true) phrase, “Time is money…”

“Episodic time” versus “time-ismoney” are the terms Eppes borrows from the economists, anthropologists and historians he quotes. The notion of surfers using time differently than the rest of mainstream America has been celebrated by the likes of Timothy Leary, the proponent of psychedelics as path-to-enlightenment in the 1960s, as well as Steve Pezman, founder of The Surfer’s Journal.

I celebrate it too, I think, when I write about attempting to experience nature and travel as my Irish and Danish ancestors might have, when I sailed my boat down the coast of Baja in “Voyage of the Cormorant.”

Being able to arrange one’s life on “episodic time” instead of “time-is-money time” is of course the very definition of privilege, yet some people – many surfers among them – make real sacrifices to achieve an open calendar, or to do away with calendars entirely. Covid-19 restrictions paradoxically freed-up whole sectors of workers to surf-then-work, which has been great for those of us making surfboards for a living and less-great for those who had already figured-out how to live outside time-punch employment to surf as conditions dictate.

My favorite line from Eppes’ essay is: “Surfing rewires your mind to conceptualize time close to how your ancestors thought about their days.” Yes, indeed!

But even with a “regular job,” (of which I’ve had many) there are still opportu-

nities to live “episodically,” particularly through surfing. Whether it’s crackof-dawn missions to snag a few waves before the shift starts, or paddling out in terrible conditions because it’s the only free time available, some manner of ocean magic is almost always available.

More and more, as I gather in these decades of living, I’m coming to believe that time is elastic: that it’s sometimes squeezed down tight and everything is urgent and stressful, and in other periods it opens up and meanders. But it does seem to go quickly, and I have to remind myself to slow down and savor these years with our little ones at home (especially since at nine and six respectively – they’re not so little anymore).

Ancient sailing technologies and techniques allow me to experience time outside of the technological maw, to glimpse what “whale time” might be like. But I’ve learned that a man alone in an open boat needs community and some level of infrastructure to survive.

Wilderness travel is one thing, but a life among loved ones and friends is what sustains me. Still, I remain wary of the toll that “time-is-money time” demands from us to live in a beautiful spot on the coast of California in the 21st-century.

Yearning for a vanished world, a world of small harbors and warm hearths, leaves me homesick for places I’ve never really known (even if I have traveled a bit surfing in misty old Ireland and down in Aotearoa/New Zealand where my people migrated). And I think about how the old ways of being in time seem to have been obliterated by Amazon trucks and the iPhone, and before them by IBM and McDonald’s, and before them by slavery, colonization and industrialization.

This post-post-modern moment, however, is remarkable for the ready communication that the internet provides. It’s a baby-with-the-bathwater thing when it comes to the perils of technology in the present day, since I can read what @saf_te_pia, a man of Maori descent, posts on Instagram about the legacies of colonialization even as my attempts at the impossible task of knowing the world as it was before have only left me with questions.

How might great-great grandfather John Beamish and uncle Allyen and all the others like them have gone down to the other side of the world and adapted into the existing society, perhaps making a new people, mixed of Polynesian and European skills and knowledges?

These “new people” do exist of course, mixed through and through. Combat has defined human existence, but if we care at all about subjugation of people, of the natural world, of the “old ways,” then we are obliged to understand the past and do something to make it right again. Nature regenerates given half a chance. And I think that cultures can regenerate too. It’s all the same stuff: plants, people, animals,

soil, river, sea and sky. Conceptions of time – “episodic” or “time-is-money” – create ways of being. From here on out we’ll do well to utilize aspects from both ways of thinking, ancient and modern.

Warriors baseball has big week with two wins in postseason play

Carpinteria started its postseason with two consecutive victories in the CIF tournament, starting with a 1-0 pitching duel Wednesday at home against Crossroads.

The Warriors were able to secure a spot in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 Wildcard game against the Roadrunners, pitting the Gold Coast League against the Citrus Coast league. John Calderwood Field was buzzing with playoff atmosphere for a game that ended up lasting just over 75 minutes, with the Warriors lone first-inning run being the difference in the match between Carpinteria ace Miles Souza and Crossroads starter Leo Rochman.

Carpinteria’s Luke Lounsbury was batted in by a long fly ball from Hunter Garcia to start off the game, then both teams tightened up on defense, with the Warriors protecting their narrow lead down to the wire.

Souza entered the game with eight wins as a starter in his senior season,

and he was locked in – retiring the first three batters in order and needing only 78 pitches to snag the shutout win and send the Warriors to the first-round road game against Beverly Hills.

Carpinteria’s defense backed Souza and the team escaped some sticky situations, including a diving second-inning catch by Nico Hernandez, and a deep catch near the fence by Erich Goebel in the third.

The win against a highly rated Crossroads team Division 1 caliber talent was great for the Warrior ’s morale, who were able to step up against a bigger opponent.

“It’s a good thing that these games are not played on paper,” said coach Pat Cooney.

“The beauty of baseball is that the little guys can win if they play well,” he said. “The team played their best game.

They earned the chance to play on.”

heavy traffic and hit the road to Beverly Hills, escaping La Cienega Park with a narrow 3-2 playoff win.

Senior right-hander Issac Castillo picked up his fifth victory on the season, pitching a complete game that vaulted his team to the second round of the CIF Division 4 tournament.

Lounsbury came up big again for Carpinteria, opening the third inning with a double to right-center that led to two runs scoring off another Garcia RBI. The Warriors added to their lead in the fifth, with Souza crossing the plate off a sacrifice fly from Castillo, bringing the score to 3-0.

Beverly Hills fought back in the bottom half of the inning, notching two runs of their own and flipping the momentum and building suspense for the fans at their home field.

The excitement built into a game-

deciding climax, with bases loaded for the last out in the bottom of the seventh.

Castillo had allowed five baserunners in the inning, and the Beverly Hills crowd hoped for a walk-off playoff win.

With a 3-1 count, Castillo threw the last pitch of the game, which ended with a ground ball – sending the ecstatic Warrior team to the next round of the tournament.

“We can’t credit the team effort enough,” Cooney said. “Not only was Beverly Hills good, the foreign and very hostile environment was a huge factor to overcome.

With this second postseason win, the Warriors earned the chance to bring the next round back home to John Calderwood Field for round two of the single elimination tournament on Tuesday at 4:15 p.m. against the Linfield Christian Lions.

Senior Sports Spotlight

As the year of sports comes to an end with Carpinteria High School’s graduation, CVN celebrates some of the star student athletes, highlighting their accomplishments in their sport and in the classroom. Here are a few of the Warriors’ outstanding seniors from the spring sports season who will be saying goodbye this summer.

Boys varsity volleyball made it to the CIF playoffs this year, and in their first round match, senior Arata Tomatsuri capped off his four-year career at CHS by surprising the opposing team Oakwood’s big front row by using his skills to hit around and through their blocks. Tomatsuri is described by coaches as an intense competitor who gives everything he has when he’s on the court. “Arata’s competitiveness is contagious, and he inspires the other players to play hard as well, ‘’ said coach Mickey Caughey.

Tomatsuri’s high-jumping, stuff-blocking style caught teams off-guard, and on more than one occasion he proved teams wrong when they thought they could hit over him. Playing in the back row, he ran down errant passes and kept off-court digs in play, keeping the Warriors in the position to score.

Cervantes has become an embodiment of consistency and resilience over her career as a Warrior. “She has been our best high jumper since her sophomore year,” Latham said.

In her sophomore and senior year, Cervantes was Citrus Coast League Champion in the event. She was only held from being a three-year consecutive run because there were no league championships held during her junior year. Her personal record of five feet puts her at number eight on the school’s all-time list. She has also proved to be a versatile athlete, running hurdles and relay races for the Warriors.

Off the track, Cervantes has also been involved with student leadership at CHS and will be attending California Lutheran University in the fall.

Jose “Swat” Suarez and Jasmine Gilbert

Carpinteria boys basketball’s lone senior, Jose “Swat” Suarez, proved to be a leader during his final season as a Warrior. He led the team in scoring and rebounding and was the go-to player down the stretch.

Suarez was the team’s captain with coach Scott Sorich looking to him all season to keep the Warrior’s offense strong.

Senior Jasmine Gilbert was one of the girls basketball team captains, playing multiple positions and leading the team in both scoring and assists.

As the team’s starting point guard, Gilbert earned a position as a second team allleague player for the Citrus Coast League. In the classroom, Gilbert is a straight-A student with a GPA above a 4.0. She will attend Santa Barbara City College in the fall and continue her basketball career for the Lady Vaqueros.

“Jasmine was a joy to coach,” said coach Henry Gonzales. “She was like having an assistant coach playing on the floor.”

Seniors Esai Vega and Fatima Cervantes served as team captains for this year’s Warrior boys and girls track and field teams; and in the Citrus Coast League Championships, they both pulled excellent performances that helped their respective teams come up big and bring home an undefeated league championship season.

Vega’s growth in the discus over his four years at Carpinteria shows his dedication to improvement, and his understanding and evolution of his throwing technique.

“He and the discus were not the best of friends his freshman year,” said coach Van Latham. “He preserved and improved with every season.”

As a senior, Vega earned both a Russell Cup and a Santa Barbara County championship in the discus. He continued his stellar run in the event, becoming the second-place qualifier for the CIF Division 4 Championships. His personal record of 148’ cements

Miles Souza

Miles Souza has proved himself to be a star on the diamond for the Warriors, becoming a three-year varsity starter, entering his senior season in 2021. Souza is an ace on the mound, but his versatility has allowed coach Pat Cooney to use him all over the infield.

The right-handed senior has shown bat speed and strength all year, and he proved to be a go-to batter when the Warriors needed a boost on offense.

On the mound, Souza is a force for CHS, leading them to nine victories on the season, including big wins going into the CIF Division 4 tournament.

A two-sport athlete who was also a starter on Carpinteria’s varsity boys basketball team, Souza has is a model of a successful student-athlete. He has maintained a 4.5 GPA and maintains a ranking at the top of his graduating class. His intelligence carries onto the field and his play has earned him a full scholarship to Beloit College in Wisconsin. Souza will lead the Warriors into their next playoff game against Linfield Christian on June 8.

Carpinteria hosts CIF track and field prelims, five athletes advance to finals

Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium was the center of attention for CIF Southern Section track and field, as Carpinteria hosted the prelims on June 5.

The Warriors, whose boys and girls teams both won the Citrus Coast League championships with undefeated league seasons, continued to build on an impressive season with five athletes advancing to the Division 4 Finals on June 12. The finals will also be held at Carpinteria’s home track, two days after the class of 2021 walks across the stage for graduation.

Vincent Rinaldi led the way, lowering his own school records in both the 100 and 200 meters. In the 200, he was first place in the meet with a time of 21.57, and he placed second in the 100 meters with a 10.72.

Sophomore Ainslee Alexander continued to impress, qualifying in two events. She set a new personal record of 8’ 6” in the pole vault, securing a fifth-place qualifying position, while placing eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 33’ 2.25”. Irving Garcia was able to match the performance in the boys event with his own eighthplace qualifying triple jump of 39’ 0.25”.

Senior Esai Vega, who has been improving since his freshman year in the discus, took the second qualifying spot in the event with a toss of 137’ 4”, and Mateo Handall was third fastest qualifier in the 400 meters with a time of 52.22. Alexandra Zapata was Carpinteria’s final qualifier, setting a personal record of 49.91 and placing eighth.

Way of the Warrior’s youngest wrestler makes it to the podium

Martial arts school Way of the Warrior sent its youngest wrestler to a regional tournament in Bakersfield this past weekend. Cody Carrasco, 7, placed third in his first-ever wrestling tournament.

Carrasco trains with Way of the Warrior coach Jesse Ruiz, who said Carrrasco impressed him with a double-leg takedown in his first competition in Kern County.

“Cody is a hard-working wrestler who pays attention in class and is a warrior on the mat,” Ruiz said.

Cody Carrasco placed third, with two wins and two losses at the Summer Kick-Off hosted by Kern County Wrestling Association.

CARPINTERIA HIGH SCHOOL GERARDO CORNEJO, PRINCIPAL To the Warriors Class of 2021, Congratulations! Soon you will walk across the stage and graduate from Carpinteria High School, during the past four years you have experienced many challenges, triumphs and created memories that have only made you stronger as you begin your post-secondary journey.

Little did you know that when you arrived at 4810 Foothill Road in the fall of 2017 your high school experience would include many outside events that would prevent you from having a full high school experience. Out of the four high school years, you have had your educational experience interrupted for almost two full school years. During that time, you evacuated your home due to the Thomas Fire and for the first time in CHS history, we did not have semester finals.

Some few weeks after the Thomas Fires erupted in 2017, you experienced another challenge after the Jan. 9, 2018 Montecito mudslides; and in early 2020, we began to hear in the news of a new virus that was making its way around the globe. On March 13, 2020 we all went into isolation due to Covid-19. It would not be until March 29, 2021 that you would return to campus and finish your high school experience. All those events brought with them anxieties, human tragedies, doubts and an array of emotions, but also acts of heroism, community building and many instances of neighbors helping neighbors.

Since mid-March 2020, you have experienced face masks, hand sanitizer, a lack of daily necessities, Google Classroom, Zoom, Group A, B, C, social distancing and mandatory Covid-19 testing for certain CIF sports. You learned to go to school in a new way, one where all your teachers and classmates were in small squares on your computer screen.

You have overcome many more challenges during your four years at CHS, but you have never given up on your goals. You have learned to value your family, friends and every moment of your time. All of CHS is impressed with the skills you learned over the years and we know that the tenacity you have demonstrated will take you far.

When you go out into the world, take the best of Carpinteria and sprinkle it wherever you go. Focus on the positive – there are plenty of people that go through life focusing on faults or negative things and they forget to enjoy the great things that surround them every day. Always remember your friends, your family, your community; we will always be supporting you, cheering you on as you accomplish each milestone in your life.

We are proud of the Class of 2021. You are more than prepared to face whatever life brings. Make the best of it and learn from your mistakes. Everyone experiences falls and bruises, but we also experience happiness and joy. Go out and conquer the world and leave it better than how you found it. As you travel in life… always remember, you are a Carpinteria High School Warrior and Warrior Spirit Never Dies!
