The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department has confirmed the first case of measles in the county since 2016. The person identified is a resident of Santa Barbara in his 20s. The man was considered infectious from May 25 to June 2, and was isolated as of May 29.

Alcazar to hold volunteer appreciation night

The Alcazar Theatre will hold a volunteer appreciation open house on Sunday, June 30. Doors open at 5 p.m. with food and refreshments and a screening of the movie “American Graffiti.” Organizers hope the event serves as a “thank you” to those who have volunteered in the past. Construction has begun at the new residential community Seahouse located on a 3.87-acre parcel at 1300 Cravens Lane (previously known as Green Heron Springs).

Warmington Residential, property owners, expect to complete construction this fall.

At approximately 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, a Volkswagon van caught fire on Highway 101 northbound, just south of La Conchita on the right shoulder. Ventura Fire Department was called to the scene and Carpinteria-Summerland Fire District also sent an engine to support. The fire was extinguished within 30 minutes and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Lifelong Carpinterian Louise Sanchez turns 100

Louise Lopez Sanchez was born on June 6, 1919, in Carpinteria. This year, as she celebrates her 100th birthday, Sanchez said she’s “thinking back on what she’s accomplished.”

Sanchez went to school in Carpinteria and attended church in a little house on Ash Street. She received first communion at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Santa Barbara from the Carpinteria parish. After graduating high school, she met Dan Sanchez, and the two were married in their church, St. Joseph Chapel, on 7th Street on June 18, 1939.

They loved to travel and visited Europe and most of the United States. When asked for a favorite memory from life in Carpinteria as a young woman, she recalled walking to the theater at night.

Religion has played a very big part in Sanchez’ life, and many Carpinterians will know her best as “Weesie,” a lifelong volunteer and parishioner at St. Joseph Church. She and her husband helped build the St. Joseph Catholic Church on Linden in the 1960s. The couple hosted the church’s first annual festival in the driveway of their beach property in 1955. For years, Sanchez made food for the festival, along with other ladies from the parish.

For Sanchez, her greatest achievement was starting St. Joseph’s Resale Shop, she said, which began as a rummage sale on 7th Street where Chapel Court is today.

Together with other women from church, Sanchez worked to grow the rummage sale, later moving it into the expanded

space in the church parking lot on El Carro Street. This go-to source for needed household items and gently used clothes, games and beyond continues to serve the community and raise funds for the parish.

St. Joseph Fr. Dick Martini affectionately called the Resale Shop, the “Macys of Carpinteria.”

Sanchez is part of a large and extended family of six generations of Carpinterians.

While she never had children, she was a sister, aunt, great-aunt, cousin and friend to many. Her goddaughter Mary DeAlba Cota remembers fondly how “she treated us like her children… she was always at every event supporting me and my brothers and sisters.” Cota said Sanchez was a good person her whole life and continues to be smart and gracious. She reads her Coastal View News every week and asks Cota for any new gossip in town.

Longtime family friend Susana Green noted Sanchez’ old-fashioned kindness, “always offering you something to eat when you visit her house; she is very giving.” Green recalled that when she was growing up, her sister had special needs, and while many adults and children would ignore her, Sanchez always talked to her and included her in activities, often asking her to help her with projects. “She was always very kind to my sister,” said Green.

Sanchez said she believes she owes her longevity to “living a clean life” and, of course, to her faith.

Friends and family will gather with Sanchez to celebrate her birthday at Villa Alamar Memory Care in Santa Barbara, where she currently resides.

Stop gun violence

We parents prefer not to think about it. It’s unthinkable but entirely within the realm of possibility. Innocent children are shot all the time in the United States.

Innocent adults are too. Every year in the United States, 40,000 people die of gunshot wounds.

Mass shootings at schools and bars and churches and concerts are routine enough that they have lost their impact on our collective psyche. We can put them out of mind in a matter of days. That’s unhealthy.

Contrast that with the March mosque shootings in New Zealand. Rather than put the shocking and horrific act of violence out of mind, public officials there reacted by organizing a country-wide gun buyback. It will cost about $200 million, but in New Zealand it’s understood that horrific violence by firearms demands immediate action.

Friday, June 7, is National Gun Violence Awareness Day and it kicks off Wear Orange Weekend. Following the 2013 death of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton in Chicago, where she was gathered in a park with friends and fell victim to a misplaced bullet, her loved ones organized Wear Orange Weekend. People across the country wear orange, the color worn by hunters to protect themselves, to raise awareness about gun violence, a perfectly preventable pandemic.

Santa Barbara has a gun buyback program organized by the Coalition Against Gun Violence. This annual event will be held from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturday, June 15, at Earl Warren Showgrounds.

Over the past five years, the event has removed 1,200 guns from our communities.

Anonymous people voluntarily turn over functional firearms for gift cards, and the event has been highly successful. If you have a firearm sitting around your home, bring it in. Who needs a gun?

Paradise lost!

Our valley has been contaminated with nauseous, noxious air. We have a processing facility being programmed for the business park across from the Bluffs.

You have investors coming in to town and placing their mark on our city…and the county continues to let it happen. What happened to our beach community? I still find it extremely hard to comprehend how the Carpinteria Unified School Board is justifying their students being exposed to the stench from the cannabis being grown right next to the school grounds.

There is no evidence showing that this contamination is not going to jeopardize these children in the long run.

And we certainly continue to make the news, and not in a positive manner.

Starting with California being the state with the most pot farms, followed by Santa Barbara County having the most pot farms in the state, and the really big one, CarPOTeria has the most pot farms!

I did not see the word “beach” in there anywhere, did you? Unfortunately, the county can’t seem to get its act together and see that permits are in order and that

the air contamination is resolved—as promised by the pot farmers. Shame on you for ignoring the rest of the agricultural industry in this valley as well as its residents.

My name is Diana Thorn, and I have lived in the Carpinteria area for over 26 years. I am saddened and outraged over what is happening in the Carpinteria area. The cannabis industry is spreading like wild flowers. I am upset about the nauseating skunk like smell, increased crime and the devastating consequences it is having on our crop growers, especially the avocado farmers. Avocado growers cannot get their crops sprayed because cannabis growers fear contamination. Isn’t our food supply more important than a drug? Will our farmers be driven out of the area?

As a longtime resident of the Carpinteria area, I am worried about the reputation of Carpinteria. Greed and money have been put ahead of the health, safety, food supply and economic security (value of homes) of Carpinterians. It is time to reevaluate. It is time to stop issuing cannabis permits and deal with the problems caused by this industry.

Board takes no action on budget, retiring teachers honored

In the final board meeting of the academic year, trustees of the Carpinteria Unified School District heard a report from Superintendent Diana Rigby outlining academic year 2019-20 revenues, spending and possible cuts. The board also approved a draft of Measure U spending items, celebrated the work of retiring teachers and welcomed a datadriven report from Canalino and Carpinteria Family School principal Jamie Persoon.

Rigby’s report for the Budget Study Session, the board’s seventh this year, presented an array of spending cuts aimed at maintaining a healthy fiscal reserve next academic year. With district revenues staying flat at some $21 million, steep mandated increases in special education spending, as well as health insurance and pension costs present a recurring problem. Rigby reminded the board that the roughly $800,000 in proposed discretionary cuts—concentrated largely on instructional aides, the attrition of a Social Studies position, and custodial and library staff—are necessary for a “sustainable budget.” The 50 percent reduction in Carpinteria High School library hours from eight to four, perhaps the most controversial of the proposed cuts, would save the district around $33,000. This budgetary forecast does not take into account possible increases in cost-of-living adjustments for district employees.

Board chairman Andy Sheaffer agreed with Rigby’s emphasis on economy, citing data from 2014-15 to highlight the impact of the 60 percent increase in mandated special education spending, from approximately $2.27 million to $3.83 million

in 2018-19. He outlined the sharp jump in obligatory spending, lamenting that “there is no mechanism to reimburse us for a lot of that.” The superintendent’s proposed budget sharply reduces the deficit from $503,000 in 2018-19 to just under $70,000 for 2019-20 and leaves the district with a fiscal reserve of 6.3 percent for the year. Final approval of the budget is scheduled for Jun 25, while the board’s next meeting on Jun 11 is the final opportunity for board trustees to suggest changes.

The board unanimously approved a sweeping set of Measure U spending items. Rigby reported that major construction at Aliso, Canalino and Carpinteria High schools will begin June 15, with modernization projects to be completed

by Aug. 19. The purchase of Gen7 modular classrooms for the three schools won unanimous approval from the board.

Trustee Rogelio Delgado dissented on two contracts up for vote, however, the first was a facilities project coordinator at $78.20 per hour and the second was a professional services inspector at $95 per hour, both figures characterized by district staff as at “the low range of rates currently charged by these professionals.” The two positions were nonetheless approved, 3-1, board member Michelle Robertson being absent.

Board members and Rigby honored several long-serving educators, celebrating their retirement and honoring their contributions to district students. Notably, CHS Principal Gerardo Cornejo strongly praised social studies teacher Casey Roberts for his 34-year-career and his moral dedication to the well-being of his students. Roberts, who himself taught now-principal Gerardo Cornejo, said “it is such a pleasure to tell people I work for my former student.” Board member Sally Green recalled the joy of seeing a group of students “totally in rapture” at the reading of long-time Canalino Library Tech Bunni Lesh, while Alice Bingham was celebrated by a former student for her mantra to “be an upstander, not a bystander.”

Canalino and Family School principal Jamie Persoon delivered a detailed report on academic progress at her schools, especially in writing competencies, and praised the schools’ new math curriculum for generating a spike in test scores. Ninety-two percent of fourth and

Authorities release information on drug, child-endangerment and weapons case CVN report On April 18, an arrest in Ventura led Camarillo detectives to an apartment in the 4800 block of Sandyland Road, where they located two runaway juveniles, one of whom had a seven-monthold infant. Detectives also found drug paraphernalia used to ingest controlled substances, a white powdery substance believed to be cocaine, ammunition, three unsecured and fully loaded handguns and one partially built semiautomatic handgun in areas accessible to the juveniles.

In Ventura, Camarillo police had arrested Elizabeth Figueroa, 36, of Carpinteria, on a felony warrant for being under the influence of a controlled substance with a firearm after they concluded an investigation of a runaway juvenile incident. Evidence at the Sandyland Road apartment suggested that Christopher Welch, 44, of Ojai, was living there as well, and he was subsequently arrested in Ventura on numerous charges, including felony child endangerment and possession of illegal assault rifles. Following the apartment search in Carpinteria, Ventura County Child Protective Services took custody of the runaway juveniles and the infant, and transported them back to Ventura County.

Welch was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail, and he soon posted bail and was released from custody.

The Camarillo Special Enforcement Detail and the Ojai Police Department then served a search warrant at Welch’s residence in the 1800 block of Country Place in Ojai. A search of the residence revealed 28 assorted rifles, shotguns and handguns, high-capacity magazines and several silencers. Detectives confirmed several of the AR-15 and

Christopher Welch, 44, of ojai was arrested for felony child endangerment and possession of illegal assault rifles.

AK-47 style rifles seized fit the criteria of being considered an “assault weapon” in violation of California Penal Code.

In addition, possession of a silencer is illegal in California.

The search of the residence also resulted in the seizure over 15,000 rounds of various types of ammunition. All the firearms and ammunition were seized as evidence, and on April 21, Welch was again arrested and booked into the Ventura County Pre-Trial Detention Facility.

Welch’s bail was set at $250,000 with a pending court date.

City releases comprehensive economic profile Report indicates uptick in jobs, high housing costs and low crime

By DeBra Herrick The city of Carpinteria has released the 2019 Carpinteria Valley Economic Profile.

The report, prepared by Mark Schniepp of the California Economic Forecast, sets out a broad-reaching overview of the status of the city when it comes to quality of life and economic health bench markers.

Jobs

Last year, over 300 jobs were created in Carpinteria Valley, two-thirds in the information sector. Leading the growth, Procore has gone from 161 employees in 2005 to 850 in 2019, making it the largest employer in the valley, followed by Agilent (400), Carpinteria Unified School District (365), LinkedIn (312), Nusil Technology (284) and Gigavac (232).

Expanded cannabis cultivation has driven growth in the agricultural sector outside the city limits. Thirty-seven companies in Carpinteria Valley hold temporary cannabis cultivation licenses, dedicating over 100 acres to cannabis crops, many repurposing greenhouses formerly used for flowers. Since 2017, the ag sector created 112 jobs. Other notable job boosts in 2018 include the hotel and restaurant industry (86), and the wholesale sector (53).

The retail sector, however, lost 32 jobs in 2018, and saw shrinking sales by 13 percent over the last five years, with some stores going out of business.

Tourism

In 2018, Carpinteria State Beach attracted an estimated 891,000 visitors who spent $30 million in Carpinteria.

The six local hotels with more than 600 total rooms had an average occupancy rate of 69.8 percent and garnered an all time high of $21 million. Additionally, 200 short-term rental properties recorded $3.5 million in revenue and $415,000 in transient occupancy taxes for the city.

Crime

Crime rates in Carpinteria have been very low since the late 1990s, according to the report, and are among the lowest in the county. As of 2017, a total of 232 crimes were reported for every 10,000 residents in Carpinteria compared to Santa Barbara at 305 and Lompoc at 277.

There have been no homicides or cases of willful manslaughter in Carpinteria for more than a decade, and the city has very low rates of rape, robbery and assault.

Residential real estate

Carpinteria continues to experience growth in its housing demand. Within city limits, the report estimates there are 2,136 apartment units with a vacancy rate in March 2019 of 0.9 percent and an average monthly rent at $1,825. Home prices rose 11.7 percent in 2018 with a median selling value of $1.16 million.

New housing

The report confirmed that the construction of new housing has been virtually non-existent in recent years, noting, “The relative lack of new housing units has helped to ensure that the region remains small, though traffic congestion is intensified by limited worker housing.

Furthermore, retail stores and services must rely more on visitor spending than resident spending.” Currently, there are 54 residential units approved in Carpinteria and 66 additional proposed units.

The 31-unit Seahouse residential project broke ground in April 2019.

Traffic

According to the report, traffic volumes are rising in Carpinteria, approaching the highest levels in a decade. In 2017, an average of 72,500 vehicles traversed the intersection of Linden Avenue and Highway 101 each day. Exacerbated by the Highway 101 construction project, commute times are increasing. In 2018, workers who lived in the city of Carpinteria had an average commute time of 25 minutes.

Population growth

Carpinteria’s population exhibits steady growth, having gained more than 75 new residents in 2018 and rounding out a total city population of 13,704 and a

total Carpinteria Valley (zip codes 93013 and 93067) population of 20,618.

Housing affordability

Not surprisingly the report noted the high cost of homes in Carpinteria which have reached the heights of home prices at the top of the 2006 “bubble.” A typical mortgage payment for a median-priced single-family home is now above $5,700 while the median household income is $6,900 per month, “meaning that the mortgage payment on a typical home would exceed 80 percent of median income.”

Carpinteria offers a large share of mobile homes though—”no other jurisdiction in California (aside from rural zones)

has a higher share of mobile homes than the city of Carpinteria,” the report stated.

At close to 74 percent lower than the cost of a single-family home, the median price for mobile homes was $298,250 in 2018.

Household income

In 2018, the median household income in the city of Carpinteria was $76,651.

However, the report noted that almost 30 percent of households earned $125,000 or more and only 21 percent earned less than $35,000; stating, moreover, that “across Santa Barbara County and the broader state, household incomes are lower, indicating that Carpinteria is a relatively affluent region of California.”

Last chance to weigh in: Public input period closes June 10 on Central Coast drilling/fracking CVN RepoRt

Tens of thousands of public comments have already been submitted in response to the Trump Administration’s courtordered study on the impacts of fossil fuel drilling and fracking across more than one million acres of federal land and mineral estate. The study covers nine central California counties, from Monterey County in the north to Santa Barbara and Ventura counties in the south, and from the coast inland to the southern Sierra Nevada mountain range.

The 45-day public comment period ends on June 10. In its draft study of the environmental impacts of hydrologic fracturing, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) proposed no changes to its 2015 plan to allow new oil drilling and fracking in and adjacent to national forests, parks and monuments, state, county and city parks, beaches, wildlife refuges, rivers, reservoirs, schools and other areas especially sensitive to environmental and health impacts. Even parcels along the Pacific Crest Trail remain in the plan.

Over 150 people attended each of the three meetings last month, in Bakersfield, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara, hosted by the BLM as part of the public comment period associated with the release of the draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS). Amid expressed concerns about water, schools and health impacts like asthma, residents speaking at the meetings expressed outrage at the Bureau of Land Management’s refusal to record their comments and to add them to the project record, according to a release by Los Padres Forest Watch. Moreover, the release noted that the BLM has refused to respond to a unanimous request by the Ventura County Board of Supervisors to hold a public hearing in Ventura County.

A similar request by Congresswoman Julia Brownley was ignored.

“The BLM is fast-tracking this process at the expense of public participation,” said Rebecca August of Los Padres ForestWatch, “and is refusing to make any changes to its plan to address the known environmental and public health impacts of fossil fuel drilling and fracking on public lands.”

According to LPFW, the BLM considered just 211 of over 8,400 letters submitted during last year’s scoping period, claiming that 97.5 percent of public comment, which was overwhelmingly opposed to the proposal, was not what it deemed substantive and original.

The DEIS is subject to new guidelines, imposed by the Trump administration, which restrict the length of the study to no more than one year and 150 pages, regardless of the project’s scope and complexity. Environmental impact studies are critical to understanding how a project might impact water, air, soils, wildlife, archeological resources, other land uses and public health. They also are meant to identify and explore project alternatives that may be more suitable to a particular site, and often take years to develop.

“This is the public’s last chance to weigh in on this misguided proposal that threatens our region’s air, water, wildlife and favorite outdoor recreation destinations,” said Jeff Kuyper, executive director of Los Padres ForestWatch. “The fate of our region’s iconic landscapes is at stake, and we need residents throughout the region to send a message loud and clear that our public lands belong to the people, not the oil industry.”

The BLM is accepting comments on its study of drilling and fracking until June 10. This is the only comment period on the agency’s study until a decision is issued, which is expected in September.

What’s new at the harbor seal rookery?

Sealwatch volunteers end their service each year on June 1; this report covers May 20 through May 31.

Carpinteria harbor seals do not migrate. Harbor seals are here year-round and are protected year-round. Although the full beach closure that begins on Dec. 1 only runs until June 1, the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act provides heavy penalties for disturbing marine mammals at any time. Harbor seals rest on land about 50 percent of the time—they need safe rest areas (called haul outs) to survive. Please consider walking along the bluff top trail rather than the beach near the pier all year. The primary reason you may not see seals during the summer is people walking on the beach at the pier haul out.

Harbor seals molt in summer/ fall and some of the highest counts in Carpinteria have been during the summer/fall as they shed fur.

Disturbances

On June 1, a man insisted on his “right” to walk on the beach and scared over 100 seals into the water. When informed as he came up to the blufftop that he should not disturb the seals, he claimed he enjoyed scaring them and denied the federal law applied. Because of his attitude and apparent repeat conduct, his photo and license number were provided to local federal officers. Over 12 days there were two disturbances by beachwalkers, two by loud blufftop viewers, one by a helicopter and one by trespassing people at the pier (not oil industry).

It flew by with the speed of a peregrine falcon, the fastest of all birds, only lingering long enough to douse us with some surprise showers. Summerland’s a lush garden, green still lingering on the hillsides, nasturtiums running riot. Wildflowers are still blooming all the way up to Lake Cachuma, which is one big smiling bowl of water.

Bees are busy slurping nectar from flowers everywhere. You’d never know they’re in danger, but they are, mostly due to the mysterious Colony Collapse Disorder. Theories abound on what’s killing off millions of bee colonies, with most scientific fingers pointing to pesticides, namely the widely used neonics (nicontinoids).

The Community Pool goes Hawaiian Photos by Joshua Curry The Carpinteria Community Pool celebrated 30 years of operation on Saturday, June 1, with a Hawaiianthemed party throughout the day and into the late evening hours—the afternoon was given over to family fun and swimming, then became a 21-and-over celebration from 4 to 9 p.m. Gray skies didn’t contribute to the tropical feel, but party goers’ aloha shirts and flower leis went a long way to brightening the mood.

Toby Spach shows pro-potential as SBCC pitcher

After strapping on the gear at the catcher’s position for four years of varsity baseball at Carpinteria High School, Toby Spach recently began a new role at the next level. With the first year of baseball at Santa Barbara City College now under his belt, the former Warrior has since discovered a new talent, 60 feet and six inches away, on the pitcher’s mound.

Spach had never given much thought about becoming a pitcher. “It really just didn’t come up after my freshman year (at Carpinteria High School), it was kind of like solidified that I was going to be the guy behind the plate to work with guys on the mound,” he explained. In fact, Spach wasn’t really sold on the idea of catching at first. “I didn’t start catching until I was like 12, I used to actually be afraid of catching when I was younger,” he said. Spach started high school around five-feet-tall and literally grew into the position, reaching over six-feet-tall by the end of his senior year. During his junior season at CHS, he batted .391 and in his senior year, he made first team All Tri-Valley League. After graduating, Spach played a bit for the seven-time National Baseball Congress World Series (NBC) champion Santa Barbara Foresters.

One thing Spach knew for sure was that he wanted to play baseball at SBCC. “It’s an unreal program. It gets guys to the next (four-year college) level, the coaching staff is second to none,” he explained of playing for the Vaqueros. Spach recalled that he first met SBCC Baseball Head Coach Jeff Walker after his junior year as a Warrior, he contacted him again during his senior year, and as a result, Spach found his way to a diamond where he could play ball and get a two-year degree.

SBCC has enjoyed its share of success, winning five of the last nine Western State Conference (WSC) titles and competing in the Southern Cal Regional all nine of those years consecutively. This year was no different. The Vaqueros placed 11 players on the All-WSC squad, and Walker was named 2019 Co-Coach of the Year. It was the fourth time in eight years that Walker has either won or shared the award.

But it took the coaching staff a little time to realize the special talent they had in Spach. “I went through the entire Fall catching. At the end of the year, (the coaches) said you have a really strong arm, can you throw for us in the bullpen?” said Spach. “We kind of put him on the mound out of necessity, we were kind of thin as far as depth on the mound this year,” said Walker. The tryout went well, with the young catcher’s pitches clocking between 91 and 93 mph. One pitch reached the 95 mark.

“As far as our roster coming back next year, all those guys have the ability to play in college, certainly with Toby being a pro prospect,” explained Walker of

To make his upside even stronger, Spach has grown a bit since high school, now standing at six-foot, two inches and having bulked up to 185 lbs. Walker likens him to another Vaquero he coached in 2014, Santa Barbara High School’s Lucas Benenati who played shortstop and third base. “We put him (Benenati) on the mound, and it was way different than his ability to play shortstop, he ended playing some pro ball, too,” said Walker. As far as Carpinteria alum Toby Spach’s future is concerned, it appears the sky’s the limit.

Way of the Orient wrestlers bring home medals

Way of the Orient martial arts school competed in two May USA Wrestling tournaments. At the first meet, held at Buena High School on May 4, six wrestlers competed, and five wrestlers took home medals. On May 25, wrestlers competed at Camarillo High School in freestyle. This season, Way of the Orient students have competed in five USA Wrestling tournaments, and “have shown an excellent performance against the competition,” said Jesse Ruiz, “Our school looks forward to helping those interested in wrestling and building champions along the way.”

Junior Warriors are off to a successful season

CVYAA Carpinteria Junior Warriors kicked off their 2019 season with a full day event hosting flag football and 7vs7 games on June 2, at Carpinteria High School fields. During the full day of athletics, Carpinteria kids faced off against league players from Oxnard, Santa Paula, Fillmore, Ventura, Grace Brethren and San Luis Obispo.

The Carpinteria United 10U girls’ all-star soccer team won its third tournament title of the season June 1-2 at the Santa Barbara Splash tournament. Over the weekend the team went 4-0, defeating teams from Camarillo, Santa Monica, Pacific Palisades and Santa Barbara. The United went 17-2 on the season and scored 80 goals while only giving up 17. Head coach Mike Miller said, “As coaches we preached the importance of defense all season and we worked on it in practice more than most teams and it showed in the end.” Miller also praised the passion of the 10U stars. “We had 11 girls on our team and they all showed great passion during the season. This weekend I was especially impressed

by Yoselyn Lara. Despite being our smallest player, she showed the heart of a lion and really set the tone for the rest of the team with her physical play. If these girls keep playing together, the future of soccer is very bright in Carpinteria,” he added.

Local designer curates Santa Barbara exhibit

Carpinterian Ana Stork is curating the exhibit “Water” at Studio D, SBCAST, 513 Garden St. in Santa Barbara, opening on Thursday, June 6, and running through June 9. Exploring interpretations of water through the creative process in mixedmedia, sculpture, video, photography, digital art and installation, “Water” will present works from American and international artists including Amabelle Aguiluz, Caryl St. Ama, Greta Boesel, Reenie Charrière, Antonia Dimitrova, Catharina Goldnau, Gregory Grano, Buena Johnson, Krista Machovina, Paméla Simard and Daggi Wallace. “As Bruce Lee said, ‘Be formless, shapeless… Be water, my friend,’” Stork noted. “Both art and water are vital for life,” she added, “and they share the ability to be many things and transcend a specific form.”

little flat for me. The characters could have been developed a bit more and I often wished I was reading Deidre’s coming-of-age story instead of Nima’s.

There are too many subplots and by the end of the book, not all of the storylines are resolved which makes me wish the author would have fine-tuned the plot and edited out some characters. That said, this is still a fun, light read (despite some homophobic characters) making a case for more depictions of drag-queen fairy godmothers.

“Kings, Queens, and In-Betweens”

Taken under Deidre’s wing, Nima discovers the wonderful world of drag in which she is able to shape and explore her queer identity.

poverty, homelessness and individuals’ responses to them.

Galetto lets the reader roam streets with him, meeting people who have come to poverty and to homelessness through different paths. As the reader’s guide, Galetto raises questions, reflecting on these paths with a compassionate and open mind.

Galetto’s photographs from his encounters are included as informative visuals. This book is not a downer and it doesn’t condemn any particular group.

Instead, as titled, the author observes and reports. The highly readable format demands the reader’s attention as each poem illuminates a different facet of the issue.

While the book made me sad, in many ways it ended up giving me hope. I look forward to reading more from Brian Galetto.

Cotillion comes to Canalino

California Gold Ballroom Dance Studio taught a Spring Cotillion Ballroom Dance program to three fifth grade classes at Canalino Elementary School two times a week for six weeks, culminating in a cotillion dance on May 31. With a focus on etiquette, self-esteem building and positive life lessons, California Gold instructors demonstrated dance techniques to the students, who proved to be quick studies: “The students are amazing, very fast learners, and enjoy dancing every minute they are in our class!” said Diane Meehan, owner of California Gold Ballroom Dance Studio.

Summerland students turn lemons into lessons

Summerland Elementary School kindergarten/first-graders have been working on a project-based learning assignment to raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, an organization for childhood cancer research. Teacher Danielle Eden’s students made flyers explaining the project, worked on math skills by counting dollars and cents, investigated the biology of lemon trees and the science of making lemonade and incorporated social studies as well by learning about community involvement and the benefit of volunteering for a cause. The Summerland Elementary students raised $127.60 with their lemonade stand, which will fund more than two hours of research for a cancer cure.

GATE students tackle the plastics problem

Teresa Koontz’s work as GATE (Gifted and Talented Education Program) Coordinator for the Carpinteria Unified School District involves teaching STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) lessons to elementary GATE students in grades three to five. She recently organized a project-based study targeting the upcoming Santa Barbara Plastic Straw Ban, asking students to analyze the pros and cons of the ban and reach their own conclusions. Koontz reported that “students were very interested in the topic since being from a beach community, they understand the impact that plastic waste has on our beaches and ocean life.” Following their research, each student created a slideshow and shared their presentations with classmates.

Additionally, students worked in teams to create persuasive posters to help explain the straw ban to their peers. Finally, realizing that the plastic problem was larger than just straws, the students designed and created a prototype for an ocean cleanup device. “It has been an exciting unit of study,” Koontz said, noting that World Oceans Day is June 8 and the plastic ban starts July 1 in Santa Barbara.

Setting up the exit

Jim Wilson began his talk to Morning Rotarians by saying, “No one wants to end a business they started, nurtured, made successful and enjoyed. But the facts are that all small businesses should have an ‘exit plan’ to maximize their investment.” Fifty percent of businesses have no plan to close or sell, Wilson added, and when an unexpected turn in personnel, health problems or other unanticipated tragedies occur, almost everything could be lost. In addition, selling a business has to be carefully managed. Wilson ended his talk by saying that in 2022 there will be a peak in people turning 65, and 10 years later there will be more sellers than buyers, which may affect the profitability of sales.

Izabella Lianna Macias

Matthew and Sara Macias welcomed their second child, sweet little baby girl Izabella Lianna Macias on May 9, 2019, at 8:41 a.m. at Capital Medical Center in Olympia, Washington. Izabella was quite punctual arriving on her due date, which is the case of less than 5 percent of pregnancies. She weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and measured 20 ½ inches in length.

Maternal grandparents are Robert and Iliana Schultz of Washington State. Paternal grandparents are Edward and Debbie Macias of Arizona. Great-grandparents include Shirley Savio who resides in Goleta and the late, longtime residents of Carpinteria, Edward and Sara Macias.

High altitude floating with CVN

Stephen and Lynda Joyce recently toured Peru visiting Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and Punta. They sampled local cuisines including alpaca and ceviche. On the floating islands of Urus in Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world (pictured), the Joyces learned how to weave reeds into a spongy, floating platform. The island they visited is shared by six families and has solar power, a soccer pitch and a volley ball court. No basketball, though—the straw of the island does not allow the ball to bounce.
