Mavericks bounce to the beach and back

Mavericks Athletics held its annual “Dribble Drive” fundraiser on Friday evening, May 18, with 40 players and coaches dribbling basketballs from Carpinteria High School down Linden Avenue to the beach and back, then shooting free throws for two hours. After 11 seasons in Carpinteria coaching youth travel basketball, as well as summer camps, the Mavericks program is going strong. “Our program purposefully runs at a deficit every year,” says Director Ryan Reed, “we just want to make this program available to every kid that wants to play. We coach basketball, but that’s just the conduit to teach character. Character is what we’re building in these kids, and it’s paying off.” Mavericks has players from all over Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Ojai, in grades three through high school. RYAN REED
