Zelda Prune of Angel’s Antiques on carpinteria Avenue participates in several swap meets and flea markets throughout the year, but the “big one,” she said, is the Antiques, Decorative Arts & Vintage Show and Sale to benefit the nonprofit, Child Abuse Listening Mediation (CALM), held on May 17, 18 and 19, at the Earl Warren Showgrounds in Santa Barbara. For Prune, outside of Angel’s, it represents her largest presence—this year she has four double booths in the heart of the show—and it’s also near to her heart. Prune is passionate about the in-clinic services, screenings and therapy that CALM provides to children as young as four-months-old who have experienced trauma.

“The CALM show is experiencing a major revival,” said Prune. Approximately 80 vendors are participating including Mark Woolman, a favorite dealer at The

“I’ve been tracking what’s trending,” Prune said. “I’m always tracking the design and décor trends, and things are definitely moving toward a more sophisticated aesthetic. My clients don’t change their décor just because something is popular. They already have most of the pieces they need and are willing to spend the money to acquire a unique ‘accent’ piece that really pops. They are much more into ‘curating’—purchasing pieces they want to add to their already eclectic collections—than buying stuff they see everywhere.”

Drought recovery in Carpinteria

General Manager, Carpinteria Valley Water District

Over the course of the six-year drought, we strategically managed our water supplies in order to adapt to unpredictable winters and limited surface water supplies.

When water levels in Lake Cachuma made a sharp decline, we relied heavily on the Carpinteria Groundwater Basin in order to meet local water demand. Carpinterians made lifestyle changes in order to save water in their everyday lives and helped us achieve our water-savings goals. Many district customers participated in our rebate programs to reduce their water footprint. During the drought, over 300 high-efficiency toilets and more than 50 high-efficiency washing machines were installed. In addition, more than two acres of lawn were removed and replaced with drought-tolerant landscapes across our service area. We want to thank you for your conservation efforts during this drought period and hope that you will continue to use water wisely moving forward.

After years of unreliable surface water supplies, we finally felt some relief last winter when the Santa Ynez River watershed received above average rainfall and the lake level began to rise significantly. Although Lake Cachuma is currently at 80 percent of capacity, it is important to recognize that precipitation is highly variable in our region. Santa Barbara County as a whole received slightly above average rainfall last winter, but in Carpinteria we received below average rainfall. We live in an arid region and it is impossible to anticipate future winters and how much water will be available. In fact, this wet year could be an anomaly in a longer dry cycle, so it is

important to make sure that we use what we have efficiently and make it last.

Consistent winter rains brought the lake from 36 percent capacity up to 80 percent, which made a remarkable visual difference.

Although this was certainly an impressive transformation, Carpinteria’s groundwater basin still needs time to recover after years of prolonged drought. We will need several consecutive wet winters to help recharge our aquifers before we start to see normal groundwater levels again.

Because of the wet weather this winter, the district is proposing to lower its Stage Two Drought Condition to a Stage One Drought Condition, which would lift many mandatory drought water-use restrictions.

These regulations were enforced with warnings and fines which discouraged water waste and excessive consumption.

Under the proposed Stage One Drought Condition, water-use restrictions will become voluntary practices and the conservation target will be reduced from 20 percent to 15 percent. It is still essential to avoid water waste and recognize that we need to make “conservation a California way of life,” which is also a goal of the state.

The district hopes that with continued efforts by the public, we can achieve a 15 percent water-use reduction from predrought district-wide water use. CarpConnect brings family advocate to lead free support groups

there searched the parks at night for my son. Yes, this too passed, and my son got the care that he needed. In working as a family advocate, I have been able to pay this kindness forward.

Individuals facing mental health issues can now find support groups in a free and local program through CarpConnect, located in the Veterans Memorial Building, 941 Walnut Ave. Ramona Winner, a family advocate for the nonprofit Mental Wellness Center, is leading support groups with family members, caregivers and individuals in Spanish and English.

Navigating the mental health care system can be daunting, especially for a family in crisis, and Winner tries to provide information and guidance that can help.

Winner was drawn into the mental health field after a personal experience advocating for her son, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was 18. In the more than 15 years since her son’s diagnosis, Winner has been trained and certified to teach the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) Family to Family Class and USA Youth Mental Health First Aid. Winner recently agreed to an interview to explain more about the programs she leads and the ways she helps others.

What kinds of problems do you see people dealing with? What are the most common?

For many of the people I see, mental health issues are new for their family. I see people who are trying to make sense of behavior that doesn’t make sense, and trying to figure out what are reasonable boundaries to set. Often people don’t know how to find a psychiatrist or therapist or where to get information. A lot of the time, family and caregivers feel isolated or have trouble sharing their story with others, or they feel a stigma or have been hurt by comments made by friends and family. Others don’t know what to expect if a loved-one is in jail, hospitalized or suicidal.

DEBRA HERRICK: Tell me about a meaningful experience you had with someone who was in despair who you were able to help heal. What was the process like for the person/family?

Ramona Winner is a family advocate facilitating free support groups at CarpConnect.

RAMONA WINNER: I have worked in the capacity of family advocate and volunteer for over eight years. In this time, I have helped thousands of individuals, family members and caregivers. Their

stories are varied—each with their own difficulties and pain. I can only speak to my own experience in working with a family advocate at the beginning of my own personal journey.

I came to learn of the Mental Wellness Center/NAMI through a referral from my primary care physician. He was the first person to notice that our son, then 18, was struggling with a severe mental illness.

We were absolutely floored. This news left me in a numb state where I was only capable of putting out fires. One of the first actions we took was attending a family support group. “Wow,” we thought, “We were no longer alone.” There were others who understood our experiences.

When our son’s condition worsened and he was in and out of hospitals and on and off the streets, our family was exhausted. Emotions of fear, anxiety and despair left us drained. The family advocate at that time was wonderful. She helped me formulate a plan to effectively advocate for my son’s care and also to practice self-care. I continued attending and getting support from the family support group. Many of the people I met

What would you want families to know that are going through a crisis right now?

That this too will pass. Meet the person who is struggling with mental health where they are at—this is the NAMI philosophy. If the mental illness is one that will be a part of your loved-one’s life, then learn to accept the ill person for who they are. Also, they are not unique in their difficulties. Others are going through similar crises and there are wonderful support groups where they can share without criticism. People do get better.

Is there anything else you would want to share with CVN readers?

Change is made through action. We have many opportunities to volunteer and give back or pay forward. The Mental Wellness Center and NAMI South Santa Barbara County are changing the way people view mental illness. Join us in our stigma-busting efforts!

Malaria, Zika, West Nile

Malaria, Zika, West Nile, Citrus greening and Pierce’s disease, these are all examples of insect borne diseases to people or plants whose insect hosts are in California. From the recent article, “The unintended consequences of cannabis” (CVN, Vol. 25, No. 33), it’s clear that the local pot cartel used their Mafialike power to scare away companies that have defended farmers from insect pests for decades. Many local farms have been farmed in harmony with the community by the same families for over 100 years.

When climate change brings even more pests and diseases, will the pot growers choose profits over protecting the public?

I fear that we can already smell their answer in the stench of greed that pervades so much of our community.

Useless restrictions need a fix

The recent issue of avocado pesticides and their potential contamination of marijuana greenhouses illustrates how the current filter requirements are useless, because clearly, they open up all the vents. Many municipalities are more restrictive by requiring that no untreated air leave the greenhouse. This would solve the stench problem and allow ag growers to treat their adjoining crops without fear of lawsuits. Unless this rule is enacted we will be forever smelling the stench of this crop that never should have been allowed in an urban environment in the first place.

Sensitive pot plants

If cannabis is as sensitive to contamination as recently indicated by the apparent incompatibility with avocado cultural practices, water may become an issue. It has been mentioned that the area around Carpinteria may start to utilize recycled water. The base material for recycled water is sewage—essentially whatever goes down the drain. Thus, many pharmaceuticals, personal care products, endocrine disrupters, flame retardants and other xenobiotics are found in this base water.

Depending on how that base water is processed, its cost will see varying levels of residual xenobiotics in the finished recycled water. Plants can bioaccumulate xenobiotics. Metabolism of foreign chemicals (xenobiotics) by plants generally proceeds in phases. These include transformation, conjugation and compartmentation. Compartmentalization into the bud would seem problematic.

The plants, to deal with xenobiotics, use enzymes having similarities to those of xenobiotic metabolism in the mammalian liver. To use this water may force cannabis production to either use extraprecautionary water processing or risk inadvertent contamination, which may

be confused for contamination stemming from adjacent non-cannabis crops.

Because crop incompatibilities are something that has long plagued agriculture, the situation should have been flagged. Unfortunately, it was not. This then allows for attorneys to begin plowing the now fertile legal fields of Carpinteria for its new crops—lawsuits.

A gem, Carpinteria High School

I’ve never written a letter to Coastal View News before, but a recent experience at Carpinteria High School impressed me so much that I was moved to share this experience with others. For the second year in a row, I interviewed CHS seniors who applied for Carpinteria Education Foundation college scholarships.

Again, this year, I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent interacting with each of these bright, articulate and highly qualified students. I found each of them to be extremely motivated and well-prepared for college, despite the fact that many of them have overcome significant challenges in their lives to achieve their academic success. These talented, passionate young men and women have worked incredibly hard to get where they are today, accepted into many of the most highly ranked colleges and universities in the country. I am particularly proud to know that they received their education at our local public high school.

I was also amazed at the significant role the CHS staff played in supporting these students throughout their four years of high school. Each student spoke with genuine gratitude and appreciation about the relationships they had developed with particular teachers and counselors. I heard multiple stories about how these staff members worked well beyond what would be expected to help students achieve their goals. I felt like I was hearing descriptions of teachers from a small private institution. But this gem is right here in Carpinteria.

Vote for the environment, reject fracking

The real problems caused by climate change include more destructive forest fires, mud slides and more frequent drought. Our government leaders will soon be casting crucial votes on whether to allow massive new oil drilling.

Tobacco companies knew for decades that their product sickens and kills. They covered up the facts, spent millions to confuse the issue, and lied until the truth became too obvious. Organic chemicals that share molecular characteristics with the poisonous and cancer-causing sub-

stances in cigarettes are also found in and around oil company operations. These companies want to expand drilling in the central coast. They too have attempted to hide the facts about the harm done by their operations. They too spend millions to muddy the public waters and to influence lawmakers. And they too will continue to do this until we say “No.” A report on ERG’s proposal for massive new drilling in Cat Canyon clearly states that it would add “250,000 metric tons of CO2 equivalent” to our atmosphere. Imagine an additional 550 million pounds of carbon dioxide. Consider the possible mitigation of this impact.

Would a plan to reduce by over 99 percent this green house gas dumping be truly verifiable and enforceable? Or is this a convenient tactic and contrivance, just as low-tar cigarettes were for tobacco companies? How could we be sure about any claimed mitigation and how could the oil companies be held appropriately accountable if they failed to fully deliver over the 40 years of the project?

Our local governments need to continue to move forward in smart, healthful and sustainable directions, in ways that really bring jobs and that benefit our economy. They need to reject hydraulic fracking projects including Cat Canyon.

After all, while they don’t bring in much new employment or tax revenue, they do cause significant problems and present thoroughly unacceptable risks.

Carpinteria to host Common Table event CVN REPoRt

The familiar sight and sound of afternoon vehicular traffic on the 800 block of Linden Avenue will be replaced for a few hours on May 23 by the sight of a long table and chairs running down the middle of the street, and the sound of area neighbors from across the Carpinteria community eating and chatting together, accompanied by live music.

Common Table is a series of events in the local area, launched in Montecito in June of last year, followed by an event on the 1100 block of State Street in Santa Barbara in September. “No speeches, no awards, no politics,” is stated boldly on promotional material for each of the Common Table events so far, “just food, connection, and community.”

“This is very simply an opportunity for people of all backgrounds and from all corners of our community to sit down together at one long table around the commonality of food,” explained Todd Capps, executive director of the Lois & Walter Capps Project, a locally-based nonprofit organization that started the Common Table events. “There is no hidden agenda, no specific issue to debate or goal to achieve. The purpose is a return to human connection, neighbor to neighbor, face to face, based on some of the most basic and joyful things that bind us—food and music, and then on

the many other things we are bound to discover—or remember— that we have in common if given a chance to connect on a human level.”

Free and open to the public, Common Table will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 23. Attendees are asked to bring their own food, beverages (non-alcoholic) and utensils to the table. Organizers encourage people to purchase their food to-go from area restaurants and vendors, in support of local business. Santa Barbara Certified Farmers Market, which will overlap with Common Table on Linden Avenue, will be located on the 700 block for the afternoon. According to Capps, those from the Carpinteria community who are planning to attend include members of Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District, Santa Barbara County Sherriff’s Office, congregants of a local church, a Girls Scouts troop, members of a senior living community, a mobile home community, Girls Inc. members, Carpinteria Library staff and numerous local businesses.

“It has been a joy to work with the people of Carpinteria in preparing this event, starting with Carpinteria City Council, who voted unanimously in favor of the event, and even waived our event registration fee as an added gesture of support,” said Capps.

City votes to approve new protective regulations for mobile home owners

At the May 13 City Council meeting, councilmembers voted 3-0 (Mayor Nomura, Councilman Shaw recused) to approve a set of actions suggested by the Mobile Home Rent Stabilization Board.

These recommendations stem from the surge in mobile home spaces no longer being subjected to the city’s Rent Stabilization Regulations and include: • Require owners and managers to disclose information about the maximum rent for the space to prospective tenants • Require sellers and/or real estate agents to disclose the current rent and maximum monthly space rent to prospective buyers • Create an advisory portion of the Board to work with staff to hold education meetings for interested parties • Send a strongly worded letter to state legislators suggesting that they initiate and/or support legislation that addresses some of the existing ambiguities in the State Mobile Home Residency Law. In Santa Barbara County, Carpinteria has the highest percentage of mobile homes as available housing, making it one of the highest percentages in the state. As such, these ordinances affect a large part of the community. Paralleling the population impacted, three councilmembers asked to be recused because of conflicts of interest: Nomura, Shaw and Gregg Carty. However, with three members missing, a quorum could not be met, and city legal counsel followed procedure and randomly selected Carty to return to the dais and hear and vote on the report.

As rents continue to increase statewide, mobile homeowners are particularly vulnerable. City Manager Dave Durflinger explained, “They are an owner, they have a significant investment…and they are also a renter, a tenant. Urgency ordinance prohibiting scooters approved

In a 5-0 vote, City Council approved and adopted an ordinance prohibiting the use and/or operation of shared mobility devices and operators in the city of Carpinteria. This issue was previously discussed at the Feb. 11 meeting, when the council voted to direct the staff to initiate a process to regulate these devices.

Included in this group are any two or three-wheeled devices that do not have a docking station, but instead are accessed through an app or an on-demand portal.

This includes electric scooters like the

Lime or Bird scooters that have recently popped up in neighboring cities in Santa Barbara County. Currently, to the city’s knowledge, there are no active companies operating in Carpinteria. This ordinance was adopted in order to outline the city’s current stance as well as to give city staff time to investigate how these devices could potentially affect the community.

Opposition letter ratified concerning commercial cannabis regulations

City Council voted unanimously to ratify a letter opposing proposed California State Assembly Bill 1356, which, if implemented, would take away local regulatory authority in cities and counties with respect to commercial cannabis licenses. By approving the opposition letter, the city asserts its opposition to the bill before its upcoming State Assembly hearing.

Have you experienced the Museum of Tolerance?

a moNthly muse meliNda wittwer Children and teachers are gunned down while in school. Riots break out over racial prejudice. Foreigners are under suspicion and threatened with deportation. Places of worship become targets for angry militants brandishing assault rifles. All of these tragedies could—and should—have been prevented if only we humans could and would learn from our past.

There is a museum in Los Angeles that everyone should visit. It opened in 1993 and is “a symbol of society’s quest to live peacefully together” and “an important resource on how to achieve that goal.”

I first visited the Museum of Tolerance (MOT) when I was an eighth-grade teacher. The social studies curriculum included World War II and I was looking for a way to engage my students with the material. On the day we visited, each of my students was given a picture of a child that had been in a concentration camp.

Each student carried this picture until the end of our visit. Then, it was fed through a machine that printed out a simplified version of what happened to that child.

Did she live or die? Was he moved to different camps? Did her family survive? All the students carried this information home.

We also walked down a simulation of a German street. Recordings of conversations about the political context played around us. We walked through an area that was modeled after rooms where prisoners were gassed. We explored the Anne Frank exhibits. We charted places in the world where groups expressing hatred of others exist today. We went home convinced nothing like the Holocaust

would ever happen again.

My second visit to the MOT was even more powerful. I wasn’t teaching eighth grade that year but was asked to go to help monitor students. I didn’t know all the students and I was uncertain how they would behave. When an old man came out to greet our bus, I was afraid the students would eat him for lunch.

But this was a Holocaust survivor and he soon had all these students captivated by stories about his family, the camp he was sent to, how he survived his ordeal, and how he ended up in the US. Not one student acted inappropriately.

After I retired, I returned once more— this time with a friend who was visiting from the East Coast. We listened to a talk given by a Holocaust survivor. He told of his family being rounded up and stuffed in a cattle car and sent to a camp.

His mother did not survive the trip. He was 10 or 11 at the time; one night, one of the guards threw him against a barrack wall. Later in life, he had to have his kidney removed because it had atrophied from the damage. When the U.S. troops finally freed his camp, he hated everyone and wanted revenge. When asked what helped him, this survivor smiled down at an elderly woman seated in front and said, “I met my wife.”

The Museum of Tolerance is the educational arm of the Simon Wiesenthal Center. Somewhere along the way I decided to become a MOT member because I believe in the museum’s mission: “We hope to challenge visitors to confront all forms of prejudice and discrimination in our world today. We hope visitors become witnesses to history and learn about what others are doing to make a difference and how to get involved.” Perhaps if we all got a little more involved, we could help eliminate the tragedies that seem to plague us rather than endure them.

Hwy 101 southbound on-ramp opens at Casitas Pass Road

The new Hwy 101 southbound on-ramp at Casitas Pass Road opened on Wednesday, May 15. The new on-ramp is longer to meet current safety standards and make it easier for drivers to merge onto the freeway as it gives them more time to get up to speed. The alignment and layout of the new ramp has been enhanced to work with the new wider bridges over Carpinteria Creek, and it is built to work with the upcoming freeway improvement project that will add a third lane in each direction.

Closures announced for Toro Creek Bridge on SR 192

The Toro Creek Bridge will be closed on Friday, May 17 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. for work on the bridge deck. The closure will extend from Cravens Lane to Toro Creek Road with access to the closed area maintained for local residents. Bridge work will continue Monday, May 20, through Friday, May 24, from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

The Fighting Back Mentor Program to host informational event

The Fighting Back Mentor Program, a prevention program through the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, is looking to recruit volunteers. On Wednesday, May 29, at 5:30 p.m., at Island Brewing Company, Sally Green and Marybeth Carty will talk about their experiences as mentors and the effectiveness of the program. At present there are several Carpinteria students on the wait list for a mentor. The group hopes to match these students with a caring adult who can serve as a mentor before the school year is over. Snacks will be provided.

Refuse collection in Carpinteria delayed one day for Memorial Day

In observance of the Memorial Day holiday, employees of E.J. Harrison and Sons will be taking the day off on Monday, May 27. As a result, Carpinteria residential customers will have their trash and green waste collected on Friday, May 31, one day later than usual. Mark Toohey from the California Earthquake Authority (CEA)shared with Morning Rotary the reality of a major earthquake happening sometime in the next two or three decades. Spiritualism comes home to Summerland

Lathim, who is not a medium, said his visitations were visual.

The scene occurred on April 28 when Leslie Person Ryan, proprietor of Letter Perfect, hosted a “Spiritual Evening” in her store and gallery in Summerland.

Lathim was joined by Reverend Pamela Bollinger of the Spiritualist Church of the Comforter located in Santa Barbara.

During his talk, Lathim wound up a music box used by Mrs. Fisk, a popular early Summerland medium.

we continue to be spirits after we leave that form. These spirits exist to communicate with us, she said, bringing us comfort and helping us grow.

She explained the difference between physical mediumship where spirits are seen during a séance, and mental mediumship, where a medium sees or receives a message from a spirit to convey to a specific individual. Everyone can be a medium, she said, but most require instruction to develop their abilities.

Reverend Bollinger asked “those in spirit” if they had a message for anyone present. (No timid spirit would have dared to appear in that crowd.)

She, along with several mediums in training who accompanied her, reached out to a few in the audience with messages they were receiving from spirits.

One message concerned papers from a grandmother, and, indeed, the woman had recently received papers from a deceased grandmother.

A man standing on the stairs was told there was someone behind him, perhaps a sibling. He admitted that he had felt that presence before being told, but said he had no siblings. Later he confessed to forthat reservations the Call medium he had a brother who had passed away when he was younger.

Art in film at the Alcazar

Natural History Notes

They’re back… after nearly 30 years with only a few sightings, basking sharks have been spotted in the Channel. Weighing in at 8,000 pounds and measuring 33 feet long, they are notable for their large mouths. NOAA considers these sharks a “species of concern,” and little is known about them. What we do know is they won’t bite unless you are krill. Recent rains have meant more plankton and krill this spring, offering more food for them in local waters. These recent sightings could mean the basking shark population is starting to recover, or climate change is impacting their return.

Disturbances Visitors

Several disturbances were caused by beach walkers. A rare thunderstorm caused seals to leave the beach.

Over 1,003 people were recorded in the overlook, including tourists from Australia, Russia, Canada, Japan, Sweden, Brazil, Hungry, Portugal, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Alabama, Louisiana, Nevada, Michigan, Maryland, Arizona, Washington, Montana, Maine, Utah and Oregon.

The Carpinteria harbor seal rookery is located immediately east of Casitas Pier, between the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve and Carpinteria State Beach. Please remember not to bring dogs, bicycles or loud voices to view the seals. Harbor seals, when disturbed, may flee and become separated from their pups. Local writer Mark Brickley wanted to better understand the Beatles’ enigmatic songwriting, influences and recording techniques. After seven years researching and bringing to publication his book, “Postcards from Liverpool: Beatles Moments & Memories,” Brickley will share his secrets and sign copies of his book at the Friends of the Carpinteria Library annual dinner.

“Postcards” was originally published in 2017, but this month Brickley reissued the book with 25 new photographs and four additional chapters. Highlights of the new edition include a description of the author’s “meetup” with early Beatles drummer Pete Best and the backstory of how singer Engelbert Humperdinck kept the Beatles from reaching the top of the 1967 UK single charts. The reissue also includes a primer on how to grade and collect vintage vinyl and a guide to tour-

ing Beatles sites and festivals.

For Brickley, the Beatles hold a special place in music history, “It all comes back to their music,” he said, “It’s the joy you feel when you hear their harmonies. They recorded 219 songs in eight years. No two Beatles songs sound alike. It’s an astounding musical legacy and their 1960s songs still spark and glow.”

Brickley will give an audio-visual presentation with the assistance of local videographer Larry Nimmer. The presentation, “The Beatles Road to Stardom,” includes Beatles photos, music and video from 1956–1964. The event will also feature a live performance of Beatles songs from Brickley, John Cannon and Devyn Clayton.

Local restaurants + CEF = academic enrichment

Seven local eateries are making a big difference in the lives of Carpinteria Unified School District students. On the third Wednesday of every month, from September to June, Corktree Cellars, Uncle Chen, Peebee & Jay’s, Rori’s Artisanal Creamery, Yo Yum Yum, Padaro Beach Grill and Jack’s Bistro donate a portion of their proceeds to support the Carpinteria Education Foundation (CEF) Dine Out 4 Carp Kids program.

Founded in 2017 by CEF board member and CUSD parent Nikki Yamaoka, Dine Out 4 Carp Kids restaurants have contributed more than $10,000 to support local schools. “The inspiration for Dine Out 4 Carp Kids was to create a program that would benefit both our local restaurants and CUSD kids, and to give community members an easy way to contribute to our schools,” said Yamaoka.

“CEF, along with our Dine Out 4 Carp Kids partners, is proud to have sponsored both Every 15 Minutes and the CHS After Prom Party,” said Pam Werner, CEF Administrator.

On April 25 and 26, Carpinteria High School upperclassmen switched from book learning to real life lessons, focusing on the dangers of drunk/distracted driving. Every other year, English teacher Kelly Pierce and the CHS Associated Student Body organize Every 15 Minutes, which simulates a drunk driving accident and subsequent repercussions. The program is planned just before prom, in hopes of discouraging students from dangerous behavior.

Parents for CHS hosted their annual After Prom Party at Zodo’s on May 4 this year. After the dance, students were bussed from Carpinteria High School to Goleta, where parents and community members provided students with food, games, raffle prizes and a safe environment to celebrate this monumental occasion.

Artists Studio Tours bring art to life Photos by Debra herrick

This past Mother’s Day weekend, from Summerland to Carpinteria, artists flew open their studio doors for hobnobbing art enthusiasts on the annual Artists Studio Tour. The two-day event was coordinated by the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center to promote local artists and to supports arts programming—a portion of every sale is donated to the arts center.

Patrons chatted gleefully throughout the weekend, swapping tips for techniques and materials, perusing sketches and studies, observing art demonstrations, debating interpretations, and carefully choosing which pieces they’d tote home for their personal pleasure or collection.

“The light shines ahead.” These are miraculously among the final words my son Mathew shared with me before his accidental death, and it’s a sentence that helped me survive this terrible time. It’s through this journey from heartbreak to happiness that I learned there’s light in all of us, and it’s up to each of us to decide if we’ll use it to illuminate the way forward.

Losing my son due to a single poor decision he made, I set out to dedicate my life to spreading positivity and encouraging people to think about their actions. Having shared it with corporations, universities and schools, my story is one of overcoming grief, despair and lack of hope.

I’ve surfed across the globe—Rincon, Jeffreys Bay in South Africa, you name it. My favorite spot along the California coast is Hammonds Reef, where Mathew and I would spend days on the secluded waterfront. At times, he would sit next to me and throw his arm around my shoulder while waiting for a wave. It was a great feeling for a dad.

It was 2006 and an amazing time.

My wife Carla and I had just sold our apparel company and remained at the brand, working side-by-side in a Montecito design studio. Mathew, 15, had been facing challenges in school, and I wanted him to reconnect with our homeland of South Africa for a few months. He and Carla made the trip and Mathew started attending my old school in South Africa. It wasn’t long before he began to excel.

On April 24 of that same year, I spoke

with Mathew for the last time over a morning phone call. He read me an essay he had written about the essence of surfing. Four of his words stuck out to me in particular: “The light shines ahead.”

It was while looking out at Hammonds Reef later that day that I felt something was wrong. It was just too perfect. That sense of unease continued until I received a call from Carla. Mathew had died in an accident following a poor decision influenced by peer pressure.

“How is that possible?” I asked. “I had just been speaking with him.”

We were both destroyed.

Our lives changed in an instant, but it was literally a bolt of lightning that allowed us to again change course. Out of a cloudless sky, a single bolt of lightning struck the building where we were. It was from Mathew. It was our connection to the afterlife.

Knowing Mathew was still with us in spirit gave us the strength to move on.

Days were difficult, but Carla and I grew closer. It’s as if two trees fell in a storm, but in the process toppled into each other and stayed upright.

Our 9-year-old son, our second chance at happiness, is named Luke. After naming him we learned his name meant “bringer of light.” Luke brought the light back into our lives, echoing Mathew’s words. Those words helped me survive, and I hope to share them with everyone, in the hope that they’ll allow their own light to shine through the darkness.

Shaun Tomson is a former World Surfing Champion. He was named one of the 10 Greatest Surfers of All Time and one of the most influential surfers of the century by Surfer Magazine. He is the author of the best-selling books “Surfer’s Code” and “The Code – The Power of ‘I Will’” and he produced and cowrote the documentary film “Bustin’ Down the Door” (2006). His internationally acclaimed talks focus on activating the power of purpose to improve individual engagement and team performance. He lives with wife Carla and 9-year-old son Luke in Montecito, California.

In 2006, Shaun Tomson lost his son Mathew in a tragic accident.

Tomson is the 1977 International Professional Surfers champion.

Cate girls lacrosse team beats familiar foe for championship

After dropping two matches to fellow Channel League member, Dos Pueblos, earlier in the season, the Cate School girls lacrosse team broke through for a 6-3 victory at San Marcos High to capture the L.A. Lacrosse Foundation Division II Championship on May 10. Led by the strong overall play of Maddie Erickson, Lilly Rhiel and Piper Brooks, and a smothering defense backed by goalie Liza Borghesani, the Rams tied 1-1 at halftime, scored five goals in the second half, and ran away with the win. Cate finishes their improbable run to the title at 9-7 overall.

Cate got on the board first, as Brooks found Rhiel who swept in for the goal and a 1-0 lead, just a little over two minutes into the game. But the Chargers took little time evening the score. Brooke Essig took advantage of a penalty to make it, 1-1, with 18:22 left in the first half. With under 12 minutes remaining, Essig looked to give Dos Pueblos the lead but this time her shot was snagged out of the air by Borghesani. Later, Erickson delivered a deft pass to Kenzie Davidson, but Davidson’s attempt was denied by Chargers goalie Annette Bennett and the match remained deadlocked with a little over 10 minutes left.

Both goalies performed admirably; neither team was able to get the ball back into the net as the half wound down.

“We kept talking about how smart our team defense is and that our goalie will stop all the shots she can read,” said Cate coach Renee Mack. “So, if we can keep DP from turning our defense, and we can keep them channeled, then we’ll give all the shots to Liza (Borghesani),” explained Mack.

Cate received a big scare when Erickson

tumbled down to the field after taking a shot to the stomach and had to be helped to the sidelines. The Rams had another close call with three minutes left. Coraline Crannell connected with Olivia Geyling but Geyling’s shot was once again saved by Borghesani, and both teams left the field tied at halftime, 1-1. “They (Cate’s defense) were talking well, they were positive,” said Mack, confirming the strong play of Lily Zanze who was a stalwart on the back line.

The Rams came out with a lot of energy to begin the second half, buzzing around the Chargers’ net to open play. They took the lead on a goal by Davidson less than three minutes in, making it 2-1. The speedy Erickson gave Dos Pueblos all sorts of problems, as less than two minutes later, she tallied another goal.

At the 18:39 mark, Erickson flipped another past the goalie to give Cate a 4-1 lead. Following a Chargers timeout, Erickson buried another one into the back of the net for a 5-1 lead. “This was my last game and all of the seniors’ last games. We were just trying to have the best 25 minutes of our careers, I guess,” said Erickson of the team’s second half eruption. “Our seniors just stepped up today,” explained Mack, who also pointed out the strong play of one senior Andreah Graf.

Erickson added another bringing the Rams to 5. Rhiel’s second goal of the game increased the lead to 6-1 with 4:05 left. Essig net two more goals before the night was through, but it was too little, too late for the Chargers, as the Rams took home the crown.

Cate’s Buba Fofanah named to 2019 AllAmerica Soccer Team

On Tuesday, May 7, Cate School junior Buba Fofanah was named to the 2019 Allstate All-America Soccer team. According to a release provided by the Allstate Cup, Fofanah was chosen in collaboration with Allstate and MaxPreps.com to an elite group of soccer players who have demonstrated great play on the pitch. He was one of 125 male and 125 female soccer players from around the country to be named to this team. At a later date, 40 males and 40 females will be selected to the inaugural Allstate All-America Cup, which will take place this summer in conjunction with the Major league Soccer All-Star game presented by Target. This year, the game will be played in Orlando, Florida, on July 31. Cate coach Pete Mack praised Fofanah for his hard work and effort in reaching this milestone. “Buba is one of the most competitive players i’ve coached,” said Mack. “He’ll work to the point of exhaustion and then some, coupled with his speed and field sense, that’s really hard on opponents,” he added. Juan Carlos Torres of Santa Barbara High School was also named to the team.

Palminteri brought good luck to the gauchos who won the game 8-4.

United 10U girls win Strawberry Cup

The Carpinteria United 10U girls all-star team won its second tournament of the season May 11-12 at the Strawberry Cup in Camarillo. The local all-stars outscored their opponents 18-0 in pool play and then defeated the Santa Barbara Supernova all-stars 3-1 in the finals. Head coach Mike Miller said, “Our defense was outstanding all weekend. The girls really take pride in their defensive effort and it shows. On offense, Kaydance Gardner is a prolific scorer for us. She’s very talented on offense but also loves to play defense.” The United are 10-1 in tournament play this season and will travel to Huntington Beach May 18-19 where they hope to continue their winning ways.

Wrapping up an historic year for the Warriors, there were five Citrus Coast League Championships in the inaugural year of the new league (girls tennis, boys water polo, girls water polo, boys tennis and boys volleyball). Eleven of the 18 Carpinteria High School athletics programs advanced to the CIF playoffs, four made the quarterfinal round, two advanced to the semifinals (girls water polo and boys basketball) and one earned a trip to the CIF State Regional (boys basketball). Nearly 50 Warriors were named to Citrus Coast League All-League teams, and the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table honored Gabe Medel with the “Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award” and Luke and Solomon NahooikaikaAnderson were named “Student Athletes of the Year.” In addition, there were more than 280 varsity letter winners. But the sports season is not quite over; on Thursday, May 16, five Warriors will be in action when CHS hosts the CIF Individual Tennis Sectionals. Austin Stone will be the sole representative in the singles matches to be held at Cate School. Two doubles teams from CHS have qualified for the portion of the bracket that will take place on campus. Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson will team up with Kirby Zapata and Luke NahooikaikaAnderson will be paired with Cameron Gralewski.

May 10 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team’s playoff run ended in a quarterfinal game at home on Calderwood Field, as the Rio Hondo Prep Kares moved ahead to the semifinals with a 5-0 win. Miles Souza, Jacob Macias and Diego Hernandez had the Warrior hits, but Kares’ senior starter Evan Foor was able to throw a complete game shutout. The Kares jumped out to a 2-0 lead and the Warriors never recovered. “We had a good plan and did a reasonably good job executing the plan, but sometimes you have to tip your cap to the team that played better,” said Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney. “We would have liked the chance to continue to represent our supportive families and school community, however, we got to spend 10 extra playoff baseball days together and every single one of them was very valuable to each of us.” The Warriors finished 14-7 on the year, and Rio Hondo Prep improved to 16-7.

“Shazam!”

“Shazam!” is not a kids’ movie featuring Shaq as a genie, but it does feature kids and magic. One such kid is Thaddeus Sivana (Ethan Pugiotto).

He’s got a mean dad and brother, and, on one cold night in 1974, they are having a fight in the car when, magically, Sivana gets whisked away to another realm where a wizard (Djimon Hounsou) tells Sivana he is looking for a new champion to help round up the Seven Deadly Sins, which have been released on Earth. But Sivana is a bad boy who is tempted by the Sins, so Wizard sends him back to the car where Thaddeus makes a ruckus, distracts his dad, and causes a car crash.

Zoom ahead to present day and another bad boy, Billy Batson (Asher Angel), is making his own ruckus around town. Like Sivana, he’s got some parental issues—namely, his parents abandoned him and so he was forced to bounce around various foster families.

However, unlike Sivana, Billy finally ends up with a cool foster family (an impossibly cool foster family), including parents who care and foster siblings who are polite and caring (again, impossibly polite and caring). Billy’s roommate, Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer)—not to be confused with the Atlanta Braves first baseman—is all into superheroes and is especially cool.

Billy is deemed worthy to be the wizard’s champion. So the wizard makes him a superhero—i.e., Shazam (Zachary Levi).

Shazam is super-fast and strong, bulletproof and can shoot electricity out of his body.

At first Billy/Shazam just plays around with his powers like any kid would, and doesn’t really use them for good. But then Freddy calls him out.

(Basically: “With great power comes … yada yada yada”). Then, Siv-

ana—now Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong)— reemerges as a super villain and, after killing his mean dad and brother, comes after Shazam. So, Billy/Shazam has to kick it into gear and play the superhero.

There’s a fight, kids vs. adults, and it looks hopeless, then not, and then … well, I’ll let you guess. If your guess is based on your knowledge of some very standard, unoriginal superhero plot, your guess is probably completely right.

So, yeah, “Shazam!” is unoriginal. I guess the foster-kid thing, and the parent problems in general, are supposed to be a different angle. (Though, don’t most superheroes have parent problems?) But ultimately it’s like flat soda: No fizz. No pop.

And insofar as you like epic superhero battles, “Shazam!” is likely to disappoint you. That’s only the last little bit of the movie. The bulk of the time is spent on uncompelling backstory and adolescent hijinks.

Now, I didn’t loathe “Shazam!”— and, to be fair, it seems like a lot of other people liked it. I just didn’t know why I should care about it or its characters, or why I should be interested in it, or, even, why I should want to watch it.

“Shazam!” is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of action, language and suggestive material.

Track and field

May 11 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team came away with three medals, all of them sixth place at the CIF Division IV Track and Field Finals at El Camino College in Torrance. Senior Ytxzae Enriquez was the first competitor for the Warriors to medal in the 1600 meters since Coley Candaele in 1990. He ran 4:33.30 minutes for sixth. Tennis star Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson showed his speed on the track by placing sixth in the 400 meters. He finished at 50.54 seconds. Also, in the same race was Victor Rinaldi whose time of 50.81 was fast enough to finish in eighth place. Both runners ran personal bests and it was the first time Carpinteria has had two runners under 51 seconds in the same race. Senior Isaac De Alba was also a medalist for the Warriors with a 45 foot, seven and ¾ inch distance in the shot put.

Carpinteria’s other entry in the meet, the four x 400 relay squad finished eighth with a time of 3:33.03. The team was comprised of Mateo Handall, Luke NahooikaikaAnderson, Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson and Victor Rinaldi.

A woman was told by Smart & Final management that she was not welcome in the store. The woman grabbed a wine bottle from a nearby shelf, threw it on the ground, breaking it and causing less than $400 in damage. Smart & Final management signed a citizen’s arrest on the woman for vandalism. She was arrested and booked into jail without incident.

10:44 a.m. / Drug Crimes / 1100 block Casitas Pass Road

A 33-year-old female Goleta resident was reported by the gas station clerk to be under the influence. She was contacted by her vehicle. She was found in possession of suboxone, a loaded syringe of heroin and two methamphetamine pipes. She was booked into jail without incident and her vehicle was released to her mother.

A deputy was in the parking lot at the Bluffs when a white pick-up truck pulled in and parked. Since the lot is closed after dark, the deputy went over to tell the people in the vehicle. A woman was contacted in the driver’s seat and the deputy immediately noticed symptoms of intoxication. He put her through SFST’s and upon arrest, she blew .22 and .23 on the PAS. The woman was booked at county jail and her boyfriend was released to a sober friend.

12:42 a.m. / Drug Possession / Via Real at Bailard Avenue

A deputy had a vehicle fail to dim his bright lights. The deputy made a U-turn to stop the vehicle, but it immediately parked in the Red Zone and the driver began walking away. The deputy stopped him and asked for identification, plus registration. The man was found to have an uncapped syringe with suspected heroin. A further search found a usable quantity of suspected heroin. The man was arrested and booked at county jail.

Public Notices CITY OF CARPINTERIA ORDINANCE NO. 729 AN URGENCY ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CARPINTERIA, CALIFORNIA ESTABLISHING INTERIM REGULATIONS PROHIBITING THE USE AND/OR OPERATION OF SHARED MOBILITY DEVICES AND OPERATORS WITHIN THE CITY WHEREAS, pursuant to the City of Carpinteria’s (“City”) police power, as granted under Article XI, section 7 of the California Constitution, the City Council of the City (“City Council”) has the authority to enact and enforce ordinances and regulations for public health, safety and welfare; and WHEREAS, the California Vehicle Code (CVC) allows the use of motorized scooters and electric bicycles on certain roadways, CVC Sections 21206 and 21225 permits local jurisdictions to adopt regulations to manage the registration of motorized scooters and electric and conventional bicycles, as well as their operation and parking on local streets and pedestrian paths; and WHEREAS, the City Council has received information through staff reports that in many cities and counties use / operation of share mobility devices on public streets, sidewalks and other public spaces has created hazardous conditions and contributed to death, injury and inconvenience to the travelling public; and WHEREAS, in response to public health and safety risks, many California cities and counties have elected to regulate and/or prohibit the use/operation of shared mobility devices within their jurisdictions; and WHEREAS, pursuant to its police powers, the City has authority to regulate, including prohibiting, the use and/or operation of shared mobility devices in any street or public right-of-way, or other public place within the City in which the public has the right of travel; and WHEREAS, in order to allow time for City staff to study and draft, and for the Council to consider, regulations concerning shared mobility devices without the potential for the negative effects of such use on public health and safety to be experienced in Carpinteria, it is necessary for a temporary prohibition to be established.

WHEREAS, California Government Code Section 36937 authorizes the City to adopt regulations that take effect immediately to preserve the public peace, health, and safety of the community; and WHEREAS, the City Council has determined, by at least a four-fifths (4/5) vote, that this Ordinance is adopted pursuant to the requirements of Government Code Section 36937, is a matter of City-wide importance, is a reasonable and necessary measure designed for the immediate preservation and protection of the public peace, health, and safety of the community, and is in accord with the public purposes and provisions of applicable State and local laws and regulations.

NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Carpinteria does hereby ordain as follows: SECTION 1. Recitals Incorporated The above recitals are true and correct and are incorporated herein, and are each relied upon independently by the City Council in its adoption of this Ordinance.

SECTION 2. Declaration of Urgency The City Council of the City hereby finds and declares that, for the reasons set forth in the above recitals, there is a need to adopt this Ordinance establishing interim regulations prohibiting the use and/or operation of shared mobility devices and operators within the City. City staff requires time to study issues surrounding shared mobility devices, including evolving state and federal laws, and time to participate in the process initiated by SBCAG, so that it can propose appropriate regulations ensuring that the effects of shared mobility devices and operators on the health, safety and welfare of the residents and businesses of Carpinteria are adequately addressed.

SECTION 3. Interim Urgency Regulations In accordance with Government Code Section 36937, and pursuant to the findings stated herein, the City Council hereby: (1) finds that there exists a current and immediate threat to the public peace, health, and safety requiring this Ordinance to take effect immediately; (2) finds that this Ordinance is necessary for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health, and safety as set forth herein; and (3) declares and imposes interim regulations prohibiting the use and/ or operation of shared mobility devices and operators within the City for the immediate preservation of the public peace, health, and safety as set forth below: A. Shared mobility devices and operators are prohibited in all zoning districts in the City and may not be established or operated anywhere in the City.

B. For purposes of this Ordinance, the following definitions apply: 1. “Shared mobility device” means any two- or three-wheeled device that has handlebars and is designed to be powered by an electric motor or other electric power source, or to be powered by human

propulsion, that is accessed via an ondemand portal, whether through a smart phone, access code, I.D. card, or similar method; and is operated by a private entity that owns, manages, maintains, and/or insures devices for shared use by members, which are available to members in unstaffed, self-service locations.

2. “Shared mobility device operator” means an individual or a public, private, or non-profit entity that owns, manages, maintains, and/or insures devices for shared use by members, which are available to members in unstaffed, self-service locations.

SECTION 4. Immediate Threat Based on the findings herein, this Ordinance is adopted pursuant to California Government Code Section 36937; adoption of such Ordinance is required to address the current and immediate threat identified by the City Council to the public peace, health, and safety of the City’s residents that would result from unregulated use and operation of shared mobility devices throughout the City.

SECTION 5. Effective Date This Ordinance is an urgency ordinance enacted under Government Code section 36937 This urgency ordinance is effective May 13, 2019.

SECTION 6. Amendment of Ordinance The City Council by ordinance after notice of public hearing and by the affirmative vote of at least four-fifths (4/5) of the City Councils may modify, amend, delete or add to this Ordinance upon a finding that such action will implement and enforce the goals, policies, and purposes of this Ordinance.

SECTION 7. Publication The City Clerk is directed to certify this ordinance and cause it to be published in the manner required by law.

SECTION 8. Study Staff is directed to study and analyze issues related to the establishment or operation of shared mobility devices within the City, including but not limited to, evaluating conflicts in state and federal law concerning the validity of the legislation, the potential impacts of such activities on public peace, health and safety of the community, the desirability of such activities in various zones, and the extent of regulatory controls, if any, to impose on such activities.

SECTION 9. Interpretation and Severability This Ordinance is intended to be consistent with state and federal law, and is not intended to regulate in any area preempted by state or federal law. If any section, subsection, sentence, clause, phrase or word of this Ordinance is for any reason held to be invalid by a court of competent jurisdiction, such decisions shall not affect the validity of the remaining portions of this Ordinance. The City Council hereby declares that it would have passed and adopted this Ordinance, and each and all provisions hereof, irrespective of the fact that one or more provisions may be declared invalid.

SECTION 10. CEQA Exemption The City Council finds that this Ordinance is not subject to the California Environmental Quality Act (“CEQA”) pursuant to the CEQA Guidelines, California Code of Regulations, Title 14, Chapter 3, sections: 15060(c)(2) (the activity will not result in a direct or reasonably foreseeable indirect physical change in the environment); 15060(c)(3) (the activity is not a project as defined in section 15378); and 15061(b) (3) (the activity is covered by the general rule that CEQA applies only to projects which have the potential for causing a significant effect on the environment). The proposed ordinance maintains the status quo and prevents changes in the environment pending the completion of study and any amendment to the municipal code deemed necessary. Because there is no possibility that this Ordinance may have a significant adverse effect on the environment, the adoption of this Ordinance is exempt from CEQA. Carpinteria holds a place, albeit a small place, in the history of flight. Our little town boasted the South Coast’s most popular airfield prior to the 1930s construction of Santa Barbara Airport on Goleta slough and pasture lands. Local air shows, like the one pictured above circa 1929, drew residents from up and down the coast. Many notables landed here, including Howard Hughes and Col. Charles Lindbergh. The airstrip was located on the Coast Highway, which is now Carpinteria Avenue, in the area now occupied by Carpinteria City Hall.

Donna Lemere wrote in the following clarification to the Throwback Thursday, “Homes for sale,” printed on May 9 (Vol. 25, No. 33): “The Carpinteria Realty office (1917) built by George Gilbert ‘Bert’ McLean was actually originally located on the corner of Linden and Carpinteria avenues where the former Bank of America is located. The building at 5030 Carpinteria Avenue (now Rabobank) was built later, and Carpinteria Realty and Insurance relocated to that building sometime in the 1940s.

The original building at that corner was demolished and the bank building was built later and first occupied by Security 1st National Bank.”

Howard School students participated in a technology workshop facilitated by Procore software engineers and Cate School high schoolers. Engineering comes to Summerland

Mechanical Engineering students from Santa Barbara City College helped Dr. Shannon Colson’s second/third grade Summerland Elementary class design, create and launch rockets on Thursday, May 9. Colson’s son Nicholas Coletti organized the project along with Bianca Vasquez, and they also recently taught the rocket design class to Carpinteria High School girls. Coletti and Vasquez have started the Society of Women in Space Exploration club with the goal of working with Carpinteria and Summerland students to empower everyone to grow to their highest potential and encourage girls/young women to pursue careers in engineering. Their efforts have been recognized by the Jet Propulsion Lab, and both Coletti and Vasquez have received summer internships there. Next school year, Coletti plans to broaden the project with the assistance of Fire Inspector Mike Lomanaco to provide greater access to safe engineering activities for Summerland and Carpinteria students.

Telling a tale of two cities with CVN

Marilyn Jenkins and Gerald Lubeck recently made a 10-day trip to London and Paris to visit her newlywed daughter and son-in-law. Highlights of the trip included perusing the Coastal View News over lunch on the 35th floor of the Sky Garden overlooking downtown London, and a rousing performance of “Hamilton” at the Victoria Palace Theatre. They reached new heights in Paris when they climbed to the top of Towers of Notre-Dame (before the fire of April 15). They also accidentally participated in a large demonstration condemning lack of government action regarding climate change.
