Briefly Chamber announces State of the Community luncheon

The Carpinteria Valley Chamber will host their annual State of the Community luncheon on Friday, May 18, at Rincon Beach Club at 11:30 a.m. Guest speakers include Peter Rupert, PhD, Carpinteria Mayor Fred Shaw and 1st District Supervisor Das Williams. Rupert, executive director of UCSB’s Economic Forecast Project, will present an economic update for the area. Shaw will detail legislative matters currently being considered by the City Council, including a sales tax, cannabis regulations and efforts to restore beaches. Finally, Williams will speak about the county’s budget, libraries and mental health services.

Franklin Trail closures posted

Franklin Trail visitors should expect interruptions to trail access due to construction operations supporting Southern California Edison’s Santa Barbara County Reliability Project. Due to the trail and project sharing the same road and paths, detours are not possible. Interruptions to trail access could exceed several hours. SBCRP activities will affect approximately 3.5 miles of the Franklin Trail from 0.5 miles past the Trail Head to approximately 0.75 miles from the end of Franklin Trail at the Los Padres National Forest. Closures are scheduled for Thursday, May 10, Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

While Franklin Trail is closed SCE/H&M will pull wire to the new towers. With the trail route crossing many times under the path of the wires, the closure is intended to ensure the public’s safety.

A special election will be held June 5 for Santa Barbara county voters to choose statewide primary candidates for Calif. Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General, Senator and House Representative for the 24th District. Registered voters will also elect their State Superintendent of Public Instruction, County Superintendent of Schools and county Sheriff, among other key elected public officials at county, state and national levels.

A cannabis tax—Measure T2018—will also be on the June 5 ballot. Measure T2018 would allow the county to tax cannabis operations within unincorporated areas of the county, and is estimated to raise $5 to $25 million annually.

The Santa Barbara County Education Office has named Mandi de Witte, a biology and environmental science teacher at Carpinteria High School, the 2019 Santa Barbara County Teacher of the Year. An eight-year classroom veteran, de Witte is in her second year of teaching at Carpinteria High. She also serves as the school’s Science Department chair.

“Mandi engages her students and makes clear for them the real-world applications of what they are learning,” said Santa Barbara County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Susan Salcido.

“The eagerness with which her students participate in classroom activities demonstrates their excitement for learning and their respect for her as their teacher and role model.”

“Our teachers serve over 69,000 students in 20 school districts,” Salcido concluded. “Being selected Teacher of the Year—and representing all the remarkable teachers throughout Santa Barbara County—is a tremendous honor.”

De Witte was selected after a comprehensive review process conducted by a five-person committee. The committee consisted of administrators, local business leaders and last year’s Teacher of the Year, Oak Valley Elementary School’s Jennifer Cline.

“We were inspired by each of the five finalists whose classrooms we visited,” said SBCEO Director of Teacher Programs and Support Steven Keithley. “It’s a lot of work on the nominees’ part. The applications are extensive, and each of them undergoes a rigorous review process. We were impressed by them all, and we also know Mandi will be a great ambassador for education in Santa Barbara County.”

De Witte will become the county’s designated representative on July 1, when she succeeds Cline as Teacher of the Year, and her nomination for consideration as California’s Teacher of the Year will begin sometime in the fall of 2018. The state winner will then move forward in the competition for 2019 National Teacher of the Year.

“Mandi is an extraordinary teaching talent,” said CUSD Superintendent Diana Rigby. “She is incredibly bright and inspires a real thirst for learning in her students. Mandi has

Yes to cannabis tax

I’m voting “Yes” on Measure T2018 despite feeling that Carpinteria’s concerns have not been adequately addressed in the development of the County’s cannabis regulations. In fact, that is precisely why I am voting yes. As many have observed, we take the brunt of the impacts here because of our town’s proximity to so many greenhouses, and the salient impact is unquestionably the odor.

The best way to minimize this impact is to enforce the law. Without the taxes this measure will raise, there will not be sufficient funding to proactively enforce the regulations. The licensed operators have already shown they want to be good neighbors and control odor, and are motivated to do so to renew their permits.

However, the black market growers have no such concerns and have a competitive advantage due to avoiding the expense of odor control equipment. They will continue to thrive and keep stinking up the town if we don’t have “cannabis cops” on the beat.

Carpinteria’s tallest trees

The City of Carpinteria must not allow the Sanitation District’s poorly conceived plan to redesign their office building to go forward. The current design proposal requires cutting down the most magnificent trees in Carpinteria. These trees are thriving, and they are the tallest, largest, greenest and most beautiful trees in the city. They comprise a forest ecosystem that supports many kinds of wildlife, including nesting owls, migrating butterflies, mating hawks and other animals.

These enormous trees are a miracle of the living world, and we need to preserve them as part of this beautiful city.

Any architects worth their salt would recognize the beauty and value of these trees, and would plan a building and landscape to incorporate them and make them a feature and focal point. Not to do so would be a failure of imagination, a failure of good design and a failure to understand the nature of the living world. The trees are a treasure, providing benefits to the people, the birds, the animals and the natural environment of the city. To cut them down would be a crime against Carpinteria. Instead, we need to preserve and protect them.

Please go see and enjoy these magnificent living beings. The trees are located at the east end of 6th Street. And join us on May 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the Sanitary District meeting as we talk to our city leaders about this issue, which is truly important to the people of Carpinteria.

DLI, a model for academic performance

Claims made by Mr. Nevens concerning DLI programs are unfounded. He is requesting more data or “proof” that DLI programs work. To that I would suggest that he and others who are skeptical look to the research.

We have so much available concerning DLI education. We no longer need to be skeptical, we can be educated. One such study (Valentino, R.A. & Reardon, S.F., 2015) done at Stanford University in partnership with SFUSD is a large-scale quantitative analysis of the effectiveness of these programs. The researchers identified a group of about 18,000 English-learner students who entered kindergarten between the fall of 2001 and 2010, and followed their progress for 10 years. Results show that while students

LETTERS in English immersion programs perform better early on, by the end of elementary school and into middle school students in bilingual classrooms not only catch up to their English immersion counterparts, but they eventually surpass them, both academically and linguistically. Reardon commented, “A lot of people worry that students in bilingual and dual immersion programs might never catch up, but this study shows convincingly that they do catch up and, in many ways, outperform their peers over time.”

Additionally, Mr. Nevens mentions a school in SB that agreed to a “unique experiment ...a last-ditch effort.” I can only assume he is speaking of Adelante Charter School – the only DLI program in Santa Barbara. He has his facts mixed up.

The school was never split in two tracks, actually the school is a thriving model of DLI education, experiencing similar results to the above mentioned research.

Latino students have historically and continue to be marginalized in our schools. DLI provides an opportunity for them to perform as well or better than

their English only counterparts. Why wouldn’t we want that for the children in Carpinteria?

Aliso supports Spanish academics

The article (“School Board sidelines DLI extension proposal,” CVN, vol. 24, no. 32) regarding Aliso teachers and the expansion of the DLI pilot did not represent our concerns. The teachers who spoke at the board meeting were bilingual veteran teachers, fully capable of teaching a DLI program, if determined to be in the best interest of students.

Our concern is that the program be successful for all students. For years, we have focused on bridging the achievement gap of economically disadvantaged, and Spanish-speaking students. We have implemented rigorous programs in both writing and math. We are about to adopt

a new language arts program. We began a program that promotes teamwork and engineering skills. We have talented teachers hired to prepare students to have the skills and motivation to attend universities. Aliso was recognized as a high achieving Title I school. We strive to serve students better.

We promote bilingualism and acquiring Spanish as a second language. It concerns us that preschools have switched to English. Kindergarteners used to come to Aliso stronger in their native language.

We offered Spanish to English speakers, and Spanish development and literacy to Spanish speakers, until under Proposition 227 this was not allowed. We don’t want to implement a program that still needs development and evaluation. Switching language instruction has a greater impact on Spanish speakers, who may not have an English-speaking parent to fill in the gaps. This is why we want to be cautious about accelerating the expansion of DLI. We have a great investment in the success of students. We want to promote bilingualism, and ensure that our program meets the needs of all students, allowing them to attend universities, and lead fulfilling lives. We support the acquisition of Spanish, and the academic development of Spanish as a native language. We look forward to exploring options that support these goals.

Lee Clark 2/1957 – 4/24/2018

Lee Clark was born in 1957 in Santa Barbara, Calif. to John and Marge (Chock) Clark (Hawaii) and raised with his sister in Summerland, attending school there and in Carpinteria. Surrounded by loving family and friends, Lee lost his twoyear cancer battle at age 61 on April 24, in a Santa Barbara hospice. He lived in Ventura with his wife of 14 years, Sharon (Thompson) Clark, who survives Lee along with his children Matthew Sheehan Clark (wife Emily), Jenny Lin Clark, Michelle Marie Clark Wolff (husband Logan) and Nicholas Stuart Clark (wife Monica), all of Montana, stepdaughters Kaylene (partner Chan) and Janelle Jaworski, and six grandchildren, in addition to his parents and sister, Lin Clark Miller, brother-in-law Wilson, niece Maia and nephew Liam Miller. Lee will also be remembered lovingly by uncles, aunts, cousins and countless friends in California and Hawaii. Cherished memories of Lee include a sincerely caring and loving son, husband and father, and the best big bro a sister could want, generously bestowing “the best hugs in the world.”

The Food Liaison’s Nirasha Rodriguez wins Spirit of Entrepreneurship Award As a young girl Nirasha Rodgriguez would play “restaurant” at home while waiting for her dad to return from work.

Raised by her father, Rodriguez would set the table, put Kenny G. on the radio and create a menu—pricing in hugs and kisses of course. Today, Rodriguez feeds 1,000 to 4,000 people daily through her Carpinteria-based business, The Food Liaison, and is this year’s Spirit of entrepreneurship Award winner in the hospitality and tourism category.

A self-taught chef with a degree in fine art, Rodriguez brings her background in photography to artfully compose and balance plates with a variety of textures and flavors. While a student at Brooks Institute, Rodriguez would often host dinner parties. At one such get-together a friend invited her to pick up gigs in catering. Cooking came easily to her and she fell right into the field. “I didn’t want to be in the restaurant business because of the hours but I’m a better chef than photographer,” recalls Rodriguez. “It’s my calling. It’s truly my passion. I eat, drink and sleep food.”

How did Rodriguez learn without formal culinary training? According to the chef, she understood basic technique and paid attention when other people cooked.

The Spirit of entrepreneurship Award honors successful women entrepreneurs at all levels in our region. Finalists are selected by independent judges from outside the area to ensure nominee selections are based entirely on their merits.

“Nirasha was recognized as one of our finalists for the past two years before

winning this year, so her persistence paid off,” said Cathy Feldman, CeO and board president for Spirit of entrepreneurship Foundation. “And she is especially deserving this year, when she and The Food Liaison stepped up to serve the community after tragedy struck. I think the judges were very impressed by that.” Rodriguez also won the Successful entrepreneurs Giving Back award in the

amount of $10,000, which was presented at the gala as a surprise.

“I was not prepared for such a distinguished honor,” said Rodriguez. “It was great to be surrounded by such strong and incredibly hard working women.”

For Rodriguez, being an entrepreneur and leader is recognizing that accomplishments are not top-down, but rooted in a great team. “The team is the pedestal, without them TFL would not be where it is at today. It took three years to build that team. I’ve learned a lot and now I finally feel confident.” Rodriguez and Jason, her business partner and husband, have high standards, expecting excellence at all times, but within a workplace culture where the team can enjoy working.

Things like music, lighting, having a huge walk-in and keeping an easy organization system, help their staff avoid monotony when cooking for so many.

What’s next for Rodriguez and her team? “We are excited to continue The Food Liaison’s efforts of giving back by continuing to raise funds and support our community on fundraising, education and agricultural levels. Our ‘community’ kitchen has created the perfect culture to manifest such support and our team works really hard to make it happen.”

Author Christian Beamish to give author’s talk at Friends of the Library meeting

Local author Christian Beamish will speak at the annual Friends of the Library meeting on Wednesday, May 16 at 7 p.m. at the Carpinteria Community Church.

Beamish will talk about his adventures sailing solo along the coast of Baja California in a small boat he built himself, a tale told in his memoir, “The Voyage of the Cormorant.” Tickets cost $10 for nonmembers. Q & A with Christian Beamish CVN: What made you think that sailing the Pacific Coast of Baja California in an open boat by yourself was a good idea?

Christian: The concept came to me gradually. Building the boat, the lines of the hull seemed very seaworthy and I had a sense that this ancient design (a Shetland Island beach boat), with its Norse lineage and seafaring heritage, might be capable of long-distance travel. Initially, I sailed locally, just learning the boat and practicing with it. Over time, I became more confident and made the crossing to Santa Cruz Island from Ventura, then made a test-run in Baja. It all went really well, and so I decided to really go for it with my “big trip.”

CVN: In “Voyage of the Cormorant” you write about something you call “blood memory.” What is that about?

Christian: We tap into a long line of experience in our most elemental practices: cooking certain foods, walking in nature, sailing and rowing wooden boats (among other things). These activities resonate physically, as our present-day bodies are inherited from ancestors who were themselves formed by physical work in particular environments. I’ve had a strong sense of this in clearing underbrush in the forest and in soldiering with the Navy Seabees—a clear, physical manifestation of latent experience felt in both fear and

familiarity, activated by circumstances.

It’s subtle and strange, and I’ve only had it a few times, but the field of epigenetics is sneaking up on an explanation of the phenomena, which is basically experience imprinted and passed through DNA. CVN: You also write about technology, or wanting to escape its reach.

Christian: Yes, indeed. There is no better antidote to too much screen time than open water and remote country. That said, I use Instagram, email and watch TV. I think it takes a lot of savvy to sift through the layers of information that come at us via the supercomputers we walk around with in our pockets. It’s seductive, all these images and the way that our interests become self-referencing, possibly reducing our exposure to ideas that could help expand our sense of the world. This is something I think about a lot as a husband and father of two small children.

CVN: Do you sail with your kids?

Christian: I launch off Fourth Beach from time to time with my daughter Josephine, who is 6, and son Miles, 3—our last “voyage” was late Summer 2017, and we sailed to Rincon, then way out to the derricks and tacked back in to Carpinteria against the afternoon breeze. We pick our days and everyone wears their lifejackets, always! At some point, I want to make the crossing to Santa Cruz Island again.

Josephine is keen to do it, but we’re in ongoing negotiations with Mom for her OK. CVN: What do you want to do next with “Cormorant”?

Christian: I would like to find a way to fully fund a program that would have youth in Carpinteria build a Shetland Isle beach boat like “Cormorant,” learn to sail and row it, then launch their own expeditions (guided by experienced sailors). FFA finds its footing at Carpinteria High

The FFA program at Carpinteria High School recently received a matching grant of $120,000 via the South Coast Region Agricultural Education Consortium.

CHS Principal Gerardo Cornejo said the funds were not matched dollar for dollar, but rather based on the amount the school spends on salaries for agricultural education. “It’s money the state made available to ag programs,” Cornejo said, “that made it possible for us to participate.” Top among the newly acquired equipment is a fresh off the showroom floor, 2018 Chevy 2500 4 x 4, four-door, diesel truck with an animal trailer, which should meet the program’s transportation needs well into the future. “(The grant allowed) us to maximize our monies,” Cornejo said.

Additional items from the grant include a new TIG welder, ACDC welder and safety equipment for the agricultural mechanics class taught by Allison Leete, as well as a 30 x 60 foot greenhouse, new tack boxes for the animals and new tables and chairs in the agricultural biology classroom.

Tami Ryan, the head of the agricultural program at CHS, noted that students who participate in FFA begin to develop a pathway to getting accepted to competitive agricultural programs at universities like Cal Poly SLO, UC Davis and Fresno State, which can lead to many career options, including veterinary medicine.

“Ag goes into tech in this day and age too,” Ryan said, mentioning the biology and chemistry involved in enology—the science of wine making, the use of drones to oversee fields and the science-based study of land and soils.

Courses in floral production, tractor restoration, environmental horticulture science and agricultural biology are currently offered in the CHS agricultural program, and Ryan said veterinary science will be a new offering next year.

In her first-year teaching in Carpinteria (after 22 years teaching in districts near her home in Nipomo) Ryan says she is excited about continuing the work moving forward. Events like the California Women in Agriculture’s Tri-Tip BBQ fundraiser allowed students in CHS’s FFA to attend the state conference in Anaheim this year, and a grant program through Phillips 66 brought an additional $2,000 to the program—all of this on top of the grant through the South Coast Region Agricultural Education Consortium.

On May 8 at 7:30 a.m. at the animal pens on campus, freshman Issac Castillo mucked out the stall where his pig Charlotte lives. As his pig happily grunted through her morning feed, he said “I’ve only had her for four days,” adding, “I’ve just started FFA but I like it, and I see myself continuing.” Ryan pointed out that Castillo wrote a letter in response

The importance of volunteers

LIVING THE GREEN LIFE ERIN MAKER One of the things I love the most about what I do is sharing my passion for the environment with other people. I had a teacher in third grade who shared his love of science and the planet with his students, and it was something that set me on the path that led me to where I am now.

Working for a small city means that what I do is a lot more varied than it would be in a larger organization, but it also means that I get to be more involved with the community. But I can’t be successful in my work without the help of volunteers.

Without volunteer efforts, International Coastal Cleanup Day wouldn’t be a success. The same is true for critical programs all over the world that work to improve access to basic things like clean water, health care, energy and a long list of other things. We are fortunate to live in a place where we can drink the water that comes from our tap—a convenience that is not available to millions of people all over the world. In many cases, the people who help communities with projects to improve sanitation and water quality are volunteers who donating their time and resources. The same holds true for doctors and nurses who share their expertise to help people who would otherwise not have access to medical attention because of poverty, distance, war or any number

of circumstances.

What does all this have to do with living green? Carpinteria is a unique and beautiful coastal town, and the people who live here work to keep it that way.

Volunteers are a very important part of the cleanup activities and restoration work that happens via the programs I manage. People have thanked me for holding a cleanup event, but the ones who deserve the most thanks are the people who volunteered for the dirty and unglamorous job of picking up trash.

Each piece of trash we pick up is one that won’t make its way the storm drain system and end up in local waters.

I recently attended a training that focused on the global single-use plastics problem. It is estimated that by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean—a startling and scary estimate. In my lifetime, we have come to depend on single-use plastics for so many things that many can’t imagine life without them.

Bottled water is an excellent example of that. While bottled water has been around for a long time – since the mid-1700’s— plastic water bottles didn’t start showing up in stores until sometime in the 1970s.

While bottled water is often seen as a safer alternative source for water, a 2018 study led by the State University of New York at Fredonia found that 92 percent of bottled water from major brands all over the world has microplastics contamination.

Those microplastics start off as large pieces of litter that photodegrade over time into smaller and smaller bits until they become invisible to us. Volunteers who help catch those items before they reach the ocean are critical to changing the course of the plastics crisis. I held a

Several volunteers also assisted with a beautification project along the Santa Monica Creek path, planting wildflowers and other native plants. To every person who picks up trash on a walk or at the beach whether or not it’s a designated volunteer cleanup day, I say thank you. And thank you to everyone who volunteers their time,

because without all of you, people like me wouldn’t be able to do the work we do.

Young Writers Camp partners with Girls Inc. for new Carpinteria program

The Young Writers Camp, a nonprofit program of the South Coast Writing Project at UCSB, will expand its reach in 2018 with a new program at Girls Inc. of Carpinteria for boys and girls in grades 4 to 9. “Opening up a camp in Carpinteria allows us to serve a new portion of the county, which we hope will include not only Carpinteria, but possibly children in Montecito, Summerland, Southern Santa Barbara, and those who commute south for work,” said Young Writers Camp Director Nicole Wald. “As with all our camps, the teachers are some of the best in the profession, and we’re so thrilled to bring their talents to help develop a new community of writers.”

Now in its 28th year, a typical day of Young Writers Camp includes journal writing and structured writing workshops, with time for peer mentor groups. The camp strives to provide opportunities for youth to develop a deeper understanding of the writing process and what it means to be a part of a writing community. In Creative Writing camps, students engage in a broad spectrum of fiction and nonfiction genres, from poetry to narrative, expository to memoir. In programs with a digital emphasis, campers learn about writing for blogs, videos and other multimedia applications.

In recognition of the impact disasters have had, an early bird registration rate of $325 for Girls Inc. of Carpinteria will extend to May 15. Sibling discounts, scholarships and school group discounts are available. All skill levels are welcome, with the main prerequisite being a love of writing, or at minimum an openness to learning about writing. See strengths before deficiencies. Appreciate. Be grateful. help people build resilience and faith in themselves. Science supports the deep-gut feeling that mindfully choosing positive responses to life’s circumstances can improve mood and health. Our bodies and minds are complex, interrelated systems and a little push here can result in a little pull there.

Seemingly little things like how we explain a bad day to ourselves or how much we reveal to our friends about our private struggles can add up to a big difference in how we cope. how can we help bring out the best in people and in ourselves?

There’s a subtle but important difference between asking “how are you coping?” and asking “What happened?”

In terms that we can relate to after fires and floods, the first question elicits the affirmative survival story; the second, the disaster story. “how are you coping?” implies he IS coping and asks him to notice the ways he is using his resources to make it. “What happened?” asks him to relive a painful or traumatic experience.

Coping is about pulling on strengths to move forward.

When presented with a complaint or a problem, listen carefully. Repeat

what was said to be sure both that you understand it and that the other person feels heard.

Ask, “What is it that you really want?

I understand that you are not happy with the way things are, but tell me what is it that you want instead?”

Reflect what you heard—The Flip.

Describe what the person really wants in a two- or three-word phrase—an affirmative topic.

The author suggests practicing asking of yourself, “What do I really want?” We get so used to the way we do things that sometimes our pattern is to complain without actually identifying alternatives that would work better and thinking about ways to change the bothersome or troubling situation. It doesn’t feel great to complain or to wallow in a situation we know isn’t healthy—it certainly doesn’t give us lots of warm fuzzies. “Appreciative Leadership” points out that every complaint is a “dream wanting to be expressed.” What’s the dream? Try to figure it out. Maybe making it more real by naming and visualizing what would be better will help move in that direction.

Like all important things, this is so much easier to write than to do. That practice thing mentioned above? Yeah.

It takes serious control to be affirmative in interactions, to be appreciative first, to see people’s strengths and help them find their hope. And it feels truly the right thing to strive for, for myself and the people in my life.

Running a business is hard but rewarding. Ditto for being a mom. Is combining the two twice as hard and twice as rewarding? CVN sat down (or, more accurately, followed around) four moms who divide their time between nurturing their businesses and their children—often managing both at once. Meet four women who do it all and are proud to claim the rewards and honest enough to admit that it is sometimes really, really hard.

When Amy Dunn and her friend Matt Chung got the opportunity to purchase the Carpinteria United Studios of Self Defense in late 2016, they took it. For Amy, that meant folding business ownership into a life that already included three kids and a fulltime job at Community West Bank in Goleta.

Her two sons had joined the Linden Avenue studio, and Dunn enrolled in a “moms train free” promotion in an effort to get back into shape after having her third child. “I’ve always been one to accept a challenge, so I just dove in,” she said.

Soccer had always been Dunn’s sport, and at first she saw karate as a stepping stone to condition herself in order to get back on the soccer field. But she took to karate quickly, rising through the belt ranks and becoming an instructor.

She developed a strong community within the dojo, which became a comfortable place for kids and mom to train.

When she and Chung bought the business, they did it with the community in mind. The USSD approach reaches well beyond fitness. Students learn discipline, self-control and how to be good citizens. Dunn felt that she and Chung would help to shape the next generation of givers and doers by keeping the studio open.

Balancing business ownership and motherhood comes with challenges, Dunn said, but her family supports her and understands the importance of her work. Dunn’s husband plays bass in a band, and their marriage relies on mutual respect for each other’s interests outside the house. Her kids love the idea of Mom being a sensei, and they have learned important life lessons by witnessing the hard work and sacrifice that come with chasing a dream. “You have to put in the hard work,” Dunn said she teaches her kids.

Katherine Lesh, Farm Cart

Katherine Lesh launched her first business in 2012 while most of her peers were still choosing a college major. The 21-year-old and her then boyfriend, now husband Jason Lesh opened the Farm Cart at the corner of Carpinteria and Maple avenues. “When I opened it, I didn’t know anything about business. I didn’t know anything about anything,” she remembered with a laugh.

Six years, a wedding and two babies later, Katherine has learned a lot about a lot. Business has steadily grown at the Farm Cart, which sells organic produce from local farmers. Katherine manned the cart six days a week until baby Chandler was born in 2015, at which point she reduced her hours but could still be found with a baby on her chest or toddling around the pocket park several days a week.

Organic farming and even the Farm Cart itself are throwbacks from Katherine’s own childhood.

Her father, Tom Shepherd, started farming organically in 1973, long before farm-to-table was a household term. Katherine’s parents originally opened the cart on the same corner when Katherine was about 8, though it was closed and collecting dust off site for several years before Tom passed it on to Katherine and Jason.

Nowadays, with 7-month-old Bodhi in the mix, Katherine rarely works the cart, but she is often working. Jason manages a 1-acre farm at Pacifica Graduate Institute, and Katherine puts her energy into a subscription-based weekly produce box business. In the last few years she has expanded the membership from about a dozen to over 300.

She and Jason both care for the kids, which is how Katherine has managed to grow the farm box business so dramatically. Bodhi bounces around in a baby carrier strapped to his mom while she packs boxes, and Chandler feeds the chickens and samples the strawberries as her parents work the farm at Pacifica. Two kids has doubled the difficulty of being a mom boss, but Katherine considers herself lucky to provide her children with a farming lifestyle, keeping them nearby while she builds an organic empire.

A week before Mother’s Day, Yudith Alcaraz sat in her salon chair while her 19-year-old daughter Natasha straightened her hair. Natasha was 8 when her mother took a chance on herself by opening Yudith Salon in downtown Carpinteria.

The mother of four children who range in age from 3 to 21 now considers the salon the best decision of her professional life—the best but not the easiest. She puts in long hours away from her Oxnard home, and at no point did that pain her more than when her two oldest daughters, now 21 and 19, were in middle school. At the time, Alcaraz’s husband worked at night, so the girls sometimes came home to an empty house after school. Alcaraz shed many tears over her unavailability during the challenging adolescent phase, but now her girls have grown into two strong, independent women who are proud of what their mom has accomplished.

Alcaraz has a deep faith in God and believes that he pushed her along the path to success. As a 29-year-old hair stylist diving into business ownership, she remembers just one moment of serious worry. She stood by the door of the salon in the midst of the remodel and realized, “Oh, my God, I am scared.

Please, God, send me a message. I want to hear you.” As soon as she thought it, longtime client Margie Rose popped into the salon to tell Alcaraz how thrilled she was, and that she would tell all her friends to come to the salon. Just like that, Alcaraz’s fears were allayed.

Now her daughter Natasha attends beauty school and hopes to follow in her mother’s footsteps. Alcaraz encourages her to become a stylist, but has told her that she’ll need to work in other salons before claiming a space at Yudith Salon.

“I don’t want to make it easy for her,” Alcaraz said, knowing that the best things in life are the ones you work hard for.

Emlynn Tursick, Empower Fitness

Emlynn Tursick wove motherhood into owning a business as gracefully as she weaves a dozen pull-ups into her workout. The fit-as-a-fiddle mom to 3-year-old Sadie never missed a beat when it came to pregnancy or raising a little girl.

Tursick opened her gym, Empower Fitness, in 2016 when Sadie turned one. She had been training clients for 11 years, and continued to do so right up to labor.

There she was, sporting a spandex-covered baby bump instructing her loyal bootcampers at Linden Field until Sadie decided she was ready to arrive. “It wasn’t a big deal,” Tursick said as if describing a leisurely walk at six months pregnant, not kettlebell lifts at the end of her third trimester.

And shortly after becoming a mom, Tursick was back at it, toting Sadie around in a front pack while demonstrating the finer points of exercise. She wanted to jump back into it immediately, she said, because her work is her passion.

Opening the gym was no easy feat with an infant, but again Tursick took it in stride. The space at 4180 Via Real became available, and she couldn’t pass it up.

She developed her work schedule at the gym around Sadie’s sleep schedule, and being a new mom made her empathetic to other moms looking to improve their fitness but struggling to find the time. Empower has a fully stocked playroom and offers childcare during 8:30 a.m. classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Working moms can feel battered by dueling pressures, but Tursick is proud to be a role model to her daughter as the owner of a business that revolves around good health. She loves what she does, and she wants Sadie to see that following your joy and working hard are crucial to a happy life.

Santa Paula takes Carpinteria, dashes hopes for CIF

Riding a four-game winning streak and vying for a spot in the upcoming CIFSouthern Section playoffs, the Carpinteria High School baseball team on “senior day” hosted Tri-Valley League rival Santa Paula on May 8. Clinging to a 4-3 lead going into the final inning, the Warriors surrendered three runs in the top half of the seventh, as the Cardinals went on to a 6-4 victory at John Calderwood Field.

As a result, Carpinteria, who needed to win the final two games to qualify for CIF, was eliminated from the tournament for the first time in five years.

Junior Chase Mayer started on the mound for the Warriors, pitted against Mark Cortez. Both pitchers seemed to be in control in the first three innings as Mayer struck out five, allowing no runs and one hit, while Cortez struck out two, also not giving up a run and yielding one hit. But, the fourth inning was a different story.

Cardinal senior captain Bodde Stewart led off the inning with a single to left, followed by two bunt singles to load the bases. Santa Paula’s junior catcher Gabriel Tovias was struck by a Mayer’s pitch to produce the game’s first run, and sacrifice fly then earned the Cardinals a 2-0 lead, and sophomore Malik Hernandez drove home another run to make it a 3-0 game.

But Carpinteria countered as freshman Miles Souza started the bottom half of the inning with a single. Sophomore Jacob Macias was able to reach base, and an errant throw placed runners on first and third. Then senior Christian Pena, in his final home game, doubled down the left field line to cut the lead to 3-2. Mayer then helped the cause with another double to tie it at three apiece. “That was really a good response to the tough top half,” said Warriors coach Pat Cooney. “I think early in the season we had some trouble

when they scored to respond to that … they responded exactly right and came back,” added Cooney.

Carpinteria took the lead when yet another senior, Dominic Sturdivan started in the fifth inning with a single and scored as a result of two Santa Paula errors, to put the Warriors up 4-3. Mayer hung onto the lead into the seventh, but got taken out in the final inning after giving up a leadoff single. Junior Noah Nuño would come in to relieve, giving up Stewart’s third hit of the game which put Cardinals on first and third with nobody out. Santa Paula’s Evan Acevedo’s ground ball would find its way through a drawn-in infield to drive in two runs, and the sophomore came around to score himself on a Warrior error to take a 6-4 lead.

Carpinteria stranded a runner in the final frame, as they fell to 8-11 on the year and 3-8 in League. Despite the loss, Cooney appreciated the efforts of his seniors. “Most important, in the big picture, it’s senior day, it’s an accumulation of a lot of work … we spent the day honoring them whether we win the game or lose the game,” said Cooney. Andrew Giamoni, Juan Gomez, Armando Guerrero and Toby Spach join the other graduating seniors.

May 2 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team grabbed an 8-1 victory at home over Nordhoff, as pitcher Chase Mayer improved his record to 4-4 on the year, guiding the Warriors to their third straight win. Mayer gave up four hits, while striking out eight and allowing an unearned run, the Rangers only scratch of the game. The Warriors tallied four in the second inning after Jacob Macias opened the scoring by driving in Dominic Sturdivan. Macias led the Carpinteria attack as he collected three hits, two RBI and scored a run, while Sturdivan and Miles Souza each had two hits and scored. “Good pitching and timely hits were the difference today. Mayer works very hard and brings confidence and calm to the defense …” said Warriors coach Pat Cooney. Carpinteria moves to 7-10 on the year and 2-7 in the Tri-Valley League, as Nordhoff falls to 1-19 overall and 0-10 in League.

May 4 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team beat Nordhoff 6-3 in Ojai for a season sweep of the Rangers and their fourth consecutive win. Warriors’ junior lefty Noah Nuño toed the slab for Carpinteria and picked up his third win of the year, only giving up four hits and striking out three over six innings. Freshman Miles Souza picked up the save, as he tossed a scoreless seventh and secured the victory.

The Warriors scored three runs in the first inning without a hit—pushing three more across home plate in the second on a hit by Jacob Macias, a sacrifice fly by Chase Mayer scoring Macias, a hit by Nuño that scored Tony Pozos before and Christian Peña also scored on a wild pitch that got away from the Nordhoff catcher. “Catcher Toby Spach had another nice defensive day as zero balls went to the backstop, and we were able to erase a runner that strayed too far off first,” said Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney. The Warriors are now 8-10 overall and 3-7 in the Tri-Valley League and end the regular season against Santa Paula who are one game ahead in the standings.

May 3 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team in the Frontier League’s final tournament placed third with a score of 472. “Jacob Mata took advantage of the par 70 Mountain View Golf Club in Santa Paula (the tournament hosted by Santa Paula) using long drives to card an 87,” said Warriors coach Chris Cochrane. Caleb Nangle was second for Carpinteria with an 89. The two sophomores were voted Second Team, All-league. “I was also pleased with the focus and improved play of freshman Diego Mendez and sophomore Gage Dinning,” said Cochrane whose tallies of 93 respectively, helped the Warriors qualify for the bronze medal.

May 3 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team won the Frontier League outright, with a 13-5 win against Foothill Tech at Ventura College. It was the Warriors’ second Tri-Valley League title in a row as they were co-champions last year. “We had sweeps at every position with Solomon Nahooikaika/Kirby Zapata not dropping a game,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant. Cameron Gralewski won two matches with Luke Nahooikaika, and one with his partner from last year, Esteban Zapata. Jackson Phillips/Ian McCurry went 2-0 and Steve Poulos/J.R. Hajducko went 1-0. “In singles, Jeremy Saito had a rematch and a prematch as he beat Ethan Wang in a tie break, he just played him two days ago in the League tournament with Jeremy winning in three sets,” explained Bryant. And, in a pre-match, Saito lost to Yuvi Narang 6-3, but will face him again in the Frontier League finals May 10.

May 4 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team were well-represented in the Frontier League Tournament. In the Singles Finals number-one Yuvi Narang of Foothill Tech defeated Number-two Jeremy Saito of the Warriors, 6-0, 6-1. Both Narang and Saito qualify for the CIF Sectionals on May 24. In the third-place match, number-three Ethan Wang of Foothill Tech defeated number-four Myles Morgan of Carpinteria, losing 7-6(3) and 7-5. In Doubles Finals, the Warriors’ number-two team of Luke Nahooikaika/Cameron Gralewski defeated Carpinteria’s number-one squad of Solomon Nahooikaika/Kirby Zapata, 2-6, 6-4 and 6-2. Both doubles teams qualified for the CIF Sectionals on May 24.

Softball

May 3 – The Carpinteria High School softball team lost a Frontier League match at Nordhoff, 10-0. “We committed seven throwing errors and gave up only one hit that allowed Nordhoff to score seven runs,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales. The Rangers were able to score three more runs in the next three innings. “We also had good (hitters) at bats, but the ball found a glove most every contact,” said Gonzales.

The Warriors overall are 10-5, and in League, 2-3.

May 7 – The Carpinteria High School softball team dropped a Frontier League home game versus Grace Brethren, 6-1. The Warriors were able to get on the scoreboard when Isabel Studt crossed the plate from second on a single by Amanda Blair. “We were able to load the bases twice in separate innings, but couldn’t get the key hit,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales of his team’s loss to the first-place Lancers.

Overall, the Warriors fall to 11-6, and in League, 3-4.

Track and field

May 3 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team competed in the TriValley League (TVL) Championships with the boys and girls teams both finishing in second to Foothill Tech. “Best combined finish for the Warriors in many years,” said Carpinteria coach Van Latham. Wyatt Stevenson qualified for the CIF Division IV Prelims with victories in three events: the 100, 200 and four x 100 meter relay. Stevenson’s time of 10.94 seconds in the 100, bettered the mark of Bryson Frazer who ran the race in 11.13 seconds for the Warriors in 2013. The relay team of Solomon Nahooikaika, Saul Hernandez, Roderick Hutchinson and Stevenson set a seasonal best of 43.98.

Carpinteria athletes qualifying for the CIF Prelims on May 12 at Carpinteria included Isaac De Alba, who won the shot put with a personal record (PR) toss of 44 feet, nine and ¼ inches. Hutchinson was the winner in the long jump, while Nahooikaika, who finished behind Stevenson in the 100 and 200, had two PRs of his own. Jose Alvarado qualified in both the shot and the discus, and David Torres qualified in the discus only. Shaya Alexander who had been battling the flu all week, was the TVL champ in the long and triple jumps for the girls. Yvette Zamora was a double qualifier, winning the 300 hurdles with a PR of 50.38, and finishing in second in the 100 meter hurdles.

Alejandra Cardona also qualified in the 100 meter hurdles with a third-place finish.

May 3 – The Carpinteria High School swim team collected another league championship for the boys with the girls finishing in second place. The boys 200-yard medley relay team of seniors Ryan Fly and Jordan Perez, sophomore Nathan Endow and freshman Beau Persoon swept the competition with a first-place finish while qualifying for CIF with a 10-second drop in time, finishing with a time of 1:54.21. Fly won both the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 5:33.24, and the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:01.32 to defend his titles from last year. “Sophomore Nathan Endow had a huge swim in the 200-yard Individual Medley with a four-second drop from Tuesday to out-touch the first-place seat to win and qualify for CIF,” said Warriors coach Matt Organista. Persoon also took the win in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.26 seconds and Perez took second at 24.35, both qualifying for CIF. Perez also dropped half a second to win the 100-yard back stroke to qualify for CIF with a time of 1:01.52.

The girls 200-yard medley relay team of sophomores Sydney Endow, Lexi Persoon, Olivia Sheaffer and junior Jessica Cruz took second place while qualifying for CIF with a time of 2:10.12. The girls 200-yard freestyle relay team of Endow, Persoon, freshman Mia Cox and Cruz took second place while qualifying for CIF with a time of 1:58.34. The girls 400-yard freestyle relay team of freshmen Kate Gay, Cassidy Hajduko, Cox and Sheaffer took third place with a time of 4:54.87.

The boys 400-yard freestyle relay team of juniors J.R. Hajducko, Liam Slade, Jack Gay and Endow took the championship win with a time of 4:03.52. Hajduko and Gay both made championship finals, scoring fifth and third place with respective times of 1:26.17 and 1:22.86. In the boys 200-yard freestyle relay Persoon, Hajduko, Fly and Perez took the win while qualifying for CIF with a time of 1:42.49.

This count varies due to the size of weaned pups. Pups grow quickly on the fat-rich milk of female seals. They can double their weight by the time they are weaned at about 24 days. Once a pup is weaned, the mother shows little interest in her offspring. Pups learn to catch and eat shrimp and bottom-dwelling crustaceans after they are weaned.

The overlook saw about 940 visitors from places as varied as Germany, england, France, Switzerland, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Colorado, Washington, Illinois, California, Oregon, Michigan, Georgia, New York, Ohio, Alabama, Tennessee, West virginia, Texas, Oklahoma, vermont, Florida and Missouri.

Disturbances

The seals were frightened into the ocean by a vehicle on the pier. Several dog owners had dogs off leash, but seals weren’t disturbed.

Natural History Notes

Harbor Seals can live up to 35 years. They can weigh up to 300 pounds. They are multicolored, easily blending into their surroundings. There is no visible difference between males and females. They “haul out” in familiar protected spots away from predators. Their spots have easy access to foraging areas where they can find food. When not actively feeding, they haul out to rest.

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY “When I was growing up we had family dinner every night all together at the same dinner table. Out of my three siblings, I always had to be the one seated next to my mom. I wouldn’t let anyone else have the chair next to Mom. I am now 25 years old and they still make fun of me for always doing that. I will forever be a momma’s boy and proud of it!”

This proud momma’s boy is Carpinterian John B. Jimenez, and his words paint a touching picture of the relationship between mothers and sons. In honor of Mother’s Day, I reached out to some of these sons for a glimpse into the impact their mothers had in their lives—but first, a bit of history.

It is interesting to note that Mother’s Day was in great part born from two mothers who sought ways to protect sons from the ravages of war, and reunite families torn apart. Julia Ward Howe, writer of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” first suggested a “Mother’s Day for Peace” in 1872. Her appeal to womanhood throughout the world was her reaction to the terrors of the Civil War and Franco-Prussian War. She rallied women for meetings, appealing to war mothers who had suffered “the waste of that human life of which they alone bear and know the cost.”

Julia’s efforts were unsuccessful, but in 1905 Anna Jarvis spearheaded the official observance of Mother’s Day to honor the memory of her mother, Ann Marie Jarvis.

Again, war was an impetus. In 1868, after the Civil War ended, Ann Marie Jarvis encouraged families divided by the conflict to set aside their animosities on a Mother’s Friendship Day, which was to “revive the dormant filial love and gratitude we owe to those who gave us birth.

To be a home tie for the absent. To obliterate family estrangement. To make us better children by getting us closer to the hearts of our good mothers. To brighten the lives of good mothers. To have them know we appreciate them, though we do not show it as often as we ought.”

Mrs. Jarvis wisely spoke to the hearts of everyone by appealing to that great love we all have for our mothers, and

in doing so she created a very moving event that elicited a watershed of tears.

Several Mothers Friendship Days were held afterward, but it was not until Mrs. Jarvis’ death in 1905 that her daughter Anna spearheaded the movement to celebrate Mother’s Day every year on the second Sunday in May—the anniversary of her mother’s death. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day a national holiday, stating that mothers were “the greatest source of the country’s strength and inspiration.”

Walter Farfan wrote about that great source of strength and inspiration by sharing this about his mother Sara FarfanCancino: “My mom taught me first and foremost that if you want something in life you have to go for it, because if you wait around for fate to happen, you could be waiting there for a while. She had a saying that to this day I use as my motto—If I don’t cheat, steal or lie, I can always hold my head up high. My mother was raised in a time in which women stayed home and watched over their children. What I appreciated from that experience was that growing up, I always felt like I had someone in my corner. Then I got older and realized that raising a family is not easy, and women do this and also manage a career. So I learned that women are to be respected for the simple reason that they do twice the work than men and should be compensated accurately. My mom, without having to say anything, is my hero, and as she ages it is my time to step up and be there for her. It’s the least I can do. I have had high and low points in my life and my mother has been my rock that I can always count on. She taught me what unconditional love looks like and what a hero is to me. My mother is the strongest woman, and I love and respect her for all that she sacrificed for our family.”

While celebrating Mother’s Day this year, along with the cards and flowers, sprinkle in a few questions for your mom.

Ask about her childhood or a first love.

Ask about the stories her mother used to tell, and watch for the shine in her eyes, for that is the greatest gift she can give to you.

May 2 – The Cate School baseball team dropped a league contest when they fell to visiting Santa Clara by a score of 4-2. Cate picked up two hits on the day, both coming from the Deardorff brothers, junior Jack who tallied a double, while freshman William had a single and a run scored. Senior Will Bowlin entered the game as a pinch runner and later came around to score. Sophomore Dalton Phillips got the start for Cate and went five and 1/3 innings. “Despite the tough loss, I’m proud of our effort, our team battled hard and they continue to show great heart,” said Rams assistant Dave Soto.

May 5 – The Cate School baseball team kept their playoff hopes alive with a 6-4 win on the road over Santa Clara in Oxnard. Senior Patrick Armstrong led the way for the Rams going two-for-two with an RBI. Freshman William Deardorff was onefor-two with an RBI, while freshman Daniel Panadero also had a hit for the Rams, going one-for-four. Junior Jack Deardorff reached base, and later came around to steal home. “The big hit of the day came off the bat of Zach Hanson, Class of ’21,” said Cate assistant Dave Soto. Jack Deardorff picked up the win on the mound, as junior Ethan Cassulo was called upon to close the game, throwing two innings of relief to seal the deal.

May 7 – The Cate School baseball team dropped a League contest to Thacher in Ojai, 10-3. Junior Ethan Cassulo and freshman Daniel Panadero both singled for Cate, while freshman William Deardorff scored a run, as did his Cate teammates Cassulo and Panadero. Sophomore Dalton Phillips got the start for the Rams, going three and 1/3 innings before turning the ball over to Cassulo. “While the Rams did not have their best game defensively, there were some great plays from sophomore Will Anderson and junior Jack Deardorff,” said Cate coach Dave Soto. Boys tennis

May 3 – The Cate School boys tennis team participated in the Tri-Valley League (TVL) singles and doubles championships. Cate sophomore Ethan Ha repeated as the TVL singles champion with a 6-3, 6-2 win over junior Charlie Quest from Villanova. The Cate doubles team of senior Charlie Morris/sophomore Devin Pai took third. Ha’s victory capped off a nearly perfect season, winning 35 of 36 sets he played this season, helping the Rams to a second-place finish in the TVL and a 7-5 record overall. “I’m so proud of Ethan’s accomplishments leading the team at the top all season,” said Rams coach Jason Ebin. “As a coach, I really couldn’t ask for more from a player,” added Ebin.

May 5 – The Cate School boys volleyball team swept Santa Ynez in the first round of the CIF playoffs. Sophomore Theo Mack had three blocks and 14 digs while hitting a .380 ratio on offense. “Junior setter Sebastian Richardson set a nice match, moving the ball around and making some great saves on defense,” said Rams coach K.C. Collins. Freshman libero Albert Barber garnered 11 digs while brother junior Cullen Barber racked up nine digs, three blocks and hammered 10 kills. “Middle sophomore Ethan Ng had a solid night of blocking, deflecting many balls to our defense as well as recording two blocks,” said Collins. In the third set, middle Carson Williams added four blocks, and came up with six digs in the back row.

May 8 – The Cate School boys volleyball team lost to San Luis Obispo, 3-0. Theo Mack led the team with 11 kills and three service aces and brought up eight digs. “(Sebastian)Richardson did a great job hustling to the passes and provided nine digs for the team,” said Rams coach K.C. Collins. Albert Barber had 11 digs and a service ace. Carson Williams knocked down four kills, while Cullen Barber added a service ace and four kills from the outside as well. “Senior Ian MacFarlane stepped up in the last match of the year by putting up a solid block on the right side,” said Collins.

May 3 – The Cate School girls lacrosse team, the number-four seed beat numberfive seed Glendale in their last home match of the season. The Rams took an 8-2 lead in the first half. “You can only control the control-ables, said Cate assistant Amy Venditta “And today the seniors Brie Walker, Hailey Panzer, Julia Farner and Margaux Vitols controlled the field,” Rams coach Renee Mack added. In the back, Liza Borghesani had six saves. The Rams improved to 16-0 in the Southern Section, only to fall to Redondo Union in Culver City in the semifinals, finishing at 16-1 on the year.

Sarah Gore Maiani delivers a powerful speech to CHS students on how important it is for young people to vote.

Under new California state law, teenagers are now allowed to pre-register to vote at 16 years of age. In an effort to encourage teens and young adults to pre-register, register and vote, the League of Women Voters of Santa Barbara held a special event for seniors at Carpinteria High School on May 1. Guest speaker Sarah Gore Maiani, an activist and daughter of Vice President Al Gore, gave students an inspirational speech on the importance of voting and getting involved. “Voting makes you a decision maker,” Gore Maiani told students before opening up her talk for a question and answer period.

Over 160 students submitted registration and pre-registration forms, according to Jane Benefield, League member. Benefield helped to organize the event with Linda Reimel. “In past years, the interest has been lukewarm… Not anymore. I’m thrilled.”

Proceeds from the sale of tickets benefitted the Fire Department Swift Water Rescue Team to purchase new gear, the Tomol Interpretive Play Area’s maintenance, as well as a wide variety of community projects throughout the year that Rotary supports.
