City partners with nonprofits to address homelessness CVN REPORT

Homelessness takes a toll both on the individuals experiencing it and the communities around them. The city of Carpinteria has partnered with several agencies, nonprofits and community volunteers to help connect homeless people with services and housing, and to address the myriad impacts of people living on the streets.

The city expressed growing optimism that new funding and collaboration will improve the ability to reach the homeless population and connect people with permanent housing. “We have an organization in place that can really effectively address homelessness in Carpinteria now, and I’m really excited about that,” City Manager Dave Durflinger told the City Council during an April 22 presentation on homelessness.

“It’s difficult work. It doesn’t mean that something’s going to happen overnight. These are very challenging issues.

But these folks are making a difference.”

United Way’s Home for Good and the County of Santa Barbara are collaborating with the city of Carpinteria to address homelessness locally. Studies show that people who are chronically homeless are two to three times more likely to succumb

viduals were provided with supportive housing, and two individuals were reunified with family members. Another Carpinteria reunification is currently in progress.

While there are many challenges to placing homeless people in housing, Carpinteria’s small size and low availability of housing units makes it particularly difficult. “The problem that we have here is that a significant portion of the homeless population in Carpinteria is devoted to Carpinteria in the same way that we are,” said volunteer Dave Moore. It is harder to connect Carpinteria’s homeless with long-term housing opportunities that arise in other parts of Santa Barbara County.

Homeless individuals often face mental and physical health issues. Along with the challenges of finding them supportive housing are the challenges to the community that come from people living on the streets. Public drinking, smoking, littering, defecating, urinating and storing personal items in public places are some of the issues that impact Carpinteria residents and businesses. Carpinteria Code Enforcement staff works closely with the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office and Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District to minimize these impacts on the public.

Currently, an AmeriCorps volunteer dedicates 25 hours each week to homeless outreach in Carpinteria. Travis Baxter

from Home for Good noted, “That’s more than one worker hour per homeless individual in the community. It’s a really good ratio. We’re able to help a lot of people that way.”

Homeless outreach now involves Coordinated Entry System, a process designed to ensure that all people experiencing a housing crisis have fair and equal access and are quickly identified, assessed for, referred and connected to housing and assistance based on their strengths and needs. The new Carp Connect collaborative located at the Veteran’s Memorial Building, holds Coordinated Entry System intake hours every Wednesday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Point-in-Time counts have been taken every other year to gather data about the homeless population throughout the county. The 2019 count was held on Jan. 24 with 449 trained volunteers. County representative Kimberly Albers reported that 1,803 homeless individuals were counted countywide, a drop from the 1,860 counted in 2017.

Countywide, 27 percent of the homeless individuals counted were in vehicles, 37 percent in shelters, and 36 percent on the street. The count documented 118 veterans, 423 people who are chronically homeless (over a year homeless and with a permanent disability), 93 unaccompanied youth and young adults (age 24 and below), and 115 families (including over 200 children). When asked where they were living before becoming homeless, 76 percent answered Santa Barbara County.

Thanks to new funding availability, Pointin-Time counts will be held annually for at least the next few years.

In Carpinteria, Americorps outreach, weekly homeless lunches and outreach coordination meetings allow for regular contact between the homeless and those that can connect them with the services they need. The communication among agencies and nonprofits reduces redundant efforts and builds on shared knowledge.

Home for Good holds a Carpinteria Regional meeting monthly that is open to public. Baxter hopes to engage more participation and encourages members of the public to come share their concerns or offer a service, such as haircuts. Anyone interested should contact Baxter at travis@liveunitedsbc.org.

Surge in kindergarten readiness shows impact of Children’s Project

Carpinteria Children’s Project celebrates 10 years

in research it’s common to ask, “What do the numbers tell us?” After a decade of integrating early education with a network of family resources, the numbers indicate that the carpinteria children’s Project is working. in 2009, when ccP opened its doors on the old Main School campus, 15 percent of children tested as kindergarten-ready on entering their first year of school at Carpinteria Unified School District. At the start of the 2018-19 school year, 44.6 percent were kindergarten-ready and 83.6 were almost ready.

The group that came together to propose and launch the project—whose mission is “to build a culture of success, through community partnerships, where all children are successful cradle to career”—has been called “visionary” on more than one occasion. On May 6, at the organization’s 10-year anniversary party, Maria chesley, the executive director since 2013, thanked key supporters and donors, as well as staff members, “the people who get down on their knees to talk with children and listen to the needs and fears of parents.”

Over a dozen independent organizations are part of ccP’s in-house network of family resources located on the same campus as an early childhood center and after-school program. Approximately 500 families are on each organization’s docket, with about half seen each month on the ccP campus. “ccP is a family resource center for parents and family strengthening, because parents make the biggest difference for kids,” said chesley, “parenting classes are given in Spanish and english.”

The idea to set up a “one-stop shop for families, a place to give kids a leg up,” was inspired at the time by the Harlem children’s Zone, a model that ccP followed before adapting to a Strive Together approach, and later, the Population Health approach they now employ. key players in setting the project in motion and navigating district and city approvals were Michelle robertson who was ccP’s executive director, 2010-2013; Lois Mitchell who at the time worked for the Orfalea Foundation; Jon clark, president of the JS Bower Foundation; and Phylene Wiggins, a carpinteria resident who worked at ccP when it launched on behalf of the Santa Barbara Foundation. The Hutton Parker Foundation, La centra Summerlin, The Wood-claeyssens Foundation, The Outhwaite Foundation, Linked Foundation, First 5 and United Way were also instrumental in getting ccP off the ground with seed-funding. ccP’s business model changed in January of 2017, when after years as a department of Carpinteria Unified School District, the project began operations as a nonprofit. “Most people bravely stayed with us,” said chesley noting the challenges of the transition and the strength of the administration, “Last month we had our first successful audit and today we’re holding our first event with donors.” Affectionately calling the last 10 years “the warmup,” chesley noted a few directions that might change in the near future for the project. if passed, State Bill 436, would make family resource centers recognized abuse centers. Also, the project has already implemented a new carpinteria Aces and resiliency Project, forging pathways for growth in further serving families’ mental health and wellness needs.

CUSD Superintendent Diana Rigby added that 67 percent of district students are poor, “We are working hard to close the pernicious achievement gap…. Today nearly half of students are ready for kindergarten” up from 15 percent in 2009,

“that’s thanks to the project.”

Noting his own family’s “multi-racial” make-up, First District Supervisor Das Williams, whose daughter Y’ash attended daycare at ccP, said, “this program breaks all stereotypes and any reason that anyone has for the defacto segregation that happens in our community.” ccP has also served as a pilot model for the rest of Santa Barbara county, said robertson, who now works for the county overseeing family resource networks. “carpinteria is a Petri dish… isolated enough from Santa Barbara proper to look at population results, but close enough to access resources. And the demographics of carpinteria really match the county, so we can see population impact. We have learned so much about what is essential— the ability to bring families together in one space, it’s made a huge difference for schools and definitely the community.”

Modelled after ccP, there have been similar place-based collaborative family resource/early education hubs created in Guadalupe, isla Vista, Santa Maria and West Side Santa Barbara, but “carpinteria is really the shining star,” said robertson.

The West Side collaborative has been transitioned to a non-site-specific model.

Planning Commission approves first-ever faux tree cellular tower

At the May 6 meeting, the city of Carpinteria Planning Commission unanimously approved installation of a 50-foottall AT&T cellular tower, concealed by a mono-eucalyptus faux tree, in the Carpinteria Industrial Research Park zone.

According to City Planner Lucy Graham, this will be Carpinteria’s first faux tree cellular tower.

AT&T received preliminary approval from the Architectural Review Board on April 25 for a 50-foot high faux tree cell tower. Prior to approval, the ARB had rejected, on the basis of aesthetics, AT&T’s proposals for a 30-foot high and 45-foot high cell tower with parapets to the roofline to conceal panels. Commissioner Glenn La Fevers commented that the faux tree tower is “a better aesthetic

than a parapet to raise the roofline” and noted that “locating the faux tree adjacent to existing trees is a great way to avoid having the faux tree stand out.”

According to AT&T spokesperson Melissa Keith, the location of the cell tower was chosen “to address areas with poor coverage and dropped calls.” La Fevers added that there is a “community benefit to getting good cell coverage.”

In discussion, commissioners considered the environmental impact of the proposal which includes the removal of a real eucalyptus tree at the site. According to Commissioner John Callender, “the actual eucalyptus is a mature tree with habitat value.” Callender also questioned whether “the aesthetics outweighs this habitat value degradation.” Graham noted that the ARB will require AT&T to replace the tree and conduct a bird nest-

ing survey prior to removal (if in nesting season).

The commissioners also noted concern with the color fastness of the faux tree but Graham responded that the ARB is requiring AT&T to provide design specifications of the actual faux tree prior to its final approval, and that ARB approval will be subject to five-year reviews at which time the faux tree will be inspected for color and structural integrity.

Community Development Director Steve Goggia responded that his department is looking into “increasing the maximum length of CUP/CDP permits at the next zoning code update to allow for more time when it’s complicated to secure all the permits and finances once the project gets approved.”

Obituary

Lois Reimers 8/23/1924 – 4/28/2019

On April 28, 2019, Lois Nellie Tolliver Reimers, with family by her side, went peacefully to Heaven.

Born in Los Angeles, California on August 23, 1924 to Jerry and Ethyl Tolliver, Lois lived her entire life in California (Hollywood, Carpinteria, Thousand Oaks and Ventura) except for a year during the time when she proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII. After the war, Lois married Jack Reimers, the brother of her best friend Ruthe, and had four sons during their 62-year marriage. Lois and Jack were devoted to each other and their sons, grandchildren and extended family. Lois also worked with Jack in several business enterprises over the years including time at Santa Claus Lane, Herald Examiner delivery and Triple L Bar Supplies.

Lois was an amazingly creative person, writing and publishing two books, “Our Child’s Roots” and “Hattie – She Was Wired Differently,” painting many subjects including trees, American Indians, birds, among others. She also dove extensively into genealogy and wrote poetry. Lois was the matriarch of the family for many years—the connection in her family and extended family to the greatest generation. She was the true example of love in every relationship. Her eyes were always on others rather than herself. She was patient, kind, generous, humble, courteous, unselfish, good tempered, sincere and rejoiced in truth. She always had a great smile! In spite of life’s disappointments, particularly the loss of sons Cliff and Jim and beloved husband Jack, she had an ever-optimistic spirit, writing at one time, “Every exit is an entry somewhere else.” She encouraged all to “Have the courage to compromise, to settle a dispute by the partial surrender by each side.”

Lois is survived by son Jack and wife Eileen, son Tom and wife Chelsea, 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren! She was also very close with and touched the lives of her nieces and nephew who frequently visited from Arizona, Northern California, Oregon and Washington.

There will be a memorial service at Carpinteria Cemetery on Saturday, May 18, at 1 p.m. with military honor guard.

A reception will follow at Poinsettia Pavilion in Ventura from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Union rep is fighting for employee rights

Regarding Alex Pulido’s letter in last week’s paper, “Our school employees need a positive union rep” (CVN, Vol. 25, No. 32), it’s unfortunate that he couldn’t understand the “gibberish” school labor union leader Jay Hotchner used to address the school board at their last meeting. One must avidly watch school board meetings and be privy to a lot of “closed session” conversations to truly grasp the depth of what he was saying. But you can rest assured, the board knew exactly what he was talking about.

What is actually costing the district a grotesque amount of money is their blunders, missteps, incompetence, back-door dealing and general lack of reverence for protocol. They are spending thousands on their lawyers to cover up and “fix” their myriad mistakes. If they simply played by the rules and respected the contract, they would find that not only would Mr. Hotchner have much less work to do, but so would they.

Mr. Hotchner does not have “negative actions.” Instead, he has responses to the district’s poor decisions. Fortunately, he is the most hard-working union president who is tirelessly working for the good of our members, making sure that our contracts are followed, our evaluations are fair and our interests are protected. Mr. Hotchner, above all others, is constantly looking for constructive ways to solve problems and he fights for our rights.

What Mr. Pulido saw at that meeting, was a person fed up and sick and tired of the district’s and the board’s bad behavior and he is not alone in his frustrations.

As Mr. Pulido suggested, our students do need good role models and do need to be actively engaged in civic conversations. To that end, our kids need to see the truth of what is going on. Kids need to see that they have a school board that didn’t listen to one single thing that people said and did what they wanted to do in the end, regardless.

Treat mobile home residents fairly

Next Monday, May 13, our City Council will have on its agenda several recommendations made by the Mobile Home Rent Stabilization Control board for changes to the local Mobile Home Park Rent Control Ordinance. The intent of this 40-year old law is to protect lowincome families and seniors residing in our mobile home parks from predatory rent increases and to preserve our shrinking affordable housing. It worked well in the beginning. Indeed, several families are still benefiting from this regulation.

But the ordinance has become nothing more than a nuisance to unscrupulous park owners. Soon after its implementation, park owners found ways to circumvent the ordinance and increase rents. Many units have lost rent control protection and are now paying twice the maximum rent allowed by the regulation.

One consequence is that in one park over 60 percent of the spaces have lost rent control protection forever. Another is that this ineffectual ordinance is being held in total contempt by owners and managers because they know they can easily overwhelm any disgruntled resident.

Owners are in a class with Trump when it comes to disclosing their financial records. All mobile home residents should attend this very important meeting. Cannabis is going to put my farm out of business

That is what my Pest Control Advisor (PCA) told me. I grow 13 acres of avocados in Carpinteria. Our farm is our primary source of income. For the past 15 years, a local ag company has been spraying our avocados for Persea mites and avocado thrips. Persea mites cause defoliation and low yields; avocado thrips cause scars that cut the wholesale price by half.

But this year, they won’t spray most organic or any conventional pesticides, because of fear of law suits from marijuana growers. They are one of only three licensed-insured appliers that serve Carpinteria. The second also will no longer spray in Carpinteria for the same reason. The third is checking with their lawyers. My PCA told me if a fly or a bit of dust with a speck of pesticide enters a greenhouse, cannabis growers are threatening to sue for the entire value of the crop. Carpinteria greenhouses have large roof vents that are open much of the day.

Insects and dust particles can easily get in.

I contacted Supervisor Williams for help, and he had the addresses of cannabis growers near my farm sent to me so I could coordinate with these growers. But there is nothing to coordinate if there isn’t a licensed and insured applier willing to do the spraying.

All three appliers offered to spray Veritran (Sabadilla), a botanical insecticide, which is minimally effective on Persea mites and not at all effective on thrips.

So, marijuana growers will make millions and I will lose half the value of my crop. Doesn’t seem fair to me. I am not anti-cannabis. I voted for Prop 64 but I did not vote for this. I did not vote to be put out of business.

Labor union sends “cease and desist” letter to school district

In a letter directed to Carpinteria Unified School District Superintendent Diana Rigby, dated May 2, Jay Hotchner, president of Carpinteria Association of United School Employees, states that the union is “demanding the CUSD cease and desist from blocking information and inquiries (associated with healthcare) from our Burnham healthcare representatives,” placing limitations on the union’s “ability to directly gather information related to healthcare.” The letter states that direct access is “crucial” for the union “when bargaining over healthcare.”

CUSD’s director of human resources, Diana Zapata, responded to Hotchner in writing on May 8. In a statement to CVN, Zapata said, “We are devoted to working with our employee groups to

provide the best health care options possible. This is why the district benefits committee exists and the committee has the ability to obtain information from the district’s healthcare broker.

However, the district’s healthcare representative has informed us that certain information was being misrepresented and/or mischaracterized. Accordingly, adjustments were made to ensure that the process is able to provide full and accurate information to the committee, as a whole, in an accurate and consistent manner. This will ensure that the same information is provided to the committee without editing and filtering. The district remains committed to collaborative problem solving as well as providing timely and transparent information to all our employees.”

Sunday, April 28

6 p.m. / Public Intoxication / 7200 block Gobernador Canyon Rd.

A passerby called 911 to report a man drinking from a bottle with his pants around his ankles walking towards Highway 150 on Gobernador Canyon Road.

Deputies contacted the man and observed that he was soaking wet. The man stated he was lost and had been lying in a nearby creek. He also said he was trying to walk to the next town and was transient. The man had an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person and admitted he used meth in the previous days.

Due to his erratic behavior and objective symptoms of intoxication, the man was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail pending his sobriety.

10:20 p.m. / Suspicious Circumstances / 1400 block Cravens Lane

A person called 911 to report two to four trespassers on a nursery property.

The caller was not on scene but watching remotely from security cameras on the property. Deputies responded to the scene and it was discovered that the nursery has three-acres of marijuana green houses. It initially appeared to be a possible burglary in progress, so a perimeter was established and a K9 was requested to the scene. The trespassers were not located.

A caller reported a concrete skateboard ramp had been built on a storm drain culvert that is on home owners’ association property.

A man was contacted at the library with an open bottle of beer. He was cited and the beer was poured out.

1:03 p.m. / Warrant Arrest / Cameo Road

A 65-year-old Carpinteria resident was arrested for his $10,000 warrant and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail without incident.

1:54 p.m. / Suspended License / Poplar Street and Via Real A 75-year-

old Carpinteria resident was seen driving his car after being told the day before not to drive because his license was suspended. The man was cited, and his vehicle was towed. A deputy drove the man to his house after he was cited.

3:49 a.m. / Suspicious Circumstances / 650 block Linden Avenue

Deputies were dispatched to a warehouse on a report of an alarm. Deputies arrived on scene and checked the area on foot. They heard some noises in the neighboring construction yard that sounded like someone possibly jumping the fence.

Deputies, including a K9, checked the area but no signs of forced entry were located. Two employees arrived and opened the warehouse and confirmed that nothing appeared stolen.

Wednesday, May 1

2:12 p.m. / Found Property / 4100 block Via Real

A caller found a black bag on April 30 at approximately 7:30 a.m. on the bike path between La Conchita and Rincon Point. The bag appeared to be a case for a small guitar or other instrument. Inside the bag were guitar strings and miscellaneous paperwork, including court paperwork and a train pass for Amtrak.

The paperwork has a name, but deputies were unable to find a contact number, so it was booked in property for safekeeping.

Friday, May 3

5:39 p.m. / Injury Collision / 1100 block Casitas Pass Road

Deputies responded to a vehicle vs. pedestrian traffic collision in front of a restaurant. The juvenile pedestrian was walking within the crosswalk when he was struck by a vehicle. The juvenile suffered minor injuries and was transported to the hospital by his parents. Drugs and alcohol were not a factor.

8:41 p.m. / Traffic Stop and Public Intoxication / Ogan Road and Pacific Village Drive

A deputy made a traffic stop of a vehicle with no plates. As he walked up to the driver, the deputy saw two women in the backseat attempting to hide red solo cups. The deputy believed the cups were being used to drink alcohol and ordered the women to produce the cups.

One of the women poured the contents on the floorboard. The vehicle was an Uber. The deputy began issuing one of the women a citation for having an open container in the vehicle. Both women became extremely uncooperative and belligerent, with one of them filming the encounter with her cellphone. The woman being cited refused to sign the ticket and used extremely foul language.

When she was asked to sign the ticket, the woman said, “What if I just sign f--you!” The second woman was borderline interfering or delaying the investigation.

The other woman finally signed the ticket and when they were being released, they became belligerent with the Uber driver who asked for help from the deputies in getting the women out of the car. The two were arrested for public intoxication and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Avocado orchards and cannabis greenhouses are uneasy neighbors in the Carpinteria Valley.

Can avocado and marijuana growers peacefully coexist?

The unintended consequences of cannabis

scott Van der Kar, an avocado grower in the Carpinteria foothills, thought he was immune to the cannabis controversy that has roiled neighborhoods closer to town.

Van der Kar’s 50 acres on shepard Mesa road, where he also has lemons and cherimoyas, have been unaffected by the skunk-like stench from cannabis greenhouses and the semi-trailer truck traffic that has triggered a barrage of opposition in the valley below. even as the Carpinteria Valley became a mecca for commercial cannabis cultivation, the 70-year-old avocado industry was conducting business as usual … until now. “the cannabis industry has forced significant impacts on the community and expected the community to adjust,” Van der Kar said. “once it starts reaching into the orchard business, all of a sudden it gets personal.” last month, he said, avocado growers were “broadsided” by the news that the oxnard-based pest control companies that treat their crops would no longer spray the insecticides that work best on avocados, for fear of contaminating cannabis crops with the slightest trace of residue and getting sued. “this has come to the forefront so quickly that people are turning every which way to try to figure out what to do,” Van der Kar said. “We’re reeling from it.” the growers’ quandary has sent county officials scrambling to find a solution, and there’s not a moment to lose. spraying takes only a couple of hours or a couple of days, but the window for next year’s crop is now through June, to prevent the trees from defoliating and the avocados from turning brown, like russet potatoes. “i understand why they’re so freaked out,” said county supervisor das Williams, who represents the Carpinteria Valley. “normally, i support the strongest regulation against pesticides, but the state regulations for cannabis are ridiculous and impractical. even the organic insecticides are not allowed.” this week, at Williams’ urging, the board of directors of the Cannabis association for responsible producers, or Carp Growers, representing 20 out of 27 legal commercial cannabis operations in the valley, announced that its members would sign an agreement not to sue the avocado growers or the pest control companies during two weeks this spring while the orchards are sprayed. the dates are still to be determined. only organic pesticides would be covered; the most common one is made from a naturally-

said. even organic sprays typically have to be applied more than once to kill successive generations of insects, he said. having weathered droughts, heat waves and fire—he lost 40 acres of avocados in Ventura County during the thomas Fire of 2017—Van der Kar said cannabis is “one more thing that seems to be out of our control.” “sure, the cannabis growers want us to be their friends, but what’s in it for us?” he asked. “We’re altering how we do our businesses and adding to our costs so that they can grow this crop which does not fall under my definition as true agriculture. We’re growing food and they’re growing a drug.”

“We’re open and willing to setting aside a period of time for agreed-on applications of pesticides on avocado trees,” said Graham Farrar, Carp Growers president. “We’re hoping and trying to make the adjustments we can to work cooperatively.”

Farrar, who owns Glass house Farms, a medium-sized greenhouse operation for cannabis on Casitas pass road, said he was hopeful that an agreement could be signed this month. as part of the deal, the county agricultural Commissioner’s office would provide monitors to help ensure there is no pesticide “drift” beyond orchard boundaries. “emotions are high about this, but we may have a solution,” Williams said. “the future of avocados in the Carpinteria Valley is very important. We need multiple crops, not one.”

“Out of our control” Van der Kar, one of the few Carpinteria farmers earning 100 percent of his income from farming, said the agreement would help him with his organic avocados, but not his conventional, or non-organic, avocados and lemons. they require a pesticide that the proposed agreement wouldn’t cover. the alternative, Van der Kar said, is to use a pesticide that is less effective, requires multiple applications and costs more money—or not spray at all and risk spoiling those crops. “it’s certainly better than what we were thinking we were faced with,” he said of the proposed agreement. “it’s a short-term solution for some growers.” it will be difficult to set a time for spraying that suits all growers because every orchard is different, and so are fog conditions in the spring, Van der Kar

there are 2,200 acres of avocado orchards in the Carpinteria Valley. the county is limiting cannabis cultivation and processing business licenses to 186 acres. To date, county officials said, 36 cannabis growers have applied for landuse permits on 228 acres in the valley, so not all permit applicants will receive a business license. Farming on all sides has to evolve.”

California voters legalized marijuana in 2016. in the Carpinteria Valley, cannabis has now replaced about half of the flower greenhouse industry, and, according to Farrar, it is “the most regulated crop in the history of agriculture.” Members of CARP Growers use beneficial insects on their crops, and zero pesticides, he said. the state regulations for cannabis are so strict that last year, when a cannabis operator on Casitas pass road sprayed for ants in his office, he had to destroy his entire crop because the ants carried the spray into his greenhouse. of course, illegal cannabis greenhouses are unregulated. since october, the county has shut down 30 illegal operations, five of them in the Carpinteria Valley. Having grown up in Ojai and going through the public schools there, Briggs said that his family didn’t put a big emphasis on education, but after about five years of differing jobs and vocations after high school—“ski bum,” commercial fisherman, car salesman and martial arts among them—he went to Ventura College then transferred to UCSB where he majored in environmental studies and philosophy. Intending to pursue a career in environmental law, a two weeks teaching engagement changed his trajectory.

At 48 years old, Briggs brings more than 20 years of teaching experience to his job at Carpinteria Middle School— Thursday, September 7, 2017  3 those years in the more economically and socially challenged areas of south Ventura County. “I’m interested in kids with emotional, behavioral and academic challenges,” Briggs said. Coming to Carpinteria Middle School, Briggs said that he was not interested in seeing his future staffs’ teaching records, preferring instead to start his job with high expectations of both teachers and students. “If you have low expectations of someone,” Briggs explained, “they’re going to meet those, too.”

First “Artwalk on the Boardwalk” brings hundreds to State Beach

artists from Los angeles to Solvang lined the pathways of Carpinteria State Beach for the first-ever “Artwalk on the Boardwalk” held on Saturday, May 4. About 500 people visited the pop-up shops comprising a colorful row of tents and an enticing selection of arts and crafts, from stunning canvases to handcrafted jewelry, pottery and Native American-inspired instruments. In total there were 33 artist booths, 20 of the artists joined after a call was sent out from the Carpinteria Arts Center, 10 were invited from Santa Barbara’s famous weekly Arts & Crafts Show on Cabrillo Avenue, and a handful found the opportunity by word of mouth.

The artwalk is the brain child of Leanne Roth, the park interpretive specialist who organized the event. “We’re starting to make plans to do another one,” said Roth, who is now busy gathering input from the participants to determine the frequency of the event. The immediate response was very good, said Roth, noting that all vendors

made money. It will be several months though given that parking will be an issue throughout the busy summer in the campgrounds.

“As soon as I heard that they were building a boardwalk, my brain went ‘artwalk on the boardwalk!’ said Roth, who first conceived the idea three years ago as an inexpensive place for artists to sell their work. She partnered with the Carpinteria Arts Center to reach their wide network of local artists and art lovers.

From the beginning, it has also been important to Roth to get the word out that the State Beach’s boardwalk is ADA-accessible, and she made sure to advertise wheel chair accessibility in her PSAs for the artwalk. At the event, Roth had beach wheel chairs available for people to use to get down to and travel on the sand.

“There was an artist who had a beautiful set up by the beach,” said Roth, “and another artist saw it and loved it, so he went back to his booth and painted it. It was framed and ready by the end of the day. The air about it, the artwalk and the day, was just wonderful.”

Club and foundation members took a tour of the state of the art facilities in new Gen7 buildings at Carpinteria High School.

The Carpinteria High School baseball team beat A.B. Miller, 4-3 with a walkoff win in the bottom of the seventh at a home game on May 7. Behind senior lefty Chase Mayer, Carpinteria earned the victory in round two of the Division Six CIF baseball playoffs. With the game deadlocked at 3-3, Andy Johnson led off the seventh with a single to the right.

Mayer sacrificed him to second base and Miles Souza delivered an infield hit that allowed Johnson to come home all the way from second base as the play was late at first base. Not only did Johnson score the winning run, he also played the trumpet in his uniform with the Warrior Band as they performed the National Anthem before the game. After giving up a pair of runs to the visiting Rebels in the third, the Warriors counterpunched with three runs in the fourth—Souza leading off with a double. Jacob Macias reached on a fielder’s choice before Tyler Cervantes drove them both home with a shot to left.

The Deardorff Brothers, Jack and William, shine in three sports at Cate

At small schools such as Cate, studentathletes are often called on to participate in a variety of sports. “Since I’ve been involved with Cate, either as a student or faculty, there’s always been siblings who have done well athletically,” said Cate School Sports Information Director Dave Soto. Now, Jack (’19) and William (’21) Deardorff, also look to be part of a long line of siblings who excel in sports on the mesa.

The dynamic senior-sophomore duo has participated in football, soccer and baseball. “From day one, one or both of them have made an impact on our programs,” said Soto. “My favorite sport growing up was always baseball, but I never had the chance to play football,” said the senior whose been the Rams quarterback the past three years. “Now having played both, it would be hard to pick between the two of them,” he

explained.

The past two years, William has also been a big part of the football team’s offense, particularly this season, when the Cate coaching staff moved him around, creating both a dangerous weapon on the ground and in the air. “I love to do both (running and receiving the ball), but I really love running the ball,” said the sophomore. “Last season, I ran the ball a lot more than I caught the ball, so I feel a

little more comfortable running the ball than in the passing game,” explained William. The Rams ended the season 10-1, scoring more than 50 points every game, except in a playoff loss to Windward which took place on two different days and venues due to a fire in the region. The

May 1 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team beat Burroughs of Burbank in a first round CIF match, 12-6. “In singles, Myles Morgan looked great, winning both his matches, but playing with a lot of patience and waiting for his time to be aggressive,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Carlos Costilla went 2-1 and Austin Stone was a perfect 3-0. In Doubles, Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson/Kirby Zapata and Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson/Cameron Gralewski each went 2-0. “Esteban Zapata/Ian McCurry went 1-2, but lost two tough, close sets,” explained Bryant.

Carpinteria is now 20-4.

May 3 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team in a second round CIF playoff match, beat Bolsa Grande, 10-8. “This is the same team with virtually the same lineup that easily knocked us out of the quarterfinals last season, but today we had so many incredible performances and it all culminated with Carlos Costilla beating the Matadors Number-three player in a tiebreak 7-6 (5) in the last match of the day,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Austin Stone finished the day, 2-1; Myles Morgan and Carlos Costilla went 1-2 each. In doubles, Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson/Kirby Zapata went 3-0, winning by a two-game margin in each set. So, we will be in a major rebuilding mode in so many ways,” explained Bryant. Carpinteria finishes the season 21-5 overall and league champions in the Citrus Coast League at 9-0.

May 2 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team captured their first team victory in the last Citrus Coast League golf tourney of the season, shooting collectively a 439. Jose Gonzalez, a junior, led the Warriors tallying an 82, good enough to tie for third place with Carlos Torres of Santa Paula. Benny Shurmer (Nordhoff) was first, shooting a 78 and Mikal Elanes (Hueneme) second with an 80. “Carpinteria’s Tristan Kelly (sophomore) shot a career best 84. Jacob Mata (junior) used his crushing drives for an 89,” said Warriors coach Chris Cochrane. Diego Mendez (sophomore) and Caleb Nangle (junior) both shot 92s and helped secure the team victory. Fillmore was second, at 445; Santa Paula third, at 451. Santa Paula won the league title followed by Fillmore, Malibu, Carpinteria, Nordhoff and Hueneme. Gonzalez was voted second team All-CIF and came in ninth overall. Ryan Gonzalez of Fillmore was Number-one and MVP of the league.

Baseball

May 3 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team visited Oxnard, home of the Santa Clara Saints, and came away with a 4-1 win in Round One of the CIF-SS Division VI playoff tournament. The Warriors scored two in the top of the first after Noah Nuño’s bunt single and Jacob Macias’ ground ball through the left side of the infield. Tyler Cervantes lined to right, driving in Nuño before Diego Hernandez followed with a single to right to knock in Macias. The Warriors waited until the fourth inning to score again as Nuño opened the frame with a double and Miles Souza followed with a single. Carpinteria scored a fourth run that same inning and Chase Mayer struck out nine in the game to help secure the win. “We absolutely relied on every player to contribute, some played great on both sides of the ball. Others played great on defense or found a way to firm up the offense,” said Warriors coach Pat Cooney whose Warriors improved to 13-7 on the season, while Santa Clara dropped to 13-9.

Rams’ potent offense helped Jack to win the Eight-man Division One Offensive Player of the Year Award, and William earned Honorable Mention status on the All-CIF team.

In soccer, the brothers helped lead Cate back to the playoffs. The Rams, who won back-to-back CIF titles in 2011 and 2012, had failed to make the postseason for the past two seasons. Although they were beaten in the first round by Marshall of Pasadena this season, Cate looks to be strong next year with the return of offensive phenoms Buba Fofanah, Theo Mack and Dylan Vincent. “Scoring a goal in soccer is the best feeling in sports,” explained William.

For the second year in a row, the baseball team has advanced into the second

round of the CIF playoffs. Lead by a powerful hitting attack, the Rams also displayed some stellar defense when the elder Deardorff recently threw a no-hitter.

Unfortunately, the season came to an end in a nine-inning loss to the Number-one seed United Christian Academy, 5-4 on May 7.

“Athletic young men like the Deardorffs do not come around often,” said Cate Head Baseball and Football Coach Ben Soto. “Jack has won just about every athletic award there is to win (but) above his athletic achievements, he is just as outstanding off the field as he was on,” Soto added. Ram coaching staff and fans can take some satisfaction that they will still have William around for the next two years.

May 4 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team qualified in four events for the CIF Finals from the CIF Division Four Prelims held Saturday, May 4, at Valley Memorial Stadium. In the Boys 400-Meters, Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson finished seventh with a time of 50.97 seconds. Victor Rinaldi took eighth with a time of 51.62. Nahooikaika-Anderson was second in his heat, achieving a Personal Record (PR) by 0.8 seconds and Rinaldi was third in his heat. In the Boys 1600, Ytxzae Enriquez placed 12th with a time of 4:32.92 minutes. Enriquez lowered his PR by five seconds to qualify for the finals. In the Boys Four x 400, Carpinteria took eight with a time of 3:33.52. The team consisted of Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson, Mateo Handall, Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson and Victor Rinaldi. The times helped earn Victor and Solomon two events at the finals. In the Boys Shot Put, Isaac De Alba finished ninth, qualifying for his first Finals in the last qualifying position with a toss of 44 feet, five and a-half inches. The best finish on the girls side was turned in by Lucy Light with a PR of 16.77 in the 100-meter hurdles. She finished in a tie for 10th and will be the first alternate for the finals. The finals will be held this Saturday, May 11, at El Camino College in Torrance.

Cate School Boys volleyball

April 30 – The Cate School boys volleyball team lost to La Serna in four games, 3-1 in the second round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs. Junior Theo Mack had two service aces with a .450 hitting percentage. Mack also knocked down 27 kills, had four blocks and five digs. Senior Cullen Barber registered three service aces, 10 kills, three blocks and five digs. Sophomore Albert Barber dished out 38 assists to go along with a kill and four digs. “La Serna was a skilled and experienced team, and it was a great match that basically came down to who made the least errors,” said Rams coach K.C. Collins. Trailing 10 to one in game four, the Rams got to within 24-21 before eventually losing the set, 25-21, along with the match.

Ghosts of Malibu

Light rain fell in intermittent showers across south LA as I motored north late in the evening on Cinco de Mayo.

I’d spent the afternoon with my cousin and his wife and two kids in their Aliso Viejo, Orange County in their tract-house paradise, overlooking other tract houses and Laguna Canyon in the distance.

Like so much of Southern California, the place would truly have been paradise not so long ago, historically speaking.

Nearby, the bluffs of Dana Point tower above the Pacific where Whitey Harrison and Peanuts Larson rode their planks on thundering south swells and rowed skiffs and fished the reefs between surfs in the 1930s. An enormous breakwater now protects the harbor with mostly unused boats tied off and restaurants serving over-priced fish shipped in from the far corners of the planet.

I’d spent the weekend at the Board-

room Show in Del Mar, San Diego—a surfboard expo where shapers gather each year hoping to sell each other surfboards. It’s a great event though, a deep brain trust of surfing knowledge coming together, tightening the weave of our community. This year, the event was held in honor of the great Australian surfer/shaper Wayne Lynch (still surfing, still shaping, since the early 60s), who more than any other professional embodied a naturalists’ engagement with the remote regions he surfed, bringing a sense of stewardship and personal responsibility to the act of wave riding.

Now, with a Norwegian company, Equinor, lobbying the Australian government to set up oil rigs in the Great Australian Bight, Wayne Lynch’s style of regional caretaking is more crucial than ever.

But the Aussie surfers are rallying to protect their wild coast at the bottom of the continent—a place where the desert drops into a sparkling sea, and ferocious storms tear up from the Antarctic, and where the effects of an oil spill would be catastrophic and irreversible. It’s high time us Earthlings ease up on burning fuel, even if that means driving and flying less.

Of course, my participation in the Boardroom Show involved a proud display of the petrochemical products of foam and fiberglass that bring such surfing joy (not to mention the tank-anda-half of gas I burned getting there and back). But I think the issue of resource use is as much about the amount that individuals consume, as it is about the overall systems that societies rely on for transportation, manufacturing and agriculture. In other words, the world is organized by governments, underpinned by militaries, on a fossil-fuel mode of doing business. And until that model changes, the science is irrefutable: we

need to find new ways of moving, making and cultivating (and restoring and protecting the last undeveloped places), or life as we have known it for so many thousands of years is going to radically change.

So, these were my somewhat dark ruminations as I drove through the night towards home and my loving family. The rain spattered down and would clear again and the air felt tropical. I wanted to stand on the coast then, breathe in that wet night air on the edge of the Pacific, and I pictured the stretch to the north of Malibu all rocks and mountains and old California. I’d just missed Interstate 10 that would have whisked me off to Santa Monica in minutes, but I took the next exit needing a bathroom break anyway and made my way down Santa Monica Boulevard. Most places were closed but

Two younger guys were standing on the beach, blankets draped over their shoulders, and the bubbling whitewash of the surf moving across in that incomparable (except for Rincon, of course) point line was so inviting. The guys walked past me. “We gonna hit it, fellas?” I asked, with Gidget-infused enthusiasm. “Nah,” one of them replied as they wandered back to their van, “we’ll wait till morning.” Not me, not me at all. And it always feels like I’m getting away with something—and there’s a touch of being on a clandestine mission to it too—when I get an unexpected opportunity to surf. Particularly at midnight, at Malibu, with no one out.

I wriggled into my suit and waxed up the

I passed a 50s-style diner and decided to stop for a cup of coffee. I used my travel mug because I am saving the planet and sidled-up to the counter. The nice waitress filled me up, and the place felt so good— a couple of old-timers jawing in a booth behind me, the stainless-steel malt cups and clean counters, the patty melts and fries coming off the line—that I decided to stay and order a slice of apple pie.

“You want whipped cream on that?” the waitress asked.

With pie and coffee for sustenance, I continued on, finding the on-ramp for the I-10 a few blocks away then winding through the Santa Monica tunnel and out to PCH. Lots of RVs and camper vans were parked along the point where Sunset Boulevard meets the coast, and I imagined living that way—the vulnerability, the inconvenience, the boredom—and felt deep gratitude for the farm house we rent, for my kids getting to go to our great schools at Canalino and the Children’s Project, for this still-living paradise of Carpinteria. Having surfed that morning with friends in Oceanside, I knew there was some early-season south swell in the water and I thought to check Malibu.

Virtually no one was on the road in this midnight hour, except for the chilling scene of a highway collision, sheriff’s lights flashing, the fire crew, crumpled vehicles mashed together and my slow-pass by the scene. Got to be careful out there.

Next thing, I’m at Malibu, parking the van under the glow of a streetlight and scurrying across the highway to check it. The iconic wall, with its opening to the beach and two capped

6’2” racing-striped Twinnie, locked up the van and hopped and skipped back across the highway.

Walking passed those pillars and down onto the sand and up to the lifeguard tower, then into the water and across the cobbled bottom before laying on my board and paddling out, I imagined the surfers that had come before me and made this place, and the sport of wave riding, what it is—Miki Dora, and before him Bob Simmons, Matt Kivlin and Joe Quigg. I thought of my dad too, who wasn’t in their league as a surfer, but who told me stories of coming down to Malibu after his shift lifeguarding at Zuma Beach and seeing the point lit up at six- to eight-foot on a hot and glassy August evening in the early 1950s, his buddies Buzzy Trent, Peter Cole and Mickey Muñoz (another trio of surfing greats) streaking across and making the end of the Malibu pier. Somehow, with no one at all in the water but myself and whatever creatures might be passing in the night, I felt them—those surfing greats, and this great surfing spot. A wave cracked at the top of the point, the dancing whitewater racing down the line in the darkness and I spun my board, paddled and caught it—taken up then shooting through the night with the lights of the pier silvering the water before me.

Girls lacrosse

May 2 – The Cate School baseball team hit the road for the first round of the CIF playoffs and returned to Carpinteria following a 16-0 win over Lennox Academy.

“Jack Deardorff, Class of ’19, was fantastic on the mound for Cate, going six innings while striking out eight and yielding just one hit,” said Rams assistant Dave Soto.

Senior Ethan Cassulo came in on relief to toss a scoreless seventh inning, striking out two and allowing one hit. Deardorff also had two extra base hits, a double and a triple to lead the offensive attack. Junior Dalton Phillips was two-for-three and sophomore William Deardorff went three-for-five. Junior Scott Holmes had two hits, including a double. Freshmen Charlie Schofield, Matty Holmes and Tyler Tom, had one hit each.

May 1 – The Cate School girls lacrosse team, the number-four seed in the CIF Division II playoffs took on number-five seed Birmingham Charter, coming away with a 15-11 victory at home. Liza Borghesani made eight saves and Lily Riehl scored three goals, distributed three assists and took 10 draws as the Rams evened their record on the year to 7-7. Madison Erikson converted two goals and contributed four assists.

Piper Brooks tallied two goals and dealt two assists. Daphne McKeefry netted three goals and had one assist. “Seniors Daphne McKeefry, Maddie Erikson and Andreah Graf, who may have played their last home game, led the midfield with their transition connections and smart offensive play,” said Cate coach Rene Mack. “Hannah Biles also had her best game of the season and contributed two goals. Kenzie Davidson was critical on re-defends and offensive movement,” explained Mack. “Juniors Piper Brooks, Mia Foster and Maya Fenelon dominated the ground balls and interceptions,” added Mack whose Rams moved onto the semifinals of the tournament.

May 7 – The Cate School baseball team ended up on the wrong side of a playoff game on Tuesday, May 7th, as the Rams fell 5-4 in nine innings to the Number-one seed United Christian Academy. “As he has all year, Jack Deardorff, Class of ‘19 led the Rams on the mound,” said Cate assistant Dave Soto. The senior went eight innings and allowed one earned run while striking out five. He was relieved by senior Ethan Cassulo who allowed three runs on two hits. Cate’s two hits in the game came from junior Dalton Phillips and Cassulo. “The Rams got some great defensive plays from McCarthy Willett, Class of ‘19, and William Deardorff, Class of ‘21. “Ending a season is never easy and I’m so proud of this group,” said Soto. The Rams will say goodbye to seniors, Jake Nelson, Cal Sinclair, Willett, Cassulo and Jack Deardorff.

May 7 – The Cate School girls lacrosse team beat Peninsula 15-13 in the Semifinals of Division II at Peninsula. Liza Borghesani made eight saves, Piper Brooks contributed six goals and four assists, Lilly Riehl had four goals and Maddie Erickson registered three goals and two assists in the win. “Fortunately, Riley Borchardt, Maya Fenelon and Josie Erickson played smart and communicative defense, scooping the ground balls, reading and snatching interceptions, and creating key forced turnovers,” said Rams coach Rene Mack. “Seniors Daphne McKeefry, Maddie Erickson and Andreah Graf all played their best game this season,” added Mack. The Rams move on to the Division II Finals after beating the Number-one seeded Peninsula, this Friday, May 10 at 5 p.m. at a site to be determined. The Rams improve to 8-7 overall.

Carpinteria Valley MuseuM of History

Located near the corner of Linden and Carpinteria avenues, Carpinteria Realty opened its doors in 1917.

Homes for sale

George Gilbert McLean opened his Carpinteria Realty office in 1917 at 5030 Carpinteria Ave., most recently occupied by Rabobank. McLean’s office was like a “dollhouse” as described by Albertine Rodriguez in a 1968 article appearing in the Carpinteria Herald. rodriguez also mentioned that the large pumpkins in front of the building were given to McLean by local C.B. Franklin. McLean himself rose to local and national fame due to his skills with photography, not real estate. The Carpinteria Valley Museum of History archives contain a number of Mclean’s photos, and many of his works were used commercially to illustrate seed packages.

ORDINANCE 2019-01

AN ORDINANCE OF THE CARPINTERIA-SUMMERLAND FIRE PROTECTION

DISTRICT PERTAINING TO FEES AND SERVICE CHARGES

WHEREAS, Health and Safety Code Section 13916 provides that a Fire Protection District the may charge a fee to cover the reasonable cost of any service the District provides or reasonable cost of enforcing any regulation for which the fee is charged; and

WHEREAS, the Governing Board of the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District of has determined the fees to be paid to and collected by the District for the issuance

all permits and the performance of inspections and plan reviews and for other items specified herein; and

WHEREAS, the formula for determining the fees has been designed to reflect an equitable

means of fee assessment based on the reasonable cost of providing services.

These costs include:

1. All applicable direct costs including, but not limited to, salaries, wages, fringe benefits, services and supplies, operation expenses, contracted services, special supplies, and any other direct expense incurred;

2. All applicable indirect costs including, but not restricted to, building maintenance and

operations, equipment maintenance, communications, printing and reproduction, and

like District expenses; 3. Fixed assets recovery expenses consisting of depreciation of fixed assets, and additional charges, calculated on the current estimated cost of replacement, divided

by the approximate life expectancy of the fixed asset, together with further additional the charges to make up the depreciation not previously recovered and reserved in cash for

purpose of recovering such unrecovered depreciation over the remaining life of the asset; 4. General overhead, expressed as a percentage, distributing and charging the expenses

of the District officers and personnel.

NOW, THEREFORE, the Governing Board of the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District does ordain as follows:

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY This month I had the unexpected pleasure of being the interviewee instead of the interviewer for a blog post by Karen Dustman of Clairitage Press. Karen wanted me to share my experience of working with my father on his memoir, “A Sense of Humor,” recently published by Clairitage. I hope this excerpt encourages you all to get out your recorders.

How was it working together with your dad on his autobiography?

It was one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life. I loved the time we had together during the interview process, going through all the photographs and memorabilia (which he still doesn’t know how I found), showing him all the genealogy records about his ancestors, and, of course, sharing laughs about it all.

Did it change your relationship in some way?

It didn’t really change our relationship, but I think it deepened it in some ways. It broadened my perspective and respect for the man that he is outside

I discovered how his integrity, sense of humor, work ethic and self-esteem were ingrained in him, and how they remained a firm foundation throughout his life.

It brought full circle everything that he instilled in me and my siblings.

Did anything surprise you? Did you hear stories you’d never heard before?

I heard many stories I’d never heard before, especially ones about his parents, friends he grew up with, and other people that were instrumental in his life. What

I think surprised me the most was his memory; he could remember not just the events of his life, which were very detailed, but also exactly where we had left off at the previous interview, which had been months before. It was uncanny.

What was the best story you heard—the one you really want the world to know about?

That’s a tough question. My dad is a great narrator and had a lot of fascinating stories about his boyhood, his family, his restaurant days in downtown LA, and being a police officer with the LAPD.

But I think my favorite story was one he told with my mother. There were a few times when I set the voice recorder in the middle of the dinner table while we ate, and it captured some great conversations. The one that is dearest to me was when they were talking about an evening before they married. My mom worked in downtown LA and my dad was supposed to pick her up after work, and he forgot to do that because he was at home watching a ball game with his uncle. I won’t go into the whole story, but it was such a perfect example of how they spoke to each other, and it was so funny—and in the end, it was the night my dad proposed to my mom. I had never heard that story before, it was beautiful and so them.

Do you have any advice for others who’d like to get a family member’s story out?

The best advice I can give is to just do it. Don’t put it off. Don’t wait for some elusive “convenient time.” There won’t be one. You have to treat the project like you would an important job, especially the interview portion. Make appointments and put them on the calendar and get all those words recorded. I’ll be forever grateful that I was able to present my dad’s completed book to him, and that we can share it with our family and friends.

My whole life he’s been the king of my world, and now I can let everyone know why. That makes it a precious gift to me, as well as to him. So just do it—start the ball rolling today. I promise you will reap rewards you never expected. Just remember to listen like you’ve never heard the stories before and keep a sense of humor.

Pelicans, cormorants, herons and egrets are common visitors, and avid birders see many species. This week, visitors saw whales and many dolphins. Once the dolphins appeared to be chasing the whales.

A sea lion visited. Although usually sea lions are tolerated at a short distance by the harbor seals, on one occasion it scared about 75 seals away. The circle of life is apparent, as the occasional dead seal provides life to local turkey vultures and mating behavior is obvious in the surf zone.

Disturbances Visitors

Single disturbances were caused by standup paddlers, jet skis and trespassers who went to the foot of the pier.

Over 1,217 people were recorded in the overlook, including tourists from Australia, Germany, Russia, India, Canada, Switzerland, Japan, Sweden, the Philippines, the United Kingdom, New York, Texas, Wisconsin, Colorado, Arizona, Washington, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Montana, Maine, Massachusetts, Utah, Florida and Oregon.

The Carpinteria harbor seal rookery is located immediately east of Casitas Pier, between the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve and Carpinteria State Beach. Please remember not to bring dogs, bicycles or loud voices to view the seals. Harbor seals, when disturbed, may flee and become separated from their pups. This week, Carpinteria Sunset Rotary Club welcomed two of the owners of Carpinteria’s brewLAB to talk about one of the Rotary Club’s favorite subjects: great tasting beer. brewLAB owners Peter Goldammer and Cliff Gordon discussed going back to the roots of microbrewing, small batches of beer that are creative, innovative and offer a true taste experience. With up to 16 self-brewed beers on tap, there is always something for everyone’s personal taste or style. BrewLAB is directly involved in sourcing their ingredients. Using organic grains almost entirely and harvesting local herbs, flowers, fruits and vegetables, and supporting local beekeepers by using choice honey, brewLAB pays close attention to each beverage they make. Spent grains, hops and yeast are fed to local pigs or composted and the majority of the brewery’s waste water is re-used for landscape irrigation.

Playa Del Sur wins in Santa Barbara

Members of the Playa Del Sur 4-H livestock projects moved their animals into Earl Warren Showgrounds on April 23 for the 2019 Santa Barbara Fair and Expo.

Throughout their week-long stay, the group informed the public about their animal projects in the “Ask Me” booth. “I was happy that people said they learned lots of new things about animals from us,” Lupita Loyola said. When it came to competition in the show ring, the club members’ hard work and dedication paid off with multiple awards and ribbons.

In the Champion of Champions competition, a total points contest, Arroyo took first place for Beef and Gizelle Lopez was first for Sheep. All the members enjoyed spending the week together bonding with the public and each other, “I got to spend time with my group and got to know them better,” explained Neida Garcia, “it was a great experience for my first time.” The next show for the Playa Del Sur livestock group is May 18 in Santa Maria for Santa Barbara County 4-H Exhibit Day.
