Deputy Sheriff awarded Lifesaving award

Deputy Sheriff Steven Gonzales received the news that he was a recipient of the Sheriff’s Lifesaving award shortly after his daughter Kinleigh was born in January. It had been an eventful six months for Gonzales, who had weathered the fires on his regular beat in south county—Carpinteria, Summerland and Montecito—and the award cast light on a positive moment from the summer.

Gonzales had been selected for the award because of his quick response and decisive action that resulted in saving a life.

On July 22, Gonzales heard a “Code Blue” over the wire signaling that an individual had fallen off his bike near the Montecito YMCA on San Ysidro Road and was nonresponsive. Gonzales grabbed his Automated External Defibrillator and hurried to the scene. Upon arrival, Gonzales found a bystander already giving chest compressions to the cyclist who was turning blue. After cutting off the man’s shirt, Gonzales put the AED pads on his chest and waited for the machine to run its checklist. In short order, the AED

delivered at least one shock to the cyclist before the fire and paramedics arrived and continued the CPR. Gonzales’ initial CPR is credited with helping to ensure a full recovery for the cyclist.

Gonzales has been an officer since he was 21, but this was the first time he deployed an AED in an attempt to save someone’s life. “Training pays off. The AED, believe it or not, it works. It is a lifesaving device,” said Gonzales who also credited the sheriff department’s training in his ability to properly use the AED and attend to the individual in need.

In his 22 years of service he’s “seen a bit of everything, in this job. Unfortunately, you see a little too much,” remarked Gonzales who has witnessed homicides and officer-involved shootings, and was called to the mass shooting in Isla Vista, and to the fatal shooting at the Goleta Post Office.

For Gonzales, the lifesaving moment being celebrated is, “the better side. It’s bringing somebody back. I lost my grandfather in 2015, and when I think about this man, we brought a grandfather or a father back.”

Hydraulic dredges remove sediment from Salt Marsh

Santa Barbara County Flood Control continues its emergency response to the January debris flows with hydraulic dredging of the Carpinteria Salt Marsh Reserve. The dredging is an effort to relieve 20,000 cubic yards of sediment from the Salt Marsh deposited either naturally via the Franklin and Santa Monica Creeks during the heavy rains, or by truckload afterwards during the initial emergency response. The dredging began on March 19 and will continue through April 30 when the emergency permit expires. Schock Contracting Corporation was awarded the project through a competitive bid process, and the cost is set at an estimated $1.3 million. Funding will be drawn from the South Coast Flood Zone reserves and is expected to be reimbursed

by FEMA. It will be several years before Carpinteria Valley watersheds fully recover, according to Maureen Spencer, operations and environmental manager of the Santa Barbara County Flood Control District. At present, there is a strong potential for increased amounts of debris and sediment to go through the area’s system of channels. For that reason, the sediment must be quickly moved towards the ocean, where it would naturally flow anyway, but at a much slower pace, according to Spencer. “If we don’t de-silt the marsh then the marsh is going to fill in and will impact marsh habitat and nearby residences.”

“There is absolutely no indication that what we are putting out there is toxic,” Spencer said regarding toxicity near the dredge pipe’s mouth. “I think people get alarmed because of how it looks—it’s a dark slurry, but this is natural… because of the size of the storm and the risk of additional sediment coming down and causing a flood risk, we’re quickening this process.”

Flood Control did sediment tests every three days during the initial emergency response, as crews used cranes and trucks to clear Santa Monica and Franklin Creeks and dumped sediment at Ash Avenue. Samples were taken by spoon from trucks, then mixed to make a composite

hydraulic desilting, Flood Control dug five different pits along the length of the dredging footprint and took samples from each one of those pits, which were tested by regulatory agencies—the Army Core of Engineers, Regional water Quality Control Board, California Department of Fish and wildlife and the California Coastal Commission—and approved for ocean disposal.

it, ocean organisms eat it, and levels go down, it’s not a persistent level.” “No Swimming” signs have been posted near the discharge pipe. while dredging is fairly common, according to Ben Pitterle, watershed and marine program director of Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, when fecal levels are high it is important for beach goers to adhere to warnings. There are also a number of other environmental issues associated with dredging that Channelkeeper, a grassroots non-profit organization focused on watershed conservation, is monitoring closely and working with the County on, including the impact of dredging, which sucks up bottom animals like mussels and clams.

Additionally, the mud that was dumped had ammonia, which can be highly toxic to animals, pitterle said.

the real story of march for our lives

As an attendee of the Santa Barbara March for Our Lives, I think the letter on the subject in CVN, by someone who probably didn’t attend the event, deserves a serious reality check. First of all, let’s keep in mind the genesis of this movement and march: high school students witnessing their friends being gunned down and fearing for their own lives. If that’s not enough reason for an organic movement, and speaking out to stop further gun violence, I don’t know what is!

By no means can these students be disrespectfully dismissed as “political pawns.” The march I participated in sought to demand sensible laws to ban weapons of war and high-capacity magazines from civilian ownership, thorough background investigations and mental health checks for gun owners. The students and marchers never purported to reverse the Second Amendment. There were words of protest against President Trump because after taking advantage of a photo opportunity and public relations event with the students, and claiming to want to do something positive on gun control, he backed down after meeting with the NRA and facing their political pressure.

The attendees of the march in Santa Barbara came from all walks of life and ages, with half of them being youth acting on their own and speaking their minds on an issue that has become front and center to their safety. Many attendees were selfprofessed gun owners voicing their opinions for sensible laws. As for criticizing the movement and march being funded by organizations and individuals, I counter with the fact that pro-gun politicians and laws have been promoted to the tune of many millions of dollars by the NRA. Lastly, I am really tired of the cheap shot “fake news” accusation labeled on our free press.

Cars must share the road with bikes

I am writing in response to a pitchfork last week in which the author was offended by “entitled bike riders” who block traffic on the Santa Ynez bridge, presumably by not keeping to the far right.

I would like to point out to this driver, and others who might not be aware of the vehicle code, that cyclists are in fact legally entitled to use the traffic lane here, and elsewhere in places where “a lane is too narrow for a bicycle and a vehicle to travel safely side-by-side within the lane… With any slow-moving vehicle or bicycle, drivers should follow at a safe distance and, when it is safe, the bicyclist should move to a position that allows vehicles to pass,” according to the Department of Motor Vehicles.

There’s a misperception that people like me are fearful of being challenged and losing our position, title, clout. No. What I lose sleep about is who will step up? Who will fill my seat when my term ends and I just can’t do it anymore? Who will make difficult, controversial but necessary decisions that affect our community, friends and families? Who will be our next CUSD trustees? Before you write a complaint letter, request, opinion piece, would you please consider stepping up?

We need caring, committed, sane and logical community members. Our schools need you. Our children need you. Let’s talk civic engagement. Contact me, let’s talk about how you can serve our community as the next CUSD trustee.

The Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District proudly serves our community by protecting life, property and the environment through prevention, education and response with a professional and dedicated workforce. As your “First Responders,” we have evolved into your public service emergency agency.

Our job is to make you safer, and in order to serve you better, we need your help. We have an opportunity through the donation of land in the middle of our district, to create a third station thereby reducing our response times. This would significantly improve our ability to serve our community by reaching you faster when you call. We could have personnel in all sections of our district to ensure a rapid response no matter the circumstance or natural disaster. However, to build this station we need the help of our community. Our agency, working together from firefighter to Board of Directors, will put a bond measure on the ballot in November, asking you to help us build this new station, re-build the station in Summerland to meet current code and seismic requirements, and seismically

It’s unbelievable but true. Trump has caused me to do the unthinkable. Really.

As an addict, I cling unreasonably to my bad habits. But, I did it, I turned the television off. I didn’t even know it had an off button.

Peace reigned in my world. No one was calling me or each other crude names, unmercifully denouncing women, telling me I live in a bubble and have no knowledge of life, and generally ruining my

health. Simple as that.

I am not above telling someone what I think; but, I hope I never stoop to the level of our unduly elected leader. There is always a silver lining. I found books, philosophy, nature and chatting about flowers and birds. I made friends with our resident roadrunner, a couple of feral beasts, and I talked at length with some homeless folks. Who knew there was a world out there?

Now I do.

Bacteria levels at county beaches

Recently, CVN admonished readers to beware of high bacterial levels at several beaches. These warnings were based on bacterial tests in the ocean waters. It is critical to understand that these ocean water tests substantially understate the actual levels of harmful bacteria that are found in the nearshore environment.

The bacterial counts and thus survival of pathogens at the beach is considerably enhanced within the beach sands.

Thus, while water quality tests may be low, sand samples may show levels 100 times higher. As an example, The Los Angeles Times reported on Feb. 3, 2012, “Researchers also asked beach visitors if they dug in the sand and swam in the water. Two weeks later, they called participants to see if they had gotten sick and what their symptoms were. Experts have known for years that swimming in sewage-fouled water puts swimmers at risk for gastrointestinal illness.”

Viewpoint CEF continues tradition in giving scholarships to high school seniors

By Sally Green, roBin SawaSke and Sue HarriSon Carpinteria eduCation Foundation SCHolarSHip Committee The Carpinteria Education Foundation was established in 1993 by then Superintendent of Carpinteria Unified School District Dr. William Carty, and a group of business people from the community. The purpose was to raise funds for all the CUSD schools through the private sector. These funds would go toward the arts, science, literacy, equipment and programs that would enhance education for students in Carpinteria.

Approximately fifteen years ago, CEF determined that they would solicit money from the community. The monies would be given to graduating seniors from Carpinteria High School to support their college education. The first year, about $450 was given to qualified seniors. Over the years, service groups in town have contributed funds, as have many generous individuals, at our annual fundraising events. The Morning Rotary, the Noon Rotary, the Avocado Festival and flower growers have provided funding. This year we will be giving over $55,000 to CHS seniors.

Students provide an application which includes an essay about what has inspired them to further their education.

The applications are reviewed and students are scheduled for an interview. A group of CEF members and community members will interview 43 seniors over a three-day period at CHS this year. Volunteers find the process heartwarming, as the interviews provide a glimpse into the lives of the applicants. Many of the interviewers are moved to contribute additional monies, and to volunteer yearly. Everyone comments on how many students have been successful in academic, professional or personal endeavors, sometimes despite difficult situations. Carpinteria High School can be proud of the achievements of their graduating seniors.

Donations can still be made to the 2018 Scholarship Fund. The Carpinteria Education Foundation welcomes businesses, community members and friends to join in the celebration of our students’ accomplishments. On Friday morning, April 6, a hero went to join the Pantheon of heroes. There are lives well lived and then there are lives that are the stuff of novels. William “Bill” E. Waltrip’s life was the latter. Born August 17, 1919 in Springfield, Illinois, son of Mary Shrader Waltrip and William Henry Waltrip, he grew up in his family’s home towns of Mattoon and Tuscola.

Most of his youth was spent on his Grandfather Waltrip’s farm where he found his love of horses and the outdoors, which lasted his entire life. Working the horse teams alongside his beloved Grandfather was where he was happiest. He always described his childhood as perfect, and he would love to tell the experiences of life spent on the farm in a small Illinois town with his younger brother John Waltrip.

After completing high school, he attended Eastern Illinois University. The war was building in Europe and there were increasing problems with Japan.

The National Draft was coming, and Bill decided to join the service of his choice, the Marines, in June 1941. He had his recruit training and boot camp at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.

This was followed by his assignment to the 8th Marine Regiment.

With the outbreak of war with Japan in December, 1941, the 8th Regiment, as a part of the 2nd Marine Brigade, sailed for the South Pacific in January, 1942. After their arrival in Pago Pago, American Samoa, Bill volunteered for assignment to the 1st Marine Raider Battalion. This special battalion would be known as Edson’s Raiders. The First Marine Raiders proceeded to the French-controlled island of New Caledonia to establish a base camp prior to joining the 1st Marine Division on the Fiji Islands. Once attached, they were to take part in the first U.S. offensive of World War II. The objective of the offensive was to capture the Japanese-held airfield located on Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Island group.

Bill’s first fight was on the Japanese HQ island of Tulagi. Then he deployed to the main Island and the historically significant battle of Guadalcanal. This was where the Raiders objective was an assault against the Japanese-held territory and the recapture of the airfield. He fought in the infamous Battle of Bloody Ridge, a battle documented in the book by his dear Marine comrade, Marlin Groft.

From the Solomons, the Raiders went on to New Georgia, assisting an Army operation by preventing the enemy landing of troops and supplies and assisting the U.S. forces in a capture of a forward air base on Munda Point. Bill was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry against the enemy. While on reconnaissance, leading his squad forward they took a concealed enemy machine gun crew and captured the position. Bill went on to land on Iwo Jima on the 23rd of February, 1945 as part of the 3rd Div. 9th Reg. It was during the battle for the capture of the most strategic airfield of the Pacific Theater that he was wounded by machine gun fire and evacuated to Wake Island. For that ac-

tion he was awarded a purple heart. Bill never boasted of his gallantry, sharing only with friends interested in the history of the Marines, especially in more recent years, with his dear friend and neighbor, Tom Sullivan.

After the end of World War II, Bill went back to Illinois, but reenlisted after a year and returned to Camp Pendleton training and specializing in military security. His next assignment was China.

First, assigned in Tsingtao and then on to Shanghai with the Military Police. He resided at the American Embassy on the Bund, experiencing the final days of a city and country that was undergoing great changes. The Marines played an important part of the evacuation of the last foreigners of Shanghai and left on June 6, 1949, three days before the fall of China.

Bill went on to fight in the Korean War, landing at Inchon. The Marines were part of the invasion force of X Corp. Inchon was the successful amphibious plan of General Douglas McArthur to land “in force” behind the North Korean forces.

He fought all the way to Seoul before being re-deployed to Wonson, Korea on the East Coast. The Marines of the 3rd Div. 9th Reg. were tasked to proceed north to the Chosin Reservoir to provide relief of the encircled Marines and Army personnel in mid-winter of 1950. The relief column was ambushed by Chinese troops, his unit receiving heavy mortar fire. Bill was injured as he leapt from the transport which put him out of action. He earned his Bronze Star in a prior engagement in disabling two of three enemy tanks.

He liked to say the third tank was abandoned because the North Koreans were not aware he was out of bazooka rockets.

Not leaving the Marines, he served in many security capacities in American facilities throughout the world, Panama, London, Cairo, Daharan and Istanbul.

His lifelong love of literature and history came alive in these exotic locations. He travelled with Presidents Truman and Eisenhower, worked on the security for the Suez conference and many other projects. Bill met the people that were making history and who were characters out of the history books that he loved, such as Colonel Lawrence of Arabia, but it was in Istanbul that his life would change.

In Istanbul, Bill’s friends from the embassy wanted to introduce him to a beautiful woman from East Prussia, Traute Sobottka. He didn’t want any introductions and had no thoughts of marriage. Traute wasn’t interested in meeting the handsome American her friends kept talking about either. Finally, fate stepped in and as Traute walked down a flight of stairs Bill saw her and was smitten. Asking his friends who she was, they said that this was the girl they wanted him to meet. The course of their history changed. After a whirlwind courtship, with Bill jumping on military flights to go to where she was, London, Vienna, anywhere, even if for just an hour to see her, he sent two gentlemen, diamond company representatives, to her Amsterdam hotel, one carrying the ring and one a bouquet of tulips. She accepted the ring, and that was the beginning of an

amazing marriage that brought them to Santa Barbara in 1958 and ultimately, to Carpinteria in 1961.

In 1960, they bought land in the foothills with a sweeping view of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Bill always wanted room for a home and horses, he got both.

There was a mature avocado orchard and there they built their house together. In 1961, their daughter Kathleen was born and life was good.

Bill held the position of Marine Corps recruiter in Santa Barbara and retired from the Marines in 1963 to take on a new career with the U.S. Forest Service, serving in fire protection and later arson and crime investigation, starting just in time for the Coyote Fire. His was a dream job, patrolling the hills from Carpinteria to Santa Barbara by truck and horseback, getting to know every canyon, ranch and the people that lived there. Bill was able to ride his beloved horses Flash and Jube into the backcountry with his colleagues and friends. He always considered himself to be lucky in his second career.

This past December, he watched as the Thomas fire burned the mountains and hills around his beloved property. He and Traute evacuated after midnight not knowing if they would return. Fortunately the property was unscathed.

Retiring as Chief Law Enforcement Officer of the Los Padres National Forest in 1983 after 20 years, Bill began planning trips around the world. He loved train travel and took the Siberian express across Russia to Vladivostok, the Raj train across India and a long trip across Australia. His love of books and history kept him busy, continually reading and sharing his knowledge with his friends and always in weekly calls to his brother, until John passed away. Time was spent keeping regular contact with his dear Marine Corps friends and those he grew up with. Then there were the morning coffee meetings at the donut shop in Carpinteria, where all the men met and solved the world’s problems.

If I was to describe him to a stranger, it wouldn’t be easy. A friend once said he was “more John Wayne than John Wayne could ever be” but I would say that he had the diplomacy and talent for speaking of Ronald Reagan, the integrity of a Supreme Court Justice, drop-dead movie star looks, the most brilliant blue eyes, a rich baritone with the ability to make up songs on the spot, quietly generous to those in need, a brilliant mind and a sharp quick wit even until the end, but most of all, he was without bravado. He was a humble man who never bragged about his heroism and service. He was a proud Marine to the end, getting a final crew cut from his dear friend and barber, Jess Martinez. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched. Somewhere I’m sure he’s riding Flash alongside all the great heroes before him. Semper Fi. William is survived by his wife of 59 years, Traute, his daughter Kathleen and many close friends here and around the country. In lieu of flowers, donations in his honor can be made to the Carpinteria Historical Society. There will be a celebration of this amazing life at a later date.

DLI expansion proposal spurs controversy

Editor’s note: The author of this article is the mother of a kindergartner enrolled in the Dual Language Immersion program at Canalino School.

Though parent demand for Carpinteria Unified School District’s one-year-old Dual Language Immersion program has grown, the school board is reluctant to approve an expansion of the program that prepares students to be SpanishEnglish bilingual and biliterate. At the April 10 board meeting Canalino School Principal Jamie Persoon presented a recommendation to increase the number of DLI kindergarten classes at her school from two to three—a proposal that was supported by several parents of incoming kindergartners. Aliso School teachers, however, spoke against expansion, saying the program remains untested and the district doesn’t have sufficient bilingual staffing to expand.

“This program is in its infancy,” Aliso School Kindergarten teacher Gretchen Tofflemire told the board. “In this district, we simply do not have the resources to expand.”

At issue is the number of teachers who hold bilingual credentials qualifying them to teach DLI. As two DLI classes move through the grades, two additional bilingual teachers will be necessary to teach the program each year. Adding a third kindergarten class increases the number of bilingual teachers needed from 12 to 18 by 2023.

The DLI program, which was piloted in CUSD this year, immerses students in the Spanish language, starting with 90 percent Spanish instruction in kindergarten and increasing English instruction by 10 percent each subsequent year until fourth grade, when students receive 50 percent Spanish and 50 percent English. Onethird of the students in each class come from English-speaking households, onethird from Spanish-speaking households and one-third from bilingual households.

Research shows that in well-implemented language immersion programs, among other benefits, students from Spanishspeaking households achieve greater literacy in English compared to those who follow a traditional educational track.

Persoon expressed confidence in finding the staffing to support the expansion at Canalino. She said that the elementary school has several interested and qualified teachers now, and as teachers retire, only new teachers with bilingual credentials will be hired. She also explained that when classes begin receiving 50 percent instruction in English, there is opportunity for team teaching with an Englishonly and a Spanish-only teacher.

DLI programs have exploded in popularity around the state after the 2016 passage of Prop 58, which repealed bilingual restrictions. Though CUSD leadership has underscored DLI’s potential to close the education gap, program opponents

School board member maureen Claffey, whose daughter is in the first cohort of DLI students, spoke in favor of expanding the program given that 60 families have expressed interest in participating in next year’s DLI kindergarten classes. because the board elected earlier this year to reduce kindergarten class size from 24 to 20, next year’s DLI interest level equates to three classes.

Claffey, however, argued that the district should expand the program into Aliso School in order for it to be easily accessible to students in the surrounding neighborhoods. Of the 60 kindergartners interested in DLI, 23 live within the Aliso School boundaries.

Aliso teachers and Principal michelle Fox characterized a DLI expansion as premature, and staunchly opposed it expanding onto their campus. many of the speakers said they strongly support bilingualism but fear for future disruption caused by a too-fast expansion. They argued that a single DLI kindergarten class on the Aliso campus would not allow for necessary teacher collaboration, nor does the school have the resources key to the program.

The school board will make a decision on the expansion at its April 24 meeting. board members, excluding Claffey, said that they lean against adding a third class until the program has proven itself and a long-term plan is in place.

Classroom aides pink slipped, most will keep jobs On the advice of legal counsel, CUSD pink slipped all its instructional aides this spring in order to eliminate just a handful of aides at the middle and high school level. Based on seniority, aides will be rehired by early June to fill the elementary level positions.

“This is not a process any of us supports,” said Superintendent Diana Rigby, “but we work in a union environment, so this is what we have to do to follow the contract.” by cutting secondary school aides, the district will free funds to bolster electives at Carpinteria middle School. A full-time art teacher will be hired, and CmS will increase its music teacher’s schedule to full-time.

At the April 10 meeting, the board voted 3-2 in favor of the action. Claffey and fellow boardmember Rogelio Delgado opposed the move, characterizing it as promoting unnecessary turmoil for staff and discouraging staff’s loyalty to the district.

girls inc. of Carpinteria celebrated its history and culture of empowering women and girls at its annual Women of inspiration luncheon on Monday, april 16. “each year, our Women of inspiration luncheon celebrates the achievements of powerhouse women who are using their voice to create social change,” said Victoria Juarez, executive director of girls inc. of Carpinteria. the 2018 Women of inspiration award was given in honor of the memory of nancy Koppelman, a global activist, local visionary, and advocate for women’s rights. Koppelman’s passion for social equality began when she was a college student working in the women’s health care movement. Koppelman served as co-chair of the Women of inspiration luncheon for several years and was a longtime supporter of the organization. She also served as an ambas-

sador for UCSB’s arts & Lectures, was a key board member of Direct relief international, co-founded the global neighbhoorhood Fund, and served on the advisory boards of the aspen Brain Lab, the aspen institute and one heart World-Wide. “nancy was a fearless champion and crusader for women and girls locally and globally,” added Juarez.

“She was an inspirational force whose passion for life and enthusiastic spirit had no borders. We are endlessly grateful for her support of our mission and for showing everyone what it means to be a strong, smart, and bold woman.”

Nancy Koppelman is honored en memorium with the 2018 Women of Inspiration Award.

Carpinteria’s got talent

Opening night for the ninth annual Carpinteria Talent Showcase will be Saturday, April 21 at 7 p.m. at Alcazar Theatre. The Carpinteria Rotary Charitable Foundation, which puts on the event each year as a fundraiser, promises a show brimming with musical and dance talent, cherry-picked from our local community of stars. Theater goers should expect to see a wide variety of performances, including classical pianists, ukuleles, guitar, ballet and samba.

Performers range in ages from 9 to, well, “old” according to one participating Rotarian. Local news reporter John Palminteri will be the master of ceremonies.

One hundred percent of proceeds from the Talent Showcase directly benefit the Carpinteria community. This year, 50 percent of proceeds normally earmarked for purchasing new musical instruments will be donated to the Carpinteria Disaster Relief Fund, the other 50 percent are designated toward CUSD music programs. The Rotary Charitable Foundation decided to give to the local relief fund after learning that the recent fires and floods have left a significant number of local families experiencing financial hardship, including some families with school-aged children displaced from their homes.

For years, CUSD’s music program has been enriched by the donations provided by the Rotary Talent Showcase, which directly supports a vital component of

As students explore their world of music they learn to be the best that they can be in everything they do, giving good performances each and every day.”

Highlights from the event line-up include the Kule Klub, Jim Campos, Mark Brickley, Will Bremen, Sambistas de Brazil and members of the Carpinteria Middle School band.

A red-carpet reception from 6 to 7 p.m. is included in the ticket price of $45.

Santa Barbara-based singer and songwriter Will Breman on stage performing with his eclectic technique called “live looping”—a process where he records and plays back multiple instrument parts in real time, creating a one-man band effect. Meticulous at arranging his songs, Bremen believes this setup is truest to what he wants to express to his audiences.

Bremen will perform on stage during the reception prior to the show.

Sambistas de Brazil shine and shimmer in locally-made, carnival-inspired costumes while delivering energetic performances in traditional Brazilian samba dancing. Flower farms in bloom open doors to visitors

On Saturday, April 14, six Carpinteria flower farms opened their greenhouse doors for guided tours: Gallup & Stribling Orchids, Maximum Nursery and Ocean Breeze International, Myriad Flowers, Pianta Bella Nursery, Seaside Gardens and Westerlay Orchids. Visitors relished the opportunity to be immersed in rows upon rows of freshly bloomed daisies, roses, lilies, orchids and more. Flower farm owners and experts led the tours teaching visitors about the complete growing process. Visitors reveled in spectacular colors while learning the stunning elements of nature’s process.

Some of my friends wrote about the beach or Disneyland or trips to their grandparents’. Not me—I wrote about Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, two majestic worlds that have to be experienced to be truly appreciated.

Having grown up in Lindsay in the San Joaquin Valley, my family frequently made the trek up Highway 198, through Three Rivers with its candy store, and on to Hospital Rock just inside Sequoia Park.

1025 CASITAS PASS RD There’s a small picnic area there where we would usually eat lunch, feeding whatever relatives we were bringing up to the park so we could entertain and impress them with “the world’s largest trees.”

Next would be the stop at Moro Rock which rises 6,725 feet above sea level and gives climbers the chance to enjoy panoramic views of the valley below if they can get over any fear of heights. The

steps leading up this massive rock were originally made of wood, but these were later replaced by stone steps etched into the granite by workers in the 1930s. My mother had a death grip on my hand the first few times I climbed the trail, as there were few if any safety rails at the top. Eventually park officials found the money to rectify this problem.

After Moro Rock comes Giant Forest and Crescent Meadow. Up until the last few years, there was a lodge there with a rustic eating establishment, a huge fireplace, some pictures and memorabilia, a small store and a gas station. There were also old (ancient might not be an exaggeration) cabins situated near the meadow that park visitors could rent.

Many times, our family stayed in one of these cabins, and just sleeping inside those wooden structures made me feel a bit like a pioneer. Recently these buildings were removed and the area around Crescent Meadow returned to a more natural state. Also, instead of the lodge, Giant Forest now has a park museum.

A bit further up the road is the amazing General Sherman Tree. Rumor has it that a woman from Porterville made the long journey by horse up to the “big trees” and once she saw this giant specimen, she nailed up a wooden sign with General Sherman carved into it. It seems this general was one of her big heroes.

The name stuck.

Next is Wolverton, where there was a ski lodge when I was a teenager. This is where I “sort of” learned how to ski.

Now the whole area has pretty much been put back to its natural setting except for a park barbecue facility where families and visitors can enjoy outdoor cooking.

My friends and I had an interesting bear experience after a dinner at Wolverton.

The ranger, walking backwards, was just explaining about the animals we might see on our evening hike when who should come rambling up the trail but a black bear. The ranger called over to the

Boys & Girls Club’s Kids Auction honors CHS boys soccer team

The United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County will hold its 34th Annual Kids Auction at the Carpinteria Club on May 19 at 5 p.m. This year, the Club is honoring the Carpinteria High School boys soccer team for their state championship win. The event will have a 1980’s theme. “This event brings the entire Carpinteria community out in full force to support our organization,” said CEO Michael Baker. Proceeds from the auction fundraiser will support after-school and summer programming that provide a safe environment to learn skills through positive reinforcement, encouraging academic success, building good character and leadership and teaching healthy lifestyles. Rotary visits recycling plant

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria carpooled to Ventura, had a box lunch, and toured the Gold Coast Recycling & Transfer Station of Harrison Industries. Lynn Harrison, club member and community service chair, led the tour. Club members saw mountains of recyclable material, lines of trucks, sorting machines, multiple levels of conveyor belts, shaking tables, individuals sorting plastic, magnetic sorting, bales of cardboard, collection bins, several nets to keep the birds away, and more. The Ventura facility receives material from both Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties and ships 5 to 6 containers each week. Each container holds approximately 22 tons of sorted material that is shipped to Viet Nam, China and other parts of the world for reuse. Within the year, Gold Coast Recycling is planning a major modernization of the plant to insure they are ahead of the tightening restrictions for recycled materials across the globe.

They recently hired 38 more recycle line workers to sort people’s contaminated items and other materials.

Cate Girls lacrosse garners two more wins

The Cate School girls lacrosse is once again off to a sizzling start, capturing wins against Santa Barbara and Birmingham Charter last week to move to 8-0 on the year. Last season, the Rams rattled off victories in their first 16 games before finally falling to Chaminade in the third round of the CIF playoffs. “We started about a month behind most of the teams in Southern California (due to evacuations from the recent disasters and the school’s long Spring break), in terms of practices and games, so we are now first starting to hit our stride, and I can’t wait for playoffs,” said Cate coach Rene Mack.

And on their home field the Rams got on the scoreboard right away, with junior Maddie Erickson finding senior Brie Walker in front of the net for the game’s first goal, less than two minutes in. A minute later, Walker would run through the teeth of the Dons’ defense for her second goal, and a 2-0 lead. But Santa Barbara would counter with 18:46 left in the half, when senior Sabrina Loza netted a goal to cut the lead in half, at 2-1.

Ultimately, however, Cate would dominate possession, scoring a flurry of goals to essentially put the game away by halftime, taking an 11-1 lead into the break. “Brie Walker and Maddie Erickson controlled the center, winning 17 draws,” explained Mack. Walker scored seven goals and distributed three assists on the afternoon, while Maddie Erickson shredded six goals, and chipped in one assist.

“We’re trying to work on some new plays right now, and this was a good game to learn some new things,” said Walker.

Freshman Lilly Riehl extended the lead to 13-1 with a little over 19 minutes left in the game. But, the Dons strung a few goals together, with Loza picking up her second, and fellow senior Mia Barton adding two more to make it 13-4 with 13:44 left. The Rams then finished with three more goals, one by junior Tessa Denison (13) with a little over five minutes left to make it 16 to 4. The teams exchanged goals, but Cate walked away with a 17-5 victory, having beaten their Channel League foe for the second time in less than two weeks. Sophomore Kenzie Davidson also had a goal on the

Sophomore goalie Liza Borghesani made three saves on the day for the home team.

The next day, the Rams would travel to play Birmingham Charter of Lake Balboa—a top-10 team in Los Angeles from the San Fernando Valley. They jumped out to a big lead once again, going up 8-0 on the Patriots and returning to Cate Mesa with a 12-9 victory. “I think I’d say this is the best team so far, I’d say it’s been a really great team to be on all four years,” said senior Julia Farner (8) after the win over Santa Barbara. “I’d say it’s getting better every year, and hopefully that will continue next year,” added Farner whose played on the squad since her freshman year.

The Rams travel to take on rival Thacher on Tuesday, April 24, with a 5 p.m. faceoff in Ojai.

99th Russell Cup is in the books

Oaks Christian ran away with the team titles at the 99th Russell Cup, winning both varsity boys and girls divisions. Gavin Fua of Valley Christian was named the Outstanding Male Athlete of the Meet for his 170 foot, 10 inch discus win. Sydney Bentley of St. Bernard was the female athlete of the meet for winning the 100 and 400 meter events. The Carpinteria Warriors finished in second place over all, with Wyatt Stevenson, Shaya Alexander and Victor Rinaldi putting in exceptional performances. Stevenson ran a personal record of 22.85 to finish third in the 200, and came in fourth in the 100 with a time of 11.17—one hundredth of a second off his personal record at Easter Relays.

He was also the anchor for the third place 4 x 100 relay team. Alexander led the girls team with a second place in the triple jump, and was also a member of the second place 4 x 400 relay team. Rinaldi won the Barney Milne Carpinteria Lions Club award for the Warrior high point scorer, winning the Frosh/Soph 400 and 800 for 20 total points. His time of 51.83 was a new personal record.

Baseball

April 11 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team fell to Fillmore, 2-0. “The Fillmore Flashes zapped a good pitching effort by Chase Mayer and escaped with a 2-0 Tri-Valley League win over the Warriors,” said Warriors coach Pat Cooney. Mayer was ejected after a collision with the Fillmore catcher, and Noah Nuño took over on the mound. Mayer threw six innings, struck out two and gave up three hits, while tossing 80 pitches. “We’ll need to set some new goals in terms of responding to adversity and maintaining composure under challenging circumstances,” explained Cooney. Carpinteria is now 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the Tri-Valley League, and Fillmore improves to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in League.

April 13 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team fell to Fillmore at Booty Sanchez Field in Fillmore by a score of 9-1. “Warrior starter Noah Nuño was touched up for eight runs, but just two of them were earned as the Warrior defense was pressured into early miscues,” said Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney. Nuño was relieved by Miles Souza who allowed no earned runs over the final 3 1/3 innings. Flashes starter, Tyler Coert, gave up two hits and a single earned run, while tossing a complete game. “The good news is that we did play really well for the last four innings, it’s easy to find little things that will help each of the guys to build confidence going forward,” concluded Cooney. The Warriors continue Tri-Valley League play next week with a two-game set vs. League leader Grace Brethren.

Softball

April 12 – The Carpinteria High School softball team won 13-3 over Malibu. The Warriors scored a run in the first on an error, a stolen base and two passed balls with Kayana Diaz being the recipient of all the above. In the bottom half, pitcher Amanda Blair struck out the side. In the third, Samantha Saenz’s bases-loaded double, scored three runs. Jauslyn Richardson’s single in the fourth scored two runs in a bases-loaded situation. The Warriors scored five runs and tallied three runs apiece in successive innings with Mikayla Blair scoring on a double by Isabel Studt to put the game away for Carpinteria.

Track and field

April 14 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team hosted the 99th Russell Cup with Oaks Christian running away with team titles in both the boys and girls divisions. Wyatt Stevenson ran a Personal Record (PR) of 22.85 seconds to finish third in the 200 meters; and was the anchor on the third place 4 x 100 relay team. Shaya Alexander led the girls team with a second-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 34 feet, four-and-one-half inches, achieving a new PR. Alexander was also part of the second place 4 x 400 relay team. Victor Rinaldi won the Barney Milne Carpinteria Lions Club award for the Warrior high point scorer, capturing the Frosh/Soph 400 and 800 for 20 total points with a time of 51.83, a new PR.

Boys volleyball

April 17 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team was on the road again, this time to face off against the Santa Clara Saints, where they pulled away with a 3-0 win. “Libero Number-five Jiovanni Arciniega was profoundly noticeable in the back row, stopping a lot of Santa Clara’s bit attacks,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia whose libero ended the night with 16 digs and four aces. Starting middle blocker Number-three Ben Medel contributed 11 kills, and outside hitter Number-seven Liam Slade pitched in 13 kills and three blocks. “The Saints never gave up, but the Warriors’ hitting power proved too much,” explained Garcia. The Warriors overall record improves to 7-4 and league record to 6-2. The Warriors will travel to longtime rival Bishop High for a league match on April 19.

April 11 – The Cate School baseball team dropped their league opener in Ventura, as the Rams fell to the Foothill Dragons, 5-2. “Junior Ethan Cassulo had the best day for the Rams, going two-for-two with two singles and an RBI,” said Rams assistant coach Dave Soto. Freshman William Deardorff had Cate’s only extra base hit with an RBI double. Sophomore Scott Holmes, freshman Daniel Panadero, and junior Jack Deardorff each had a hit for Cate. Sophomore Dalton Phillips picks up his first loss of the year on the mound. “Patrick Armstrong turned in a fine performance in one inning of work, and Scott Holmes played great defense for Cate, flashing the leather at third base. Emily Burns also made some solid plays,” said Soto.

Sophomore Dalton Phillips had a single, as did freshman Ethan Cassulo, senior Patrick Armstrong and junior McCarthy Willett. “I’m proud of the way we battled today, we fought hard when our backs were against the wall, and we never quit,” said Rams assistant coach Dave Soto. After Foothill Tech scored three runs in the top of the eighth to take a three-run lead, Cate fought back to tie the game, pushing the contest into the ninth inning only to have the Dragons score again in the ninth to bring home the win.

Boys tennis

April 12 – The Cate School boys tennis team improved to 5-4 overall and 5-1 in the Tri-Valley League with a 15-3 win over League rival Malibu. “Cate swept all nine Singles sets for the first time this season behind the good play of sophomore Ethan Ha, senior Joseph Thomassen and junior Charles Xie,” said Rams coach Jason Ebin. The Doubles team of sophomores Devin Pai/Parker May also swept for Cate.

Boys volleyball

April 12 – The Cate School boys volleyball team, missing two players, rallied to a sweep over Malibu in three sets: 25-13, 25-18 and 25-15. “Our middles performed well today, with Ethan Ng providing fire power, hitting a solid .570 with five kills; and Ian MacFarlane notching three blocks and two kills,” said Rams coach K.C. Collins. Sophomore Jackson Weinberger hit .500 during the match and added six digs.

“Outsides Cullen Barber and Theo Mack worked well to lead both on offense and defense,” explained Collins. Barber racked up 11 digs and seven kills, while Mack scooped up 10 digs and had an impressive .460 hitting percentage, smacking down 24 kills. “The entire team worked well together under a new lineup and showed true teamwork,” added Collins.

April 13 – The Cate School boys volleyball team in their third match of the week, having been on the road twice already, beat Fillmore in three sets: 25-12, 25-13 and 25-22. “The first rally started off with a smooth dig and set that resulted in outside Cullen Barber smashing the ball down,” said Rams coach K.C. Collins. Barber picked up 18 digs and 11 kills. “The positive energy and desire was infectious as all the players worked together, even with a lineup switch in third set, to achieve a team hitting average of .333 with 39 kills, seven service aces and 56 combined digs,” exclaimed Collins.

“Thursday Nite Lites” set for April 19 and 26

The Carpinteria High School football team will be hosting “Thursday Nite Lites” on the last two Thursday nights in April—April 19 and 26––at 6 p.m. The two-night event will feature football skills and drills with the 2018 Warrior players offering free instruction. SigneD, Brotherly love Dear Brotherly, There are many reasons families keep secrets. Sometimes it is to protect someone or to hide shame. Best to trust your mother for now and continue to treat your brother just as you always have.

You are all part of the same family, so it really shouldn’t matter that one member is chosen rather than born into the family.

Dear Donnie, My sister thinks she is in love. She is 21 but very immature. She wants to get married now because her boyfriend plans to join the army. Dear SiSter’S keeper, Be careful what you say, and know it probably won’t do any good. It’s interesting that your parents think it is OK. She is legally an adult and is entitled to make her own decisions and her own mistakes.

Better than showing your disapproval, suggest she get premarital counseling. A program that has a long record of success is called Marriage Encounter. They hold weekend workshops all over the country.

The emphasis is on good communication between couples. This helps any couple— both those just getting married and those who have been together a long time. So, do your best without criticizing.

Dear Donnie, Our community has had several disasters including evacuations and I’m wondering how others are handling this problem. I’m still feeling unsettled. Any advice?

SigneD, Still Shaken Dear Still Shaken, You are not alone. These unprecedented events have affected everybody. Most people are slowly getting back to normal but still feel unsettled. Now more than ever take care of your health. Make sure to get enough exercise, eat right and get enough sleep. Evacuations were especially traumatic because we suddenly had to decide where to go and what to take. Until the hillsides fill in enough to hold back the soil, we will all share a sense of foreboding when it rains. Also, take time now to check your insurance.

Be sure it is adequate for current values.

Take photos of all valuables. If you have priceless collections, paintings or jewelry get extra insurance. Because stress takes a terrible toll on all of us, so be good to yourself and others. By next year things will be better.

of the wedding invitation: ”Guests please refrain from wearing any fragrance as the bride is very allergic. Thank you.” Do you think people will be offended?

Dear Donnie, We have just moved here from another part of the country and are having a hard time getting used to things here. My new friends at school seem shocked at the way my parents talk, especially my mother.

She is very friendly and people have always liked her but she swears a lot. It seems natural to me. I feel that everyone is kind of making fun of her. I don’t want her to get hurt. What shall I do?

It is now common for young people, even women, to use the “F-word.” Movies and rap music feature a lot of profanity. Call me old-fashioned, but I don’t like it. I just saw the movie “I, Tonya” and I was shocked at the mother’s language. Allison Janney even won best actress for that role. Have a heart-to-heart talk with your mother and tell her how it makes you feel. She may be able to change.

Dear Donnie, We have just enrolled our daughter in a private school run by our church. I’ve noticed that the teacher sometimes uses incorrect grammar and it bothers me. For instance, she says “between you and I” instead of “between you and me.” Lots of people make that mistake but I think a teacher should know better. Should I mention my concern to the principal?

SigneD, grammar mom Dear grammar, Yes, I would mention your concern, but be aware that the principal may defend the teacher’s use of something that is in common usage. Unfortunately, we have gotten rather sloppy in our language and incorrect grammar is hardly noticed. If you like the school otherwise, mention that too.

Dear Donnie, I just noticed a posting on Craig’s List for a vacation rental in our neighborhood. We are in an area where that is not permitted. Should I inform the poster, the neighbors or the city? Should I just wait to see if it’s a problem?

SigneD, permit poliCe Dear permit, Lots of communities have made new rules about vacation rentals and AirBnB. Most of these rules are only enforced when people complain. The idea is to limit the use to free up more housing for permanent residents. Whenever there is a new law it takes a while for everyone to be aware of it. You can count on someone to find out and take action. Let your conscience be your guide.

We are seeking a motivated, resourceful individual who is eager to learn the job duties of the OIT position. Under general supervision, the Operator-In-Training will perform a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant including monitoring wastewater treatment plant processes, performing routine laboratory tests, and other key tasks necessary to maintain and operate a state of the art wastewater treatment facility. The selected candidate will participate in a comprehensive training program and will be required to obtain an Operator in Training Certificate from the State Water Resources Control Board.

Obtaining a Grade 2 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification within 36 months from date of hire is a requirement of the position.

Regular working hours for this position are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. with ability to work weekends, nights and holidays as needed. Possession of a valid California driver’s license and a high school diploma or equivalent is required.

The District offers a competitive compensation package that includes a CalPERS retirement program, medical, dental and vision insurance for employee and dependents, life insurance, sick/vacation leave, and paid holidays.

Rotary Club of Carpinteria supports CUSD music programs

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria made a $10,500 donation to Carpinteria Unified School district music programs at the elementary schools and the middle school on April 10, during the school board meeting. Rotary’s ongoing support for CuSd includes a number of scholarships—all funded by the club’s charitable foundation which “allows us to make donations on an ongoing basis,” said Rotarian paul Wright.

Howard School kids eat a sweet treat to support their school

on Friday, the Kona ice truck visited the howard School on hawaiian day, a kickoff event for the run-up to the Aloha Auction which is Saturday, April 21 at 3 p.m.

Kona ice donated twenty percent of proceeds back to the school.

Agents from Coldwell banker who participate in the company’s Star program for local philanthropy, presented Carpinteria high School performing Arts and Athletics with a check for $5,000 on April 13. ChS students participating in performing arts and athletics will be dual beneficiaries of the donation.

On a recent cruise around Cape Horn, Stephen Joyce and Linda Boysiewick stopped off in Stanley, the capital of the Falkland Isles. In 1982, the United Kingdom sent troops to counterattack the islands after Argentine forces had invaded and claimed the Falklands. In total 907 people, including 16 civilian Argentinian sailors and three Falklands Islander women killed by British friendly fire, died in the conflict between April and June 1982. The Falkland Islands remain a British territory. Many minefields still dot the island countryside.

Shine the gecko

Despite appearances, Shine the leopard gecko rarely tucks in to a good novel— she prefers nonfiction. The spotty reptile may be native to Asia, but her human Holyn Vega picked up Shine and a second gecko, Lilly, at Petco last fall. Tragically, Lilly was an unreported victim of the Thomas Fire–she passed away during a cold and bumpy evacuation. Though a little lonely these days, Shine enjoys short walks around her terrarium and loves to lounge in her tiny cave situated on top of a heating pad. When it’s dinnertime, Shine shows off her predatory talents, hunting down crickets and swallowing them after a single strategic chomp.

On Nov. 24, 2017 Brianna Stout and Curt Direnzi were married in their Carpinteria home. The ceremony was officiated by the groom’s brother Brad Direnzi.

Joining the couple in celebration were the bride’s parents Rick and Lorie Stout of Carpinteria, and the groom’s parents Greg and Joanne Direnzi of Greensburg, Penn. Brianna is a second-grade teacher at Canalino Elementary School and Curt is director of sales for Giles Scientific, Inc., Santa Barbara.

Cirillo - Trujillo

Kristy Cirillo and Andres Trujillo were married at Camp Pendleton on February 10, 2018. The bride, daughter of Chris and Tom McAlexander and Nick Cirillo, graduated from Carpinteria High School before studying fine art and ballet at the University of Utah; currently she is a professional ballet dancer and pilates business owner. The groom, son of Nancy Cardenales and Eduardo Trujillo, is a U.S. Marine staff sergeant, small ensemble leader and marine musician. After the wedding, the couple drove across the country to their new residence on the Potomac River in Quantico, Virginia at the Marine Corps base.
