Surfer rescues family trapped in Bates Beach rip currents

On Thursday, April 8, Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District firefighters responded to Bates Beach for a boy struggling to escape a rip current. The boy’s sister and grandfather went into the water to try to help but were all struggling to get to shore. Before the firefighters arrived, a surfer paddled out to help the family.

“At that point, an unknown surfer came to the rescue and helped get everyone out of the water,” said Kenan Marting, CSFPD firefighter. “Multiple beachgoers also ran out to help and check on everyone.”

When CSFPD rescue swimmers arrived on scene, immediately after the family was brought to shore, they had the kids assessed by medics.

“The family involved, as well as the responding firefighters would like to send a huge ‘halo’ to the surfer for his heroic actions that saved these kids,” Marting said.

“CSFPD would like to also stress the importance of ocean safety and swimming near rip currents. ‘When in doubt, don’t go out.’”

Glass House Farms to go public in over $1 billion deal

Glass House Group, which has cannabis cultivation facilities in the Carpinteria Valley, is expected to go public in a merger with Mercer Park Brand Acquisition Corp., in a deal worth more than $1 billion, according to Reuters.

In the proposed deal, according to Reuters, Glass House would take over pot retailer Element 7’s licenses in California and buy a tomato greenhouse in the state with 5.5 million square feet of space that will be converted to grow cannabis.

County Sheriff’s Office updates online platform

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office now offers more services on SBSheriff.org, including online reporting, a search engine for inmates in custody, and a job board.

Crimes can now be reported online, and residents can also use this portal to request a vacation check of their residence. The website also has easy access buttons on the home page that link to LiveScan appointment information, parking ticket payment information, wanted person’s information, Megan’s Law information and other features.

Summerland Sanitary District appoints new operations manager

Noe Aguilar Vega will serve as the Summerland Sanitary District’s new operations manager, according to Dave Novis, president of the Sanitary District Board. Aguilar Vega has been with the district for over seven years. This month, Aguilar Vega received the annual President’s Award for outstanding service from the Santa Barbara chapter of the Special District Association (CSDA).

MTD Transit Center to reopen, fare collection to resume

Noe Aguilar Vega will serve as the Summerland Sanitary District’s new operations manager.

After over a year of no fare collection due to the pandemic, Santa Barbara MTD will reinstate fares on May 10. In order to give riders time to purchase passes before that date, the Transit Center will reopen on April 26.

The Transit Center underwent renovation from the summer of 2019 to the summer of 2020, but did not open to the public due to the pandemic and the fact that MTD was not selling passes or collecting fares. While the building will reopen on April 26, the use of the interior will be limited to two types of activities: conducting a transaction and getting bus information.

At this time, customers will not be able to remain inside the building to wait for their buses, in order to allow sufficient physical distancing for those individuals conducting business. Transit Center hours will remain the same: 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

On May 10, all passengers will be required to board through the front door of the bus and pay a fare via cash or pass. Customers are encouraged to purchase their passes with debit or credit cards at the ticket vending machines, in order to reduce cash handling.

“Throughout the pandemic, MTD has placed the safety of our customers and employees first, while serving essential workers, and the community as a whole.

As we transition back to fare collection, we appreciate the community support for our health and safety protocols and our team of Customer Service Representatives is ready to welcome our loyal passengers into the newly renovated Transit Center,” said General Manager Jerry Estrada.

Additionally, beginning April 15, Santa Barbara MTD will increase the number of passengers allowed on board all MTD buses. Federal law requires that passengers wear face coverings correctly at all times onboard all buses, at bus stops, and in and around the Transit Center.

Load limits will be increased as follows: 20 passengers on a 40-foot bus and 15 passengers on a 30-foot bus. This is up from the previous capacity of 15 passengers on a 40-foot bus and 10 on a 30-foot bus.

County halts Johnson & Johnson Covid vaccinations

Santa Barbara County Public Health announced Tuesday night, April 13, that it would pause administration of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine until further notice. The announcement came after the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) issued a statement from Dr. Erica Pan, state epidemiologist, recommending that health care providers temporarily suspend Johnson & Johnson/Janssen Covid-19 vaccines “out of an abundance of caution.” Of over 6.8 million doses administered nationally, there have been six reported cases of a rare and severe type of blood clot with symptoms occurring six to 13 days after vaccination, according to CDPH. “California is following the FDA and CDC’s recommendation and has directed health care providers to pause the use of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine until we receive further direction from health and safety experts,” stated Pan. “Additionally, the state will convene the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup to review the information provided by the federal government on this issue. As the federal government has said, we do not expect a significant impact to our vaccination allocations. In California, less than 4% of our vaccine allocation this week is the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.”

New Covid infections down 74% from two-week average

On April 13, the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department reported 11 new cases on the day, bringing the adjusted case rate per 100,000 to 4.6.

Santa Barbara County has vaccinated 21.5% of its population, according to the county’s Public Health Department. Doses administered as of April 12 totaled 260,093, including vaccinations given by the county, CVS, Walgreens and RiteAid. New cases by the two-week average metric are now down by 74%, with active cases also down by 23%. The test positivity rate is at 1.9%.

The county reported 33,736 confirmed cases of Covid-19 to date on April 13, indicating 355 new infections countywide in the past seven days.

There have now been 441 confirmed deaths from the novel coronavirus, 20 in the South County communities of Carpinteria, Montecito and Summerland where there have been 1,353 confirmed Covid-19 infections.

Santa Barbara County moves closer to the Orange Tier

Santa Barbara County has met the state’s Orange Tier case rate and positivity rate for one week. If these metrics are met for one additional week, movement into the less restrictive Orange Tier may take effect as early as Wednesday, April 21. This movement will further ease restrictions and allow more indoor activities, in accordance with the rules and framework of the Blueprint for a Safer Economy.

The county can move into the Orange Tier when its case rate has been under six cases per every 100,000 residents and test positivity is under 4.9% for two consecutive weeks. The potential for this forward move comes after the state raised the metrics threshold for counties to meet after achieving a goal to vaccinate more than 4 million Californians who live in areas hardest hit by the pandemic, as measured by the Healthy Places Index.

Santa Barbara County’s adjusted case rate is currently 4.6 cases per 100,000 residents and local test positivity is 1.9%.

Activities which will be allowed when the county is in the Orange Tier include indoor restaurant seating at 50% capacity; gyms and fitness centers operating indoors with 25% capacity; and movie theaters, museums, zoos and places of worship open at 50% capacity for indoor activities.

CITY BEAT Council voices concern with county’s Bailard Ave. housing project

The council unanimously voted on Monday to move forward with memorandum of understanding (MOU) negotiations for the Bailard Avenue housing project, after extensive discussions about how the council could have little to no say on the project without the MOU. The property, located at 1001-1003 Bailard Avenue, is just outside city limits and is currently owned by the Carpinteria Unified School District. According to documents submitted during the meeting, the seven-acre site is currently occupied by agricultural row crops and several single-family homes.

City Manager Dave Durflinger clarified that the city council would not have authority over any land-use changes or permitting for the project; the land is outside city limits and is being handled by Santa Barbara County. John Polansky, from the county’s housing authority, said the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors would have final authority over the project.

The MOU would “provide a context for influencing that process, but in terms of authority, yay or nay or modification as the city has over land and development proposals within its (boundaries), we wouldn’t have that here,” Durflinger said.

The council expressed severe concerns about the possibility of having no final say on the project, as well as about how the apartment complex would fit into the city’s long-term plans.

“The height is a concern, it’s 35 feet and three stories. It is prime (agricultural) land even though it’s not zoned (agricultural) land,” Councilmember Gregg Carty said. “This has to be a collaborative project here, and if it’s not, it’ll be bad for both the county and the city of Carpinteria.”

In regard to the MOU, Councilmember Roy Lee said that “it’s better to have a seat at the table than to be on the outside looking in.”

Steve Goggia, community development director, said the project is still in the “concept-only” stage and that there have not yet been public hearings held on the matter.

The proposed apartment complex would split 173 total apartment units into market-rate and “affordable units.”

132 of the apartments are classified as market-rate, and 41 as “affordable.” The market-rate units would be three stories with no garages. Goggia said a small portion of the complex will also serve as a homeless shelter.

The project also plans for a “higher rate” of parking spots than required by the county to help “stem any parking outside of the developments on the local streets within the city,” according to Goggia.

Goggia said that what is being proposed is still in flux.

“It doesn’t mean this is what will go through the process and be approved ultimately,” he said.

Durflinger said there are neighbor and agricultural concerns that the project must adapt to.

“We believe this may be a rare opportunity to meet our local needs for our apartment units in Carpinteria,” Durflinger said. “This project also includes a restricted income portion of it, but in general the overall project is a type that is affordable by design.”

Polansky said it is a “difficult balance” when it comes to providing affordable housing near the coast.

“We determined that the number of units that were likely to be able to be on the site, and then how many of those

could be affordable – because quite frankly, the non-affordable units are paying for the affordable units,” Polansky said.

Several community members wrote into the record or spoke during the meeting to oppose the project, with some bringing up concerns about the land’s suitability as farm land rather than as a residential property.

Susie Anderson expressed concern about both the land’s use as farmland as well as the project’s proposed “affordable” housing, noting that the majority of the complexes would not be “affordable” units.

“It is not good for Carpinteria because it eliminates the buffer zone parcels at the edge of our city that protect our homes from the spring dust and noise ...

It proposes to pave five acres of farmland now supplying the community with fresh organic hand-picked produce. It violates our established urban line, putting a dense residential development where transitional agriculture should remain,” Anderson said.

Mike Wondolowski, president of Carpinteria Valley Association, said the association is “deeply concerned” about the proposal.

“Carpinteria interest must be represented in discussions,” Wondolowski said. He presented several points against the project, calling the project “inappropriate in its proposed location” and stating that the “urban-rural boundary must be maintained.”

Lorraine McIntyre, who said she is on the Villa Del Mar Homeowners Association Board, said that while she isn’t opposed to the development, she is concerned about the amount of parking the complex would have and how it would affect the neighboring communities.

The proposed housing complex would be located at 1001-1003 Bailard Ave., just outside Carpinteria’s city limits in unincorporated Santa Barbara County, giving the county all authority over any land-use changes or permitting for the project.

Closed session

During a closed session, council members discussed price and terms of payment for the proposed Surfliner Inn and its ground lease, according to city legal counsel Jena Shoaf Acos. She said no reportable action came out of the session.

Shoaf Acos said the council will be considering the approval of the Surfliner Inn DDA and its ground lease at an open public meeting, tentatively scheduled for May 20, 2021.

Update on Highway 101 freeway construction

Kirsten Ayars, from Ayars & Associates, said the Highway 101 project is currently in Phase 4 of the project, which covers the stretch from Carpinteria to Santa Barbara. The southbound side of the project was mainly tackled in 2020, while the northbound side will be altered during the duration of 2021.

“The significant project of the overall lane and train solution (is) to adjust traffic congestion. This project does that by adding a new peak period carpool lane to the freeway in each direction,” Ayars said.

She explained that the project will also tackle three new segments along the freeway beginning this summer, as well as replacing bridges under Franklin and Santa Monica creeks. The project will also focus on improving on- and off-ramps at Santa Monica Road, Carpinteria and Reynolds avenues, as well as adding six new sound walls.

City’s annual waste day event sees 250 carloads

On Saturday, April 10, Carpinterians disposed of household hazardous waste, goods, appliances, e-waste and more at the Annual Household Goods and Hazardous Waste Day event put on by the city of Carpinteria and E.J. Harrison & Sons. Community members remained in their vehicles and wore masks while event staff took items for disposal from their vehicles’ trunk or truck bed.

Carpinteria’s environmental coordinator Erin Maker said that event saw approximately 250 attendees, and noted an unusual level of traffic in vehicles.

Maker also praised the Public Works and Parks departments field crews. “They do a great job and were out there after a hard week of doing crack sealing on roadways as well as their normal duties,” she said.

The only items not accepted at the annual event are biohazards, nuclear waste, explosives and tires.

On April 24, the city will hold a similar ABOP (antifreeze, batteries, oil and paint) disposal event at City Hall from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is a limit of 5 gallons of liquid maximum per visit at each ABOP event, as the bimonthly events are part of an ongoing effort to collect hazardous waste on the second and fourth Saturday of each month. Bailard apartments spell disaster

At this week’s City Council meeting, the council voted to enter into negotiations with Santa Barbara County and the Santa Barbara County Housing Authority about a proposal that would convert 6.9 acres of our urban/agricultural buffer zone into a housing project with 173 apartment units.

The project is slated to be located at the northern end of Bailard Avenue, behind the Casitas Village condominium complex, an area currently occupied by a large organic farm and four separate residences. Bailard Avenue is presently home to hundreds of condominiums and is considered to be the densest portion of our city. To add 173 apartments to the mix will be an urban/rural disaster as farmers try to farm their avocado orchards and urban dwellers deal with the increased traffic, noise and visual blight of looking at three-story apartment buildings rather than the view of the mountains they now share.

Please let your City Council and the Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors know how you feel about this project. Carpinteria has a long history of agriculture and paving it over for apartments doesn’t fit into the narrative we want for our town.

Biden too abrupt

In a previous letter, I mentioned that while I didn’t vote for Joe Biden, he would be my president and I wanted him to do well. I now have some serious reservations. First, the abrupt decision

to halt construction of the Keystone Pipeline. Granted, this project has been controversial from its inception. However, the reality is that at present we need fossil fuels to heat our homes, run our vehicles, power industry and manufacturing, provide electricity, and to create the modern hand-held devices we love so much. We are now energy independent. We need to stay that way and not provide opportunities for not-so-friendly countries to become needed energy suppliers. The solar panels that John Kerry says laid-off Keystone workers will be trained to produce require fossil fuels to produce. Biden’s executive order has produced heavy unemployment in the U.S. and Canada. Bottom line: The phasing out of fossil fuels is a long-term project and should be done sensibly and carefully.

Second, the border crisis. This is definitely a result of Biden’s executive order abruptness. Granted, the overall immigration situation should have been handled by Congress many years ago, but Biden took a bad situation and turned it into a massive human crisis which he is now spreading across the U.S. at a time of Covid-19 recovery.

Lastly, communicating directly with the American people: Biden does little of this. When he does, he often appears to be reading a prepared speech from a teleprompter.

These are three of many reservations I have about Joe Biden. He seems hellbent on undoing things associated with Donald Trump and failing to successfully address much needed concerns and reforms. That’s my opinion. This is the America I love. You have every right to think otherwise.

Dorothy was the only child of William Houston Millar and Ruth Millar (Ellis), and was born in Glasgow, Scotland on Jan. 21, 1934. She met her beloved husband James in the British Royal Air Force. They were married on Dorothy’s 21st birthday, and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary just days before Jim’s passing in 2015.

Dorothy is most known for her career as a prolific “plein air” landscape artist.

Mostly self-taught, she studied at the Regional College of Art in Manchester, England, and the Vancouver Art School in British Columbia, Canada. She exhibited paintings in the Paisley Art Museum and Glasgow Gallery of Fine Arts in Scotland and has work in the British National Collection. She has pieces in private collections all over the world, and had many shows locally over the years, including Soho and the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum.

She was one of the four artists who started the Santa Barbara beach art show, and was known there by her iconic straw hat. She joined other local artists in environmental efforts to preserve open spaces, notably the Oak Group. She gave art classes at her studio, and some of her students continue in her footsteps, showing their work at the beach art show.

with untold skills and talents, not least of which was always knowing who was on the phone before it rang. She became a Chiropodist (Podiatrist in this country) and fixed the corns of an Archbishop shortly before he helped crown Queen Elizabeth II. When she joined the RAF, a special session of Parliament opened a new trade group because of her. As the first, she was given her choice of transferring to any RAF station in the world but remained at the training base where she had just met Jim. There she became a rifle sharpshooter.

She loved birds, and rescued many.

Her children remember finding grubs and earwigs to feed the nestlings, teaching a mockingbird to fly, and seeing Mum visiting with a friend, a baby pigeon tucked in one arm, chewing up birdseed to poke down its throat in between sips of tea. She spent days (in the rain) at the Child’s Estate Foundation Zoo helping save the lives of seabirds after the horrific 1969 oil slick, and was surprised to find pictures of herself washing birds in the Los Angeles Times.

Dorothy was unique, creative and completely inimitable. She gave great parties where she had everyone up dancing, leading the way with her purple dress, tiara, parasol and “floozy feathers.” She loved Dixieland Jazz and Johnny Cash.

Her imagination was always bringing something new, from the Millenium obelisk her neighbors so enjoyed, to a Mad Hatter’s tea party for friends inside the new shed Jim had built. She loved “bling,” fairies, chocolate – oh, yes, chocolate – and above all, people. Truly a people person, she became best friends with everyone she met, learning their story and that of all their family within minutes.

Teachers question reopening plan in letter to CUSD board

In a letter to Carpinteria Unified School District Board members, a group of 14 teachers from Carpinteria High School (CHS) have taken issue with several of the statements made by Superintendent Diana Rigby at the March 30 Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees meeting, including her claims about vaccinations for teachers as well as the reasoning behind discontinuing Cohort C, or the Zoom learning option, at Carpinteria Middle School.

The letter states that teachers at CHS have not been asked about their vaccination status, and asks board members to recall Rigby’s statement regarding vaccines at the March 30 meeting: “The principals have reported over 90% of their staff who have chosen to be vaccinated received vaccines. So, at this point that’s why we chose the late date of March 29 to reopen secondary and now it’s April 5.

Most of all of our teachers who wanted to be vaccinated are vaccinated,” Rigby said.

“Teachers at CHS have not been asked about their vaccination status,” the letter reads. “Where did Superintendent Rigby get this information that influenced the board’s decision?”

In response, Rigby told Coastal View News that “the principals reported their site information at our weekly Leadership Team meeting in March.”

CHS Principal Gerardo Cornejo could not be reached for comment about whether he had reported vaccination information for CHS at a prior Leadership Team meeting, or whether CHS teachers had been asked about their vaccination status.

The teachers confirmed that they stand by their initial statement that CHS teachers have not been asked about their vaccination status.

“Our return date of March 29 was the first Monday start date available to return to campus after Santa Barbara County entered the Red Tier,” the letter states.

“To portray the return in any other way is disingenuous at best and a falsehood at worst.”

“In fact,” the letter continues, “If Superintendent Rigby were interested in teachers being vaccinated before returning to work, she would have, at the very least, left the secondary full return to April 12th as it is stated on the board agenda and the posted re-opening plan from March 30, instead of moving the date up to April 5.”

The letter also discusses the discontinuation of Cohort C, the Zoom learning option, at the middle school level.

At the March 30 meeting, board member Jaime Diamond asked, “Have we had feedback from teachers on how that Cohort C synchronous learning, that concurrent classroom, how that’s going?”

Regarding this exchange, the letter by CHS teachers states that “students are not sitting in all of their classes Zooming” and that “teachers were not surveyed about their planned instructional strategies.”

“Superintendent Rigby did not observe our classes,” the teachers write.

“Teachers are, in fact, using a variety of instructional strategies based on course content and materials as is always true in our classrooms.”

In response to the CHS teachers’ concerns, Rigby stated that “Cohort C was not eliminated at CHS.” Rigby did not respond to the concerns outlined in the letter about eliminating Cohort C at the middle school level.

Lastly, the letter states that Rigby “did not give any statistics as to how many, now disenfranchised, families had chosen Cohort C for their children at CMS.” In response, Rigby stated that “CMS has 50 students on Independent Study.”

Rigby did not provide the statistics that the letter called for regarding how many families had initially chosen Cohort C before it was discontinued.

“We hope that these exchanges will serve to highlight to the board the deep mistrust that exists between teachers and the district administration,” the letter concludes. “We ask that in the future the board seek out the voices of those most affected by the district’s decisions: the families and teachers and staff of CUSD.”

Medical leaves

During the 2020-2021 school year, the HR department has accommodated 34 leave requests consistent with state and federal laws. There are a number of laws that may apply when an employee submits a medical note from their physician. The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the California Family Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) could potentially apply.

Different circumstances involve different laws. These laws have different requirements for employees to qualify as disabled or for job protected leave.

When the district receives a medical note, it assesses which laws may be applicable to each employee’s circumstances and whether additional information is required to determine whether the employee meets the legal requirements to qualify for the benefits available under potentially applicable laws.

The ADA and FEHA prohibit discrimination in the workplace based on an employee’s disability as well as retaliation for exercising any right under these laws.

An individual is considered to have a disability if they have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. For employees who qualify under the ADA and/ or FEHA, the district may be obligated to develop reasonable accommodations enabling the employee to perform the essential functions of their job.

Employees are responsible for ensuring that they provide the district with the required information to determine whether they have a qualifying disability and whether they can perform the essential functions of their position, with or without reasonable accommodations.

Employees are required to provide the district with the information necessary to determine whether the employee qualifies for potentially applicable leave. Even if an employee has not specifically requested leave under these laws, the laws put the responsibility on the district to determine whether the employee qualifies and to designate the leave correctly. To comply with its responsibilities to its employees, the district often needs additional information from those employees.

Safe routes to school

Last week, when all students returned to campuses, the Sheriff’s Office increased patrols at school sites to monitor traffic and pedestrian safety. The city posted flashing signs at pedestrian crossings to remind drivers that students were crossing streets to school. We appreciate both City Manager Durflinger and Lt. Ugo Arnoldi for responding to our requests for improving the safety of students walking and biking to school.

State assessments

On March 16, the State Board of Education approved the plan for 2020-2021 school year: Local education agencies will be allowed to use the most viable option for assessment in their local context, including: Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments for ELA and mathematics or other diagnostic, benchmark or interim assessments locally chosen that meet five criteria, and no science test required.

CUSD doesn’t have assessments for grades 3-8 and 11 in ELA and mathematics that meet the five criteria. Therefore, we will be administering CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) in grades 3-8 and 11 during the months of May and June on Wednesdays, in-person for elementary and online for secondary students.

Powerful women and girls take center stage at Women of Inspiration Luncheon

While this year’s Women of Inspiration fundraiser luncheon for Girls Inc. of Carpinteria looked different from previous years, the powerful messages from inspirational women and girls shined through stronger than ever.

Held virtually via Zoom on Monday, April 12, Girls Inc. kicked off the interactive luncheon with its emcees, Eureka! member Yuri Hernandez and Girls Inc of Carpinteria staff member and recent alumna Marisa Mata, who introduced the 2021 Women of Inspiration honorees: Nirasha Rodriguez, executive chef and owner of The Food Liaison; Natalia Alarcon, Carpinteria City Councilmember and the first Latina woman and the youngest to hold a seat on the council since 2012; and April Nunez, a longtime educator within the Carpinteria Unified School District, and advisor and creator of the Celebrating Adversity, Diversity and Education Club (CADE). The honorees were presented with awards and thanked for the important work they continue to do in the community.

As a surprise twist, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria inducted its first-ever junior honorees, who join the luncheon’s notable roster of Women of Inspiration recipients.

“I immediately felt comforted being at Girls Inc. because I had found a safe place to learn about my sexuality and discuss my mental health,” Alarcon shared. “Girls Inc.’s approach to mental health, the mentorships I’ve received through one-on-one conversations, and the group check-ins are resources that have uplifted me. The personal connections have gone a long way toward keeping my mental health in check, especially during times of instability.”

Local business owner and author Jenny Schatzle, creator of Bond Fitness, served as the keynote speaker. Schatzle’s motivation to help women feel good about themselves stemmed from her own battle with insecurities growing up. She shared how she spent most of her life displeased with the way she looked and feeling like

Rotary Club of Carpinteria presents a showcase of talent

This weekend, Carpinteria’s eclectic community of outstanding performers will once again bring delight and enchantment to the city by the sea in the Rotary Club of Carpinteria’s Annual Talent Showcase, this year held virtually and presented to the public for free.

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria’s Talent Committee has embraced the challenges of the pandemic to put together a memorable online event. After having to cancel last year’s event due to the pandemic, the committee decided that they would find a way to hold a talent show this year to entertain the public and to raise funds to support musical education in Carpinteria Unified School District.

In lieu of one night of talent on the Alcazar stage, the committee has turned Carpinteria Valley into its stage and prefilmed performances in outdoor venues that reflect the beauty and culture of the area. With producers Matt Organista and Bryan Cornet of Dream Cast Media Group as cinematographers, directing the lighting, camera, sound equipment and editing, the 2021 Talent Showcase will have a sleek and professional look.

Performers this year include folk artists, comedians, singers, dancers, songwriters, bagpipes and more. Once again, the show will be emceed by Carpinteria’s very own John Palminteri, broadcast journalist for KEYT. On April 17, at 7 p.m., the Talent Showcase will be live at thealcazar.org. While the event is free, donations can be made to further Rotary’s mission to support music education at Carpinteria schools at carpinteriarotary.org.

MISSION POSSIBLE LAUREN GRAF Retired life is far from dull for Carol and Alan Koch. Since 2017, the two have focused their energy on volunteering at the Carpinteria Arts Center. Moving to Carpinteria after 30 years in the Bay Area, the couple quickly acclimated to their new community of volunteers.

“We wanted to create a fulfilling retirement life; I didn’t see myself sitting around or going to the golf course,” Alan said. “Carol and I have this way of being where we want to have commitment and passion for what we do, so volunteering doesn’t even feel like work.”

Alan is the board chair at the arts center, where he uses his business background to help the nonprofit grow. Aside from the arts, Alan has had a lifelong passion for basketball, volunteering as coach for his daughter’s teams and beyond for 13 years.

Carol is a member of the programming committee at the arts center. During pre-pandemic times, she organized monthly tours to local galleries and museums. She is also a member of the American Association of University Women, heavily involved in their girls STEM summer camp as a fundraising coordinator and a dorm mom. To top it off, she also works with the Carpinteria branch of the Women’s Fund of Santa Barbara.

How did you both become involved in local volunteering?

Carol: When we retired, we were involved in the Bay Area and always wanted to focus on community-based efforts and nonprofits. What was wonderful coming to Carpinteria was seeing how many organizations were here, such as Girls Inc. and a Boys and Girls Club.

And then at the arts center, we got to know David Powdrell and a number of other people and we got involved with the capital campaign to buy the adjacent building and create the larger gallery and more public space.

Alan: There are tremendous nonprofit organizations in town. Living for 30 years in the Bay Area, you’re involved in really large types of nonprofits. Here, it’s just so intertwined with the life of the community. You can see almost a direct link to where the work is being done, where the donations go – and it’s just a pleasure. We were also surprised with how welcoming the community was. It didn’t feel like the big city. You would go to one event or another, and you’d run into basically the same people.

How did you identify the arts as an important cause in your volunteering?

Carol: My background is in the arts.

Volunteering in the arts was something we were so drawn to because of our collecting and interest in the arts.

Alan: When we both came down here, it was like starting with a blank canvas. I didn’t want to jump into anything quickly, so we went to a lot of the local events.

But when I got to the arts center, what intrigued me there was its location. Once we built up the gallery, the old Cajun Kitchen and redid the courtyard, it was really an art and event center, and that really intrigued me.

Are there any upcoming volunteer opportunities at the arts center?

Carol: Yes! The gallery is opening which is very exciting. One of the most fun things to do is to be a gallery host, and we’re always looking for gallery hosts.

The other thing is there’s various committees that the community is not aware of, and so if anyone has an interest in getting involved, they can definitely contact the operations manager, Kristina Calkins.

Alan: Basically, volunteers can look forward to all our activities and events that we really need to get back to. Given where we are with Covid, we understand it’s going to be a paced kind of plan, so initially maybe we’ll be able to hold a small gathering in the courtyard with some Covid protocols. Carol and the programming committee are already advertising some in-person classes in the courtyard in May. How has volunteering impacted your lives?

Carol: It has become our lives because of being retired and seeing all of the opportunities. The fun part about volunteering is you only do it if you’re having fun.

Alan and I were doing the food delivery with the Children’s Project.

Alan: We did that every Sunday; we had Shepard Place as our route. We did it for months. Every Sunday, we’d go out there and see the same people, and they were so happy to see us since they were isolated, even before Covid.

Carol: It was really cool! In many ways, a lot of the volunteerism is very self-centered because you have fun! It’s taken over my life in a really great way. It’s just being part of the community, which is sort of the definition of volunteering.

Any final thoughts?

Carol: Yesterday, Pam Werner from the Carpinteria Education Foundation stopped by and we were talking with her about positions in nonprofits and how it’s kind of an oxymoron to say it’s “parttime” because it’s always so much more; it becomes your life. To be successful in life, you can’t tell if your work is play or your play is work.

Muralism announces ribbon cutting ceremony for Boathouse mural

The nonprofit Muralism will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday, April 17 to officially unveil the Ash Avenue Boathouse mural.

Many hands have played a role in completing the mural, created in memory of beloved Carpinteria watercolor artist Ray Cole. Muralism held several community paint days where Carpinterians were invited to make their mark on the mural.

The April 17 ceremony will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. at 101 Ash Ave. RSVP is required, and the event will feature live music by Soluna, words by Carpinteria Mayor Wade Nomura, a Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Department firetruck and a food truck. All attendees are required to wear masks and social distance.

Ira Meyer wins People’s Choice award at “Through the Lens” exhibit

The Carpinteria Arts Center has given the People’s Choice Award for the “Through the Lens” photography exhibit to Ira Meyer for his work, “Gentoo Penguin on Sculpted Iceberg.”

Meyer is a polar region photographer whose pieces are collected worldwide. The award-winning photo was shot from a Zodiac camera while exploring in Dorian Bay, Antarctica. The photograph was then printed on metal. Meyer’s photographs have been published on the cover of the Turkish version of National Geographic’s special edition on climate change, in National Geographic’s Atlas of Natural America, on the cover of Yosemite National Park’s calendar, as the Nature Conservancy’s holiday card, CD and video art, in the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, on several book covers and on a variety of magazines.

The People’s Choice Award was voted on by the public online and in the gallery.

The gallery received the most votes from the public this time compared to any other exhibit. Next up, the gallery will feature a “Together Again” silent auction exhibit that will open on Friday, April 16. The new exhibit will also be available online at carpinteriaartscenter.org and all proceeds will benefit the Carpinteria Arts Center.

Library offers new makers kits and virtual Nathalia event

Starting on April 20, the Carpinteria Branch Library will offer Día maker kits. The library is challenging kids to create their own stories with the supplies provided.

Kids can draw and write in any language they’d like to bring their story to life.

This project is best for kids ages 6-12 and is available while supplies last during the library’s Grab N Go hours.

On Wednesday, April 28, from 4 to 4:45 p.m., the library will host a virtual event with Nathalia. Nathalia engages families in interactive musical performances. From themes like space exploration to cruising down the Amazon River, her energetic songs will have families singing, dancing and even learning a little Spanish in this fun multicultural experience. Subspecies of harbor seals, which live only in the northern hemisphere, are the Eastern Atlantic common seal, the Western Atlantic common seal, the Ungava seals (found in some freshwater lakes of eastern Canada,) the Insular seal of the Hokkaido and Kuril Island area and the Pacific common seal (phoca vitulina richardsi) found on our west coast. The worldwide population of all subspecies of harbor seals is estimated to be in the 400,000 range.

Volunteers continue to see large numbers of people on the bluff trail above the seals and on the beach at both ends of the sanctuary. Trip Advisor lists the seal sanctuary as #2 of 31 Carpinteria “Things to Do” as ranked traveler favorites.

The Carpinteria harbor seal rookery is located immediately east of Casitas Pier, between the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve and Carpinteria State Beach. Please remember not to bring dogs, bicycles or loud voices to view the seals. Harbor seals, when disturbed, may flee and become separated from their pups. Volunteers ask that dogs remain outside the rope area at all times.

The staircase at Tar Pits Beach has been closed since last week after one of the steps leading from the Carpinteria State Campgrounds to the beach was broken. The broken steps are expected to be repaired this week, according to Dena Bellman, district planning Chief/PIO for the Channel Coast District.

Where do I start?

LET’S TALK TEK M I C H A E L AV E R Y A few months ago, I was approached in regard to writing a column on technology for Coastal View News. After pondering the possibility, I decided that with over 50 years in the field of systems and technology, I am uniquely qualified to address the subject and share my knowledge.

I moved to Carpinteria in 2015 after spending 14 years in Hawaii. I was born and raised in a large family in Washington State, and I am the eldest of five boys. I fell in love with Carpinteria the very first day I visited and over the years, I have become active in the local community. I am in the local Lions Club and on the Board of Directors for the Alcazar Theatre. I have also been active in improving a well-known landmark, the Castro House.

I would like to share a little about how I came by the knowledge I will be sharing in my column. It all started with building a crystal radio for a Boy Scout Merit Badge – and I was hooked. In college, I earned a degree in Broadcasting and later, as a young Army Signal Corps Lieutenant, I was the communications

commander for Ft. Huachuca, Arizona.

The years that followed my Army days have included a diverse array of projects and companies that allowed me to refine my appreciation of and expertise in the brave new digital world we live in today – a world that can change in what seems to be the blink of an eye.

I have been involved in some wonderful projects, from mega estates to the largest airplane hangar ever built; and I have worked with great and creative people from techno barons to technophobes.

To introduce my column, I thought it best to present a few questions I recommend you ask when considering a technology purchase and inviting technology into your life. Whether your technology purchase is a totally integrated premise solution or just the purchase of a new smartphone, these questions can help you feel confident in your purchase.

The question, “Where am I now?” also refers to the issue of compatibility and what technology platform you are using and most comfortable with, i.e., Apple, Windows, Android, Alexa, etc. ,

Where do I start?

Do I need it?

This is the first question you should ask before buying any technology and bringing it into your life. Are you tech savvy or does your brain hurt when you think about learning to use something new? Technology can be disruptive or enriching and I recommend you determine a good starting point as you perform due diligence before you buy.

Where am I now?

Where you start your tech journey is an important factor, including your

What do you want to achieve with technology? Will it integrate well with what you are already using, or will it be an outlier? Having to contort yourself or add extra work to your already busy life to use any technology will significantly undermine its value. Technology adheres to the old adage, “use it or lose it.”

This is the big question. Want and need are two totally different sides of the same coin. Having the latest cool gadget is nice, it’s fun and it is a good way to impress your friends; but again, if it does not fit with what you already have and you will not use it, you are wasting your money.

Will it improve my life?

Technology can do one of two things, improve your life or really mess it up.

A reporting party called to report that he was randomly punched in the face by a transient male while walking southbound on Casitas Pass Road. The suspect was identified and arrested for battery.

A transient subject entered a church and stole food and blankets. She stayed inside of the church and brought her belongings inside. Members of the church found her and asked her to leave. When she refused, law enforcement was contacted. The woman was contacted by deputies and refused to leave. Due to entering the building and stealing items, she was arrested for burglary, and she was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

0859 hrs / Battery / Rincon Beach Park

A reporting party called to report that while she was riding her bike on the bike path on the bluffs near Viola Field, a man took a boxing stance and punched her in the upper jaw. The victim fell off her bicycle, however she continued riding.

The description she provided was the same description as the transient who was arrested earlier in the morning.

1112 hrs / Theft / Banner Avenue

A woman left her residence unlocked at 2:30 p.m. She returned at 4 p.m. and noticed two laptops were missing and one of her bedrooms was ransacked.

0336 hrs / Drugs and possession of burglary tools / Via Real and Lambert Road

A vehicle was parked in the roadway just shy of the stop sign at the above-mentioned intersection. Further inspection showed the vehicle was occupied by a male and a female who were both passed out. After waking the pair and checking their welfare, a records check revealed that the man was on probation with full terms for drugs and possession of burglary tools. A search of the vehicle and persons led to the discovery of numerous burglary tools including a police scanner, binoculars and prying tools as well as drugs and paraphernalia such as meth (7.3g), heroin (1.8g), used and loaded needles, used meth pipes and numerous prescription pills. Both parties were arrested and booked without incident.

Monday, April 5

1155 hrs / Prowling / Cramer Circle

A man called to report an unknown subject was prowling around his property, knocked on his door and was asking irrelevant questions. He asked the subject to leave and called law enforcement. The subject then stopped at the neighbor’s house on the same property and was asking the owner of the house questions about family being home. Deputies arrived on the scene and were told the subject walked toward 7-Eleven. Deputies contacted the subject, who appeared to be under the influence and possibly was in possession of stolen property. He had no relation and no business being on the reporting party’s property. Both property owners signed a citizen’s complaint form for prowling. The subject was arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Two subjects were contacted in a parked vehicle. A meth bong was observed in plain view. During a probable cause search of the vehicle and its two occupants, various narcotics and narcotics paraphernalia were located. Both subjects were released with citations.

1113 hrs / Burglary / 5200 block 6th Street

1740 hrs / Warrant / 4200 block Carpinteria Avenue

A reporting party called to report a suspicious vehicle suspected of being involved in a previous theft parked in the area. A man and a woman were contacted sitting in the car. A records check revealed the man had two misdemeanor warrants out of Ventura County, which they would extradite on. He was arrested and booked at Santa Barbara County Jail.

2152 hrs / Drugs / Bluffs Nature Preserve at Bailard Avenue

While parked at the bluffs after dark, a vehicle was observed driving into the closed parking lot and driving to the western end of the lot. A male got out and walked to some bushes. A vehicle investigation was conducted on the vehicle, occupied by three people. Another male stated he had to urinate and defecate. Further investigation revealed two adults, both under 21, sitting in the back who were in possession of open containers of marijuana. The driver was also in possession of an open container of marijuana and admitted to having meth (1.1g) in the car. A probable cause search led to the discovery of the meth in the center console. All four subjects were cited for their violations.

0112 hrs / Drugs / Via Real and South Padaro Lane

Deputies responded to the area on a report of a male yelling for help. Deputies contacted a man in the area whose clothes were soaked, and he was covered in sand.

The man, who was on parole, appeared to be suffering from drug-induced paranoia, claiming he was being chased by an unknown male and came to the area from Goleta. Although he first denied using illegal drugs, he finally admitted to smoking meth about an hour prior to contact. Given the cold weather, his clothes soaked in water and the fact that he had no one to care for him, he was arrested for being under the influence of drugs and booked at Santa Barbara County Jail without incident.

1944 hrs / Under the influence / 800 block Linden Avenue

A man was contacted as he was parked perpendicular to the driveway entrance of Smart & Final. He appeared to be under the influence of an unknown substance.

It seems he was heavily under the influence of marijuana. He was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

2206 hrs / Drugs / 4100 block Via Real

A traffic stop was conducted on a blue Chevy Avalanche for vehicle code violations. The driver was the sole occupant.

Three arrested in double homicide

Three Carpinteria men were arrested last week in connection with the Jan. 3 Santa Barbara double homicide.

On April 7, at about 8:30 a.m., members of the Santa Barbara Police Department (SBPD) and Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office (SBSO) arrested three suspects, all residents of Carpinteria, for the homicides of Angel Castillo and Omar Montiel-Hernandez.

Angel Eduardo Varela, 26, Oscar Martin Trujillo-Gutierrez, 26, and Emilio Perez, 18, all Carpinteria residents, were arrested on warrants for murder with special circumstances for a criminal gang-related murder, among other crimes.

SBPD and SBSO SWAT teams served warrants related to the investigation at 1094 Cramer Road, Unit B, and 1097 Cramer Road in Carpinteria, and a residence under construction at 2305 Golden Gate Avenue in Summerland.

SBPD Chief Bernard Melekian stated that the arrests represented the culmination of weeks of planning and investigative work. “While we recognize that nothing we have done here can bring back the lives that were lost,” said Mele-

kian, “detectives never stopped working on this case, and hopefully prevented future acts of retaliation which, lead in turn, to more tragedy. As a society we must continue to work with the young people in our community to ensure that no more lives are lost.”

The Santa Barbara Police Department continues to communicate with the family of the victims and express condolences for their loss. “Angel Castillo loved his family, especially his little brother,” the SBPD stated from information they gathered from family and friends. “(Angel) dreamed one day of owning his own autobody shop. His loss has had a big impact on everyone that knew him. “ “Omar Montiel-Hernandez was a great brother and always looked out for his younger siblings,” said SBPD. “When Omar turned 18, he told his mother it was his turn to start taking care of her. Omar would often tell his mother, ‘La vida es tan bonita’ (Life is beautiful).”

Varela, Trujillo-Gutierrez and Perez will be booked at Santa Barbara County Jail where they will be held without bail.

The investigation is ongoing.

A consensual search of his vehicle and person led to the discovery of about 2 grams of meth and a meth pipe containing a usable amount of meth. He was also driving without a valid driver’s license and his vehicle did not have an interlock device as required by the DMV. His vehicle registration was also altered. He was cited and released, and the vehicle was towed.

While leaving the station, a suspicious vehicle was observed in the west parking lot of the Carpinteria Police Station/City Hall building. Contact was made with the occupant, who stated he was lost due to the detours from Highway 101. His vehicle was searched due to possession of marijuana and he was found in possession of a meth pipe and over 20 grams of meth. He was cited and released.

A man was contacted due to having an obstructed license plate. A records check revealed he had a suspended license. He was cited.

A driver and a passenger were contacted while parked in a handicap parking stall, not displaying a handicap placard.

What appeared to be a meth pipe was seen in plain view. A search was conducted and yielded more paraphernalia. The driver was cited and released.

A local transient set fire to his pants after taking them off.

A male and a female were contacted after being reported yelling in the area.

A records check showed the man had an active arrest warrant. A search incident to arrest revealed methamphetamine in his pocket. He was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Carpinteria’s golden era of medley relay

The 1930s was the decade of the Great Depression, FDR, The New Deal and the Dust Bowl. It would seem the least likely time to spawn outstanding athletes at a small school like Carpinteria High School, yet it was the era when some of the most accomplished and record-holding athletes competed for CHS, including Gibby Martin, Gordon Milne, Jim Peterson, Peter Franco, Phil Olds, Tom Reid and these four: Walter Kendrick, Ralph Wood, Philip Bates and Dale Schuyler.

Kendrick, Wood, Bates and Schuyler, who were also teammates on the school’s football team, would become a four-member medley relay team that beat many bigger schools in the state while also setting new track and field records.

Coached by Dr. Irving A. Mather, the four made a name for themselves on May 11, 1935, at the Ninth Annual Fresno West Coast Relays by winning the Medley Relay (440 yards, 880 yards, 1,320 yards and the mile) and setting a new meet record of 10:54.0. Carpinteria was one of 32 teams in the meet which included high schools from San Francisco, Oakland and the San Joaquin Valley. Carpinteria had 11 other schools to compete against in the race.

The Fresno Bee wrote, “Little Carpinteria High School proved the meet’s dark horse with a fine time of 10:54 for the medley relay. Kendrick, Wood, Bates and Schuyler, running in that order, took the lead and held it, all runners being perfectly timed for their part in the event.

Bakersfield dogged along in second place most of the race but could offer no standing challenge to Carpinteria. The old mark for this race was 11 minutes 3 seconds, set by Visalia in 1934.”

From the San Francisco Chronicle: “Kendrick, as the leadoff man, in the 440, had a hard time getting the lead, but after the last turn, easily overtook the Visalia runner and gave Wood a five-yard advantage. Then all that Ralph did was to run the best 880 in the south, the time being 2 flat. This gave Phil Bates a 25-yard lead and he then increased this slightly.

Running the final stage of the relay, Dale Schuyler jogged the mile in 4:34 and led the Bakersfield opponent almost a quarter-lap behind at the finish.”

CHS Hall of Famer Walt Kendrick went on to compete in football and track at Fresno State. He flew A-26s and A-20s in combat missions over Italy with the 47th Bomber Group during World War II. His decorations included the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star with eight clusters and the Silver Star. He worked for 40 years as a sales representative for the Standard Oil Company.

A member of both the Carpinteria High School and the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Halls of Fame, Ralph Wood, who earned 16 varsity letters, was the first Carpinteria athlete to win a state championship by capturing the 880-yard run at the 1935 California State Track and Field Meet held at Ratcliffe Stadium, Fresno, on Saturday, May 25, in a time of 1:57.6. While a student at Santa Barbara State Teachers College, he was awarded the Robertson Trophy as the school’s decathlon champion. In the early 1950s

he worked for the Pasadena and Long Beach police departments. He served as the athletic director at Boys Town USA from 1956 to 1970.

A 1940 graduate of Occidental College, Phil Bates became a Naval flying instructor and was commissioned an Ensign in March of 1942. Four months later, at age 25, he was killed on July 13, 1942 in a midair collision with another Navy training plane near Cecil Field near the Jacksonville Naval Air Station. The incident resulted in the death of the two pilots and two aviator cadets. The cadet in Bates’ plane was Remsen Crego of Yeadon, Pennsylvania.

He was a starting lineman for Dartmouth in the famous fifth down football game versus Cornell, played on Nov. 16, 1940.

Four-sport athlete Dale Schuyler, lettering in football, basketball, baseball and track, earned his entry into the Carpinteria Hall of Fame. In 1934, he won the 1320 in 3:15.6, becoming the CIF SS champion.

That time broke Louis Zamperini’s (subject of the book and movie “Unbroken”) record set the year before in the time of 3:17.7. Dale placed second in the mile at the 1935 California State Track and Field to Elmer Bayer of Paso Robles in an estimated time of 4:31.0. Along with Wood’s win and Dale’s second place finish, Carpinteria tied for seventh place in the meet. The Boys Frosh/Soph 1600 meters Russell Cup Perpetual Trophy is named after Schuyler. Following high school, he became a teammate of Zamperini on the

USC Trojan track and field team. After two years at USC, he joined the US Navy and served during WWII. Returning to Carpinteria, he worked for Carpinteria Motor Transport for 20 years.

Of the 33 graduates of the class of 1935, these four outstanding athletes made their mark in Warrior Athletics record books. Considering the tough economic situation in the country, their achievements were remarkable. They all displayed a faithful commitment to teamwork and a work ethic that led to championship performances.

For readers who are track enthusiasts, the current record at CHS for the distance medley is 10:18.51, set at the Arcadia Invitational on Saturday, April 7, 1990. The runners all ran their personal record: Greg Ehlert, 1200m (3:16.9), BJ Shamblin, 400m (52.1), Beto Puita, 800m (1:56.6), and Coley Candaele, 1600m (4:12.9). Carpinteria finished second to Venice High School, whose time of 10.16.50 was the national leader. Carpinteria’s time was the second best nationally. Coley also ran the 800m at that meet, running a national best and a school record of 1:51.19.

Football concludes spring season, celebrates senior class The Carpinteria Varsity Football team played its last spring game of the season on Saturday, April 10, dropping a 48-7 decision at Santa Paula.

“The proud football cohort endured two separate periods of quarantine that cancelled both scheduled home games and senior night for footballers and cheerleaders. Without fail, the Warriors responded positively and made the very most out of each opportunity they had,” said athletic director Pat Cooney, noting the challenges that the team faced in their

shortened, two-game season.

“It was a great way to finish the high school career of eight seniors,” said coach Mario Robinson. “Carpinteria High School would like to thank Seniors Justin Rogers, Junior Najera, Diego Mendez, Isaac Castillo, Cristian Quintero, Irving Garcia, Alexis Serrano and Colby Keiser for playing through a tough season. We appreciate the seniors and all the football players for sticking with the program through a difficult time.”

Track and field shows promise despite losses to Santa Barbara, San Marcos The Carpinteria High School Track and Field team suffered a tough loss to the Santa Barbara High School Dons at Peabody Stadium on April 7, but the meet was not without bright spots for the Warriors.

Vincent Rinaldi continued his early-season sprinting prowess, winning the 100 and 200-meter events with times of 11.15 and 22.29, respectively. His time of 22.29 is a new personal best for Rinaldi, and a CHS senior class record.

Warrior Mateo Handall faced off against Blaise Winston of Santa Barbara in the 400-meter event, replicating their first hard-fought duel at the start of the season, and it was another outstanding race. The two runners were never more than a few meters apart, and Winston ultimately took the victory by two thousandths of a second. It was a PR time of 52.16 for both runners.

Tristin Cravens continued his improvement in the hurdles. He won the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 20.35. He also finished second in the 300-meter race, falling to Winston with a PR of 46.15.

Fatima Cervantes won the high jump event, jumping 4-10 for the third meet in row.

Ainslee Alexander was victorious in the triple jump with a distance of 31-7.25. She also finished second in the long jump. Jenna Stadler was the Warriors’ other winner with a 55-9 toss in the discus.

On Saturday, April 10, the Warriors fell to San Marcos at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium, with both teams again producing strong early season marks despite the loss.

For the boys, Vincent Rinaldi set PRs on both sprints. His 200-meter time of 22.05 is a new school record for Carpinteria. He also won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.04. Rinaldi is improving his starting block technique and it is paying dividends for the senior, coach Van Latham said.

the race, but did set a new PR of 51.40. Justin Hess of San Marcos won the event with a PR time of 51.30.

Esai Vega had a nice comeback after a sub-par performance earlier in the week, Latham noted. He set PRs in both throws to win both events. He threw 41-0 in the shot put and 127-5 in the discus. Tristan Cravens was a double winner for the Warriors in the hurdles races.

For the Warrior girls, the field eventers led the way. Sophomore Ainslee Alexander won both the long and triple jumps. Her distance of 14-10.75 won the long jump and she took the triple jump at 31-9. The sophomore has jumped consistently well this season and is poised to make a breakthrough soon.

Fatima Cervantes cleared 4-10 to win the high jump. This is the fourth meet in a row that she has cleared that height. She tried to make a breakthrough by moving the bar to 5-2 and showed strong attempts but had no clearances. Kate Cooney was the other Warrior to earn a victory against the Royals, winning the 1600 meters.

CIF moves ahead with Section Championships for Season 2 Team Sports

Due to recent changes to the California Department of Public Health Guidelines for Youth Sports, CIF Commissioner of Athletics Rob Wigod announced on April 12 that the CIF is prepared to go forward with Section Championships for Season 2 team sports for baseball, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, softball, team tennis and boys volleyball.

CIF also noted that they are actively working on approving competitive play in golf, swimming/diving, individual tennis and track and field. CIF hopes to soon secure approvals from various county health departments to ensure that they can conduct championship events involving student-athletes from all eight counties within the Southern Section.

Section Championships for individual wrestling will not be able to move forward, as it is classified as a High-Contact Indoor Sport and both preparation and competition time have been limited all year.

Baseball falls to Bishop Diego

The Bishop Diego Cardinals visited Carpinteria High School’s John Calderwood Field and delivered a 12-5 blow to the Warriors’ perfect early season record. Senior righties Ashton Pelly and Miles Souza toed the slab for their respective teams and an early seesaw battle turned into a one-sided win for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals took advantage of Warrior miscues and tallied a first inning run.

The Warriors responded with a leadoff double by Luke Lounsbury and a triple by Souza. Hunter Garcia rapped a line drive single to left to score Souza. The Warriors held the lead through the second inning, but the Cardinals scored in each inning from then on and ran away with the win. Erich Goebel paced the Warrior attack with a single and his first homer of the year.

“The Warriors are working through some youth and early season jitters. We need to fit some puzzle pieces around our solid leaders,” said coach Pat Cooney. “(It’s) difficult to work through when facing a well-coached and seasoned Bishop team. They have some early season game experience and played better than we did today. In the end, we were grateful for the chance to play and wish the Cards the best going forward.”
