Carpinteria pediatrician Margaret Dodds named Public Citizen of the Year

Beloved local pediatrician Margaret “Peggy” Dodds has been named Public citizen of the Year by the National Association of Social Workers, california chapter, Santa Barbara Unit. The annual award commemorates an individual who has made significant contributions to an area or population of concern, such as atrisk or vulnerable populations, in Santa Barbara county.

Dodds is the fulltime pediatrician at carpinteria Health care center, a county public health clinic offering comprehensive perinatal services, family planning and family practice to an average 800 patients a month. When she joined the clinic 10 years ago, she brought 20 years of experience as a pediatrician with an M.D. from University of colorado and a freshly obtained master’s in counseling and psychology from Pacifica Graduate institute. Her experience and expertise are matched by her warmth and friendliness, not to mention her effortless style— marine blue streaks in her long hair and an ever-present Lego watch that goes with everything.

She made her bones in a private practice in Salt Lake city, Utah, not far from where she grew up in Denver. After noticing a paucity of mental health services in Salt Lake, she pursued a masters that would equip her with more skills in mental health care. While studying at Pacifica, she was set up on a blind date with an oncologist and psychotherapist named Marty Walker. The two fell in love,

and not too long after, Dodds moved to carpinteria to live with her new husband.

Looking for work in pediatric medicine, she started filling in at the Carpinteria clinic, before long, she was the fulltime pediatrician, where she has been ever since, never looking back. “i love working with the families. i get to laugh a lot, every day. The kids make me laugh,” said Dodds. “And, it feels like what we do at the clinic really makes a difference for families in carpinteria.”

On receiving the award, she said, “it is lovely to be honored by a group of social workers who i admire so much.”

Barbara Finch, community network director for county social services, is not shy about the waves Dodds is making in public health, “You know how butterflies can never see their wings? They move through life thinking they’re caterpillars and need other people to tell them about their wings. That’s Peggy. She’s authentic. it’s clear that she’s coming from a place of caring and partnership.” She’ll “walk the bridge” towards another person to understand their perspective in order to better serve families. A pediatrician who champions integrated mental health services is rare and valuable, noted Finch. in recent years, Dodds has partnered with Maria chesley, executive director of carpinteria children’s Project, as the pediatric representative on the steering committee of the Adverse childhood experiences (Aces) program in carpinteria.

The program launched this month and is a model that the county hopes to later scale throughout the county.

We all took turns just sitting with her, holding her hand.

To watch these women—who had taken a leave from their lives to support their friend—it was a small sliver of light in a very, very dark time.”

On the other side of support, being able to support a friend in their darkest hour, was a powerful realization for Clark.

“For those of you who feel uncomfortable asking for support, remember, there is a give and a take. It’s important to give because that’s what makes a village. And, it’s important to take, because that’s what makes you part of the tribe.”

Women of Inspiration also honored three local women for their work supporting the community and Girls Inc.: Maeve Juarez, wildland fire specialist for Montecito Fire Department; Gail Persoon, Girls Inc. board member; and Emilie Neumann, program officer at the Weingart Foundation. Girls Inc. scholarship winners were Monica Delgado, Jazmin Martinez, Jazmin Vivero, Alexa Silva and Karla Marin. Honorary chairs were Nini Seaman and Sandra Tyler.

Once again this year, the three young women who took the stage to emcee Girls Inc.’s Women of Inspiration luncheon did so with the poise and confidence that event attendees have come to expect from the organization’s Eureka! standouts. The emcees, a.k.a. Girls of Inspiration—Alitza Gonzalez, Laura Flores and Monica Delgado—represented a collective 18 years of Girls Inc. experience, and nodded proudly at their sisters, announcing that 100 percent of Eureka! graduates are pursuing college degrees. The April 8 event was framed by the theme of “support,” donations, yes, but also meaningful interpersonal relationships that support women and girls throughout their lives.

“Today we honor those who support and live our mission,” said Flores.

Delgado, who attends Carpinteria Middle School, also won the prestigious National Eighth Grade Scholarship. In accepting her award, she said that Girls Inc. is her “second home,” and a place where she feels comfortable expressing herself. Learning to express herself with confidence was a struggle for Delgado, who before starting at Girls Inc., had a tendency to “stay quiet and safe” in the classroom and throughout her daily activities. Through supportive programming at Girls Inc., Delgado was guided to ask herself, “What’s stopping me?” Eventually, “My voice didn’t shake anymore, it came out loud and clear.”

This year, Delgado ran for CMS class president, with the confidence that she had the ability and skill to do the job. “I am a leader, I am a role model and my voice does have power,” she said. Despite losing in a close race—by about 20 votes—Delgado said she was proud that she put herself out there, and moreover, “I have the perseverance to get up and try again because of Girls Inc.” The keynote address was given by 2018 Inspirational Speaker Jessica Clark, who joked about her own tears, but ended her speech to hardly a dry eye in the house.

Clark is the co-owner of five restaurants, including Corktree Cellars, PeeBee & Jays and Rincon Brewery. “Support is something that I am really, really familiar with,” she began, describing a solid foundation of support from family, school and friends throughout her youth, and during her most challenging times in adolescence and adulthood.

“In 2003, I married a great man. A wellloved golden boy of our town,” she said.

“After battling brain and spinal cancer in his early 20s, he was living a full life 10 years later.” But a month after they were engaged, doctors found a new tumor. After he passed, in those first days of grief, Clark received around-the-clock support from her friends and family. “Everywhere I turned, someone was there offering me support. I never felt alone. I was lost, but I wasn’t alone.”

Clark later received community support when seven months after opening her first restaurant on Linden Avenue, Corktree Cellars, the recession hit in November of 2008. Friends rallied to keep the bistro tables full and the restaurant open. Not long after, her first daughter Harper was born, and Clark experienced postpartum depression. Her mother and sister supported her throughout her recovery.

Then, last year, the “most unthinkable, terrible thing” happened to Clark’s good friend Terry; her son Marky Meza was killed in a mass shooting at Borderline Bar in Thousand Oaks. “What do you do for someone who is encountering

Time for an honest conversation

Last week, the CVN published a letter from Tina and Greg Frontado (“Cease and desist,” Vol. 25, No. 27) that made several untrue and unsubstantiated allegations about Concerned Carpinterians (CC).

In fact, CC is a grass roots organization birthed out of the collective distress of residents and businesses concerned about the many troubling negative impacts of mass cultivation of cannabis in the Carpinteria Valley. In the space of just weeks, more than 100 residents and business owners, troubled by the arrival of the billion-dollar cannabis industry, have asked to join our ranks-—and more do so every day. In fact, CC is one of the many groups that is part of the Santa Barbara County Coalition for Responsible Cannabis (SBCRC), an umbrella organization of residents, vintners, avocado growers and schools with members in all five districts.

Ms. Frontado is welcome to have another point of view and to be an enthusiast for the Cannabis industry. What Ms. Frontado blatantly failed to mention in her letter to the editor is that she is the CEO of KopSun, a company that promotes the cannabis lifestyle. This lack of disclosure is misleading to the public. In a second letter published in the same issue of CVN, written by Terra Stephan (“Cannabis boogeyman”), there is no mention that she works for Cresco Labs, one of the largest cannabis companies in the world.

To have an honest conversation, we must have full disclosure.

For the record, CC does not own or use any drones nor engage in any behavior that is “potentially unlawful.” We will, however, continue to respond to community complaints and monitor cannabis activity in our area to ensure compliance with existing laws, and to seek remedies for residents and businesses that are experiencing the many negative impacts from the cannabis industry that affect our lifestyle in the Carpinteria Valley.

Ms. Soto, Aliso School librarian is a great librarian because she is funny and nice. She has made me a better reader by always encouraging me to read more. She is always pushing me beyond my limits.

Ms. Soto is so important to Aliso because we have over 50 people in Battle of the Books because of her—that’s saying something. Battle of the Books is important to me because it gives me a chance to share my knowledge about reading with other people. Mrs. Soto has to stay at Aliso because everybody, and I mean everybody, loves her so much.

Business as usual

After reading and listening to cannabis complaints for over a year now, one wonders what has changed in Carpinteria to inspire such opposition to growing a plant on greenhouse farms. Here are a few things I know have changed. Cannabis farms use no pesticides. In my opinion, this is a positive. Santa Barbara County planners are putting all the farms under a microscope and requiring that every inch is brought up to code. This is an appropriate action. Cannabis needs only small vans for delivery; no refrigerator trucks. This is another positive.

Cannabis farms are thriving, whereas cut flowers were unsustainable. Our ag sector is healthy again. Ag keeps Carp rural. Thank goodness! Cannabis farmers have been part of major local events like the California Avocado Festival, Lions Club Festival of Trees and Carpinteria Rotary Club Talent Showcase, to name a few. Many of Carp’s Cannabis growers are long-standing members of the community. They care about Carpinteria.

It seems that changes have occurred in Carpinteria, positive ones. As an agricultural community, we will see plants come and go—walnuts to lemons to avocados, cut flowers to cannabis flowers—but let’s not forget about the importance of a

healthy ag sector. It’s a big part of what maintains the way of life we cherish. If the ag belt goes away from lack of support, hello condos, hello Orange County.

no excuse for glyphosate

The weed killer glyphosate, as used on school grounds, does not make me comfortable that the schools employing this have the best interest in the health of their students. It should be the responsibility of school districts to evaluate what goes on their properties and evidently, this is not the case. Several herbicides, besides killing weeds are associated with adverse impacts on mammalian physiology. Glyphosate has been associated with a variety of neuro degenerative pathological conditions including autism and Parkinson’s. The list of adverse impacts from herbicides on humans, in spite of industry claims, are numerous. Needless damage to children is really inexcusable, especially with the level of information on adverse effects that we possess today.

Local youth need school library services

As a Carpinteria High School (CHS) student, it shocked and angered me when I heard news of how the school library would be affected by budget cuts.

I understand that budget cuts are vital to keeping the school running, but at what expense? The CHS library is a vital resource for students and their learning.

Reducing the number of hours that the library is open does not benefit the students in any way; in fact, it is extremely detrimental. Students collectively gather in the library as a safe space to read, do homework, research, converse and so much more. Not only is the library a place for learning, but it also provides a place for students to go if they feel outcasted from everyone else. It also provides a breath of fresh air for those who want to get away from the stress of school.

Many students come to CHS from low income families and do not have outside access to learning resources. Having the library open before school hours, and even after school provides disadvantaged youth with the opportunity to use the resources in the library allocated for that exact purpose. Students who are falling behind in class have the opportunity to stay after school and be tutored in the library. We also are given the opportunity to read independently. In an article published in “Scholastic” in November 2018, the editors wrote, “By reading, students learn the vocabulary they need to effectively communicate their thoughts, ideas, hopes and dreams to others and actively engage in their community.” Cutting back on school library hours cuts back on all the reading and learning that the library offers to students The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions, or IFLA, is an international, non-profit, independent organization that works to spread word of the importance of school libraries.

Does the school exist to serve youth, or do youth exist to serve the school? I am extremely disappointed that the school board even considers cutting down on library hours. If it were a minor cut to the total hours, I would understand; this, however, is not the case. Every day, the library is open 11 hours for students. With the new budget cut, it would take away 7 precious hours from students, reducing its availability to a measly 4 hours.

What happened to the confidence that the school board had in our libraries just a few weeks ago?

As a rising college student, this change does not affect me, but hundreds of others will be impacted. How much is our education worth? How well will students do in school next year without access to after-school tutoring? It seems to me that the quality of learning doesn’t matter as much as I thought it did. Save our education.

Raymond Arthur Cole 9/30/1930 – 3/23/2019

Ray was born in London, England on Aug. 30, 1930 and died in Santa Barbara, California on March 23, 2019. He came to the United States in 1946 with his mother and stepfather. Ray graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in journalism. He worked in the world of advertising, ending his career as the Director of Sales and Marketing for Sunkist. Ray served in the U.S. Army 11th Battalion from 1950–1953.

Ray met Mary Jane Larsen while living in Seattle and they married in 1954. They settled in Southern California where they raised their family, moving to Carpinteria in retirement. Ray and Mary had many dear friends, traveled worldwide and were up for any adventure, including square dancing!

A talented artist, Ray was known for his detailed watercolors of life in Carpinteria. His book, “The Delights of Carpinteria,” included many of these paintings. He was commissioned by many in Carpinteria to paint scenes personal to them. He was a lover of words and completed crossword puzzles (the hard ones!) until his death. He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, bird watching from his living room windows and playing cards.

Always active in the community where he and his family lived, over the years Ray served on the Wiseburn and Conejo Valley Unified School Boards and as the president of the Silver Sands Village Mobile Home Park Board of Directors.

Ray was predeceased by his wife Mary and is survived by his daughter Tracy Serrato (husband Noe) of Maricopa, Arizona, son Greg Cole (wife Beth Fairbairn) of Napa, California, his grandchildren Brandi, Sophia and Larsen, his brother Clifford Cole of England, sister-in-law Alice Larsen of Carpinteria and the rest of his beloved family by marriage. Ray leaves behind friends from all stages of his life; he had the gift of striking up a conversation with anyone he met.

Ray’s family is forever grateful to the dedicated caregivers and friends whose assistance and love allowed Ray to live independently in his home by the sea until his final illness.

If you would like to honor Ray with a donation, please consider The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center or Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation. A celebration of Ray’s life will be held at a later date.

Jeremy “Jerry” David Paley 9/22/1946 – 1/26/2019

Jeremy David Paley, beloved husband to Wendy Robin Paley, and father to Rebecca Paley and Sheri Paley, left this world too soon on Jan. 26, 2019, after a heroic battle with cancer. He is survived by his two brothers Jeffrey and Jonathan, his wife Wendy, daughters Rebecca and Sheri, and many other loving family members. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army from 1969–1971, prior to his 30 years of service at the Montecito Water District as Business Manager/Water Conservation Specialist, among other roles. He will be sorely missed by all who were privileged enough to know him. He will join his parents Jerold and Josephine Paley in Heaven and be at peace.

At the final wishes of Jerry, no formal service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to send donations to the American Cancer Society, City of Hope and/or the Sansum-Ridley Tree Cancer Foundation.

Jack Thompson 3/23/1931 – 4/2/2019

Jack Thompson, family man, fireman, loyal sailor in the US Navy, left this life on April 2, surrounded by his family.

Born in Ogden, Utah, on March 23, 1931, he moved with his family to Los Angeles where he graduated from El Monte High School. He joined the Navy during the Korean conflict, serving honorably on the destroyer (tin can) USS Orleck.

After the Navy, he met and married Colleen Birch in 1953. They moved to Summerland, eventually moving to Carpinteria on Jay Street, where he lived until his death.

He proudly served his community as a firefighter, retiring as Battalion chief in 1983. He and Colleen enjoyed their retirement for 20 years until she passed in 2003. He was also preceded in death by his son, Edward.

Jack met and married Nancy Hakala in 2007, laughing and travelling together often. Jack is survived by his wife Nancy, his daughters and Nancy’s son and daughter, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, and their spouses who will miss him dearly.

A graveside service will be held at Carpinteria Cemetery on April 20, at 2 p.m. A memorial BBQ will be held on June 9 at Toro Canyon Park at noon.

Donations may be made in his name to Serenity House, Santa Barbara Hospice or Visiting Nurses.

Council approves city hire of cannabis licensing consultants, CUSD to sell Bailard properties

In a 5-0 vote, Carpinteria City Council voted to enter into an agreement with Hinderliter, de Llamas and Associates, also known as HdL Companies, to act as a consultant with the development and implementation of the city’s commercial cannabis operator’s licensing program.

The city has approved commercial cannabis businesses dealing with manufacturing, distribution and testing and is considering allowing non-storefront delivery businesses but has no intention to allow cultivation nor retail store fronts.

The council’s unanimous vote allows the city to hire HdL as a consultant to help navigate the creation of its operator’s licensing program. HdL will provide

consultant services in several areas, including to provide subject matter expertise and technical support; application development and support; cost recovery and fee analysis; and tax strategy and ballot measure development. One of the big decisions confronting the council is whether or not to create a local cannabis tax to generate revenue for the city. HdL will aid the city in exploring its options to best reflect the needs of the community.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention month. According to the 2017 Children’s Scorecard published by the Department of Social Services of Santa Barbara, our county’s Child Welfare Service (CWS) receives around 5,000 reports of suspected child abuse or neglect each year. CWS investigates approximately 3,200 of those cases; the rate of investigations is similar throughout regions of our large county. The good news is that since 2008, the percentage of reports that have met the legal definition of abuse or neglect has dropped from 25 percent to 11 percent, or from 933 children in 2008 to 541 children in 2015.

The statistics are unsettling to say the least. Abuse and neglect are more frequent for our youngest children. The most frequently substantiated cases are infants under 12 months. Children with disabilities are also abused or neglected more frequently. Of the types of child abuse and neglect found, general neglect is consistently the most common. Neglect is the failure to provide adequate food, clothing, shelter, medical care or supervision. Locally, over half of substantiated cases are general or severe neglect, followed by caretaker absence or incapacity.

Child neglect often reflects the needs of the parent—it is often rooted in substance abuse, domestic violence or mental illness, and is best addressed by working with the parent. Most of the families CWS works with receive support with parenting skills, mental health and substance abuse treatment.

CWS still removes children from their custodial parents when necessary, but much more often the family has an opportunity to learn, get stronger and healthier, and provide a better home and upbringing for their children. Since 2005, Santa Barbara County CWS began referring families whose cases did not result in substantiated claims to community agencies. Families are referred to CALM and Family Resource Centers like the one at the Carpinteria Children’s Project.

The Social Services Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Hotline can be reached at 1-800-367-0166, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. After hours, on weekends or holidays, and whenever a child is in immediate danger, call 911.

Families are different and will experience what shows up in their lives in different ways. Still, we know that caring relationships and the basics—healthy food, quality sleep and exercise—are essential to a child’s healthy development.

All of us parents are learning, particularly because just as soon as we adjust to one stage in a child’s development, they are on to the next. directed to research annexing the parcels to the city of Carpinteria.

The land in question is two parcels of property located at 1101 and 1103 Bailard Ave. that was acquired by the School District in the late 1990s with plans to build a school. The proposed school was not built, and the district school board voted to sell the property. According to state law, the land must first be offered to other public agencies to fulfill other public needs. The Santa Barbara Housing Authority has shown interest in the land for mixed affordable- and market-rate housing developments.

Councilmember Al Clark initially agreed with the Housing Authority’s intent, stating: “I believe that developing affordable housing on that land is probably the best use of that land for the purposes of the city.” But he also brought up concerns about traffic, density and the city’s ability to enact control over these issues if the land is not yet annexed to the city.

The council discussed the option to consider purchasing the land so that the city can exert more control over future developments, but councilmembers ultimately decided that it is not in the best interest of the city financially at this time. Both City Manager Dave Durflinger and Mayor Nomura expressed hope that

an open dialogue and working together with the county will help align both government’s interests—if the county does purchase the land.

New ad hoc committees created

The council nominated Councilmembers Roy Lee and Fred Shaw to serve on the ad hoc Library Services Committee with Councilman Gregg Carty as an alternate and Shaw and Clark to serve on the ad hoc District Elections Committee.

Creation of these ad hoc committees came at the request of the council at the Jan. 26 Annual Work Plan meeting where both committees were suggested in order to help potential changes in these areas in the future. Since the city of Santa Barbara no longer operates the Goleta, Buellton and Solvang branch libraries, there has been a predicted increase of expenses in the Carpinteria Branch Library, the new committee will work cooperatively with the various involved and interested parties as well as help guide the council on future decisions regarding the library.

Meanwhile, the District Elections Committee will address the city’s transition from at-large to district-based elections.

Disturbances

A turkey vulture scared many into the water. A high tide rescue of a walker who was trapped by waves did not disturb seals. There was an unknown disturbance. A helicopter flew by and disturbed several and a large group of children with much energy disrupted many seals.

Natural History Notes

Harbor Seals haul out at the rookery in Carpinteria. Harbor Seals usually are always in the same rookery location. They haul out—get out of the water to rest—50 percent of the time, in loosely organized groups. These groups include both sexes and all ages. Unlike most pinnipeds, adult harbor seals are usually solitary and rarely interact other than to mate. They generally do not touch each other when hauled out. They maintain a space between them of a few feet or more. If touched by another seal, they respond with growling, snorting, flipper waving, head thrusting and even biting. Young harbor seals interact with each other and stay away from the adults. Harbor seals become less tolerant of close contact as they mature. They will haul out at any time of the day or night, but length of time is dependent on the tide height.

Maternal Health Panel

On Friday, April 12, at 6:30 p.m. there will be a Maternal Health Panel hosted by the fourth annual International Cesarean Awareness Network in Santa Barbara, at the Unitarian Church. Moderated and hosted by local doula and ICAN co-director, Kimberly Zuleger, the event will also feature local mom Carly Bass, on the “mom panel” discussing her successful vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), and her journey to find a provider that would support her. “Us”

Before filming “Us,” writer/director Jordan Peele had his cast watch certain horror movies so they could all be on the same page. They included “The Shining,” “Funny Games,” “Let the Right One in,” “The Birds” and “The Sixth Sense.” These movies are all super atmospheric. They make impending doom visceral and pervasive, like a thick, noxious fog settling in around you, enveloping you, obscuring your vision and filling your lungs. These movies are horrifying in part because the malevolence they portray is readily perceptible and yet at the same time mysterious, irrational and utterly unknowable. It’s not supernatural—at least not always—but it sure isn’t natural either.

And that’s how “Us” starts out.

A little girl in pigtails with a perfect, ruby-red candy apple in hand. A stormy night on an eerie beachside boardwalk with her inattentive, bickering parents. Glittering lights. Dark corners. Screaming rollercoaster-riders.

Carnies. Freaks.

And yet Adelaide Wilson (Madison Curry), innocent and naïve as she is, doesn’t perceive these poisonous vapors settling in around her. As her drunken father distracts himself with a carnival game, she wanders off—past a grizzled man holding a piece of cardboard with “Jeremiah 11:11” written on it, by some nefarious-looking teens, and down the steps toward the beach.

There, Adelaide finds a funhouselooking thing that says “Find yourself” next to a big, blinking arrow pointing into its dark depths.

If Adelaide would have had time to look up the proselytizer’s passage, she would have learned it reads, “Therefore thus saith the Lord, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they shall not be able to escape; and though they shall cry unto me, I will not hearken unto them.” Don’t go in the funhouse, Adelaide!

She drops her candy apple and scampers inside. Outside, the clouds rumble, lightning peals and, suddenly, the lights go out in the fun house. Adelaide whistles to lighten the mood. Someone whistles back. Adelaide does not, as advertised, find herself in what turns out to be a maze and hall of mirrors.

Instead she finds another child much like her. Exactly like her—her spitting image—waiting for her, calm, still … but angry.

Fast forward 30 or so years and, somehow, Adelaide (Lupita Nyong’o) is a well-adjusted woman with a lovely little family a husband, daughter and son, all portrayed neatly in one of those cute little stickers on the back of their car as they head to their vacation home by the beach.

Adelaide seems normal enough.

But she doesn’t feel totally normal as she finds herself, by happenstance, at the same beachfront where the incident took place so many years ago. Despite her anxiety, and the pleading reminders from the score that terror is lurking, everything looks all right at first.

But then a family shows up. It’s late

at night. And an unidentified foursome is just standing there, all in a row—kind of like that sticker on the car—right outside Adelaide’s house. As this other family sees to inviting themselves in, Adelaide’s son, Jason (Evan Alex), offers a partial identification: “It’s us.”

Indeed, the intruding family appears to be a carbon copy of Adelaide’s family.

Exactly alike in appearance.

Who are they? What do they want?

What are they going to do? These are natural questions—questions that don’t get answered right away, naturally.

Instead, the truth is revealed slowly and painfully amid all sorts of intensity, brutality, helplessness, hopelessness and horror.

Though, to be honest, I say the horror in “Us” abates a bit once the second family shows up. It’s just a different kind of movie, and the intense, mysterious atmosphere dissipates and gives way to a grizzlier, more in-your-face (though I think less terrifying) kind of film.

One way or another, “Us” remains tense throughout, gaining complexity as it goes. Peele kicks around ideas about class structure, systematic oppression and deep, psychological questions about the self which are fun to think about. This movie is also well written, acted, shot, composed, etc. In short, it’s a good movie.

But it doesn’t quite live up to its promise or cinematic inspirations (“The Shining,” “Funny Games,” “The Birds”). While the mood set in the earlier part of the film would have made Hitchcock and Kubrick proud, it does not maintain an oppressive aura throughout. We get relief, or something near enough. Which is a bad thing for a horror movie to give.

Furthermore, the thematic material about class, oppression, the self, while interesting, doesn’t really deliver the goods either. It’s as if Peele wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to do, what he wanted the doppelganger families to represent, or what he wanted to say.

Invasion of the…tumbleweed?

living the green life erin maker It sounds like something from a 1950s horror film, when movies like “The Blob” were popular. But this invasion actually is horrific. Invasive species of both plants and animals can outcompete the native species by overtaking habitat and food sources. It happens on both land and water and can quickly become out of control.

An invasive species is a plant or animal from another region of the world that doesn’t belong in their new environment.

These invasions are nothing new, and in fact most of them are the fault of humans.

English ivy, the bane of anyone who does restoration work in Central and Southern California, was brought to the United States by people who wanted to recreate the manicured green gardens of the British Isles. Nearly impossible to eradicate once it takes hold, it can choke out entire riparian corridors by outcompeting the native vegetation. It also creates a fire hazard by increasing the probability and intensity of wildfires.

These are just two examples of many that cause problems for native habitats.

There are many cases of voracious animals killing native plant species, causing erosion problems and endangering the native species. Often, if left unchecked, an invasive flora or fauna can outcompete the native species to the point of localized extinction; in extreme cases, they can cause the extinction of an entire species.

They are not unique to our region, or dry land. It is thought that Charles Darwin, while exploring the world on the Beagle

and while gathering information for what would become “On the Origin of Species,” introduced non-natives to sensitive habitats, carried there on the bottom of the ship he traveled on.

Invasive species are among the leading threat to wildlife, and the impact on both the natural ecosystems and economy impact caused costs billions of dollars each year. Above, I used two very visible examples, but anything can be invasive, not just plants, but any type of seed, bacteria, insect, animal or even eggs. Those that are introduced to a new environment and thrive, spreading and reproducing and potentially causing harm, are categorized as “invasive.”

It is important to keep in mind what is considered invasive when bringing new plants into your yard. The California Invasive Plant Council has an extensive database of what things not to plant in your garden. I started this column off with tumbleweeds because they are indeed invading the Carpinteria area. All one has to do is stroll alongside Santa Monica Creek to see where they have taken hold near the foothills. If you have a pet that you think would be happier in the wild, remember that pet might eat the native animals that live there. All one has to do is search Asian carp to get a sense of just how out of control one fish in the wrong place can get.

There are many organizations fighting invasive plant and animals around the globe, and I invite you to join in protecting native habitats and helping reduce the risk of potential harm by planting species that are approved in your areas.

Three seventh graders from Carpinteria Middle School—Elizabeth Alpizar, Grace Thompson and Isabel Nunez—are the top three final candidates selected to attend Tech Trek, a one-week math, science and engineering camp held at UCSB each summer. Tech Trek is a project of AAUW (American Association of University Women) that immerses girls in a world that empowers and encourages them to think about themselves as future scientists, engineers, mathematicians and computer specialists. Camper candidates are recommended by science and/or math teachers at participating middle schools, and they must then pass an extensive qualification process that includes an application, essay and a personal interview. Camp curriculum is targeted specifically at girls entering eighth grade, and the girls have the opportunity to get inspired for college life, living in the dorms and experiencing what life is like as a college student.

Carpinteria pilots community-based mental health care Carp Connect celebrates ribbon cutting, Health Care Center completes remodel

BY DEBRA HERRICK Maria Chesley started her speech with an African proverb, “If you want to go quickly, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.” The executive director of the Carpinteria Children’s Project (CCP) was highlighting the tremendous partnership of local government and nonprofit organizations that came together over 18 months to create the new mental healthcare hub, Carp Connect, which celebrated with a ribbon cutting on April 5, of the new suite in Carpinteria Veterans Hall, 941 Walnut Ave. “We know things roll down hill,” said First District Supervisor Das Williams from the podium, “Well, democracy defies gravity.” In the early, grassroots stages, Williams worked with Amrita Salm of HopeNet to advocate for a “be well, drop-in center,” reaching out to Congressman Salud Carbajal, who, along with state legislators Hannah Beth Jackson and Monique Limón, lent their full support to the Carpinteria-based project.

A key component of the sustainability of the Carp Connect project was to integrate mental health care with other medical care, and moreover, to ensure that the state reimburses mental health services to clients. Many of the Carp Connect clients will be referred by practitioners at the Carpinteria Health Care Center, which on the April 5 occasion also celebrated its remodeling. Often called, “the clinic,” Williams hailed the work of the health care center as “vital to the community,” serving around 800 people a month, an uptick since the

Legends return for 100th Russell Cup

When hundreds of young athletes arrive at Carpinteria High School on Saturday morning, they will take the field to compete not only among themselves, but among the tens of thousands who came before them to test their running, jumping and throwing abilities over 100 years of the Russell Cup Track & Field Meet. “every year this meet is special,” said Meet Director Van Latham. “But this year is particularly special. This year, we celebrate all those athletes who have pushed their limits at Russell Cup. We’ll reminisce about records set by yesterday’s athletes while we watch those records being challenged and broken by today’s athletes.”

The Russell Cup is California’s oldest high school track meet. In 1913, Carpinteria School Principal Francis Figg-Hoblyn formed a track team of local boys and invited other nearby schools to a competition. A year later, Howland Shaw Russell, who was a trustee of what would later be called Cate School, donated a silver cup for the winner of the meet, and the event gained its name: The Russell Cup. Small went on to break the state record for the 75-meter dash at the Regional IX Division Championship in Los Angeles. By smashing the existing 9.2-second record with a finish of 9 seconds flat, Small, who had run competitively for just a couple months, became an Olympic hopeful. She competed at the National AAU Track Finals that summer, where a knee injury during the competition kept her from qualifying for the Olympic trials. She went on to complete college at Cal State Northridge and then work there as an administrator. Several years ago, she retired to the Pacific Northwest.

Entering her first track meet as a senior in 1960, Sari Small made Carpinteria history and paved the way for future female athletes.

Before the spring of 1960, female athletes had no place in Russell Cup competitions, or many other track and field events throughout the state. Fred Greenough, who was Superintendent of Carpinteria Schools in the 1930s, recalled in later years, “We attempted to interest girl athletes in competing, but the woman Pe instructors of those days felt this was not an appropriate activity for teen-aged girls.”

But by the late 1950s, female Carpinteria Union High School coaches Marjorie Secrest and Ophelia Morales, née Saragosa, had joined the school staff and were motivating more female involvement in sports, according to a 2014 Russell Cup history published in the Carpinteria Valley Historical Society’s newsletter. Sari Small caught the attention of these two coaches.

Small had grown up romping around Toro Canyon with her brothers. She was fast and fearless, and longed to participate in competitive sports. “I was very envious of boys in general and my brothers specifically for being able to test themselves in a wide variety of athletic activities,” Small recalled. “This was especially true of Russell Cup for I enjoyed the variety of physical activity involved.”

In the spring of 1960, the Russell Cup opened up to women. Small, and fellow Carpinteria Union High School senior girls Dolly Sanchez, Irene Reveles and Susanne

Twenty years after Sari Small sprinted into history at the Russell Cup, along came another female history-maker, Sarah Allaback. The young athlete had started running with her mother, Patty Manuras, as a sixth-grader at Main School. At that point, the Russell Cup was one of her primary inspirations. “It stands out in my mind as the one day each year when our whole town gathered to celebrate track and field and when other teams from all over the state joined us—transforming our small Jr. High School into a real athletic stadium (The meet was then held at what is now Carpinteria Middle School). When I started running in sixth grade, I usually trained alone at the dusty, rutted dirt track, and so that one day was like a miracle.”

“My most vivid memories (of the 1982 Russell Cup) involve anticipating the competition and the exhilaration of actually breaking the records—something that seemed impossible just the year before,” Allaback said. “I also remember eating an entire sub sandwich right after the two-mile to prepare for the mile, which was just two hours later. That extra fuel must have helped!”

After graduating from Cate, Allaback earned a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University then a doctorate from MIT. She now lives in Amherst, Mass., and works as an architectural historian and an editor for the Library of American Landscape History, a nonprofit publisher.

Allaback looks forward to attending the 100th Russell Cup this weekend. “For me, the meet is a kind of reunion,” she said. “I’m coming to see my former coaches, John Larralde and Joe Cantrell, who were mentors throughout my high school running career, and to support an event that was a stepping stone to my running in college and receiving an exceptional education.”

No conversation about Carpinteria’s Russell Cup greats is complete without mention of Tom Grewe, six-time CIF and State Champion. This year, Grewe, who lives in Virginia, will return to the Russell Cup Meet for the first time since 1988. Asked what he looks forward to most, he said, “just experiencing it.”

Though Grewe ranks among the best athletes in CHS history, he clearly recalls his inauspicious first Russell Cup. He stumbled in the 330-yard low hurdles, and failed to qualify for the final, then he dropped the baton and disqualified his 440-yard relay team. To top it off, he pulled a muscle in the triple jump, which forced him to sit out the mile relay.

Junior Russell Cup sets new tradition

The first-ever Junior Russell Cup—a children’s event in the tradition of the 100-year old annual Russell Cup Track Meet—was held on Friday, April 5, at Carpinteria High School stadium. Kids from across Carpinteria Unified School District participated in track and field competitions, including races, long jump and shotput. “The Jr. Russell Cup was a resounding success,” said Patrick Cooney, athletic director for CUSD, “as the field was abuzz with an impressive swarm of talented young participants.”

Shorthanded Cate Boys Lacrosse team drops match at Dos Pueblos, 9-6

The Cate School boys lacrosse team traveled to Goleta last week to take on Dos Pueblos in a Channel League matchup on April 4. Trailing 5-1 after two quarters, the Rams battled back in the second half, but came up short, dropping a 9-6 decision. The loss puts Cate at 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the Channel League. The Chargers improves to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in league.

The match got off to a slow start with neither squad cracking the scoreboard in the first quarter and leaving the field tied at zero. Cate came into the match with a couple of injuries to key players suffered earlier in the week—junior midfielder Will Anderson and junior goalie Peter Buckley. As a result, the Rams inserted sophomore Adrian Binns at goalie from the JV team, making his first appearance of the season for the varsity. “He actually did very, very well for us today,” said Cate coach Andrew MacDonnell. Binns made two big saves in the first stanza, one that he snatched out of the air in the opening minute of the match, and the other on a bouncing ball toward the end of the period to help shut down the Chargers.

The home team got on the board first, when John Essig found Jake Spencer in front of the Rams goal to make it 1-0 with 10:50 left till the midway point. However, a little more than a minute later, Cate answered when Dylan Vincent connected with Anthony DuPrau who hurled one into the back of the net to tie the game at one. But less than a minute later, Essig darted up the middle to net the go-ahead goal for the Chargers, making it 2-1.

minutes left till the half to preserve the one-goal lead. Following a time out, Dos Pueblos found a burst of energy, scoring the game’s next three goals.

Ethan Kahn notched the first two, one on an assist by Essig, and another where Kahn went right into the teeth of the Rams’ defense to give his team a 4-1 lead. Jack Horton tallied his first goal of the night, and the lead grew to 5-1 by halftime.

Cate came out the second half on fire, as Vincent tallied his first goal of the night on an assist from Charlie Heyman to put the score at 5-2 with 9:56 left in the third. With 7:29 left, the Rams’ Peter Firestone found himself all alone in front of the net, scoring on the breakaway to cut the deficit to 5-3.

“We had a roster today of 13 …, and we only played 11 of the guys, to even compete with Dos Pueblos today was impressive,” explained MacDonnell whose team has only three seniors. In comparison, the Chargers came in with a roster of 21 with 14 seniors.

Dos Pueblos scored the next two goals to extend their lead out to 7-3.

Vincent tallied another goal for the visitors with 18 seconds left in the quarter, and the Rams trailed 7-4 going into the fourth. The sophomore scored three goals for the game to lead Cate and Firestone, a senior, registered two.

In the fourth, Vincent’s final goal cut the lead to 7-5, but the Chargers added another and closed out the 8-6 win. The Rams are back on the road to play Santa Barbara on Thursday, April 11, with the ball being dropped at 4 p.m.

The Carpinteria United 10U girls soccer all-star team took part in the Apricot Jam Tournament April 6-7 and earned a first-place finish. The local girls outscored their opponents 14-0 in pool play to earn a spot in the finals on Sunday.

Carpinteria United battled Agoura in a back and forth contest and managed to pull out a thrilling 3-2 victory on a late fourth quarter goal. Head coach Mike Miller said, “The key to winning the championship was the play of our defense.

We didn’t give up a goal in our first three games which was huge. We also got some timely goals and great goalie play. I’m very proud of all 10 girls, each one of them contributed and they continue to improve.”

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH

Winning and Losing I shaped myself a fresh Twin Fin for the Rincon Classic this year. Being a competition model, I added two black and white checker stripes over silver/ grey paint for that vintage racing look.

I gave serious consideration to shaving my hair into a modified Mohawk/mullet, complete with a couple of lightning bolts cut into the sides to let my competitors know I was out for blood. Fortunately, I contained my visions of grandeur not only for morning school drop-offs and my daughter’s mortification, but also because I limped from the field of battle in defeat—washed out in my first heat due to poor wave selection.

The sting of losing was as sharp as it’s ever been. From the corner of my mind where rational thought still ruled, I observed the rest of my conscious self nearly overcome with shame and embarrassment—two distinct sides of a bitter coin. I felt shame for the way my carefully formed game plan had fallen apart once I hit the water, for the way I paddled about desperately looking for a wave as everyone else in the heat got into good ones on what was a stellar day of surf at the Rincon. The embarrassment came from my John McEnroe-worthy outburst of frustrated cursing as the 20 minutes of the heat drained away and I had only two middling waves to show for my efforts.

One of the guys sitting in the afternoon glare off the water to the west, waiting for the next heat to begin, called over as I was laying into my wide repertoire of expletives: “You’re really enjoying this,

Beamish en route to a round-1 bow-out. aren’t you?” A gentle taunt, no doubt meant to nudge some perspective my way, but I was too bitter to see it and replied, “Yeah, I f------ love this s---.” I held it together once on the beach where my loving family were proudly sporting their “Surfboards California by Christian Beamish” T-shirts, but the next few hours were pretty rough. It was as if all the defeats in my competitive surfing life—from the first Boogie Board contest I lost as an 8-year-old in Laguna Beach, to the last heat I failed to make in the National Scholastic Surfing Association before shipping out with the Seabees—were concentrated in this one, additional loss.

Recently turning 50, one would think I’d have come to a place of acceptance for my surfing lot in life. Apparently not.

As my friend Scott Hulet, editor of The Surfer’s Journal, says, “We’re playing in the sand box” as surfers. Clearly, there are much weightier issues looming than my personal performance in the next-to-theoldest-guys-in-the-contest division of the Rincon Classic. But that familiar wound was right there, having wanted so badly to do well but falling short, yet again. It’s the thing that has meant the most to me in my life—this surfing thing. It’s always lit up every one of my senses with joy, wonder, imagination. As a kid, I wanted to be part of it like what I saw in the magazines, but always doubted how it could ever be. Of course, there was never anything more to it than getting out there and being a part of it, which I have certainly done, but

something—some fear, insecurity—long kept me reaching for a ring that I never fully believed I could grasp.

Objective validation of the skill I’ve acquired over 40 years of wave riding must drive me still. Of course, the best moments of my surfing life have come at a great remove from either contests or cameras, and have often involved long days of solitary sailing and a stretch of reef late in the day shared with only seabirds and seals deep in Baja California. But surfing for me is a weird mix of pop-culture imagery and a deep soul stirring—the bright flash of surfing idols and the mystery of the sea. “Success” in wave riding is a changeable notion.

There is the most basic level of success in merely being able to paddle out and catch a wave. Attaining some level of skill, and advancing to more challenging line ups is another. Still another form of success is maintaining one’s life so that surfing remains a possibility, even as the demands of adulthood urge one shoreward.

But was I ever confronted by my fragile ego at the Rincon Classic! Who knew I had so much riding on what I could do in 20 minutes against five other wetsuit-clad middle aged men? A friend

sent over a video clip of a couple of my waves from the heat, and looking them over I’d say I surfed them competently.

Naturally, there were two other waves in the heat that I should have, or could have, ridden that might have made the difference had my positioning in the lineup been better. My friend sent a note with the video saying “Motivation for 2020!” and she’s right. I might have to rock the Mohawk next year after all, complete with lightning bolts shaved in (apologies in advance to Josephine). Now that I am by any definition “middle aged,” my thoughts on surfing success are slowly evolving, and I think it’s time to accept that I’ll probably never be a very good contest surfer. But I am resolved to keep getting out there anyway, and to enjoy the dance with less cursing.

On March 24, Anita Pulido completed her 24th consecutive Los Angeles Marathon, beginning at Dodger Stadium and finishing at the Santa Monica Pier. Pulido expressed that running the LA Marathon fills her with a sense of fulfillment and she enjoys running alongside the many folks from different cultures, ages, shapes and sizes that participate in the yearly athletic event. “My mom is often encouraging others to run but notes that preparation is a must,” said her daughter Lorraine.

Pulido trains locally by hiking the Franklin Trail and running along the Pacific Coast Highway. “Anyone can do it, but it is important to make it your own journey,” said Pulido, “Be happy and enjoy!”

Anita Pulido once again completes the Los Angeles Marathon, an achievement she has enjoyed for 24 consecutive years.

CHS softball team turns triple play

The Carpinteria High School girls softball team executed a feat last week rarely seen at any level in softball. Playing against Santa Paula on April 4, the Warriors turned a triple play, with Senior Jauslyn Richardson and sophomore Kenna Mayer completing the trio of outs in one play in the top of the sixth. After making the catch on a popup with runners on first and second, Richardson threw to Mayer at second who tagged the base and runner to end the inning. But the Cardinals did their damage in the other innings: scoring one in the first and fourth, and two in the sixth and seventh, for a 6-0 win. The runs in the seventh came courtesy of a homerun by sophomore Navaeh Delgadillo. The loss puts Carpinteria’s overall record to 3-8 and 1-4 in the Citrus Coast League.

Boys volleyball

April 2 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team traveled south to Malibu, home of the Sharks, coming back to town with a 3-0 match sweep. Numberseven, Outside hitter Liam Slade had 14 kills. “Middle blocker, Number-10 Luis Zamora protected the net well, and had nine kills, one block,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Number-four, now starting middle blocker Gabriel Medel made his presence known with seven kills and two blocks. Diesel Slade, Number-five outside hitter added another seven kills. Starting libero, Number-one Miguel Enriquez yielded 30 digs and served four aces. Setter, Number-11 Luke Nakasone provided 33 assists.

Baseball

April 3 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team made the trip down PCH to Malibu and came away with an 8-3 win. Miles Souza needed 72 pitches to dispatch the Sharks. His complete game effort included two strikeouts and a walk that came on three pitches and his record improved to 4-1. Third baseman Tyler Cervantes had five ground ball chances on defense and made each of his plays. Chase Mayer paced the offense with a pair of hits including a double, a run and an RBI. Luke Lounsbury also had a pair of singles, a run and an RBI. Souza helped with a double, a run scored and two RBI. Andy Johnson and Gabe Perez each had RBI singles that contributed to the seven-run fifth for the Warriors, and Noah Nuño executed a bunt single off Sharks starter Luke Mickens.

April 5 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team grabbed the season series, but not the sweep, as the Malibu Sharks scored for two runs in the seventh for a 3-1 win at Calderwood Field on the Warriors’ home turf. Chase Mayer toed the rubber for the Warriors and held the Shark attack down, allowing eight hits, walking none, striking out seven and surrendering two earned runs. Jacob Macias and Miles Souza paced the Warrior offense as the pair had four of the seven Carpinteria hits between them. One of Macias’ hits was a double, Souza scored the lone Warrior run when he was forced home on a bases loaded walk to Andy Johnson in the bottom of the sixth. Carpinteria drops to 9-5 overall and 7-4 in the Citrus Coast League, two games behind first place Santa Paula and one behind the Sharks. “Winning any series in the Citrus Coast League is a big deal. In fact, it’s the goal against each opponent,” said Warriors coach Pat Cooney.

April 9 – The Carpinteria High School boys baseball team lost to Bishop Diego, 5-1. Carpinteria made four fielding miscues as the Cardinals tallied four runs over the first two frames. Miles Souza and Noah Nuño pitched in relief, keeping the Warriors within striking distance. “The team that played the best, won today. Credit the Cards for being prepared and energized from the first pitch to the last,” said Warriors coach Pat Cooney. Carpinteria scored a late run in the sixth to pull closer, but Bishop’s pitching squelched the Warrior rally and stranded two baserunners.

The Warriors are now 9-6 on the year, while the Cardinals are 10-5-1 with both teams still in playoff contention.

Swimming

April 3 – The Carpinteria High School swim team visited Santa Paula for a Citrus Coast League swim meet with the Warrior girls coming up on top by a score of 8479. The Warrior boys came up short to the Cardinal boys, 93-49. The Warrior boys competed with five swimmers. Freshman Piper Clayton placed in all four of her events, three of those placements being first. “Sophomore Beau Persoon also had a strong showing, as he placed in all of his events and qualified for CIF consideration in the 100 freestyle,” said Warriors coach Sergio Castaneda. “Despite the loss on the boys side, the results were still positive and lots of strong swims were present,” added Castaneda. The Warriors now have a solid two-week block of training before their last league meet at home.

Track and field

April 4 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team split with Santa Paula in Citrus Coast League (CCL) action with the Warrior girls (2-2 in the CCL) besting the Cardinals 102 to 32, and the boys (2-2 in the CCL) coming up short against the Cardinals 82.5 to 43.5. Savannah Alvarez won the long jump, traveling 15 feet, three inches, and the triple jump, ramping up to 30 feet, nine and a quarter inch. Josie Gordon was also a double winner for the girls with victories in the 100 and 200 meters. Caton Pettine set a Personal Record (PR) and a meet record of eight feet, six inches to win the pole vault. Breanna De Lira lowered her PR to 65.66 seconds to win the 400. Sallury Hernandez also had a toss of 99 feet, four inches to win the discus.

Meanwhile, Victor Rinaldi won the 400 with a time of 51.21. He also anchored the winning four x 400 relay team for a meet record of 3:34.96. Solomon NahooikaikaAnderson made up a 30-meter deficit on the third leg of the race to put the Warriors ahead. He lowered his PR to 50.5 in the process. Isaac De Alba won the shot put with a toss of 46 feet, 10 and one-half inches.

Boys tennis

April 1 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team defeated the Thacher Toads in a non-league match, 10-8. Austin Stone went 3-0 and Myles Morgan went 2-1. In doubles, Kirby Zapata/Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson and Carlos Costilla/Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson each went 2-1 with wins against the Toads Number-two team, but both dropped sets to the Toads Number-one team. Ian McCurry/Cameron Gralewski went 1-2. “We were balanced today as we won five sets in singles and five sets in doubles, but I was really hoping our doubles would have had a better showing,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Carpinteria is now 14-2 overall and still 6-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

Coast League match, 11-7. “I was happy with Austin Stone as he refused to drop a game in his three-set sweep,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Myles Morgan similarly dropped two games; and Esteban Zapata went 1-1. In doubles, Cameron Gralewski/ Steve Poulos went 1-1 at Number-one doubles, as did Luke Nahooikaika/Carlos Costilla. Solomon Nahooikaika/Kirby Zapata went 2-0 together. Sam Castillo/Isaac Benitez won their only set, 6-1. Carpinteria is now 15-2 overall and 7-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

April 5 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team came up short against Santa Barbara in a non-league match, dropping an 11-7 decision. “We performed well in doubles today, and although they did not win, I thought Cameron Gralewski/ Steve Poulos played well together,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. But the doubles points came from Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson/Carlos Costilla and Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson/Kirby Zapata who each went 2-1 but fell to the Dons Number-one tandem. In singles, Austin Stone went 2-1 and Myles Morgan went 1-2. “We had some very good set wins against the perennial power Dons as we held on to leads or made a few comebacks to win,” explained Bryant of his team’s overall play. Carpinteria is now 15-3 overall and still 7-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

April 9 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team defeated Hueneme in a Citrus Coast League match, 12-6. In doubles, Carlos Costilla/Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson went 3-0, and in their last set, won the last three games for a win of 7-5. Kirby Zapata/ Austin Stone went 2-0. In singles, Myles Morgan and Esteban Zapata each went 2-0.

“I was very impressed with Esteban today, he was great from the baseline, extending rallies defensively but also took some of the wind movement out of the ball by getting to the net and finishing points with some well-placed volleys,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Carpinteria is now 16-3 overall and 8-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

Girls lacrosse

April 2 – The Cate School girls lacrosse team upended Santa Barbara, 20-2. “Ali Istanbullu, Riley Borchardt and Tori Trimble all played smart defense,” said Rams coach Renee Mack. The Cate offense was also on point, scoring five goals in the first five minutes of the game. “Andreah Graf, Imani Oseso and Mia Foster also stood out in the midfield and on attack,” added Mack. Maddie Erikson led the way with seven goals. Foster netted two goals and dished out two assists. Hannah Biles, Piper Brooks, Oseso, Lily Rhiel and Lilly Zanze all had two goals apiece on the day.

April 4 – The Cate School girls lacrosse team dropped a 9-8 contest to Dos Pueblos.

Senior captain Maddie Erikson finished the attack scoring six goals and junior captain Piper Brooks added four assists, winning three draws for Cate. “Today, Andreah Graf set the bar for hard work, grit and team-support. 1:37 p.m. / Follow-up / 7100 block Shepard’s Mesa Road An abandoned backpack was reported at the address. Upon inspection, the backpack contained approximately 80 pounds of cherimoyas and cutting tools. The backpack is thought to be involved with the arrest of cherimoya thieves earlier this week. The cherimoyas were returned to the property owner. The backpack and tools were booked as evidence.

Friday, April 5,

12:50 p.m. / Assult and Warrant Arrest / 900 block of Concha Loma

Deputies responded to the report of two females heard fighting. Both parties got into a domestic altercation, with one woman being the aggressor and leaving visible marks on the other. The aggressor was also in possession of meth in her pant pocket and in her wallet, and the woman who had been assaulted had a warrant for her arrest. Both subjects were arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

8:58 p.m. / Warrant Arrest / 3700 block Santa Claus Lane

A deputy was flagged down by a witness in Summerland who saw a white car knock over a parked motorcycle. The white car was still visible and the deputy made a traffic stop. The driver was a resident of Los Angeles and admitted to the hit and run. He was also DUI. The CHP responded and completed the investigation and arrest.

While contacting two occupants of a vehicle parked on the side of the road, a records check revealed that one of the men had two outstanding misdemeanor warrants for his arrest. The man was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

9:56 p.m. / Public Intoxication / Casitas Pass Road

9:54 p.m. / Warrant Arrest / 5300 block Carpinteria Ave.

Deputies were dispatched on a report of a female and a male arguing in the area of a breakfast restaurant. Deputies arrived and contacted a man who was intoxicated to the point where he was unable to care for his own safety or the safety of others. The man was arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

2:03 a.m. / Warrant Arrest / 1100 block Casitas Pass Road Deputies were dispatched on a report of two subjects seen arguing with a convenience store clerk. Deputies arrived and contacted a man and a records check revealed that he had a warrant for his arrest. The man was arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Wednesday, April 3

1:40 a.m. / Trailer Theft / 101 / Bailard Avenue offramp

An alert was broadcasted for a black truck towing a stolen trailer, last seen at Carrillo Street in Santa Barbara. A deputy located the vehicle and made the stop at Bailard Avenue. The driver of the vehicle first advised he did not know the trailer was stolen and stated he bought the trailer in Oxnard off Craig’s List.

The driver was advised that video was obtained from the area that he had stolen the trailer and he ultimately admitted to the theft. The suspect was arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

4:31 p.m. / Warrant Arrest / Carpinteria Sub-station

A woman turned herself in at the Carpinteria sub-station for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. The warrant was confirmed and she was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

9:09 p.m. / Warrant Arrest / 4800 block Carpinteria Ave.

While on patrol, a deputy observed a wanted man who was stopped and detained while the warrant was confirmed.

The man was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

While contacting two subjects in a parked car a deputy ascertained that the man and woman inside both had misdemeanor warrants for their arrest.

Both were arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

12:08 a.m. / Possession / Carpinteria Avenue at Casitas Pass Road

A man was contacted while smoking a cigarette in the city of Carpinteria. A consent search of his property revealed heroin, meth, paraphernalia and a wallet belonging to someone else. The man was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Saturday, April 6

8:44 p.m. / Possession / 1300 block Dahlia Court

A deputy stopped and contacted a man who was sitting in his parked vehicle. As the deputy spoke with the man, he saw a bottle cap that contained heroin. The deputy searched the vehicle and found several used syringes and a small bindle of tar heroin concealed in a sock. The man was cited and released because of several calls holding.

9:49 p.m. / Warrant Arrest / 1000 block Casitas Pass Road A deputy contacted a man sitting in a parked vehicle. A records check revealed that he had a warrant for his arrest, and the man was arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

April 4 – The Cate School boys tennis team improved to 5-0 in Tri-Valley League play with a 16-2 win over St. Bonaventure. Cate Number-one singles player Ethan Ha had the day off. Rams junior Parker May starting at Number-two singles, swept all three sets. Freshman Jinming Wang started at Number-one dropped his first set 7-6 against St. Bonnie’s Number-one, then came back to win his next two sets, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Michael Armstrong started at Number-three singles, defeating St. Bonnie’s Number-two and three before dropping his last set against the Number-one singles. “The Rams continued their stellar doubles play, sweeping all nine doubles sets, said Cate coach Jason Saltoun. “Number-one doubles senior Brad Gordon/ junior Devin Pai, Number-two Phil Xu/Lucian Prinz and Number-three Stefan Shu/Bryce Kim all played great,” added Saltoun.

April 5 – The Cate School boys tennis team (7-5 overall, 5-0 Tri-Valley League) dropped a match to crosstown foe, Dos Pueblos (DP) 10-8. Cate Number-one Ethan Ha continued winning with a 6-2, 6-0, 6-1 performance. Number-two, freshman Jinming Wang, continued in singles play, picking up a 7-5 win in the first round against the Number-two of the Chargers, and a 6-4 win in the third round against the Number-three Dos Pueblos singles. The Rams Number-one doubles team, senior Brad Gordon/junior Devin Pai, had another perfect day starting with a 7-6 win in the first round against the DP Number-one doubles team, and then earning a 6-2 win against the Number-three and a 6-3 win against Number-two.

“DP was just too deep of a team for us,” Cate coach Jason Ebin said after the match.

“We competed great at the Number-one singles, Number-two singles and Numberone doubles spots winning eight of the nine of those sets, but we really couldn’t keep up with them after that,” added Ebin.

April 9 – The Cate School boys tennis team improved to 6-0 in Tri-Valley League play with a 10-8 win at Thacher and are one win away from clinching the league championship. “Ethan Ha again led the way at Number-one singles with a perfect day,” said Rams coach Jason Ebin. Number-two doubles, Phil Xu and Lucian Prinz, picked up a set in the second round to help the Rams get to 10 sets. The Rams conclude league play against Laguna Blanca on Thursday, April 11 at Cate at 4 p.m.

Boys volleyball

April 9 – The Cate School boys volleyball team beat Laguna Blanca in four games, 3-1. Sophomore Albert Barber and junior Theo Mack moved from their positions to split the setting and passing duties while also running the offensive strategies. Mack was also the Rams’ kill leader with 15. Senior Cullen Barber contributed nine kills from the front and back row, while also picking up eight digs and three blocks. “All of middles we’re engaged with junior Ethan Ng tallying two kills. Blocker Sean Busse added a kill and a block and senior Carson Williams came in for his first match after injury earning three kills and a block,” said Rams coach K.C. Collins. Junior Kenneth Liou moved to the right side, knocking down three kills, and Jojo Broussard in the back had five digs. Ryan Suh as libero from the back row, had eight digs.

Club SCene Building peace at Rotary

The Carpinteria Morning Rotary Club heard from Karen Glancy, the chair of Rotary’s Peacebuilder Committee, who announced “Morning Rotary is the first Peacebuilder Club in Rotary District 5240 to achieve (Peacebuilder) status in 2019.”

To become a Peacebuilder Club, individual Rotary clubs must participate in community-building projects both locally and internationally to build Rena VanKirk and Karen Glancy share the infrastructure and promote volume “A New Peace Paradigm” at a recent peace.

Carpinteria Morning Rotary projects in 2019 include sending youth to Rotary Leadership camps, offering college scholarships, building community organizations by awarding grants to local groups with profits earned from the “2019 Carpinteria Calendar” project, providing all third graders in the Carpinteria School District a dictionary of their own, as well as several other projects, including maintaining the Tomol Interpretive Playground.

International projects involve being a “Unite to Light” liaison to Rotary for distributing solar lights and cell phone chargers, supporting water sanitation projects developed after the Rotary Mexican Safari, and projects in Morning Rotary Chapter Clubs in Guatemala and Chile promoting bee populations and garden pollination, music programs and offering vision care to over 45,000 children. Local projects in the planning stages are a workshop for youth and parents involving peace, conflict resolution and the dangers of social media and bullying and the “Common Table” project. Morning Rotary will hold a social hour and tour of the Carpinteria Valley Historical Museum, 956 Maple Ave., on Thursday, April 11, from 4:30 to 6:30pm.

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY Have you become the keeper of the past for your family? Are you the one who has inherited boxes of unidentified photos that appear to be from the 19th century? Don’t throw in the towel and toss them away. All is not lost. You can do a bit of detective work and discover who they are.

The first step is to narrow the time period from when the picture was taken.

This can be accomplished by recognizing whether it is a Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, Tintype or a Cabinet Card.

Daguerreotype images were introduced in 1839 as the first publicly available photographic process. They are very delicate and were always kept in a protective, lined, leather case. They are also highly reflective, requiring you to tilt them at a 45-degree angle in order to view the image, otherwise you see only a reflection of yourself.

In 1854, Ambrotypes were patented and being less expensive they quickly became the popular choice. Printed on glass and backed with a dark material, if the backing deteriorates, you can often see through the glass which gives the image a ghostly appearance.

Tintypes came along two years later in 1856 and as the name suggests, were printed on metal and are attracted to a magnet. While prevalent through the 1870s, tintypes are still used today.

Cabinet cards were photos mounted on stiff pieces of cardboard and were popular from the 1880s into the 1900s.

The front of the card is usually printed with the photographer’s details, and this can be very helpful as your ancestors normally would not have traveled far to have their photos taken. If the studio was in North Dakota and you only have one branch of your family from there, it’s a good bet you should focus on that family.

To further aid in determining the year your photograph was taken, be attentive to clothing and hairstyles. The reserve shelters countless wildlife species and the trails cut through ferns and orchids. High above, they hiked through the forest canopy over eight suspended hanging bridges. Preparing for the Work Ahead!

This past November Carpinteria voters approved a 1.25% local sales tax to provide new revenue for important City services.

The new tax went into effect April 1st and the City is estimating that it could generate approximately $2.1 million annually. Voter passage of the new tax was an outcome of a Five Year Financial Plan process that included many community and stakeholder meetings about the City’s financial position and related service impacts.

In response to the community directive and vote of confidence implicit with the passage of the tax measure, in February

the City Council approved a strategic plan for use of the new revenue. The plan includes creation of a separate accounting Fund that will allow for revenue and expenditures from the new tax to be tracked independent of all other City revenues and expenditures. Each year as a part of the City’s budgeting and independent financial auditing, the City Council and public will see how much revenue is being generated from the tax, how it is being spent, and how those expenditures align with established priorities.

The Council also established spending priorities for the new tax revenue through approval of a Programmatic Spending Plan totaling $1.8 million. The Spending Plan calls for the next fiscal year budget (July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020), to include allocation that will allow for expanded law enforcement and emergency preparation/response services, a greater amount of annual street pavement, sidewalk, storm drain and street tree CITY MANAGER cont. on page 3

City Approves New Single-Use Plastic Regulations

Carpinteria continues to be a leader in reducing waste at its source. In March, the Carpinteria City Council voted to require food and beverage providers to eliminate single-use straws, stirrers, and cutlery and also require that single-use plastic lids and condiments be handed out upon customer request only. The regulations are effective immediately on a voluntary basis, and will be mandatory on January 1, 2020. The City will conduct an extensive education campaign to help businesses understand the regulations and work with the community to achieve 100% compliance by the January 1, 2020 deadline.

City Welcomes Back Lieutenant Ugo Peter “Butch” Arnoldi

Santa Barbara County Sheriff ’s Lieutenant Ugo Peter “Butch” Arnoldi has been selected as the City’s Police Chief. In his new assignment, Lt. Arnoldi oversees operations at the Carpinteria Sheriff ’s Station. His reassignment and return to the Coastal Patrol Bureau are very much a “Welcome Back” as he previously served in this position from February 2001 to February 2003.

As a 44+ year veteran of the Sheriff ’s Department, Lt. Arnoldi is no stranger to law enforcement. In fact, during his time with the Department he has worked a wide variety of assignments throughout the County from Santa Maria to Carpinteria and is the only Sheriff ’s Lieutenant to have served as the Station Commander at every Station in the South County. He is currently the longest serving member of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff ’s Office.

Not only is Lt. Arnoldi a dedicated law enforcement professional, but he also participates in various community service activities, which include the Santa Barbara County United Way and Southern California Special Olympics, to name a few. Lt. Arnoldi and his family have been part of the South Coast community since 1921, active both in the masonry and restaurant businesses. His grandfather began his masonry business in 1932 and his grandparents, Joe and Ilda, opened their landmark and historic Arnoldi’s Cafe in 1937. Lt. Arnoldi lives in Santa Barbara with his wife Marla. They have two children, Giuseppe and Francesca.

Coincidently Marla, Guiseppe and Francesca all work for the Sheriff ’s Department.

Additionally, the Chamber was a key member of the disaster relief marketing effort, “#Love Local Business,” a Woman’s Economic Venture initiative which includes chambers of commerce, legislators,and key business leaders throughout the 805 region. City staff is also currently working jointly with the Chamber to provide information and resources to local businesses in order for them to remain operable in the event of a disaster.

John Ilasin

New faces at City Hall

John Ilasin was recently hired as the City of Carpinteria’s Public Works Director and City Engineer. John is a Registered Professional Civil Engineer with 20 years of experience in the engineering, administration, and management of municipal public works.

In his role as Public Works Director/City Engineer, John will be working with the Public Works team to implement improvement projects especially for the community’s transportation infrastructure including more pavement rehabilitation and pedestrian and bicycle facilities. According to John, he immediately noticed how talented, hard-working, and dedicated the Public Works department staff is. “The overall Citywide staff culture seems great!” John believes in an “inclusionaryopen discussion-empowerment culture,” and further looks to encourage and foster this and be a “mentor-leader” to his staff.

John is also a U.S. Army Veteran having served six years as an equipment mechanic soldier in the U.S. Army Ordnance Corps. He enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, playing volleyball, and surfing.

Joshua Patricio

Joshua Patricio filled the City of Carpinteria’s Engineering Technician position. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering as well as a Master of Science degree in Environmental Engineering. Joshua is currently working to obtain his Professional Engineering certification. He has worked in the private sector for the past five years, primarily in consulting for environmental remediation, and has also worked in various areas of the civil engineering discipline. Joshua resides in Ventura with his golden retriever puppy and enjoys all that coastal California offers.

Tatiana Caruso

The City welcomes Tatiana Caruso as part-time Office Assistant to the City Clerk. In her role with the City, Tatiana assists in completing Council agenda packets, general office assignments, and assisting visitors to City Hall. Additionally, Tatiana is the proud owner and operator of Tatiana’s Coffee & Tea; which, according to both Yelp and Google reviews, is one of the best coffee houses in Ventura. Prior to owning her coffee shop, Tatiana worked as Administrative Assistant for Dehlsen Associates LLC., a company leader in the alternative energy industry.

Tatiana was born in Colombia, South America. She resides in Oxnard with her husband, Diego Mazo. Tatiana is also a cat lover and is the loving mother to Milo and Harriet.

Chevron Begins Decommissioning Work on Carpinteria Oil and Gas Plant

Chevron has commenced decommissioning operations related to the Carpinteria Oil and Gas Plant. Working with the City of Carpinteria, the oil company has initiated the process of permanently dismantling the plant, according to Aly Hakam, project manager for Chevron North America. “Some areas will remain active to assist with the offshore well plugging and closure that will take place over the next few years,” said Hakam. “As the first stage of this process, we are removing idle and unused equipment from the plant.” The yellow areas in the photo above identify equipment to be removed at this time.

Equipment removal work is being conducted Monday to Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., with truck traffic routed along Dump Road and Carpinteria Avenue to the Bailard onramp.

City Studies Sea Level Rise

To ensure our community remains safe from coastal impacts of sea level rise, the City of Carpinteria has begun a Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Project (SLRVAAP). We are excited to share our progress on this effort.

In the fall of 2017, the City commissioned a report to enhance our understanding of potential sea level rise impacts and to identify available adaptation strategies for our community. Findings from this project, which is supported by grant funding from the California Coastal Commission and Caltrans, will be taken into account as the City updates its Coastal Land Use Plan and General Plan (CLUP/GP).

The report relies on the best available science and data to identify at-risk assets to help the public, agencies, and decision makers prioritize adaptive measures. Through public meetings, workshops, and comment submissions, several members of the public have contributed to the process. Additionally, we have collaborated with numerous State, regional, and local agencies to maximize regional coordination going forward.

Equipped with the conceptual strategies in the report, we will discuss the findings and the next steps with residents, businesses and other stakeholders, and refine the strategies through continued public outreach, future technical study, and economic analysis.

This report provides an important technical understanding of potential coastal hazards. As policymakers deliberate on how to incorporate sea level rise adaptation strategies into the CLUP/GP over the next year, interested community members are strongly encouraged to participate and share their priorities.

Green Heron Spring

The Green Heron Spring project located at 1300 Cravens Lane is now under construction, and includes the creation of 31 new residential condominium units on a 3.89-acre site in the following configuration: • 10 two-bedroom units ranging in size from 1,491 square feet to 1,760 square feet (inclusive of attached one-car garages). These units will be configured in attached townhome clusters with other units and are all designed as single level flats; • 19 three-bedroom units ranging in size from 2,207 square feet to 2,701 square feet (inclusive of attached two-car garages). Of these units, nine will be configured as part of multi-unit townhome buildings, six will be detached single family dwellings, and four will be configured as duplexes; • Two detached, 2,578 square foot, four-bedroom single family dwellings (inclusive of attached two-car garage); and • A 780 square foot open air pavilion to be located within the common village green area. The pavilion will include amenities such as a kitchenette, outdoor grill, fireplace lounge area and outdoor seating areas.

Pursuant to the City’s Inclusionary Housing Ordinance, four of the new units will be set aside as affordable units designated for the upper-moderate income category. The four inclusionary units will be distributed throughout the development and are made up of two- and three-bedroom townhome and duplex units.

Sanctuary Beach

The Sanctuary Beach development, located at 4295 Carpinteria Avenue, is a proposed four unit, two building condominium project.

The proposal includes four three-bedroom units of approximately 2,300 square feet each. The project has been approved by the Planning Commission and must record its condominium map before building permits can be issued.

Bus Stop at Carpinteria and Elm Avenue to be Relocated

The eastbound serving bus stop at the intersection of Carpinteria Avenue and Elm Avenue will be relocated in the coming months to the intersection of Carpinteria and Holly avenues. Additionally, the project includes removal of a crosswalk on Carpinteria Avenue, improvement of curb ramps between the old and new bus stop locations, and installation of a refurbished bus shelter at Carpinteria and Linden Avenue.

This project aims to enhance pedestrian safety around the two bus stops.

Faith Lutheran Residences

Five new residences are planned for the Faith Lutheran Church property at 1335 Vallecito Place. The five new homes proposed would be one and two-story structures ranging from 2,268 to 2,831 square feet, on newly created lots ranging in size from 7,516 to 10,868 square feet.

Additionally, the parsonage residence would no longer be restricted for use as a church parsonage and would be offered for sale as an affordable unit, pursuant to the City’s Inclusionary Housing Ordinance.

The project has been approved by the Planning Commission and must record its condominium map before building permits can be issued.

HOST Volunteers Wanted!

Bring a friend and join the fun at the 2019 season kick-off meeting of the HOSTs. The meeting will be held, Thursday, May 2 at 6 p.m. in the City Council Chamber at City Hall (5775 Carpinteria Avenue).

If you like sharing your knowledge of Carpinteria, love talking to people, and have a few hours to spare, the HOST Program wants you! Each weekend between Memorial Day and Labor Day the Visitors Kiosk at the Seal Fountain is open Friday-Sunday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Volunteer HOSTs work two hour shifts. During the 2018 season, HOSTs greeted more than 3,000 visitors from over twenty countries.

Upcoming Public Works Projects City to Improve Downtown Parking Area and Cactus Lane

Cactus Lane and the adjacent City parking lot east of Wullbrandt Way (parking lot No. 2) will soon undergo several improvements that include: • Reconstruction of the parking area and a portion of Cactus Lane from Wullbrandt Way to Carpinteria Avenue • Removal of 6 Tipuana trees • Planting of replacement trees The City is also researching the feasibility of undergrounding the overhead utilities along Cactus Lane. It is anticipated that construction could begin as early as Fall 2019.

La Concha Park design work underway

Concept design work for a proposed new park, La Concha Park, located in the 5500 block of Carpinteria Avenue is underway. If approved, the 1/5th of an acre site is large enough to accommodate a variety of park amenities. For more information please contact the Parks Department at (805) 755-4449.

City Hall to Undergo Renovations Carpinteria City Hall will soon undergo various building improvements. The work includes the abatement of asbestos-containing materials as well as various interior and exterior building improvements.

The construction contract was awarded to Quincon Inc. of Grover Beach, CA. The estimated start of construction is April 2019 with a construction schedule of 8 months.

City Provides FREE Recycling Opportunities & Disposal of Hazardous Waste Items

Recycling and properly disposing of hazardous materials are important in helping to ensure a healthy environment. The City of Carpinteria provides both. The City’s ABOP Recycling Facility is located at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Avenue. ABOP is an acronym for Anti-freeze, Batteries, Oil, and Paint, used to describe materials that are collected, at no charge, for recycling throughout the year. Carpinteria City residents can bring in various items, listed below, for recycling or disposal.

New Sidewalk and Extended Bike Lanes on Carpinteria Avenue

Carpinteria Avenue, between Dump Road and 5885 Carpinteria Avenue (Tee Time Driving Range), will soon have approximately 1,000 linear feet of new sidewalk and extended bike lanes. The improvements will include the removal of existing materials in the sidewalk area, an ADA compliant curb ramp and five driveway upgrades for ADA compliance. Additionally, the new design of the curb and gutter provides a physical separation of pedestrian and vehicular traffic as well as facilitates drainage outside of the walk area. Construction is currently underway.

Roadway Improvements Currently Underway

Several sections of roadway throughout the City will undergo maintenance repairs (i.e., crack seal and slurry treatment) over the next several months. These maintenance efforts will assist in improving wear and tear of our roadways and include portions of Casitas Pass Road, Carpinteria Avenue, Via Real (east of Bailard Avenue), Linden Avenue, and Santa Ynez Avenue.

maintenance, completion of more projects included in the City’s Capital Improvement Plan, such as pedestrian safety improvement projects, and greater financial support for local community service providers (in particular, the Carpinteria Library) that are being challenged to continue to meet community needs.

By establishing a conservative spending plan that is less than projected revenue, the City is protected against budget shortfalls. Also, should revenue projections be met or exceeded, a Fund balance will build that can be allocated for occasional one-time expenditures such as a large capital project.

Your City Council has taken the first critical steps in delivering on the promise of Measure X for transparency, equitability and accountability in the use of the new sales tax revenue.

City staff thanks the Council for its leadership and thanks the community for the confidence and support given to the City team. We understand the responsibilities and expectations that come with it and are excited about the work ahead!

Reminder, City Sales Tax Increase Effective April 1

The voter-approved Measure X sales tax became effective April 1, 2019. The total sales tax rate in Carpinteria is now 9%. Carpinteria Partners with Santa Barbara Humane Society

The City of Carpinteria is happy to announce partnering with the Santa Barbara Humane Society to assist in the adoptions of Carpinteria’s local strays. The Humane Society maintains detailed health and temperament profiles on each adoption animal, and will help prospective families make a good match when choosing their new furry companion.

Adoption fees include an initial health examination, vaccines, spay/neuter surgery, temperament evaluation, microchip with registration, and a starter pack of food.

The Santa Barbara Humane Society also offers low-cost vaccinations, deworming, microchipping, nail trims, and spay/neuter services for all dogs. Lifeguard Certification Class At the Community Pool Learn the skills necessary to become a certified pool lifeguard. Class is held at the Community Pool. American Red Cross training includes CPR for the professional Rescuer/AED, and standard First Aid. This blended learning class allows students to combine course work on the computer and hands-on class time.

Community Garden Update

The Carpinteria Garden Park continues to grow, with 104 local households growing their own organic fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers. In preparing for spring, gardeners planted potatoes and garlic, and added another layer of homegrown compost to their beds.

The Garden Park is a community resource.

When the gates are open, feel free to wander in to experience the beauty of a healthy organic garden, and to see what everyone is growing. While individual beds are private property, feel free to gently harvest from the shared spaces of the garden along the street-side fence line.

The Garden Park also hosts many classes which are open to the public and mostly free.

Topics range from basic organic gardening skills to whole foods cooking, backyard beekeeping, and food preservation. And while there is a small wait list for beds, you can get your name on the list by filling out an application found on the website and emailing it to Alena Steen, Garden Coordinator, at alenas@ci.carpinteria.ca.us.

Enjoy Tai Chi and Qigong Classes on the City Beach

For a unique Carpinteria experience, try Tai Chi/Qigong classes on the City Beach adjacent to the lifeguard tower on Linden. Tai Chi and Qigong are slow dance-like movements and exercises that improve balance and flexibility and promote inner peace.

Classes are open to beginners and advanced alike. There is a $15 drop-in fee or $10 per class when a series is purchased.

Instructor Jessica Kolbe is a certified Qigong and Tai Chi trainer and is a proud faculty member of the Esalen Institute and the Santa Barbara City College Center for LifeLong Learning.

Barbecue Reservations

$35 per site Three of our City parks have barbecue areas available for reservations. Each area has two picnic tables and a stationary barbecue. Jumpers are allowed with a paid City Jumper Permit for an additional $10 fee. Contact Maria at (805) 755-4416 to make your reservations.

Please be courteous and clean up after your event.

A refundable $100 cleaning deposit is required per site
