Sheriff asks for help in locating missing Carpinteria teen

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office has requested the public’s assistance in the search for a Carpinteria teenager. On Feb. 1, Eternity Pittman attempted to run away but was returned home. The following day she was dropped off at Carpinteria High School but didn’t return home that evening. She was reported missing by her father that night.

McCord has ties to Omaha, Nebraska and the Los Angeles area.

City cycling class to be held at the Carpinteira Children’s Project

In partnership with the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition (SBBike), a Confident City Cycling class will be held at the Carpinteria Children’s Project on April 13 and 14.

The class is a two-part workshop for riders age 16 and above, who know how to ride a bike, and are looking for instruction to build skills and confidence while learning more about traffic laws in California, crash avoidance, lane positioning and basic bike maintenance. The course will be taught in English and Spanish. The class will be limited to 12 participants, there is a $25 fee, and scholarships are available. For more information call 566-1621.

Body identified in Bluffs fall

The woman who fell from the Carpinteria Bluffs sometime between the night of March 26 and the morning of March 27, when her body was found near the seal rookery, has been identified as 37-year-old Anita Rebecca Ruiz of Santa Barbara. The investigation revealed that Ruiz died as a result of injuries she sustained from a cliff fall. No foul play is suspected. An official cause and manner of death is pending toxicology and lab results. Ruiz was visiting family in Carpinteria and was last seen on Monday evening, March 26.

Class of 1968 plans 50-year reunion

Carpinteria High School will hold a reunion for its first graduating class from the Foothill Campus in a 2-day event on Friday, Oct. 12 and Saturday, Oct. 13, including a tour of the high school and middle school campuses and an evening banquet. Chamber to hold Croatia trip preview

The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce will hold an informational meeting on Thursday, April 12, at 5:30 p.m at the chamber office, 1056 Eugenia Place, Suite B. The trip, scheduled for Oct. 30 to Nov. 6, is designed to give travelers a taste of the history, cuisine and culture of Croatia.

Participants can look forward to seven nights in first-class hotels and sightseeing that includes four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Among the highlights are two nights in Split, an ancient town built by the Romans on the Dalmatian Coast, plus a tour of Diocletian’s Palace. Grassroots effort unleashes next phase in support of dog parks

Carpinteria resident Van Fleisher, who has acted as an unofficial spearhead for the dog park movement, will lead a presentation and discussion on Wednesday, April 11 at 7 p.m. at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club. League of Women Voters hosts forum

The League of Women Voters of Santa Barbara will host a community forum on Wednesday, April 18, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Faulkner Gallery of the Santa Barbara Public Library. The forum will explore the topic of fake news—what it is, where it comes from, how and why it proliferates, how it has changed in recent months and years and what it means for our democracy. Forum speakers will include journalists and experts in the field of fake news. Panelists are: Jerry Roberts, former editor of the San Francisco Chronicle, and current political columnist for The Independent; Lisa Neubert, programming librarian, Santa Barbara Library; Marga Cooley, editor of the Santa Maria Times; and Miriam Medzger, director of the Center for Information, Technology and Society at UCSB. Santa Cruz Island fire nears containment

The Santa Cruz Island fire that ignited Tuesday, March 27, when a prescribed burn went out of control, is now estimated to be 80 percent contained as firefighters continue to make steady progress, according to the National Parks Service. A firefighting crew has been reduced to 26 personnel, who continue to monitor and tend to any remaining hot spots. The public closure for the entire isthmus area of Santa Cruz Island has been lifted allowing all park concession trips by Island Packers to resume landing at Prisoner’s Harbor. Private boaters will be able to land at beaches that had been closed the past few days for fire safety.

Alcazar hosts “Silver Linings in Senior Moments”

The Alcazar Theatre is set to open its spring theatrical season with a compendium of comedic short plays, “Silver Linings in Senior Moments,” running April 6 through April 15. “Silver Linings” features four unique pieces celebrating the humorous side of growing old. Proceeds from this show will benefit the Alcazar’s campaign to upgrade the stage lighting for performances in years to come.

“Straight Men” is the featured one-act play. Written and directed by local playwright and actor Richard Hoag, the play is set in 1955 with two aging vaudevillians living out their humdrum existence in a decrepit actors’ retirement home. Jack (who often rambles on about his glory days) and Tom (self-appointed caregiver for Jack, his longtime stage partner) have a close but often antagonistic relationship.

As the end draws near, unexpected events challenge their friendship, but help them to create a new understanding of their ever-changing roles in life.

In “Beige,” a short play written by Dan Weatherer and directed by the Alcazar’s Asa Olsson, a freshly murdered spouse communicates (much to the horror of his husband) his chagrin at his current state, and hilarity ensues as their relationship continues even after death.

“Good Cop, Sad Cop” features a career criminal who is once again arrested and interrogated, this time around by an emotional, ineffective novice detective.

The short play, written by Rusty Harding and directed by Jordana Lawrence, takes the audience on an amusing rollercoaster of twists and turns.

separately on the same road are the premise of “Rage against Nothing,” written by Greg Freier and directed by Philip Moreno. Paranoia sets in as each driver imagines the intent of the other. A funny and fast-paced short play that takes us down a stretch of highway riddled with imaginary (or are they?) dangers.

New rail line opens for earlybird commuters

By DeBrA HerriCK On Monday, April 2, Pacific Surfliner commenced a new 6:34 a.m northbound train stop at the Carpinteria amtrak station. Ten years in the making, the early rail line pilot program is intended to help alleviate highway congestion. approximately 15,000 ventura county residents commute to Santa Barbara county daily for work. an afternoon southbound line has also been added, with stops down the coast during the peak hours of 4 to 6 p.m.

The Surfliner has the capacity to serve up to 500 passengers. However, before the new early train service came online, The Surfliner was only serving an estimated 50 work commuters on the 10:06 a.m. train. “There is tremendous demand for a commuter line that serves the workforce,” said Deputy executive Director Gregg Hart of the Santa Barbara County association of Governments (SBCaG).

Unfortunately, the trains arrived in Carpinteria nearly an hour late on the first two days of service Monday and Tuesday, april 2 and april 3. The april 4

train arrived nearly a half-hour late. “we are trying to work the bugs out, and the good news is that the train rides home in the afternoon have been seamless,” stated Hart. “So, we’re hoping that the morning ride gets on time and stays on time. it has been distinct problems that we don’t think are going to replicate themselves.

They were completely unrelated, weird one-offs. we are still very excited about the service.”

The cost of the rail pass is intended to be equal or less than the cost of gas at $150 for a monthly pass, $50 for 10 passes and $5 per trip. additionally, SBCaG is offering a free, 10-ride pass to Carpinteria residents for the month of april. To date, 1,200 people have requested promotional 10-ride passes, but only 400 passes have been given so far, with 800 passes still available over the course of the month. “we received a great response to our free-pass offer from people living in Carpinteria, and i am excited to see everyone riding the train,” said Marjie Kirn, executive director of SBCaG.

Natural History Notes

Many gray whales have been observed by volunteers. Gray whales travel about 10,000 to 12,000 miles roundtrip annually from the nursery areas by Baja to summer feeding areas off alaska. Southbound migration is generally December to early February, and northbound migration is February to May. Many whales stay close to shore going northbound, reportedly to protect accompanying calves.

Santa Barbara MTD will host a public outreach meeting in the Carpinteria library Multipurpose room, 5141 Carpinteria ave. MTD invites the public to take a brief survey giving feedback on proposed service changes to local bus service that would go into effect on aug. 20, 2018 and could impact lines 20 and 21x that currently serve Carpinteria. Due to increased congestion and construction on Highway 101 in recent years, line 21x (meant to be an express) can sometimes take longer than the line 20. MTD proposes to improve frequency on the line 20 by suspending the line

21x service and reallocating its resources to the line 20. This reallocation is expected to remain until the Highway 101 Hov lanes are operational. This means that while mid-day frequency on the line 20 would remain at 40 minutes, frequencies in the morning and late afternoon peak times will improve to 15 and 30 minutes. There was some discussion over whether to re-approve the parking exception. Planning commissioners acknowledged that Holly Avenue has parking issues in the area, but ultimately decided that little had changed since the project was originally approved. They suggested that if a restaurant tenant applied for the space, the city re-evaluate the parking situation considering specific needs of the tenant. The standard parking DIF fee is $25,000 per space, but M3 was assessed a lower fee of $5,000, based on a temporary DIF adjustment ordered by the city council that has since expired.

Site plans include landscaping improvements, street trees and a small plaza at the entrance to the commercial space.

The building height will reach a maximum of 30 feet above the commercial and office space and 23 feet above the residential units. Plans are identical to what was originally approved in 2013, and the applicant had already pulled building permits before the planning approval expired in December 2017. Until the late 1990s, the site had been a gas station and auto repair shop, and the soil was remediated.

Planning Commission Chair John Callender said that commercial uses downtown should not necessarily be required to provide an abundance of parking, but parking should be provided for residential units. “On the parking issue, increasingly myself, I find we are trying to get people out of their cars. We have consolidated parking and a walkable downtown neighborhood,” he said.

Return to the Alcazar Theatre: celebrating 90 years

Starting with the Alcazar Theatre in 1928 and continuing as the Plaza Playhouse Theater through 2017, theater history in Carpinteria has primarily revolved around the building on Carpinteria Avenue just west of the intersection at Linden Avenue. The theater has operated under several names, including the Ritz, Del Mar, Trade Winds and the Plaza. It is regarded as a landmark in Carpinteria, as many memories of the community have been made there. With the 90th anniversary of the theater approaching, the Board of Directors of the Carpinteria Community Theater Inc. will return the theater’s name to its roots, the original Alcazar.

The Alcazar Theatre was the brain child of its first proprietor Oliver Bettle Prickett, or Ollie, as he was called. Prickett was a young man of 23 at the theater’s grand opening. He had Hollywood connections, and would later become a well-known movie character actor under the name of Oliver Blake. In regard to the theater in Carpinteria, everything about it comes back to Prickett, who had a vision and a dream.

Prickett arrived in Carpinteria in 1926 and saw a good business opportunity. It was the height of the Roaring Twenties.

Americans brimmed with optimism. In the 1920s, the mountain pass from Ventura, Casitas Pass Road and Maricopa Road, which connects to California’s Central Valley, were all ways to travel by car into Carpinteria, not just along the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Property values were going up, and the word in the local newspaper, the Carpinteria Herald, was that there were fortunes to be made in Carpinteria as the rest of California discovered its wonderful seaside community by its “swimmable” ocean. On September 23, 1927, the Herald reported: “That Carpinteria will be the Mecca of the people of the torrid interior of the state is a foregone conclusion and it remains only for Carpinteria to furnish the accommodations and attractions to reap the benefit of visitors.”

On September 2, 1927, Prickett did his part in Carpinteria’s development by bringing in the movies. The Herald excitedly reported that Prickett, a man with knowledge and connections in the film industry, had rented the old Town Hall which was now the Carpinteria Men’s Club. Screening a film starring Bebe Daniels, The Senorita, Prickett enticed 360 patrons through the doors of the Men’s

Club to view the film over a two-day period. The Herald noted excitedly that Carpinteria was capable of supporting a real movie theater.

Prickett’s Carpinteria theater operated out of the Men’s Club throughout the rest of 1927. Films were screened weekly. The Herald reported on each one with beautiful illustrations. The Men’s Club apparently wasn’t as enthusiastic as the Herald, however, and refused to continue the lease into 1928. We are losing our theater, the Herald agonized under the headline, “Much Regretted.”

Prickett was not to be deterred. He had already begun to envision renovating the Men’s Club into a real movie theater when his lease was abruptly terminated.

According to the Herald, he bought a large tent, worthy of a Barnum & Baily Circus show, and the show went on. With the start of the New Year January 2, 1928, the Carpinteria theater continued operations in the large tent.

The Carpinteria theater would operate out of the tent for only four months. Big things were brewing in Carpinteria as it readied itself to be an entrepreneur’s dream community. C. R. Sawyer one of Carpinteria’s longest residents, sold the tract of land where the theater would eventually stand to Frank E. Dow, a developer who envisioned a business block on it. Henry J. Muller was the next one in, pledging a $62,000 investment to put the Carpinteria theater in the middle of several businesses. During construction, the new theater was called “The Garden of Ollie” after Prickett. The architect, J. W. Young, designed a Spanish-style structure with Moorish features. The theater ’s name was finalized, and the Alcazar Theatre was chosen. Alcazar translates to “The Palace.” Alexander C. D’Alfonso was the builder and he proclaimed it to be “as strong and sturdy as the Rock of Gibraltar.”

And so, the Alcazar Theatre was born on April 27, 1928, coming in at $50,000.

At Hueneme High School, Briggs said, he would ask his colleagues who were having trouble with certain students if they knew anything about the kids. When a teacher builds relationships with their students, he said, the children then know someone is advocating for them. “A red flag (behaviorally) means something is happening,” Briggs noted. “When you dig deeper, you can get them extra support.” Briggs looks forward to leading CMS in part because “with middle schoolers the cement is still wet in their brains” he said.

Warner Oland, Charlie Chan of the movies in the 1930s, and a resident of La Conchita, was one of her co-stars and attended the premiere, as did other Hollywood luminaries. The success of the event launched a venue for films and a variety of other theatrical events that continue to this day.

Club SCene Little Star brings big fun to the Boys & Girls Club

Kids at the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club were delighted by a visit from Little Star the pony. Little Star is an 8-year-old service pony with the nonprofit organization C.A.R.E.4Paws. Trained to work with kids that have special developmental issues or are in hospice, Little Star brings his gentle demeanor to calm and inspire children. “The kids were asked to be careful and quiet, and they were,” said Carlos Abitia, C.A.R.E.4Paws co-founder, “he always inspires compassion, without having to use words, the pony opens up their hearts, and it’s a different way of awakening their emotions.”

Search and rescue team finds its way to Sunset Rotary

on march 28, Rick Stein, a 20-year volunteer with the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue team, joined the Carpinteria Rotary Club Sunset with his certified search dog, MacGyver. Stein discussed the training and certification of the search and rescue dogs, as well as the efforts of the Search & Rescue team. Volunteers are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and respond to search operations throughout the 2,735 square miles of Santa Barbara County. macGyver has been instrumental in locating survivors and victims in the recent mudslide tragedies.

The art of creative volunteering

MISSION POSSIBLE BARBARA DUNLAP Volunteer work and creative ideas go hand-in-hand whenever Rena VanKirk is involved. It started years ago in Ohio when she offered ballroom dancing in schools as a fun alternative to traditional gym classes, and it continues here in Carpinteria.

Last year, VanKirk came up with the concept of Carpinteria Kindness Month, a joyful fundraiser that let people send gifts of candy, flowers and craft beer.

Senders and recipients had a blast, and proceeds benefited HELP of Carpinteria, the nonprofit that provides rides to local residents who don’t drive.

I interviewed VanKirk for a closer look at her active volunteer life.

When you were board president of HELP last year, you initiated Carpinteria Kindness Month in August. How did that happen?

Rena VanKirk: It just came to me. Carp is known for flowers, breweries and chocolate. Why not deliver those local products as a fundraiser? Robataille’s Fine Candies, Island Brewing Company and Ocean Breeze Nursery worked with us to provide the gifts at minimal or no cost. We put an order form in the Coastal View News, or people could go online

to order the gifts. Most people ordered appreciation gifts, and our HELP drivers and extra volunteers delivered them.

It went really well for its first year. It was amazing. We had over 150 orders.

This year we’re hoping for more than that. Recipients were sending gifts back to people who had sent gifts to them. People would show up at my office and say, “Who sent me flowers?” It felt so good, and it was a good fundraiser because HELP doesn’t charge people who need rides. (Donations are voluntary.)

Starting in July, you’ll serve as president of Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning. What are some ways Rotary helps the community?

RV: We have many activities including a Tomol Park cleanup on April 7 (volunteers are welcome), and on May 4, a Casino Night that raises money for the community. Casino Night tickets go on sale this month.

We give back to the community in other ways as well. For instance, we award the Roxanne Nomura Scholarship through the Carpinteria Education Foundation (CEF). Every year we give a dictionary to every third grader in Carpinteria. We also sell Carpinteria calendars and divvy up the proceeds among 10 nonprofits in the area.

In your job as the executive administrator of the Avocado Festival, you work with many volunteers. Can you talk a little about their contribution—and about the festival’s contribution to Carpinteria?

RV: We couldn’t do it without the volunteers. The board members and the committee chairs are all volunteers, and

Why do think Carpinteria is a special place to live and volunteer?

RV: I love the small-town feel. I grew up in a small town, and when I found Carpinteria, it felt like home. I think everybody here wants to help everybody else.

I haven’t run across anyone who doesn’t lend a helping hand. It’s amazing how much love and spirit there is.

What I also like about the festival is that it gives nonprofits and school groups in our town a platform to raise money for themselves. Parking fees at the high school go to Junior Warriors football.

Money from beer tips goes to scholarships for CEF. Proceeds from the expo tent go to Future Farmers of America.

Why do you enjoy volunteering?

RV: I like the way it makes people feel.

Community garden wins April “Lookin’ Good Award” PHOTOS BY ROBIN KARLSSON

Carpinteria Beautiful has awarded the new Carpinteria Garden Park with the April “Lookin’ Good Award”. The Carpinteria Garden Park is a community garden located next to the Amtrak parking lot on Fifth Street. The garden is home to raised beds that provide 100 community members with space to grow organic fruits, vegetables and flowers. The newest project of the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, the garden is open to the public while garden members are present. Strolling through, one encounters lush spring growth in all of the beds, with cool season crops such as kale, sugar snap peas and lettuce sprawling over the edges. In addition, there is a small fruit tree orchard, as well as native plantings for beneficial pollinators. A small office, housed in an early 1900s freight-weighing station, includes rainwater harvesting cisterns and solar panels to power the garden.

The garden hosts classes that are free and open to the public on topics such as organic gardening, nutrition and composting, as well as art classes for kids. For more information, visit the garden’s web site at carp-garden.com, or explore the garden at the upcoming open house on Friday, April 6, from 3 to 6 p.m. There will be live music, garden-inspired refreshments and fun activities for kids.

Cate School boys volleyball finds its groove

The Cate School boys volleyball team is off and running, and continuing to improve under first-year coach K.C. Collins.

On Tuesday afternoon, April 3, the Rams hosted Santa Clara in a non-league match up on Cate Mesa. The Rams pounded the Saints 25-18, 25-18 and 25-13 on their way to a three-game sweep. The victory gives Cate a 3-1 record on the season.

“We opened the season against Malibu; we struggled with our passing and serving,” said Collins. “So, when we went back to the practice court we knew what we needed to work on, and they’ve been diligently working on it,” explained Collins. For the Rams, practice made perfect as sophomores Theo Mack (30) and Ethan Ng (21); along with junior Carson Williams (26) batted 1.000, converting 10 out of 10 kills, collectively, to capture the first game of the match.

Mack ended up with five kills on five attempts on the outside, while middles Carson Williams and Ethan Ng contributed three-for-three and two-for-two respectively, with each adding a block.

In sets two and three, Cate got a look at freshmen Albert Barber (9), swinging on the right side, and Ryan Suh (8) debuting as a libero. Barber, who normally plays the libero spot, added two kills, and Suh would pick up five digs while passing at a 2.0 percentage. “The chemistry on the court was great tonight, the boys played steady and supported each other through several line-up changes and kept up a strong, competitive energy throughout the match,” said Collins.

Junior setter Sebastian Richardson (25) helped set the pace early in the match.

“Sebastian started setting a lot mid-season last year and now he’s focused on the skill work of it, and being smart on the placement,” explained Collins. Cate also got some strong play from junior outside hitter Cullen Barber (24) whose string of serves put the Rams up 20-11 during the second match. Junior Raja Promige (3) also got some playing time for the Rams, and when senior Ian MacFarlane’s (28)

Her team’s performance resulted in an overall passing mark of 2.34 and a .423 hitting average—both highs on the season. “I made some adjustments on the court (earlier in the season), and they helped each other on where to go and where to be. It seems seamless but it wasn’t,” explained Collins, whose team is still adjusting to their assignments.

Carpinteria High School

March 30 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team lost a non-league match to the number-two ranked in Division II Arroyo Grande Eagles, 17-1 on the road. “This is the third-straight year that we have lost by that exact score and the third year in a row that Jeremy Saito was our lone point winner,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Saito fell in two sets by the identical scores of 6-3; but down 4-1, came back to win five-straight games to capture the victory. “Overall, I was really pleased with how we played and if we have to lose by that wide of a margin for a while, then it will be worth it in the long run because I really felt we came out of there much better than when we started,” concluded Bryant.

March 31 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team defeated Cabrillo (Lompoc) in a non-league match, 15-3. “In singles, Myles Morgan was outstanding. His second set against a high-quality opponent was the best I have ever seen him play,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Carlos Costilla went 2-1 and Esteban Zapata went 1-1 to round out Carpinteria’s singles scoring. In doubles, Solomon Nahooikaika went 1-0 with his usual partner Kirby Zapata and then teamed up with Tony Ochoa to win the last two sets. His brother, Luke Nahooikaika also went 3-0 with two different partners, winning a pair of matches with Cameron Gralewski and his final set with Ian McCurry. J.R. Hajducko/Steve Poulos went 2-1.

Baseball

March 30 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team dropped their final game of the Santa Paula Cardinal Classic Baseball Tournament at Tom Moore Field against the host Santa Clara Saints by a score of 19-10. Dominic Sturdivan was the leader on offense as he collected four hits, including two doubles, while driving in four runs. Chase Mayer and Toby Spach each had three hits, scored two runs and had a pair of RBI with one of Spach’s hits being a triple. The Warriors got to an early 6-2 lead and rapped out 16 hits, but the Saints were able to combine 11 hits with 13 walks, three errors and two hit batsmen to come away with the win. “Being the fourth game in three days, we knew it would be this type of game,” said Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney whose team is now 3-5 overall.

Track and field

March 28 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team took on Cate with both the boys and girls teams emerging victorious. The Warrior boys tallied 78 to the Rams’ 37, while the girls bested the Rams’ coeds, 63 to 46. Carpinteria’s Roderick Hutchinson was the only double individual winner for the Warrior boys, winning both the long jump at 19 feet, five-and-a-quarter inches and the high jump at five feet, two inches. Ben Medel won the 300-meter hurdles in the first hurdle race of his career, and was a member of the winning four x 400m relay team. Marcos Alpizar won the 400 and was also part of the victorious relay squad. On the girls side, Chloe Singer was the only double winner for the girls, as she won both the high jump, clearing over four feet and the pole vault, going up and over the seven-foot mark. Alejandra Cardona set a new personal record to win the 100 hurdles in 18.84 seconds.

Girls lacrosse

March 29 – The Cate School girls lacrosse picked up a 20-0 win at Dunn. “Freshmen Taylor Kane, Lilly Reihl (two goals, three assists) and Josie Erickson (two goals) all played the majority of the game,” said Rams coach Renee Mack. Sophomores Piper Brooks (one goal, one assist), Hannah Biles, Maya Fenelon, Mia Foster, Kenzie Davidson (two goals, one assist) and Eliza Borghesani all contributed at least a goal, an assist or a save. “Our usual midfield suspects, Brie (Walker), Maddie (Erickson) and Daphne (McKeefry), led the team with composure and endless encouragement as they helped improve the team game IQ,” said Mack. Cate hosts San Marcos, Thursday, April 5, and the top team, Palos Verdes on Friday, April 6.

April 3 – The Cate School girls lacrosse team beat Santa Barbara, 12- 4. Brie Walker tallied seven goals and distributed two assists. Maddie Erickson registered three goals and one assist, while Daphne McKeefry and junior Tessa Denison pitched in a goal apiece. Lilly Riehl collected two assists on the day, and Liza Borghesani made three saves on defense. “Another junior, Andreah Graf, with a solid left and right stick, also left her mark on the field on attack,” said Rams coach Renee Mack. “The game was not a team best, we had difficulty connecting our passes, picking up ground balls, communicating on defense and winning the draw,” explained Mack.

March 29 – The Cate School boys volleyball team beat Nordhoff three games to one. “Junior Carson Williams came out strong from the middle tonight, knocking down eight kills, clamping on four blocks and serving tough, recording one ace,” said Rams coach K.C. Collins. Sophomore Jackson Weinberger, on the right side, scooped up three digs and recorded one assist, while junior Sebastian Richardson chalked up five digs, one block and one service ace. On the outside, junior Cullen Barber charted nine kills and nine digs; and sophomore Theo Mack notched double digits in both, 19 kills and 14 digs, while both contributed some service aces, blocks and passes throughout the match. “Super fun match, both teams came out to play and the sets went point-for-point with Cate taking the match 25-18, 20-25, 25-17, 2520,” said Collins.

Baseball

March 30 – The Cate School baseball team suffered its first loss of the season when the Rams went to Canoga Park and dropped a 7-6 contest to Faith Baptist. Freshman William Deardorff had two hits for Cate, while senior Emily Burns and junior McCarthy Willett each had one. Freshman Daniel Panadero lined a double, and drove in two for the Rams. Junior Jack Deardorff got the start for the Rams, the right hander went five and 1/3 innings, striking out four. He was relieved by Dalton Phillips who went the final two-thirds of the game, and also singled for Cate. “I’m very pleased with our effort today, we were just a few plays away from knocking off the defending CIF-SS (Division VII) champions,” said assistant coach Dave Soto.

April 3 – The Cate School baseball team picked up a road win, as the Rams went into Fillmore and took down the Flashes by a 6-1 score. It was an offensive team attack, as the Rams tallied nine hits on the afternoon with junior Jack Deardorff going two-for-four with an RBI, while senior Patrick Armstrong delivered a two RBI single and finished the day one-for-three. Freshman Daniel Panadero had an RBI single on a one-for-four day, and fellow freshman William Deardorff had Cate’s only extra base hit of the day with a double. Cate sophomore right hander Dalton Phillips went the distance, giving up four hits and three walks, while striking out three. “He was helped out by great defensive plays from Deardorff, class of ’19, Emily Burns class of ‘18 and Ethan Cassulo, class of ‘19,” said Rams assistant Dave Soto. The victory pushes Cate to 3-1 on the season.

Softball

April 3 – The Carpinteria High School softball team lost 13-6 to top-ranked Santa Clara. The Warriors were able to score three runs in the third on three hits, an error and a walk on Isabel Studt’s two-run triple to right center field. Studt then came home on a single by Samantha Saenz which put the Warriors up 3-2 after three. Carpinteria, then pushed across two runs in the bottom half of the fourth on two walks, a passed ball and single. The single by Raquel Cordero scored Mikayla Blair and Studt who had walked. The Warriors overall are 5-2 and are yet to begin League play.

March 28 – The Cate School swim team came up short against Foothill Tech in the opening meet of the year. Tilly Bates finished second in the 200-meter Individual Medley, and first in the 500 Freestyle. Victor Vasquez, Kaiser Ke and Andre Pincot swam the boys 200 Medley Relay, and Marcos Brasil finished first with a CIF consideration time. In the 200 Free, Sebastian Sak finished first and in the 50 and 100 Free, Brasil finished first again. Pincot finished first in the 100 Butterfly, and Ke also took first in the 100 Breaststroke. In the 400 Free Relay Sak, Brasil, Jet Ochea and Pincot received another CIF consideration and won the event.

March 29 – The Cate School boys tennis team battled Nordhoff with the Rangers walking off the courts with a 10-8 win. The Rams number-one Ethan Ha led the team with a clean sweep at the number-one singles without dropping a game. Cate’s number-one doubles, Charlie Morris and Carter Melnick, finished their day winning two sets. Number-two singles Joseph Thomassen also picked up two wins. “Nordhoff played great, and they are much improved from last year,” Cate coach Jason Ebin commented. Cate falls to 1-3 for the season and 1-1 in the Tri-Valley League play.

April 3 – The Cate School boys tennis team traveled to Dos Pueblos in non-league action, falling in Goleta, by a score of 12-6. “Cate Number-one singles Ethan Ha continued to impress, dropping just two games on his way to winning all three of his sets,” said Rams coach Jason Ebin. Cate senior and Number-two singles Joseph Thomassen added two more sets for the Rams. Cate returns to league action on Thursday, April 5, when they will face-off against Thacher in Ojai.

Track and field student athlete junior Elle Smith of Cate School was named as Athlete of the Week, sharing the honor with Dos Pueblos baseball player Dylan Kelley on Monday, April 2, at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Luncheon. Smith, who recently led the Ram girls basketball team to the semifinal round of the CIF-SS Division 5-A playoffs, won the 100- and 200-meter sprints in a dual meet against Carpinteria last week. Smith went on a scoring and rebounding rampage during last season’s tournament, as Cate fell short of beating Oakwood (North Hollywood), the eventual 5-A champions, by a score of 47-41.

Junior Warriors to train for speed and agility

The Junior Warriors begin speed and agility training practices for girls and boys ages 5 to 17 on Sunday, April 8, at Monte Vista Park from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Continuing until football starts in June, the free training sessions will be held on Mondays and Thursdays from 5 to 6:30 p.m., in addition to Sunday morning practices. No experience is needed to participate, and the only required equipment is workout clothes and cleats. Parents are responsible for drop-off and pick-up times, and must sign a waiver. Yoga studio relocates to Carpinteria

Evolation Yoga has moved its studio from Summerland to Carpinteria. The new studio at 5320 Carpinteria Ave., Suite F, will offer 35 to 40 classes per week, including hot, warm, non-heated flow and kids classes. Evolation Yoga originally opened in Buffalo N.Y. before relocating to California. The Carpinteria-based studio is the hub and only location owned by the founders of Evolation Yoga, now a network of over 50-affiliated yoga studios worldwide. The studio will also serve as a teacher-training site to an estimated 60 or 70 international teachers each year. Business partners Astrid McNellis and Mark Drost live in Santa Barbara and Montecito, respectively, and many of their teachers are local to Carpinteria. “Bottom line is we’re super excited to be part of and serving this tight-knit community,” said McNellis, “We feel that with the deep experience of our team and our variety of classes (hot, flow and yin), we will serve the community well.”

Island Brew releases craft beer in support of Pink Boots Society

Spring is in the air and with it comes a new beer from Island Brewing Company—a special release of a single batch brew, the Hibiscus Sunrise Pilsner. The local brewery joined many other breweries around the country participating in the Pink Boots Collaboration Brew, a women-empowering craft beer brewing experience. pink Boots Society is a non-profit organization created to assist, inspire and encourage women beer industry professionals to advance their careers through education. As a member of the Pink Boots Society, Island Brewing Company’s general manager Laurie Matthews wanted to include as many women as possible in the brewing process. hibiscus Sunrise pilsner will be released on April 5. The beer features three pounds of Gold Nugget Mandarin zest from fruit grown on Rincon Mountain, and five gallons of liquid from steeped and strained Hibiscus flowers for a refreshing beer with 4.3 percent ABV and 25 iBu’s. A portion of the funds from beer sales will go to the Pink Boots Society. Hibiscus Sunrise Pilsner will be available on tap and in cans and growlers at Island Brewing Company.

“Cod: A Biography of the Fish that Changed the World”

Alternating between humor, data and the sadness that comes with the decline of a species, the author weaves a captivating history of an unglamorous fish—the cod.

This biography of a fish may as well be a world history with the cod as its main character. Cod, it turns out, is the reason Europeans set sail across the Atlantic, and it is the only reason they were able to do so. The Vikings ate it in icy Greenland and on expeditions to America recorded in Icelandic sagas. Frozen and dried, then broken into pieces, it was eaten like hardtack. I was surprised to learn it was a staple of the medieval diet, sold salted by the enigmatic Basques, with a mysterious, unlimited supply of cod. And so it was, for centuries of cod history, and then in the all too common story of environmental failure, cod fishing stocks were depleted where once their numbers were unimaginable.

A collection of six centuries of Cod Recipes keeps one reading straight to the end. Lutefisk, anyone?

Originally from San Diego, Amiga Lopez, a 5-month-old Weimaraner, now resides in Carpinteria with her adopted parents Katie and Julian. Friendly and playful, Amiga is a typical puppy who loves to be around other dogs and kids. Her favorite spots are the beach and dog parks.
