Voter-approved sales tax takes effect

The sales tax increase approved by voters last fall went into effect on April 1, raising the rate within city limits from 7.75 to 9 percent. Projected to raise around $2.1 million dollars annually, the city of Carpinteria has stated that the additional tax revenue will be used to fund overdue maintenance of sidewalks and roadways, park improvements and important local services such as the Carpinteria Library.

Planners approve Highway 101 widening

The Carpinteria Planning Commission reviewed and approved proposed U.S. Highway 101 improvements on April 1 for the fourth and final phase of the South Coast 101 HOV Lanes Project. This phase will add a third vehicle lane to both the north- and south-bound sides of the freeway from Bailard Avenue to the westernmost edge of the city near Cravens Lane. Caltrans is working to obtain a separate approval from Santa Barbara County to continue the project up to Hot Springs Road near Montecito.

In addition to the new HOV lanes, the project includes improvements to some intersections at the entrance to freeway on- and off-ramps. At a March 5 hearing, commissioners voted to continue the matter to their next meeting due to concerns related to a proposed four-way stop sign at Carpinteria and Reynolds avenues. At the April 1 meeting, the commission approved a revision in which annual traffic monitoring will be conducted and a four-way stop sign or stoplight will be considered only when traffic volumes meet a specific threshold.

FEMA considers flood mapping change along Garrapata Creek

According to a letter from Santa Barbara County Public Works Department Flood Control, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is considering a flood mapping change along Garrapata Creek being pursued by the owners of the properties 3250-3282 Via Real who propose to develop their property.

FEMA produces flood maps nationwide that depict special flood hazard areas for community planning, guiding development and establishing flood insurance premiums. An engineering consultant hired by the Via Real developers have submitted to FEMA a map that shows changes to the limits of the special flood hazard areas and the base flood elevations resulting from the Garrapata Creek. If the remapping is approved, it would remove the 3250-3282 parcels from the flood hazard area, while adding other properties not currently in the flood hazard area including residences in Serena Tract neighborhood.

FEMA’s determination of flood hazard areas has serious implications pertaining to the need for mandatory flood insurance coverage as required by federal regulations when securing a federally insured mortgage.

After reviewing the proposal, FEMA will determine if they agree with the remapping on a technical basis, and if so, they will publish a “letter of map revision” within six weeks. The letter then triggers a 90-day public review and comment period—effectively a time for appeals to be filed. If no changes result, the new map will be adopted officially. Children’s Day/Book Day comes to town

In 1996, Pat Mora learned about the traditional Mexican Día de los Niños, a festive day dedicated to children. Mora started a successful initiative to celebrate it in the United States, but with the added purpose of connecting it to family literacy for all children and their families. Children’s Day/Book Day will be celebrated in Carpinteria on Saturday, April 27, at the Carpinteria Children’s Project, 5201 8th St., from noon to 3 p.m. There will be entertainment, including the Rose Marie Cruz Dancers, Mariachi Inlakech, a book reading by award-winning author, Amada Irma Perez, and more.

There will be children’s crafts, refreshments, face-painters, additional local children’s authors, a book giveaway and other fun activities. Foley Claffey resigns from CUSD school board

By DeBra HerriCk In an email addressed to Carpinteria and Summerland residents dated March 31, Maureen Foley Claffey resigned from the Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Education, effective immediately. In her statement, Foley Claffey cited medical reasons for her resignation.

Carpinteria economy shows continued signs of strength Chamber of Commerce holds State of the Community and Economic Forecast luncheon

Business and civic leaders from across Carpinteria Valley received good news at the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s State of the Community and Economic Forecast luncheon at Rincon Beach Club on March 26. Ahead of the release of the 2019 Carpinteria Economic Profile, Mark Schniepp, director of California Economic Forecast, pleased the crowd with several findings that indicate strong economic health for the region.

The report, commissioned by the city of Carpinteria, will be published in its entirety at the end of the month.

In summary, Schniepp stated that job growth was stellar in 2018, showing “continued strength in 2019.” Commercial and residential spaces are sparse in both rentals and sales markets, with not much new development in the valley. While the visitor industry continues to flourish, “technology is the engine of growth in Carpinteria,” said Schniepp.

At the end of 2018, there were 7,200 employed residents and 9,500 jobs, an increase in both the labor market and job openings. Just under 300 new jobs were created in 2018, more than the region has seen in at least a dozen years. Among the largest employers in Carpinteria Valley are Procore (850), Carpinteria Unified School District (365), LinkedIn (312), Nusil (284) and Agilent (250). At the same time, Carpinteria has an unemployment rate of 4.5 percent, 0.7 points above the national average.

In 2018, five hotels in Carpinteria (nearly 600 rooms) were occupied on average 69.8 percent of the time, with a

total annual revenue of $22 million. The occupancy rate is steady with the year before, but well-below averages achieved in 2015 and 2016 which reached above 73 percent.

Carpinteria State Beach had nearly 900,000 visitors bringing in $3.4 million in direct fees to the State Park and $30 mil-

lion to city vendors. The city saw roughly $123 million in taxable sales in 2018.

Overall, despite ebb and flow overtime, most economic indicators are firm or rising, according to Schniepp. The complete 2019 Carpinteria Economic Profile will be released at the end of April.

Poisons and playgrounds don’t mix

I was dismayed today to spot a sign explaining that the grounds at Carpinteria Middle School had been sprayed with a weed killer that contains glyphosate (an herbicide also found in Round Up which has been identified by the World Health Organization as a probable cancer-causing poison). This, just as a federal jury in San Francisco awarded $80 million to a man who sued Monsanto arguing that glyphosate caused his non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Thousands more cases are working their way through the courts. We are way behind the curve. Glyphosates have been banned in other countries.

Besides the health of our children, there are many other reasons to mow, mulch or pull weeds. Glyphosate has been associated with the steep decline of monarch butterflies. It harms honeybees and other pollinators and works its way up food chains to threaten birds trying to eke out a living. Spring is a time for flowers and bees, not billowing clouds of chemical herbicides sprayed by men in moon suit coveralls. I am grateful to the many organic farmers in our area who try to maintain a safe and healthy environment.

We should all strive to be more organic.

There is no place in Carpinteria for poisons—least of all in our schoolyards.

A park for people with dogs

As I was returning from the mailbox where I had just mailed off my property tax check, I decided to add my two cents to the dog park issue. I am retired. I do not have children, I do not play soccer or baseball, I do not barbeque or have birthday parties. I do, however, have a dog. My dog is an important part of my life. I live close to El Carro Park and my dog and I enjoy our walks there. I would like to bring my dog to a dog park in El Carro Park where she can run around and socialize with other dogs while I talk to like-minded owners.

Why are my interests of less importance than the interests of the others that use this park? I do not begrudge them that they may not all be homeowners and have to pay massive property tax bills to support schools, parks and other services in Carpinteria. But I do feel that my use of the park should be acknowledged, and an attempt made to meet my needs, and the wishes of many others like myself who would benefit from such a park.

School cuts, raise your voice

Teachers, parents, students, Carpinteria community: the Carpinteria Unified School District is proposing cuts for $1.1 million. Instructional aides, librarians, custodians, bus drivers, Carpinteria High School athletics professionals, will all have their hours reduced.

Academic achievement is down. Test scores are down 15 percent. Administration costs in hiring and salaries are increasing. No district admin cuts are being proposed; this is totally unfair.

These major cuts to the education of our children will affect their test scores again. As a parent of a daughter in the school district, I do not agree with these major cuts. If you disagree as well, please show up on April 9 at 5:30 p.m. for the next school board meeting. Let your voice be heard.

Cannabis boogeyman

Findings from the Sheriff’s Annual Crime Report were published in last week’s CVN (“Crime rates are down,” Vol. 25, No. 27). Takeaway: crime has gone down across the board. Also, last week, the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce hosted its State of the Community Luncheon, at which Dr. Mark Schniepp of California Economic Forecast reported on the economic wellness of Carpinteria. He indicated that property values have continued to climb. It’s now $1.2 million for a single-family home.

So, crime has gone down, and property values have increased. This begs a question: Has the cannabis boogeyman lost it power? According to those opposed to cannabis, property values have plummeted and crime has surged. That’s the very opposite of the facts.

Schniepp also reported on the top employers in the valley. Procore led the way with 850 employees (bravo). The number of employees in the cannabis industry doesn’t get ranked because jobs are spread over several employers.

In just the CARP Growers association, member farms have over 600 employees, which would potentially make cannabis the second largest employer in Carpinteria Valley. That’s a big part of the local

workforce.

Cannabis has not caused a crime wave or lowered property values, but it is part of a healthy economy. There are a lot of holes in the arguments of those opposed to cannabis farming. I don’t discount people’s passions, but has the time come to heal the divide and invite anti-cannabis activists back to reality and back to a healthy and happy community?

We have lived on Foothill Road since 1976, and for 43 years we’ve respectfully shared the neighborhood with our farmer neighbors. We’re extremely alarmed by the mission of Concerned Carpinterians that states, “We will actively monitor and remedy Commercial Cannabis practices that adversely impact our residents.” As private law-abiding residents, we do not support any citizen group monitoring or conducting any form of surveillance in our neighborhood. They’re parking on our corner for hours, logging whatever they’re logging, and flying drones over private property. This invades our privacy and quality of life. We have not signed the Concerned Carpinterians petition, nor any neighbors that we know of.

In reviewing their website, neither a list of supporters nor neighborhoods in which

they monitor is available.

Santa Barbara County policy makers, staff, law enforcement, advisors, industry and the public have invested thousands upon thousands of planning hours in the development and implementation of a highly regulated Cannabis Ordinance.

We’re confident in the county’s ability to manage the licensing process and the Sheriff’s Cannabis Compliance Team to professionally monitor, investigate and crackdown on any and all unlawful industry owners.

Concerned Carpinterians are relentlessly bogging down Santa Barbara County’s departments with their strategic complaint and appeal filings. This behavior appears both economically and socially irresponsible. They are wasting hundreds of thousands of tax-payer dollars under the guise that they know best.

I ask that Concerned Carpinterians cease and desist from declaring themselves our local representatives and from monitoring our neighborhoods; this is not only potentially unlawful, but extremely intrusive and unethical.

Cesarean Awareness Month

April is designated Cesarean Awareness Month by the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN). There’s been a lot written and publicized lately about state of maternal health in the U.S. Our statistics aren’t good. Two of the reasons are the overuse of Cesareans without full education of the risks, and the lack of access to a VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean). ICAN-SB, our local chapter, is hosting a panel on April 12 to raise awareness of the issues and discuss evidence-based care. As a cesarean and VBAC mom, I found the information crucial to making informed decisions.

We have the right to informed-consent and refusal, and as consumers, we must assume more responsibility for our own births.

Raymond Arthur Cole 9/30/1930 – 4/23/2019

Ray was born in London, England on Aug. 30, 1930 and died in Santa Barbara, California on March 23, 2019. He came to the United States in 1946 with his mother and stepfather. Ray graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in journalism. He worked in the world of advertising, ending his career as the Director of Sales and Marketing for Sunkist. Ray served in the U.S. Army 11th Battalion from 1950–1953.

Ray met Mary Jane Larsen while living in Seattle and they married in 1954. They settled in Southern California where they raised their family, moving to Carpinteria in retirement. Ray and Mary had many dear friends, traveled worldwide and were up for any adventure, including square dancing!

A talented artist, Ray was known for his detailed watercolors of life in Carpinteria. His book, “The Delights of Carpinteria,” included many of these paintings. He was commissioned by many in Carpinteria to paint scenes personal to them. He was a lover of words and completed crossword puzzles (the hard ones!) until his death. He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, bird watching from his living room windows and playing cards.

Always active in the community where he and his family lived, over the years Ray served on the Wiseburn and Conejo Valley Unified School Boards and as the president of the Silver Sands Village Mobile Home Park Board of Directors.

Ray was predeceased by his wife Mary and is survived by his daughter Tracy Serrato (husband Noe) of Maricopa, Arizona, son Greg Cole (wife Beth Fairbairn) of Napa, California, his grandchildren Brandi, Sophia and Larsen, his brother Clifford Cole of England, sister-in-law Alice Larsen of Carpinteria and the rest of his beloved family by marriage. Ray leaves behind friends from all stages of his life; he had the gift of striking up a conversation with anyone he met.

Ray’s family is forever grateful to the dedicated caregivers and friends whose assistance and love allowed Ray to live independently in his home by the sea until his final illness.

If you would like to honor Ray with a donation, please consider The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center or Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital Foundation. A celebration of Ray’s life will be held at a later date.

SCHOOL NOTES VIEWPOINT CAUSE leadership reads the numbers differently

BY JAY HOTCHNER, PRESIDENT CARPINTERIA ASSOCIATION OF UNITED SCHOOL EMPLOYEES Last week, Carpinteria Unified School District (CUSD) Superintendent Diana Rigby, presented a series of economic figures that might lead the casual reader to the following conclusion: The sky (over CUSD) is falling! Emergency action is required!

It must be spring, because the annual season of budgetary fear-mongering is here again. Many CUSD staff and faculty have come to anticipate these inflated claims of “crisis,” which are routinely exaggerated to justify otherwise unnecessary actions. As this strategic narrative is spun, Carpinteria is again advised that CUSD is going broke and threats of insolvency can only be avoided by swift administrative action.

Sorry, but we’re not buying it.

For years, employees and families watched CUSD peddle this same tangled tale in an effort to justify unnecessary budget cuts and politically advantageous pet-projects. This year is no different. Over $1 million in new cuts (to resources that directly serve students and families) are being recommended: CHS and CMS after school programs; CHS athletics; transportation/bus services; K-8 fieldtrips; instructional-aides across the district; librarian positions and hours of operation; custodial hours/district health and sanitation services; safety preparedness initiatives and secretarial support at school sites.

Claims that CUSD must double (even triple) cash reserves mandated by the state only add to the contrived crisis. While significant salary increases were awarded the superintendent and other administrative positions in 2018, they maintain their personal professional trajectory by cutting resources critical to teaching and learning in Carpinteria.

Examples include: 1) In her February column, “Reading is key” (“From the superintendent’s desk,” Vol. 25, No. 23), Rigby explained that reading and literacy are paramount to students’ success. One month later, she recommended reducing elementary librarian services by half.

2) Throughout 2017-18, Rigby acknowledged that kindergarten instructional-aides were critical to a full-day kindergarten program, but the district provided only half the aide hours promised for 2018-19. Further aide cuts are recommended for 2019-20.

3) Although our community has invested millions (i.e. MEASURE U) in CUSD’s infrastructure development, the superintendent recommends further cuts to custodial services that maintain CUSD’s sites and facilities. (Note: Sanitation and hygiene in CUSD have reached historic lows, as indicated by recent staff surveys, student surveys and county health inspections.)

4) Although the district cut over 30+ instructional-aide positions in 2018, it increased the number of administrative personnel who do not work with students, further reducing the workload of already well compensated upper-management.

5) While Rigby failed to meet all three stated professional objectives in 2017-18, the school board provided her a positive evaluation based on her fiscalconservancy.

6) CUSD continues to suffer from autocratic leadership resistant to collaboration. While advising the community that improved administration/faculty relationships are a priority, the superintendent has entirely ignored experiences shared by CUSD’s employee union (i.e. the only elected representatives of employees).

Currently, the “values” of district leadership are in conflict with those who work directly with students. In turn, the success of our children and the efficacy of the entire educational system is undermined.

As long as this continues, the business of educating Carpinteria’s youth will suffer from the erratic and impulsive winds of politically fashionable philosophies and budget policies that primarily serve the professional trajectory of select district leadership.

MTD’s new fleet arrives in Carpinteria

Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) has retired the old electric shuttle fleet that formerly served the Carpinteria downtown area. The older fleet was past their useful life of 12 years, with some approaching 20 years of age, according to Hillary Blackerby, interim planning and marketing manager for MTD. The company that built the old fleet went out of business years ago, An MTD state-of-the art electric shuttle and they were being maintained cruises through town.

The third annual “Tractors, Trucks and Trolleys, Oh My!” event benefiting the Carpinteria Education Foundation, Inc. and Cate Early Learning Center, will be held at Carpinteria High School, 4810 Foothill Road, on Saturday, April 20, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tickets cost $5 per person (kids 1 and under free) and children will be allowed to climb aboard fire engines, construction equipment and trollies to sound the horns and ring bells. A sensory-sensitive horn-free hour will be observed from 11 a.m. to noon.

Wine ‘n Waves splashes for Summerland School

The Wine ‘n Waves benefit for Summerland School will be held at the Summerland Winery, 2330 Lillie Ave., Summerland, on Sunday, April 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets cost $50 or $90 for two, and include a commemorative glass, one glass of wine, a raffle ticket, appetizers and live music by the Art of Funk band. The same man cited on Linden Avenue on Monday, March 25, for an open container of alcohol, was again cited for having an open container and the alcohol was poured out.

Deputies responded to a report of a man who was not a guest of a motel, causing a disturbance and attempting to get into a room. He was no longer on scene when deputies arrived, but a man fitting the description given returned just as deputies were leaving. Deputies detained the man, who advised them that he had a loaded shotgun behind his seat. Deputies had the man exit the vehicle and located a loaded 12-gauge shotgun behind the driver’s seat, wrapped in a pillow case.

The man was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

A man was seen lurking around with a flashlight. He was detained and became agitated and made statements that he had warrants and did not want to go to jail. The man was seated on the curb and attempted to flee, but was restrained by a deputy until additional units arrived and he was handcuffed. The man had two misdemeanor warrants and was booked on the warrants and an additional charge of attempting to flee.

It was reported that a man with a warrant was at his house on Carpinteria Avenue. Deputies conducted a warrant service, arrested him without incident and booked the man at Santa Barbara County Jail.

A detective had sent out a “Be on the Lookout” for a man and woman who were suspects in the grand theft of avocados and cherimoyas. At approximately 7:16 p.m. a caller reported seeing the pair in a red truck on Casitas Pass Road.

A deputy located the man alone on the side of the road and detained him. While additional deputies were en route, the deputy on scene reported that the woman had just driven past him in the red truck.

Most locals know that Summerland was founded by Spiritualists. It was just before the turn of the twentieth century when the novel idea of communicating with the dead had a grip on the continent.

Founder Henry Lafayette Williams laid out the town laid in tiny tent-sized lots to encourage campers to attend revivals and séances.

Now Leslie Person Ryan, proprietor of Letter Perfect in downtown Summerland, will be staging an event that pays tributes to the town’s colorful past. On April 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., she will be hosting author Rod Lathim, who has just released a new edition of his book “The Spirit of the Big Yellow House: A History of Summerland’s Founding Family.”

Lathim will sign copies of his book and talk about his close encounters with a spirit named Hector who haunted the wine cellar of the building now known as the Big Yellow House.

Joining Lathim will be the Reverend Pamela Bollinger of the Church of the Comforter in Santa Barbara. The Church of the Comforter, founded by Summerland Spiritualists more than a century ago, moved to Santa Barbara after Summerland became an oil town.

According to Ryan, Bollinger will be “calling all Summerland Spirits that will be available to visit us.” Hmm, I wonder if my old column “The Summerland Spirit” that I wrote for The Carpinteria Herald will answer the call?

Grand Jury anyone

A friend currently serving on the Grand Jury informed me that applications are now open for next year’s jury. FYI, the jury functions as kind of a watchdog over local government agencies, cities and special districts. Jurors also inspect detention facilities and review county financial records.

Grand Jurors pretty much decide every year what their focus will be, and this may include several different areas. One of the things the 2017-18 jury investigated, for example, was the use of Measure U funds at Carpinteria Children’s Project at Main School. Their conclusion was that funds were properly used.

Applications can be submitted from April to May 3. Nineteen jurors are chosen, and the only requirements are that applicants be county residents, citizens, at least 18 years old, with sound judgement and sufficient English. Oh yes, and no felonies. Go to sbcgj.org to learn more.

Train deaths

After the Amtrak we were on hit two people last month, I looked into how common these “trespassing casualties” are. I was astonished to learn that in the U.S. a person or vehicle is hit by a train every three hours.

The website Operation Lifesaver, which is dedicated to rail safety education, has statistics on grade crossing collisions and casualties by state. In 2017 California topped the list with 214 casualties, 123 deaths and 91 injuries.

From a San Jose Mercury News’ article, I learned that the two hit by our train were a man and woman in their 50s, identified as transients. These fatalities are so traumatic to train engineers and crew members that the entire crew has to be replaced before the train can move on.

One good thing: Turning off the digital buzz and listening to the birds, which are in full spring throttle.

Disturbances

A loose dog chased all the seals off the beach. Noise from the bouldering operation north of the tracks, along with beach walkers, caused two additional disturbances.

Natural History Notes

Harbor seals tend to return to the same haul-out locations year after year. They haul-out at three locations in Carpinteria: (1) The area adjacent to and primarily (though not always) east of the Casitas Pier, extending east at times to the last cove before Higgins Ramp. This haulout area is also the “rookery” where pups are born. (2) The offshore rocks west of the pier. (3) The offshore reef at the State Park. Only the rookery area has the capacity for more than a couple dozen, so disturbances at the rookery area deprive most of rest. Harbor seals have been observed at these haul-outs for over a century. The city ordinance provides for beach closure to help ensure their future survival, and closes the beach at approximately 750 feet on either side of the pier or at locations determined by the city—the closure signs on the beach actually define the limits.

Stork to exhibit at SBCAST

Carpinteria artist Matthew Stork’s exhibition “In Flight,” will be part of Downtown Santa Barbara’s First Thursday art events at SBCAST, 513 Garden St., Santa Barbara, on Thursday April 4, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Stork explores the metaphor of flying through mixed media and augmented reality. “Concepts of animism and semiotics influence my mixed-media work combining drawing, painting and found objects, including discarded technology and natural-world objects,” Stork wrote.

Former Carpinterian publishes third novel

Willard Thompson’s third novel, “The Girl from the Lighthouse,” is set in the 19th century and tells the story of Emma Dobbins who was raised by her father, a lighthouse keeper at Point Conception.

Dobbins discovers her artistic talent and travels to Paris with a chaperone at the age of 17. She ends up alone during the start of the Belle Èpoque, and France soon is involved in the Franco/Prussian War and the Commune Uprising. Dobbins struggles to realize her dream of becoming an artist in the novel, which is told in the first person and takes place from the 1870s until 1912, just before the start of WWI. Thompson has won numerous awards for his writing and is also a lecturer and historian. His previous novels are “Dream Helper” and “Delfina’s Gold.” Thompson now lives in Montecito.

Arts Center to hold poetry contest

In celebration of National Poetry Month, the Carpinteria Arts Center is holding the Luschei Family Poetry Awards, established by former poet laureate of San Luis Obispo County Glenna Luschei Berry-Horton. Poets must either reside in Carpinteria or submit poems inspired by Carpinteria. Entries are due April 12, submissions are free and contest guidelines are available at carpinteriaartscenter.org. ALENA STEEN This winter’s glorious rainfall is a poignant reminder of the life-giving potential of water after several years of lower-thanaverage rainfall and emergency drought declarations. Water pouring off the front ranges cascades into waterfalls that haven’t been seen in years, and the mountains behind town are bursting with wildflowers. The second year’s growth in the burn zones, fed by abundant rainfall, is lush with annual, fire-following species such as phacelia, primrose, bluebells and wild cucumber buzzing with native pollinators like solitary bumble bees recently emerged from winter’s underground hibernation.

We begin to see the process of plant succession (change) that follows fire as well: shrubs such as ceanothus, sumac and elderberry—blackened stumps last spring—now sport several feet of new growth which will ultimately overtake and shade out sun-loving wildflowers.

The delicate balance of sun and shade shifts daily on the mountainsides, following historic patterns first created by the Chumash via controlled burns.

The Chumash understood and wielded the invigorating powers of fire and the years of transition that followed to assure abundant supplies of food, medicine and cultural materials.

If you walk along trails near water at this time of year, step carefully: California newts awakened by the heavy rains are flocking to aquatic breeding sites. The newts’ chunky bodies move clumsily on land,

Listen also for the calls of frogs as they begin to breed, especially if you walk trails near day’s end. Frogs and toads are particularly threatened by drought, so this winter is a joyous occasion for them.

Resident and migratory birds are abundant and active in the lengthening days, broadcasting for mates from the tops of trees, shrubs and telephone poles. Last week’s vernal equinox, the moment when day and night are in perfect balance before the lengthening of days into summer, is a cue for many birds to begin building nests and raising young. Look for telltale signs such as birds winging through the air with sticks and twigs and parent birds kicking up a fuss when flocks of curious crows are nearby. Once a year Carpinteria flower farmers open their doors to show the world the gorgeous and nuanced business that has been integral to the valley’s agricultural landscape for decades. The Santa Barbara County Flower & Nursery Growers’ Association hosted the 11th Annual Carpinteria Greenhouse & Nursery Tour on Saturday, March 30. California produces approximately 75 percent of the nation’s blooms and “Carpinteria has become widely known as the ‘Flower Basket’ of the United States,” the organizers said in a release.

Flower growers showed off their unique sustainable growing and harvesting practices in free and farmer-guided tours at MOBI’s, Gallup & Stribling Orchids, Pianta Bella Nursery and Seaside Gardens. Greenhouses delighted attendees with the abundant blooms of gerberas, orchids and succulents. “We’re pleased to partner with our sponsors to give the community a chance to learn more about our wonderful community of flower farmers,” said June Van Wingerden, president of the Santa Barbara Flower & Nursery Growers’ Association. “This event is important because it provides an annual opportunity to invite the public to our farms to see the beauty we’re growing. We have so many beautiful plants and flowers growing inside Carpinteria’s greenhouses, the tours allow us to share that beauty and highlight how our flower farms help the local economy and provide many types of jobs.”

Warriors hang on for win against familiar Channel League foe

Pitcher Chase Mayer struck out 11 batters against Cabrillo High School.

With each team playing in new leagues this season, the Cabrillo and Carpinteria high school baseball teams squared off for their annual matchup at the Warriors’ John Calderwood Field last Saturday afternoon, March 30. New Citrus Coast League representative, Carpinteria, tallied three runs in the first inning and made those stand in a 3-2 win over new Channel League entrant, the Conquistadores. With the victory, the Warriors improved to 8-4 on the year, and Cabrillo dropped to 3-11.

After shutting down the visitors from Lompoc in the top of the first, Carpinteria lefty hurler Chase Mayer doubled over the head of right fielder Steven Moreno. Then, Noah Nuño bunted for a hit and Conq’s starter Luke Kovach walked Myles Souza to load the bases. Jacob Macias was hit by the pitch to bring home the first run to put the home team at 1-0. The next batter Tyler Cervantes lined a single to drive in Nuño, and Souza came home on a wild pitch to make it 3-0 after one.

Meanwhile, Mayer was comfortably mowing down the Cabrillo hitters during the first three innings, giving up no runs on one hit with four strikeouts to maintain the three-run lead. “You don’t always get to face a lefty, and he’s a good lefty,” said Warriors coach Pat Cooney. “So, he’s throwing a good tailing fastball and a nice curveball in there, and he’ll throw a change and knuckleball once in a while, too,” added Cooney.

But Kovach continued to battle, stranding eight Carpinteria runners through four innings to keep his team in the game.

“There was a chance in the first and in the second to add on (to the lead), and we didn’t. So, that was the frustrating part,” explained Cooney. In the meantime, the Conquistadores were able to scratch one across on a wild pitch in the fourth to make it a 3-1 game.

Cabrillo added another run in the fifth to make it 3-2. The team nearly scored in the sixth with two runners aboard.

However, catcher Diego Hernandez threw out relief pitcher Patrick Garcia trying to steal third and Mayer struck out Mason Townes. Mayer then got Ethan Malta to pop up, getting the team out of the jam.

at it in the final inning. With runners on first and second, Mayer was able to strikeout pinch hitter Michael Greene to preserve the non-league win.

At games’ end, Mayer had given up one earned run and three hits, while striking out 11 batters. On offense, Mayer and Souza led the way with two hits apiece. The Warriors return to league play, hosting Malibu on April 5 with the first pitch at 3:30 p.m.

For the Cabrillo’s baseball program, it is the end of an era. After 25 seasons at the helm, coach Jon Osborne will retire at the end of the season. “Saying farewell to Ozzie is bittersweet to say the least, we have really gotten to know each other and our families in the baseball context,” said Cooney of the rivalry that started back in ’96. “My kids wear Cabrillo baseball t-shirts around the house,” said Cooney, adding that after the game, the host team traditionally feeds the visitors as a display of good will.

Historic track meet offers something for everyone Each year, hundreds of athletes from all over the state compete in the Russell Cup Track & Field Meet at Carpinteria High School. This year’s 100th anniversary event on Saturday, April 13, will include more than the usual running, jumping and throwing. Special activities planned for the historic meet include opening ceremonies, throwback races, a tent with Russell Cup memorabilia, souvenirs for sale and a barbecue after the meet in the gymnasium.

“We are looking forward to outstanding day of competition, reminiscing and celebration,” said Meet Director Van Latham.

Tickets are on sale now for the barbecue that will follow the competition at 6 p.m. in the gymnasium. The menu will include tri-tip, chicken, beans, salad and garlic bread, and the cost is $20 per person, $30 per couple, and $10 for children. Cate School senior Rivers Sheehan was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year at this week’s Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table luncheon. Boys tennis

March 14 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team beat Hueneme in a Citrus Coast League match, 13-5. In singles, Cameron Gralewski, Corban Pampel and Austin Stone each went 2-0 before being subbed out. “Each seemed to win fairly comfortably as all three played sound tennis. But I was also very impressed with Zaidan Juarez and Ian Thomas who came in as subs but played really well and have made huge strides this season,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. In doubles, Luke Nahooikaika/Carlos Costilla went 2-0 before being subbed out, and Kirby Zapata/Solomon Nahooikaika went 2-1. “We started fast today and built a big lead which allowed us to get all of our players in, which is always a good thing,” added Bryant. Carpinteria is now 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

March 21 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team traveled down to Pepperdine to play Malibu in the Citrus Coast League, winning 12-6. In doubles, Kirby Zapata/Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson swept and dropped one game. Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson/Cameron Gralewski went 2-0 together. Isaac Benitez/Ben Persoon won their only set, 6-2. In singles, Austin Stone went 3-0, dropping four games on the day. “They are a very fun and athletic team to watch, and I was really impressed with Carlos Costilla as he made a great comeback against the Sharks Number-one player before losing in a tiebreak,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. “Esteban Zapata also looked sharp in singles, he did a great job of moving the ball around the court and keeping his opponent on the run,” added Bryant.

March 22 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team, Number-11 in Division Three lost to San Juan Hills, Number-10 in Division three in a non-league match, 9-9 (70-66). In doubles, Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson/Kirby Zapata went 3-0 and Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson/Cameron Gralewski went 2-1. In singles, Austin Stone also went 2-1 and played against the Stallions’ Number-two player. “… I was really proud, and worried about Myles Morgan who moved to singles after a few weeks off, and then playing some doubles while he slowly came back from a knee injury,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. “Overall, we played very soundly, and I was happy to see us play such a solid team, with good depth, so tough,” added Bryant. Carpinteria is now 11-2 overall and still 6-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

April 1 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team defeated the Thacher Toads in a non-league match, 10-8. “I was really hoping we would have pulled away, but I give them credit as they just would not go away,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Austin Stone went 3-0 and Myles Morgan went 2-1. In doubles, Kirby Zapata/Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson and Carlos Costilla/Luke NahooikaikaAnderson each went 2-1 with wins against the Toads Number-two team; but both dropped sets to the Toads Number-one team. Ian McCurry/Cameron Gralewski went 1-2. Carpinteria is now 14-2 overall and still 6-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

Baseball

March 27 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team dropped a 2-1 decision at Santa Ynez. Right handers Miles Souza for the Warriors and Jackson Cloud for the Pirates toed the rubber for their respective teams and kept the offenses at bay. Carpinteria fell behind in the first inning to the Pirates 1-0, but the Warriors evened the score at 1-1 in the fifth when Chase Mayer’s sacrifice fly drove in Luke Lounsbury.

The Pirates answered as Dante Berouty knocked in Mason Young from second base with two outs. The Warriors are 7-4 on the year; while, Santa Ynez improves to 9-6-1.

Swimming

March 29 – The Carpinteria High School swim team raced against the Nordhoff Rangers on the last day of spring break with the girls falling 113 to 52, and the boys also finishing second by a score of 75-67. In the 200 Individual Medley, junior Sydney Endow swam past all her competitors and qualified for CIF consideration. Sophomore Beau Persoon won both the 200 and 50-meter freestyle events. “The Warriors swam hard, but were unable to stay ahead of the Rangers,” said Carpinteria coach Sergio Castaneda. “The team continues to steadily improve,” added Castaneda.

Boys golf

April 2 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team beat Villanova Prep, 247271, in a nine-hole, non-league dual match Tuesday at Soule Park. Jose Gonzalez tied two Wildcats (Keanu Ramirez and Conner Quest) for first place with a 47.

Jacob Mata and Tristan Kelly shot 49 each. Villanova had to take a double par for each hole as they were short one player.

Girls lacrosse

March 26 – The Cate School girls lacrosse played their first Channel League game against San Marcos, coming away with a 12-10 win. Piper Brooks started the scoring off with a goal in the first minute of play and another 10 minutes later. Maddie Erikson contributed two more goals in the half; and birthday girl, Hannah Biles, added a goal and assist. “Piper Brooks, Mia Foster and Lilly Rhiel stood out all game for their tenacity and lacrosse IQ,” said Rams coach Renee Mack. Erikson had six goals for the game and Brooks contributed four goals and two assists. Meanwhile on defense, Liza Borghesani had six saves.

March 28 – The Cate School girls lacrosse team beat Thacher, 13-6. “The midfield draw control was led by Maddie Erickson winning five draws,” said Rams coach Renee Mack whose team won 15 of the 20 draws. “Captains Maddie Erikson and Daphne McKeefry played their best today, led the team by example,” added Mack of the duo that combined for nine goals and two assists. “Josie Erikson and Lily

March 26 – The Cate School boys tennis team improved to 3-0 in Channel League play with a 16-2 win over Santa Clara. The Rams got sweeps at Numberone singles, courtesy of junior Ethan Ha, Number-two singles from senior Charles Xie, and in all the doubles sets where the Number-one doubles team of senior Brad Gordon/junior Devin Pai and the Number-two doubles duo of junior Parker May/freshman Jinming Wang also prevailed. Sophomore Michael Armstrong picked up one set in singles.

March 27 – The Cate School boys tennis team improved to 4-0 in Tri-Valley League play with a 17-1 win at Foothill Tech. After sweeping the first round, Number-one singles Ethan Ha subbed out for sophomore Michael Armstrong.

Armstrong, along with Number-two singles senior Charles Xie and Numberthree singles junior Parker May finished the day without dropping a singles’ set.

Doubles nearly had a perfect result, winning eight of nine sets behind the play of Number-one Brad Gordon/Devin Pai, Number-two Lucian Prinz/Phil Xu and Number-three Bryce Kim/Stefan Shu. Shu/Kim lost a set to the Dragons Numberone doubles team.

March 29 – The Cate School boys tennis team improved to 6-4 (4-0 in Tri-Valley League play) with a 17-1 non-league win over the visiting Santa Ynez Pirates. The Rams swept all nine doubles sets and took eight of nine singles sets. The starting lineup in singles was at Number-one, junior Ethan Ha, at Number-two senior Charles Xie, and at Number-three junior Parker May. At doubles was Number-one senior Brad Gordon/junior Devin Pai, at Number-two sophomore Lucian Prinz/junior Phil Xu and at Number-three sophomore Bryce Kim/senior Stefan Shu. May lost his first set 7-5 and then picked up two wins.

Gordon/Pai won their first set and then subbed out for sophomore Michael Armstrong/ freshman Jinming Wang, who won the next two rounds, 6-0, 6-0.

Baseball

March 29 – The Cate School baseball team moved to 3-0 in the Frontier League after picking up an 11-7 win over Villanova Prep in Ojai. Junior Dalton Phillips got the start for the Rams and went two innings, striking out two, while giving up three runs. Senior Ethan Cassulo made his pitching debut this season, going two innings in relief while surrendering two runs and striking out four. Sophomore Daniel Panadero delivered three innings of relief to close the game out, giving up two runs and striking out five. On offense, senior Jack Deardorff went two for three with a double and a two-run homer. Sophomore William Deardorff was two for three with two doubles.

Phillips was three for four for Cate, including a triple. Junior Scott Holmes finished the day going two for three, as did his younger brother, freshman Matty Holmes.

Panadero was one for four. Senior Cal Sinclair and McCarthy Willett had one hit each.

April 2 – The Cate School baseball team traveled to Ojai on Tuesday to take on the Thacher Toads in a rivalry showdown, walking away with a 16-0 win in a game called after five innings. The win pushes Cate to 4-2-1 overall and 4-0 in league play. Senior right hander Jack Deardorff went all five for Cate, striking out eight and giving up four hits for the shutout win. “He was helped by some great defensive performances from Scott Holmes, Class of ’20, at third base and Matty Holmes, Class of ‘22, behind the plate,” said Rams assistant Dave Soto. The Rams were led by freshman Charlie Schofield, who went 2-3. Sophomore William Deardorff, junior Dalton Phillips and senior McCathey Willett were all one for three at the plate. While senior Cal Sinclair was one for two.

Boys volleyball

March 29 – The Cate School boys volleyball team beat Bishop Diego in three sets: 25-12, 25-20 and 25-22. “The team started out strong with everyone participating in set one behind the strong serving and hitting by Theo Mack class of ‘20,” reported Rams coach K.C. Collins. In set two, Cate had to make an adjustment due to an injury mid set. “Mack and libero Albert Barber stepped in to set out of system on the fly,” explained Collins. The duo also split the role again in set three, with Jojo Broussard making a switch to the outside, and Jackson Weinberger coming in to play the right side. “Middles Ethan Ng and Sean Busse worked hard to put pressure with the block,” said Collins. Senior Cullen Barber from the outside knocked down 13 kills and racked up 10 digs.

April 2 – The Cate School boys volleyball team battled to a three-set win over Providence, 25-17, 25-21 and 25-12. Sophomore Albert Barber, after a couple weeks back from injury, stepped into his new role of setter for the night. In set three, Cate’s setting was split between Barber and junior Theo Mack. “Mack dished out some nice, quick sets to our middles, giving juniors Ethan Ng and Sean Busse opportunities to earn kills out of the middle,” said Rams coach K.C. Collins. “Jackson Weinberger, Class of ‘20, sparked the defensive play of the day, diving to pancake the ball up. Cullen Barber tripped and flew over him to get the ball up, which boomeranged off our middle for the kill,” explained Collins. Sophomore Ryan Suh at the libero position for the evening, racked up seven digs and two service aces.

Working with the city of Carpinteria, the Carpinteria Beautiful organization held a city-wide cleanup on Saturday, March 30.

Volunteers got work-area assignments, gloves, trash pickers and bags from Carpinteria Beautiful staff who set up in the Amtrak parking lot. The beautiful weather provided ideal conditions for the city-wide spring cleaning.

“Call Me by My True Names”

Warren Duffy, is a failed comic-book artist suffering from the triple whammy of a fresh divorce from his Welsh wife, losing his comic-book store and his father’s death. Returning to his family’s home in urban Philadelphia, Warren finds his old neighborhood has long gone to seed. As the light-skinned son of a black mother and an Irish father who long ago fled his racially charged hometown, he’s very conflicted. Warren discovers that he has a daughter, Tal, from a high school hook-up with a local Jewish girl who’s long since dead. The reluctant father warily takes in his daughter and finds a school which devotes itself exclusively to supporting multiracial students. There, he discovers that others see him as a “sunflower”: “yellow on the outside, brown on the inside.

A slang term for a biracial person who denies their mixed nature, only recognizing their black identity.”

Warren is complicated and articulate, quarrelsome with his neighbors, yearns for one of Tal’s teachers, and walks the perpetual tightrope he believes stretches between the black and white worlds.

The author is clearly interested in what it means to be biracial in America and whether it’s better to identify publicly as white, black or biracial.

The absurd and comic final conflagration occurs, of course, on “Loving Day,” the little-known celebration of the day the Supreme Court struck down all laws criminalizing interracial marriage.

“Call Me by My True Names” is an intricate collection of poems by the peace activist and Zen Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh. The author lived most of his life in exile from his native Vietnam. He taught in the U.S. and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King Jr. Later, Nhat Hanh established a monastery in France and took his message of peace to the world outside his home country. After decades abroad and a debilitating stroke, in his 90s, he returned to Vietnam where he now lives.

“Call Me by My True Names” is wonderful in how it communicates a way of thinking and seeing connections. Nhat Hanh’s poems are paths of meditation that show us how to feel the depth of what can be bound in a single moment.

“My joy is like spring, so warm / it makes flowers bloom all over the Earth. / My pain is like a river of tears, / so vast it fills four oceans. / Please call me by my true names, / so I can hear all my cries and laughter at once, / so I can see that my joy and pain are one.”

“Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Who Helped Win World War II” by Liza Mundy is the true story of women from small towns and elite colleges who were recruited by the U.S. Army and Navy. While their brothers and boyfriends took up arms, more than 10,000 women moved to Washington where they learned the meticulous work of code breaking. They became an important part of the war effort and gained access to careers previously unavailable to them.

Lions honor Sheriff’s Lieutenant, induct new members

The Carpinteria Lions Club Lions recently honored Lt. Brian Thielst from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department. Thielst was appointed the Lieutenant and Chief of Police Services for Carpinteria in 2017 and has served in the department since 1986.

Serving in the Gang Enforcement Team, Thielst has also been a supervisor in north and south county, worked in the Criminal Investigations Division, and been a member of the SWAT Team. Additionally, the pride is growing. Lions Club District Governor Juanita Nichols recently inducted new Lions David Hayman and Kevin Mauseth.
