Motorcyclist fatally injured in Carpinteria traffic collision

At approximately 6 a.m. on March 15, a motorcyclist was killed in a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 150 and Via Real in Carpinteria.

The motorcyclist, identified as 43-year-old Richard Cramer of Ojai, was riding a blue BMW R1200RS heading westbound on Highway 150, when he entered the intersection at the same time as a Ford pickup truck heading eastbound on Highway 150 turned onto Via Real, resulting in a collision. Paramedics performed life-saving measures on Cramer, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Ford pickup truck, a 47-year-old male resident of Oxnard, was not injured in the collision and remained at the scene to cooperate with the investigating deputies.

The Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Major Accident Response Team is investigating this collision to determine its cause and whether alcohol and/or drugs were a factor.

Sunrise gathering on the Bluffs observes spiritual history

Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs is holding its 21st annual Sunrise Ceremony on Sunday, March 24, at 7 a.m. at the Mishopshno Meadow of the Carpinteria Bluffs. In partnership with Chumash descendant Julie Tumamait-Stenslie, the Citizens group has been holding the annual spring spiritual observance since 1999. Along with other members of the Chumash community, Tumamait-Stenslie will lead the public in a spiritual observance. Tumamait-Stenslie encourages participants to bring a poem, story, or song to share in the language of their ancestors.

“It is a time to see and appreciate the beauty of renewal. With all the devastation and loss from the fires and floods, we are given a chance to restore, renew and rebuild,” said Tumamait-Stenslie. “We gather at the Carpinteria Bluffs as a community, as a powerful and loving force to offer up our gratitude for the beauty of Mother Earth and all the beauty that surrounds us…To bring harmony and balance to a chaotic world...”

In partnership with the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County, the Citizens group spearheaded the successful $3.95 million public acquisition of the Carpinteria Bluffs 20 years ago, in the fall of 1998, to ensure that the Bluffs remained protected as natural open space.

The Mishopshno Meadow is the open space area just north of the Anne and Al Drasdo Memorial Grove of eucalyptus trees at the Carpinteria Bluffs, southwest of the main entrance of the Nature Preserve. Access to the Bluffs is at the Bailard Avenue exit of US 101. Parking is available at the entrance to the Preserve at the end of Bailard towards the ocean as well as in the larger parking area to the east, at the edge of the Viola Playing Fields. CUSD school board talks CHS accreditation, budget cuts

The March 12 meeting of the Carpinteria Unified School District Board featured discussion of Carpinteria High School’s (CHS) successful accreditation campaign as well as opposition from instructional aides and teachers to proposed future budget cuts. CHS Principal Gerardo Cornejo described in detail his school’s areas of strength, room for growth and plans for the future. Instructional aides and their supporters, meanwhile, dominated the public comments section of the meeting, urging board members to fully fund their positions.

The meeting began with the recognition of several area educators and staff, including CHS World Languages Department Chair Kate Guede, for her work as an advisor to the California Scholastic Federation. Superintendent Diana Rigby described Guede as “a reminder of why we all went into education in the first place.” Aliso Elementary School first grade teachers Rene Mireles and Erica Lee were also recognized for their innovative literacy programs. Rigby commended Santa Barbara County teacher of the year Mandi de Witte for her keynote speech on empowering female students in the sciences and celebrated the Measure U team’s work modernizing classrooms at Canalino Elementary School and CHS, construction that is expected to begin this summer. The superintendent lamented the 11 percent decline in district enrollment over the last decade. Board member Maureen Foley Claffey, calculating an average drop of 39 students per year, said “by any metric, that’s alarming.” Echoing Claffey’s concern, board member Rogelio Delgado said, “it’s alarming, everything looks down, down, down.”

The board then heard a report on the successful CHS accreditation campaign, delivered by 13-year veteran principal Cornejo and CHS Arts Department Chair Sarah Rochlitzer. Rochlitzer began the presentation by describing faculty and staff strategies for focusing on areas of strength and possibilities for growth.

“Part of working at CHS is wearing a lot of hats,” she said, thanking faculty for sitting on multiple committees and putting together individualized department action plans. CHS and the accrediting committee agreed on major strengths, from the wide variety of AP and A-G courses offered, to the supportive, safe, small school atmosphere. Areas for growth included extending technology options to students and establishing more rigorous, data-driven assessment options, and expanding faculty support for non-

Cornejo emphasized the accrediting committee’s respect for CHS’ high sports participation rate. Noting that nearly 70 percent of the student body participates in athletics, Cornejo connected the with the excellent parent-teacher relations built over the course of the school year, particularly through parent-teacher conferences and regular communication via Parent Square, the district’s communications platform.

Board Chair Andy Sheaffer asked Cornejo about the impacts of increased technology use on a generation of students already taken up with social media.

Expressing a widely shared concern, Sheaffer discussed the potentially addictive qualities of the notification feedback loop, and asked Cornejo and Rochlitzer how faculty would manage the burdens as well as opportunities offered by a techheavy curriculum. Rochlitzer described her own strict no cell phone in the classroom policy, arguing that as a teacher “the onus is on us to create responsible expectations,” and stressing that in the Arts Department faculty strive to “create a space where it’s just about being present with what you’re doing.” In agreement, Cornejo stressed the significance of faceto-face communication and urged all district staff to model good cell phone behavior.

Laura Manriquez, a 19-year instructional assistant currently working at CHS and Aliso, said, “there can be no doubt” instructional aides contribute to student-learning outcomes, encourage critical thinking skills and create an atmosphere of trust and safety for district students. Canalino kindergarten teacher Angela White urged the board “to come and spend a day with us” to witness the impact of full-day instructional assistants on students. Saying “we are beyond grateful for the fantastic” assistants at her school, White asked why high-level district administrators such as the superintendent will have assistants, but teachers won’t. “Why cut people who work directly with kids?” asked

White, who also argued that teachers had agreed to the 1.5-hour extension of the kindergarten day only in the belief that full-day instructional support would continue as well.

Jay Hotchner, a Carpinteria Middle School teacher and president of local union CAUSE (Carpinteria Association of United School Employees), concluded the meeting by reiterating that teachers were “adamant that an extended day requires six-hour instructional assistants,” arguing that Superintendent Rigby had made a commitment and must follow through.

The board is expected to continue budget discussions at the next meeting on Tuesday, April 9.

City works to ensure Carpinteria beaches remain vibrant amidst rising sea levels Environmental consultants recommend city act sooner rather than later

Harry Herrick at the March 18 meeting of the city of Carpinteria’s General Plan/Coastal Plan Update Committee, consultants to the city, Wood environment & Infrastructure solutions, updated the public about the physical development of land and land use policies required by the Coastal Commission.

Most of the meeting was spent discussing the Final sea level Rise vulnerability assessment and adaptation Plan (slR), which was developed concurrently with the Draft Introduction to the Coastal land Use/General Plan (ClUP/GP) and intended to support forthcoming policies. several areas of the draft slR were updated to incorporate the results of a recent study by the ocean Protection Council (oPC), which affected previous sea-level rise projections. Based on the oPC study, the sea-level rise projection for 2100 increased from 5 feet to 6.5 feet, and there now is a possibility of five feet of sea level rise as early as 2070. the final SLR Plan also incorporated projections based on high-end climate change scenarios (H++) from the oPC study. according to Julia Pujo of Wood environment & Infrastructure solutions, “there’s enough certainty to say that sea level rise will occur and that we should plan for it.” the slR was also updated with the results of a social vulnerabilities analysis study, which found certain segments of the population with a higher risk of impact from sea level rise than previously reported. according to Pujo, the study found “a larger proportion of minority and non-english speaking residents in the beach area and downtown … and with five feet of sea level rise, those populations would be affected.” the study also found that the transit-dependent population, which generally includes elderly, youth and lower income residents, may

Although doctors and vets are required to report dog attacks to law-enforcement, I doubt it’s consistently done. I’ve found no reliable data on dog attacks in Carpinteria.

Dog park, no thanks

Forget the off-leash dog park, Carpinteria needs an on-leash dog park. How would an off-leash dog park be different from the rest of Carpinteria? Carpinteria is a de-facto leash-less city due to lax enforcement and widespread entitlement transference. Entitlement transference is a personal sense of entitlement transferred to a dog. It is exemplified by the Friedmans’ letter published in this paper (“Dogs are community members too,” Carolyn and Neil Friedman, Vol. 25, No. 26). Apparently, some folks think rules don’t apply to their dog because they pay taxes, have a brother, a job or whatever. The way these folks feel about their dog being off-leash is the same way Lori Loughlin feels about her kids attending USC. Never mind the rules, they don’t apply to them. I can’t fight that irrational mindset, so I pay $125 per year for a dog membership at the Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens to safely walk my dog where leash rules are enforced. There’s nowhere safe in Carpinteria. From Linden Avenue to the Franklin Trail, loose dogs are everywhere.

The painful consequences are wellhidden. Although doctors and vets are required to report dog attacks to lawenforcement, I doubt it’s consistently done. I’ve found no reliable data on dog attacks in Carpinteria. I anecdotally know my dog is one of many that survived one.

I know I’d pay far more than $125 per year to safely walk my dog at home in Capinteria. The city should give us one reliably enforced on-leash location and name its price. We have no choice but to go to SB. If, however, an off-leash park is ever created, I hope its fees will be high enough to fund leash-law enforcement everywhere else.

Cheers to Carp cannabis growers

California voters legalized cannabis in 2016, but localities around the state have continued to say, “but not here.” Tax dollars to the state are way below predicted levels and a majority of users still get their product on the black market. That’s because even though voters wanted legal cannabis, cities and counties keep saying, “but not here.” Even if people want to

get legal cannabis, it’s harder to find and more expensive than the illegal stuff.

I say great for Carpinteria farmers for being pioneers and growing the new crop. Fear-based arguments about crime are unfounded, and anyone saying Carpinteria has changed due to cannabis is fixated on “devil’s weed” propaganda from the past.

Everyone I know who is pro-cannabis is cool as a cucumber. That’s an attitude that fits in with the Carpinteria I love.

Don’t be an “intexticated” driver

Sadly, teenage crashes increase this time of year. Many drivers now have their eyes glued to their phone on their lap or side of the steering wheel. Is this a “social norm”? This illegal trend must end.

Drivers are aware of the danger drunk driving poses. A drunken driver hit me when I was 16 in 1992, and I was seriously injured. Surgery and therapy became my teenage life. My gait, hearing and speech are damaged.

Sending a text when driving reduces your abilities down to those of a drunken driver. Drunken drivers weave lanes, speed through red lights, and do not signal when turning just like a driver using a cell phone would do.

Using a phone when driving can result in a ticket or crash. Even if it’s not fatal, it will haunt your future driving.

When driving, ditch the phone! Have people leave messages and call when parked.

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Don’t drink and drive and “X the Txt.”

Getting into college–– How much is the parent’s responsibility?

Two students I a know of learned moNthly English, became gifted students in muse junior high and high meliNda wittwer school and earned A few years ago, when I applied to full scholarships... colleges, it never entered my head that a school wouldn’t accept me. My high It makes me cringe school in Lindsay, deep in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley, only had about a to think that their hundred seniors, out of which less than 10 ended up in four-year schools. Most of acceptance into my graduating class went to the local junior college or went to work. So, I thought college could have I was headed to the big time when I been negated applied to the University of California at Santa Barbara where the climate was by some wealthy certainly much better than in the Valley.

(I really wanted to go to UC Berkeley, but no way was my mom going to let me go to parent’s idea of what a school where riots and protesting hapis the best way to pened daily.) Today, applying to college is a scary ordeal with intense competition help a child. to get into the “top” schools and very few students are guaranteed acceptance to their “school of choice.”

College was a great experience for me.

I earned a Cal Grant, so my fees were covered. I also won several local scholarships which covered my book costs for several years. My parents paid for room and board, and I worked to pay for my clothes and activities. In this I was lucky because I left school owing absolutely nothing.

I’ve always given my parents a lot of credit because from the time I started elementary school, I heard about “when you go to college.” My parents were not rich. They were barely middle class when I was a child, but they always gave me the expectation of getting a college degree.

And it was made clear to me that it was my job to get a good education and make the most of each and every class.

Now parents, some very wealthy parents, feel it is their responsibility to get their offspring into the best schools, the most prestigious schools, the most expensive schools, in any way possible.

If they donate enough money or pay enough in bribes, their student can take the spot of a star athlete or a scholarship recipient. Or these parents might pay some semi-genius to take their student’s SAT test. The resulting amped-up test result certainly gives their student an advantage, albeit an unfair and unearned advantage. The really obnoxious part is that a lot of these wealthy offspring could care less about getting a good education.

Their parents are rich, and therefore they are rich. Most have never had a job. Most have no great desire to do the work required to complete a degree at a premiere college. It is their parents that want the ability to say, “My son, my daughter, is attending Harvard or Princeton or USC.” Most of the students that attended the junior high at which I taught came from

Most had parents that were lucky to have completed high school or a few years at a junior college. Yet two I know of learned English, became gifted students in junior high and high school, earned full scholarships, and went to Ivy League East Coast schools. One became a doctor and returned to the Oxnard area to work in low-income medical clinics. It makes me cringe to think that their acceptance into college could have been negated by some wealthy parent’s idea of what is the best way to help a child.

It’s no surprise that wealthy parents have made large donations over the years to various colleges in hopes that their son or daughter will be looked at favorably.

But it’s appalling that there are parents that are paying what amounts to big time bribes to get their son or daughter accepted by a premier college and, in this process, have cheated deserving students out of their chances. This is wrong on so many levels and in so many ways. Maybe the students that weren’t accepted to USC or Harvard or Princeton due to these bribes, have grounds for a class action lawsuit against not only the schools that allowed this to happen but also against those parents that thought their wealth could somehow buy what should be earned.

Second bi-monthly skateboard comp comes to CMS

Twelve Carpinteria Middle School skaters competed Wednesday, March 13, for a spot among the top-five finishers in a skateboarding competition/demo run with support from school staff and the Lighthouse Skate Shop of Santa Barbara.

Judged on tricks performed in a set time, the skaters slid their boards on rails, popped “ollies” (kicking the board in the air) and launched themselves off a ramp.

Terrance Garibay won the event and was awarded a skateboard from Lighthouse Skate Shop. Second-place winner Edgar Mosqueda also received a skateboard.

Robert Morales won third place in a skate-off-tie-breaker with Mac Sharp, who took fourth. Caleb Faoro finished in fifth place.

Howard School fundraiser set for April 13 CVN REPoRT

For over a century, the Howard School, Santa Barbara’s oldest continually operating independent and nonprofit school, has been educating children from communities across Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. this year, the school will hold its annual auction and fundraiser “Springtime in Paris” on Saturday, april 13, at 3 p.m. at the Howard School on Girls Inc. of Carpinteria’s campus, 5315 Foothill road, Carpinteria. the Howard School serves children from preschool to eighth grade, with a highly individualized teaching approach that emphasizes meaningful character development as well as academic achievement.

As a nonprofit school with no endowment and a yearly tuition cost at approximately half the rate of comparable schools nearby, the Howard School fundraises each spring to ensure its operating costs, teacher salaries and scholarship funds for low- and middle-income families.

“Our annual fundraiser helps keep tuition as low as possible,” said Joel reed, headmaster of the Howard School, “allowing us to offer educational opportunities for families within our community who understand that an individualized learning environment is essential for their child’s success.” this year’s fundraiser, “Springtime in Paris,” will be fully catered by premier chefs—ricky rossignol of the Marriott, Nirasha rodriguez of the Food Liaison and rory trovato of rori’s artisanal Creamery.

Guests will have their palettes delighted by a French-infused springtime feast and an open bar brimming with a full-bodied selection of hops and spirits from local craft brewers, wine makers and mixologists.

Bluffs sunrise ceremony

Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs will hold its 21st annual Sunrise Ceremony on Sunday, March 24, at 7 a.m. sun. at the Mishopshno Meadow of the Carpinteria Bluffs.

Participants should plan to arrive at the meadow by 6:45 a.m. Chumash descendant Julie Tumamait-Stenslie will lead the ceremony and invites other members of the Chumash community as well as members of the general public to join her and the Citizens group. Participants are encouraged to bring a poem, story or song to share in the language of their ancestors. Access to the Bluffs is at the Bailard Avenue exit of US 101. Library writers’ group helps its members stay sharp

Each Tuesday for the last 10 years the Carpinteria Writers’ Group has met in the common room of the library, taken their seats around a large platform of tables and shared their work. The format is fairly straightforward: participants read a few pages aloud to their fellow writers, then receive feedback. But the results are significant. First, there is the basic requirement of putting words on the page and showing up to the workshop, which, for desk-bound writers (never mind those in the grips of writer’s block), can be a challenge. More importantly however, the process of reading one’s work aloud and getting responses from other writers gives new perspectives and illuminates blind spots.

Covering a diversity of topics from an A to Z of Bible commentary by Phoenix Hocking, to a fictionalized remembrance of a Polish grandmother who survived the holocaust by her wits and tenacity by Michael Fryd, to a murder mystery series set in a church in Seattle by Kathie Deviny, the Carpinteria Writers’ Group is comprised of members with a focused and sustained writing practice. The work is done in isolation, but commentary from fellow writers keeps the group’s members sharp.

they face: whether it be not finding an artist to illustrate a graphic novel and therefore beginning the process of painting and drawing the material oneself, as Sue Perry is doing for her science fiction detective story, or working to finish a third installment of a murder mystery series like Deviny. Deviny shared a story that perhaps best illustrates the power of writing: A fellow parishioner in Seattle, from the church where Deviny’s series is set, so loved the first two books that she intends to read them again even though a diagnosis has left her only three months to live. Deviny plans to get the manuscript of the third book to the woman as soon as possible.

Using the technique of creative nonfiction, Julia Offen is writing an ethnography that is informed by her time as a circus worker in Europe. Mike Winneguth shared a revised excerpt from his thriller set in Los Angeles and said to the group, “With everyone’s help last week I rewrote the ending,” which promises to keep readers enthralled.

The Carpinteria Writers’ Group started as an adult education creative writing class in 2009, and became a writing group when members wanted to continue meeting when the class ended. A library-sponsored group, the CWG uses the common room at no-charge and holds several events in the evenings there as well. Community leaders joined Girls Inc. of Carpinteria’s Board of Directors, staff and girls on Thursday, March 14, to celebrate the completed installation of the new 30-kilowatt solar electric system. Girls Inc. of Carpinteria’s new photovoltaic solar electric system is expected to provide approximately half of the organization’s electricity for the next 25 years.

The system was installed as part of Community Environment Council’s Solarize Nonprofit pilot project, a program designed to help local nonprofits go solar and run off renewable energy without upfront costs. The program grew out of CEC’s residential Solarize program, which has helped 735 homeowners go solar. The installation at Girls Inc. was completed in partnership between CEC, Asteri Solar, who provided the funding for the project, and local solar installer Sun Pacific Solar Electric, Inc. Girls Inc. is the second nonprofit to complete installation through the program, following the Santa Barbara Bicycle Coalition.

The organization is projected to save over $300,000 on their future electricity bills by using solar power through the Solarize Nonprofit program. “The solar installation project is part of our Board of Directors’ long-range planning and broad visioning for the future of the Carpinteria campus, and an example of the collaborations we want to foster with other community partners,” said Lisa Murphy Rivas, interim executive director at Girls Inc. of Carpinteria.

“The organization will greatly benefit from significant savings in our operating expenses and the ability to utilize clean, renewable energy.

“The Girls Inc. of Carpinteria girls on campus today will remember being with the organization the year we started taking steps for the future of our campus and the environment!” Rivas added.

The solar project is part of Girls Inc.’s campus-wide effort to reduce energydemand and upgrade the facility, including new energy-efficient lighting that was also recently installed.

“We are delighted to support Girls Inc. of Carpinteria and their important mission,” said Matt Riley of Asteri Solar.

“They have been an amazing partner on this project, and we look forward to reducing their operating costs with solar power.”

Asteri Solar launched in 2018 to support the community through impact investing in solar for nonprofit organizations.

The ribbon cutting ceremony included representatives from CEC, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria, Sun Pacific, Carpinteria Mayor Wade Nomura, and representa-

tives from the offices of Senator HannahBeth Jackson, Assemblymember Monique Limón, Congressman Salud Carbajal and Supervisor Das Williams.

“Carpinteria has always been at the forefront of sustainability efforts and the newly completed solar system at Girls Inc. of Carpinteria is a great example,” said Nomura. Kadie McShirley of Supervisor Das Williams’ office applauded the organization, “We are proud to honor Girls Inc. of Carpinteria for doing their part to reduce greenhouse gases and create a sustainable future for us all.”

While Solarize Nonprofit has already identified several nonprofits for funding through the pilot, there may be additional capacity for the program. Eligible nonprofits must own their buildings or be in long-term leases and have facilities suitable for solar. Nonprofits may apply at SolarizeNonprofit.org.

Local author keeps the pages turning

In the story “The Old Man and the Beach,” from his new collection of self-published stories titled “Clean Shorts,” local author Gary Delanoeye draws a clear-eyed portrait of sunrise on the beach at the end of Linden Avenue: “Facing out to sea at 6:30 a.m. I am looking due south. Photography workshop comes to the Bluffs

The Land Trust for Santa Barbara County will host Andreina Diaz of EyeSee Santa Barbara for a sunset photography workshop titled “Nature Photography Made Easy,” and a tour of the Rincon Bluffs Preserve on Sunday, March 31, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Diaz will share techniques for taking successful pictures at dusk, including tips on general composition, use of flash and proper exposure. The workshop will also cover the topic of exposure adjustment and basic camera settings and smartphone/ iPhone features. All photographic skill levels are welcome. Advance registration is required, and the cost is $25 for adults and $10 for children 15-years-old or younger.

A two-mile Rincon Bluffs loop tour will provide opportunities for workshop attendees to practice photography tips for capturing high-quality seascapes of the coastline at dusk. The 2019 Channel Islands Surfboards Rincon Classic is on

For 19 years, Chris Keet, the owner of Surf Happens surf school, has run the Rincon Classic. The surf at Rincon, known as “The Queen of the Coast,” can be a bit fickle, since the point requires a swell from a westerly direction with a certain interval of seconds between waves to work properly. But when it’s breaking, the waves are world-class. Still, over a four-month waiting period, the decision for which weekend to run the Classic rests on Keet’s shoulders alone. Like an oracle to the local surfing community, Keet must judge local weather conditions and interpret swell models from weeks out to make the right call, which he inevitably and unerringly does each year. On Monday, March 18, Keet spoke about the 2019 Channel Islands Surfboards Rincon Classic, which he has determined will run Saturday and Sunday, March 23-24.

Christian Beamish: The forecast has turned in your favor.

Chris Keet: Things are looking up. It’s been a pretty chaotic jet stream all winter, starting in the middle of January. This forecast was looking really good two weeks ago, and then, as of five or six days ago, it was downgraded substantially. Then on Saturday night I got a text from a friend that said, “The Brownie swell is coming.”

Beamish: This year, the contest is dedicated to the memory of Chris Brown?

Keet: Definitely. Every year it seems the community is coming together for a reason. Last year, it was a celebration of healing (after the Thomas Fire and Jan. 9 debris flow), and this year it’s the same thing but a different kind of healing. We lost someone very near and dear to us, Chris Brown. The very first surf contest he ever did was the Rincon Classic was back in 1982 when he was 11-year-old, and the last surf contest that he did was in 2017 at the Rincon Classic. He was such a light in our community, and that light lives on in all of us, and when we all come together—there’s going to be countless stories and memories re-lived, and comradery and everyone’s going to be smiling like Brownie, and sharing in the sport that he loved and the community he loved, at the wave that he loved.

Beamish: Are there new elements to the Rincon Classic this year?

Keet: We’re going to be doing live interviews with people as they win their heats.

We have a live webcast this year, that’s conducted with the STACT App scoring system as well.

Beamish: Can you explain the STACT App scoring system?

Keet: It allows people to see the scores on their phones as the contest is going on. It’s worked out through USA Surfing/usasurfing.org. We work with them for the scaffolding (for the competition site), and we were working with them for the computer scoring system in the past, but they brought in STACT App scoring as well.

Beamish: How does the format work?

Keet: This year we’ve added five minutes to each heat, so instead of 15-minute heats, it’s 20-minute heats, (a surfer’s) top-two waves are counted towards advancement out of a (10-wave maximum a surfer can catch). There are divisions from the Gremlins 12-and-under, all the way up to the Legends 56 plus. There

Beamish: Who do you have on tap for the pros this year?

Keet: There are all the resident pros that can make it. We have Conner and Parker Coffin. Just like for Brownie, this was their first contest back in the day and they both happen to be in town this weekend, so we have them confirmed. We have a couple other of the larger names in the area that were on the fence, but they’re probably going to jump off the fence and into the line-up because the surf is going to be good! And back to the swell turning in our favor: you know, my friend texted me that the “Brownie” swell was coming, and then I went and looked (at the computer storm-tracking system) and they were saying decreasing swell Saturday with a little bump up Sunday—all of a sudden there was a swell Wednesday, peaking Thursday, that was straight West,

and then another swell building all day Saturday into Sunday that was even bigger. Right now, they’re saying (the swell direction) will be coming in at 290 degrees West, which is great for the Indicator (section of Rincon Point) and maybe good for the Cove. They’re calling for head-high to maybe double-overhead surf. We’ve been waiting…

Beamish: What else should people know about the event this weekend?

Keet: That it’s an all-ages, super fun, family-friendly event. There’s a ton of sand at the beach right now, so there will be lots of room for everyone to hang out.

Come out and check out the area’s best surfers. Spend the weekend with friends and family. There will be prizes and all kinds of schwag on the beach. We’re doing beach clean-ups too, to “be green to the Queen,” which was always one of Brownie’s favorite things to say. It’s going to be a great weekend. It’s going to be an excellent way for the most anticipated event of the winter to kick off, right in the first weekend of spring.

Beamish: Is the awards event happening at Padaro Beach Grill?

Keet: The SIMA (Surf Industry Manufacturer’s Association) Classic Sunday Awards Ceremony will be Sunday night at Padaro Beach Grill (3765 Santa Claus Lane) from 6:30 to 9 p.m. We’ll be honoring all of the finalists, showcasing a slide show and video presentation honoring the Jeff White Aloha Award Inductee for 2019, Bob Haakenson (a longtime surfboard laminator in Santa Barbara).

We will be launching a new perpetual trophy—the Chris Brown Eternal Stoke trophy—to someone within our community that gives back without expecting anything, just by being themselves, that shares positive energy, and always is carrying that light about them and doing good works within the community.

There are those people, that just the way they are, who they are, and what they do—they’re not looking for affirmation, they’re not looking for recognition. What they’re looking for they already found, and that’s the eternal stoke.

It was a sunny, breezy, beautiful day and bodies were on the move for the 27th annual Orchard to Ocean (O2O) fundraiser run on March 16. Hundreds of speedsters of all ages were out on the 1-kilometer fun run and 5- and 10-kilometer trails, from cross-town to the Bluffs, racing to raise money for Carpinteria Education Foundation. Carpinteria softball doubleheader ends in disappointment

Led by first-year coach Dakotah Wilcox, the Carpinteria High School softball team hosted Nipomo for a non-league doubleheader last weekend, dropping both games, 9-1 and 6-4. The pair of losses puts the Warriors at 3-4 overall on the year, and 1-1 in the Citrus Coast League (CCL). Despite the minor setback, Wilcox, a Carpinteria alum who played softball from 2009 to 2012, is enjoying the ride so far. “A part of me is like I want to be out there, but I just love it,” said Wilcox of her new gig.

The first game in the morning was taken by the Titans, as their freshman fire-baller Key-annah Pu’a pitched a complete game. “I believe it was more of a psychological thing, where it (the velocity of the ball) was in their heads a little bit,” explained Wilcox of the Nipomo phenom who struck out 13 Warriors. Pu’a ended up throwing seven innings, giving up two hits and a run in the 9-1 opener.

In the second game, Carpinteria got it going early. With the game scoreless going into the bottom of the second inning, Kenna Mayer got the first hit for the home team with a single down the left field line. Warrior pitcher Madison Mora then reached first base on an error with Mayer taking third on. Then, Klarissa Flores got to first on a bobbled grounder by the shortstop, scoring Mayer to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Following a shutdown inning by Mora, Carpinteria went back to work in the bottom of the third. Jocelyn Richardson reached on an error, followed by walks

to Becca Bray and Isabel Studt to load the bases. Yaya Gonzalez proceeded with a single up the middle, scoring both Richardson and Bray. Then, Studt, scored an errant throw bringing the count to 4-0. The Warriors loaded the bases for a second time in the inning, but Titan pitcher Mimi Wolf was able to retire the next three batters to keep the deficit at four.

After a one-two-three inning in the third and an inning ending double play in the fourth, Carpinteria achieved their lead going into the fifth. However, the fifth was a different story. After a single

Nipomo brought in Pu’a in the bottom half of the inning to try and keep the Warriors from adding to their lead.

Although Carpinteria was able to get a couple of hits off her in the final three innings, she once again proved to be effective. Meanwhile, the Titan hitters appeared to be figuring out Mora, scoring two in the sixth and two more in the seventh to take a 6-4 lead going into the final inning. Pu’a proceeded to set down the side in order to preserve the 6-4 win.

Coming up, Carpinteria travels to Santa Paula for a CCL matchup on March 21, with the first pitch to be thrown at 3:30 p.m.

Dribbling at dusk, Mavericks drive up program support

Sixty b-balling kids, along with plenty of parents and coaches, met at Carpinteria High School on March 15, to dribble down to the beach and back for the Mavericks’ annual dribble drive fundraiser. After returning from the beach, the Mavericks shot free-throws for two hours, making their sponsors proud while bulking up their donations. Though the tally is still out, this year’s fundraiser is expected to have brought in over $7,000 for the travel basketball program, gathered from hundreds of individual sponsors. Luke Nakasone had the most free-throws, bucketing 756.

But this travel basketball program is about a lot more than free-throws.

Twelve years ago, a group of Carpinterians formed the Mavericks basketball program with the overarching goal of providing mentorship to local youth.

“After playing high school basketball in Carpinteria, then playing college basketball in Los Angeles,” said Ryan Reed, Mavericks co-founder, “I returned home to Carpinteria and helped coach the varsity boys at Carpinteria High School.

I found such an apathy and lack of direction in our youth.” Reed wanted to help change that, so he took what he knew, basketball, and used that as an avenue to teach character to youth. “We started with one eighth-grade team, then we had two teams, then three, and so on. Eventually we added our Mavericks summer camps which have also been a huge hit in our community.”

Mavericks, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, is able to keep the cost for their leagues and summer camp low through community support. Currently, Mavericks’ spring league has 70 kids enrolled, playing in seven teams, spanning grades four through high school. Summer camp last year served 200 kids.

Mavericks players receive an assortment of gear, and travel to tournaments in Ventura, Pasadena and San Diego. “It’s

a life-changer for some of these kids to know that someone in their life loves them, and cheers them on, and believes in them. And we teach and coach hard work, perseverance and most of all, character. We call it ‘the big C.’ That’s what it’s all about,” added Reed. At weekly practices, players learn “character quotes” that they have to repeat back throughout practice, to help ensure the wise words stick with them on and off the court. Mavericks coaches don’t allow the word “can’t” on the courts either, saying they want to create a “healthy encouraging atmosphere.”

March 13 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team beat St. Bonaventure in a non-league match, 13-5. The Warriors had a successful day in doubles with Kirby Zapata/Carlos Costilla going 3-0 and not losing a game. Ian McCurry/Cameron Gralewski went 2-0 together before Gralewski paired with Zaidan Juarez to win their last set. Ben Persoon/Isaac Benitez also won their only set together, 6-0. In singles, Austin Stone went 2-0, while Abraham Hernandez and Corban Pampel each captured a set win. Ian Thomas won his only singles match today for his first ever win in singles. Carpinteria is now 8-1 overall and still 3-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

March 14 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team beat Hueneme in a Citrus Coast League match, 13-5. In singles, Cameron Gralewski, Corban Pampel and Austin Stone each went 2-0 before being subbed out. “Each seemed to win fairly comfortably as all three played sound tennis, but I was also very impressed with Zaidan Juarez and Ian Thomas who came in as subs but played really well and have made huge strides this season,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Luke Nahooikaika/Carlos Costilla went 2-0 before being subbed out; and Kirby Zapata/ Solomon Nahooikaika went 2-1. “We started fast today and built a big lead which allowed us to get all of our players in, which is always a good thing,” explained Bryant. Carpinteria is now 9-1 overall and 4-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

March 19 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team played and beat Nordhoff, 11-7 in a Citrus Coast League (CCL) match. Kirby Zapata/Solomon NahooikaikaAnderson went 3-0, winning the last set when they came back from a 5-1 deficit to win 7-5. Nahooikaika-Anderson/Zapata finished the day 3-0. Luke NahooikaikaAnderson/Cameron Gralewski also went 3-0. Ian McCurry/Myles Morgan went 2-1 on the day. “In singles, Austin Stone was challenged in two of his sets, but his experience really paid off as he was able to close them out,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Carpinteria is now 10-1 overall and 5-0 in the CCL.

March 13 – The Carpinteria High School boys baseball team traveled to South Oxnard to face the Hueneme Vikings, and returned to Carpinteria with a 7-0 win. Senior lefty Noah Nuño was the winner on the mound as he stymied Hueneme by striking out 13, walking zero and giving up five hits over six innings. Sophomore righty Isaac Castillo threw a scoreless seventh, striking out two more Vikings. The Warriors offense was led by Miles Souza as he collected two hits, including a bases-loaded triple to give him four RBI on the afternoon. Chase Mayer had two hits and scored three runs, and Nuño also had two hits. Tyler Cervantes delivered a two out, two RBI hit in a five-run fifth. The Warriors are now 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the Citrus Coast League.

March 15 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team beat Hueneme, 5-4. Miles Souza’s seventh inning drive down the left field line brought in Chase Mayer from third base and secured the second “walk off” Citrus Coast League (CCL) win for the Warriors during the week. The Warriors attack was led by Souza who collected three hits, including a double, two RBI and a run scored. Mayer had two hits and scored the winning run. Jason Warren had a pair of hits in the game also. Mayer and Souza provided the pitching for the Warriors as Mayer started and tossed the first nine outs, striking out two and giving up one hit. “The Vikings played particularly well today and forced our guys to come through in the clutch,” said Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney. The Warriors are now 7-1, 6-1 in the CCL.

March 14 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team captured third place with a 461 at Soule Park in the third Citrus Coast League contest of the season. Leading the Warriors was Jose Gonzalez who carded a second place, 84, behind Carlos Torres of Santa Paula who won with an 81. Gonzalez tied with Sammy Mankoff of Malibu, the current league leader. Gage Dinning also helped the Warriors with an 87, landing him fourth place. “Both (Gonzalez and Dinning) focused and proved how awesome they can be with a little effort,” said Carpinteria coach Chris Cochrane. “I was also pleased with Diego Mendez who shot a career low 91,” added the first-year coach. First place team went to Santa Paula at 455, second, Malibu at 457 and Fillmore was fourth at 474.

March 14 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team went the distance with Hueneme in the match, defeating the Vikings, three games to two. The Warriors had to overcome an injury to their middle blocker, Number-nine, Nathaniel Flores who sprained his ankle. Another middle, Number-10 Luis Zamora had nine kills and three blocks for the night. Number-seven, outside hitter Liam Slade added 14 kills. Freshman Diesel Slade, Number-five outside hitter had 11 kills. Starting Libero, Number-one Miguel Enriquez had a record high, 31 digs. Number-four Gabriel Medel stepped up and took the middle position due to Flores’ injury, making four blocks for the Warriors and added seven more kills for the win. Carpinteria’s overall record is 5-2, and Citrus Coast League record is 3-2.

March 19 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team went through Nordhoff for a fourth consecutive win by a score of 3-0. Number-seven, outside hitter Liam Slade ended up with 12 kills. Starting libero, Number-one Miguel Enriquez ended the night with 27 digs. Setter, Number-11 Luke Nakasone helped the Warriors with 27 assists. The Warriors overall record is 6-2 and Citrus Coast League record is 4-0. Carpinteria’s next match will be April 2nd at Malibu.

Softball

March 14 – The Carpinteria High School softball team won 11-1 over Hueneme, collecting 17 hits for the game. Senior Kylie Barber was the starting pitcher, for the first two innings she gave up no runs, had two strikeouts and allowed one hit.

Senior Eliana Gonzalez led the team in RBI with three, senior Rebecca Bray and sophomore Kenna Mayer brought in two RBI each; and senior Isabel Studt and freshman Madison Mora drove in an RBI each. Junior pitcher Victoria Gonzalez closed out the game for the remaining three innings, allowing two hits, one run and three strikeouts. “The wind was strong; so, we utilized our small-ball, allowing 35 total at bats for our team,” said Warriors coach Dakotah Wilcox. Carpinteria, now playing in the Citrus Coast League has a record of 1-1, and overall is 3-2.

March 19 – The Carpinteria High School softball team dropped an 11-1 decision to Nordhoff. Freshman Madison Mora pitched for the Warriors, going two innings, allowing two runs on four hits, striking out one and walking one. Junior Victoria Gonzalez started the game for Carpinteria, lasting four innings, allowing five hits and nine runs, while striking out three and walking one. Senior Eliana Gonzalez and sophomore Kenna Mayer each had one hit to lead Carpinteria. The Warriors playing in the Citrus Coast League are 1-2, and overall 3-5 with two losses over the weekend to Nipomo. The next game is today at Santa Paula, the fourth league game for the Warriors.

Track and Field

March 16 – The Carpinteria High School track team went to the Maurice Greene Invitational at Oaks Christian on Saturday to compete. Vincent Rinaldi won the Frosh/Soph 200 meters with a meet record time of 22.51 seconds. Rinaldi’s time places him Number-seven all-time for CHS and Number-two on the sophomore list.

Vincent’s brother, Victor Rinaldi, finished sixth in the varsity 400 meters with a time of 52.26. Isaac De Alba was a half-inch off his Personal Record, throwing 45 feet, six inches to finish fourth in the shot put. For the girls, Savannah Alvarez set a Personal Record in the long jump, traveling a distance of 15 feet, two inches.

On Saturday, March 16, the CVYAA Carpinteria Junior Warriors hosted their second annual Cheer Camp, gearing up cheerleaders for the 2019 Tackle and Cheer season that begins in July. Junior Warriors Cheer Boot Camp partnered up with the Carpinteria High School cheerleaders to teach the “mini” cheerleaders a game time cheer and performance which they performed in front of family and friends at Carpinteria High School. Participants ranged in age from 5 to 13.

Junior Warriors will have a walk-up registration for Flag and Tackle Football and Cheer at Foster’s Freeze on Saturday, April 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Coaching applications for all programs are still being accepted. Cate Basketball receives multiple Frontier League Honors

The Frontier League named its All-CIF basketball team with the Cate School team earning several honors. Juniors Ethan Ng and Khadim Pouye were placed on the first team. Making the second team were freshman Mason Oetgen and junior Parker May. Securing Honorable Mention honors were senior Carson Williams, junior Thomas Nettesheim and sophomore Nkemka Chukwumerije.

The Rams finished second in league to Villanova with a record of 6-2, and 13-5 overall. They were eliminated in the quarterfinals of the CIF playoffs, losing a close, intense battle against crosstown rival Carpinteria. Ethan Ng was also named to the CIF Southern Section’s Division Five A second team.

CHS Student-Athletes honored by Citrus Coast League Boys soccer

The Warriors placed third in the Citrus Coast League (CCL) with a record of 5-3-2 and had two players named to first team and two to second team of the All-Citrus Coast League. Seniors Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson and Edgar Mendoza were named to the first team, while junior Jose Jimenez and senior Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson were named to the second team. Honorable Mention recognition was given to seniors Alberto Arroyo and Mario Jimenez, as well as junior Rafael Lopez.

Girls basketball

Although, the young and inexperienced Warriors team finished sixth in the CCL at 0-10, sophomore Hannia Hernandez made second team All-Citrus Coast League. Junior Michelle Alpizar and senior Sallury Hernandez were also named to the Honorable Mention group.

Girls water polo

Carpinteria coach Sergio Castaneda was named Co-CCL Coach of the Year, along with Santa Paula’s Trevor Dasnoit, as the Warriors tied for first with the Cardinals. Carpinteria had three players on the first team and two players named second team All-Citrus Coast League. Freshman Alex Zapata and seniors Jessica Cruz and Sadie Mead were named to the first team; freshman Natalia Perez and sophomore Cassidy Hajducko were put on the second.

Honorable Mentions went to freshmen Briana Rodriguez and Piper Clayton, along with senior Amy Perez.

Girls soccer

The Warriors finished sixth with a record of 0-9-1 in the CCL, but placed one player, senior Emmelly Santillan of the All-Citrus Coast League second team. Three players, junior Erika Estrada and seniors Yaneli Silva, and Isabel Studt were named Honorable Mention.

Boys basketball

The Warriors finished second in the CCL to Hueneme at 7-3. The young squad placed two players each on the first and second All-Citrus Coast League teams. Seniors Noah Nuño and Chris Ramirez were placed on the first team; while, freshman Dylan O’Neill and junior Ian Reed were named to the second.

Sophomore Jose Sanchez and junior Luke Nakasone were granted Honorable Mention status. The standout athletes led the Warriors to their best season ever, reaching the CIF semifinals for the first time. As a result, Carpinteria was also invited to the state tournament, where they fell in the first round. The Warriors finished second in the Citrus Coast League, on the to Hueneme with a record of 7-3 and an overall record of 15-15. Nuño made eight of 10 free throws in the closing moments against crosstown rival Cate in the quarterfinals, to help propel his team past the Rams, 51-46 in front of a packed Warriors Gym.

Mac brown excavating works to remove the 14,000-cubic-yard berm at second beach. The wall of sand was constructed last november, and berm removal occurs annually each spring. The berm goes up in the fall each season to protect the waterfront from ocean swells, especially during winter storms, said Matt Roberts, director of Parks and Recreation for the city of Carpinteria.

Tragedy in the dark

the summerlaNd shore f r a N d aV i s Heading for Denver, Amtrak’s Coast Starlight was on schedule, gliding into the dark Santa Clara Valley when we came to an abrupt stop. No familiar explanation like a halt on the siding to wait for another train to pass.

Announcements apologized for the delay and thanked us for patience. Word slid through the pneumatic doors between cars, passing down the aisles. Two “trespassers” on the tracks, we heard. I learned later that railroads refer to injury and death incidents on the tracks as “rail trespass casualties.”

How are you supposed to feel when you’re on a train that has killed people?

Horrified? Sad? Complicit? Angry? All of the above ran through my mind during the five hours we sat waiting.

What were those two people doing on the tracks somewhere south of Gilroy?

What terrible misjudgment, mistake, blindness sent those two down such a dark path? A mystery, the only certainty their deaths.

Emergency vehicles gathered on a nearby road, lights flashing. I walked to the last car and peered out the rear window. Far behind a man walked the tracks, swinging a flashlight from side to side. I didn’t want to think what he might find.

Life goes on even when it doesn’t.

People in the dining car finished their meals. People in the lounge car ordered more wine. We grew restless, impatient with the delay, hours in a dark field, hours behind schedule, hours away from our own safe places, friends, bed.

The train sat, fuming, air vents blowing, the glowing portals of its window shining out on blackness. The conductor, walking through, said the train couldn’t move until investigators gave permission.

Like a plane, the train has a black box, with a video, that must be examined. The café car attendant came through handing out bottled water.

We waited in the silence, caught in winter’s shiver, the moonless night of the dark field. We sat and fidgeted and tended our phones and tried not to look at the black glass of the windows. We and the dead had come together on this train, and we had to abide with them for the time it took. But we were late, so late.

River. I couldn’t take my eyes off the river’s changing faces, running full and muddy brown in the foothills, blue or green higher up, swift, ice-edged, still, snow covered, marked by crossing animal prints.

We passed deer standing on the frozen river, elk and antelope, wild horses, Canada geese and wild turkeys. High in the Rockies, we reached the continental divide in the middle of the six-mile Moffett Tunnel.

Denver’s lively, ornate train station brimmed with restaurants, delis and shops. We made our way through snow and slush to the Oxford Hotel a block away. I loved the hotel for its faded elegance—crackling fireplace in the lobby, Remington sculptures, a caged canary, battered oak-paneled elevators where the rugs, printed with the days of the week, were changed every day.

We spent a couple of days sightseeing, sticking to the city’s center, using the free shuttle that plies the downtown mall. The Denver Art Museum building was stunning and the collection impressive. We took a guided tour of the capitol building and climbed up to the dome for views of the city.

Denverites repeatedly told us it wasn’t usually so cold in March. Which was ironic, considering the “cyclone bomb” that walloped the city afterwards.

On the train clock-time fades away, time measured by what you see—rivulets in the brown river, sand bars and rocky crags, leafless cottonwoods, snowdrifts and flying geese. What the eye takes in, how it is experienced and recorded in the brain—every viewed thing—is like a second ticked off, an experience that can be longer or shorter than clock time.

It becomes something else—eye’s time.

One good thing: Sleeping in your own bed after a time away.

Rotary helps with Disaster Relief

The Noon Rotary Club of Carpinteria donated $3,524 to the Carpinteria Children’s Project to help local families who continue to suffer economic hardship due to last year’s fire and flood. Scholarships for the families’ children insures their continued education and makes a brighter future possible. The funds were made possible with proceeds from the 2018 Rotary Talent Showcase.

Patricia Houghton Clarke recently shared her work of photos of people in villages, towns and neighborhoods from around the world from her project “Facing Ourselves.”

From common people to those in power, from the old to the young and the rich to the poor, the photos tell “life stories.” After taking portraits, Clarke enlarges the images and displays them around the towns and villages where they were taken. Clarke plans to make Carpinteria her next photo project with the help of several local organizations.

Otherwise a beautiful trip

The train to Denver leaves San Francisco in the morning and travels two days and a night to Colorado’s capital city.

The long haul across California’s middle, through the Sierra, across the high deserts of Nevada and Utah, and up and over the Rockies is revelatory.

Snow piled deep in the Sierra, cottony white weighing pine branches, railroad snow plows busy. Deep in a canyon, the American River raced between snow banks. At the summit, Donner Lake was still frozen over, snow flurries dimming the light.

Past Reno, we made a long, straight run through desert scrub, lit with its own kind of beauty as the sinking sun reflected rain puddles.
