Chevron begins decommissioning work on Carpinteria oil and gas plant

Chevron has commenced decommissioning operations related to the Carpinteria Oil and Gas Plant. Working with the city of Carpinteria, the oil company has initiated the process of permanently dismantling the plant, according to Aly Hakam, project manager for Chevron North America. “Some areas will remain active to assist with the offshore well plugging and closure that will take place over the next few years,” said Hakam. “As the first stage of this process, we are removing idle and unused equipment from the plant.”

Equipment removal work is being conducted Monday to Friday between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., with truck traffic routed along Dump Road and Carpinteria Avenue to the Bailard onramp. “Chevron places the highest priority on the safety of our workforce, the community and the environment,” said Hakam, “and we will make certain that proper precautions are taken in conjunction with these activities.”

With funding from Cottage Hospital’s Research Institute, the UCSB Koegel Autism Center is now recruiting local families of children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ages 12 months to 48 months) for a research study focused on parent-child interactions and autism intervention.

Eligible families of a child with autism will receive, at no cost, multiple developmental assessments and 12 months (eight hours/week) of a motivation-based, personalized treatment (modified Pivotal Response Treatment) that focuses on improving social engagement and language.

Gandrud elected to leadership in California Republican Party

Former Carpinteria City Councilman and conservative activist Greg Gandrud has been elected to the position of treasurer of the California Republican Party. Since 1999, Gandrud has represented the First Supervisorial District for the Santa Barbara County Republican Party, serving in the leadership roles of treasurer, secretary, first vice-chairman and chairman.

Fire District promotes three firefighters

Three firefighters have moved up the ranks at the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District (CFSPD)—Brian Roberson, John Kelley Baker and Nicholas Koepenick.

On Jan. 19, Brian Roberson was sworn in as Battalion Chief after 17 years with the district as a firefighter, fire engineer and most recently, fire captain. Roberson, who has a BS in Forestry and Natural Resources Management and a master’s in Public Health had earlier in his career served as a fire engine operator, hotshot and firefighter, squad boss and captain for the Los Padres National Forest. Roberson lives in Fire Chief Greg Fish swears in Encino with his wife Rebecca and their Battalion Chief Brian Roberson. two daughters.

A little over a month later, John Kelley Baker and Nicholas Koepenick were promoted to the rank of Fire Captain on Feb. 24. Baker has been with CSFPD since October of 2002, starting as a firefighter/paramedic. Before becoming a fire fighter, Kelley was an EMT-Paramedic for American Medical Response. Born and raised locally, Baker continues to live within the district with his wife Cindy and their sons Jesse and Kody.

After working as a fire fighter for Los Padres National Forest and as a beach lifeguard for Carpinteria and Jalama Beaches, Koepenick was first hired as a firefighter for CFSPD in September of 2013. Four years later he was promoted to fire engineer.

“Home-grown” in Carpinteria, Koepenick continues to reside locally, now in Montecito, where he lives with his wife Anisha and their son Kyler and daughter Tallulah.

Warmington buys Green Heron residential development project

In late January, escrow closed on a $2,325,000 purchase of the 3.87-acre parcel known as Green Heron Springs, 1300 Cravens Lane, owned by Cravens Lane, LLC, according to Redfin. When the check cleared, Warmington Residential and their joint venture equity partner the Resmark Companies were the new owners.

The residential development project, approved in 2005 and again in 2017 by the city of Carpinteria Planning Commission, will now be known as Seahouse, and features 31 coastal farmhouse-inspired homes ranging from 1,261 to 2,289 square feet, including flats, townhomes and detached single-family homes. Four of the Seahouse units will be moderate income homes set aside for qualified applicants.

As a residential enclave, Seahouse will feature a natural spring, a community pavilion with a fire pit and outdoor seating and gathering areas, mature, preserved heritage trees, community gardens and a pocket park. The new owner/developers anticipate model completion in the fall of 2019.

Dogs are community members too

We are local residents, tax payers, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers. We are patrons of local businesses. Some of us are authors of books, attorneys, medical assistants, nurses, teachers, realtors, firemen, welders, painters, therapists, retired older people and business owners. We love our dogs and we enjoy watching our dogs get socialized.

They romp, run, kiss each other. Each dog has a unique character. I consider our pets a part of our community too.

We have been responsible dog owners and have been respectfully using El Carro Park for the past eight years. We police each other. When we spot a dog doing their business, we alert the owner to pick up. We are not negligent pet owners, as has been said.

People who do not appreciate our dogs, please understand, we are not trying to push our dogs on you. We are asking for a designated time and place to let the dogs play, perhaps a time when it is your time not to come to the park. We respect the children playing soccer and baseball. We do not take our dogs to the park to interrupt the children playing.

Perhaps there is a time for dog play.

We are a group of people who have common ground. We have become friends. It is a part of why we enjoy living in Carpinteria. Let’s not be divided around this issue. Let’s work together to find common ground.

Perhaps business owners would like to contribute towards our endeavor. We are C-Dogs.org. You may contribute there. It is tax deductible.

Hopefully, the policies the city creates can be established to reflect compromise, so the needs of dog owners, dogs and non-dog owners can be considered.

Carpinteria’s gentrification problem

Construction is well underway on 8th Street for a new home. Sadly, an old craftsman style cottage was demolished to make way for our city’s new vision of how our downtown district will look in the future. The old house wasn’t really anything special but, it was our family home since 1943 and we loved that old house. We sold the property to a nice couple thinking they would replace it with a similar style home in the downtown tradition as many others have done.

We were wrong. The design they chose was so out of character with the neighbor-

hood that we were certain it would never pass our strict building codes. But it did; even passing a final City Council appeal by a 3-2 vote.

What the officials who voted to pass this project failed to understand was that this uncharacteristic design will greatly exacerbate the gentrification of our downtown community. Affluent others will come and demand to build their own McMansions. Property values will increase so that only the very wealthy will be able to afford to live there.

Property values and rents will increase exponentially. All of this will lead to an economic departure of the blue-collar and migrant working-class people who have traditionally resided there. This is happening right now as Latinos are being pushed out in droves from Santa Barbara and moving to less expensive parts of the county as reported in the Santa Barbara Independent. It is not hard to believe that this is probably happening here too. The downtown 8th Street has historically been home to people coming here from all over the U.S. and other countries. This vital and essential diversity will sadly be gone forever because of the lack of foresight by some of our city officials.

apartments or more greenhouses. The cultivation practices required for growing cannabis will force avocado growers out of business. Why? The orchards will no longer be allowed to control pests using either organic or nonorganic sprays.

The density of traffic is increasing. The cannabis grow operators are employing many more workers who arrive and

depart daily using our rural streets as parking lots.

The smell will continue to permeate our valley including the nearby Carpinteria schools. Even people on the freeway have noticed how our valley has begun to stink.

Our safe town will and has been targeted by armed robbers and criminals. We have already had several robberies occur at cannabis operations in broad daylight.

The cute rural roads will be lined with eight-foot chain link fences, guards, parked cars and ugly cannabis growing facilities. Take a look, it’s happening now.

The Santa Barbara County supervisors are proposing banning cannabis cultivation on smaller (less than 20 acres) AG-1 properties in the Santa Ynez area to protect nearby residents from cannabis-related impacts. Surely, these same concerns exist in Carpinteria Valley which has a large number of these smaller parcels in close proximity to schools, parks and residences. I am going to complain to the supervisors including Das Williams.

Obituary

Helen Sherman Hathaway 8/2/1919 – 3/5/2019

Helen Sherman Hathaway passed away peacefully on March 5, 2019.

Helen was born in Santa Barbara, California, on August 2, 1919, to Jessie and Veder Sherman. She grew up on the west side of Santa Barbara and had many fond memories of the “old days.” A true Santa Barbara native, she spent most of her youth at local beaches paddle boarding.

Helen graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1937 and enrolled at Santa Barbara State College (now UCSB). She majored in art, receiving a bachelor’s

degree and a teaching credential in 1941.

Helen’s first teaching job was in Ojai. She eventually taught at Carpinteria Union High School, where she was instrumental in designing the famous logo for the Carpinteria Warriors.

In December 1952, Helen married Donald Hathaway while he served in the U.S. Army. They purchased their lifelong home in Montecito, where Don started his career with the Montecito Fire Department.

Helen’s interest in art carried on throughout her life, which was evident in the many watercolor paintings that Helen produced. She was also an avid reader and loved Western, horror, and science fiction movies. Helen enjoyed family camping trips, spending time at the Hathaway Ranch above Carpinteria, and tending to her chickens. One of her great joys for many years was surreptitiously decorating the “freeway tree” on San Ysidro Road in Montecito at Christmas time, joined by family and close friends.

Helen is survived by her daughter Ronda Hathaway and Barbara Essex; son Dean and wife Julie Hathaway; and grandsons Lucas and Dylan Hathaway.

The family wishes to thank Alexander Gardens for their loving and compassionate care, especially Helen’s angel Lupe.

Memorial services will be held at Carpinteria Cemetery on Friday, March 15, at 10 a.m. The family suggests memorial contributions to Visiting Nurse & Hospice Care, 512 E. Gutierrez St., Santa Barbara CA 93103.

Carpinteria man seeks living kidney donation

Stuart Carey (aka Stuart Eiseman) is a Carpinteria resident and well-known painter and jazz singer who has been on dialysis since 2016. That’s when a sepsis infection left him with permanent kidney damage. Although dialysis keeps him alive, it will ultimately shorten his life and, in the meantime, tether him to a machine for up to 24 hours each month.

Last month, Carey attended a workshop hosted by Santa Barbara nephrologist Dr. Michael Fisher where he learned that the key to getting a lifesaving transplant from a living donor is telling his story to as many people as possible.

Because March is National Kidney Month, devoted to raising awareness about a disease that already kills more Americans each year than either breast or prostate cancer, Carey agreed to tell his story to Coastal View News.

“By far the hardest thing about this illness is the toll it is taking on my partner,” Carey said on a break from his work at the Santa Barbara County Health Department, where he was a medical social services practitioner for many years and is now an administrative office professional. “Steven was the first in line to donate, but his own pre-existing health conditions made him ineligible. Since then, four other friends have stepped forward. Three of them were also rejected and one is still awaiting the results of her screenings.”

Some 31 million Americans have chronic kidney disease. Half-a-million of them are on dialysis and awaiting a transplant from a deceased donor, which can take five to 10 years, depending on where you live. The only way to accelerate the process is to find a living donor.

“The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part”

In the last few years—since the release of the first “Lego Movie”—a lot of people have come to realize, or at least come to feel, that everything is not awesome. Like, in the world—not everything’s awesome. Nor is everything cool, even when you’re part of a team.

Indeed, in “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part,” untoward environmental dynamics are raining on Finn’s (Jadon Sand) Lego parade. The destabilizing element in Finn’s world is his baby-inchief sister, who wants to play too, but in her own way. The pre-existing characters in Lego world—which, recall, include Emmet (Chris Pratt), Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), Batman (Will Arnett), MetalBeard (Nick Offerman), Benny (Charlie Day) and so many others—are rightly terrified by this development.

Emmett, ever the optimist, tries to reach out to the new sister-made Lego Duplo creations. But things don’t go well. And before you know it, Bricksburg is Icksburg—a dystopian “heck”scape ala Mad Max. Some of the more heroic Lego characters, particularly a bunch of the literal superheroes, head out to baby sister’s Lego world—i.e., the “Systar System”—to fight back, but when they don’t return, those left behind begin to lose hope.

Except for Emmet, that is. He’s still listening to his uplifting pop music, ordering super sugary coffee from a run-down coffee shack, waiving “hello” to all these mean biker dudes and terrifying robots, and, well, one could say, making the best of it.

Until his best friends get taken away

by General Sweet Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz), the head of the Duplo army. It’s strange, actually. General Mayhem comes along to say that their leader, Queen Wa’Nabi (Tiffany Haddish), wants to marry the leader of Bricksburg (now Apocalypseburg), whoever that is.

Batman thinks it’s him, but then so do a bunch of other people, so General Mayhem takes them all away. Emmet is clearly not leadership material, so he gets left behind.

But that’s when Emmet finally sounds the alarm, gets pissed, kicks it into gear, and pursues the enemy.

With the help of a familiar sounding bad boy, Rex Dan-

gervest (Chris Pratt), Emmet makes it to the Systar System where his friends are being held.

Well, but now they’re not actually being held—they seem to live there now. They appear happy and content. Almost too-content. And Queen Wa’Nabi is nice-enough, but in a creepy, I-may-actually-dismember-you sort of way.

Emmet and Rex don’t buy it. Neither does Wyldstyle. They think everyone has been brainwashed. So, it is up to them, or at least they think it is, to shake everyone back to reality, or what they think is reality.

While watching “The Lego Movie 2,” I laughed just about as much as I expected to laugh. Pretty close. Which, first and foremost, is praise for the movie, because I expected to laugh a lot. I liked “The Lego Movie” and really liked “The Lego Batman Movie.” This sequel is cut from the same, witty cloth.

Like the previous movies, “The Lego Movie 2” is funny, irreverent, fast-paced and quirky in all the right ways. Kids will love all the fast action, exploding Legos and slapstick humor, while parents will crack up at sharp puns and cultural references. So, yeah, this is a Lego movie. And that’s a good thing.

That said, I didn’t laugh more than I was expecting. And I liked “The Lego Batman Movie” better. Also, while the moral in “The Lego Movie 2” is both well-executed and timely—and I really do appreciate it addressing the not awesomeness in life—it won’t exactly blow you away with its profundity.

So, “The Lego Movie 2” is good, not great.

“The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part” is rated PG for mild action and rude humor.

Dog park and single-use plastics dominate city meeting

By William armshaW Discussion of a new dog park and a clampdown on single-use plastics dominated the March 11 Carpinteria City Council meeting, as citizen involvement reached a new height. Dozens of residents came to the council meeting, cheering and applauding their favorites, and at one point engaging the council at large in back and forth banter.

The council meeting opened with a recognition of the 100th anniversary of the Russell Cup Track and Field Meet, before turning to a report from City Manager Dave Durflinger and Parks and Recreation Director Matthew Roberts.

Durflinger gave a comprehensive update on debris basin clearance and flood protection efforts. Drawing on stunning photographic evidence from the 1969 flood, Roberts talked of the importance of recognizing that Carpinteria, “once one of the most flood-prone cities in Santa Barbara County,” is now one of the most floodresistant. Roberts went on to state that that the Carpinteria Valley Watershed is the “agent of protection for the city,” and that improvements to the Franklin and Santa Monica channels, anchored by the Santa Monica debris basin, have “saved the Carpinteria community from untold misery.” Proper debris basin upkeep is crucial, said the Parks and Recreation director, arguing that all the debris basins downstream from the Thomas Fire need ongoing maintenance. The city is always “one storm away from having to start all over again,” said Roberts, who discussed using materials cleared from the Santa Monica basin to combat beach erosion.

The council then moved to the approval of Ordinance 727, introducing new regulations on polystyrene and single-use

plastics. The draft ordinance prohibits single-use straws, cutlery and stirrers, with an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) exemption for those needing straws. The ordinance also directs local restaurants to offer plastic lids only upon request, and mandates that food containers be marine degradable, compostable or recyclable.

The ordinance is scheduled to take effect on Jan. 1, 2020, to allow time for education and outreach. Several Carpinteria residents commended the council for their environmental leadership. Penny Owens, with Santa Barbara Channelkeeper, testified that “every time we’re out in the field we see the impact of single-use plastics,” and thanked the council for “leading the way for other coastal communities.” All council members voiced support for the ordinance, which passed 5-0.

The council next turned to the fraught issue of the dog park feasibility study.

Roberts outlined the options open to the city: whether to create a shared-use park combining an off-leash area with existing park facilities, or to establish a new, dedicated space with off-leash attributes such as proper signage, obscured views to reduce dog anxiety and features for both large and small animals. Roberts offered several alternatives for the shared-use park, including carving-out space at El Carro, Monte Vista or Memorial Park, the three largest in Carpinteria. For the dedicated dog park, Roberts suggested properties at Lagunitas, Dump Road and Creek Park, saying “there are advantages to this approach, because you’re not displacing” any other uses such as youth sports or communal barbeque pits. The Parks and Recreation director discussed design elements such as good fencing, bike and water access, seating, restrooms and shade, as well as liability issues, ar-

He contended that the key to successful dog park operations in similar coastal cities has been the inclusion of a community advocacy group dedicated to maintaining the park and acting as docents to guide visitors and advise dogowners of relevant regulations.

Many members of C-DOG, the Carpinteria dog owners group, were in attendance to support the proposal.

Councilman Gregg A. Carty asked if members were prepared to act as docents, as Roberts had suggested, to which audience members responded with a resounding “yes!” Carty went on to extol the value of adding a dog park, saying, “we have to remember we’re a tourist community,” and adding that with the advent of higher-density development the need for an off-leash area has become more pressing than ever. Mayor Wade Nomura also expressed support, despite having some questions about upkeep costs. Roberts responded by quoting a document authored by C-DOG citing an annual maintenance cost of some $60,000.

After some back and forth, Councilman Fred Shaw inquired if C-DOG would be amenable to contributing, to which Cindy

Burke, speaking for the group, responded “C-DOG wants to be a partner with you, we’re excited about fundraising for this.” Burke went on to say that she believes “our parks are for everyone in this community, families, children and dogowners,” and that group members take seriously the responsibilities inherent in dog ownership, from waste removal to maintaining distance from particularly troublesome mutts. Group member Van Fleischer said that Carpinteria dog lovers are “responsible stewards,” pointing to actions already taken to informally ban poorly behaved dogs and irresponsible owners from common park areas.

Shaw, in the line of the night, said that “as a walking mail carrier, I’ve always been concerned about off-leash dogs, having encountered thousands in my life.”

He spoke on behalf of a dedicated park, supporting the Dump Road location as being “already fenced, already remediated, with space enough” to welcome all city dog lovers. Councilmen Roy Lee and Al Clark stressed the importance of proceeding on a trial basis and expressed concerns about liability issues with shared-use spaces. Council members directed staff to explore the Dump Road and Lagunitas sites as possibilities for a new, dedicated off-leash park.

Outcomes of a wet winter

Burn areas are turning green By mElinda Burns Seventeen storms, 32 inches of rain on the mountainside, and three largescale evacuations have kept South Coast residents on edge this winter, especially below the burn scar of the Thomas Fire.

Since the rains began in mid-November, county crews have cleaned out the debris basins in Montecito and Carpinteria nine times, carting away about 11,000 truckloads of mud, boulders and fallen trees that have washed down the canyons and into the urban area. The cleanup has cost the county $2.6 million.

To catch even more debris in future storms, vowing that “we can’t do nothing,” the Partnership for Resilient Communities, a nonprofit group founded by wealthy Montecitans, has raised $4.4 million and is looking for $1 million more to install six steel-wire, fence-like “ring” nets across Cold Spring, San Ysidro and Buena Vista creeks by mid-May. Test soil drilling is expected to begin next week.

Meanwhile, nature is healing itself. For the first time since the Thomas Fire of December 2017 and the deadly debris flow of Jan. 9, 2018 in Montecito, the chaparral in the burn area is bursting back to life.

According to the leaders of a Los Padres National Forest team that is monitoring the burn scar, this winter’s rains—not too heavy or close together—have been ideal for greening up the blackened mountainside.

“We’re not there yet this winter,” said Kevin Cooper, a biologist who leads the team with Jonathan “Yonni” Schwartz, a Los Padres geologist. “It’s still early in the growing season. But the grass and brush are re-sprouting and it looks really good.

I think we’ll see significant growth from now through August.”

So much growth, in fact, that Cooper and Schwartz are predicting that by next fall, 60 percent of the vegetation that burned up in the Thomas Fire will have recovered in the mountains above Montecito and Carpinteria, on average.

And at 60 percent of vegetative recovery after a fire, studies show that the risk of a debris flow or a debris-laden flood drops significantly, the scientists say.

“We’re looking for that break,” Cooper said. “We’re still in a lot of risk this year, and there still will be risk next year—but it will be greatly reduced.”

Re-vegetation is key

Scientists say that it can take five to seven years for the vegetation in a burn scar to fully recover. On the heels of the Coyote Fire in 1964, a debris flow roared down San Ysidro Creek, destroying homes near East Valley Road. Five years later, during the winter of 1969, some of the same homes were hit by a massive debris-laden flood. That year, 58 inches of rain fell at Gibraltar Dam. Chaparral holds soil in place, slows down water running across the surface and allows rain to soak into the ground.

Grasses and shrubs help dissipate the energy of raindrops falling onto the surface, and they provide shade that keeps the soil moist and cool.

“The vegetation is a key component to putting this country back to where it was before the fire,” Cooper said.

To document the extent of the regrowth above Montecito, Cooper and Schwartz periodically bushwhack their way down from East Camino Cielo, scrambling

around cliffs and waterfalls as they go.

On a recent trip to Cold Spring Canyon, they spotted a patch of chaparral six feet high that had somehow escaped the Thomas Fire. Schwartz crawled under some branches and found everything intact: topsoil, roots, leaf litter and pieces of bark rotting in the dirt.

“There wasn’t any erosion at all,” he said. “It’s as if nothing happened there, despite the exact same rainfall. It’s proof of how important this vegetation cover is.”

Based on their most recent observations, the scientists estimate that in the lower watersheds, nearer the urban areas of Montecito and Carpinteria, 60 percent of the chaparral that was there before the Thomas Fire has already grown back,

while in the upper watershed, nearer the ridgeline, the regrowth is presently at about 35 percent. With the rains and the advent of warmer weather, they say, the mountainside will look very green through June. Grasses and wildflowers will dry up over the summer, but they will still provide protection for the soil.

At the same time, Cooper and Schwartz caution that the rainy season is not over.

There’s a lot of soil and rocky material sitting loosely on the steep slopes, and storms such as the one on March 5 can still pack a powerful punch.

“The last thing we want to do is give people a false sense of security,” Schwartz said. “At least for the remainder of this winter, there is still a very high level of threat out there.”

In 1973, Stanley Martinez started as a courtesy clerk at Jordano’s supermarket, now Albertsons on Casitas Pass. Martinez, born and raised in Carpinteria, went on to have a 46-year career in the grocery business, the bulk of which he spent as a store director for Albertsons, first in Carpinteria, then throughout Santa Barbara and Goleta, and finally, since 2017, back in his home store on Casitas Pass. Martinez retired on March 8.

“The best part of returning to the Carpinteria Albertsons was re-meeting many of the people and customers that I knew from when I was younger,” said Martinez.

“That was probably the best part of coming back—visiting with people that I knew from way back and working again in the community where I live.”

Martinez looks forward to visiting his three sons and two grandchildren now that he is retired. He’s already planned a trip to Texas for the summer to visit his sons, and another trip is in the works to Hawaii to visit his sister. “I like to work around the yard and I’m hoping to do more of that,” added Martinez, “I’m not really a TV watcher, but I may read more.” Who knows, maybe he’ll join one of Carpinteria’s book clubs.

Changing habits to ease climate change and slow global warming Cvn

living the green life erin maker Climate change, which has been used interchangeably with global warming, is a highly politicized term, much to climate scientists’ chagrin. It is often discussed in ways intended to confuse or sway public opinion, so let’s stick with the basics: Climate change refers to the change in the usual weather conditions found in a place.

For instance, this winter we are experiencing unusually cold weather for extended periods of time; meanwhile, the Arctic is experiencing unusually warm weather. But when we discuss climate change in a global sense, we are referring to the change in the overall climate of the Earth. This type of climate change is always happening, but on a geologic time scale, over hundreds of millions of years. So how does this relate to the term “global warming”?

Global warming refers to a part of climate change that is happening. This is an important distinction. Global warming was a term coined to summarize the results of human-caused release of heattrapping gasses (greenhouse gasses) that have been linked to melting glaciers and

dying forests. The overall temperature of the planet is warming. When scientists discuss global warming, they are talking about that overall temperature rise.

Climate change encompasses that temperature rise, as well as weather extremes, changes in weather patterns and shifting wildlife habitats.

When human activity releases greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, it creates the greenhouse effect. The Earth’s atmosphere traps some solar energy. That energy radiating out into space from the surface of the planet is absorbed in the atmosphere by greenhouse gasses and re-emitted in all directions, instead of into space as it would have otherwise. The energy that radiates back down to the planet heats the lower part of the atmosphere and the surface, thus increasing the overall temperature of the planet.

As I mentioned above, the climate is always changing. The thing that was once debated, and that has been highly politicized, is the rate at which the climate is changing and if human-caused pollution has accelerated it. The consensus among climate scientists is that emissions from human activities has accelerated the rate at which the earth’s climate is changing.

Accelerating that rate means that evolution cannot keep up with the changes in weather patterns, which can have devastating impacts to habitats all over the world. Coastal communities like ours are more vulnerable due to rising sea levels, forested areas are more vulnerable to increases in wildfire activity, storms become more intense, we have longer periods of

There are things that we can do to reduce these changes. Carbon dioxide from fossil fuels used to drive cars or run coal-burning power plants is one of the main sources of greenhouse gasses.

The second-largest source is deforestation and decay of biomass. Driving less, eating food that is locally sourced and in season, and using less energy and water overall are ways that we can easily contribute to those positive changes. Many of those require changing habits, which can sometimes seem daunting. I suggest starting small. Next time you are about to drive for a short errand, ask yourself if it is necessary. Can you walk or bike

there instead, and enjoy the errand that much more? We are fortunate to live in an area that has locally grown produce yearround, taking advantage of that is another way to reduce your personal impact, with the added benefit of the food tasting better because it is in season. Change starts with all of us as individuals.

Whether shaping a surfboard or painting the Topa Topa mountains, Matt Moore brings out the curves that reflect the natural world. Now in his 60s, Moore first learned to draw perspectives and paint en plein air as a boy from his grandfather Ila Mathew Moore, who would come up from Los Angeles to stay at Carpinteria State Beach near the Moore family home in Concha Loma. “I spent a lot of time with him,” Moore said of his grandfather, “he always had his paints out… I was very interested in the paint smell of the turpentine and the results!” The landscapes of California are Moore’s favorite subjects—from Big Sur, to scenes from his property in the Santa Ynez mountain backcountry, to the local Channel Islands. With recent shows at Island Brewing Company and his son Ryan’s Lucky Llama Coffee, as well as sites in Santa Barbara, Moore’s work is being enjoyed by a wider audience. He says it can be hard to part with some of his paintings, but many of them are for sale and he accepts commissions.

Working outdoors, Moore speaks of “racing the light” to complete a painting before conditions change or the sun sets. He generally completes 90 percent of a painting in one sitting—even on the larger pieces that can run to 3-feet by 5-feet in size. Moore says he’ll finish some paintings in his studio, but more and more prefers to complete works entirely in the field, as he did on the evening of March 11 when the setting sunlight draped the hills in golden light and literally stopped him in his tracks. Matt Moore has a show of current works on display at Lucky Llama Coffee, 5100 Carpinteria Ave., through the month of May.

Local artist keeps a daily practice

Completing a new painting each day (“alla prima”), local artist Sharon Schock focuses on bold, colorful urban landscapes. A graduate of Westmont College (B.A. Fine Art, 2006) Schock works in oil paints, switching between city and landscape scenes. “It’s really the light involved that draws me to a subject,” she says, “when you focus on light you find that things are always changing…” Schock has won numerous awards and scholarships including an arts scholarship at Westmont 2002 to 2006, and first place in the “Art along the Creek” event in 2011. A show of her work will hang at Island Brewing Company, 5049 6th St., through April 21, with an artist reception on Friday, March 15, from 5 to 7 p.m.

Rotary celebrates 10 years of Talent Showcase

By DeBra Herrick The Carpinteria Rotary Charitable Foundation’s 10th annual Talent Showcase will be Saturday, March 23, at 7 p.m. at the Alcazar Theatre, with a red-carpet reception at 6 p.m. The event promises a show bursting with musical and dance performances from classical pianists, ukuleles, guitar, ballet, samba and more.

Local news reporter John Palminteri will be the master of ceremonies.

One hundred percent of proceeds from the Talent Showcase go to Carpinteria Unified School District music programs.

For years, the district’s music program has been supported by the donations from the Rotary Talent Showcase, which directly contributes to a vital component of the schools’ curriculum. “The music classroom is a unique setting unlike any

else. The music curriculum not only teaches students how to read, write and perform music notation, but it also teaches them about the role that music plays in society,” stated Thomas Pavia, CUSD instrumental music instructor.

“Self-discipline, community, teamwork, leadership and performance are skill sets that are acquired and practiced through the study of instrumental music. As students explore their world of music, they learn to be the best that they can be in everything they do, giving good performances each and every day.”

CHS boys tennis starts season strong

Having shared or won the past two Frontier League titles, the Carpinteria High School boys tennis team looks to be off to another stellar year. The Warriors are currently 6-1 with their only loss coming against Ventura, defending 2018 CIF-SS champions. They also occupy first place in the inaugural season of the Citrus Coast League (CCL) at 2-0.

With seven seniors on the squad, many who have played under coach Charles Bryant for four years, the Warriors main strength is in its doubles teams of Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson and Kirby Zapata, and Luke NahooikaikaAnderson and Cameron Gralewski. Zapata and the Nahooikaika twins are also team captains, along with senior Myles Morgan. Morgan and freshman Austin Stone often switch off as the squad’s number-one singles players. “This is the best team I’ve ever had here by far,” said Bryant who also depends on the play of Carlos Costilla and Corban Pampel.

where the Warriors had been matching the two CIF powerhouses nearly stroke-to-stroke. “I think this is the best team I’ve played on, we have the most overall talent,” said Morgan who’ll have to watch from the bench after suffering a knee injury in the win against Nordhoff. “I’ve played with the same doubles partner for the past three years … and we’re pretty good, and I think the rest of the team has gotten a lot better, like singles, especially with the freshman (Stone),” said Solomon, one of the twins on the team.

With only four teams in the league, Carpinteria will end up playing three matches each against fellow CCL members: Hueneme, Malibu and Nordhoff this year. They’ll need to utilize all their depth, particularly with makeup matches against Cate and Santa Barbara, and other strong teams such as San Juan Hills and Thacher..

The Warriors host Hueneme on Thursday, March 14, with the first serve at 3:30 p.m. on the campus courts.

CHS boys volleyball sweeps against Malibu

The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team got an early jump on the Citrus Coast League Standings (CCL) with a 3-0 sweep of Malibu last week (March 7) at Warriors Gym. The match originally scheduled for 6 p.m., was moved up to the late afternoon as the visiting Sharks were unable to field a JV squad due to injuries.

The win puts the Warriors in first place in the young season, with a 1-0 league record, and a record of 3-5 overall. The match scores for the victory were: 25-21, 25-8 and 25-18.

At first, it looked as though Carpinteria had a difficult time adjusting to the early start, travelling eight to one in the first game. Following a timeout, the Warriors took the lead and never looked back.

“We were playing some good, organized volleyball,” said Warriors coach Dino

Garcia. “We had a little lack of energy here and there, but for the most part, we stayed composed throughout the whole match,” explained Garcia.

Outside hitter Liam Slade knocked down 13 kills for the afternoon. “Number seven (Liam Slade) provided ‘grade A’ communication and unstoppable kills at the net,” said Garcia of one of his standouts. Freshman Diesel Slade, another outside hitter, helped the Warriors with nine kills. “Starting libero, number one, Miguel Enriquez had solid defense in the back row and had 16 digs for the night,” explained Garcia.

Carpinteria continues CCL play when they host Nordhoff on Tuesday, March 19, with a scheduled start time of 6 p.m.

A springtime that feels like winter, and shaping the next generation CVN

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH With the days getting longer and the lush green singing off the hillsides, thoughts of summer days with the family down at fourth beach begin to stir. Never mind the past two days of 45-knot winds, cold air and the dump zone that the beach has become, summer is out there waiting for us all. Of course, when summer comes there won’t be much surfing in the immediate surroundings, but there hasn’t been much surfing in the past six weeks or so anyway—the storm track bringing much needed and appreciated rains, but hardly any waves to speak of.

Those of us registered for the Rincon Classic watch the forecasts closely, starting each week thinking maybe this weekend, only to realize by mid-week that the comp won’t be on yet again. Of course, the surfer with the pressure on his shoulders is Rincon Classic Director Chris Keet of Surf Happens. But in his 19 years running the show, he has never not found the best weekend of the year on which to run the iconic event, even last year with the community still reeling from our rocked world of fire and debris flow. While the surf wasn’t all time (as it usually is), Keet used the contest as an opportunity to bring the whole Rincon crew together in healing and gratitude. The event is dedicated to the memory of Chris Brown this year. It’s still hard to understand that he is gone. All the area surfers and the fishing fleet out of Santa Barbara feel his absence. Peace be with you, Brownie.

So, it’s been an interesting few weeks in the shaping bay. A parent from one of the middle schools got in touch to ask if I could help her son make a surfboard for his class project. We sat down together to discuss the timeline, then set off on the journey that is shaping a surfboard.

The first stop, naturally, was Fiberglass Hawaii in Ventura, which, aside from carrying premium surfboard-building supplies, has the best staff imaginable—the only problem being that I get to talking story with either Cliff, Lester or Wade and I might as well belly-up to the bar I’m down there so long jawing. There are worse “problems” to have. I realize that these are the blessings of life: doing business with a well-run company that offers reliable service, and a knowledgeable, friendly staff. It’s not a little thing. To me and the other board builders around, it’s a very big thing indeed. So, my young charge and I picked up his blank and drove back up to Carpinteria on one of those mornings after a rain when the very air seems scrubbed clean. One could see the details of cliff faces out on Santa Cruz Island and the cove anchorages of Scorpion and Chinese. The hills must be bursting in green out there, and I hope Chuck

Of course, I suggested that the young fellow I was working with should consider a Twin Fin for the board we would make. He saw the logic of having a short, maneuverable surf craft and I gave him reading assignments to ground his upcoming work with some historic reference. He was to first read about Duke Kahanamoku, as it’s important to keep a touch of Hawaii in one’s surfing life— some aloha. I told him to find out about Bob Simmons and the planning hulls he designed from 1947 to ’52, since through various twists and turns Simmons’ concepts surface in the high-performance Twin. And, since we’re talking Twin Fins, I had him read up on Mark Richards, the four-time World Champion in the late 70s/early 80s who invented the modern Twin. Once back in the bay, we laid the outline down and studied it from 10 paces out, and even my young student could see that in shrinking the board down to 5’4” the tail ended-up being too wide.

So, we re-templated the board, finding the correct proportions the second time around. And this is the joy of hand shaping, cultivating one’s eye for symmetry and balance.

Over the course of five sessions, I brought the thickness down in the blank and explained to my student how each step worked into the next. If we were to pursue a true apprenticeship instead of a one-off project, I would have him begin to work with the planer, but I chose to have him use the hand planes and Sureform instead, giving him the opportunity to feel the nature of the blank and the cut

of tools but avoiding the potential for damage from power equipment. In the end, with a hand in most of the steps, my student helped craft his board, and he came up with a color scheme to make it more fully his own.

The next board I did was for a friend in the area who is in his late 20s and surfs with joy and precision. I’d made him a “mini-Simmons” keel fin board some time ago and he really enjoyed it, so we circled back to the concept. He’s riding finless quite a bit these days, letting his surfboard drift across the face of the wave, sliding through 360-degree loops.

We decided that the board might better meet his requirements if the toe-side rail ran a bit longer than the heel-side, so I cut a scythe-like shape in the tail, rounder on one side and more-square on the other. Four grooves (called “channels”) run through the tail block and two stabilizer fins will be optional additions. Also, the board needed to be quite thin, so he can really sink the rails and utilize them for control and propulsion in the absence of traditional fins. Again, this process demonstrates the utility of locally-based, custom-ordered, handshaped surfboards. Now we just need some surf!

March 6 – The Carpinteria High School swim team visited Malibu on a rainy Wednesday for their first Citrus Coast League meet of the season, falling short to the Sharks in the overall team score. “However, the Warriors continue to show growth and improvement, along with some great performance from multiple athletes,” said Warriors coach Sergio Castaneda. Senior Jessica Cruz performed in the 100-meter backstroke, coming in second overall. “Sophomore Cassidy Hajducko also braved the 100 butterfly and 200 IM, doing well in both events regardless of how difficult they are,” said the Warriors coach. The Warriors get a week of training before their next meet on March 20.

Baseball

March 8 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team took down Fillmore, 2-1 in a Citrus Coast League game. The Warriors trailed 1-0 going into the final inning when Anders Johnson scored off a double steal to tie the game. Then, freshman Hunter Garcia’s pop-up allowed Miles Souza to score the winning run. On the mound, Chase Mayer got the win for Carpinteria, throwing five innings and giving up one run on six hits. Souza came in to shut down the Flashes in the final two innings to secure the game. The Warriors improve to 4-1 overall, and 3-1 in the CCL. March 11 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team captured a second consecutive 2-1 Citrus Coast League (CCL) win, this time at the expense of the Malibu Sharks. Carpinteria needed 10 innings to dispatch the Sharks, and did so with a two-out, two-strike, bases loaded fly ball off the bat of senior leadoff man Chase Mayer. Senior centerfielder Noah Nuño led the Warrior attack as he collected three of Carpinteria’s five hits. Mayer started on the mound against Sharks hurler Ryan Redondo. But Miles Souza picked up the win in relief, throwing three scoreless frames on five ground balls, while striking out one, walking one and giving up one hit. Mayer threw seven innings, striking out nine, walking three and giving up three hits. The Warriors are now 5-1 overall and 4-1 in the CCL.

March 6 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team beat Foothill Tech in a non-league match, 15-3. Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson/Kirby Zapata went 3-0.

Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson/Carlos Costilla went 2-0 and did not drop a game.

Steve Poulos went 2-0 with Esteban Zapata, and then paired with Isaac Benitez to win the last set of the day 7-5, to complete his sweep. In singles, Austin Stone went 2-0 while Corban Pampel went 1-1 on the day. “This was a great overall match for us as we were able to try a few things plus get everyone in,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Carpinteria is now 6-1 overall and still 2-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

March 12 – The Carpinteria High School softball team dropped an 11-1 Citrus Coast League decision to Fillmore. Natalie Sanchez took the win for Fillmore.

Victoria Gonzalez took the loss for Carpinteria, going five innings, allowing nine runs on nine hits and striking out four. The Warriors had seven hits in the game. Isabel Studt and Eliana Gonzalez both managed multiple hits for Carpinteria, each registering two knocks. The Warriors are in league, 0-1, and overall, 2-3.

March 7 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team ended up in fourth place with a score of 496 in the second Citrus Coast League tournament at Soule Park in Ojai. Jacob Mata led the team with a 96 and Jacob Durtche scored a 98. Santa Paula won with a team score of 456, Malibu was second at 475 and Filmore third with a 487.

Sammy Mankoff of Malibu was the low scorer with an 85. With three league contests left the Warriors remain in fourth place out of six teams.

Track and Field

March 7 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team split their Citrus Coast League dual meet opener with the boys winning, 74-42, and the girls falling short against the Sharks, 70-63. Sophomore Vincent Rinaldi won the 100 meters, while junior Victor Rinaldi won the 400. The brothers teamed with Solomon NahooikaikaAnderson and Evan George to win the four x 400. Ytxzae Enriquez won the 1600 and 3200 events, and Isaac De Alba had a seasonal best of 44 feet and six-and-one quarter inches in the shotput. As for the girls, Shaylah Alvarez swept the long and triple jumps. Josie Gordon won the 100, while Kendra Meza won the 400. The girls meet came down to the final event of the day, the four x 400 relay with Malibu winning the relay to win the girls competition.

CHS Booster Club receives large donation from Jersey Mike’s

The Carpinteria High School Booster Club received a $2,700 donation from local sandwich shop Jersey Mike’s last Tuesday, March 5. The eatery debuted in Carpinteria in December. New franchisees Joe and Lisa Sutter generously opted to give a portion of their grand opening proceeds to the CHS Athletic Department. Athletic Director Pat Cooney and Booster Club Treasurer Kathleen Gordon were on hand at the Casitas Plaza location to accept the check. The money was raised during the 10-day grand opening celebration.

A man exhibited objective symptoms of being under the influence of a controlled substance and was found to be in possession of two Xanax bars. He was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

8:48 p.m. / drunk in public / 5000-block Carpinteria Ave.

Subject was found intoxicated in public and unable to care for himself. While attempting to take the subject into custody, he actively resisted. Records revealed the suspect also had an arrest warrant issued in Santa Barbara County.

Sunday, March 3

11:10 p.m. / welfare check/ 5000-block Carpinteria Ave.

Deputies were dispatched to check the welfare of a subject in the lobby of Motel 6. Upon arrival, deputies spoke with a man who was intoxicated to the point where he was unable to care for his own safety. The man’s room was checked, no one else was inside. He was arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Wednesday, March 6

9:30 a.m. / vehicle vandalism / 4000-block 9th St.

At approximately 8:09 a.m., the victim’s back car window was shattered with a large rock. Property management provided video surveillance that showed a white man wearing sunglasses pick up the large rock from the bed of his truck (grey Toyota Tundra) and drop it onto the victim’s back car window. The suspect’s truck has a trailer hitch, a decal sticker that looks like islands on the top right corner of the back window, and a small sticker on the bottom left corner of the back window.

1:28 p.m. / hit and run / Casitas Pass Road and Lillingston Canyon

Deputies responded to Casitas Pass to assist CHP with a vehicle crash and a suspect fleeing. A home owner believed the suspect was inside their home. Police dogs were brought to assist, and they cleared the residence. No suspect was located. CHP later informed deputies that the suspect was wanted in Ojai. One of the dogs located a scent and followed it to the west fence line of the property.

Deputies were informed that a shed on the property was locked from the inside and it should not be locked. Announcements were made, and the suspect fled out the back of the shed. A dog made the apprehension, and a male suspect was medically cleared. Stolen property was recovered. The Ventura Sheriff’s Office responded to the Carpinteria sub-station and took custody of the man.

8:44 p.m. / erratic driving / Hwy 101 at Bates Road

While returning from K-9 training, a deputy observed Ventura PD in a pursuit northbound on Hwy 101 approaching Bates Road. Ventura PD discontinued the pursuit and the deputy observed the

suspect vehicle driving erratically and almost colliding with other vehicles.

Although Ventura PD had discontinued the pursuit, based on public safety concerns, the deputy initiated a traffic enforcement stop and the pursuit started again. The driver almost collided with posts, the center divider, guardrail and on two separate occasions appeared to attempt to ram vehicles he was passing.

CHP would not take over the pursuit but assisted with setting out a spike strip at the north end of Goleta. The vehicle eventually lost its front driver-side tire and the driver yielded at Hwy 101 near Dos Pueblos Canyon. He was taken into custody after a short standoff where the driver threatened to blow up the truck with a propane tank and shotgun, threatened to kill the K-9 and used a small knife to make superficial wounds to his neck. The driver suffered dog bites, requiring seven to eight stitches on his right bicep/triceps area, and was taken to Cottage Hospital for a medical clearance. A mental health evaluation was requested, and the man was booked in Santa Barbara County Jail.

Thursday, March 7

3:55 p.m. / theft and fraud / 1400-block Azalea Drive

A man stated between the hours of 3 and 5 a.m. another man took his wallet which was left on a bench on his property.

Approximately $8,000 of charges and multiple miscellaneous accounts were opened with the man’s information. The reporting deputy gathered information on possible video footage of transactions at Tyler’s Donuts and 7/11 and stated that he would follow-up to gather further evidence.

12:31 a.m. / narcotics / HWY 101 and Bailard Avenue

A traffic stop for expired registration resulted in a female driver’s arrest for possession of narcotics for sale. The male passenger was arrested for carrying a concealed dirk or dagger. One ounce of meth, 10 grams of heroin, a digital scale and pay-owe sheet were among the items of evidence seized. Both suspects were booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

1:39 a.m. / false ID/ Cameo Road at Casitas Pass Road

A man was stopped for an equipment violation and then provided a false name in order to conceal a warrant for his arrest out of Burbank. It was also discovered that the man had several credit cards belonging to other people. He was arrested and booked into jail.

Saturday, March 9

8:55 a.m. / controlled substance / railroad tracks just west of Lookout Park, Summerland

Deputies contacted a man and a woman along the tracks. They had a camp that was next to the tracks and had trash everywhere. The woman displayed objective symptomology of being under the influence of a controlled substance and admitted to recently using meth and opiates. Both subjects were cited for narcotics violations.

Woman’s Club art contest returns to CUSD

After being postponed in 2018 due to the Thomas Fire and debris flows, the Carpinteria Woman’s Club is resuming its annual art contest for Carpinteria Unified School District students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. Competing for ribbons, certificates, prizes and cash, students will submit art work to their teachers by Wednesday, March 20, with an entry form affixed to the back of each piece of work. The Senior Merit Award winner will receive $100 from the Carpinteria Rotary Club.

4-H Club welcomes a lamb named “Hope”

members of the Playa Del Sur 4-h Club are preparing for the Santa Barbara Fair and expo to be held april 24-28. The group is particularly excited this year because they will be showing the first lamb that was born on the farm from their breeding project which provides members education in breeding, weaning, nutrition, vaccination and other aspects of animal husbandry. The baby lamb was born on Dec. 31 to a mother that was shown by alejandra Cruz and won Champion Breeder Lamb last year at Santa Barbara Fair and expo. The Playa Del Sur 4-h Club hopes to breed, raise and show their own lambs in the future. The lamb was named “hope” as a sign of a better year to come after last year when the club lost their whole farm in the January debris flow near Arroyo Paredon. Karla Marin will be raising and showing “Hope” this year. Marin has shown lambs for five years and is excited to show the club’s first bred lamb. “I think it will be a different experience and I’ll enjoy it,” said Marin. She and the other members of the club will be working hard with their steers, heifers and lambs in preparation for a busy spring and summer of shows. They plan on exhibiting their livestock at Santa Barbara Fair and expo, 4-h exhibit Day, Santa Barbara County Fair and other events.

The California Central Coast Society of asian americans (CCCSaa) held a dinner meeting at uncle Chen Restaurant in February. People living on the Central Coast of California who are of Asian descent—Northeast (China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau, Mongolia,); Southeast (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia, the Philippines, Christmas Island, Singapore); South (India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tamil); or the Pacific Islands (Melanesia, micronesia and Polynesia)—are invited to join the California Central Coast Society of Asian Americans. CCCSAA celebrates its members’ geographic origins with diverse cultures but strong ethnic ties with the vision for future asian americans to be better, more tolerant and globally oriented u.S. citizens, with the possibility of establishing a socio-cultural/historical center in the area.

Surf clubs gather to compete at the Queen of the Coast

The 2019 Rincon invitational surf contest came off on Saturday and Sunday, march 9 and 10 with barely rideable waves on Saturday, and an under-theradar swell that filled in for lucky competitors throughout Sunday afternoon. Regardless of conditions, surf clubs from as far away as Pacific Beach in San Diego, to the Black Surfers Collective in Los angeles, to the home-court-advantage-holding Rincon Surfing Association assembled teams for the event. unlike most surf contests in which surfers compete individually, the Rincon invitational is a team event with points given collectively for the maximum number of waves ridden in an hour of completion time. While the waves did not cooperate on Saturday, numerous surfers brought out extremely long boards to glide on the merest ripple of water in a time-honored tradition of surfers gathering from different geographic zones.

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY “My mother used to tell me and my brothers stories about when she was young, stories about our grandparents that didn’t seem possible. Those stories were like fairy tales to me then, but what I remember most now was her voice and the look in her eyes while telling them, and feeling like I was somehow part of something magical.”

While this quote is a bit of fiction penned by yours truly, the importance of passing down our unique histories is a universal truth. In 2015, Research Librarian Carmen Nigro compiled a list of 20-reasons why we should write our family history, and here are a few highlights with hopes of encouraging the beginnings of your written story.

Keep foremost in mind that “you are an important person. You have things to pass on, to your children, to your local history society, to unknown future generations.” Our own stories do not merely encompass our lifetime—they are an accumulation of the stories of the ancestors who came before us, and you are a very important link in that chain. Don’t let what you know of your parents, grandparents and even great-grandparents become a mystery to future generations.

Make their voices, trials and tribulations the foundation of your story by recording what you know.

This goes hand-in-hand with realizing that “first-person narratives and family histories are important historical documents and you are doing a service by leaving a legacy, no matter how small or large.” While the stories you’ve heard about your relatives throughout your life may seem irrelevant in the greater scheme of things, they may very well have an impact that you never considered. A client’s father, raised by an older sister in Georgia, left home in 1919 at the age of 17, made his way and his life in Santa Barbara, and lost touch with his family. A few years ago, I was contacted by a young woman through Ancestry.com, who believed my client’s father was her long-lost great-uncle. A few emails later, voila, reconciliation!

And since my client had his father’s story woven into the book he had made about his life, he can now share it all with family he never realized he had.

“There is a need for more family histories about families who are not affluent.” Take my word for it, there is little that is more interesting than unearthing, understanding and recording the lives of our immigrants. Those who came to farm, to build railroads, to mine, to stake their claim in a land where they could work, think for and better themselves are the reason we have the opportunities we enjoy today. While publishing your stories may not be your prime objective, you will find that libraries and genealogical societies have a keen interest in what your family has endured and overcome.

But let’s get back to you and your story.

How can writing your family history be helpful to you? For one, “it can be therapeutic.” As a Harvard Medical School article stated, “even if you write about parts of your life that you have never told anyone because they were unhappy or painful, revisiting them can show others the strength it takes to overcome life barriers when they face their own.” Who would you rather tell about these hardships, you or someone else who does not have your unique point-of-view?

There is a proverb that says when a person dies, a library burns to the ground.

Think of all that you know that no one else does and make a commitment to not take your library with you. Our stories are magical; they manifest as memories and cling to our bones. They are our voice, our inheritance, our great opus. All we need to begin is pen and paper.

Part of my story is my Irish blood, and with St. Patrick’s Day approaching I bestow upon you all the Irish hope that

you “may be kept safe until the word of your life is fully spoken.”
