Early Sunday morning, shortly before 2 a.m., Little Dom’s Seafood hostess Shae Lopez, 33, of Oxnard, was killed while driving home from work with her life partner of eight years, Dirky Cruz.

The couple was driving southbound on Highway 101 in Ventura when they collided with a car driving the wrong way on the freeway. The other driver, Javier Lopez, 23, of Camarillo, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

Fire crews extricated Cruz, 33, and transferred him to the hospital. He suffered severe injuries including multiple fractures to his legs and underwent two surgeries to stabilize him.

Shae Lopez worked as a hostess at Little Dom’s part-time with Cruz, while also working fulltime for the Ventura County Special Olympics.

“Shae and Dirky are some of the most kind, generous, authentic human beings I have ever met, the kind of people that

make the world a better place,” Corina Rivas said on the Gofundme page for the Cruz and Lopez families. “Shae was such a strong vivacious presence, the only thing bolder than her insanely live fashion style was her heart. I have been a first-hand witness to the capacity of love, compassion and empathy she had for those she loved and cared for… I know she lived her life from a place of love and understanding.”

Rivas encouraged community members to donate to help Cruz during his recovery, as well as to support Lopez’ family during this time of unexpected loss.

“Our hope is to lighten the burden during this tragedy for Dirky and Shae’s families and to allow space and time to begin the healing process,” Rivas said.

Cannabis grow approved along Arroyo Paredon Creek

The county planning commission approved 4-0 new changes and legalized existing structures for cannabis cultivation at 3508 Via Real, amid some concerns about the property’s proximity to Arroyo Paredon Creek.

Commissioner John Parke recused himself from the vote, citing a conflict of interest through his son.

The operation, owned by Ivan Van Wingerden, stretches across 9.68 acres.

It is located 200 feet from Highway 101 and 100 feet from Via Real, Gwen Beyeler, county planner, told the commission. The property itself contains two greenhouses for mixed-light cultivation, and an area for processing, packing and shipping; the project also includes new landscaping restoration of the area.

Under the approved modifications, the height of the greenhouses will be increased to 22 feet and almost an acre of development across the property will be demolished, due to outdated regulations. The structures on the property were originally constructed in the early 1970s and the early 1980s, Van Wingerden said during the meeting, explaining the need for some demolition and removal.

“Some of the infrastructure that was built decades ago will need to be removed to conform with today’s standards,” Van Wingerden said.

The grow will have 50 full-time employees working from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 6:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Beyeler told the commission.

Van Wingerden’s land-use consultant Phillip Greene discussed the property’s odor abatement plan which is similar to Van Wingerden’s other cannabis grows in Carpinteria Valley, with carbon filtration in the processing building, and the carbon scrubbers in the greenhouses. Small-scale testing of how the carbon scrubbers handle odor was completed in February 2021, Greene said, and full-scale testing is currently happening.

The commissioners questioned the need for barbed wire fencing along the property line, citing concerns about the wildlife in the area. Land-use consultant Jay Higgens said the fence is an “approved type for wildlife passage,” and that the barbed-wire fence is located on the bank, not in the creek itself.

“We do get people who will walk in the creek, and they need to know where the property line is, and that they’re not able to cross through easily,” he said.

The Van Wingerden cannabis grow is located 200 feet from Highway 101 and 100 feet from Via Real, planning staff told commissioners last week.

Public commenters were largely in favor of the property, including both Peter Dugre, executive director of CARP Growers, and Marc Chytilo, a lawyer for the Coalition for Responsible Cannabis.

“This particular grow is one of the more advanced (projects) that is relying exclusively on carbon scrubbers (…) to intercept and sequence odor-causing compounds in the facility so it does not cause impacts beyond its property lines,” Chytilo said. “The Coalition is before you today to offer its support for this project, because of all these commitments to ensure odor will not be a problem at this facility.”

However, commenter Maureen Claffey Foley, a leading member of Concerned Carpinterians and a representative of

the Save the Arroyo Paredon watershed, brought attention to local operations’ effects on the nearby creek.

“I am here to speak on behalf of the creek,” she said, inviting the commissioners to take a tour of the area with her.

“From our perspective, this creek is already considered an impaired waterbody.

That means it’s already got environment degradation, based on the historic greenhouse grows.”

She also alleged that the grow lied on its affidavits about how long it has been operating; Higgens clarified that, per the submitted affidavits, the operation began growing under non-conforming status in 2015 and began the application process in 2019.

Higgens also added that the grow

operations are “way more regulated than other traditional ag operations that are in line with this creek,” and Beyeler said there will be no development in the environmentally sensitive habitat area.

Commissioners praised the project overall, citing what they called an impressive effort on the Van Wingerden team’s part to help mitigate the cannabis smell in the area.

“This is a project that is taking huge strides,” Commissioner Larry Ferini said.

“They’re going to invest a lot of money in this to make these carbon scrubbers work, and I think this is the third facility under the Van Wingerden flag to do that. I see a huge commitment, and I can’t see why they would invest money into something that doesn’t work.”

Commissioner Laura Bridley called the group “a leader in the Carpinteria cannabis industry;” and Chair Michael Cooney also praised the operation for its dedication to smell mitigation. “(Carbon scrubbers) are expensive, and not everyone is willing to spend,” Cooney said. “Not all of the growers are willing to go the extra step in consideration of the neighbors of each of these projects.”

The commissioners have approved two other Van Wingerden family cannabis grows in recent months, one of which drew considerable criticism from the public over its proximity to Carpinteria High School.

Special Education Instructional Assistant Michele Dario told the board that until recently, she taught at Aliso Elementary School. While there, she filed a formal complaint about Gallardo with several others in November 2021, alleging unprofessional conduct. She said Gallardo was “openly demeaning” and “aggressively confronting” when she dealt with staff.

“At Aliso, we were encouraged to set ourselves on fire to keep our kids warm,” she said.

Union President Jay Hotchner separately confirmed at the meeting that a group of staff had filed a formal complaint about Gallardo’s behavior in November.

Parent Corey Adam told the board his son – a member of the same fifth grade class – was notified in front of his classmates that he would not be attending a fifth-grade trip due to misbehavior, with no prior notice to his parents.

“Since Ms. Gallardo has been hired, there has not been a progressive discipline model,” he said. “Eyewitness accounts from parent volunteers (about the child’s behavior) do not align with anything that has been shared with us

Aliso Elementary School Principal Veronica Gallardo has resigned effective March 18, the district superintendent announced Tuesday, after weeks of public outcry from parents over alleged dismissive and retaliatory behavior.

Parents for Aliso (PFA) – a parent group at Aliso Elementary – first publicly denounced Gallardo at an early February school board meeting, after an aide in a fifth-grade class allegedly dragged a student out of a classroom by his collar.

The student’s mother filed a police report.

The PFA told the board Gallardo did not properly respond to the incident, and cited other worries: alleged mask misuse, a lack of bilingual communication with Spanish-speaking families and a reported lack of transparency with parents. After Gallardo took over teaching that same fifth grade classroom, after a substitute left, the PFA demanded Gallardo not teach the class.

At Tuesday’s school district board of trustees meeting, Superintendent Diana Rigby called reports Gallardo dismissed parent complaints “not accurate” – the first public response from Rigby about the incident – and said that Gallardo had investigated the “choking” allegations per district procedures.

“The allegation that Veronica ‘dismissed’ a parent complaint against an employee is not accurate,” Rigby said.

She added there is “no evidence that a student was choked by an employee.”

Rigby also said that all Spanish-speaking families receive Spanish communication through Parent Square, and said Gallardo regularly spoke bilingually with Spanish-speaking parents at the school.

A second police report was filed two weeks ago against Gallardo herself by parent and PFA member Regina Ruiz.

Ruiz said Gallardo issued a perceived threat to her job over email, after Ruiz shared concerns about Gallardo’s behavior at a school board meeting.

Rigby told the public on Tuesday that allegations Gallardo retaliated against a parent had “no evidence”; she did not cite Ruiz by name.

“The retaliation allegation and police report also have no evidence,” Rigby said.

Several parents and a teacher spoke at Tuesday’s meeting, all of whom appeared surprised when Rigby announced Gallardo’s resignation.

Parent Sharon Egota called the recent outcry a “witch hunt against Ms. Gallardo.”

Frank Reed Webb passed into the arms of his Lord on March 6, 2022. He was born on April 10, 1941, in Glendale, California, to Jack and Becky Webb. He graduated from Glendale High School in 1959. After one year of fooling around at Glendale College, his parents decided he should do his two years of service in the Navy as part of a reserve program. He served on the USS Marshall and traveled the Pacific Ocean, making many interesting stops and learning many lessons. After he was discharged, he went back to Glendale College with a renewed commitment to his education and future. After graduation, he transferred to Los Angeles State University. He received his CPA certification after his apprenticeship at the Brentwood office of Arthur Young & Company. He later earned an Executive MBA at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

He married the love of his life, Carol Jennings, in 1965. They had three children: Michael, Wendy and Holly.

Frank’s chosen career was in cable television. He started at H&B American when cable television was basically an antenna service on top of a hill. Over the next 60 years, cable television became a very sophisticated business, and Frank was involved in starting businesses in California, New York, Alabama, Georgia, Missouri and Maryland. When cable television had spread across the United States, Frank was hired to help bring cable television to Hong Kong, Yorkshire, England, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Warsaw, Poland. His family was along for the ride and loved the excitement of the projects he was involved in and the adventure of living in interesting and diverse locations.

Upon his retirement, Frank and Carol returned to Southern California and after two years moved first to Summerland, California, and then to Carpinteria, California. They both spent more than 10 years at H&R Block working as tax preparers. They enjoyed working with coworkers who became friends, and with clients that they saw year after year.

Frank leaves behind a wife that thinks he hung the moon; his three children; his daughter-in-law, Irene; his five lovely grandchildren, Evelyn, Charlotte, Haley, Steven and Anderson; his brother Richard and sister-in-law Linda; as well as many loving friends.

His family believes his biggest gift to the lives of those who knew him was his sense of humor. He kept all of us laughing and we have chosen for his grave marker, “There will be more laughter in Heaven,” which we think is most appropriate. Rest in peace, Frank Reed, until we meet again.

A funeral will be held at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Santa Barbara at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, 2022. All are welcome to attend with a reception following at the family’s home.

White House opens second round of free at-home Covid tests Covid-19 death toll reaches six million worldwide

The Biden administration opened the second round of free at-home rapid Covid-19 tests on Monday, nearly two months after the first round was announced.

The tests are available at covidtest.gov through the U.S. Postal Service. Call (800) 232-0233 for help with ordering. Tests are limited to two per household, for a total of four tests.

“If you’ve already ordered free tests, you can now order another round, shipped directly to your home and for free, so we’re prepared no matter what Covid-19 brings,” President Joe Biden said in an address on Monday.

The number of known Covid-19 deaths worldwide reached 6 million on Monday, according to data from Johns Hopkins University, which has been closely tracking Covid-19 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

The county reported 435 new cases of Covid-19 last week, with 394 active cases between Feb. 25 and March 3 for a total of 64,608 reported Covid-19 cases.

That same week saw 46 hospitalizations, with seven in the ICU, and five new deaths.

One death was reported on March 1.

The individual was older than 70, had underlying medical conditions and lived in the unincorporated area of Goleta Valley.

Four deaths were reported on March 3; three individuals were in the 50-69 age group, while one was between 30-49. All four had underlying health conditions.

Cases have drastically dipped since the winter surge, with only one new Covid-19 case reported in the south county unincorporated area on Monday.

Two lived in Santa Barbara city, and two lived in Lompoc.

The largest number of cases that week were seen in the 30-49 age group, at 136, followed by the 18-29 age group with 104 cases. The county also reported a 3.6% test positivity rate, with a 8.01 per 100,000 case rate.

As of Monday, 67.8% of the county is fully vaccinated.

Cases have drastically dipped since the winter surge, with only one new Covid-19 case reported in the south county unincorporated area – containing Montecito, Summerland and the city of Carpinteria – on Monday. Seven new cases total were reported across the county on Monday.

Problems with new district map

Last Monday night, the Carpinteria City Council approved a new district map by a vote of 3 to 2 that will guide city council elections for the next 10 years.

There are problems with this map.

The map on the table splits both the Star Pine and Pacific Village neighborhoods. Drawing the map this way is in violation of one of the very important directives to mapping new districts: “local neighborhoods and communities of interest should be respected in a manner that minimizes its divisions and empowers its residents.” Map A-2 approved by the council does not respect the Star Pine and Pacific Village neighborhoods. Instead, it divides them in a very confusing way.

Another important directive and part of the criteria our city promises to use when drawing these maps is that “district boundaries will not be drawn with the interest of a specific council member in mind.”

I mentioned that the vote on map A-2 was 3 to 2. A decision of this magnitude should find each of the councilmembers working together toward a map that creates consensus, not one that creates winners and losers. Map A-2 can be tweaked to make the majority of Carpinterians happy and without splitting important neighborhoods.

Please contact your city council members and request they take action to make sure the map that is approved for our district elections is one that can achieve consensus. Time is of the essence, as the final vote will be on March 28.

The council is scheduled to vote on the final map on March 28. It is necessary that the council reconsider its selection before that date.

I urge you to contact your city council members immediately and request they reconsider the selection of map A-2 and make a final selection of a map that appropriately weighs the districting criteria and avoids splitting communities of interest. If they do so, I expect that a 5-0 council vote on the map selection would be the outcome, not the 3-2 split vote we saw last week.

Council maps present Not a dime for a problems On Feb. 28, the Carpinteria City senior center

Council made a preliminary selection of the map of the new city council district boundaries. Unfortunately, the map selected (by a split 3-2 vote) has serious problems and would set a bad precedent for Carpinteria.

The selected alternative A-2 map divides both the Star Pine and Pacific Village neighborhoods in apparently arbitrary ways. This is despite the fact that one of the most important criteria to be used in drawing district boundaries is to avoid dividing “communities of interest,” which includes neighborhoods such as these.

Why were the boundaries drawn this way? No clear reason was given at the city council meeting. However, it is interesting to note that the unnecessarily complex district boundaries on this map result in Councilmember Lee and Mayor Nomura being in separate districts, so they both would be able to run for office again. It is also interesting to note that the city’s guidelines for drawing districts include

it firsthand in the district’s current proposals to draw new district boundaries to protect the seats of incumbent board members, rather than to ensure greater racial diversity and representation on the board. What is “gerrymandering” and how does such a questionable practice of electoral manipulation affect democracy? Well, it’s a fascinating subject that schoolteachers sometimes talk about in their U.S. history, government or civics classes, but, as writing teachers often point out, “showing” is more effective than “telling.”

Here locally, we are so fortunate that our Carpinteria Unified School District not only has the opportunity to teach our students about the history of gerrymandering but also to let them experience

occasion, providing Americans, and the world with safety and security.

Regarding the economy, the American Rescue Plan provided relief when Covid-19 threatened businesses and workers. Workers were given additional employment benefits, and parents received a child tax credit of $250 per child.

Unfortunately, Congress has allowed the child tax credit to expire. It should be reinstated permanently.

The downside is that demand for goods outstripped supply due to supply chain problems. Consequently, inflation worries ensued. I’m confident the federal reserve will get this under control in the coming months.

Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine has demonstrated the importance of NATO. Biden was able to negotiate with our European partners and initiate a coordinated response. This simply could not have been accomplished by the former president. Biden has acted to preclude a conflict with a nuclear power. We have provided Ukraine with $1 billion in armament.

There are other issues that remain unsolved, such as immigration. The administration is taking a long-term approach in an effort to curb the influx at the southern border. This has been ongoing for decades and is not likely to be resolved quickly, particularly in light of the administration’s reasoned response solving the problem on a more permanent basis.

During Covid-19, the number of violent crimes and traffic fatalities have increased dramatically. Biden has provided additional Covid-19 funding to allow states and municipalities to directly address these problems. Clearly there is more to be done. I am thankful that Biden is president.

The women who made “my-story”

COFFEE, CAREER AND KIDDOS T E R E S A A LVA R E Z My abuelita, my mom and my French teacher… what could these three have in common? Well, aside from all being women, they all made a huge difference in my life!

My abuelita taught me that self-care is not selfish. She would wake up every Sunday morning and go to church by herself – no one was invited to come with her. That was her “me-time.”

She also taught me the importance of family. Everyone would gather at her house on Sundays and fill the space with laughter.

It brought her joy to feed her children and grandchildren and it has inspired me to do the same for our family here.

My mom taught me to love books. She would read to my sister and I every night in Spanish. She is the reason why I’m bilingual. She made sure we knew how to read, write and speak fluent Spanish, and I’m so glad she did. She taught me to embrace my culture by teaching us traditions from her childhood in Mexico.

My mom is also the most loving, caring and thoughtful mom.

My French teacher was my first mentor.

She taught me leadership by encouraging me to run for president of the French Club and she was also the reason why I was able to visit Europe in my teens. She convinced my dad to let me travel with the club to France the summer of senior year, and when he said it was a financial burden for our family, she pitched in her own money so I could go. Madame also gave me my first paid job. She trusted me to babysit her two children when she needed some extra support or a date night, which I now know are so important.

March is Women’s History Month and it led me to reflect on the ways that so many women have impacted my life. My abuelita, my mom and my French teacher weren’t the only women who helped me become the woman I am today. I’ve been lucky to have a group of wonderful women around me who have helped me grow personally, professionally and now as a mom.

In Carpinteria, there are some wonderful women I am proud to call mentors and friends and who are helping shape the future of our next generation of leaders. Jamie Collins, executive director of Girls Inc., and her team are empowering women to be strong, smart and bold.

City Councilmamber Natalia Alarcon is paving the way for Latina leaders in politics. Marybeth Carty, executive director of the Natalie Orfalea Foundation, is a selfless leader who is always willing to go above and beyond and help the community. I’m also very lucky to work with amazing, strong and smart women who care for young children, families and the community.

Teresa was born in Guanajuato, Mexico, and moved to the U.S. with her parents at age two. Teresa holds a bachelor›s degree in Sociology from UCSB and a master›s degree in Psychology from Antioch Santa Barbara.

Carpinteria Planning Commission has approved an addition to a residence in the beach area, designated as “Zone 2,” which may be affected by sea level rising and floods over the next decades.

Planners approve two-story addition despite pushback

The Carpinteria Planning Commission voted 3-1 to approve a two-story residential addition located in the beach neighborhood on the south side of Fourth Street, despite some concerns from Commissioner John Callender that the project may present an “existential” crossroads for the city.

Callendar ’s issue surrounded the ecological aspects of the project and that it falls just below threshold that would have required additional studies and mitigation measures; the interim guidelines require that the project cost be less than 50% of the market value, and the projected cost is at 48%. The residence is located in the beach area designated as “Zone 2,” the second most vulnerable zone that may be affected by sea level rising and floods in the next 80 years.

Since the projected cost was so close to the threshold that would trigger additional ecological studies, Callender suggested the commission take that into account, since it would be their only opportunity to bring up the issue. Once the project was approved, even if the cost went up over 50% of the market value, the city could not retroactively call for the studies and mitigation measures.

“Aside from this one concern, I’m a fan of this project,” Callender said, “but this one concern I think rises to the level of a real existential threat to the future of Carpinteria as a coastal beach town.”

The interim guidelines remain in place

while the city revises its general plan, and commissioner David Allen suggested that they use those advisory meetings to figure out which guidelines would best protect the city going forward. But for now, Allen said, the 50% threshold is where the guideline sits, and their decision should follow those lines.

“That’s what the threshold is at,” Allen said. “I feel it’s appropriate to go forward with the motion for approval.”

Chair Jane Benefield recused herself from the hearing because the project location is less than 500 feet from her home.

All other commissioners voted in favor of the project, which moved forward with only Callender opposed.

With the approval, the project designer Russel Werth can now proceed with the development plan and coastal development permits, pending approval at the Architectural Review Board. The board reviewed the project last December, and it received general support with a few comments, suggesting a white picket fence in place of the existing hedges and offering advice on windows and shutters for the second-story addition. Final review by the board is required before the project receives permits.

The proposed 535-square-foot addition to the residence would include a new bedroom and master suite, and the project would also remodel the kitchen and tear down the existing laundry room. The single-family residence, which was built in 1937, would be 1,403 square feet when finished.

Grassroots arts group launches Latinx history mural project

The Latino Arts Project Carpinteria/ Artes de Proyecto Latinx Carpinteria has announced plans for a public arts project that will depict Carpinteria’s unique Latinx history in a series of murals.

The grassroots organization, led by community activist Leslie Westbrook and Suzanne Requejo, founder of Artesania para la Familia, will implement three murals on the subject of Latinx local history, particularly at Carpinteria schools.

The first proposed mural, “Past/Pasado,” will be a visual presentation of the “Mexican only” Aliso Elementary School (grades 1-8) that existed for 27 years (1920-1947), along with Carpinteria’s segregated movie theater and beach of the same period.

“The children were segregated to try and create a pipeline into the lemon picking industry in Carpinteria,” Westbrook added. ”Present/Present,” the second proposed mural, will portray ongoing fears of undocumented community members and DACA students while also celebrating Latinx contributions to Carpinteria, such as fiestas and Day of the Dead celebrations.

Finally, “Future/Futuro,” the third proposed mural, will depict hopes for the future. “It will be a brighter, more integrated rainbow of townsfolk that includes people of Mexican descent along with other ethnicities, cultural identities and nationalities, living together peacefully and happily,” Westbrook said.

As part of the project, organizers are recording videos of oral histories told by surviving Mexican and Mexican American community members who attended Aliso School during the “Mexican only” phase. Via Real closed for drainage system repairs until April

The section of Via Real damaged by the arson last month will be closed until April, according to Kirsten Ayars of the Highway 101: Carpinteria to Santa Barbara project.

Work began on the Via Real drainage system on Monday, sections of which will need to be replaced. Via Real closed to all vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists on Monday, with an anticipated opening date of April 8.

“During construction, crews will dig a 16’ trench to install new concrete pipes and reline pipes under Highway 101.

Streetlights near the trench will be turned off and dismantled during work. The bike path along the opposite side of Carpinteria Creek will remain open with lighting,” Ayars said.

A detour is available on through Bailard Avenue, and then to Carpinteria Avenue.

A 24-year-old Carpinteria resident, Santiago Garcia-Soriano, was arrested last month for the Via Real culvert fire. The fire was set on Feb. 19 in the storm drain system, and Garcia-Soriano later admitted to deputies he started the fire. As of Monday, he is still in custody on a $100,000 bail.

Road and ramp closures continue on the Highway 101 construction project.

On the northbound side, one lane between Sheffield Drive and Bailard Avenue, as well as the off-ramps at Linden Avenue and North Padaro Lane, are closed between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. on Sunday nights. Those same areas are closed Monday through Thursday nights between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.

The on-ramp at Sheffield Drive remains closed, with a scheduled reopening of July 13.

On the southbound side, one lane between Sheffield Drive and Bailard Avenue will be closed Sunday nights between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. The on- and off-ramps at North Padaro Lane, South Padaro Lane, Santa Claus Lane, Carpinteria Avenue, Linden Avenue, Reynolds Avenue and Bailard Avenue will also be

County projects $6M cannabis revenue shortfall for 2021-22

Because of a glut of marijuana on the market, the county’s tax revenue from cannabis cultivation is projected to be only $12.4 million this fiscal year, or $6 million less than the $18.4 million that was forecast last June when the county budget was adopted, the County Executive Officer said this week.

During the 2020-21 fiscal year ending last June, the county collected $15.7 million in taxes from cannabis cultivation. The projected decrease for 2021-22 “is attributable to the oversupply of wholesale cannabis product and resulting price compression that continues to persist locally and statewide, much as it did early on in other states that legalized adult-use cannabis prior to California, such as Colorado and Oregon,” according to the quarterly budget status report that was presented by the office of CEO Mona Miyasato to the county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday.

The CEO’s budget projection was based on cannabis tax receipts for October, November and December 2021, the second quarter of the current fiscal year.

(This fiscal year runs from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022.) The quarterly report was on the board’s administrative agenda and was not subject to a public hearing, signaling a change from recent years, in which the supervisors held quarterly public hearings on the status of cannabis revenues, permits and licensing.

Using the state’s “Track-and-Trace” system, which provides data and analytics for all licensed operators, the county will be able to make more accurate projections regarding cannabis tax revenue in the future, the report said.

In all, it said, the county’s cannabis tax revenues for 2021-22, including both cultivation and retail, are projected to be $6.6 million less than what was anticipated last June. None of the six storefronts where marijuana can be sold

But the county is projecting a $2.7 million boost in property transfer taxes over what was forecast when the 2021-22 budget was adopted, driven by historically low mortgage rates and the high demand for homes. Bed taxes that are assessed for hotel and motel rooms are trending $2.6 million higher than budgeted because of the public’s pent-up demand for travel; and the county is projecting a year-end surplus of $2 million in sales taxes over what was forecast last June, reflecting the sustained growth of e-commerce and an uptick in holiday shopping.

Locals with Ukrainian ties respond to Russian invasion of Ukraine

Nadia Lyhitchenko Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, in the bosom of a large Ukrainian community, Carpinteria resident Nadia Lyhitchenko grew up speaking Ukrainian, dancing folkloric dances and attending churches, camps and schools with other Ukrainian families. At the time, the Ukrainian community was highly organized in Toronto, she said, and worked to ensure that the culture and ideals of “the Motherland” were passed on.

“That generation of Nationalists were under the impression that with time we were a dying nation,” Lyhitchenko said.

“That if we didn’t keep that culture alive in another nation than we’d be extinct…

The love of the Motherland is inherent in our DNA.” Both of Lyhitchenko’s parents were born in Ukraine and escaped in the 1940s during the Soviet Union’s totalitarian regime. Her parents survived Stalinist purges and the Nazi regime before becoming refugees in Canada.

Much of the Ukranian diaspora was Nationalistic even prior to leaving the country. Lyhitchenko noted that for decades under the Soviet Union, the Ukraine had their language and cultural practices suppressed or banned. “But Nationalists like my dad went underground,” she said. “They continued their traditions always.”

For Lyhitchenko, the tight-knit Ukrainian community led to a deep sense of political identity, saying she is Ukranian Canadian, and now Ukranian American – “but always Ukranian first.”

With many family members living near Kyiv, the country’s capital of 2.8 million people before the war, Lyhitchenko said she was worried. She noted she had family members fighting and others hiding in bomb shelters. One of her cousins, a man in his 30s, was drafted to fight after the

invasion of Crimea in 2014 and trained as a paratrooper. He had previously been released from the army but re-enlisted after Russia’s recent invasion.

“I have a little piece of mind because he is a well-trained soldier, he’s not like a computer analyst who has never held a gun in his life,” Lyhitchenko said, referencing the scores of civilians who have enlisted in the army with no prior military background.

The war and devastation to Ukraine’s cities comes at a time when many thought the country was entering an era of economic and political stability. Having left the Soviet Union in 1991 when the Ukraine declared its independence, the past 30 years have seen struggles with corruption and oligarchs, economic downturn and the establishment of a new government and constitution.

“It was just on the brink of seeing a glimmer of prosperity,” Lyhitchenko said. “I was hearing this from friends in the Ukraine, the ordinary Ukrainian was feeling it. And then Putin came in and destroyed all the hard work.”

Last Sunday, Lyhitchenko helped organize a workshop for community members on the humanitarian crisis at the Carpinteria Woman’s Club. With the help of all three of the Rotary Clubs of Carpinteria and the Woman’s Club, Lyhitchenko was able to talk about her country and its people, encouraging participants to donate in support.

Representatives of the global aide nonprofit, Shelterbox, demonstrated setting up the tents they provide and discussed other emergency provisions. Lyhitchenko recommended donating to the organization at shelterboxusa.org as they deliver lifesaving aid to families affected by the crisis in Ukraine.

“There was an outpouring of sympathy and support,” Lyhitchenko said. “I’ve felt this angst of hopelessness against this tragedy but by doing something proactive instead of just reading the news, I felt like I was helping in some way my homeland.”

Carpinteria Family Baptist Church senior pastor Sergiy Tarasenko and his wife, Maryna, were both born and raised in Kyiv, having met as students their freshman year at the International Christian University. Both were born in the Soviet Union, which collapsed when they were teenagers.

The couple moved to the U.S. in 2007 with their children Sergiy and Alexander on the invitation of the First Ukrainian Evangelical Baptist Church of Santa Barbara that sought a pastor who spoke Russian, English and Ukrainian. After two years in Santa Barbara, Tarasenko accepted a transfer to First Baptist Church in Carpinteria, now called Family Baptist Church.

Carpinteria’s ministry was small at the time, with membership down to a few dozen and no children. Throughout the past decade, Tarasenko, who is now Family Baptist’s senior pastor, worked to grow the church’s parish to be what he called: “a bright vibrant living church with families, children and even a preschool program.”

Tarasenko said his and Maryna’s parents were well-educated with advanced degrees but worked local jobs and made very little money.

“But we never felt poor because everybody was in the same boat,” he said.

As adults themselves, Tarasenko said they were doing well economically in the Ukraine before moving to the U.S., but he wanted to be a scholar or teacher, and came to accept his calling to be a pastor.

Recently, under his wing, Family Baptist had partnered in the start of a new church in Kyiv, in the same area where Tarasenko had lived. Now, that project is uncertain as the metropolitan areas in the country have been the hardest hit by Russian attacks.

In daily contact with his family in the Ukraine, Tarasenko said everybody has their own story. He first learned of the attacks from his mother on the first day after one of the first bombs, which he

Tarasenko said he receives the same message from his family members everyday: “They cannot leave, and they cannot stay. That is the message we get from everybody, every single day. They are scared that they will be killed as the Russian army continues its attacks.”

County opens door to additional cannabis processing But stiffer odor control regulations are coming in the North County, supervisors say

BY MELINDA BURNS The county Board of Supervisors last week expanded the burgeoning cannabis industry in the North County and Carpinteria Valley, removing processing buildings from the acreage caps on cultivation – a change that some residents viewed as a broken promise.

The new rule was part of a final 4-1 vote last Tuesday, with Chair Joan Hartmann opposed, on several amendments to the county’s cannabis business license.

Also on Tuesday, the board unanimously approved a 25,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art processing building at Glass House Farms, where eight acres of cannabis are under cultivation at 3561 Foothill Road in the Carpinteria Valley.

Processing is the smelliest stage of cannabis operations, but the building proposed by Graham Farrar, Glass House president, is designed to be airtight and equipped with 19 carbon filters to “scrub” out the “skunky” smell of cannabis. The building will maintain negative pressure; that is, whenever a door is opened, the air will flow in so that odors can’t flow out.

“This is a historic day,” said Supervisor Gregg Hart, who represents the Goleta Valley. He praised Farrar’s plan as “a significant achievement, something to celebrate.”

“The bar is moving and is getting higher,” Hart said. “…This project will improve the environment in the neighborhood and make things better.”

Presently, cannabis cultivation, including processing, is set at 1,575 acres outdoors in North County and 186 acres in greenhouses in Carpinteria Valley.

Removing processing from the caps – about three acres in the North County and nine acres in Carpinteria Valley – would encourage the construction of cannabis processing buildings, including “standalone” buildings on properties with no cultivation, boosting county tax revenues, the board said. It would also free up 12 more acres for cultivation under the caps.

“I believe we can eliminate the barrier that is in place that keeps processing from happening, in a technologically sophisticated way that doesn’t impact neighborhoods,” Hart said. “I see this as a win-win… If we don’t start to open the door to processing, we won’t get there. I don’t think we’re going to find ourselves with a rush of applications. Things will line up.”

Stricter permits?

The change in the caps was requested by cannabis growers, many of whom said they had dropped their plans for processing in the race to obtain zoning permits before the acreage limits were reached.

Growers who missed qualifying for the North County cultivation cap also said they would welcome the chance to develop stand-alone processing buildings.

But Nancy Emerson, a member of Santa Ynez Valley conservationist group WE Watch, one of several citizens’ organizations opposed to the new rules, said the county had not properly reviewed the amendment promoting cannabis processing. Residents had been assured that the board would not change the caps, she claimed, yet “most of you intend to break that promise.”

“There is no regulation of the total number allowed of these processing facilities, their size, location or odor control,” Emerson said. “…What worries us is that you are leaping into these changes with no careful considerations of the consequences for residents and existing agriculture.”

Santa Barbara Coalition for Responsible Cannabis, two groups that have sought stricter regulations for the industry.

Anna Carrillo, a member of Concerned Carpinterians, a group of 300 people, said Tuesday that as many as 25 grows in the Carpinteria Valley were already processing or had recently received permits to begin processing.

“Carpinteria should be excluded from the business license change,” Carrillo said.

To allay residents’ concerns, the supervisors said that this summer they would consider requiring more restrictive zoning permits, called conditional use permits, primarily for future North County cannabis operations. These permits would require growers to show that their projects are “compatible with the surrounding area” and “not detrimental to the comfort, convenience, general welfare, health, and safety of the neighborhood. (Farrar’s project required a conditional use permit.)

“I think we’re going to have the benefit of the CUP permit for processing inland,” Nelson said. “Hopefully, that gives us the tools to address these real concerns and neighborhood compatibility issues.”

But Hartmann was not convinced, having repeatedly failed in the past to persuade her colleagues to require conditional use permits for commercial cannabis. On Tuesday, she said she feared the measure still might not win majority board support. During the last fall harvest, the city of Buellton, which is downwind from several “grows,” was plagued for months by the stench of pot.

“We already know from bitter experience that it’s very difficult to know where the odor is coming from,” Hartmann said.

Glass House appeal

On Tuesday, Farrar told the board that a new processing building at his Foothill property would allow him to move

drying, trimming and curing operations out of an old flower pack house at 5601 Casitas Pass Road, a second property where he is growing cannabis in greenhouses. He said he would no longer have to truck a third of his plants to Lompoc for processing, an hour away.

“It is unlike anything else we’ve seen in Carpinteria,” Farrar said of his proposed building. “Most of the existing processing facilities are old legacy packing houses that have been retrofitted. This is an airtight, sealed, building-within-a-building.

The entire design is for odor abatement.

The odors can never build up. This is really what processing should look like.”

But 100 members of Concerned Carpinterians, a citizens’ group that has sought stiffer regulation of the cannabis industry, signed a petition against Farrar’s processing project last year. Since 2019, residents have filed more than 250 complaints with the county regarding the “skunky” smell of pot in the vicinity of Glass House greenhouses on Foothill.

Farrar’s processing building was before the board on appeal from the county Planning Commission’s approval. Sarah Trigueiro, a resident of La Mirada Drive above Foothill, filed the appeal; she urged the board not to approve an expansion of what she said was “an existing nuisance with a poor operator track record.”

Trigueiro said that residents of La Mirada Drive, Padaro Lane, the Polo condos and homes on Foothill “are regularly subjected to noxious cannabis fumes that put our health at risk.”

In response, Supervisor Das Williams, who represents the Carpinteria Valley and was a chief architect of the county’s permissive cannabis ordinance, sought to address what he called “a false narrative about what is happening in our town.”

Concerned Carpinterians has long advocated for cannabis operations to be conducted in sealed buildings equipped with carbon “scrubbers,” Williams said,

and Farrar’s new processing building would do just that.

“What’s very strange is that there’s no joy even in victory, right?” Williams said.

The county, he said, “has acted time and time again to incrementally improve the situation,” banning outdoor cultivation in the valley, shutting down “bad actors” and suing a grower near Farrar’s Foothill operation.

Williams noted, too, that CARP Growers, an industry group that Farrar belongs to, has pledged to install “best available control technologies” to reduce the smell of pot from their open-vented greenhouses.

Williams, who lives in Carpinteria, said he has rarely smelled cannabis, while just two blocks away lives “one of the folks who writes in regularly about how the odor is unlivable at her house.” It is the same in the La Mirada neighborhood, Williams said, “undoubtedly a hot spot of concern and, probably, legitimately so”; some areas, he said, “don’t get the odor.”

“For most Carpinterians, this problem has gotten vastly better, largely due to the efforts both of growers, and of staff, and folks who are concerned about marijuana and are willing to make odor complaints,” Williams said.

Supervisor Steve Lavagnino, who represents the Santa Maria Valley, said he did not share Williams’ frustration, but noted that only a handful of speakers weighed in on Tuesday against Farrar’s project, compared to the packed hearing rooms of the past. Lavagnino said the board had to weigh residents’ complaints against the tax revenues that the industry provides for county services.

“I feel for folks that are more impacted than others,” he said, “but it is a balancing game.”

Supervisor Bob Nelson, who represents Orcutt and a portion of the wine country west of Buellton, said he had grown up with the pungent smell of sugar beets. Other crops smell too, he said.

“I don’t think we’re ever not going to smell cannabis in this county,” Nelson said. “… But I do want to eliminate the concentration where it becomes noxious, getting to a place where people can’t enjoy where they live. That is a problem and the attack on this project is a proxy war on this issue.”

Saving curlews

IN THE NATUREHOOD NANCY BARON Each time I walk our beaches in the winter, I look for long-billed curlews, a big shorebird with a curved bill as long as their body. These cinnamon-colored birds search the water’s edge for food during the winter months. Standing 18 to 26 inches with a three-foot wingspan, curlews are North America’s biggest shorebird.

I love to watch them and see what they find. Shorebirds have sensitive bills with sensory organs and thousands of nerve endings. As they probe the wet sand, they can detect if something is buried and whether what they hit is edible.

Peering through my binoculars I see the curlew withdraw a wriggling beach crab, whack it against the sand, toss it down the hatch, then continue walking the waterline.

Curlews literally live on the margins.

If they survive breeding, curlews arrive on our coast exhausted and out of fuel. They must find food while the tide is low enough to expose wet sand that hides crabs, shrimp and other invertebrates.

When you walk our Carpinteria beaches you will see a few long-billed curlews, trying to feed while dodging dogs, bikes and walkers. But if you want to see them in the hundreds or even thousands, Morro Bay is the place to go. There they are protected, and they seem to know it.

On a recent trip to Morro Bay Strand State Beach my husband Ken and I walked the short trail to the beach and found ourselves surrounded.

Several hundred long-billed curlews walked the shoreline, pushed up by the rising tide and preoccupied with probing the wet sand with their 8-inchlong beaks.

I was astonished at how the curlews ignored the other beach walkers, runners, and surfers. I counted 144 more curlews snoozing in the sand dunes.

Beachgoers passed through the throng of birds. But rather than flying down the beach, they continued feeding. Here, the curlews have learned, people won’t bother them. And on this state beach, dogs aren’t allowed.

A woman sat on a stool, surrounded by curlews. She was a volunteer searching for one particular Long-billed Curlew called Dozer, named for his propensity for napping.

Dozer wears a little backpack satellite transmitter with an antenna like a long whisker. Researchers have learned a lot about the curlews with the help of this technology and many volunteers in Morro Bay are watching for Dozer and reporting their sightings.

I reached out to Heather Hayes, the researcher who banded Dozer. Hayes, a biologist and community science coordinator for the Intermountain Bird Observatory (IBO) at Boise State University said they began studying the declining curlew population in 2009 on the public lands of southwest Idaho, which historically had the densest breeding populations in North America.

Curlew chicks are extremely vulnerable and rely on their camouflage.

Idaho, then his mate Mimi in 2021. For the past two winters, Dozer has flown through Idaho, Oregon, and Nevada to overwinter in Morro Bay while Mimi heads to the Gulf of Mexico about 450 miles further south.

Migration is getting harder with fewer places to rest. Drought makes desiccated ground hard to probe to reach earthworms and bugs. Habitat is ever shrinking due to expanding agriculture and increased development.

Once the birds make it to their breeding grounds, they remain vulnerable.

Unethical shooters called “plinkers” drive around the public lands blasting anything including curlews that explode off the nest if the roaring ATV’s get too close. Hayes shared photos of a pair of curlews wearing backpack transmitters that had been shot, leaving their four nestlings to perish.

“They can’t sustain these kinds of losses,” she said. Curlews were known to live 20 years, but not anymore.

For plinkers, she said, “everything can become a moving target – not only curlews, but hawks, owls and eagles.”

On a map of the public lands known as the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area, someone has dropped a google pin that says,

“shooting spot” where four curlews were found illegally shot.

Heather is working with school kids and the recreating public to try to change attitudes.

“The plinkers are a hard nut to crack,” she says. But Hayes is resolutely positive. Researchers, volunteers and an increasingly aware public are doing everything they can to ensure their survival.

Any day now Dozer will leave to journey 700 miles back to his nesting area and wait for Mimi. Once she arrives, they will hunker down for a month.

Mimi will sit on the nest all day and Dozer will keep the eggs warm all night, with a quick stealthy exchange at dawn and dusk.

Being a curlew is a dangerous business. Hayes stressed that everything we do to help counts. Here in Carpinteria, we can’t do much about the plinkers, but on beach walks we can give the feeding birds enough space, so we don’t waste their energy flying up and down the beach. And if your dog chases birds, then perhaps a leash on the beach might help save these shorebirds before they are gone. In some places, curlew populations have dropped 99% in the past four decades. Each little thing can help increase their odds.

CMS class tackles weather instruments

At Carpinteria Middle School, science teacher Lindsey Agnew’s class tackled and built their own DIY weather instruments.

In the lab, the sixth grade students used supplies to build four types of weather instruments: a wind vane to measure wind direction, a barometer to measure air pressure, an anemometer to measure wind speed and a rain gauge to measure rainfall.

“They tested out their devices after constructing them and recorded their measurements,” Agnew said.

AHA! to hold mid-year conference this weekend

AHA!’s mid-year conference will focus on approaching injustice with grace, the organization AHA!, a teen-focused organization, will hold its mid-year conference on March 12 at the Community Arts Workshop, at 631 Garden Street in Santa Barbara. High school students are welcome from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; junior high students are scheduled between noon and 3 p.m.

Students will focus on approaching injustice with grace, helping to build confidence and address unfair behavior in the world, according to a description of the event. Pizza lunch is provided, and community service hours are given for attending.

Postal worker hangs up satchel after long career

Since the late 1980s, postal worker Amelio Gutierrez has carried the mail to Carpinterians. He spent over a decade bringing the daily mail along Route 3 before taking over Route 6, where he spent over two decades. Gutierrez retired from Carpinteria Post Office at the end of February.

Gutierrez had planned to retire in three years when he turned 65 but decided to end his long career early to help take care of his family, including his adult daughter, who was recently diagnosed with ALS. “It was family stuff,” he said. “I was going to retire in a few years anyway but my daughter – and some people on my route already know and some of my coworkers know – but my daugh-

ter has ALS. So, I wanted to spend more time with her.”

During his time on Carpinteria’s mail routes, Gutierrez said he loved seeing the same people and watching children grow up and have children of their own. He enjoyed just saying ‘hi’ to people or running into a customer at the grocery store or hair salon.

Gutierrez has six children and five grandchildren. He said he’s looking forward to spending more time with them, especially his grandchildren.

Three of his grandchildren are nearby so he’ll be able to take them to the park on afternoons regularly now. His other two grandkids live in Santa Rosa and now he’ll have more time to drive up and see them, he said.

“And I want to fix up my trailer and go camping and go fishing and try and enjoy it as much as I can,” he added.

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria was awarded a $50,000 grant from the Cottage Hospital Foundation, the organization announced.

The grant supports the organization’s STRONG curriculum and will be used to expand the program. STRONG encourages Girls Inc. of Carpinteria members to engage in healthy living, combining physical activity and nutrition.

“Our programs are designed to help girls and their families enhance their ability to handle stress, manage emotions, and tackle everyday challenges – many of which are exacerbated by the ongoing pandemic – while providing a safe and supportive environment,” said Jamie Collins, executive director of Girls Inc. Carpinteria.

“This funding will enable us to expand our programming that promotes overall health awareness through physical activity, nutrition, and nature, and we are grateful to Cottage Hospital Foundation for recognizing this important need and investing in the well-being of our local girls.”

The STRONG program was launched in 2021, courtesy of a grant from the Audacious Foundation.

Jeff Wilson, assistant director of county Planning & Development, told the board that the county has not been able to pinpoint Farrar’s operations as the source of residents’ odor complaints; other cannabis greenhouses are operating close by and there’s no way to determine who’s responsible, he said. As a result, Wilson said, no odor violations have been found at Farrar’s operations on Foothill Road, even though, he said, “We’re still getting calls, if not daily, about this site.”

“Staff has responded to numerous complaints,” Wilson said, “but we have not been able to verify that this site solely is the source of any odors.”

Chair Hartmann, who represents much of the wine country west of Buellton, called this a “Catch-22.” The county, she said, “instituted regulations on odor beyond our ability to enforce. ”Normally, Hartmann said, applicants with zoning violations cannot be approved for another permit until they address those violations. In Farrar’s case, she said, “because we can’t show where the odor is coming from, we find ourselves in this difficult position.”

Hartmann said she supported Farrar’s high-tech processing building. But, she said, the smell of cannabis that is causing

health problems for residents and driving them to their wit’s end is “unacceptable” in both the North County and Carpinteria Valley and cannot not be ignored.

“There are people who are very sensitive to the odor of cannabis,” Hartmann said. “We’re up here dismissing them, and that is something I can’t let go unremarked.”

Williams responded that no one on the board was dismissing people who are sensitive to the smell of marijuana; but, he said, “it is just incorrect to validate the departure from reality in rhetoric that has become all too common in our society right now.”

In an interview after the hearing, Trigueiro said she would appeal the board’s decision to the state Coastal Commission this month.

“Das Williams,” she said, “seems to have made a strategic choice not to believe his constituents, while voting for more cannabis processing and density that will worsen our quality of life.”

David Farebrother is latest Rotary speaker

David Farebrother, author of “Alta California 1769,” was the rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning’s latest speaker.

Farebrother spoke of Gaspar de Portola’s Spanish military expedition, which marched from San Diego to Monterey. The expedition was commissioned by the king of Spain, Farebrother said, to explore the area and return with goods for Spain.

“Farebrother discussed the origins of Carpinteria, noting that Portola was the explorer that first noted this coastal area looking like a carpenter’s shop after seeing the shores lined with Chumash tomols, tar and tools and named the town Carpinteria,” Club member Shelby Donald said.

The club also recently awarded Rotary essay winner Allison Liliburn with $300 and a certificate of excellence, and honored community member Mario Valtierra for exceptional customer service. Valtierra has worked at Albertsons grocery for 31 years, and “always has a smile on his face,” Donald said.

Rotary presents 13th annual talent showcase

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria will hold its 13th annual talent show on April 9 at the Alcazar Theatre.

Proceeds from the show go toward purchasing instruments, sheet music, tuners and other items for children at the Carpinteria Unified School District.

“With the generosity of our sponsors and in collaboration with the Alcazar Theatre, we can provide an annual variety talent show and with your help our local youth programs will grow,” Rotarian Cheryl Wright said.

RANDY GRAHAM Lentils are low in calories, high in fiber, high in protein and have zero trans fats.

This basic lentil recipe is simple and easy to prepare. Just put all the ingredients into a slow cooker and the chow down four hours later. The vegetarian sausage adds depth and texture for a hearty stew.

It’s especially good on a cool night.

Ingredients:

1½ cups lentils (black lentils are good but any lentils will do) 1 package Lightlife Smart Sausages Italian Style (cut into ½-inch pieces) 2 cups sweet corn kernels 3 stalks celery (thinly sliced) 3 carrots (cut into one-inch pieces) 1 medium onion (chopped) 15-ounce can diced tomatoes (including liquid) 2 cloves garlic (minced) 1 tablespoon Better Than Bouillon (vegetable base) 4 cups vegetable broth

Instructions:

Plug in your slow cooker and set the heat to high.

Rinse the lentils and cull out small stones and debris. Add the lentils and all other ingredients to the crock-pot. Cook for 4 hours.

A meth pipe with a usable amount was recovered on the passenger seat. The man was found in possession of a Trek electric bike at the time of arrest. A deputy conducted follow up on the bike and found it had been stolen from a vehicle in January at the Holiday Inn in Carpinteria. The man was arrested and booked at Santa Barbara County Jail on multiple charges.

A man called 911 to report he had been smoking meth and was feeling “weird.”

Due to his demeanor, fire requested deputies respond to standby while he was loaded into the ambulance. Once the man was transported, a meth pipe was recovered from the room and booked for destruction.

Back where we started

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH A buddy of mine from Santa Barbara – one of the top-notch younger (he’s in his early 30s) surfers at Rincon – has a wave up North in Big Sur we’ve been trying to crack for a couple of years now. He got it good once and has the photos to prove it: deep-blue water monsters, many times overhead, bending into what would be a perfect cove if it weren’t for numerous rock heads breaking through the faces of the waves.

Rocks be damned, my buddy surfs right through them like a slalom course: “Rocks are your friends,” he says.

We made a two-day run up there a couple of weeks back, leaving town on a Sunday afternoon during a magic run of surf. Driving separately, my friend traveled with his lady and their fresh little baby, just 8-weeks old, and our Australian buddy rode shotgun with me.

Some folks will recognize the new baby and wild-man approach to surfing as belonging to Simon Murdoch. The Aussie is Torren Martyn, another amazing surfer, who has put much of the surfing world on its head in recent years with a unique and original style, riding unique and original boards that have been a real influence on my shaping work as well.

Torren had been in town for the last little while, turning heads at Rincon with his power and flow.

We surfed a great little reef in Morro Bay that evening with just us friends (and two other local friends from the zone up there), then stayed at another friend’s house nearby with the plan to head the rest of the way up to Big Sur at first light. The conditions looked good on the drive up, the many reefs and beaches around San Simeon indicating swell and favorable winds. We’d tried this mission one day last year during a massive swell, with reefs we didn’t even know existed breaking far out to sea and heavy sea smoke hanging over the rocky shore.

It would have been suicide, in my judgement, to paddle the Big Sur cove that day. But fortunately, there had been too much energy reverberating off the cliffs, putting an un-surfable wash through the lineup. Otherwise, I would have had the probably futile task of trying to talk Simon out of it. Horrendous waves, 30- or 35-feet in the face, continuously gnashed through a boneyard of rocks just south of the so-called “surf break”, and it was terrifying to imagine being out there. I could not see any way in which a surfer could have gotten themselves out of that situation had they been dragged into it.

But things looked more doable on this recent morning. The cove has some definition, despite the numerous ill-placed chunks of granite, and we watched from

And, of course, sometimes it is special.” the cliff top for some time. Waves came in fairly predictably, with a few bigger ones (about 15-feet) every half-hour or so. The trick, once we made it down the switchback trail, was to scramble out on the boulders and leap the rushing whitewater, then paddle like hell through a couple of rock pillars before the next wave rushed through.

Torren opted to run out to the top of the point, where he took another trail down and threaded the rocks, hair dry, right to the take-off spot, saving himself ten minutes of paddling. Of course, if his timing wasn’t right, he’d been turned into a human ping-pong ball amongst the barnacle-encrusted tombstones lining the point – but it seems Torren’s timing is always right.

A bright blue sky and golden sunshine (thank you, David Lynch) bathed the cove in morning light, and the glorious Santa Lucia Range lifted up behind dressed in Springtime green. We sat on our boards adjacent the furthest rock that was awash with Medusa-like tentacles of kelp.

Fast-forwarding this surf movie, I’ll just say that ultimately, although the wave undoubtably has real power, it was fairly flat-faced and had just enough bump across it from all the rock-influenced swirls and boils to make even a basic speed-line bank nearly impossible. So we did a few sleigh rides and managed to avoid being mowed down, no one hit the rocks, and that was that. (I think Simon’s day must have been on a particularly clean, pure swell, as it seems any ocean energy gets drawn into the cove causing a mix-up of waves.)

I suppose it’s all part of the game: you burn a tank of gas and drive most of the day on the hope of something special.

former boss Steve Pezman at The Surfer’s Journal used to say about there being no surf north of Point Conception. Factually, that is patently untrue – there are many, many fabulous waves all the way up this magnificent coast. But perhaps Pez is right in a more general sense. South of Conception the ocean gets more organized, these series of points and beaches better suited to wave riding.

While I’m not ready to give up on NorCal and its varied delights, I am coming to see that when it’s all added up, we’ve got a better overall surfing menu right here. In fact, at least from Monterey to San Francisco, the surf feels even more crowded than here, as there are actually fewer proper set ups. I was anxious to get home, as I’ve got a new shaping bay amongst the shops at 500 Maple St. right here in town. (We’re having a board swap this Saturday, March 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; come check out the showroom.) And, that magic run of surf was still going.

Though harbor seals usually flee people approaching on land and are not aggressive when approaching people in the ocean, they can inflict a dangerous bite. A 200-pound seal’s biteforce exceeds that of a dog, and there are occasional reports of injuries.

Popeye, a one-eyed beloved seal in Friday Harbor, Washington State, became accustomed to tourists feeding him, and on one occasion bit a boater who was not feeding him. Workers in marine mammal rescue centers know to exercise care.

Infection is always a concern with bites and “seal finger,” which causes inflammation and contracture of the fingers, is well known to seal hunters.

Disturbances

A woman who wanted to get close to the seals trespassed in Chevron property by the foot of the pier and scared several seals. If you walk the beach, please do not hesitate to let people know the seals are not threatened by Covid-19, but they are by human disturbance. For information on Sealwatch, call (805) 684-2247.

Circa 1930s, a fire truck passes the Presbyterian Church and the Carpinteria Herald Building on the corner of Ninth Street and Linden Avenue. The Carpinteria Union High School Fire District was in its infancy at the time. Later renamed Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District, the agency was initially manned mostly by volunteer firefighters who were paid a mere 40 cents an hour for training.

Warriors back on track with two Citrus Coast League wins

After falling to Malibu to open league play, Carpinteria baseball got back into the swing of things with two big Citrus Coast League wins back-to-back, over Hueneme and Fillmore.

It started with a strange “away game” for the Warriors, who were technically the visiting squad at their own field due to some construction at Hueneme’s ballfield.

Warriors sophomore righthander Joaquin Ramirez took the mound against Hueneme’s own sophomore Makoa Swanson.

After two innings, Carpinteria had built a 4-0 lead, capitalizing off some of the Hueneme pitcher’s control issues. The Vikings were able to roar back, getting 9 out of their 12 hits over three innings, jumping out to a 7-5 lead.

Robles, took over for the Vikings, while Warrior’s reliever Matt Muñoz took over for Carpinteria heading into the seventh inning.

Carpinteria, playing as the away team, lit up the scoreboard in the top half of the seventh, exploding for six runs to take an 11-7 lead. Needing just three outs, the Warriors were able to turn a crucial double play through shortstop Hunter Garcia, but Muñoz struggled to keep control of the strike zone and loaded the bases with just one out left to go.

Coach Pat Cooney called on senior Zach Mata for the final out, with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate. Mata forced a grounder headed straight to Warriors third baseman Oscar Velasquez, who fielded the ball and

tapped third base for the final force out to seal the game 11-7 for Carpinteria.

“This was a wild one,” Cooney said.

The game had plenty of action in addition to the late-game drama; Cooney said there were two lead changes, three balks, three errors, a rare stolen base at home plate, and a fan was ejected.

“At times, the play was solid and other times it looked like early season baseball,” he said. “In the end, it was great to get an important win under unusual circumstances.”

Muñoz helped earn the win on the mound, but also produced on offense with two RBIs off two hits on top of scoring two more himself. Erich Goebel made it on base three times, with a hit and two walks, and drove in two RBI’s while scoring two of his own. Garcia

scored another two with a hit and an RBI, but his double play in the final frame may have been one of his biggest contributions on the day.

Carpinteria followed their win over Hueneme with another league win, this time an official home game against Fillmore at John Calderwood Field.

The Warriors fell behind by three runs early on in the windy game but came from behind for the second time in a row with a monster third inning. Carpinteria scored seven runs in the inning off of five hits, two walks, two errors and two batters reaching first after being hit by a pitch.

Carpinteria took a 10-5 lead heading into the final inning, and although Fillmore loaded the bases with three singles on the final out, the Warriors were able to hold on for the win.

Four Warriors connected for at least two hits: Goebel, Garcia, Velazquez and Isaac Flores. “The players deserve credit for executing the game plan,” Cooney said.

The Warriors are now 3-1 overall, and 2-1 in Citrus Coast League play.

Warriors boys volleyball gets three sweeps in a row

Carpinteria’s boys volleyball team had a busy week, starting off on a roll with three 3-0 sweeps in a row over Ventura, Pacifica and Foothill Tech before dropping their fourth match 0-3 against Dos Pueblos.

Against Ventura, the warriors dominated each set, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-12. Joaquin Gonzalez finished with nine kills while Diesel Slade had six of his own. Gavin Lohuis had a game-high 25 assists and Sebastian McCurry dug 18 balls in the win.

“It was a good game for our first home match,” coach Mickey Caughey said.

The next win came in a 3-0 sweep over the visiting Pacifica Tritons. Caughey said Pacifaca was a “scrappy team,” and the first two sets were closely contested battles, 25-22 and 25-20. McCurry once again had a standout game on defense, leading the Warriors over Pacifica in the final set, 25-14. Slade finished with 11 kills and Gonzalez finished with nine kills.

The Warriors took that momentum into the next day, with the third home game of the week against Foothill Tech. Carpinteria handily won each set, 25-9, 25-21 and 25-7, for their third straight 3-0 sweep of the week. Coach Caughey said McCurry had a strong week at the libero position, dominating with digs and serves.

“He was all over the court running down balls and getting 33 digs in the process,” Caughey said. “His tenacity was contagious in inspiring the rest of our team, which resulted in a total of 90 team digs for the match.”

McCurry had a run of 11 straight points serving in the first set and another of 12 straight points in the third set.

The Warriors’ hot streak ended on Monday at Dos Pueblos, who proved too much for the Warriors. The Chargers swept the visiting Warriors in three sets: 16-25, 21-25 and 18-25. The Warriors may get a chance for a rematch as they prepare for the 45th Annual Dos Pueblos Invitational Volleyball Tournament this weekend, held at UCSB and Dos Pueblos High School. Carpinteria will start group play against Buena at 8 a.m. at Dos Pueblos.

Carpinteria boys tennis wins one of two matches

The Warriors hosted a powerful San Marcos boys tennis team, losing 16-0 before hitting the road to play Villanova of Ojai to pick up their fourth win of the year.

Carpinteria was outmatched against San Marcos, who won every set on the day before two matches were called early due to lack of sunlight. Coach Charles Bryant used the loss as a learning opportunity and said the team “played well and gained valuable experience” against the strong Royals team.

One bright spot, Bryant said, was watching the Royals’ defending CIF champion Masato Perera face Carpinteria’s top player Austin Stone.

“It was incredible tennis to watch the quality that both players showed and demonstrated in this highly anticipated match,” Bryant said. Though the two started out even, Parera pulled away for a 6-3 win.

The Warriors reloaded for their road match against Villanova, and Carpinteria was able to edge out a victory in a closely contested battle, 10-8.

Austin Stone swept his singles play, 3-0, while his brother Max went 2-1, only losing to Villanova’s top player, Timmy Quest.

Carpinteria is now 4-2 overall, heading into a week of two league matches.

Warriors swept in Santa Barbara dual-meet

Carpinteria opened up their dual-meet season at Santa Barbara, but the Dons outmatched the Warriors in nearly every event, claiming both the boys and girls team victories.

The Santa Barbara girls scored the bulk of the points on the track, winning every individual running event.

Carpinteria coach Van Latham said that the Warriors did show some promise and competitive spirit, especially on the girls’ side, with Ainslee Alexander winning three events: triple jump, pole vault and shot put. Alexander set a new personal record in the shot put with a distance of 28’7.5’’, while Mika Mullikin set her own personal record in with a high jump of 4’3’’.

Juan Trejo led the boys with wins in the shot put and discus, while Mateo Handall took wins in both the 200 and 400 meters with times of 23.96 and 52.69.

Warriors dominate in the pool at Raider Relays

Carpinteria continued its stellar year of watersports, with the swim team picking up where the boys and girls water polo programs left off, earning top honors at the Channel Islands Raider Relays at Hueneme High School.

The Warriors competed against Channel Islands, Hueneme, Fillmore, Pacifica and St. Bonaventure, with one team taking the trophy for the combined point total from both the varsity and junior varsity boys and girls.

In past years, Carpinteria struggled to put together consistent numbers, but Coach Jon Otsuki said this year the Warriors displayed “dominance with quality and quantity.”

Carpinteria amassed a combined total of 260 points on the day, with the secondplace Pacifica Tritons tallying 141 points.

The boys squad was led by Augie Sheaffer, Jackson Melton, Matthew Endow and Justin Main; while the girls were led by Erin Otsuki, Giulia Piccoletti, Taylor Classen and Lilli Nemetz.

Carpinteria won 7 out of 8 varsity boys relays, while the varsity girls also won 7 of 8 relays with the lone exception due to a disqualification due to a false start.

Coach Otsuki credited a strong group of underclassmen for pushing the future of watersports at Carpinteria. “This year there has been extra interest from the student body for the aquatics programs,” he said, “which bodes well for the future.”

Cate baseball loses on late game two-run error

Cate carried an 8-7 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning against Ojai Valley, but an error led to two runs that sealed the deal and handed the Rams a loss by one run.

Cate had four hits on the day, against seven from Ojai Valley. The Rams starting pitcher Emmet Mack lasted just over two innings, but hammered a home run in the sixth inning for what they thought would be the winning run.

Ojai Valley scored three runs in the fourth inning on the way to the comeback win.

Carpinteria 12-and-under AYSO team finishes second

Carpinteria’s AYSO 12-and-under girls team competed in the championship playoffs in Bakersfield, finishing second overall.

The hard-earned second place finish came after competing in five games total against teams from all over Southern and Central California.

“The team brought great effort and spirit to compete,” said coach Dan Runhaar.

The team was coached by Runhaar and Alex Ornelas.

The Carpinteria Arts Center will host a mixed media and collage workshop on March 19 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
