A suspect in a recent burglary attempt at iPower Resale was captured on camera while allegedly preparing for a larger crime. The young man is believed to be part of a criminal crew that has been attempting to secure the business’s keypad entry code and prowling around the buildings located on the west end of Carpinteria Avenue. Compassionate Care volunteers sought

To prepare volunteers for involvement in Hospice of Santa Barbara’s new program, Compassionate Care of Carpinteria, a training program will be held over six consecutive Tuesdays, from noon to 3 p.m., starting April 10. An application and pre-screening interview are required, and applications are due by March 30. The topics covered in the training are: hospice philosophy and history, grief and loss, as death nears, the hospice patient and family, cultivating the gift of listening, the role of the hospice volunteer, cultural and spiritual awareness, confidentiality and self-care. Carpinteria unscathed in last week’s storm

Last week’s fears of a Jan. 9 disaster repeat were laid to rest when Santa Barbara County lifted a mandatory evacuation order on the morning of Friday, March 3. The rainstorm that arrived late Thursday night and lingered until Friday morning dropped just .63 inches of rain in Carpinteria—and none at the intensity that might trigger a debris flow. Another rainfall event arrived Friday night, increasing the storm total to .86 inches. Carpinteria has received 3.6 inches total this rain season, which is 27 percent of normal for this time of year.

White shark researcher presents on local population trends

Shark researcher Dr. Chris Lowe will discuss the trend in increasing numbers of white sharks along the Southern California coast in a free lecture on Thursday, March 8 at 7 p.m. at Channel Islands National Park Robert J. Lagomarsino Visitor Center, 1901 Spinnaker Drive, in Ventura Harbor. Lowe, a faculty member at California State University Long Beach, tracks the migration of juvenile sharks as they leave Southern California waters in the winter for the warmer waters in Baja. He has found this pattern has changed in recent El Niño years when the waters are warmer in the local region’s coastal waters. Lowe has employed new technologies such as acoustic and satellite transmitters, autonomous underwater and aerial vehicles, and underwater camera stations to increase the understanding of white shark behaviors. His talk will emphasize the need to protect sharks and their nurseries and how juvenile sharks pose little threat to people as long as they are left alone, undisturbed.

Well-loved waitress says “adios”

After 43 years serving the muchloved specials and margaritas at Delgado’s restaurant on the west side of Carpinteria Avenue, waitress Sara Mecham is hanging up her order book.

“I still like my job,” Mecham said, “the people I work with and all the customers.”

Born in Cheyenne, Wyo., Mecham grew up moving to the various places her father’s work with Western Geophysical took the family—Utah, Montana, Colorado, Bakersfield and Taft. The family bought a beach house on Holly Avenue in Carpinteria and moved here when Mecham was 10 years old. “I guess that makes me a local!” the now 68-year-old jokes.

She didn’t want Barbies as a little girl, Mecham said. She wanted a horse. But it wasn’t until she was about 20-years old and living in a farm house in Lillingston Canyon near Cate School, that Mecham finally realized her dream when her brother-in-law gave her a horse named Jasper. She took riding lessons, and then rode with her two boys—one in front and one in back, and has been a horse and mule rider ever since.

At work, Mecham credits the Castillo and Delgado families with creating a pleasant atmosphere for both diners and employees: “They’re a really good family to work for.”

“The sad part of my work,” Mecham said, “is watching families grow up, then seeing people get old and frail, and then reading the obituary.” But overall, she said, “it’s been a really good experience

I’ve spent half my life here!” Although Mecham admitted that restaurant work can be hard—it gets too busy, people sometimes don’t show up for work and when things go wrong there’s nothing that can be done—she nevertheless said “the good outweighs the bad by far.”

Her favorite Delgado’s offering is the chicken relleno Michoacano, and Mecham said she’ll “have to come in and say hi to the people because I’ll miss them.” Looking ahead, Mecham said she’ll be doing more mule riding and taking care of her house and fruit trees on Vallecito Road. She and her husband

Jeff Mecham recently bought a camp trailer and they hope to take some trips with it. In addition to her four mules, who live at a property near Rincon Creek, and her two Jack Russell terriers, Mecham has five grandkids to keep her busy throughout her well-earned retirement.

Local extreme sports announcer Brad J calls the games

BY PETER DUGRÉ An adrenaline-soaked Shaun White, fresh off a flawless snowboard run in the halfpipe event—his dramatic final attempt that had to be his best—paces at the finish, hearing one voice boom over the crowd. “Will Shaun White claim his third gold medal?”

White waits, holding his board, nearly gnawing on it in suspense.

“It comes down to this moment, right here, right now!” the voice continues.

White goes pale for a silent moment.

“97.75! Shaun White has done it!”

White flips his board triumphantly. He won gold for team USA. Brad J, the stadium voice hyping the crowd during that moment, returned to his home in La Conchita last week for a short break before heading back to South Korea for the Paralympic Games.

J, also a DJ on Santa Barbara’s KTYD from 7 p.m. to midnight, counts announcing White’s win as his top moment at PyeongChang. “His reaction is off me announcing,” J said.

J had been the English-language venue announcer for White’s two previous golds, but this year’s achievement stood out because a nasty fall and injury had left White’s performance at the 2018 games in doubt. “He had to have his tongue reattached. He’s in his 30s, so to come back the way he did was unbelievable” said J, who also announced the slopestyle and big air events in addition to halfpipe.

In the mid and late 1990s, when the extreme sports industry took off, J found a foothold as a top-level announcer. He

had experience in radio for both KJEE and KTYD, but always gravitated to surfing and skating, having previously worked at Powell-Peralta Skateboards in Goleta.

J watched the fledgling ESPN-sponsored X Games and wasn’t impressed.

“When ESPN first started the X Games, they tried to hire their stick and ball sportscasters but saw it wasn’t going to cut it,” J said.

Through a friend of a friend, J parlayed

his extreme sports enthusiasm and radio chops into a now 20-year career in announcing for X Games and then the Olympics. He started with the X Games in 1999.

At his first Olympics in Salt Lake City in 2002, J didn’t hype the crowd with his words over the loudspeaker. He was the music director for all venues, selecting songs and organizing DJs to pump up the crowd with his sports-specific playlists.

He broke into announcing for the Olympics at the 2004 summer games in Athens, Greece in the sport of baseball.

With a versatile skill set, J had been the Dodgers DJ for five years as well. Then in 2010 at the winter games in Vancouver, he announced to the snowboarding crowds.

He did Sochi in 2014, and said Korea was a step up in hospitality over Russia.

“They were great (in PyeongChang). So happy. They had cheerleaders in snowboarding, of course,” he said.

J lands his Olympic gigs individually with the organizers at the host city. He’s networked into the niche and keeps getting rehired. This year he did broadcasting for the Olympic Broadcast Network in addition to live venue announcing and hopes his role will morph into more live television in the future.

In addition to Olympics and X Games, he announces big-time qualifying events around the world. He’s been to Dubai, Shanghai, the PanAmerican Games and all over Europe. During travels, he never misses his KTYD show. “I used to do it and pretend like I was in Santa Barbara.

Now I actually say, ‘Broadcasting from Korea.’”

The work is intense. Memorizing each athlete’s information, their likely repertoire of tricks and accurately calling them in real time—it’s not a job that a lot of other people do.

“One time, for an event I couldn’t make, they asked me if I had anyone else to recommend, and I honestly couldn’t think of anyone,” J said.

The Carpinteria Middle School gun threat last week resulted in good news because students were paying attention and took appropriate action. Bravo to them.

All students need to be encouraged: If you see or hear something—say something. Fortunately these parents did not have firearms in the home. Hopefully the student will receive therapy.

In Syria kids live with bombs. In America kids live with guns. What happened to the schools where kids went to learn and have fun with their friends?

We felt certain they would be safe and carefree. Now teachers, parents and kids are wondering, when will it be our turn?

Are we putting ourselves in harm’s way so that gun rights people can have their so-called 2nd Amendment rights and the gun manufacturers can continue making millions from death?

We must heed the message from the Parkland, Florida high school students: “Every kid in this country now goes to school wondering if this day might be their last. From the ashes, generosity rises

I would like to thank each and every person who has been so kind and thoughtful to me the last couple of months. My family has been outstanding.

I am one of the people who lost their home to the Thomas Fire. Since then, the outpouring of love, support and kindness knows no bounds.

The hugs used books from the library (that I wanted), gift cards (having a great time shopping), handmade jewelry, original art work, dog bed, umbrella, dinners.

I could go on and on.

I think that the above shows what Carpinteria Strong is all about and this wonderful beachside community is so supportive. Also, I have to thank the businesses in Santa Barbara and Ventura who are giving discounts for people who

have experienced a disaster.

I have left the ranch where I lived for 50 years and now am renting in Carpinteria. I’ve never lived in town before. My neighbors are helpful and very friendly.

Family, friends, neighbors and the wonderful people of Carpinteria, you have given me courage, strength and hope.

Creek log jam triggers fear

Citizens are deeply worried about the immense debris loads in the Carpinteria Creek especially under and around the railroad crossing and out to the ocean.

With each rain bringing more, it seems inevitable there will be a blockage that will result in a flood equal to or worse than the January experience. I’ve asked several officials about removal possibilities, and I get different answers. A city engineer said, “It’s not possible.” A park official replied, “Depends on if they get the right permits,” and another, “You are welcome to take it out yourself, but heck, Mother Nature will do its job.”

Hmm. Montecito creek watersheds got cleared. What are we waiting for? How can we help? Can we help? Can this be done? Please advise. This doesn’t seem right. Thank you.

After the horrific murders at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, Donald Trump boasted, “I really believe I’d run in there even if I didn’t have a weapon.” That’s mighty big talk for someone who pleaded for five draft deferments during the Vietnam War. Are we to assume his “bone spur” problem has miraculously disappeared, allowing him to charge bravely into the line of fire?

“Plump Trump” clearly fantasizes about being a super-hero, but his personal history would seem to indicate that the only running he has ever done was towards beauty pageant contestants, porn stars and Vladimir Putin.

Equal participation and equal representation in our society are core principles of our democracy. In addition, there is a pressing need for women to be involved in the electoral process. Issues affecting women are decided every day by school boards, city councils, boards of supervisors, state legislatures and congress.

In Santa Barbara County, women have achieved political and electoral success by grassroots organizing, marching, mentoring, advocating and campaigning.

The Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee (SBWPC), with its years of experience, is ready to prepare a new generation of feminist office seekers for the rigors of campaigning and the responsibility of public service.

If we want to protect the gains we have made and move our agenda forward, we must increase the number of qualified women in elected office, appointed office and any other positions where issues important to women and families are raised and discussed, policies made and legislation enacted, at the local, state and national levels.

It is more important than ever to commit to meaningful social action not only to protect women’s rights and our progressive values but also to be bold for change, even in these challenging times. To do that, more women must run for office, at all levels of government.

During these last 30 years, SBWPC has pursued gender equity through many avenues with the overarching goal of creating social change through public policy. Their belief that female elected officials would do more to make a difference in the lives of women has since been documented by academic institutes like the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University. Additional research from Stanford has demonstrated that female legislators perform better than their male counterparts once in office.

Obituaries

James “Jim” Ballard 1920 - 2018

James “Jim” Ballard passed away peacefully on Feb. 21, 2018 at 97 years of age, with his daughter and grandson by his side. His wife Margaret preceded him in death in 2010.

Jim was born in Oklahoma in 1920 and moved to Lindsay, Calif. in 1930. After graduating from high school in 1940 he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad. In 1942 the U.S. Army called.

After basic training in Louisiana, a cruise to England, courtesy of the naval flotilla, landed him in Scotland. In March, 1943 he met his wife-to-be in a small English village in the county of Devon, England.

They were the first and only Americans stationed in the village, and he was the first American she had ever met. They wed at the local church on Feb. 29, 1944.

On D-Day Plus 12 he landed on Omaha Beach. Being in the Core of Engineers 3rd Army with General Patton commanding, Jim’s company rebuilt many blown out railroad bridges. The most memorable was the Franklin D. Roosevelt, which is 4,280 feet long and was dedicated by Patton as the FDR Memorial Bridge on April 12, 1945. After VE-Day, Jim was

in Nuremberg, Germany where he was informed that his younger brother was in Czechoslovakia. He was able to make a quick trip to visit him before returning to Nuremberg. Shortly after, he had received enough points by virtue of medals, to be flown back to Florida and went by rail to an army base near Sacramento, Calif. where he was discharged on Sept. 22, 1945. His wife Margaret arrived on the Queen Mary in January 1946 and was taken by rail to California. In 1948 their first daughter, Linda, was born in Santa Monica, Calif., followed in 1951 by their second daughter, Wendy.

In 1970 Jim formed Pacific Acoustics North in Santa Barbara, Calif. Jim and Margaret resided in Carpinteria, where in 1971, Jim joined the Carpinteria Lions Club. He became very active within the club and was elected President in 197778. In 1984-85 he was elected District Governor of Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties where many new friendships were formed. In 1984 Jim was appointed by the County Supervisor as a director of the Carpinteria Cemetery District, a position he held until his death.

Jim also served as a board member, president, volunteer driver and dispatcher of HELP Inc., a nonprofit organization.

In 1986 Jim retired, and he and Margaret purchased a motor home. They traveled extensively with many friends throughout the United States, parts of Canada, and most continents throughout the world.

Jim is survived by his daughters Linda McCoy and Wendy Thurston, and grandchildren Emily Clouse and John McCoy, who made his home with his grandparents since 2000 and was integral to Jim’s care after the death of Margaret.

Jim was a man of grace, good humor and honor.

A memorial service will be held at the Carpinteria Lions Club Park on March 11 at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Carpinteria Lions Club or the Carpinteria Cemetery District.

Alex Mendez, Jr. 8/24/1940 – 2/21/2018

Alejandro “Alex” Mendez Jr., beloved husband, father, g r a n d f a t h e r, friend and companion, left us on the morning of Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018, with his family at his side after a prolonged and brave battle with pneumonia and stemming complications.

Alex was born Aug. 24, 1940 in Santa Paula, Calif. to Alex and Jesse Mendez.

Shortly thereafter the Mendez family moved and settled in Carpinteria, Calif.

A lifelong resident of the Santa Barbara area, he played amongst the many natu-

Royce Stauffer 8/21/1918 – 3/2/2018

Always involved and outspoken, Royce was a familiar figure in Carpinteria. He and his late wife Mildred never missed the Friday “Peace Corner,” and Royce continued to participate even at age 99. He was a citizen watchdog at local (CUSD) school board meetings, nipping at the heels of officials on subjects that ranged from the Warrior mascot controversy to paying property taxes on vacant school district property, which he argued should be sold. His sense of social responsibility was reflected in his active membership in the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and in his criticism of the local move to build more and larger jails.

Born in Ohio and raised near Chicago, Royce earned a degree in chemistry from the University of Idaho. He and Millie came to Carpinteria at the end of World War II, bought property on Toro Canyon Road and built their spartan, cinder-block home there. Royce got a job in a research lab at Cottage Hospital and worked with Sansum on some of the first diabetes medicines. He also engaged in agriculture. For many years the Stauffers spent weekends

After graduating from Carpinteria High School, Alex enlisted in the Marine Corps and served as a field communications operator in the South Pacific. He was very proud of his service to his country, which left him with a wealth of experiences in foreign lands. A dedicated and hardworking man, Alex was a provider with a strong work ethic, retiring after 42 years in the grocery industry.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alejandro Sr. and Jesse Mendez, and is survived by his wife, Carmen; daughter, Antonette; sons Thomas (Kim Lanh), Alex and Michael (Pamela); grandchildren Monique, Bao, Tula, Gavriella and Steffanie, and great granddaughter, Opal.

He is also survived by his sisters, Lucy Diaz, Elsie Merritt, Linda Hernandez (Danny) and Helen Mercer (Steve), and his bothers, Gilbert (Cindy) and Charlie, along with several nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held on Friday, March 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the McDermott-Crockett Mortuary, 2020 Chapala Street in Santa Barbara. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m. at Goleta Valley Church at 595 North Fairview Ave. in Goleta, with a reception immediately following at the church for family and friends.

at their property in the Coachella Valley, where they raised dates. In Carpinteria, Royce’s experiments with avocados led him to patent the “Toro Canyon” variety, popular for its resistance to root-rot.

For entertainment the couple enjoyed hiking and sailing their boat around the Channel Islands. When Royce bought a glider, Millie would track him in the car, arriving with the trailer at his landing point. They both loved opera and went to New York to attend the Met. In Carpinteria, Clementine’s was their favorite dining place; Royce often said the owners and staff “treated us like family.” They also traveled regularly to the Caribbean, to enjoy the warm waters at St. Martin’s Island.

Royce and Millie had been happily married 72 years when she died in 2012.

Royce continued his civic activism, serving on the board of the Carpinteria Valley Association, and becoming involved in Families ACT! of Santa Barbara, which aims to keep the mentally ill out of jail.

Always a mechanical wizard and adept at computer technology, Royce bought an electric car and could be seen driving the sporty blue Leaf around town, up through age 99. He was extremely independent, a voracious reader (mostly non-fiction) and passed his books on to the Friends of the Library. He supported the Bluffs acquisition, and one of his last photos shows him standing by his gate next to the sign “I donated—have you?”

Royce is survived by a circle of devoted friends, who count themselves lucky to have known such an extraordinary human being. A private celebration of Royce’s life will be held in the future. For those who want to make donations in his memory, Royce would probably suggest ACLU and Families ACT.

Residents meet with officials over Arroyo Paredon Bridge

On March 6, First District Supervisor Das Williams and officials from Caltrans and the County of Santa Barbara met with Carpinteria residents concerned about neighborhood impacts from the replacement of the Arroyo Paredon bridge on Foothill Road, slated for later this year.

Engineers and public works representatives laid-out their plans at the Canalino School meeting.

Residents expressed frustration over seemingly contradictory statements from Caltrans regarding the reasons for replacing rather than repairing the bridge, which sustained significant damage in the debris flow on Jan. 9.

“Don’t use this disaster to push something into this neighborhood we don’t want,” said Maureen Claffey, who lives with her family near the bridge. Claffey and other residents were also concerned that Caltrans may have given the Arroyo Paredon project an emergency designation in order to proceed without public input and avail themselves of federal funding.

Caltrans project manager Justin Borders acknowledged that the emergency designation does change the source of funding, saying “it’s a different pot of money” without specifying where that money comes from.

But Alex Tuttle of the Santa Barbara County Planning Department, which has jurisdiction over projects that take place in the Coastal Zone, also noted that although his office defers to Caltrans when the road agency determines that emergency conditions exist, an application for a permit must be submitted to the county within 90 days of the emergency declaration, and that moving forward, the project will be open to public input.

Caltrans has yet to apply for the county permit.

Matt Dobberteen of Santa Barbara County Public Works’ Transportation Division told the assembled community members, “We pledge transparency. This (project) is about trying to do a sensible design as quickly as possible that meets the character of the neighborhood.”

Due to the numerous emails that area residents have sent, Caltrans amended its initially proposed design—scaling back the widths of the shoulders on the bridge in order to preserve as many of the nearby trees as possible. “You’re in my head when someone says anything that might affect that sycamore,” Borders said to Maude Boersema, referring to a stand of trees between her property and the existing bridge.

Additional concerns include the potential for speeding on Foothill Road once the new, wider bridge is built, and the increased likelihood of accidents, as many of the households along the road include families with small children. Supervisor Williams said, “I want to speak heartily in favor of rumble strips” being installed at the bridge to reduce traffic speed. Caltrans Office of Design Chief Rick Helgeson said that he would submit requests for speed-mitigating aspects to the final bridge design.

Although no timeline has been firmly set, Caltrans representatives noted that their agency had completed a huge bridge project in Big Sur in only eight months last year, and are hopeful that the Arroyo Paredon project may be done before next year’s rainy season. The meeting was adjourned with a verbal agreement between residents, Caltrans and the County of Santa Barbara to meet again once the final stages of planning have been completed.

While the planning commission did not take official action on the issue of ADUs, each member agreed that the topic needs further exploration. New state laws regarding ADUs last year ordered local governments to ease restrictions on ADUs; however, the language of the law regarding the coastal zone exempted Carpinteria. City planners said that reducing the lot-size requirement from 8,000 to 7,000 square feet might help spur building extra units on single-family lots.

“We have outstanding young people who are being priced out of their own community,” said John Moyer, planning commissioner.

In opting to not voluntarily adopt state changes to ADU policy, members of the public and the city council, last year, had cited parking congestion as a primary reason to not ease regulation.

“People need housing, and yet cars are such a big deal,” said commissioner Jane Benefield. “The traffic, the noise is what they think is a big deal, but then where do we put the bodies?”

Goggia said that the addition of lowincome housing at Dahlia Court and Casa de las Flores put Carpinteria on track to meet its Regional Housing Need Allocation requirements. Also, the city has required the allocation of 12-percent moderate-income units in new housing developments.

New laws will require greater annual reporting to state HCD on inclusionary housing such as low and moderate income. Additionally, HCD will require further reporting on building permit applications and the time it takes to approve them, among many other new guidelines, in order more closely monitor housing

construction in the state.

While Carpinteria has mandated inclusionary housing in new for-sale developments within the city, apartment buildings have not been required to set aside affordable units. Goggia said that creating a new ordinance requiring apartment developers to dedicate a percentage of new units to inclusionary rents may soon be considered by the city. Goggia explained that since the city does not require rent control units in new apartment buildings, developers might find building apartments more attractive than for-sale dwellings. Evening the playing field might make sense, he said. Commissioners favorably discussed the idea of rent control on a percentage on new apartments.

The city may be entitled to state funds to pay for actions designed to alleviate the housing crunch under a law enacted Jan. 1. State fees applied to development will be directed to local governments to encourage the creation of new housing.

Goggia said the process for acquiring the money has yet to be established, but the city could apply for funds to offset costs of items like rewriting the General Plan. Developers of inclusionary housing, such as People’s Self-Help Housing, which built the Dahlia Court expansion and Casa de las Flores, will also be able to use the funds.

Other new state laws designed to streamline permitting for new developments will have no immediate impact on the city. Larger cities needing to meet housing requirements will likely see more workforce housing near transit centers and low-income housing as a result of the new laws.

“Based on our track record so far, HCD is basically saying you’re doing it. You’re going to do it. Good job,” Goggia said.

City staff is evaluating how to acquire new community development funds and how to comply with new HCD reporting standards, which will take effect in 2019.

“Black Panther”

“Black Panther” is all the rage. It first gained public attention for noncinematic reasons—for its nearly all-black cast, which is super rare, if not unique, in a superhero movie.

But it has also gotten rave reviews as a movie—as a story about a group of people from southeast Africa who long dodged the ills of the world, but who increasingly grapple with how to deal with their broader responsibilities to the oppressed.

Within the royal family of Wakanda, there are two major factions. One side is peace-loving, conciliatory and isolationist. The other side is more, let’s say, proactive. They think that oppressed people should be armed and dangerous, and that Wakanda should do that arming.

And Wakanda could do that, if it wanted, because Wakanda is a special place. Millions of years ago a meteor carrying a seemingly inexhaustible supply of vibranium—the strongest metal in the universe—homed right in on Wakanda. So, once people came on to the scene, they found themselves with a treasure trove of the element.

And it turns out vibranium is more than just super strong. It can do almost anything—it makes for impenetrable armor, especially potent weapons, a whole complex magnetic energy grid, and all sorts of other whiz-bang, sci-fi technology. Oh, also, it has healing powers.

But a while back Wakanda decided to sit tight with their vibranium. Not only did they set aside any imperialist ambitions, they even found a way to hide their thriving metropolis from the outside world, so that, to the more power-hungry and resource-grabby countries out there (ah-hem), Wakanda would look like one of the poorest places in the world. Which is sort of brilliant, because being poor really is the best way to get ignored.

This isolationist tradition is passed down from generation to generation through the hereditary monarchy led by their king, the Black Panther, who has special powers of bad-assery.

The Black Panther will go out every now and then on good-will missions, often disguised as an ordinary dude, but mostly his job is to keep a low profile and minister to the people of Wakanda.

That is, until the aptly named Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) decides to challenge the even-keeled, kindly, righteous and current Black Panther, T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), for the throne. Though long an outsider, Killmonger does, as it turns out, have some claim to the throne. And he’s ready to be done with

this mind-your-own-business style of leadership. He wants to fight, kill and otherwise brutalize his (and others’) oppressors.

The question, I suppose, is whether Wakanda is ready for that, or willing for it to happen, or willing to stand up to one of their own, or able to find some kind of middle ground while also trying to understand their own history and place in the world around them.

Outrage is easy. But, then again, so is compliance.

As I said, the fact that “Black Panther” exists is important in all sorts of extra-cinematic ways. But I don’t feel particularly well equipped to add much to that discussion. If you’re interested, you might check out Carvell Wallace’s “Why ‘Black Panther’ Is a Defining Moment for Black America” in The New York Times or Adam Serwer’s “The Tragedy of Erik Killmonger” in The Atlantic.

But as for the movie itself—qua Marvel superhero movie—“Black Panther” isn’t quite as ground-breaking. It does less to break the mold. It’s your standard Marvel movie, with fairly standard plot points, action sequences, humor and archetypes.

Which isn’t to say “Black Panther” is bad qua movie. It’s actually pretty good as far as these things go. It’s beautifully shot, well acted, action packed, entertaining, etc. If I didn’t have such a bad case of superhero fatigue, I might be all about it.

At any rate, the main significance of “Black Panther” clearly goes beyond its merits as a movie about a superhero.

And if you go into it with that context in mind, all sorts of thought provoking symbols, metaphors and other elements will emerge. “Black Panther” will give you plenty to ponder if you let it.

If you let it. Otherwise it will just be another Marvel superhero movie. Not a bad one. But one among many. Maybe, for you, that amounts to a rave review all on its own. Still, if you’re going to go, might as well appreciate its other virtues as well.

“Black Panther” is rated PG-13 for prolonged sequences of action violence, and a brief rude gesture.

Is there a moment from your wedding that stands out from all the others in your memory? Describe it and explain why it meant so much to you.

Diana: Hearing the music come on and knowing it was my turn to walk down the aisle with my dad. I had tunnel vision and was only looking at Morgan. In the middle of our ceremony we were able to pause, turn and lock eyes with all of our family and friends and thank them for being there to celebrate with us. This was incredibly special and humbling knowing everyone was there for us and there to support our next step as husband and wife.

Morgan: The weather was absolutely perfect as I was standing under the arbor. Hearing the music come on and seeing Diana for the first time as she was coming down the aisle is a memory that stands out from the rest. It was surreal and better than I could have ever imagined. It signified the realness of what was to come, the beginning of our journey as husband and wife.

What did your guests say was their favorite facet of the event?

Diana: The ceremony, hands down. Almost everyone said it was one of the best ceremonies they’ve ever attended and that our friend Danny did an amazing job officiating and capturing who we are as individuals, as well as the love and connection between us. They also said it was perfect weather and a beautiful venue which really helped set the mood for the entire day.

SUMMERLAND IS THEIR HOME Did your wedding include special details that reflected your individual personalities?

Diana: Both Morgan and I love to be outdoors (especially at the beach or hiking) and travel and love our dogs. We are also obsessed with sunsets. One of our favorite places to go is Hawaii. We incorporated these things by placing pictures of our travels at the guest sign in table, used a Hawaiian/beachy theme throughout our wedding (can be seen in the bouquets, men’s leis, table settings and arbor), and picked green as our color to represent our love for nature. We also had my 12-year-old black lab, Pongo, as our ring bearer.

What was most stressful leading up to the wedding? How did you cope with that stress?

Diana: Finding a dress! I am already an indecisive person as it, but I was in the middle of studying for my Physical Therapy Board Exam and finding a dress was not a priority. Finally I found one less than two months from our wedding day.

Did you have to put out fires during the event? Looking back, could those have been prevented?

Diana: No! Everything was so smooth and fell into place perfectly.

Why did you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they work well with your vision?

Diana: We have both ran, hiked and taken our dogs to Elings Park for the last 10 years and felt that this was a perfect place to represent us both as a couple and as individuals and our love for Santa Barbara County (where we met). Not only that, it has amazing views of both the ocean and mountains, our two favorite things, and a place we could watch the sunset!

What part of the meal did people enjoy most? Was there anything on the menu that you would skip if you had a redo?

Diana: DJ’s California Catering killed it! The entire meal was amazing.

Their bartenders did a fantastic job preparing our requested signature cocktails and serving at our open bar. They were also the set-up and clean-up crew and were so professional. Everyone commented on how great the service was. And it was so cool to hear the staff say that this was one of the best groups of people they’ve been able to serve and that there was such a great vibe; they could really feel the love and connection between everyone.

Weddings can end up feeling like they’re for the guests instead of the bride and groom. What did you do to ensure that the day was wonderful for you?

Diana: For starters we planned the entire wedding ourselves. The venue, food, florals, décor, etc. were all things that we loved and felt represented us. Secondly, we told each other to stop every so often to make sure we were present in the moment and take everything in.

What is your top piece of advice for couples planning a wedding?

Diana: Take your time, there is no rush and start talking to your family and friends who have already planned a wedding! I had plenty of time to plan (a year), and that’s probably why I didn’t feel stressed. And my friends and family were a great help. Start by prioritizing (venue, food, photography, etc) what is most important to have at your wedding; this will immensely help you to stay within your budget, as well as focus on what will make the day perfect for you.

Get a day-of coordinator so you can actually enjoy your special day! I enjoyed planning all the details leading up to the wedding; however, if this is something that is stressful for you, hire a coordinator to do all the planning as well.

Resilience: The body remembers CVN

Last night, March 7, the Carpinteria Children’s Project (CCP) with the support of the Santa Barbara County Department of Social Services’ Barb Finch hosted the screening of the documentary “Resilience” at the Alcazar Theater. Dr. Peggy Dodds, Pediatrician at the Public Health Clinic, CUSD Superintendent Diana Rigby, Alejandro Vasquez of Hospice of Santa Barbara, and Dr. Ryan Smith of CALM shared their insights after the film. All involved hope that this screening opens a new conversation in Carpinteria.

Here is a synopsis of the documentary by the producers: “‘The child may not remember, but the body remembers.’ The original research was controversial, but the findings revealed the most important public health findings of a generation. ‘Resilience’ is a one-hour documentary that delves into the science of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and the birth of a new movement to treat and prevent toxic stress. Now understood to be one of the leading causes of everything from heart disease and cancer to substance abuse and depression, extremely stressful experiences in childhood can alter brain development and have lifelong effects on health and behavior.

“However, as experts and practitioners profiled in ‘Resilience’ are proving, what’s predictable is preventable. These physicians, educators, social workers and communities are daring to talk about the effects of divorce, abuse and neglect. And they’re using cutting edge science to help the next generation break the cycles of adversity and disease.”

The research shows that most adults had adverse childhood experiences (ACE); there is little connection between social status or level of wealth and number of ACEs. Wondering about your ACE score? Last night, we offered the ACEs survey that is being used in the county, but you can take another version at acestoohigh.com/. Thinking about early traumatic experiences can bring up many

emotions. If this has happened for you and you would like to talk with someone, please contact CCP’s Family Resource Center (566-1619, info@carpchildren.org).

As Finch wrote, “The message of the film is a hopeful one. Resilience is not something we’re born with, it gets built over time and there are people and organizations that can help.” Resilience is the flip side of adverse childhood experiences—what skills and mindsets do we bring to dealing with past, present and future adversity? Resilience can be developed. It’s like the secret sauce of life.

The American Psychological Association offers 10 tips for helping children (and all of us) develop resiliency. Find them in their entirety at apa.org/helpcenter/ resilience.aspx 1) Make connections with friends and family 2) Help your child by having him or her help others 3) Maintain a daily routine 4) Take a break from things that worry you 5) Teach your child self-care (model it for her!)

6) Set reasonable goals and move toward them one step at a time 7) Nurture a positive self-view 8) Keep things in perspective and maintain a hopeful outlook 9) Look for opportunities for self-discovery 10) Accept that change is part of living People with resiliency skills still experience pain, sadness and other effects of trauma, but they are better able to process through their emotions and move on with their lives. As Jack Shonkoff said in the documentary, “We need to put to bed forever the sense that children who are born under disadvantaged circumstances are doomed to poor life outcomes. Science is saying that is not true.”

So be resilient and hopeful because “what is predictable is preventable.”

Local writers’ group member anthologized

Jim Williams, a Goleta resident who has been a member of the Carpinteria writers’ group Writers Way for over 30 years, has four stories in the new 11-author anthology of western fiction by Sundown Press, “Best of the West.” Williams’ book “Cattle Drive” was presented in the Coastal View News a few years back, and was the winner of the Western Fictioneers’ Peacemaker 2014 Award for Best First Novel. Every year the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce faces a mission impossible: choosing just one Junior Carpinterian of the Year. The committee starts with a pool of worthy applicants, pares it down to interviewees, then announces three finalists. At the annual Community Awards Banquet, scheduled this year for Saturday, March 10, one of these three will be named the Junior Carpinterian of the Year, an honor that comes with a $4,000 college scholarship.

A closer look and a conversation with the three seniors help to paint the colors and shapes of each individual—music, art, athletic dedication and academic passions.

Gandhi’s instructions to “be the change you want to see in the world” guide Carpinteria High School senior Anna Artiaga. Serving as the associated student body president this year, Artiaga works to make everyone at CHS feel accepted and supported, no matter their popularity, skin color, gender or physical limitations. With Gandhi’s words in mind, she coordinates rallies and other events aimed at unifying the campus and eliminating alienation.

A U.S.-born citizen, Artiaga feels connected to her El Salvadorian heritage. Her parents immigrated to the United States just two months before her birth. She considers them role models for overcoming obstacles to give her a better life, and for the value they both place on education. Her father earned an associates degree in film production as a recent immigrant, and her mom completed some college as well.

In addition to her ASB leadership, Artiaga’s proudest accomplishment is in athletics, where she has managed to participate in three sports—including three years on the varsity tennis team—while also maintaining a 3.64 GPA and involvement in Spanish Club, Interact Club, the Homeless Outreach Club, MESA and Youth Wellness Connections. “Athletics have taught me to push harder in everything in life, to put 100 percent into any activity,” she said.

The ambitious senior has set her sights on a career in mechanical engineering. She is still waiting to hear back from top choice George Washington University, but would be thrilled to attend San Francisco State University, where she has already been accepted.

It’s tough to stand out as the youngest of four super-successful siblings, but Jeremy Saito has managed. The charming Carpinteria High School senior who was voted Mr. Warrior last fall, maintains a 4.41 academic GPA and a dedication to music that fills hours of each day.

Modesty, it’s worth noting, is another of Saito’s defining characteristics. He pointed out that his competitors for Junior Carpinterian of the Year are just as deserving as he is, and said that he relishes being part of a tight-knit senior class full of “amazing people.”

The Carpinteria Masonic Lodge honored Chloe Singer, Jessica Lord and Ava Engle as its Students of the Quarter at its Feb. 12 event. Palminteri shares disaster experience

As the Thomas Fire blazed and the Jan. 9 debris flow followed, Santa Barbara area residents leaned heavily on KEYT reporter John Palminteri to provide critical and captivating news. The Carpinteria resident didn’t sleep for days as he covered these events, and on Feb. 21 he brought his own behind-the-scenes stories of the disasters to the Rotary Club of Carpinteria. He shared the complication of simultaneously reporting on television while being called by the BBC and other international news sources trying to access more information, as well as the challenges related to KEYT’s first-time live streamed coverage on the internet.

Rotarian Roland Rotz reflected on Palminteri’s courage and sensitivity when it came to discussing traumatic event. “His openness to discuss the tragedy allowed us to open up and share our own trauma and fear, and realize we were not alone.

Most of all, I really think it was cathartic for John, himself, as he relived his story and shared his experience with a room full of Rotarian friends,” said Rotz.

Palminteri will once again serve as Master of Ceremonies at the Rotary’s Talent Showcase scheduled for April 21.

Kicking it up a notch

CHS wins first round of CIF Regional playoffs

BY ALONZO OROZCO For the third time in as many weeks, the Carpinteria High School boys soccer team hosted a playoff match on March 6 and delivered a win for the home crowd.

The top-seeded Warriors took on Torres of Los Angeles in the first round of the CIF Southern California Regional Division Soccer Championships for Division V and prevailed 1-0 thanks to a golden goal in overtime. This time Angel Orozco’s talented foot kicked the game winner to advance his squad into the second round against Chavez of Delano, which is scheduled for Thursday, March 8 at 4 p.m.

Once again, the Warriors controlled play, possessing the ball for the majority of the first half. However, the home team found difficulty finding the back of the net as the game progressed. Near the 11th minute, Luis Garcia got off a shot near the goal, only to be denied by the Toros’ Christan Garcia. Carpinteria’s Gabe Barajas also had a good opportunity in the 17th minute at the top of the area, but his blast carried over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.

“Offensively today, coaches and I were talking about it, I don’t know if it had to do with tired legs … maybe the (CIF-SS Division VI) championship is still sinking in … they weren’t truly focused on today’s objective,” said Warriors coach Leo Quintero of his squad, which remains unbeaten at home this season. In the 34th minute, Carpinteria nearly got on the board again, but Luke Nahooikaika’s header off a throw-in from twin brother Solomon Nahooikaika soared high over the crossbar. The two teams would end up tied 0-0 at the end of the first half.

The Warriors came out more aggressively in the second half. In the 43rd minute, Orozco beat Torres goalkeeper Eduardo Cano to the ball deep in the area, but his attempt ended up trickling wide of the mark. The intense play also led to a couple of yellow cards, as Carpinteria had a difficult time breaking

through against the defensive-minded Toros. “For the last half, (the Toros) were just sitting back a little more, hoping for PKs (penalty kicks),” said Quintero, suggesting that the visitor’s strategy may have been to extend the match past overtime, where the game would then be decided on a penalty kick shoot-out.

But CHS’s sixth-year coach implemented a strategy of his own. “We were still 0-0 with 15 minutes left, so we decided to put our ace out there and see what he could create,” explained Quintero, speaking of Vincent Gonzalez who was inserted into the lineup late in the game. “I think the boys lifted themselves mentally a little bit with having him out there,” of the senior who has scored five goals in the postseason.

However, the move wouldn’t pay dividends right away. The game went into overtime, but Gonzalez, who had been injured in the championship game, would figure into the outcome. Halfway into the overtime, Garcia directed the ball toward Gonzalez, using the senior as a decoy. The ball slipped through to Orozco whose laser shot ended the game. “(Orozco) received it, took a defender off it, and shot a nice shot across the keeper’s body,” said Quintero. Warrior goalkeeper Christian Estrada picked up three saves on the day en route to the shutout.

Warriors crowned CIF champs Rubidoux falls in hard-fought finals

By Alonzo oRozco In a winter sports season filled with the improbable—record-breaking fires and deadly debris flows—the Carpinteria High School boys soccer team became the best kind of improbable phenomenon when it brought home the CIF-SS Division VI Title last Saturday against Rubidoux. With the scored tied at 2-2 in overtime, the Warriors, as a result of a mishap in which the Falcons knocked the ball into their own goal, came home with their first CIF Championship in boys soccer since 1999.

For Coach Leo Quintero, his team’s run to the title came as no surprise. “The combination of the seniors and the threeyear varsity players, and the freshmen class—it was just the right combination at the right time,” he said.

The team triumphed on a neutral pitch in Corona. “It (the real possibility of winning a championship) was like two weeks before the season started when we were just touching balls,” said senior Gabriel Barajas, the second-year varsity standout who had to miss his sophomore year. Quintero also gave credit to assistant Jerry Rodriquez who ran a rigorous

conditioning program just before the season began.

Like much of the postseason, the Warriors jumped out to the early lead with Vincent Gonzalez finding the back of the net two minutes into the match to give Carpinteria a 1-0 lead. “It felt amazing, good to just start the game off strong, to come out on top first,” said Gonzalez.

“The whole crowd was roaring, a lot of amazing energy there.”

But Rubidoux would counter quickly to get the equalizer in the ninth minute.

However, the Warriors answered back with Angel Orozco scoring in the 17th minute to make it a 2-1 game. They took that lead into the second half only to see the Falcons tie the score at 2-2 early, and neither team would eventually find the scoreboard to force the match into overtime. And, Rubidoux’s own goal would turn into a golden goal, giving Carpinteria a sudden victory for the win.

“We dedicate this season to our teammate Marco (Villareal) and Mr. (Bill) Swing,” said Gonzalez of the junior who was injured in an accident in the beginning of the season and the longtime school yearbook and CVN photographer who recently passed away.

Baseball

February 28 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team won its first game of the 2018 season over Villanova Prep, 9-2. The Warriors started up the offense in the first inning, when Dom Sturdivan singled on a one-and-one count, scoring two runs.

Junior lefty Chase Mayer was credited with the victory, as he surrendered two runs on three hits over four innings, striking out four and walking one. Noah Nuño threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen, striking out eight without allowing a hit. Toby Spach went three-for-four at the plate, including a solo homer to lead the Warriors in hits, runs scored with two, and RBI with two. Jacob Macias tripled and scored twice, while Vance Keiser had four quality at-bats including a hit, two RBI and two sacrifices.

Track and Field

March 3 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team hosted the Rincon Races where the girls finished first in the team competition and the boys took second.

Foothill Tech won the boys meet with Fillmore taking third, while Nordhoff and Foothill Tech tied for second for the girls.

The Warrior girls were paced by double winners Josie Gordon and Yvette Zamora.

Gordon won the 100 and 200 meters, equaling her personal best of 13.77 seconds and capturing the 200 in 29.64. Zamora won the first 300 hurdle race of her career with a time of 53.45 and took the 100 meter hurdles in 19.36. Rounding out the Warrior victors, sophomore Shaylah Alvarez won the triple jump with a personal record of 31 feet, 4 ½ inches, and Chloe Singer won the pole vault by clearing 7-6.

On the boys side, Wyatt Stevenson won the 100, and was part of the winning 4x100 relay team, while Roderick Hutchinson won the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 9 ½ inches and also ran on the first-place relay team. Sophomore Victor Rinaldi won the 600 meters with a time of 1:29.12, and Ben Medel was the winner in the triple jump, traveling 31 feet, 7 inches.

Boys tennis

March 6 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team lost a non-league match to Ventura, 16-2. “Even though Jeremy Saito did not win a set, I thought he played very well and constructed great points,” said Warrior coach Charles Bryant. Ian McCurry recorded one of the wins in singles. In doubles, Kirby Zapata/Jackson Phillips went 1-2 winning their set, 6-0. “We knew going in that they would be quite strong and they lived up to their billing,” said Bryant. Carpinteria is now 2-1 overall and will host San Juan Hills on Saturday.

Boys volleyball

March 6 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team took on Nordhoff and won by a score of 3-1. “The Warriors did not back down and continued pushing forward,” said Carpinteria coach Dino Garcia. “Junior and starting setter Luke Nakasone thrived under the pressure and helped secure the win”, added Garcia.

Co-Captain Jack Gay finished with 12 kills. The Warriors improve to three and one on the season with match scores of 25-22, 21-25, 25-20 and 26-24.

Ben Soto named National Double-Goal Coach

Cate head football/baseball coach Ben Soto has been named a national Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA) Double-Goal Coach Award Winner presented by TeamSnap. out of around 800 national applicants, Soto was one of 50 winners chosen for the award. Winners are chosen based on coaches’ positive impact on youth while pursuing winning and the even more important goal of teaching life lessons through sports.

“I am humbled to have been picked as one of the 50 winners,” said Soto. “Again, I state that I am just a piece of the puzzle that is made up of so many great, great people, (coaches and non coaches) that I have been able to have been around.”

The 50 winners will be honored at the Positive Coaching Alliance’s National Youth Sports Awards & Benefit at Maples Pavilion at Stanford University on Saturday, April 28. According to the PCA, “this inspiring evening is the pinnacle of Positive Coaching Alliance’s year where we recognize our outstanding National Double- Goal Coach Award Winners. This year, NFl hall of fame quarterback Steve Young will be honored as the Ronald l. Jensen lifetime Achievement Award Winner.

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY How easy is it to get your family stories into print? You may be happy to realize that you’ve already started!

Facebook has become a popular arena for families to convene and reminisce, and is one of the simplest ways to collect memories and family history. If you already have an account, you can create a “group page” where far-flung relatives can meet to share what they know and remember about your ancestors. From your homepage, click on the down arrow on the top toolbar to reveal the option “Create Group.” All you have to do is name your group, add people who you would like to participate, and select your privacy level.

You may want to make this a closed group, where only members can see what is posted, so as to prevent any of those skeletons in the closet from becoming public fodder. Does the world need to know that Great Aunt Mable never wore underwear, or that Grandpa Fred had a still hidden in the barn? The choice is yours, but once you click the “create” button, the reminiscing can begin!

The group page works the same as your personal page, allowing members to post photos, messages and videos.

This is a great way to get to know distant cousins, and you will be amazed at the photos and memories they may have of your parents and grandparents that you never saw or heard.

Taking it a step further, you can publish a book of all the history you amass. Shutterfly.com and CreateSpace.com are two online companies that make it simple to put together books.

You may have heard of Shutterfly as it’s one of the sites where you can make photo album books, but it can also be used with photos and text. It’s template driven, but you have a lot of creative control in the size of your finished book and how you want the pages laid out.

The number of options you have to chose from for the template may seem daunting, but pick the first one you like and get started—you can always change it or add other templates along the way.

CreateSpace allows individuals to publish soft cover memoirs like this one. ing them where you want on the page is a snap (you can take digital photos of old school photos and/or scan them into your PC). Then all you need to do is add text boxes that are either merely captions or paragraphs long, and you have a completed page.

Once you get the hang of designing your pages, you’ll be up and running and having a great time! The quality of these published hardcover, full-color books is beautiful, and you can check the cost all along the way as you add pages. Shutterfly is more expensive than CreateSpace, which only offers softcover books, but they often have discounts of 50 to 70 percent. It would be worth it to put the book together, then wait for the discount announcements.

CreateSpace is connected to Amazon. com, and is a surprisingly budget friendly service for publishing softcover books.

With them, you design your masterpiece in Word or Pages, convert your manuscript into a pdf file, then upload that file into CreateSpace. Yes, this does take a bit of skill and effort to master, and it helps immensely if you have experience combining text and photos on your computer. But once you’ve accomplished that, CreateSpace has instructional steps that keep the process from becoming overwhelming. You can also choose the size of your finished project, and it’s best to check out what sizes they offer before you start designing your book so you can set up your pages appropriately to begin with.

Firefighters from the Carpinteria Summerland Fire Protection District demonstrated lifesaving vehicle rescue techniques to members of the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce on Feb. 28. Chief Ray Navarro also updated Chamber members about an advancing storm system that had county officials poised to make a mandatory evacuation order for those living beneath the Thomas Fire burn scar areas. Fortunately, the storm’s intensity was insufficient to cause debris flows, and Carpinteria only received relatively light showers.

Canalino lays the groundwork for college

on Feb. 22, Canalino school held a College and Career Day with presenters from various fields speaking to students from first- through fifth-grades. Three hundred students and family members participated in the event, which included activities like entymology with live insect displays, astronomy for night-sky viewing and marine biology with a touch tank set up in a classroom thanks to the UCSB marine science department. Local physical therapist Omar Flores demonstrated kinesiology techniques, and Lorilee Collins, a leader in bicycle safety education, showed students a bike-driven blender in which she made smoothies. Parent and local fisherwoman Jaime Diamond demonstrated squid dissection, and the campus was thrilled to have so many participants discovering the variety of careers on the horizon.

Preschool through fourth-graders at The howard School participated in hands-on activities with exploding canisters, catapults, hand-made ice cream, rockets, bubbles, potato launchers and gak making, in the school’s annual Science expo on Feb. 28.

Olivia Grace Flores was born on Feb. 23, 2018 to proud parents Michael and Nidia Flores of Ventura. The newborn baby girl weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces and was born at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura. Grandparents are Michelle Luera of Carpinteria and Elsa Archila of Ventura. Her great-grandmother is Betty Luera of Carpinteria.
