Alcazar Theatre to host Annette Fisher benefit concert

On March 15, from 4 to 9 p.m., #Carpstrong and the Alcazar Theatre will host a special benefit concert, “An Evening of Love,” for community member and California Avocado Festival board member Annette Fisher, who is currently battling cancer. Rick Reeves, SoLuna, South on Linden, The Youngsters, the Traveling Hurtados and Superstoked will perform.

Refreshments will be provided by Teddy’s, Jack’s Bistro, Albertson’s and Smart and Final. VIP tickets are $50 and include VIP seating, a drink ticket, appetizers and a private acoustic set with Annette and her family. General admission is $25.

On March 6, Santa Barbara County’s Planning and Development Department approved a Coastal Development Permit (CDP) for the 14.66-acre G&K Farm/K&G Flower, 3480 Via Real/3561 Foothill Road, marking the first CDP issued to a cannabis cultivation operation in Carpinteria Valley. The application was submitted on Dec. 14, 2018 by owner Graham Farrar. The approved CDP allows for the use of the existing five greenhouses, totaling 356,070 square feet, for cannabis cultivation, with nursery, mixed light cultivation, off-site distribution and existing fencing ranging from 6 to 8 feet in height. The odor abatement unit will be located within the existing shade structure. Two existing water tanks and four proposed water tanks will be used as part of the cannabis operations. Water will be sourced from an existing agricultural water well.

In Carpinteria, there are 15 other CDP applications for cannabis cultivation currently under review, according to Supervising Planner of the Cannabis Program Petra Leyva.

Additionally, there is one CDP permit application awaiting a zoning hearing. The approval of a CDP may be appealed within 10 days, filed in writing, to the Planning Commission. For more information, visit sbcountyplanning.org or call (805) 568-2017.

Annual Orchid Show promises finest blooms

The 74th annual Santa Barbara International Orchid Show, one of the country’s largest and oldest celebrations of orchids, will be held March 15-17. The Orchid Show pays homage to over 25,000 species of uniquely captivating blooms. With its mild Mediterranean climate and soft ocean breezes, Santa Barbara County growers produce more orchids than any other region in the country. Local growers and board members such as Westerlay Orchids and Gallup & Stribling will be joined by first-class domestic and international cultivators. Many growers introduce their finest blooms at the orchid show before sending them out as potted plants, cut-flower sprays and individual corsages. Three-day passes are available, and group tickets may be reserved through the website. General admission is $14, seniors (ages 65+), students with ID and advance group sales (minimum 25) are $12 and children 12 and under are free with an adult. School board to face looming budget cuts

At the Feb. 26 Carpinteria Unified School District Board meeting, board members voted unanimously to serve on the board in a voluntary capacity, without compensation, discussed budget priorities and heard a statement from board member Maureen Foley Claffey, who apologized for the impact of previous comments and stressed her commitment to equity in education.

The meeting got off to an amicable start, as Superintendent Diana Rigby recognized Carpinteria High School teachers Debra Joseph and Sarah Rochlitzer for their work launching a new performing arts honor society. Rigby also honored the teachers and students of the Carpinteria Middle School science department for using their holiday weekend to transition into the new science Gen7 classrooms.

Principal Barnaby Gloger of Rincon and Foothill high schools presented a report on the alternative high schools of Carpinteria as well as an updated safety plan for all district schools. Board members showed keen interest in these smaller institutions of local education. Board member Andy Sheaffer congratulated Gloger on Rincon’s entrepreneurship elective course, in which students learned the art of silk-screening and produced t-shirts for the school and local businesses. Commending Gloger and staff’s work on the safety plan, board member Sally Green was moved to say, “I was working for the district when Columbine happened, and we were basically on our own.”

The apparent harmony quickly dissipated, however, as the meeting’s public comments section began. Multiple members of the public spoke, including CUSD parent Jaime Diamond who expressed outrage at what she said was Foley Claffey’s suggestion of a “cannabis conspiracy” working against her. In an at-times emotional address, Diamond spoke to Foley Claffey directly, saying, “I voted for you, and you alone on my ticket, but somewhere along the line I feel you got lost.” Subsequent speakers piled on, reading from the “Save CUSD” online petition calling for Foley Claffey’s resig-

Janet Pettine described watching school board meetings as “grueling, horrible, awful, awful, awful,” and sharply lamented what she saw as Foley Claffey and board member Rogelio Delgado’s focus on “contentious minutiae,” “lack of understanding” and “failure to function as a cohesive body.”

The board then voted 5-0 to approve the second reading of bylaw 9250, stating: “The governing board views board service as a voluntary contribution to the community and elects not to receive the compensation to which it is entitled by law.”

Discussion of possible options for required budget cuts revealed sharply differing interpretations of the roles that the district and Carpinteria Association of United School Employees (CAUSE), the CUSD employee union, have regarding their respective roles.

Board member Rogelio Delgado asked Rigby if the district had consulted with the union about potential lay-offs. “As I explained in the last board meeting,”

Rigby began, “the process is: we make the recommendation, the board votes on it, we bring a resolution, you vote on that resolution—once the resolution is voted on by the board, then we will meet with the union leadership.” Union President Jay Hotchner then addressed the board: “The district, for the second year in a row, has 1) dismissed a plethora of contractual obligations surrounding lay-offs, and 2) has chosen to claim that (the Education Code) designates the process they’d like to pursue… (the negotiated contract and settlement agreement between the union and the district) clarifies exactly how

the union and the district are to work together on these lay-offs.” The board will resume discussion on the budget in future meetings.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Foley Claffey read a brief prepared statement, reiterating her commitment to quality education, student achievement and fairness while apologizing for the impact of previous comments. “At times, over the last two years, I have spoken from a place of anger and resentment… I am human, and humans are by nature flawed,” Foley Claffey said, continuing, “I have apologized whenever possible, in person.”

He worked in the hospitals in Hang Zhou, China, where he was exposed to pediatric massage, herbal treatment for stroke patients, and advanced acupuncture techniques. Reducing noise pollution

In his letter, “We are the stewards of the earth,” (Vol. 25, No. 22) letter writer, Darrell Johnston justifiably urges the community to move from gas powered landscape equipment to rechargeable battery-operated landscape equipment.

From a health standpoint, this move would help reduce carbon emissions and improve our air quality.

I would like to add another potential health benefit if we make this move: reduction of noise pollution. Batteryoperated landscape equipment is significantly quieter than gas powered ones.

This is important because the sounds in our environment have a direct impact on our health. According to the World Health Organization, “environmental noise exposure is responsible for a range of health effects, including increased risk of ischemic heart disease, as well as sleep disturbance, cognitive impairment among children, annoyance, stress-related mental health risks and tinnitus.” From car alarms and sirens, to leaf blowers and garbage trucks, the noise of our “quiet” little town can be significant. Since landscape equipment is so prevalent in our town, a switch to battery-operated equipment is a formidable and healthy step we can make.

Student-facing school employees are valuable

As a parent in the Carpinteria Unified School District, I am appalled to learn that there are several student-facing positions that are on the 2019-20 budget cutting block. The school board’s “purpose” statement says it will provide education and services, yet all of the cuts have to do with student-facing services and educators.

I think there are several positions at the top, that could be eliminated and save the district money. Why do we need an assistant to the superintendent, an administrative assistant, a human resources clerk, and so on? They are not student-facing and do not contribute to the education of our children.

I urge parents of children here at CUSD to see what is being proposed. I also urge them to talk to students and teachers, come and see how valuable these services are here. At the high school, a history teaching position is being cut, our librarian is being cut and our transportation bus drivers are being threatened.

Don’t cut school library staff

The Carpinteria Unified School District is again cutting staff positions. I am curious as to why the school board is considering cutting our school library staff in half, especially after last week’s glowing article, “Reading Is Key” (Diana Rigby, “From the Desk of the Superintendent,” CVN, Vol. 25, No. 23) linking literacy to student success in Carpinteria. The article extolled the CUSD libraries, their long hours and extra offerings.

As of today, March 4, the library/media technician at Canalino Elementary School is planning on retiring, and CUSD is not planning on replacing her. Instead, our school board is going to have the Aliso Elementary School librarian work both campuses. What does this mean for our students? Less time in the library, less time being read to, messy spaces, as books are not re-shelved correctly, likely no book fairs, and no Battle of the Books.

One person cannot plan/implement library goals as well as maintain two library spaces.

Likewise, the Carpinteria High School library/media technician position is proposed to be cut to four hours a day. The library is open before school, during all school periods, nutrition and lunch, and the number of students using the space is phenomenal. The current tech welcomes visitors (if you’d like, peek in one day to see for yourself). The library is the hub of CHS’ campus. By cutting the hours to half a day, there will be no more before-school hours, which is a safety issue. Where will our students hang-out in a supervised space before school? There will also be no access to computers or printers for students who rely on them to do their assignments.

Just what are CUSD’s priorities?

Because by cutting their library hours, it seems that student achievement and safety are not at the top of the list.

Test scores are down, feelings of hopelessness are up, what is going on at Carpinteria Middle School? Unfortunately, this is not new, but it is getting worse. I can only attest to what happened to my daughter, but I know from other parents that she is not an isolated case. As a sixth grader entering middle school, my daughter was self-confident, smart and social. after a few days at the middle school she was racially shamed, cyber bullied, pushed and threatened to be beat up on a regular basis. This went on from September until December, until we were forced to pull her out because we feared for her safety and well-being.

My daughter was targeted because she was racially different from the majority, that was considered “bad;” my daughter was targeted because she was smart, that was considered “bad;” my daughter was targeted because she stood up for her friends, and that was considered “bad.”

She is no longer at CMS, but her 11+ bullies suffered little or no consequences and are permitted to roam the halls to intimidate more children. What happened to “zero tolerance”? We asked for help, unfortunately, the leadership was unwilling or unable until the damage was done.

Proposed school cuts

I am very concerned with the proposed cuts to staff at our local schools and how it seems our district and board are “hiding” staff cuts. If you look at the Carpinteria Unified School District’s proposed budget cuts, we might be:

1. Losing our long-term bus drivers (they are being cut to six hours, losing full health coverage and will be asked to work split shifts).

2. Cutting our high school library tech to only four hours a day, causing this person to lose benefits, and to have a busy, well-loved feature of the high school closed for most of the morning.

3. Eliminating a night-shift custodian at the high school and eliminating all the night custodians at Canalino Elementary School. The district is proposing that CHS, Rincon, and Canalino sharing one custodian.

What the proposed cuts do not show are: 1. That there are five teachers retiring at the end of the year and on the high school side, none of these positions will be filled by new teachers, thereby raising class size.

2. The Canalino library tech is retiring and her position will not be filled. (The district’s plan is to have the current Aliso library tech split their time between the two schools). This will seriously affect the libraries at both schools, as it will be very hard to run two successful programs.

3. The High School will lose weight lifting and sports medicine (two very popular classes).

If the district needs to cut staff, I ask them why they are cutting people that interact with our kids on a daily basis?

The cuts above only hurt our community.

I ask that we all tell our school board what we think, write them, go to the meetings.

No fantasy land here

They will spend your tax money trying to find a crime to fit their pre-determined guilty verdict. They will provide free health care, free education and a guaranteed annual income even to those who won’t work. Regardless of your background, they want you to believe you are a victim. Even I, a white male (sorry, it’s the way I was born) should feel guilty because of “white privilege.” They refer to Scandinavia and Canada as successful anti-capitalist examples, seemingly not realizing that these countries have various successful versions of capitalism. They ignore references to Venezuela.

Despite being wealthy themselves, they view wealth as greed. They see America’s past as shameful despite that fact that multitudes of people want to come here.

They falsely portray American finance as a zero-sum game. They strive to erase portions of American history. They support the Green New Deal.

They are the progressive left. Included among them are presidential candidates Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, Kamala Harris and Bernie Sanders. I don’t believe these people are ignorant. I do believe they present fantasy-world ideas and con-

cepts to potential voters. You have every right to disagree with my thoughts, but I strongly encourage everyone to review these people and what the progressive left is proposing. For instance, I’d like Sanders to explain why his Medicarefor-all program was a total failure in his home state, Vermont. And we should note that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez thought that the three-billion-dollar tax incentive New York would provide Amazon was real money and offered suggestions as to how it should be spent.

Dunno about you, but I would want my children to believe that their future existence would be determined by hard work and effort. They live in the greatest country in the world, not fantasy land.

Government can’t afford the Green New Deal

One step of the Green New Deal offers everything from housing, medical care, guaranteed income, retirement and free education through college for all Americans. I’m not sure if that is guaranteed four years, six years or 10 years of free college. Gosh that sounds so virtuous.

Except for one tiny problem. The government has no money of its own. Nothing.

Let’s do a little critical thinking on one item. Unless professors are willing to teach for free, and union workers are willing to build universities without being paid for their time and effort, and suppliers are willing to not be paid for their materials, your education is not free. Even your free 13 years of education, kindergarten through 12th grade, from 5-years-old to 18-years-old, which we guarantee to every child, is not free.

Teachers don’t work for free, supplies don’t just appear for free, a campus isn’t built for free. Every single working person in this town, county, state and country has paid for your free education. Even if they have no children, the workers of our nation pay for this free education. And they do it without complaint.

Normally, how life works is we go to school and learn the basic skills of reading, writing, math, civics and critical thinking. These are the building blocks for you to take charge of your own lives.

These are “given” to you, but they are not free. Then you are to take your skills and become a working citizen of the greater community, not only having rights, but also having responsibilities. The government pays for nothing, because government has no money of its own. Every penny is taken from a working citizen.

Planning Commision holds off on highway widening decision, denies Concha Loma appeals CVN REPORT

The Planning Commission took action on several items at their March 4 meeting, including a 5-0 vote to approve the Carpinteria Baptist Church parsonage replacement; a 4-1 vote to approve (commissioner John Callendar dissenting) on the Sanctuary Beach Condominiums project; a 4-0 vote to deny the Hawkins Residence appeals (commissioner David Allen abstaining) and a 5-0 vote to continue to a future hearing for further discussion on the Caltrans Highway 101 HOV Lanes.

The commission unanimously approved a request for a Development Plan and Coastal Development Permit to allow for the removal and replacement of a parsonage for the Carpinteria Baptist Church, 800 Maple Ave. As part of the action, the commission granted a modification to the covered parking requirement for the new parsonage, allowing the church to provide two uncovered spaces rather than a garage in order to retain existing open space and better preserve the existing character and site integrity of the historic landmark church.

In a 4-1 vote, the Sanctuary Beach Condominiums project received re-approval of their Development Plan and Coastal Development Permit for the four-unit condominium project on the Norman’s Nursery tennis court property at 4295 Carpinteria Ave. The project had previously been approved by the commission in 2015 and granted a time extension in 2016; however, the entitlements expired before the

The Planning Commission considered two appeals of the Community Development director’s decision to approve a new residence for the vacant lot located at 5567 Calle Arena in the Concha Loma neigh-

borhood. Ultimately, the commission voted 4-0 to deny both appeals, thereby upholding the director’s approval of the project. The commission found the project to be consistent with all applicable design criteria and found that there were not sufficient grounds for the appeals.

The South Coast 101 HOV Lanes Project presented the commission with plans for the fourth and final phase of the proposed U.S. Highway 101 improvements. This phase would add a third vehicle lane to both the north- and southbound sides of the freeway from Bailard Avenue to the westernmost edge of the city near Cravens Lane. Caltrans is working to obtain a separate approval from the county of Santa Barbara to continue

the project up to Hot Springs Road near Montecito. In addition to the new HOV lanes, the project also includes various improvements to intersections adjacent to freeway on- and off-ramps, including Carpinteria Avenue at Reynolds Avenue, and Via Real at Santa Monica Road. After much deliberation, the commission voted to continue the matter to its next hearing for further discussion and to consider options for proposed improvements to the intersection at Carpinteria Avenue, Reynolds Avenue and the Highway 101 on- and off-ramps.

In particular, the commission expressed concern over the proposal for a fourway stop sign-controlled intersection at Reynolds Avenue.

Memorial Park olive tree damaged in heavy winds

A large olive tree in Memorial Park was mortally wounded in a wind storm in early February. The tree’s largest trunk completely blew down and the inside of the remaining portions of the tree had large areas of rotten wood, said Matt Roberts, director of Parks and Recreation for the city of Carpinteria. According to Roberts, “The remaining trunks were severely leaning over picnic tables. Consequently, it was deemed unsafe and had to be removed.” The tree›s wood chips were used to mulch the landscaping in the park, “so the tree continues to participate in the park›s kind nature, conserve moisture and reduce weeds,” said Roberts. On Arbor Day, March 14, at 11:30 a.m., the city will plant new trees to commemorate Carpinteria›s urban forest and to improve the park’s aesthetics and enjoyability. Letter Perfect’s strong Summerland stance

Letter Perfect, a stationery and fine gifts store, has occupied Summerland’s most beautiful downtown building, the former Just Folk, for several months now.

Locals are crossing their fingers that the unique store and gallery becomes a more permanent fixture.

Each month the store has staged an impressive art show in the spacious upstairs gallery, with openings that feature music, wine and appetizers. Summerland resident Leslie Person Ryan, Letter Perfect’s owner, has a deep interest in promoting art, lately specializing in art for a cause.

The current show, scheduled to run through March 15, is dedicated to the Santa Barbara American Heart Association. Twenty artists, including artists from Carpinteria and Summerland, contributed works of art “inspired by love,” with a percentage of the profits from sales going to the Heart Association.

Leslie is a passionate Summerland promoter, and if enthusiasm is a measure, her efforts to boost the downtown’s flagging viability should yield results. A Summerland theme pervades her store. “Every day is summer” is the motto she’s developed for a line of goods featuring the Summerland name and a big yellow sun.

Napkins, cards, t-shirts for young and old and even specially made shortbread cookies bear the logo. Plus, my favorite, a small box of CaliBressan chocolates specially curated for Summerland.

Leslie’s especially proud of the latest addition to her growing inventory: a custom pottery line created by Jason Sanovich, a Mendocino artist. The ceramicist is producing tumblers, vases, mugs, bowls and plates in white porcelain and dark clay, many bearing Letter Perfect’s Summerland sun logo.

The building on Lillie Ave. is a big space to fill, and Leslie is doing her best to pack it with goods and art shows. So far, it’s been a month-to-month endeavor, but Leslie is working hard to secure a longer-term lease.

Summerland photographer Reeve Woolpert has been spending his days wandering the pristine environs of the Nature Conservancy’s newest treasure, the Dangermond Preserve. The 24,000- acre preserve, donated to the Conservancy in 2017 by Jack and Laura Dangermond, encompasses the former Bixby Ranch, including Point Conception.

Preserve director Michael Bell spotted Reeve’s nature photographs on sets of notecards created for the Gaviota Coast Conservancy and was impressed. He hired Reeve to develop a series of images for note cards to be used to thank Conservancy donors, helpers and volunteers. According to Reeve’s contract, his photographs may also be used for other publicity purposes.

Bell couldn’t have picked a better person for the job. For Reeve, who has long specialized in taking pictures of wild, untrammeled land, photography takes on a spiritual aspect. He says he takes picture of what captures his imagination and looks for what he calls “the stages of history” in a place—how land forms have changed, plant communities have advanced and receded, how animals and humans have impacted each other and the land.

For his current project, Reeve’s subject matter may range from taking photos of old U.S.G.S. benchmarks he’s discovered to crystal clear water in a tide pool to the footprints of coyotes and wild boar. He described to me an old fencepost about to tumble into the sea. That post, he said, was repurposed from a former railroad tie that had once been a tree. He says he especially appreciates the “resourcefulness of old ways.”

Reeve says he is still coming to grips with the great privilege he’s experiencing as he walks and photographs the wild coastland that has survived largely undisturbed for so long. He’s a close observer, studying the environs, waiting for certain times of day, cloud cover or sunlight, before taking his shots. He will take many, many photographs before winnowing them down to a few. No sunsets included, he said. He takes pictures of “the sun’s light on the world.”

Okay, this is a silly nitpick left out of my last column. I bought one of those big plastic bins of spring mix lettuce at Costco. The label advertised 22 different kinds of greens might be in the mix. My box mostly consisted of the tough, fringy variety of lettuce. I recognized the mizuna, which tends to be a little tough (websites recommend cooking), but tango, tatsoi and lolla rosa? Were those really lettuces

After research, I determined that most of my lettuce must have been tango, another fringed variety and distinguished from red mizuna by being green. You can’t fit a whole leaf of either of these in your mouth without a bit of stuffing, leaving the fringy part or the tough white stem draped over your lips.

I’m pretty sure my mix contained no lolla rosa, which is described as magenta in color. Or tatsoi, also known as Chinese flat cabbage. Pictures of that lettuce looked tender and succulent, and nothing tender made it into my bin. There was

no romaine or green chard or baby butter or any of the familiar lettuces either.

Maybe it’s a winter thing, with only the toughest varieties surviving the cold. I should have just steamed the whole batch and served it with soy sauce and Sriracha.

One good thing: A hot shower on a cold day.

Natural History Notes

The pup population exploded last week, and a number of watchers were excited to see a birth or very newborn pups. Delivery is often very rapid, and often there are no signs of impending delivery. The placenta follows within minutes to over a half hour later, usually attracting a flock of seagulls.

Blood on the sand is another indication of a recent birth. Almost all births occur onshore. Premature or very early season pups may have a whitish coat called lanugo, which is lost in utero before normal births. Newborn pups retain the umbilicus for about five days; it changes from pink to grey. Nursing may begin very quickly, and pups can swim at birth. Moms and pups do a lot of nose tapping, grooming and swimming with the pup piggyback-riding on mom.

Q&A with Carpinteria’s new veterinarian

Dr. Oliver joins Animal Medical Clinic team

By Lea Boyd Animal Medical Clinic in Carpinteria recently announced the addition of Dr. Adrienne Oliver to its staff. Dr. Oliver brings nearly 10 years of experience in animal medicine to the full-service veterinary clinic.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Oliver on our team,” said clinic owner Dr. Scott Smith. “Her positive energy, compassion and technical skills have made her a good fit here at Animal Medical Clinic. I believe our clients, and of course our patients, will benefit from this new addition to our clinic.”

Dr. Smith purchased Animal Medical Clinic in 1991 and has practiced as its sole veterinarian for 27 years. The health and wellness of patients are always the top priority at the busy office. Dr. Oliver’s professional standards are closely aligned with those of the clinic, delivering a high level of compassionate care that Dr. Smith’s clients regularly rely upon. Dr. Oliver’s arrival will expand the clinic’s ability to see clients more readily and accommodate emergencies.

An early childhood love of animals and science set Dr. Oliver on her course to becoming a veterinarian. She earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine from University of California, Davis in 2010 after completing a bachelor’s degree in biomedical science from Texas A&M and a master’s degree in physiology from Cal State East Bay. Dr. Oliver has treated all types of pets with all types of ailments, and her particular areas of expertise are soft tissue surgery, dentistry and internal medicine.

Upon graduating from UC Davis, Dr. Oliver has been raising a family in Carpinteria while practicing as a veterinarian in Santa Barbara. She jumped at the opportunity to join Dr. Smith, a wellrespected industry veteran, when a position opened locally. “Working with such a talented colleague and professional staff in the town that I live in and love is a dream come true,” said Dr. Oliver.

“I am looking forward to meeting more furry friends and their owners at Animal Medical Clinic and providing the quality care that every pet deserves.”

Since dogs and cats can’t explain how they feel, how do you determine what is ailing them?

That’s part of the job I really enjoy, though it can be the most challenging as well. To get to the bottom of the “mystery,” I rely on owners’ input, my intuition, a thorough physical exam and appropriate diagnostics following our initial evaluation. After performing these steps, we usually have a pretty good idea of what’s going on or at least a good starting point.

What advice do you give pet owners to keep their animals healthy?

An annual exam. Animals can be very good at hiding their ailments until a seemingly simple problem progresses into a more advanced state. Early detection and proactive care can greatly increase the longevity and quality of your animal’s life.

What is the hardest thing you face in your job?

The hardest part of my job is delivering news that a family’s loved one has an incurable condition. In these situations, we work together to decide what is the kindest route of treatment.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is when a pet’s health turns around after treatment. It’s incredibly satisfying to share that news with clients. I feel lucky to be able to make a difference in people’s

lives with something as special as a pet.

Some animals get stressed going to the vet’s office. How do you calm them and help them to feel comfortable?

I treat every animal as an individual and try to assess what makes them comfortable. It could be treats, gentle petting, having them perform tricks, ensuring the animal can always see his or her owner, etc. In addition, I rely on the owner’s input on how to further calm their pets.

What’s an issue that many pet owners don’t realize they should see a vet for?

Dental disease. Bacteria in the tartar doesn’t stay isolated to just the mouth.

In addition to the obvious risks of tooth root abscesses and gingivitis, the bacteria circulate systemically and can lead to heart disease, liver disease and myriad other conditions.

What is the strangest animal and/or case you have treated?

We had a three-month-old puppy that ingested 14 pennies and a dime and subsequently developed anemia due to zinc toxicity. That was certainly a new one for me!

Have you seen changes in veterinary medicine during your decade of experience?

As with all medicine, veterinary medicine is always in flux. One of the biggest changes that I’ve seen is the advancement in anesthesia protocols.

Do you have your own pets?

I have a two-year-old retriever named Yeti; two cats, Mr. Beezemeyer and Shredder; four fish and two young boys, Noah and Finn.

Arts Center nears remodel completion

Photos by Robin KaRlsson Rebecca Stebbins, executive director of the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center, reveals the modern new doorway to the remodeled facility at 865 Linden Ave. The exterior walls have also been resurfaced and painted, hiding the brown faux brick design that had been held over from the former building owner, Cajun Kitchen. Stebbins notes, “Our board and staff members and many volunteers have worked hard on this project, and we are so excited to soon open our doors to the entire community, to invite them to come together to celebrate the arts.”

Just over a year ago, the Arts Center gutted the interior of the 1920s building, preserving a bit of history while bringing the site into the 21st century. As with all old buildings, there were surprises along the way, said Stebbins, including interior walls that were not affixed to the foundation and the absence of any steel reinforcement in the slab foundation. Numerous modifications were made to bring the building into compliance with earthquake, energy and Americans with Disabilities Act standards. The building will be energy efficient, with automatic lighting systems, proper insulation, windows and doors, and solar panels on the roof.

The final phase of construction for the center involves updating the outdoor courtyard, site of many past events and many more to come. The complete project has received approximately $500,000 in in-kind donations of labor and materials.

Carpinteria Valley Water District receives high marks from independent audit

By William armshaW Board member Shirley Johnson called for expanded professional development and education opportunities for both the public and the board at the Feb. 27 Carpinteria Valley Water District Board of Directors meeting. Listing a host of educational resources, Johnson urged that board members be compensated for independent study programs ranging from local university engagement to online professional webinars, and that the number of meetings compensated for (currently limited to six per month) be increased to 10. Johnson’s plea to “encourage directors to be in touch with the public at large” struck a chord with board members and staff, with General Counsel Roger Meyers allowing that the CVWD can “devise a program that fits the concerns” expressed.

The Feb. 27 meeting opened with the independent auditor’s report on the district for fiscal year 2017-18. The auditor’s report, delivered by Brown Armstrong Accountancy Corp., issued the CVWD a “clean opinion,” the highest clearance possible. Despite “the bit of ‘getting to know you’” involved in a new audit, Brown Armstrong saluted the “systems of internal control” involved in CVWD spending.

Board President Polly Holcolmbe stated the board “like(s) a new pair of eyes to look at controls and processes.”

The board turned next to the Intergrade Regional Water Management Plan (IRWP), which has afforded $32 million in funding to Carpinteria-area projects since 2007. After the passage of Proposition 1 in 2016, some $7.3 million has been made available for funding, including funding the Carpinteria Advanced Purification Project (CAPP), a geophysical study of sea water intrusion into area wells, and the Casitas/CVWD Intertie project.

Holcolmbe, declaring it a “win-win,” motioned to pass the IRWP authorization and the vote was carried 4-0.

Discussion then turned to a California Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) and FEMA grant for $21 million. Problems with the grant application led General Manager Robert McDonald to state “we’ve had a run of bad luck with grant applications over the last couple of years.” Johnson asked if “you have a crystal ball” to ascertain future grant responses. While declining any specific oracular powers, McDonald responded “the likelihood is good.”

Matters heated up as the board turned to the question of compensation. Johnson, in a substantive presentation, urged that the compensation structure, unchanged since the ‘90s, keep pace with the cost of living. As board member Matthew Roberts pointed out, meeting compensation “has been that way since the board was formed,” despite the fact that the complexity and quantity of board meetings has

The meeting concluded with a series of General Manager reports. Perhaps lending credence to Johnson’s drive for greater engagement, Robert McDonald

reported that “unfortunately, we didn’t get a big showing” for the Jan. 24 Preparation and Scoping Committee. Board members questioned McDonald about possible negative ocean impacts derived from the brine pumped out by desalinization plants after “super-purification.”

brine, to which McDonald responded, “no one has come up with a ‘Eureka’ moment, but it’s something to stay tuned to.”

The general manager ended the meeting with the prospect of higher water levels due to a very wet January and February. Surface water levels as well as Lake Cachuma volume showed notable increases, with conservation efforts showing positive effects.

Bringing pollinators home: Insect population decline and what we can do

recognition of the outsized impact humans now have on earth processes. We are in the midst of the sixth great spasm of extinction to convulse the world thus far, and the first that is distinctly humancaused. the loss of species diminishes us all, creating a world that is less diverse, less robust, less complex and unique. there are also very practical reasons for concern. insects and other invertebrates are essential to all life as we know it. insects are important decomposers and recyclers, turning dead plant and animal material into living soil upon which all life is based. according to the Xerces society for invertebrate Conservation, insect pollinators are necessary for the reproduction of over 85 percent of the world’s flowering plants, including more than two-thirds of the world’s food crop species. in the united states, the economic value of insect pollination is $3 billion per year. the wild world also depends upon pollinators and other insects as “keystone species” binding whole ecosystems together. insect pollination bears wild fruit and seed, the diet of approximately 25 percent of all birds as well as many mammals of all sizes. insects themselves are also an important food source for birds and animals. the worldwide disappearance of insects is the beginning of an alarming cascade of species extinctions. the challenges the natural world faces are great, almost overwhelming. it’s important to remember that the choices we make have an impact beyond our own lives, and there is much we can do. if you are able, support diverse, small-scale, organic agriculture with your purchasing power. Here in the Carpinteria Valley, we are lucky to be able to support our farmerfriends in growing year-round produce without the use of chemicals, and with wild edges of crop areas set aside for native pollinators.

Limit the use of chemicals in your home and landscape. invertebrates are particularly sensitive to many chemicals. even those not sold as “pesticides” can have detrimental effects on insect populations. use preventative care, good garden timing, and organic treatments for the health of all your landscape.

Consider planting a biodiverse “pollinator garden,” with native plants blooming continuously throughout the growing season for shelter and forage for insects.

Monarch butterflies need narrow-leaf milkweed (asclepias fascicularis) to survive. showier, non-native species, often planted with the best intentions, are actually detrimental to monarch health and reproduction. tropical milkweed species do not die back in winter, allowing a toxic monarch parasite to persist on food plants, increasing the spread of the disease. this is just one example of the importance of growing native species for

Hidden along the coast of Carpinteria stands a grove of eucalyptus trees that provide a sheltering winter home for monarch butterflies gathering from points throughout the western united states. early in the morning, giant clusters of monarchs huddle together, hundreds or thousands softly fluttering, waiting for the air to warm their flight muscles.

As the day’s warmth grows, butterflies open their wings, catching the rising thermals that send them aloft seeking food and mates. the monarch butterfly life cycle is intimately linked to the seasons and landmarks of coastal California, where the entire Western monarch population over-winters in warm, sheltered spots. the lengthening days of spring trigger dispersal across the West, as far as the flanks of the western Rockies. Breeding adults are in search of their favored food plant, milkweed, to lay their eggs. several generations hatch throughout spring and summer, until fall’s generation returns to the same grove where their ancestors spent last winter. No one yet knows how monarchs return to these ancestral sites. and we may never know, because monarch butterflies are experiencing a steep decline (99.4 percent since the 1980s) that may force their population below the number of individuals needed to maintain the species.

CVYAA Junior Warriors 2019 season begins CVN REPORT • PHOTOS BY ROSANA SWING

The Carpinteria Valley Youth Athletic Association (CVYAA) begins its fourth season of the Junior Warriors Youth Football Program. The non-profit organization aims to create a safe and structured environment for kids to learn the game of football, teach sportsmanship, gain game fundamentals and build teamwork skills needed on and off the field, according to the CVYAA mission statement.

With the community’s support and fundraising, the Junior Warriors were able to provide Guardian Caps to every tackle football player last season. Guardian Caps are a soft-shell helmet cover that reduces the impact of collisions up to 33 percent.

As a result, CVYAA reports that zero concussions were sustained last season.

This season, the Junior Warriors board has had some changing of the guard and with that comes fresh ideas and a re-energized perspective. New to their executive board positions are Melissa Angeles as president, Kristyn Whittenton as vice president, Amber Shields as secretary, Natali Rivera as treasurer and Tony Jimenez as athletic director. The 11-person volunteer board expressed their commitment to growing the program to include every child who wants to play football and cheer.

Co-ed flag football begins practices the week of April 29 with Sunday games starting on May 19 and ending mid-June.

Team divisions for flag will follow Gold Coast Youth Football League (GCYFL) age classes which will allow the Mighty Might (ages 6-8) and Bantam (ages 8-10) teams to play traditional flag games, while the older teams will play 7-on-7. “Splitting flag teams to shadow our tackle season allows players to play against teams in the same age and ability group,” said Jimenez.

League teams in Fillmore, Carpinteria and Oxnard will take turns hosting, allowing each team to play two games every Sunday. Registration is $75 and all players receive a uniform.

Following the flag season, the Junior Warriors begin tackle and cheer programs that run mid-July to November.

“We’re very excited for our fourth season of tackle and cheer,” said Angeles. “Our goal this season is to give every child an opportunity to play tackle or cheer for free by means of our raffle ticket program.

Junior Warriors co-ed tackle football teams are apart of the GCYFL and play eight games throughout the regular season, traveling from Santa Barbara to Santa Clarita and playing home games at Carpinteria High School.

February 28 – The Carpinteria High School softball team beat longtime rival Bishop Diego, 15-2. In the first inning, sophomore Kenna Mayer doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring one run. Rebecca Bray, Isabel Studt, Madison Mora, Victoria Gonzalez, Marisa Mata and Angelina Torres each drove in runs during the fifth inning as the Warriors scored six runs. Senior Kylie Barber started the game pitching for Carpinteria, allowing one hit and two runs over one inning, striking out one and walking zero, but Gonzalez ended up the winning pitcher. Studt, Jauslyn Richardson, Bray, Mata, Nina Sturdivan, and Mora each collected multiple hits for the Warriors with Studt leading the way with three-in-three at-bats. The Warriors are overall 2-2 on the year and have yet to play a Citrus Coast League game.

Boys volleyball

March 1 and 2 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team competed in the Camarillo tournament over the weekend, losing the first day to Saugus and Camarillo, but beating St Francis. The Warriors entered the consolation bracket the second day, and lost to South Pasadena, but beat both Buena and Pacifica in pool play. Then in the playoffs Carpinteria again bested Buena 25-12, before losing 25-16 in the “Competitor” (consolation) finals to South Pasadena who had beaten the Warriors earlier in the tourney. Carpinteria finished second in the “Competitor” division.

March 1 – The Carpinteria High School swim team visited Hueneme for the Raider Relays, where the team scored fourth overall. The Warriors won the girls four x 100-meter Individual Medley and the boys four x 50-meter backstroke. The boys and girls teams both won the four x 50-meter breaststroke. The boys and girls also emerged victorious in the four x 100, and the girls Four x 100 Medley Relay. “The Warriors returned proudly with medals around their necks, motivated for the season to come,” said Swim coach Sergio Castaneda. “Special recognition goes to the five boys on the team: Augie Sheaffer, Beau Persoon, David Kinghorn, JR Hajducko and Nathan Endow, who won every event they participated in,” added Castaneda.

Baseball

March 1 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team dropped their first game of the season at Santa Paula at the hands of the Cardinals, 2-0. Chase Mayer suffered the loss for the Warriors as he surrendered one hit (a bunt single), while striking out six and walking two. Mayer also picked four Cardinal base runners off first base in the game. The Cards and the Warriors are even in the Citrus Coast League standings with records of 2-1. “There were absolutely some bright spots in the game, we pitched very well, and our plate approach was the best it has been,” said Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney. The Warriors committed six errors in the game which helped Santa Paula to score both their runs in the bottom of the third.

Track and Field

March 1 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team swept Foothill Tech in their meet with the boys beating the Dragons 56-39, and the girls also besting their girls squad 79-36. Sophomore Vincent Rinaldi swept the 100 and 200-meter, his time of 22.84 seconds in the 200 beat his older brother, Victor Rinaldi, who had a time of 23.53. Victor Rinaldi won the 400 with a time of 51.91. Isaac De Alba executed a throw of 112 feet-nine inches in winning the discus and also won the shot put event. Josie Gordon swept the 100 and 200 for the Warrior girls. The Alvarez twins, Savannah and Shaylah, won the long jump and triple jumps, respectively. Caton Pettine won the pole vault with a clearance of eight feet. Sallury Hernandez swept the shot put and discus, recording a throw of 94 feet-one inch in the discus.

Boys golf

February 28 – The Carpinteria High School boys golf team in the first Citrus Coast League golf match placed fourth out of six schools, scoring a team total of 336. Tristan Kelly led Carpinteria with the highest score in the weather-shortened, 12-hole match with a 63. Gage Dining was next with a 64. “Our basketball heroes Jose Gonzalez and Caleb Nangle were rusty as they had just ended that season a day before, after a few more practices they will be ready to help the team,” explained Warriors coach Chris Cochrane of his two players who had just finished playing in the CIF State Basketball Tournament. Fillmore won the match, as their low scorer Ryan Gonzalez shot 59, leading the team to a total of 315. “I was very pleased with second year player Tristan Kelly … Gage Dinning was also consistent and will improve,” said Cochrane.

March 4 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team won their inaugural Citrus Coast League match, beating Hueneme 15-3. In doubles, Carlos Costilla/ Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson went 3-0, while Kirby Zapata/Solomon NahooikaikaAnderson went 2-0. number-one’s Ian McCurry/Esteban Zapata finished the day 2-1. In singles, Myles Morgan and Austin Stone each went 3-0, and number-one Corban Pampel finished the day 1-1. “I was really impressed with Myles today, he had a “Golden Set” (did not drop a single point) today in his first match,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Carpinteria is now 4-1 overall, and 1-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

Baseball

March 4 – The Carpinteria High School baseball team connected on 18 hits on Monday in a 17-2 non-league win over visiting Villanova. Senior left-hander Noah Nuño started for the Warriors, allowing no hits, while striking out six over four innings. Miles Souza had three hits with two RBI and scored four runs. Chase Mayer had three hits, two RBI and scored twice. nuño also contributed two hits, two RBI and scored two runs.

Cate School

February 27 – The Cate School boys lacrosse team captured an 8-7 victory over Simi Valley. Up 7-1 with under two minutes in the first half, it took a final save by Peter Bulkley Armas who had 11 total on the day to seal the win for Cate. After attackman Peter Firestone finished a no-look feed from Xander Murray to put Cate up 7-1 in the second quarter, Simi scored three goals in just over a minute to bring the score to 7-4 at halftime. In the second half, Parker Bowlin’s goal made it 8-6, and Simi followed that with one of their own, and thus the final score of 8-7 was decided with six minutes still to play. “Two good defensive stands led by Will Bouma, Adlai Hester, James Marin, and an 11th save by Armas, gave Cate the win,” explained Rams coach andrew MacDonnell. Cate’s current record is 2-0.

Swimming

February 27 – The Cate School swim team traveled to the Ventura aquatics Center to compete against Tri-Valley league foe Foothill Tech, with both boys and girls teams falling to the Dragons. The Ram girls lost their meet 105 to 60, while the boys fell 9859. In the Girls 200 Meter Freestyle, Anna DiSorbo had a Season’s Best (SB) time and in the same event for the boys, Kaiser Ke also had an SB with a four-second reduction.

In the 200 Individual Medley, the girls Ophelia Ke had an SB with an eight-second drop, and Victor Vazquez finished first for the boys. In the 50 Freestyle, for the girls, Lulu Blau had an SB, and for the boys, Marcos Brasil finished first with another SB and a CIF consideration time. Cole Hillyer got his SB also. In the 100 Butterfly for the girls, Alekha Rao attained an SB with a two-second drop, and for the boys, Jet Ochoa also achieved an SB. In the 100 Free for the girls, Nili Silverman achieved an SB and Meena Baher met an SB and a three-second time drop. Meanwhile, two of the boys, Brasil and Zhao had SBs. In the 500 Free for the girls, DiSorbo finished first with an SB and a 10-second drop, and for the boys, Ochoa attained an SB with a 12-second drop. In the 200 Free Relay, for the girls team, Grace Johnson, Ke, Rao and DiSorbo swam their SB. On the boys squad, Brasil, Ke, Ochoa and Vasquez finished first. In the 100 Backstroke, the girls’ Ke nabbed an SB with a six-second drop. In the 100 Breaststroke, the boys’ Nieman had his SB. In the 400 Free Relay, the girls’ Silverman, DiSorbo, Johnson and Rao attained their SB with a five-second drop, while the boys’ Ochoa, Ke, Vasquez and Brasil achieved their SB with a 19 second drop.

February 28 – The Cate School girls lacrosse team went against newbury Park, dropping a 15-9 decision. Cate came out ahead in the second half, outscoring newbury Park, 5-4. “Composed, fast and smart on defense, Piper Brooks caused six turnovers, and often covered two newbury players,” said Rams coach Renee Mack. “Kenzie Davidson also played well on defense,” added Mack. Lily Riehl had three goals for Cate, as did Daphne McKeefry. Maddie Erickson and Imano Oseso each had a goal also. The next game is on March 21 at home against San Marcos.

Rotary Club Noon recently visited Rose Lane Studios and were given a tour of the state-of-the-art media production facilities. The Studio has seen many changes and upgrades since its ownership by local artist Jim Messina. To help celebrate the Rotary’s upcoming Talent Showcase, Rose Lane Studios has generously donated one full day’s use of their recording facility to produce a recording for the most outstanding audition. The winner will be announced the night of the 10th anniversary of the Talent Showcase, to be held at the Alcazar Theatre on March 23 at 7 p.m.

Speaking to Rotary Club Morning, Deputy District Attorney Vicki Johnson said, “Currently, the three top scams in Santa Barbara County are purse snatching (especially in grocery stores), dumpster diving and phishing.” Purse snatching is often done by out-of-town teams of three, explained Johnson. Rotarias learn about Falun Gong

Dr. Wen Chen spoke at Rotary Club Morning on Chinese culture and the human rights movement which has grown as a result of the problem of forced organ harvesting. Dr. Chen also introduced a practice called Falun Gong, which is practiced by approximately 17 million people in China. California Gold Ballroom Dance Studio showed off the school’s choreography at the “Ballroom Blitz” mixer and performance hosted by the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce on Feb. 27. The studio, located at 4647 Carpinteria Ave., is an elegant new fixture in town with a world class floating dancefloor imported from Denmark, wall sconces, Swarovski crystal chandeliers, custom lighting, sound system and a live-stream movie theater. The studio offers all-level ballroom dance instruction, master classes, performances, competitions and social dances.

Carpinteria Middle Schooler heads to state championship spelling bee

Conrad Stinson of Carpinteria Middle School won second-place in the eighth-grade division of the Santa Barbara County Spelling Bee on Feb. 28. His correct spelling of the word “annihilate” earned Stinson a spot in the 2019 State Junior High Spelling Bee for grades seven through nine, to be held May 4 at Miller Creek Middle School in San Rafael. Victoria Chen, a seventh grader from Goleta Valley Jr. High, took firstplace by correctly spelling “acquiesced,” and third-place was won by Aria Nafziger, an eighth grader from Our Lady of Mt. Carmel with the word “emollient.” County Superintendent of Schools Susan Salcido said, “It takes courage to compete publicly, and we are truly impressed with the level of engagement, preparation and excitement around this countywide bee. We also want to express our gratitude to the many volunteers, partners, parents and schools who participated in ways big and small.”

20/20 program sees clear improvement

Canalino Elementary School reading intervention teacher Vi White launched the 20/20 program with community volunteers and nine students in the first through fourth grades. Reading aloud from books that interest them, students are paired with an adult who listens, supports and discusses the content. Research shows that students who read to an adult one-on-one for 20 minutes each day for 20 days can raise their reading level one full school year. Principal Jamie Persoon expressed deep gratitude to the community volunteers, and the tireless advocacy of Vi White for the completion of the recent 20-day round.

Carpinteria High School Interact Club to donate shoes to children and adults in need

In 2013, the World Bank counted 767 million people living in poverty who couldn’t afford education and basic articles of clothing like shoes. To help meet people’s basic needs, the Carpinteria High School Interact Club is holding a shoe drive in partnership with Samaritan’s Feet International, a non-profit organization that “serves and inspires hope in children by providing shoes as the foundation to a spiritual and healthy life resulting in the advancement of education and economic opportunities.”

Interact Club, partnering with the Rotary Club, functions to put “Service Above Self,” and is calling on the Carpinteria community to donate any spare, new or gently used shoes to help children and adults in need in the United States and beyond. The shoes may be in any size or color, however, the organization is specifically seeking children’s athletic shoes with a preference for new or gently used footwear. The Howard School is setting a new standard for engaging students with science in the spring semester. Lower grades were treated to some seriously silly science experiments at the school’s Science Expo and on March 1, upper grade students participated in a juried science fair, showcasing their scientific methods and skills. Car • PET • teria Siam Elephant staff visits the Grand Canyon

The staff from the well-loved Thai restaurant Siam Elephant on Linden Avenue made a journey to the Grand Canyon with a copy of the Coastal View News. While clear winter skies provided excellent views, the cold desert air had the Siam crew missing the usually mild weather of home (even if recent temperatures have been well-below normal).

Meet Digby, a part-time ball fetcher and part-time model. When he is in trouble his people call him Digby Kevin. He loves all foods except for carrots and he adores balls. Digby’s brother is Hamilton, aka Hammy B, and when he wears a shirt he goes by Stanley. Hamilton is a picky boy and does not play with toys or do any tricks other than being a complete angel. He can be shady at times, but that’s because he knows what he wants. Hamilton loves sauce. He is the sauce boss. Both boys were adopted from Dog Adoption and Welfare Group (DAWG) in Goleta.
