The Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce will hold the 63rd Annual Carpinteria Community Awards Gala on Saturday, March 12, at Rincon Beach Club.

The Community Awards Gala honors individuals whose contributions have enhanced the Carpinteria community. As part of this year’s celebration, two educators will receive funding for classroom supplies; a Jr. Carpinterian of the Year and two runners-up will be awarded scholarships; merit awards will be given to volunteers from the Carpinteria community, service clubs and various nonprofits; and the Carpinterian of the Year will be named.

“We are excited to celebrate Carpinteria and the people who make it so special. This event is an opportunity to recognize individual efforts and a commitment to serve.

Firefighters take stair challenge for LLS research

Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District firefighters Brian Bull, Mark Blattler, Kenan Marting and Johan Nilsson will participate in the 31st annual LLS Firefighter Stairclimb on Sunday, March 13, in Seattle.

The Carpinteria team, led by team captain Johan Nilsson, will help raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). “We are raising funds in the name of funding and finding a cure,” said Marting.

“We will be racing up 69 stories of the Columbia Center wearing fire turnouts and breathing off an air pack. This competition brings in firefighters from across the country to raise money to help battle cancer.”

The last LLS stairclimb was held in 2020 remotely with firefighters simulating the climb at Rincon Fitness due to the pandemic.

“We are excited to be able to travel this year to Seattle to compete with some of the fittest firefighters in the country who are all coming together for a worthy cause,” Marting added. “Every dollar we raise fuels the best-in-class research and care that LLS delivers to the 1.4 million people in America with blood cancer. This cause has personally affected our firefighters and their families and we are glad to be a part of fighting for a cure.”

County water agency holds waterwise landscaping contest

The Santa Barbara County Water Agency and participating local water providers have announced the opening of applications for the 2022 WaterWise Garden Recognition Contest. The annual contest recognizes residents of Santa Barbara County who have attractive, water-efficient landscapes. Residents can apply for the contest online to compete for an agency award and the countywide grand prize. Winners will have their gardens featured online and receive an engraved stone boulder.

Water Agency manager Matt Young said, “This has been our second consecutive extremely dry winter, with rainfall currently 53% of our annual average. Installing and maintaining water-efficient gardens is a great way to conserve this precious resource.”

Residents of single-family homes are eligible to apply if they reside in areas served by the Carpinteria Valley Water District the Vandenberg Village Community Services District, the Montecito Water District, and the cities of Santa Barbara, Solvang and Buellton.

School mask mandate ends after March 11 Governor Gavin Newsom announced Monday that beginning March 12, masks are no longer required in school and childcare facilities, although they are still “strongly recommended.”

Masks are still required on public transit and while visiting health care facilities, emergency shelters, correctional facilities, homeless shelters and long-term care facilities. The statewide mask mandate also ended Tuesday, with masking no longer required – but strongly recommended – indoors for unvaccinated individuals.

These moves come nearly a month after Governor Newsom lifted the indoor mask mandate for vaccinated residents.

Santa Barbara County rescinded its own indoor mask mandate on Feb. 16.

Newsom announced this shift alongside Oregon Governor Kate Brown and Washington Governor Jay Inslee. Both states’ indoor mask requirements will also end after March 11.

“California continues to adjust our policies based on the latest data and science, applying what we’ve learned over the past two years to guide our response to the pandemic,” Governor Gavin Newsom said. “Masks are an effective tool to minimize spread of the virus and future variants, especially when transmission rates are high. We cannot predict the future of the virus, but we are better prepared for it and will continue to take measures rooted in science to keep California moving forward.”

Oregon Governor Brown and Washington Governor Inslee made similar announcements.

“On the West Coast, our communities and economies are linked. Together, as we continue to recover from the Omicron surge, we will build resiliency and prepare for the next variant and the next pandemic,” Brown said.

Santa Barbara County reported a drastic drop in cases last week, with a case rate of 13.96 per 100,000 residents. Between Feb. 18 and Feb. 24, the county reported 810 new cases, for 615 active cases and 84,173 total cases.

That same week saw 47 hospitalizations, with 11 in the ICU, and 10 deaths.

So far, 649 total deaths due to Covid-19 have been reported.

As of Monday, 67.7% of the county is fully vaccinated. The county reported 26 new cases on Monday, with zero new cases in the south county unincorporated area, which includes Montecito, Summerland and the city of Carpinteria.

City staff continues to analyze the sole bid for the Carpinteria Skate Park to determine financially feasible construction options, Public Works Director ohn lasin told the council Monday.

The council opted to defer any decisions until the ne t city council meeting on March 1 , although they told the city staff option accepting the bid is the most preferable. f they do accept the current bid, the council discussed potentially

splitting the e tra 00,000 between city funds and further fundraising from the foundation.

Carty asked staff if it was possible to have the sole bidder reevaluate the cost of the pro ect; to follow that path, city legal counsel ena Shoaf cos said the council would have to re ect the current bid, and the current bidder would go through the public bidding process again.

“Before anything like that could happen, we would have to take one of these actions that are spelled out in the public contracting code,” she said. “Because this is considered a public pro ect under the public contracting code, we have to

comply with special procedures in order to receive bids for this work.”

Carpinteria Skatepark Foundation members made it clear that option abandoning the pro ect was not an option. lasin also said option is not a recommended pursuit. “ think about the generations of kids who have ended up falling through our cracks. These are middle school kids who don t have anywhere to go after school, and they end up becoming in the court of public opinion truants,” Foundation member ulia Mayer told the council on Monday.

“The longer we take to get this pro ect to the part where we re building, that s ust time for kids,” she added.

City staff will return to the council ne t meeting with more information on the council s options.

Council celebrates Women’s History Month with special designation

The Carpinteria City Council designated March 2022 as Women s istory Month in the city of Carpinteria on Monday, surrounded by members of the Women Making Change committee.

The resolution to designate March as women s history month notes that women s contributions in history have “often been overlooked and undervalued,” and its passing was met with thunderous applause in the council chamber.

Per the resolution, the Women Making Change committee honors “the women who fought to win suffrage rights for women and the bravery of Black women who fought for decades after to e ercise their right to vote, and to support the continuing efforts of women in upholding voting and human rights for all mericans.”

The resolution also references the lcazar Theatre s Women s istory Month program. n the spirit of women making change in the community, the theatre will host a number of women-focused events throughout the month of March. fter reading aloud the resolution, Councilmember Carty commended the resolution s writers. “Whoever wrote this, ust wanted to say it s incredible,” he said.

District-based map approval set for March 28

City staff presented a modified districting map for Plan , known as Plan -2, at the council s Monday meeting. Following council feedback at the last meeting, city staff created Plan -2, which keeps district D north of the ighway 101 boundary.

City legal counsel Shoaf cos confirmed there are no legal issues with approving the map, in response to council uestions. “ The maps have taken into account the different considerations,” Shoaf cos said.

Councilmember atalia larcon and ice Mayor l Clark re uested tweaks to -2, with Clark noting concerns that parts of Plan -2 “looks like gerrymandering.” But Councilmembers Roy Lee and Clark said they liked the Plan -2 as is, and Mayor Wade omura noted the public approval of -2 seen through public comments.

The council voted 3-2 with larcon and Clark dissenting to accept the staff report and to vote on final approval for Plan -2 on March 2 .

Obituaries

Michael Wood 6/27/1943 – 1/7/2022

Michael David Wood was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, on June 27, 1943.

He died, age 78, on Jan. 7, at his home in Ojai, California of natural causes.

Michael was the eldest son of Harold David Wood and Dorothy O’Connor Wood, both of central New York.

Michael grew up living on or near U.S. Naval bases where his father was stationed as a Navy pilot, moving every few years to such places as Pensacola, Florida; Toms River, New Jersey; Coronado, California; and Honolulu, Hawaii.

As a child, he loved reading, baseball, his many pets and the adventures of growing up in a big family.

He graduated from Escambia High School in Pensacola, Florida, and attended St Mary’s College of Maryland.

Hoping to follow in his father’s footsteps, Michael applied to join the Navy but was rejected because of a high school leg injury. fter a brief first marriage and working in construction in Washington D. C. for several years, he moved to California

in 1971, living in Santa Barbara, Isla Vista and Carpinteria. Michael loved the outdoors and lived for a time on Yogi Haeckel’s property on San Marcos Pass, and later in a homemade teepee built on a large wooden platform in the Santa Ynez Mountains, riding his bike down to the beaches and working in carpentry and house painting.

Michael and Carolyn Kadota married in 1975 and together had two sons, who grew up surrounded by the support and love of their parents and the extended Kadota family.

Michael was an avid plantsman and curated a vast collection of potted plants wherever he lived. When not tending to his plant collection, Michael could mostly be found reading and keeping up with current events in newspapers, television and magazines.

While Michael seemed quite content to live a fairly private lifestyle these last years, he enjoyed and had wonderful relationships with his neighbors and friends in Ojai, and his former sister-inlaw Marian Kadota. He loved his sons, Mateo and Nate, and his many siblings, nieces and nephews. Michael was soft spoken, kind and engaging, and those who knew him miss him dearly.

Michael was predeceased by his parents, brother Mark Wood, sister Dorothy (Gaylen) Schaubroeck and brother-in-law Michael Davis. He is survived by sons Mateo Wood of Isla Vista and Nathan (Emily Hansen) Wood of Carpinteria; grandson Jacob Wood; siblings Peter (Joan) Wood, Mary Thomas, John Wood, Christine Davis, Thomas (Jami) Wood, Barbarba (Raymond) Guerin, Andrew (Virginia) Wood, and Ann (William) Ratcliff; and loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

There will be a private celebration of life with family at a later date.

Stanley Scrivner 2/1/1944 – 2/18/2022

Stanley Earl Scrivner, Jr. passed away at his home in Carpinteria, California, on Friday, Feb. 18. Stanley was born to Stanley Earl Scrivner, Sr. and Margaret Sharp Scrivner on Feb. 1, 1944, in Clovis, California. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, Class of 1962, and retired as a typesetter from the Fresno Bee Newspaper after 40 years.

Stanley was a member of Friendship Force Santa Barbara, Yosemite Conservancy and Carpinteria Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group. He shared his enthusiasm and knowledge of the great outdoors and gardening with everyone he knew.

Stanley is survived by his wife Terry Wheeler Butler Scrivner, daughters Monique Scrivner, Jennifer Butler Boelter and Sally Butler Osborn, and son Paul Scrivner. He is also survived by his sister Shirley Tate, brother Glenn Scrivner, exwife Jeanine Simonian, eight grandchildren and three great-grandsons.

Bobby Morgan 1/5/1931 – 2/3/2022

Bobby Morgan passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, Feb. 3, in Carpinteria. Bobby was born in County Line, Carter County, Oklahoma, on Jan 5, 1931.

Bobby was a resident of Carpinteria for the last 79 years. He lived at his family’s residence in the Concha Loma neighborhood since the 1950s. He was preceded in death by his mother and father Nora and Edgar Damron, both of Carpinteria, and brother Jim Damron of Montecito.

He is survived by his sisters Patsy Doan of Ventura, Nellie Schuyler of Virginia Beach and Brother Edward “Bub” Damron of Carpinteria. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was affectionately known as ncle Bob to his family and many others in Carpinteria.

After graduating from Carpinteria schools, at age 20 Bobby joined the U.S. Air Force in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 19 . e en oyed fishing with his friends, animals and helped his parents in their later years.

He could be found “holding court” in his patio room for many years and always welcomed friends to come by and visit.

A private funeral service was held for him at the Carpinteria Cemetery a week after his passing.

Housing affordability: What you can do

THE LAY OF THE LAND MIKE WONDOLOWSKI Last summer on a hike up the Franklin Trail, my wife Diane and I were discussing the challenges people face finding and affording a place to live here in Carpinteria or even anywhere close by. This is a wonderful place to live, and housing costs have been high here for a long time. But prices and rents have really skyrocketed in the past few years. Now, possibly more than ever, parents worry that their kids won t be able to afford to live here.

As Diane and I discussed the various causes of this situation, and what it means to local families, we realized that some of the most important issues are not obvious unless you step back and look at the big picture (which is fortunately not too difficult when viewing the panorama of the Carpinteria Valley from the Franklin Trail).

Out of that discussion on the trail came my series on this topic in this column over the past six months. The issues I have touched on in this series have included how the meaning of “The American Dream” has evolved over time, various factors that impact housing supply, effects of local planning decisions on the types

and pay of local jobs, and the relationship between levels of education and annual wages that help people afford housing.

After considering these various factors, one of the most important conclusions is there is no single “fi .” nyone who purports to have “the answer” to local housing problems is, at best, ill-informed.

Often when a new housing project is proposed, supporters many with a financial interest in the development) pitch the proposed increase in local housing supply as an “obvious” supply-and-demand response to high prices and low availability. However, this argument frequently falls apart when considering the type of housing proposed and how it fits into and impacts the existing community.

The wrong type of housing project can actually exacerbate the housing problem by pulling in out-of-town buyers or renters who were not previously in the local market. Increasing supply does not necessarily decrease prices, especially when there is a huge set of potential buyers or renters in other areas (such as Los Angeles) who would love to live here and maybe even work from home in the post-Covid work environment.

A simple, quick fix to the housing crunch can be as appealing as a pill that promises easy weight loss without exercise or dieting. But in reality, any uick fi is ust as effective and useful as that pill.

Does that mean there is no solution and nothing we can do? Absolutely not! There are three general steps each of us can take: First, we need to develop some appreciation for the complexity of the housing

Ours is not the only community facing these challenges, although they are accentuated in this desirable small beach town.

Personally, I recommend going to the Coastal View News website and reviewing the past six months of this column for an overview. But however you inform yourself, once you understand that there is no simple, uick fi , you are ready to move to the next step.

The second step is to engage with our local government leaders, both city and county, and push them to make planning decisions that improve local housing availability and affordability, and create well-paying jobs that help local workers afford local housing. Planning decisions that create primarily minimum-wage tourist-serving jobs move us in the wrong direction. Development of affordable housing must not be an afterthought, but a key part of any project. Any proposal, residential or commercial, must be evaluated for how it will affect the jobs-housing balance in our community, or else those who live here will leave for work somewhere else, and those who work here will commute here from their homes elsewhere.

The third step is what we each have the most direct control over: preparing ourselves and the next generation for well-paying jobs that will make it possible to participate in a hot housing market.

The correlation between higher levels of education and higher-paying jobs is well-documented. But education takes planning, time, commitment and support from family, friends and a community. It is a long road, so the time to begin down that road is right now.

Yes, housing in Carpinteria is expensive. Yes, your kids might not be able to afford to live here. But they and you can improve their chances.

In his 30 years of involvement in planning issues, he has witnessed visionary successes, as well as decisions that were later widely regretted.

We get it, we talk about you at parties, and it’s great for CVN, as it provides an active letter writing submission volume – guilty here, I realize. Yell at the TV. So many local issues deserve the ink.

We all are exhausted and frustrated after two years of enduring the Covid-19 pandemic, so it is easy to throw our hands up in the air and say, “Let’s just move on.” But we can’t just move on and ignore everything we have learned during this pandemic. We learned that ignoring basic medical science is dangerous to everyone’s well-being.

I was dismayed to see the recent letter from Diana Thorn (“Move On,” CVN, Vol. 28, No. 23) telling us to move on, while she repeats basic misunderstandings about how this virus operates. Lockdowns did slow the spread of the virus, masks do work and vaccines are highly effective. t is wonderful to hear that her husband’s recent case of Covid-19 was mild – and the reason it was mild was because he had the vaccine, not because Omicron is “mild!”

Yes, Covid-19 variants are here to stay.

But it is dangerous to spread the lie that they will all be less dangerous – that, we cannot predict. What we do know is this: if we allow the virus to spread, it will multiply and then mutate. We do not know if those mutations will be more or less harmful. Everyone should continue to get their vaccines, get boosted when appropriate and wear masks if there is another surge of cases. That is the only way we can “move on” and prevent serious illness and death from a now endemic virus.

Ok, it’s early in the game. We’ve just had the preliminary Santa Barbara South County Architectural Review Board meeting and here come the dog and ponies, poorly clad and limping. The Housing Authority is overly desirous of the project, considering all its obvious aws. Benefits are touted without the counter of losses. As the county receives the precious housing credits, and the developer delights with the ongoing revenues, the city will be saddled with the cost of support services. There are density issues. Did I mention water costs?

Forty non-integrated units of affordable housing, separate from services in a poorly-designed “resort style” development for workforce housing is – I’ll just say it – ludicrous. And yes, the “local” urban developer does hail from Las Vegas, and two of the three architects are located in Orange and San Diego counties. They would not know Carpinteria Valley from a hole in the urban boundary – or maybe it’s just that. With preliminary details

Street parking is already challenging

Interesting name for the new Bailard Avenue condo project since at least one Red-Tailed Hawk lives on the property.

I guess they want to commemorate the beautiful creature before displacing it.

I have not seen any mention that Bailard Avenue from the freeway through Mar Vista Park is more of a parking lot rather than a major thoroughfare. The parking between Villa Del Mar and Casitas Village is not parallel. To exit a parking space, a driver has to blindly back up until the through-traffic is visible. t is hard enough to be safe with the current traffic, especially on weekends when the park is rightfully filled with happy soccer or volleyball games, BBQ events, weddings and birthday parties, etc.

Also, everyone that lives in Villa Del Mar and Casitas Village knows that two parking spaces per unit is not enough.

With the percentage of adult children now living at home or with even another family sharing exorbitant rents, street parking is very challenging. Two parking spaces for the Red Tail complex occupants are not going to be enough either – and guess where they will park.

It is so sad to see the number of people that walk right by her as if she was invisible. I asked her if there was any place in our city where she could go for help. She answered no. I didn’t know if that was true or not, because I didn’t know either.

As a caring community, we should be able to provide locations where the homeless can rest, clean up, safely store their belongings and have something to eat. You can tell a lot about a community by the way it treats its most vulnerable. I know that there are many concerned people and organizations in our municipality that are dedicated to helping the destitute.

But many of us don’t know who or where they are, or how we can help besides giving money. I’m hoping some of these charitable organizations and churches reply in-kind.

I think all Coastal View News readers know how Mr. Sanderson Smith feels about President Biden (“Biden is a disaster,” CVN, Vol. 28, No. 23) since his past two or three letters have been critical attacks loaded with all the Fox News, rightwing misinformation. He lays blame for all the problems we are facing as though they commenced once Biden was elected – a fact his guy still will not face.

He ignores the fact that President Biden inherited the border mess left by Trump, who mishandled policies, immigrants, Covid-19, the pandemic and an Iraqi withdrawal agreement (signed by Trump . Biden is blamed for in ation, rising energy and food prices, which financial experts agree are directly linked to pandemic global market supply shortages, together with energy and goods suppliers, who profit by raising prices on necessary items like food and gas. It is reassuring to me that he is leading our country, especially now with the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He has united our NATO allies and has the support of the European Union to aid Ukraine unlike Trump and some Republican congressmen who have lauded Putin’s anti-democratic aggression as “savvy” and genius.

I am happy that we have a president that knows what he is doing and who is kind, honest and really puts merica first.

I recently began helping my wife with our grocery shopping at Albertsons. My job is to assist her with the heavy and hard-to-get items and help bag groceries.

This gives me time to go over to Tyler’s Donuts to get some of their terrific pan dulce, a Mexican pastry. If homeless Carpinterians are around, I usually buy some donuts to give to any homeless person that was there, along with some money. I know people say you shouldn’t give the homeless money, but rather donate to a charity or church. But heck with that.

I feel better about myself knowing that some money is going directly to them.

Carpinteria nified School District s Feb. 23 board meeting saw a sharp escalation of complaints from parents about leadership at liso lementary School, which has had two separate police reports filed involving staff in the past month. lthough Parents for liso PF a parent group at liso had previously e pressed concerns with Principal eronica allardo s behavior, the recent escalation began after a Feb. 2 incident in a fifth grade classroom. fter a boy accidently hit a teacher with his shoe, he was allegedly grabbed by his collar and dragged out of the classroom by a teacher s aide, according to a police summary of the incident.

The boy s mother, orrie Collier, and great-grandmother, Shirley Strickler, both spoke at Wednesday night s school board meeting and described their troubles with district staff. “ The aide grabbed my son by the collar and forcibly dragged him out of class, got a call from the school saying my son needed to be picked up because he was being disrespectful,” Collier told the board.

“That night, got home, and had several different parents contacting me, saying how their child came home talking about how their friend and classmate was forcibly grabbed by the collar and physically removed from class and sent home.

This incident affected those students and their parents. When spoke with Ms. allardo about it, she refused to talk about it,” she added.

Collier filed a police report after the incident.

The boy was sent home two more times after the Feb. 2 incident, following reports he was “disrespectful,” Strickler said.

by Ms. allardo s past and current actions. This classroom is in crisis, and we cannot allow one of the instigators of that crisis to now take the helm.”

PF Co-President Monica Solorzano and other speakers urged the board last Wednesday not to renew allardo s contract, which will soon be up for renewal. allardo has worked at liso for less than a year. t Wednesday s meeting, Solorzano e pressed “disappointment with the lack of response from the Superintendent and the school board.”

Dr. Regina Ruiz, a longtime member of PF who has three children enrolled in the district, has also filed a police report against allardo, in relation to a separate incident, she confirmed to C .

Ruiz told the board that allardo retaliated against and intimidated her on Feb. 1 after she complained about allardo s leadership at the board s Feb. meeting. “ n Feb. , spoke in front of this board advocating for ethnic families at our school to receive bilingual communication from Mrs. allardo. This was a federally protected speech under Title 6 of the Civil Rights ct of 196 , ” she told the board.

“While responding to an email completely unrelated to my work, Ms. allardo notified me that she knows where work, and is personal family friends with my direct supervisor. immediately perceived this as retaliation, intimidation and a threat to my ob.” allardo did not respond to re uest for comment about the retaliation allegations raised by Ruiz or about the comments made at the Feb. 23 school board meeting.

Union, CUSD reach agreement over substitute teacher pay A

BY EVELYN SPENCE A memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed last week between the Carpinteria Unified School District (CUSD) and its associated union – the Carpinteria Association of United School Employees (CAUSE) – sets a new compensation rate for teachers who substitute during their prep periods.

Per the agreement, teachers who substitute will now be compensated at their per diem hourly rate, at a rate no lower than $41.75. This rate will be provided retroactively to the beginning of the 20212022 school year.

The agreement expires on June 30, 2022.

“The district has suffered staffing shortages caused by the recent surge of Covid-19 cases and the Omicron variant.

As a result of teachers having to be quarantined and isolated due to Covid-19, there is an on-going need to have teachers substitute and cover classes,” the M reads.

This agreement does not apply to instructional aides, counselors, custodians, transportation workers and co-teachers, according to CAUSE. It also only applies to certified teachers at Carpinteria Middle and High schools, Superintendent Diana Rigby confirmed.

“CAUSE leadership is proud of bringing this issue forward, and as a result, securing increased compensation (…) for faculty providing extra-contractual substitute service,” otchner said. “With a fully open contract and collective bargaining cycle soon upon us, CAUSE leadership will once again pursue the proposed improvements contained in our original and counter proposals.”

Last semester, the district had eight substitute teachers available, comparable to its typical 30 or 40.

Board adopts by-trustee election plan

The C SD board adopted a by-trustee election plan 203 last Wednesday, officially switching to by-trustee elections for the November 2022 elections.

There was minimal discussion on the matter. Board member ndy Sheaffer pointed out that all three choices provided are “very similarly configured,” but that plan 203 has the lowest population deviation.

District union president Jay Hotchner, who spoke on this item at the board’s prior meeting, e pressed concern about the map s configuration, which keeps each of the board member s current residences in different districts. This allows them to run for their seats again in the fall without running against each other. “ ach version of the redistricting maps provided to the community re ects that uni ue we believe self-serving board member priority,” he said. “We, the union, continue to encourage the board and the community to focus instead on other priorities, like drawing the maps to maximize the diversity of our school board, which hasn t e actly re ected and represented the district s Latino student population for uite some time.”

Last month, the state of California temporarily loosened substitute teacher guidelines to help with shortages. Per Governor Gavin Newsom’s executive order, temporary teaching certificates can be issued to non-credentialed substitute teachers through March 31. The order also waives some other requirements to allow retired teachers to return to classrooms.

“These are short-term challenges that require short-term and targeted solutions,” ewsom said last month.

Fitzgerald reported $36,537,330 in projected revenues for the 2022-23 general fund, compared to $35,709,649 in expenditures.

A study in Northern California found that the closer you approach to harbor seals, and the noisier you are, the more seals ee. bvious Yes, but rigorous science does help focus the obvious.

Harbor seals, like all mammals, are individuals, and their reactions to threats vary with genetics, age and experience. In Carpinteria, some night vision counts found more seals than are counted in the day, and clearly some proportion adapt more than others to movement and noises on the pier and from the bluffs above. Repeated disturbances cause fewer and fewer seals to return to the beach – both on a daily and long-term basis. The city beach closure was prompted by biologist testimony that showed increased disturbances could cause loss of the rookery, as has happened elsewhere in California.

The sonic boom from the SpaceX launch on Friday frightened all the seals into the ocean. Jet skiers and cars driving rapidly in the pier-turnaround caused additional disturbances.

The California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) is a comprehensive youth health risk and resilience data collection service required by CDE for grades 7,9 and 11.

It is designed to identify areas of strength and improvement in students as schools promote the well-being and positive social development of all students. This student survey is paired with the California School Parent Survey and California School Staff Survey to provide key data on school climate and safety, learning supports and barriers, parent engagement, and student social-emotional development, health and wellbeing. The survey results provide information to guide school improvement efforts for the Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAP) in the areas of enhancing school climate, student engagement, parent involvement and addressing the needs of high-risk students.

Howard School seventh-grader Mateo Betancourt wanted to help families feel safer during the pandemic by finding out the best individual cleaning method for public play structure surfaces. The result of his experiment, “Prokaryotic Playground,” was a bleach spray cleaner that performed better than Clorox wipes or water alone and he took home first place for it in the seventh/eighth grade division of his school’s science fair.

Top teachers honored as Educators of the Year

The pandemic brought challenges beyond expectations to local teachers and schools, but it also brought the vital work of school staff as caregivers, child advocates and educators to the forefront of society.

Three Carpinteria teachers will be honored at the upcoming Carpinteria Community wards ala, the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce has announced.

Ryan Ethington will be honored as the 2020 Educator of the Year, and Kate Guede and Carolyn aines as the 2021 ducators of the ear. ducators of the ear are each awarded 00. The chamber event will be held on Saturday, March 12, at Rincon Beach Club. To attend, visit sbscchamber.com for tickets.

At Carpinteria Middle School, students find creative guidance from e pert art teacher Ryan Ethington, who joined the school faculty in 2018 with seven years of teaching experience already under his belt. thington s teaching style emphasizes critical thinking and student-centered learning, drawing on his technical background in graphic design, painting, printmaking and sculpture.

“I encourage all students to be an inquirer, to be open minded, take risks, and also to be re ective,” thington said, noting that his classroom is full of projects that help develop visual thinking and social-emotional growth.

“I strive to create an environment where students develop an ethic of excellence in their work, positive attitudes, self-confidence. n my class, they learn to collaborate, to understand the art world, learn different cultures, and a little bit of art history.”

Ethington grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, attending Point Loma Nazarene University for his bachelors, National University for his teaching credential, and the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, for his master s in fine art.

being able to inspire and lead others. thington s grandfather was a veteran and a teacher and encouraged him to pursue education as a career. “ knew teaching would be the perfect career to use my strengths, allowing me to think big, encourage kids, collaborate with others, make a big impact, and teach others to do the same,” he said. thington s ability to connect with his students is no accident; it comes from the heart. “When people hear m a middle school teacher they often thank me and comment, must have a lot of patience,” he said. “ owever, middle school is my jam! I experienced a lot of adverse challenges when I attended middle school and I feel like it has made me a more compassionate, resilient, and understanding middle school teacher.”

For Ethington, some of the greatest moments teaching are when his students are in the spotlight for their achievements, such as when the collaborative art piece by his CMS students was brought on stage at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival by the directors of “Ralph Breaks the nternet.”

“They even (took it) back to their studio to hang on their wall to inspire their animators,” thington beamed.

Canalino Elementary School standout teacher, Carolyn Haines, grew up in La Palma, California, in north Orange County. She learned the value in caregiving at a young age from her mother who was a hemodialysis nurse as well as through providing her father a hemodialysis patient with home hemodialysis treatments. arly on, she also knew that her greatest passion would be teaching.

“I have always loved learning and loved school,” aines said. “ practically lived at my local public library, reading nearly every book in the children s section by the time was 10 years old. always loved learning new things and dreamed of being a teacher.” aines was the first in her family to complete a bachelors, then master s degree. When she moved to Carpinteria in 2015 with her husband Ben and children, Adam and Jeremy, she began substituting for Carpinteria nified School District, where her boys attended school. She fell in love with the elementary classroom and after four years substitute teaching, she earned her Multiple Subject Teaching Credential in 2019. t Canalino, she soon became a fulltime teacher.

In addition to her classroom teaching, Haines has led an afterschool STEM program and serves as a technology coach for her colleagues. She is also a Social ustice Committee chairperson for Canalino/ Family School, an issue she feels strongly about and has led her to create inclusive classroom settings for her students.

“Growing up as the daughter of someone with a disability, I have witnessed the cruelty and injustice that people with disabilities e perience,” she said, noting that she is passionate about inclusive education and aims to provide a classroom environment that welcomes all students and celebrates differences and diversity.

“I believe that the classroom belongs to the students,” she added. “My ob is to cultivate an environment where they will grow and learn. empower my students to take ownership of their learning and see themselves as scientists, mathematicians, writers, inventors, e plorers. very lesson I design considers the needs and interests of my students.”

Haines said she had many inspirational people in her life as she cultivated her teaching approach, including Canalino principal Jamie Persoon and her sixthgrade teacher Mrs. akamura at Twila Reid lementary School in naheim. She also has learned from her colleagues in Carpinteria, Dezi Mayer and ico Lopez, who teach Special Day Classes, “helping to teach and care for the students with the greatest need.”

Haines was surprised to be named as Educator of the Year but is excited for the honor, noting that her students helped keep her positive over the past two years.

“Every challenge we face and change we endure, we are in it together, cheering one another on, pushing each other ahead.”

Kate Guede

Santa Barbara-native Kate Guede has an impressive tenure at CUSD. Now entering her 21 st year as an educator (16th at CUSD), Guede teaches Spanish at Carpinteria High School where she has helped students earn top scores in Advanced Placement testing for Spanish Language and Culture, maintaining an over 90% pass rate. She also teaches courses in AVID (Advanced Via Individual Determination), leads the school’s honor society and California Scholastic Federation, and serves as the co-adviser for Spanish Club and chair of the World Language Department.

Guede grew up in Santa Barbara listening to her father, who was a teacher, tell stories about his students’ accomplishments. She learned to appreciate the experience of being a part of youth development and growth.

“Teaching gives a front row seat to seeing young people achieve and find that so exciting,” she said. “Our youth has so much potential and getting to walk with them on their journey is a privilege.”

After completing her bachelor’s degree in Spanish at Westmont College, Guede received her teaching credential at CSU Northridge, and went on to complete a

master’s in Educational Technology from zusa Pacific niversity.

CHS principal Gerardo Cornejo said that Guede is a teacher whose impact is sizeable, calling her an “educator among educators.”

“If you speak to any student who has had Ms. Guede as a teacher, they will tell you that Ms. Guede has made an impact on who they are and who they will be as adults,” Cornejo said. “Ms. Guede takes time to get to know each student, works to encourage students to overcome their individual challenges and to turn them into learning experiences that will only make them stronger and more resilient.”

Guede said that she enjoys the educational journey with her students and hopes that they will also understand its importance and value the classroom they create together.

“I love seeing kids dream, set goals, and then accomplish them,” she said. “I am always thankful to get to be part of that journey.”

Some books you read for the poetic use of language, some for the characters, some for the stories, and some for the emotional impact. “Circle Way” does each of those things for the reader. Mary Ann Hogan, a journalist and writer has given us a memoir of her family, a family that settled in California in the 1880s.

The literary editor of the San Francisco Chronicle spins a mighty thread through multiple generations: great-grandfather, Old Man Hugh, a self-made titan of the lumber business, grandfather Will, a man about the town, not a businessman, and her father, Bill Hogan.

Deep emotional ties to land and family frame much of the narrative, interwoven with artwork and writing from her father’s journals. The characters, their successes, their failures, the impacts of each generation on the next, testify to the roads not taken, attempts not made. The author s re ections on her father’s journals, discovered after his death, fill in much of the background as she explores what is truly a saga.

Days after I finished this book, its words still simmered under my skin.

Most of the story takes place in the 1950s in the small town of Mallard, Louisiana, where a community of light-skinned Black families have settled, creating a place for people “who would never be accepted as white but refused to be treated like Negroes.” The Vigne sisters are identical twins, both light-skinned girls with the ability to pass as white. The girls witness their father being lynched by white men when they are children, and they carry this trauma throughout their adolescent and adult lives.

When one of the sisters “disappears” to live as a white woman and marry a white man, the story that unfolds brings the question of passing to the forefront.

Calling all booklovers to help barcode for new library Calling all volunteers for the Great Migration! All items in the Carpinteria Library must have a new barcode affi ed as we transition to an independent city library. There are currently 12,700 books, magazines, DVDs and more, and each one must have its Santa Barbara Public Library label blacked out, a new barcode attached, a new scan completed and the radio tag reset. Each part of this project is simple, but it will take about 1,000 hours to do the job. We will need many hands! Sign up with a friend or make new friends during your shift.

The barcoding process will begin on March 15 and must be complete by April 15. If you have two hours to spare, we hope you will join the project, which is the single most time-consuming aspect of becoming an independent library. The volunteer shifts will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Volunteers must be 16 years old or older, and high school students can receive community service hours for their time.

The Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara (MCASB) announced an open call for its 2022 Earth Day mural, inviting proposals from Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo area artists.

MCASB is partnering with the Community Environmental Council and Paseo Nuevo in its search for proposals. The previous winning mural proposal was submitted by driana rriaga and Claudia Borfiga. Their mural, “ urture ur Mother,” has been on view on the exterior side of MCASB since it was painted in 2021.

At its last meeting, the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset hosted directors from three local youth-serving organizations.

Don Hall from the United Boys & Girls Club of Carpinteria, Teresa Alvarez from the Carpinteria Children’s Project and Jamie Collins from Girls Inc. of Carpinteria spoke to the club about their various programs and resources available to Carpinteria families. The nited Boys irls Club offers various afterschool and youth development programs, while the Carpinteria Children’s Project focuses on supporting families for younger children, and irls nc. of Carpinteria offers afterschool programs and enrichment activities for girls.

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning helped clean up at the Alisal Fire burn area in Baron Ranch recently, along with volunteers from the Montecito, Santa Barbara Sunrise and Santa Barbara Rotary clubs.

“We pulled weeds, cleared brush, collected trash and planted new native plants.

This service project represents the new area of service for Rotary International for environmental service,” Rotarian Kim Fly said.

The club also announced the winner of its all-inclusive trip to Mexico: Rob Klug, a Rotarian from Lompoc.

Rotary Club of Carpinteria Noon takes trip to Hueneme port

Twenty members from the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Noon took a trip to the port of Hueneme, with a tour courtesy of Port Director Kristin Decas.

According to the club, the port is the fourth largest on the West Cost, primarily importing fresh produce and automobiles. Club members toured the port’s facilities and visited its research labs.

Biofeedback and your health Sleep: ve written about sleep before because it s so important to health and not always valued enough. f you are chronically under sleeping, it may be hard to identify what the repercussions are because many of the biofeedback markers will be low.

Sleep quality: Sleep uality is how well you slept. f you slept 10 hours but tossed and turned all night or slept si hours but were dead to the world, d argue that the latter was probably better sleep.

WELLNESS WARRIOR LEAH HARDING First thing, first, what is biofeedback t is a mind-body connection to help you improve not only your physical health, but also your mental health.

For e ample, when you lose sleep, you may be hungrier the ne t day or have cravings. r, when your stress levels are high, you may notice that your digestion suffers. Those signals from your body hunger, bloating, poor digestion are trying to tell you something.

Biofeedback markers help me, as a coach, and you, as someone trying to be healthier, to better understand how your body is responding to different stimuli and changes, whether that is through diet and nutrition, a new workout routine or life changes such as a new ob, relationship or loss. When analyzed closely, you can often find patterns in your behavior and bodily responses you didn t otherwise know e isted.

When working with biofeedback, like to have clients use a 1-10 scale, with 10 being optimal. sing a numerical scale helps to process each measure more obectively and standardizes the process so bad moods or being hangry don t sway the results. ere are the markers use

Hunger/cravings: While listed together, these aren t the same. People often conate their perception of hunger and cravings. ou can certainly have one without the other. n fact, the more you pay attention to this, the more you ll start to understand what your body really needs for nourishment. That means you might be eating too much if you re craving but not hungry or too little if you re hungry but not craving .

Mood: This marker can be indicative of other things, but you can learn a lot about yourself in how your response corresponds to other biofeedback markers. f your stress increases and you notice it always puts you in a horrible mood, you need to find better ways to deal with your stress look for suggestions on how to do this in a future “Wellness Warrior” .

Stress: Stress can be personal, work-related, family-related or even physically related like chronic undereating . dentifying your root causes and how your body responds to your stress can be beneficial in becoming a healthier person.

Energy: The afternoon slump falls s uarely in this category. f you have good energy, you won t have an afternoon slump.

A woman was observed on video entering a backyard on Palm Avenue.

Upon the deputies’ arrival, a neighbor stated the woman was last seen walking south on Palm Avenue. While checking the area, the side gates to one of the residences were found open. The resident was contacted, who requested a check of her backyard. The suspect was located, and they were taken into custody for prowling. During a search, a dollar bill with meth was found. The suspect was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

A reporting party called to report that his guitar and some crystals were stolen from inside the residence, with a total value of $600. He believes they were stolen on or about Jan. 29, 2022. The reporting party is accusing the property owner’s daughter of stealing the items. On Feb. 23, a deputy saw a suspect vehicle driving erratically, swerving over the roadway at excessive speeds.

The vehicle accelerated to over 100 mph while entering the Highway 101 southbound, from the Bailard Avenue on-ramp.

The vehicle s plate was identified as a recently stolen plate from Carpinteria.

The California Highway Patrol and Ventura Police Department were advised as sheriff s deputies attempted to catch up with the vehicle. CHP later apprehended the suspect.

She was transported to the hospital. It is unclear if she was under the in uence of a drug or had a mental health condition.

She said that a stranger gave her a ride to the motel. Based on the aforementioned information, she caused the collision by being in the roadway at night, dressed in black, such as the motorist – driving 10 mph below the speed limit – did not see her until the collision was imminent.

Deputies responded to a mother/ daughter dispute because the daughter had broken a vase and a window during an argument. Her mother signed a citizen’s arrest form, and the daughter was arrested and booked into jail.

Deputies responded to a neighbor dispute. The reporting party called to report his neighbor was choking his dog. The other man also alleged the reporting party kicked him in the knees and made them bloody, so he wanted to press charges.

The neighbor said his dog was not listening, so he pulled the leash, which made him whimper. The reporting party says the neighbor ran at him and assaulted him. The reporting party said the neighbor tried to punch him, but missed and fell to the ground and scraped his knees on the concrete. They both wanted to press charges against each other. A report will be sent to the district attorney.

The victim was contacted by Ventura County Sheriff’s Department who informed him, that they arrested two people in Camarillo that were in possession of his trailer. The victim checked and confirmed his trailer was missing from his home. His trailer was entered into the Stolen vehicle system and Ventura County did the locate the trailer. The victim responded to the Home Depot parking lot to recover his stolen trailer.

Two women were contacted after they requested assistance jump starting their vehicle. During the contact, it was discovered one of the women was on probation, with search terms. She was found in possession of a used meth pipe and OC spray. Her room was searched based on her probation terms. During the search, additional drugs/paraphernalia were located. When asked, her roommate stated the drugs/paraphernalia in the room belonged to him. Both were cited and released at the scene without incident.

A transient female called to report that she was contacted by three men, who asked her to leave the area where she was sleeping, or they would stab her. The victim reported that she saw the suspect pull out a small pocketknife while holding methamphetamine in the other hand. A deputy contacted a male who said he did ask the female transient to get off the front of his business, but did not threaten her or pull out a knife. The male had other witnesses with him who said the male never threatened the victim or pulled out a knife.

Rincon visions: Jimmy Metyko

Photographer Jimmy Metyko didn’t live in the 805-area code for long, but his timing was impeccable in terms of surf conditions, surf culture and the surfing talent of his subjects and friends.

Between 1980 and 1983, Metyko (b.

1959) captured a critical moment at Rincon Point and the surrounding area, easily comparable in significance to the late sixties of Greenough, Yater and the strong Carpinteria High surf classes that culminated in the events of 1969. A little more than 10 years later, Metyko captured on film another run of great surf, the meteoric rise of Tom Curren and company, and the first heyday of Channel slands Surfboards under Al Merrick.

Like several other of the Point’s strongest photographers, Metyko was drawn to the area originally by the twin charms of the Brooks nstitute and Rincon Point. n that bygone era, photography was a world of F-stops, film speed and manual focus, a true craft to be painstakingly mastered in class, on location and in the darkroom. And just like another master shooter, Bernie Baker, who moved to Hawaii with the intention of becoming a Surfer Magazine photographer, Jimmy M. came to our region with the same audacious goal. t s a testament to both Baker and Metyko’s photographic chops and tenacity that they both succeeded.

Metyko used his Brooks training to build a successful career in photography and design, with high-powered talent and brands. From his base today outside of Austin, Texas, Metyko designs, shoots and presents campaigns for the collegiate sports market. As with peers like Bill Robbins and Steve Bissell, Metyko found the photography world congenial for its opportunities for creativity and the chance to be one’s own boss.

A great career lay in store for Metyko but back in 1980 it was his front-row seat at Rincon and the larger Santa Barbara surf scene that allowed him to document on film the budding partnership between master shaper Al Merrick (b. 1944) and surf phenom Tommy Curren (b. 1964).

Both men were destined to become surfing legends of the first order. t s often said that Rincon Point’s long wave is the perfect laboratory for surfboard design and innovation, whether the craftsman is Yater, Greenough or Matt Moore. Such was the case for Merrick whose boards started to catch fire in the late 19 0s. To hear Metyko tell it, it was just being in the

After dropping their first match the arpinteria boys tennis s uad hit their groove this week with three straight wins in a row.

The arriors’ week of wins started on the road at hannel slands. espite gusty winds and few drops of rain arpinteria sailed past the aiders - . e handled the windy conditions better than they did and played a smart style of tennis today coach harles Bryant said. Our main focus was to limit our mistakes and do our best to set up for each shot against the ever-changing direction of the ball. yan Sou a led the charge in singles play with a perfect - sweep. Brothers Austin and ax Stone each finished in singles sets while Asher ampel was able to step up and win his only singles set of the day. n doubles the team’s other duo of brothers ucas and Nolan artin were in lockstep together on the court and swept all three sets. Troy immerman and partner Ben ersoon also went - as did the final duo of an Thomas and aiden Juare . ven though it is very early in the season our doubles teams seem to be starting to come into focus Bryant said.

The next day the arriors played host to St. Bonaventure on another cold and windy match. oubles play was just as solid with the artin brothers sweeping all sets without dropping a game and Juare winning three sets with two different partners.

n singles play against the Seraphs the Stone brothers once again dominated their sets both finishing - . arpinteria finished the match on top - claiming their second win in a row.

The arriors final test of the week would be their toughest as they hit the road to face the defending champion oothill Tech ragons at entura ollege. arpinteria started the day slow trailing - and new doubles partners struggled to get used to each other. e just made way too many easy mistakes whether they be unforced errors double faults or missed returns Bryant said. That just haunted us the whole day but we definitely started to reel in those mistakes in the second and third round. n the second round arpinteria split the six sets but lost the first two in the third round to fall behind - .

That’s when we came alive with a strong determination from all of the players to comeback tie up the score and make us count games to see who wins Bryant said.

The arriors roared back winning the final singles set and all three doubles sets to even the score at - . After counting total games won arpinteria was awarded the victory - . arpinteria is now - overall heading into a week with two games. The arriors will host San arcos before hitting the road to play illanova.

arriors boys volleyball started their regular season with a busy week of three games starting with back-to-back wins against Bishop iego and io esa.

After sweeping io esa in their first match arpinteria headed to the Brick ouse to play county rival Bishop iego.

The arriors jumped out to a hot start grabbing the first set - . The second set was a back-and-forth battle with arpinteria coming out on top - . n the third and final set arpinteria earned bragging rights winning - to sweep the ardinals in three straight sets.

NOTES ON THE DAY… What kind of wedding did you plan?

We had a medium sized, black-tie wedding at the Cottages at Polo Run, on the polo fields in arpinteria. Our style was modern with a touch of bohemian and we used warm colors such as rusts pinks and oranges. The ottages are the most beautiful venue and the entire bridal party was able to stay in the historic cottages all weekend. uring our ceremony there were horses running behind our altar and it couldn’t have been more magical.

What kinds of modif ications did you have to make f or it to be Covid saf e? or our appeti er we had individual charcuterie boards for our guests which allowed minimal contact during the

serving process. The best part was our guests were able to keep the board which was made from hand carved wood from a dear friend and burned with our logo by oastlands in arpinteria which gives back to high school youth. e also served individual cakes on each table where it was mostly the same family or household. This added a beautiful centerpiece and turned out ama ing.

The guests were so happy and the cakes were delicious.

What did your g uests say was their favor ite aspect of the event? think guests particularly liked how involved they were able to be throughout the event. Josh and are blessed to have a circle of friends and family that are a special part of our lives and we wanted to express our gratitude to them by letting them be involved. We mixed the two themes, black-tie and bohemian which was a bit of a challenge but turned out perfectly. e wanted the relaxed family-style that bohemian provided with the glamour and elegance of black-tie. or my dress chose a timeless look and wore a matte dress with a very long train with rouching over the bodice. y veil extended past my train and was covered in pearls of all si es. e added pearls to the tables cakes and flowers to carry that theme. also wore my mother ’s wedding day pearls for my necklace. felt beautiful and everyone made Josh and feel so loved that day.

students during our engagement, and were working multiple jobs. We were only engaged six months, and so we had so much to do! I think the most stressful part was all the little decisions that needed to be made during the process.

I also am creative, and wanted to do a lot of the decor myself. That was fun, but took a lot more time than I had expected!

Why did you choose your ceremony and reception venues?

The Cottages at Polo Run were incredible, and once we toured, we knew that was the perfect place to get married.

We had the venue for the weekend, which allowed us to spend special time there before the big day with our bridal party and our families. Having grown up in Carpinteria my whole life, it was my biggest request in the wedding process to get married in my town.

And at this venue, you can see the

mountains and the ocean, and I felt so at home which was so special.

What part of the meal did people enjoy mos t?

Guicho’s Carpinteria did an incredible job with the catering for our wedding. The food was so delicious, I still have guests come to me talking about it! We had fettuccini Alfredo with chicken, tortellini, lasagna, salad and garlic bread and the guests were so happy. It was elegant and yet still yummy for the kids, and I wouldn’t change anything if I could.

Guicho’s staff worked so hard all night and had the best service. We also had Reynaldo’s cater the cakes. They made 16 double layer buttercream cakes with fresh strawberry filings and pearl candies for decor, and they did such a great job.

To tie in our Korean background, we also provided boba and macaroons from Hello Mai Darling and everyone loved having a taste of our favorite snack.

NOTES ON THE DAY… H ow did you decide what kind of we dding t o have?

From the very beginning of planning, Van and I talked about skipping the organized wedding idea and eloping in Montana. Ne ither of us like to be the center of attention but after this pandemic dragged on longer than expected, we realized we needed to plan a day, casual and comfortable, where our family and friends could sit outside and enjoy some much-needed time together. So that is exactly what we ended up with: 8 0 people, friends and family, gathering outside while socially distanced for a wonderful afternoon/evening. Because our wedding was the first gathering for many since Covid/lockdowns began, I believe the isolation of the pandemic made the appreciation of the day even sweeter.

T ell us about some of the special people and moments f rom your wedding.

Everyone deserves to have a bride tribe like mine, and it was an incredible privilege to have these four women together for the day. I met two of the four women of my bride tribe on the playground at Canalino Elementary. One I met in seventh grade at Carpinteria J unior High ( in the days before it was a middle school) , and the fourth is my daughter. I enjoyed all the moments of my wedding day and much of that is because of all my bride tribe did to ensure my happiness. From making sure no one contacted me with snafus, to manicures, to helping me into that very tight dress, to holding up my dress as we walked up Ogan Road. They were everything.

What do you think was most special to your g uests about the event?

In J uly, there was this magic window when pandemic mandates were relaxed.

It was a magic window that allowed for our 8 0-person outdoor gathering to move forward. Our family guests traveled from all across the country, Italy, Scotland and the N etherlands our wedding/family reunion. After a very long and isolating pandemic, I believe our guests enjoyed sitting together outside, eating tacos and drinking Mai Tais and wine. Under the shade of oak and J acaranda trees, we soaked in perfect Carpinteria weather with family and friends again.

Did your wedding include special details that ref lected your individual personalities?

The special details we included in our wedding were the Mr/Mrs avocado bride/groom cake toppers ( since Van grows avocados) , colorful pashminas for those cool Carpinteria evenings,

and avocado truffles from CaliBressan.

What was your dress like?

My dress was very simple as were my ideas. I did ask my bride tribe if they would wear pink and despite their disdain for pink, they agreed. That was about all I asked. I was not the girl who grew up dreaming of weddings so when I say our wedding was beautiful it is not boastful it’s absolutely a reflection of and an enormous compliment to PacWest Blooms ( Suzie Schneider) who planned/ coordinated our day designed the flowers/decor, and who made everything look more beautiful than I could have ever imagined. Everything was perfect because Suzie and her family are incredibly talented.

our venue but rather a very kind and generous Joyce Powell shared with us the sort of incredible venue you only dream about. We had been committed to another local venue but late in the process that venue was struggling with Covid protocols. Because of family ties between the Latham/ Bensen a nd Powell families, Joyce learned about our venue trouble and very graciously offered her gardens and her great big, beautiful oak tree for our wedding. It was more than we could have dreamed of, and it made our wedding perfect.

Wedding s can end up f eeling like they’r e for the gue sts instead of the bride and gr oom. What did you do to ensure that the day was wonderful for you?

Our wedding was never intended to be about us. We always knew that

we wanted it to be about our guests.

Although the first minutes were for us we had planned our wedding all along as a Bensen/ Latham family reunion, a th birthday celebration for era and a reunion of Carpinteria High School friends/ colleagues/ teachers.

Ten minutes in the spotlight was enough to last the two of us a lifetime!

What advice would you g ive to a couple setting out to plan their wedding?

Our best advice would be to make the marriage your focus as you plan, and to make sure you know how your partner feels about the wedding details. E very step of the way, make sure you gage the comfort level of the other person. There is nothing more difficult than being put in an uncomfortable position in front of an audience. Also, just as important, trust your wedding planner!

NOTES ON THE DAY… T ell us about your vow renewal. What kind of celebration did you have?

We had an outdoor, intimate celebration. We held our vow renewal in my sister’s backyard and kept our guest list to 50 people, mostly all family. Covid-19 allowed us to just focus on a smaller guest list.

We wanted to have a very low-key celebration. It turned out just as I imagined itwould. Our goal was to make our guests feel comfortable and make the night about celebrating our 30 years of marriage!

I s there a moment f rom your wedding that stands out f rom all the others?

Having our three daughters and both sides of our family there to celebrate with us was very special. One thing that I did prior to the vow renewal was invite my daughters, sisters, mother and one of my best friends, Christina Welch, who was a bridesmaid in my wedding 30 years ago, to help make the centerpieces, my bouquet and my daughters’ flower crowns. e had snacks wine and shared a lot of laughs.

What did your gue sts say was their favor ite aspect of the event?

We had a mid-week evening celebration. Knowing that many of our guests would be coming from work we decided to have cocktail hour first. veryone was able to grab a bite to eat, have a drink and mingle. No one felt rushed and then it was an easy transition into the vow renewal.

T ell us about your dress, attire, color concept/ theme. H ow did you decide on that look and fe el for the day? e wanted to be comfortable first and foremost. chose to wear a champagne colored A-line wrap dress and Sam chose to wear tan pants and a green collared shirt. I asked my three daughters to stand with us as we said our vows. I let them pick out dresses that they liked.

My color palette was neutral. The backyard setting was gorgeous, and I wanted everything to just enhance the evening but not take away from the natural setting.

What was the most stressful as pect leading up to the wedding?

The most stressful part of planning was twofold actually. I work with my sister, Suzie, at PacWest Blooms. We do weddings and events for a living and with the California Covid-19 restrictions being lifted for events in J une 2021, our business went from 0 to 300 really quick! Our retail business was already bustling but the opening of the 2021 Wedding Season was unprecedented, and I had a hard time thinking about my event.

Secondly, since we are in the industry and see many types of events I didn’t want to overdo or create something that didn’t reflect our personalities.

Did you have to put out fires during the event?

Z ero problems! I had the best team on my side with PacWest Blooms and my family coordinating everything!

Why did you choose your ceremony and reception venues?

I chose my sister’s house for a couple of reasons. Covid-19 was still affecting how we held celebrations at restaurants, and since we were having our celebration on a Tuesday evening, we wanted to keep everything in one location.

I kept everything simple! All decisions were made ahead of time and my planners (Su zie and Brian) could make the best decisions on my behalf because we had already discussed what I wanted.

Hire a wedding coordinator! All weddings, no matter the size, have a lot of moving parts. No t having to worry about vendor management was a huge relief for me.

Having a professional that can execute your vision from beginning to end is gold.

We are not much for planning or for detail. We had a fairly big wedding here in Carpinteria with around 140 people. It was a simple, beautiful celebration of our love and marriage – a joyful party surrounded by family and friends.

Initially, we were going to have our reception indoors to cut costs on rentals, but in the end, we decided to have our entire wedding outdoors to enjoy the fresh air and allow for greater distancing. Dancing the night away under the string lighting and stars was the perfect ending to the evening.

The moment right after we were pronounced husband and wife. We walked down the aisle hand in hand to the chorus of “True” by George Strait and embraced while our bridal party funneled into the room, cheering all around us. Our wedding coordinator, Suzie, took an amazing video of this moment, and we are so thankful she captured it for us.

We wanted to personalize our ceremony through writing our own vows to one another and we incorporated our love for fishing through our cake topper and cookie theme that served as our thank you gifts.

Amanda fell in love with her dress the moment she saw it on the mannequin and had to wait almost two years to wear it on the special day. The color scheme was quartz and navy, and we aimed to tie this into our simple, rustic décor.

The most stressful aspect leading up to the wedding was hoping that local guidelines would allow us to have our ceremony. Initially, we were supposed to be married in September 2020 but had to postpone. Acceptance of things beyond our control was helpful, and our decision to have the entire wedding outdoors helped to better solidify the moving pieces that remained.

We chose Lions Park for our venue due to its beautiful, local outdoor location where we could comfortably have our ceremony and reception. It’s an affordable location, and we highly recommend considering them for your wedding or event.

Kat was organized and so helpful with personalizing the space. Our coordinator, Suzie, helped bring the vision to life with her rentals (the arch was a showstopper) and color scheme.

The part of the meal that people enjoyed the most was the scalloped potato dish.

We loved our menu and had a private tasting with the caterer beforehand to note our favorites and handcraft our selections.

We had our ceremony and reception at one location to reduce stress and increase the amount of time we could spend visiting and having fun. Additionally, we crafted our playlist and music in a way that kept the dance floor full all night long

NOTES ON THE DAY… T ell us about the wedding you dreamed of and then the wedding that you had.

Jo n and I had our wedding date set to be April 8, 2021. We were going to have over 200 of our closest family and friends.

J on played baseball at Virginia Tech so we had plans for all his buddies to fly out to California and join us for the celebration.

Our wedding was going to be held at Rincon Beach Club in Carpinteria. It is a beautiful rustic outdoor venue. J on and I held out as long as possible, but due to Covid, my husband and I chose to elope with our parents and siblings by our side.

We postponed our reception with all our extended friends and family to this coming April 8, 2022, which will be our one-year anniversary!

Even though we postponed our celebration with our favorite friends and family, we were adamant about still marrying one another. That is why we decided to elope. We had eight of the

most wonderful people in our lives there to witness our marriage: our parents, our siblings and my grandpa. We held the elopement with the help and coordination of PacWest Blooms at Ellwood Bluffs in G oleta. It was a perfect California day that was filled with so much love. ven though we were not able to have our extended friends and family, J on and I were blessed with sharing our intimate vows with our immediate family at our side. I truly could not have pictured a more perfect day and evening with my new husband and our beautiful families. I reminisce everyday about our wedding.

Are there any ways that you think your wedding was even better f or these odifi ations?

Truthfully, the day of the elopement was pure bliss. I woke up that morning feeling overwhelmed with so much gratitude. Having only brothers, I got to get ready the morning of with just my mom.

It was so special. We shared so many tears and hugs. That afternoon, I married the most kind and caring man. It was

simple, beautiful and perfect. We shared our vows with just our intimidate family, popped champagne and then spent an evening indulging in delicious food and drinks at the Angel Oak restaurant at Ritz-Carlton Bacara. The intimacy of this elopement was more than I could have ever fathomed.

The most stressful aspect leading up to the wedding was the constant back and forth on whether or not we should go ahead with the wedding or put it off another year. It is so heartbreaking and difficult to make that decision when you have already booked vendors and envisioned your wedding day. I remember before ultimately deciding to push back the wedding, I would say to my husband, “let’s just wait one more day, just one more day before deciding.” J on and I both have the most amazing set of friends and family who constantly encouraged and supported us with whatever decision we made. After now pushing back the wedding and having the elopement, I would have not done it any other way.

With the incredible help of my beautiful mother and PacWest Blooms, we brainstormed ideas to create a beautiful elopement setting on the Ellwood Bluffs.

We kept the colors neutral and brought out a burlap rug chairs and florals to decorate an open, outdoor area we scoped out days prior. We had a small table on the left that chilled champagne, beers and held our wedding cake. It was simply perfect!

twice, walk down the aisle with my dad twice, and marry my best friend all over again with all our friends and family.

Why did you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they work well with your vision?

Our elopement was held on the Ellwood Bluffs in G oleta. Y ou can’t compete with the beauty of this area. We had perfect blue skies and views of both the mountains and the ocean. We were surrounded by our family and a big open field. t was truly picture perfect. hen scoping out the area we originally chose a section on the bluffs overlooking the ocean, however the wind had different plans. At the last minute, PacWest Blooms set up closer to the open field facing the mountains. The views that were captured were stunning. The area is a dream and highly recommend it to anyone looking to elope.

What part of the meal did people enjoy m ost?

After our beautiful sunset elopement on the bluffs, we cruised over to the RitzCarlton Bacara with our families. We indulged in wonderful appetizers and main courses at Angel Oak. We loved every bite of food we ate. The scallops were amazing and my brother-in-law got the A Japanese agyu. ow t melted in your mouth like butter. So, so delicious! would not change a thing

What is your top piece of advice f or couples planning a wedding?

The wedding day that you have been diligently planning and preparing for goes by so fast. My best piece of advice is to truly take in every single moment of the day and be present. Really look around at everyone who is there and think about how much they mean to you.

Take in how much you love your significant other and how amazing you feel at that very moment. Y our wedding day is the beginning of a beautiful adventure with the person you love.
