CMS gun threat leads to student arrest

A Carpinteria Middle School student who allegedly threatened violence with a firearm on Feb. 23 was arrested later that day. Deputies from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office investigated the report of a 13-year-old overheard by fellow students making threats. He was charged with making criminal threats and booked into Santa Maria Juvenile Hall. No operable firearms were located during a search of his home.

School staff alerted parents of the incident earlier in the day, and the Sheriff’s Department increased patrols across all Carpinteria schools this week. Anyone with information about a threat to a school is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office and school staff immediately.

Debris dumping ends at Ash beach

Debris dumping has concluded at Carpinteria and Goleta beaches, where about 12 percent of the total 18,000 truckloads of debris that flooded Montecito and Carpinteria on Jan. 9 was sent. Trucks ceased dumping mud onto Ash beach on Feb. 9, and the permit for the activity expired last week.

Material deposited in the ocean was pre-sorted and inspected to remove large rocks, trash and vegetation before dumping. The sediment placed at both beaches was tested by an independent laboratory and met all guidelines set by the Central Coast Water Board. Due to high bacteria levels, however, ocean waters at Goleta Beach and Carpinteria Beach at Ash Avenue have been closed to the public since Jan. 11.

A rainstorm predicted to drop 1 to 3 inches between late Thursday, March 1 and Saturday, March 3 wouldn’t normally raise eyebrows in wintertime Carpinteria, but the devastation wrought by the Thomas Fire debris flows has emergency officials carefully watching the foothills. Stuart Seto, a weather specialist with the National Weather Service, described a possible hourly rate of rainfall of up to a 1/2 inch late Thursday night or very early Friday morning in the upper foothills of the Santa Ynez mountains, which meets the U.S. Geologic Survey’s threshold for debris flows.

“Storms tend to slow down at Lompoc,” Seto added, “rounding the corner (at Point Conception).”

The County of Santa Barbara has issued a recommended evacuation order for high risk areas, effective Wednesday, Feb. 28. Additional evacuation information will be provided by the County of Santa Barbara by 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28. If a Mandatory Evacuation Order is issued, all persons must be out of the designated areas by Thursday, March 1 at 9 a.m.

More marsh dredging planned

County Public Works plans to remove the remaining sediment in the Carpinteria Salt Marsh that resulted from the Jan. 9 storm. Permitted by the Army Corps of Engineers, hydraulic dredging will be used to remove sediment within the marsh and discharge them into the surf zone at the mouth of the marsh via a pipeline from the dredge. No other activity is allowed by the permit. The dredging project will begin in two weeks and must be completed by April 15. The County’s Public Health Department will also test the ocean waters near the mouth of the marsh. “We are highly concerned about future storms that could cause debris flows similar to the 1/9 event, requiring additional debris removal efforts,” said Scott McGolpin, Director of Public Works for Santa Barbara County.

Becker well capped—a century later

The Becker well has leaked its last bit of toxic, tarry oil on Summerland beach. After years of beach closures and funds seeking, the oil well that was abandoned in the late 1800s is finally being properly remediated by the State Lands Commission this week at a cost of $1.4 million. Summerland Beach has approximately 191 additional uncapped wells, but Becker was identified as the worst culprit and is believed to have polluted the beach and near-shore waters with leaking oil for decades. Survey work by the State Lands and Heal the Ocean exposed the severity and extent of the

problem of the uncapped well. a bill authored by Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson and signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown in 2017 will require the State Lands to monitor and plug old “orphaned” oil wells throughout California waters. The original oil company that operated the well no longer exists and cannot be held responsible. The bill also directs up to $2 million dollars annually, derived from state mineral leases, to a fund set aside for the remediation of improperly abandoned legacy wells.

A dog park is overdue, residents tell city council

A treasured citizen

With the sad passing of Bill Swing, Carpinteria lost a treasured citizen. Bill’s legacy will long be an important part of our sports history, well documented with the hundreds of outstanding photos he so enjoyed taking of our young athletes at Carpinteria High and Cate School.

His contributions to us include helping to keep us safe during his long ago years with the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Department. I met Bill in the early 1960s and watched him at work when a toxic spill closed the freeway on the east end of Carpinteria. A few of us from the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary were called out in the wee hours of the morning; we set up tables on the side of the road with donuts and coffee in support of “our men.” By dawn we had light to watch the firefighters, including Bill Swing, cleaning up the spill. When Bill met Rosana, he brought her to our home to introduce her and we were witnesses to his transformation from footloose and fancy free bachelor to falling wildly in love and marrying the lovely Rosana. Condolences to Bill’s wife Rosana and their son, Tyson. RIP, Bill.

Recently, I asked a high school teacher about arming teachers with guns. The teacher said that it is a bad idea because overworked educators often want to murder unruly students. And secondly, unruly students would find a way to get their hands on the gun.

In CVN’s Feb. 15 letter section, Allan Roscoe insulted the reader who very reasonably had expressed concern the prior week about the lack of information regarding the dumping of mud in Carpinteria. In fact, she never intimated it was an inconvenience; she did not attempt to compare the impacts of the dumping to those of the disaster victims.

She simply asked for more information on the timeline for dumping and the health impacts, and remarked upon the very real problems being experienced by those in the dumping neighborhood: health issues including eye, throat, nose, and breathing problems (as well as sick pets), and an inability to know the lengths of time for which such persons should have alternate housing; as well as serious income loss on rentals and an inability to plan for future rentals without information.

There was nothing disrespectful or self-centered in her very common concerns. Roscoe should think twice before jumping on his self-righteous soapbox— pettiness does nothing to help the community heal.

Seeking some peace of mind

As a parent, I am deeply concerned about the safety of our kids. Schools should be as safe as airports and The White House, but they are vulnerable every single day, and violent shootings seem to be the norm spreading like a disease.

Our kids and parents have the right to demand safety measures and funding to have peace of mind. The risk and danger of an incident is alive. Action needs to be taken as soon as possible.

If this week’s City Council meeting was any indication, the dog days of Carpinteria have arrived. Dozens of dog lovers filled the seats of the council chambers on the night of Feb. 26 with one request: create a dog park in Carpinteria.

“It’s an area where we’re behind the times,” said Marla Daily. “We’re a bagless city, but we don’t have a dog park.”

A few years ago, Daily and other locals began discussions with the city and Venoco Inc. to develop a dog park on a portion of the oil company’s property along Dump Road. Chevron acquired the property last year after Venoco’s bankruptcy, throwing the future of the land into uncertainty.

On Monday night, Daily suggested the city create a dog park at Rincon Preserve, the 23 acres newly acquired for public land at the east end of Carpinteria Avenue. She also said that the strip of city property between The Spot and the railroad tracks should be considered.

Legally, the council couldn’t discuss a dog park at this week’s meeting because

it wasn’t on the agenda. Nonetheless, passionate local residents used the public comment period to advocate for a place their pets could run free.

“This is the year of the dog, and we’d like to make it the year of the dog park in Carpinteria,” local dog owner Van Fleisher told the council.

Some dog owners allow their animals to be off leash illegally at local parks and beaches, a violation punishable by citation. The closest designated off-leash area is in Toro Canyon Park, a Santa Barbara County facility several miles outside of the City of Carpinteria.

Sharon Webb, a professional dog walker who spoke at the council meeting in favor of an off-leash area in Carpinteria, said that she avoids Toro Canyon with dogs in her care due to the risks presented by myriad gopher holes and burrs. “All my dogs are from tax-paying families, and they want their dogs to get exercise—to run,” Webb said.

Supportive of the concept, Councilmen Al Clark and Gregg Carty asked city staff to put a dog park discussion on an upcoming meeting agenda.

Despite more services, homeless population stays static Local efforts to reduce the homeless population have intensified in recent years, but about 20 chronically homeless people still haunt the streets of Carpinteria. The city council heard a homeless report this week that highlighted the challenges of getting people into housing despite mental illness and substance abuse issues.

Never before have so many resources been dedicated to the homeless issue in Carpinteria. Central Coast Collaborative on Homelessness (C3H), an organization that coordinates homeless efforts countywide, works with the city, law enforcement, volunteers, churches and other groups aimed at providing services for the homeless population and ultimately reducing the number of people living on the streets. Weekly meetings are held, and the efforts range from the immediate need to minimize violent conflicts and environmental impacts of the homeless, and the longterm need to identify housing solutions.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department receives 40 to 50 calls monthly related to the homeless in Carpinteria. In 2017, the combined number of homeless arrests and citations in the city was 179, slightly less than the 185

calls in 2016. Deputy Adam Alegria said that arrests were higher in 2016, while citations were higher in 2017. “If we can spend less time dealing with issues related to homeless people, we can spend more time patrolling the community,” he told the city council.

City Manager Dave Durflinger told the council that he is optimistic about achieving more success with homeless issues this year. He didn’t elaborate on why but did note that finding long-term housing for homeless has proven to be far less costly than the public expense incurred by individuals living on the street, which includes emergency medical care and jail time.

“I don’t think the services are working,” Councilman Gregg Carty said.

It’s frustrating, he said, to see resources repeatedly dedicated to individuals who fail to appreciate the help or follow through with the efforts made on their behalf.

Travis Baxter of United Way said that he avoids frustration by recognizing that the people he deals with are the “tough cases,” the individuals who have persisted on the street despite numerous efforts to improve their situation.

Thomas Disaster: Past, present, future Part four of four

By Erin MakEr, City of CarpintEria EnvironMEntal Coordinator Emergency preparedness and response, as well as long-term mitigation, is full-time, year-round work involving multiple agencies. The two main components of these efforts are: 1) emergency work to be completed immediately, and 2) long-term projects and planning.

In the days following the debris flows, public works crews from the City of Carpinteria, Caltrans and the County of Santa Barbara performed emergency clearing work on roads, debris basins and creeks to prevent further flooding. Utility companies also performed emergency work on water, gas, power and communications lines.

Long-term projects include replacing the bridges that were damaged along Highway 192, and work being done to mitigate the impacts of road closures and increased truck traffic. Commute times are longer, and local businesses and residents along frontage roads are frustrated with commuters leaving the freeway and using surface streets. These problems will not be going away anytime soon,

Starting April 2, Amtrak trains will be re-timed to make it easier for commuters to take the train, in addition to bus services already available. but transportation planners and traffic engineers are looking at ways to increase alternative transportation options and keep through traffic off surface streets.

Other long-term planning includes to mitigation of flood impacts in vulnerable areas both in and out of creek corridors, as well as public infrastructure and private property recovery. Some projects are already moving forward, but after a major disaster it can take years to recover. Life has returned to normal for many people, but for some life may never return to the way it was prior to December and

January.

It is important to keep that in mind as we move forward. Continue to support local businesses, understand that commute times are longer and either plan your schedule around that or find alternative solutions. Starting April 2,

Amtrak trains will be re-timed to make it easier for commuters to take the train, in addition to bus services already available. Many employers offer incentives for taking alternative transportation.

We can’t accurately predict the future, but we can try to plan for the known impacts of disasters. Some of the changes that have been made locally in the aftermath of Jan. 9 may end up being incorporated into the way we plan for emergencies not just locally, but all over the country as well. Severe ash damage from the Thomas Fire, worsened by leaks from the powerful rains that caused the debris flows, forced Gina and blake Andrews to close their Linden Avenue shop, Bon Fortune, for the past two months. Cut off from Carpinteria from their home in Santa Barbara, the Andrewses were unable to begin clean up until Highway 101 opened, but the need to re-paint and replace inventory offered the husband-and-wife team the opportunity to rethink their merchandising and expand their retail offerings of celebration supplies, stationary and seasonal goods to include more toys, books and gifts for all ages.

The couple’s notes on the day: Is there a moment from your wedding that stands out from all the others in your memory? Describe it and explain why it meant so much to you.

Diana: Hearing the music come on and knowing it was my turn to walk down the aisle with my dad. I had tunnel vision and was only looking at Morgan. In the middle of our ceremony we were able to pause, turn and lock eyes with all of our family and friends and thank them for being there to celebrate with us. This was incredibly special and humbling knowing everyone was there for us and there to support our next step as husband and wife.

Morgan: The weather was absolutely perfect as I was standing under the arbor. Hearing the music come on and seeing Diana for the first time as she was coming down the aisle is a memory that stands out from the rest. It was surreal and better than I could have ever imagined. It signified the realness of what was to come, the beginning of our journey as husband and wife.

What did your guests say was their favorite facet of the event?

Diana: The ceremony, hands down. Almost everyone said it was one of the best ceremonies they’ve ever attended and that our friend Danny did an amazing job officiating and capturing who we are as individuals, as well as the love and connection between us. They also said it was perfect weather and a beautiful venue which really helped set the mood for the entire day.

Did your wedding include special details that reflected your individual personalities?

Diana: Both Morgan and I love to be outdoors (especially at the beach or hiking) and travel and love our dogs. We are also obsessed with sunsets. One of our favorite places to go is Hawaii. We incorporated these things by placing pictures of our travels at the guest sign in table, used a Hawaiian/beachy theme throughout our wedding (can be seen in the bouquets, men’s leis, table settings and arbor), and picked green as our color to represent our love for nature. We also had my 12-year-old black lab, Pongo, as our ring bearer.

What was most stressful leading up to the wedding? How did you cope with that stress?

Diana: Finding a dress! I am already an indecisive person as it, but I was in the middle of studying for my Physical Therapy Board Exam and finding a dress was not a priority. Finally I found one less than two months from our wedding day.

Did you have to put out fires during the event? Looking back, could those have been prevented?

Diana: No! Everything was so smooth and fell into place perfectly.

Why did you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they work well with your vision?

Diana: We have both ran, hiked and taken our dogs to Elings Park for the last 10 years and felt that this was a perfect place to represent us both as a couple and as individuals and our love for Santa Barbara County (where we met). Not only that, it has amazing views of both the ocean and mountains, our two favorite things, and a place we could watch the sunset!

What part of the meal did people enjoy most? Was there anything on the menu that you would skip if you had a redo?

Diana: DJ’s California Catering killed it! The entire meal was amazing.

Their bartenders did a fantastic job preparing our requested signature cocktails and serving at our open bar. They were also the set-up and clean-up crew and were so professional. Everyone commented on how great the service was. And it was so cool to hear the staff say that this was one of the best groups of people they’ve been able to serve and that there was such a great vibe; they could really feel the love and connection between everyone.

Weddings can end up feeling like they’re for the guests instead of the bride and groom. What did you do to ensure that the day was wonderful for you?

Diana: For starters we planned the entire wedding ourselves. The venue, food, florals, décor, etc. were all things that we loved and felt represented us. Secondly, we told each other to stop every so often to make sure we were present in the moment and take everything in.

What is your top piece of advice for couples planning a wedding?

Diana: Take your time, there is no rush and start talking to your family and friends who have already planned a wedding! I had plenty of time to plan (a year), and that’s probably why I didn’t feel stressed. And my friends and family were a great help. Start by prioritizing (venue, food, photography, etc) what is most important to have at your wedding; this will immensely help you to stay within your budget, as well as focus on what will make the day perfect for you.

Get a day-of coordinator so you can actually enjoy your special day! I enjoyed planning all the details leading up to the wedding; however, if this is something that is stressful for you, hire a coordinator to do all the planning as well.

Winter disasters spark a volunteer’s comeback CVn

What does that group do?

We focus on enrichment programs including assemblies, field trips and bringing experiences to the school, such as Zoo to You. We also help pay for science camp for fifth-graders and swimming lessons for third-graders, and we raise money for equipment like iPads for classrooms. We fill in wherever necessary.

barbara dunlap Jaime Diamond slowed down her busy volunteer schedule when her third child was born nine months ago, but that quickly changed after this winter’s twin disasters. Fellow Carpinterian Jessica Clark put out a call to help locals affected by the fire and mudslides, and as Diamond said, “That was my comeback into volunteerism.”

Clark convened a meeting in January to brainstorm about people’s most important needs, and the result was the Carpinteria Food Pantry. The pantry has held three community events so far, which resulted in the distribution of several hundred bags brimming with groceries.

Diamond gives credit to Clark, the staff at the Carpinteria Children’s Project and the many volunteers and donors, while Marybeth Carty, who also worked on the pantry, praises Diamond’s contribution.

“I’m so impressed with her capability, commitment and calm demeanor,” Carty said. “Jaime came up with the idea to gather food for those folks who needed it. She started a Facebook page, got the word out far and wide, started collecting money and groceries and shopped for tons and tons of food.”

Here’s a closer look at the Diamond’s involvement with the food pantry, as well as her other volunteer activities.

How did the concept of the Carpinteria Food Pantry begin?

At the brainstorming meeting, we discussed how to identify needs in Carp and realized the schools had been closed for six weeks—for the fire, winter break and then the flooding. Families rely on the free (and reduced cost) lunch program at the schools, and a lot of parents couldn’t work as well—construction workers, landscapers, other people who work outside and people who couldn’t get north to work.

Some who didn’t struggle before now weren’t getting a paycheck, which affected their ability to pay bills and feed their families. We thought, “What can we do?” and we came up with the idea of a food pantry. It wasn’t a way to alleviate the problem completely, but we wanted to relieve the burden.

What happened next?

Jessica (Clark) met with the Carpinteria Children’s Project, which agreed to receive 501(c)(3) donations on our behalf. I put out a call on social media and started the Carpinteria Food Pantry Facebook

It was beautiful how it all came together. We would run out of three different things to put in bags, and someone would come in with 20 of each thing. We would need people, and 10 would show up.

They would say, “We’re ready to help.”

A week later we had our first event.

We gave out over 260 bags of groceries.

We had significant monetary donations from companies and individuals. People from other cities donated. There were too many partners to name.

How do people qualify to receive a bag filled with groceries?

The biggest part is that the events are open to anyone who is having a tough time—people who already needed assistance and also people for whom the bottom fell out during the last month and a half. You don’t have to show you need help. You aren’t turned away for any reason.

Why has the pantry come together so well?

It’s been a group effort. I keep saying, “Many hands make light work.” It makes it a joy to do it. People come in and say, “I need to help because it will help me.”

We’ve all been living with this level of anxiety. It’s cathartic to help others, and giving someone else the opportunity to do it helps them heal.

Will the pantry continue to operate?

It’s not a forever program, at least for us. (The last event is planned for March 2.) But if we have another disaster, God

Natural History Notes

Carpinteria harbor seals typically give birth to a single pup between mid-February to mid-March. Once they become fertilized, there is a delay in implantation of the fetus that lasts about 2.5 months. Implantation then resumes, and the pup develops for about eight to nine months. At birth, usually on land, the pup gushes out suddenly. Gulls are attracted to the birth, and that is usually how volunteers know a pup has arrived. An actual birth is rarely seen by watchers as it occurs so quickly. Mothers nurse their pups for about four to six weeks, during which time the pup grows rapidly.

Celebs honor first responders at Kick Ash Bash PHOTOS BY ROBIN KARLSSON The stage at last weekend’s Kick Ash Bash lit up with Hollywood elites who also call the Santa Barbara area home. Held at Pat Nesbitt’s Summerland ranch on Feb. 25, the event served to thank first responders who put their own lives on the line to save the lives and property of others. Stretching from afternoon deep into evening, the bash included food and drinks donated from area restaurants and breweries, games and carnival rides, and a stage that saw world class performers including Katy Perry, Kenny Loggins, Ellen DeGeneres, Dennis Miller, Glen Phillips, David Crosby and Michael Keaton. Carpinteria’s own world-famous Dishwalla played, along with the Santa Barbara Youth Ensemble choir.

Zeus wins in Western Bonanza Show

Emily Garcia and her steer Zeus took first place in the AOC Reserve Grand Champion prospect steer division at the Western bonanza Junior Livestock Show held over President’s Day weekend at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

Garcia, a 2017 graduate of Carpinteria High School where she participated in FFA, is now involved with the Grange of Santa Clara Valley. Zeus, who is housed in Carpinteria, has a distinctive, soft coat typical of a particular bloodline, and Garcia notes that the steer’s sire was a “well-built”

animal. Participating in as many events as possible leading up to the Ventura County Fair this August, Garcia hopes that Zeus will become well acclimated to the hustle and bustle of large crowds for a good show. Zeus has been raised for slaughter and will be auctioned to the highest bidder at the county fair. Currently studying at Ventura College, Garcia hopes to transfer to Cal Poly SLO to study agriculture education and become an FFA instructor.

“Oh my god, Emma, it’s all gone up in flames.”

this is how Emma Gonzalez learned that she’d lost her home in the hills between Carpinteria and ojai. her husband, Joe, uttered the words into his cell phone at around 1 a.m. on sunday, Dec. 10, while he watched the thomas Fire consume their home of 25 years.

Emma had safely evacuated to a friend’s house in Carpinteria with their 16-year-old son Gus, while Joe and his adult son tony had stayed on the land in hopes of saving the house and protecting the 25 head of cattle they weren’t able to evacuate.

While Emma paced in the darkness between phone calls from Joe, she dedicated her thoughts to the perils facing her husband and step-son, and the animals she’d had to leave, the cattle and chickens. it wasn’t until weeks later that the reality of losing a well-loved home and all her possessions would sink in.

When the Gonzalezes moved miles into the mountains by dirt road, they converted an old railroad tool car into a small home. over the years, they added a bathhouse and a guesthouse, and small cabins to create spaces for Gus and tony.

Emma cultivated a beautiful garden of fruit trees, vegetables and flowers, with her chickens and turkey in a run nearby.

Regarding the risk of fire, Emma said they had a false sense of security. Every year, fire officials visited the land, complimenting the Gonzalezes on the clearance of brush around structures and assuring them there was little risk of a fire reaching them. But that was before the thomas Fire redefined California wildfire—burning nearly 282,000 acres and destroying over 1,000 structures.

Joe, who has owned and operated Gonzalez Welding for 43 years, understands the power of heat. He knew that the fire wasn’t far off and that winds were predicted that night. nonetheless he stayed to keep the cattle safe, telling Emma, “if i go down, i’ll go down with the cows.”

Before midnight on Dec. 9, Joe went outside and saw, about a ¼-mile away, firefighters fleeing a burning bulldozer while flames danced along the nearby ridge. he drove down to fetch tony from his cabin at the lower part of the property, and by the time he returned to his house 15 minutes later, flames had covered Gus’ cabin. to hear one another, he and Tony had to yell over the roar of the fire, which quickly leapt to Joe’s hay-loaded truck. he let the truck go and turned the hoses on flames threatening a tree he had planted for his late son Andy. (the tree survived.) in an effort to protect the main house, Joe got his dozer running and tried to push Gus’ cabin off the hill and away from the boxcar, but the building col-

Joe, emma and Gus Gonzalez lapsed and the fire exploded toward him. he and tony climbed into a car, turned on the air conditioning and drove down to the cattle. they threw a bale of hay in the middle of the corral and waited for the fire to pass around them.

Emma had grabbed some clothes, her cat and some art off the walls before she left the mountain. she had evacuated her mules to the santa Barbara polo & Racquet Club, but by the time Joe called from the belly of the fire, she realized that

even the polo Club might not be safe for much longer. she woke up Gus and handed him the keys to the 1-ton mule trailer. though just a teen, Gus had grown up on the ranch. he rose to the occasion, Emma said, expertly maneuvering the empty trailer along winding roads to the polo Club. once the mules were loaded, Emma and Gus drove them to a friend’s in los olivos. in the days that followed the loss of her

home, Emma slowly absorbed the devastation. initially overcome by gratitude for the safety of her family and beloved animals, she slowly awakened to the reality of life after the fire. A home that she and her family had built piece by piece over 25 years, gone in one night.

And then there’s the loss that stretches even farther—the objects steeped in a half-century of memories. the fire claimed a collection of indian blankets and jewelry, an antique gun collection, about 45 trophy belt buckles from rodeos and three bronze trophies.

Recovery will be slow.

On the heels of the fire came holidays and floods, all of which affected business at the welding shop. the Gonzalez home was uninsured, so no big checks are in the mail. A week after the fire, with nothing left for their cattle to graze, the Gonzalezes sold them for “pennies on the dollar.”

Emma submitted an application to FEMA, which awards a maximum of $30,000 to disaster victims. Friends have lent the family campers to live in on the land, and they’ve arrived en masse for “work parties” that are really just work and not much party, Emma said with a smile. “We’re clawing our way back up,” she concluded to contribute to the Gonzalez effort to rebuilt, visit https://www.paypal.com/ pools/c/820uZyv0Cm

After a successful tenure with the Ellen Easton Gallery in Santa Barbara, Carpinteriabased plein air painter Whitney Brooks Abbott will have her inaugural exhibition of works, “Resolution,” with Sullivan Goss Gallery beginning March 1 and running through April 29 at 11 East Anapamu Street, Santa Barbara. An opening will be held at the gallery on Thursday, March 1, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Through evacuations from the Thomas Fire and preparation for the floods, Brooks Abbott added paintings to the exhibition that include smoke-diffused light, ashen hills, brooding clouds and alluvial plains. The paintings portray a resolution of nature’s drama: trees are still standing, fields are ready to be sown and the ocean continues to cleanse and renew itself while offering up a quiet place to contemplate beauty.

Brooks Abbott is a fine arts graduate of U.C. Santa Cruz. She also completed a fellowship at Yale School of Art. A second-generation member of the Oak Group, Brooks Abbott currently lives and paints in Carpinteria, and is a member of the Brooks and Abbott families who have farmed the area for many generations.

Small Business of the Year: Berkenmeier & Sugiyama

BY LEA BOYD Doctors Robert Berkenmeier and Janice Sugiyama opened their Carpinteria dental practice in order to move their 18-month-old daughter, Erin, out of Los Angeles and into a safe, tight-knit community. Thirty years and an idyllic Carpinteria childhood later, Erin has returned to Los Angeles while her parents have become Carpinterians through and through.

The pair of trusted dentists will be honored as owners of the 2017 Small Business of the Year at the Community Awards Banquet on March 10.

Though Berkenmeier and Sugiyama are grateful for the recognition, the couple didn’t develop a trusted practice and become active members of the community in order to put awards on their wall.

Working hard and giving back is simply part of their family ethos.

After graduating from University of

Southern California Dental School in 1984, the two dentists spent a few years in Los Angeles gaining experience before moving out of the big city and opening their own small town office. They purchased Dr. Earl Ness’ existing practice at 1066 Eugenia Way and introduced themselves to Carpinteria Creating a profitable small business takes time, and turning a one-dentist practice into a two-dentist practice presented an additional challenge. They worked long hours moonlighting in other dental offices, and Sugiyama, who had worked as a hygienist before dental school, continued to do so as a DDS to build relationships.

Women made up less than 10 percent of the Berkenmeier and Sugiyama’s graduating class at dental school in the early 1980s, and when they opened their Carpinteria practice, Sugiyama was sought out by patients who were more comfortable with a female dentist.

Women now account for about half of the dentists coming out of dental school.

Even when Berkenmeier and Sugiyama enjoyed a full roster of patients, they continued to offer more. They added a third treatment room in their office and underwent training to provide specialty services: molar root canals, implants and Invisaline. “We tried to provide a level of service that saved (our patients) a trip out of town,” said Sugiyama.

Over the years, they’ve participated in numerous dental associations and, with other local dentists, provided annual dental screenings to students in Carpinteria Unified School District.

Outside the dentist chair, Berkenmeier and Sugiyama dedicated themselves to the community—even in their earliest days in Carpinteria. Berkenmeier joined the Noon Rotary Club, serving as

president in 1995-1996. Sugiyama joined the Soroptimist Club, Carpinteria Valley Republican Women Federated and later the Morning Rotary Club. They became involved in Girls Inc. of Carpinteria and the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce, where Sugiyama was board president in 1993.

The year 2017 was a particularly good one for Berkenmeier and Sugiyama. They celebrated 30 years in business together as well as the marriage of their daughter.

And now they cap it off with the Small Business of the Year award from the Chamber of Commerce.

Sugiyama has reduced her work hours due to shoulder pain, but Berkenmeier still puts in 12-plus-hour days at the office. The 64-year-old, who works out regularly at Spark45, says that he’ll get to 70 before he gives serious thought to retirement.

Large Business of the Year: GranVida Senior Living and Memory Care

Walking into GranVida Senior Living and Memory Care is like stepping across continents and into an elegant European hotel—tasteful art on the wall, leather couches, shined wooden railings up the stairs, newspapers and magazines on the tables, a stone fireplace and a friendly “hello” from the kind-eyed woman behind the front desk. The refined-yetcomfortable atmosphere offers the first clue as to why GranVida was chosen by the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce as the 2017 Large Business of the Year.

Executive Director Catherine Lee is quick to correct the terminology related to GranVida. “We are not a facility. We are a community,” she told Coastal View News in the first moment of an interview.

And she’s exactly right; the word facility is cold and unwelcoming—two descriptors that don’t belong anywhere near GranVida.

The 77-apartment community located at 5464 Carpinteria Ave. currently hosts 47 residents who are cared for by 57 employees (“team members,” as Lee says). Residents range from 62 to 96.

Two couples live at GranVida, as do six cats and two dogs, who reside with their human companions.

The word “community” implies connections, and GranVida is full of them.

Half of the residents are from Carpinteria and have relationships with one another that span many decades. Friendly chatter rises from the clusters of residents and guests who eat meals communally in the dining areas. And in an expansive common room, residents gather for card games, book reading or to play the baby grand piano.

Fostering that sense of community is critical to Lee. She points to the Santa Barbara City College classes in art and music that are held onsite. The arts and crafts room, she said, is now a hot spot for the latest trend among residents—jewelry making. Movie nights are held regularly, and the bocce ball court enjoys some heated competition.

The GranVida bus transports residents on regular outings. Last week, they paid a visit to the Ronald Regan Presidential Library and the Santa Barbara Zoo. Above and beyond the amenities and activities, Lee said she is most proud

Every employee receives a two-day “Seniority Spirit” training which cultivates warmth and sincerity, along with anticipation and acknowledgement of needs. “We are here because we love serving seniors,” said Lee. “We do a lot of listening. We do a lot of laughing.”

Joyce Donaldson, CEO of the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce, noted that even before GranVida opened its doors in February 2017, the staff was involved in Carpinteria. “Consistently seeking opportunities to actively engage with the community, the staff has been instrumental in making their residents feel comfortably at home, while making certain they enjoy the coastal lifestyle in Carpinteria,” she said.

CHS boys soccer wallops Granite Hills in CIF semifinals

Buoyed by a raucous home crowd, the Warrior soccer team dominated the field Tuesday evening in a 3-0 CIF semifinal victory over Granite Hills of Apple Valley that qualified Carpinteria High School for the championship round.

First-time hosts of the CIF-Southern Section semifinal playoff match, the Carpinteria High School boys came out like a house on fire, scoring two first-half goals and knocking in a third in the 78th minute. “We’ve scored three goals in each of the postseason games,” said Quintero.

“Different players keep scoring; different players keep contributing.”

With 3-1 triumphs over Chadwick and St. Margaret’s, and a 3-0 win over University Prep of Victorville leading up to the victory on Feb. 27, Carpinteria advances into the CIF-SS Division Six final where they’ll take on Rubidoux of Riverside with the date, time and venue not yet released at print time.

The Warriors nearly got on the scoreboard in the opening moments of the game when Vincent Gonzalez landed a feed from Angel Orozco and booted the ball past Cougar keeper Wyatt Bodle only to be denied by the right post. But it wouldn’t take the home team much longer to reach the back of the net. Around the seventh minute, Orozco directed a ball from Gonzalez to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

“We haven’t lost at home this season,” said Quintero. “I think this play that we’ve created, this atmosphere, this chemistry that we have has to do with hard work over the season.”

Although Granite Hills would apply some pressure at the Carpinteria end, it was the Warriors who came away with the better opportunities. And near the 34-minute mark, Gonzalez slammed home the second goal of the game off a pass from Solomon Nahooikaika for a 2-0 lead going into the break.

The Cougars would attempt to claw their way back in the second half. In the 46th minute, an attempt by Armando Santana nearly trickled over the head of Carpinteria keeper Christian Estrada.

Then, in the 59th minute, Isiah Robertson found himself wide open in the Warrior area, but his shot ended up sailing over the head of Estrada. The Carpinteria goalkeeper ended up with seven saves for the game.

Alex Ramirez from 25 yards out hit the crossbar, and though the rebound bounced around near the Cougar goal it was eventually put away. Near the 66th minute, Luis Garcia’s long-range bullet was pushed aside by a diving Bodle to keep it at two-goal lead.

Before calling it a night, Solomon Nahooikaika found Gabe Barajas who deposited the ball into the goal to give Nahooikaika his second assist on the day and his team a 3-0 lead. “He (Nahooikaika) moved up to the right wing position about five weeks ago … we were able to find that right spot for him,” said Quintero.

Quintero, now in his sixth year as the Warriors coach, has a chance to bring home a championship. “We’ve been waiting for this moment,” he said. “Now we have one more game to finish it off.”

Win propels Warrior soccer to semifinals CVN RepoRt The fleet-footed Warrior soccer team advanced to CIF semifinals in a 3-0 victory over University Prep on Feb. 24. Playing to a supportive home crowd, the Warriors dominated ball possession for most of the opening half. Their first goal came in the 35th minute off a rebound shot from Gabriel Barajas that hit the crossbar and was cleaned up by Vincent Gonzalez for the score. Fifteen minutes later, a long pass from Barajas found Jose Jimenez who took two defenders down the right flank and snuck his shot through the near post and past the University Prep goalkeeper. Just a few minutes after goal number two, Gonzalez notched the Warriors’ third off a cross from Angel Orozco.

Goalkeeper Cristian Estrada finished the night with five saves. “Defensively we were strong tonight,” reported coach Leo Quintero. “Good defense creates great offense.”

The quarterfinal win came a few days after the team traveled to San Juan Capistrano to beat St. Margaret’s 3-1 on Feb. 21.

The Carpinteria AYSO Under-12 soccer team won first place in a tournament held over the weekend of Feb. 16 and 17. The team scored 13 goals in four games, while allowing only three goals on defense.

Nicknamed the Tigers, the young stars beat Bakersfield, 3-0, Saugus, 5-1, Encino, 3-1, and in the final game against Palmdale, 2-1. “This group of girls have been playing amazingly,” said Tiger supporter Sonia Aguila. The squad went into the tournament, knowing that they would be facing some tough teams from Northern and Southern California. “We did not only brought home first place, but we were also invited to another tournament in March, The Western States Championships,“ added Aguila. “I’m very proud of this group of girls,” said coach Pedro Casas.

February 23 - The Cate School boys tennis team lost its opening match of the 2018 season to the San Luis Obispo Tigers, 13-5. Number-one singles sophomore Ethan Ha won two sets and then the number-one doubles team of seniors Joseph Thomassen and Charlie Morris swept all three of their sets. Ha lost in a 7-6 tiebreaker to SLO’s singles senior Zak Hilty.

February 27 - The Cate School boys tennis team traveled to Santa Barbara, and lost, 10-8. Cate’s Number-one singles player, sophomore Ethan Ha, lead the Rams with a clean sweep, 7-6, 6-0 and 6-0. In doubles, Cate’s Number-one and two teams of, seniors Charlie Morris/Joseph Thomassen, and sophomores Parker May/Devin Pai both earned two sets for the Rams, respectively. Cate travels to San Marcos on Thursday.

February 27 – The Carpinteria High School softball team won a non-league home game versus Cabrillo by a score of 11-1. The Warriors put five runs across the plate on four hits in the second. “The big hit was Isabel Studt’s two-run triple,” said Warrior coach Henry Gonzales. Kayana Diaz had a three-run triple, and Jauslyn Richardson had an RBI double. After building a 10-1 lead, Carpinteria started the fifth with singles by Diaz, Mikayla Blair and Raquel Cordero, loading the bases for Amanda Blair. The next batter, Samantha Saenz, hit a deep fly ball to right field that scored Diaz from third, making the score 11-1 which ended the game on the 10-run rule after five innings.

February 27 – The Cate School boys volleyball team took a league win over Malibu in their first match of the season, sweeping the Sharks in three sets 25-17, 25-20 and 25-19. “The Rams’ offense was led by kill leaders junior Cullen Barber and sophomore Theo Mack who also balanced the team with their agile back row play,” said Cate coach K.C. Collins. Freshmen Albert Barber debuted as libero, leading in digs for the team. “Middle hitter junior Carson Williams also had a very strong showing, recording several blocks and consistently connecting on quick hits out of the middle,” added Collins.

Deborah Brittain scored two points, and Maya Blattberg knocked down one. “This semifinal game was one that the Rams did have the skill, grit and drive to win, as they were just some free throw makes away,” said Cate coach Amy Venditta. “The team works so well together, and every single member has played a role in the Rams’ success this season,” added Venditta, who should have a good number of underclassmen returning to the court next season.

Not by the park, please

On Jan. 19 at approximately 10 a.m. a deputy was dispatched to the train tracks near a park on the 300 block of Linden Avenue on a report of an intoxicated man urinating in public and exposing himself.

A mother of two small children called the Sheriff’s Office because her children and other kids in the park had seen the man when they ran over to the park railing to watch a passing train.

When the reporting deputy arrived, he stated that he had seen the 55-year-old man, listed as “transient” on the arrest report, earlier in the morning with numerous unopened “red and white beer cans” in a bag. The man appeared to be slightly intoxicated at that time. At the train tracks, the deputy saw a number of red and white beer cans strewn about, and the man appeared to be significantly more intoxicated than he had been earlier in the morning. The man said that he did not know why the deputy would have been called, and denied urinating or drinking in public. Another deputy was speaking with the mother who had called, and she signed a citizen’s arrest form and stated that this was an ongoing problem with the man. The reporting deputy arrested the man for indecent exposure and public intoxication and transported him to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Three’s a crowd

On Feb. 16 at approximately 5 p.m. a deputy responded to a report of people yelling on the 5000 block of Carpinteria Avenue. A 59-year-old woman and 60-year-old man were reportedly very intoxicated after sharing a fifth of vodka. A third man was with them, and the woman said that her friend did not like the man, and wanted him to leave and had begun yelling at him. The deputy arrested the man and woman for public intoxication and released the other man at the scene.

As he was placing the woman in the back of his patrol car with the man he had arrested, the deputy asked her if she had anything that she should not bring into the jail. The woman said that she had marijuana in her front pocket and the deputy removed “less than one ounce of marijuana and a small metal pipe” for safekeeping at the Carpinteria substation. The man and woman were then transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Abrasions

On Feb. 17 at approximately 7:15 p.m. a deputy was dispatched to Carpinteria Avenue and Rincon Road on a report of a drunk driver who crashed into two parked vehicles, injuring a man. “It should be noted,” the reporting deputy wrote, “at approximately 6:45 p.m. a citizen had called (the Sheriff’s Office) and informed them of a white SUV with a female driver who was seen stumbling into her vehicle and nearly hitting three parked cars as she drove away.”

The 66-year-old woman reportedly crashed into two parked vehicles, and a man who had been standing there got his arm caught between the two vehicles, but somehow only received “abrasions.”

A CHP officer on the scene reportedly stated that the woman admitted to drinking alcohol and appeared to be extremely intoxicated. The woman refused an alcohol screening test and said, “I can’t do that when I’m sober,” after the deputy had asked her to perform a “Walk and Turn” field sobriety test. A breath sample at Santa Barbara County Jail nearly two hours later revealed a blood alcohol level of .25 percent, more than three times the legal limit of .08 percent.

A workman’s compensation

On Feb. 19 at approximately 8 a.m. a deputy was dispatched to a business on Foothill Road for a burglary and possible suspect information. A man reported three chainsaws stolen from a locked construction box. He stated that he had employed a man briefly in the past week, but when the work was done and he told him that he didn’t need any more help, the man became angry. Describing him as a “tweaker,” the man who called the Sheriff’s Office provided his former worker’s name and phone number to the responding deputy. The deputy was unable to find any fingerprints and was unsuccessful in his attempt to contact the worker, but he documented the stolen items (totaling $3,900) and recommended that Sheriff’s detectives conduct a followup investigation.

Craigslist fraud

On Feb. 17 at approximately 5 p.m. a man and his son came to the Sheriff’s substation in Carpinteria to report a theft by fraud. The men had been shopping for a truck on Craigslist and they sent $3,800 via electronic payment through Bank of America to a person who gave her name as “Kathy Davis Lynn” in Jackson, Miss.

The woman had given the men an Ebay support phone number but after a couple of calls, the number no longer worked.

The reporting deputy advised the men that it was unlikely the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office would do much investigating as both the truck and the receiving bank were outside the state of California.

confirmed that the restraining order was still valid, then arrested the man and transported him to Santa Barbara County Jail for violating the restraining order.

Feigning a faint

On Feb. 20 at approximately 10 a.m. two deputies contacted a known female transient in front of the Carpinteria Library as they had been advised of outstanding misdemeanor warrants for her arrest. As the reporting deputy attempted to handcuff the woman, she told him that the weight of the cuffs would make her faint. She then became argumentative with the deputies, the report stated. Girls Inc. welcomes new board members

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria added new members Terri Allison, Orlando Hernandez and Lori Pearce to its Board of Trustees. “Our new additions to the Board of Trustees are leaders in the nonprofit/education, finance and technology sectors who demonstrate what it means to be strong, smart and bold—in both the workplace and the community,” said Victoria Juarez, executive director of Girls Inc. Carpinteria.

Allison co-founded Storyteller in 1988 and later became executive director of the nonprofit organization. She helped write the original grant asking for funds to provide care for homeless children while their parents looked for work—a grant that eventually led to the establishment of Storyteller Children’s Center. Since retiring from her position in 2015, Allison has been working as an early childhood education consultant for Transition House, the Santa Barbara Unified School District, and the Community Action Commission of Santa Barbara and other organizations.

Hernandez serves as a tax compliance officer, supervisor for the Internal Revenue Service. He brings more than three decades of experience working with the IRS, including serving as a certified instructor for the Service, teaching formal and informal classes nationwide. He attended Westmont College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and sociology.

Pearce is director of information technology and business operations at NuSil Technology, a global specialty silicone manufacturer. Throughout her time at the company, Pearce has cultivated a small information technology and support department and successfully developed it into a multi-national, mature operation. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Indiana University East and an associate degree in computer science from Santa Barbara City College. She is an active volunteer in the community with local schools and organizations including Carpinteria Valley Girls Softball, the Girl Scouts, and served on the Carpinteria Chamber of Commerce’s Board of Directors.

District Governor visits Sunset Rotary

District Governor John Weiss visited Sunset Rotary on Feb. 21 to discuss the objectives of Rotary, noting that people join the organization for two fundamental reasons: friendship and service. Weiss was joined by his wife Christine and two visiting Rotarians from Houston, Texas, who are working with Rotary’s Disaster Aid Response unit in Montecito. Sunset Rotarians also got an opportunity to give back, painting classrooms at the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club on President’s Day. Sunset Rotary always welcomes guests, and meets on the first and third Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. at Holiday Inn Express, 5606 Carpinteria Ave.

Rotarians head south of the border

Members of the Carpinteria Rotary Club recently made a project trip to Mexico led by members Debbie Murphy, Karen Glancy and Wade Nomura. The team traveled to five different states, 12 cities and 18 clubs in a seven-day “marathon” trip to find partner projects with Rotary clubs in Mexico. The trip was organized by Nomura, who is a Rotary ambassador for the region the club members visited. “This trip’s main goal is to have an opportunity to develop new friendships with Rotarians from our area, with Rotarians from Mexico, that will last a lifetime,” Nomura said.

Karen Glancy had her first experience with Rotary’s International program on the trip, and said, “It was a life-changing experience for me to see and experience Rotarians in action in Mexico, and see all the good they are doing. I will definitely be going back.” For Murphy, the trip was a return to the area of Mexico she had been to previously to visit communities and spend more time getting to know the area. The team will be returning to Mexico in the spring to continue to initiate Rotary projects.

After a somewhat tumultuous era at Carpinteria Middle School that saw more than 75 suspensions last year, Briggs said that he was interested in coming on as principal for the challenge of turning things around in terms of discipline.

“It’s hard for teachers (when students misbehave) in a class with 25 or 35 other kids they have to teach,” Briggs acknowledged, but went on to say that simply assigning them punishments like detention “doesn’t work.”

At Hueneme High School, Briggs said, he would ask his colleagues who were having trouble with certain students if they knew anything about the kids. When a teacher builds relationships with their students, he said, the children then know someone is advocating for them. “A red flag (behaviorally) means something is happening,” Briggs noted. “When you dig deeper, you can get them extra support.” Briggs looks forward to leading CMS in part because “with middle schoolers the cement is still wet in their brains” he said.

“Going to school is tough,” Briggs noted, “but it makes it easier if there

are other reasons why you’re there.” He added that he looks forward to expanding extracurricular activities for students at Carpinteria Middle School, including some woodshop courses, design and technical classes, and coordinating with Carpinteria High School Principal Gerardo Cornejo to create programs that would “line up” with established pathway certificate programs at the high school, such as culinary arts and other disciplines.

Having grown up in Ojai and going through the public schools there, Briggs said that his family didn’t put a big emphasis on education, but after about five years of differing jobs and vocations after high school—“ski bum,” commercial fisherman, car salesman and martial arts among them—he went to Ventura College then transferred to UCSB where he majored in environmental studies and philosophy. Intending to pursue a career in environmental law, a two weeks teaching engagement changed his trajectory.

Dr. Alex Pulido, a former Carpinteria Unified School District Trustee and lifelong educator, was so moved by the national conversation about Dreamers that he decided to share the story of his own life, “Alejandro, Ph.D., Son of a Dreamer, an Illegal Immigrant, Completes his Dream.”

Pulido’s life story, written in poignant vignettes, reaches back to his grandparents in Mexico and details how he learned the value of hard work growing up with his parents on ranches in Ventura County.

Young Pulido outgrew life on the ranch, so he joined the military before enrolling in college to become an educator. Once employed, he was struck by the social injustice toward Chicanos in schools and society at large. He became an activist in his community and joined marches led by Cesar Chavez, one of his heroes. Pulido observed that he would have to become a leader and decision-maker to implement real change. He earned his Ph.D. and realized his dream of becoming a school superintendent and later imparted his knowledge as a university professor.

I’ve been picking up stray pocketbooks and catching up on American classics. I’d never read any L’Amour, so I thought I’d hitch-up. In “Flint,” the eponymous main character left the West at the age of 17 after the violent death of his mentor. The Carpinteria Library Book Club will meet to discuss “The Snow Child”

by Eowyn Ivey on Wednesday, March 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the Carpinteria Library, 5141 Carpinteria Ave. The novel tells the story of a childless couple, Mabel and Jack, struggling to survive in the Alaskan frontier in the 1920s. Mabel rereads a Russian folktale about a snow maiden, and not long after, she and Jack encounter a frost-covered girl and her red fox mascot.

The girl changes their lives in a story that combines tragedy and hope. The book club is open to anyone interested in reading and discussing the book. Copies are available for borrow at the Carpinteria Library.

Annette Fisher flew to Knoxville, Tenn., the “Gateway to the Smoky Mountains,” to see her love Gunner Regan Raught—aka Baby G—and brought the Coastal View News along for a touch of the West Coast in the cradle of Appalachia.

The Cherokee people called the Knoxville area kuwanda’talun’yi (“Mulberry Place”) and became the dominate population, often warring with Creek and Shawnee tribes. After the Revolutionary war, Euro-American settlers began to inhabit the Tennessee Valley.

Located at the confluence of three major rivers—the Tennessee, Holston and French Broad—Knoxville thrived as a way station for travelers and migrants heading west. Flatboats, and later steamboats, enabled trade of local goods such as tobacco, corn and whiskey for cotton grown in the deep south.
