Nair is moving to Paso Robles at the end of the month. The 93-year-old community activist, retired real estate agent, author and advice columnist leaves her beloved beach community for the central coast wine country to be closer to her three daughters and extended family. While Nair’s smile will be missed, her candor, insight and humor will continue to have a presence in Carpinteria through her column “Life, Love and Manners,” which she will now write for Coastal View News readers from a distance.

TV Santa Barbara rolled out the red carpet for their 2019 Media Access Awards and 45th anniversary party at the Alcazar Theatre on Saturday, Feb. 23.

Coastal View News co-publisher Gary Dobbins was named the year’s Community Hero. Dobbins sits on the advisory board for TVSB, providing support and acting as a community ambassador for the organization. “We also wanted to celebrate his 25 years in publishing the Coastal View News, a free-to-the-public paper,” said Courtney Frazer, director of advancement for TVSB. “The Community Hero award commemorates the support he gives to Carpinteria.”

The sold-out event hosted local media personalities and advocates, including Carpinteria Councilmember Fred Shaw, Santa Barbara Mayor Cathy Murillo and Supervisors Das Williams and Gregg Hart. From Measure A to X: Councilmembers delineate spending priorities

The Feb. 25 City Council meeting displayed the efficiency of local government in Carpinteria. In a series of 5-0 votes, members dealt with issues ranging from bids for City Hall renovation and remediation, to Measure X spending priorities to the city’s environment-friendly pest control initiative.

City Manager Dave Durflinger led off the session with a detailed update on the progress of debris clearing work in the Santa Monica basin. In the aftermath of the December 2017 Thomas Fire, debris basins along the South Coast have struggled with frequent inflow.

Durflinger candidly acknowledged the difficulties of the process, saying “we’ve had some setbacks; every time we have a major storm, some new debris fills it up.” Calling the process “inherently dirty, regrettable but necessary,” the city manager lamented the mud tracked on to local streets. Councilmember Gregg Carty pointed to beach neighborhood residents’ dissatisfaction with duration of the work, saying people “look at those trucks and think it’s never-ending.”

Carty then inquired when Carpinterians can expect the project to conclude, and Durflinger was happy to report that the project will be completed by the middle of March. Mayor Wade Nomura, taking the long view, asked if there was “any plan for the future.” The city manager responded that his office was seeking a “permanent permit” to allow for future material transport needs.

The city will also use Measure A funds to match with state and national grants for capital projects. On a motion by Councilmember Roy Lee, seconded by Carty, and with no public comment, the council voted 5-0 to approve the resolution.

The council then turned to the question of authorizing bids for the City Hall remodel and remediation project.

Durflinger gave a short history of City Hall’s building woes, describing how upon construction in 1959 the expansive linoleum in the foyer was “stuck down” with asbestos. This original sin now requires a “significant remediation job,” the lion’s share of which will be paid for by the city’s insurance agreement with

Tragic death of cyclist ensnares city in lawsuit

Just before 1 p.m. on Oct. 22, 2017, 64-year-old Jana Whelan of Malibu was riding eastbound in the bike lane on Carpinteria Avenue approaching Reynolds Avenue when she lost control of her bicycle and fell to the ground. Whelan suffered severe head and facial trauma, and despite multiple surgeries, she died from her injuries on Nov. 4, 2017.

One year later, on Oct. 18, 2018, Whelan’s husband Corlandt T. Day filed a lawsuit against the city of Carpinteria, Southern Edison Company, Southern California Gas Company and Lyles Utility Construction, claiming that negligence and dangerous conditions of the public street had led to his late wife’s accidental death.

The complaint alleges that Whelan lost control of her bicycle when she came upon an “irregular, uneven, and dangerous depression” from “a defective ‘L’-shaped asphalt patch” that Lyles had applied on the roadway “on or near the day of the incident” while performing utility maintenance work involving trenching for the gas company. According to Whelan’s family, the patch caused a blind hazard to bicyclists riding eastbound, causing Whelan to lose control of her bike and suffer fatal injuries.

The city requested a dismissal from the

suit, but on Feb. 20 their demurrer was overruled by Santa Barbara Court Judge Pauline Maxwell. According to the lawyer representing the defendants, Michael Johnson of Griswold LaSalle Cobb Down & Gin, this motion marks only the very early stages of the suit, with discovery following in the near future.

“This was a tragic, tragic event, but we don’t believe there’s any culpability on the part of the defendants,” said Johnson.

“While we certainly feel for the family, we will be responding with a vigorous defense to this lawsuit.”

The city of Carpinteria remains a named defendant, but the city cannot be held financially responsible. When Lyons took out an encroachment permit to perform repairs in the public street, they were required to purchase complete liability insurance for the city, along with signing a comprehensive indemnity agreement.

“It’s a terrible tragedy and we empathize with the Whelan family’s loss,” said David Durflinger, city manager. “Like all cities in California, there are a lot of players that operate within the public street right-of-way… In this case, it’s the gas company… The contractors and the gas company are responding to this claim, not the city. There will be no financial liability from the city.”

Lloyd’s of London. Nomura, asking Durflinger when the insurance payment would be made, was told by Durflinger that Lloyd’s will “hand-deliver” the check at a meeting set for later in the week.

Quincon, Inc., having submitted the lowest bid of $2,579,844 (some $300,000 below the engineer’s estimate), received the contract. Carty asked for a rough timeline for the project and was told that it should be accomplished within 228 days. Councilmember Fred Shaw, chairing the session, moved to approve the contract with Quincon and authorize the construction budget. The council approved the bid by a 5-0 vote.

Measure X

Moving from Measure A to Measure X, the council agreed to authorize a special fund to incorporate Measure X spending into the regular budget, and to report annually on revenues and expenses. Measure X, approved by voters in November, provides funding for infrastructure improvements by adding 1.25 percent to the county’s current 7.75 percent sales tax. The Budget/Finance Committee (made up of Councilmembers Carty and Al Clark), recommended four desired programmatic spending priorities: law enforcement funding (adding a Community Resource Deputy position, increasing outreach to the business community, engaging more directly with homeless services); street/right of way maintenance; capital improvements; and the community services support program. With the estimated $1.8 million in additional funding, the council expressed hope that support be given to Friends of the Library, whose fund-raising has increasingly gone to maintaining basic

operating expenses. Measure X funding will now help to “not just keep the doors open,” but allow for additional library system spending as well.

Pest management

The council meeting concluded with the annual Integrated Pest Management report. Parks and Recreation Director Matthew Roberts testified to the community’s “state of the art way of dealing with unwanted pests with the least-toxic method possible,” pointing to the use of water rather than insecticides to eliminate aphids in the community garden. Roberts focused on the problem of Argentine ant infestation, characterizing them as “the bane of Carpinteria,” and emphasized the importance of non-toxic ant control.

Environmental and toxicity concerns were top of mind for council members.

Clark showed particular concern about glyphosate, the powerful herbicide used in Round-Up, and its possible carcinogenic effects. Roberts agreed with Clark’s concerns, stating “we always use the least amount possible,” stressing that applications have been made infrequently, and only in low-contact areas. Nomura argued for compacted soil aeration as a workable alternative to pesticide use.

Farewell Carpinteria

Farewell Carp. We’ve enjoyed you for five years. But on Feb. 1 this year, just as we walked to the rental office to re-up for two months next winter, trucks thundered in. Something snapped. Not again!

Last year we learned to sympathize with the debris dump. Flood abatement.

Clean silt. Beach enhancement—yes.

After the fire and the floods, we couldn’t complain. But this year we hoped for better—not roaring engines and incessant back-up beepers again. And now, there’s a seemingly permanent launching pad for mud a half block from our balcony.

We jumped in the car to search the coast, all the way to Torrey Pines, to discover next year’s replacement locale. Returning, we have to admit, nothing quite compares to Carp’s setting—the mountains, the flat long beaches, the Channel Island view, the small-town feel. But this year, detractions have mounted to a tipping point. Rain feels more threatening, there’s cannabis skunk in the air, and the sweetest little town in all of California, dumps mud into dark chocolate waves all over the beach that we drive 2,000 miles to stroll. Sorry, but suddenly we’ve had enough. Next year, we won’t brave our Minnesota winter without a break, but our savings for travel somewhere warm will not be spent here.

Recall is misguided

The CUSD recall effort of Maureen Claffey is misguided and fueled by emotion and misinformation. The claim that Claffey wants to get health benefits and that is why she ran for office is ridiculous.

Nobody wants to take money from the school budget. However, if only affluent people who can afford their own health care are board members, a certain slice of society is being excluded from that opportunity to serve on the school board.

The fact that Claffey has used the opportunity as a board member to speak out against the negative impacts of the cannabis operations in Carpinteria is relevant to the current situation. Carpinteria High School has been negatively affected by the grow operations. If there were no impacts to our community and all the paperwork were in order at that time, the board could contemplate changing the bylaws to allow accepting contributions from cannabis. That is not the case

now. The way that the board, through backwards channels, has tried to accept the money shows a lack of integrity on the part of the board and the groups that worked to make this happen. The big picture needs to be looked at here. We have a community problem that needs to be addressed. Claffey is not the problem. She is pointing out the problem. The board is dysfunctional. They cannot follow their own rules and there are different personal agendas and ideologies being pushed.

The CUSD board needs to look in the mirror and make some changes. Their behavior on these matters is not setting a good example.

Tired of school board members that waste time

One has only to watch the CUSD meetings to see that two board members are lacking considerable knowledge and ability to understand the general procedures, functions and policies of the board. They continually interfere with superfluous minutia, wasting an exorbitant amount of time with off-topic items and superfluous hyperbole and monologuing. They continue to disrupt and interfere without a positive outcome, legitimate suggestion or solution.

The board purpose is to seek to secure school finances and to provide for the needs of the students. In my opinion, Maureen Foley Claffey and Rogelio Delgado show an inability to work as a cohesive body. Their continual disruptions with the work at hand, due to their lack of understanding, causes other members to have to try and explain to them procedures. This is but one example.

As a parent, I question these two board members’ qualifications as it appears that although their intent and ideals may have virtue, they fail to see how their actions are detrimental and do not align with the purpose of the board. I would ask parents to become familiar with the ongoing issues, raise your voice and email your concerns. Just like our kids, board members need to attend these meetings having done their homework. You’ve wasted enough time, now put our kids first.

Advance care planning is one of the greatest gifts you can give your family.

One of the goals of Compassionate Care of Carpinteria, a program of Hospice of Santa Barbara, is to encourage as many Carpinterians as possible to fill out their Health Care Advance Directives.

Making decisions now about your personal health and end-of-life preferences will spare your family the agony, and many times conflicts, of trying to second guess your intentions. This lack of planning often creates family rifts when family members may be applying their own values to the situation instead of yours. This is all avoidable if you take some easy steps now.

What is especially hard to see, in the absence of a plan, is family members arguing about what should be done. Often this takes place at the most critical time in the hospital where tensions and emotions are running high. This should be a time that all the focus and love is directed toward the patient and, unfortunately, it diminishes the sacredness of the passing.

Advance Care Plans often get confused with other end-of-life planning, including wills, trusts and everything related to finances. An Advance Care Plan may be part of a living will/trust. While it is recommended to put all your affairs in order, an Advance Care Plan relates to everything concerning your personal health and end-of-life decisions. Your directive is a legal document that can/ should be included with your medical records. You should also choose a trusted family member or friend to serve as your health care agent or proxy.

Advance Care Plans are related to your personal values. For example, is it your main desire to live as long as possible regardless of your condition? Is it to have the best quality of life, as you see it? What if you are in a coma or have zero brain function? Do you want to undergo extreme life-saving measures or prefer, if possible, to spend your final days comfortably with friends and family? Do you prefer to stay alert but in pain or do you prefer pain medications even if they make you drowsy or even semi-conscious? There are no right or wrong answers to any of these questions, except what is right for you. These decisions are your choice but can certainly be

informed by your doctor, family members and friends.

Death is an important life event and should be treated as such. We plan for weddings, birthdays, graduations and the birth of a child; our own death should be no different. Michael David Franklin 9/24/1947–2/23/2019

Michael “Coyote” David Franklin was born on Sept. 24, 1947 in Santa Barbara, California to Alfred and Marga Franklin.

Raised in Carpinteria (Class of ’65), Michael Franklin died on Feb. 23, 2019, in Vallejo, California, where he had lived for more than 25 years. In Vallejo, he was part of a tight-knit family of “characters.”

Known for his heart of gold, Mike was a truly good friend and always first there to help when needed. Mike was a gifted musician, artisan woodworker, a voracious reader and lender of books, and an avid fisherman.

In addition to his many close friends in Vallejo, he leaves behind a treasured daughter Veronica, (his daughter Michelle predeceased him in 1984), brother John Franklin and sisters Cathy Closson and Betty Franklin. A celebration of his life will be held in Vallejo, as well as a family service in Carpinteria.

Walter Granville Johnson 9/27/1934–2/15/2019

Walter Granville Johnson, 84, of Carpinteria, passed away Friday, Feb. 15, 2019. He was born Sept. 27, 1934 in San Jose, California. He graduated from Live Oak High School in Morgan Hill, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and received his teaching credential from Cal Poly.

He met his wife Janet in the fourth grade and they were married in 1955.

They celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on Nov. 26, 2018 and lived in Carpinteria for 54 years. He loved his community and his church, and he was an avid train enthusiast.

Walter was an agriculture teacher at Carpinteria High School for 25 years. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1977 and he retired from teaching in 1989. Known to many as “Mr. J,” he had many “kids” who he remembered fondly.

He was a member of the California Ag Teachers Association and the California Retired Teachers Association, a Deacon at Carpinteria Community Church, and a Lions Club member and past president.

He was also a member of the South Coast Society of Model Engineers. He received the FFA Honorary American Farmer degree in 1987.

Walter was preceded in death by his daughter Marilyn Taylor and parents Walter F. Johnson and Meda Adams. He is survived by his wife Janet, daughter Kerri (David) Costa, son-in-law Michael Taylor, grandchildren John (Megan) and Benjamin (Robyn) Taylor, Melissa (Elliott Dozier) and Rachel Costa, great grandchildren Gavin, Samuel and Rockwell Taylor, brothers Raymond Johnson, William Adams and Wallace Adams as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at Carpinteria Community Church, 1111 Vallecito Road, Carpinteria. The end of third grade is a significant milestone in a student’s K–12 education, as the focus of the classroom shifts from “learning to read, to reading to learn,” and “research has shown that when students are not reading at grade level by the end of third grade they are four times more likely not to finish high school” (2018 “NCLS A Look at Third Grade Reading Retention Policies”). Parents can also help their students by establishing a daily routine of reading at least 30 minutes per night before bedtime.

Classroom and school libraries offer a wide variety of reading materials for student use. Every K–12 student should be checking out books of their choice on a weekly basis from their school libraries. Library and media technicians work closely with teachers and students to identify new and interesting books. At the elementary level, students are also encouraged to participate in Accelerated Reader and Battle of the Books programs that reinforce and celebrate student literacy. At the secondary levels, many school library events are offered to increase daily reading for pleasure.

At CUSD, we are committed to providing the opportunity for all students to become successful and passionate readers.

We encourage parents and community members to join us in fostering a culture of literacy for our students.

During the primary grades, mastering grade level reading skills is critical for school success. Results from CUSD’s California Healthy Kids Survey demonstrate the magnitude of bullying and mental health issues among Carpinteria middle and high school students.

Healthy Kids Survey reveals areas of concern

At the CUSD school board meeting Feb. 12 Superintendent Diana Rigby presented results from this year’s California Healthy Kids Survey, a document that gives an annual indication of students’ sense of well-being. Referencing the survey, the superintendent highlighted areas of concern, particularly for seventh graders, as 28 percent reported experiencing chronic sadness/hopelessness, 20 percent reported alcohol or drug use and 16 percent reported seriously considering suicide.

With 150 seventh graders attending Carpinteria Middle School, the specific numbers break down to 27 students with serious thoughts of suicide, 42 with chronic feelings of sadness/hopelessness and 30 kids, ages 12 to 13, having used drugs or alcohol. Presumably, some of the students surveyed have experienced all three of the most serious categories: serious thoughts of suicide, chronic feelings of sadness/hopelessness and drug or alcohol use. The numbers are similar for the previous two years, going back to 2016/17.

CUSD Director of Special Education Kirsten Escobedo noted that when students have significant social/emotional needs, those needs can impact their ability to successfully access the curriculum in school and develop healthy social relationships. In response to the results of the survey, the district has established a three-tiered system of mental health supports, including monthly meetings of CUSD psychologists, counselors and START (Support, Treatment, Advocacy, Referral Team) therapists.

The three-tiered system is meant to provide students with support beginning in elementary school. Tier-one support includes: Second Step (social-emotional) curriculum delivered by teachers; school-based counselors; school-wide assemblies/events designed to promote positive school culture and relationships with caring adults.

At Carpinteria Middle School, staff are training with AHA, a program that

equips teenagers and educators with social and emotional intelligence to dismantle apathy, prevent despair and interrupt hate-based behavior. AHA has also begun providing instruction to CMS students this semester. Tier-one support at Carpinteria High School includes a student wellness club, AHA weekly lessons, a Mental Health Matters curriculum for all ninth graders, and school-wide assemblies/events designed to promote positive school culture.

Tier-two support includes START therapists-CADA and FSA mental health therapists (one at each school site), referrals to Carpinteria Children’s Project’s Family Service Agency and weekly onsite mental health team meetings. Tier-three is specifically for students in special education with an Individualized Education Program. Escobedo added that the greatest need in the district is for a fulltime mental health therapist at each school site, starting with a fulltime mental health therapist at CMS, which comes at a cost of $76,000.

CUSD students and families in need are referred to FSA at the Carpinteria Children’s Project campus on 8th Street, who in turn provides referrals for services with various agencies for counselling. Maria Gonzales of FSA said, “We are hoping to get counselors/ therapists in Carpinteria because there is a need.” Additionally, Gonzales said, “the families we serve have a hard time travelling to Santa Barbara (the bus can take more than an hour each way), and one thing we are lacking is having bilingual therapists.”

The middle school has implemented 20-minute “Advisory Periods” four-daysa-week at the start of the school day, and CMS eighth-grade English teacher Mary Van Dyke said that she sees a change “from when students come in” to her Advisory Period, “and when they leave.”

Generally, all students “face similar struggles” around peer pressure Van Dyke said. “Peer pressure, pressure to fit in…” can have a positive side, Van Dyke pointed out, such as pressure to excel in sports or academics. But kids who might struggle in school will “find other ways

to fit in and that’s not always positive,” she explained. Through exercises like journaling, small-group and class discussions, Van Dyke and other Advisory Period instructors are teaching mindfulness techniques.

“We recognize some of our students are struggling with hopelessness/feelings of suicide,” CMS Principal Lisa O’Shea said. “That’s why we’re bringing in the clubs (AHA) to help support students in their area of need.”

The emergency repairs of an electrical conduit line on the beach close to the pier extended to Thursday. Permit conditions were imposed to minimize disturbances, including having consultants Padre and Associates watching to be sure the conditions were followed. Workers minimized noise, kept a low profile behind the cement bundle between the work and the seals, and did ancillary work away from the beach. Workers did an excellent job attempting to avoid bothering the seals. Only two minor disturbances caused by hammering noises were noted Monday through Wednesday during the several hours of low tide work.

Nevertheless, activities that may affect the harbor seal’s behavior should be avoided as no one can quantify the cumulative effects of disturbance. We know from 30 years of observations that repeated disturbances cause fewer and fewer to come ashore and that the length of time between returns increases. This is easily seen, for example, after June 1 when beach closure ends. On any given day, we do not know how many seals are more sensitive than others to activity onshore and stay in the water or go elsewhere. Below is information for Feb. 18––24.

Disturbances

Blowing balloons scared most into the ocean—this occurred just before beach work was to begin Monday. The electrical work on the beach caused two minor disturbances, beach walkers caused two, a helicopter one and a child held high on a parent’s shoulders at the overlook caused one.

Homeless protest for warming center to open

A little before 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, a group of homeless people gathered in front of the Carpinteria Veterans Memorial Center with a cardboard sign emblazoned with the handwritten statement, “Protest to activate Freedom Warming Center Carpinteria.”

While the gathering caught the attention of passersby throughout the community, it was relatively small, about a half dozen people, and quiet. The Sheriff’s Office did not respond to any calls, according to Kelly Hoover, public information officer for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office. Freedom Warming Center was open at the Veterans Hall the eve before on Friday, Feb. 22.

The Freedom Warming Center did not open in Carpinteria on Saturday night because the weather conditions did not meet the required threshold: 35 degrees or less or 50 percent or more chance of rain (as predicted at least 48 hours before any given date). These are standard triggers in the state of California, according to Kathleen Hayes, executive director of Freedom Warming Centers, a nonprofit organization, part of the Unitarian Society, that has been operating throughout Santa Barbara County in partnership with the county for the past 10 years. “We only activate when weather conditions could be life threatening,” said Hayes.

“Chariots of Fire” screening kicks off 100th Russell Cup festivities

In honor of the 100th Russell Cup Track and Field Meet, a special screening of the 1981 classic film “Chariots of Fire” will be held on Tuesday, March 5, at 7 p.m. at the Alcazar Theatre. The film, which won four Academy Awards including Best Picture, is inspirational in its moving portrayal of two young athletes competing for Olympic gold.

Memorabilia from past Russell Cup meets will be on display at the theater on the night of the show, and a slideshow full of historic moments and the meet’s most successful athletes will be screened prior to the film. The event, which costs $10 for adults and $5 for children, is a fundraiser for the Carpinteria High School Track & Field Team. Presale tickets will be available at Carpinteria High School, Laughing Buddha and Murphy’s Vinyl Shack.

Tickets will also be available at the box office the night of the show.

The movie marks the first of several events celebrating the 100th edition of Russell Cup, the state’s oldest high school track meet. A Junior Russell Cup will give local elementary and middle school students an opportunity to compete in track and field events on April 5, and the 100th Russell Cup will showcase the competition of over a thousand athletes from throughout the state on Saturday, April 13, at Carpinteria High School.

Organizers of the milestone meet are preparing for a very special event this year, including the return of historic competitions, a display of Russell Cup memorabilia, honoring athletes of years past and post-meet festivities.

“We are thrilled to celebrate 100 years of this well-loved competition,” said Van Latham, meet director. “Throughout the decades, Russell Cup has drawn tens of thousands of fine athletes from all over

While the dudes, dudettes and their parents didn’t technically “rock-around-the clock,” they packed in 24-hours-worth of fun on the dance floor and stage with DJs pumping out 1950s faves. New work by santa Barbara artist Lloyd Dallett will be on exhibit from March 5 through April 28 at porch, 3823 santa claus Lane. An opening reception with the artist will be held on saturday, March 9, from 3 to 5 p.m. to meet the Lloyd and enjoy refreshments.

Dallet studied art in Boston and New York and showed there for 14 years before returning to the West Coast in 2000. The current show reflects the artist’s interest in the ocean and its colors. “It’s hard to ignore the influence of the ocean landscape,” said Dallet. “My current work is a meditation on the horizon line and the coast. Winter skies fascinate me, and i have been trying to capture the subtle color variation of the horizon and sky. i love the way the ocean melts into the sky in winter.”

After a visit to Japan last spring, Dallet was inspired by the country’s use of rock and pebbles, “and how they dominate the landscape.” Dallet’s new work includes rocks and pebbles as contrasting elements, eliciting an interplay between the grey rocks and cool blue water of the coastal landscape.

Warriors prevail in season opener

Baseball season kicked off for the Carpinteria High School baseball team on Friday, Feb. 22, after games were postponed due to rain. The Warriors hosted Nordhoff in their season and Citrus Coast League opener at John Calderwood Field.

Carpinteria tallied a combined six runs in the second and third innings for a 6-5 win over the Rangers.

Senior Chase Mayer got the start for Carpinteria, and cruised through the top of the first inning, striking out one. In the second inning, the left-handed hurler got into a bit of trouble, as the Rangers loaded the bases with one out. However, a strikeout and a tapper to the catcher Diego Hernandez, who threw over to first baseman Jason Warren for the third out, kept the game scoreless.

The Warriors got on the board first in the bottom of the second as Hernandez led off with a single. Andy Johnson followed suit, and singled to right field with Hernandez going to third. Issac Castillo then flew out to shallow right field, and the next batter, freshman Luke Lounsbury, walked to load the bases. Mayer then doubled to right to drive home two runs, and fellow senior Noah Nuño then laced a double to drive home two more, giving the Warriors a 4-0 lead. “… we lean on Chase (Mayer) to start the game and set the tone, and then sure enough he gets to come up in a key situation and deliver a hit. And then Noah (Nuño) delivers a hit right afterwards,” said Carpinteria coach Pat Cooney of his two seniors. “They both played huge roles today.”

Following a shut-down third inning by Mayer, the home team once again made some noise in the bottom half. With one out, after three straight walks by Nordhoff starter Philip Heldwein, the Warriors took advantage of the sophomore’s wildness when Lounsbury dropped a single into right to make it 6-0. Emanuel Bautista replaced Heldwein after the big hit by Lounsbury and ended the inning by inducing a double play ball.

However, the Rangers got on the board in the fourth, slugging three singles, stealing a couple of bases and taking advantage of a wild pitch to score three runs to cut the lead in half at 6-3. Nordhoff then added two more runs in the fifth off a couple more hits and an error. But Mayer caught the potential tying run attempting to steal third to end the fifth inning.

Miles Souza came in to relieve Mayer in the sixth and seventh innings. Mayer struck out seven, walked one and allowed five runs during his five innings for the win. Souza was able to get out of trouble in the final two innings, getting Santiago Avalos to ground to second with two runners on to end the game. Souza struck out three on the day.

On offense, Mayer had two hits, and the Rangers’ Gilbert Patino accumulated four hits for the game. “The guys did really well, they knew it would be the first experience, so those early nerves and those things that we haven’t really worked on yet, so, it’s always tough … your first one,” explained Cooney of his team’s first game.

“They really stayed calm…,” he added.

Other than Mayer and Nuño, Vance Keiser is the only other senior on the squad. The Warriors continue league play when they travel to Santa Paula on Friday, March 1, for a 3 p.m. game.

Boys volleyball

February 21 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team hit the road for a Thursday evening match versus the Orcutt Academy Spartans, sweeping the north county squad, 3-0. Again, Miguel Enriquez was inserted at setter. “Miguel, Number-10 stayed composed and ended the night with 17 assists,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Outside hitter Liam Slade contributed six kills. “Middle blocker Luis Zamora was ready to defend his net and helped the Warriors with two blocks, seven kills,” explained Garcia. Middle Nathaniel Flores added two blocks and five kills. Outside hitter, freshman Diesel Slade had an eight-point serving run and ended the night with four kills.

February 25 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team was swept by Calabasas, three games to none. Outside hitter, Liam Slade ended the night with eight kills. Middle blocker, Number-six Luis Zamora added five kills and a block.

“Carpinteria kept trying to defend the net, however, the Coyotes’ offense was well equipped,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. The match scores were 25-10, 25-4 and 25-10. “The Warriors went down swinging in the third set,” explained Garcia whose team is overall 1-2 with Citrus Coast League play yet to start.

February 26 – The Carpinteria High School boys volleyball team played Orcutt, coming away with a 3-0 sweep. “Outside hitter, Number-nine Liam Slade was aggressive at the net, getting 12 kills,” said Warriors coach Dino Garcia. Middle blocker, Number-six Luis Zamora supplied seven kills. Match scores were: 25-20, 25-11 and 2522. Carpinteria’s overall record is 2-2, not beginning Citrus Coast League play as of yet.

Carpinteria will compete in their first tournament of the season, March 1 at Camarillo.

Boys tennis

February 21 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team absorbed a non-league loss to defending CIF Division Three champs Ventura, 11-7. Number-One Esteban Zapata paired with Ian McCurry and Sam Castillo to go 2-1, as did Solomon NahooikaikaAnderson/Kirby Zapata and Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson/Cameron Gralewski. February 23 – The Carpinteria High School track and field team won a series of events at Saturday’s Rincon Relays at Valley Memorial Stadium. The overall score for the boys team was 55, good for fifth overall while Orcutt Academy took first place. Meanwhile, the girls finished second with 80, behind first place Foothill Tech who scored 103. Victor Rinaldi captured the 600 meters with a time of 1:29.89, and his brother Vincent Rinaldi won the 100 meters with a personal best time of 11.61 seconds. Shaylah Alvarez won the long jump, leaping 14 feet, five and a half inches for her best mark of this year. Her twin sister Savannah Alvarez won the triple jump, traveling 31 feet, five and a half inches, a personal record. Isaac De Alba won the shot put with his best throw in ’19, tossing it 44 feet, two and a half inches. Alejandra Cardona won the girls 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.10.

February 26 – The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team defeated Villanova in a non-league match, 11-7. “In doubles, we had a great performance by Myles Morgan who went 2-0 with Sam Castillo, and 1-0 with Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson,” explained Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Ian McCurry/Kirby Zapata went 2-0, as did Esteban Zapata/Cameron Gralewski. In singles, Carlos Costilla went 1-2, while Number-one Corban Pampel went 1-1 on the day. “We did not have the best warmup prior to the match, and it seemed it carried over to the first

Boys Basketball

February 26 – The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team concluded their season as they fell in the first round of the CIF play in Perris to Orange Vista, 62-51.

The Warriors jumped out to a 17-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, but scored two points in the second quarter to trail 22-19 at the half. The Coyotes were able to get a little separation on Carpinteria in the third, as they took a 40-31 lead going into the final quarter. The two schools played a nearly even fourth quarter, but the Warriors were unable to catch Orange Vista. It was an historic season for the school on Foothill, as this Warrior boys basketball team advanced further into the CIF-SS playoffs than any other hoops team in the school’s history. It was also the first time that any boys basketball team had qualified for the State tournament. This was all done under the leadership of first year coach Corey Adam, and a determined squad that never gave up on the season even after starting 0-6.

February 21 – The Cate School baseball team hosted a Top-10 team in Division Six for the second time in as many days, falling once again to the de Toledo Jaguars, this time 6-5. Junior Dalton Phillips got the start for Cate and allowed four runs in four innings, along with four hits while striking out two batters. Sophomore Daniel Panadero in relief, threw the final three frames allowing two runs, three hits and two strikeouts. “William Deardorff made some great plays in centerfield for Cate,” said Rams assistant Dave Soto. As far as the Rams offense was concerned, Phillips had two hits and two RBI, while William Deardorff ended up with one single and one RBI. Senior Jack Deardorff connected on a double into left-center field for the team’s only extra-base hit. Panadero and sophomore Zach Hanson each had a single for the Rams.

February 21 – The Cate School boys volleyball team dropped their first league contest in four games against Laguna Blanca with scores of 16-25, 21-25, 25-19 and 1825. “Notable performances: Jackson Weinberger, in an emergency adjustment in match three, stepped off the bench into the libero role and made an impact by making several key passes …,” said Rams coach K.C. Collins of the junior whose serve gave her team the first lead of the night. “Alex Kim came in and served well and provided some key defense throughout the entire match,” explained Collins. Junior middle Ethan Ng had five blocks and five kills for the night. Senior Cullen Barber had 10 kills, eight digs and four blocks. Senior Jojo Broussard served up two aces, two kills, two blocks, and had a 2.0 passing ratio to go along with six digs. Senior Sebastian Richardson added a kill on a setter’s dump and had seven digs on defense. And, junior Theo Mack led with seven service aces, 17 kills and 10 digs.

Boys lacrosse

February 23 – The Cate School boys lacrosse team used a six-goal run that started with eight minutes to play in the third quarter to pull away from Grace Brethren for a 12-4 victory in Carpinteria on Saturday afternoon. With the game tied 3-3 in the third quarter, sophomore midfielder Dylan Vincent scored on a left-handed sweep to put the Rams ahead by one. Cate scored the next six goals, including four by freshman attackman Xander Murray. Murray and Vincent each finished with five goals and one assist on the day. Attackman Parker Bowlin chipped in two goals in the Rams victory over the Lancers. In goal, junior Peter Bulkley Armas made nine saves.

Boys tennis

February 23 – The Cate School boys tennis team beat rival Thacher in a non-league match, 10-8. Ethan Ha swept in Number-one singles play, losing just a pair of games.

In doubles, the Number-one Rams team of Brad Gordon and Parker May swept also, losing only one game. Cate will compete against another rival, as they go down the hill to play Carpinteria on Thursday, Feb. 28.

Boys volleyball

February 26 – The Cate School boys volleyball team swept Providence 25-13, 2517 and 25-23 at home Tuesday night. Junior Ethan Ng opened up with a kill to start the match and racked up five kills, hitting a .333 percentage overall, collecting two blocks, two aces and two digs. Junior Sean Busse executed four kills and a block. In the back row, libero sophomore Ryan Suh posted six digs, while junior Alex Kim had six digs of his own. Junior Theo Mack knocked down 10 kills, along with eight digs, three blocks and an ace. Senior Cullen Barber buried five kills and came up with four digs. “We took the opportunity during this match to explore some different scenarios, and giving players some experience on the court in various positions,” said Rams coach K.C. Collins.

Girls lacrosse

February 26 – The Cate School girls lacrosse team played their first game of the season at home against Westlake that resulted in a 16-9 loss. “Seniors Maddie Erikson, Daphne McKeefry and Andreah Graf ran the midfield, and were key to the composure on the field,” said Rams coach Renee Mack. Mia Foster, playing on defense and in the midfield, notched a goal. “Maya Fenelon also led by example on defense,” said Mack of Fenelon’s aggressive play inside the eight-meter line. Erickson tallied five goals, Imani Oseso had two goals and Lily Zanze registered one goal. Liza Borghesani made three saves.

Carpinteria High School boys basketball player Noah Nuño and UCSB woman’s basketball Danae Miller were presented with Athlete of the Week awards on Monday, Feb. 25, at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon. The two standouts had to wait a week because of the holiday last Monday. Nuño went on the road with the Warriors to help beat top-three-seed Vistamar by a score of 72-54 in the second round of the CIF-SS playoffs a couple of weeks ago, knocking down 28. Then, two days later in front of a packed Warriors Gym, he led his team to an emotional quarterfinal win over crosstown rival Cate by scoring 23 and converting on eight of 10 free throws in the final quarter to help seal a 51-46 victory. Carpinteria was eliminated in semifinal play by Oakwood, 63-32. However, the Warriors will play on as they were invited to compete in this week’s CIF State tournament.

Carpinteria High School girls water polo coach Sergio Castaneda was named the Citrus Coast League Coach of the Year. “Being named coach of the year of was exciting to hear and I owe it all to the incredible team that I had the honor of coaching,” said Castaneda. The first-year coach led his squad to a share of the league title with an 8-1 record, and the Warriors also advanced to the semifinals of CIF-SS Division Seven Tournament.

It’s the farthest any CHS water polo team has advanced in CIF. “Seeing some members of the team that I have coached since their middle school days in club Sergio Castaneda named water polo makes me proud, since I get to see how Coach of the Year. much they are developing,” explained Castaneda who also played water polo at the school. “I extend a special thank you to my former high school water polo coach Bryan Swarm, who didn’t give up on me and provided an incredible amount support and knowledge,” said Castaneda. Carpinteria who finished 12-7 overall has most of its team returning next year.

The project description is as follows: Remodeling of Classrooms in Buildings C & D including restrooms, HVAC work, electrical work, fire alarm, exterior paving, etc. The contractors’ license requirement is a B General Building Contractor. Per Public Contract Code Section 20103.8, the Carpinteria Unified School District will use Method (A) in determining the lowest responsible bid.

The District and/or its designee shall conform to the prevailing wage requirements pursuant to Labor Code, including but not limited to Sections 1771 et seq, 1774-1776, 1777.5, 1813 and 1815. The project is subject to compliance monitoring and enforcement by the Department of Industrial Relations. All contractors and subcontractors shall be registered and qualified to perform public work with the Division of Industrial Relations pursuant to Labor Code Section 1725.5 and adhere to the Disabled Veteran Business Enterprises (DVBE) participation goal per Education Code Section 17076.11 to be qualified to bid.

In accordance with Labor Code Section 1773 and 1773.2, the successful bidder and its subcontractors will be required to follow the nondiscrimination requirements set forth in the bidding documents and shall post prevailing wage rates at the location of the work. Requirements: The ideal candidate will have 4 years public works maintenance and supervisory experience; a results-oriented and hands-on supervisor who is knowledgeable of practices of street, and right of way; able to organize, implement and direct public works maintenance operations and activities; has knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices and management; computer literate (Microsoft Word and Excel) and Hazardous Waste Operation and emergency response certification or able to obtain the certification. In addition to being organized and resourceful, he/ she must have the skills to demonstrate tact and diplomacy when dealing with the public. Government experience and ability to speak Spanish are preferred.

Compensation & Benefits: The salary range is $60,639.16 - $83,380.59. Salary is supplemented by a generous benefits package.

Babies hold summit

The most recent fall and winter seasons produced a rather large crop of locally-sourced babies. Among the newborns was Easton, baby boy to Brianna and Andres Nuño. Brianna, a teacher’s aide at Canalino Elementary School and her friend Amber Burkey, another new mom, decided to start a Carp-centric baby group to connect with new and expecting moms around town. Through word of mouth and social media, the Fall/Winter 2018 Babies group has grown and now has 34 members (31 baby boys and three baby girls).

On Sunday, Feb. 24, the group held an all family get-together at Island Brewing Company. Over two dozen babies attended the meet and greet while their adult companions enjoyed a well-deserved beer.

Donnie Nair starts a new chapter

Local community activist, author and CVN advice columnist Donnie Nair was celebrated at a farewell party at the Woman’s Club on Sunday, Feb. 24. Nair will be moving to Paso Robles to live closer to her family. She will continue to write her column, “Life, Love and Manners,” for CVN.

Branching out on the Carrizo Plain cVn

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham Driving slowly along Soda Lake Road in the Carrizo Plain National Monument, I noticed a flash of a four-legged critter 50 yards away to the west. An endangered San Joaquin kit fox had just dived into its grassland den.

But its mate froze, choosing to lay flat, even its ears flattened out Yoda-like. I stopped my truck, gathered my camera and 300mm lens and proceeded to belly crawl 40 yards toward the motionless kit fox. The kit fox never wavered, almost appearing to nap as I approached on the wide-open Carrizo Plain—one of the last bastions for this high desert canid.

Kit foxes and other wildlife in the Carrizo Plain are getting an environmental boost thanks to the tireless efforts of the Carrizo Plain Conservancy (CPC). Since 2013, the Conservancy has focused on attaining additional lands surrounding the current National Monument by acquiring those properties to enhance the current state of flora and fauna in the southern San Joaquin Valley. The monument itself possesses more endangered species than anywhere else in California, such as California jewel flower, blunt-nosed leopard lizard, antelope ground squirrels, giant kangaroo rats and others.

The Carrizo Plain Conservancy (CPC) acquired a total of 8,000 acres in 2015 in and around the monument, the majority of lands coming from the 550-megawatt Topaz Solar Farm and the California Valley Solar Ranch. Both companies are within close proximity to one another and were required to set aside lands for conservation. Topaz Solar Farm was to conserve 5,400 acres, and California Valley Solar Ranch was to conserve 2,500 acres. Both solar plants failed to meet those requirements but after several lawsuits and settlements, the companies complied with their obligations. Subsequently, the 8,000 acres were turned over to the CPC. Other lands acquired were from private inholdings near the Carrizo Plain National Monument.

“We would like to see as many inholdings in the monument placed into public ownership as possible,” said Neil Havlik, president of the CPC. “There will be limits on what can be done in the California Valley and other private lands outside the monument due to mostly fiscal restraints.”

In the three years following those acquisitions, restoration efforts have moved forward. Surprisingly however, the additional lands north of Highway 58 were already in decent shape with regards to native flora. Sequoia Riverlands Trust, who has successfully restored lands in other regions of the San Joaquin Valley and the Western Sierra, has overseen many restoration projects.

“California Department of Fish and Wildlife feels that the lands north of the monument are already excellent habitat,” continued Havlik. “They see timed livestock grazing as the primary means of grassland management.”

Arguably the most threatened animal on the Carrizo Plain is North America’s fastest land mammal, the pronghorn

Over the years, many of its corridors were cut off due to barbed wire fencing, thus these grazers have had a tough go expanding their range across the monument. There are pronghorn herds on either side of Highway 58, and the goal is to open wildlife corridors and allow those herds to congregate.

Now with more land added on either side of Highway 58, improvements can be made to enhance pronghorn habitat and expansion. Where native flora needs to be added, this is especially important for fawns who need cover to hide from predators.

“Fencing on both sides of Highway 58 has been problematic for pronghorn, but the relatively low level of vehicle traffic there means the roadway itself has not been a major source of kill,” said Havlik.

“Much of the fencing along Highway 58 has been made more pronghorn friendly in recent years.”

Pronghorn don’t jump over fencing, instead opting to duck underneath it.

Barbed wire fencing has always been an issue for pronghorn, but as time has gone on, more barbed wire fencing has been removed or replaced with loose, straight wire, making it easy for pronghorn to slip underneath.

“We support continued removal and upgrading of fencing to make things

pronghorn friendly,” he said. “Also, shrub reestablishment will help improve success in fawn rearing.”

The Carrizo Plain Conservancy has also made a point of purchasing lands with high vegetation quality. In many cases the properties purchased don’t need anything other than fence removal.

“Removing fencing is the least expensive project to restore habitat,” said Steph Wald, board secretary for the CPC. “Water

features for wildlife requires more effort.

We want to develop wildlife corridors between Bittercreek National Wildlife Refuge through the California Valley.”
