Natural History Notes Harbor seals have been recorded diving in excess of 600 feet and staying underwater more than 30 minutes. Most foraging dives are just a few minutes. When diving, the seals’ heart rates can slow to only four- to six-beats per minute, and blood is diverted to the heart, lungs and brain. Seals exhale before diving, storing oxygen in blood and muscle rather than the lungs.
Disturbances The seals were frightened by a powered hang glider, a beach jogger and a nearby fishing boat.
Visitors Over 1,758 people enjoyed watching the seals, especially the new pups and moms. Represented places included Australia, Germany, Korea, Argentina, france, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden, Arizona, New Hampshire, pennsylvania, Washington, illinois, Ohio, New Jersey, New york, Montana, idaho, Minnesota, Nebraska, Maine, Texas, Kentucky, Missouri, Colorado, Oregon, Michigan, Arkansas, Utah, Massachusetts, indiana and Washington DC. Stephen Joyce and his wife Lynda recently went to Cuba, where they visited Havana, Vinales, Cienfuegos, Trinidad and the Bay of Pigs. Stephen took a moment with the Coastal View News in the shadow of one of the planes used in the Bay of Pigs battle—the disastrous CIA operation in April 1961, in which U.S.-trained Cuban exiles attempted to overthrow the Castro regime. The Joyces stayed with Cuban families in “Casa Particulares,” which is the only form of accommodation now open to U.S. passport holders. Boys tennis February 18 - The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team lost their fi rst match of the season to Division-Two Simi Valley, 17-1. “We have a lot of new faces this season from last season, but they did their best and gave all that they had,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. “We were led by our two captains and doubles tandem, Ian McCurry and Esteban Zapata, who went 1-2, but really played well in all three of their sets,” added Bryant. Carpinteria is now 0-1 overall. The Warriors face Santa Barbara on Thursday, Feb. 20.
Cate School
Girls soccer February 11 - The Cate School girls dropped a 2-1 decision to Malibu. The Rams goal came from Lilly Riehl in the 15th minute off an assist from Nemma Mugofwa on a corner kick. Malibu scored in the 50th and 72nd minutes for the win. Saves made by Taylor Kane numbered six for Cate. It was the fi rst Division-Six CIF game for the Rams who last year played in both a lower league and division. “Malibu wasn’t expecting us to be as good as we were and for the fi rst 50 minutes we looked like the better team, though the Sharks had three strong individual players who were plenty threatening” said Rams coach Taylor Wyatt. “The combined efforts of defenders: Tamsyn Taptich, Olivia Dorion, Lea De Vylder and Kim Rogers were able to hold them off.” Tali Nam, Jolea Moes, Mugofwa and Grace Blankenhorn pushed all the way forward in the second half. Kane, at goalkeeper, and Kim Rogers set the defense. The Rams fi nish with a record of 7-5-2.
