In recognition of March as Women’s History Month, the Alcazar Theatre will present six weeks of comprehensive and diverse programming celebrating the theme of “Women Making Change.” Feature performances include female musicians, artists, comedians and poets, as well as screenings of documentaries and films that amplify the accomplishments and legacies of women throughout history and the present. Indoor mask mandate ends for vaccinated residents Unvaccinated residents must still wear masks at indoor public spaces

The county’s indoor mask mandate ended Wednesday for vaccinated residents. The state’s own indoor mask mandate expired the day prior.

Masks are still required indoors for those who are unvaccinated, as well as people on public transit, in K-12 schools, childcare facilities, healthcare settings, correctional facilities, shelters and other care facilities.

“Our community has endured through 23 months of the Covid-19 pandemic and we have learned how best to protect ourselves,” County Public Health Director Van Do-Reynoso said in a press release.

“Vaccination, including receiving a boost-

er, and testing will continue to diminish the spread of this virus, especially as we continue to move past the surge caused by the Omicron variant.”

The mandate was lifted because the Omicron variant has shown shorter periods of illness, a lower death county and fewer hospitalizations for the fully vaccinated, per a county press release.

According to county data, unvaccinated people are 5.7 times more likely to get Covid-19, 3.4 times more likely to be hospitalized due to the virus, and 8.1 times more likely to die of Covid-19 than vaccinated residents.

“We are calling upon our community to act in the best interest of themselves and their neighbors,” said Dr. Henning Ansorg, County Health Officer.

“We are now on the downslope of the recent surge as evidenced by our lowering case rate and test positivity along with stable hospitalizations. We have considered how the dominant variant circulates and what effects it has, and have determined we are in a place to be able to lift the universal indoor masking requirement.”

Between Feb. 4 and Feb. 10, the county reported 2,418 new cases of Covid-19, for

2,281 active cases and 82,452 total cases.

There were 96 hospitalizations reported in the county, with 12 new deaths. There now have been a total of 631 deaths due to Covid-19 in the county.

The majority of cases seen last week fell in the 0-17 age group, with 732 cases, followed by 651 cases in the 30-49 age group.

Within the county, 67.1% of residents are fully vaccinated.

The county case rate fell to 58.38 per 100,000 residents on Feb. 7, with a test positivity rate of 16%.

Council concerned by bid projection $500k over budget

BY EVELYN SPENCE The city received only one bid for the Carpinteria Skate Park construction contract, city staff told the council on Monday.

The bid was $500,000 over the city and the Carpinteria Skate Foundation’s budget, according to Parks Director Matt Roberts. He asked that the council defer accepting the bid to allow city staff to explore its options.

“The public contract code gives us some options,” he said, explaining how the city could accept the bid as is, reject

the bid and readvertise the project or split parts of the skatepark for different construction contracts, among other similar options.

Peter Bonning, vice president of the Carpinteria Skate Foundation, urged the council not to let the singular bid defer the project.

“Traditional skate park builders are less likely to bid on the project,” he said, referencing the landscaping and other areas that need to be addressed on the property. “We have consistently met

fundraising goals over a decade as we watched the cost of this park double and triple.”

“It is imperative at this juncture for the city to step into high gear and deliver this park (quickly) … We cannot let another year, another summer, another generation of middle school students who do not have any option after school slip by without delivering this park to the community.”

He encouraged the council to look at alternate funding sources for the extra

$500k, beyond what is budgeted in the general plan and provided by the foundation’s fundraising. According to Roberts, $400k from the city’s general reserve is already programmed for the project.

“I think obviously this bid we got was really surprising to all of us,” Julia Meyer, marketing and community outreach director of the foundation, told the council.

The council voted to defer accepting the bid, asking that city staff provide a staff report at the next meeting on Feb. 28 with a list of options.

New library name: Carpinteria Community Library The official name of the new library is the Carpinteria Community Library, librarian Jody Thomas said on Monday.

The library does not yet have a logo.

The library has also received a MOU from Black-Gold, the cooperative that handles library items such as books and audiobooks. Thomas said the city is currently working with the county for a lease agreement for the veterans building.

Councilmember Carty requested the council tour the full memorial building to get a sense of what the future library might look like, or potentially hold one of the council meetings there.

Women-focused programming at the Alcazar

Beth Cox, speaking on behalf of Women Making Change, spoke about the upcoming Women’s History Month at the council meeting on Monday.

She plugged the Alcazar Theatre’s plan to introduce women-focused programming during March, “celebrating women in our own community and lives.”

Council discusses dune & shoreline management plan The city council did not accept the dune & shoreline management plan at its meeting Monday, against city staff recommendation, asking that city staff come back with a detailed report on the issue.

The council’s decision comes one week after the planning commission recommended against the plan, calling the plan a “really, horribly bad idea.”

The dune & shoreline management plan involves a living shoreline on Carpinteria’s beach, which includes a sand-retention structure known as a groin, beach nourishment with local plants, a six-foot-tall extended dune, sand fencing and other aspects to help protect the beach and local houses from sea level rise.

Chris Webb, dune designer & restoration ecologist, said the groin would help slow the transport of sand and to widen the beach.

“That’s the whole premise of this project, to protect the beach for the future (…)

and for the homes behind it,” he said.

It would likely take five to seven years to get the pilot program built on the beach, Environmental Program Manager Erin Maker told the council. If constructed in time, it would protect the area until 2050-2070. Funding, Maker said, would come from local, state and federal funds.

“The issues we are working out are very complicated,” Maker said. “We expect that all coastal communities are looking at these measures.”

But the council expressed concerns over the fluctuating cost of the maintenance and construction – between $9 million and $12 million – and how unforeseen storms might affect the project over the next few decades.

“Mother nature is a big part of this, you know. It’s a large amount of money to put into this, and Mother Nature could ruin it in one day or a week,” Councilmember Gregg Carty said.

Fire department responds to 11-car accident on Hwy 101

The Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Department responded to an accident involving 11 cars on Thursday morning, Feb. 10, on Highway 101, Fire Marshal Rob Rappaport confirmed.

The call came in at 10:50 a.m. for a multi-vehicle accident on Hwy 101, just north of Linden Avenue, Rappaport said. Three vehicles were stuck on the northbound side of the 101, while eight were hit on the southbound side. One of the vehicles on the northbound side was a truck carrying diesel fuel.

Rappaport confirmed at noon five people had minor injuries, and emergency responders were treating patients at the scene.

All lanes of the southbound 101 were closed temporarily, with emergency responders diverting traffic off the Linden Avenue off-ramp. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

TK, kindergarten Fall 2022 registration opens March 1

Fall 2022 registration for transitional kindergarten and kindergarten students at the Carpinteria Unified School District opens March 1.

The district will hold an informational meeting on March 3, between 6 p.m and 7 p.m., at Canalino School. Spanish translation will be available.

Transitional kindergarten is for children who will be 5 years old between Sept. 2 and June 30, 2023; kindergarten is for children who will be 5 years old on or before Sept. 1, 2022.

Parents or guardians must provide address verification, such as a rental agreement or property tax statement, and a recent utility bill. Students must also provide a date of birth verification and proof of immunizations. Students cannot start school without providing proof of immunizations. A copy of the student’s recent physical exam or an appointment date, done or scheduled for after March 1, is also required.

Lorenzo Martinez is truly an outstanding member of the Carpinteria community and one-of-a-kind. Some readers may wonder why Mr. Martinez is wearing a Marine Corps uniform in the feature on him receiving an honor from the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire District (CVN, Vol. 28, No. 21).

He did join the Navy, and became a hospital corpsman. He was then assigned to the Fleet Marine Force. The Marine Corps does not have a medical service like the army, and utilizes Navy medical personnel like physicians, dentists and hospital corpsman.

Honor surfing legends

Kudos to CVN columnist Christian Beamish for his write-up on the late, great Peter Cole. Peter was a legendary surfer and a pioneer of big wave surfing on the North Shore of Oahu.

Unfortunately, too many people that surf these days are clueless when it comes to knowing the history of modern surfing, and are clueless about guys like Peter.

Sure, they know the names and stats of the surfers on today’s pro tour, but will give you a blank stare when asked about guys like Phil Edwards, Butch Van Artsdalen, Miki Dora, David Nuuhiwa, etc.

It’s a shame that so many of today’s surfers don’t know, or don’t care, about the sport’s history. Hopefully, Christian will continue to write about the guys and gals that have paved the way, and those who we, as surfers, owe a debt of gratitude.

A new chapter of the pandemic for Carpinterians

I’m happy to report that we are about to enter a new chapter in the Covid-19 pandemic. The Santa Barbara County Health Officer has decided to lift the indoor mask requirement on Feb. 16, and at that point, fully vaccinated individuals may enter shops, restaurants and most other public spaces without a mask.

Some people have pointed out how surprised they are by this decision, which mirrors the state’s decision to lift its indoor mask mandate. And it’s true, the virus is still prevalent in Santa Barbara County. However, our health experts and policy makers have not come to this conclusion lightly. They have weighed scientific evidence and considered it from all angles.

The Omicron variant spiked quickly, but is now declining even quicker. For those who are vaccinated, Omicron’s symptoms are milder and the risk of hospitalization and death is much lower. For these reasons, I agree with the decision by the state and county to move away from masking, but feel people should decide to do what they feel is right for them. Many of our community members will continue to feel safer in masks, and in some situations, including in K-12 schools, masks will continue to be required. In these cases, it is always best to err on the side of caution.

Michael Gilligan 8/19/1937 – 2/04/2022

Michael James Gilligan passed away peacefully on Feb. 4 at home, surrounded by his family. Mike was born in Fort Dodge, Indiana, on Aug. 19, 1937, to James and Helen Gilligan. He was one of seven children.

He was a loving husband to his wife, Anne, of 63 years, and a devoted father to eight children: Celia, Mike, Susanne, Katrina, Karen, Pat, Deborah and Shaun.

He was a father-in-law to Eric, Kerry, Paul, Tom, Joe and Susie; and a grandfather to 18 grandkids: Joey, Chrissy (David) Amanda, Malory (Jordan), Diana ADVERTISING DISTRIBUTION SERVICES (Derrick), Katie, Alicia, Sarah (Mike), Jacob (Kelsey), Thomas, Shane, Derrick, Andrew (Emily), Jordyn, Garrett (Alina), Morgan, Trisha and Andrew. Mike spent his childhood on a family farm until he joined the Air Force in January of 1956. Mike served with honor

and dignity until January 1980, receiving military achievements and awards, including Master Crew Chief Award, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship, NCO Academy Graduate, Army Good Conduct Medal with two bronze service stars, Air Force Longevity Service Award with five oakleaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with four oakleaf clusters. Additionally, he wrote the training program for the B52 mechanics and maintenance. His service deployment included several locations in the United States as well as international deployments.

Mike was introduced to Anne by his best friend and future brother-in-law Bill Goodwin. Mike held many titles during his life including PTA president, seamstress, baker of delicious pies, high school band booster club (“You will Never Walk Alone”), carpenter, mechanic, Little League coach, master of standing on his head, fixer of all things, friend to all and the most important title of all, God-Fearing Family Man. In 1986, Mike and Anne settled in Carpinteria. Shortly after moving to Carpinteria, they became involved in St. Joseph Catholic Church and quickly fell in love with the community. Eventually, Anne volunteered Mike to run the annual festival creating lifelong friendships within the Carpinteria community.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, with burial to immediately follow at Carpinteria Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Parents, union raise concerns over Aliso/Summerland principal

Parents for Aliso and the district’s union raised deep concerns about the Aliso/Summerland principal at last Tuesday’s board meeting, alleging mask misuse, a lack of bilingual communication and a repeated dismissal of parent frustrations.

In the open public comment portion of the meeting, Parents for Aliso (PFA) Co-President Monica Solorzano said Principal Veronica Gallardo has shown a “lack of transparency (and) disregard for safety protocols.”

She read aloud a letter sent to the school board and Superintendent Diana Rigby on Jan. 24, which named parent concerns with Principal Gallardo.

The letter outlined several incidents, including when Gallardo allegedly: interacted with students indoors without wearing a mask, and told the children they didn’t need to wear masks; dismissed reports of an instructional aid “choking” a student in a fifth-grade classroom; failed to provide Spanish translations of her messages to parents; and did not attend PFA meetings to discuss parent problems.

Other school board action: Board approves $300k increase in architectural services, despite prior concerns

The board approved a $311,402 increase in architectural fees for the Aliso modernization project, an increase that shocked the board when it came on the agenda on the Jan. 25 meeting.

The original cost for architectural services was $419,650 in 2015, Assistant Superintendent Maureen Fitzgerald told the board. The board approved an addendum that changed the scope of the project in 2017, but did not change the initial pay agreement with the architect.

“The agreement probably shouldn’t have been amended or updated, especially in 2020, when we brought the final phases of Aliso (…) over what his contract was,” Fitzgerald told the board.

Per the contract, the architect Robert Robles was not paid until the project was complete, which Fitzgerald said was shocking.

Trustee Jaime Diamond called the increase frustrating but said she “in no way” meant to insult the architect himself over the issue. “(The surprise increase) shouldn’t have happened in the first place,” she said.

Asbestos found under tile in old Summerland School

The board approved a $42,461.47 change order for construction at the old Summerland school site, after “unforeseen asbestos” was found under a floor tile.

The amount also allows for waterproofing on the south wall of the classroom building, and new footing for the southwest corner of the building.

The alleged ”choking” incident occurred on Feb. 1, when an “instructional aid put his hands on a disruptive student,” according to the letter.

“While there is no question that the classroom had become chaotic, it is alarming to hear than an aide made physical contact with a student in a way that another student described as resembling ‘choking,’” the letter read.

Students reported the incident to their parents, and Gallardo sent out a notice that same day and held a Zoom meeting with parents on Feb. 2. According to minutes taken by the PFA during the meeting, Gallardo reportedly “dismissed the version of events that students told their parents.”

Solorzano told the board that the PFA

Public commenters last Tuesday presented a number of complaints to the school board about Aliso/Summerland Principal Veronica Gallardo.

“As you can imagine, it is difficult for parents to hear one thing from their children and another from their principal.”

believes Gallardo is “not responsive to parents concerns” and that there is not a “culture of transparency” at the school.

“As you can imagine, it is difficult for parents to hear one thing from their children and another from their principal…

We don’t feel it is productive to discredit or discount these concerns,” Solorzano said.

The PFA letter was signed by a number of parents, including Carpinteria City Councilmember Natalia Alarcon, Monica and Ruairi Solorzano-Bateson, Berlin and Peter Garcia, Regina Ruiz, Ashley Hernandez, Rebecca Luera, Julee Perea,

Dulce Benitez and Neosha Bartholic.

Ruiz, who spoke on Tuesday, said she has been on the PFA for eight years and has three children enrolled in the district.

She reiterated issues outlined in the letter and said “things are only getting worse.”

“We cannot sit back and ignore these alarming issues. Our principal should be first to follow mandatory mask mandates.

This sets a confusing and unsafe example for our children. Our Spanish-speaking families should not have gone more than six months without bilingual communication. This is absolutely unacceptable,” she said.

“There is not support, diversity, equity and inclusion. It’s a first in nearly a decade at Aliso that there was not bilingual communication.”

The district’s union president Jay Hotchner also spoke on the topic, referencing a recent survey done among union staff about district administrators and other management. He called the survey’s results on Gallardo “genuinely concerning.”

“The employee union simply does not believe we have a genuine audience with the superintendent,” he said.

Hotchner, who spoke on several items during Tuesday’s meeting, provided the school board with copies of the survey.

Gallardo told CVN that she is working with parents to address issues. Gallardo has served as principal of the Aliso and Summerland schools since summer 2021.

“It is important to me that parents’ concerns are satisfactorily resolved,” she told CVN. Board member Andy Sheaffer was absent during Tuesday’s meeting.

Third public hearing held on switch to by-trustee elections

The school board held its third public hearing on the switch to by-trustee elections. Daniel Phillips, from the National Demographics Corporation, presented the board with three maps: Plan 201, Plan 202 and Plan 203.

Each of the maps, drawn in their current forms, keep all of the board members’ current residences in separate districts – meaning if all five choose to run for re-election in the fall, they would not have to run against each other.

At prior meetings, board members had expressed interest in drawing the maps so they could potentially keep their seats in the November 2022 elections without having to run against each other.

Hotchner slammed the school board’s decision to prioritize their own seats in the districting process.

“The primary intent of the state (redistricting law) is to increase representation and diversity on K-12 public school district boards across the state, Carpinteria included,” he told the board.

Each of the three maps keep all of the board members’ current residences in separate districts.

Water District: Hoping for a March miracle

BY ROBERT MCDONALD, GENERAL MANAGER, CARPINTERIA VALLEY WATER DISTRICT We are over a month into 2022 and it sure is dry. In January, we had 0.02 inches of rain recorded in Carpinteria, and February is not looking much better.

We are halfway through February and hoping for some rain to help replenish local water supplies. Historically in Santa Barbara County, precipitation in January and February make up 43% of the rainfall all year. We started the winter with a hopeful set of storms in December.

The rainfall at Lake Cachuma was 8.22 inches in the month of December, which accounts for the majority of the 9.99 inches of rain the area has received since September of last year.

The storms in December were enough to turn the hillsides green but did very little for increasing storage at Lake Cachuma. However, we are now considerably behind in our seasonal rainfall. January and February are some of the most important months for statewide snow and precipitation and we have been greeted with blue skies and warm weather. We are hoping for a miracle in March to avoid falling deeper into our existing drought as December rain did little to change to critical water supply conditions.

Oftentimes, people use Lake Cachuma as a gauge to visualize how impactful storms are for local water supplies. Last November, the reservoir was at 48.4% capacity and decreased to 47.3% capacity ahead of December’s rainstorms.

In the month of December, Lake Cachuma received 1,333 acre-feet of water, but this only raised the reservoir back to 48.4% capacity. For the watershed to become saturated it takes a substantial amount of steady rainfall, especially after periods with little to no rain. We need consistent storms over time to saturate the region and allow the rain to become available as runoff to help fill the reservoir.

Slow, steady rain is also important for groundwater recharge. Although we

Managing our water supply portfolio is a balancing act during periods of drought and with unpredictable allocations from the State Water Project (SWP).

This recurring scenario has prompted the district to develop projects that will supplement our water supplies and help monitor existing supplies.

As of this writing, 65% of California is still in a severe drought according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. Initially, water suppliers were told to expect 0% of their allocation from the SWP. Fortunately, due to the rain and snow the Sierras received earlier this winter, the state revised the allocations to 15% for the SWP. Our strategy to develop a locally controlled, droughtproof water supply for our agency to be resilient during statewide droughts will pay off during these unpredictable water supply situations.

water supply sources, we are asking our customers to make conservation a way of life and use our water wisely. CVWD declared a State II Drought in October of 2021 and asked for a 20% reduction in water use from our customers, and we are currently not approaching these goals.

Consider these types of tax-smart contributions This year’s tax-filing deadline of April 18 is not that far off, but you still have time to make some moves that could favorably affect your tax returns.

So, you may want to consider making some taxsmart contributions.

You have until the April 18 filing deadline to contribute to an IRA, or to open one for the 2021 tax year. When you invest in a traditional IRA, your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis and your contributions may be tax deductible, depending on your income level. And as a result of recent legislation, you can now fund a traditional IRA past age 70½, as long as you have earned income.

If you invest in a Roth IRA, your contributions aren’t tax deductible, but your earnings can grow tax free if you don’t take withdrawals until you’re at least 59½ and you’ve had your account for five years. For the 2021 tax year, you can put up to $6,000 in an IRA, or $7,000 if you’re 50 or older. (If you’re a high earner, the amount you can contribute to a Roth IRA may be reduced or eliminated, while contributions to a traditional IRA may not be tax deductible.)

If you were to contribute to a health savings account (HSA) last year, you can also contribute to that for the 2021 tax year, up to the April 18 deadline. An HSA has triple tax advantages: Your contributions are made with pre-tax dollars, so they can reduce your taxable income for the year; your earnings grow tax-free; and your withdrawals are tax-free, provided the money is used for qualified medical expenses. Currently, there are many grants available at the federal and state level for water supply projects to help assist with the final design and implementation of CAPP. We are competing with many other water supply and infrastructure projects, but we are hopeful that we will receive some funding to assist with the final design of the project within the next two years. The district is also currently in the permitting process for new monitoring wells at El Carro Park, which will allow us to examine groundwater quality and water storage over time in the central portion of the CGB. We hope to have the project completed this calendar year.

Supes move forward to remove cannabis processing from acreage cap

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors approved 4-1, with Supervisor Joan Hartmann dissenting, the readings of new amendments to Chapter 50 of the county code, which deals with the licensing of cannabis operations.

The proposed changes include removing cannabis processing activities from the cannabis acreage cap, setting a sunset deadline for legal-nonconforming operations, and allowing businesses transferring ownership to keep their place on the cannabis acreage cap eligibility list.

Currently, there are three acres in the inland unincorporated area used for processing, and six in the Carpinteria Agricultural Overlay area, according to Brittany Heaton, the county’s principal cannabis analyst.

Heaton told the supervisors on Monday that a survey of the area’s operators had been done to figure out why there were few processing facilities in the area.

“We got a really good response from the operators, and overwhelmingly what we heard was that the acreage cap constraints led to the exclusion of the processing activities, because processing activities must be done indoors,” Heaton said.

Supervisor Hartmann spoke against allowing just-processing facilities and removing processing activities from the acreage cap, noting issues with odor.

The new amendments also state that all legal-nonconforming operations in the unincorporated inland area of the county that do not have their business licenses must obtain their full business licenses by Oct. 31, 2022, or shut down. This affects 15 businesses that control 222 acres in the inland unincorporated area.

Legal-nonconforming operations are operations that were cultivating medical cannabis prior to January 2016, according to Heaton.

The sunset deadline does not apply to the Carpinteria Agricultural Overlay, because the acreage limit in that area has not yet been reached.

“We anticipate that limit to be reached by the end of this fiscal year,” Heaton told the supervisors on Monday.

The other proposed change to Ch. 50 involves businesses than are transferring more than 20% of their ownership.

Previously, businesses who transferred ownership lost their spot in the cannabis acreage cap line; with the amendment, the business can maintain that spot in line.

A hearing on the proposed changes will be held on March 1.

Arts Center to host upcoming global art project

The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center will host a global art project in March, as part of the 2022 International Art Exchange for Peace.

The center will offer a free community workshop on March 6, between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., led by local Brecia Kralovic-Logan. Attendees will create art focused on the Carpinteria community, drawing inspiration from the colors of the beach to dye silk fabric strips and paint peaceful messages. Each of the strips will then be woven together by Kralovic-Logan to create a large banner that will be displayed at the center.

“The public is invited for a fun afternoon of creativity and camaraderie,” Joyce Donaldson, outreach director for the arts center, said.

Santa Barbara local Claudia Hoag McGarry will showcase new artworks beginning Sunday at Zookers Restaurant.

McGarry, a retired Santa Barbara City College teacher, started painting during lockdown in March 2020, and since then, has painted over 550 pieces throughout quarantine.

McGarry’s work will be on view through May at Zookers, located at 5404 Carpinteria Ave.

Maritime Museum presents “The Ships That Built the West”

On Thursday, March 17, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum will host “The Ships That Built the West,” a presentation offering a glimpse into the lumber trade between 1880 and 1945.

Olaf Engvig, the presenter, wrote a book on the Scandinavian Navy ships, which explores how captains and other sailors transported items to the West Coast. He is a former sea captain, and has a graduate degree in maritime history from the University of Ohio.

“With the Great Depression of 1929, a contracting economy, and growing road and rail transportation systems, the lumber schooner fleet gradually disappeared.

Long fascinated by these ships and writing about their importance, Olaf Engvig was determined to save and restore the derelict Vaerdalen, now the last existing lumber schooner in the world. His book and his presentation delve into the stories of these ships, their crews, and Engvig’s own struggle to restore the lumber schooner Vaerdalen,” the museum stated in a press release.

The presentation is free and will be held between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Participants must register in advance at atsbmm.org/santa-barbara-event.

Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara opened a new group exhibition this month, “This Basic Asymmetry,” an exhibition that explores self-perceptions. Museum entry is free.

Contemporary art museum opens new show

A new show at the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara (MCSAB) features different artists engaging the theme of self-understanding.

The exhibition, “This Basic Asymmetry,” features artists Patricia Ayres, Simone Forti, Miguel Angel Payano Jr., Paul Mpagi Sepuya and Gabriela Ruiz. “’This Basic Asymmetry’ presents the work of five artists whose practices make available their personal processes of introspection, creating a space for the viewer to reflect on their own relationship to their bodies and how that informs one’s perception of others,” Alexandra Terry, MCASB’s chief curator, said.

The exhibition will be on view until Sunday, April 17. MCASB is located at 653 Paseo Nuevo in Santa Barbara.

Glasshouse Farms now has roughly 500 employees across its two cannabis farms in Carpinteria, a cultivation site in Camarillo and four dispensaries. At the company’s Padaro Lane farm last week, dozens of the facility’s 100 employees were hard at work growing, cloning, trimming and caring for pot. Among the employees who spoke to CVN, working at Glasshouse Farms was a positive experience with a pathway to promotion and incentives in place to boost job retention.

Many at the Padaro farm started as entry-level employees and rose the ranks to leadership positions after working at Glasshouse for several years. Tiffany Garcia De Alba, who is now head grower at the Padaro and Casitas Pass farms, said she began as a greenhouse associate almost three years ago and was promoted a few times before becoming head grower.

“I started in trimming, and then I had the opportunity to work in the greenhouse, and then I became a team leader and then a supervisor, and then I moved to the office as the manager of labor,” Marquez said, adding: “My history here is growing a lot.”

Graham Farrar, CEO and president of Glasshouse Farms, confirmed that fulltime employment, professional development, promoting from within and employee incentives are part of the company’s plan. Farrar’s vision for the salient work culture at his farms is a team or a “farmily,” as he called it.

For Garcia De Alba, working at Glasshouse has been a means to grow professionally; and as a female grower in a male-dominated industry, she doesn’t take the opportunity for granted.

“We have a great culture and we’re like-minded,” Garcia De Alba said. “We strive for quality not just quantity, and we’re passionate … and I think it’s badass being a female grower. I’ve met quite a few others, but it’s random and rare.”

Across the Carpinteria Valley, agriculture is the top employment sector with 1,656 employees, according to the city’s 2021 Economic Profile. Cannabis farming is by far the top crop in employment with over 1,200 jobs at CARP Growers member farms alone.

I think in legal circles it is called indecent exposure, and sex crimes carry consequences. Reporting the deviant to the online app and the police could prevent future incidents of indecent exposure. Dear Tapped Out and Tipsy, Tipping is confusing and Covid-19 has made it more so. However, here’s the general rule: if you can’t afford to leave a tip, you can’t afford to eat out, and this is still true.

According to the Wall Street Journal, tipping on takeout is an aspect of the pandemic’s new normal and a minimum of 10% of the bill is the guideline. This takes into consideration workers’ reduced hours. I suggest applying this guideline to the more self-serve style of eatery, too, with an emphasis on minimum.

Yes, I do remember when 15% was standard for a restaurant meal. Nowadays, 20% is standard. What to do when you have lousy service? Talk to the manager. Not tipping does not solve the problem. It only shows that you are unkind and stingy.

Sealwatchers hear several misconceptions; here are a few:

Harbor seals migrate away at the end of pupping season.

False. They are here 365 days of the year, 24 hours a day and seven days a week if not disturbed. The beach closure ordinance is intended just to add additional protection to pups.

They’re all females.

False. Males and females are both on the beach, although there is an interesting phenomenon with a greater proportion of females on the east side of the beach, dubbed “the nursery.”

Pups crying on the beach and going to other moms to nurse are abandoned.

False. Moms need to forage and may leave for hours.

Photographer captures seal pup on day of birth

Amateur photographer Bill Fuller of San Clemente was camping with his brother and grandson at Carpinteria State Park last week when he visited the Harbor Seal Rookery on Wednesday, Feb. 9, just shortly after a seal pup had been born. Fuller spoke with Sealwatch volunteers and learned that the mom and pup were sleeping just below the bluff on the beach.

“There were also a lot of pelicans down there,” Fuller said. “The woman that was volunteering told me that pelicans are attracted by the afterbirth.”

Fuller decided to go back to his campsite for his macro lens and then return to the seal sanctuary just before sunset to photograph the seals and birds.

Motel staff reported a man was out of control, screaming and bothering guests.

He refused to leave after he was advised by deputies. He suddenly came out of his room and was taken into custody. His two dogs were taken by animal control.

A subject left his mother’s vehicle unlocked with the keys in the center console, and it was stolen overnight.

A stolen vehicle was located, unoccupied, at the above-mentioned location.

The vehicle was removed from the stolen vehicle system and was released to the victim’s family member, per the victim’s request.

An unknown suspect smashed the passenger side window of the victim’s vehicle and stole items from inside.

0649 hrs / Incident / Carpinteria Avenue

A reporting party called for assistance for his friend, who was experiencing an overdose after a night of partying at a hotel. Upon the deputy’s arrival, the reporting party claimed his friend was only drunk, but he appeared under the influence of hallucinogens. The man was transported to the hospital.

1104 hrs / Hit and Run / Carpinteria Avenue

An unknown suspect was involved in a hit-and-run collision with the victim’s parked vehicle sometime overnight.

1118 hrs / Felony Domestic Violence / 5900 block Hickory Street

The victim reported a litany of crimes, including federal domestic violence, committed against her by the suspect.

A majority of the crime took place in Ventura County. The suspect was arrested for felony domestic violence violations that occurred in Santa Barbara County, and the rest of the offenses were forwarded to Ventura County. An emergency protection order was granted.

1514 hrs / Deadly Weapon / 1400 block Sterling Avenue

Several reporting parties reported a juvenile male with a firearm in the area.

While responding, additional reporting parties pointed out the suspect’s direction of travel. A 14-year-old male was located who matched the suspect description. Witnesses came to the scene for an infield identification and determined the juvenile was not the suspect. The juvenile was released and the incident was documented. An actual suspect and firearm was not discovered.

1700 hrs / Domestic Violence / 5700 block Carpinteria Avenue

Deputies investigated a domestic report of a man physically abusing his girlfriend.

2042 hrs / Narcotics Violations / S. Hwy 101 and Bates Road

A traffic enforcement stop was conducted on a vehicle for an inoperative rear license plate light. During the investigation, the driver was found in

believed to have been used in an assault violation, and other items of evidence. An emergency protection order was granted and served, and the man was booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail.

0244 hrs / Narcotics / 1100 block Casitas Pass Road

A traffic enforcement stop was conducted on a vehicle with expired registration plates. During the investigation, the driver stated he did not have a valid license. While speaking to the man, a folded $1 bill was observed near the center console. When asked, the man admitted the folded bill contained methamphetamine. He was cited and released.

A bike stop was conducted on a subject for not displaying lighting equipment on the front of their bike. The subject was on probation and a search of his person and backpack were conducted. During the search, two Xanax bars were located in a small jewelry box. The subject was cited and released.

A traffic collision was documented.

0907 hrs / Potential Burglary / Paquita Drive

Initially reported as a burglary in progress, the information came thirdhand with no way to contact the reporting party. A broken door was found, and K91 responded to clear the house.

Nothing appeared stolen. The owners were contacted, and live out of the area, but responded to secure the residences.

The owner advised that drawers were opened, but they were unsure if anything was stolen.

1040 hrs / Possession / 4800 block Carpinteria Avenue

High school staff caught several students in possession of marijuana on campus.

1239 hrs / Scam / 1200 block Franciscan Court

The victim was scammed of $2,200 and a pair of boots through a Facebook marketplace scam associated with a series of scam Venmo emails.

2059 hrs / Citizen Arrest / Eleanor Drive

A man went to his grandmother’s house. He was not welcomed at the residence, and was told to leave. He instead went into the backyard. He was contacted trying to hide in the neighbor’s front yard and detained. The grandmother signed a citizen’s arrest form for prowling and the man was transported to the Santa Barbara County Jail.

School staff requested documentation of a verbal argument with a student’s mother. No crime or notable circumstances were evident.

1435 hrs / Warrant / 5900 block Hickory Street

A man was contacted at his home and arrested on a $1,000,000 Ramey warrant. A search warrant was executed at the residence, recovering the knife

Deputies were dispatched to a report of a theft. Deputies arrived and contacted juveniles in a vehicle. The stolen item was returned to the store, but during the contact deputies discovered open containers and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle. The juveniles were released with citations and to family members.

1648 hrs / Stolen Bike / 1000 block Casitas Pass Road

The reporting party used her son’s electric bike to go to the grocery store.

When she exited the store, the bike was no longer there. The grocery store employees reviewed surveillance and observed a subject get on the bike and ride away with it. The bike is a red “Super73” electric bike, valued at about $3,700.

2245 hrs / Public Intoxication / 4200 block Via Real

A woman was causing a disturbance and found to be intoxicated, to the point where she could not care for her own safety or that or others. She was booked.

0207 hrs / Warrant / Upper Thunder Bowl

Deputies approached a vehicle parked near the former Thunder Bowl.

A man was asleep in the vehicle. A records check revealed the man had a warrant for his arrest for vandalism. A search of his vehicle resulted in locating an empty Sky Vodka bottle and another vodka bottle with a quarter left of vodka inside. The man was booked at the Santa Barbara County Jail.

A reporting party reported that a male standing and saving a parking stall pushed his open driver side door, slamming the reporting party’s fingers in the door. The other male said that the driver of the vehicle opened the vehicle door attempting to push him away from the parking stall he was attempting to save and hit him hard with the door. An offense report will be sent to the district attorney’s office for review.

A man was walking on a public sidewalk with an open container. He was cited and released.

Car • PET • teria A Puppy with a Big Heart (Literally) Lily seeks her fur-ever home

At just one-year-old, Lily is as playful and energetic as any puppy. But unlike most dogs her age, Lily has a medical condition that requires a very special adopter. Lily is a one-year-old female Whippet mix with an enlarged heart.

Thanks to Santa Barbara Humane’s donor-supported TLC fund, veterinary staff consulted with a cardiologist and learned that she will need medication for the rest of her life and a cautious eye from a family who understands her medical condition.

Naomi Ramirez, a Shelter Supervisor at Santa Barbara Humane’s Santa Maria campus, took Lily in as a foster while awaiting the recommendations from the cardiologist.

“Lily is a very sweet girl,” Ramirez said. “She’s a total lapdog who loves to give kisses and seems to love everyone she meets, including other dogs.”

Lily was previously in a home that gave her the chance to bond with kids of all ages, where she lived with kids ages 2, 5, 7 and 9. She was also housebroken in her previous home and enjoyed sleeping on her dog bed at night. At just 22 pounds, this little girl still enjoys the beach, small hikes and is ready to share her love with a new forever family.

For interested adopters, Santa Barbara Humane’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Katie Marrie, emphasizes that Lily will need an extra special adopter who can provide the love and additional medical care that Lily requires.

Dr. Marrie said, “Lily does have a significant heart condition and requires her to be on three medications for the rest of her life and to see a cardiologist annually.

We want adopters to understand the commitment required when adopting a dog like Lily. But we also want them to know how wonderful and sweet Lily is.”

CLUB SCENE Haas Automation vice president visits Rotary Noon

Haas Automation Vice President Ian Cluderay visited the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Noon recently, for one of the club’s first indoor meetings since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

Cluderay discussed his team’s handling of supplies, and how parts are used to assemble machine tools. He said Haas Automation has faced challenges due to Covid-19, including shipping delays and supply availability. He leads the Supply Chain Management Team, according to club member Cheryl Wright.

Carpinteria Toastmasters Club hits 200th meeting

After nine years, the Carpinteria Toastmasters Club recently hit its 200th meeting, member Grace Rachow said.

The club helps build self-confidence, and the majority of its members hail from Carpinteria and Summerland. According to Rachow, meeting roles are switched each time to ensure everyone has a change to improve their public speaking skills.

“Carpinteria Toastmasters met for the first time on March 13, 2013, in the back room of the Curious Cup Bookstore on Carpinteria Avenue. The small space held 20 people curious about what Toastmasters is all about. The room was painted chartreuse, but the color did not deter anyone,” Rachow said.

Carpinteria Toastmasters Club President Suzanne Savoy said she is proud of what the club has become.

“It has been a joy meeting our delightful members. It is an excellent outlet for folks who enjoy lively, brief speeches,” she said in an email.

Members regularly meet on the first and third Wednesday of every month, between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. It currently meets over Zoom due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Locals launch “all Pro Dad” chapter

Locals George Bradshaw and Ryan Warner have founded an “All Pro Dad” chapter for the Carpinteria area.

The group, according to Bradshaw’s wife, Carrie, focuses on strengthening the relationship between dads and their kids. During the meetings, the pair plan to share snacks, watch videos and chat with other dads.

“It will be a great opportunity to invest in your relationship with your kids (...and give mom a quiet morning),” the Bradshaws said.

The first meeting is on Feb. 24, between 7:10 a.m. and 7:40 a.m. Attendees should bring a chair and some coffee.

Students receive check for volunteering at Rotary breakfast

High school Rotarians accepted a check for $500 from the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning recently, for their help with the club’s pancake breakfast fundraiser in December.

Carpinteria High School Principal Gerado Cornejo attended to congratulate the students on their work.

The club also welcomed Dr. Dennis Trigueros, chief of staff at the San Antonio Regional Hospital in Upland, California, to talk about Covid-19.

He expanded on how home testing works, how Covid-19 variants spread, and addressed vaccine myths, according to club member Shelby Donald. He told the group that Omicron has become a highly infectious disease, and that a person carrying Covid-19 could potentially affect 10 to 12 people.

“The Covid-19 virus vaccine is a way to slow progression, decrease the spreadable rate and keep the public out of the ICU. And it is likely we will need boosters until heard immunity has been reached. The vaccine is not a cure for Covid-19,” he told the club. “New rapid tests are being developed to help improve the accuracy with the Omicron variants.”

At its Feb. 9 meeting, the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Morning went over its recent projects, including the creation of a new plant markers at the Tomol Park on Linden Avenue. Member Art Fisher also spoke about the club’s partnerships with the Foodbank of Santa Barbara and the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club, to help with food insecurity during Covid-19.

“Rotary would like to thank the great partnerships of State Parks, Santa Barbara Botanical Garden and the city of Carpinteria that helped make this (plant marker) park happen,” member Shelby Donald said.

The club’s next speaker will be Holly Lohuis, a Carpinterian who has worked on Jean-Michel Cousteau’s documentaries The Rotary Club of Carpinteria and is a regular participation in the area’s Morning has new plant markers at ocean-focused groups. She will discuss the Tomol Park.

Santa Barbara Channel’s whales, and how it connects to the climate.

“By increasing public awareness of the pressing challenges facing the health of whale populations, Holly hopes to help enhance our connection to and relationship with these captivating animals and their ocean home,” Donald said.

The Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset now meets at Girls Inc. of Carpinteria on the second and fourth Tuesday of every month.

Warriors water polo season ends in second round of CIF playoffs

Carpinteria High School’s girls water polo squad had a magical run in the 2021-2022 season. They cinched the Citrus Coast League Championship with a perfect 8-0 league record – finally getting a win over Santa Ynez when it mattered most in the first round of the Division 4 CIF Playoffs, before falling in the second round to El Segundo.

Santa Ynez defeated Carpinteria in both of their regular season matchups, each by one point, and their third showdown ended with the same margin, this time with the Warriors on top 8-7.

Natalia Perez jumped out of the gate with three goals in the first quarter, and Carpinteria headed into halftime up 4-1.

Senior Piper Clayton also scored twice, including an impressive eight-meter shot that skipped across the water before flying right over the Santa Ynez goalie’s head.

Briana Rodriguez, Jocelyn Peña and Ainslee Alexander each pitched in a goal in the first-round playoff victory.

Carpinteria drew a tough match in a stacked Division 4 bracket, finding themselves headed to face the top-seeded powerhouse El Segundo Eagles in round two.

El Segundo defeated Royal 16-3 in the first round, and was on a five game win streak when they hosted Carpinteria. The game started out going the Eagles’ way, with El Segundo grabbing the initial sprint and scoring an uncontested shot in the opening seconds.

“The Eagles lived up to their seeded position as they exhibited speed, skill

and tenacity,” said Carpinteria coach Jon Otsuki. The Warriors struggled to contain El Segundo, and by the end of the first quarter Carpinteria trailed 0-5.

El Segudo continued to overwhelm the Warriors, forcing turnovers and fast break opportunities.

Carpinteria fell behind 0-8 before Briana Rodriguez broke through and scored the team’s first goal of the day.

Rodriguez would eventually finish with three goals, while Peña and Alexander each scored one in the 5-17 loss. Goalie Erin Otsuki blocked 12 shots in the game.

“Despite the loss, (they) were proud of their season, winning the first round contest and being the only winter sport to make the playoffs,” Coach Otsuki said.

He added that this group embodied the ideals of great sportsmanship throughout the year, playing “with pride no matter the circumstances,” and never giving up.

The Warriors won the bulk of their games with an onslaught of offense and lockdown defense, with a deep roster of talent leading the way. Rodriguez, Clayton, Peña, Perez, Alexander and Otsuki were standouts all year long in the pool, and the Warriors are looking towards the future with some of the younger players getting some quality playing time this season. Carpinteria finished the year with an overall record of 17-6, and a Citrus Coast League record of 8-0.

Warriors spring sports ready to play

As the books close on the winter sports seasons – basketball, soccer and water polo – Carpinteria’s spring sports teams are gearing up for their 2022 campaigns.

The coaches of the Citrus Coast League met Monday to select All League teams for the 2021-2022 winter seasons, which will be released when all Citrus Coast teams have been eliminated from the CIF playoffs.

Warriors parents and coaches met regarding spring athletics, to set specific goals and expectations for education-based athletics at Carpinteria.

The CHS Boosters will also be hosting the second-ever mattress fundraiser sale scheduled for March 5, 2022 at Carpinteria High School.

Cate basketball breezes through first round of CIF

Cate boys basketball continues to dominate, extending their win streak to 14 in a row after beating Beacon Hill 60-12 in the first round of the CIF Division 4A playoffs.

Big man Babacar Pouye, coach Andy Gil and the rest of the Rams’ hoops squad have not lost since starting their season 0-3, and clinched the Frontier League championship last week with a perfect 7-0 league record. They are now 14-3 overall.

In the first round victory, Cate jumped out to a 15-0 lead by the end of the first quarter, which by halftime was a score of 34-5. The Rams held Beacon Hill to one point in the third quarter, while they scored 17 to head into the fourth up 51-6.

Cate moves on to the second round to face Western in Anaheim, who defeated Chadwick 56-47 in the first round.

Cate soccer wins league, advances to CIF round two

After winning the Tri-Valley League Championship last week, the Cate boys soccer team hosted Maranatha for a first round CIF Division 6 playoff game.

Cate took a 1-0 lead off a rebound shot from Samuel Anum in the 31st minute.

Maranatha tied the game with a goal in the 55th minute, and the game remained tied until Cate senior Kobby Nimako – playing for the first time after missing the entire season due to an injury – made a pass to striker Peter Wood for the game-winning goal.

Cate faces Coachella Valley in the second round. Coachella Valley defeated Woodcrest Christian 5-1 in their first-round win.
