Car burns on Hwy 101

Early Monday morning, a vehicle caught fire on the Southbound Highway 101 between the Evans Road and Padaro Lane exits. At 7:03 a.m. firefighters from Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District arrived at the scene where the vehicle, a Volkswagon Jetta, was found on the right shoulder of the freeway engulfed in flames.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and cleaned up debris.

Chamber appoints new board members

The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce has announced four recently appointed board members. New board members are Michael Baker, CEO of United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County; Sara Dearman, public affairs representative of Chevron West Coast Decommissioning Program; Julie Spear, business solutions team lead for Ultimate Staffing; and Joey Zumaya, public sector manager at LinkedIn. The Chamber’s current leadership team is “a passionate group of 16 volunteer board of directors,� said Joyce Donaldson, Chamber president who oversees the organization and services for its 300 members.

Montecito Fire launches new wildfire map

The Montecito Fire Department is launching an interactive Story Map to highlight the Department’s Wildland Fire Prevention Program. Story Maps combine text, images, multimedia and interactive maps to create an engaging online experience.

The new Story Map provides a unique opportunity to present the importance of the Montecito Fire Department’s numerous wildfire mitigation projects, and highlight the programs that strengthen our community’s resilience and its resistance to wildfire.

Santa Barbara ChannelKeeper turns 20

Santa Barbara Channelkeeper—the nonprofit organization working to protect water resources in and along the Santa Barbara Channel through science-based advocacy, education, field work and enforcement—celebrates 20 years since its founding.

Channelkeeper has compelled numerous polluters to clean up their acts, effected countless policy changes to better protect our waterways, engaged 4,500 volunteers in its programs, and educated tens of thousands of students and adults about water pollution and solutions in classrooms, in the field, and through a variety of creative media and public outreach campaigns.

Channelkeeper will officially celebrate 20 years of environmental protection at its 20th Annual Blue Water Ball, a fundraising gala and silent auction on March 14 at Deckers Brands’ Headquarters in Goleta. The Blue Water Ball is Channelkeeper’s most important event of the year. This year, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. will present the keynote address. Kennedy is an environmental attorney, author, activist and clean technology entrepreneur. He is the founder, senior attorney and president of Waterkeeper Alliance, one of the fastest-growing grassroots environmental movements in the world.

Channelkeeper will also commemorate its 20th Anniversary with the release of a 20-year impact report, a new website and 20 multi-media profiles of Channelkeeper Heroes, local individuals who have supported the organization and its work over the past 20 years. It will also soon launch the Channelkeeper Challenge, a new initiative to encourage members of the community to explore the beauty of our coastal environment, engage in volunteer activities and act as environmental advocates. “We’re excited to celebrate 20 years of local environmental protection with initiatives that not only engage our community and inspire advocacy, but that also enable us to enjoy the extraordinary water resources we love and work hard to protect,� said Santa Barbara Channelkeeper executive director, Kira Redmond. “We’ve come a long way in the last two decades, and we have our work cut out for us in the years to come.

Partnership with CARP Growers boosts homeless services

The owner of Carpinteria’s Glass House Farms and president of CARP Growers, Graham Farrar, has put his Santa Barbara cannabis dispensary to work in supporting the Freedom Warming Centers of Santa Barbara County (FWC). FWC serves a critical role in sheltering homeless individuals when weather conditions imperil lives. Warming centers across the county open when the forecast during winter months calls for rain or when temperatures fall below 35 degrees. Farrar’s give-back program redirected 5 percent of select sales on CARP Growers products to FWC, generating $6,500.

The Farmacy’s give-back program was done in partnership with CARP Growers member farms, a group of Carpinteria Valley farms dedicated to community giving and responsible farming practices. CARP Growers brands Pacific Stone Brand, Josh D Farms, Autumn Brands, Headwaters, Cresco Cannabis and Glass House Farms participated.

“This partnership means so much to the people we are able to serve. Funds go directly to blankets, dry socks, meals and materials we need to protect those who are most vulnerable,” said Kathy Hayes, director of Freedom Warming Centers. “We were heartened earlier this winter when so many stepped up to fund our Warm-Up $30,000 fundraising campaign and that those who were inspired continue to provide for our programs and to save lives.”

Worried about taxes

After recent conversations with a couple of fairly young people who had just bought homes, I was surprised to learn how little they knew about Proposition 13 and why it was overwhelmingly passed by voters long ago.

I was also surprised that they thought it didn’t apply to them. Of course, it does!

And after about 10 years in their new home, they will be very glad to have the protection.

If real estate taxes are based on values, it’s impossible to budget future income to support it. The situation is even more difficult for seniors who have no way to pay tax increases.

Problems are worse or more complicated if it was a family business, a rental or a farm.

Some people are pushing to change or do away with the protection that is relied upon by so many of us.

The Prop. 13 on the March ballot is asking for a huge amount of bond money.

It seems to say repayment is from the General Fund. Although sadly, past experience shows ballot writers frequently hide some ugly details. Plus, there is a SCA 5 (Senate Constitutional Amendment) being discussed, perhaps already put up for a vote, that attacks Old Prop.

But the biggest threat is coming in November. As a senior, this really scares me.

I think it’s important for all seniors to be aware. Not only would it be devastating to me, I believe it is unnecessary. There are already ways to add certain fees and bond issues on the annual tax bill, just as our school bond was last year. That should be sufficient without beginning the slippery slope on the way to elimination of this important benefit.

On board with Das

I write this letter in strong support of Das Williams’ reelection as First District Supervisor. I have known Das since 2002–2003, when we were both marching up State Street to protest the looming war in Iraq. Even then, Das showed strong leadership qualities.

Since that time, Das has taken his natural talents for policy work and problem solving to various municipal and state elected positions, and honed his government skills, gathering the knowledge and experience to serve our district. I have met with Laura Capps. She is friendly and intelligent. But she does not have the breadth of experience that Das brings to the job, and which serves us so well.

I appreciated Das’ position on dealing with cannabis. He felt that permitting and fees would allow regulation to control a new industry and provide economic support to our dying flower industry. I am disappointed that, in the county’s rush on this, some neighbors, including the city of Carpinteria, felt that they had been left out of the process. Subsequently, some of these concerns have been addressed. Others have not. I look forward to working with Das to further protect our citizens.

Laura Capps has a dream of improving poverty, homelessness, climate change, rental problems, free lunch for kids at school, making changes to limit tspecial interest campaign donations, and stricter rules and regulations for cannabis problems that affect the students and residents of Carpinteria. Laura decided to run for supervisor because people wanted her to make changes, and she decided that a transparent leader was needed. She is as clean and pure as water: no campaign controversies. She has worked for years in the White House and has spent hundreds of hours advocating for common people.

Serving as a Santa Barbara School Board member for three years has given her the experience of working close to students and parents.

Laura Capps has the dream of working for us, the people of the First District in Santa Barbara County. This is an invitation to achieve her dream on March 3.

In contrast, Ms. Capps is a one-issue candidate who has never been elected to office. She sits on the Santa Barbara School Board in her first term, having been appointed without opposition. She has never held any other office. Until this campaign, I had never before seen Ms. Capps in Carpinteria—not at Avofest, not at a School Board meeting, never seen her at the beach. Das lives here with his two beautiful children who will be in our schools soon. He knows our community and is dedicated to serving us as well as can be done. Ms. Capps started her campaign with the support of the anticannabis activists around Foothill Road.

Read her campaign material on cannabis in Carpinteria—maybe some of it was true over two years ago, but not today.

We live here. I ride my bike around and take our daughter to school every day.

Our community is not “pervaded with cannabis odor.” The local ag economy, including cannabis farmers, provides thousands of Carpinteria jobs and today the cannabis farms provide some of the best salaries and benefits in local ag. The vast majority of us in the Carpinteria Valley support our local farmers. Let›s show it at the polls. Please vote and don›t miss the March 3 deadline.

“Hundreds” of outraged residents

Does Das Williams really believe what he says? “The cannabis controversy is largely a controversy in the media only, and that most Carpinteria residents aren’t as outraged as Capps has made it sound in four debates during Janu-

ary and February.” Has he not read the hundreds of letters from his constituents against the smell of cannabis since he was paid around $60,000 from the cannabis growers?

Hundreds of his constituents have been posting complaints on “Nextdoor” for years. Has he not heard, or I should say, listened to, the hundreds of his Carpinteria constituents complaining about the smell of cannabis at the County Board of Supervisors meeting for more than two years? Has he not read the years of documentation from the Carpinteria City Council complaining about the cannabis odors in residential areas effecting the health of Carpinteria High School students and residents whose homes are surrounded by cannabis farms? Has he not taken time to read and respond to the “Cannabis Resolution” from the Carpinteria City Council to the County Board of Supervisors?

Or is it that he chooses not to hear his constituents? Or has the $60,000 donated to him by the cannabis farmers helped close his ears and eyes to his constituents’ cries for help? Supervisor Williams has had years to correct his wrongs, long before Laura Capps entered the race for supervisor.

Gobsmacked by skunk-bud

Wow! The cannabis odors in Carpinteria have taken a decided uptick for the worse in the last week. We were in LA for the weekend but not long after crossing the county line on Sunday around 8:30 p.m., we were gobsmacked with skunk smells while in the car—and this with the windows closed.

Our home in the foothills also smelled pretty bad, and driving by the high school must have set a record for foul air. On Monday, Feb. 10, the pot odors got worse in the early afternoon and we went back into the house to dodge the stink.

Truly, if this is not arrested or abated, Carpinteria is in trouble—en route to becoming a community with some unlivable conditions. We have neighbors who would sell to escape, but our newfound cannabis reputation, along with daily skunk odor, is killing home sales we’re told, with some on the market for more than a year. Too many Carpinteria residents have allergies and runny noses they never had before. More than one neighbor has developed asthma.

Let’s face it: this is all the woeful result of the Board of Supervisors’ rushed, illconceived Cannabis Ordinance. We need dramatic change, an intervention, help.

Obituaries

Patricia Douglass 8/28/1925 – 2/3/2020

Patricia Douglass passed away at the age of 94, on Feb. 3, 2020, at her home with her brother at her side. She was born on Aug. 28, 1925 to parents Lester and Lillian Hall, in Portland, Oregon. Patty moved to Carpinteria in 2016 to be close to family.

She was well known around Carpinteria as the hat lady, because she wore hats that she crocheted out of beer and soda cans. Everywhere she went, people would see her and say, “I like your hat.”

She would thank them and tell them with a big smile on her face that she had made them.

Patty was married to Wade Wilson in 1943. They were married for 30 years before he passed away.

In 1966, she and her husband Wade and brother Gilbert ran a donut shop in Ventura and lived in Carpinteria for about four years. She remarried in 1979 to John Douglass and was married to him for 30 years as well until his death in 2010.

Patty owned two floral shops, West Cove Floral in West Covina and Beals Floral in Long Beach. She was very crafty and loved sewing and square dancing.

She was a high-ranking member of the Moose Lodge in Lodi, California.

Patty was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Josephine and Geraldine, brother Frank Hall, son Michael Wilson and great-granddaughter Ashlee Bradbury.

Patty is survived by her daughter Wanda Garcia (Ben) and brother Gilbert Hall (Tina). She also leaves behind her grandchildren Timmy Wilson (Wanda), Tammy Bradbury and Terry Bradbury (Belinda); great-grandchild Charles Bradbury (Catherine); great-great grandchildren Carson and Carlee Bradbury, and numerous nephews and nieces.

A memorial will be set at a later date.

served in the Peace Corps in Paraguay, and eventually dug roots in Connecticut, where her two daughters, Rachel and Lauren, were raised at her beloved Loomis Chaffee School. A true child of the Golden State, Gwendolyn happily made her way back home to California in 2001 where she lived in Carpinteria at the Cate School.

Everything Gwendolyn touched—her succulent garden, a basket of goodies for a student’s birthday, the choreography for a flash mob—was infused with grace, meticulous attention to detail, and a desire to make life better. To Gwendolyn, anything worth doing was worth doing beautifully. From the chaparral and eucalyptus to agaves and oak trees, the flora of California was reflected in her aesthetic and in her soul.

For 38 years, Gwendolyn was a “boarding school person.” She thrived living among teenagers. Her rare ability to greet a young person just as they were and to truly appreciate their unique personality was a gift to generations of students at both the Loomis Chaffee where she worked for 19 years and for another 19 years at Cate School. Gwendolyn could easily have been running the admissions show all along, but instead she chose to be part of a community with the latitude to immerse herself deeply in the multiple demands of boarding school life. She served Cate as the Senior Associate Director of Admission, in addition to roles including dorm parent, Day Student Advisor, choreographer and fitness instructor. Famous for her formal dinner table decorations and elaborate dorm snacks, Gwendolyn always strove to make every student feel at home away from home.

Shortly after moving back to California, Gwendolyn met her love, Corey Welles, and they were married in 2003.

A professional horticulturist, Corey’s passion for both the natural world, and the adventurous world, met their match in Gwendolyn. Weekends would find them both in overalls and big hats in their garden, lovingly re-arranging pots of succulents as they turned their home on the “Mesa” into an oasis. When their yard was featured in the Carpinteria Beautiful garden tour, it was a surprise to no one, as they set the standard for what a California garden can be.

Gwedolyn passed away peacefully, holding Corey’s hand, after a valiant six-year battle with cancer. She leaves behind a multitude of loved ones who will always hold her memory—and their favorite name for her—in each agave and every bluebird that they see.

There will be a celebration of Gwendolyn’s life on Saturday, March 21, 2020, at 3 p.m. at Cate School. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Gwendolyn Pierce Memorial Scholarship at Cate School.

In a beautiful place with her husband by her side, Gwendolyn Pierce passed away peacefully on Jan. 30, 2020.

Wendy. Wen. Mom. The many names of Gwendolyn Pierce (1956-2020) reflect the breadth of her relationships and the depth of her impact. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend, teacher and colleague, Gwendolyn had a special name from each person in her life. While all of those roles were important to her, Gwendolyn’s favorite was certainly the name that her two beloved grandchildren called her: Noni.

More than anything, Gwendolyn loved her family. Her husband, Corey Welles, her daughters, Lauren McAllister and Rachel McAllister Sadler, and most of all, her grandchildren, Henry and Charlotte Sadler. Nothing made her happier than a well-planned visit with her family. She took particular joy in the weddings of her daughters: Rachel to Henry Sadler and Lauren to Paul Hendrick.

A native of California, Gwendolyn was born into a family of six. She is survived by her four sisters and one brother: Susan Pierce DeVaughn, Laurie Pierce, Lisa Pierce, David Pierce (and wife Jane), and Taylor Beckett. All six kids competed on the Altadena Town & Country Club swim team and Gwendolyn was a particularly strong backstroker who won the award as the top female swimmer on the team as a 17-year-old. Always a lover of the water, she was a member of the varsity water polo and swim teams at John Muir High School in Pasadena. Music and dance were of paramount importance to Gwendolyn. In her high school years, she was a performer in Disney on Parade. A serious student of ballet and modern dance, Gwendolyn later channeled this skill into choreography work for school musicals and her much beloved fitness classes.

After graduating from Pasadena City College, Gwendolyn also studied at the University of Southern California and the University of Connecticut. Gwendolyn

Stephen Douglas Tilford 7/30/1930 – 1/28/2020

Stephen Douglas Tilford passed away on Jan. 28, 2020, from a complication from a dental procedure done locally. Steve was born on July 30, 1930 at St. Francis Hospital, to Douglas Tilford and Caroline Martin Tilford. He attended Monte Vista Elementary, La Cumbre Junior High School and Santa Barbara High School class of 1948. He enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in England.

In 1954, Steve married Marlen Squirer and started working in the sheet metal business. They moved to Carpinteria and had two children, Lisa and John, and lived there till 1969. He worked as a journeyman metal worker and started welding for his employer at the time.

After he got divorced, Steve decided to start his own company, Tilford Welding.

During this time, he raced off-road in the Baja 1000, Mint 400 and many more. He later was support crew for an IMSA car, and numerous land speed car projects. He was the go-to guy for out of the normal welding projects. His son John joined him in the late 70s; together they had many adventures with racing projects and hot rod modification, occasionally being written about which he always downplayed as just doing his job.

Steve married Virginia Wood and retired in 1989, moving to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and later Spokane, Washington.

He lived in the Pacific Northwest until 2012 when he came back to live in Carpinteria. He said he wanted to come home to be with family and enjoy his days walking and riding his bike. He had one more project in him, so at the age of 83, he started helping Martin Loge build an aluminum body for his Maserati 450 project car. He had a great time helping with the project, which turned out to be his swan song.

Dad leaves behind his ex-wife Marlen; ex-wife Virginia; daughter Lisa Kelly (Conrad); son John (Janet); grandsons Stephen Corral (Lily) and Greg Corral (Lucia); and great grandkids Sophia, Matteo, Simone and Gianna. He fondly remembered Dick and Don Stevens, Kelly Conley and Stacy Moore, and numerous long-time customers. I think Dad would like to be remembered with a smile and a nod.

Rosa “Rosie” Martinez 11/6/1934 – 2/8/2020

Rosie Martinez went to heaven on Feb. 8, 2020, surrounded by her family.

She joins her father and mother, Juan and Maximina Gonzales; brothers Louis (Dolores), Robert, Gabriel and George Gonzales and sister Ramona Martinez.

She was born and raised in Carpinteria and attended local schools. She spent many years working for the Aluminum Filter Company and Gallup & Stribling Orchids.

Rosie will always be remembered as a loving, helpful, caring and generous person to all of her family and friends. She was well known for her gardening and a gift of a green thumb. Many often brought their “sick” plants to her and she would bring them back to life and return them.

Whoever she met, she would open her heart to them and each of us felt special in her presence. She was always considerate of others. She also loved the beach and was an avid body surfer. We all know Rosie loved things that had bling (sparkle). She also participated and travelled with many Carpinteria Senior Citizen events. She loved to get out of town with her husband, Lorenzo, and travel to many places. One of her favorites was Hawaii.

She is survived by her husband Lorenzo Martinez, daughter Annette Dutdut (Conrado), sons Stanley Martinez (Ana Marie) and Martin Martinez (Terri); grandchildren Stephen Medel (Carly), Valerie Murray (Miles), Kristen George (Craig), Nicholas Martinez, Benjamin Martinez and Anthony Martinez (Hannah); eight great-grandchildren; brothers Joseph (Otilla) and Fred (Eleanor) Gonzales; brother-in-law Mike Martinez; sisters-in-law Mercy Martinez, Kati Martinez, Gloria Gonzales, Betty Gonzales and Beatrice Miles; and many nieces, nephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Her funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, 1532 Linden Ave. in Carpinteria on Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2020, at 10 a.m., followed by her burial at Carpinteria Cemetery.

Louise Lopez Sanchez 6/6/1919 – 2/9/2020

Louise Lopez Sanchez was born June 6, 1919 and was a very proud lifelong resident of Carpinteria, stemming from a large extended family of six generations of Carpinterians. She met her husband Dan Sanchez after high school and the two were married in St. Joseph’s Chapel on June 18, 1939. They went on to have a life full of traveling in Europe and across most of the United States.

Louise was a very active volunteer and parishioner at St. Joseph Church, and she attributed her longevity to “living a clean life” and her faith. Although Louise had no children of her own, she is survived by many loving godchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Louise’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful, caring staff at Villa Alamar Memory Care.

A funeral mass for Louise will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, at St. Joseph Church with interment to follow at Carpinteria District Cemetery.

Healthy pups usually start arriving in February; January births often fail to thrive.

When the waters are clear, it’s fun to watch the seals swooping about underwater—they’re so agile. But how do they forage when it’s dark or the water is murky? Harbor seals see exceptionally well in poor light. They have many rod cells and their pupils dilate widely. But even blind seals have been found surviving, due to their tactile senses. Their sensitive whisker-like vibrissae detect vibrations. Studies show seals can follow the wake of a miniature submarine in the dark.

Disturbances

Minor disturbances were caused by a dog at the overlook, a jet ski and a truck on the pier. However, on three occasions people on the beach chased most to the ocean. Code Enforcement was contacted, and investigation continues based on photos and identifying information obtained in two of the incidents.

Visitors

Volunteers counted 1,178. People came from Korea, Canada, France, Illinois, Washington, Maine, New York, Vermont, Missouri, Utah, Texas, Colorado, Montana, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Massachusetts, Virginia, Florida, Maryland, Wisconsin, Idaho and Oklahoma. Volunteers also greeted several clubs and a Cate School group.

Sunday, Feb. 2

7:53 a.m. / Possession / Bailard Avenue

Deputies were dispatched to Bailard Avenue to investigate a man inside a vehicle who was causing a disturbance by sounding an air horn. Deputies located the man and observed his vehicle running and an open container of marijuana on top of the center console. A search of the man’s vehicle revealed a plastic container containing a useable quantity of methamphetamine. The man was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

9 a.m. / Urinating in Public / Ash Avenue at the Beach

Deputies saw a man urinating in the bushes about 20 feet from the open public restrooms. He was contacted and cited for urinating in public and released on a citation.

9:30 a.m. / Open Container / 800 block Linden Avenue

Deputies contacted a man to check on his welfare. He had stitches on the side of his face and appeared to have been recently injured. The man told deputies he was just released from the hospital and took a cab back down to Carpinteria. He said he fell the day before because he was intoxicated and received the stitches on his face from the fall. The man was drinking vodka out of a coffee container and had two bottles of vodka in his pocket.

The vodka was poured out at the scene and the man was cited and released.

10: 51 a.m. / Stolen Phone / 400 Palm Ave. (State Park)

The victim reported that his cell phone and keys were taken by a male suspect. A witness saw a man who was later identified, riding away on his bike and took a photo of him. Deputies contacted the man, but could not locate a phone or keys on him. The victim was not returning deputies’ calls. The witness did not actually see the man take the property, just riding away in the area. Information was passed on to State Parks. The man on the bike was cited for smoking in public and released.

Sunday, Feb. 2

1:23 a.m. / Possession / Carpinteria High School

While checking on two suspicious people seen walking around the high school campus with flashlights, one of the subjects was found to have methamphetamine in the pocket of his shorts. The man was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Monday, Feb. 3

11:50 a.m. / Counter Report / Carpinteria Sub-Station

Old ammunition was dropped off at the station. The box of ammo was booked for destruction.

Tuesday, Feb. 4

4 p.m. / Auto Burglary / Lookout Park Summerland

The victim reported that an unknown suspect forced entry to his vehicle by unlocking the door with an unknown entry tool. A backpack and laptop were reported stolen.

3:03 a.m. / Possession / Linden and Carpinteria avenues

A deputy sergeant conducted a traffic stop on a man for an equipment violation.

A consent search of the vehicle led to the discovery of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. The man was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Wednesday, Feb. 5

11:24 a.m. / False Registration Tabs / Thunder Bowl

A man was contacted in his vehicle that was displaying a current registration tab but the registration was expired from 2019. The suspect admitted to not paying the registration and obtaining a false tab.

He was cited for the violation.

4:31 p.m. / Felony Vandalism / Holly Avenue

Overnight, an unknown suspect(s) removed six plants and several rocks that had been landscaped by the victim on a portion of city property connected to the victim’s property. This caused over $400 in damage.

11 p.m. / Vehicle Code Violations / Thunder Bowl

An 18-year-old Camarillo resident was contacted during a traffic stop for no front plate. There was a strong odor of marijuana coming from the man’s vehicle and he stated that he had a suspended license.

He was cited and released.

1:52 a.m. / Possession / Casitas Pass and Rincon roads

A woman was contacted. A bindle of methamphetamine was located in close proximity to her. After an investigation, she was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Thursday, Feb. 6

7:28 a.m. / Warrant Arrest / 800 block Linden Avenue

A man was contacted on Linden Avenue. He had an outstanding warrant for his arrest and he was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

8:33 a.m. / DUI Traffic Collision / 5300 block 8th Street

A caller reported that a man was driving west on 8th Street when he collided with several parked vehicles. Upon arrival, deputies smelled an odor of alcohol from the man and he was arrested for DUI. The man requested to take a breath test that resulted in 0.10% BAC.

1:45 p.m. / Violation of Restraining Order / Birch Street

A man has been contacting his exgirlfriend and her children in violation of a served protective order.

7:21 p.m. / Robbery / 4400 block Via Real

A 16-year-old Newbury Park resident called the Sheriff’s dispatch to report that he had robbed a Chevron station and said he had a firearm. Deputies arrived and conducted a high-risk stop as he was sitting in his car. A vehicle was traveling southbound on Highway 101 when it left the roadway, went down the embankment and ended up on the railroad tracks. Just then, a train that was traveling northbound and struck the vehicle, pushing it off the tracks. The train was moving at a slow speed. The driver was able to exit the vehicle with minor injuries.

Pavement across Carpinteria will be getting an upgrade soon as the city moves forward with plans to rehabilitate a downtown parking lot and 109,000 sq ft of local roadways. on Feb. 10, the Carpinteria City Council voted unanimously to open a call for bids for two pavement projects.

The first project is to repave Parking lot 2, including Cactus lane from Wullbrandt Way to Carpinteria avenue, where Tipuana trees planted three decades ago have caused extensive damage. Tipuana trees, lauded for their beautiful blooms and shade, also have shallow root systems that bulge and buckle pavement and sidewalks. In addition to new pavement, the downtown parking lot behind Corktree Cellars will have six Tipuanas removed and replaced with species selected by the city’s Tree advisory Board. new lighting will also be installed along with aDa improvements. Three Tipuanas will remain in the area but will be contained by planters with root barriers.

During re-paving, the city also plans to install an underground utility conduit in preparation for a future, separate project to move overhead utility lines underground.

The second project now open for bids is the 2020 Pavement rehabilitation Project, in which 109,000 square feet of local roadways will be repaved, including Carpinteria avenue (between santa Ynez and sandyland Cove road), 8th street (between Elm and Maple avenues), and nipomo Drive (between linden avenue and Tomol Drive). streets were selected based on road condition data collected by the city. In a cost-saving effort, the city plans to use asphalt rather than reinforced concrete.

Recycling, still unresolved

Carpinteria City Manager David Durflinger reported that no viable solution has been achieved yet for a recycling station in Carpinteria. In august of last year, rePlanet, California’s largest recycling company, went out of business, shutting down 284 recycling centers, including the one located behind Carpinteria’s albertsons on Casitas Pass road. The state’s Convenience Zone law requires that there be a recycling center where beverage containers can be redeemed at grocery stores that have over $2 million in sales. In Carpinteria, albertsons and smart & Final are in the same zone, and require at least one recycling depository.

“There’s no indication that rePlanet is coming back,” said Durflinger. “We’re

City staff will bring a comprehensive report to city council at an upcoming meeting.

Public discord over beach dumping

several residents attended the Feb. 10 City Council meeting to voice grievances over the county’s proposal to continue dumping on Carpinteria’s ash avenue beach. Beach dumping has been occurring at the beach by an emergency permit following the Jan. 9, 2018 debris flow event. However, a current environmental impact report is being conducted to determine if beach dumping will be allowed to continue past the two-year emergency timeframe.

“It affects me in more than one way,” said one resident. “Three hundred trucks kicking up dust and rubble. God knows what’s in that dust. I have to have my house power washed now. My lungs are in terrible shape... You can’t walk the beach. The rocks are not river rocks, they are not rounded. They are left in a

The city manager noted that the most recent beach deposit was last summer and that the city is involved in the process with the county developing the environmental impact report which will analyze different options, including trucking and dredging. Durflinger also noted that the city had been awarded a living shoreline Grant to study reestablishing a dune system.

Members of City Council presented commendations to the 2019 Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Congress Carpinterian of the Year, lori Bowles, and Junior Carpinterian of the Year, Emily Calkins.

Bowles and Calkins were honored at the Jan. 25 Community awards Banquet held at the United Boys & Girls Clubs of santa Barbara County, Carpinteria Unit.

CUSD to hold kindergarten information night

Carpinteria Unified School District will hold a kindergarten and transitional kindergarten Parent Information Night in the auditorium at Carpinteria Children’s Project at 5201 8th St. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 6 to 7 p.m. As of Feb. 18, kindergarten registration packets will be available for pick up at school offices at Aliso, Summerland and Canalino/Carpinteria Family schools. Families must register at their home school in their attendance area, and parents or guardians can check the street boundaries on the CUSD website, or call a school office.

Families interested in applying for the Carpinteria Family School, a school of choice, or the Dual Language Immersion Program, must submit a completed registration packet by March 20 to the school office. A lottery for both programs will be held on Thursday, April 2 at 5:30 p.m. at the CUSD District Office Board room.

It is so crazy hard to watch your kids fail. And yet, letting a kid fall flat on their face may be the most loving and optimistic thing we can do.

We need to let kids fail. That’s tough because we really want them to have the best chance to be successful, and that’s a natural desire. But how much sheltering is too much? Helicopter parents hover close to their little (and not so little) ones.

Bubble-wrapping parents let them go a little farther afield but not without a protective coating. Lawnmower parents mow down barriers, so their kids have an easier path from here to there.

We and our kids are complex humans and occasionally hovering, bubble wrapping and mowing makes sense if it is helping them become more independent.

But more often it reflects the parent’s worries. As a result, it may create those worries in the child or make the child less confident because it’s evident the parent doesn’t think they will be successful on their own. Here’s an extreme example: When I worked at UCSB I had a couple parents contact me seeking internships for their college-aged students. Woah.

Well intentioned? Absolutely. Likely those young adults should have been given a chance to fail, get up, dust themselves off, try again or try something else that suited them better? Yes. Children will grow up to face the world by themselves, at times without parents or family or their village. We are raising adults. So, we must let them learn to cope and learn from failure. Psychologist Madeleine Levine writes in “Teach Your Children Well: Why Values and Coping Skills Matter More than Grades, Trophies, or ‘Fat Envelopes,’” “we know (albeit reluctantly) that life will throw curveballs at our children regardless of how hard we may try to protect them. The growth (emotional, psychological, cogni-

tive and spiritual) needed to make one’s way through life comes out of challenge, and challenge can bring disappointment, anger and frustration… What we really want to cultivate is well-being, which includes a generous portion of optimism and the coping skills, and therefore the resilience, that make adaptive recovery from challenge possible. As an added bonus, researchers tell us that the very characteristics that are likely to encourage our child’s emotional well-being are the same ones that will make them successful in the classroom.”

That optimism that children can handle and learn from challenge and failure is provided by the child’s family and community. Those extended family members can tell the kids in your life stories about loved ones falling down and getting back up and persevering. If they did it, so can you!

Another optimistic word is “yet.”

When a child in your life complains that they can’t swim a length of the pool or read or make friends, an optimistic response is that they can’t do it yet. What skills can the child learn over time to help them get there no matter how long it takes? Couple the “yet” with “I’ve got your back” and “I value you deeply no matter what” and you can be there in the background while they build independence and confidence.

We as parents and extended family will still be there, loving children without regard to our specific dreams for them.

We can hold the optimism that they will blossom into the creative individuals that they will be—independent and able to get back up after falling down. We will cringe when they skin their knees, but we will be there with band-aids and hugs, with confidence that the next time will be easier. We will know it’s part of growing up.

Mount Carmel students participated in Catholic Schools Week Jan. 26 through 31, with the theme “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” The “day of service” was held Wednesday, Jan. 29, with students in all grade levels working in various capacities in local communities. First graders made Valentines with residents at Gran Vida and fifth graders sorted over 4,000 pounds of food at the Santa Barbara Food Bank. Our Lady of Mount Carmel Principal Tracie Simolon said, “At the heart of Catholic education is putting our faith in action through service to others.”

Carpinteria at center of First District Supervisor contest

On the issue of housing, Capps wants to target the underlying issue of poverty.

Climate change and the importance of energy efficiency

With wildfires and power outages becoming commonplace, utility companies, local and state governments, environmental groups and many others are working diligently to find innovative solutions to the current energy crisis we’re facing. We’re in the midst of a turning point, a time when we can’t continue the way we have for decades, one where we have to decide what the future of energy in California will look like.

Many of us are all too familiar with the stress and inconvenience that comes from power outages. the words “public Safety power Shutoff” are not well greeted by the residents and businesses they affect. then again, the very real and valid fear of devastating wildfires reveals power outages as the lesser of two evils. however, public Safety power Shutoffs are a short-term solution to a much bigger issue. it’s important to address our energy crisis not only to achieve energy assurance, but to confront an even bigger beast: climate change. these energy issues are directly connected to the upturn in our average global temperature. Not only will we continue to see more drought and wildfires as the temperature rises, coastal communities like ours will have to address sea level rise. We’ll continue to experience losses in biodiversity. there will be mass migrations out of places that become unlivable, agriculture will become unviable in places where it once thrived, and the list goes on. to address climate change, we need to be taking big steps to decrease our greenhouse gas emissions. electricity generates 28 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. one way we can decrease those emissions is by generating

As costs keep getting lower and more providers enter the market, i encourage you to explore whether solar (and battery storage) are an option for your home. start? Many energy service companies offer free home energy audits to determine how your home could be made more efficient. Unable to afford new insulation or windows? try insulated curtains.

You’re not alone in trying to figure out how to make your home efficient and reliable. More and more programs exist to help people make their homes more efficient. For example, Southern California edison (SCe) offers several programs for income-qualified customers, including those living in mobile homes and multi-family complexes. Check out their energy Savings Assistance program to see if you qualify for free or low-cost appliance upgrades. take a look at their rebates and see how you could save on smart thermostats and electric vehicles. there are many opportunities available for residential energy upgrades, from SCe and otherwise.

“D’Art Santa Barbara,” Carpinterian filmmaker Larry Nimmer’s new film, was chosen as an award winner at the American Filmmatic Arts Awards in Brooklyn, New York, held on Feb. 9.

The film can be viewed on YouTube. com. “D’Art” uses the randomness of the dart to approach its subject matter. the premiere episode in a series, “D’Art Santa Barbara” starts with Nimmer throwing a dart at the map of the Santa Barbara open Studio tour to determine the first artist featured.

Nimmer interviews the artist about their work and influences, then has the featured artist throw the next dart at the open Studios map. Seven artists are featured in the Santa Barbara episode: Karen Aggeler, Danuta Bennett, Stephen Robeck, Rob Robinson, Rick Garcia, Cathy Quiel and larry R. Rankin. each artist’s segment is 10 to 15 minutes in length. Nimmer is an emmy-nominated filmmaker as well as a conceptual artist, based in Carpinteria. he is currently working on another series titled “D’Art Museum” involving a train trip from los Angeles to Boston and the dart to randomly explore artists in museums.

Carty recognized as CEF’s inaugural Lifetime Honorary Advisor

At its Jan. 17 board meeting, the Carpinteria Education Foundation named Marybeth Carty its inaugural Lifetime Honorary Advisor. The recognition sets a benchmark and appreciation for volunteerism. Along with promoting excellence in the Carpinteria Unified School District, CEF’s goals include channeling private sector resources to CUSD and involving the community in understanding the needs of the district.

Carty’s involvement with the theninformal group began when her two children were students at Canalino Elementary School in the early 1990s, back when Carpinteria elementary schools were separated by grade level rather than neighborhoods.

Her father-in-law, former district superintendent Dr. Bill Carty, was a founder of CEF; he joined local leaders, who understood the collective impact of funding for schools, to create the organization.

A significant gift from Doug Otto and Deckers launched CEF in the very beginning. The gift was stock options that generated around $200,000, which provided the original funding. Dr. Carty facilitated the donation.

“From starting Orchard to Ocean to securing donations from local businesses, Marybeth has ensured our students have access to programs and materials that has ensured their success for decades,” said Casey Balch, CEF board president “In accepting this title, I want to honor the legacy of Bill Carty where it all began.

His deep and abiding love for the community,” said Marybeth.

Her let’s-get-this-done work ethic inspired other parents, and soon, CEF was earning straight As for fundraising. She created the Orchard 2 Ocean 5K, 10K and 1 Mile Fun Run, the first district-wide fundraiser and the longest-standing race in Carpinteria.

Marybeth remembers the Orchard 2 Ocean idea being a hard sell to the board.

They couldn’t believe that people would pay money to run. The race though has had continued success. It raises money for the district, promotes health and fitness, encourages parental volunteerism, invites out-of-towner participation adding a boost to the local economy, and almost anybody can participate.

Marybeth Carty “I’m really proud of it. I like to think it created a generation of runners. That was the first race (Carpinteria athlete) Matt Organista ever ran,” Marybeth noted.

During her tenure on the board, her notable accomplishments included helping to generate community partnerships with local businesses, such as, Venoco, CKE, Benton Oil and Chevron, and chairing the $90 million bond Measure U in 2014. “My favorite part of serving on the board was being focused on creating good and we could witness the impact of the work ... school grants, scholarships …” she added.

Marybeth finds it refreshing to see the perspective of today’s parents whose children are in CUSD schools, observing a tremendous amount of dedication. “After all,” she said, quoting Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”

“Marybeth was and continues to be a tremendous supporter of CUSD students.

We are so thrilled to present her with the Carpinteria Education Foundation’s first honorary board member position,” said Balch.

Losing Kobe brings memories of Kobe

The recent passing of Kobe Bryant and the others with him in the helicopter crash in Calabasas hit people the world over with a visceral sense of loss.

For one Carpinteria Laker fan, the tragedy has been especially hard to take.

Doris Grant lost her beloved dog Kobe, named for the great player, in 2018, and the helicopter crash has brought back memories of her dearest friend.

“We were always together,” Grant said of her dog, “That’s why his passing was so devastating.” A certified therapy dog with over 500 visits to elderly patients, Kobe was recognized by Therapy Dogs International for his service, and Grant said that many of the people she and Kobe served appreciated his calm and caring demeanor. In 2011, Kobe won first place in the big dog category during the pet parade in downtown Carpinteria.

Grant and Kobe attended Carpinteria Community Church together, where he was known for singing along with “Happy Birthday” whenever the congregation sang to celebrate a member’s birthday. “Kobe sat quietly during all

I did so much better this year in the Rincon Classic than I did last year. Yes, I took another fifth place in my heat and failed to advance, but gone was my expletive-laden self-recrimination.

I merely shrugged my shoulders and congratulated my buddy Geoff Faro on advancing. Last year, I felt sick for days after, a hangover from past competitive disappointments. The book of Ecclesiastes (Ch.1 vs. 2) says it best: “Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.” (There’s nothing like a touch of scripture from the old King James to put things in perspective.)

So, I lost but I lost on my own terms.

I’ve been riding an 8’2” round-pin Twin Fin this winter, which is a lot of surfboard, and better suited to bigger waves. But the board has such a comfortable, gliding feeling in its paddling and long, projecting turns that on the day of competition I chose to stay with it rather than switch to my shorter, more performance-oriented board. Also, the surf had some meat to it that day, and I’d tried both boards further up the point before my heat, and the short one felt skittery after having surfed all winter on the wave-riding equivalent of a Cadillac.

Back in the cove, suiting up for my heat, another surfing buddy (a surfer of great talent and international renown) encouraged me to ride the shorter board.

“There’s no one out,” he said, indicating best part of surfing the Classic—there only being five other guys in the line-up during the 20 minuets each surfer gets to display his or her best moves. Not one to gainsay one of the all-time surfing greats, I dutifully grabbed the 6’2” twin Fin and began trotting up the point. Solid advice be-damned, I thought, the 6’2” doesn’t feel right, and I turned back, grabbed the 8’2” then ran up the point again to pick my way across the cobbles at the start time for the heat.

And once I hit the water and felt that easy momentum with each paddle stroke, I was happy. Fortunately, one of the bigger sets that were occasionally stacking into the point that day materialized, and I glided in on the familiar stability of the bigger board and rode it all the way through the cove. There was nothing impressive to my ride, the board running comfortably ahead of the most critical part of the wave, my “maneuvers” consisting of banking turns off the bottom and re-adjustments to keep somewhat in the vicinity of the curl.

Perhaps had I got a better jump on another wave, I would have made it through a tubing section that knocked me off. Perhaps had my arms not gone leaden and I was able to catch another solid one at the top of the point, the heat would have

gone differently for me. But in choosing the board that felt right, I did the surfing that was most comfortable. I’m cool with that, and I’m cool with coming in fifth place and not advancing.

I can’t say anything against competition, and I don’t buy the argument that somehow the contest format doesn’t allow a surfer’s talents to shine through. I find competition grueling and unpleasant, but I have deep reserves of respect for the surfers who can bend themselves to its demands and make the series of correct decisions and perform based on what the ocean offers in a short window of time. The fitness requirement takes a nearly full-time commitment alone, and will not be met by merely surfing a few times a week when there happens to be waves.

But a few sessions a week when there happens to be waves is all the time I can give to this watery pursuit at this stage of life. Like fishing, however, I am quite sure that the days spent surfing are not deducted from one’s allotted days in life. Also, I know for certain, whether it’s surfing one loves, or any of the other myriad joys available to us, that it is supremely important to take the time

Warriors boys tennis rebuilds after phenomenal 2019 season

The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team had an amazing season last year, going all the way to the CIF-SS quarterfinals before falling to Mater Dei. “Basically, we were right there in (CIF) Division Three, it definitely could have gone either way, it’s the best team we’ve ever had by far,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant of his team’s 10-8 loss in the postseason. The Warriors ended up finishing a perfect 8-0 in the Citrus Coast League (CCL) and 19-5 overall.

But Carpinteria, who has either shared or won the last three league titles, will be hard pressed to come close to last year’s success as the Warriors graduated 10 players from last year’s team. Gone are the outstanding doubles teams of Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson and Cameron Gralewksi and Solomon NahooikaikaAnderson and Kirby Zapata, along with the stellar singles play of Myles Morgan.

“We were fairly balanced, we had Myles (Morgan) in singles, but doubles were our main strength,” explained Bryant.

The Warriors will be led by their captain, senior Ian McCurry, who has played on the varsity squad for three years, joining the team after playing baseball his freshman year. McCurry partnered with Esteban Zapata in doubles last year and figures to get his share of doubles play this season. But with Zapata now competing in the CIF playoffs for the boys basketball, McCurry will have to find a new partner. With only seven active participants now in the lineup, the combinations are still a work-in-progress.

However, Warrior sophomore Austin Stone, who made a big contribution in singles as a freshman last season, is returning. Also back, are Corban Pampel and sophomore Ian Thomas. Junior Isaac Benitez, who plays on the soccer team as well, could also play a key role. “If we play the best we can in league games and really train with the other (non-league) games that we have I think there’s a chance we could get another league title this year, but it’s not going to be easy,” said McCurry who played some singles last year and may be called upon to do so this season.

As in recent years, the Warriors will once again have a challenging nonleague schedule interwoven within CCL play. Included in that schedule are a number of Division-One schools: Cate, Dos Pueblos, San Marcos, Santa Barbara and Thacher. They will also be tested at the Ojai Invitational in April. “The schedule has to be the nastiest I’ve ever put together,” said Bryant.

“The team right now, we lost a lot of players that were really good, it was just really fun to practice with and be a part of the team with,” said McCurry. “This year, the kids still on the team are really close together, they’re still practicing, even though there’s still less of us, we’re still a pretty good group that’s playing.”

Carpinteria hosts Simi Valley on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. to start the season in pursuit of their fourth consecutive league title.

February 5 - The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team beat Nordhoff in their final game of the season, 52-35. The league victory total was three more wins than Carpinteria had last year in the Citrus Coast League’s inaugural season. It was a challenging season for the Warriors, as they had to find a coach for the final two weeks of the season. JV coach Noah Gilbert stepped in for the final four games. “The future looks bright with only one senior graduating, (Kayla Kelley),” said Carpinteria assistant coach Weldon Nomura. The Warriors finish the season 3-7 in the Citrus Coast League and 6-14 overall.

Fifty-five female student-athletes from Carpinteria High School attended the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table event known as the Women and Girls In Sports Luncheon on Feb. 3 at the Earl Warren Showgrounds. The annual event celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day, the lasting impact of Title IX legislation and outstanding female athletes in the Santa Barbara region. Warrior coaches Lucy Carleton (girls soccer), Weldon Nomura (girls basketball and track and field) and Dakotah Wilcox (softball) were also in attendance.

February 6 - The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team beat Malibu, 52-31, in the final game of the regular season. With the win, the Warriors clinched a share of the Citrus Coast League title with Nordhoff, both finishing at 9-1. The two teams split their two meetings with each team winning on the other squad’s home floor. Carpinteria was led by Dylan O’Neill’s 19 points and six rebounds. Gabe Medel knocked down 10 points and grabbed four rebounds, while Jose Suarez had nine and Ian Reed had three, dished out seven assists, secured six rebounds and nabbed three steals.

February 5 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team concluded their season with a 2-1 loss to Nordhoff in a Citrus Coast League game. The Rangers got on the board first on a goal from five yards out. They added a second goal off a free kick.

“Our keeper, Karen Gamez, made a great attempt at the well-placed free kick but came up just short,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Bryant moved Dayne Wagner to the center midfielder role and put Aly Springer at the center defender spot in the second half. At her new spot, Wagner fed a through ball to Cyndey Smolnikar who beat the keeper to get Carpinteria on the board. “I thought Ashley Verdusco, Zahea Hamadi had very good games tonight, but we say goodbye to seniors, Dayne Wagner, Yaritza Santes Rosales, Erika Estrada, Aly Springer and Martinique Greeves,” said Bryant. Carpinteria finishes their season 2-14-3 overall and 0-8-2 in the Citrus Coast League.

CHS Student-Athlete Miles Souza wins SBART’s Phil Womble Award

Carpinteria High School’s Miles Souza is the Warriors most recent recipient of the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award. Souza, who plays both basketball and baseball, was inspired to serve the community at an early age. On his bedroom wall is a poster of the late Roberto Clemente that was given to him by his fifth-grade teacher. The poster contains a quote by Clemente which states, “Anytime you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world, and you don’t, then you’re wasting your time on earth.”

Souza has lived these words by volunteer coaching for the Santa Barbara Pony League and the Carpinteria Valley Little League. He also has assisted with Carpinteria AySO and volunteers for the Warriors’ annual Russell Cup and other track and field meets during the season. Additionally, he’s served as an AVID tutor on campus.

Souza has earned Academic All-League honors for three straight years with a GPA of 4.5. He was the recipient of CHS’s Daryl Brown Warrior Award last year and was named first team All-Citrus Coast League in baseball as a sophomore. The junior is a member of the California Scholarship Federation and has won the President’s Award for Academic Excellence, possessing advanced skills in both science and math.

Soto helped revive the school’s Eight-Man program, putting together a team in 2005 for the first time in decades. Soto has had three teams go undefeated during the regular season, and two of his teams have reached the semifinals in the CIF playoffs. “This honor is really humbling and I’m grateful to be recognized, but the real recognition should go to every player I’ve been lucky enough to coach and the great assistants I’ve been lucky enough to work with,” said the longtime coach who is also a Carpinteria High School Alum.

“I’ve also been blessed to have kind and thoughtful mentors... special shout out to coach (Lou) Panizzon and coach (Mike) Warren for teaching me so much.”

February 11 - The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team visited the Cerritos Dons for their first-round CIF match, swimming away with a 10-9 win. “Top scorers for the game were senior Sadie Mead, who had five goals throughout the game and was crucial for the Warriors’ success,” said Warriors coach Sergio Castaneda. “Sophomore Briana Rodriguez also had a phenomenal game, scoring three goals on her own and turning shots the Dons blocked into rebound goals.” Carpinteria finished atop the Citrus Coast League at 7-1 and overall are now 14-6. The Warriors will host Rowland Heights at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, for their second-round match.

February 4 - The Cate School girls soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to St. Bonaventure. The Rams finish with a 7-4-2 record on the season. The saves by Taylor Kane totaled nine for the game. “Neema Mugofwa dominated the midfield with over 20 completed passes and put several beautiful balls across the face of the goal,” said Rams coach Taylor Wyatt. Tali Nam, Grace Blankenhorn, Rachel Ma, Charlotte Weis, Jolea Moes and Emie Nam worked so hard and ran so much to play both in the midfield, up top, and sometimes even defensively.” In the back, Kim Rogers, Olivia Dorion, Lea De Vylder, Tamsyn Taptich, and Ali Istanbullu blocked repeated attempts by the Seraphs to play long balls over the top throughout the match. Lilly Riehl was in front of the net several times, but Cate was unable to get on the scoreboard.

February 5 - The Cate School boys basketball team beat Laguna Blanca, 71-36, to wrap up the regular season with a 15-4 overall record and a 5-2 Frontier League record to finish second in the league. Rams coach Andy Gil celebrated the seniors by allowing them to play the entirety of the first quarter. “Special group of guys, two of them, Khadim Pouye and Thomas Nettesheim who I have had since they were freshman,” explained Gil. Other Cate seniors playing in their final regular season game were: John Rigsby Shelburne, Parker May, Scott Holmes and Ethan Ng. Laguna was led by Christian Branch who finished with 14, while Cate had a balanced day with seven players scoring six points or more. The Rams will participate in this week’s CIF playoffs.

February 4 - The Cate School girls basketball team swept Frontier League play with a victory over La Reina, 59-34. “Our backcourt defense led by Meena Baher, Piper Brooks and Lily Zanze flustered the Regents in the opening minutes,” said Rams coach Laura Moore whose team got out to an early lead. The Regents fought back in the second quarter with outside shooting and second-chance shots. “Playing without guard Jess Yang, the Rams became fatigued and careless with the ball, giving La Reina far too many fast break opportunities,” said Moore. Baher scored nine points in the third quarter to finish with 20. Forward Maya Blattberg contributed 10 of her 16 points in the third and fourth quarters. Deb Brittain tallied eight points, as the Rams finish Frontier League play undefeated (8-0), with an average margin of victory of 32 points. Cate hosts Costa Mesa on Thursday, Feb. 13, in the first round of the CIF playoffs with the tipoff at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Feb. 8, current families and alumni of the Lou Grant Parent-Child Workshop gathered to celebrate Valentine’s Day early. Stick-on tattoos, pink Play-Doh, art easels, Valentine card making, heart decorating and a group activity of running

yarn around the mulberry tree kept the party lively, but the highlight for most were the home-baked goodies on sale for less than a dollar (even a few got swiped off the table by quick, little hands). Sunshine with lots of glitter, paint and love filled the day.
