Driftwood meets dumpster

The unprecedented debris flows of Jan. 9 have covered area beaches in tangled masses of logs and limbs— making for epic driftwood finds on the one hand, and a hazardous, unattractive shoreline on the other. With the sand berm scheduled to be pulled down later in the spring, the City of Carpinteria has contractors out this week removing the heaviest debris ahead of city crews who will push the remaining material out to the surf zone with the tractors normally used for beach grading. Barring extreme weather events over the coming month-and-a-half that could cause additional debris flows, the city beach should be back to its old self for the sparkling days of spring and summer later in the year.

New storm risk map and evacuation plans unveiled

As winter continues, the threat of another flood and debris flow remains high. Last week, Santa Barbara County released a new, interactive risk map and evacuation plans. The map, which can be found along with other new materials at ReadySBC. org, identifies at least half of Carpinteria in either a high-risk or extreme-high-risk area. Users can enter their address to determine what level of risk they face.

The Thomas Fire burned the hillsides above Carpinteria, damaging the watersheds and dramatically increasing the chance of a debris flow. Experts say that the Jan. 9 storm further damaged watersheds, and it will now take less rainfall to move debris.

Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management Director Rob Lewin said, “Let us not be fooled that the mountains have flushed the debris from the Jan. 9 debris flow. The mountains and the canyons are still loaded with rocks, sediment and other debris.”

New evacuation terminology now in use by the county aims to provide more clarity to residents in the event evacuations are necessary due to an approaching storm.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said, “A strong possibility exists that we will need to call for future evacuations. While evacuations are inconvenient and troublesome, they are also temporary and incredibly important. Most importantly, they can be life-saving.”

The California Highway Patrol announced that two hours before a storm hits, Highway 101 will be closed between Highway 150 and Milpas Street along with offramps in both directions. CHP Captain Cindy Pontes recognizes the inconvenience, but stresses the safety concerns.

Firefighters climb the ladder

Fire and floods postponed a formal ceremony to honor Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District’s recently hired and promoted staff to Feb. 10. Gathering at the Carpinteria station on Walnut Avenue, the district welcomed new firefighters/ paramedics Jacob Joyner and Dean Carey, who had completed a joint academy with Montecito Fire District and were hired by CSFPD on Oct. 16. Mike Hayek and Johan Nilsson were honored for recent promotions. Hayek was hired in 2002 as a firefighter/ paramedic then promoted to fire captain on Dec. 20, 2017. Nilsson was hired in 2008 as a firefighter/paramedic and promoted to engineer on Nov. 15, 2017.

Summerland column takes a break

Coastal View News columnist Fran Davis recently broke her arm and will take a hiatus from her popular and long-running column, “The Summerland Shore.” Davis plans to pick up the pen again in a month or two, when readers will get a full update on the Summerland goings on.

Alcazar to hold auditions for comedy

Readers who are ready for their spotlight should consider scheduling an audition for the Alcazar Theatre’s upcoming production of “Silver Linings in Senior Moments,” an evening of laughter in four one-acts. Walls rise on Habitat project

Habitat for Humanity of Southern Santa Barbara County raised all first floor exterior walls on its latest affordable home building project at 4949 Sawyer Ave. on Feb. 7. Habitat’s Construction Manager Ben Bradley coordinated the team from GordonFiano framing company, also located in Carpinteria, along with volunteers and future homeowners. The wall raising is an important milestone in the construction project, which was begun in early 2017 and will house three families, including eight children.

Habitat plans to have the housing project completed in time for the resident children to attend their new schools in fall of 2018.

“We always dreamed of buying a house and after four kids we were still dreaming.

But soon we will have our Habitat home, a place where we won’t fear being evicted and where our kids can play freely,” says Marisol Lopez, a member of one of the families who will soon call Sawyer Avenue home.

The project, which will include three three-bedroom townhomes, is part of the It All Starts At Home campaign to expand Habitat’s mission to end sub-standard housing in local communities. Another goal of the campaign is to repair five homes through the A Brush with Kindness home repair program in Carpinteria.

Among the many local events postponed by the dual disasters related to the Thomas Fire is the well loved annual Carpinteria Talent Showcase. Noon Rotary Club organizers announced this week that the show has been rescheduled for Saturday, April 21, and that proceeds will be divided between local middle and elementary school music programs and families who were displaced or experienced economic hardship due to the disasters. Is it really an emergency?

Residents fear declaration may speed construction of an unwanted bridge design

By Christian Beamish In the wake of the Arroyo Paredon debris flow on the west end of Carpinteria Valley on Jan. 9, Caltrans determined that the 110-year-old bridge that spans Paredon Creek at Foothill Road must be fast tracked for demolition and replacement. But area residents have numerous concerns. Chief among them is that “emergency permitting” opens the door to a bridge design that is incompatible with its rural surroundings and could expand Foothill Road into a an alternative to Highway 101. Additionally, some residents are concerned about the longterm impacts to sensitive habitat from the un-permitted clearing work that has continued in and around the creek bed since the morning of the disaster.

Although the Arroyo Paredon bridge— referred to as Arroyo Parida by Caltrans and the County of Santa Barbara—remained open for more than a week after the Jan. 9 storm, workers recently installed locked gates on the east and west sides of the bridge, closing the road to through traffic indefinitely.

“Our goal is to re-open all segments of (State Highway) 192 as quickly as we can,” said Jim Shivers, Caltrans Public Information Officer. In addition to the bridge at Arroyo Paredon, Caltrans will demolish and replace three bridges along Highway 192 in Montecito, but Paredon is the only one of the bridges that lies in the Coastal Zone and is therefore subject to additional permitting by the County of Santa Barbara’s Planning Department.

So far, no permits have been issued for work in Arroyo Paredon, according to Glen Russell, Director of Planning and Development for the County of Santa Barbara. “We have received reports of work being done in the creek,” Russell said, “of the creek bed being re-routed and mature vegetation being taken out.” But Russell cautioned that these reports would have to be verified by an investigation before any action could be taken.

Meanwhile, Caltrans contractors continue to work on the creek. On the west bank, boulders are being broken up and hauled away, and dead trees staged for removal. At issue is the extent to which an emergency declaration waives the usual Environmental Impact Report and permitting process for work in the Coastal Zone. “Events have essentially accelerated our response,” Shivers said. “(The work being done) falls under an emergency contract, and contractors can get to work almost immediately … We

The federal government is expected to reimburse Caltrans for emergency work, and at a Feb. 9 meeting of residents in the neighborhood surrounding the bridge, several people suggested that Caltrans may be seeking to lump in the Arroyo Paredon bridge project with the bridges that were more heavily impacted in Montecito in order to fund a new bridge that was needed before the disaster.

In response to concerns about the scope and impact of the new bridge project, Shivers said, “I understand that the community has a deep interest in this particular bridge, and we will do everything we can to ensure the (new) bridge fits the area aesthetically.”

Alcantar receives $5,000 Girls Inc. scholarship

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria member Tahis Alcantar has been awarded a $5,000 college scholarship through the competitive Girls Inc. National Scholar Program. The Carpinteria High School senior joined Girls Inc. in elementary school and credits the staff with inspiring her to reach her goals.

“I am grateful to have won the Girls Inc. National Scholarship, but I could not have done it without the help of my Girls Inc. mentors,” said Alcantar. “They taught me how to be genuine and provided me with tools that will continue to support me in the future.”

Alcantar is currently a member of Girls Inc.’s Eureka!, a five-year college-bound program through which she has traveled to Washington D.C., toured college campuses and held an internship with Dowitcher Designs.

She is the 21st National Scholar from the Carpinteria affiliate. She also founded a new club at CHS, Paws for a Cause, which recently led fundraisers for animals affected by Hurricanes Irma and Harvey.

“We are so proud of the young woman that (Alcantar) has developed into over the years at Girls Inc. of Carpinteria and thrilled to see her receive this well-deserved recognition,” said Executive Director Victoria Juarez. “(Alcantar) is as hardworking, ambitious and driven as they come, and we are excited to see what this next chapter of her life will bring as she prepares for college.”

Although she is still awaiting college acceptance letters, Alcantar plans to attend a four-year university in the fall and study screenwriting and film.

She speaks for the trees

Over the past two years, there has been an unprecedented high number of healthy tree removals throughout Carpinteria. From the elimination of so many of our beautiful Tipuana trees on Linden (which provided shade on warm days), to some of our historic umbrella pines on 6th Street, to the Caltrans project that has stripped our town of so many oaks, Torrey pines, sycamores and eucalyptuses that used to line the freeway and off-ramp areas.

This is a disturbing path we seem to be embarking on here in Carpinteria, where trees, which take decades to grow, are being regarded in a very careless manner. A few days ago, on the beach side of Holly Avenue, one of our little neighborhood’s last, magnificent eucalyptus trees, home to a family of local birds, was removed from one day to the next, leaving a barren landscape and some broken hearts.

There are several key components in comprising what makes a city or town aesthetically beautiful to experience—mature, healthy trees are one of the main factors. Thanks to Wilja Happé (CVN Letters, Feb. 8, 2018) for continuing the community discussion regarding tourism in the City of Carpinteria.

Drawn by the beach, the beautiful environment and the quaint small town, 2.1 million tourists flock here annually and spend about $77 million on hotels, restaurants and our businesses. They also support the city budget with sales taxes.

Tourists are an integral part of Carpinteria’s success as a small beach town. As much as the tourists love the Carpinteria small town vibe, however, so do the people of our community. We have a quality of life that cannot be measured in dollars and cents. Revenue to businesses is only one part of the equation.

As the town becomes more popular and more crowded, we risk losing what we love about Carpinteria. Could too much tourism be bad for Carpinteria? Just look at all of the other Southern California beach towns that used to be small and charming but now are bumper-to-bumper cars and bumper-to-bumper people and hotels everywhere.

We have to maintain a balance between our love of tourist dollars and our love for our town. Where is that balance? How do we know it when we see it? We may not realize we have gone too far until it’s too late, until its one hotel project too many.

In every decision we make we should be mindful of the interrelationship of our environment, our economy and our people. Those are the three elements of the equation that need to be balanced in order to keep Carpinteria Carpinteria.

Don’t cut where it hurts

The Carpinteria Unified School District has released its proposed budget for next school year. On page 23 (Budget Reductions) of this 100-plus page document you can find that the school district is suggesting that all instructional assistants (not special education) should be cut from the middle and high schools, and that all four of our library/media tech (librarian) positions should be cut to 50 percent.

What happened to not cutting staff who work with our children? We should find a way to cut staff that do not have direct, face-to-face, daily contact with our kids. These positions, while not teachers, are just one more adult touchstone that help our students know that they are cared for, that their thoughts are heard, and that their needs are important!

I really hope that the school board reconsiders these hurtful cuts. Let’s keep our schools safe (keep our PE aides). Let’s keep our schools accessible to all (keep our English Language Development aides). Let’s keep our kids reading and having access to computers (keep our librarian/media techs).

So sorry to read the letter bemoaning the horrible inconvenience that the author suffers due to trucks making Sandyland and Linden streets dirty in depositing debris from the tragedy in Montecito (CVN Letters, Feb. 1, 2018). I imagine the author might also be upset by the first responders in her way while they rescue those in danger of death.

seven-week period of renewal and fasting corresponding to Jesus’ 40-day fast (Matt. 4:2). Counting 40 days back from Easter (excluding Sundays, which remain “feast” days), we arrive at Ash Wednesday; this year February 14 (coinciding with Valentine’s Day). An Ash Wednesday worship gathering focuses on at least three things: meditating on our need of a savior, renewing our commitment to daily repentance and remembering that Christ has conquered sin and death.

There was a time when Lent was primarily a season in which new believers prepared for baptism on Easter Sunday; later it became a general season of faith renewal and positive life change (repentance) for Christians. The sign of the cross in ash, usually on the forehead, marks the beginning of a person’s Lenten journey.

Just as we carefully prepare for big events in our lives, such as a wedding or graduation, Lent is a time to prepare our hearts, remembering Christ’s passion and death (Holy Week) and celebrating His resurrection (Easter).

Ashes in biblical tradition also symbolize frailty, sadness, death and mourning, and because of the fire and mudslide, ash has reminded us of similar things.

The good news is that after ashes comes new life (witness the Franklin Trail). We are in a season when the global Christian Church anticipates celebrating the One who brings new life, even eternal life!

During Lent, Carpinteria Community Church will echo ancient tradition and celebrate Communion every Sunday.

Carpinterians, now is a wonderful time for a fresh perspective on life and faith, and to reconnect with the God who loves you at one of the churches in our valley!

Pattern of hysteria

Recently, President Trump proposed having a military parade. Predictably, the left reacted with total hysteria. Never mind that we have had military parades since 1776. Each year we have a National Memorial Parade in Washington D.C. Furthermore, presidents Jefferson, Lincoln, Eisenhower and Kennedy all observed such parades. Tanks, bombers and missiles were displayed in some of these parades.

Why the pattern of hysteria? Because the left won’t accept that Trump won, and as a result they are trying to “abnormalize” and slander him. And their partners in crime are the mainstream media.

Why is this type of psychological bias so dangerous? Because reality is being reinvented, history is being rewritten and a culture of outrage has been built. This is bad for America, and even worse for common sense.

Wake up America. The more the left thinks President Trump is abnormal, the more abnormal they become.

Thomas Disaster: Past, present, future Part two of four

BY ERIN MAKER, CITY OF CARPINTERIA ENVIRONMENTAL COORDINATOR AND BRIAN ROBERSON, CARPINTERIA-SUMMERLAND FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICT Last week’s article focused on work during an emergency situation, and the multifaceted response that happens in large events and includes everyone from those first on scene to the maintenance workers who clear roadways and creeks.

This week we will cover preparing for future events.

Fires used to have a season—the hot, dry late summer and early fall, on the tail end of several months without rain. But as we saw in December, our fire season is now year round. And with late fires, debris flows become a higher risk. On Jan. 9, high intensity rainfall on fire-charred hillsides rapidly transported tons of earth and debris many miles downhill and downstream.

Preparing for events like flooding and mud flows should start as early as possible, when there is time to think about a plan. Future storm events present our community with two challenges. First, for those living in neighborhoods at risk of mud and debris flows, the primary concern should be one of immediate life safety. If you live along a drainage, or at a low point, think about what you would do in the event of a flash flood. Familiarize yourself with the Debris Flow Risk Area Map that was released last week and can be found at sbcready.org, and sign up for the Aware and Prepare alerts.

Keeping an eye on local forecasts is also a good idea.

It’s important to create a household

Planning ahead can save you precious seconds during an emergency, and when a disaster like a debris flow hits every second counts. evacuation plan ahead of time that details where you will go if evacuating together, and where to meet family members if you’re evacuated when you aren’t home.

If you are at work and your child is at school when an evacuation happens, where will you meet? Perhaps the most critical aspect of evacuation planning is deciding when to go.

Even when we have been asked to evacuate, it is in our nature to delay leaving for a variety of reasons, including wanting additional information. If the neighbors aren’t leaving, why should I? Floods and debris flows in particular are fast moving and can’t be outrun. If you are evacuated, leaving early reduces the chance of traffic-clogged roads and being stranded by swollen creeks and flooded

roadways.

A second set of preparedness challenges stem from the impact a significant storm may have on our transportation, communication and energy infrastructure. Given the large footprint of the Thomas Fire burn scar, both Highway 101 northbound and southbound into Carpinteria Valley could become impassible, making it difficult to bring in community supplies such as food to our grocery stores and gas to our service stations.

Local roadways may also be impacted due to overflowing creeks.

How ready are you for a large power outage or isolation? As we saw during both the Thomas Fire and associated debris flows, power outages can shut down your water supply, prevent you from

getting gas, and cause numerous other problems. Having plenty of emergency drinking water, non-perishable foods, flashlights and a battery-powered radio is important. When the power goes out, our televisions and internet-based devices can fail us, so having a radio you can use in a power outage means a fail-safe way to receive information.

If you aren’t the type of person who loves camping, it may not occur to you to have a camping stove. However, if the power is out, gas lines are down and a boil water order is issued, having a stove that you can use independent of your home’s hookups may become critical.

There are a lot of types on the market, and most are very simple to use.

Another thing many of us don’t consider about emergency preparation is the volunteer aspect. During an event there are a lot of spontaneous volunteers, but most response organizations require training and background checks. If helping out is something you are interested in, consider signing up for Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes or contact the local Red Cross chapter or other organization that interests you.

Council keeps parking fee steep, grandfathers two businesses at lower rate

At its Feb. 12 meeting, the Carpinteria City Council helped two businesses exit a parking fee roller coaster they never intended to ride. The in-lieu cost of parking spaces for M3 Multifamily and Arcana Corp. was dropped back to $5,320 after spiking to $24,932 last fall.

The fee applies when a new business or residence cannot supply as many parking spaces as required by the city. Its price per space is based on the projected cost of building future parking to serve downtown merchants.

In 2009, prompted by the Great Recession, the city temporarily reduced the parking fee from $21,657 to $5,319 per space. That reduction was extended until last June. Then in September, an update to fees raised in-lieu parking to $24,932 per space.

M3 Multifamily plans to build a twostory mixed-use development on the corner of Holly and Carpinteria avenues.

Its design fails to include three required parking spaces, the total cost of which rose from $15,957 to $74,796 between June and September. M3 co-owner Jon Martin characterized the hike as a “curveball” that would be “awfully prohibitive.”

Arcana Corp. is in the final stages of permitting for a remodel of the former Sunburst Printing building on the corner of Carpinteria Avenue and Eugenia Way, where Ryan and Ashley Moore plan to open Sunburst Wine Bar. Plans for the site fall short by two parking spaces, which would have cost $49,860 had the council not opted this week to grandfather the original fee of $10,640.

While the council took pity on Arcana and M3, each of the four members in attendance (Al Clark was absent) noted that parking availability continues to drop in

downtown Carpinteria, and a new lot will be necessary soon. While they allowed an exception to be made for the two businesses grandfathered into the reduced rate, council members expressed fear that extending an overall reduction could lead to future projects failing to pay their fair share for parking impacts. Councilman Brad Stein said, “The cost is the cost of developing here in Carpinteria.”

Specifically, councilmembers voiced concern that developers preparing to submit plans for the former Austins Hardware and the rest of the 700 block of Linden Avenue could unfairly take advantage of a reduction.

Arcana and M3 must pay the parking fee within 12 months to secure the lower rate.

Rincon Trail contracts approved

Rincon Trail must clear another $788,000 paperwork hurdle before construction begins. The city council voted on Feb. 12 to hire Dudek for final environmental documentation work and Bengal for engineering the bicycle and pedestrian trail that will connect Rincon County Park with the east end of Carpinteria Avenue.

“All this work needs to be done so we can get a shovel in the ground,” said Parks and Recreation Director Matt Roberts.

Funded by state and federal grants, the $7 million trail project is over 10 years in the making. Its costliest element is a bridge over the railroad tracks. Initial plans to build a switchback on the ocean side of the bridge are now being reconsidered. The switchback would require construction of expensive retaining walls that could be avoided through a more direct route. The tradeoff, Roberts said,

is that the direct route would necessitate more hillside grading and earth-moving for slope stability.

The project’s completion was set to coincide with completion of the LindenCasitas Interchange Project, as a condition

of approval. Roberts anticipates that the trail will be finished as planned in 2020, but since Linden-Casitas is a year ahead of schedule, trail work may wrap up after the Caltrans project.

For public safety reasons, portions of Lookout Park and the beach in the construction area will be temporarily closed to the public as work is performed.

On Feb. 1 at approximately 8:40 a.m. deputies responded to a call from a liquor store on Linden Avenue because a transient man refused to leave. The reporting deputy stated that the man had ignored her but responded to her male partner when he told the man to leave the store. About an hour and a half later, the deputy was dispatched to a brewery near the corner of Carpinteria and Linden avenues, where the same man was lying in the street. The deputy told him to get up and get off the street, and he did not comply for several minutes. When he did move, he laid down again across a handicap access ramp, obstructing the sidewalk. The deputy then arrested the man for delaying or obstructing a peace officer. The man was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Assault

On Feb. 1 at approximately 7 p.m. a deputy responded to a brewery on Linden Avenue on a report of an assault, and encountered a 59-year-old man standing on the sidewalk holding a towel over the right side of his face. The man said he was leaving the brewery on his bike and stated that a 45-year-old man he knew had pushed him off his bike and told him “I’m going to f--- you up. I’m going to put you in your place.” The younger man then punched the older man in the face repeatedly until he fell to the ground and then kicked him several times in the head, according to what the reporting deputy stated the man told him. EMTs responded to the scene and transported the man to a hospital.

The man said that he and the other man had been in a slight altercation at the brewery the week before. He said that the man who assaulted him lived on Palm Avenue, and deputies went to the residence, and a man came out to speak with them. The man admitted to being in a fight, and had an abrasion on his right knuckle that the deputy characterized as a “boxer’s break.” The man said that that the other man had challenged him to a fight. Nevertheless, he was arrested for assault and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Better days ahead?

On Feb. 3 at approximately 10:30 a.m. a deputy made contact with a 31-yearold man in the parking lot of a motel on Via Real. Earlier in the morning, the deputy had run the plates of the car the man was driving and determined that woman who owns the car had a warrant out for her arrest. When asked if he knew the registered owner, the man said that she was staying at the motel with him.

The man said he was on probation and a records check revealed that he also had a warrant out for his arrest. The man was taken into custody, and he told the reporting deputy that there were numerous syringes, paraphernalia and narcotics in the room where he was staying with his girlfriend.

Four other deputies responded to the scene and the reporting deputy went to the room where the man said he and his girlfriend were staying. A 34-year-

old woman answered the door and the deputy placed her under arrest. Deputies collected syringes and a burnt spoon, and the woman told them where additional narcotics were located in the room. The woman and her boyfriend had been staying in area motels in recent weeks, she reportedly said. They were both transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Beam for breakfast

On Feb. 6 at approximately 8:30 a.m. a deputy was dispatched to a laundromat on Linden Avenue on a report of a man passed out inside. Two additional deputies accompanied the reporting deputy, and they found a man lying on the floor of the laundromat, under a table. Deputies roused the man, who had difficulty getting to his feet. A half-empty bottle of Jim Beam whisky was on the floor where the man had been sleeping, and he grabbed the bottle as he got to his feet. The reporting deputy told the man to place the whiskey on a table but had to take the bottle from him as the man failed to follow instructions. The man began to raise his voice and became “non-compliant,” according to the deputy’s report.

The deputy determined that the man was unable to care for his own safety and placed him under arrest, at which point the man began to scream expletives at the deputies and the other people in the vicinity. A deputy brought a patrol car around to the front of the laundromat, and the reporting deputy stated that he had to use force to make the man sit on the ground until the car arrived. The man resisted deputies according to the report and was pushed down on to the trunk of the patrol vehicle, but he “did not complain of any pain,” according the reporting deputy’s statement, “but only continued to be verbally abusive towards myself.” The man was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail and charged with public intoxication and resisting, obstructing and delaying a peace officer.

Too much trouble for a six pack

On Feb. 6 at approximately 3:50 p.m., a deputy was dispatched to a supermarket on Casitas Pass Road on a report of a man stealing a six pack of beer. He was described as wearing black shorts with a blue and grey striped shirt and a baseball cap, and another deputy spotted the man on Carpinteria Avenue and detained him.

The reporting deputy stated that the man denied having been in the supermarket or having stolen anything.

Another deputy spoke with an employee at the supermarket who stated that the man had come into the store, taken a six pack of Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale (valued at $14.32) and walked out. The employee spoke with the man outside the store and retrieved the beer.

The deputy then drove the employee to where the man was detained on Carpinteria Avenue, and the employee confirmed that he was the person who had attempted to steal the beer. The man was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Coding into the future at Aliso School

Stinson wins back-to-back spelling bee titles

Hosted by the Aliso School STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Art or Applied Mathematics) Committee on Feb. 8, students and their parents participated in Family Code Night via the website hourofcode.org. Designed to introduce students to computer science with an hour-long course, hourofcode.org has been utilized by over 200,000 educators worldwide and serves as a gateway to more complex tutorials and education pathways in the field of computer science.

Although Aliso School students have coded before, the STEAM Committee wanted to include families in their first formal computer-coding event, and approximately 70 people turned out. Teacher Mary Sibrian said that it was gratifying for Aliso staff to see students coding with their parents. She added, “we saw a few students teaching their parents a thing or two about coding.” Families worked from a set of directions to access a puzzle titled “The Maze” that involved 20 steps of increasing difficulty in which participants create their own code and run a program. Some students completed “The Maze” and moved on to “The Artist,” which was more difficult, and everyone involved got a good introduction to the world of computer science.

Seventh-grader Conrad Stinson defended his title from last year as Carpinteria Middle School’s Spelling bee champion at the Carpinteria Masonic Lodge on the night of Feb. 8. The Carpinteria Masonic Lodge sponsored the event for the 33rd consecutive year, and CuSD Superintendent Diana rigby, along with parents and school board members, served as judges. Christie Cooney and Kathy Sheaffer helped organize the event with Myron Shann of the Masons. Eighth-grader riley Wrought came in second place and sixth-grader Christian Vences in third. Sixth-grader grace Thompson initially tied with Vences, and after many tie-breakers came in fourth. All four students will move on to the Santa barbara County Spelling bee later in the month.

CHS students restore vintage tractor

The third-graders in Kristy guerrero’s class at Canalino School received a furry visitor from the Animal rescue Foundation when a therapy dog named buttercup came to offer some love and comfort after the fire, debris flow and flooding in December and January. guerrero noted that some families and their children were experiencing high levels of stress after the combined natural disasters.

The Carpinteria High School Tractor Team, with guidance from instructors bradley Miles, Mike Cleary and Wesley Miles, restored Monty parsons’ 1950 8N Ford tractor— completely disassembling the machine to repaint it and replace parts. Having been in the parsons family since 1950, the tractor was restored and returned to Monty, who paid for parts and made a donation to the tractor program in exchange for work that should enable another 68 years of service from the well-loved mechanical ranch hand.

life, love & manners donnie nair Dear readers, thank you for your questions and feedback. Sometimes I combine several questions that all deal with a similar problem. Send your questions to Donnie@coastalviewnews.com. This column is published every third Thursday of the month. Thanks.

Dear Donnie, I have been asked to be a bridesmaid in a friend’s wedding. How do I tell her I can’t afford it? I’m still getting my degree and working part time. The dress, the bachelorette party, the special gifts, etc.

It’s all too much, and I am stressed.

SigneD, FlattereD but broke Dear FlattereD, Wish her happiness and thank her for asking you. Then gently decline the honor by telling her that at this time you simply can’t. Do this as soon as possible so she can ask someone else. Weddings have become extravaganzas, and it does cost a lot of money to participate. Tell her that until you complete your education and start working full time, you have to watch every penny. Offer to help in some other way such as hosting the guest book table.

Dear Donnie, I was suddenly widowed last year, and my friends and family are constantly trying to fix me up. I’m not ready yet. It is not just the grieving, I need time to adjust and discover who I am at this stage of my life. I have been half of a couple for the last 24 years. I always tried to live up to my husband’s expectations and fit in with the corporate world. I’m free of that now and I am actually loving being single. I can be self-centered and other-centered.

I can be my real evolving, imperfect self.

I can meet and embrace new friends, new experiences and I am free to change. Once I know myself then I’ll be ready to date, but not until then. How do I tell others to give me more time and support the changes I’m going through?

Embrace this stage of self-discovery before starting a new relationship. You are a different person now than when you first got married, and you need time to discover what kind of a person you want in your life now. Your friends and family want to be helpful, so tell them you’ll let them know when you’re ready.

Dear Donnie, My husband and I have different ethnic backgrounds. He is dark-skinned, and I am fair. Recently my 8-year-old daughter asked why her skin is a different color than mine. Without getting too complicated, how can I explain this to her?

Dear tongue-tieD, Kids ask lots of questions and it is important that you give age-appropriate answers. Explain that when a man and a woman get married and have children, their children get some combination of the two of them. Some teachers use a world globe to show that countries farther south have darker skin and countries farther north have lighter skin. Show her the country her father’s family came from. People from tropical countries have darker skin as protection from the sun.

People from northern countries such as Ireland and Scandinavia have lighter skin. Most people value a bronzed look and spend a lot of time in the sun getting an attractive tan. Assure her that her skin color is both natural and beautiful.

Dear Donnie, My mother has dementia and lives in another state near my sister. My sister has taken all the responsibility for mother’s care. She chose the facility, and her doctors and her financial manager. I would like to be more involved, but my sister won’t tell me anything. I have no idea how much mother’s care is costing or how much money she has. I really appreciate how devoted my sister is, but how can I get her to share more with me?

SigneD, not in the know Dear not in the know, That is a difficult situation. Your sister is either afraid of being criticized for not spending enough or spending too much.

It is common for one sibling to be the one with the burden of care and feel unappreciated. Try to schedule a visit where you can spend quality time with your sister and check out your mother’s living situation at the same time. Assure your sister that you trust her and would like to go over the finances for your own peace of mind. She owes you full disclosure.

Dear Donnie, My wife is rather shy and feels uncomfortable in social situations. I’m more outgoing and enjoy parties and gatherings where I can mingle with friends and acquaintances. The problem is that she doesn’t want to be left alone to meet other people. How can I get her to be friendlier without hurting her feelings?

SigneD, the Social halF Dear Social halF, I hear this a lot, but it is usually the withdrawn husband married to the “Chatty Cathy.” Partners need party rules so you can agree about what you expect of each other in a social situation. If she really doesn’t like parties, does she have to go? Times have changed and many couples do some things separately and are quite happy about it. Why even go to a party if you have to spend every minute with each other? Let her choose what events she wants to attend, and then if she goes she can be a good guest.

Dear Donnie, My husband retired two years ago, and I’m nearing retirement age. I love my job and love working, but he says we don’t need the money and I should quit.

My husband has always been in charge of money and investments and never tells me anything. He refuses to have a serious discussion about our finances.

We had a very traditional marriage for many years. He was the breadwinner and

I was the homemaker. I was very happy concentrating on our home and our three children. The years flew by, the kids went off on their own, and I went to work. He has always made all the decisions about money, taxes, insurance, etc. That is no longer okay with me. Our daughter is shocked that he is so old fashioned. How can I get him to change?

SigneD, lockeD out oF the vault Dear lockeD out, It’s never too late. Couples should be full partners, especially when it comes to money and your future. You need to know all his passwords to all accounts.

Appeal to his protective nature. If your husband died or became unable to manage, how would you be able to take over?

Ask him where all important papers are.

Look at your tax returns. The days of “ignorance is bliss” are over. If you two are financially secure now and in the future, that’s great. Give him the credit.

If there are problems, he needs to let you know. There is no honor in secrecy. You two need to talk about what you want out of the rest of your lives together. Your problem has more to do about control than just money.

Dear Donnie, My son is in the Army overseas and has fallen in love with a woman from a

different culture. They plan to marry and move back to the states. I think she will have a hard time adjusting. She speaks very little English, and she will also be far away from her close-knit family. I’m afraid he is lonely and will regret this decision. How can I convince him to wait at least a while?

SigneD, worlDS colliDing Dear worlDS colliDing, Waiting is always a good idea, but ask him if he wants your opinion before offering it. Since he is away from home and romantically involved with this woman, he probably will not listen to anything you say. Tell him you are concerned that she may have a very unrealistic idea of what her life will be like here. Marriage can be hard sometimes, and I agree with the old saying, “Opposites attract, but ‘sames’ last.” Young people think that love conquers all, but the more two people have in common the better their chances are for happiness. Assure your son of your love and trust him to make the right decision.

Natural History Notes

The beach closure provides sanctuary for a number of species. In addition to the seals, numerous birds come ashore to rest, and it is suspected the intertidal life may be richer because of the closure.

The Cate School boys basketball team walked off the court on Feb. 7 with a 6132 win over Villanova and a spot in the CIF playoffs. The win resolved a threeway gridlock with Fillmore and Thacher for second place in the Frontier League.

to suppress Villanova’s top scorer. The shift, “really kind of changed the whole game,” said Cate coach Andy Gil. With three Rams—Andy McHarg, Reid McCaw and John Shelburne—shadowing Nguyen at various times throughout the game, the Wildcats never got their offense back on track. They managed to keep pace with Cate in the second quarter, trailing by 25-17 with about a minute-and-a-half left to play, but then Ram sophomore Khadim Pouye pulled down a rebound at the defensive end, dribbled through Wildcats defenders and drove the length of the court, laying the ball before the buzzer sounded to extend the lead to 10.

Cate poured it on in the second half and when McHarg followed in a missed shot, the Rams had a 20-point lead. “Going into the half we led 27-17 and talked about trying to create more fast-break opportunities; and we did just that,” said Gil. Junior Ethan Cassulo added a pair of free throws to end the quarter, and the home team led 45-23 going into the fourth. Gil said he was “very proud of our defense tonight, forcing Villanova to play faster than they would have liked.”

Cate continued to put the pedal to the metal in the final quarter, and when Pliso knocked down another three-pointer with around five minutes to play in the

game, the Rams had doubled up on Villanova with a 54-27 lead. Pliso led all scorers with 26, while Pouye registered 14. “We are excited about the opportunity for playoffs and looking to make a run like we did last year, going to the quarterfinals in Division Six. This year we are Division Five-AA,” said Gil. Last season, the Rams made a valiant effort, winning two games in the tournament before falling to Pacifica Christian of Orange County and sharp-shooting Dominick Harris who tallied 43 that night. This time Cate will have experience on their side with five seniors and four juniors heading into the journey.

The athletes that ruled Warrior territory in yesteryear came back to the gymnasium on Feb. 9 to take on the current crop of ballers. And, lo and behold, the old outscored the new in both the girls and boys alumni games.

Regardless of the scoreboard, the evening offered laughter and good times on both ends of the court.

Girls water polo

February 7 – The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team wrapped up the 2017-18 season with an away game at the “Shark Tank” against Tri-Valley League Champion Malibu, where the Warriors fell by a score of 20-5. “For much of the first quarter, the game remained scoreless, thanks to exceptional play from freshman goalie Kate Gay, before a relentless Shark counter attack finally cracked open the contest,” said Warrior coach Lance Hoffman. Sophomore Sadie Mead, freshman Cassidy Hajducko and junior Jessica Cruz accounted for the Carpinteria offense with three goals for Mead and one apiece for Hajducko and Cruz. “This contest marked the final contest for the Warrior seniors, though the young core of the team promises a bright and competitive future for Carpinteria,” concluded Hoffman.

February 7 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team needing a win to keep their playoffs alive, delivered by beating Thacher 4-2. The Warriors were aided by an early penalty kick after Alejandra Alvarez was fouled in the box. Aly Springer converted the kick for a 1-0 lead. Zahea Hamadi gave Carpinteria a two-goal lead as she finished off a Yaneli Silva pass. A Toad free kick eluded Warrior keeper Laura Valdez and left Carpinteria going into halftime up, 2-1. Hamadi then struck again with a solo run on the right flank, angling in and placing the ball into the corner of the net. Aisha Duarte fed Cydney Smolnikar who knocked it past Thacher’s sprawling keeper with about eight minutes to go for the final goal, putting the Warriors at 6-7-4 overall and 5-3-4 in the Frontier League.

February 13 – Girls soccer made it through the wild card round of CIF playoffs with a 1-0 win over Alverno Heights Academy thanks to an Aisha Duarte goal about midway through the second half. The first half, reported coach Charles Bryant, was a battle with the Jaguars and with the wind. “We had trouble controlling the ball and didn’t see many great looks but we were getting better as the half wore on. In the second half, we were in their end a good chunk of the forty minutes but lacked the final touch.” Duarte drilled a shot from about 20 yards out and from a tough angle.

“It was beautifully placed into the top corner,” Bryant said. He commended Alejandra Garcia and Emmelly Santillan for their strong play on defense, along with Aly Springer in the midfield. Now 7-7-4 overall, the Warriors will play at Montebello on Thursday, Feb. 15 in a First Round matchup against the 18-3-2 Oilers.

February 6 – The Cate School girls basketball team got a 59 to 19 win against Villanova last week. “Elle Smith had another amazing game, she worked so well with Maya Blattberg and her guards; she ran the floor for rebounds and fast breaks; she played smart defense, and she scored 19 points,” said Ram coach Amy Venditta. Blattberg also finished the game with nine points. Jasmine Ross scored 11; Sarah Polowczak knocked down 10, and Lily Zanze tallied six. Deborah Brittain pitched in four. “Bella Lucente and Dana Huston-Chen played tough defense and rebounded well in the post … Laura Vences and Lily Zanze played incredible defense against Villanova’s best players,” said Venditta.

February 8 – The Cate School girls basketball team beat Malibu, 49-30 at Malibu. Elle Smith finished with a season high of 22 points. Sarah Polowczak finished with eight points, and Lily Zanze ended up with eight, as well. Maya Blattberg registered four, and Piper Brooks and Laura Vences pitched in two apiece. “Maisie’s (Oswald) defense, rebounding and passing game were essential to the Rams’ win,” said Ram coach Amy Venditta. “Bella Lucente, Dana Huston-Chen, and Deborah Brittain (who scored one point), all played well in the post.”

February 9 – The Cate School girls basketball lost to Fillmore, 39-32. Maya Blattberg ended up with eight points, as did Elle Smith, while Piper Brooks and Sarah Polowczak each had six. Lily Zanze chipped in four. “Maisie Oswald, Jasmine Ross and Laura Vences each worked hard, and sprinted up and down the court, stopping the ball and playing great defense,” said Ram coach Amy Venditta. After trailing the Flashes 13 to 4 by the end of the first quarter, Cate outscored the visitors, 14 to 2 in the second. “The Rams played aggressive defense and got at least eight steals that turned into fast breaks,” added Venditta.

February 7 - The Cate School boys soccer team closed out its season with a 5-0 loss to Tri-Valley Athletic Association (TVAA) League Champion Santa Paula on Cate Mesa last week. “Obviously, this is a tough way to finish the season, especially for our seniors—Captain Ben Jessup, Charlie Morris and Gavin Fansler—they all played hard and well today, and it would have been nice to send them off on a higher note,” said Ram coach Pete Mack. Cate kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard until the 33rd minute when they struck from long range. Up 1-0 at halftime, Santa Paula managed four more goals in the second half. “We took huge strides this year as individuals and as a team, and the fact that we graduate only three players is a good indication of what lies ahead for us,” added Mack.

February 7 – The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team lost 62-49 at Nordhoff. The Warriors were led offensively by Noah Nuño with 24 and Dom Sturdivan with 9. The Warriors were in a must-win situation to get a CIF playoff opportunity.

“I did not do my job well enough in preparing our kids for this kind of situation,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales. The Warriors finish with an overall record of 4-9 and Tri-Valley League record of 4-8.

Thomas reflections resurrect Romero Fire

Carpinteria’s fall and winter of 2017/2018 have played out similarly to the fall and winter of 1971/1972. The October, 1971 Romero Fire burned much of the same terrain around Carpinteria Valley as last December’s Thomas Fire. And on the heels of both fires came significant flooding—though 1972 spared Montecito from anything

similar to this year’s devastation.

This week John Wullbrandt shares with readers a copy of the Carpinteria Herald from Oct. 14, 1971. Wullbrandt lost most of his historic treasures in the Thomas Fire, but the newspaper pictured below escaped the flames. Observant readers will notice that that main fire photo was printed upside-down—an easier mistake to make in the days when newspapers were laid out by hand.

In a dry suit, life jacket and spray skirt, Throgmorton readied herself to launch for an exploration by sea kayak around the Antarctic Peninsula. “Peace, quiet, pristine air and stunning scenery—it was a life-changing experience, made even more poignant by having witnessed the extreme contrast in Mother Nature’s power,” Throgmorton wrote. “From fire to ice! I can still picture the beauty of the White Continent if I close my eyes. I don’t really have words to express it. And I love it that our beautiful earth can deliver awe and beauty that is truly beyond our small human words.”
