Cannabis Compliance Team raids another Carpinteria greenhouse

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Cannabis Compliance Team (CCT) served a search warrant late Monday afternoon, Feb. 11, in the City of Carpinteria off Foothill Road as part of an investigation into an alleged unlicensed marijuana cultivation facility. The team determined there was a combination of legal and illegal grow activity on the site. Several pounds of cannabis were seized and surrendered by the operators in an effort to cooperate with law enforcement. The Sheriff’s Department did not disclose the address of the raid as the investigation is on-going.

Registration now open for artists studio tour

The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center is once again organizing an artists’ studio tour to promote the local arts community. Last year, over 30 artists opened their doors to visitors who savored a glimpse behind the scenes where the creative process unfolds. This year, tour organizers anticipate a wide-variety of participating artists.

The event is scheduled for Mother’s Day weekend, May 11 and 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A group show of participating artists will be on exhibit at the Arts Center gallery from May 3 to 13. UCSB Koegel Autism Center is now recruiting young adults for social-skills clubs

The UCSB Koegel Autism Center is recruiting young adults (ages 18-25) with autism spectrum disorder for two peer-facilitated socialization clubs as part of two separate research studies. One club will focus on adults who are already capable of engaging in social conversation and the other club is for adults with emerging conversational skills/more limited language use.

Participants will receive either 10 or 20 weeks of a no-cost, multi-component social club as part of a research study. These clubs provide a motivating environment to acquire social experience and targeted lessons to improve social skills and understanding. The programs feature peer-facilitators, self-tracking of key skills, fun activities, social outings and weekly interactive lessons. Girls Inc. welcomes new executive director

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria has announced that Elaine K. Mah Best will be the organization’s new executive director. She will begin serving in her new role on Feb. 11.

Best brings 14 years of executive leadership experience and nearly two decades of development experience, including donor cultivation, major and capital gift campaigns, strategic planning and special events. Most recently, she served as vice president of institutional advancement for the Santa Barbara Zoo, where she led the effort to raise more than $27 million in donations in support of the Zoo’s operations and priority projects since joining in 2009.

“Elaine (Best) is an experienced leader with a strong commitment to enabling success for local youth and a lifelong passion of empowering girls,” said Girls Inc. of Carpinteria Board President Theresa Huerta. “We are fortunate to welcome her as our new executive director following an extensive search. Our Board of Directors is confident that under Elaine’s leadership, the work of our staff, community partners and supporters will strengthen our impact and ability to inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold.”

Best succeeds Victoria Juarez, who dedicated nearly eight years of service to Girls Inc. and recently joined the Scholarship Foundation of Santa Barbara as CEO. Since then, Lisa Murphy Rivas, a nonprofit management, public outreach and government relations professional, has served as interim executive director throughout the transition, helping the organization continue its valuable work serving girls in the community.

Moratorium on scooters approved, Rincon Trail expansion gets additional funds

By Claire Burke In a unanimous vote, the City Council voted 5-0 to approve a temporary moratorium on the conduct of shared mobility devices such as scooters. The approval of a temporary moratorium allows the City to investigate regulations for these devices and their potential impact on the city before they are available or allowed within the city limits.

This vote follows suit with what many neighboring communities have passed in recent months including Santa Barbara, Goleta, Buellton and the University of California, Santa Barbara.

City staff noted that while a benefit of these devices would be an additional transportation option, there are many safety concerns, such as riders who do not wear helmets and those who are unfamiliar with scooter operation. Additionally, it is projected that many of those who would utilize these devices would be visitors, unfamiliar with the City of Carpinteria and its local rules and regulations. This moratorium only affects shared mobility devices and will not affect personal devices.

Although the Council discussion was brief, safety was the key issue on council members minds with Councilman Gregg Carty commenting, “This very well may be a way of transportation in the future, but I have concerns about some serious safety issues, so I would be in favor the moratorium.” Councilman Roy Lee agreed, stating that, “public safety is an issue.”

While no scooter company in particular has reached out to the City to inquire about permits or permission, the City wanted to set up the moratorium in order to have regulations in place should a shared mobility business seek out Carpinteria for operations.

At the Council meeting, Carpinteria resident Scott Ellinwood was commended for his excellence in service to the City.

Ellinwood was honored as a member of the Architectural Review Board from 1972–2018 and for his over twenty years of service to the community.

rincon Trail project secures extra funding

In a 5-0 vote, the Council approved an amendment to the Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Carpinteria and the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments (SBCAG) to allow for an extra $250,000 of unbudgeted funds. These additional funds will not come from the City, but rather from SBCAG and Caltrans, and will cover the environmental re-evaluation, engineering work and earthwork necessary for the alternative trail path option chosen by the City and SBCAG.

Adding insult to injury

I am not the only neighbor living at the corner of Ash and Sandyland (the dump zone) angered by your article/report of Feb. 7 (“City places shoreline-compatible sediment on the beach at Ash Avenue,” Vol. 25, No. 21). The road mess, six to eight trucks together beeping while they trash our beach for months, is a terrible contribution. Do you really expect us to believe that this is advantageous to the shoreline? I would welcome the full view of this study, including community impact v. any beach advantage. I understood the urgency during tragic times, we all were overwhelmed with sorrow and understanding of all options. I won’t go into details or timeframes involved with this “practice” of beach dumping, but we’d like to know if this is going to be the new norm to expect. In closing, I’ll say, shame on you for selling this terrible routine as beneficial. We are not fools waiting to be fed a view from up on the mountain, we love our beach and community as is.

Have you been dealing with the Cword for some time now and been so incredibly frustrated that it just won’t go away?

Have you been breathing it, drinking it, stomaching it, smelling it, suffering and suffocating from it?

It is sickening to think of how this thing has taken over, and some people just continue to live their lives and complain about these other things that seem so petty when this C-word has taken so many in our community.

It’s just not right.

I am a caretaker of a current cancer patient who is incredibly close to me. If I need to give this person the other Cword, cannabis, I will. I support each and every legal Carpinteria, Santa Barbara County, California and other U.S. growers far and wide for growing what is assisting so many of those who live right here in Carpinteria, those who live with cancer.

That C-word has taken lives from me and my family. Had we had a bit more time with my father, we may have been able to give him some relief from his pain and or prolonged his life in his last 26 days from “diagnosis to death” from metastatic melanoma cancer.

To all cannabis complainers: Try cancer. Then let’s talk about your discomfort.

Ways for families affected by Alzheimer’s to reconnect on Valentine’s Day

Carpinteria’s third generation greenhouse growers have disrespected their elders and joined with the pharmaceutical industry to provide another drug for sick people; all for the love of money. And as usual, too many doctors will prescribe cannabis rather than help their patients learn the cause of their symptoms and suggest a natural remedy to heal the cause—then the symptoms could cease without drugs and their dreadful side effects. I have been doing this (online by myself) for years, and do not remember when I last visited a doctor. At the age of 90, I have no illness or disease but have lots of energy.

Natural remedies usually involve eating fresh whole foods which is a powerful way to prevent and to cure illness. Your food should be your medicine!

I support commercial cannabis in the Carpinteria Valley, and I also support the enforcement of odor abatement, along with all rules and regulations. Let’s not allow the Chicken Little approach of a small group screaming about crime waves, falling property values and depravity interfere with good judgement. This is the wonderful place it is thanks to careful deliberation and a big-picture approach in governance. Let’s give cannabis the same consideration.

Sea level rise

Have you been to the local Sea Level Rise (SLR) meetings? You should. This is the bottom line I gleaned from them: Sea level rise adaptation policies eventually result in “managed retreat” due to “repetitive loss” (their terminology)—as a sand berm can be replaced only so many times, a home can be repaired only so many times, etc., they said.

Buildings and people will be removed from the coastline by orders from the Coastal Commission and/or FEMA. No monetary compensation will be given for your losses. Don’t believe me? “Love and care are important to all of us,” said Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) president and CEO. “When Alzheimer’s disease enters someone’s life, it can change many things, including their relationships. Being adaptable and open to change can help families affected by Alzheimer ’s disease find alternative ways to express love, show support and connect with one another on Valentine’s Day and throughout the year.”

Find ways to reconnect. While you may not be able to do everything you did with your loved one before, there are ways to maintain, restore or recreate intimacy, love and connection. Eating together, watching a movie, looking at old photos or just taking a walk, are all ways to help stay connected. Nonverbal cues, such as gentle touching, smiles and eye contact are all ways to “stay connected” with someone who may no longer be able to verbalize their emotions as they had before.

Know the person’s “love languages.”

Love languages describe various ways people give and receive love. These include physical touch, words of affirmation, quality time, gifts, and acts of service. Knowing the person’s love language helps the caregiver act in ways that help the person feel supported and loved based on their unique preferences.

Be adaptable. Things you may have done frequently with your loved one before Alzheimer’s disease may now be difficult or impossible. Focus on what the person can do now, rather than dwelling on what they cannot, and be willing to adapt your relationship to the “new normal.” For example, if traveling is something you enjoyed together before but can no longer do, consider bringing a destination to them. For example, instead of going to Italy, have an Italian-themed night with Italian food, music, pictures and/or movies.

Redefine the roles. Relationship roles change as Alzheimer’s disease progresses and the person living with it becomes more and more dependent on others for help. The stress and added responsibili-

Be open to change. Don’t hesitate to ask for or accept offers of help and support from outside sources such as relatives, friends, a local church or professional care agency.

Express your emotions, even the negative ones. Being an Alzheimer ’s caregiver, together with watching the disease change someone you love and your relationship with that person, can be stressful and overwhelming. Sadness, frustration, anger and even resentment are all emotions one can experience. Having constructive outlets to deal with those feelings is important. Support groups can offer caregivers a non-judgmental place to freely share their feelings, especially those they may not feel comfortable discussing with a relative or friend. AFA offers telephone-based support groups and can also provide referrals to in-person support groups across the country, through its National Toll-Free Helpline. AFA’s social workers are also available through the helpline to provide one-on-one counseling and support. They can be reached at (866) 232-8484, seven days a week.

Now, of course this feeling is totally problematic. After all, that Cleo is desperately needed can hardly excuse her subjugation. It doesn’t somehow make it right, or even OK. But “Roma” is not about telling you how it is, morally speaking. This is not a sermon or stump speech. It is a look at the life and spirit, the ups and bitter downs, of a woman who the world overlooks.

It does not depict the triumph of an ordinary life. Instead it shows its depth.

Cleo’s life isn’t glamorous. It is hard and often boring and sometimes fun but never buoyed by sustained pleasure. Yet it is not meaningless. Far from it.

“Roma” is a beautiful film. It is careful and measured. It does not grasp beyond its reach or stumble into the traps of political or social bloviation. It is transcendently modest—in its acting, directing, cinematography and so on.

It cherishes everyday life without exaggerating or even particularly exalting it.

It finds meaning in simple things—not just pleasures, but pains also. This is the stuff of life.

“Roma” is rated R for graphic nudity, some disturbing images and language.

M AT T D U N C A N Cleodegaria “Cleo” Gutierrez’ (Yalitza Aparicio) life is, in many ways, not her own. She’s a live-in-maid for a middleclass family in Mexico City in the early 1970s. Almost everything she does—every decision she makes—she does with an eye toward her employers’ needs.

Take the kids, for example. Cleo is basically a second mother (or more like the first mother) to the four kids in the family she works for—certainly she does more of the thankless, nitty-gritty work than Sra. Sofia (Marina de Tavira), the family’s matriarch. Furthermore, when Cleo learns that she has become a mother-tobe, among the first things she considers is whether she can keep her job, how the family will react, etc.

This isn’t the only part of Cleo’s life that is wrong-way-round. She typically only gets off work after everyone else is in bed, so her social life is constrained, to put it mildly. And even the dynamics of the family she serves—strife and all—affect, beset and toss Cleo about as if it was her family, her world, her life.

One could imagine this setup playing out in various different ways. For example, one could call to mind Alice from “The Brady Bunch”—an ever-present part of the family who is represented as being happy and well-adjusted.

On the other hand, it’s easy to take a bleaker perspective on Cleo’s plight.

After all, she’s a paid actor in another’s drama. She does what others want her to do, and she does it how they want her to do it. Again, in this way, her life is not her own. Which sounds bleak.

However, in “Roma,” Cleo isn’t portrayed along either extreme. The picture is more complex and nuanced. On the one hand, Cleo’s predicament seems problematic, unfortunate, and borne of a clearly immoral system. But, on the other hand, it’s hard to escape the feeling that her life is deeply good—sad, but beautiful. When Cleo, who should have never been in this situation—this life, this exploitation, this hardship, this

Trino Richard Perez, 88, passed away on Feb. 5, 2019 in Santa Barbara, California. Trino was born in Santa Barbara to Ricardo and Maria Perez. He had two sisters, Margaret Gomez and Amelia Melendez. He worked for General Telephone Company for over 30 years doing various jobs. He was in the Air Force and played basketball for the Air Force Police Squadron for four years. He played basketball at City College and entered into a preliminary game against UCLA. One of his proudest moments was when John Wooden asked him if he wanted to play for UCLA. “I like your fade away jump shot,” Wooden said. He married his City College sweetheart, Ida Hernandez.

They were married 62 years and had four sons, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

More rain was apparently fine for the harbor seals as we saw a season high count. This year, volunteers are stationing themselves at low tides on the beach as well as at the overlook. Come visit at the overlook and learn about the seals.

Harbor seals are loyal to particular locations for giving birth.

There are only four—possibly five—mainland rookeries from the Mexican border through Point Conception. The rookeries are located at La Jolla, Point Mugu (Naval Base), Carpinteria and Point Conception. There was, and may still be, a rookery at Elwood but human disturbances have reportedly led to near abandonment. If anyone has recent information on the Elwood rookery, Sealwatch is interested.

Happy Valentine’s Day! I checked Wikipedia and confirmed the holiday was absolutely, positively not started by Hallmark cards. But even if it were, I vote to embrace it and spread the love far and wide in little ways. Yes, the love day can feel a little heavy for some. Depending on the time of my life, I have missed a special someone and dreaded not meeting a beloved’s expectations. Healthful practice is to notice those feelings and then to choose whether to do something about them. But the invitation is there to set that aside and reach out to loved ones and neighbors with an open heart or maybe even a big red paper one.

For those of us who have a hard time sharing feelings, maybe Valentine’s offers a chance to reflect the warm fuzzies you feel. It’s an excuse to more openly wear your heart on your sleeve. It’s a day to show you care with a card or flowers or by giving a chocolate kiss to people in your life that you don’t normally find it easy to express your care for. It’s a great day to be intentional about how we interact with people, a great day to make eye contact and smile at the cashier behind the counter, or give your child a high five for completing her 30 minutes-a-day of reading.

Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to heal, affirm, strengthen and just plain enjoy your relationships. Reminisce with someone you have shared fun or meaningful experiences with. “I was just thinking of the time when we… and thought I’d give you a call.” Reliving shared experiences brings back the good feelings and builds the bonds of human connection.

Here are some of my red-heart wishes: Happy Valentine’s Day to all of those who work to make the lives of children more healthy and complete. Teachers, everyone who works in schools and social services, you are so important! Happy Valentine’s Day to moms and dads, aunts, uncles and grandparents, may you get the breaks and naps you need after so intentionally talking and teaching with your energetic kiddos. Happy Valentine’s Day to trained mentors and other villagers who help raise our children and create the web of support that can catch them if they start to fall. Your work is hard and sometimes gut-wrenching, and you keep coming back with open hearts to share more of

A consortium of school districts in Santa Barbara County will host educator recruitment fairs from 9 a.m. to noon on Feb. 23 at the Santa Barbara County Education Office Auditorium, and from 9 a.m. to noon on March 2 at the Santa Maria-Bonita School District Souza Center. Engineering program to start at CHS

By CHriStian BeamiSH Starting next school year, Carpinteria High School will launch a new Career Technical Education program in engineering, utilizing curriculum materials from the Paxton and Patterson Company.

The first year of the program will serve as an introduction to the field of engineering, with seven “modules” focusing on different aspects of the profession, including: Alternative Energy, Architectural Design, Construction Technology, Environmental Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Materials Science and Robotics and Automation Principal Gerardo Cornejo said, “based on the needs in this area, the need for manufacturing is going to increase.”

Emphasizing that the jobs students will be preparing for in the CTE engineering program are not entry level, Cornejo pointed out that engineering is a career track that would provide CHS graduates with salaries that would enable them to meet the high cost of living in Santa Barbara County.

The Career-Tech engineering program, however, is not designed to steer students away from pursuing a four-year degree.

Partnering with Allan Hancock College, Ventura County Community College and University of California, Santa Barbara, advanced CTE engineering students will be able to utilize dual enrollment at those institutions while earning an Engineering Certificate on their diploma upon graduation from CHS. The certificate will demonstrate students’ mastery of particular skill sets and have them prepared to join the work-force straight out of high school, or continue with university studies. “Students can explore and experience areas of

Commercial real estate market strengthens

“In terms of transaction volume, the year began with a whimper and finished with a roar,” according to the Hayes Commercial Group which released this month the fourth quarter report and year-end review on the south coast commercial real estate market.

In terms of retail leasing, county-wide vacancies dipped, that is everywhere except on State Street in Santa Barbara’s downtown district. Carpinteria saw an increase in gross absorption in 2018, more than doubling the square footage leased the prior year. In a notable fourth quarter deal, Agilent Technologies leased 10,395 square feet at 6398 Cindy Lane to accommodate its expansion. Heading into 2019, there are just a handful of spaces for lease, comprising a lean vacancy rate of 1.8 percent.

Looking ahead, the report indicates that retail leasing momentum will remain strong in Goleta and Santa Barbara in 2019, while Carpinteria’s leasing activity will likely taper due to the lack of inven-

tory. Whether the increase in purchases by owner-users will significantly decrease leasing demand remains to be seen.

Vacancies rose throughout Santa Barbara County in the industrial leasing sector. Carpinteria’s transactions were dominated by renewals, which represented nearly 90 percent of the square footage leased. The remaining signings were all for smaller spaces, less than 3,000 square feet. Achieved lease rates pivoted upward in 2018, landing 29 percent higher than the prior five-year average. Presently, there are only two industrial spaces available for lease, both large: 24,030 square feet in the Astro Aerospace building at 6384 Via Real and 20,000 square feet in the TE Connectivity (Tyco) building at 550 linden Ave. The highest-priced commercial sale of 2018 in Carpinteria is the mixed-use space at 2580 lillie Ave. which sold at $5.4 million for 36,154 square feet of land and 8,000 square feet of building.

County-wide, the highest sale was in Santa Barbara, where the Hyatt Centric Hotel located at 1111 East Cabrillo Blvd. sold for $87.5 million.

businesses. Currently, the City is working with other local jurisdictions on a longterm strategic energy road.

Because of the location of Carpinteria in relation to the energy grid, we are more vulnerable to power outages than other communities. We felt that effect during the Thomas Fire and debris flows; addressing that concern has been a focus of local government agencies and non-profit groups for a while. We have been exploring things such as community choice energy and renewable energy projects that include battery storage in an effort to address those concerns in a way that best serves the local community; the strategic energy roadmap is a complimentary effort to those. Understanding not only what types of projects will best serve the Carpinteria area, but also where to locate them and having a plan for installing them is a critical step in the continued efforts towards helping the community in the long term.

Even things you do at home, such as turning the lights off when you leave the room and buying local instead of shipping things over long distances, reduces our overall energy consumption. These may seem like small things. But the saying ‘”think global, act local” is true for everything. And here in Carpinteria, all you have to do is look at our beautiful beach town to see that people live that every day.

The year 2019 is the year of the pig in the Chinese zodiac and corresponds with the element of earth in the system, making this year the year of the Earth Pig. “Earth Pigs” are said to be social butterflies with friends from all walks of life. Success can come later in life for some Earth Pigs, and romance is an area of life they may need to work on. Warriors and Rams earn a faceoff

Friday, Feb. 8, was a big day of local boys high school hoops, as the two teams in town hosted CIF-SS Division Five-A playoff games. After both squads got off to slow starts, both ended up advancing to the second round with Cate beating St. Michael’s 70-58, and the Warriors trouncing New Covenant, 72 to 24. On Tuesday, Feb. 12, the Warriors traveled to North Torrance High to take on Vistamar of El Segundo and once again prevailed with a 72-54 win. They’ll play Cate, who also advanced to the quarterfinals with a 61-52 victory over San Jacinto Valley Academy.

First up at Sprague Gym, the Rams were waiting on visiting St. Michael’s from Orange County to arrive and the game started 20 minutes late. Tardiness didn’t deter the Archangels from getting the early jump on Cate, as Steven Nguyen knocked down three threepointers to put his team up 12-7. Cate captain Khadim Pouye countered with some strong inside play and seven points to get the Rams within two at 14-12 by the end of opening quarter.

At the beginning of the second quarter, Cate picked up some easy buckets from Mason Oetgen, Tega Umukoro and Pouye as their defensive pressure turned the deficit into a 24-16 lead. However, the inside play of Brandon Oborny and clever ball handling of Steven Nguyen helped the Archangels tie the game at 26.

The Rams continued to pound the ball inside to secure a 29-28 lead at the half.

Meanwhile, down the road at Warriors Gym, Carpinteria trailed New Covenant Academy a little over four minutes into the game, 12-7. “We were slow in our ball movement offensively, and New Covenant knocked down three three-pointers and made all three of their free throws on a fouled three-point attempt…” explained Warriors’ coach Corey Adam.

But Carpinteria’s full-court press began to smother the smaller Huskies. A trey

The second quarter was all Carpinteria, as Dylan O’Neill knocked down 19 second-quarter points, including a perfect 10 of 10 from the free throw line.

The Warriors then blew the game open, leading 45-17 at halftime. O’Neill led all scorers with 26 for the night.

Back up at Cate Mesa, the Rams were putting the finishing touches on their win. “A well-balanced day and a fullcourt press allowed Cate to open up the lead and hold on,” said Rams coach Andy Gil as his team took a 52-41 lead after three quarters. Ethan Ng had 26 to lead all scorers, while the Archangels’ Steven Nguyen tallied 24. Cate improves to 12-4 overall.

Down the road, Carpinteria started out slow in the third, but Nuño gave his team a jumpstart with 13 points in the quarter and made 22 for the game.

Nakasone finished with eight, and Chris Ramirez compiled six rebounds, six assists and six steals to go along with his

two points. “It was a great all-around team win, everybody on the roster contributed positive plays,” said Adam.

The two schools will meet again on Thursday, Feb. 14, as the Rams won the first contest by a score of 40-37. Although

the game was originally to be played up at Cate Mesa, details of the time and site have yet to be worked out, according to Carpinteria Athletic Director Pat Cooney.

A trip to the CIF-SS Division Five-A semifinals is at stake in the game.

short stops CHS girls water polo’s Kate Gay named SBART’s Athlete of the Week

Kate Gay of the Carpinteria High School girls water polo team and Dos Pueblos wrestler Kade Uyesaka were named the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Athletes of the Week. The winners were announced on Monday, Feb. 11, at the SBART’s annual Women and Girls in Sports Luncheon at Warren Hall at the Earl Warren Showgrounds. Gay, a sophomore goalie, led Carpinteria to its first-ever CIF-SS semifinal appearance in girls water polo by making 20 saves in a 9-7 quarterfinal win at Chadwick in Palos Verdes on Saturday, Feb. 9.

Way of the Orient wrestlers prevail in tournament

Wrestlers from Way of The Orient Martial Arts Academy in Carpinteria travelled to Pacifica High School on Jan. 20 to participate in a USA Wrestling Tournament under the CAGWA (California Age Group Wrestling Association) in Folkstyle Wrestling.

Nine-year-old Jared Escamilla took first-place with three wins, zero losses. Twelveyear-old Brianna Escamilla also earned three wins-zero losses, as did ten-year-old Connor Boyd. Thirteen-year-old Christopher Ceja had two wins and one loss. Overall, the team’s record was 12 wins and 1 loss in an outstanding performance. Wrestlers at Way of The Orient train three- to four-times a week, working on stretching, wrestling drills for strength and speed and cardio exercises for endurance. Athletes have to be well rounded to excel in a tough sport like wrestling, and head coach Jesse Ruiz notes that he is proud of his young wrestlers. “We hope to inspire young kids to believe in themselves,” Ruiz said. “With hard work, all things are possible.”

Girls water polo

February 6 – The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team took on Pioneer Valley as their first opponent in the CIF playoffs, swimming away with an 11-8 win at the Carpinteria Community pool. Warrior sophmore Cassidy Hajducko had three goals to her name. “Freshman Piper Clayton also played phenomenally; Piper did not score any goals herself, but her two-meter work set up multiple passes, plays, and pressure that was necessary for the Warriors to win,” said Carpinteria coach Sergio Castaneda. Sadie Mead contributed goals as well, and repeatedly stole the ball from the Titans. “The game was intense from the first sprint, and this energy did not change throughout the game,” explained Castaneda. The Warriors are now 11-5 overall, finishing 7-1 in the Citrus Coast League, and are 1-0 in the 2018-19 CIF playoffs, advancing to the second round.

February 12 – The Cate School Rams took the four hour bus ride to San Jacinto Valley Academy to face the Wolves in their second round matchup Tuesday, coming away with a 61-52 win. As has been the case for most of the year, junior Ethan Ng paced the Rams offensively in the first half, scoring 21 of his game-high 23 points before intermission. “Freshman Mason Oetgen and sophomore Tega Umukoro put the clamps on the Wolves’ main scoring threat Dominic Kemp, holding the talented junior to just five second-half points and 15 overall,” said Cate Director of Athletics Wade Ransom. Noticeably absent was Rams coach Andy Gil, who remained in Carpinteria as he and his wife Amy are awaiting the birth of their first child. Assistant Coach Joseph Cordero grabbed the reigns and helped the Rams jump on top early with a 35-29 lead at half. But the game got tight, with the Rams up 53-52 when Khadim Pouye (who scored 19 points) made two three-point plays—one from behind the arc, and one of the “and-one” variety. The Wolves completed an 8-0 run to claw back into the game. “Sophomore Nkemka Chukwumerije added a thunderous block to swing the momentum to Cate’s side one final time,” said Ransom. “The Rams got huge bench contributions from juniors Parker May, who helped control the wings defensively while adding six points, and Scott Holmes, who nailed a three to stave off a SJVA run just before halftime.” The Rams play the Carpinteria Warriors in the quarterfinal round on Thursday, Feb. 14, which will most likely be up at Cate Mesa.

February 9 – The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team traveled south to play the Chadwick Dolphins in their quarterfinal CIF match with the Warriors triumphing by a score of 9-7. “The entire squad performed exceptionally well, some notable performances include those from sophomore Kate Gay and junior Lexi Persoon,” said Carpinteria coach Sergio Castaneda. “These two athletes were the foundation of the Warriors’ defense,” added Castaneda. Gay, as the team’s goalkeeper, had a total of 20 blocks. Junior Sadie Mead and senior Jessica Cruz had three goals each.

With the win, the Warriors continue to the semifinals on Wednesday, Feb. 13, against Flintridge Prep in La Cañada with the result coming after this publication’s deadline.

February 7 – The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team suffered a 1-0 loss to the Valencia Vikings in the CIF-SS Division Four playoffs. “They scored off a defensive mistake in the 65th minute, we had plenty of opportunities the entire game and for unknown reasons the ball did not find the back of the net for us tonight,” said Warriors coach Leo Quintero.

C o a s ta l After winning the CIF-SS Division VI title and state title last year, the squad was moved up to Division Four this season.

“We are proud of this team and it will be a bittersweet departure for our graduating student athletes,” said Quintero who has nine seniors departing among the 11 starters. Carpinteria finished 9-8-3 on the season. “We will shake this one off, reset, regroup and prepare for next season,” said Quintero.

February 12 – The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team went on the road and beat top-three-seed Vistamar by a final score of 72-54. “We got a great defensive effort from Ian Reed to go along with his 10 points, Jo Jo Gonzalez gave us great minutes off the bench,” said Warriors coach Corey Adam. Noah Nuño led the way with 28 and Jose Suarez added 17. Carpinteria got off to one of their better starts of the season, going up 21-12 at the end of the first quarter. Vistamar never got closer than five points the rest of the way. Next game will be the quarter finals in “the battle of Carpinteria” against Cate.

February 6 – The Cate School girls soccer team beat Pilibos of Los Angeles, 7-0 in a CIF-SS Division Seven first-round playoff game on Wednesday at St. Bonaventure. Tali Nam scored a hat trick for the Rams, and Grace Blankenhorn contributed two goals. Lilly Riehl and Jolea Moes each tallied one apiece. Cate (8-2-3) now travels to top-seeded Notre Dame (Riverside) for a second-round match.

February 8 – The Cate School girls soccer team fell to Notre Dame of Riverside by a score of 1-0. The Titans scored in the first half when freshman Hailee Sanchez-Boo found sophomore Jocelyn Clark, who took the pass and deposited it in the Rams’ goal. Cate finishes 8-3-3 on the season.

The Far East plays a role in the far west

Though Carpinteria’s ethnic makeup has been dominated by European descendants and Mexican-Americans since the town’s earliest days, Chinese immigrants have also played an important, if small, role in the community. As with the rest of California, construction of the railroad brought a group of Chinese laborers through the town during the late 1800s. According to “Carpinteria as it Was” by Jayne Craven Caldwell, there was also a small cluster of Chinese homes in downtown Carpinteria during the early 1900s. Carpinteria native Manny Solari recalled in the pages of Caldwell’s book that the Chinese were not always warmly embraced by community members, stating, “kids used to throw rocks at the Chinamen.”

Cate School employed a number of Chinese cooks in its dormitory kitchen, and there were at least two Chinese laundries in town during its early history. In 1917, Gee Lee’s Laundry, located on Linden Avenue, burned to the ground after an electric iron was likely left on and overheated.

One of Carpinteria’s most well-known Chinese residents was a servant of the wealthy Heath family. Poi worked for the Heaths for 50 years according to early Carpinteria historian Albertina Rodriguez. When he finally retired, Poi moved back to China. Caldwell reported that upon his return, Poi found his homeland had changed drastically. Supposedly, he lived out his final days dreaming of Carpinteria.

Howard School students celebrate February festivities galore

Love conquers all

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY Lately, I’ve been catching a glimpse from the corner of my eye of a bow-andarrow carrying, flying cherub and it made me think—perhaps you know who you are, but do you know how you came to be? I put the question to Carpinterians and beyond regarding the first blush of affection between their parents and grandparents, and here are a few responses.

Sioux Pratt-Renfro wrote that her “great-grandfather was from Spain. He jumped ship in Santa Barbara and met my great-grandmother shortly after. I hear he was very charming, and they wed quite young.”

Lynn Ransom shared this story about her grandparents. “My great-grandmother made moonshine and my grandmother carried the jars downhill to the river where it was sold. My grandfather was a customer. Her nickname was Moonshine Annie. I cared for her in her later years (106!) and when she would give me a bad time I would tease her and say that if she didn’t behave, I’d put “Moonshine Annie” on her headstone. She always laughed.”

My parents-in-law, Basil and Bernice O’Reilly, had an exciting beginning to their married life, as they eloped and kept it secret for quite some time. Their daughter, Sharon Cutler, recalls her mother saying that she lived in Pray, Wisconsin and boarded during the week in Neillsville for high school. “Dad went to school in Granton and somehow they found each other. She and Dad ran away to the Little Brown Church in Iowa and were married there, partly because Dad was Catholic, and she wasn’t, and her family didn’t approve.” Basil and Bernice prevailed with their love and made a home for themselves and their nine children.

Kellie Burrey tells this story about how her parents, Dick and Marguerite Cernik, met, married and began their 51 years of life together. “They met in Rhode Island where my mom was a bookkeeper at a

Dick and Marguerite Cernik on their wedding day, Feb. 17, 1946. laundromat. My dad brought his Navy uniform in to be cleaned and pressed and saw her and was smitten. He told her he was on leave for a few days and asked her out, and everyone that she worked with told her to be careful of that Navy guy with those blue eyes! They went out and that was it.

“While he was on leave in Washington State, he went out with a bunch of his friends and got drunk, then called my mom, who was still in Rhode Island, and said, ‘Let’s get married! Come out here!’ So, she got on a train and arrived in Washington almost a week later, but my dad, after calling her, had gotten up the next morning to take a train to visit his mom in Bellflower, California.”

Marguerite was able to call him and took another train down to California where they were wed.

“Early in their marriage they lived in Bellflower and my dad worked at a machine shop during the day. A friend of his owned a bar so at night my dad and some of his work buddies would go there before going home. One Christmas, a machine shop customer brought in a bottle of booze as a gift, and my dad and one of his buddies partook in it throughout the day so when they got to the bar after work they were already pretty looped.

My dad had bought my mom a box of chocolates to bring home to her that night, and as he continued to drink he put the box of chocolates on the bar. When he left to go home he didn’t pick up the box of chocolates, he picked up another box that someone else had put on the bar. When he got home he handed mom the box and she opened it to find a large, dried fish!

She picked up the fish by its tail and proceeded to slap my dad’s cheek with it!”

That’s what I call a classic fish tale.

In celebration of Valentine’s Day, ask your elders about their romance, because after all, how could we be, and who would be, if our ancestors had not found love?

Katie’s notes on the day Is there a moment from your wedding that stands out from all the others?

Our reception! My father married us. He got ordained for our wedding and wrote the ceremony script. We wanted the ceremony to be a celebration and a unique, fun and exciting part of the day—not stiff, slow and boring, as some ceremonies can be. As Julian walked into the ceremony and towards the alter, everyone started cheering and yelli ng, and that high energy continued throughout the ceremony. It was just as I had hoped, a celebration and our favorite part of the day.

What did your guests say was their favorite facet of the event?

So many people said our ceremony was also their favorite part. But the food and signature drinks also seemed to be crowd favorites. We had tortillas being made from scratch on the spot, churros being made fresh for dessert, and spicy guava margaritas.

My family made Kalua-pig, a Hawaiian-style dish, and we offered Kalua pork tacos, as well as pollo and arrachera.

We also had one of our favorite bands play, One-Two-Tree; and that was very special.

Did your wedding include special details that reflected your individual personalities?

The decorations, food, music and style were all us. We wanted to have a combination of the two of us. It was kind of a Hawaiian/Mexican/Bohemian mix that came together so perfectly.

What was most stressful leading up to the wedding? How did you cope with that stress?

I think the most stressful thing had to be the planning and coordinating with the vendors. We didn’t have a wedding planner or coordinator, just a day-of coordinator and a team of people we hired for set up and break down. We didn’t know if it was all going to come together as we planned since we wouldn’t be there to help set up, but we just had to step back and cross our fingers.

Did you have to put out fires during the event? Looking back, could those have been prevented?

Apparently, the band was too loud, and the venue coordinator came up complaining. My dad talked to her and agreed to turn the speakers around, so they faced in the opposite direction and the day-of coordinator had to hold a sound decibel monitor to make sure it wasn’t too loud. We had no idea this even occurred until the next day.

We also had not reali zed that there were no li ghts set up by our bar and churro stand, but we managed, and it was actually nice because it deterred guests from hanging out at the bar instead of the dance floor.

Why did you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they work well with your vision?

Our number one requirement was a place where we could have both the ceremony and reception, so our guests didn’t have to travel from one to the other, but we also didn’t want to be looking at the reception area while getting married. Godric Grove at Eli ngs park was perfect. It has three separate areas within the area. There is a theatre type area where we had the ceremony, a large wooden deck area where we had the cocktail hour, and a large grass area for the reception. Plus, they have private parking, bathrooms and beautiful views. We met in Santa Barbara in 2007, and spent a lot of time on the mesa, so it was special to us as well.

What part of the meal did people enjoy most? Was there anything on the menu that you would skip if you had a redo?

We had tacos, shrimp and cheese-stuffed chilies, rice, beans and salad plus appetizers.

My only regret is not eating more. The fresh tortillas and the Kalua pig made for the tastiest tacos and that seemed to be the crowd favorite.

Plus, the hot churros.

Weddings can end up feeling like they’re for the guests instead of the bride and groom. What did you do to ensure that the day was wonderful for you?

We did our first-looks and got most of our photos out of the way before we went to the venue. We feel this was key to us enjoying every minute of the wedding and not missing the fun while off taking a milli on photos. It also gave us a private time to connect before the ceremony and took away a lot of those nerves of seeing each other for the first time.

We completely stuck to ourselves and planned everything for a party that we wanted to be at.

We used palm leaf plates and wooden utensils and cups made from recycled plastic.

We didn’t want to bother with anything we felt was unnecessary like glass wear and fancy plates.

What is your top piece of advice for couples planning a wedding?

Stay true to what makes you unique as a couple. Don’t be persuaded by others, stick to what you envisioned and don’t over think it. When you see something you like, go with it. We also highly recommend doing a first-look and pre-wedding photos.

This was something we debated, but wedding photos take a long time and you don’t want to miss your wedding or have your guests waiting for you during those lengthy wedding photoshoots. Get to celebrating!

Deborah’s notes on the day Is there a moment from your wedding that stands out from all the others?

When Travis and I did our first-look. It was so special and emotional, mostly joyful though. A time I’ll treasure, as it was a moment we had to ourselves before the ceremony and reception.

What did your guests say was their favorite facet of the event?

Our guests said they enjoyed all of it, but especially the dessert and the father-daughter dance.

Did your wedding include special details that reflected your individual personalities?

One of my favorite details from our wedding was the picture frame table numbers. I saved those frames for years wondering what I would do with them and it seemed fitting because I’m a photographer to include them in a creative way. It was fun and I think added a special touch. Also, Travis made programs that gave a good layout for our ceremony.

What was most stressful leading up to the wedding? How did you cope with that stress?

Pretty much all the planning! I’m a wedding photographer not a wedding planner and I reali zed that my gift is in doing my specific part. But my family and Travis’ family and friends had a huge hand in helping my vision come together. And it felt more like our vision in the end which is special to me that our big day incorporated more than just what I wanted.

Did you have to put out fires during the event? Looking back, could those have been prevented?

Nope! But from what I heard my planner and dad did. Honestly, I’d have it no other way because I trust those two a lot.

Why did you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they work well with your vision?

We chose them because they were close to family, a beautiful option, as well as the most affordable for our area. The Lions Club was where we had both the ceremony and reception and I could not have imagined a more beautiful place for our big day.

What part of the meal did people enjoy most? Was there anything on the menu that you would skip if you had a redo?

People liked the main course and our desserts. I wouldn’t change a thing.

Weddings can end up feeling like they’re for the guests instead of the bride and groom.

What did you do to ensure that the day was wonderful for you?

I wanted our guests to feel loved and thought of. They are the ones who supported our relationship, gave us gifts and cheered us on. For us, seeing the guests having a good time was really special to us. But the ceremony did seem like a good way for us to be celebrated as well and to give God the glory for bringing us together.

What is your top piece of advice for couples planning a wedding?

Don’t invest more in the wedding than your relationship! In my opinion, loans or debt aren’t necessary to have a dream wedding. My wedding was more than I could have imagined and we do not have to worry about paying anything off. Your wedding day is important but the relationship that’s being celebrated deserves way more attention and energy.

Emily’s notes on the day Is there a moment from your wedding that stands out from all the others?

Emily: Walking down the aisle, seeing all of my favorite people smiling. And then seeing my handsome groom at the end of the aisle waiting for me with an even bigger smile.

Mark: Catching a glimpse of my new wife during our post ceremony reception on the dance floor and just feeling truly and ridiculously happy knowing that she is MY wife and that I get to spend the rest of my life with her.

What did your guests say was their favorite facet of the event?

The food, décor, the photobooth and our wedding games (branded giant Jenga and corn hole).

Did your wedding include special details that reflected your individual personalities?

Yes, in a few different ways: The theme for our wedding was an “Ode to the Central Coast.” After such a devastating and tragic time that our community faced in early 2018 with the fires and mudslide, we wanted to do our part to honor this amazing area. We hand-selected all of our vendors and our venue to highlight our local community and also celebrate where we fell in love (in both Carpinteria and Santa Barbara) which embodies who we are as a couple.

To reflect Emily’s personality, we made sure to select an awesome food- and beverage- filled menu with little surprises around each corner. Since she is a professional in the food industry, we wanted to make sure her passion was reflected throughout our wedding and to keep everyone well-fed.

To reflect Mark’s personality, we gave out a few “surprise and deli ght” gifts to our guests, one being an antique vintage key (with a tag that said “your key to a good night”) which was a beer opener that unlocked the self-serve beer station. On each dinner table we placed flasks filled with Captain Morgan Rum and a card featuring a recipe for a “Frank” cocktail, and the story of Frank which is Mark’s silly yet-fun alter-ego.

What was most stressful leading up to the wedding? How did you cope with that stress?

Juggling wedding plans with working full time was a lot, especially when wedding planning feels like a full-time job. But wine seems to help, ha ha ha.

Did you have to put out fires during the event? Looking back, could those have been prevented?

Thank god we didn’t have to put out any fires, or deal with any more natural disasters.

We went through enough of that earlier in the year! We were lucky, the only hiccup we had during the big day was that the catering company forgot a full rack of our special hand-blown wine glasses for the dinner tables, but no one really noticed, and the catering company gave us a full refund plus a little more for the hassle.

Why did you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they work well with your vision?

We wanted a local location that had both indoor and outdoor space and that was a nice backdrop of Santa Barbara. We loved that Rockwood was centrally located and was able to accommodate up to 200 guests comfortably.

What part of the meal did people enjoy most? Was there anything on the menu that you would skip if you had a redo?

The pre-dinner Happy Hour reception was a big highli ght. We featured woodfired pizzas from Autostrada Pizza (now under new name Bettina in Montecito). The pizzas were amazing, and they put together the most adorable set-up with a portable pizza oven.

Our guests also loved our dessert bar by Crushcakes. We opted to not have a traditional wedding cake, but did a small cake surrounded by individual whimsical desserts like cupcakes, mini pies, cake pops, macarons, cookies, etc.

Weddings can end up feeling like they’re for the guests instead of the bride and groom. What did you do to ensure that the day was wonderful for you?

We decided not to have a wedding party. We have both been in several weddings and just wanted our friends to enjoy the day. Instead, we had Mark’s kids stand up during the ceremony with us to signify us becoming a family.

Additionally, we gave each other little surprises throughout the wedding day. Mark sent flowers and left a little note with wine in the bride room. Emily put a love note in his pocket and left a fun gift with socks (in case of cold feet). We also made sure to share a few quiet alone moments throughout the reception to steal a kiss or two, and just to relish in everything that was happening around us, and to see everyone who came to support us through this journey.

What is your top piece of advice for couples planning a wedding?

Keep it fun and simple. Don’t overcomplicate the details. Focus on each other through the process and don’t lose sight of why you are planning this fête!

Ashley’s notes on the day Is there a moment from your wedding that stands out from all the others?

If we were to choose one moment from the day we both agree it would be our first- look. When we started the wedding planning process we both wanted to do a first look but we didn’t realize how important it was until the wedding day. Having a moment between the two of us before the ceremony and without the chaos of planning and everyone else around was invaluable. Our photographers were there to capture the moment and it is absolutely one of our most cherished memories from our wedding day.

What did your guests say was their favorite facet of the event?

All of the feedback we received from our guests after the wedding was consistent on two things: everyone loved the photographers and how the wedding was a reflection of our personali ties.

Did your wedding include special details that reflected your individual personalities?

We included a number of personalized details, from the bride designing the table centerpieces, to the groom and groomsmen building an arbor for the ceremony area.

We both agreed from the onset of planning that our wedding should reflect who we are and adding personalized details and aspects of our individual personali ties was a great way to do that.

What was most stressful leading up to the wedding? How did you cope with that stress?

The most stressful thing leading up to the wedding was the wedding itself! If we were to break that down to something more specific we would say finali zing decisions and last- minute details. There are so many options in the wedding industry so deciding the right direction to go and what is most important for you is crucial.

Did you have to put out fires during the event? Looking back, could those have been prevented?

There were a few last-minute fires that popped up the morning of the wedding.

Looking back, a few of them could have been prevented but they were nothing major.

You have to realize that there are things that are not going to go as planned, and that is OK. The biggest thing we learned was to concentrate on the day, the friends and family that were around us and what we were celebrating.

Why did you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they work well with your vision?

We chose our venue because we wanted the ceremony and reception to be at the same location. We also wanted a venue that offered an outdoor rustic setting that we could transform into exactly what we wanted it to look like. Our venue gave us both of those things and more which allowed us to bring about the vision we wanted.

We think the aspect of the meal that our guests most enjoyed was that it was a classic representation of Santa Barbara. Hard to go wrong with tacos!

Our wedding was a representation of who we are and our friends, family and vendors helped us to plan and enjoy a day where we could all celebrate together. Yes, the day was about celebrating our wedding and our marriage but that was about celebrating with our friends and family. We made the day wonderful by prioritizing what we wanted and celebrating with those closest to us.

What is your top piece of advice for couples planning a wedding?

Make sure you plan the wedding that you want, not the wedding everyone else wants you to have. Hire a wedding coordinator to assist in planning and make sure that you can focus on yourselves the day of. Finally, prioritize your photography. This was such a crucial aspect for us as your wedding photos will last forever and having a photographer that makes you, the wedding party and your guests feel comfortable is completely invaluable.

myriah’s notes on the day

Is there a moment from your wedding that stands out from all the others? myriah’s father Joe gave a touching speech that ended with gifting a quilt to us made by myriah’s great grandmother Jessie, who was affectionately called “Sunshine.” the quilt was started many years prior in preparation for myriah’s wedding day. upon Sunshine’s passing, the quilt was completed by myriah’s cousin and aunt. the gifting of the quilt at the wedding and the thought of her grandmother making the quilt meant so much to myriah because she was so close with her great grandmother.

What did your guests say was their favorite facet of the event? everyone was complementing the wedding as a whole. they enjoyed the reception the most, dancing to great music provided by our dJ. did your wedding include special details that reflected your individual personalities? yes. We are easy-going people, so we tried to style our wedding in a manner that would be genuine to our nature, but also provide an elegant feel to the day. We didn’t have anything over-the-top but still had everything we could have ever wanted with the overall details.

What was most stressful leading up to the wedding? how did you cope with that stress? the most stressful part leading up to the wedding was making sure we had all the vendors secured and up-to-date with everything we wanted. our amazing wedding planner Suzie Schneider was beyond helpful in making sure we had everyone and everything that we wanted which we were more than grateful for. did you have to put out fires during the event? looking back, could those have been prevented? everything was going smoothly up until cocktail hour, we did open seating with a couple tables reserved for family and the wedding party. Some of our guests didn’t see the reserved signs, so our wedding planner had to rearrange the tables around to make sure our families were close to us.

Why did you choose your ceremony and reception venues? did they work well with your vision?

We chose our reception venue first because we fell in love with the idea of having a wedding weekend with our closest friends and family. We stayed in a private section of the venue with 19 cottages and spent the weekend celebrating our new chapter with our loved ones. We wanted our ceremony site to be really simple, private and intimate. our wedding planner found the perfect spot for that which was a park that was not too far from the reception venue.

What part of the meal did people enjoy most? Was there anything on the menu that you would skip if you had a redo? the shrimp cocktail was a hit and Stanley’s famous tri tip was right on point. there is not a single thing we would have skipped on our menu, everything was so delicious and just what we wanted.

When the planning started, we thought about our guests more then we should have but we kept reminding ourselves that this day was our day and we wanted it to be the way we envisioned. We knew that if we planned it the way we wanted it, our guests would enjoy it no matter what.

Is there a moment from your wedding that stands out from all the others?

We loved our entire wedding. Our first dance was particularly fun because all of the guests stood around us as we salsa danced for them. We had taken lessons leading up to our wedding and were excited to show off our moves. Everyone was clapping and cheering and it kicked off a wonderful night of Latin music and dancing.

What did your guests say was their favorite facet of the event?

The fact that it was very intimate and everyone got to know each other. The band was also a hit.

Did your wedding include special details that reflected your individual personalities?

Yes. Instead of table numbers, we had a designer we found through Etsy draw illustrations of some of our favorite things and important elements of our li fe (a fork with pasta, a coffee cup with biscotti, a rowboat).

What was most stressful leading up to the wedding? How did you cope with that stress?

The weather! Memorial Day weekend in Carpinteria usually means great weather is guaranteed. Last year, the week leading up to the wedding was cold, rainy and cloudy.

We didn’t have a fantastic back up plan in case of rain, but luckily we had spectacular weather.

Did you have to put out fires during the event? Looking back, could those have been prevented?

We personally did not have to but are assured that Toby did! We had an issue with the transportation company—the van couldn’t make its way up the driveway, and the driver meant to pick up the bride got lost. In the end, the guests had to walk half way up the driveway and the bride’s father drove her (and him) to the ceremony.

Why did you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they work well with your vision?

We were married at our parents’ house—it is a very special place to us and a fantastic venue for the type of wedding we wanted.

What part of the meal did people enjoy most? Was there anything on the menu that you would skip if you had a redo?

We wouldn’t skip anything. The truffle ravioli was a hit.

We had a very small wedding—41 people. It was wonderful for us to spend so much time with our family and friends and for all of them to get to know each other.

What is your top piece of advice for couples planning a wedding?

If there are multiple people involved in the planning (parents, sibli ngs, etc.), choose the two to three things that are most important to you (the food? the band?) and be open about the rest. On the actual day, the little details you were stressed about won’t even be on your mind!

The beautiful sanctuary of Carpinteria Community Church, adorned with stained glass windows and intimate lighting, is the perfect place for family and friends to gather on your big day. The rose garden creates a colorful backdrop for wedding photos. Stay & celebrate in the Parish Hall for your reception, with a seating capacity of 105 people (beer and wine acceptable). High beam ceilings, french doors, hardwood floor, and adjacent patio sets the stage for lasting memories.

Vanessa’s notes on the day Is there a moment from your wedding that stands out from all the others?

Vanessa: Walking out onto the balcony to walk down the aisle. For the first time everything was calm, and it was just me. I got to see my soon-to-be-husband along with my closest friends and family all together. At that moment, all the hard work and months of planning came together. For those few seconds, it was a moment to take in what this day was really about, sharing the moment when we start our li fe together as husband and wife with all of the people that we love.

Ryan: After the ceremony, all of our guests loaded the bus for the reception and for the first time it was just me and my new wife for our wedding photos. I picked her up and carried her onto the beach and it all became real, just the two of us starting our life together.

What did your guests say was their favorite facet of the event?

The location was a big one. The setting was perfect with our bridesmaids’ blue dresses blowing in the wind and the perfect beach weather. The bridesmaids loved spotting Mr. Kutcher and getting a special wave from him as he passed by while we were all getting ready, which was so kind of him. The wedding parties all loved the bus service.

It was such a fun part of the day and added a little extra to the drive. The vows and father-daughter dances were a favorite with the parents.

Did your wedding include special details that reflected your individual personalities?

Vanessa: It was really important to us that each piece of our special day had a personal touch to it. From those that we care deeply about, to those that are no longer with us, each section of our day was selected to symboli ze a special meaning to our family members.

Ryan: Being able to have it on the beach was the most meaningful to me; the ocean is my favorite place.

What was most stressful leading up to the wedding? How did you cope with that stress?

Being able to coordinate such a large wedding party as well as the last-minute details that couldn’t be done early was stressful but when things got hectic our family and friends jumped right in to help make sure everything was perfect.

Did you have to put out fires during the event? Looking back, could those have been prevented?

Vanessa: Nothing major, just minor things, but we had a wonderful support team of family and friends that made sure they were there to correct anything that went wrong as it happened.

Ryan: Having someone assigned to help the groomsmen coordinate the morning of would have helped.

Why did you choose your ceremony and reception venues? Did they work well with your vision?

A dear family friend graciously allowed our ceremony to take place at her home providing the best location we could have ever dreamed of, a secluded beach in the most beautiful part of town.

What part of the meal did people enjoy most? Was there anything on the menu that you would skip if you had a redo?

The food was all amazing. We did some catered along with some home cooked by our family. It was the perfect combination to incorporate different tastes, from oysters to tacos, it was all delicious.

Vanessa: This was the biggest piece of advice we received from our friends, that the day gets away from you and before you know it it’s over, and they were right. Luckily, we made sure we planned a set timeframe in between the ceremony and reception.

When all of the guests left for the reception, we stayed behind and had time just for us. We were able to do our wedding photos in a calm and relaxing setting with just us and our photographer. We were able to have some time to let it sink in before taking the bus to the reception.

Ryan: I made sure I didn’t get too nervous during vows and I was able to say “yes.”

What is your top piece of advice for couples planning a wedding?

Vanessa: Definitely taking time to step back and enjoy the day with your new spouse, it goes by so quickly. Don’t get caught up in what everyone else wants. Everyone will have an opinion but making it special for you and your spouse is what it’s all about.

The best part of our day was that it was special to us, with our family we did almost everything ourselves making it that much more meaningful.

Ryan: Do the rehearsal as many times as possible, at least three runs.
