Consider these types of tax-smart contributions This year’s tax-filing deadline of April 18 is not that far off, but you still have time to make some moves that could favorably affect your tax returns.

So, you may want to consider making some taxsmart contributions.

You have until the April 18 filing deadline to contribute to an IRA, or to open one for the 2021 tax year. When you invest in a traditional IRA, your earnings can grow on a tax-deferred basis and your contributions may be tax deductible, depending on your income level. And as a result of recent legislation, you can now fund a traditional IRA past age 70½, as long as you have earned income.

If you invest in a Roth IRA, your contributions aren’t tax deductible, but your earnings can grow tax free if you don’t take withdrawals until you’re at least 59½ and you’ve had your account for five years. For the 2021 tax year, you can put up to $6,000 in an IRA, or $7,000 if you’re 50 or older. (If you’re a high earner, the amount you can contribute to a Roth IRA may be reduced or eliminated, while contributions to a traditional IRA may not be tax deductible.)

If you were to contribute to a health savings account (HSA) last year, you can also contribute to that for the 2021 tax year, up to the April 18 deadline. An HSA has triple tax advantages: Your contributions are made with pre-tax dollars, so they can reduce your taxable income for the year; your earnings grow tax-free; and your withdrawals are tax-free, provided the money is used for qualified medical expenses. For the 2021 tax year, you can contribute up to $3,600 to an HSA as an individual, or $7,200 for a family. And if you are 55 or older, you can contribute an extra $1,000 to your HSA. The contribution limits do include the amount your employer puts in, so, for example, if your employer has already kicked in $1,000, you can only contribute $2,600 to your individual HSA or $6,200 for your family. (Again, you can add $1,000 more

if you are 55 or older.)

And, as you know, one of the big advantages of an HSA is that it is not subject to “use it or lose it” rules – you can roll over your savings from year to year. As such, an HSA can be a valuable account for helping you build resources for retirement, when your health care costs will undoubtedly go up.

In looking beyond the 2021 tax year, you may want to consider other ways to make taxsmart contributions. For example, in addition to contributing to your IRA and HSA, you may have access to a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan. In 2022, you can put in up to $20,500 to your 401(k), or $27,000 if you’re 50 or older. And, if your employer allows it, you can exceed these limits by making after-tax contributions. Also, if you need to save for education, you might want to consider a 529 educations savings plan, which offers some tax advantages.

Workforce housing lottery to be held Feb. 10

The city of Carpinteria will hold the lottery for workforce housing on Thursday, Feb. 10, at 5:30 p.m. The in-person, outside event will be held under the tent next to the Council Chambers at City Hall. Applicants do not need to be present to win.

DA warns of email scam

Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley has issued a warning about an email scam currently targeting the Santa Barbara area community. The scammer gains access to the victim’s email account, including the victim’s contact list. The scammer, pretending to be the victim, sends emails to everyone in the contact list asking them to purchase gift cards to help someone in need. Many people in Santa Barbara County have been victimized by this scam. If you receive such an email, contact the alleged sender directly to see if he or she actually sent the request. If you are a victim of this scam, report to the FBI at ic3.gov.

City seeks input on local hazard mitigation

The city of Carpinteria is updating its Local Hazard Mitigation Plan (LHMP) and is seeking the public’s input. The purpose of the LHMP update is to improve disaster preparedness and reduce or eliminate risks to the community, life and property. “A really, horribly bad idea”: Planners slam dune & shoreline management plan

BY EVELYN SPENCE The Carpinteria Planning Commission expressed a number of concerns with the dune & shoreline management plan on its agenda on Monday, with Commissioner John Callender calling the plan “a really, horribly bad idea.”

All four members of the planning commission slammed the plan – which aims to help with sea level rise in Carpinteria – and motioned to advise the Carpinteria City Council that the project needs more work.

The plan seeks to protect the beach neighborhood, downtown areas and other public utilities that are threatened by sea level rise. It covers 1.5 miles of coastline, from the mouth of the Carpinteria Salta Marsh to the western edge of Tar Pits Park, and falls under three jurisdictions: the county, the city and the California Department of Parks and Recreation.

The plan proposes a living shoreline for Carpinteria, involving beach nourishment, dune restoration, dune enhancement and a sand retention structure, also known as a groin. If approved and constructed on time, it would protect the city’s beach neighborhood from sea level rise through 2050-2070, according to plan documents. The city held several public workshops on the matter prior to the plan’s presentation at the Monday night planning commission meeting.

Environmental Program Manager Erin Maker, who presented the plan at Monday’s meeting, stressed that a dune system for the beach “has a lower maintenance cost than doing nothing.”

But commissioners brought up concerns with the fluctuating cost of initial construction and maintenance, which Maker estimated could be between $9 million and $12 million. Funding would come from a combination of local, state and federal funds. Once the plan is approved, Maker’s team would seek out additional funding for the project.

“I’m not convinced by the… language in the report that we’re able to fund it,” Callender said, stating that in his mind, the project has “very little long-term value.”

“I feel like this takes all of our available resources and potentially more resources than we would have available,” he added.

“We’re going to lose time by not moving forward with something that has more long-term value.”

Maker said there would be an annual maintenance costs of the living shoreline, although there isn’t a way to predict exactly what it would be; costs would vary depending on storms, fires, potential dune reconstruction and other variables.

“We don’t have a magic ball to read into the future,” she said.

The Dune & Shoreline Management Plan covers 1.5 miles of coastline, from the mouth of the Carpinteria Salt Marsh to the western edge of Tar Pits Park. the project was “hard to conceptualize and visualize.” He suggested enlarging the beach at its current location, and said it was difficult to imagine a large sand retention structure, or groin, on the beach.

“Is this a worthwhile effect to even attempt?” he asked.

Chair Jane Benefield added that she also thought any groin on the beach would be temporary, and expressed concerns with funding.

“I, too, generally don’t look at the money, but in this case it’s too much,” she said. “We do need outside funding.”

All commissioners expressed interesting keeping the current protection plan – a winter berm – in place yearlong.

Maker said keeping the current winter berm in place year-round would result in the loss of many of the beach’s recreational benefits.

The Carpinteria City Council will review the plan at its Feb. 14 meeting.

The city planning commission also approved a mini-storage expansion for McCann Mini-Storage at 1222 Cravens Lane on Monday. All development, save for an additional outside door, will be done inside two existing warehouse structures to create an additional 182 new mini-storage rental units.

Planner Syndi Souter called the item a “typical project,” but said the planning commission had to look over it due to the 13,000 additional square footage the project requires.

The item unanimously passed with little discussion.

FDA fully approves Moderna vaccine for 18+ County test positivity rate drops to 17.2%

The Food and Drug Administration fully approved the Moderna vaccine for those 18 and older last week. It was first approved for emergency use for those older than 18 in December 2020.

This is the second Covid-19 vaccine to be fully approved by the FDA. The FDA fully approved the Pfizer vaccine in August 2021.

“The FDA’s approval of Spikevax is a significant step in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, marking the second vaccine approved to prevent Covid-19.

The public can be assured that Spikevax meets the FDA’s high standards for safety, effectiveness and manufacturing quality required of any vaccine approved for use in the United States,” Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock, M.D., said.

“While hundreds of millions of doses

of Moderna Covid-19 Vaccine have been administered to individuals under emergency use authorization, we understand that for some individuals, FDA approval of this vaccine may instill additional confidence in making the decision to get vaccinated.”

The vaccine will be known as Spikevax, according to a release from the FDA. It has the same formulation as the emergency Moderna covid-19 vaccine, and is also administered in two doses one month apart. It can be used “interchangeably” with the emergency-use Moderna Covid-19 vaccine, according to a press release from the FDA. Director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research Peter Marks said vaccines are the “best defense against the Covid-19 pandemic” and its

variants.

“The FDA’s medical and scientific experts conducted a thorough evaluation of the scientific data and information included in the application pertaining to the safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality of Spikevax. This includes the agency’s independent verification of analyses submitted by the company, our own analyses of the data, along with a detailed assessment of the manufacturing processes, test methods and manufacturing facilities,” he said.

Santa Barbara County reported 3,866 new cases between Jan. 28 and Feb. 3, for 3,564 active cases within the county. The county also reported 18 new deaths that week, for a total of 617 total deaths due to Covid-19.

On Sunday, the county confirmed

81,073 total cases. As of Feb. 2, the case rate is at 86.46, with a 17.2% test positivity rate. As of Sunday, 66.8% of the county is fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

Omicron is still the majority Covid-19 variant seen within the county, after first appearing in late December.

Cannabis grow approved for 4701 Foothill Road

Federal vs. state regulations for cannabis, concerns with CHS distance heavily discussed

BY EVELYN SPENCE The county planning commission unanimously voted “yes” last Wednesday on a Van Wingerden cannabis grow at 4701 Foothill Road, following a lengthy meeting and several claims from public commenters that the operation itself is illegal due to its closeness to the high school.

The operation is spread across two parcels, at 18.49 and 10.74 acres, with a cannabis grow on the former. The properties are owned by Ed Van Wingerden; his son, Ivan Van Wingerden, presented at last Wednesday’s meeting, explaining that the grow is on a 468,000 square feet site. No cannabis processing will occur onsite.

Planner Gwen Beyeler said the existing greenhouse, which was built in the 1980s and used to grow flowers, will be split into nursery and mature cannabis cultivation, with a wall separating the two.

The site itself – a point of contention with public commenters – is only 400 feet away from the boundary of Carpinteria High School and the parcel. However, the operation uses a line inside the greenhouse to keep mature cannabis cultivation 750 feet away from the high school buffer line, and nursery cultivation 600 feet away. The buffer is measured from the edge of cultivation to the property line of the school, not property line to property line.

The extra space will be used for storage, according to Beyeler’s presentation.

The operation will have 57 full-time employees working between 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m, Monday through Saturday, with parking on-site. New landscaping will be put in to fill vegetation gaps, to screen the area from the public and the residential area directly next to the parcel.

As with the last Van Wingerden grow––owned by Winfred Van Wingerden––approved by the county planning commission last month, the greenhouse will have carbon scrubbers installed.

President Philip Greene said Ever-Bloom is in the process of installing over 100 carbon scrubbers in the greenhouse, with 10 scrubbers per acre in the mature flowering area, and slightly less in the nursery area. The scrubbers will run 24/7.

Greene said the operation begins a full-scale testing of the greenhouse carbon scrubbers this month. In response to a question from Commissioner John Parke, Greene said it cost $2 million to install the scrubbers.

The county planning commission also approved a new 100-foot setback from the property line, the demolition of some existing structures on the property and five new water tanks, among other changes.

County legal counsel Callie Kim and Planner Beyeler separately clarified that the operation does follow local and state laws.

Beyeler said with the 600- and 750-feet buffers within the greenhouse, the project complies with all local regulations.

“With respect to other buffers that were noted in the public comment (…) I saw some comment stating that the parcel was within 400 feet of the high school, so I want to confirm that the cultivation is compliant because the way that we measure the buffer is from the edge of the cultivation to the property line of the school. Although the properties are 400 feet away, the cultivation is complaint with the setback,” Beyeler told the commission.

Kim said the law that a number of public commenters were citing – federal law (21 USC § 860) – is, in fact, a sentencing enhancement for federal crimes, and not directly applicable in this instance to legal, California cannabis grows.

“(The law) means that if you commit a federal crime within a certain proximity of a school, you could be fined, imposed a high fine, or spend more time in jail,” Kim said. “It really comes down to this: yes, we’re in a gray area, where federal law treats cannabis different than state and local law, but that’s been the case for a long time now and isn’t particular to this project.”

Rather than focus on specific aspects of the 4701 Foothill Road project, many public commenters brought up issues with the cannabis smell as a whole in Carpinteria and the legality of cannabis in California.

Commenter Anna Carrillo called measuring the buffer between the property line and inside the greenhouse “problematic,” while commentor Becky Rapp said she was “deeply concerned” for the students at the high school.

“In no way is 450 feet far away enough from a high school with students who are struggling with the situation following a pandemic,” Rapp said. “Having marijuana growing that close, smelling it, seeing it, having it normalized, is unacceptable.”

Others who live in the neighborhood behind the grow, such as commenter Hank Postma, said he has no issue with the smell when he walks his two daughters to school each day.

Jay Hotchner, Carpinteria Middle School teacher and president of CAUSE, the teachers’ union, said the union performed a survey amongst teachers and workers at CUSD. He said they expressed concern about having the production so close to the schools and offered to send his data to the planning commission.

Commissioners were quick to remind public commenters that the county planning commission itself does not decide

whether cannabis is legal, and that their expertise lies in land-use issues. Also discussed was that the location is not a cannabis retail shop, that processing will not occur onsite, and that how the smell affects the area is often a “he said, she said” issue.

“Marijuana (becoming) legal by the voters was decided several years ago.

That’s not for (the planning commission) to decide,” Commissioner Daniel Blough said.

Blough praised the Van Wingerden operation, citing it as “the kind of operation I envisioned we should limit the cannabis grow to in the very beginning.”

Commissioner Laura Bridley said she took exception with some of the comments made at the meeting.

“The theme that I heard over and over, as much as some of it was (about) odor, was ‘We don’t like marijuana,’” she said. “’We’re going to ruin the youth, and they’re going to have additional psychotic episodes because this is being grown 600 feet away.’ And I can’t follow that leap in logic. This isn’t a retail sale site. This is actually a growing site.”

Caution or superstition?

This last week had two events that I would have thought unthinkable two years ago. First, my unmasked wife was accosted at an outdoor farmer’s market stand by two masked women when she drew near to the produce stand they were at. They yelled “get away from me” and threw their hands up to ward her off, as if she might be that statistical anomaly that catches Covid-19 from casual outdoor contact. Current studies put that number at less than .1% of infections.

Later, we received a notice from our local school asking that my child submit his Valentine’s Day cards a week early so they could sit untouched for a period of seven days before handing them out to the children. Never mind that they play with the same balls at recess or touch the same doorknobs, or that the virus isn’t transmitted through touch. Both of these examples are indicative of how far we as a society have gone down the path of fear and irrationality. And it’s no small wonder, when the official messaging has turned friends and family into potential disease vectors. Lock down! Stay at home, even if the vast majority of transmission is done indoors.

This has to end. Enough with the county health recommendations that resemble superstition more than sense. Take note

VIEWPOINT Clearing up confusion related to recent electrical bills

BY ERIN MAKER CITY OF CARPINTERIA ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM MANAGER The city of Carpinteria recently joined Central Coast Community Energy (CCCE) for the economic and environmental benefits that are derived from local control over our electricity needs. It has come to our attention, however, that there is some confusion about recent electrical bills received by Carpinterians. We want to help you understand what has changed and steer you to some important information and resources.

Currently, CCCE charges less for electric generation than SCE does – you can view the current rate comparison on SCE’s website. SCE recently raised its rates which include Transmission and Distribution charges. For those of you who are experiencing higher electricity costs, this is likely the cause. Additionally, winter months and spending more time than normal at home during the pandemic increase energy usage.

Specific to the conversation about rates, please remember that being enrolled with CCCE means SCE will no longer charge you for Electric Generation (how your electricity is generated), but SCE will continue charging you for Transmission and Distribution (how your electricity is delivered). CCCE is now in charge of how and where your electricity is generated, and you should see a line item for CCCE Electric Generation Charges on your bill a month or so after you are enrolled.

Finally, beyond rates and the cost of using electricity please keep in mind that CCCE customers have access to Energy Programs that assist households and businesses with the transition from

Put the Surfliner Inn elsewhere

I want to address the ongoing debate about the proposed Surfliner Inn. Why hasn’t anyone seen the elephant in the room? We have this giant, block-long, empty building right smack in the middle of town: the old Austin’s Hardware Store.

If a number of people want another hotel so badly in Carpinteria, why not convert this waste of space into something?

I personally know business owners on Linden Avenue, and they could use an influx of tourists in the winter when the streets go empty. So why not let a developer turn this ghost-building into a hotel? The entrance area, where we used to park for the hardware store, could serve as the drop-off point and temporary parking while guests check in. A café could be located inside, at the corner of Linden Avenue and Sixth Street, utilizing the large windows. More windows could be put into the side walls for the lobby, a gift shop and meeting rooms. Of course, another level would need to be built on top of the building for rooms – no small task of course.

Maybe the existing parking lot by the tracks, at the center of the ongoing controversy, could be where the guests park unless they come by train. Then everybody is happy, right?

Let’s assess traffic impacts too

When can we expect a Walker Parking Report to include not only the future parking needs for downtown Carpinteria, but a more comprehensive assessment

of how redeveloping the Linden Street corridor will impact the traffic and transportation needs of our local business community?

It appears to be rather shortsighted for the city council to commission yet another Walker review of parking only, when the Linden Street corridor will be dramatically impacted by at least two, if not three, future redevelopment projects: a bank, the former hardware store at Linden Avenue, and the Surfliner Inn. When can we expect a comprehensive planning document that will accurately assess the future needs of our transportation and traffic patterns for a wise and sustainable future for not only the tourist economy, but for those who live in our seaside community?

Do I need to remind you all we are living in a vulnerable community highly at risk for future disasters? We need our city council to expand its vision and request that consultants design future plans, reports and projects accordingly.

When can we, as concerned residents and stakeholders, expect a wise and sustainable planning document from your designated consultants? We will ask at future city council meetings too.

Repeal Prop. 19

Proposition 19 had a little-noticed provision in it that will force families to sell homes and small businesses parents had hoped to pass on to their children. Prop.

19 repealed Prop. 58, which was placed on the ballot in 1986 by a unanimous vote of the Legislature, then passed with the approval of over 75% of state voters. Prop.

58 protected family properties from reassessment when property is transferred between parents and children. Without it, property will be reassessed to market value when it is passed to children, and the property taxes will be sharply higher.

This will force many families to sell properties, including small family businesses, after parents worked so hard for so many years to pay for them.

The Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association has filed an initiative to repeal the changes that Prop. 19 made to the intergenerational transfers and restore the law back to the way it was before. To further protect families, the measure adjusts for inflation for a limited amount of property, in addition to the primary residence.

School district retaliated against local union president, case finds

Union president issued two notices of unprofessional conduct in 2019

BY EVELYN SPENCE The Carpinteria Unified School District retaliated against its employees’ union president, the Public Employee Relations Board, or PERB, found in November.

In the PERB case, Carpinteria Association of United School Employees (CAUSE), Local 2216 v. Carpinteria Unified School District, the board found that the district had retaliated against the union’s president, Jay Hotchner, by issuing two notices of unprofessional conduct for actions that fell under protected activities, per PERB documents. PERB handles public employee labor rights.

Hotchner has worked at Carpinteria Middle School for over 20 years and has been union president for about 16, he said.

“We believe the district was not only determined to have retaliated against Union leadership, but determined to misuse (its power) in a variety of ways,” Hotchner told CVN. “I feel that this legal action that we took was critical to protecting the voice of the district employees who we represent, and that voice is critical,” he added. “Every good system requires a level of transparency where concerns can be communicated to upper management, and upper management can take that seriously.”

District Superintendent Diana Rigby called PERB’s decision concerning.

“It is concerning that PERB protects a Union member with unprofessional conduct when educators are expected to model good behavior for students,” she told CVN. The issues first stemmed from two notices of unprofessional conduct the district issued to Hotchner in August 2019 and October 2019.

The first notice involved three incidents: a 2017 knock-knock joke, conduct at a June 2019 layoff meeting and issues with Director of Human Resources Diana Zapata in June 2019.

“Hotchner said, ‘knock knock,’ students replied, ‘who’s there?’ and Hotchner responded, ‘Immigration!’ while moving quickly toward a Latino student,” PERB documents stated. One of the students repeated the joke to their mother, who then filed an anonymous complaint with the district. A memo about the incident, from the district’s investigator, was not placed in Hotchner’s personnel file.

According to the documents, Hotchner testified he had “used this joke or something similar every year in his social studies class as a way to arouse student interest before discussing the concept of an organized police state.”

first notice of unprofessional conduct occurred during June 2019 layoff meetings, which Hotchner attended with two other elected union members.

PERB documents state that a district employee overheard Hotchner stating the district was using “fear tactics” on its employees. The district also alleged that Hotchner behaved inappropriately and unprofessionally during the meetings, but, according to PERB documents, there was “almost no evidence” of what Hotchner said during the meetings.

The third incident occurred on June 7, 2019, surrounding an employees’ personnel file. According to PERB documents, Zapata said Hotchner was “berating her” over getting an employees’ personnel file,

and that he told her she was “shirking her duties as a HR person.” Hotchner and then-Union Vice President Eric Lewis contradicted Zapata’s version of events.

“Even crediting Zapata’s testimony that Hotchner raised his voice, accused her of ‘shirking’ her duties, and repeatedly rang the office bell, this conduct was at most impulsive and centered on dealing with and commenting on working conditions and management’s relationship with the Union,” PERB documents state.

Zapata issued Hotchner a second notice of unprofessional conduct in October 2019, after he left two voicemail messages on a parent’s phone on June 21, 2019.

The parent in question had complained about a teacher Hotchner was representing in a discipline case, according to PERB documents. Hotchner said he had meant to contact the teacher, not the parent, and was given the wrong phone number during a mix-up.

In the October notice, the district alleged Hotchner called the parent and “pretend(ed) to be calling (the) Teacher to intimidate and fright (the) Parent.”

The PERB board found that Hotchner had not intentionally meant to contact the parent, and that he was not trying to intimidate the parent.

CAUSE first filed an unfair practice charge on Nov. 1, 2019 with PERB, stating that Hotchner’s actions were protected activity because he was acting in his role as union president during the incidents above. PERB’s general counsel stated in June 2020 that the district had retaliated against Hotchner, and as such “denied CAUSE its right to represent members.”

The district filed an answer on June 24, 2020, with virtual hearings held on Dec. 7-11, 2020 and Jan. 5-6, 2021. PERB again found in May 2021 that the district had retaliated against Hotchner, and the district challenged the decision.

November’s decision agreed with the PERB counsel’s original findings.

Richard Luera 4/12/1940 – 1/30/2022

Richard Luera passed away peacefully in his sleep on Jan. 30, 2022.

Richard was born in Santa Barbara County on April 12, 1940 to Gabriela Talamantez. As the youngest of five siblings, he grew up in Santa Maria and eventually moved to Carpinteria, where he met his beloved wife Rose Marie (Dee Dee). They were married to for 52 years. They raised two daughters: Diana (Luera) Bautista and Victoria Luera. Later, he became a grandpa of five grandchildren, Johnny, Veronica, Joanna, Luciana and Adrian, and a great-grandpa to Ezri, Daniel and Michael.

Richard enjoyed watching his sports.

He played football in high school, at the Home of the Warriors, and later went on to coach softball. He enjoyed his working days at UC Santa Barbara and retired gracefully after 40 years. Richard spent his final days in his home surrounded by family who loved him dearly, and was met at the gates of heaven by his beloved wife Dee Dee and great-grandson Christian.

Rosary Services were held on Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. and the Mass on Wednesday, Feb. 9 at 10 a.m., at the St. Joseph’s Church in Carpinteria, followed by the burial at the Carpinteria cemetery. WelchRyce-Haider Funeral Chapels is handling arrangements.

Catalina Marquez 11/25/32 – 1/29/2022

After an extraordinary life that took her from poverty in the Mexican countryside where she was born in 1932 to the shores of Carpinteria, Catalina Marquez died late last month at the age of 89.

Affectionally known to all as “Grandma” or “Abuelita,” she was known for her legendary cooking, her love for her family and an incredible strength of spirit that made her the center around which the whole family revolved.

Catalina was married in 1957 to Luis Marquez in San Francisco del Rincon, Guanajuato, Mexico, and at the age of 25, she took in four orphaned children as her own. Four children were born to her in Mexico as well, and in 1965, while six months pregnant with twin girls, she immigrated to the United States and joined her husband in Carpinteria.

A total of four children were born to her in the United States. She is survived by her children Juana (Henry), Heron, Jose (Rachel), Erasmo (Jaela), Petra, Martha, Edward (Judy) and Maria (Rene). She was preceded in death by her husband in 2015.

Catalina is also survived by dozens of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. It is with absolute certainty that her family was the focus of her being. She was loved by all, and all were better for knowing her.

Graveside services were held at Calvary Cemetery in Santa Barbara on Feb. 4, 2022.

COFFEE, CAREER AND KIDDOS T E R E S A A LVA R E Z Nearly a year ago, I wrote about the challenges I faced as a working mom during a pandemic. Fast forward to today, and I find myself feeling the same as I did then, if not worse. I no longer have to always work from home, but still do when the kids get sent home from school with Covid-like symptoms or are exposed to someone with Covid-19. My husband and I scramble to figure out who will take care of who and when and who will get to work what hours. It is so difficult to continue to live in such uncertainty.

When we felt like things were feeling more “normal,” this new variant rocked our worlds again.

Last week, my husband tested positive for Covid; a few days later, my younger son tested positive, then my eldest son, and finally me. I’ve been trying to juggle work, the kids and my mental wellbeing, and I have not been very successful with any of it. My son showed all my colleagues his lunch during a Zoom call – not on his plate, in his mouth. I have cried more times than I’d like to admit, and my kids’ brains are probably fried from how much screen time they’ve had.

Before laying my exhausted head to rest, I say to myself, “I did enough.” I don’t always believe it, but I say it because this is not the time to feel mom guilt. We are all truly doing the best we can.

Teresa Alvarez and her family enjoy their winter vacation just two days before testing positive for Covid-19.

With her baby at home with Covid-19, Teresa Alvarez faces the challenges of the “new normal.” there are a few lessons I’ve learned during this time. It’s okay to ask for help. The team at Carpinteria Children’s Project (CCP) has been wonderful in helping me with work tasks, but also in caring for me and my family. The board and other colleagues have brought us dinner and homemade cookies. Family and friends have texted and called to check in. We feel so blessed!

Gratitude has kept us going. Whether it is at the dinner table, before bed or while playing outside in the yard, I remind the kids of all that we have to be grateful for in our community. As I prepare reports of 2021, I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for the hundreds of Carpinterians who gave time and treasure to support our Carpinteria Valley children and families during such uncertain times.

I’m a leader and a parent – two roles that are expected to keep it all together.

I hope that my being a little vulnerable helps you feel less alone right now.

Needing help, being vulnerable, relying on each other and being grateful will get us through these tough times.

At CCP, we are happy to help bring families hot meals, PPE and soon, test kits. We are excited to partner with the city of Carpinteria in distributing test kits to families in the upcoming weeks. Our Family Resource Center staff is available to support families’ access mental health services and much more. Lean on us! We all need our village.

Teresa was born in Guanajuato, Mexico, and moved to the U.S. with her parents at age two. Growing up as an undocumented student, she learned the importance of having mentors, a strong work ethic, and the value of education. Teresa holds a bachelor›s degree in Sociology from UCSB and a master›s degree in Psychology from Antioch Santa Barbara.

She currently serves on the Future Leaders of America board and is a founding member of the Santa Barbara Latino Giving Circle.

Architectural Foundation SB hosts talk with Carpinteria artist and poet

The Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara will present a conversation between Carpinteria artist Pecos Pryor and Carpinteria poet Molly Jane Burns with a theme of “Attention to Loss.”

The free event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m., in the Architectural Foundation’s courtyard.

Debra Herrick, editor of CVN and Lum Art Magazine, will moderate.

The talk will feature Pryor and Burns discussing how grief and the loss of loved ones have impacted their lives and artistic practices. AThe event is held in connection with the Architectural Foundation Gallery’s current exhibition, “Attention to Loss,” a solo show of artwork that Pryor created during a time of deep grief, including drawings, printmaking and sculpture. The exhibition is on view through March 5.

“The art produced in this time has been physical, contemplative, full of mad and sad tears as well as loving ones,” Pryor said.

“I have created traffic cones built from clay, concrete, and fiberglass, and carved from wood, stone, and plaster; drawings of single unmade beds; self-portraits; woodcuts, etchings and mono prints derived from the imagery of sculptures and shadows; and monotonously colored full sheets of paper, dark space – no answers, but some color.

CMS announces spelling bee winners

Carpinteria Middle School students competed in the CMS spelling bee at the Masonic Lodge, which has hosted the event annually since 1986.

The first-place winner, Taison Lee, took home $350; the second-place winner, Madison Lee, won $250; and the third-place winner, Janalle Abdulhai, received $150.

“Congratulations to the CMS spellers!” CMS Principal Lisa O’Shea said.

The students will move on to the county spelling competition which is scheduled for later this month.

Carpinteria poet Molly Burns teaches writing workshops at the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center, and will participate in a conversation on grief, loss and art at the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara on Saturday. at Westmont College and printmaking at Santa Barbara City College.

Burns has a BA in English from San Diego State University, and teaches writing workshops at the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center. She previously taught poetry classes at the center as well, and was recently featured in “Small Town Big Art,” which showcased 100 Carpinteria artists.

The Architectural Foundation is located at 229 E. Victoria St. in Santa Barbara.

The new southbound Sheffield Drive off-ramp is now open.

Work continues at Arroyo Parida Creek.

Speed limit lowered to 30mph between N. Jameson Lane and Sheffield Drive The speed limit is now at 30mph in the stretch between N. Jameson Lane and Sheffield Drive, due to sound wall construction. Bikes will share the eastbound lane with vehicles, and the CalTrans team asks that motorists be careful with bicyclists in that area.

On the northbound side, one late between Route 150 and Sheffield Drive, as well as the off-ramps at Bailard Avenue and North Padaro Lane, are closed Sunday nights between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m.

During the week of Feb. 13, Monday through Thursday, those same areas – as well as the off-ramps at Bailard Avenue, Casitas Pass Road and Santa Monica Road – will be closed between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m.

The on-ramp at Sheffield Drive closed on Jan. 11 and is scheduled to reopen on July 13. The on-ramp at San Ysidro Road can be used as a detour.

On the southbound side, one lane between Sheffield Drive and Route 150, and the on- and off-ramps at South Padaro Lane, Santa Claus Lane and Bailard Avenue, will be closed Sunday nights between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.

During the week of Feb. 13, those sane areas, as well as the on- and off-ramps at Linden Avenue and Casitas Pass road, will be closed between 8 p.m. and 7:30 a.m.

Drivers can use the southbound onramp at North Padaro Lane in lieu of the on-ramp at Sheffield Drive. The offramp at Evans Avenue closed on Jan. 23 and will reopen on Oct. 24. Drivers can detour at the southbound off-ramp at Sheffield Drive.

South Padaro Lane, under Highway 101, will be closed on Feb. 10, 14 and 18 between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Detours are available along Santa Claus Lane, Santa Ynez Avenue, Carpinteria Avenue and Via Real.

Padaro interchange remains in place.

Construction crews are also finishing up sound walls and maintenance doors between Santa Ynez Avenue and Santa Monica Creek.

Traffic was backed up for several hours due to the incident. The lanes reopened around 8 p.m. that same day.

Carpinteria firefighters, sheriff’s deputies, lifeguards, boy scouts surprised local Lorenzo Martinez, a longtime Carpinterian and postman, on Saturday with an honorary firefighter ceremony for his service to the community.

The ceremony was a surprise for Martinez, 93, according to Fire Marshal Rob Rappaport. Martinez was given an honorary firefighter’s helmet and honored by locals, who all spoke fondly of Martinez’s contributions to the community.

“At 93, Lorenzo is every bit still a Marine,” keynote speaker Chief Michael Gallagher told attendees.

Gallagher spoke highly of Martinez’s contributions to the community, as well as Martinez’s history with the U.S. Navy.

Martinez joined the U.S. navy in January 1951, during the Korean War. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion in the 7th Marines. Martinez received a purple heart for wounds he received while in Korea, according to Gallagher.

After returning from war, he worked for the county parks department between 1954 and 1958, and then worked as a postman in the area, becoming Carpinteria’s “first ‘walking mailmen’” between Linden Avenue and Concha Loma, Gallagher said.

Carpinteria Cub Scouts, Troop 50

Cub Scouts delight at annual pinewood derby PHOTOS BY ROBIN KARLSSON

For decades, Carpinteria Cub Scout Troop 50 has held an annual pinewood derby for scouts. Mike LoMonaco, current troop leader, remembers participating in the event in the 1980s, when he was a cub scout. “We’ve been doing this forever,” he said, “and it’s always the kids’ favorite event of the year.” But this year, LoMonaco said was special. “Everybody was just excited to have this event based on everything that’s going on around us. Everybody was out; everybody was enthusiastic. Those kids put their hearts in those cars and there were some amazing cars this year.”

The scouts begin working on their cars in early December and can work on them from home or with the help of the troop leaders who bring out saws, sanders and paint for three derby car workshops in January. The scouts come up with their own unique design and then draw, cut, paint and assemble their pinewood cars.

“We try and teach them that it’s not about winning. It’s about having fun and supporting your buddies. Not everyone wins a trophy,” LoMonaco said. “Do your best.

That’s the cub scout motto and that’s all we expect from them.”

Edamame-Black Bean Salad with Honey-Lime Dressing

Hey, baby!

CHEF RANDY RANDY GRAHAM This is an all-purpose spicy honey-lime salad dressing – perfect for a tasty springtime salad. I’ve included a vegan edamame salad recipe, but you can also substitute plain romaine lettuce leaves or your favorite combination of salad ingredients instead of the edamame.

Dressing ingredients:

¼ cup fresh lime juice ¼ cup vegetable oil 2 tablespoons honey 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro (chopped fine) 1 garlic clove (minced) 1 small jalapeño pepper (chopped fine)

Edamame salad ingredients:

2 cups fresh shelled edamame 1½ cups fresh corn 1 cup black beans (rinsed and drained from a 15-ounce can) 1 avocado (cut into ½-inch pieces) ¼ cup red bell pepper (chopped) Salt and pepper to taste

Edamame salad directions:

Combine all ingredients except for the avocado pieces. Stir well. Add the

avocados, being careful not to mash them, while stirring into the rest of the salad.

Serving directions:

Combine all dressing ingredients in a blender and blend for about 60 seconds (or until smooth). Pour over salad ingredients and chill for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Harbor seals are efficient and graceful swimmers, with streamlined bodies and powerful rear flippers for propulsion. Front flippers are used for steering. They can reach speeds up to 12 mph and stay under as long as 30 minutes. Most foraging is done at fairly shallow depths, but a study in Greenland recorded a seal diving 2,050 feet deep.

Disturbances

The seals fled to the ocean three times, frightened by a sonic boom, pier vehicle noise and two jet skiers. A transient had been reportedly camping at a local church for the last few days and refused to leave. He left prior to law enforcement’s arrival.

A vehicle was observed with tinted windows and inoperable lighting equipment. It was speeding on the Highway 101 southbound through Carpinteria.

The vehicle stopped near the Bates southbound off-ramp. The driver consented to a search of his vehicle and suspected meth, a meth pipe, and an open alcoholic beverage were located.

He was cited and released to a friend.

The suspect and victim were having a verbal argument. Upon investigation, it was discovered that the suspect had violated a restraining order. The victim also had injuries resulting from the suspect throwing a phone at the victim, pinching him and punching him. The suspect was arrested.

2352 hrs / Narcotics Violation / 1100 block Casitas Pass Road

A known parolee was observed exiting the bathroom of a local restroom, and when he saw deputies, he turned and walked back into the bathroom towards the stall. Based on his prior contacts, he was detained, and a usable amount of heroin was found on his person during a search.

Sealwatchers arriving in the morning have seen footprints left early in the morning or at night, one possible reason adult seal counts have been low this season.

During a traffic enforcement stop, it was discovered the passenger had an outstanding warrant for her arrest.

She was arrested for her warrant and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail. During the booking process at jail, a methamphetamine pipe with a usable amount was located in her property. Additional charges were filed against her.

Greatness in a surfing life

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH Two notable occurrences happened on the North Shore last week: Kelly Slater won his eighth Pipeline pro contest one-week shy of his 50th birthday and 30 years after his first victory there; and Peter Cole passed away at 91. Kelly, of course, is competitive surfing’s GOAT, the “greatest of all time,” while Mr. Cole was a member of the pioneer generation of California surfers who began pushing big-wave riding on the North Shore in the 1950s.

Cole was fond of Kelly Slater he told me one afternoon at his house at Rocky Point, with a view out to his beloved wave at Sunset Beach. I was on the North Shore for a magazine assignment and had gotten Peter’s number from my Dad, as they were friends from those early Malibu days. What he appreciated about Slater, in addition to Slater’s otherworldly talent, was that he is a thoughtful person and has concerns that go beyond just surfing.

That was always Peter Cole’s defining characteristic as well—his interests and work that took him from the lineup even though he’d built a life on a foundation of surfing. He was famous for saying that surfers needed to have “real jobs” to enjoy a long surfing life, otherwise they would burn out on the narrow focus of waves alone. His careers as a high school teacher, then as a civilian employee of the U.S. Navy, pulled him from the beach but he nevertheless made an impact on surf culture, spanning generations of surfers from Duke Kahanamoku to Eddie Aikau and through the emergence of professional surfing in the late 1970s and on to Kelly Slater’s long tenure on the North Shore.

On the afternoon I visited, Peter showed me a painting he’d done from the perspective of dropping in on a big wave on the West Peak at Sunset. It was the work of a solid amateur, with somewhat clunky brush strokes and big globs of paint (not to take anything away from this man I so greatly admired). But technical critiques of the painting aside, he captured that acrophobic moment in big wave surfing when the bottom is so far down that popping to one’s feet goes against every rational instinct. Yet he’d done it year after year, since before there were barely any others doing it, and day job or not, that painting made it clear that the artist behind it had been transformed by the experience.

And there is a way of being that many of the people of their generation had, that was a touch more reserved than a lot of us are today, and less entitled. The war was literally won for them, and they seemed to appreciate it.

Paumalu is the Hawaiian name for the place now called Sunset Beach, and it is revered in Hawaiian tradition as the site of historical feats of surfing prowess. Early Hawaiian surfers rode long wooden olos, or shorter, thin planks called alias.

When he moved to Oahu, Peter’s boards would have been from one of the West Coast shapers, perhaps Hap Jacobs or Dale Velzy. I like to think he would have eventually had a Pat Curren gun, since Pat was over there in those early years, and his balsa boards were perfect. I also love to imagine him on one of George Downing’s sleek spears too. He definitely got boards from Dick Brewer and Owl Chapman, and those are the ones I know he rode well into his 60s at Sunset and Waimea – beautifully foiled single fins, thick enough to knee paddle, but with a high-aspect ratio “modern” fin, vee panels and clean rocker for the long, projecting turns that Sunset requires.

Respected as an elder on the North Shore, Peter led the community in opposition to proposed shopping mall developments. “Keep the country country,” is the ubiquitous bumper sticker associated with the movement and is as much a testament to North Shore values as the slogan “Eddie would go,” honoring Aikau’s ocean heroics. Peter’s surfing was no frills, the majesty in it having more to do with his chosen surf spot of Sunset Beach than with any particular maneuvers. His surfing was also about poise, his ability to position himself in the hook of grinding waves and simply ride them out in an upright stance. And this somehow reflects the poise with which he seemed to live the rest of his life, too.

Carpinteria’s girls water polo team has made it through the whirlwind end of the regular season winning nine out of 10 games played over the last two weeks, including a big victory over Santa Paula on Senior Day. The Warriors are now headed to the CIF Girls Water Polo Division 4 Playoffs after finishing with a 16-5 overall record and an undefeated 8-0 in Citrus Coast League play.

The closing week of the regular season started with the final home game against Santa Paula, and a chance to celebrate the team’s core group of seniors: Sydney McKaskey, Jocelyn Peña, Piper Clayton, Briana Rodriguez, Natalia Perez, Madison Mora, Serena Smith and Alondra Badillo. One of Warrior’s top players of the first half of the season, Alex Zapata, who graduated early in December to relocate, also sent an inspirational message that was read for her former teammates. Carpinteria started seniors at every position in the pool.

Briana Rodriguez represented well for the senior class, exploding for seven goals on her own in the 18-9 victory. Seniors Piper Clayton, Natalia Perez and Jocelyn Peña also pitched in with a combined eight goals.

Carpinteria was hoping to carry the Senior Day momentum – and an eightgame win streak – into their next match two days later against Villanova Prep.

After a tough battle, the Warriors were unable to hold off Villanova’s top player, Tijana Roncevic, who scored seven out of the teams ten goals, including two fourth

quarter scores that pushed the game out of reach for Carpinteria. The 7-10 loss was the Warrior’s first loss since Jan. 17.

“Although (we) took a loss, the starting unit was put to a tough challenge and will have some time to make appropriate adjustments before their first CIF playoff game,’’ said coach Jon Otsuki.

Those adjustments started the next day, as Carpinteria took its 7-0 Citrus Coast League record to FIllmore for one final match. The Warriors came out swinging, with six first quarter goals, and finished just as strong with seven goals in the final stanza.

Three juniors led the scoring in the 19-6 win over Fillmore, with Jada Priess finding the back of the net four times, Sophie Olvera scoring three goals, and Monica Delgado adding a pair of goals.

At least 10 Carpinteria players scored in the game.

With the 19-6 win, Carpinteria finished the season at 8-0 in league play, and will carry that momentum into a first-round matchup against Santa Ynez, who were the only team that was able to beat the Warriors in both of their regular season matchups – by one goal each time. On Dec. 9, the Warriors fell 11-12, while on Jan. 17, they came short again for a final score of 8-9.

With a win over Santa Ynez in the first round, Carpinteria will head to El Segundo on Thursday to face the top seed in the second round of the Division 4 playoffs.

Warriors reach second round of CIF

Carpinteria faced Santa Ynez for the third time this year in the first round of the CIF playoffs, and were able to finally defeat the one team that eluded them all year to advance to the second round. Santa Ynez beat Carpinteria in both of their regular season matchups by one goal each time, and the back and forth battle continued, this time with the Warriors coming out on top 8-7.

Carpinteria will now face top-seeded El Segundo on Thursday in a win-orgo-home showdown.

Cate’s CIF Champs get a visit from Super Bowl MVP

Eight-time Pro Bowler, Super Bowl 50 MVP, and current Los Angeles Rams star linebacker Von Miller took time from preparing for his next Super Bowl to visit Cate School to hang out with the 2021 CIF Championship football team and celebrate Black History Month.

Less than two days after winning the NFC Championship game and earning another trip to the Super Bowl, the star NFL linebacker answered questions about his life and career during a one-on-one interview with Cate junior Carlo Kim. Miller opened up about his midseason trade from the Denver Broncos to the Rams, his work ethic and inspiration from Kobe Bryant, and being one of the last players ever to sack the recently retired Tom Brady.

Kyle Mason, Cate’s Director of Outreach & Recruitment and Head Track & Field Coach, helped organize the event with the Kim family and spoke about the excitement of having the future Hall of Famer on campus.

“We are honored and blessed to have him open our Black History Month this year as we celebrate Black Joy at Cate School,” Mason said. “He has affected change on so many levels beyond football and does so much more than what we know him for.”

Miller, who has overcome lifelong vision and asthma problems to reach the highest level of his sport, founded the organization Von’s Vision, with a mission to provide low-income students with the eye care they need to be their best in the classroom and in life.

“I started out trying to help one or two children, and now we have raised millions of dollars in eyewear,” Miller said. “It’s an honor and a privilege to start Von’s Vision and for it to have the type of impact that it has.”

He also took a photo with members of the Cate football team, also nicknamed the Rams, who won the School’s first-ever CIF Division I 8-Man Football Championship in November.

Carpinteria girls basketball finishes tough year

The Warriors girls hoops team closed out their 2021-2022 campaign at 2-17 overall, and 0-10 in Citrus Coast League play after a final week with three tough losses against Malibu, Santa Paula and Nordhoff.

Carpinteria started the week with a road loss at Malibu, 25-46. Coach Henry Gonzales said the team had a hard time getting going, and couldn’t keep up after falling behind early.

For Senior Day, Carpinteria celebrated Nancy Pantaleon and Quetzemany Arce before hosting Santa Paula for one last home game of the year. Though the Warriors lost 23-45, coach Gonzales said the team played with”tremendous effort and competitiveness,” led by eight points from Scarlet Torres.

“I was happy that we played hard to the very end,” he said. “Our defense was good and aggressive.“ The Warriors closed out the year with the final regular season game on the road at Nordhoff. Carpinteria struggled to get shots to fall early and were shutout 0-11 in the first quarter. Torres scored eight and Amarisse Camargo scored 10 in the 25-37 loss.

Warriors boys basketball falls to Fillmore

After picking up two wins last week, Carpinteria’s boys basketball team finished its season with a final game on the road against Fillmore.

Kainoa Glasgow Scored 26 points, and senior Matt Garcia scored 15 in the 48-55 loss.

Carpinteria finishes the season 2-5 in league play. Garcia, Hanan Soicher, Bryan Alpizar and Jared Zapata were the team’s graduating seniors.

Carpinteria soccer season wrap-up

The Warriors boys and girls soccer teams battled through Covid complications and tough losses this year, but both were able to find some success to end their seasons on a high note.

After losing to Hueneme 0-2, the boys finished the year with “a game to remember” for the team’s seniors, said coach Leo Quintero, as four-year varsity forward Steven Zermeño hit a game-winning power shot to claim the victory over Malibu at home at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium.

“Steven has been a staple and key member of the varsity program since his freshman year,” Quintero said, “and to see him score the eventual game-winning goal was fitting for his work and sacrifice he has displayed over his career at Carpinteria.

It was a well deserved send off for Zermeño as he will be truly missed next season.”

Zermeño, Marcos Dominguez, Leo Alaniz, Brian Garcia, Angel Velazquez, Yenson, Ramirez, Jonathan Esquivel, Brian Mendoza, , Aaron Cardona and Daniel Peña are the team’s graduating seniors.

“Excited to see the team win at home in the season finale and also excited for the future of Warrior Soccer considering the talent that is developing here in Carpinteria,” Quintero said.

With the win, Carpinteria finishes the season 2-6-2 in the Citrus Coast League.

The girls soccer team won two out of their last three games, including back-toback- wins against Beacon Hill and Hueneme on consecutive days.

The Beacon Hill victory was an emphatic 3-0 win on Senior Night, where the team celebrated its senior class: Karen Gamez, Riley Wrought, Kate Cooney and Jaque Aguirre.

Cooney put the elevation point on her career with one final goal, and Renata Martinez and standout Ashley Verduzco also scored in the win. “Tonight was a celebration of our seniors and what they have helped me start here at Carpinteria,” said coach Freddy Martinez.

The next day, the Warriors followed up the Beacon Hill win with a 1-0 victory on the road over Hueneme. Verduzco scored the deciding goal, as the Warriors picked up their first league win of the year.

They closed out the season with a loss against Malibu, and finished with a 4-12-2 overall record, and a 1-8-1 league record.

The Masons provided generous prize money: $350 for first place, $250 for second place and $150 for third place. The CMS winners will compete at the Santa Barbara County Spelling Bee on Feb. 17.

Following national trends, California Department of Education reports limited progress in assessment scores for the 2020-21 school year when compared to pre-pandemic results.

Lower participation rates also make data comparisons invalid. In California, 49% of students met or exceeded English Language Arts standard and only about a third, or 34%, succeeded in math. A widening achievement gap between student subgroups was also noted. It was predicted that the pandemic would have a drastic effect on student performance.

Congressman Carbajal at CHS

Last Friday night, Congressman Salud Carbajal presented a U.S. Flag to the District that will be flown in the new gym.

This flag was flown atop the U.S. Capital in Washington D.C. on Nov. 17, 2021 on behalf of the Carpinteria Warriors.

During his brief remarks, Congressman Carbajal also celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Title IX legislation, which barred discrimination in education based on gender.

Mental health services

The CUSD Mental Health Team has planned for the District’s first Depression/Suicide Screening for 7th and 9th grade students over the mid two weeks of February 2022. The screenings will help create a safety network in our school community, so that students thinking of suicide are identified early on and kept safe.

Additionally, the California Depart-

ment of Education (CDE) and San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) have partnered with LivingWorks to provide free online suicide prevention training (LivingWorks Start) to all middle and high school leaders, teachers, staff and students. LivingWorks Start is a 90-minute online training program that equips people with the skills and confidence to recognize and respond when someone is thinking of suicide and help to keep them safe. The faculty and staff at Carpinteria Middle School and Carpinteria High School will be receiving the LivingWorks Start online training for suicide prevention training during January and February 2022. They already received some training in December 2021.

Summerland School continues to pour concrete for footings and retaining walls.

The first steel post has been bolted in place for the lower classrooms. The Summerland site is now past any soils issues, and construction has begun.

The Carpinteria High School Administration building continues lathe placement for stucco and rock is going on the new roof.

The last phase of Canalino modernization project will begin this summer and continue into summer of 2023.

The Main School project is being prepared to go to bid for a LLB contractor, with plans to begin work this summer.

All projects have materials delays, which impact the schedule of work.
