Jameson Lake spills over dam, first time since 2011

Montecito’s Jameson Lake received an additional 1.63 inches on Feb. 3, causing Juncal Dam to spill this morning at approximately 4:30 a.m. Spilling for the first time since 2011, the lake is now at 100 percent capacity, approximately 5,144 acre-feet with its storage elevation of 2,223.87 feet.

No major system damage was identified after the storm on Feb. 2, as Montecito Water District’s field crews worked from dawn until dark inspecting pipelines and other critical infrastructure. For additional information and updates visit montecitowater.com.

Relay for Life to hold informational meeting

Relay for Life of Coastal Santa Barbara County is the American Cancer Society’s community effort to end cancer. For 11 years Carpintarians have joined together to raise funds to fight back against a disease that affects all of us. Whether you have a family member, a neighbor, or just an acquaintance, every one of us knows about cancer.

This year the Relay for Life will be held on July 20 at Aliso Elementary School beginning at 9 a.m. and the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. Local bands will play all day at the Relay, accompanying anyone there to listen, walk, run or dance around the track. There will be a Jolly Jump, playground equipment, and arts and crafts for kids.

The event is free, but donations are welcome. On Saturday night, the Relay’s HOPE sign will light up on the top of Franklin Trail. Sunday morning, at the end of Linden, there will be a special Paddle Out for Hope. Community members are encouraged to bring boards and participate in the closing ceremony.

California HOPE 805 is offering free support every Thursday from Feb. 28 to March 28 at CarpConnect. Drop-in services such as community resource referrals and crisis counseling will be offered from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., and community conversations will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Community conversation topics include, stress management, community reactions to natural disasters and coping skills. Cannabis Compliance Team eradicates illegal local cannabis operation CVN RePORT On Jan. 31, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Cannabis Compliance Team concluded a four-month investigation into a local cannabis cultivator, operating under the name of Power Farms LLC, which is located at 1530 Casitas Pass Rd. just outside the City of Carpinteria. During the investigation, which spanned two counties and involved three separate search warrants, detectives discovered one of the owners, whose name is being withheld due to the ongoing investigation, had provided false information during the county cannabis application process and was failing to follow proper shipping and manifest procedures. The owners’ Los Angeles County home was served with a search warrant. There, detectives seized several unregistered firearms, two of which were reported stolen, as well as approximately 60 pounds of processed and packaged marijuana taken from Power Farms. They also seized thousands of dol-

lars in cash and other items of evidence.

The investigation culminated in the voluntary surrender of the owner ’s state temporary cannabis license, which resulted in detectives from the Cannabis Compliance Team, Special Investigations Bureau, District Attorney’s Office and Game Wardens from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, eradicating and removing illegal cannabis from Power Farms as they no longer had a valid state permit to cultivate or possess commercial cannabis. Approximately 22,420 cannabis plants were eradicated from three separate greenhouses and approximately 1,420 pounds of dried/ drying cannabis were seized.

The Santa Barbara County Cannabis Compliance Team was founded in June of 2018 and consists of personnel from many disciplines within a variety of county departments. The team primarily focuses on unlicensed and illegal cannabis operations within the county and the safety of the public.

The owner of Power Farms LLC at 1530 Casitas Pass Rd. was operating without the proper state permits for cannabis cultivation resulting in the seizure of approximately 1,420 pounds of dried/drying cannabis.

City places shoreline-compatible sediment on the beach at Ash Avenue

For over 50 years the debris basins protecting Montecito and Carpinteria have served well to mostly prevent urban flooding and debris flows. However, there is an unintended consequence of starving the coastline of its natural supply of mineral sediments like sand, gravel and cobble, according to Matthew Roberts, director of City Parks and Recreation. “Unlike beaches in less mountainous areas,” explained Roberts, “our coastline should naturally have a steady Matthew Roberts is captured on a supply of coarse sediments. When you attend an athletic event that involves your son or daughter, cheer to your heart’s content, enjoy the camaraderie that high school sports offer and have fun. But when it comes to verbally criticizing game officials or coaches, cool it.

Make no mistake about it. Your passion is admired, and your support of the hometown team is needed. But so is your self-control. Yelling, screaming and berating the officials humiliates your child, annoys those sitting around you, embarrasses your child’s school and is the primary reason California has an alarming shortage of high school officials.

It’s true. According to a recent survey by the National Association of Sports Officials, more than 75 percent of all high school officials say “adult behavior” is the primary reason they quit. And 80 percent of all young officials hang up their stripes after just two years of

If there are no officials, there are no games. The shortage of licensed high school officials is severe enough in some areas that athletic events are being postponed or cancelled— especially at the freshman and junior varsity levels.

Addressing the lure of technology for youth

We love the immediate access to information and the ability to quickly text a friend. But we dislike when we’re driving and everyone else in the car is absorbed on their devices, or when we’re talking with someone who constantly checks their phone.

It is even more of a challenge when we are responsible for youth who use technology. We find ourselves asking: How can we can best support our children as they grow up in a world immersed in technology?

Research proves that new technology can be highly addictive, and that young people spend an inordinate amount of time using it. Studies have detailed the rush of pleasure that the chemical dopamine provides kids when they win a game or get likes or hearts on items they post.

Most of us worry about how to deal with our children’s use of social media and gaming. As specialist Alia Aizenstat said at a recent local workshop about teens and the digital world, organized by the Mental Wellness Center, Family Service Agency and YouthWell, most parents experience confusion, fear, concern, love and caring all at the same time.

Aizenstat felt it important that parents understand the power exerted on our kids by the fear of missing out, which drives much of a young person’s online behavior. It’s the sense that exciting things are happening constantly and if they’re not online they will miss it. Or a friend might be upset if a message isn’t acknowledged right away. It can cause stress, anxiety, depression and, ironically, add to a sense of loneliness.

In establishing family behaviors to deal with these dilemmas, it’s important that adults serve as role models with their own use of devices, by putting the phone away when talking earnestly to each other, or when the family is having a meal together.

It can also be helpful to make sure that there is no technology in a child’s

bedroom overnight. Technology could be available in the living room or other public area, but not in the privacy of a child’s room. That limits screen time and makes sure that parents can monitor content.

Some families have also found it helpful to have a charging station in a shared space, with adults also limited to that area for charging. It’s also helpful to set boundaries early so they are established as family expectations and not seen as a punishment.

Dr. Dan Brennan recently wrote a Noozhawk article reminding parents that oversight of social media is essential.

Adults provide their child’s phone, and have the parental right to access their children’s social media and phone content.

Brennan also urged us to remind our children that their social media footprint will last forever, and things they “like” today could prove problematic when applying to a college or a job. Creating a phone-free weekend or taking an afternoon hike where there is no phone reception will also help clear everyone’s minds, including the adults.

Technology tends to foster a sense of urgency in all of us to react immediately to messages we receive. Let’s try to show our children by our own example that patience remains a virtue and that direct human interactions are the most valuable and effective form of communication.

I appreciate expert research on the effects of technology on teens. As a parent, it helps me consider how we might apply these principles with our family. I also appreciate talking with others responsible for children as they deal with technology—many have great advice, and almost all seem to share common concerns.

If we set priorities early, and as a family unit, it can help us control our technology, rather than having it take us over.

Let’s educate our children about ways to use technology safely, set boundaries that work for our households, and model interactions with one another that put people, not technology, first.

Cannabis supporters and critics spar at County Board of Supervisors meeting

Santa Barbara residents made their voices heard at the heavily-attended Jan. 29 meeting of the County Board of Supervisors that saw a 4-0 vote (with Supervisor Peter Adam absent), approving several modifications of county regulatory policy on cannabis cultivation and operations.

Supporters and critics of the region’s growing cannabis industry offered passionate testimony regarding various issues: the severity of county enforcement policies; the effect of large operations on the local wine industry and wine-tasting experience; fears of heightened criminal activity and lessened property values; and the vexed issue of effective odor control.

The cannabis industry in Santa Barbara County has boomed in the just-over two years since Proposition 64 passed, legalizing the cultivation of marijuana for recreational sale in California. Nearly 2,200 temporary permits have been issued to some 100 cultivators, a number that exceeds that of any other county in the state.

While this has given a significant boost to local economic activity, many residents requested a strict moratorium on the issuance of new permits, expressing fear that the runaway growth has come with its own costs.

Members of the group Concerned Carpinterians turned out in force, sporting red tops with clothespins attached to dramatize their concerns about the powerful smells emanating from some local greenhouses. Many spoke to fears of increased crime, whether by cannabis industry professionals or from their customers. Others noted their concern over a possible (though unproven) decline in residential property values due to proximity to growing operations and the strong aromas which emanate from them.

“Pot stinks, and we’re mad as hell,” said Foothill Road resident and Carpinteria Unified School District Trustee Maureen Foley Claffey during her public comment.

An equally determined contingent of local industry figures spoke as well, noting the high cost of the permit application process, which can cost up to $200,000, and defending the vast majority of growers who are dedicated to respecting the permitting process, and eager to be in compliance with state and county regulations. “We understand remaining community concerns about odor in Carpinteria Valley,” said Mike Palmer CARP Growers board member, to the Supervisors and public. “Our association is committed to operating at the highest standards, including best available odor control technology. As we’ve discussed before, we’ve gone through several iterations of odor control and now have arrived at the best available technology in vapor-phase odor abatement.”

I say let our farmers grow cannabis and let our farmers follow your rules. Our farmers are good responsible citizens.”

Santa Barbara viticulturalists though spoke against the current state of cannabis cultivation activities in wine country, claiming that cannabis odors were steering customers away from wine-tasting experiences. “To taste wine, people have to be able to smell it,” said Alison Laslett from Santa Barbara Vintners. Tempers grew so heated that wine-grower William “Bubba” Hines was escorted from the hearing, though not before using an anatomical expletive to describe John De Friel, a local cannabis grower and member of the Santa Barbara Agricultural Advisory Committee.

First District Supervisor Das Williams, a long-time supporter of the local agricultural economy, drew especially heated criticism from Carpinteria resident Peter

Lapidus, who characterized Williams, also a Carpinteria resident, as a “sellout.” Lapidus’ criticism came despite Williams’ reiteration that odor-abatement regulations cannot take full effect until the completion of the permitting process.

Williams returned fire in the contentious exchange, describing Lapidus’ sales from his family’s well as, “taking water out of the Carpinteria Valley to give it to rich people in Montecito.”

Williams’ measured support of the cannabis industry was matched by the rest of the Board, which joined him in voting 4-0 on several modifications of county regulatory policy, including the lifting of Live Scan background check requirements for some low-level cannabis employees, but retaining the mandate that all owners and managers of such enterprises complete the full screening process. Supervisors also directed county staff to present proposals for banning cultivation on smaller AG-1 (zoned for agriculture) properties.

Executive Officer Dennis Bozanich recounted the county’s record of enforcement, including the massive recent seizure at Casitas Pass Road, which destroyed over 22,400 plants. enforcement actions have been launched against 20 operators for cultivating without proper permits or for exceeding their allowed capacity. Bozanich argued against the adoption of a strict moratorium, saying, “if we go that route... that takes time,” noting the protracted process for both Coastal Commission and Board of Supervisors approval. He urged cannabis growers to take immediate steps to seek permit approval. With temporary permits for cannabis industry operators expiring in March, “You’re either in the boat or not in the boat,” said Bozanich. Those growers still operating in April will face the full force of county enforcement and could find their operations shut down entirely, stated Bozanich.

City releases draft of Sea Level Rise Adaptation Plan, invites public to contribute opinion

The City has dismissed the do nothing approach, and is actively pursuing a hybrid strategy that combines protect, accommodate and retreat strategies.

Oil update

Summerland beach is still regularly bathed by oil sheen, tarry blobs and tide lines smeared with degraded petroleum.

This is Summerland’s legacy from the century-old oil wells drilled into the beach by long-gone oil companies. In an encouraging sign of progress, Steve Curran, petroleum engineer with the California State Lands Commission, visited the beach on Jan. 20.

A special area of concern is the popular beach just below Lookout Park where several leaks have been located. The purpose of Curran’s visit was to scope the area at low tide. He met with Hillary Houser of Heal the Ocean and other interested parties to discuss project possibilities.

Later Curran met with State Representative Hannah Beth Jackson to seek her help in securing funding for State Lands to remediate the two, and possibly three, leaky wells identified below Lookout and farther down the beach.

State Lands plans to use the drone photos provided by Harry Rabin/On the Wave Productions as a guide to locating the underwater wells prior to construction. They will then contract with Aqueos Ventura for a dive survey to pinpoint exact locations.

Letter Perfect’s gallery shows

Letter Perfect, the lively enterprise occupying the former Just Folk building, has been busy staging benefit art shows in the light-filled upstairs gallery. December’s show featuring local landscapes raised money for Heal the Ocean.

January was Human and Sex Trafficking Awareness month, and the benefit, with works by all women artists, raised money to help fund local efforts to counteract the sex trafficking of children. Santa Barbara District Attorney Joyce Dudley spoke at the gallery opening, along with representatives from the Junior League, which is funding a SAFE house (Saving At-Risk Youth from Exploitation).

Dudley stated that Santa Barbara is a “hub” for commercial sexual exploitation. Lying along a corridor from San Francisco to Los Angeles, its affluence, tourism, high-end hotels and transient population make it a destination city for sex traffickers.

A human trafficking task force created in 2013 connects all agencies involved in the effort to deal with the growing and horrendous problem of sex slavery, including the DA’s office, the sheriff’s department, probation, juvenile justice and others. The Junior League, through

I spoke with Kiele Horton, President of the League, and learned that the league has vigorously embraced its role in helping children subjected to the abuse of sex slavery. In the spring of 2017, the league opened the SAFE house, the only residential program for minors in the county.

With an emphasis on “safe,” the home is “warm, comfortable and inviting.” It currently houses six girls, ages 12 to 17, offering rehabilitative therapy to help them overcome the terrors of sexual bondage and transition back into normal society.

According to Letter Perfect’s Leslie Person, the gallery show successfully raised money to support the SAFE house and the Victim Witness Emergency Fund.

It turns out that Letter Perfect is so much more than paper and stationery, although for lovers of all things involving writing like me, it’s a very cool shop. The store also stocks Summerland themed napkins, placemats, coasters, calendars and even T-shirts. Person’s aim, she told me, is to “give Summerland a wonderful and pleasing place to shop that isn’t too expensive but is community minded.”

Car burglaries

Thieves regularly troll the night-time streets of Summerland rifling through cars and making off with anything worthwhile. We never used to lock our cars since there was nothing valuable in them. Frustrated by finding nothing in my car one time, a bandit made off with my petite-size workout gloves. Probably snatched out of sheer frustration.

Got a notice from Next Door Summerland last week that the cars in her apartment building on Banner had been broken into. It was already night, but okay, time to make sure the cars were

locked. So, Roger went out and locked his ancient Rav. I guess the cat burglar had already struck because the next day we found the glove box open and Roger’s backpack gone. Strangely, a brand new blue cross-over bag from Patagonia was left in its place.

We figured the thief must have left the blue bag behind because it didn’t hold enough of his loot and had taken the backpack for that purpose. Nothing in that backpack, which Roger used for the gym, just a bathing suit, swim goggles,

some toiletries. Anyone’s car missing a nice blue Patagonia bag?

Lock your cars! Criminals are afoot in your community.

One good thing: Rain dimpled sand on beaches.

Lou Grant Valentine’s day workshop

Sea Level Rise Adaptation Plan workshop

The City of Carpinteria will hold a Sea Level Rise Adaptation Plan workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Carpinteria Children’s Project Auditorium, 5201 8th St. The workshop will focus on findings from the recently completed draft Adaption Plan, and attendees will be invited to share their input on adaptation priorities.

The Alcazar Theatre, 4916 Carpinteria Ave., will present John McEuen and the String Wizards on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. When McEuen initiated the “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” album with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, he brought the icons of Bluegrass, Country and West Coast country rock together: Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, Roy Acuff, Vassar Clements and Maybelle Carter.

There is no shortage of teachers who go above and beyond for their students in Carpinteria Unified School District. Each year, two teachers are honored by school leadership, their peers and the community with the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce Educator of the Year Award. This year, the awardees are Aliso Elementary School fifth-grade teacher Ryan Francisco and Carpinteria Middle School eighth-grade American Studies teacher John Fowler.

“John Fowler is dedicated to learning how to help students navigate the often-tumultuous years of middle school,” said Carpinteria Middle School Principal Lisa O’Shea. Fowler teaches American Studies and Global Studies and directs the Associated Student Body (ASB) at CMS. “He revels in helping students connect and make meaning with our collective past,” said O’Shea. As the ASB guide, Fowler helps students learn to enact positive changes in school culture. Throughout his activities at CMS, Fowler strives to help students build social-emotional competencies necessary for building healthy relationships and life-long learning.

How does it feel to be Educator of the Year?

John Fowler: It is both humbling and exhilarating to be acknowledged working in the midst of so many dedicated and outstanding teachers in our school district.

What is your greatest motivation as a teacher?

Fowler: To help in planting the seeds for greater self-awareness and life-long learning in our youth.

What do you think students need most?

Fowler: Students need parents/guardians, caring adults who are thoroughly engaged in guiding them through what is often the “tumultuous” transition of middle school.

Students learn best only when their essential needs have been met. When they are rested and fed, actively feeling the benefits of safety and a sense of belonging in their community—then they can move on to the daunting and adventurous path of learning.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of teaching?

Fowler: Working with a purpose that transcends my own personal well-being feels good. knowing I am providing guidance in learning “how to learn”—something students appear to really need—is both rewarding and a powerful incentive for learning how to provide the best guidance I can.

“What makes Ryan (Francisco) an exceptional teacher is his collaborative nature, awareness of new strategies, ability to network, and teaching skills that help reach all students,” said Aliso Principal Dr. Michelle Fox. “He is always the first one to say, ‘Okay, let’s try it’ when a new idea is presented, or ‘Hey, I have an idea…’ Francisco’s enthusiasm and forward-thinking approach has driven him to complete a Master of Science in Instructional Technology and to network extensively throughout California, making connections with educators, businesses and community leaders. Through this network and spirit of collaboration, Francisco has brought robots and a 3-D printer into his classroom, provided fifth-grade students with hydroponics materials, and launched a new after school club focused on team building and STEAM (Science, Technology, Enginearing, Art and Math).

Ryan Francisco: I feel very honored to have been named Educator of the Year. CUSD is fortunate to have so many talented and dedicated educators and I am very grateful to be a part of the team.

Francisco: My greatest motivation as a teacher is finding new and innovative ways to inspire students’ motivation and perspectives for learning.

Francisco: I feel what students need most—and deserve—is an education

Francisco: The most rewarding aspect of teaching for me is when students find a personal inspiration in a simple assignment or project and go above and beyond in making it their own. It’s always great getting emails from students, proud

A series of winter storms—from Thursday, Jan. 31, to Monday, Feb. 4— prompted evacuation orders for those living below burn scar areas over the weekend and closed Highways 101 and 154 due to flooding. Warriors take first win in playoff run

The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team opened up their defense of last year’s CIF-SS Division-Six title and state title, taking on Santa Ynez on Tuesday, Feb. 5, in a Wildcard matchup with the odds stacked against them. Not only had the Warriors lost to the Pirates earlier in the season by a score of 5-2, the match originally scheduled for Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium was moved to San Marcos because of wet field conditions, and the game played on artificial turf— the same as Santa Ynez’s home pitch. But the Warriors overcame the odds, scoring a goal in the first half and holding on for a 1-0 victory to advance to the first round of the Division-Four playoffs.

“I think it was a chip on the shoulder for these guys to have, and to come out here tonight in a playoff atmosphere… over the years, defense has been our foundation…,” said Carpinteria coach Leo Quintero of his team’s motivation to shut down the Channel League team’s attack. The Warriors dictated the play from the start, keeping the ball at the Pirates’ end. Around the 15-minute mark, Mario Jimenez’ cross to Jose Jimenez nearly led to a goal, but Santa Ynez goalkeeper Juan Sanchez fielded the skidding low shot to keep the game scoreless.

But near the 19-minute mark Eddie Mendoza scored what would be the winning a goal. His blast from 35 yards out skimmed the inside of the crossbar into the back of the net to put the Warriors up 1-0. Mendoza also played a key role in preserving the lead before the end of the half, blocking a shot in front of the goal after goalkeeper Adrian Gonzalez, com-

ing off his line, was unable to secure the ball. “He’s (Mendoza) a double threat …, he’s the type of player you can’t replace,” said Quintero of his senior standout.

The Pirates came out on the attack in the second half and had a great opportunity in the 43rd minute when a dangerous cross near the goal line went through the area but missed the foot of a charging Pirate. In the 52nd minute, Luis Gonzalez’s shot from a few yards out hit the post to keep the game at 1-0.

The Warriors countered with a couple opportunities of their own. A long throw-in

by Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson at the 54-minute mark made it to the front of the goal box, but twin brother Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson couldn’t get a foot on it. And a minute later, Mendoza drilled another free kick that bounced off the bar, going over the goal.

Carpinteria’s defense withstood a last flurry in the final 9 minutes, with the goalkeeper Gonzalez making a save in the 71st minute. A shot by Sam Villa a few minutes later from close range hit the side of the net. “They had plenty of opportunities, and our guys responded to the challenge,” explained Quintero.

It was the fifth consecutive win for the Warriors. “Our guys in the second half of league (Citrus Coast) play have really lasered-in on what needs to be done,” said Quintero. “I think we were a little bit distracted the first five games …”

The team started off league play, 1-2-2.

The Warriors (9-7-3) move on to play on the road against Valencia (9-1-8) on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 5 p.m.

The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team plays their first playoff game of the season in the Warrior Gym, 4810 Foothill Rd., on Friday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. Finishing in second place in the newly formed Citrus Coast League, the warriors earned a 7-3 record in league play and 12-13 overall. The team’s new head coach Corey Adam said that he has enjoyed a great year directing his hard-working players, and support from the community will help propel the varsity squad to victory.

January 30 – The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team lost their final game on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2-0 to Santa Paula in a Citrus Coast League matchup. “In tonight’s game, I thought our keeper Isabel Studt had a solid evening, as did our center-midfielder Yaneli Silva,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Carpinteria will lose seven seniors from this year’s squad: four-year starters Emmelly Santillan and Yaneli Silva, three-year starter, Kendra Meza along with Yael Martinez, Jasmyn Arroyo, Alyssa Rodriguez and Isabel Studt. The Warriors will not be making the playoffs for the first time in six years. Carpinteria finishes the season 2-17-2 overall and 0-9-1 in the Citrus Coast League. “I was happy with how our team never gave up this season, we fought night in and night out and that shows the character of this squad,” said Bryant.

January 30 – With playoff hopes on the line the Carpinteria High School boys soccer team responded to the challenge and beat Santa Paula 4-0 at home. Jose Jimenez scored from 25 yards out in the second minute of the game. Five minutes later, Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson made it 2-0 when he split a couple of defenders after receiving a pass from Mario Jimenez for the score. In the 55th minute Luke was awarded a penalty kick after being fouled inside the area.

Edgar Mendoza converted the kick to go up 3-0. In the 79th minute, Mendoza served up a free kick into the box and recently brought-up JV player Isaac Benitez knocked it past the Cardinal keeper. Carpinteria will wait to find out their playoff seeding which will be determined by a coin flip between the Warriors and Fillmore for the second and/or third slot.

Girls water polo

January 30 – The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team beat crosstown rival Cate by a score of 15-12 at the Community Pool. The win puts the Warriors at 10-5 overall on the season and 7-1 in the Citrus Coast League—good enough for a share of first place in the newly formed league. Carpinteria will have already hosted and played the winner of the CIF-SS Division-Seven Wild Card matchup between Sierra Vista and Pioneer prior to this issue’s publication.

January 29 – The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team played their final game of the season, dropping a 68-23 decision to Santa Paula at Warriors Gym. Although the Warriors failed to make the playoffs for the second consecutive year under new coach Benti De la Cruz, the squad increased their scoring average over the final three games. They will also have most of their players returning for next year, as this year’s team was made up of primarily inexperienced players.

January 30 – The Cate School boys soccer team earned their first postseason bid in three years on Wednesday, Jan. 30, by defeating visiting Grace Brethren, 5-2. In the 35th minute, Daniel Boateng launched a shot to the far post off a corner kick that rebounded back to him for the score. After the break, Cate went right back to work with Theo Mack netting a goal in the 43rd minute off a through ball from Buba Fofanah. But things went sideways for the next 15 minutes as Grace Brethren converted a penalty kick in the 44th minute, and then, scored on a free kick that got flicked into the upper right corner of the net in the 58th minute for the equalizer. In the 69th minute, Dylan Vincent unleashed a shot that the keeper deflected to the far post where Fofanah put it away. Later, Mack struck again when Fofanah found him in the box, and he slotted a shot inside the near post. Mack then completed the first hat trick of his career in the 77th minute when he followed Vincent’s shot that was initially saved and knocked it home for his third goal of the game.

Of pool toys and proper surfboards

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH It probably shouldn’t matter to me what kind of surfboard someone chooses to ride at Rincon. Surfing is meant to be fun after all, so how is it that the sight of a grown man at Indicator on a massproduced, sponge-foam board sets my teeth on edge? Presumably, he’s after the same thing I am on an early morning before work: some time in the sea with the beauty of the waves. Riding them is almost ancillary. But only “almost,” because the ride is central to the pursuit, and in my way of seeing, the way one rides, and the equipment one rides on, tells the story of a surfing life.

In my view, surfing is a dance of regional expression and a culture with roots that connect to the ancient seafarers of Polynesia and Africa. A lofty view to be sure, particularly when the chemical com-

position of the hand-crafted and purposefully designed surfboards I ride don’t differ significantly from the petro-soup of my Wavestorm-brand riding nemesis. We each have a share in a plasticized world due to the materials of the surf craft we ride, but Mr. Wavestorm has taken the final step and broken from any sense of grandeur or history in his pursuit. And perhaps that is his intention. Perhaps Mr. Wavestorm sees an underlying hypocrisy in contemporary wave riding, the sport of Hawaiian kings reduced to yet another commodity in the ever-expanding Western marketplace. In that case, perhaps he is right. He will not abide the facile appropriation of an ancient art under the ruse of words like “craftsmanship” and “tradition” wrapped in polyurethane foam, fiberglass cloth and resin. Better, his thinking might go, to do away with conceit and call surfing in the 21st century what it is—nothing more than another diversion in a portfolio of capitalist options for the leisure class. Your heroes are tarnished, ride the mass-produced foam surfboard because the whole industry is a sham.

But that is not true. The industry is not a sham. Real surfboards, the ones designed by life-long wave riders, have lineage. Naturally, all the foibles of the human condition attach to the surfboardmaking business—petty rivalries, naked rip-offs and imitation—but its core connects to the Hawaiians who kept surfing alive through the darkest days of colonialization. Learning from his elders,

Duke Kahanamoku brought surfing to America and Australia for people in those lands to marvel at and try themselves.

And before Duke and the surfers of early 20th-century Hawaii, the ancient Hawaiians, kings and commoners alike, rode waves, as did West Africans among their fishing canoes. We return to something greater than being mere consumers, or a target demographic, when we learn how to navigate the surf zone, how to read an on-coming wave, catch it and ride down the line.

Of course, one can navigate the surf zone on a Wavestorm foamie, and it may be the ideal piece of equipment on which to learn the “watery path,” but there is something inappropriate, even rude, in paddling out at a classic wave like Rincon—a place rich in California surfing history—on a pool toy. It’s not a beginner’s wave either, so learners can go ahead and have a whale of a time on their soft-tops in surf school at Santa Claus Lane. Mr. Wavestorm thumbs his nose at the possibility that surfing and being a surfer might mean more than merely riding a wave, that surfing might be a means of subverting the forces that surveil and process the minutiae of our lives for profit.

The most galling aspect of Mr. Wavestorm’s choice of equipment is that he clearly has some ability. His cookie-cutter stance notwithstanding, the man sits cross-legged on one ride, paddles into a wave backwards on another, having a jolly old time. But he has turned his back on the tribe. In riding that piece of flotsam, he negates the tree of relationships and influence that generations of surfers have had on each other. The people who make Wavestorms do not make them for the betterment of the artform of surfing, they make them for cold, hard profit. And to acquiesce to them—to these outsiders, these manufacturing titans—by deigning to ride their ill-formed blocks of foam, is to say to hell with the stories of Matt Kivlin tuning in the pintail design to better race the wall through the cove at Rincon, to hell with George Greenough and his skunk-work spoons that heralded the shortboard revolution, to hell even with Al Merrick and those sublime Thrusters on which Tom Curren showed the world what could be done on a surfboard.

Some board-builders suggest that at $99 Wavestorms make it possible for more people to get into surfing, and that some percentage of these people will go on to become “real” surfers and then seek “real” surfboards. (Indeed, more than 100,000 Wavestorms are sold each year, making them far and away the best-selling surfboard in the world.) If that’s the case, if Costco shoppers end up seeking out shapers for hand-made equipment, then

But I doubt the concept of trickle-down economics, no less in surfboards than in a Reganesque portrait of wealth distribution. As for people wanting to have fun in the ocean on a safer and less-expensive surfboard—who can gainsay the value of a Wavestorm?

Still, where real surfing (and there is such a thing) thrives, a culture of knowledge and tradition continues that has little to do with mass markets.

Of course, my quasi-Marxist critique of the Wavestorm phenomena reveals more about my own view of the world than it does the actual state of surfing.

And the surfers with a sense of continuity and connection still haunt the distant reefs.

So, for all this nostalgia, this insistence on a notion of surfing purity, how is it that my family also possesses a Wavestorm surfboard? The nerve of this guy! It came to us after my wife found it discarded and buried in mud on the side of a parking lot. She excavated it, and come summertime, I washed the caked mud off, then pulled away plastic film in long strips that amounted to a soccer-ball-sized mass for the landfill, and we brought the damn thing down to the beach. My seven-yearold daughter loves to paddle it, but that board will never make it to Rincon—a man must have some standards after all.

Following their victory over Malibu, the Carpinteria High School Junior Varsity Basketball team clinched the league championship in the inauguration of the Citrus Coast League. The JV boys, led by coach Mark Rogers, completed an undefeated league season at 10-0.

Four Cate School football players named to All-CIF Team

The Cate School football team had four members named to the 2019 Eight-Man Division-One All-CIF team. Senior quarterback Jack Deardorff was named Offensive MVP of the squad, which also included senior Drew Anastasio, and juniors Callum Casey and Scott Holmes. The Rams started the season off 10-0 before falling to Windward in the second round of the playoffs to finish 10-1 overall.

Beckwith gives you the history of the tea trade, from ancient to modern, as well as the development of different types of teas.

The concept of small regions having their own particular cultivars reminded me of the distinctive local varieties of so many vegetables and fruits.

The amount of work and of science that creates different types of tea are amazing.

Whether the leaf is grown in deep shade or semi-shade, picked young or mature, the method of drying and treatments, if any, applied to the leaf all contribute to making tea for our different palates.

The photos from the author’s travels, along with Wendy McNaughton’s illustrations are a trip around the tea world: informative, fun and visually delightful.

The authors, Beckwith and Caroline Paul, have included a glossary, bibliography and instructions for hosting a tea tasting party.

My personal favorite was the section on the labeling of tea, the drawbacks thereof, and what factual information you should look for on the label.

I would recommend this book and even suggest that the book plus a selection of teas would make a lovely gift for a friend or family member.

He was sent to Tasmania where he feared death by boredom and isolation. Nevertheless, he managed to communicate with fellow exiles and beyond. With help from his wealthy father, he escaped. His reputation preceded him, and his welcome in America was riotous. His leadership, oration and exploits made him a great recruiter of his fellow countrymen to the union side of the Civil War. Meagher resigned and moved to Montana serving as acting governor where he fought yet again against vigilantes. His death remains a mystery to this day.

Disturbances The harbor seals were scared twice by pier activity.

Harbor seals have good unNatural History Notes derwater vision, adapted to sight even in murky dark water. However, foraging is also accomplished by use of their vibrissae—sensitive vibration detecting “whiskers”—and excellent hearing. Tests have shown blinded seals able to follow the disturbance trail of moving prey. Blind seals appear to survive well.

Lion Ron Hurd was recently made a Life Member by the Carpinteria Lions Club for his many years of service to the club and community. Over the years, Hurd served as club president, zone chair, region chair and in 2004/05 Hurd served as district governor. When Hurd’s father Walt decided it was time to retire as club secretary, he volunteered for the difficult job and has ably served in that role ever since. Hurd is the 11th Lion awarded Life Member status in the 91-year history of the Carpinteria Lions Club.

Rotary Club Morning hosts firefighters, explores psychotherapy

At a recent meeting, Battalion Chief Michael Gallagher thanked the Rotary Club Morning and the community members who supported the Casino Night fundraiser.

With the proceeds from that event, Rotary was able to donate a pair of tall debris flow wader boots for each firefighter in the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District. The disaster of Jan. 9 exposed a need in the district for more specialized equipment. Last year, first responders had thermal heat protection which is not designed for water and debris emergencies. In addition to the boots, Rotary donated six specialized swift-flow rescue vests.

At a later date, Merle Yost, a clinical psychotherapist, spoke to Morning Rotarians on the topic of “energy hygiene,” or saving energy for the needs of a productive life in a busy and demanding world. Yost advocated for protecting personal space, employing the familiar model of personal bubble boundaries. According to Yost, empathy acknowledges the conditions and issues of others, but does not require “merging” with those conditions. Being aware of this helps a person to understand personal boundaries in relationships with others and preserves personal energy while not absorbing pain.

After making the cover of the Coastal View News, Amanda McIntyre took a quick jaunt to Cambodia for a return visit to Angkor Wat that had been closed on her previous trip due to the presence of land mines. McIntyre got a three-day pass to explore the site, built by the Khmer kingdom which lasted for 300 years.

Their temples were built of sandstone and laterite, with moats that served as water sources. Angkor Wat (translated to “City of Temples” in English) was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century.
