A new year means different things to different people. Some people enter the next year ready to change lives, theirs or others, while other people continue along content with things as they are. I tend to use the change of the calendar to reflect on the past year with friends, and talk about the goals we have for ourselves in the coming year. One goal I have every year is to be a better consumer by making decisions that reduce waste and make a positive impact on climate change. For 2020, I came up with a Top 5 list of things to work on.

5. BUY LESS/BUY BULK. We all fall victim to our consumer culture. Overnight delivery services make it even easier to impulse shop. My personal email inbox is full of flash sales offering great deals on things that I love. This year, think before you buy. Do you really need a travel size version of something you already have in a large size? Instead, purchase reusable travel containers that will reduce your overall waste in the long term. If you are shopping for a favorite shampoo or a regular household purchase like toilet paper, see if you can buy the same product in bulk. This will reduce the number of trips to the store, as well as the amount of overall packaging.

4. BE SELECTIVE. When you are buying things, try to purchase from companies that have good environmental practices. There are lots of great companies that make items using recycled materials. Clothing companies have started trending towards using more sustainable manufacturing practices, reducing waste through their entire manufacturing process. Others now offer recyclable packaging and carbon offsets. The more people select these options, the more wide spread these practices will become. This also applies to purchasing food. When shopping, skip items with unnecessary packaging, and try to purchase glass or canned items instead of plastic.

3. TAKE ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION. This is one I haven’t been doing great at lately and have vowed to do better in 2020. The latter half of 2019 I was plagued with injuries that prevented me from riding my bike and even walking very far for a time. I was driving everywhere and feeling guilty about how often I was behind the wheel by myself.

This year, I am going to ride my bike, take the bus and carpool more. It will be a big adjustment for me, but I know that reducing vehicle miles traveled in a car is better for the environment, which also means it is better for me.

2. DIY PRODUCTS. This one might seem a little odd on this list, but I can tell you that making your own household cleansers can greatly reduce your overall waste. I make my own household cleansers. They are vinegar based, smell great and instead of using multiple spray bottles I just buy the ingredients for them in bulk and reuse a spray bottle. Not only have I reduced the amount of plastic waste I generate, I save a lot of money.

1. BUY LOCAL. This is a big one and probably one of the ways you can make the biggest impact. Buying local reduces the number of truck trips that need to be taken, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions. Transportation is one of the largest controllable contributors to carbon emissions. Buying local also gives you control over what your purchases are packaged in. This is particularly true when it comes to food. We are lucky to have an abundance of places we can purchase locally grown produce that hasn’t been wrapped in plastic, and doing so reduces single use plastic waste as well as overall emissions. Plus, you are supporting local businesses and farmers. It is a win all around.

For 2020, I am going to work even harder at sticking to these goals. I find the rate at which our planet is being impacted by climate change scary, and want to do more on a personal level to make an impact. I invite you all to work on meeting those goals with me in the coming year.

Seal pupping season begins, beach closes

Harbor seal pupping season has begun in Carpinteria. The beach surrounding the local rookery is closed between Dec. 1 and May 31 to provide a safe, sheltered location for harbor seals to rest on the sand, give birth and nurse their young. Volunteers from Sealwatch take shifts on the blufftop above the rookery from sunup to sundown between Jan. 1 and May 31 to educate members of the public about the beach closure and the natural history of the harbor seals.

Signs are posted on the beach at either side of the rookery to mark the closure as dictated by Carpinteria Municipal Code. Violators have been prosecuted. The federal

Marine Mammal Protection Act also protects seals. Under MMPA, a disturbance, which is anything that disrupts natural behavioral patterns, including nursing, breeding, feeding or sheltering, can lead to a penalty up to $25,000. To sign up to volunteer or to learn more, call (805) 684-2247.

Toro Creek Bridge opens to two-way trafďŹ c

Caltrans has reopened the Toro Creek Bridge to two-way trafďŹ c with ďŹ nal striping scheduled for next week during the daytime hours. During striping, there will be a temporary closure with the previous detour in place. The Toro Creek Bridge was one of six along State Route 192 which were damaged in the Montecito Debris Flow in January 2018. All six bridges are now complete, however work is expected to continue through February on bicycle and pedestrian railings.

City to lower speed limit on section of El Carro Lane

on Jan. 13, Carpinteria City Council voted to decrease the speed limit from 25 mph to 20 mph on El Carro lane between linden avenue and Trenora street when children are present. The decision came after a speed Zone survey conducted by the city concluded that the area, close to Canalino Elementary school, experienced heavy car and foot traffic during school drop off and pick up times potentially creating greater risks for traffic collisions and accidents.

Based on the survey, sections of Via real, linden and Carpinteria avenues, among other roads, will also be considered for speed limit adjustments.

Guidelines for setting speed limits are established by Caltrans. For speed zones to be enforceable, an Engineering and Traffic Study including a Speed Zone survey is required. In the process of conducting the survey, city staff compared posted speed limits to the legally recorded speed limits and found that there were roadways in Carpinteria that had speed limits that were unenforceable because no previous speed Zone survey had been conducted or speed limit adjustment recorded in the vehicle code. staff noted that Carpinteria avenue through downtown, currently posted at 25 mph, had never been surveyed before the current study, which means that “the legal speed limit is 50 mph regardless of what is posted.” However, the current survey’s findings support a 25-mph limit and the change will be codified. “We have some clean-up to do,” noted city staff.

The busy intersection near Canalino School, on El Carro Lane before meeting Linden Avenue, will soon have a speed limit of 20 mph when children are present. several councilmembers pointed out the need for not only adjusting speed limits but also enforcing them. “We’ve talked about people speeding on that street for several meetings,” said Councilman Gregg Carty, “It doesn’t matter what the speed limit is… people drive whatever

they want and if it isn’t enforced, they just keep speeding.”

According to the staff report, speed limits are generally set based on the prevailing speed of existing traffic, reported collision history and adjacent land uses. speed limits are lowered when there

are greater incidents of traffic accidents, higher density development, adjacent land uses (such as school zones), and bicycle and/or pedestrian activity.

In the upcoming months, City Council is expected to hear additional recommendations for speed limit adjustments.

Construction to begin on third lane of Hwy 101

The linden and Casitas Pass project which started in september 2016 will wrap up this spring, according to Kirsten ayars, spokesperson for the project. ayars told the Council that the next phase of highway improvements was well on its way. Contractors will soon work to widen Highway 101 to three lanes in both directions within the city of Carpinteria boundaries—from Bailard avenue to Padaro lane. The additional lane will ultimately span from Carpinteria to Montecito, connecting that stretch of highway to widening work already completed on both ends connecting Ventura to Goleta.

Improvements in Carpinteria’s roadways are part of the $115 million sBCaG and Caltrans project, “Highway 101: santa Barbara to Mussel shoals,” which when complete will have widened 16 miles of Highway 101, adding carpool lanes and addressing a narrow portion of Highway 101 that currently has two lanes in each direction.

Work in 2020 will focus on the Southbound side of Carpinteria’s section of Highway 101, and shift to the northside in 2021.

When completed in 2023, there will be new peak period carpool lanes, new highway bridges at Franklin and Santa Monica creeks, new on- and off-ramps at santa Monica road, Carpinteria and reynolds avenues, and four new soundwalls. The project also includes the construction of the Carpinteria Creek and summerland bike paths.

Rincon trail concerns

I am appalled that the Carpinteria Planning Commission voted to skip the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Rincon Trail project.

This project includes non-reversible changes to a sensitive landscape. Wellmeaning coastal projects everywhere have a long and widespread history of “oops” and “gotcha” outcomes. Thus, I expected the Commission to make the maximum effort (not a “hey-this-is-allthe-law-requires” one) to study this project’s full range of impacts. An EIR doesn’t foolproof a project, but skipping an EIR increases risk of unforeseen problems.

I don’t know the actual reasons for this decision but I can’t imagine any that justify it. Is somebody really claiming we need to fast-track this project to keep bikers and hikers off dangerous routes?

(That’s about as convincing as shutting off regional power for public safety.)

There are a few people, like myself, who feel that the Carpinteria Valley has been treated for years like the county’s ugly stepchild. When they want money, they have no problem coming to us for money, but that’s it. I think it’s payback time, unless they too are controlled by the marijuana growers.

A malodorous environment

I would like to commend the Air Pollution Control District for meeting the California Ozone standards. I assume that it was a hard job. I think I have an easier job for them: how about cleaning up the air in the Carpinteria Valley of what marijuana growers have put into our once-clean air?

I don’t know how long it took for (the Air Pollution Control District) to clean up our ozone, but we have had to put up with this marijuana odor for over two-and-ahalf years. This should be a simple task.

If growers cannot control the marijuana odor, they should have their permits suspended until they comply.

Obituaries

Allen Howard Cox III 10/12/1941 – 12/21/2019

Allen Howard Cox III passed away peacefully in Nevada City, California on Dec. 21, 2019, after a life-long battle with symptoms related to a childhood diagnosis of Polio. He was born in Seattle, Washington, on Oct. 12, 1941, to Allen H. Cox Jr. and Doris Lamping Cox. After graduating from Carpinteria High School, Class of ’59, he attended UC Berkeley, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree and then went on to complete his law degree from Hastings Law School in San Francisco. He had a long and successful career as a corporate lawyer and partner at Jordan Keeler & Seligman law firm in San Francisco and retired in 2014 after more than 35 years of tirelessly representing his community.

He was a kind, thoughtful, patient and highly intelligent man who cared deeply about his friends and family and made those that had the pleasure of knowing him feel seen, welcome and accepted.

He was passionate about his family history, classic cars and gardening. He was able to fix anything, volunteered at the Empire Mine State Park, and his thirst for knowledge never ceased.

Allen is survived by his loving and devoted wife Carol Cox, children Wendy Cox Hoyle, Lisa Cox, Tracy Cox Poole, Allen H. Cox IV, step-children Josh Wright and wife Danielle Colborn Wright, Tim Wright, grandchildren Zander Stead Hoyle, Spencer Poole, Thomas Poole, Amea Ann Cox and brothers Denny Cox and David Lelande.

He will be greatly missed and never forgotten.

Stephen Orobuena Garcia was born and raised in Santa Barbara, California.

He attended Franklin Elementary School and graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1955. He was very proud of his Air Force service during the Cold War from 1956 – 1960.

After he left the Air Force, Steve became a union plumber. He was a member of the Southern California Pipe Trades Local #114 in Santa Barbara. He was awarded a certificate for 50 years of membership. He worked several times at Vandenberg Air Force Base and always felt he was part of important history.

Steve married Angelina Lopez and they had three children, Stephen C. Garcia, Arlene Marie Morales (Manuel) and Paul Matthew Garcia, and they gave him 12 grandchildren. Steve met his forever love, Ann, and they were married for 33 years.

A private service will be held.

Priscilla Jean Pearce Whittaker 1/24/1935 – 1/3/2020

Priscilla Jean Pearce Whittaker went to Heaven on Jan. 3, 2020. Priscilla and her twin brother, Laird, were born in San Francisco on Jan. 24, 1935.

Priscilla graduated from Chula Vista High School in 1952. She received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from San Diego State University in 1956, then taught elementary school in Seattle, Santa Barbara and at Aliso Elementary School in Carpinteria.

While teaching in Santa Barbara, Priscilla met and married Galen Pearce on July 27, 1958, at First Presbyterian Church in Santa Barbara. They settled in a Don Bensen-designed home built on Foothill Road in Carpinteria. In 1966, Priscilla and Galen and their young children moved to Portales, New Mexico, then Lubbock, Texas, while Galen pursued a PhD in Education. The family moved to Reno, Nevada, in 1969 where Galen became a professor at University of Nevada.

Galen’s life was taken in December 1969 in a car accident near Reno that also left Priscilla in critical condition.

After Priscilla recovered, she and her three children returned to Carpinteria in 1970 and received amazing support from Carpinteria Community Church and the Carpinteria community as she raised her three children as a single mother.

During that period, Priscilla was Curator of Education at the Santa Barbara Historical Society Museum, cooked for the Audubon High Sierra Camp in the summers, and worked for Carpinteria Unified School District as a teacher/tutor for homebound students. After earning a master’s degree in Education at UC Santa Barbara in 1984, Priscilla began a 10-year career as Independent Learning Skills Coordinator at Braille Institute.

Priscilla married widower Roy Whittaker on Sept. 12, 1992 and enjoyed 19 years of a blessed marriage filled with many happy family memories and fre-

quent travels. Priscilla loved nature and the outdoors. She also enjoyed river rafting, hiking in the Santa Barbara County backcountry with close friends and camping. Priscilla loved Carpinteria and always treasured the close friends she had in the community. She loved teaching in Carpinteria as a newlywed, raising her children in Carpinteria, and her volunteer work in her later years.

Priscilla served in a number of volunteer roles including with Santa Barbara Maritime Museum’s Visitor Center, Carpinteria Host Program, Friends of the Carpinteria Library Bookstore, Carpinteria Valley Historical Museum and Carpinteria Arts Center. Priscilla also served in a variety of roles at Carpinteria Community Church, most recently as a Deacon. She also loved baking, gardening and walking along the Carpinteria Bluffs.

Following a fall early in 2019, Priscilla moved to a skilled nursing unit at Atherton Baptist Homes in Alhambra, California, where she enjoyed eight months of joy-filled days and regular visits from family members before peacefully passing away in her sleep. Priscilla’s strong faith in God, her optimism and hope and her kind and loving demeanor characterized her entire life. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.

Priscilla is survived by her daughter Janet Klimowich (Andrew), sons Colin Pearce (Susan) and Andy Pearce (Sandy), stepson Brian Whittaker (Pearl), stepdaughter Christine Beadle, stepdaughterin-law Anne Whittaker, grandchildren Elisabeth Klimowich, Hope Klimowich, Sean Larson, Jackson Pearce, Odessa Pearce, Kiry Pearce Chan, Kathryn Pearce, Sarah Pearce, Lesley Pearce, and Hudson Pearce, step-grandchildren, Megan Saunders (Callum), Conor Whittaker, Caitlyn Damron (Jackson), Kelsey Whittaker, April Spinale (Chris), and step-great-grandchildren Carter Spinale, Sydney Spinale and Nora Damron. She is preceded in death by her twin brother Laird Gale, husbands Galen Pearce and Roy Whittaker, stepson Tom Whittaker, and step-grandson Jimmy Boody.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a gift in Priscilla’s memory are encouraged to give to Carpinteria Community Church, Carpinteria Valley Museum of History or Friends of the Carpinteria Library.

A Celebration of Life service to honor and remember Priscilla will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020 at 1:30 p.m. at Carpinteria Community Church, with a reception to follow in the church Fellowship Hall.

Congressman Salud Carbajal talks lawmaking in times of impeachment

On Dec. 18, the U.S. House of Representatives impeached President Trump for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The two articles were passed by majority votes along party lines 230 to 197; and 229 to 198, and the case will now proceed to the Senate for trial. Among the Democrats that voted to impeach the president was Congressman Salud Carbajal, representing California’s 24th district which contains all of Santa Barbara County.

As the new year rolls in new laws, and impeachment articles are prepared for the Senate, CVN checked in with Carbajal on what motivated his historic impeachment vote, what he considers his major achievements from 2019 and what’s on his to-do list for 2020.

Impeachment

For Carbajal, voting to impeach the president was in his charge as a member of the legislative branch of government which oversees the executive branch, including the president and his administration.

“No one is above the law, including this president, as we’ve seen in previous cases brought to the supreme court, including Nixon,” Carbajal told CVN. During the impeachment inquiry, testimonies and evidence convinced Carbajal that the president had abused his power, the contention of the first article of impeachment.

“This president asked a foreign power to interfere in our upcoming election by asking that he investigate a likely political opponent of the president. This was for political gain, not for the benefit of the country,” said Carbajal. “He was asking for a political favor. And he held out funding that was allocated by Congress to coerce the Ukrainian government. He was using his power for personal gain.”

The second article, obstruction of Congress, is directly linked to the president’s behavior during the impeachment inquiry. According to Carbajal, when the president directed his staff not to comply with the House’s subpoenas, blocking testimonies and refusing to provide documents, he was willingly obstructing the impeachment inquiry’s judicial process.

“He gave us no choice but to proceed to find him in contempt,” said Carbajal. “I took an oath when I went into the Marine Corps, and when I became a member of Congress, that I would uphold the Constitution. This impeachment was not about party, it was about ensuring the Constitution.”

2019 legislative highlights

Along with the impeachment inquiry and proceedings, the House of Representatives was also busy passing 270 bipartisan bills—most of which have not yet been considered or ratified by the Senate.

“Democrats have been walking and chewing gum at the same time.”

Among the bills that Carbajal pushed forward last year are a price-cap to pharmaceutical costs for Medicare patients; the California Clean Coast Act to prevent future offshore drilling; the National Defense Authorization Act to provide family leave to government employees; the Farm Workforce Modernization Act to provide a legal path for the existing labor pool that is undocumented—restructuring the H2A visa program to create a modern guest worker visa; the Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence Act to establish legal penalties on certain robocalls; the American Dream and Promise Act of 2019 to prohibit deporting individuals with DACA status and to provide a path toward permanent residency; the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act; and the Equality Act which sets up civil rights protections for the LBGTQ community.

2020 to-do list

Looking ahead to the current year, Carbajal said there are a number of acts on the docket that will be important to his constituents. “I’m hoping that the Coastal Marine Economies Protection act, including my bill, the California Clean Coast Act, will move soon to the Senate and president,” said Carbajal.

Additionally, Carbajal expects the Central Coast Heritage Protection Act that he authored—and was passed through in the House Natural Resources Committee 2019—to hit the House floor for a full vote soon. The bill seeks to designate

nearly 250,000 acres of land within Los Padres National Forest and Carrizo Plain National Monument as protected wilderness areas.

Carbajal will also be working on a Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act to establish a national infrastructure investment corporation to allow local governments to borrow low-interest loans for local infrastructure projects.

“I’m in a unique circumstance in that I serve as the vice chair of the Transport Committee and I’m hoping that I can influence many of these infrastructure bills,” noted Carbajal.

Following the Conception tragedy in which 34 people were killed when the boat “Conception” caught fire and sank off Santa Cruz Island early Labor Day morning, Carbajal introduced the Small Passenger Vessel Safety Act in December 2019. The act would require small passenger vessels, such as the Conception,

to have at least two escape routes to different parts of the vessel. The bill is expected to be voted on in the House and Senate this year.

Carbajal also said that he will continue his work in building common sense gun control laws. In 2019, he introduced the Extreme Risk Protection Act which would provide a grant program to incentivize the development of gun control laws. The act also provides for an expansion in “red flag laws” to remove access to firearms from individuals who are considered a danger to themselves or others.

“In light of the Isla Vista tragedy, and I have a little sister who committed suicide when I was a young boy, I introduced (this bill),” said Carbajal. “This will help families who have a member who is a danger to themselves.”

“Those are just a few things as I look into the future,” Carbajal told CVN.

During a consent search, two meth pipes and methamphetamine was located. The man also had a warrant, and he was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

A caller reported that someone attempted to force open the front door with some type of pry tool. No entry was made. Offense report documented.

Wednesday, Jan. 8

6:03 p.m. / Stolen Vehicle Arrest / 5500 block Carpinteria Avenue

The victim left his car running while he moved another vehicle. An 18-yearold man got into the running vehicle and drove off. The victim called 911 while following the suspect through Carpinteria.

Deputies arrived on scene and conducted a vehicle stop. The suspect admitted to taking the vehicle without permission.

The suspect was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Deputies contacted a man in his parked vehicle at the south end of Bailard Avenue. There was a bag of marijuana on the floor board of the back seat in plain view. A probable cause search was conducted for compliance of marijuana laws and during the search, multiple pieces of burnt tin foil were located throughout the vehicle. The man also displayed signs of being under the influence of a controlled substance. Two of the man’s friends, who were walking on the beach, returned to the vehicle. One of the friends was a woman who was found to have an active warrant for her arrest. Both the man and woman were arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Conservation groups sue Trump Administration over fracking in California

The Carpinteria Valley Water District (CVWD) has received the District Transparency Certificate of Excellence by the Special District Leadership Foundation (SDLF) in recognition of its outstanding efforts to promote transparency and good governance.

“This award is a testament to Carpinteria Valley Water District’s commitment to open government,” said Robert McDonald, CVWD general manager. “The entire district staff is to be commended for their contributions that empower the public with information and facilitate engagement and oversight.”

To receive the award, a special district must demonstrate the completion of essential governance transparency requirements, including conducting ethics training for all board members, properly conducting open and public meetings and filing financial transactions and com-

pensation reports to the State Controller in a timely manner.

SDLF is an independent, non-profit organization formed to promote good governance and best practices among California’s special districts through certification, accreditation and other recognition programs.

Special districts are independent public agencies that deliver core local services to communities, such as water, wastewater treatment, fire protection, parks and recreation, healthcare, sanitation, mosquito abatement, ports, libraries, public cemeteries and more. Districts are established by voters and their funding is approved by voters to meet specific needs through focused service. They can be specially molded to serve large regions or small neighborhoods, depending on the need.

On Jan. 14, several conservation groups filed a joint lawsuit against the Trump Administration, challenging the last step in the administration’s plan to allow oil drilling and fracking on more than 1 million acres of public lands and minerals in Central California. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles

by Los Padres ForestWatch, Patagonia, Sierra Club, Earthjustice and Center for Biological Diversity, among other environmental conservation groups.

According to the complaint, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) violated federal law by failing to consider fracking’s potential harm to public health and recreation in the region, as well as harm to the climate and possible groundwater and air pollution. The suit also notes the potential for oil-industryinduced earthquakes.

The BLM’s plan would allow drilling and fracking on public lands across eight counties in California’s Central Valley and Central Coast, including parcels in Carpinteria Valley.

The BLM has not held an oil and gas lease sale in California since 2012, when a federal judge ruled that the agency had violated the National Environmental Policy Act by issuing oil leases in Monterey County without considering fracking’s environmental dangers. In November, Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration announced a moratorium on new high-pressure steam injection wells and scientific reviews of all current fracking permit applications.

“BLM’s ill-considered plan to fling wide the door to fracking on public lands is yet another assault on California’s efforts to protect its environment and move away from dirty fossil fuels,” said Ann Alexander, a senior attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council.

“Gov. Newsom just announced curbs on oil drilling, but BLM is charging full speed ahead with it. California is trying to find a way to rationally address its limited water supply, and now BLM is greenlighting activities that can contaminate it with toxic chemicals.”

Michelle Ghafar, an attorney at Earthjustice, brought up concerns that the BLM has chosen the oil industry over the health and safety of local communities in Central California. “A federal court already agreed with us once that the BLM failed to fully evaluate the impacts of the oil and gas expansion it is authorizing on public land,” said Ghafar.

“We’re returning to court once again to ensure the agency properly analyzes the impacts of devastating fracking activities in its plan.”

Many of the areas planned for drilling and fracking are near state parks and beaches, national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, the Pacific Crest Trail and Carrizo Plain National Monument. The lands are also home to threatened and endangered animals, including San Joaquin kit foxes and California condors.

“This reckless plan threatens the iconic landscapes that define central California, endangering our communities and moving us further away from a clean energy future,” said Jeff Kuyper, executive director of Los Padres ForestWatch. “Our action seeks to uphold our nation’s environmental protection laws while securing a safe and healthy future for our region’s public lands.”

Fracking is an extreme oil-extraction process that blasts a mixture of toxic chemicals and water into the ground to crack open oil-bearing rocks. According to the BLM, about 90 percent of new oil and gas wells on public lands are fracked. A 2015 report from the California Council on Science and Technology concluded that fracking in California happens at unusually shallow depths, dangerously close to underground drinking-water supplies, with unusually high concentrations of toxic chemicals.

Target shooting ban extended in Los Padres Forest

The U.S. Forest Service has announced that it will extend for another six months a ban on unmanaged target shooting throughout the Los Padres National Forest. The ban—first announced in January 2019—allows forest officials and volunteers to address the proliferation of litter, soil and water contamination, wildfires, vandalism, impacts to endangered wildlife, and other environmental and public safety hazards caused by decades of unmanaged target shooting across nearly two million acres of public lands in Santa Barbara, Ventura, San Luis Obispo, Monterey and western Kern counties.

The ban only applies to unmanaged target shooting.

Legal hunting with a valid license is not affected, and target shooting can continue at the Ojai Valley Gun Club and the Winchester Canyon Gun Club, both of which are staffed and operated by nonprofit organizations permitted by the U.S. Forest Service.

The Forest Service’s announcement cites “increasingly high fire danger conditions in the extended weather forecast and the potential for a wildfire sparked by shooting” as the primary justification for extending the ban. The Forest Service recently identified more than 140 informal target shooting sites throughout the Los Padres National Forest, and investigators have blamed shooting for causing at least 53 wildfires in the forest, scorching a combined 74,478 acres of forestland according to a release from Los Padres ForestWatch (LPFW).

The announcement also comes as the Forest Service and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service are completing a study on the impacts of unmanaged target shooting on rare and endangered plants and animals. The agencies agreed to conduct the study to partially resolve a lawsuit filed by LPFW in 2018. LPFW is represented in the lawsuit by Earthrise Law Center and the Environmental Defense Center (EDC). That study, resulting in the release of a biological opinion, is expected to be complete

by March of this year.

Three other national forests in Southern California have similar, permanent, bans in place. The Angeles, San Bernardino and Cleveland National Forests have prohibited target shooting outside of formally designated shooting sites for decades.

“Today’s announcement will continue to provide our

“Every day that unmanaged target shooting is prevented in the Los Padres National Forest is a good day for the environment,” said EDC attorney Maggie Hall.

“We applaud this Forest Service action, but there is much more that needs to be done, and we will continue to work to ensure that our wild lands, clean water and wildlife are protected from this destructive practice.”

In addition to the two permitted shooting sites in the Los Padres National Forest that remain open, shooters

According to the Forest Service website, “Law Enforcement Officers will be strictly enforcing this Forest Order in all areas of the Forest.” Individuals cited for violating the ban will face a mandatory appearance in U.S. District Court, where the judge can levy fines of up to $5,000 and/or six months in jail.

Sealwatch volunteeers began their docent and protection work on Jan. 1. This year, Sealwatch continues with both continuous blufftop and low-tide beach monitoring. Volunteers are needed, especially to cover any part of low-tide events. For information, call (805) 684-2247. This report covers January 1 - 12.

Disturbances

One major disturbance occurred: At 11 a.m. on Jan. 5 a loose dog left its people near Jelly Bowl and ran into the rookery, scaring all 88 seals into the ocean. By 5 p.m. only five had returned to the beach.

Six instances of people trespassing on the beach frightened the seals. Four disturbances were caused by helicopters. When contacted, one company agreed to avoid flying over the pier, and the pilot plans to bring his family to visit the seals.

Natural History Notes

Harbor seals do not migrate and are here year-round. They need to rest on land about 50 percent of the time, but most will flee when approached by land or air. Most pups are born February through March, but some arrive early and as late as May. Visitors are welcome to enjoy watching them from the blufftop.

Good teachers can be found in all our public schools, but they are becoming harder to keep because we don’t value their efforts enough to pay them well.

Governor Gavin melinda Newsom is proposing a beefed-up state budget for education in order to recruit and retain teachers, especially those needed for math and sciences and those needed for students with disabilities.

Whether or not this budget gets passed is yet to be seen.

It always amazes me that the public in California (I have only taught in this state) seems to under-appreciate teachers, especially when compensation is being discussed. I have been told by friends that I was so lucky to teach as it’s such an easy job—I could leave school by four every afternoon, I got lots of vacation days, and I got all summer off. Repeatedly, I challenged anyone who thinks teaching junior high is easy to volunteer to teach at a local junior high for one week, make lesson plans, grade papers and make sure all students are on task and not bothering other students. Most people I know don’t even want to go into a junior high much less spend the day there, and I’m not sure there would be a high survival rate among volunteers.

As far as those vacations are concerned, teachers do get breaks in their work schedule but for the most part, these breaks are unpaid vacation days. Teachers do not earn money during the summer break unless there is summer school or extra training or grant writing. Also, teachers can’t draw unemployment during their time off. That is why you find a lot of teachers looking for part-time jobs in the summer.

boring, and most days I felt like I was doing something worthwhile. But after many years it became apparent that you could spend endless hours at your job— staying late, taking work home, contacting parents and takCVn ing extra classes—or you could do the minimum. Your pay would be the same.

So, I decided what extras I would do, choosing the extras that would be helpful to my students.

It would irritate me wittwer that good teachers were often asked to do more work while the few weaker teachers weren’t pressured to volunteer.

One year my principal wanted all the language arts teachers to take a class on creative writing. This class was at night for three hours, once a week for six weeks.

First, I already had a master’s degree so didn’t need more educational credits. Second, I had three sons at home to tend to.

And third, I thought it was unfair for the principal to ask this of us without some compensation. So, I spoke up and said I would only attend if I were paid or if I would be given comp time (days where a substitute would teach for me without it impacting my sick leave). Finally, my principal agreed to give us all comp time if we would attend the class. The point is teachers are educated and well-trained employees, not volunteers. If they do extra work or have highly successful results with students, they should be rewarded.

If you own a business and have employees, you want the best you can afford. Pay them well and treat them well.

Although schools are not a business, the same rules apply—pay your teachers well and treat them well. We can look at school budgets and the bottom line and how to pay for health care. We can argue over and over that teachers are lucky to get a job in places like Carpinteria, so they should be willing to accept a lower pay scale. It is argued that we as a community can’t afford to pay our teachers a top-rate salary. I say we can’t afford not to. We need to attract the best teachers out there, and we need to keep them.

The artists have been working hard through the fall and winter, and they look forward to utilizing the light-filled brewery with its ample wall space to display their efforts.

‘Tis the season for surfing in Carpinteria

Professional photographer and former Brooks Institute faculty member Eliot Crowley has a show of portrait photography now hanging at the Lucky Llama coffee house titled, “Surfers of Santa Barbara.” The artist stated that he embarked on the project with a long-term vision in mind: “You start where you are,” Crowley said, “and use what you have.” He began with his old friend and well-known Rincon surfer Don Campbell, who, like the rest of the subjects in his 50-portrait show, then referred him to another Santa Barbara area surfer. Local wave riders will recognize the regulars from the line up at Rincon, and the photography show coincides not only with the surf season, but also the Rincon Classic waiting period and the Rincon-focused art show kicking off at the Carpinteria Arts Center on Saturday, Jan. 18.

Big Red Crane Company is Chamber of Commerce’s Small Business of the Year In 2014, Mike and Kathy Dawson purchased their first crane and Big Red Crane Company was born. Today, the Dawsons have a fleet of eight cranes, five trucks, trailers and equipment, along with 10 employees.

On Saturday, Jan. 25, the Dawsons will be honored with the Small Business of the Year award at the Carpinteria Chamber of Commerce’s Community Awards Banquet.

“Kathy and I were surprised and very humbled to learn of the award,” said Mike. “We both feel honored to even be considered for the award with so many wonderful small businesses in the Carpinteria community. Having said that, we are so proud of our ‘little’ Big Red Crane Company.”

A lot has changed for the couple in the last seven years. Before starting out on his own, Mike was vice president of another local crane company, Specialty Crane & Rigging, now out of business, and Kathy was a law firm administrator.

The pair decided to go “all in” and start their own business. “When Big Red Crane Company was born, I was 53 years old—a little scary,” said Mike. “Since then, there has been no looking back and we have achieved phenomenal success.”

While the Dawsons have enjoyed success, they’ve also had to work very long hours and wear many hats at the company. “We both work full-time for our company,” noted Mike. “Kathy and I continue to be the chief cooks and bottle washers, doing whatever needs to be done on a daily basis.”

The Dawsons consider customer service the key to any successful business, including their own. When customers call the company, Mike or Kathy are the ones who answer the phone. Additionally, Big Red Crane has a team of loyal, talented and safe crane operators and employees.

“We believe our customer service, our can-do attitude and our safe and efficient operations sets us apart and we love that.

We keep it personal,” said Mike.

When they are not working on their business, the Dawsons are volunteering for their community. They love to do it and call it “the gift you give to yourself.”

Their volunteer work includes the Lions Club Festival of Trees (which Mike cochairs), the Avofest, the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club auction and Touch-a-Truck events where children can sit in and touch the cranes.

Near and dear to Mike’s heart is the Trade Arts Program with Santa Barbara County Schools where he makes presentations to high school students on

Grant Cox Enterprises to be honored for Large Business of the Year by Chamber Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce has named Grant Cox Enterprises, Inc. its Large Business of the Year. Grant Cox began his company in 1999 in a Black 76 Chevy two-door truck purchased from Ray Seider for $2,500. In those days, surfing Tarpits was his daily inspiration. Using a logo designed by a family friend, David Cota, Grant started Tarpitz Gardening & Landscapes, named after the beach he had ridden his bike to surf almost every day since he was 10.

Grant grew up in the flower industry.

His family owned Carpinteria Wholesale Florist, then later Shiprite Floral. He began his company with two brothers that had just moved to town from Washington, originally from Mexico, and picked up a few Carpinteria and Santa Barbara maintenance accounts.

After five years, and over 30 accounts, Grant wanted to do more than just maintenance. He knew he had the skill to design and construct, so he earned his Landscaping Contractors License and incorporated his business as Grant Cox Enterprises Inc. (GCE). He created the landscape construction division of the company named after his family’s middle name—Greenleaf Landscapes.

While his wife Beth was by his side from the beginning, it was Grant’s sisterin-law, Samantha Dowdall-Green, who helped develop the office and human resource systems for the expanded busi-

In 20 years in business, the family has grown the company to 45 employees and over 100 maintenance accounts from Carpinteria to Santa Ynez, Encino, Malibu, Santa Monica and Beverly Hills, as well as landscape construction projects from San Francisco to Beverly Hills. Recently, GCE completed its largest project to date, the allegretto Vineyard Resort Paso Robles, a 36-month project. “It was challenging to say the least, but a ‘college’ of sorts for many of our employees who are now known as the rock stars of the company,”

said Beth and Grant. The company also recently completed a ground-up refurbishment of a 50-acre horse ranch in Mandeville Canyon, Beverly Hills, and are under contract for large estates in Montecito, Santa Ynez and an Equestrian Center in Somis Canyon.

But the business remains a “family business,” and Beth and Grant say they “put family and community first” and make sure their employees can do the same.

“We truly believe in giving back to the community which was the foundation of Grant Cox Enterprises Inc.,” said Beth and Grant. “We have utilized the labor and skill of the company for volunteer projects such as Relay For Life, Relay Recess, Franklin Trail, Santa Barbara Trails Council, The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria arts Center, California avocado Festival, Carpinteria Unified School District, Carpinteria Education Foundation, Carpinteria Morning Rotary and Lion’s Club Festival of Trees.”

The annual Relay For Life “Carp heart” and HoPE sign atop the Franklin Trail are also made possible by GCE’s efforts to give back to the community.

“We love the community of Carpinteria and feel so fortunate to have been able to grow relationships in so many ways through our 20-year-old company,” said Beth. “Grant is very passionate about his Carp community and he feels passionately that but for his roots, pun intended, growing up here in Carp was the biggest contribution to his desire to give back and work ethic to continue to want to provide and grow.

“The honor of being awarded Large Business of the Year is such an incredible feeling. We are humbled and so very elated.”

Towards health and well-being Promotores help Carpinterians to better futures

Disproportionate levels of obesity in the Latino community and the carry-on consequences of diabetes leading to kidney disease led doctors at the county department of public health in Santa Barbara to establish a health outreach program in the early 2000s. Centered on training volunteers in the community who could then serve as liaisons between healthcare service providers and the families they serve, the program has evolved into the Santa Barbara County Promotores Network, whose mission is “to empower families and individuals with respect, dignity and compassion by enhancing the quality of all aspects of their lives through education and promoting healthy behaviors.”

A 40-hour training prepares promotores to work in their communities, and there are 13 graduates of the program serving the Carpinteria area. On Monday, Jan. 13, Promotoras Ana Chavez, Irma Arroyo, Sochi Leon, Diana Perez, with lead Carpinteria Promotora Angelica Ornelas and Family Resource Center Program Director Maria Gonzalez, came together to talk about the program with CVN at the Carpinteria Children’s Project campus.

Irma Arroyo shared that since becoming a promotora in 2014 she has seen improved health and increased nutrition knowledge not only in her immediate family, but among the families she works with as well. “For anyone who thinks it (improving health and community awareness) can’t be done,” Maria Gonzalez said, “(the promotores) are proof that it can be done.” She added that the women are all mothers and hold regular jobs, on top of having made the time to go through the training

Arroyo, pictured in his Ventura college Pirates jersey, played soccer from the time he was four, but he found his passion on the Warriors football field when he was a sophomore at carpinteria High.

Former Carpinteria High School football placekicker Alberto Arroyo looks to have his career on the fast track. Last year, Arroyo performed the kicking and punting duties for the Warriors. This year, he brought his skills to Ventura College where it was announced last week that he and teammate Terrell Vaughn were both named to the All-American team.

“My goal has always been to (play) in the NFL,” said Arroyo.

Nicknamed “Tito,” Arroyo didn’t play organized football until his sophomore year in high school. But having played soccer since he was a youngster with AYSO, he had built a skill set that easily transferred over to the gridiron. One day Arroyo was kicking the ball with a friend at the stadium and some Warrior football coaches approached him asking if he’d like to join the team. With the approval of his parents, Alberto, Sr. and Alejandra, he joined.

Arroyo also played soccer for the Warriors as part of the Division Five CIF State Regional championship team of 2018. However, after that season, he decided that his future would be better served with football. “In the beginning of my senior year during soccer, I talked to my parents in detail and they agreed with me to stick with football because that’s kind of a main thing here in the U.S. compared to soccer,” said Arroyo.

On the Ventura College field he was joined by Warrior classmates Brady Sturdivan and Michael Garibay (Class of 2016). And he faced some stiff competition. “There were eight of us competing for that (placekicker) spot when I first got there. I was thinking I was going to be a red shirt,” said Arroyo

of the term used for a player who sits out the season—often the case for freshmen trying out for the team. But with some coaching from Steve Sanchez, a punter and holder on the squad, Arroyo ended up winning the starting job.

In a game last fall at Bakersfield, playing for the Ventura College Pirates, Arroyo kicked five field goals and converted two extra points in a 29-21 win.

“Just knowing all the pressure is on me, there was nothing that I really could think of, I was speechless when I also heard that I broke a record that game,” said Arroyo. His five boots through the uprights set a Pirate record for field goals in one game.

It was a record-breaking season for Arroyo, as he set the single season record at the college for points by a kicker with 115. He also claimed the record for the most field goals made in a season with 21. “Just having my family support me the whole way made it so much easier for me to be able to concentrate on practice, like perfecting my technique,” explained Arroyo. The Pirates also had another outstanding year. They ranked Number-10 in the state in the final coaches’ association poll.

At Ventura College, Arroyo is studying for a degree in kinesiology and plans to kick again next year. He’ll then look to move on to a four-year school where he can also utilize his kicking abilities.

“I always have to take it step by step. I’ll focus on college, I’ll focus on what’s after that, but the NFL’s the goal,” said Arroyo. And, at the rate he’s going, the next time you turnaround, you may see him playing on Sunday.

short stops prep News Aliso School teacher starts muscular dystrophy challenge

Last November, Aliso Elementary School teacher Mary Lewandowski and husband Leon started a challenge to benefit the fight against muscular dystrophy. Spurred on

by Leon’s mother’s diagnosis of the disease 20 years ago, the couple decided to walk their own marathon in her honor for someone who could not complete a marathon on their own. The couple, neither of whom are marathon runners, had special T-shirts designed and began their journey.

After completing a 26.2-mile challenge and posting their proof of completion, each donated $26.20 to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, then challenged others to do the same. Once challenged, potential marathoners have 30 days to find their 24-hour window to complete it. Because it’s a 24-hour window, some folks are doing a portion of their mileage in the evenings, going to bed and finishing up the next morning.

Meanwhile, Leon contacted running and marathon groups, local gyms, local churches, online influencers, and more, hoping to garner steam behind the challenge.

He started a Facebook group called “24-hour Marathon Challenge.” A woman who qualified for the Olympic trials in February joined the Lewandowskis, and there’s a running club in Pennsylvania that is now completing the challenge.

“The benefits for the challengers include kicking off 2020 with fitness, checking off something from their bucket lists, and connecting with others because it’s fun to do with someone else,” said Leon, who is a teacher at Franklin Elementary School in Santa Barbara. In 2012, Leon started The Random Acts of Kindness Challenge which has been adopted by many across the nation and overseas.

January 8 - The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team opened up their Citrus Coast League season against the Santa Paula Cardinals at Warriors Gym, falling by a score of 66-27. The Warriors were first on the board with a three-pointer from the right wing by Kaela Kelley. “The Cardinals quickly fired back and used their athleticism to play a strong full court press against the Warriors and closed the first with a last second three putting them up, 17-7,” said Carpinteria coach Benti De la Cruz. Gracie Verdugo added a bucket for the Warriors during the second quarter, but the Cardinals found themselves up big at the half. “The Warriors then started to find their groove during the third with junior Gabriella Graham putting up a three and two-pointer,” explained De la Cruz. The leading scorer for the Warriors was Kelley with eight points, as their overall record dropped to 3-6 and league to 0-1.

January 13 - The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team traveled to battle the Wildcats of Villanova, falling in Ojai by a score of 51-40. The Warriors were led by Hannia Hernandez’ 21 points and Graciella Verdugo’s eight. At the end of the first period, the Wildcats were up 24-10. “During the second, the Warriors were able to weather the storm a bit, but found themselves down 35-14 at the half,” said Carpinteria coach Benti De la Cruz. “During the third period though, the Warriors battled back and found their groove by getting valuable points off their fast break offense and jump shots coming from freshman Graciella Verdugo.” The Warriors cut the lead down to single digits, but it wasn›t enough, and Villanova held on to win by a margin of 11.

Nakasone wins CHS and SBART Scholar Athlete of the Year awards

Carpinteria High School senior Luke Nakasone walked away with two awards from the Jan. 13 Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table Press Luncheon. Nakasone has a 4.57 GPA and plays three sports for the Warriors. He won the Scholar Athlete of the Year Award from both the high school and athletic organization. Nakasone plays basketball and volleyball, and runs cross country. He also received All-Citrus Coast League honors in all three and has been named to the All-Academic team in all three as well.

As a captain of the boys basketball team, Nakasone led the Warriors to the CIFSouthern Section semifinals last year and into the first state tournament in the program’s history. Nakasone is also a drum major for the CHS marching band. With his high GPA, he’s also been a member of the California Scholarship Federation and has won a Presidential Award of Academic Excellence. The son of Lisa and Ryan Nakasone, Luke has also been president of the Interact Club, secretary of Habitat for Humanity and an assembly member of the Junior Statesmen of America.

Also recognized at the luncheon were CHS junior girls water polo goalie Kate Gay and Cate School senior boys soccer player Buba Fofanah who each received Honorable Mention status. Both student athletes led their squads with exceptional play to victory in their respective sports last week. January 8 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team dropped their Citrus Coast League opener to Santa Paula, 4-3. The Warriors fell behind 1-0 when Cydney Smolnikar equalized about two minutes later with a left-footed shot on a reverse pass from Dayne Wagner. The match was tied 1-1 at halftime, but the Cardinals pulled ahead with another goal about 25 minutes into the second half. Smolnikar responded with another goal off a corner kick to tie it again. The Warriors took the lead on a free kick goal by Aly Springer. “The Cardinals were dangerous with a few very skilled players up top for them, but our defense and goalkeeper, Karen Gamez, did a great job,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant. “I also thought Ashley Verdusco had her best game of the year, she was excellent in the midfield for us tonight.”

January 10 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team dropped a Citrus Coast League match to visiting Malibu, 2-0. “Bottom line is we did not play well for most of the game, some of that was Malibu, but a lot of it was our own doing,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. “We were scoreless for about 65 minutes until we gave up a penalty kick.” Carpinteria is now 2-8-1 overall and 0-2 in the CCL.

January 8 - The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team beat Santa Paula, 2-1 for their first win of the season. Sophomore Steven Zermeño scored on a corner kick in the fourth minute of the game, assisted by Vincent Rinaldi. “In the 16th minute, senior and captain Enrique Gutierrez scored from outside the 18 after a poor clearance from the Santa Paula defense,” said Warriors coach Leo Quintero. The Cardinals scored in the 38th minute to cut the lead in half. “Senior keeper Adrian Gonzalez recorded six saves, none more important than a one-on-one save late in the second half to preserve the victory,” said Quintero.

January 10 - The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team lost a road match by a score of 1-0. Malibu marked in the 72nd minute of the game. “It was a back ‘n forth battle with plenty of opportunities,” said Warriors coach Leo Quintero. “In this very competitive Citrus Coast League, one must be able to sink the ball in the back of the net when the opportunity arises to have any chance at victory.” Carpinteria’s overall record is 1-7 and CCL record is 1-1.

In the 53rd minute, Buba Fofanah collected a pass from center back Kobby Nimako, turned and got away from his defender, then dribbled around the keeper and shot it in the goal. Fofanah struck again one minute later by controlling a ball from Daniel Boateng, touched it twice and avoided his defender, and hit a shot that touched the underside of the crossbar for the goal. Following a Santa Clara goal in the 62nd minute, the Rams re-established their three-goal margin in the final minute of play when Fofanah found Boateng on a through ball in the box, and Boateng passed the ball across the goal mouth to Jae Lim who tucked it home. The win puts Cate’s overall record at 4-0-1 and league record at 1-0-1.

January 14 - The Cate School boys soccer team picked up a 4-1 win in Tri-Valley League play at Bishop Diego. The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the match. In the following minute, Buba Fofanah collected a pass from Devin Pai and equalized to make the score, 1-1. In the 12th minute, Fofanah found Daniel Boateng whose shot touched the bottom of the crossbar, only to have the ball bounce out to a waiting Will Deardorff who booted it into the open net. Six minutes later, Fofanah picked up a loose ball in the Cardinal box, dribbled right and converted the shot. Cate finished the scoring in the 59th minute when Fofanah once again collected a loose ball in the box and slotted it into the left corner.

January 9 - The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team hosted the Nordhoff Rangers for their third Citrus Coast League match of the season, coming away with a 16-5 win. “Senior Sadie Mead led the team with two quick goals in the first and second quarters, while junior Kate Gay was an iron curtain in the cage with 17 reported saves,” said Warriors coach Sergio Castaneda. The Warriors took a 3-0 lead before the Rangers fired back with a goal of their own.

January 10 - The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team visited the “Shark Tank” to face off against Malibu and came away with a 12-10 victory. Junior goalie Kate Gay had 16 blocks and the sophomore duo of Alex Zapata and Briana Rodriguez were the top scorers with three goals apiece. “The Warriors are thrilled with the win, but continue to prepare as league rival, Santa Paula, is approaching next week along with the Oxnard Tournament,” said Carpinteria coach Sergio Castaneda.

Dylan O’Neill led the Warriors with 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Gabe Medel tallied eight points and hauled in six rebounds, while, Ian Reed scored five, pulled down eight Ryan nakasone rebounds and dished out Ian Reed makes a lay-up in the Warriors Citrus seven assists. Newbury Park was led by Andrew Wilson’s 36 points and Cooper Lucas knocked down 17. The CIF-SS Division Three-AA Panthers improve to 15-5 on the season, while the Division Five-AA Warriors drop to 8-8.

The Rams were led by Meena Baher with seven of the team’s 13 first quarter points. In the second quarter, the Rams offense went into a drought. “Keeping us in the game was the play of Imani Oseso and Maya Blattberg, both secured critical defensive rebounds to stem the scoring run of the Cardinals,” said Rams coach Laura Moore. Lily Zanze had nine second half points and Blattberg had six points as Cate finished the third quarter up, 32-19. In the fourth quarter, Jess Yang grabbed an offensive rebound and put in a reverse layup while getting fouled to help preserve the victory.

January 14 - The Cate girls basketball team beat Villanova, 47-26. “Leading the way in our backcourt defense was Meena Baher who had numerous deflections and steals,” said Rams coach Laura Moore. Maya Blattberg led the way with scoring in the first half with six of her 12 total points before the intermission. “Our backcourt defenders, seniors Jess Yang and Maya Fenelon, junior Lily Zanze, and sophomore Meena Baher, were incredible tonight in their ability to contain a really strong guard from Villanova,” explained Moore. The Rams also had contributions from Baher’s eight, junior Deb Brittain’s eight, sophomore Imani Oseso’s six fourth quarter points, Yang’s six, Zanze’s five and senior Dana Huston-Chen’s two points. The Cate basketball team is 5-2 and the Villanova team is 5-3 as the Rams won Tuesday night at home.

Grace Blankenhorn, Emie Nam, Ma and Charlotte Weis all collected assists on the day and Taylor Kane made seven saves. “Rachel Ma finished the game off in a battle with La Reina’s keeper, scoring on a great cross from Charlotte Weis, credit also needs to go to Neema Mugofwa who absolutely dominated the middle of the field and so intimidated her opponents they were wondering out loud what to do about her,” said Rams coach Taylor Wyatt. “In the last few minutes, Neema took an offensive throw in that reached the middle of the field and the head of Francesca Castellarin who was inches away from scoring the most beautiful goal of the game.” Cate was able to hold the Regents to a scoreless second half.

Rotary started the New Year with a presentation from Brian Kane, owner of the Wellness Center of Carpinteria. Along with several stress-reducing tips, Kane said that “deep sleep is important to good health, and calming routines like reading before going to bed and gentle wake ups involving setting intentions for your day are a significant help to personal wellness.”

United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County named Brian Mendoza from Carpinteria Youth of the Year for their organization. Teen directors and club directors from each of the organization’s sites in the county, select one youth to compete for UBGC Youth of the Year. The top two contestants this year were winner Brian Mendoza and runner-up Monica Bueno from the Westside Unit.

The Carpinteria Unit has now won Youth of the Year for the second year in a row.

Asked what winning the award would mean to him, Mendoza responded, “If I win Youth of the Year, I would be grateful because it means that I have been working hard and doing the right thing to be successful.”

Mendoza is a sophomore at Carpinteria High School, and he shared how UBGC is important to him because the staff is like family. His passion is to teach others to stay focused on their goals, and he feels the club allows him to do this. Additionally, Mendoza explained that he developed an interest in studying sports medicine after suffering a sports concussion.

The evening consisted of a 15-judge panel from Santa Barbara, and youth nominees were asked to share about what the club meant to them. A series of other questions followed, and competitors finished with a speech. Staff members then answered questions about challenges the youth have overcome in their time with the Boys & Girls Club.

Mendoza will next complete at the Coastal Area Council Competition in March. If he wins there, he will then compete for State Youth of the Year honors in Sacramento.

Kindergarten and first-grade students in Danielle Eden’s class at Summerland Elementary School participated in a project-based learning exercise to count all the used markers in the class and send them to Crayola’s Color Cycle program for recycling.

Students deepened their mathematical thinking by grouping markers by tens, and they learned about the benefits of recycling. The total count was 294 recycled markers.

Dr. Pagan briefs DLI parents

On Monday, Jan. 13, Dr. Carlos Pagan, director of language and literacy support curriculum and instruction at the Santa Barbara County Education Office briefed parents on “Pathways to the Seal of Biliteracy”—a designation for high school graduates who demonstrate bi-literacy on standardized state tests. While continuing DLI courses through middle and high school—leading to the State Seal of Biliteracy on students’ diplomas—is part of the DLI master plan adopted by the Carpinteria Unified School District, parents and administrators are looking to ensure that these courses are implemented at the middle school by the time the first cohort of DLI students reach sixth grade in 2023.

That milestone “will be here before you know it,” said Canalino Principal Jaime Persoon.

The first cohort of DLI students in CUSD are currently in second grade— their third year of education taught primarily in Spanish. Coastal View News graphic designer Kris Whittenton traveled with her family over the Thanksgiving holiday, stopping briefly to see General Patton’s Memorial Tank Museum in Chiriaco in Summit, California, before landing in Flagstaff, Arizona. With snow falling the day after Thanksgiving, the Whittentons awoke to over two feet of coverage, and the snow continued to come down for the whole day. They spent time exploring Flagstaff, making snow angels, snowmen, sledding, learning to drive in snow and traveling to the Meteor Crater in Winslow.

The Meteor Crater is the spectacular result of a collision that rocked the American Southwest approximately 50,000 years ago with the energy of more than 20 million tons of TNT.
