THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY It’s a new year, and with it comes toasts for health, wealth and happiness.

While it’s tempting to sit back and rely on the adage, “All good things come to those who wait,” the only way to capture those elusive well-wishes is to take action.

That’s right, you have to do something.

Like what? Writing and sharing your life stories!

As a personal historian, I assist those who wish to record their stories and witness first-hand how lives are enriched with unexpected rewards. Throughout the process, narrators regale others with childhood escapades, clarify their values, fall contemplative at heartaches, gain therapeutic value in recognizing what they’ve survived, unravel a deeper understanding of themselves and their choices and find a great sense of peace in knowing that everything they have accomplished and learned will remain in the hands of their children, grandchildren and future descendants yet unknown.

Therein lies health, wealth and happiness immeasurable.

Invariably, I’m grateful to be on the production end of these legacies, but last month the table turned when I became a narrator as one of 20 participants in the Santa Barbara Center Stage Theater’s “Holiday Memories” performances.

While at first apprehensive about my ability to coherently present my piece in front of an audience, with encouragement, I soon discovered joy in bringing to life a childhood memory about waking to snow on a Christmas morning. My moment on stage was exhilarating and tremendously satisfying, as the act of giving should be, and I found it fun allowing listeners a peek inside at a treasure from my past.

Wondering if my castmates had felt something similar, I put forth the question and received these gracious insights.

Actor/playwright/director Edward Giron said, “(I’ve) written fiction and plays, but when I write about actual events in my life, knowing I’d have a chance of performing them, now that’s a different story. I’ve written twice for the Holiday Memories series and had to remind myself to get to the essence, be truthful and (not to) embellish, and let yourself relive the experience, no matter how painful or joyous, and express it in the writing. The result is not only to be able to relive the memory, but to keep it, and the people in it, alive and always

close in your heart. And maybe also in the hearts of those who read and listen to it.”

Deborah Cristobal, a seasoned actress, made her debut on the personal storytelling front and “learned that sharing my story on stage was a blessing not only for our audience, but for me as well. I enjoyed hearing that people really liked my piece and could relate to it, even though they may have experienced a different situation than mine. A Hispanic lady told me she also felt like she was the only one of her ethnicity growing up, and a gentleman said that he was entertained by my story. This made me feel more connected to people—we are a lot more similar to one another than we think we are.”

Selden Cummings, a Santa Barbaraborn musician and writer, found “it is a rare treat to be able to share details of one’s life experience with a large crowd, especially alongside a group of other storytellers, hitherto strangers. Nowadays, the art of storytelling seems under appreciated. It has not been entirely lost, mind you, but compared to the flashy entertainment afforded by iPhones and action films, the simple act of reciting a story before an audience is nearly unheard of.

Thank God for Center Stage Theater’s willingness to embrace this ancient art form. Who would have thought that nothing more than a voice and an ear is needed to ensure maximum interest and enjoyment for an audience? George Lucas might have saved a great deal of money.”

Susan Miles Gulbransen, a prolific writer, teacher, and current columnist for Noozhawk, related how storytelling has been a part of her life since childhood.

“When life was jammed with chores we would sit down to dinner and tell stories, told by a small child or a grandparent.

They helped us understand who our families were and how life can work out.

Hearing children tell stories also gives adults different perspectives. Stories help us discover more about our world, and understand people facing various situations. Learning about our history, culture and values brings us together with more insight and awareness of each other.”

With this new year comes the opportunity for a new you. Set yourself on the path of fresh discoveries of YOU by taking time for reflection, journaling and sharing, and make this new year the “write” year!

Planning Commission approves Phase II of GranVida

On Jan. 6, the Planning Commission voted unanimously to approve Phase II of Carpinteria’s assisted-living facility––GranVida’s conditional use permit, a lot line adjustment and a coastal development permit. GranVida proposes to build a new 47,300 square foot, two-story, 50-unit assisted-living facility for seniors at 5464 Carpinteria Ave. Units will be sold at market rate, and will not be considered affordable housing, but, given that they are for seniors, they will fulfill up to 50 of the city’s Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA) requirement.

City foregoes EIR on Rincon Trail project to soaring community’s dismay

Monday night’s meeting of the Carpinteria Planning Commission brought heartache to the soaring community, as the project, which may destroy a coveted launching site, passed an important hurdle unscathed.

Commissioners voted 4-1 to adopt the Rincon Trail project’s mitigated negative declaration (SMND)—certifying that no significant impacts on the environment will occur with the project’s construction.

Dozens of members of the soaring community appeared at the public hearing to ask the city to conduct a full environmental impact report (EIR), arguing that it is required by the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). By approving the SMND, commissioners certified that the project meets all CEQA requirements and that an EIR will not be conducted.

The city proposes to build a new 2,800foot public multi-use trail connecting the eastern end of Carpinteria Avenue to Rincon County Beach Park. The trail is intended to provide a safe passageway for cyclists, who currently use Highway 101’s shoulder as a bike path, and pedestrians and joggers, who traverse the train tracks on their treks. The trail is expected to bring a 10 percent increase in park goers to Rincon Beach, which is currently at 500,000 people visiting each year, according to Santa Barbara County Association of Governments.

Additionally, during construction of the trail, the city plans to enact sea-level rise remediation efforts. Workers will stabilize the Bluffs by reducing the slope and revegetating, which will slow runoff and mitigate erosion.

Summarizing the project, Director of Parks, Recreation and Facilities Matt Roberts said, “The Rincon Trail will encourage sustainable, non-motorized, zero-carbon footprint transportation…

places to refuge if a train comes… People are using the freeway shoulder as their bike path. This trail will improve safety in those cases.

“It (will also) stabilize the south facing slope. That is a relic of a rail project from the 1880s. They were myopic in getting the railroad through. It was an engineering feat in its day (but caused many later problems by making the Bluffs vulnerable to severe erosion).”

According to the staff report, the trail project will cause no adverse impact on the environment. CEQA requires an analysis of the physical conditions involved in a project, however, the act does not consider social or economic components.

However, based on studies conducted in preparing the SmnD, planners concluded that the trail project would not cause significant changes to the physical environment, and thus, the city is not required to conduct an eir. while an SmnD is a brief summary describing the reasons why a proposed project will not have a significant environmental impact, an eir is a comprehensive study which provides detailed information about the effect that a proposed project is likely to have on the environment, along with provisions and alternatives to minimize impact. members of the soaring community state that the trail project and erosion combatting measures will irrevocably change the physical landscape, changing the area’s air flow, and making launching from the Bluffs’ “Bates” site dangerous. in a heated discussion on interpreting the state’s law, Commissioner John Callender asked city planners, “Does CEQA contemplate a change in air flow?”

Callender argued that the change in air flow that would impact the free flying community was “clearly” a significant impact to the environment and should trigger an environmental impact report. “if they cannot soar, i don’t see that as a social impact, i see that as a physical impact,” Callender stated. “as i interpret it, it seems straightforward that if in the construction of this site, the wind characteristics are altered, that produces an adverse impact that’s experienced by members of the soaring community.” according to the city’s legal counsel, an eir is not required by CeQa. Callender, however, expressed concern with this conclusion, “in a rush… we may actually expose the city to legal risks in the future because of CeQa. Because this environmental change is so clear and dramatic … they (paragliders and hang gliders) will be motivated to pursue a legal challenge and the city will be forced to defend this decision.” roberts noted that “the perfect outcome” for the city is that the flying community can continue to use the site.

Among the first of the 29 speakers from the public, Derek musashe, vice president of the Santa Barbara Soaring association, articulated the soaring community’s concerns: “this will unequivocally hurt our site. We have been flying here for decades… nothing that we are doing here is illegal. It is not illegal for us to fly here. We are allowed by the FAA to fly exactly here and we have been doing it peacefully for years and years.” musashe argued that an environmental impact report was needed, “that is what this tool is for.” in an email to CVn, musashe further stated, “the soaring community is completely in favor of a bike/pedestrian path connecting the existing bike paths from Ventura and Carpinteria. we simply want the path to be routed in a way that doesn’t destroy most of that coastal bluff at Rincon, irrevocably altering the airflow on that bluff face that not only we use to soar, but also countless coastal soaring birds (pelicans, seagulls, hawks, even California Condors have been observed soaring this site) and monarch butterflies during their migration. it is a very important land feature for soaring animals of all types.”

I moved here specifically because of the flying here… this is a very important site for us… someone flew almost to Santa Paula (recently), (people) fly to Ventura… It’s not just a little local site for us… we’re not an unsanctioned sport. We’re sanctioned to fly in Yosemite Park… we want to be behind this, but we can’t the way it is now.” after nearly four hours of discussion and public comments, the Planning Commission voted 4-1 (Callender dissenting) to adopt and certify the SmnD, foregoing an eir for the rincon trail project. in explaining his decision, Commissioner Glenn LaFevers pointed to the requirements of CeQa and the scope of the commission’s responsibilities, “our charge is to make sure that the document (SmnD) adequately addresses environmental impacts under CeQa… i believe the document adequately addresses environmental impacts.”

For his part, Commissioner David allen was straightforward in defining his decision, “i’m assuming that all of you from the soaring community are correct— that this might change the ability for flying, but i don’t see any requirements by the law for an eir… the bottom line is, you’ve raised an issue on the desirability of the project, but that is something …. when the project comes forward… i’m confident that you’ll be asserting that those interests are important.”

Having passed initial environmental review, the project will now be able to secure additional funds from Caltrans to develop detailed designs to secure permits. Since the project is a joint project with Santa Barbara County and the Coastal Commission, all agencies will work in coordination on designs. the project is expected to be heard next at the architectural review boards of Carpinteria and Santa Barbara County.

Obituaries

Rose Marie Maya (Sanchez) 7/21/1938 – 1/5/2020

Rose Marie Maya (Sanchez) passed away into the arms of Jesus on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020. She was the ninth child of Jesus Sanchez and Rafaela Romero both of Carpinteria, California.

Rose Marie Maya was born on July 21, 1938. She was 81 years old when she passed. She was a mother of 10 children, six boys and four girls. She was married to Victor Maya, who preceded her death.

She is survived by one sister, Josephine Razo; two sons, Victor Maya Jr. and Daniel Maya; four daughters, Olivia Woerz, Lorraine De Alba, Lisa Perez and Victoria Lomeli.

Four sons preceded her in death: Manuel Peralta, Frank “Chuco” Perez, David Perez and Hector Maya.

Rose Marie Maya loved so many and delighted them with her stories of life and history in Carpinteria. She was well known for her love of cooking and serving a meal to anyone who entered her home.

Rose was one who loved her music whether it was Spanish, oldies or even a little hip hop. Her hilarious nature and contagious laugh will always be remembered, especially when she needed someone’s attention.

She lived life for her grandchildren who were numerous: Valentina Peralta, Manuel Peralta Jr., John Dillinger, Laura Dillinger, Rebekah Woerz, David Woerz, Lorissa Lomeli, Deanna Vallejo, Brian De Alba, Tucker De Alba, Bugambillia Maya, Jazmin Maya, Hector Maya, Gardenia Maya, Savanah Maya, Sophia Rose Maya, Elias Flores, Israel Perez, Joseph Mora, Davina Mora, Isaac Miramontes, Brianna Mora and Gabriel Perez, among numerous great-grandchildren.

You will forever be in our hearts and we will think of you every moment of the day. Every now and then we will holler out “Hellooooo?” just to remember how much you made us laugh.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, Jan. 17, 2020, at St. Joseph Church, 1532 Linden Ave., Carpinteria at 10 a.m.

The graveside ceremony will be at 11:15 a.m. at Carpinteria Cemetery, 1501 Cravens Lane. The reception will follow at 1 p.m. at St. Joseph Church Hall, 1532 Linden Ave. The family would like to thank Los Robles Hospice of Oxnard, California, who took very good care of Rose for the remainder of her life. We truly appreciate every extreme your team made to keep Ms. Rosie “Posie” as comfortable as she could be.

Katherine Burns 8/2/1958 – 12/25/2019

Our most precious Katherine Burns passed away peacefully in her sleep on Christmas morning after a four-year battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband Danny Tubbs, her siblings Margaret Bannerman, R. A. van Knapp and Robert Knapp, her step sons Michael Tubbs, Steven Tubbs, Daniel Tubbs, Noah Tubbs and Donny Tubbs, and 10 step grandchildren.

Katherine and Danny have been vacationing in Carpinteria for years and finally purchased a vacation condo at “Sandpiper” on Elm Avenue in 2006.

She would say “we now have a toe in paradise.” They purchased a rental home in 2016 in anticipation of retiring here someday. After her Stage 4 diagnosis in June of 2018, they decided it was time to make the move, and moved to Carpinteria in August of 2018. Shortly after, they found their dream home just blocks from the beach and moved in Dec. 1, 2018.

Katherine enjoyed many walks on the beach, and made a hobby of photographing the beautiful beach scenes, sunrise, sunsets and birds, along with adding to her collection of sea shells. Katherine’s beautiful spirit and kind heart will be greatly missed.

Services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11, at 10:30 a.m. at Crippen Mortuary in La Crescenta.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

Holy spirit, you who made me see everything and showed me the way to reach my ideals. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and who are in all instances of my life with me. I thank you for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. Thank you for your love towards me and my loved ones. Amen Persons must pray the prayer 3 consecutive days without asking the wish. Agatha Van Wingerden 6/12/1924 – 12/27/2019

In the early morning of Dec. 27, 2019, our dear mother, Oma, and great-grandmother, at the age of 95 years, passed into the presence of the Eternal Light. Often in her last years she expressed the desire to have the Good Lord take her to Him. A sudden illness and a short period of suffering preceded her final hours. Her eyes shone with gratitude and peace before she closed them for the last time as she gently took leave of us.

Agatha Van Wingerden was born on June 12, 1924, the youngest of 11 brothers and sisters, to Adrianes and Jacoba Vijverberg in Naaldwijk, the Netherlands.

Much of her younger years were spent learning the skills of homemaking and caring for her ailing mother whom she lost at 16 years old. She met Hank Van Wingerden in the same town, and they were married in 1948. Together they had seven children.

In 1967, Agatha and Hank moved their family from The Netherlands to Carpinteria, California, to grow flowers. They were accompanied by three of Hank’s brothers and one sister and their families. At the age of 43, this was quite a change for her as she had to learn English and find her way in a new land and different culture. Her resourcefulness and resolve were instrumental in managing her household and she was an incredible support to her husband, brother and sisters-in-law in growing a prominent cut-flower business in Carpinteria.

As a mother, her life was centered first and foremost on her children and her husband. If there were medals of honor for mothers and wives, our mother

would certainly have received one. Her dedication and sacrifice for her family were constant and therefore almost indistinguishable of who she was. Her joy and pride were her family.

She was a supportive, patient and loving mother—only wanting to know we were happy. She graciously had an open door and open heart to all who came to visit from near or far, even unannounced.

Their gratitude showed in their comments in the guestbooks that Mom kept over the years. She loved to entertain and was a wonderfully attentive and caring hostess. Her pool parties were memorable and a favorite for all family and friends.

For many years, she brought friendship, meals and flowers to those in need as a volunteer for Meals On Wheels. Her energy was bountiful when someone needed help, particularly the elderly.

When Dad retired, they joined the Lawn Bowling Club in Santa Barbara and made many life-long friends. Additionally, they traveled quite extensively.

Mom loved taking photos and put together beautiful photo albums of their amazing trips.

Her last years were spent at GranVida retirement home in Carpinteria where she was surrounded by friends and the loving care of the staff.

Our father and her husband Hank preceded her in death in 2006. She leaves behind her children Harry (Michele), Adrian (José), Elly (Doug), Ineke (Sipko), Fred (Edith), Carl and Yolanda (John); grandchildren Erik, Kristi, Kami, Katie, Kyla, Christopher, Stephanie, Robert, Tony, Marcos and Silvia; and 18 greatgrandchildren.

Her funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, 1532 Linden Ave. in Carpinteria on Friday, Jan. 10, at 11 a.m., followed by her burial at Carpinteria Cemetery, with a celebration of her life at Carpinteria Lions Club Park.

New year, new laws: California implements statewide laws on guns, drones, circus animals and more As reported in the Los Angeles Times, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed nearly 1,200 new state laws in 2019, many of which took effect on day one of 2020. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the biggest changes to state law.

Guns

In California, the legal age to be able to buy a semi-automatic rifle is now 21 or over.

If a person is banned from having a gun in any state, they can no longer legally possess one in California.

One-year gun seizures from those who are thought to pose a danger to themselves or others can be extended annually for up to five years.

Starting in September 2020, employers, co-workers and teachers can file for a gun-violence restraining order against a person. Up till now only families and law enforcement were able to petition for restraining orders and gun seizures.

Healthcare

For parents seeking a medical exemption from vaccinations for their children, doctors will be required to use a new standardized form.

Doctors that issue five or more vaccination exemptions after Jan. 1, 2020, will be reviewed by the state.

Starting in 2021, parents must submit existing vaccination exemptions to the state in 2021.

California now requires by law that all residents have health insurance. Penalties for failing to enroll in a healthcare plan will be assessed when 2021 taxes are filed.

Women seeking birth control pills through apps such as one offered by Planned Parenthood will no longer have to participate in video conferencing with a health professional to receive a prescription.

Employers can no longer require current or new workers to agree to arbitration as a condition of having a job.

Voting

Californians will now be able to register to vote or change their party registration on election day at any local polling place.

Housing

Landlords will now be prohibited from raising rates more than 5 percent plus inflation each year.

Landlords can no longer refuse to rent to a person whose rent will be partially paid with a Section 8 voucher.

California homeowners will face less restrictions to build accessory dwelling units, i.e. “granny flats.”

State anti-discrimination laws will now apply to renting apartments or homes through companies such as Airbnb and VRBO.

Criminal justice

California officials can no longer sign contracts to use private, for-profit prisons.

Law enforcement officers can use deadly force only when it’s “necessary in defense of human life.”

California’s ban on circuses using tigers, elephants, monkeys or other wild animals came into effect at the start of 2020. Circuses separate elephants from their mothers as babies and spend most of their lives in chains, PETA reports.

Sexual assault evidence collected through rape kits must be submitted to a crime lab within 20 days and tested within 120 days.

The state’s civil statute of limitations for childhood sexual abuse allegations has been extended for 14 additional years, allowing some to file claims up to age 40.

Environment and wildlife

Trophy hunting of bobcats is illegal for at least the next five years, pending state wildlife officials approving a plan to preserve the animals’ overall population.

Smoking is now illegal in most parts of California state parks and beaches.

New oil drilling in California will be prohibited from running pipelines across state-owned land.

Products that contain microbeads (found in some facial scrubs, soaps and toothpaste) are now illegal to sell in California.

In California, it is now illegal to trap animals for the sale or use of their fur.

Circuses that use animals other than domesticated dogs, cats or horses can no longer operate in California.

Privacy

California will now prohibit surveillance by drones and other electronic equipment in places where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy.

Consumers in California can now opt out of information sharing. They can also request that companies delete their personal data.

Food handlers will be required to take training on major food-based allergens.

Those who seek a state-issued food handler card will have until the end of 2020 to complete training.

Education

Children whose parents have unpaid school lunch bills can’t be denied access to meals, (including an alternate meal selection). In these instances, shaming or treating children differently than other students is prohibited.

Charter school teachers are now required to hold the same credentials as those in traditional public schools. Existing charter school teachers have five years to obtain their credentials.

Students up to fifth grade can no longer be suspended for disrupting school activities or willful defiance. Sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders will also be protected from such suspensions for the next five years.

Schools must update records to accurately reflect a former student’s name or gender if changes have been made to the person’s official government identification. This includes reissuing high school diplomas, GEDs and transcripts, as needed.

Workplace

Businesses using independent contractors will now be subject to tighter restric-

Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) Notice of Public Meeting for Formation of Joint Powers Authority (JPA) for the Purposes of Forming a Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA) and Developing and Implementing a Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP) Carpinteria Valley Water District, the City of Carpinteria, the Santa Barbara County Water Agency and the County of Ventura collectively are forming a Joint Powers Authority (JPA) for the purposes of forming a Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA) and developing and implementing a Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP) as defined by the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). A meeting of the Board of Directors for the JPA will be held January 28th at 6:00 PM at the Casitas Municipal Water District offices, 1055 Ventura Ave, Oak View, CA 93022. A second meeting will be held on January 29th at 5:30 PM at the Carpinteria Valley Water District offices, 1301 Santa Ynez Ave in Carpinteria. These meetings will serve as public hearings required by Water Code Section 10723b for the designation of the JPA to be the GSA for Carpinteria Groundwater Basin under the SGMA. At the meeting on the 29th, the matter will be considered by the Board, public comment will be received, and the Board of Directors will have the option to adopt a Resolution authorizing the designation of the JPA as the GSA. Suspects in Carpinteria Eye Care burglary caught on tape

On Jan. 3, at 1:39 a.m., Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Carpinteria Eye Care, 1013 Casitas Pass Road. Upon their arrival they discovered that the store’s door lock had been removed and 60 pairs of glasses were taken. The stolen merchandise is valued between $8,000 and $15,000.

The suspects forcibly entered the business with a 50-gallon trashcan. They opened display cases with keys which were left in the locks, removing and placing the pairs of glasses into the trashcan. Video footage shows that the suspect who entered the closed business had a friend waiting outside and was in the store for one minute and three seconds. The video footage is being processed and will be provided to law enforcement. Several latent prints were lifted at the crime scene.

Plastic and polystyrene regulations implemented

The city of Carpinteria’s new plastic and polystyrene regulations went into effect on Jan. 1 of this year. Food providers are now prohibited from giving out single-use plastic straws and cutlery, but may provide certified compostable or marine degradable straws and cutlery to customers upon request. Condiments and plastic cup lids will also be given upon request only.

The new regulations are the most recent efforts by the city to promote sustainability in the community. The city was on the leading edge of environmental legislation when it enacted its single use plastic bag ban in 2012. In 2019, City Council approved this recent round of regulations to further reduce the amount of waste produced in Carpinteria.

Credit union offers $400,000 in scholarships

Golden 1 Credit Union in Goleta announced it will award $400,000 in scholarships to qualified students through its annual scholarship program. The application period is open now until Jan. 30. The scholarships provide credit union members and their dependents up to $20,000 over four years to attend full-time, accredited, nonprofit colleges and universities in California. Recipients are selected based on their academic achievements, community involvement, extracurricular activities, and their educational and career goals.

Eligible applicants must have a 3.0 or higher cumulative grade point average, maintained involvement in extracurricular activities for a minimum of 24 hours over the last year, and be a current Golden 1 member or dependent of a member for a minimum of one year. Volunteers needed for the 2020 Homeless Point-In-Time Count

Santa Barbara County, the Santa Maria/Santa Barbara County Continuum of Care (CoC) and the Northern Santa Barbara County United Way invite volunteers to participate in the countywide 2020 Homeless Point-In-Time Count from 5:30-8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29. The Point-In-Time Count is the annual count of individuals and families experiencing homelessness on a given day.

Teams of volunteers and experts will canvas assigned routes throughout the county and will briefly document who is experiencing homelessness. This information is used to plan local homeless assistance systems and raise public awareness. Volunteers will be trained to help count on the survey day. To volunteer, sign up at LiveUnitedSBC. org. “We can’t do this without volunteers,” said Emily Allen, of the United Way Home for Good Santa Barbara County. “Santa Barbara County residents have proven they know that everyone in this community counts.”

Nomura chairs award-winning float, presents city proclamation

“The Power of Hope” was the theme of the New Year’s Day 2020 Tournament of Roses Parade, and the Rotary float entry, chaired by Carpinteria Rotarian Wade Nomura, won the Tournament Volunteer Award for the most outstanding floral presentation among floats 35-feet and under. Featuring Penelope the Penguin taking a fantasy flight around the world, the float combined the Tournament of Roses’ theme with Rotary International’s theme of “Hope Connects the World.”

Optimist International (represented at the parade by Optimist President Adrian Elcock and his wife Ann, from Barbados) and Rotary have made plans to collaborate on future projects and events. Nomura said, “We have been working on this collaboration for some time through an International Summit we sponsor that brings together the International Presidents of Rotary, Optimists, Lions and Kiwanis. We are delighted to report that as a result of their recent summit, in April 2020, these four powerhouse service organizations will meet to create an action plan to collaborate and expand their local and global impact.”

Additionally, on another visit to Pasadena in his capacity as mayor of Carpinteria, Nomura presented the Donate Life/OneLegacy organization with a Carpinteria City Proclamation, declaring April as DMV Donate Life California month. OneLegcay/ Donate Life is the largest organ recovery agency, serving 20 million people, 200-plus hospitals and 11 transplant centers.

Though the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1912, incorporated in 1934, the annual Community Awards Banquet was first held in 1958.

Originally named the “Citizen of the year” event, outstanding individuals were recognized for their community service. The event was renamed the “Carpinterian of the year” and later changed to the “Community awards Banquet” and is the Chamber’s signature event of the year. COASTAL BUREAU OPERATIONS DECEMBER 29 – JANUARY 4

Tuesday, Dec. 31

9:15 a.m. / Traffic Collision / 4700 block Carpinteria Avenue

Deputies responded to a traffic collision where a semi-truck and trailer collided with a large gas line. Carpinteria Fire responded and requested several apartments nearby evacuated. Fire kept running water on the gas main until the Gas Co. was able to close the line. Traffic was diverted by deputies for 2 hours and 15 minutes. No injuries.

2:07 p.m. / Public Intoxication / 1000 block Casitas Pass Road

Deputies were dispatched to a female in the street possibly Under the Influence.

Deputies contacted a woman who was intoxicated and unable to care for her own safety or the safety of others. She was arrested for public intoxication and booked at Santa Barbara County Jail.

12:11 a.m. / Medical-Welfare Check

A caller reported hearing a male subject outside their house yelling for help.

Upon arrival, a subject was seen on the sidewalk with severe head trauma. The subject was transported to Goleta Valley Hospital.

Wednesday, Jan. 1

12 p.m. / Battery / 9th Street at Yucca Lane

A caller found a male laying on the sidewalk bleeding and asking for help.

Deputies were dispatched and contacted

the male, who reported that he was assaulted. The male was intoxicated and was unable to maintain his balance. The reporting party wanted to help the male, so she stayed on scene. The male claims that two men took his phone charger and passport and punched him in the face.

Thursday, Jan. 2

7:22 a.m. / Arson / 4400 block Via Real

A man was arrested for arson after he was observed lighting magazines on fire that were in a display against a building.

The man stated he was homeless and bored. He was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Friday, Jan. 3

2 a.m. / Drinking in Public / Hickory Street

A caller reported that a man was at the address above and drunk. Deputies found him outside the residence with an open beer and a cigarette. The subject was told to drop the beer and he chugged the entire beer. He was arrested and booked at Santa Barbara County Jail.

DUNCAN’S REEL DEAL M AT T D U N C A N Uninitiated here again. “Star Wars” uninitiated, that is. Which is just to say, I’m not a fanboy. I’m not a master of that universe. It’s just not my thing.

Disclaimer over. Now for the recap.

Remember: The rebels are on the run.

It looked like they were toast, but that hologram-force-ghost Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) slowed down Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) just enough to preserve a sliver of hope.

As “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” opens, the rebels have regrouped a bit, the Millenium Falcon gang—Poe (Oscar Isaac), Finn (John Boyegga), and Chewy (Joonas Suotamo)—are out looking for ways to defeat the Empire, and everyone’s hero, Rey (Daisy Ridley), is busy training for an inevitable showdown with, among others, Kylo Ren. Speaking of Kylo Ren, it’s not just him anymore. He’s in league with a reborn/ cloned Frankstein-y Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). Somehow Palpatine has this whole massive fleet of Star Destroyers ready to rock on behalf of what he calls the “Final Order” (I guess like “The Final Solution”?). And he wants Kylo Ren to be

part of it. All he has to do is kill that pesky Jedi, Rey. So Kylo Ren heads out. But, as usual, he has a slightly different agenda. He intends to convert Rey to the Dark Side. And he intends to do that by revealing an interesting little nugget about her past—about her origins.

But will it sway her? Or will Kylo Ren back down? Or be defeated? Will the rest of the rebels find a way to fend off the onslaught? And what of Palpatine?

You could probably guess the answers to most of these questions. After all, this Disney-run franchise isn’t going to stray too far from their winning formula.

Especially when the “Star Wars” bag of tricks—what’s needed to round all of the plot’s squares—evinces an ever-increasing vastness. Holograms, force ghosts, healing powers, psycho-telecommunication— there’s no stopping these characters (or, really, these writers) from ending up where they want to be.

Which I guess takes some of the drama out of it. Your favorite character could be blown up, chopped up into little bits, thrown into a bottomless pit, lasered, tasered, light-sabered … but if J. J. Abrams’ formula doesn’t want them dead, they ain’t dead.

Still, I’ve got to admit, I had a good time.

That’s coming from someone who is neither “Star Wars” initiated nor much amused by crazy action for its own sake. Especially enjoyable are the Rey-Ren scenes. They’ve got such chemistry. Their exploits in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” are … well, they’re just kind of cool, I guess.

A hot meal goes a long way: Carpinteria’s “Lunch Bunch”

This holiday season, as we reflect on events and actions from this past year and we make resolutions for the new one, CVN has been spotlighting individuals in the Carpinteria Valley community who have shown extraordinary generosity of spirit and service in 2019.

This week, in our last installation of the series, we get to know Leah Wagner who is a volunteer with the community’s hot lunch program. Also known as “The Lunch Bunch,” Leah belongs to a passionate and eclectic group of volunteers who come together each week to provide a warm meal to those in need.

Along with a hot meal, the group provides a centralized location for local service organizations such as AmeriCorps, United Way and a medical professional to provide critical services to the homeless community. These services include provision of basic necessities, basic medical treatment and rehabilitation services for relocating and housing.

The hot lunch volunteer group meets and serves food every Wednesday at the Veterans Memorial Building Meeting Room from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Leah and her husband Dan have been married for 28 years and raised their three children in Carpinteria. In addition to volunteering, she is a licensed realtor at MurphyKing Real Estate. For Leah, volunteering is about “sharing yourself with others without the expectation of anything in return.”

CVN: What do you do for the hot lunch program?

Leah Wagner: I help keep us organized!

I send weekly emails, keeping our group aware of who is providing the weekly lunch, as well as communicating any needs we may have for that upcoming weekly lunch. I also do social outreach in the community to educate and raise awareness of the services we offer.

What motivated you to get involved?

I’m a people person. I have had a heart for the homeless population since I was a teenager. About 10 years ago, I read the book, “Under the Overpass,”

I believe it is important for everyone to contribute to their community. We are stronger together when we all chip in and help. There are many causes in our community that could use some extra hands.

I encourage everyone to find something that takes the focus off yourself and to give back. We all like to receive but sometimes it’s better to give!

Making a fine start to a new decade

A selection of Carpinteria artist Pamela Enticknap’s clay and acrylic work will be on view at GraySpace Gallery, 219 Gray Ave. in the Funk Zone, Santa Barbara, in the upcoming exhibition, “Three Sides of a Coin.� The show will open on Jan. 17, with an artist reception from 5 to 8 p.m.

The show’s title, “Three Sides of a Coin,� refers to the three artists, Pamela Enticknap, Ruth Ellen Hoag and William Lawrence, who are presenting figurative works in sculpture, acrylic and oil on paper. The exhibition will run through Feb. 23.

Enticknap’s newest series, “Cast of Characters,â€? are small painted sculptures that comment on cultural requirements and “Vanity,â€? by Pamela Enticknap. the way we live and work in our society. Underlying this series is a bit of irony, a great deal of humor, some criticism and a touch of nostalgia. The artist has maintained a studio in Carpinteria since 1998, where her focus is on ďŹ gurative art in many mediums. Enticknap’s works are inspired by a sense of time and place which has been described as “dense with characteristic energy and emotional richness.â€?

Brooklyn, New York-based band The Bergamot will play brewLAB on Tuesday, Jan. 14, at 7 p.m., bringing their haunting vocals to Carpinteria. “Everything we do is meant to give people hope and meet them where they’re at,� said Jillian Speece, co-lead singer for The Bergamot with her husband Nathaniel Paul.

Warriors close out Pacifica before entering CCL play

The Tritons of Pacifica High School in Oxnard traveled to Warriors Gym on Saturday, Jan. 4 for a non-league matchup in boys basketball. Though it was the Tritons who scored the first seven points of the game, Carpinteria hung on for a 56-52 win. The victory raises the Warriors over the .500 mark on the year to 7-6, as they prepare for the opening of Citrus Coast League (CCL) play. Meanwhile, the loss dropped the visitors to 4-13 on the year.

“We knew they were going to 1-2-2 press us. It’s just a lot different going against guys who practice it every day, than going against our own team. We don’t do it, it’s really hard to simulate that in practice,” explained Warriors coach Scott Sorich.

However, the Tritons were able to keep pace as Jose Porras knocked down a pair of treys to make it 26-24. Carpinteria ended the half on a high note with Ryan Nakasone and Ian Reed each knocking down shots from behind the arc to put their team up 32-26 at the intermission.

Another three points from Reed extended the lead to 35-28, and when the senior found Nakasone wide open in the lane for a lay-in, the Warriors were up by eight with 3:56 to play in the third quarter.

Pacifica, whose football team recently captured the CIF-SS 2A State Championship, began to muscle their way inside as six-foot, five-inch Devin Aupui and six-foot, two Ryan Lynch-Cole converted some close-range shots to cut the lead to two. Exhibiting some good team defense, Carpinteria was still able to hold onto a 43-39 lead going into the fourth quarter.

“I was just talking to our team, and told them from our first game till today, it’s a drastic improvement,” said Sorich.

The two schools went back and forth in the final quarter with Carpinteria going up by as many five, and the Tritons managing to cut the margin to two. A three-pointer at the baseline by Matthew Garcia and a tip-in by Medel once again made it a five-point game with a little over a minute to play. But another trey by Porras trimmed the lead down to 54-52 with 48 seconds left.

The Warriors were then able to run down the clock, and Handall knocked down two key free throws with five seconds left to seal the deal. Handall led the team in scoring with 13 points, and Reed and Medel also tallied 10. Nakasone pitched in eight and Dylan O’Neill registered seven. Lynch-Cole led all scorers with 15.

“I tell our players each and every day at practice, in everything that we do, everybody on the court is an option,” said Sorich.

December 28 - The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team defeated Grace Brethren, 82-45. Dylan O’Neill led the way with 34 points, nine rebounds and two assists. Mateo Handall delivered 19 points and four assists, while Gabe Medel contributed seven points and six rebounds. Jojo Gonzalez pitched in with seven points, four rebounds and two assists, while Luke Nakasone registered six points, five rebounds and two assists. Ian Reed chipped in two points, five rebounds and six assists. The Warriors improved to 6-6 on the season.

January 7 - The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to beat Fillmore on the road, 63-54 in their Citrus Coast League opener. Dylan O’Neill was the game’s high scorer with 21 points and grabbed six rebounds to go along with three steals on the night. Mateo Handall poured in 20 points, while Ian Reed knocked down eight points and had three assists. The Flashes jumped out to a 19-9 first quarter lead but the Warriors outscored the home team, 23-11 in the third quarter to take a 46-45 lead going into the final quarter. Chris Cisneros led Fillmore in scoring with 16 points and nabbed seven rebounds, while teammate Davis Flores knocked down 14 points, and dished out six assists. The Flashes’ Fabian Estrada also stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points and eight rebounds. The victory improves Carpinteria’s record to 8-6 overall, and 1-0 in the CCL.

Girls water polo

January 7 - The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team visited the Hueneme Vikings on the eve of the Warriors return from winter break, swimming away with a 21-3 win. Sophomore Briana Rodriguez in the first quarter had three goals and two more throughout the game. Alex Zapata, her sophomore counterpart, had four assists and six goals throughout the game.

“The Warriors were low in numbers due to some athletes still being on break, but still came in swinging,” said Carpinteria coach Sergio Castaneda. The Warriors face off against another Citrus Coast League opponent, Nordhoff, on Thursday (Jan. 8) at home before taking on the Malibu Sharks on Friday (Jan. 9) at the “Shark Tank.” Carpinteria overall is 4-2 and in the CCL is 2-0.

Two Warriors named to All-South Coast Football Team

A pair of Carpinteria High School seniors, Jacob Mata and Diego Hernandez were named to the All-South Coast Football Team during the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s press luncheon on Monday, Jan. 6, at Harry’s Plaza Cafe in Santa Barbara.

Mata was recognized for his strong play on offense as a wing back. He also played defense as a linebacker for the Warriors. Hernandez was credited for his strong defensive back work and sportsmanship as a wide receiver.

“Both players are very deserving of their award and will be truly missed next season,” said Carpinteria coach Mario Robinson. “They both represent what Carp football is all about: ‘Warrior Spirit Never Dies.’”

CHS girls water polo team achieves NumberFour ranking

The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team claimed a spot in the CIF-SS Division Six rankings, being placed at Number-Four in a poll released last week.

Citrus Coast League foe, Santa Paula, grabbed the Number-Six spot. The Warriors who have recently started CCL play are 4-2 overall and 2-0 in league. They’ll face off against another league opponent, Nordhoff, on Thursday (Jan. 9) at the Carpinteria Community Pool with a 3:15 p.m. ball drop.

One man, various farms and a deep well of surfing CVN

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH “Jim, you’re doing great,” a man says. “i’m an experienced surfer,” my friend Jim Denevan replies, as if to explain how he’s pulling off a farm dinner for 80 guests on location where any number of things can go wrong, from inclement weather to a high-tide rogue wave swamping the end of the table. another good friend, Patrick trefz, has made a film about all this titled, “Man in the field: the Life and art of Jim Denevan,” screening at the Lobero theater in Santa Barbara on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 7:30 p.m., and at the Metro 3 on Monday, Jan. 20, at 11:40 a.m., as part of the Santa Barbara international film festival, and i cannot recommend it highly enough— not because it’s the creation of a couple of Santa cruz pals of mine, but because it represents two artists at the pinnacle of their respective careers thus far: trefz as a filmmaker, and Denevan as a land artist and cultural innovator with his “Outstanding in the field” farm-to-table dinners that he puts on across the country and internationally as well. it would be enough for trefz to have documented the low-tide beach drawings Denevan creates with a piece of driftwood and a landscaping rake, and to have made the point that it was Denevan who started the whole farm-to-table movement in the mid-90s at a little farm in the Pogonip up in Santa cruz. But as a true documentarian, he stays with Denevan through silences that open to reveal deeper influences and traumas that underpin everything he does. i knew some of Jim’s stories because we became friends as i was working my way through cabrillo Junior college and Uc Santa cruz, and i fell in with the surfing crew up there—and he, a few years older than me and the guys i was hanging with, had a reputation as one

Jim Denevan at home at Pleasure Point, Santa Cruz—his trusty Pearson Arrow round-pin Twin Fin at the ready. of the top surfers at Pleasure Point on the east Side. i suppose we forget how different the time was before: not only ancestor time, but even just pre-internet time. email was a thing and Silicon Valley was a vague presence “over the hill” in San Jose circa 1994, but the vestiges of Neil Young living up in La Honda, Dead shows at the filmore in San francisco and runaway kids on high doses of LSD made a much larger and more presently felt impact. as did guys like Denevan, who weren’t necessarily the most welcoming, but who carried an air of deep knowledge and skill.

He’s an imposing presence at well over six feet tall with a linebacker’s build, but he surfs with fluidity and joy in swooping arcs across the glimmering green walls of his beloved first Peak at Pleasure Point.

Not surprising to me anyway, he’s always

preferred twin fin surfboards. Still, the film isn’t really about surfing, except in the old Tom Morey sense of everything in life being a form of surfing—and man, has Denevan ridden some waves, both literal and metaphoric. i won’t spoil it by doing a recap, but if great art is born out of pain and suffering then Denevan comes to it honestly. and it’s hard to say which is the greater achievement: Denevan’s cooking, or his land art. if pressed to choose, i’d say it’s the latter. Now, i can describe the concentric circles he draws on the wide canvases of lonely Northern california beaches, but it’s difficult to convey the precise symmetry of the work, and the scale that he achieves. an X-shape, each line 1,000 yards long and cut perfectly straight, tapering away evenly. the circles-within-triangles, visible by satellite, a mile across on a desert

pan somewhat out in the american West. there is something of the mandala, or sacred geometry, to the pieces. Perhaps a touch of madness too in his singular, almost compulsive focus. it runs in the family. and not “zany,” or merely “wild,” but true, debilitating mental illness—not in Denevan, but in three of his brothers. as a person who knows what it is to have had a close family member in the grips of insanity, I can say with confidence that one doesn’t get through it without getting some overspray on him or herself.

At one point in the film Denevan says “(i’m) constantly transcending my condition,” and if that’s not surfing than I can’t say what is. “You shouldn’t be afraid of people,” he says a little further on, which is so typical of the man i knew in Santa cruz, though we haven’t seen each other in a long time. But that’s how he speaks, in short declarations. there’s an assertiveness that carries authority but is never shrill, or even harsh. i suppose it’s called truth. Denevan speaks the truth.

Never more so than when he says, “it’s all very meaningful, the connections with people, with earth, land, water and atmosphere—those things are very profound and powerful.” for 20 years, Denevan’s crew with Outstanding in the field has been coming to the coleman family farm here in carpinteria, and with the bounty of this region and his culinary skill—whether cooking himself or via the chefs he brings on—one can imagine a meal for the memory books with the soft light of a summer evening glowing off the Santa Ynez range. the next Outstanding in the field meal in carpinteria appears to be already sold out, but for more information on Denevan’s extraordinary organization, visit outstandinginthefield.com.

Amanda McIntyre braved a brisk wind and frigid temperatures at the North 1025 CASITAS PASS RD Cape of Norway where the Norwegian Sea meets the Barents Sea. The Northernmost point in Europe, Nordkapp, is marked by the globe sculpture pictured.

SURF Norway’s North Cape was the site of several naval incursions during WWII, DIRECTION 50 YEARS and in 2009 the Trans-Europe Foot Race—a 2,000-mile eventCELEBRATING starting from Bari, WIND Italy—ended there. A bike race from North Cape to the south ofOF Norway is also CARPINTERIA & held, and the record finish time is four days, 22 hours.
