From the mountains to the sea

After a night of steadily increasing showers, an inch of rain lashed down in 20 minutes between 3:51 and 4:11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 9, driving ashen-mud and debris down the watersheds of Carpinteria, Summerland and Montecito. The blaze-scarred mountains could not hold under the deluge, and the coastline is awash in the backcountry remnants of the Thomas Fire. Carpinterians’ neighbors in Montecito have fared much worse, with 100 homes destroyed and a rising death toll. Emergency response officials warn that even as communities begin to clean up and assess the damage from Tuesday’s storm, future rain events this winter may pose continuing threats to flood-prone areas.

Powerful rains trigger debris flows, threaten homes

Arroyo Paredon at Foothill Road in Carpinteria, about a mile east of the Santa Barbara Polo Field, is normally a California paradise of oak groves and sycamore trees. But early Tuesday morning, on Jan. 9, the boulder-lined creek bed became a superhighway of ashen-mud and snapped trees as fire-charred hillsides gave way upstream in a deluge of rain.

“We heard a loud rumbling, the windows were rattling, it sounded like a freight train,” reported Nan Brooks, who lives with her husband Conrad on the east side of the seasonal creek. “We could hear trees snapping and we grabbed our boots and our dog and ran to our car, blaring the horn (to warn the neighbors) as we got out of there.”

Room-sized boulders careened down the creek bed like enormous billiard balls and 30-foot sections of broken trees piled against the one-lane bridge at Foothill Road, the creek banks overflowing both east and west. The Boersema property on the east side of the bridge was inundated by a 3- to 4-foot slurry of mud and limbs, and a paddock was destroyed on the south side of Foothill Road to the west, where the Playa Del Sur 4H Club kept their five steers.

Fortunately, Ron Viera the 4H advisor, acting on advice from a friend and a personal sense that he should move the animals, had taken them out of the paddock the night before the downpour.

Ben Boersema’s wife Maude and their two children had evacuated, as they did during the Thomas Fire, but Ben remained to look after their home and property as he had done, along with his neighbors Nan and Conrad, and Sally and Arnie Brooks, during the fire.

Ben described coming outside to check drains as the rain intensified in the early hours of Tuesday morning. The sound he heard coming down the creek bed made him flee for his life, and he and the Brookses described an instinctual, “fight-or-flight” response to the sound of the fast-approaching mud, boulders and snapping trees. Sally Brooks said that her husband Arnie, a firefighter with 30 years of service, told her that their escape from the mudslide was among the most terrifying moments in his life.

By first light, neighbors who had stayed through the night wandered onto Foothill Road to assess the damage. News trucks and camera crews interviewed people and filmed Peter Lapidus at work on his bulldozer. Lapidus, who owns Peter Lapidus Construction, lives nearby

By the afternoon of Jan. 9, Peter Lapidus had cleared the boulders from Foothill Road on the west side of the bridge, but continues to push a seemingly endless slurry of mud and ash throughout the day. and had known that after the heavy rain the creek area would be a mess.

A neighbor from farther up along Arroyo Paredon drove a tracked Kubota tractor in the morning and began clearing mud from the back corner of the house along with Jason Lesh and Conrad and Arnie Brooks, who used shovels to remove the mud and debris that had piled up against the glass-walled living room of the classic, modernist home designed in 1960 and known as the Slocum House. A feature in the current issue of Carpinteria Magazine (Winter 2018) details the history of the Slocum House.

Had a single boulder in the massive debris flow taken a slightly more easterly trajectory, the Boersemas’ home could have easily been destroyed. The massive flooding of 1969 had filled the house with four-feet of water and debris. By Tuesday afternoon, much of the mud had been cleared from against the house, although a wide swath, several feet deep, still covered the property out to Foothill Road.

The devastation to Arroyo Paredon is slight compared to the tragedy that has befallen Montecito, where 15 people are confirmed dead and many remain missing as of press time Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Jan. 9, 2018 is not the first time the creek through Arroyo Paredon overflowed its

banks, as Lew Goodfield noted, pointing out that when his family moved to Foothill Road in the late 1940s, their property a few hundred yards east of the creek, was still strewn with boulders from the flooding of 1914—a testament to the power of flashfloods that can rush down from the Santa Ynez range.

She was always behind the scenes until the cameras were rolling for Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Education meetings, at which point Executive Assistant Jolene Colomy occupied the quietly important seat at the end of the table. She took fastidious notes and became a recognizable face near the podium from which stakeholders in the school district often passionately petitioned the school board. Her duty was always paramount to her public performance, to impartially and legally conduct school district business.

“My job is—I’m Switzerland—I move things along according to law and process,” Colomy said.

In reflecting on her career, she said one of the greatest strengths she brought to the task of organizing meeting agendas and taking minutes was her prior experience as a paralegal. She was a natural fact finder, working as several superintendents’ right hand and also proficient at synthesizing information that would become the ingredients of public discussion about the business of the school district—an institution of import to the community and always among the top employers in Carpinteria.

Colomy, a Summerland resident, sat behind the desk as the administrative assistant at Summerland School before her promotion to the district office. Upon making the jump, she missed her quality time with students but still found her duties rewarding in the knowledge that the ultimate goal of the administration is to benefit kids in classrooms.

“I didn’t have direct contact with parents and children anymore, like I did as a school secretary, but the purpose is all about the children,” she said.

Two of those students in the district happened to be her own daughters, Aimee and Lauren, who both graduated from Carpinteria High School and have begun careers in education. Lauren is an aide at Canalino School while she completes her master’s degree to become a speech specialist.

“That was a great thing about working here, having my daughters in school and the flexibility to be involved. If there was a track meet, I could go over and see it,”

she said.

When Colomy started as executive assistant in October 2002, Sandra Smyser was the superintendent. Then Paul Cordeiro took the helm for nearly a decade. Following that relatively long tenure, the school district most recently saw a revolving door of administrators over a period of two years that included one superintendent, two interim superintendents and an administrator in charge. Colomy lent her experience to the new executives to ride out the recent changes.

Reflections on a winter for the record books CVN

People: We need a break! Fires, floods—are locusts next? Homes, farmland, supposed-to-be-relaxing holidays and that comforting feeling of normalcy have been lost. But as they say, it’s not what you see, it’s how you look at it.

We—I!—need to find some silver linings in these clouds! So I have looked for the good in all this, and I ended up with some resolution-like thoughts that feel fitting for a new year.

Toward the beginning of the fire, on Dec. 9, I attended the celebration of life for a friend who committed his life to being a public servant as a wildland firefighter.

Stan was a Hotshot, one of those guys who defies the human instinct for selfpreservation and jumps out of helicopters into the backcountry to fight fires. Not all members of his Hotshot family were there, given the active fire in Ventura, but his crew arranged to dedicate that day for Stan’s memory. The Hotshots’ commitment to each other and to the communities of people they don’t even know but are prepared to serve was striking and inspiring, especially as ash fell from the sky.

These firefighters were all-in celebrating Stan and shaping his son’s memories of him that day. I want to be as dedicated to the people I believe in as they are. I want to be prepared to take risks to make my corner of the world a safer place like they do (though my approach will be gentler than jumping out of any flying machine).

And I want to know when to let that seriousness of purpose go so I can play and wholeheartedly enjoy being with my people like the Hotshots do.

We need our people—no doubt about it. Photos of our people are special, and a few important papers certainly allow us to glide through the business of life more easily. But honestly, how important is the rest of our stuff? Our real treasures are the memories our photos elicit and the opportunity to fill our hearts and create more memories. Our meaningful connections with other people and our stories of time shared—that’s what’s important when you get down the essence. I aim to be lighter on stuff (my closet’s too full anyway), to cherish happy memories and to truly be with my people and create new joyful memories with them.

I want to be prepared to take risks to make my corner of the world a safer place like they do (though my approach will be gentler than jumping out of any flying machine).

Professionally, too, during this awful month, we at the Children’s Project, like everyone else, got down to basics: “Are you safe? How can we best help our children and families stay safe?” I will never forget sitting with our Office Manager Stefany—both of us wearing our N95 masks—running payroll while watching the fire come down the hills as night fell.

Thank you, Stefany.

My hat is off to those at the school district and other public-serving organizations who focused on the basics of air quality and cleanliness and gave up holiday plans and weekends so they could reopen as quickly as possible.

Thank you. Thank you, too, to the folks like our custodian Irma who came along after the power washing and numerous spray-downs and hunted down the ash that hid in the nooks and crannies to be sure all the kiddos could safely play. It takes a village.

I aim to remember what was so obvious during this traumatic month—everyone is doing the best they can do, and everyone wants to share their gifts and contribute to taking care of our community.

It may be a while before normal feels normal. May our new normal be infused with lessons reinforced by the silver linings in the last month’s clouds. And may those locusts stay far, far away from Carpinteria!

William Donald “Don” Adams, son of William Rudolph and Veda Marie Adams, born Nov. 14, 1927, in Oakland, Calif., passed away in Carpinteria, Calif., on Dec. 28, 2017, at 90 years of age. Don is survived by his wife, Doris, of 64 years, and preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Fred and Veda. He is survived by his siblings Jim, Mary and Irene; his four sons Mike, Steve, Bill and Jim (wife Beth); his 10 grandchildren; and his five great-grandchildren.

Don was a native Californian and spent his entire life in California. He started working for Hughes Aircraft in 1947. In 1971, he transferred from El Segundo to Santa Barbara Research Center (SBRC) and later on to Santa Barbara Remote Sensing (SBRS) in Goleta as a Quality Assurance Engineer. He retired in 1996. Don had plenty of stories about his early years including meeting Howard Hughes twice and watching the Spruce Goose fly in Long Beach Harbor.

He loved his family, the family pets, driving to the store, going to the donut shop, the casino and scratch off tickets.

He spent many years attending family ball games and performances. He always wanted to help and be involved. He was dearly loved by his family and friends.

He will be greatly missed.

Esther flew peacefully with the Angels at midnight as the fireworks were bursting in the air to welcome in the New Year 2018 surrounded by her family at the age of 91. She lived at Samarkand Retirement Community for the past two years.

Esther was born Aug. 1, 1926 in Indianapolis, Ind. Her family moved to Los Angeles in her teenage years. She married Frank Joseph Chufar on Oct. 14, 1950.

She and Frank raised their four children in Carpinteria where they enjoyed their Shetland pony, horses, farm animals and the family swimming pool. She was actively involved in parish life at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Carpinteria.

She enjoyed fundraising for the church at the annual festival. She taught swimming lessons to many of Carpinteria’s youth in the family pool on Myra St. She loved entertaining her friends and hosting parties in her Carpinteria home. Recently, she realized her dream of writing her family memoirs.

She worked in the banking industry prior to her marriage. Like her mother

She wrote articles for the Carpinteria Herald. She later moved to Rancho Mirage, Calif. and worked for the City Fire Chief, worked for the local Palm Springs newspaper writing articles and interviewed movie stars and celebrities, as well as volunteering at the Mizell Senior Center in Palm Springs.

Esther is survived by her four children, Joe, John (Robert), Bonnie and Caroline; former daughter-in-law Val Knapp; grandchildren, Carrie Ann Morgridge, Bethany and Moriah Robinson; her sister Jan Kennedy and niece Colleen Kennedy, as well as several other great nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved Ragdoll cat, King George. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Irene Neukom, her sister Barbara Neukom and former spouse Frank Chufar.

Mom always had a beautiful smile on her face, and we know she is now smiling down on all of us. A Memorial Mass will be held Monday, Jan. 15, 2018, at noon at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1532 Linden Ave., Carpinteria, Calif. A Celebration of Life reception will follow at the St. Joseph Parish Hall on the same grounds.

That is, until I saw “Dunkirk” a few months ago, and then “Darkest Hour” a few days ago. Now I know a little about Dunkirk. But I’m surprised it took me so long, because this battle was complex, unique and all sorts of a big deal.

In May 1940, the Nazis were on a tear. They had just rushed through Poland, Norway and Belgium, and they were in the process of laying claim to France. Great Britain sent help to France, but somehow—somehow!—those Nazis managed to drive the British Army—the entire British Army!—right up against the sea at Dunkirk. Repeat: the entire British Army!

But “Darkest Hour” isn’t actually a war movie, despite being set around and preoccupied with the Battle of Dunkirk.

This movie is really about the early political career of Winston Churchill, which was was all about the Battle of Dunkirk.

You see, while Germany was doing its thing leading up to 1940, Great Britain was snoozing—they weren’t preparing adequately for the storm headed their way. Whose fault was it? The top answer was Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain (Ronald Pickup). So it was decided he had to go.

Viscount Halifax (Stephen Dillane) was a favorite to replace Chamberlain, but he lacked crucial support in the House of Commons. So it ended up being a bit of a wild card—Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman). And by “wild card” I mean crass, arrogant, stubborn, aggressive, narcissistic, mean, alcoholic, quite possibly insane and most definitely brilliant.

A lot of people didn’t like Churchill.

I wonder why.

At any rate, Churchill is all about fight, fight, fight against the Nazis. Chamberlain, Halifax and company—who still

have considerable power—prefer appeasement. They at least want to have a chat with Germany about terms, especially as Dunkirk turns from bad to worse.

Churchill is stubborn as a mule though, so he will have nothing of it. But people are dying. And everyone else is scared and impatient, and Churchill finds himself in the vexed position of fighting for the existence of both his country and his political career. As one goes, so goes the other. And the odds are slim.

The appeal of “Darkest Hour” is wrapped up almost entirely in two people, and one plays the other. The first is Gary Oldman, who gives a brilliant performance as Churchill. One decent test for whether an actor is pulling off playing a well-known historical figure is whether he kind of fades into the background so that you notice him, not as the actor that he is, but as the historical figure that he is portraying. For a little over two hours, Oldman isn’t Oldman— he’s Churchill. Now, I never met old Winston, so I can’t say for sure what he was like, but regardless, what Oldman gives us is a real person. He crafts a complete, cohesive character through painstakingly consistent and subtle mannerisms, affectations, expressions and delivery.

The second person who drives “Darkest Hour” is Churchill himself, aside from whomever played him. What a character!

And what a time for such a character. It’s hard to fathom that civilization as we know it sat on a razor’s edge, teetering with seemingly decisive gravitational force toward an unthinkable abyss. And it’s hard to believe that one cranky old boor was able, through sheer force of will, to heave the thing back up.

But there you have it. “Darkest Hour” is not a perfect movie by any means. But it is undeniably interesting, and a welcome reminder that a lot of what we take for granted is in fact pretty fragile, and sometimes takes a bold and unexpected force to keep it together.

“Darkest Hour” is rated PG-13 for some thematic material.

On Dec. 29 at approximately 3:10 a.m. a man driving northbound on Linden Avenue was pulled over by a deputy for not having a rear license plate light.

The man told the deputy that he did not have any ID with him and said that he was never issued a driver’s license.

Dispatch informed the deputy that the registered owner of the vehicle had a no-bail felony warrant for his arrest, and that his license was suspended. When the deputy asked the man if he was the registered owner of the vehicle, the man said that he was and the deputy told him to exit his vehicle. The deputy’s partner put the man in handcuffs, and placed him in the back of a patrol car. Although the vehicle had a current registration sticker on the license plate, the registration had actually expired last July. In the man’s car, a deputy found a folded $1 bill that contained a white, powdery substance that later tested positive for cocaine. The man was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

On Dec. 29 at approximately 7:40 p.m. a deputy responded to a call from a residence on Pacific Village Drive about vandalism to a vehicle. The previous day, a 75-year-old man was in his driveway when he noticed scratch marks on the rear passenger- and driver’s-side of his car. The man spoke with his neighbor, a 55-year-old woman, about the incident and the woman said that she thought her 23-year-old daughter had committed the vandalism because she had seen her daughter standing by the man’s vehicle laughing the previous night. The woman said that she would pay for the damages (estimated to be $2,500). The man who called the deputies was adamant that he did not want to press charges, and that he only wanted a police report for documentation purposes.

On Dec. 31 at approximately 1 a.m. deputies were dispatched to a golf range on Carpinteria Avenue for an alarm that was sounding. A deputy arrived within one minute and saw a 54-year-old man walking in the parking lot. The man told the deputy that the Ventura Police had

dropped him off in the area of Rincon Point and told the man to “walk that way,” indicating the direction of Carpinteria/Santa Barbara. One of the deputies walked the perimeter of the golf range office and noted in his report that “one of the front windows had been taken off the frame and was placed on the ground.”

He then put the man in handcuffs and he “made the spontaneous statement” that he had heard a beeping sound as he walked by the building. The reporting deputy noted, “Because the audible alarm sounded, (the suspect) was found in the area, the quick response time by Sergeant (name withheld) and the window taken off the frame, I placed (the suspect) under arrest for attempted burglary.” The man would not allow the deputy to read him his Miranda rights, the deputy stated, and also refused to talk with the deputy further. The man was taken to Santa Barbara County Jail.

A repeat performance

On Jan. 2 at approximately 1:30 a.m. deputies were dispatched to investigate a possible trespassing at a residence on Jacaranda Way. Deputies searched the back and side areas of the residence but did not see anyone in the area. A trashcan had been knocked over, and the windshield wiper on a vehicle parked in the driveway was bent outwards. Once the deputies confirmed that no one was on the property, two women in the residence came out to speak with them. One of the women said she’d heard a loud noise in the back area of her condominium and believed that it was a man she knew, whose name the woman gave to the reporting deputy. The woman said she believed it was that man because he had previously vandalized her mother’s car at the residence, and this would be the third time he’d done that. The woman whose car was vandalized said that the wipers would cost $130 to replace, and that she knew the cost because she’d had to replace them previously. A deputy provided the women with a business card and a case number, and advised them to call dispatch with any additional information or if the man came to their residence again.

Storm leaves a mess in Carpinteria, carves deadly path through Montecito

Driving rain drenched the South Coast early Tuesday morning, slamming hillsides charred by the Thomas Fire and sending torrents of water and bulky debris into low lying communities.

Predicted for days, the severe winter storm arrived in its highest intensity in Carpinteria Valley around 3:30 on the morning of Tuesday, Jan. 9. In the 20 minutes between 3:51 and 4:11 a.m. , an inch of rain was recorded at the Carpinteria Fire Station on Walnut Avenue—nearly half of the 2.41 inches recorded over the two-day storm.

The downpour caused numerous local creeks to jump their banks before daylight, carrying along trees and boulders in the raging waters. As anticipated by authorities, the channelized creeks— Santa Monica and Franklin—fared well in the flooding. Carpinteria Creek and Arroyo Paredon—a seasonal stream that runs between Nidever Road and Cravens Lane—both erupted from their banks at numerous road crossings.

Though roads were closed and properties damaged, no major injuries have been reported in Carpinteria as of press time.

In Montecito, however, the death toll has climbed to 15 and expected to increase as bodies are located in the mud and debris.

Though Montecito suffered worst in the storm, Fire Chief Ray Navarro of the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District said that future winter weather could cause massive problems in Carpinteria Valley. “We can’t let our guard down now,” he said.

The Thomas Fire in early December burned hillsides throughout Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, leaving a landscape littered with loose rocks and burned vegetation. As feared, the heavy rain pushed much of the debris downstream and into coastal communities. Navarro said that subsequent storms could be even more damaging for Carpinteria due to a now-saturated layer of soil that could slide under more rainfall.

In advance of this week’s storm, county officials issued a mandatory evacuation order for residences north of Highway 192 in Carpinteria and Montecito; the rest of Carpinteria was asked to evacuate voluntarily. Emergency alerts poured in overnight, and residents in po-

tential flood areas were asked to relocate to higher ground.

Flooding and debris flow closed Highway 101 in and out of Carpinteria on Tuesday morning, and closures are expected to continue for days as mud and floodwaters continue to make cleanup a challenge for Caltrans.

Via Real is closed where Arroyo Paredon overflowed and left a collection of debris. Upstream, Foothill Road also is closed where debris plugged the creek bridge and rerouted its waters over the road. Carpinteria Creek overflowed at Lillingston Canyon, closing the road temporarily.

Local schools, which had just resumed classes on Jan. 8 after a winter break extended by the Thomas Fire, closed due to storm concerns on Jan. 9 and could remain closed through Monday, Jan. 15.

Cox Communications services went down in the storm and are still down as of press time. The County of Santa Barbara has an information line available for storm updates, evacuation information and transportation assistance. Residents can call 681-5542 or text 699-0165.

the Lions Club of Carpinteria refused to let the thomas Fire put an end to a good party. the club kicked off 2018 with a New Year’s bash originally scheduled as a Christmas bash. the playa del Sur 4-h Club of Carpinteria spent the past few months focused on those in need. in october members donated women’s clothing to a group that sent them to women in mexico. November had members collecting, sorting and donating nearly 200 stuffed animals to different organizations that serve children. the majority of the stuffed animals, being used for Christmas gifts, went to CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Santa barbara County and the transition house in Santa barbara. during the thomas Fire, some of the club’s members helped out at the Santa barbara Racquet and polo Field when it served as an evacuation site for large animals. they cleaned and bedded pens for livestock and helped load horses being held there. holding to the 4-h pledge, “… i pledge my hands to larger service…. for my club, my community, my county, and my world,” playa del Sur plans to continue helping and serving others in 2018.

Bishop out-hoops Carpinteria girls after weeks off the court

Following a five-week hiatus due to the Thomas Fire, the Carpinteria High School girls basketball team traveled up the coast on Jan. 3 to take on rival Bishop Diego in Santa Barbara. Although the Warriors fought hard for four quarters, the Cardinals’ offensive weapons proved too tough to overcome in the 35-24 CHS loss. Kayana Diaz led the scoring for the Warriors with nine points on the evening.

Carpinteria got off to a slow start in the game. The girls had difficulty finding shots and scored only two points in the first quarter on a Mikayla Blair drive to the hoop. In the meantime, Bishop Diego’s Natalie Whiting was finding her touch, scoring five points to give the Cardinals a 7-2 lead by the end of the opening stanza. Whiting would lead all scorers in the game with 11.

The second quarter was a different story, with the Warriors beginning to

get to the rim, particularly, the duo of Mikayla Blair and Ruthie Vazquez. “I told our girls, our game plan was to attack the basket,” said Carpinteria coach Amy Gil, who knew that outside shots would be harder for the rusty players.

Even though her team fell behind 16-6, some solid defense and a couple of layins by Diaz and Mariana Campuzano pulled the Warriors within six to make it 16-10 at halftime.

The third quarter played out much like the first, with the visitors once again scoring just two points in the period. A bucket by Vazquez helped keep pace with Bishop, but Whiting tallied four in the quarter to help give the Cardinals a 22-12 lead by the end of the third. Carpinteria would hurt is own cause by missing more than half of the 25 free throws they attempted on the night. “It worked (the game plan) in terms of getting a couple of their really good players (Whiting and Ariana Rivera) off the floor due to foul-

ing trouble, but if we can’t make our free throws, it really doesn’t work,” said Gil. Rivera did some damage before fouling out, scoring nine in the win, and the Cardinals began to find their shooting range in the fourth quarter when Ariana Morones scored five of her seven points for the game and Andrea Perez knocked down four of her six-point game total.

The Warriors outscored the home team 13-12 in that final frame with Amanda Blair (Mikayla’s twin sister) chipping in

three of her five points on the night, and Diaz registering seven. “For not practicing in a month, I would say we did OK,” said Gil. Ruthie Vazquez ended with four points, and Mikayla tossed in three. With the loss, Carpinteria dropped to 1-5 on the year, while the Cardinals improved to 3-2. Already in the midst of Tri-Valley League play due to the fire, Carpinteria hosts Foothill Tech Jan.11 with the tip-off at 7 p.m. at Warrior Gym.

January 5 – The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team outmatched Fillmore, 24-3, in their delayed season opener. The Warrior scoring was led by first-year senior Kelsee Taff with six goals. Sophomore standout Sadie Mead tallied five goals and seven assists, while junior Amy Perez recorded four goals. Freshmen Cassidy Hajducko, Amneryz Ramirez and Mia Cox rounded out the scoring with five, two and one goal, respectively. Freshman goalie Kate Gay, who made nine saves and four steals, held Fillmore scoreless until the end of the first half.

January 5 – The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team lost to Grace Brethren in a non-league game, 4-0. “I was really impressed with Josie Gordon and Emmelly Santillan, they did a great job in their outside defender positions and were looking to push forward quite a bit,” said Warrior coach Charles Bryant of his two standouts.

Carpinteria is now 1-4 overall and still 0-0 in the Frontier League. “We did not play our best, and we did not play our worst; but best of all, we hopefully just kicked off a little of the rust before League starts next week,” said Bryant.

January 5 – The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team notched a 3-0 win versus the Tri-Valley League defending champ Fillmore in the first League game of the season.

The Warriors, got on the board 16 minutes after the initial whistle when Eddie Mendoza fed Diego Perez on the left flank for an early 1-0 lead. In the 34th minute, Saul Hernandez made a run, followed by a cross to the far post, where Gabe Barajas put the ball in the back of the net to make it 2-0 going into the break. Luis Garcia finished the scoring in the 37th minute of the second half when he converted an “Olimpico” off a corner kick. “Alberto Arroyo filled in at the keeper position for the first time in his high school career and finished with three saves and a clean sheet,” said Warriors coach Leo Quintero. Carpinteria’s overall record is 2-1-2 and League record is 1-0-0.

A legacy of storytelling

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY I recently had the pleasure of sitting with fellow Carpinterian Steve Larios to learn more about his family, which is deeply rooted in California’s great, colorful history of ranchos and Dons, and about his passion for a legacy left to him.

“My great-grandfather, Don Manuel Larios, received a land grant near Hollister, California in 1839, and was married two or three times and had more than 16 children by the time the California Ranchos were split up. After that, half of his children went to Mexico and the rest went up to Oregon. His youngest son, my grandfather, was Estolano Larios, and he went to school at the Santa Barbara Mission from 1869 to 1874. The last years of Estolano’s life were spent with Ralph Milliken at Hollister recapturing the stories of his life and early California, and from those stories Milliken’s historical fiction “California Dons” was written and published. Steve’s father, Paul, was Estolano’s fourth son.

Growing up in Oregon, Paul listened to his father’s stories—like when Estolano was an official translator on Pershing’s expedition to pursue Pancho Villa—and when he became a father he continued to pass down the stories to his sons.

“My dad always told us stories. It just seems to be part of our family history, to tell stories. He knew more about the family than anybody. He was the last of what they called the California Dons. A legislator sent him a letter just before he died, recognizing him as the last of the Dons

Steve Larios spends time with his story-telling father, Paul, in 1998. because he was the son of the last straightline Larioses. But unbeknownst to me and my brother, he started writing down these stories. He wrote about his days growing up in Oregon City and days of his youth and buying and riding a motorcycle, and from there went all through his life. He spent a lot of time writing about his time in the Marines in the early 40’s when he was stationed in Guam and Peking and in the motor pool. I have a picture of him standing on the Great Wall. Interspersed in this he talked about the family and his father and grandfather and how they came from Spain and went to Mexico and then into California.

“My dad died in 2004 when he was 92 years old. After he passed away we found all these boxes of papers and photos. I have everything he wrote, along with about 15 pages of Estolano’s handwritten stuff in pencil. It’s in English, and you can barely read it, but his English is so cultured and precise and his writing is so elegant, and it’s about things I’ve never seen in print before. A lot of interesting things about early California history.

“So now I want to do something with it all because it’s a legacy of my dad, and he was such an interesting man. He did so many things, and he was really smart, really sharp, and he only went to school through the 10th grade. But he was like a genius when it came to mechanics and

automobiles. He did a lot of things that really helped the community in Plumas County, like putting in a ski tow and forming the Jeep Posse. He once discovered a cave when he was spelunking in Plumas County looking for crys- Paul and Estolano Larios, the father and tals.
