Diane and I moved to Carpinteria 20 years ago. When we moved in, we were in the garage assembling some shelves, and as neighbors drove by, almost every one of them slowed and waved to us. Each person walking a dog stopped to say, “Hi.” I suppose that’s not very surprising, but it was something new for us. We really were in a small town!

As we move into the New Year, it occurs to me that the learnings and surprises we have had in our time here might provide some ideas for how we can all embrace the idea of “New Year, New You.” So, here is a list of “20 for 2020”:

Recognize the uniqueness of our small beach town

1) When we first moved here, I noticed long-time Carpinterians often gave local phone numbers as just four digits. I finally figured out that everyone in town had the same 684 prefix, so this shorthand was “obvious.”

2) I was at an event at a home near the train tracks when a noisy train went by.

Long-time Carpinterians demonstrated their small-town neighborliness when they stopped what they were doing and waved at the passengers on the train.

Now I make a point to wave when a passenger train goes by, and I love seeing the surprised and smiling faces in the train windows, and occasionally getting a friendly wave back.

3) I quickly learned that in Carpinteria, everyone is a neighbor. You shouldn’t be surprised if you find yourself in line at the grocery store in front of a city council member, or behind the local priest. A while back, I ran into a planning commissioner and our city manager at different places on the Franklin Trail on the same day.

4) Grab an adult beverage at one of our local establishments, and ponder the fact there are more microbreweries in town than there are intersections with traffic lights.

5) Consider what else makes Carpinteria special to you.

Get outside and take advantage of our local treasures

6) At low tide, explore the vast array of life in the tide pools—in addition to the plentiful anemones and mussels, it is a special treat to find a Spanish shawl nudibranch or a small octopus.

7) Take a walk on the beach, and remember if you see dolphins swimming offshore, your “responsibility” is to point to them to help others see them too.

8) Enjoy a winter sunset from the beach.

9) Visit the harbor seal rookery, especially this coming spring when there is sure to be a bounty of wildflowers on the bluffs, many harbor seals on the beach, and at least a few newborn pups.

10) Explore the publicly owned Carpinteria Bluffs.

11) Walk the path at the Salt Marsh Park reading the excellent interpretive signs along the way.

12) From the bridge over Franklin Creek at the salt marsh, look for rays or other fish swimming by, often with a great egret or blue heron standing quietly nearby.

13) Hike the Franklin Trail.

14) On the Franklin Trail look for evidence of wildlife—maybe you will be lucky enough to see a fresh bear pawprint!

Demonstrate ownership of the community

15) Look in Coastal View News for volunteer opportunities at the Salt Marsh Park, Santa Monica Creek or elsewhere.

16) When you go to the grocery store, take a reusable bag and enjoy the enormous reduction in plastic bag garbage blowing around.

17) Don’t smoke in a public place like a park or a sidewalk when other people are around. (It’s the law!)

18) Reflect on the fact that Carpinteria’s small beach town charm is not an accident, but the result of active involvement of a multitude of community members over many decades. Our town’s future is now our responsibility.

19) Keep track of happenings in Carpinteria city government, e.g. through social media, the city’s website, or the “City Hall News” published periodically in CVN. 20) Then most importantly, speak up!

Let the city know your views on issues being considered.

It’s now 2020, so let’s get started on this list!

Local launches new women’s product Sixth generation Carpinterian, Christine Brown, has launched Kind Cup, a patent-pending newly designed menstrual cup. Kind Cup uses locally sourced, dye- and toxin-free, high quality materials that keep costs down while reducing waste and was created by Brown with the help of a small group of Carpinteria women including Alison

With help from WEV, Christine Brown has brought a new kind of menstrual cup to the women’s reproductive health market.

Van Der Kar, Emily Morrill, Helena Littman and Rachel Pallmeyer. Brown was able to bring her product to market, in part, through a $25,000 loan from Women’s Economic Ventures.

“From the start, the three reasons that compelled me to do this: design functionality; increasing awareness; improving access,” said Brown. “Nights when I was working until 3 a.m. and had eight hours of teaching the next day, what kept me going was realizing that this was a product that could truly make a sustainable impact and difference in someone’s life.”

Impeachment proceedings not so simple

Carolyn Edwards’ statement (CVN Letters, Vol. 26 No. 14) that the current impeachment proceeding is the first in our history that does not have bi-partisan support is misleading. The Clinton impeachment consisted of two charges: Perjury and Obstruction of Justice. Of the 228 Republicans in the House, 12 sided with Democrats on the Perjury charge and 5 on the Obstruction charge. Not exactly bi-partisan support. Even so, there were two huge differences.

Clinton was accused of having an affair with a White House intern, while Trump is accused of misappropriating congressionally approved funds to enhance his election chances. I’ll let everyone decide for themselves the comparative seriousness of these two accusations.

The other significant difference is that Clinton was not vindictive or blatantly corrupt, while Trump has demonstrated his wrath and will do anything to destroy those he finds disloyal; at the same time, Trump hands out favors and money to his “loyalists” who will also become his jurors.

Was that what our forefathers intended?

As for Ms. Edwards’ other comments, they are standard scripted talking points from the White House. And while, yes, in the short term, the markets may be up and there has been some solid growth in certain sectors, there are far more serious, long-term concerns that we all need to think about: affordable healthcare and education, our environment and our global partnerships. These foundations of our well-being are being threatened by a dysfunctional Administration and Republican Party.

Endorsements for Das stack up

I’m not surprised by the news that the Santa Barbara Women’s Political Committee, like the Sierra Club, County Firefighters, and the Deputy Sheriff’s Association, has just endorsed Das Williams

for re-election to the County Board of Supervisors. Having known Das Williams since his tenure in the State Legislature, I was motivated by his request for candidates to apply for a First District Arts Commission position. In his usual conscientious fashion, he and stellar Chief of Staff Darcel Elliott interviewed me and granted me this honor. Working closely with arts commissioners throughout the county, we are able to see how powerfully joint projects can impact county citizens.

Das cares deeply about the day-to-day lives of his First District constituents, as witnessed constantly through joyful times, and occasionally tragic ones. His record of environmental stewardship throughout California is second to none, and he is mindful of being fiscally responsible while looking out for the most vulnerable citizens. He collaborates well with his supervisor colleagues, tackling difficult issues with care and creativity.

In short, Das is precisely the right person for our county, and for the First District. I was glad to see that the Women’s Political Committee recognizes this as well.

As the year 2019 ends, things look pretty good in America. Our economy is roaring, the stock market set records, the job market has exploded and unemployment is at an all-time low (also for African Americans and Hispanics). Also, our military is strong again, over 170 federal judges have been approved, there are historic cuts in taxes and regulations, the Space Force has been established, ISIS and its leader have been destroyed, prescription drug prices are going down and America is the top energy producer in the world.

Finally, new pro-American trade deals have been made. (USMCA, Japan, South Korea and first phase negotiations with China.) Thank you for putting America first, President Trump. Let’s hope things continue in a positive way in 2020.

Meet Elsa Granados

Jean Agnes Lizano 3/24/1924 – 12/16/2019

Jean Lizano passed away peacefully on Dec. 16 at the age of 95 after a brief illness surrounded by family and friends. Jean (née Zubris) was born in Brooklyn, New York on March 24, 1924. As a young girl, she attended a fair with friends where a palm reader predicted that she would marry a man from overseas. Jean laughed it off until a few years later when she met and fell in love with Alfredo Lizano from Costa Rica. They married, settled in Queens, New York and had a daughter, Alicia. Their home was always filled with warmth and laughter. Jean worked in business and health insurance, spending 17 years at Blue Cross. In 1992, Alfredo and Jean moved to Carpinteria, California to be closer to their daughter. After Alfredo passed away in 1998, Jean filled her life with travel, theater and enjoying time with friends. In addition to her husband Alfredo, she is predeceased by her son-in-law, Joel Sorkin. She is survived by her daughter, Alicia (Sorkin), and many nieces and nephews who have fond memories of her. Above all, Jean will be remembered for her loving devotion to her family as well as her kindness and concern for others. This was her mission in this world. Special thanks to all the medical staff at Cottage Hospital, Valle Verde and Mission Terrace who cared for her over the past months.

A celebration of life is planned for Saturday, Jan. 18, 2020, at 5750 Via Real in Carpinteria at 1 p.m.

James Leeds Ashmore 7/3/1951 - 12/1/2019

James Leeds Ashmore of Victorville, California, died Sunday, Dec. 1, after a long illness.

James was born July 3, 1951, in Pennsylvania. He was a graduate of Mitchell Prep, moved to Hawaii, and lived most of his life in California.

He was an independent thinker and free spirit who loved landscape design, animals, writing and helping people see life through a new lens. There are many who will miss him dearly.

James loved Santa Claus Beach and had a passion for keeping it clean, while helping to maintain the area. In his honor people are encouraged to do what they can to help continue to keep it a beautiful place.

James is survived by his two daughters, Danoucha Reynon and Emmaly Read, a brother Ed Ashmore, and two sisters, Barbara Allen and Lee Glover, eight nieces and nephews, many cousins and family members, and his best friend Mike Rupert.

A private service was held in Carpinteria.

10:47 p.m. / Possession / Carpinteria Avenue

A man was contacted in a parked vehicle. A records check revealed the man’s probation status, and a vehicle search revealed methamphetamine and a meth pipe. The man was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

A man was driving his vehicle southbound on Elm Avenue, and called to report that a male was riding his bicycle eastbound on 9th Street and did not stop at the stop sign. The caller stated that the man rode his bicycle into the intersection right in front of his vehicle and he hit the bicyclist and knocked him off his bicycle.

The cyclist was transported to the hospital by paramedics for his injuries.

11:20 p.m. / Possession / Bailard Avenue

A man was contacted in the Bluffs parking lot after hours. During a consent search of the vehicle, the man was found to be in possession of a usable amount of methamphetamine and a used methamphetamine pipe. He was cited and released.

12:25 a.m. / Warrant Arrest / Highway 101 at Casitas Pass Road

A traffic stop was initiated due to the vehicle displaying false registration tabs.

The man driving had recently purchased the vehicle, and denied knowledge of the false tab. He was cited for the registration violation. The passenger in the truck was identified as having had an outstanding warrant for his arrest and he was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

11:48 a.m. / Resisting Arrest / Carpinteria Avenue

A woman was contacted after being evicted and refusing to leave the premises of a motel. During the contact, the woman refused to cooperate with the deputy’s investigation and pulled away while being placed in handcuffs. She was arrested for the above violations and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

1:29 p.m. / Warrant Arrest / 4600 block Carpinteria Avenue

After being pulled over for a broken taillight on his vehicle, a man provided deputies with a false name to conceal multiple warrants for his arrest. He was arrested and booked at Santa Barbara County Jail for his warrants. The man’s vehicle was towed from the scene.

For the second time in one week, a man was stopped for having false tags on his vehicle. He was cited a second time for the misdemeanor violation and released.

Carpinteria Avenue. The vehicle that was struck then hit a parked car.

2:14 p.m. / Hit and Run / Concha Loma Drive and Arbol Verde Street

A man came out to find that some time overnight an unknown person had crashed into his parked car and did not leave any contact information.

2:43 p.m. / Public Consumption of Alcohol / 9th St and Yucca Lane

A man was seen drinking alcohol as a deputy drove past him. He was cited and the alcohol was poured out.

Friday, Dec. 20

8:19 p.m. / DUI (Felony) and Possession of Nunchuks / Highway 101 at Highway 150

A records check was conducted on a vehicle at a convenience store, and the registered owner was found to have a suspended CDL. After the vehicle left and entered Highway 101 south, a traffic stop was initiated. Based on the odor of alcohol, Field Sobriety Tests were conducted and the female drivier was arrested for DUI after blowing .23/.23 BAC. A search of the vehicle revealed three pairs of nunchuks and a “butterfly” knife. A criminal history check showed the woman has three prior DUIs in the last five years, making this DUI a felony.

Monday, Dec. 23

8:52 a.m. / Tow Away / Bailard Avenue

A vehicle was parked at the South end of Bailard for approximately a week. The vehicle was unregistered and displaying false registration. The vehicle was towed.

12:06 p.m. / Fraud

A caller stated that she had multiple transactions on her bank account that she did not make. She does not have any suspect information, but believes the suspect took mail from her mailbox and that is how they gained access to her account.

3:57 p.m. / Public Intoxication / El Carro at La Paloma

A caller reported that her son was possibly under the influence of marijuana and had become verbally aggressive with her. Upon arrival, the subject was contacted in a public area and was found to be intoxicated to the point that he was unable to care for his safety or the safety of others. He was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

11:26 p.m. / False Vehicle Registration / Carpinteria Avenue

Deputies were dispatched to a train versus pedestrian at the above location.

Upon arrival, they found the victim being treated by a physician who was on board the train. The victim had no visible signs of injury and had a slight rip on her sweater. The train conductor saw the victim standing on the tracks approximately 100 yards from the crossing.

He began hitting the train’s airhorn and applied his brakes. It is believed the train did not come in contact with the victim but somehow “pushed her down” onto the rocks. The victim was able to walk to the ambulance and was transported for a medical check-up.

1:40 a.m. / Possession / Highway 101 at Bailard Avenue

A woman was stopped for displaying false registration tabs. A records check showed she had a warrant for her arrest, and she admitted to being in possession of meth and used meth pipes. She was issued a citation and released so she could seek medical care.

Saturday, Dec. 28

10:15 p.m. / Minors in Possession of Alcohol / Cravens Lane and Via Real

Four subjects were observed in a parked vehicle on Cravens Lane north of Via Real. Upon contact, the subjects attempted to hide several open containers of beer. All four minors were cited.

Saturday, Dec. 21

11:08 p.m. / Assault / 700 block Linden Avenue

A fight occurred inside a bar between two large groups of people. During the fight, a glass bottle was thrown. The bottle struck a female on her head. The female sustained a small laceration on her hairline. She was treated on scene and refused to be transported to the hospital. Multiple people were interviewed and “in fields” were conducted. All parties were intoxicated and many of the statements were conflicting. There was no surveillance video recording of the fight. A report will be forwarded to the DA for review.

2:43 a.m. / Public Intoxication / Palmetto Way

A 911 caller reported that an intoxicated subject was knocking on the front door and then the backdoor and yelling out for “Monica.” A man was contacted and it was discovered he actually lives on Bailard, but believed he was at his own residence that he shares with his girlfriend. The man was arrested for public intoxication of alcohol and booked into Santa Barbara County jail.

Sunday, Dec. 22

12:22 a.m. / Possession / 1100 block Casitas Pass Road

A woman was parked on Casitas Pass Road in the red zone in front of a breakfast restaurant. During a contact with a deputy she consented to a search of her vehicle, and a used meth pipe with a usable amount of meth was found in her purse. Suspect was cited and released.

Providing shelter: Robert Ernst and the Freedom Warming Center

This holiday season, as we reflect on events and actions from this past year and we make resolutions for the new one, CVN will be spotlighting individuals in the Carpinteria Valley community who have shown extraordinary generosity of spirit and service in 2019.

Originally from Youngston, Ohio, software engineer Robert Ernst and his wife Nadia have lived in Carpinteria since 1996. The Ernsts have two sons, Samuel, 22, and Adam, 19, and attend Carpinteria Community Church (CCC) where Robert serves on CCC’s Freedom Warming Center (FWC) outreach team.

CCC’s Freedom Warming Center (and several other community organizations) host the Freedom Warming Center outreach program which provides the homeless with a safe and warm place to sleep on cold and rainy nights. In addition to providing a place to escape the weather, CCC’s team provides a warm meal and a snack lunch to guests.

For warming centers to be activated (opened), weather conditions must meet the required threshold: 35 degrees or less or 50 percent or more chance of rain (as predicted at least 48 hours before any given date).

Robert was recommended by CCC Pastor Jarrett Johnson because he is one of several key members of the church’s FWC team, including Alice Chafee (retired team leader), Sandy and Barbara Smith (first to come, last to leave), Mike and Val Carmel (lunch preparation) and Carol Nichols (gourmet cook). In addition, other church members regularly help in the kitchen on activation nights.

What is your role for the Freedom Warming Center?

My primary responsiby is monitoring the FWC hotline and notifying the team when the center will be open. I locate a volunteer cook and serving staff. I also ensure our cupboards are stocked. We keep an inventory of paper plates, forks, knives, etc. As well as salad dressings, snacks, etc.

What motivated you to get involved?

My inspiration for getting involved was Alice Chaffee. I observed how much good she had accomplished and how much happiness she brought to others.

She just radiates love and joy. Alice has chosen to retire and will be relocating soon, closer to her family. Pastor Jar-

rett offered me the opportunity to join the team as the FWC contact person.

Was there a specific event in your life that led you to this specific cause?

Some years back I was looking for a used small microwave. I found an ad for a Sharp ½-pint microwave (something a small child could use) in the Independent.

The owner was staying in one of the lowrent hotels near lower State Street where itinerants live. The room was quite tiny, perhaps 10 ft x 10 ft and all his possessions were there, including a tiny microwave he used to cook his meals. I asked him why he was selling it. He said that he needed the money to buy food. It struck me that if I bought the microwave, he couldn’t buy anything that required heating. I felt bad and tried to give him some cash and leave, but he insisted I take the microwave.

His dignity prevented him from accepting charity. It made me realize that a lot of the people that are in this situation are decent people who have just fallen on hard times (in his case it was a medical condition). I think of that man when I see someone who is out on the street. I know that some of the people that spend the night with us are there due to physical problems, and they have no family to support them. So, they wind up on the street.

What’s special about this organization?

What’s special about CCC’s outreach program is that everyone who participates does so out of love. They enjoy what they’re doing. It gives us some comfort to know that at least for one or two evenings our guests will have a hot meal and a safe and dry place to sleep.

I don’t think of what I’m doing as giving back to the community so much as becoming part of it. I think of a community as an extended family. When I was growing up it wasn’t unusual for my mother’s siblings to help each other out with a task, canning vegetables, cleaning my grandmother’s house, etc. Kids helped too, that was just what we did as a family. I looked forward to it because I knew I’d be spending time with my cousins, and there’d probably be some form of family dinner afterward. That’s probably how people once thought of barn-raisings. Once people were done, they’d have a community picnic. In the

Digitized copies of long-forgotten weekly new

By Tom JaCoBS Cleaning out a basement, attic or garage is tedious work. But the drudgery of the task is leavened by the hope that you might just find a piece of treasure— a long-forgotten object that evokes the distant past.

That’s what happened to Carpinteria native Joe Escareno, Jr. in April 2018. He and his sister were cleaning out the house of their aunt, Jessie Dominguez, when they came across a

bound stack of old newspapers. Resisting an initial impulse to toss them in the trash, he called his childhood friend Jim Campos, a retired school administrator who has contributed to several volumes of Carpinteria history.

Campos was unenthusiastic at first, assuming they were copies of the wellknown weekly newspaper the Carpinteria Herald. “But when he started describing them, I realized this was something different,” Campos

recalled.

Indeed it was. Escareno had discovered copies of the long-forgotten one-time competitor to the Herald, the Carpinteria Chronicle. Until he held the copies in his hand, Campos had no idea it even existed.

The more he read, the more he realized that the 141 issues, published in 1933, 1934 and 1938, were a font of information regarding the community’s

Depression-era attitudes and controversies.

With the goal of both preserving them and providing the widest possible access to their content, he and Escareno decided to donate them to the University of California, Santa Barbara Library’s Department of Special Research Collections.

Digital copies of each issue are now available online through the library’s Alexandria Digital Research Library, at alexandria.ucsb. edu/collections. Scholars and curious Carpinterians can look through them free of charge.

“They were very frail when they arrived,” said archival processing specialist Zachary Liebhaber. “That’s one reason we wanted them digitized—they’re too frail to be handled.”

The project “really was a team effort here at the library,” he added. “The newspapers were bound with string; we had to disbind them before they could be digitized. We worked with staff in Acquisitions and Resource Management with that, and then with staff in Content

Thanks to their work, users can search the collection for specific topics. One that Campos found particularly compelling— and largely ignored by the rival Herald—is coverage of the creation of Aliso School in the 1930s.

“Aliso School was originally built in the 1890s on Walnut Street—right in the middle of town,” Campos said. “It needed to be torn down, but rather than rebuild it there, they looked for a place to put it on the Mexican side of town, so they could have de facto segregation without breaking the law.”

This is made crystal clear in the headline on the March 29, 1934 issue: “School Board Election Held Tomorrow PM. Segregation Looms as an Issue.” As the story explains, three candidates were vying for two seats on the school board, and two of them “have committed themselves to the principle of segregation in local schools, and have endorsed the Aliso bond issue.” The third, a man named John Young, “is opposed to segregation beyond the fourth grade.”

The results, as tabulated in the April 5, 1934 edition: Young got only 34 votes, compared to 227 and 219 for his opponents. The bond measure passed overwhelmingly.

The early issues of the Chronicle expressed progressive political views;

one editorial approvingly quotes Will Rogers on how wealthy people like “John D.” (that would be Rockefeller) game the system. But within the first year, it was bought out by a different owner, Ann Waynflete, who took a conservative stance decidedly unfriendly to President Franklin Roosevelt’s policies.

One of her editorials reveals the cost of health care was as big an issue then as it is today. “The little fellow gets free medical attention,” it proclaims, not specifying where or how. “The man in the middle has to pay—$10 for an x-ray, $100 for an operation.”

tainment for today, too, in the form of advertising that appeared in its pages.

A 1939 ad for Leibler’s Hi-Way Liquor Shop, “Carpinteria’s exclusive liquor shop for fine imported and domestic wines,” featured “fine wines in bulk,” including sherry and port for 93 cents per gallon, and burgundy, zinfandel and claret for 58 cents per gallon. The costs were apparently BYOJ—bring your own jug.

There are lots of smile-inducing headlines, such as “Legion Auxiliary Plans Poppy Sale,” “Ticket Money for Carnival Should be Turned in Now” and “Local Girl Wins Essay Contest.” But it also includes stories on crime, poverty (such

as an announcement of a new WPA roadbuilding project) and, as noted earlier, racial tensions.

“Some of the problems,” Liebhaber noted, “are no different from today.”

Taken in by drag queens, Harley settles into her new life and becomes friends with Ivy, a budding activist who organizes protests against the male-centric film club and spends her time after school at the community garden. Ivy introduces wide-eyed Harley to new ideas and exposes to Gotham City’s corruption to her. Their beloved neighborhood is slowly being bought out by the Kane Corporation and the community garden and Harley’s home are subject to gentrification. Harley must decide to either organize with Ivy or join edgy anarchist Joker in taking down Kane Corporation.

Tamaki writes a timely plot and a captivating origin story for Harley Quinn.

Not recommended for Harley Quinn purists, but those who can appreciate a good coming of age story whether or not they have any experience with the Batman franchise.

Volunteers provide warmth as needed

As winter approached, Aja Forner, standing third from left, and Carly Bass, kneeling, saw a need for occasional jackets and clothing for students, and came up with the idea of a “Canalino Closet.” Speaking at Morning Rotary, Forner and Bass shared how they used Facebook to announce the idea, and the great response they received.

Both women work and volunteer at Canalino, and started collecting clothing and worked with staff and families to make it available to students in need. Their vision is to eventually have a closet space available at the school to provide this service year around. To donate, email Forner at aforner@cusd.net or Bass at carly04@me.com.

CHS boys basketball finishes year at Bashore Classic

The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team finished play on Monday, Dec. 23, at the Jim Bashore Holiday Cage Classic at Warriors Gym, dropping the third place game to archrival Bishop Diego, 63-51. Carpinteria ends the season with a 5-6 record overall. The Cardinals avenged an earlier loss at Warriors Gym on Dec. 4, when Jose Suarez’ tip-in at the buzzer in overtime gave Carpinteria a 59-57 win. Atascadero took the championship, winning the last game of the Bashore Classic, edging Santa Maria, 98-97.

The Warriors had mixed results in the tournament, finishing at 2-2. In their first game on Friday, Dec. 20, the home team put on an offensive clinic, scoring an 83-65 victory over Foothill Tech of Ventura. “We practice moving the ball to certain spots, when you shoot the ball in places where you’ve done it before, it’s easier,” said Carpinteria coach Scott Sorich.

It was the third time the teams had met with Carpinteria taking two out of the last three from the Dragons with the win.

“We hadn’t really gone against a team that throws the ball inside, and so they understood what to do—they just hadn’t really gone full speed against guys that do that a lot,” Sorich noted of Foothill Tech’s plan to use their height advantage to win

the first game by 21 points.

“We just felt like this is the game that determines who’s the better team,” said Warriors sophomore Dylan O’Neill.

“We just felt that we needed to be calm out there, play hard, play defense, play how we know how to play.”

In the second round (Dec. 21), the Warriors played Santa Maria in the morning game. Carpinteria once again showed some offensive prowess, scoring 78 points. Unfortunatley, it wasn’t enough as the Saints Justin Gutierrez’s layup at the buzzer gave the visitors an 80-78 win.

“We talked about being on our home court, taking pride in being at home,” said Sorich to his team before the first game of the tournament. “It’s not just the home court advantage, it’s the place where we want to make sure we’re comfortable here, we practice every day here.”

The Warriors also played against Thacher of Ojai. Carpinteria rebounded from the tough loss in the morning to beat the Toads, 69-62. They’ll continue their non-league schedule with a home battle against Grace Brethren of Simi Valley.

Right at the beginning of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” we get a reminder of how dorky, hokey, cheesy and incredibly slow Mr. Rogers (played

by Tom Hanks in this movie) was. Yes, yes, he was also tender, kind, and totally wonderful (more on that below). But, man, was he slow.

And not at all fancy. The show was half Mr. Rogers putting on/taking off clothes while singing some not-totally-appealing song and half him playing with ratty old puppets. No effects, no gimmicks, no production value.

So, why was everyone drawn to him?

Why did kids tune in to his show so religiously for so long (895 episodes!)?

That’s what investigative reporter Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) of Esquire Magazine wants to know in this movie, which is based on a true story. Vogel is not sure he buys Rogers’ whole absurdly wholesome, outrageously good persona.

Unlike Rogers, Vogel isn’t a warm and fuzzy type. Or, as another character put it, Vogel is not exactly a “lover of humanity.”

Vogel has other issues too. He is angry at his dad, Jerry (Chris Cooper), for abandoning their family while his mom was on her death bed. He is worried that he is going to be a bad father too. The only thing he seems to know how to do is work.

So maybe Vogel is an unusual choice to do a piece about the beloved, kindhearted Mr. Rogers.

But Mr. Rogers doesn’t see it that way.

Rogers wants to talk to Vogel. He is enthusiastic about it. The first time he talks to Vogel on the phone, Rogers asks, “Do you know what is the most important thing to me in the whole world right now?” He answers, “To be talking with Lloyd Vogel on the phone.”

Over the course of several meetings, Vogel tries to ask probing, difficult questions. But, more often than not, it is Rogers who ends up digging deeply into Vogel. Rogers wants to know about Vogel’s family, his background, what he likes, what’s bothering him. As a result, Vogel can’t get very far with his intended exposé.

Still, he tries. Vogel asks Rogers if it is a burden to always be dealing with other people’s problems. He asks whether Rogers’ children have found it difficult.

He tries to tease apart Mr. Rogers, the character, from Fred Rogers, the person.

Mr. Rogers doesn’t understand. He just wants to know about Vogel’s childhood stuffed rabbit.

Why? Why does he want to know about that? Why does he care?

Well, that’s just it—that’s the answer: He cares. He cares about Vogel. He cares about the kids that he meets and that tune into his show. He cares about them desperately.

In a 2002 commencement address at Dartmouth, Rogers says, “It’s not the honors and the prizes and the fancy outsides of life which ultimately nourished our souls. It’s the knowing that … the bedrock of our lives from which we make our choices is very good stuff.”

He then adds that what this means is that, “You don’t ever have to do anything sensational for people to love you.”

For Rogers, Vogel is valuable. Just the way he is. That’s it. Not because he’s a good writer. Not because he works at Esquire. Not because he has something interesting or important or sensational to do or say.

“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” is, like Mr. Rogers’ show, cinematically unremarkable. There’s nothing fancy about it. Yes, Tom Hanks and Matthew Rhys do a fine job. And, sure, the movie is well composed in some other ways. But it is not sensational because of its plot, effects, lighting, score, etc.

What makes this movie sensational is Mr. Rogers himself and what he was able to bring to people’s lives aside from all the dorky outfits, worn out puppets and cheesy jingles. Day-in, day-out, for over 30 years, he asked, “Won’t you be my neighbor?” And he really meant it. What could be more sensational than that?

“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” is rated PG for some strong thematic material, a brief fight and some mild language.
