in her fourth year as aliso elementary school principal, Dr. Michelle fox celebrates her school’s recognition by the state department of education as one of five santa Barbara County schools named as 2020 California Distinguished Schools. The award reflects a “strong community of teachers and staff who really know and support students,” Dr. fox said. aliso’s focus on student social/emotional growth has also been key to improved academic performance, the principal noted: “Meeting students’ needs so they can access the curriculum.” the principal emphasized staff efforts to close the achievement gap for English learners and support atrisk students who face socio-economic challenges. she also acknowledged increased parental involvement in recent years as a significant factor in her school’s success. the Distinguished schools program recognizes schools based on performance and progress on state indicators including test scores, suspension rates and conditions and climate. elementary schools and secondary schools are recognized in alternate years and awardees hold the title for two years. to increase communication with parents, Dr. fox initiated two “Coffee with the Principal” events this year.

Other on-campus activities included “Trunk-or-Treat,” organized by the parents for aliso group so that working families could be involved after working hours. Focused reading interventions have been another important factor in the school’s overall academic success.

“Our goal,” Dr. Fox explained, “is for all students to be reading at grade level by the end of third grade.” Students in California public schools transition from learning to read to “reading to learn” in fourth grade, which requires reading proficiency. santa Barbara County superintendent of schools susan Salcido said, “We are proud of the exceptional education programs and practices at these (Distinguished school) sites. this award highlights their outstanding work, and we are thrilled their work resulted in this recognition.” the additional California Distinguished school recipients in santa Barbara County are: College school in the College school District, Kellogg elementary in the Goleta Union school District, franklin elementary School in the Santa Barbara Unified School District and Solvang Elementary School in the Solvang school District.

Just over 50 percent of Aliso School students met state requirements in language testing and 65 percent were at grade level in math testing. On state testing the school is on an “overall upward trajectory,” Dr. Fox said, adding “we’re really happy and proud.”

The secret’s in the water at Jack’s Bistro & Famous Bagels

TRADE SECRETS M E G A N WA L D R E P While some businesses struggle to stay afloat, others hit a home run right off the bat. That’s the story with Jack’s Bistro & Famous Bagels, one of Carpinteria’s most popular gathering spots. Loyal customers make weekly, daily and twice daily visits to the Carpinteria Avenue location, indulging in homemade bagels and an extensive deli menu. But get ready for the story of how they’ve stayed in business— it’s one to really sink your teeth into.

Doralee Jacobson and her husband Henry had no experience with restaurants when they first decided to enter the bagel business. Doralee is a former New York chiropractor, and Henry was a former Madison Avenue advertising executive. Though the Jacobsons lacked experience, their time in New York meant they knew a few things about the city’s well-known bagels.

Along with two business partners who had previous experience in the restaurant industry, the Jacobsons opened the first location of Jack’s Bagels on Milpas Street in 1995. By all accounts, it was a huge success. Lines wrapped around the building and they could hardly keep up with demand. Three years later they cut the ribbon on the Carpinteria Avenue location, and a little over 10 years after, Jack’s Bagels transformed into Jack’s Bistro & Famous Bagels, offering an expanded menu for breakfast and lunch. Today, they also provide an extensive catering service.

With a successful launch right out of the gates, Jacobson admits, “You have to have a product that people want to buy. Somehow, you have to figure out a product that people want.”

When her husband Henry passed away Doralee’s next move was to take full control, buying out one owner and ousting the other for mishandling the books.

Though grieving, scared and a bit intimidated, Doralee kept going. “I think what saved me was I had a friend who was a successful business woman and she recommended a good accounting system,” said Doralee. “I was able to keep track of our inventory, sales, and

(income). And that probably saved us.”

At first, Doralee admits they didn’t have much of an accounting system in place. It took her a while to get the hang of the new system and, although her and her team are still challenged at times, “the new system is able to handle all the different bagels we have, all the different cream cheeses and all the combinations.”

The more complex accounting system, along with a new point-of-sale system for the bistro, allows her to manage the inventory and income in one space.

In addition to having a good business plan and accounting system, Doralee recommends hiring a PR person to promote your product. She admits they didn’t really need a PR person at first because their product was so popular, “it advertised itself.”

Still wondering why the bagels are so good? It’s the water. “We use a water filtration system that emulates New York water, so we always have the same, consistent water in our bagels and in our coffee which makes a huge difference.”

If Doralee had to choose a favorite meal from the bistro menu, it would be the Nantucket Salad. She got the idea for the dish by watching an episode of one of her favorite TV shows, “The Barefoot Contessa.” And, since Jack’s makes their own turkey, Doralee streamlined it into the “crunchy and tasty” meal it is today.

For Doralee, the key to their success is consistency of product. But she is quick to note that offering fresh and healthy cuisine, clean facilities and employee retention is what makes Jack’s Bistro & Famous Bagels prosperous.

“I still have some of my original bakers, which makes me feel good that they are here,” said Doralee, “we are like a family.”

Young robot scientists dominate school board meeting

On Dec. 18, Matt LaBrie, co-owner of the old Austin’s Hardware property in the 700 block of Linden Avenue, presented his team’s vision for the area to the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset. The proposed dog-friendly development would include a combination of retail, restaurants, shared work space, rooftop patio and an open courtyard.

Carpinteria-area elementary students displayed their science chops at the Dec. 17 meeting of the school board, the last of 2019. Principal Dr. Michelle Fox and Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) coordinator Teresa Koontz presented the board with information on Project Lead the Way, a national non-profit devoted to STEM education, before handing over the podium to a host of young science-lovers as they discussed their work in engineering, robotics and coding. Trustees also voted to elect Sally Green the new board president and Jayme Bray the new vice-president/ clerk before adjourning for the year.

Principal Fox of Aliso Elementary and GATE Coordinator Teresa Koontz gave the board a rundown of the Project Lead the Way curriculum, designed to help teach students critical thinking, creativity and collaboration. “We want to make sure that our students have opportunities” to gain skills to prepare for the future, said Fox, as she thanked the board for funding the professional development which made it possible for her and Koontz to implement the advanced science-based curriculum. The elementary science program is funded in partnership with Project Lead the Way, Chevron and the Carpinteria Education Foundation.

Aliso fifth-grader Malakai Castaneda presented a thorough, fact-based presentation on the 2011 Fukushima Daichi nuclear disaster, which continues to curtail nuclear energy production in Japan today. Castaneda discussed the types of robots engaged in the clean-up effort and expressed his relief that the world is moving towards cleaner, less-risky sources of energy like wind, water and solar power.

Other students presented on their use of KWL charts, charts designed to map out what students know, what they want to know, and what they ultimately learn.

Others presented Google Slides projects of their work researching engineering and the design process. Meeting attendants crowded around for a view as the students demonstrated their work, before the young scientists posed for photos with board members and representatives from Chevron and CEF. In further STEM news, Carpinteria Middle School students honored National Computer Science Education Week, which took place Dec. 8-15, by taking part in nationwide Hour of Code activities. Eighth grade students participated in a roller coaster engineering project, making use of their knowledge of Newton’s laws and kinetic and potential energy to construct marble roller coasters, measuring speed and distance traveled. Superintendent Diana Rigby also singled out the afterschool STEM club at Canalino Elementary for introducing young children to such projects as building electrical circuits and mini-robots, developing coding skills and experimenting with exothermic (heatreleasing) chemical reactions.

In the only public comment of the day, local parent Jaime Diamond discussed what she called “the big problem with unpaid lunch debt.” “We’ve all heard these horror stories” of students being singled out or shamed, Diamond said, and expressed relief that such practices are foreign to Carpinteria schools. Nevertheless, Diamond pointed out the unpaid lunch debt from the first three months of the school year amounts to $18,000.

Noting that due to the national political climate, local parents are sometimes afraid of immigration concerns, and reluctant to fill out the free and reduced price lunch forms, Diamond urged the board to “start looking ahead and talking to other districts” about ways to bridge the funding gap, whether through public education or private donation.

The board approved substantial donations from CHS Boosters to the high school Athletics Fund in the amount of $29,000. Trustees also approved the second reading of the Bailard Property Sale. Trustee Rogelio Delgado once again expressed his concern with the construction of new affordable housing at the site, citing traffic and crime concerns. Superintendent Rigby and board member Andy Sheaffer stressed the comprehensive and thorough review process for new development, emphasizing the stages at which opponents to the project can make their voices heard. Assistant Superintendent Maureen Fitzgerald presented the First Interim Report on district finances midway through the school year. “Our expenditures have significantly outpaced our revenues for the past four years,” she warned, noting that the “deficit has gone down, but it has not been eliminated.”

The budget development process for 2020-21 will begin at the second regular meeting of the new year, scheduled for the fourth Tuesday of January.

Laura Capps epitomizes collaboration, community and capability. Collaboration that results in effective action isn’t easy.

I served with Laura on the SB County Women’s Commission for several years and saw firsthand how she respected and harmonized sharply disparate North County and South County perspectives to benefit women and families county-wide.

A true feminist, Laura is committed to fostering female leadership and led the first-ever study of gender representation on boards and commissions. And when our findings were published, not surprisingly showing severe under-representation of women in leadership roles, Laura led the charge to meet with mayors, city councils and women to pave the way for achieving parity.

Community outreach is key to effective representation. When our Women’s Commission held “Women Speak Up” listening events, we heard issues of concern from hundreds of women and girls. The comments about sexual assault, bullying, discrimination and LGBTQ harassment were especially disturbing to me as a filmmaker, educator and mom of a gay son.

When I went before the SBUSD School Board to pitch a sexual education film series for high school health classes, Laura jumped in to support with specific recommendations for next steps. I’ve seen how she stands up for inclusive, progressive sex-ed and implicit bias training despite strong right-wing opposition.

Laura not only shares these values but acts upon them. Five years ago, when PFLAG was planning our first interfaith Pride Celebration during the Pride Festival, Laura volunteered her skills to help us pull it off. This has now become an annual event. More than just vocal support, Laura is always quick to jump in and ask, “How can I help make this happen?” We need Laura to continue her results-driven work so that our county can be even more inclusive, equitable and supportive of women, men and their families.

No fan of the left

The left—I am not talking about moderate Democrats—has been trying to impeach the president since the day he was elected. I am not worried about that. Our forefathers actually anticipated this event, that one party would try to take over. I say this because this is the first impeachment in our history that does not have bipartisan support. I have faith in the system our forefathers created. Checks and balance.

Everything has a check on its power and is balanced by the fact that we have three, co-equal branches of government. If the impeachment process continues in the Senate, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court will preside.

The left vowed to “resist” this president. Which may be why, after a year, the USMCA (U.S., Mexico and Canada) trade agreement has still not come to the floor of the house for a vote. NAFTA, passed under President Clinton, destroyed American manufacturing and one million Americans lost their jobs and American companies were incentivized to leave our country. And we were told by President Obama and the “experts” that those jobs were never coming back. But jobs have come back, and more companies are returning to the U.S. and USMCA will create 100,000 new jobs and open up new markets that have been closed to us. But it sits. Mexico and Canada signed it long ago, they are waiting for us.

Trade deals like the USMCA improve the lives of everyday working people. We currently have an unemployment rate of 3.5 percent. All of these politicians who have been in office for decades could have created a robust economy, but they didn’t.

So, if the president’s policies are working, might the left’s policies be wrong?

Our schools greatly benefit from strong school community partnerships and we are grateful for the community’s commitment to enhance learning opportunities for our youth.

These partnerships have resulted in sharing and maximizing resources to ensure academic and social success for all students. In the post-secondary special education program SEALS, community partnerships contribute to the transition to adulthood in the work world. SEALS— Success in Education of Adult Learning Skills—serves young adults, age 18-22, with multiple disabilities such as autism, intellectual impairments and visual impairments. SEALS special education students meet every day with their special education teacher and instructional assistants in a classroom at the Carpinteria Children’s Project to learn independent living and work-based skills to promote meaningful and successful adult lives.

The special education staff works with the SEALS students to identify preferences, interests, strengths and goals to help them design post-school plans that are individually tailored, invested in, and successfully completed. SEALS students learn typical job skills: working through challenges, getting along with coworkers, communicating effectively, managing time, and staying on task.

Inclusion in community activities and work places provides an authentic context for SEALS students to practice and refine their skills during the four years that they are enrolled in the program.

Continuing his legacy are his great-grandchildren: Christopher, Bella, Jacob, Kaitlin, Makaela, Delilah, Cruz, Chase, Jeremiah, Sofia and Dani Rose. He was looking forward to welcoming his 12th great grandchild in March. He is also survived by his sister, Carmen Mendoza.

A mass and celebration, filled with love and music, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 28. The 11 a.m. mass will be held at Saint Joseph’s church with burial to follow at the Carpinteria Cemetery.

Our Tata was deeply loved and well respected. He will be forever missed by his extended family and many friends. While we are heartbroken to lose his presence here on earth, we find solace in our belief that there was a wonderful celebration as he reunited with his beautiful bride.

We imagine that the guitar is out, and he is once again playing and enjoying the good times with his loved ones who awaited him.

On Dec. 18, our beloved father and Tata passed away peacefully at his home in Carpinteria. He was surrounded by the love and care of his children. “Big Ed” was born in Carpinteria on Oct. 31, 1925, to Lonnie Arellano and Frances Romero Arellano. By the age of 10, his parents were deceased, and he was raised by his Tia Chacha and numerous relatives.

After attending Aliso Elementary School and Carpinteria Junior High, Ed eventually became a proud alumnus of Carpinteria High School. While in high school he lettered in multiple sports including football, track and baseball.

Community Heroes

Meister makes senior food program a lifelong service project

By DeBra HerriCk This holiday season, as we reflect on events and actions from this past year and we make resolutions for the new one, CVN will be spotlighting individuals in the Carpinteria Valley community who have shown extraordinary generosity of spirit and service in 2019.

Twice a month the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County’s free Brown Bag program supplies local low-income seniors in Carpinteria with a bounty of fresh groceries. For 23 years, Craig Meister has volunteered his time to ensure that on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month, seniors can pick up three grocery bags full of produce and protein-rich, shelf-stable foods from the Carpinteria Veterans Hall.

For the Brown Bag program, volunteers arrive around 7 a.m. to the Veterans Hall to sort through groceries and sundries. At 8:30 a.m. the jazzercize class starts and volunteers quickly move their bags outside for distribution. A lot of seniors have trouble picking up at the Veterans Hall, so Brown Bag volunteerdrivers also make home deliveries.

Meister was recommended by Judith Smith-Meyer, marketing communications manager of the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County. She noted that the Foodbank team thought of him because he knew the history of the Brown Bag program (and is part of that history). When we reached out to Meister for the “Community Heroes” series, he first responded by saying, “I certainly don’t consider myself a hero, I am one person doing a small part, as many in our community do.”

When I first started, we had over 80 senior participants and several Rotary members. I have been doing this twice a month for 23 years! The numbers have dwindled, yet I still represent our Rotary Club. I know there are many more eligible seniors who would benefit from the program. They should contact Foodbank of Santa Barbara and enroll.

When my kids were younger, I also spent 23 years as an officer in the California Army National Guard and assisted many communities in the Southern California area in many events.

Many years ago, when our kids were in the Carpinteria Unified School District, I was quite involved as a coach of various sports with the Boys and Girls Club, and as president of the Carpinteria High School Athletics Booster Club. With Rotary, I was also involved with the Flag Program where we put up American flags at businesses on the holidays. I was the treasurer of Rotary several times, and currently, I’m the treasurer of the Rotary Foundation of Carpinteria.

Craig Meister: My wife Sharon and I have been married 50 years and have been living in Carpinteria for 45. I am a retired CPA who had my office here in town for many years. The firm is now Meister and Nunes and is owned by Shelley Nunes.

Warrior boys basketball runs past Foothill Tech in Bashore Classic

The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team took on Foothill Tech in the opening round of the Jim Bashore Holiday Cage Classic at Warriors Gym on Friday, Dec. 20. Having already met twice in the “young” season (the Dragons won the first game on their home floor at Ventura College 64-43, and the Warriors prevailed 69-59 in the Fillmore Tournament) Carpinteria bested their neighbor from Ventura, 83-65.

Initially, it didn’t look like things were going the Warriors’ way as the Dragons jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but a three-pointer by Jose Suarez evened the game at 7-7. Carpinteria went up by four later in the quarter as Gabe Medel took an inside pass from Luke Nakasone and laid it in. Nakasone, in turn, ended the quarter by drilling three at the buzzer to put his team up 22-15.

The Warriors shifted into another gear in the second quarter with back-to-back three pointers by Dylan O’Neill extending the lead to 32-19. O’Neill scored 13 second quarter points, and Carpinteria’s fast-paced offense had Foothill Tech’s defense scrambling. “Ball movement, we’ve been working on that for the last couple of weeks and we saw them start to get it,” said Warriors coach Scott Sorich of his squad’s performance.

However, the Dragons countered from the inside with six-foot, five-inch Bodhi McDonald scoring 16 points of his own in the first half, primarily on shots near the basket. But Nakasone’s rebound and put-back extended the lead to 41-25. Foothill Tech’s Cooper Mecham executed his own buzzer beater, as the junior guard knocked down a three to end the second with the Warriors up at the half, 41-28.

Carpinteria ramped up the pressure in the third quarter with a full court press, picking up steals and converting them into easy baskets. Medel’s bucket with a little over five minutes left put the Warriors up 51-32. The Dragons weren’t done though, as guard Brian Holloway placed himself just above the threepoint line and knocked down four in the quarter to make it 57-48 going into the final stanza.

A three-pointer by O’Neill pushed the lead up to 60-48, as the sharp-shooting sophomore led Carpinteria in scoring with 26. “We’re trying to get that tempo going up. Last year, we started out with a couple of losses and this tournament last year just lifted us up,” said O’Neill who also grabbed five rebounds to go along with four assists in the game. Ian Reed’s drive to the basket and subsequent free throw late in the game punctuated the victory. Displaying a fine, overall floor game, Reed finished with 12 points, four rebounds and two assists. “Last year, it was really good to play off the ball and get to know that side,” explained Reed. “And now coming back, and if I don’t bring it up, I know what to do as well,” added the senior whose been running the offense this year from the point guard spot.

Medel also was active scoring 12 points and dishing out 5 assists. Suarez tallied eight, Nakasone contributed seven to go with three assists and Mateo Handall pitched in seven. Foothill Tech’s McDonald was the game’s leading scorer with 28 and Holloway knocked down 17. Both teams continued second and third round play on Saturday and Monday.

Phenomenal Asiago Potatoes

The Asiago cheese makes this recipe a sophisticated alternative to traditional scalloped potatoes. The combination of potatoes and fennel, in a creamy Asiago cheese sauce, will put a smile on your face. Best of all, it will put a smile on the faces of your family and friends.

I serve this as an alternative potato dish at our Christmas dinner.

Ingredients:

2 medium fennel bulbs (trimmed and sliced thin) 1½ pounds russet potatoes (peeled and sliced thin) 1 tablespoon butter Coarse salt and ground pepper 1 cup grated Asiago cheese 2/3 cup heavy cream

Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Prepare an 8-inch square baking dish by spraying with cooking spray. Set aside.

Trim stalks from fennel bulbs then cut them in half and remove the core. Slice bulbs and potatoes very thin (1/8 inch thick). Unless you have a sharp knife and a practiced eye, use a mandolin slicer for evenness.

Add potatoes and fennel to prepared dish in three layers (potatoes, fennel, potatoes). Sprinkle the first and second layers with 3 tablespoons Asiago cheese

and ½ tablespoon butter and season each layer with a little salt and pepper.

Pour cream over top. Bake for 45 minutes or until potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork. Remove from oven and sprinkle the remaining ½ cup cheese on top. Return to oven and bake for another 15 to 20 minutes or until golden.

Samantha and Josh Dyer welcomed their baby boy, Karter Ryan Dyer, on Dec. 3, 2019, at Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura.

Karter weighed 8 lbs and 12 oz and was 21 inches tall. Karter’s sibling is two-year old Jonah Patrick and his grandparents are Cecelia and Kevin Murphy of Murphy’s Vinyl Shack in Carpinteria, Kim Priesman of Austin, Texas, and Ruth and Rick Dyer of Gilroy. Karter’s great-grandparents are Betty Murphy of Tustin and Carol Dyer of Salem, Oregon.

“We are so excited that you have arrived, healthy and happy,” said grandparents Cecelia and Kevin.

“You’re a beautiful boy with amazing parents and grandparents too!”

We paddled from the broad, craggy mouth of the Albion River in Mendocino in Northern California, and into tall stands of redwood trees towering above the gentle flow of this flatwater runnel.

Osprey, mule deer and river otters foraged the shoreline as my friend Craig and I paddled to the floating cabins for an overnight.

The stunningly beautiful Mendocino Coast was cloaked in pea soup fog. Visibility was down to nil. However, once Craig dropped his standup paddleboard in the chilly waters and I slid my blue kayak next to his, it wasn’t long before we were shedding layers. Just a mile up the river the skies opened, and the redwoods came to life in birdsong.

The river itself is 18 miles long but tidal flow from the coast can reach 5 miles upriver, so it wasn’t a big surprise to see harbor seals frolicking in eel grass and hauled out on felled redwoods, while mixing it up with rambunctious river otters.

It was the first week of last November. I was a little skeptical about the weather for paddling and photos. I enjoy elements of weather in my photos, but I didn’t want to endure torrential rain. Still, I drove up anyway.

The landscape in Mendocino is so diverse. The wave-battered shoreline is honeycombed with incredible sea grottos and Mordor-like archways. Besides the Albion there are several other rivers that flow to the ocean—Big River, Navarro and Noyo to name a few. I was hoping to capitalize on some favorable weather windows even though it was getting into winter.

Some of those elements involved wind, swell, visibility, the low-hanging canopy of the clouds, warm and cold temps. The tide factored in as well. It all came into play during a week of paddling, keeping camera gear relatively dry in my kayak while enjoying idyllic Mendocino.

Besides enjoying the raptor’s incredible aerodynamics flying in a shallow V formation, it was more entertaining watching it attempt to ignore three raucous ravens pestering the raptor to no end. Their aerial skirmish spilled over a graveyard of driftwood and then back across the coastal prairie. In the end, the northern harrier gave up, flying to the northside of the Mendocino Headlands to allude the ravens.

Craig Comen paddles inside one of many sea caves along the Mendocino Coast. scenic backdrops, residents of Mendocino knew what they were doing when they came together to protect this resource in the 1970s. There’s been no development since, just easy-walking trails and convenient overlooks to soak in the coastal landscape and its inhabitants like Anna’s hummingbirds, northern harriers and chestnut-backed chickadees.

During one of those overcast mornings, one particularly prominent sea stack had a bedraggled, wind-whipped pine tree clinging to its apex. It proved to be an advantageous roosting spot for

a pair of peregrine falcons. I heard them call out before I noticed them in the gray.

I guess they had just finished off a meal though. They didn’t seem too interested in the squadron of gulls and cormorants huddling together on a much smaller rock outcropping just below the two predatory birds.

As I continued to photograph Craig paddling in and out of dank sea caves off Portuguese Beach, I couldn’t help but fix my lens on a northern harrier swooping above the coastal prairie in search of brush rabbits, rodents and ground-

I need to stop here every time I drive along Highway 128. There’s something soothing about redwood trees. Tall enough and dense enough to block out direct sunlight, the diffused light brought on by dense fog doesn’t allow for annoying shadows to infiltrate the frame.

Every time I’ve visited these redwoods there’s never been anyone around. Having it all to myself just allows wanderings through the ferns and beneath the tall timber. It’s a relaxing time to be photographing a subject, something that there’s plenty of along the breathtaking Mendocino Coast.

Mendocino Headlands

Further up the coast, the Mendocino Headlands has always proven to be a great place to photograph from. The broad, sweeping plateau of the coastal prairie overlooking weather-beaten sea stacks, sinkholes and sea caves with large,

The Point Cabrillo Lighthouse stands by itself north of the Mendocino Headlands, and its automated light can be seen while walking the bluffs. Just to the north of the lighthouse are two small coves.

The one closest to the lighthouse has a rocky pinnacle shaped like a crumpled witch’s hat.

For years, I’d envisioned someone on some type of self-propelled watercraft—a standup or kayak—with the ragged coast and lighthouse as a backdrop. I finally got two standup paddlers to make the paddle down from Caspar and work their way inside the cove and around the witch’s hat. It was cold and foggy. The surf wasn’t big but bumpy and uneven, no big surprise there. The shots were what I’d envisioned with the standup paddlers offering the perspective I was after.
