Warrior alumni dusted off their pads to face archrival Bishop Diego on May 28, and although the results of the football game, dubbed War on the Shore IV, tilted in Bishop’s favor 7-0, the overall outcome was a continuation of the competitive spirit the schools have enjoyed for over 70 years. Pictured above, Paul Aguilar (#6) fakes the handoff to Justin Alvarado in an attempt to bust through Bishop’s defense. For more War on the Shore coverage, see Sports on page 20.

The Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club has teamed up with Carpinteria Beautiful to clear litter from the bike path that runs along Franklin Creek by the club. The students regularly pick up trash and maintain the cleanliness of the trail. On Earth Day, the group discussed long-term effects of keeping their environment clean. “The only way for the kids to understand their impact on the planet was to physically see how an afternoon of work can make a difference,” reported Alexa Gaddis, the club’s programs director. Above, members of Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club work with staff member David Acosta to keep the bike path clean.

Kim’s Market. Originally painted by Santa Barbara artist Armando Vallejo in the early 1990s, the 100-foot long Aztec-themed art piece depicts two long serpents, one red and one green, with Tlaloc, the rain god, in the center. The last time the mural received any TLC was 2003. In the ensuing years, its pigments faded and graffiti-removal efforts strayed from the original mural colors. Bellas Artes, a Carpinteria Arts Center cultural arts education outreach project founded by Kathleen Lord and currently under the direction of Cynthia Woo, undertook the recent effort to repaint the mural using grant monies from the Fund for Santa Barbara. Youth instructors Moctezuma, Hernandez and Maria Ramos applied for the funding, led the restoration in April and May and officially unveiled the updated art piece last week.

From left, John Culbertson and David Griggs enjoy a come-from-behind victory in the most recent battle to preserve Heath Ranch Park’s towering giants. Four blue gum eucalyptus trees Rodsspared & Roses were the ax yet again this week when the Carpinteria City Council voted against the revisited Tree Advisory Board’s recommendation for removal. The trees, planted about 135 years ago, are part of a city historical landmark. Their age, natural limb-dropping tendencies and proximity to a playground structure put them in the city’s crosshairs for removal, but outspoken members of the public tipped the council toward preservation.
