The Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club has teamed up with Carpinteria Beautiful to clear litter from the bike path that runs along Franklin Creek by the club. The students regularly pick up trash and maintain the cleanliness of the trail. On Earth Day, the group discussed long-term effects of keeping their environment clean. “The only way for the kids to understand their impact on the planet was to physically see how an afternoon of work can make a difference,” reported Alexa Gaddis, the club’s programs director. The YoYo had St. Joseph’s Carnival attendees feeling like they were winning the war against gravity while saddled up in their spinning swings on July 10. The swinging ride was a new attraction at the mainstay summer carnival. Other fixtures of the event, like the beloved Dime Toss and strawberry shortcake, lived on, all in the interest of raising fun and funds for St. Joseph’s. The racers took the sharp right onto Linden Avenue from Highway 192 at about 2 p.m. and left town on the 192 just as fast as they entered in the whir to the finish line of Stage 3 of the 11th annual race. Let’s see it as an opportunity to give ourselves to it … to be part of something sacred,” commented Tello at the celebration ceremony on June 14. The annual event put on by Parents for Canalino raises funds for school programs like PE, third-grade swim lessons, field trips and educational assemblies. Kim’s Market. Originally painted by Santa Barbara artist Armando Vallejo in the early 1990s, the 100-foot long Aztec-themed art piece depicts two long serpents, one red and one green, with Tlaloc, the rain god, in the center. The last time the mural received any TLC was 2003. In the ensuing years, its pigments faded and graffiti-removal efforts strayed from the original mural colors. Bellas Artes, a Carpinteria Arts Center cultural arts education outreach project founded by Kathleen Lord and currently under the direction of Cynthia Woo, undertook the recent effort to repaint the mural using grant monies from the Fund for Santa Barbara. Youth instructors Moctezuma, Hernandez and Maria Ramos applied for the funding, led the restoration in April and May and officially unveiled the updated art piece last week.

Four blue gum eucalyptus trees Rodsspared & Roses were the ax yet again this week when the Carpinteria City Council voted against the revisited Tree Advisory Board’s recommendation for removal. The trees, planted about 135 years ago, are part of a city historical landmark. Their age, natural limb-dropping tendencies and proximity to a playground structure put them in the city’s crosshairs for removal, but outspoken members of the public tipped the council toward preservation. Another juvenile white shark was sighted off Ash Avenue on Aug. 2 at about 12:15 p.m. A city employee paddling in with a group of kids witnessed the 6-foot shark swim beneath him roughly 40 yards off the beach, heading west toward Carpinteria Point.
