Santa Barbara County air Pollution Control District (aPCD) has announced that the California air resources Board (CarB) will designate Santa Barbara County as “in attainment” with the state ozone standard—a first-time achievement for Santa Barbara County, which is now one of only 14 counties in the state to reach this milestone. aPCD monitors air quality at 12 sites throughout the county, including one in Carpinteria. “it is a monumental day for Santa Barbara County,” said aPCD Director aeron Arlin Genet. “On behalf of APCD and the many individuals who have worked for and with the agency over the last 50 years, I want to thank all of the public and private partners whose actions big and small over the five decades have led us to the success we see today.”

Ozone, or what is more commonly known as smog, forms when nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) react in the presence of heat and sunlight. Both NOx and VOCs come from transportation and industrial sources; VOCs also come from solvents and gasoline. The human health benefits of reduced ozone concentrations are noteworthy, as ozone can harm the respiratory system in a variety of ways, including reduced lung function and worsened asthma symptoms.

Pet shelters seek temporary foster homes for holidays

Looking for an opportunity to help a shelter dog or cat? From now until Jan. 10, Santa Barbara County Animal Services’ (SBCAS) Foster Express Challenge is looking for volunteers to foster shelter dogs and cats for as little as two hours and as long as two weeks.

SBCAS takes in just over 6,200 animals per year at their three shelters countywide in Lompoc, Santa Maria and Santa Barbara. This challenge is designed to help shelters get more dogs and cats out of the shelter during the hectic holiday season, get them more exposure, as well as attract new foster caregivers.

“Nineteen out of 21 of our adoptions last month were a result of this program and we currently have about 15 more dogs lucky enough to be sleeping in cozy foster homes tonight. carpinteria Middle School eighth grade language arts teacher Marith Parton was honored at the most recent carpinteria Valley chamber of commerce Legislative Breakfast for her distinction as a 2020 Santa Barbara county Distinguished Mentor Teacher. The award was given to three peer-nominated teachers who participated in the Teacher induction Program. The induction program pairs new teachers with experienced mentors to help support their first two years in the profession.

It is with great sorrow to announce that Mary Ann Garibay passed away peaceMaria Margaret Sanchez passed away fully on Dec. 5, 2019, at Sarah House in in Fresno, California, on Saturday, Nov. Santa Barbara.

She was born at Santa 23, 2019, after a courageous battle with Barbara Cottage Hospital on Feb. 5, 1955. cancer at the age of 74. Margaret was born Mary Ann spent her childhood growing on June 10, 1945, to Felipe and Consuelo up in Carpinteria, her young adult years Saragosa in Carpinteria, California. Marin Santa Barbara, and her later years in garet will be remembered for her love, Santa Maria.

She was a loving mother, kindness and generosity to her family, grandmother, sister and auntie. Mary extended family members and friends.

William Bruce Humphrey 5/24/1935 – 8/2/2019 William Bruce Humphrey, 84, passed away of natural causes at Serenity House on Aug. 2, 2019.

He was born on May 24, 1935, in Topeka, Kansas, to Wilbur William and Bertha Humphrey. The family moved to Carpinteria, California, when Bruce was a toddler. He was the youngest of three children, and was adored by his older sisters, Joyce and Carolyn.

Bruce attended Menlo College. He met his wife of 64 years, Peggy Hudgens, while home on summer break. They married in 1955. Bruce then enlisted in the Army. Following his service, Bruce and Peggy returned to Carpinteria, where they raised three daughters, Kathy, Marianne and Linda. The family enjoyed spending time at the beach and camping and fishing in the Sierras.

As a child, Bruce had an interest in all things mechanical and motorized.

He became a quintessential car guy. He immersed himself in the car culture of the ‘50s, building and cruising tricked out hotrods.

He had a love for cars and enjoyed driving, up until his death. He rode dirt bikes with his family and friends. Bruce and Peggy spent a lot of time boating the Santa Barbara Channel, and exploring the Channel Islands. In retirement, Bruce and Peggy traveled the entire country in their motorhome, sightseeing and enjoying regional cuisine. Bruce was an avid reader. It was rare to find him without a book or kindle in his hand. He considered himself somewhat of a wordsmith and he enjoyed writing clever and humorous notes and emails.

Bruce was employed by Granite Construction Company in Santa Barbara. In 1977, Bruce spearheaded the company’s recycling initiative by designing and engineering a giant, portable rock crusher.

It was transported to jobsites and used to recycle material from existing roadways.

The material was then used to construct new roadways. It reduced time, cost and pollution. Bruce retired early to spend time with family, relax, enjoy hobbies and travel.

Bruce is survived by his wife Peggy, daughters Kathy (Can) Sirin, Marianne (Gary) Cotter and Linda (Charlie) Thompson. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Peter, Nik and Madeline Sirin (Jake Poliakoff), Will and Luc Cotter, Carly (Thomas) Van Eyck, Maggie (Brad) Pollard and Charles Thompson IV (Amanda), and four great grandchildren, Lilly and Landon Van Eyck and Cameron and Blake Pollard. He is also survived by his sisters, Joyce and Carolyn, cousins and numerous nieces and nephews.

Water purification project’s EIR responds to public concerns

On Dec. 16, Carpinteria Valley Water District’s (CVWD) Board of Directors unanimously certified the final environmental impact report (EIR) for the proposed Carpinteria Advanced Purification Project (CAPP) which involves the construction of a new advanced water purification facility, conveyance pipelines and injection wells to treat recycled water.

The $25 million project will take water that has been cleaned at the Carpinteria Sanitary District (CSD) Wastewater Treatment Plant, purify it, and then inject it into the groundwater basin to supplement the region’s water supply for a variety of needs, including drinking water.

CAPP’s advanced purification employs a multi-step treatment process that includes membrane filtration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet/advanced oxidation, producing pure water to replenish the groundwater basin. Carpinteria plans to use the same advanced purification system that is currently used in 10 Southern California cities and expects to generate an additional 1,100 acre-feet per year of potable water. Proposed injection locations include the Canalino Elementary School and St. Joseph Catholic Church fields.

CAPP is a partnership between CVWD and CSD to increase local water supply for the 15,600 consumers in Carpinteria Valley who currently use 4,200 acre feet of potable water per year.

The EIR responded to comments gathered during the report’s public review, notably concerns of noise levels and vibrations during construction and operation of injection wells and filtration of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water.

Construction of the injection well will require 24-hour drilling for three weeks, with the loudest equipment being the rotary drill rig and grader, which would generate noise levels as high as 85 dBA at 50 feet, a noise level similar to that produced by a passing diesel truck.

Twenty-four hour drilling is necessary because, according to the report, if drilling is stopped for too long the borehole might collapse and damage the aquifer materials.

According to the EIR, natural attenuation would reduce noise by up to 13 dBA at 100 feet (within the city’s environmental guidelines) and would be reduced

Morning Rotary earns two awards

Past Rotary District Governor Sandi Schwartz presented the Carpinteria Morning Rotary Club with two awards recently: the Rotary Citation with Distinction from Rotary International, and the Gold Medal Club from Rotary District 5240. Additionally, Schwartz shared her Ride to Nowhere to eradicate polio program. In return, Carpinteria Rotarian Karen Glancy presented the former District Governor with a pastel she created, titled “Ride To Nowhere,” featuring Rincon Mountain.

significantly more by required mitigation through noise dampening measures such as 24-foot high sound walls and noise dampening blankets. Additionally, for residents affected by night-time drilling, mitigation could include temporary housing.

In a letter from Santa Barbara Channelkeeper (SBCK), the organization’s executive director, Kira Redmond, wrote in general support of CAPP, but noted concern about the presence of PFAS in drinking water. “PFAS can easily move through soil into groundwater aquifers and contaminate drinking water sources,” wrote Redmond. “Although drinking water systems are not currently required to monitor for PFAS, we would urge the Carpinteria Valley Water District to do so voluntarily, and to notify its customers if they are detected so they can make educated decisions about if and how to use the water.”

In the final EIR, authors responded to SBCK stating that CVWD and CSD regularly monitor their systems for water quality in compliance with California’s Title 22, which requires all groundwater replenishment projects (including CAPP) to monitor at least quarterly for PFAS. The EIR also states that reverse osmosis removes greater than 99 percent of PFAS “and therefore, any PFOS or PFOA that is in the raw wastewater should be removed below the notification levels prior to injection into the aquifer.”

Rotarians travel 100 years back in time

Author and speaker Betsy Green gave a presentation to Noon Rotary on one of her “Way Back When” books about Santa Barbara history, recounting a 1919 New Year’s Eve party at the Potter Hotel and a monthly look back at 1919 events In Santa Barbara.

Green has been writing and speaking about local history for more than 25 years.

Trash & Recyclables or Green Waste Pick Up Information for the Christmas & New Year's Holidays Since Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on a Wednesday this holiday season, E.J. Harrison & Sons will delay its regular Thursday trash and recyclables or green waste collection schedule one day to Friday the weeks of Dec. 22-28 and Dec. 29 to Jan. 4.

9:44 p.m. / Assault / 5400 block Carpinteria Avenue

Deputies were dispatched to a coffee shop to assist fire personnel with a possible assault victim. An employee was assaulted by a man who claimed the employee was trying to steal his girlfriend.

Tuesday, Dec. 10

11:31 p.m. / Narcotics / 1100 block Casitas Pass Road

A deputy contacted a woman at the pumps at a gas station. A records check showed her having a warrant.

The woman was taken into custody. A vehicle search yielded heroin and meth.

The woman was booked at Santa Barbara County Jail and the vehicle was towed from the scene.

Wednesday, Dec. 11

10 a.m. / Safety Check / 5500 block Carpinteria Avenue

A woman came into the station to report that her 17-year-old brother had punched her 14-year-old son. She didn’t want prosecution, she just wanted deputies to talk with her brother.

2:35 p.m. / Vandalism / Salt Marsh

City maintenance reported that somebody spray painted a rock in the Marsh’s amphitheater.

7 p.m. / Warrant Citation / 101 and Bates Road

A deputy conducted a traffic stop and a records check revealed that the driver had a warrant. The deputy cited and released the driver.

Thursday, Dec. 12

9:56 a.m. / Broken Window / Palmetto Way

During the night, the window to the Villa Del Mar Condominiums’ office was damaged. It could not be determined if the window was shot with a BB type gun, or if it was an accident. Staff requested a report.

9:58 a.m. / Possession Marijuana / 5300 block Carpinteria Avenue

The school called after finding a 12-year-old student in possession of two marijuana vape cartridges.

Friday, Dec. 13

10:59 a.m. / Possession of Marijuana in a Vehicle / Linden Avenue

A vehicle was stopped when deputies were investigating a fight call. A Santa Barbara resident was driving the vehicle with a jar of marijuana in plain view.

A search of the vehicle turned up two more open marijuana containers. The driver was cited and the marijuana was confiscated.

12:41 a.m. / Possession / 101 Highway at Padaro Lane

A vehicle was seen driving northbound at a high rate of speed on the 101 Highway at the Casitas Pass onramp. A traffic enforcement stop was made at the Padaro Lane onramp. The sole driver was contacted and was not in possession of a valid California driver license. It was discovered that the man was on Santa Barbara County Probation for burglary with full search terms. A search of the man’s vehicle revealed a suspected methamphetamine pipe, several clear baggies with different quantities of suspected methamphetamine (approx. 47 grams total) and an electronic scale. The man was arrested, transported and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail. The vehicle was towed.

Saturday, Dec. 14

11 p.m. / Possession / Via Real and Bailard Avenue

While doing a premise check of the parking lot at the end of Bailard Avenue, a deputy contacted a man and a records check showed that he was on active probation. A vehicle search yielded meth and a meth pipe. The man was cited and released.

1:53 a.m. / Commercial Burglary / 1000 block Casitas Pass Road

Deputies responded to a call for a burglary in progress. A store manager saw a male subject via a security camera inside the shop eating food. The man was taken to Santa Barbara County Jail and booked for commercial burglary.

2:46 a.m. / Suspended License and Possession / Santa Monica Road and Via Real

A deputy made a traffic stop for no license plates at a gas station. The driver was contacted and a records check showed that his California driver’s license was suspended for a prior DUI, and he was required to have an Interlock Device, which he did not. The man’s passenger had cocaine in a closed container of breath mints. Both men were cited, released and the pick-up truck was towed.

What will Christmas yet to come be like?

a monthly muse melinda wittwer Warm Christmas memories lure me into the holiday mood as I turn the calendar page to December. I envision baking cookies with grandchildren, forgetting the mess and the arguments that can happen between two small boys wanting the same big cookie. A vision of the perfect tree all decorated with various treasured ornaments appears before my eyes again, forgetting the trials of picking out a tree, loading it in my vehicle, driving home only to unload this tree, and then spending hours setting the tree up, putting on the lights, unpacking the ornaments, putting these ornaments on one by one until all branches are covered with cute or regal or handmade or antique decorations. My amnesia extends to the extensive labor involved with “undecorating” this same tree and returning my home to a forestless condition, hopefully some time before taxes are due in April.

The images of my Christmases Past include fir trees cut down near Huntington Lake in the Sierra Nevadas. Our neighbors owned a cabin and land in the Huntington Lake area so my father and Chester, the neighbor, went up to the mountains in early December to select and chop down several trees. It was much later when I realized my dad did most of the chopping while Chester supervised the sipping of gin. One year right after I started school, my brother and I each got a small tree of our own to decorate.

Of course, my tree ended up much more festive than my brother’s (just for the record). As I got older, my dad and I became the tree decorators. After my dad was diagnosed with colon cancer, he slowly became more of a tree consultant and critic. He would sit in his easy chair and overlook my efforts. Now, whenever I set up my own Christmas tree, I see my dad watching me and smiling.

My mother came from a large family, so my early Christmases involved large celebrations and lots of good food. Then when I was five, my grandmother died, several of my aunts moved away, and finally we had one Christmas with only the four of us. I found this to be a bit sad and boring and lackluster. Where were the games and the singing and the homemade fudge and gag gifts? Just so you know, the food was still good. Luckily, this “lonely” Christmas was only once as my Aunt Molly decided Christmas with us was much more fun than being home alone with her rather dull husband. I can say all this now as no one is left that would feel insulted. Thus Christmas with my favorite aunt became the norm and lasted until our home in Carpinteria became the new place to celebrate.

Now we come to Christmas Present . . . in Texas of all places. I’m not even sure they celebrate Christmas in Texas, but I’m about to find out. I’ve shipped boxes of gifts, am still working on cards (I know this is an old-school tradition), will bake cookies there, and will enjoy those grandsons. Something new this year was the ordering of items online and having them shipped. This sounds easy, but I do not have the computer/internet gene, and it took many tries before I could complete my orders and actually have them sent to the right addresses. We also spent one Sunday at the mall. To be honest it was rather depressing. Sears was closing— great deals but obnoxiously long lines.

The major stores still in business seemed to have only about three people to help hundreds of shoppers—again long lines of customers just trying to pay for their selections. Also it seemed there were more than the usual number “For Lease” signs sprinkled throughout the mall. Even if I am slow to change my shopping habits, it appears that many other consumers are spending money outside of brick and mortar facilities.

Thinking of my three grandsons, I wonder what type of Christmases will be in their futures. Will real fir trees be outlawed and replaced by artificial decorations? Will turkeys and hams and geese be considered too unhealthy to eat so instead there will be the carving of the Christmas tofu? Will gifts be considered too materialistic so forget writing to Santa? Or maybe Santa himself will be declared obsolete because he doesn’t have an email. I hope the grandmothers of the world will continue the struggle to keep the treasured traditions of their families alive and even strive to create new traditions. As it’s been said before, it’s not the gifts or the food or the decorations that make this holiday so special. It’s how we share and celebrate with our families and loved ones—even the rather unusual loved ones—that buoys us up as we face the new year. So, my friends, “Happy Holidays to all and to all a good night!”

The annual Holiday Spirit Parade came off under a blustery clear sky on Linden Avenue on Saturday, Dec. 14.

Lyhitchenko’s experiences inspire her commitment to “Adopt a Family” program

By DeBra Herrick This holiday season, as we reflect on events and actions from this past year and we make resolutions for the new one, CVN will be spotlighting individuals in the Carpinteria Valley community that have shown extraordinary generosity of spirit and service in 2019.

This week, we learn about Nadia Lyhitchenko (formerly Van Wingerden), the owner of Sage Hill Farm and a Woman’s Club member. Lyhitchenko was recommended by Marybeth Carty for her extensive involvement in this year’s Woman’s Club “Adopt a Family” program which provides an array of gifts and goods for families during the holiday season.

Lyhitchenko conducted interviews with each family in Spanish to learn what they really need and want.

In this Q & A, we ask Lyhitchenko about what motivated her to give back to the community through helping families with gifts during the holiday season.

CVN: Tell us a bit about yourself and what motivated you to become a community volunteer.

What organization are you involved with and what is its mission?

I have been a member of the Carpinteria Woman’s Club and have been involved in the “Adopt a Family” program. This unique program provides Christmas gifts for children of low-income families.



Under the umbrella of Catholic Charities, my role this year was to interview families to determine what gifts would bring joy to children’s faces as they gathered around their Christmas trees. During these personal interviews, I was struck by how simple many of the requests were, such as, diapers, socks, underwear and reading materials.

What’s special about this program?

On a personal note, I wish that the Woman’s Club had been there for our family back in the austere years of my childhood in Toronto. In this crazy, frenetic world of today, this is when we feel we can make a difference right in our sweet town of Carpinteria.

Why do you think it’s important for people give back to their community?

Volunteer work, such as, “Adopt a Family” leaves us with a sense that we

Nadia Lyhitchenko: My passion for learning and teaching foreign languages found its roots from growing up in a humble Ukrainian household in Toronto, Canada. Being the daughter of displaced persons—refugees who were survivors of German labor camps during World War II—instilled in me a strong sense of cultural identity. It also occasioned my desire to make something of myself. As immigrants, we realized the necessity to identify and take advantage of opportunities offered in our adopted country.

As an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher at the Carpinteria Chil-

dren’s Project through Santa Barbara City College, I feel my work has come full circle. Presently, I serve the hard-working immigrants of my community, many with limited literacy skills. Being their vehicle for the integration into our complex society provides me with immense personal satisfaction.

CHS water sports make a big splash

With a student population of approximately 600, the Carpinteria High School boys and girls water polo programs have been making their mark in the CIFSouthern Section. Under the leadership of coach Sergio Castaneda, the Warriors girls and boys water polo teams have already shared or captured two Citrus Coast League (CCL) titles in little over a year.

“Me and John O. (assistant coach John Otsuki) really want to make Carp, as tiny a city as it is, a community known for water polo,” said Castaneda. “So, it’s a long goal, maybe even a dream, but you got to start somewhere,” he explained.

Things started slowly last season, Castaneda’s first year in charge of the girls team, as Carpinteria dropped early matches on the road in Lompoc at Cabrillo and a CCL match in Santa Paula. But on Jan. 22 of this year, in the rematch against Santa Paula at the Community Pool, the Warriors swam away with a 9-8 victory.

The win helped catapult them into a firstplace tie with the Cardinals, and the two schools shared the CCL title.

However, Carpinteria wasn’t finished, going on to beat Pioneer of Whittier in the first round of the CIF-SS Division-Seven

playoffs, 11-8. Then, three days later, they traveled to the Palos Verdes Peninsula and edged Chadwick, 9-7 in the quarterfinals. The road finally ended in the semifinals with an 8-4 loss to Flintridge Prep in La Canada.

Castaneda’s next task was to lead the swim team in the spring. “The team was very small—smaller than I expected,” said the second-year coach.

“This year we’re hoping for that to change as we’re building the program, hoping that aquatics is going to go up and people will stay in the pool year-round.” Even though the squad had few competitors, the Warriors did experience some success with Lexi Persoon earning a CIF qualifying time in the breaststroke for the girls and the boys four by 100 freestyle relay team qualifying for the CIF finals.

Last fall at the beginning of the new school year, Castaneda, who was an assistant to last season’s coach Steven Kihn, was put in charge of the boys water polo team. Carpinteria had a banner year, going 8-0 in the CCL to capture the title. Castaneda was named the Coach of the Year and sophomore

“He (Coby Gonzalez) has the rare thing in a player which I like to call relentlessness, which is essentially that he doesn’t stop until something stops him, whether it be in a workout or in a game,” said Castaneda.

Defensive specialist Nate Endow and exceptional ballhandler Gabe Medel were also named First Team All-Citrus Coast League.

The Warriors fell in the first round of the CIF playoffs to Millikan of Long Beach. Castaneda is now at the foot of his second season as the girls coach, with one victory against Channel League

Carpinteria returns a strong core of players that include goalie Kate Gay, Cassidy Hajducko, Amneryz Ramirez, Natalia Perez, Sadie Mead and Mia Cox. Going into the new year with a 3-2 record overall, they’ll face another challenge, as the Community Pool will be closed until early January. “So, now our plans are to hopefully hear from Cate about using their pool,” explained Castaneda of his team’s plans to stay in shape before CCL play begins. In the meantime, it looks as though the Warriors will continue to make waves, taking on large schools throughout the southland, striving for greatness.

BY CHS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR PAT COONEY Carpinteria High School alum Eduardo “Lalo” Delgado received 2019 NAIA All-American honors in men’s soccer as a goalkeeper for Westmont College.

Delgado, a 2015 graduate from CHS, was among the top of his class. He was a La Centra Sumerlin Scholarship winner and began his academic and athletic career at Westmont College in the fall of 2019. The culminating honor completes a circle of sorts as Delgado is the first Westmont Warrior goalie to earn All-American honors since CHS’ own Casey Roberts did the same in 1977. Delgado ended his playing career ninth on the all-time saves list at the college with 223, behind Roberts who remains atop the list with 601 saves. Delgado starred at CHS before becoming a four-year star for Westmont and Roberts starred at CHS prior to his stellar career at the Montecito-based college.

The 2019 CHS boys frosh-soph soccer coach, Muhammed Mehai, is completing a double loop in the Warrior connection.

Mehai was a standout CHS Warrior soccer player in the class of 2011. He too earned the opportunity to play for the Westmont Warriors where he earned All-GSAC honors as a senior defender in 2015. Now he is back with the CHS Warriors teaching the finer points of the game to young student athletes and proving the adage, “Once a Warrior, always a Warrior.”

The Carpinteria High School football team held its awards banquet on Sunday, Dec. 8, honoring student athletes. Captain awards were given to Conor Bailey, Danny Grimes and Jacob Macias. In the Best Lineman category, Enrique Marin and Esai Vega shared honors. The Coaches award went to Will Collins. The Most Improved honor went to Gage Dinning. The Most Inspirational and Best Special Teams award were both captured by Jacob Mata. Best Defensive Player honors went to Irving Garcia and the Most Valuable Player award went to Diego Hernandez.

A new award was given out in honor of the late Ed Rubio, the Mr. Warrior Award, given to the player that represents high character on campus and in the community.

The honor went to Jacob Mata. The All-Citrus Coast League team was also revealed, as Jacob Mata and Diego Hernandez earned spots on the First Team. The Second Team All-League selections went to Enrique Marin, Irving Garcia and Gage Dinning. The Honorable Mention list included Esai Vega, Diego Mendez and Will Collins.

Senior cheerleaders Kelsey Raunsbak, Andrea Angeles, Ali Ornelas, Jade Miranda, Morgan Wood and Caton Pettine were given special recognition for cheering in their last season of Warriors football. All the cheerleaders were honored at the banquet for their support throughout the season.

Last month, Way of the Orient Marshall Arts Academy competed in the Tri-County USA Wrestling Tournament held in Thousand Oaks. Next up, they’ll compete in Oxnard on Jan. 12 in a tournament hosted by CAGWA (California Age Group Wrestling Association) under the USA Wrestling organization. Boys basketball

December 12 - The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team competed in the Fillmore Tournament, registering a first round win over Foothill Tech, 69-59.

Mateo Handall led all scorers with 19 points, five rebounds and three assists. Jose Suarez had 16 points and Dylan O’Neill contributed 13 points, 11 rebounds and three assists. Ian Reed knocked down 10 points and dished out eight assists.

December 13 - The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team dropped a 58-44 decision to Cate in a second round matchup at the Fillmore Tournament. Carpinteria was led by Mateo Handall’s 17 points and Jose Suarez pitched in eight.

December 14 - The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team played Santa Ynez in a third round game at the Fillmore Tournament, falling by a score of 52-47.

Carpinteria’s leading scorer was Dylan O’Neill with 14 points and Jose Suarez had nine. Mateo Handall pitched in eight points.

The Citrus Coast League unveiled their selections for MVP, First and Second Team selections and Honorable Mention honors. Carpinteria sophomore Coby Gonzalez won the MVP award leading his team to an 8-0 league record, and helping his coach, Sergio Castaneda, win Coach of the Year. Seniors Gabe Medel and Nathan Endow both made First Team, as did sophomore Gavin Lohuis. Sophomores Reyn Clayton, Zack Isaac and Mateo Handall were all named to the Second Team.

Girls soccer

December 12 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team fell to Division Three and third-ranked Oxnard, 3-1. “We scored first on an Aly Springer free kick from about 20 yards out, but at a poor angle,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant.

“I thought our keeper, Ariana Lounsbury, and outside defender, Aly Springer, had exceptional games for us today, but also Riley Wrought and Monse Alpizar were very tough on defense.” It was a one goal difference until about 15 minutes left when Oxnard tallied the final goal. Carpinteria is now 2-5 overall.

Girls basketball

December 12 - The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team squared off against the Cate Rams, falling by a score of 61-21. “The Warriors struggled to hit their shots and their first points came from a pair of free throws hit by junior Jasmine Gilbert,” said Carpinteria coach Benti De La Cruz. “However, near the end of the third and throughout the fourth, junior Hannia Hernandez of the Warriors caught fire and hit four shots from behind the arc.” The leading scorer for the Warriors was Hernandez with 15. Carpinteria’s overall record is now 3-4.

Boys soccer

December 13 - The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team played their first game vs Buena in five years and fell to the Bulldogs by a score of 1-0. “Notable players tonight were Adrian González at the keeper position with six saves, stopper and captain Enrique Gutierrez, twins Caesar and Vincent Rinaldi at right mid and right back,” said Warriors coach Leo Quintero. “It was one that came down to the wire on the final preseason match of 2019.” Deadlocked at 0-0 the Bulldogs found the back of the net in the 78th minute for the win. The Warriors are now 0-6 overall.

Water from a stone

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH About two weeks ago I’d loaded the van with nine boards (five custom, three on speculation and one personal), filled the tank and merged onto Highway 101 northbound at 6 a.m. Five-and-a-half hours later, with one stop for gas near King City, I pulled into the Sunset District of San Francisco.

The wind had switched between weather fronts, blowing cold and hard out of the east, fanning four- to six foot waves all up and down the long stretch of Ocean Beach. Approximately six hundred surfers hunkered shoulder-to-shoulder in black hooded neoprene across the twomiles of shoreline, the surf pouring over into perfectly spinning tubes for almost as far as the eye could see.

Down here in Carpinteria, in the lee of Point Conception, the water is noticeably warmer—even on the crisp and cold mornings. And despite living in Santa Cruz and on the North Coast for a decade through my college and grad school years, I am always surprised by how cold the ocean is up there and how sharky some of the reefs feel where I previously surfed in comfort. I suppose the takeaway is that we acclimate.

Even with the crowd at Ocean Beach there was so much surf that I found myself zipping along on a few with minimal surface warfare tactics. The waves were capping over in frothing whitewater about a quarter-mile outside, then approaching the inner sandbars and splitting into various peaks somewhat unpredictably. Twenty-five guys (and they were all guys) were in my immediate vicinity, but the waves jumped up so swift and steep that only one surfer would actually end up being in the right spot. This made for steep drops and as I paddled into what would have been the best wave of my session, the bottom seemed to fall away. Popping to my feet under the pitching roof of the wave, I held my stance in a cascading drop only to get pummeled at the bottom with a momentary glimpse of the perfect tube I would not be riding out of.

My board was an 8’2” round-pin tail, channel bottom Twin Fin, which provided plenty of glide and easy paddling even if it was much longer than what the surf required that day. I’ve gone all in on the designs in my shaping work over the past year, having been impressed by a younger Australian surfer, Torren Martyn, who rides this style of board by a shaper in Byron Bay down under named Simon Jones. The design makes perfect sense to me: the natural water flow of the pintail outline paired with a Twin Fin set up and channels (four grooves cut into the

Posting Instagram images of the boards (yes, I’m shameless in my selective critique of the Internet) resulted in almost immediate inquiries as to cost and delivery times, which ultimately led to this pre-Christmas delivery trip to Northern California. After surfing, I dropped by a surf shop to leave two of the custom boards for guys who live in San Francisco and had a little chat with the cool bros working there. (I wonder if one of the best things about surfing isn’t just meeting other surfers wherever one goes and talking over the particulars of a region and the boards best suited for it.) I’d shaped the boards with the rawness of Northern California in mind—the long paddle outs, the lumbering, heavy swells and often-lumpy ocean conditions. (Two of the other customs were for buddies in Santa Cruz.)

Back out to the Great Ocean Highway and up the bend at Kelly’s Cove at the north end of Ocean Beach (where the waves were a touch smaller but refracting in interesting wedges off the large sea stacks there) I cut through the Presidio, which always takes me back in my

imagination to old California and the long chain of ships steaming off to the war in the Pacific, and before then to the coastal schooners and square riggers like the one that brought my great-great grandparents and my great-grandmother born off Cape Horn on their way to California from Denmark in the late 1800s.

The Golden Gate Bridge, its sweeping view of the city and the bay, is always another one to strike deep chords of California, and soon enough I was into Mill Valley in Marin County to connect with the board buyer at a shop there.

They bought one of the spec. boards straight off and placed an order for six others, which gives that strange sense of satisfaction of a dream long visualized coming true—to make surfboards and have people experience joy on them is a blessing. And there was another aspect to those long highway miles, that cold water of an old surfing haunt and dropping into a new community of surfers at the shops, then grabbing a cold beer at the fish place next door: by changingup my routine—the day-in, day-out of drop-offs, pick-ups and obligations—I felt re-opened to possibility.

I delivered another one of the custom

boards to a good friend from high school in Newport who now lives in Richmond (where Rosie the Riveter and her colleagues helped win the war), and we caught a Peter Case show in Berkeley.

Maybe it was the long miles, the excitement of the day or the tiredness that comes with a good thrashing in the ocean, but Case’s song “Water from a Stone,” got me where I live. He tells of immigrants from Mexico caught at the border, facing deportation and the fear of an uncertain future. “They need water,” he sings, “living water. Water from a stone.” Beseeching anyone in a position of power (the landlord, the judge) to show kindness and mercy like Jesus himself teaches, the verses take in all of the deep trouble of our time.

“Water from a stone,” what can each of us do to bring it forth?

Girls water polo

December 12 - The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team visited Santa Ynez for a non-league game against the Pirates, capturing an 11-10 win. “Sophomore Briana Rodriguez had a phenomenal game in set, threatening to score any time that the ball came in, and doing so for three crucial goals,” said Warriors coach Sergio Castaneda. Junior Cassidy Hadjucko also had three goals to her name, including the game winner. “The Warriors, despite being down two of their starting players, were down in the fourth nine to 10 before making a couple of strong offensive plays that won them the game 11 to 10.” Carpinteria is now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

Cate School Squash

December 7-8 - The Cate School squash team hosted a tournament at the Santa Barbara Athletic Club with 35 entrants across a variety of age groups. Winning the girls under 17 division was Athena Ke who marched her way to the finals which she then won, 3-1. Ryan Suh beat Morgan Lui in the finals of the boys under 17.

December 15 - The Cate School squash team traveled to Aliso Viejo to play league matches in the SoCal High School League. The A team led by Ryan Su, Morgan Lui and Athena Ke competed in two matches. They won their first 5-0 and lost their second to the top team, 4-1. Lui’s first game of his 3-2 win was 22-20, where games are first to 11 but you have to win by two.

Boys basketball

December 12 - The Cate School boys basketball team opened the first round of the Fillmore Winter Basketball Tournament with a win over defending CIF champions Santa Clara. Junior Nkemka Chukwumerije grabbed 13 rebounds. “The game was neck and neck all the way through the last buzzer,” said Rams coach Andy Gil. Cate shot seven of 14 from the free throw line. “I’m excited about this group, they get along great and play hard and when we clean up a couple turnovers we are going to be a hard team to beat.”

December 13 - The Cate School boys basketball team outscored Carpinteria 20 to eight in the second quarter to win their semifinal game against Carpinteria, 58-44, advancing to the championship of the Fillmore Tournament against Trinity Classical Academy. “A balanced day for the Rams led by Ethan Ng and Nkemka Chukwumerije. Mateo Handall was incredible for the Warriors who led all scorers with 17,” said Rams coach Andy Gil. “I like the way we are coming along defensively, we have a lot of offensive talent but I keep telling our guys, defense will take us far.”

December 14 - The Cate School boys basketball team (7-2) won the Fillmore Winter Tournament beating Trinity Classical Academy in the championship game, 52-45. Cate led at the half 21-19 and trailed 37-31 after three quarters. Cate got six straight stops to start the fourth and scored on five straight possessions to regain the lead and claim the victory. Senior Khadim Pouye was named tournament MVP and junior Nkemka Chukwumerije was an All-tournament selection for Cate School.

“Nkemka Chukwumerije, Ethan Ng, Parker May, Thomas Nettesheim and Mason Oetgen were great all tournament for us,” said Rams coach Andy Gil. “Khadim was incredible in the fourth, able to go inside and outside.”

Boys soccer

December 12 - The Cate School boys soccer team moved to 2-0 on the season by knocking off San Marcos, 2-1, in Santa Barbara. Cate opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Buba Fofanah played a long ball on to Daniel Boateng who went between two Royal defenders, getting off a shot inside the near post from about 18 yards out. “This was a really good win for us, San Marcos is a well-coached Division-two program with a lot of talent, but we were able to stick with our game plan for the most part and seal off the middle of the field defensively, forcing lots of long balls up the sides that our back line of Lukas Hendriks, Harry Corman, Kobby Nimako and Owen Conde-Raggett was able to consistently turn away,” said Rams coach Pete Mack. “In the middle, Parker Bowlin, Will Anderson and Jae Lim did an outstanding job of limiting the San Marcos shot count from the top of the box.”

December 17 - The Cate School girls basketball team battled against Dos Pueblos, walking off the court with a 52-47 victory. At halftime, the Rams led 15-14. “Following the break at halftime, the Chargers quickly took control with a three-pointer and a solid turnaround jumper from Mikayla Butzke, who led all DP players with 18 points,” said Cate coach Laura Moore. “The Rams responded with valiant efforts from junior Deborah Brittain, senior Piper Brooks, junior Lily Zanze, and (sophomore Meena) Baher.” Going into the fourth quarter, the Chargers led 32-30. The score was tied 41-41 at the end of regulation and in their first overtime of the season, the Rams outscored the Chargers 11-6 with shots from Brooks and Baher.

Girls soccer December 12 - The Cate School girls soccer team played Laguna Blanca, beating the Toads by a score of 3-0. The Rams had two goals from Rachel Ma at the 10- and 42-minute marks and one from Tali Nam in the 23rd minute. Grace Blankenhorn distributed assists on the first two goals and Taylor Kane picked up the assist on the final goal. Kane recorded one save, as Cate improved their record to 2-1-1. “The best possession sequence probably came when outside back Lea DeVylder played the ball back to goalkeeper Taylor Kane who passed it wide to defender Olivia Dorion,” said Rams coach Taylor Wyatt. “The team was then able to work through the center where midfielder Neema Mugofwa crossed it back over to the right side for midfielder Grace Blankenhorn to lead an attack.”

December 14 - The Cate School girls soccer team beat Dunn in Los Olivos by a score of 1-0. The Rams got a goal from Charlotte Weis in the 77th minute as Grace Blankenhorn picked up an assist to improve Cate’s record to 3-1-1 on the year. “That goal was a long time coming and the relief was palpable,” said Rams coach Taylor Wyatt whose team scored the goal with three minutes left in the game. “Dunn played a disciplined off-side trap and our defense pushed high as well, meaning the majority of the game was played between Dunn’s 18 and the midline.”

December 14 - The Cate School boys soccer team pushed their record to 3-0 by knocking off the St. Bonaventure squad, 3-0. After several shots, Buba Fofanah opened the scoring in the 19th minute when he nodded in a Daniel Boateng free kick. Fourteen minutes later, Fofanah returned the favor, playing a ball in the middle to Boateng who tucked it away. The Rams held a 2-0 lead at the half but added to it just three minutes into the second frame when Boateng drew a penalty in the box that Harry Corman converted. “Parker Bowlin was outstanding in the middle of the field on both sides of the ball, and keeper Devin Pai managed his box expertly,” said Rams coach Pete Mack.

Joe and Alice Vazquez cruised to see the engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal, just before Thanksgiving, with stops along the way at Cartagena, Costa Rica, Belize and Roatan.
