Carp’s spirit can’t be squashed

The Thomas Fire incinerated any hope for a normal Christmas season, but it didn’t crush this town’s spirit. In fact, the massive blaze that burned all around Carpinteria brought the community together to fight a common enemy and care for friends uprooted from their lives. Roommates Tessie Colson, Joaquin Valle, Diego Gonzalez and Bruce Kincaid felt the spark of community spirit when, in the midst of the Thomas Fire, they teamed up to deliver some cheer in the form of a giant Christmas tree bursting through their Walnut Avenue roof—or so it appears. The friends bought an 11-foot giant from the Boy Scout Lot and sawed it at ceiling height. They put a second stand on the roof and placed the treetop there, then used shingles to disguise the trickery. And the effect is fantastic; it puts a smile on faces of passers by and it sends the clear message—no fiery Grinch can put a stop to Carpinteria’s Christmas.

Chamber extends nomination deadlines

Due to the Thomas Fire, the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce has extended several deadlines related to the 2018 Community Awards Banquet. Nomination forms for Carpinterian of the Year are now due on Friday, Dec. 21 at 4 p.m. The same deadline applies for the Small and Large businesses of the year. Merit Award Recognition forms are due on Friday, Dec. 29. Forms are available at carpinteriachamber.org.

The 60th Annual Community Awards Banquet will take place on Saturday, Jan. 27 at the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club, 4849 Foothill Road. Hors d’oeuvres will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the dinner and program are scheduled for 7 p.m. This year’s event includes a hosted wine and beer bar. Tickets are $100 and can be purchased at the chamber’s website or by calling 684-5479.

Carpinteria Unified School District reopened its district office on Dec. 18 and began a district-wide cleanup of soot and ash deposited by the Thomas Fire. The plan for cleanup includes vacuum trucks for ash and soot removal followed by large water trucks dousing the hardscape and fields. A private cleanup company will be hired to clean all the HVAC systems, and filters will be replaced. Custodians, maintenance and grounds crews will complete the school cleaning before and after the holidays to prepare schools for reopening on Jan. 8.

Westerlay gifts $21K to Breast Cancer Resource Center

Westerlay orchids demonstrated once again that it’s proud to be pink. The Carpinteria-based nursery will donate $21,630 of its october sales of the patented pink Diamond orchid to the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Santa Barbara.

“For 20 years the BCRC has been in existence because of the support we receive from our community, and for the simple-yet-significant reason that our services are needed. We are grateful for Westerlay orchids’ generous gift because it helps the BCRC provide essential support services such as peer-counseling, educational outreach and integrative care programs for women dealing with breast cancer,” said Silvana Kelly, executive Director of the BCRC. Westerlay has selected the BCRC in past years as its Breast Cancer Awareness Month beneficiary. The BCRC has also sponsored no-cost mammograms for lowincome women. “When you witness the important role that organizations like the Breast Cancer Resource Center hold in our community, it’s so easy to get behind their cause,” said Toine overgaag, owner and president of Westerlay. “it makes me and all of our staff proud to harness our product for the benefit of others.”

David Gonzales Jr. was promoted to Marine Corps Staff Sergeant on Dec. 1. The former Carpinterian, who attended three years of Carpinteria High School before graduating from Grizzly Youth Academy in 2009, is now stationed in Knoxville, Tenn.

He has served overseas and around the country while climbing through the ranks of private, private First Class, Lance Corporal, Corporal and Sergeant. His parents, David Sr. and Robin Gonzales, attended the promotion ceremony.

Foodbank extends emergency distributions

The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County announced that it will extend its emergency food distributions through Friday, Dec. 22 to serve regions of the south county identified as high-need. Thomas burns beekeeping site

Mission Beekeeping, an Ventura-based company owned by Steve and Kelly Nimmer, lost half of its bee hives in the Thomas Fire. The 75 hives that were saved were evacuated three times and are now in Carpinteria. The Nimmers are seeking a longterm home for the bees and assistance in rebuilding their business. Mission Beekeeping, founded in 2015, finds homes for hives by removing swarms from unwanted areas and then housing the bees for pollination and honey production.

The Nimmers were woken from their sleep at midnight on Dec. 5 with news of the fire. They rushed to the bee yard and confronted the flames on the ridge. Over the next six hours, they rescued and moved 75 hives as the fire got closer and closer, but on the third trip, the flames had reached the rest of the hives. Video footage is posted on YouTube.

The Go Fund Me campaign for Mission Beekeeping aims to raise funds to purchase seeds to restore the burned bee yards and queen bees for new colonies and new hives. Anyone interested in housing the remaining hives should email info@ missionbeekeeping.com.

Local man dies in auto crash

Carpinteria resident Ruben Garcia was killed in a solo vehicle accident on Dec. 11 while driving southbound on Highway 101 near patterson Avenue. Garcia’s truck was seen swerving before it hit an embankment and rolled over. investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. Garcia worked as a landscaper and was responsible for the gardening at many businesses on eugenia Way. A rosary and mass will be held on Dec. 20 and 21 at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church.

Bridge work prompts overnight highway closure

After several days of closures due to the Thomas Fire, construction crews resumed work on the Linden-Casitas overpass project this week. Highway 101 will be closed between Bailard and Linden avenues from Thursday, Dec. 21, at 10 p.m. to Friday, Dec. 22 at 5 a.m. During that time, crews will be building bridge falsework at the Casitas pass Road overcrossing. The closure was originally scheduled for Wednesday night, but high winds are expected. if weather predictions change for Thursday night, the closure could be postponed further.

Caltrans spokesperson Kirsten Ayars said, “in general, we want to be optimistic— like everyone—that the Thomas Fire is getting more and more under control and work can get back to normal. We don’t want to have delays, but we also need to be realistic about when crews can be out working and when closures can and should occur.”

A concrete pour for the new Casitas pass overcrossing will require the southbound on-ramp to be closed as needed between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. between Tuesdays and Thursdays, Dec. 26 to 28 and Jan. 2 to 4. The Carpinteria Creek bikeway is anticipated to reopen later in January depending on fire conditions and construction progress.

Richard Goodman belongs to an elite group of Santas whose real beards elevate their authenticity.

Retired engineer celebrates 50 years as Santa

Carpinteria resident Richard Goodman began playing Santa Claus during the holiday season in 1967 when a storeowner friend in pasadena asked Goodman to sub in for a Santa actor who was ill. thus began Goodman’s 50-year run of bringing Christmas joy to children around the world.

Now in his 80s, Goodman lives with his college sweetheart-turned-wife, JoAnne, at GranVida Senior Living & memory Care in Carpinteria. he continues to delight local children—and adults— this year with his holiday season portrayal of Santa at GranVida and in the Carpinteria area. For half a century, Goodman has also traveled around the world portraying Santa—including six seasons in China. Goodman and his wife moved to GranVida in 2017, and he enjoys being the resident Santa, bringing holiday joy to the residents of GranVida and their families.

A native of Colorado Springs, Goodman is a former united States Navy radar technician, Korean War hero and purple heart recipient. After the Korean War, he graduated from San Jose State and helped to land a man on the moon working with unmanned launched rockets and as a consultant on the Apollo Space program in downey. Goodman retired from Northrop in 1993 after a successful 45-year career working in the aerospace industry.

Goodman and his wife have enjoyed sailing and traveling around the world, and both became commodores at local yacht clubs. they volunteered at the 1984 u.S. olympic Games where they worked with sailing teams from around the world. All the while, Richard Goodman has continued traveling to play Santa Claus. Since 2006, he has attended reunions in branson, mo., for Santas with real beards. in 2016, the convention included 900 bearded Santas. “i even got knighted—in kilts—by the Clan Claus Society and am a life-member of the Fraternal order of Real bearded Santa Clauses to promote a positive image of Santa,” Goodman said. the Clan Claus Society was formed in 2006 and is now represented in many countries worldwide. members of this organization join together to share Christmastime camaraderie and encourage others to uphold the traditions of the Scottish Santa Claus persona throughout the year.

Community meeting called to discuss fire cleanup

In a town hall meeting sponsored by the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce at Carpinteria Woman’s Club on Dec. 19, community leaders summarized where we’ve been in the battle against the Thomas Fire and what’s next on the road to recovery. While evacuations have been lifted in and around Carpinteria Valley, Santa Barbara County officials warned of potential harm from the lingering blanket of ash as well as future flooding from watersheds stripped of vegetation.

Director of the Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management Robert Lewin explained that there is “nothing to hold the soil. As creeks run through the community, there’s a high probability of debris flow and flooding.”

“I don’t want to sugar coat it,” he continued. “I also don’t want you to panic, because (we) have been thinking about it and planning for it.”

The chamber event was mostly attended by the business community, and Lewin, along with other representatives of state and local agencies, provided some details on contacts with the Small Business Administration and other organizations that might be able to provide some level of aide for lost revenues during the state of emergency. The city, state and federal governments have declared a state of emergency so that disaster relief funds can be used for fighting the fire and in recovery.

City Manager Dave Durflinger commented that the city will provide documentation of when and where evacuation orders were issued for residents and businesses seeking relief for losses through insurance policies. There was some concern that insurance adjusters are disregarding voluntary evacuation orders when considering hardship and losses due to being displaced.

Air quality improves to “moderate,” but ash hazard persists

Dr. Charity Dean of Santa Barbara County Public Health said the good news is that it is no longer dangerous to breathe outside. The bad news is that ash cleanup and windblown ash can still pose a public health risk.

She said in the effort to clean up ash, the most important things to remember are to wear a mask and control the amount released into the air. In order to contain particulates from becoming airborne, she recommended dampening the ash before sweeping and gently sweeping into piles before bagging or binning it.

“As careful as we are, the particles are invisible,” she warned.

Also, for those most vulnerable to breathing dirty air—those with lung or heart conditions—even though the worst air quality has passed, Dean said the effects can be cumulative, so those at risk should still monitor their health after living through two weeks of hazardous conditions.

Lewin said the air quality from the Thomas Fire was the worst he has encountered. “I’ve been in firefighting for 37 years and obviously I’ve eaten a lot of smoke, but I’ve never seen anything like this,” he said.

Lewin theorized that the cold winter air in the upper atmosphere had some impact on the trajectory of the ash and caused it to rain down rather than to disperse over a larger area as it would during a fire in summer. When discussing the uniquely noxious air quality resulting from this fire, Lewin said that he and fellow emergency managers were baffled by just how bad the air quality has been compared to other fire incidents.

Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District Chief ray Navarro gave an update of the latest stats for firefighting.

As of the time of the meeting, the fire had consumed 271,600 acres and destroyed 26 homes in Santa Barbara County. In all, 8,206 fire personnel had been assigned to the incident and the total cost to fight the fire had been estimated at $140 million.

“The Cedar Fire at 273,000 acres was the largest, and this will probably exceed that. Not that we want the badge of being number one; it’s just that there have been two counties involved,” Navarro said.

He commended all firefighters and leadership for staying ahead of the difficult-to-predict fire and setting up perimeters, personnel, equipment and

She and Lewin said that power outage concerns remain because the South Coast is situated at the end of the power-distribution line. guthrie asked that all customers conserve power by switching off lights and unused appliances when possible.

Public input sought on marijuana commerce

on Jan. 1, recreational marijuana sales will become legal in the State of California. In Carpinteria, however, it will be business as usual. Last may, the city enacted a moratorium on marijuana commerce that can be extended for up to two years while long-term decisions are made for how Carpinteria should regulate sales, cultivation and distribution.

At a dec. 11 meeting, the city council opted to gather public input before drafting its cannabis ordinance. Councilmembers asked city staff to conduct an informal survey to gauge where residents stood on the matter. the city has the authority to impose regulations related to permitting retails sales, cultivation, delivery, manufacturing and processing of cannabis.

Given that Carpinteria has 17 months to put its own regulations in place, Councilman Al Clark asked staff why the matter was already up for consideration.

“Why the hurry up to do this now?” he said, then suggested it would be wiser to wait and see how the legalization of marijuana unfolds in other municipalities before establishing local regulations. City planner Nick Bobroff pointed out that drafting new city code can take considerable time. the ordinance would require approval by the California Coastal Commission, which is a multi-month process.

Improving commuter train service between Santa Barbara and Ventura could buy Carpinteria a pedestrian undercrossing at Holly or Ash avenues and a pedestrian bridge over Franklin Creek. the Carpinteria City Council voted on dec. 11 to sign a letter of support for the construction of a second platform and a passenger siding at the Carpinteria Railroad Station, a project that is tied to funds that could be used for the undercrossing and other pedestrian improvements along the railroad tracks.

Railroad sidings, which allow trains to pass one another, are scarce in the area, and construction of a new siding would allow for more frequent Amtrak trains available for commuters. Carpinteria has been identified as a viable location for a passenger train siding, a project that

Thomas Edwards Bailard 11/20/1942 - 12/11/2017

Thomas Edwards Bailard, loving and beloved husband and father, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017.

Born on Nov. 20, 1942, Tom was a fourthgeneration Californian, whose ancestors traveled to California on a covered wagon and helped settle the Southern California town of Carpinteria. Tom grew up on his family’s lemon (later avocado) orchard, which was managed by his father, Robert Edwards Bailard. Tom and his sister, Gwynne Bailard Christison, often played hide-and-seek in the orchard on horseback and, after bedtime, passed notes back-and-forth through a secret hole drilled into the wall connecting their bedrooms. He attended Carpinteria High School (at least, on those days he didn’t find a way to sneak out of class to surf), and could be seen driving his Chevy around town, a bit too fast for his mother Martha Jayne Bailard’s comfort.

Tom spent his undergraduate years at Stanford University, Class of 1964. During his college years, a self-taught pianist, he was a member of a rock-and-roll band named The Lancers, playing gigs all over Northern California. A member of the ROTC program at Stanford, Tom deployed to Vietnam after graduation as a member of the Brownwater Navy. He served as First Lieutenant on the U.S.S. Summit County, an LST-542-class tank landing ship responsible for delivering supplies and troops upriver. It was during these years that Tom discovered his love of sunrises and his natural talent as a leader. After completing his service, Tom enrolled in Stanford Business School. Upon graduation, he joined with classmates Ron Kaiser and Larry Biehl, to found the wealth management company Bailard, Biehl, & Kaiser (BB&K), in 1969.

In 1973, they co-authored the first of six editions of one of the original college textbooks published on the subject of personal money management, aptly titled “Personal Money Management,” which sold more than half of a million copies.

A descendent of pioneers, it is not surprising that Tom was also an innovator in the financial sector, with BB&K set up as one of the first fee-only financial planning practices. He was also directly responsible for the formation of the Bailard, Biehl & Kaiser International Fund, Real Estate Investment Trust, and three Exchange Funds, among others.

After the retirement of his partners, Tom took sole leadership of BB&K, which was later renamed Bailard to reflect the evolution and growth of the firm. As a leader, he cultivated and sustained a company

culture of trust, community and commitment. He thought of Bailard as a family, and it is this quality that helped propel Bailard to be named one of Wall Street Journal’s Top Small Workplaces in 2009.

Even after his retirement, he remained an active member of the firm, as a consultant and chairman of the Bailard REIT board.

Tom was a lifelong believer in community service. He was a Big Brother from 1971 through 1981. He and his wife, Terri, took his then “little” brother, Mark, to the first Star Wars movie in 1977 and followed up with a reunion, of sorts, when they all attended “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” together in 2015.

Tom first started fundraising for his alma mater as an undergraduate. That commitment led to becoming the Chair of Stanford’s Annual Fund from 1984 through 1988. In 1985 he received the Alumni Association’s highest award for volunteer service, the Gold Spike. Tom was also an active volunteer for Stanford’s highly successful Centennial Campaign which began in 1987. In 1989 Tom joined the board of Stanford University Hospital for a five-year term.

Tom’s volunteer career reached far beyond Stanford University, however.

He was a member of the Peninsula Community Foundation board from 1992 through 2002, chairing that board in 1998 and 1999. In the mid-1990’s he served on the board of Menlo School in Atherton and was honored to deliver the commencement address in 1999, the topic: “Giving Back to Your Community.”

In 2007, Tom joined the board of the Palo Alto Medical Foundation and has served on that board ever since. In 2008 and 2009 he spearheaded an effort to “bring the voice of the informed public into housing policy decisions in San Mateo County,” a program called Threshold. Finally, upon his diagnosis with Parkinson’s Disease, he joined the board of the Parkinson’s Institute in Sunnyvale. He once said that, in some ways, getting Parkinson’s and joining that board was a blessing, as it gave him purpose after his retirement from his life’s work at Bailard.

Most importantly, Tom was a deeply loved husband, father and grandfather.

He loved little more in life than to make his wife, Terri Snow Bailard, laugh. They met in 1974 when Terri walked into his office looking for financial advice. He called her the next day and told her that he would like to take her on a date; but, he also warned that, if she agreed, she would have to find another financial adviser because it would be inappropriate for him to both advise and date her at the same time. He liked to joke that her response was that she would rather keep him as a financial adviser. But, in actuality, she chose to go on the date, for which their children are grateful. After a brief courtship, Tom and Terri married in 1975 and had two children, Catie and Rob. Catie married David Schneider this past May at the family home, at which Tom momentarily ditched his cane to put on a show-stopping father-daughter dance.

Rob married Rhiannon Pregitzer Bailard in 2009. Their 3-year old son, Brixton Bailard, shared a very special bond with his grandfather, who he called Doodah.

It is difficult to encapsulate in words what Tom meant to his family—he was a moral compass, he was a model of hard work and initiative, he was a provider, he

was a jokester and story-teller, he was a protector, he was a dispenser of wisdom, and he was a hero.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Dec. 20. In lieu of flowers, his family asked that donations be made in his name to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area (www.bbbsba.org) or the United Way’s special relief fund for victims of the Thomas Fire in the Carpinteria and surrounding area (http://vcunitedway. org/).

It is with the utmost sadness that we would like to inform her family and friends that Angelina Marissa Clark, age 29, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2017.

Angelina was born to and survived by her parents Dr. Eduardo E. Clark and Frances Ann Clark-Mbarkeh. She is remembered by her siblings Eduardo C. Clark, Ruben R. Clark, Carlos A. Clark and Joel Clark, and numerous loved ones in Carpinteria, Santa Barbara, Oceanside and San Diego, Calif.

Angelina grew up in the beautiful beachside town of Carpinteria, Calif.

She attended Carpinteria Kinderkirk, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, Bishop Garcia Diego High School, as well as Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Calif. Most recently, she worked in San Diego, Calif. in the field of business and insurance where she also resided in nearby Oceanside.

Smart, kind and compassionate, Angelina was loved by all that she touched.

Gifted in academics, the arts and business, she devoted much of her passion to the recovery of those affected by mental illness and substance use. She valued her faith in God and volunteered numerous hours to those in need. She loved spending time at the beach and watching sunsets, a setting she loved and where she felt at peace.

Family, friends and others who were touched by Angelina are invited to a Celebration of Life on Friday, Dec. 22, 2017 at 1 p.m. at Reality Church of Carpinteria, 5251 6th Street, Carpinteria, CA, 93013.

Angelina will be buried at Carpinteria Cemetery at a later time and date.

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Domingo Saragosa announces his passing on Dec. 14, 2017 at the age of 100 years. Domingo will be deeply missed by his wife of 65 years, Maria, as well as their eight children: Maggie (Don), Marta (Ken), Daniel (Cathy), Celia, Ana (Todd), Jaime (Dan’ell), Ray (Nicole) and Gloria. Domingo also leaves behind three siblings, Trinidad, Augustine (Carolina), Rita (Faustino), as well as 21 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Domingo was born and raised on the same block in Carpinteria, where he built many homes, including his own. He was most proud of his many years employed at Bates Ranch and Cate School. From his youth, he was actively involved in the parish life at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, and gave endless amounts of his life and time to help with whatever was needed. He was a self-taught musician who found peace and comfort in the classical genre. Although Domingo made countless marks on his community, he will be remembered most for his moral character. He was a role model to everyone who knew him because of his relentless generosity, constant strength, sincere kindness, strong work ethic and true joy in the simple things of life. His good-hearted social nature, smile and laugh will be deeply missed by everyone.

Services will be held on Dec. 22, 2017 at the Saint Josephs Chapel on 7th Street and Ash Avenue in Carpinteria. The viewing will be from 10 a.m. to noon, with funeral (including rosary) beginning at noon.

Christmas is alive in Carpinteria

These past two weeks have been very stressful for California. The Thomas Fire has tested our faith and devastated our communities. Our neighbors have lost their homes and precious possession that cannot be replaced. With Christmas only a week away we need a sign of hope to uplift our spirits, and I believe I saw that today.

I drove down Walnut Avenue in the midst of all the chaos and spotted a Christmas tree erupting from the roof of a house. I had to stop and pull over to get a better look. This tree and all its splendor was covered in ornaments and lights with a star at the top. It was really a beautiful sight to see.

During this traumatic time—as flames, smoke and ashes devastate our lives—it’s nice to know someone took the time to inspire us with a little hope. This glorious tree on Walnut Avenue is a sign that Christmas is alive in Carpinteria and in the human spirit.

Thanks to all the brave firefighters who have put their lives at risk to protect us.

living the green life erin maker The last couple of weeks have had a dream-like (or rather, nightmarish) edge to them, with the sky raining ash and the smell of smoke everywhere. And, of course, the visual impacts of the fire moving across the mountains.

I don’t live in Carpinteria, and because I was assigned as the City representative and liaison at the Emergency Operations Center in Santa Barbara, I missed the visual impact of the mountains on fire here. The pictures I saw made me think of volcanoes. An interesting comparison considering the last time anyone can remember this level of ash impacting communities in the United States is when Mount St. Helens erupted on March 20, 1980. I didn’t actually see the Thomas Fire until early Tuesday morning when it became visible from my house, but like everyone else, my yard had been covered in ash for days by then, and my dog and I were both a little stir crazy from not being able to go on long walks.

Because no other wildfire in memory has had the air-quality and ash impact that the Thomas Fire has had, everyone has been operating in new territory when it comes to the massive cleanup efforts required. If you have lived in California

long enough you have lived through the aftermath of a fire, which includes wind that kicks up ash and the associated cleanup after the fact. But the amount of it and the large scale of cleanup that both public and private entities face is unprecedented.

To clean the ash you need to use some amount of water, but Santa Barbara County is also still in a drought so conservation is still very important. This December is on track to be the driest in 100 years. Using too much water creates runoff, further impacts our already strained resources, and can end up making the ash harder to clean up – it turns into a hard, sludgy, mess that is difficult to clean up.

After many emails and phone calls and coordination with multiple agencies, the conclusion was reached that for streets the best option was street sweeping.

Street sweepers use a small amount of water in conjunction with brooms to push debris under the vehicle for regenerative air vacuums to collect it. While this does create some dust, most public agencies already have a program in place, and the street sweeping picked up approximately 80 percent of the ash, which results in a net positive.

Because this is an unprecedented event, there are a few important post-fire things to keep in mind. One is changing air filters in both homes and businesses.

Another is to clean the ash out of downspouts and roof drains to prevent clogging if and when we do get rain. And do not, under any circumstances, use leaf blowers. These just blow particles up into the air and don’t actually clean them up.

I tried this myself since I was recommending it to others, and found that even just the mist setting on my garden hose was enough to dampen the ash and make it possible to sweep it up. Most of the ash we have seen is wildland fire ash, not urban area, but as a precaution I would recommend wearing a mask and keeping yourself protected when cleaning. From my own experience with cleanup up after the Zaca Fire, I also advise having a bucket of water to dip and clean rags in if you are wiping down patio furniture. I usually just clean with water and white vinegar and use the dirty water on my plants.

I should stress that cleanup for homes that have burned is very different. There are precautions to take when dealing with houses because of the metals and plastics and other chemicals that are used in home building, and in all of the things that we store in our houses.

the reservoirs – Gibralter, Jameson, and Cachuma – have now been impacted by fires in the last six months, so storage capacity and water quality are problems water purveyors will be dealing with not only in the short term, but every time we have a rain event. And if a lot of runoff gets into the reservoirs, then storage becomes an even greater concern for our long-term water supply.

Thomas delivers unwanted white Christmas

The Thomas Fire continues to trudge westward, leaving Carpinteria in its ashy wake. Having burned now for 17 days, the mammoth blaze has consumed 272,000 acres and is 60 percent contained as of Dec. 20. It’s now the second-largest fire in the state’s history, and will likely claim the record before it’s extinguished.

Evacuations for the last affected portions of Carpinteria Valley—north of Highway 192 and east of Cravens Lane—were lifted on Dec. 20, though thousands of homes

in Montecito and Santa Barbara remain under mandatory evacuation. The wind, which calmed for a few days, is expected to pick up Wednesday night after Coastal View News goes to print.

Use protective wear (gloves, N95 mask, long-sleeves) and avoid skin contact with the ash. Ash can be bagged and placed into trash cans.

It’s been a rocky start for Carpinteria High School girls basketball coach Amy Gil who begins her second season at the helm for the Warriors. Last year, the school was placed in a higher league but ended up winless in the Tri-Valley League, posting a 6-14 record overall. With 10 seniors graduated from last year’s squad, Gil will once again have her hands full in a highly competitive league.

Last month, play got under way with the Warriors opening the season, participating in the Fillmore Tournament. Although they played well in stretches, Gil’s players were unable to pick up a win, going 0-4 in their bracket. Carpinteria bounced back to beat Providence on Dec. 4, earning its first victory in front of the home folks at the Warriors’ Gym. With only three players returning from last year’s team, it’s likely to be a rebuilding year for the program. “My goal for my girls … is to up their basketball game to the level of competition they’re going to play, but also to make sure that they have fun and learn to play basketball with each other,” said Gil. Coming back to play varsity are a trio of seniors: Kayana Diaz, Mayra Lopez and Ruthie Vazquez. Of the three, only Diaz played significant minutes last year, and has been rewarded for her efforts by being named one of the team captains this season.

The Warriors will get some help on the court this year from a pair of multi-sport athletes, senior twins Amanda and Mikayla Blair, who have brought their games from the putting green and softball diamond onto the hardwood. Mikayla was also chosen as one of the team captains. Gil will also depend on defensive specialist Jocelyn Esquivel, who played on the JV team last year and was named as a third team captain. Freshman Jasmine Gilbert has also impressed this year with her ability to move without the ball, earning her a spot amongst the top scorers on the team in the opening game against Fillmore. Carpinteria will also take advantage of a strong bloodline, as sophomore Kaela Kelley, who is the younger sister of last year’s senior standout Torrey Kelley, has also stepped up from JV to contribute.

The Warriors return to play on Jan. 3 when they travel to play Bishop Diego with a 6 p.m. tipoff in Santa Barbara.

Warrior coach Amy Gil’s rebuilding experience this year could look like last year’s season for Cate’s girls basketball coach Amy Venditta. “We only had two seniors, and we also didn’t have many girls who identified themselves solely as basketball players,” said Venditta. The Rams will have seven returners this year, but only a few of them are in the starting lineup. The seven are Maya Blattberg, Piper Brooks, Kaliyah Dorsey, Maisie Oswald, Sarah Polowczak, Elle Smith and Laura Vences.

Blattberg has developed into a strong post player, as has the extremely athletic Smith, who will also play some guard. Brooks will run the point position, and Sarah Polowczak will play a major role, as she did defensively in Cate’s only game this year, a victory over Providence. Venditta will also rely on the leadership of Dorsey and Vences, the two team captains.

“This year however, we have a handful of really talented, aggressive, … freshmen,” said Venditta. Deborah Brittain, Lily Zanze and Jasmine Ross make up the class that figures to play big roles on the team this year. Sophomores Kenzie Davidson and Dana Huston-Chen also should have a huge presence in the post with their height and strength. “We are definitely looking to improve our record this year, and despite the long break we’ve had due to the fire, I am confident that we will be a much more successful team in terms of our record in the Frontier League this year,” explained the young coach.

Grace Brethren looks to have a strong team again to defend their Frontier League title. Bishop Diego and rival Thacher, who has lost a few seniors, look to be the Rams closest competition.

“We are so thankful to all of the firefighters and first responders who have kept Cate safe and allowed us to even have a school and a team this year,” said Venditta.

The Rams will return to host Fillmore on Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. after the long delay.

Bishop captures SB County’s first football state title

The Bishop Diego High School football team, long-time archrivals of Carpinteria High School, captured the first ever state football title for Santa Barbara County with a 41-6 victory over Shasta High School of Redding last Saturday, Dec. 16.

While much of the south coast was engulfed in the flames of the Thomas Fire, the Cardinals journeyed down to Thousand Oaks to Cal Lutheran’s William Rolland Stadium to claim the CIF State 3AA Championship. Led by senior John Harris’ 146 yards rushing and three touchdowns, Bishop Diego overcame a 6-0 deficit early in the game to go onto a convincing win. Harris ended his prolific career with over 5,000 yards rushing. The Cardinals’ stellar offensive line helped to churn out 285 yards on the ground, but the two Bishop quarterbacks, Jake Engel and David Gladish, also pitched in with a combined four touchdown passes on the night. The defense also played a big factor in the school’s championship run, giving up just 19 points in their last three playoff games.

Just rode in from ventura

On Dec. 7 at approximately 10:50 p.m. a deputy was dispatched to a convenience store on Via Real. The owner of the store was in his residence at the back of the building after he’d closed for the night, and saw a man standing at the back door of the store. When the store owner approached the man, the man began walking away and the owner then got into his car and followed him. The man asked, “Why are you following me?” but the owner did not answer and remained near him in his car until deputies arrived. When a deputy spoke with the man he said he’d ridden his bicycle from Ventura, but could not give an explanation for why he was behind the store after it was closed. The reporting deputy stated that the man ignored him when asked if he’d seen the “closed” sign on the store. The store owner was willing to sign a citizen’s arrest form, and the deputy placed the man in handcuffs, arrested him for prowling, then transported him to Santa Barbara County Jail.

“Odor of an alcoholic beverage”

On Dec. 10 at approximately 2:15 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a supermarket on Linden Avenue on a report of an intoxicated woman who was yelling and had thrown a drink at the woman who called the Sheriff’s Office. Deputies knew the woman they’d been called about from numerous and regular contacts resulting from her homelessness and alcohol abuse. The woman began yelling obscenities when deputies approached her, and she attempted to walk away from them but was unable to proceed without falling down. The reporting deputy noted “an odor of an alcoholic beverage” on the woman, that she was incoherent, her speech slurred and that her eyes were “droopy and watery.” Out of “concern for her safety,” the reporting deputy stated, and “as she was unable to walk without falling,” he arrested the woman for public intoxication and transported her to Santa Barbara County Jail.

On Dec. 11 at approximately 1:10 a.m. deputies were dispatched to a residence on Plum Street on a report of a domestic disturbance.

While the deputies were investigating the situation, a neighbor came to the residence to report the back window of his truck having been smashed-in with a metal chair. As he was explaining what happened and giving the name of the man he believed had thrown the chair at his truck window (who was also involved in the domestic disturbance), the man noticed that there were other metal chairs at the residence that were the same make as the one that had been thrown through the back window of his truck. Deputies then spoke with the man the neighbor thought may have thrown the chair, but the man denied having committed any vandalism and he was released at the scene, and agreed to leave with the woman he had been arguing with and her 10-year-old son.

At approximately 3:10 a.m. deputies were again dispatched to the area of Plum Street and Carpinteria Avenue on a report of the man they had released earlier yelling at the man who had had the back window of his truck broken and telling him: “Yeah, I did it. What are you going to do about it?” The reporting party stated that the man had taken his shirt off and was challenging the other man to a fight. The man whose truck had been vandalized left the scene to avoid an altercation.

The two deputies then walked down Plum Street and stood in the dark, and saw the man accused of throwing the chair walking with the woman he’d been arguing with and her 10-year-old son.

The man was holding an open bottle of nearly full Pacifico beer, and he was arrested for public intoxication after deputies determined that he was unable to care for his own safety. He was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Arts Center gives and receives support

A pop-up art show will be held at the Carpinteria Arts Center in the near future, and details will be announced as staff organize the event. The pop-up show will benefit community members negatively affected by the Thomas Fire, and will be part of the Center’s efforts to help Carpinteria heal from the disaster through the arts.

The Arts Center is also poised to receive support as 44 nonprofit organizations have been selected to participate in the first annual SBGives fundraising campaign. Donations made through SBGives are being matched by an array of foundations and matched dollar-for-dollar by Carpinteria resident Lynda Fairly.

And in response to the Thomas Fire, the Center’s next and final exhibit in its present gallery will be titled “From Ash to Renewal” and will run from Jan. 10 through Feb. 12. Artist Karen Browdy will jury the exhibit, with an ingathering to be held on Wednesday, Jan. 10, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The remodel of the center at 855 Linden Ave. is scheduled to begin shortly after Feb. 12, and the public will not be allowed on the grounds for safety reasons until remodeling is complete. “From Ash to Renewal” will be the final exhibit in the current gallery, known as “the little white house” at the back of the property.

Blue skies and a flat earth with CVN

Laura Pettit was working a gold claim near Amboy in the Mojave Desert when she met Mike Hughes of Apple Valley, who was preparing to launch himself 1,800 feet into the air in his homemade rocket to prove that the earth is actually flat and not a sphere. Hughes had to postpone and move his proposed launch to private property last November when officials from the Bureau of Land Management and the FAA would not allow his experiment to proceed on public lands.

Citing a conspiracy of “round-earth Freemasons,” Hughes—along with others who believe that the earth is actually a disk—is hoping to photograph the planet from high above to prove his theory. Why he didn’t book a coast-to-coast flight to photograph from is unclear as of press time, as is the question of whether or not Hughes is a Coastal View reader.
