Owners of Peggy’s Used Treasures, Inc. sued for fraud and larceny

On Nov. 30, four Santa Barbara and Ventura county residents filed a complaint against Armando and Wendy Gonzalez, owners of the now defunct Peggy’s Used Treasures, Inc. formerly located at 4915 Carpinteria Ave. The lawsuit was filed in US Bankruptcy Court in Santa Barbara by Bryan Diaz Law on behalf of plaintiffs Margaret Martinez, Cynthia Weiss, Susan Byxbee and Maria Elena Rizzo, and claims the Gonzalezes have committed fraud and larceny and should be held personally liable for the full amount of any debt the couple owes to the plaintiffs (without the cover of corporate bankruptcy which could release them of debt). The plaintiffs are suing for a total of $127,610, to be divided based on receipts presented in evidence as follows: Byxbee, $4,295; Martinez, $7,000; Rizzo, $19,815; and Weiss, $96,500.

SBUSD and Just Communities named in suit over “implicit bias” training

On Dec. 10, the nonprofit Fair Education Santa Barbara, Inc. (FESB) filed a federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles against the Santa Barbara Unified School District and Just Communities Central Coast, a 501(c)(3) with programs throughout the county, including Carpinteria. FESB claims that SBUSD violates federal law through implementing Just Communities’ “so-called ‘unconscious bias’ and ‘inclusivity’ instruction” with “curriculum and practices (that) are overtly and intentionally anti-Caucasian, anti-male and anti-Christian.” FESB is headed by James Fenkner and Mark McIntire of Santa Barbara, and Greg Gandrud of Carpinteria.

In an email to CVN on Dec. 12, Just Communities stated that they had a copy of the complaint and “are in the process of obtaining counsel in order to properly review it, and comment. We have been serving the Central Coast since 2001, and our work of creating leaders and building an equitable community where people are connected, respected and valued, continues due to the support of our program graduates, community members and partner organizations who believe and value this vision.” CVN was not able to reach SBUSD by press time.

Reflection and reassessment

One year on, Thomas Fire survivors look back

In retrospect, one year after the Thomas Fire tore through the Carpinteria backcountry and bore down on remote and historic ranches to the west of Highway 150, Ryan Moore says that he and his dad Matt Moore pushed their luck by staying at their property as long as they did, trying to save a barn and cabin they’d built over more than 30 years as the blaze approached. “The fire took everything anyway,” Ryan said.

One upside to their being up there late into the night of Dec. 9, 2017, was that Ryan could call his neighbors John Wullbrandt and Jean-Claude Rivalland, whose ranch sits farther up the ridge from the Moore’s place. It took four calls close to midnight to rouse Rivalland and warn him of the approaching blaze, but Ryan’s warning gave Wullbrandt and Rivalland just enough time to protect their animals and prepare to fight the flames with equipment they’d staged ahead of time.

Ryan describes a wall of fire 300-feet high, and experienced fire crews standing in awe as the flames approached, admitting that they’d never seen anything so intense. Having bought his land in 1985, and piecing together a barn structure and a cabin from recycled and re-purposed materials, including historic and irreplaceable timbers from Our Lady of Guadalupe church when it was renovated, Matt was understandably reluctant to let it all burn without a fight. But with a mere garden hose to battle with, there was little the Moores could do in the face of an adversary as ferocious as the Thomas Fire.

Ryan said it took some urging, but he finally prevailed on his father to abandon the property as the flames approached.

Ryan drove a truck and Matt took a four-wheeler down the mountain, the flames moving down just behind. In a state of shock, Ryan related how he had to collect himself and slow down on the narrow ranch road to make sure he didn’t crash—a scenario that would have left his life in danger.

Meanwhile, Wullbrandt and Rivalland wet down their house, horses, and donkey and mule they’d brought in with the firehoses they had installed with three 5,000-gallon water tanks filled to capacity. They saved their home, but a studio barn and shipping container with Wullbrandt’s life’s work were lost to the fire, and Rivalland compared the experience to war, describing a terrifying roar like a train and tornadoes of flame.

Saturday, Dec. 8, marked one year since the wildfire bore down on Wullbrandt and Rivelland’s ranch, and Rivelland is realizing that “it takes about a year to adjust to having been in the fire. [But

While Rivalland and Wullbrant saved their home, their neighbors lost everything. “I feel so badly for them—they lost their whole ranch, it’s tragic. But they’re starting to rebuild.” He mentioned another family nearby who also lost their home. The recent rains at the ranch have replenished the ground. “A lot of it is coming back after the fire,”

Rivalland said. “Oaks are coming back, ceanothus, California laurel. We had the most spectacular show of wildflowers we’ve ever seen up here last spring after the March rains. The lupine, in particular, were unbelievable,” he added.

For the Moores, rebuilding is something they are taking their time with, as the ranch was not Matt’s primary residence. Ryan says his dad is going to carefully consider how they layout whatever comes next on his parcel. At the moment, the brush has come back and Ryan said they are considering first installing a fence to bring-in goats to eat-away at the new growth standing more than three-feet

high. Although the destroyed ranches were in Ventura County, the residents are members of the Carpinteria community.

Ryan mentioned how fortunate it was that the county of Ventura hauled more than 20 dump truck loads of burned debris away from their property at no charge. Their land was scraped clean and crews even used large magnets to pull screws and nails from the charred soil.

Homes were also lost on Stanley Creek Road and Gobernador Canyon, but crews from across California and the Western states held the flames from the City of Carpinteria. So named for its starting point on the campus of Thomas Aquinas college near Santa Paula, the Thomas Fire was California’s largest wildfire on record before the Camp Fire last month took the distinction of deadliest and most destructive. Governor Jerry Brown has described these massive blazes as California’s “new normal,” in regard to the intensity and regularity of wildfires. The Woolsey Fire in Ventura and L.A. counties underscored that comment as flames reached the sea at Zuma Beach and Point Dume, having burned across the Santa Monica Mountains in November.

Former CUSD student arrested near school for drug and BB gun possession

On Dec. 5, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Sheriff’s deputies encountered 18-year-old Hector Alvarez of Santa Barbara in the 4600 block of Foothill Road. A deputy recognized Alvarez as the suspect that fled from deputies on Nov. 7, after a vandalism that occurred in Carpinteria. Alvarez was found to be in possession of more than $1,100 in cash of various denominations, MDMA (also known as ecstasy or Molly), cocaine, Oxycodone, Xanax, over an ounce of marijuana and indications of drug sales. Alvarez was also in possession of a CO2 powered BB pistol which resembled an actual firearm.

Deputies contacted school staff at Rincon High School, the adjacent property on Foothill Road and learned that Alvarez, a former student of the school, had previously been on the campus. He was observed by staff and cooperated when he was asked to leave.

Alvarez was arrested and booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on charges of possession of a BB gun on school grounds, possession of a controlled substance for sales, possession of marijuana for sales and other drug related charges. California’s Juvenile Drug Trafficking and Schoolyard Act of 1988 adds an additional three, four or five years of prison time if convicted of possessing a controlled substance for sale within 1,000 feet of a school.

Grand reopening scheduled for Carpinteria Creek bike path

The Hwy 101: Linden & Casitas Pass project has completed restoration and expansion of the bike path along Carpinteria Creek, and on the Linden Avenue and Casitas Pass Road overcrossings. The expansion of the trail provides a new connection from the mountainside of town to downtown without cars and noise. Additionally, the path provides a new bike and pedestrian route to school for Carpinteria Middle School students who live by Casitas Pass and north. Trash collection to be delayed one day during holidays

With Christmas and New Year’s Day both landing on Tuesday this year, E.J. Harrison & Sons will delay Thursday’s regular trash collection schedule one day to Friday in Carpinteria on the weeks of Dec. 23 to 29 and Dec. 30 to Jan. 5. As a special holiday feature, residents may put out twice the amount of trash at no extra charge during the two weeks following Christmas. Trash must be in bags. Harrison will also collect extra recyclables, but asks that customers make sure to flatten all boxes.

Also, Harrison is making it easy for customers to recycle their Christmas trees. All customers need to do is remove the ornaments, hooks, lights, tinsel, bows, nails and tree stand, then cut the tree into sections no more than 4-feet long and place in the yard waste barrel on their scheduled pickup day. Flocked trees now can also be recycled.

DA’s office to present on avoiding scams

Ruth Corona from the District Attorney’s office will give a presentation on elder abuse and avoiding scams at the Rotary Club of Carpinteria at Lions Club Park on Dec. 20, at 11:45am. Corona is an advocate in the Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Unit at the District Attorney’s office. Corona will present on the different types of scams targeting seniors or dependent adults, ways to avoid being scammed and what you should do if you become a victim of fraud.

What is fair taxation?

A letter published in the Dec. 6 CVN (“Progressive taxation,” Vol. 25, No. 11) suggested that progressive taxation is a violation of the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment. But what sort of equality do we mean? Should each taxpayer pay the same percentage, or the same dollar amount? Should the tax burden be apportioned per individual or, say, per family? The answers aren’t simple, and fairness and equality are often in the eye of the beholder. Progressive taxation, while far from perfect, is an attempt to equalize the burden of taxation, and so could be considered another kind of equality.

The writer ’s point about people›s inclination to vote for things that benefit themselves while placing the financial burden on others is a reasonable one, but that›s one of the reasons our government is structured as a republic rather than a pure democracy. Most decisions about allocation of funds are not made by direct popular vote.

I want to thank the new mayor, City Council and staff for a total lack of vision on the Faith Lutheran Church project, and for not taking into account all the valid concerns from the people that live in the affected neighborhood. We came together with real ideas that would have made the project blend into our once-quiet neighborhood. Not one resident in our neighborhood is in favor of the project that passed. As a whole, throughout the process, the neighbors were placated at best, and because of the council’s actions, the city has now opened the gates for further developments of this nature. It is a true shame that the process in place makes folks who may oppose a project for legitimate reasons the bad guys. This is one reason why people won’t become involved in the process. Elections do have consequences. Welcome to Orange County.

City Council transitions, Faith Lutheran development approved

At the Dec. 10 Carpinteria City Council meeting there were two transitions of note. First, the council welcomed new member Roy Lee and returning members Gregg Carty and Al Clark. The council also gave a heartfelt thank you to City Council member J. Bradley Stein for his 28 years of service. Stein is the longestserving council member in the city’s history. Since being elected in 1990, Stein has been a party to many important changes in the community and has helped foster and maintain the spirit of Carpinteria as “a small beach town with agricultural roots.”

In his goodbye comments to Stein, Mayor Shaw shared many compliments: “Legacy isn’t a word to be used lightly, but here it is appropriate. For 28 years, we’ve benefited from Brad’s steadfast leadership and straight talking; he is knowledgeable and caring. One eye on the future but recognizing the jewel that Carpinteria is and protecting and preserving Carpinteria as the last little beach town left. We all owe Brad a great debt of gratitude.”

Additionally, Shaw and the council approved a formal resolution thanking and commending Stein for his dedication and service over the last three decades.

The second transition at Monday’s meeting was the council voting unanimously to elect council member Wade Nomura as mayor and Al Clark as vice mayor. In his opening speech as mayor, Nomura cited his background and experience in Rotary to highlight a specific request he has for the community, stating: “One of the practices that we have in Rotary is that the first thing we do is drop titles, so I’m going to ask the community now if you wouldn’t mind calling me by my first name rather than calling me mayor because I’m one of you and I want to be one of you forever.”

In a similar vein, he stressed that he is only 20 percent of the council, just one out of five voices and requested that in the future, all proclamations and awards be presented by the entire council and not just the mayor. Additionally, one of his goals is to work on communication within the different boards and groups within the city government by hosting annual workshops between the council, Architecture Review Board and the Planning Commission as well as including Sheriff’s Office reports at each council meeting. Nomura would also like to reach more of the community and plans to investigate the option of having meetings simultaneously translated into Spanish, and to reach the youth in Carpinteria by focusing on leadership development with the possibility of forming a youth council.

Nomura ended his comments with the

hope that he will, in his words, “lead by example” during his tenure as mayor.

Faith Lutheran Church development approved

After a long discussion and much public comment, the council unanimously voted to approve the subdivision of a 2.7 acre property currently owned by Faith Lutheran Church into seven separate lots that will contain five new residences. This permit request has been debated over the last two years.

Neighbors in attendance were against the plan’s approval, citing a lack of sidewalks, parking issues, narrow streets and a lack of neighborhood feeling in the new development. Those in favor of the new construction emphasized the fact that they had worked and re-worked the designs with city staff and neighbors over the last two years in attempts to appease all involved in the process and follow all the city guidelines and regulations.

At the end of the presentation and discussion, the council approved the issue with the stipulation that one of the planned driveways be moved in order to give more space between driveway access and an intersection.

Slow pace for PaCE programs in Carpinteria

In a 4-1 split (Lee opposing) the council voted to receive and reassess the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) programs in one year. The PACE programs offer financing up to 100 percent for projects improving existing residential and commercial properties in terms of energy efficiency, water conservation and renewable energy.

PACE began in California in 2008, but was initially met with some criticism for its risk to consumers. According to those speaking in favor of the PACE programs at the council meeting, recent legislation has mitigated many of the risks that affected consumers in the early years of the program. Despite that assurance, Carty remarked, “It almost seems too good to be true, and you’ve got to be cautious with that.”

While the city has little involvement with PACE programs—the onus is on the consumer to do their own due diligence with regard to the PACE project—the programs need approval in order to operate within the city. With a vote to receive the report and reexamine in a year, these programs will not be allowed to operate in Carpinteria at this time.

I will never, ever forget the anguish and helplessness I felt during the Thomas Fire and mudslides. But a year later, the stronger memory is about the strength and determination of people and our community during that disorienting time and how proud I was to be a part of it.

The power of relationships and human goodness were in full force, standing up to the power of seemingly random destruction. We stood on the shoulders of friendships and partnerships built during more ordinary times, before the emergencies. I am forever inspired and forever prepared to stave off all criticisms of human nature knowing full well that, when it matters most, we take care of each other. Goodness will shine through. So many stories came out of the disasters; this is part of mine.

After the mudslides, the highways into Carpinteria were closed in both directions, and stores in Carpinteria were struggling to keep food on the shelves.

Schools were closed so children were not receiving the usual breakfast and lunch, and most parents couldn’t get to work. Jaime Diamond and Jessica Clark sat with others in a coffee shop and put together a plan to gather food for those struggling most. I called Mimi Arduelo, city of Carpinteria program director, who was exhausted from weeks of work at the emergency command center. She understood that Carp residents could not easily get to FEMA and EDD to register for emergency and unemployment support because it was in Santa Barbara, now several hours away by car. We agreed that CCP would host a community gathering to provide emergency services, food and a place to come together to start healing.

Mimi valiantly rallied to commit the key organizations to a police-escorted trip from Santa Barbara to Carpinteria Children’s Project.

CCP board members Marybeth Carty, Nancy Swanson, Michelle Perry, Jaime with her son in tow, and I sat around the table in my office on what must have been Jan. 17—Mimi on my office phone and the Coastal View News on Marybeth’s cell phone—when Mimi gave us the date of Jan. 21 for the community gathering and the paper went to press immediately with the date and time.

All of us felt the need to reach out, to support and to be supported. I have mentioned some names and left out many, many more. It all counted—all the relationships built in better times, all the help of neighbors and strangers. in Ventura, Baby2Baby in Los Angeles and scores of individuals. Fulfilling Jaime and Jessica’s vision, they received delivery of food, diapers, laundry detergent and more. Deliveries arrived by foot and boat and, after the 101 to Ventura reopened, by car. CCP’s Irma Arroyo, Promotores, and over 50 more volunteers from the community helped prepare for the presentation and food distribution.

Our auditorium was packed for the community gathering. City Manager Dave Durflinger, Mayor Fred Shaw and CUSD board member Maureen Claffey spoke, CCP board member Marisol Alarcon made sure it was all in both English and Spanish, over three dozen residents registered with FEMA and got started with unemployment on Jan. 21, and hundreds of bags of food were given to grateful families, many of whom had never had to ask for help before.

All of us felt the need to reach out, to support and to be supported. I have mentioned some names and left out many, many more. It all counted—all the relationships built in better times, all the help of neighbors and strangers. The experts tell us that after a year, we are on the upswing of recovery. Let us continue to be gentle with ourselves and others, though, knowing that our neighbors’ disasters will remind us of our own. And let us bring forward the confidence that we can reach out to help and be helped when we need it because a strong community built on relationships is here to catch us.

Brad Stein has left the building

28-year councilman leaves legacy of protecting Carpinteria charm

Lasting legacy

On the only other election night that Brad Stein tasted defeat, George H.W. Bush was celebrating victory in the 1988 race for the U.S. presidency. Following the then 32-year-old Stein’s failed 1988 bid for a Carpinteria City Council seat, he embarked on a streak of seven-straight successful campaigns, 1990 through 2014.

A neat 30 years after the initial loss, on Nov. 6, 2018, newcomer Roy Lee unseated Stein and ended a 28-year era during which the veteran council member was an unflinching proponent of slow growth and defending the quaint-yet-mighty Carpinteria against developers looking to turn a buck on prized coastal real estate.

Stein was part of many efforts to maintain Carpinteria’s small town charm and balance the budget. Some of his accomplishments include:

• Rejecting a plan to form a redevelopment agency in Carpinteria • Reducing city council member pay to $315 per month • Increasing Development Impact Fees to balance budget • Serving as mayor for three twoyear terms • Serving on finance and general plan subcommittees

Take it from Stein

At the Oct. 22 council meeting, Stein delivered an aside to high school students attending the meeting on assignment for a civics lesson. “People who develop properties will always come in and try to maximize what to do on a property because they’re profit driven,” Stein said to the students, although the project applicant, in this case for an apartment building on Linden Avenue, was also seated in the room. The project ultimately was denied by a council majority that considered the plan unsuitable for its location. Stein’s impromptu lesson to students may have been brought on by an awareness of his limited time remaining to shape the city.

But whether or not the message resonated with the youth in the audience, it was never lost on the scores of developers Stein faced down over his 28-year run.

A political awakening

As a 32-year-old living in the beach neighborhood of Carpinteria in 1988, Brad Stein was compelled to organize against city plans to formalize the streets around his house. Roads were to be widened, sidewalks and gutters installed. To residents, it reeked of a plan to groom the neighborhood for development. First, they petitioned the city and then Stein put his name on the ballot to join the City Council.

It was a different era in Carpinteria politics, one defined by many as pro-de-

Stein, then a contractor, ran on the platform that he would preserve Carpinteria and keep it a small, friendly place to live and raise a family. He advocated for careful stewardship that would help ward off financial unpredictability brought on by boom-or-bust building. “Development is like a pyramid scheme, it never pays for the services it requires in the long run,” Stein said in a recent interview.

In the final week leading up to the 1988 race, anti-Stein mailers, claiming he was backed by out-of-town interests, were distributed to every mailbox in the city. He lost by 11 votes. “It was an ugly thing,” Stein said. “I was just trying to preserve Carp.”

Political pivot of 1990

Undeterred, Stein joined Jordan and Michael Ledbetter in 1990 to form a slate on the ballot that upended the trajectory of Carpinteria Valley. Then 34-years-old, Stein had become a father and was still working as a contractor and as a railroad engineer. The trio unseated three council incumbents, and swung power to slowgrowthers. All of the campaigning was done in the context of a proposal to build

residences, a hotel, gas station and other commercial uses on the 83 acres that is now Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve.

Even after voters elected the threeperson slate, it was unclear whether they’d be able to turn back from what seemed an inevitable plan to develop the bluffs. The outgoing council had already approved the project, which was headed to the California Coastal Commission for review.

The slate maneuvered to be seated on the council in December even though the transition had traditionally happened in January, and quickly voted to overturn the decision, then rushed to the Coastal Commission meeting in San Diego to pull Bluffs development off the agenda.

Allen Coates was city manager at the time, and the first thing he told the new council members was that the Bluffs development plan had to proceed. “(Coates) said, ‘You’re going to have to keep the bluffs development, because we’re $300,000 in debt,’” Stein said. “We had other ideas,” he added.

50-million-dollar man

The battle for the Bluffs got so heated that Stein found himself targeted in a $50 million lawsuit against both him and the city. It was largely a takings-claim against the city, stating that the landowners had

Stein was personally listed because of his employment with Union Pacific Railroad. The tracks run through the Bluffs, so plaintiffs Ralph Brown, Frank Serena and Chevron Oil Company claimed he had a conflict of interest.

“Before each city council meeting, lawyers would hand a packet over saying why I couldn’t vote on the bluffs project,” Stein explained. “Eventually, I said, call the vote.” The project failed 3-2 in the council, so Stein landed in court for three days in 1995 to defend himself against the prospect of owing $50 million. But he didn’t blink.

Judge William Gordon threw out the case against Stein and the city, and eventually the battle of the Bluffs was settled by public acquisition of the 83 acres in 1998, ending an almost 10-year period that defines the Carpinteria of today.

In a heartfelt sendoff to Stein at the Dec. 10 council meeting, council member Al Clark said, “They wanted to basically build a second city on the 83 acres that is now the nature preserve.”

Clark added, “If you like this little town just the way it is now, it’s in large part thanks to Brad.”

duncan’s reel deal m at t d u n c a n Some people can’t help but wreck everything. Take Ralph (John C. Reilly). Whether it’s bricks and stone, windows and doors, or indeed, as it turns out, even if it’s things as diverse in kind as cityscapes, the World Wide Web, and personal relationships, Ralph—aka “Wreck-It Ralph”—was born to lay things asunder.

He can’t help it really, God bless his oafish soul. Although, as we know from “Wreck-It Ralph,” he is a sweet guy when it comes down to it, Ralph’s DNA—i.e., his gaming code—precludes delicacy. Everything Midas touched turned to gold; everything Ralph touches turns to rubble.

Which is why it is a minor miracle that six years into his relationship with Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman)—a hotshot racecar driver from the Sugar Rush arcade game— their friendship is not just intact, but thriving. They hang out every night in the arcade, they tell jokes, play guessing games and sneak into other arcade games. Vanellope sometimes says she’s bored, mostly because her game is too simple. But, if you ask Ralph, everything is perfect.

That is, until he breaks Vanellope’s game. He was trying to help by attempting to fix Vanellope’s boredom by adding a track to her game. But as usual, Ralph just mucked everything up.

Specifically, he breaks a piece of Sugar Rush and the game gets shut down.

Now Vanellope is gameless—which, for a video game character, means she’s like homeless or something. Thanks a lot, Ralph.

But Ralph is going to fix it. He hears that the broken part from Vanellope’s game is up for auction on EBay, so Ralph and Vanellope use the arcade’s recently acquired wifi to travel into the World Wild Web. Luckily, they find EBay, move right into their auction, and quickly win the bid for the part.

Easy as that.

But one small technicality: They don’t have any money.

Still, Ralph is determined to fix what he broke, so he puts together a bunch of viral videos—e.g., one of him imitating other famous characters, one where he does the cinnamon challenge, one where he just chomps his food really loudly in front of a camera—to gain likes, which of course means advertising, which of course means money, money, money.

Meanwhile, Vanellope is off doing her own thing around the internet. And she’s loving life. Her old game was very simple, very predictable, and thus very monotonous.

But the internet… oh, the internet. The possibilities

are endless. She races ultra-fast cars on new and exciting tracks, has slumber parties with Disney princesses, participates in heists, and, in her downtime, shoots hoops. For the first time in a long time, Vanellope feels like she could have an exciting future.

But then there’s Ralph. That’s not how he feels. He just wants to get back to the arcade and spend his days hanging out with Vanellope. And he can’t see how anyone could feel differently.

So, for all the fixin’ Ralph has done (or at least tried to do), all is not right in his world.

Maybe that’s just life. Maybe, sometimes, for someone like Ralph, the best way to not break something is to quit trying to fix it.

As with the original “Wreck-It Ralph,” this movie packs in a nice little moral. When the moment comes, the point is delivered with feeling and impressive emotional subtlety. It’s not a particularly drawn-out moment— the depths of its import are hardly plumbed here—but, still, it’s nice.

More generally, “Ralph Breaks the Internet” is consistently charming.

Take just about any scene and you’ll find yourself amused and endeared.

However, one could complain— and I do hereby complain—that for the most part, this movie is totally formulaic. It’s as if the only standard for success for movies like this is that they string together a bunch of likeable scenes. Set aside whether it all hangs together in an innovative or interesting way. Forget the fact that a story is more than the sum of its parts. Just be happy at each moment—that’s enough.

Yeah, well, maybe it is enough—and it almost certainly is for “Ralph Breaks the Internet.” It would just be nice to see the best of the best—the movies that break the box office and wow the critics—being a bit better.

“Ralph Breaks the Internet” is rated PG for some action and rude humor.

For the past 10 years, The Sportfishing Conservancy and local fishing clubs have hosted the “No Motor Tournament” to benefit the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County in its restoration efforts of the Carpinteria Salt Marsh. This year, those efforts will help fill a critical need created by last year’s record flooding.

On Monday, Dec. 3, local fishing club members and event sponsors met to present the Land Trust with a check for $1,100—money raised at this year’s “No Motor Tournament.” The No Motor Tournament has raised more than $10,000 over the years to help with critical restoration efforts at the marsh while helping to increase awareness of this important and critical marine habitat.

Land Trust Executive Director Chet Work, along with the organization’s conservation guru Bruce Reitherman, were there to accept the check and get a small group of concerned anglers to the edge of the marsh for a view of the destruction. Work and Reitherman explained the effects of the inundation from last year’s winter rains on fire-scarred hillsides, washing thousands of tons of fine sediment into the marsh. While we can never forget the tragedy that the residents of Montecito suffered, they said, nature also took its toll on local natural resources, as well. The tide was low and gave those gathered a clear view of the siltation and terrible habitat loss the marsh experienced.

“With so much at stake this year, it’s important to renew our commitment to marsh restoration efforts,” The Sportfishing Conservancy wrote in a release. “This year’s No Motor Tournament could never have happened without the hard work

Sinker, and importantly, Danny Kellogg and Danny’s Deli that provided the “awesome” tri-tip sandwiches.

Grants were given to 60 local businesses, 10 from Carpinteria, that had been impacted by the Thomas Fire and Montecito debris flow.

WEV and Wells Fargo give $450,000 to local businesses for Thomas Fire losses

On the one-year anniversary of the start of the Thomas Fire, Wells Fargo and Women’s Economic Ventures (WEV) awarded $450,000 to small businesses that were impacted by the fire and Montecito debris flow. Dozens of business owners met at the Carpinteria Garden Park to receive their awards on Dec. 4. With input

from the nonprofit and small business sectors in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, Wells Fargo and WEV collaboratively developed a small business disaster recovery and resiliency grant program.

WEV reviewed 150 grant applications from small businesses throughout the region and selected 60 to receive grant

amounts of either $5,000 or $10,000. Ten Carpinteria businesses received grants, Carpinteria Wine Company, Los Padres Outfitters, Mystical Abode, Red Hen Cannery, Rowan Boutique, Roxanne’s Quilts, The Farm Cart, The Kitchen Gardener, Traveling Pants and Bon Fortune.

Carpinteria holds-off Lompoc, falls to Santa Maria and Long Beach in non-League tournament play

Soccer exploded onto the South Coast scene Dec. 8 and 9, with the NCAA Men’s Soccer College Cup taking place at UCSB and the NCAA College Cup Showcase boys soccer tournament being played at local high schools. The defending CIF State SoCal Regional Division V Champion Warriors hosted one of the opening games against Lompoc on Friday afternoon, Dec. 7.

After getting out to a 2-1 lead at the half, the Warriors held on for a one-goal victory. “The first time facing Lompoc, a great game …,” said Carpinteria coach Leo Quintero, exemplifying what the Showcase is all about, which is bringing in teams—many of them CIF champions—all the way from San Francisco to San Diego that local sides hardly ever get a chance to compete against.

The Warriors struck early when Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson was able to get his head onto a free kick served up by Eddie Mendoza, nodding it past Lompoc goalie Ricky Garay in the third minute of the opening half. “It was just like a bangbang (goal) off two heads,” described Quintero. For Mendoza, the assist was just the beginning of his birthday celebration which happened to be on that day.

The Braves responded in the 18th minute to tie the score 1-1, as JD Montelongo found an opening in the middle of the area and drilled one into the back of the net.

Four minutes later, the Carpinteria offense put an attack together with quick touch-passing to recapture the lead.

The goal came off a well-placed ball

by Angel Orozco to forward Gabriel Ahedo for his second goal of the season for a 2-1 advantage.

The Warriors had an opportunity to add to the lead near the 32nd minute mark, when Solomon’s twin brother, Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson blasted one off the left flank, but Garay was able to come up with the save this time, and the score remained the same going to the intermission.

Lompoc ratcheted up the pressure in the second half and got a bit unlucky when David Lopez’s corner kick bounced off the top of the crossbar harmlessly out of the area. They had another good opportunity for the equalizer when Alex Gonzalez, on a quick start off a free kick near midfield, was able to find Lopez near the goal.

But Carpinteria’s freshman goalie Brian Garcia came up with the big save to preserve the win.

“Today, there were a lot of subs (substitutions) just because it’s a tournament, we brought up some JV kids,” explained Quintero who ended up bringing up a total of five JV players.

Girls soccer December 5 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team played in a non-league match against crosstown Cate with both teams going scoreless for a 0-0 draw. “We are starting to get consistently strong performances from a few of our players (Erika Estrada, Kendra Meza and Emily Montoya to name a few), and it is making a huge difference as it is becoming contagious with the rest of the team,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Carpinteria keeper, Isabel Studt, was up to the task, shutting out the Rams to preserve the tie.

“Today, Karen Gamez had her best game of the season, she looked very comfortable with the ball, and was much more assertive,” said Bryant. “Shayla and Savannah Alvarez also had strong games,” added Bryant. Carpinteria is now 0-6-1 overall.

December 7 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team beat St. Bonaventure in a non-league game, 2-1. “The first goal was a great run by Emmelly Santillan who combined with a few of her teammates before playing a beautiful far post cross to a well-timed run by Emily Montoya, who easily finished to give us a 1-0 lead,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. The Seraphs struck right back with about eight minutes to go to tie the game. A little more than 20 seconds later, Carpinteria answered with a Kendra Meza shot from about 25 yards into the corner of the net. “… we were witness to one of the best goals I have seen in my coaching here, I can’t do it justice in my explanation …,” said Bryant of Meza’s game winner. Carpinteria is now 1-6-1 overall.

December 10 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team beat Rio Mesa in a non-league game, 2-1. Yaneli Silva’s pass to Cydney Smolnikar lead to the first goal, as Smolikinar, after a few touches, blasted a shot past the Rio Mesa keeper. “Our second goal came from Yaritza Santes Rosales who just got off the injured list … utilized her speed and deft dribbling skills as she wrong-footed their last defender, took a few more touches and drilled a shot through the keeper’s outstretched hands,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Carpinteria gave up a penalty kick goal with about ten minutes left. Carpinteria is now 2-6-1.

December 7 - The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team got down 11-2 to Foothill Tech four minutes in, and eventually dropped a 52-50 decision in a second round matchup at the Fillmore Tourney. Dylan O’Neill led the way for the Warriors with 25. “We came out flat with little energy to start the game …,” said Carpinteria coach Corey Adam. “We’re close to breaking through, the boys are playing hard, but we’re making a lot of little mistakes that add up over the course of a game,” added Adam. The Warriors are 0-6 on the season.

December 8 - The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team finished up the Fillmore Tournament with their first win of the season over Trinity Christian, 49-44.

The Warriors were led by sophomore forward Jose Suarez who scored a career high 15 points and Ian Reed registered 14. “We got down 10 in the first quarter, but tied it up just before half,” said Carpinteria coach Corey Adam. “I’m really proud of the boys for how they’ve kept grinding,” added Adam. The Warriors improve to 1-6 on the year.

Girls basketball December 6 - The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team traveled to face their hometown rival Cate, and were beaten 57-12. The Warriors’ first points came near the end of the first quarter as sophomore Jasmine Gilbert hit a jumper from the left wing. But the Rams showed their dominance on the boards and finished the first half up big, 36-6. “Shorthanded and with two key players still recovering from injury, the seven suited-up Warriors knew that they were gonna get heavy minutes and that they were gonna be pushed to their limits,” said Carpinteria coach Benti De La Cruz. “However, even though the Rams were proving themselves to be the better team, the Warriors came out the second half with high energy, more aggressiveness, and showing that they were not going to give up,” added De La Cruz.

December 10 - The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team faced off with visiting Faith Baptist for a Monday night matchup where the home team Warriors fell by a score of 50-16. “The Warriors were once again off to a slow start, and it took them until the closing minutes of the first quarter to get on the board with senior Mariano Campuzano hitting a layup and making one of two free throws from the line,” said Carpinteria coach Benti De La Cruz. In the second half, sophomore Hannia Hernandez hit three buckets for six points, and a couple of shots came from Michelle Alpizar and Jasmine Gutierrez. Campuzano also knocked one down to get things going after trailing at the half, 30-3. “The Warriors are still working on getting their first win, so they will take what they learned from this game as lessons to help them get stronger down the road,” said De La Cruz. Carpinteria is now 0-5 overall.

December 11 - On Tuesday night, the Carpinteria High School basketball team hosted Hueneme for a girls basketball game in their league opener, dropping an 81-17 decision. “The Warriors anticipated that Hueneme was likely the strongest opponent that they would face all year and still shorthanded, they knew that every little mistake would be costly and that Hueneme would capitalize on it,” said Carpinteria coach Benti De La Cruz. The Warriors League record is now 0-1 and overall record, 0-6. “The Warriors are still searching for their first win and with 16 days until their next game, you can bet that they will make the most of every practice and expect to see a dramatic improvement in their level of play the next time they hit the court,” concluded De La Cruz.

Girls water polo December 6 - The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team faced their first opponent of the season, Cabrillo at the Lompoc Aquatics Center, falling to the Conquistadors, 21-11. “Freshman Brianna Rodriguez brought energy and was able to make multiple playmaking movements that netted the Warriors multiple advantages and three goals to her name,” said Warriors coach Sergio Castaneda. Junior Sadie Mead also put a dent into the defense of Cabrillo, scoring four goals. “It was good to see the team finally be able to play in a game setting together, and even though we took a loss, there were multitudes of great plays that showed that the team has incredible potential for the games to come,” explained Castaneda.

December 11 - The Carpinteria High School girls water polo team visited the Nordhoff Rangers for their first league game of the season, netting themselves an 8-2 victory. “Senior Jessica Cruz had a phenomenal game on offense and defense, where she shut down passes repeatedly and was able to get four goals to her name as well,” said Warriors coach Sergio Castaneda. Kate Gay, the Warriors goalkeeper shut down repeated attempts from the Rangers on both shallow and deep ends. Carpinteria is now 1-0 in League, and 1-1 overall.

Cate School Girls basketball December 4 - The Cate School girls basketball team lost to San Marcos, 38-35.

“Captain Elle Smith dominated the first quarter with rebounds and six points worth of put-backs, as well as strong post moves and aggressive defense,” said Rams coach Amy Venditta. The halftime score was San Marcos 17, Cate 12. “Junior Maya Blattberg came alive during that fourth quarter, drawing fouls and creating offensive opportunities for herself,” explained Venditta whose team came back from a 10-point deficit to tie the game at 33. Smith ended the game with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Blattberg ended with seven points, 12 rebounds and three assists. Freshman Meena Baher finished with seven points and four assists, and Piper Brooks pitched in two points, five rebounds and two assists. Deborah Brittain finished with two points as well.

Boys basketball December 6 - The Cate School boys basketball team (3-1) opened up the first round of the Ojai Invitational with a win over Santa Paula, 52-46. Junior Thomas Nettesheim led the Rams with a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, and also picked up four steals along the way. “Khadim Pouye was big in the fourth quarter, contributing seven points in the quarter,” said Rams coach Andy Gil. Christian Perez led Santa Paula with 14 points. The win pushed Cate to the semifinals of the tournament against league opponent Villanova. “It was a very evenly matched game, going back and forth. Each time Cate was gaining momentum, Santa Paula responded with a big three-pointer or bucket,” explained Gil. December 7 - The Cate School boys basketball team (4-1) won their semifinal matchup against Villanova at the Ojai Invitational, 62-52. Khadim Pouye led the Rams with a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds. Ethan Ng scored 15 for the Rams and had five assists, including three three-pointers. Thomas Nettesheim scored 10.

Ng led all scorers with 16 points and four three-pointers, while Khadim Pouye and Thomas Nettesheim contributed nine apiece to go with six rebounds and nine rebounds. Nettesheim earned MVP honors for the tournament, and Pouye and Ng made the AllTournament Team. The Rams were in foul trouble most of the game, putting Thacher in the bonus with two minutes to go in the 3rd quarter. “Good team win, and happy to see that each guy on the team contributed to this weekend’s success,” said Gil.

Boys soccer December 7 - The Cate School boys soccer team took on Division III Rio Mesa Friday afternoon as part of the College Cup and came just a bit short, falling by a score of 3-2. Cate jumped on Rio Mesa early in the sixth minute when senior Jack Deadorff’s long throw took one hop in the box before freshman Daniel Boateng nodded it home. After yielding two goals to the visitors, Cate junior Buba Fofanah struck in the 38th minute on a solo run to knot the game at 2-2. At the start of the second half, a Rio Mesa shot from close range trickled in after junior keeper Devin Pai apparently blocked the ball. Cate outshot Rio Mesa on the day 15-9. “This was far and away our toughest test yet, and we responded well,” said Rams coach Pete Mack.

December 8 - The Cate School boys soccer team after three consecutive near misses, beat Fillmore, 2-1 for their first win of the season, Saturday morning in the second round of College Cup play. Like the prior two games, Cate struck first when junior Buba Fofanah took a pass at the top of the box from senior captain Bailor Jalloh, split two defenders to break in on goal and direct the ball inside the far post. Fillmore equalized in the 67th minute when Cate wasn’t able to clear the ball from just above the box. But the Rams responded when freshman Kobby Nimako found Fofanah on the wing. Fofanah beat two defenders and the keeper for the winning tally six minutes from time expiring. “Despite playing our second game in fewer than 24 hours, and being pretty banged up, we continued to make huge strides today,” said Cate coach Pete Mack. “We played with great energy and pace, and we stayed mentally tough even though we were physically tired,” added Mack. The Rams lost center midfielder Jalloh to injury with 20 minutes to play, but still came away with the victory.

The afternoon game found Cate with just three healthy substitutions against an undefeated Granite Hills squad, but the Rams came out and slowed down the Granite Hills attack to gain a 3-1 win. For the fourth time in as many games, Cate tallied the first goal of the game in the 12th minute when junior Buba Fofanah drove a ball to the Granite Hills near post that deflected off a defender and into the net. Granite Hills equalized six minutes into the second half off a penalty kick. But, Cate answered in the 60th minute, as Fofanah drew three defenders and slotted a ball through to sophomore William Deardorff who ripped a shot from 15 yards past the Granite Hills keeper. Fofanah put the finishing touches on the day, when he beat a group of defenders in the box in the 74th minute and deposited a shot into the lower right corner. “Especially impressive were sophomore William Deardorff who was pressed into running the midfield in Jalloh’s absence, Buba Fofanah who scored two stunning goals and added one assist, and senior keeper Cullen Barber who had a remarkable day between the pipes, finishing with 12 saves and taking away all of Granite Hills’ opportunities in the air,” said Mack.

December 11 - The Cate School boys soccer team won their third straight game and evened up their record at 3-3-1 on the season, beating Thacher, 6-2 in Ojai. In five-consecutive games the Rams scored first when junior Theo Mack picked up his first point of the season, feeding the ball to junior Buba Fofanah who found a spot inside the near post in the sixth minute. But the Toads picked up two goals in the next few minutes to take a 2-1 lead. Two minutes from time in the first half, Mack picked up another assist when he flicked senior Jack Deardorff’s long throw to the far post to sophomore Will Deardorff, who nodded it home. And, in the 18th minute, Fofanah corralled a ball out of the back from junior Harry Corman that he tapped past the Thacher keeper. In the 44th minute, Jack Deardorff kicked a low-line drive into the back of the net from 30 yards out. One minute later, Fofanah took the ball from the wing and beat the keeper to the near side. Cate put the finishing touches on the game in the 68th minute when Will Deardorff netted his second goal of the day, taking sophomore Dylan Vincent’s cross out of the air and volleying a shot inside the far post. The Rams open League play at Santa Clara on Friday, Dec. 14.

Carpinteria High School alumnus Brandon Jordon, now playing wide receiver for Ventura County Community College, caught three touchdown passes in his team’s Dec. 8 loss to Laney College in the State Football Championship Game. Earlier in the season, Jordan won MVP honors for the Pirates in the SoCal Championship win versus Riverside.

CHS and Cate School athletes bring home top honors from SBART

Two Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards were given for the first time in Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table (SBART) history, as brothers Luke and Solomon NahooikaikaAnderson from Carpinteria High School shared the honor. The award is presented to student athletes from each local high school and college.

The twin brothers both play water polo, where Luke was named on the All-Citrus Coast League CCL first team and Solomon was named League MVP, helping the Warriors to go undefeated and capture the first-ever CCL title. During their junior year, the twin brothers were also instrumental in leading the soccer team to a historic SoCal State soccer championship, as well as the Warriors’ first CIF- Southern Section championship in nearly 20 years. They also play on the tennis team where they have led Carpinteria to consecutive league titles with Luke winning the Coach’s Award.

Solomon also runs track in the spring. Both also excel in the classroom where they each carry 3.8 GPAs. Cate School also came home from SBART with honors, as Ram soccer player Buba Fofanah was named Male Athlete of the Week. The junior scored four goals in a pair of Cate victories in the College Cup Showcase over the weekend. He tallied two goals in a 2-1 win against Fillmore, then added two more and an assist in a 3-1 victory over Granite Hills. Ram basketball player Thomas Nettesheim was also nominated for the award. Nettesheim led Cate to the Ojai Valley Classic Tournament title over the weekend, and was named MVP of the tourney.

On Saturday, Nov. 8, the Howard School Hedgehogs participated in the Santa-toSeas half marathon in Ventura, supporting the United States Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program. Headmaster Joel Reed, preschool director Monica Robarge, preschool teacher Katherine Murray and parent Lynn Griffin ran in the event.

Local cannabis farmers delivered a $1,200 check to Carpinteria High School on Dec. 7 that will enable students in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program to tour three colleges and the Ronald Reagan Library. The money was raised at the CARP Growers booth during the 2018 California Avocado Festival, which the 501(c)(6) nonprofit association of cannabis farmers sponsored this year.

“We are thrilled that so many students will have the opportunity to visit colleges and to use that experience to guide their futures,” said Graham Farrar, CARP Growers Treasurer and owner of Glass House Farms in Carpinteria Valley. “Our association is committed to supporting the community, and the success of its students is fundamental to that commitment.”

One of CARP Growers (Cannabis Association for Responsible Producers) first forays into community outreach was sponsoring October’s Avocado Festival and participating in the annual event that celebrates agriculture in Carpinteria. CARP Growers raffled two bicycles, T-shirts and an art piece to raise the money for CHS’s college tours. Carpinteria Sunset Rotary Club was then given the funds for its “Adopt-AClassroom Program.” Students will tour Cal State Long Beach, Cal State Northridge and Cal State Channel Islands as well as participate in a simulated international emergency exercise at Ronald Reagan Library.

Coastal in Carpinteria

Shaping the face of Carpinteria, Reverend John Woods Dorrance developed the first local subdivision, the Dorrance Tract, between 3rd Street and the railroad tracks in the 1920s or 1930s. The tract, shown above in its early days, boasted paving, electricity and city water.

Rev. Dorrance first arrived in Carpinteria in 1902, when he was hired as the pastor of the Presbyterian Church, according to an Oct. 13, 1960 article printed in the Carpinteria Herald. He arrived as a single father of three; a typhoid epidemic in Kansas had killed two of his children and his wife.

In 1912, the reverend married Bertha Sears of Santa Barbara, and the couple first traveled to Utah for missionary work and then moved to Cambria, where Dorrance finished his years as an active minister.

Even when his primary home was elsewhere, Dorrance maintained a house in Carpinteria. Dorrance subdivided the coastal tract in his last decade of life and built himself an “attractive, two-story home” on the corner of Linden Avenue and 3rd Street, according to the Carpinteria Herald article. After Dorrance’s death, his wife CaRpInTeRIa-SummeRland FIRe pRoTeCTIon dISTRICT continued to live in the Dorrance Tract homeCArPiNteriA until she died in 1955.

I hope you are in the midst of enjoying your holiday traditions, but don’t forget to make room for new ones, too. Just this morning, before putting pen to paper to write this column, I half-read an invitation from my ‘little’ sister to start a new tradition by helping her decorate her tree this week. Knowing that she is the keeper of many of the ornaments from our childhood, I first smiled and wondered if we’d revert to the old tradition of arguing over who would place Frosty on the tree, but she was way ahead of me. She ended the request by saying, “I’ll let you put Frosty and the popcorn houses on.” Now there’s a new tradition I can get behind.

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY Nothing excites our senses like the holiday season. Twinkling lights and candles, special treats baking, choruses of song, snowflakes on the tongue and hand-to-cheek greetings from distant relatives crescendo into moments and memories that last a lifetime. At the center of it all are the unique, enduring traditions we share with our families—traditions that delight in each undertaking, embed in our souls and buoy us when we are away. I asked fellow Carpinterians about their family traditions, and here are a few selections.

David Jay recounts “When I was a young child, my mother painted a copy of a drawing by Charles Schultz of the Peanuts characters dancing around a Christmas tree. Every year our Christmas season began with the hanging of that picture on the wall. Unfortunately, the painting was lost in a move my mother made years ago, but I now hang an ornament of that picture on my tree as a reminder of the Christmases of my youth.”

The kitchen is the center of most family gatherings, and MaryAnn Wynne Sweeney shares, “My mom was from Pennsylvania and we always make a Pennsylvania Dutch-style coleslaw for holidays. Also, our extended family is Norwegian and they have a tradition of making lefse for the holidays. We also have tapioca pudding, and one serving has a nut in it. Whoever gets the one with a nut gets a prize.”

Marcia Orland grew up in a small town near Buffalo, New York, where she never had to worry if there would be enough snow for sledding, making snow angels and playing in the snow caves her dad created in their back yard. Among her yearly traditions she remembers, “Christmas was a big deal in our family, which

We rotated where the formal dinner would be held each year, and whoever hosted went all out with decorations. My sisters and I grew very impatient as the days before Christmas seemed to go by in slow motion. My mother got so tired of us asking how many more days were left that she strung twine across a doorway and hung clothespins on it representing the number of days. Each night before we’d go to bed, we’d take off one clothespin and count the number of days left.

“One evening when I was about four and getting ready for bed, I wanted to take a look at the newly decorated spruce tree with its lights on. The tinsel we had in those days shimmered and reflected the colored lights and made everything look so beautiful. In the living room, I saw my mother sitting on the floor in the otherwise darkened room, staring up at the tree in all its splendor. I asked, ‘What are you doing, Mommy?’ and she replied, ‘Come and sit here beside me.’

“I sat down as she said, ‘I’m watching the fairies dancing on the tree.’ I looked at the tree, then back at her and said, ‘I don’t see any fairies dancing.’ ‘Well, I do,

and if you sit quietly, concentrate and believe, really believe, you will be able to see them, too.’ So I stared at the tree, concentrated and believed with all my heart, and sure enough, I saw the fairies

In the City of Three Cultures with CVN

Toledo, Spain is sometimes called the “City of Three Cultures” for the influences of the Christians, Jews and Muslims that are reflected in its history. Taking a break from touring wineries in Spain, Lisa Guravitz and Fred Shaw caught up with the Coastal View News in the historic town of Toledo after exploring wine caves and vineyards near Barcelona and Madrid. The couple continued their adventure in Portugal, and Fred spent his birthday in the Douro Valley, known for port wines.

Cousin time with CVN

Chris Hecox, right, recently flew to the UK to visit her English cousin, Amanda Beart, who lives in a village near Cambridge. Besides touring grand manors, enjoying the countryside and meeting up with Amanda’s friends and family members, the two rented a flat for a week in the Norfolk town of Wells-Next-the-Sea. There, on the coast facing the North Sea, Amanda and Chris took the Coastal View News for a walk on the wide beach, complete with colorful beach huts. The cousins, whose grandfathers were brothers, try to get together every two years. Amanda has visited Chris in Carpinteria, and they’ve also traveled together to Istanbul, Norway, Wales and around the American Southwest.

Wade Nomura took advantage of some down time from Rotary meetings in Australia to visit the Sydney Opera House. Designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon, the Opera House was formally opened on Oct. 20, 1973 after a gestation beginning with Utzon’s 1957 selection as winner of an international design competition. On June 28, 2007, the Sydney Opera House became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
