SB man killed in motorcycle accident

A Santa Barbara man driving a Harley Davidson motorcycle was killed in a collision on Foothill Road near Toro Canyon Road on the afternoon of Dec. 18. Barbara Ford, 83, of Carpinteria was driving a Mercedes Benz eastbound on the curvy road when she saw the motorcyclist heading toward her. He crossed the centerline into her lane, and though Ford swerved to the right, she could not avoid the collision, the California Highway Patrol reported. When the motorcycle hit the car, the 53-year-old rider was ejected and run over. Ford was uninjured, and the motorcyclist was pronounced dead on the scene. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to have played a role in the accident, which is still under investigation by the CHP. Traffic was blocked in both directions for two hours during the investigation.

One of Carpinteria’s most visible celebrity residents Alan Thicke died unexpectedly on Dec. 13 after suffering a heart attack. Thicke was best known for his role as Jason Seaver on “Growing Pains.” Around Carpinteria, Thicke, who was 69 when he died, pitched on a co-ed softball team and was regularly seen in 2015 filming scenes throughout town for a Canadian reality show called “In the Thicke of Things.”

On the Saturday prior to his death, Thicke played tennis with his regular “Montecito Mafia” tennis group, partner Jake Moe reported to CVN. He celebrated winning 6-1 in a set of tennis where he served the ball magnificently. Moe said Thicke gave a great recap of his trip to PETER HUnT Whistler, British Columbia where he received the Canadian Icon Award. He Alan Thicke, pictured with tennis then served the tennis ball and loudly partner Jake Moe, just a few days exclaimed, “Watch out, here comes a serve before his unexpected death. by an Icon, whatever that means!”

Quilts raise $3,800 for Alzheimer’s

A trio of quilts whipped up in one day by the 2016 Quilters Forever group was raffled on Dec. 15 after months of ticket sales raised nearly $3,800 for Alzheimer’s patients and caregivers. Gail Tinsley of Goleta won the queen-sized quilt, Debbie Retzlof of Camarillo won the twin-sized bed quilt, and Dessirée Searl of Santa Barbara won the baby quilt. The quilting event, The longest Day, was held at Roxanne’s: A Wish and A Dream around summer solstice. The event honors Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers for whom every day is the longest day. Quilter friends gathered from all over the tri-counties area, and enthusiasm was so high that the group made three quilts instead of their usual one. Raffle tickets were sold during the six intervening months mostly at events and venues in Carpinteria by a dedicated team drawn largely from the Carpinteria Alzheimer’s Caregivers Support Group.

Fire Department holds quadruple promotion

At Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District, it’s rare to have two coinciding promotions, much less the four that took place on Dec. 14. Before the batch of firefighters received their new badges, Fire Chief Ray Navarro called the district “an organization that’s going from good to great,” and referred to the four as “the leadership of a new era.” Family members, district staff and boardmembers attended the ceremony held at the Carpinteria fire station on Walnut Avenue.

Veteran graves decked with wreaths

Remember. Honor. Teach. These three words underpin the work of Wreaths Across America, a nonprofit organization out of Bangor, Maine that organizes the laying of wreaths on veterans’ graves across the country each year in December.

This year, a call from one of the company’s representatives to Michael Damron, General Manager of Carpinteria Cemetery, brought this seaside city into the national tradition. “All I had to do was a make a call to Joe Escareño,” Damron said. Escareño, who has deep connections in the veteran’s community, rallied support to raise funds for wreaths. With very short notice, Carpinterians donated $15 per wreath, and last Saturday, Dec. 17 saw 50 of the bow-decked evergreens placed on local veterans’ gravestones.

Among the men and women who served our nation and are now laid to rest in Carpinteria are two Civil War vets—one Union soldier and one Confederate. CVN Co-publisher Gary Dobbins, a Vietnam veteran, placed the wreaths on the graves of the Civil War soldiers.

Wreaths Across America encourages those who participate in laying wreaths at veterans’ gravesites to say the service members’ names aloud. “We are not here to decorate graves,” said Karen Worcester, Executive Director of Wreaths Across America.

“We’re here to remember not their deaths but their lives.”

my name is Stella Ruiz, i am in the 4/5 class at Canalino School. i have been taking art classes at the Carpinteria Art Center for the past two years. they are great. We have great teachers, it is a very nice place, cool children attend and we learn really fun art. in the next after school session, after Christmas, we will start a new class and i hope lots of other children attend. i will be happy to see you there and we will all have fun and learn to be better artists.

For all those fearful, frightened, confused and ignorant people, donald trump is our president-elect and will become the president of the united States of America, Jan. 20. in reference to several recent letters, “Frightening power,” “A president who won’t be trusted,” “tough times ahead”—stop your whining! You sound like petulant little children that didn’t get their way. one letter went as far as to draw similarities to hitler. please!

Give us, and trump, a break. For God’s sake, he hasn’t even taken office and the assault is in full swing. this is my hope: that donald trump will be a great president and i am counting on that. Just give the man a chance.

as the reason the president is chosen by the electoral College rather than by the popular majority vote. We are also a democracy whereby political, legal and social equality are shared by all the people where, generally, the majority rules. i will remind him that the Constitution was amended three years after it was written by the bill of Rights, and 17 more times to allow for changing times: we no longer own slaves; black people, women, 18-year-olds can vote, etc. it is a foundation, not a stone tablet. the efficacy of the Electoral College I leave to Constitutional scholars. the other letter (“Agree to disagree”

by Carolyn edwards) was, to quote her own words, “utter nonsense.” bob Franco did not make trump a racist, sexist, islamophobic or ignoramus. trump’s own words, actions and tweets did that. Any reasonably intelligent person hearing him call for a muslim ban and registry of muslims in the country, calling mexicans rapists, criminals and the worst, calling women pigs, grading them on their looks, cheating on all three wives, sexualizing his own daughter, inciting violence against people who do not agree with him (“i would punch him in the face!”), extolling the virtues of Russian and North Korean leaders, inciting white supremacist groups (alt-right), etc., would hardly call him a “common sense” choice to “solve big problems.”

i am compelled to answer two letters published last week. i turn to Sanderson Smith’s (“Give the guy a chance”), which politely asks us to be reasonable and to stop listening to biased media and become better informed. he also asks us to give trump a chance. i will give trump the same respect his right-wing conservative tea-party gave president obama: none.

You may have seen the Vactor 2100 all decked out for the holiday Spirit parade again this year, with Rudolph riding out front on the hose reel. it is a fun way for the Carpinteria Sanitary district to show off the crown jewel in our fleet of sewer maintenance equipment. You may periodically see this big rig in your neighborhood, as well. but do you know what it does and why? this piece of equipment is called a combination sewer-cleaning machine—it does both hydraulic jetting and vacuum extraction simultaneously.

A high-pressure water pump powered by the truck’s diesel engine is the backbone of the cleaning operation. Water is delivered at pressures up to 2,500 psi to a heavy-duty hose on an articulating reel.

Specially engineered nozzles are used on the end of the hose, depending on the size of pipe to be cleaned and conditions such as water level, slope and pipe material. the nozzle and hose are “shot” from one manhole to the next, typically 300 feet or more. the nozzle is then pulled back to the truck at a controlled rate. Rearward facing jets of water from the nozzle cut through roots, knock off grease deposits and pull any accumulated debris in the pipe back to the starting point. Computer monitoring systems control pressure and water flow rates to optimize cleaning efficiency. the snorkel-looking apparatus on top of the Vactor is connected to a high power blower that creates a strong vacuum. Aluminum tubes are extended to the bottom of the manhole and the vacuum is used to suck out all of the roots, debris and other material from the hydro cleaning operation. this debris, along with a bunch of water, ends up in the main debris tank on the back of the truck. excess water is returned to the sewer system or recycled and the debris returned to the district’s wastewater treatment plant for processing and proper disposal. hydro-cleaning of pipelines is a

critical part of the district’s sewer system management plan. We own and operate nearly 50 miles of buried sewer pipe, some dating back to the 1930s. Regular cleaning is necessary to prevent or minimize the frequency of sewer backups and overflows. Sewer overflows, when severe, have the potential to impact public health or impair water quality. each of the system’s nearly 1,000 main sewer pipelines is on a computerized maintenance schedule. Some pipes are cleaned more frequently than others, depending on their condition and other factors. Sewer mains on those lovely streets lined with large trees are prone to root intrusion (roots are especially aggressive during drought years).

Pipelines in flat areas of town tend to accumulate grit, sand and other material that must be removed by hydrocleaning. Grease discharged to the sewer system will congeal in the pipes and can cause blockages. And those socalled “flushable” wipe products have a knack for catching up in the pipes and affecting normal flow. of course we have a strategic plan to address the sewer pipes that require frequent cleaning. You may have also seen the district’s CCtV truck around town—what looks like a normal box truck actually contains a high tech, robotic camera system that we use to video inspect each pipe and document observed defects or problems. We implement a proactive program to repair, replace or rehabilitate sewer lines based on their structural condition and their performance history. the district has many other tools and equipment used to keep your sewer system in tip top shape, but the Vactor 2100 is the workhorse in our fleet. Our crews have it out most days, diligently cleaning the sewer system, but the Vactor 2100 is on standby around the clock to respond to any sewer blockage or emergency condition. even when it is decorated for the holidays!

Obituaries

Dr. Warren Francis Sears Jr. 1/31/1920 – 10/10/2016

Dr. Warren Francis Sears Jr. passed away peacefully Monday, Oct. 10, 2016, in South Jordan, Utah. He was 96 years old. He left behind a lifetime legacy of adventure, service to community and country, and love for family. He now reunites with his beloved wife of 44 years, Madelyn Pauline (Krack) Sears.

Warren was born in Los Angeles, Calif., on Jan. 31, 1920 to Warren F. Sears Sr. and Norma Margaret (Davis) Sears. He was 9 years old when the Great Depression hit causing his family to move around and take various jobs over the years. As a young boy, he and his best friend built crystal radios to attach to their bikes. They also trained homing pigeons to bring messages to each other. Warren attended Van Nuys High School where he became a competitive gymnast. He also worked for his father’s Feed and Grain store, lifting heavy sacks of grain for delivery. As a young man, Warren gained passage on a cargo ship headed to Hawaii as a cook’s assistant. Once there, he gained employment harvesting pineapples on a Dole pineapple plantation.

Not long after Warren returned home, Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese. He joined the Army Air Corps as part of the United States’ entrance into WW2. He was trained to become a radio

operator and a waist gunner on a flight crew for a B-24 bomber. He clocked 52 missions in the Pacific. One impactful memory was of watching his plane being shot down while temporarily flying in formation with another crew. Warren said he was never more grateful to be an American as he was on that final flight home. As his plane approached San Francisco and flew over the Golden Gate Bridge, there were no words to describe the feelings of gratitude and pride in a country worth fighting for and defending.

After the war, Warren attended Occidental College in Los Angeles and went on to become a Doctor of Chiropractic.

He set up practice in Hollywood for a few years. One day while traveling through a very small agricultural town called Carpinteria, he stopped at a gas station and asked the attendant if there were any chiropractors in town. To which the attendant responded, “No, but we sure need one!” That was all it took. Before long Dr. Warren Sears had set up a tiny office where the seal fountain now stands.

Dr. Sears eventually moved his practice over to 5212 Carpinteria Ave. He became an avid skin diver and bow hunter, enjoying what the back hills and the Channel Islands had to offer. He was known to invite patients to his lobster barbecues.

He was a member of the Rotary and for many years organized the annual Loyalty Day parade. In 1966, he and Madelyn purchased the Victorian home on 8th Street, and it became their passion to restore and maintain it.

Dr. Sears joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and has served in many ways since then. He is cherished and remembered by those who knew him well. He has a son, Kevin, who preceded him in death. His surviving children are Kim Barry Sears, Coleen Norma Sears, Kit Norman Sears (Kathy), Cyndi Diane Donovan (Steve), Michael Don Sears (Adele) and Vince Scott (Michele) Sears.

Funeral services were held on Oct. 22, 2016 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1501 Linden Ave.

Frances Garvin Puccinelli 1951-2016

Frances Garvin Puccinelli, age 65, of Santa Barbara, Carpinteria and Ventura, passed away peacefully with her husband Keith Puccinelli and sister Nancy Garvin by her side, from PSP/Parkinson’s Disease, on Dec. 9, 2016 at 8 p.m. at Serenity House in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Fran Puccinelli was born Frances Richardson Garvin on March 20, 1951 in Lompoc, Calif. to Frances Harrison Garvin and James R. Garvin. She grew up on the shores of the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara and Carpinteria and from an early age was known as a headstrong, energetic, resolved individual set on making her own way in the world, and that she did with much gusto and fortitude. Immediately after graduating Santa Barbara High School in 1969, Franny grabbed her passport and took off for new territory. After a series of adventures, and a few youthful mishaps, she returned home to Padaro Lane to build a life and her community.

From the early 1980s to 2005, Carpinteria was Fran’s entrepreneurial studio and she quickly earned the unofficial title “Mayor of Linden Avenue,” because of the four thriving businesses she created. Her first success was The Deli House, known for its homemade soups and sandwiches served with friendly conversation. Before the coffee house craze, she opened The Coffee Grinder and it quickly became a local hotspot and fountain of community activity. It also was a showcase for curiosities and early Latin American folk objects. She loved folk and outsider art and started the Frances Puccinelli Gallery in 1990 where she exhibited artists like Mose Toliver, Howard Finster and Bessie Harvey along side local contemporary artists.

SOAP was her last retail venture before retiring, and it continues on under the ownership of Daniel Case.

During her “biz” years, Fran was an active member of the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce and served as Chair of the Board of Directors in 1988.

In 1986, she was one of the local leaders, along with Debbie Murphy, Rob Godfrey, Connie Korbel, Bob Ealee and John Franklin, who founded the annual California Avocado Festival—an event that celebrated its 30th anniversary last April and now boasts over 110,000 visitors. She assisted in the establishment of the Carpinteria Arts Center and farther north she was a diehard supporter of the Contemporary Arts Forum in downtown Santa Barbara. She was a dedicated advocate for small and local business, the arts, and the environment and was involved with dozens of worthy local nonprofits and causes including Heal the Ocean, Carpinteria Arts Center, and Girls’ Club.

In April 1983, the two met through a mutual friend at a wedding where Fran was catering. It is reported on good authority, that Fran came to work the next day and said, “I met my future husband last night.” It was a whirlwind courtship and the two married on Feb. 18, 1984.

Together, they wove a dynamic web of friendship, creativity and style they described in a 2012 interview at apartmenttherapy.com as “Puccinality, (poochin-ality), a free-wheeling yet tasteful stew of modern … meets contemporary … meets folk … Juxtaposition and surprise.” A vibrant style infused with color, joy, grace and much laughter.

While Franny would never call herself an artist, she was a talented and prolific crafter of textiles, mosaics and friendships. She was a founding member of the Association of Creative Females (jokingly nicked named the Montecito Hookers), a monthly meeting of women artists who made stunning hooked rugs, pillows and table runners that can be seen in homes throughout the county. In a recent message from curator and arts advocate Rita Ferri to Keith Puccinelli, she expressed it aptly, “[Fran]. You were the art. You accomplished so much that you exhausted the rest of us . . . No one could keep up with you . . . your great laugh will endure. And did I mention that your sparkling eyes are unforgettable. You were more beautiful with short brown hair than most mermaids with flaxen tresses could ever hope to be . . . Fran, you are just pure love and that will live forever.”

Fran Puccinelli is survived by her husband, love of her life and partner in crime, artist Keith Puccinelli and their beloved coal black cat Snowball.

She also leaves behind her sister Nancy Garvin, nieces Christina Garvin and Mary-Liz Chapman, and grand-niece and -nephews Taylor Chapman, Kyle James Chapman, Gavin Puccinelli Chapman; sister- and brother-in-law Louise and Paul Rosel, niece Frances Rosel and her husband Kevin O’Donnell; nephew Christian Rosel and his wife Elaine Rosel, grand-niece Maddie O’Donnell; and brother- and sister-in-law Harrison Garvin and Penny Minchin-Garvin, niece Alexandra Lucy Garvin, nephews Bodhi James Garvin, Nik Minchin, and Simon Minchin; sister-in-law Jessica Puccinelli; and a vast and rich network of family, friends and artists.

Let’s get this party started

$90 million in Measure U money begins to flow

By Christian Beamish A strong majority of stakeholders in the Carpinteria Unified School District—teachers, staff, facilities experts, the school board and most-importantly, the community at large—agreed that each of the district’s seven campuses is in need of major upgrades. Now, two years after passing Measure U, Carpinteria and Summerland voters are about to see their aging schools transformed into 21st-century educational institutions.

As the 66 percent of Carpinterians who voted for Measure U well know, the bond measure raises the $90 million needed for campus improvements by increasing property taxes at a rate of $47 per $100,000 of assessed property value. With work set to begin early in 2017, the complex logistics and sheer scale of the projects have had CUSD facilities planners working carefully with architectural firms and consultants on timelines and design elements to ensure that construction will remain on schedule and within budget.

Unforeseeable costs and delays, such as the kitchen drains and plumbing that school officials recently discovered need replacing at Aliso, Canalino and Carpinteria Middle schools, can plague any large undertaking. But perhaps the biggest challenge the Measure U projects face is gaining approval from the Division of the State Architect. “If there’s an earthquake, you want to be at a school,” Cindy Abbott, Measure U Facilities Coordinator, said of the DSA’s stringent safety requirements.

In the interest of meeting those requirements, CUSD has hired two architectural firms, KBZ Architects and Robert Robles Architecture, who specialize in school construction and the particular process of gaining DSA approval.

Plans for each of the campus projects will be submitted to the DSA early in 2017, but work was already completed last summer on several projects that don’t require DSA approval, including a walkway replacement at the high school, completion of a multi-purpose room at Canalino and a new roof on the multi-purpose building at the middle school. DSA approval is also not required for the installation of new fire alarm systems with voice capabilities at each campus, which will take place during summer 2017.

As much work as possible will be completed in the summer months when schools are not in session, but construction during the academic year will be unavoidable over the next five years, continuing into 2021. Orchestrating the construction timeline hinges not only on DSA approval but shifting students across campuses to accommodate construction.

Summerland students, for example, will be moved to Aliso temporarily while their school is built.

Out with the old portables

Measure U will come to the rescue of every campus in CUSD. Replacing the 63 aging portable buildings district-wide with state-of-the-art, Gen 7 modular buildings will be the biggest undertaking of the bond measure. “At the end of the day, we aren’t going to have any portables in this district,” said Director of Facilities and Operations David Weniger.

The modular classrooms will be 90 percent built in an offsite factory, then delivered and installed on new foundations at CUSD campuses. Constructing the new buildings from the ground up would have been more costly and require longer displacement of students. Abbott and Weniger plan to order the modulars in early 2017 and expect to have them arrive for installation about 18 months later.

Portable classrooms are intended as temporary learning spaces, with a limited lifespan. An analysis of CUSD’s portables, many of which were installed 20 to 40 years ago, found most to be in fair to poor condition. The modular classrooms have a 50-year lifespan, on par with custom-built classrooms.

summerland school to be completely rebuilt

“The whole (Summerland) campus has to be rebuilt when those portables come out,” Cindy Abbott told the school board at its meeting on Nov. 8. Due to the slope of the property at Summerland School, which is currently served by a collection of portable classrooms, construction crews will need to anchor the foundations for the new modular classroom buildings into bedrock well below the depth required at other sites.

Trenching to determine the seismic stability of the Summerland campus has been completed, and engineers have deemed the site a suitable home for the school into the future.

“Because of the hillside and the geology, there are tremendous challenges in doing this work,” Abbott told the board.

The Facilities Master Plan, a document created before the bond measure election that outlines the scope and cost of projects to be paid for by Measure U, allocated $2.5 million for Summerland School, but the cost to rebuild the small school is now estimated at $6 million.

On Nov. 8, the school board approved a plan to use funds from the sale of district property on Toro Canyon Road and $830,000 in developer fees to bridge the

funding gap for the Summerland School project. The district has held onto $2.5 million from the sale of Toro Canyon property several years ago.

Abbott said that selling the districtowned property on Whitney Avenue in Summerland would be the preferred option to support the Summerland School project; however, the unimproved property lost most of its value when the Montecito Water District implemented a moratorium on new water meters. When the ban is lifted, the district may sell Whitney to replenish lost Toro sale funds.

Retiring board member Terry Hickey Banks noted that while she understood that Summerland School necessarily requires a greater share of Measure U funds relative to its size than the other campuses in the CUSD due to the extent of the work that needs to be done there, she nevertheless urged her fellow board members to distribute funds evenly to all the schools across the district in the future.

rincon and Foothill to move onto Chs

At the recommendation of facilities staff and consultants, Rincon and Foothill High Schools will relocate to the campus of Carpinteria High School.

Explaining the proposed move to the school board on Nov. 8, architect Robert Robles said, “(The move) will have a positive effect on operational costs.”

The current CHS administrative building will be modernized and installed with two sizable classrooms in order to house Rincon and Foothill alternative schools. Plans for CHS include a new administrative office and student services building to the east of the current location, which will

make a more practical entry point for the school.

Robles noted that his design takes a “soft approach” to forming a perimeter around the future site of Rincon. “We don’t want Carpinteria High School students, or students at Rincon High to look in, or look out, and feel there’s some sort of institutionalization of the student body there, or stigmatizing them in any way,” he said.

Keeping Rincon High in its present location with the upgrades called for in the updated master plan comes with a 23 percent greater cost than moving next door. “It’s a better fit (on the Carpinteria High campus) than the original location to meet all the staff wants for the school,” Robles said.

Barnaby Gloger, principal of both Rincon/Foothill high schools and the Family School, said “The plan that has been presented is one that our staff sees opportunity in. (Moving Rincon/Foothill High) will help us see all of our students as all of our students, district wide—not Carpinteria High, not Rincon, not Foothill, but all of our students here in the Carpinteria district.”

Banks stated, “I have mixed feelings about this. I really do believe we have a great success with our Rincon High School program and a huge part of that is we demonstrate a real value of that program and those students. I want to make sure, and it’s going to be your decision moving forward,” Banks said, gesturing to her fellow board members, “I want to make sure that Rincon and Foothill don’t lose that—that they maintain that identity and staff that is so good with these students, and gives them real opportunity in life.”

Background and the future

After working for CUSD as the Assistant Superintendent from 2002 until her retirement in June of 2016, Abbott was re-hired as the Measure U Facilities Coordinator in November of 2016. Abbott said she began to realize about four years ago that, “We (as a district) were just putting our finger in the dyke—the buildings were so old that it was not a good learning environment.” Working with teachers and staff, Abbott said, “We began evaluating the facilities.”

Starting by simply making a list of everything that needed attention district wide, the process became more and more formalized before being adopted by the school board into the Facilities Master Plan in June 2014, and then brought before Carpinteria voters in November of 2014. The district hired David Weniger in March 2015 as the Director of Facilities and Operations, and Abbott noted “(Weniger) has been key to Measure U because of his extensive experience in school construction planning and oversight,” adding that he is a resident of Carpinteria, and that his children and grandchildren have attended Carpinteria schools.

Looking forward, Abbott said, “It is very exciting for me to be able to help bring all of the projects planned for the next few years to fruition. The community of Carpinteria has shown such tremendous support of its schools and I feel really lucky to be here.” She and Weniger stressed that the facilities staff, as well as the entire educational community in Carpinteria, have been essential to the planning process thus far.

With a detailed plan laid out for the work ahead, Weniger said, “We’re all feeling good about this schedule, but it’s a living document.” Unforeseeable events will likely alter the timeline despite the careful planning that has gone into creating it.

Pool rehab underway

Three weeks of winter maintenance at the Community Pool commenced last week.

The pool will be closed through Jan. 3 while several projects are completed, the largest of which is a pool re-plastering. Other work includes staining the concrete floors in the pool building and replacing locker room furnaces and benches. The new furnaces are energy efficient, and the benches are made from 95 percent recycled plastic and wood content. “City staff is working hard to finish the interior of the pool building and to get the pool filled, heated and treated,” reported manager Tamara Cloud. A grand reopening is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 4.

Banks bids adieu to school board

It could be argued that serving on the board of education wasn’t much of a choice for Terry Hickey Banks. The Hickeys, who have held seats on Carpinteria school boards since the 1800s, seem to have it in their blood. Banks, however, remembers agonizing over whether or not to seek a seat when, in 1995, longtime boardmember Jim Gray was preparing to move out of town. Ultimately, on the advice of Gray and several other community members, Banks pursued the position, and the rest is history—21 years of Carpinteria’s educational history to be exact.

School board seats aren’t for the faint of heart, and Banks proved over and over again to have the right blend of common sense and equanimity to confront the maelstrom of emotional issues facing Carpinteria Unified School District over the last two decades. There was the dissolution of bilingual education, the intense Warrior imagery debate, tough Summerland School decisions, expulsions, bitter negotiations with the teachers union and the unpopular choice to cut ties with most recent Superintendent Micheline Miglis, to name a few.

Closing Main School, however, was the most emotional vote Banks cast in her time on the board. By then, CUSD had suffered nearly a decade of declining enrollment that started in the mid-1990s.

The district was losing about 100 students per year, which amounted to just a handful per grade. “You cannot cut your costs fast enough to make up for the loss of revenue—I hate to say it—that those kids represented,” Banks said. “Most people don’t understand how hard declining enrollment can be on a district, especially year after year after year. You can withstand a couple years of it, but after a decade it’s devastating.”

Community members were outraged by the decision to close Main as a means of staunching the flow of funds. Banks, who had attended local schools herself, said the idea of shuttering Main was terribly difficult for her, too. Nonetheless, keeping it open didn’t make sense for the beleaguered budget. “That’s the thing you have to come to terms with—you’re never going to please everybody,” she said.

Banks has been criticized over the years for fiscal conservatism at the cost of education, but she stands by her methods of keeping her focus on the budget as a means of keeping the district solvent. “The reserves that we have sound huge, but they’re really not,” she said. And while districts across the nation limped through the Great Recession or collapsed under it, CUSD pulled through with mostly balanced budgets.

When Banks took her seat on the board, she had four children in CUSD schools. She brought the parent experience to the governing body, along with a desire to give back ingrained by her late father, Glen Hickey, whose 20-year tenure on the board ended in 1983. “He always impressed on us that volunteerism is an important thing,” said Banks.

In the course of her tenure on the board, Banks awarded each of her four children a Carpinteria High School diploma. She also watched them all graduate from college, and saw two of them go on to get masters degrees and two choose careers in education.

She’s proud of the choices she made on the board, and pleased to see how far CUSD’s educational offerings have come in the last 20 years. “Carpinteria is doing really well academically,” she said. Testing changes in recent years makes it difficult to quantify that progress, but when Banks sits in on scholarship interviews, she gets a sense of what

“It’s amazing to see what these kids are doing,” she said.

Though the economy has improved and declining enrollment landed the district in Basic Aid—a funding model reliant on property taxes rather than a per pupil revenue formula—Banks said that maintaining a strong grip on the budget will be key for future boards.

Basic Aid isn’t a “gravy train” in Carpinteria, Banks said, because the district has such a high proportion of English Learners and socio-economically challenged students—children who need more resources for academic success.

Banks opted not to seek her seat again this fall. She has five grandchildren she wants to be around more, and she said that her “joy” for the school board is gone. The board, Banks said, is in good hands with its three veteran members— Andy Sheaffer, Michelle Robertson and Jaclyn Jacobson. And she hopes that the new board members will take the time to really learn the issues and then set aside the personal to make choices that are best for the district—all the students at CUSD.

Quinoa and poblano peppers CVN

CHEF RANDY RANDY GRAHAM This is an easy and relatively quick dish to make. If the photo looks at all good to you, you’re going to love this combination of slightly-hot Poblano peppers, zesty tomato sauce and the quinoa filling—a very fresh taste.

In addition to taste, this gluten-free dish looks amazing when plated and/ or brought to the table for serving. The recipe makes two good-sized peppers but the recipe can easily be doubled to serve four. I also like using four small peppers (without doubling the recipe) to serve as an appetizer.

Pepper ingredients

One 28-ounce can fire roasted diced tomatoes 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 chipotle pepper (in adobo sauce) 2 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil ½ small red onion, diced ½ small red bell pepper, diced 1 plum tomato, diced 1 cup cooked quinoa 1 teaspoon chili powder 2 large poblano peppers ½ cup jack cheese, shredded 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)

Sauce ingredients

1 large ripe avocado ½ cup Crema Mexicana ½ teaspoon fresh lime juice 2 Tablespoons cilantro, chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper

for another 5 minutes or until the peppers are very soft.

While the peppers finish baking, prepare the avocado sauce. Slice the avocado in half and remove the pit. Scoop the flesh into a food processor and add the crema, lime juice, cilantro and salt and pepper to taste. Blend until smooth. Set aside.

Remove peppers from the oven and garnish with green onions. Serve with avocado sauce on the side.

Process

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.

Add the whole tomatoes, garlic and chipotle to a blender and puree until smooth.

Add to a saucepan and simmer over medium heat until slightly thickened, about 15 minutes.

Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and bell pepper and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the tomato and cook until for another 3 minutes. Stir in the quinoa and chili powder, cover and remove from heat.

Cut lengthwise openings in the Poblano peppers and carefully remove the seeds.

Stuff the peppers with the quinoa mixture.

Ladle about half the tomato sauce into a 9x9-inch baking dish. Place the peppers in the dish and ladle the remaining sauce on top. Sprinkle the peppers with the cheese, cover with foil, and bake for 30 minutes.

Remove the foil from the top and cook

Carp hosts Cage Classic Day One, Dec. 16: Playing in the final game of the first day of the 2016 Jim Bashore Cage Classic at Warrior Gym, the Carpinteria High School boys basketball team held on to beat Hueneme, 53-51. After jumping out to a 43-31 lead by the end of the third quarter, the Warriors needed some clutch free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

“Our guys were not really thinking or fully understanding how that the game should be played down the stretch when we’re actually winning … we’re just going,” explained Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales. “We’ll learn about that, we’ll get better with that; ultimately, the thing we want to do is win the ball game, and we did exactly that,” added Gonzales.

The first half was played at a fast pace with both teams running up and down the court and the Warriors holding a two-point lead at 29-27 going into the break. Carpinteria’s defense then took over in the third, holding the Vikings to just four points. The Warriors were led

by Noah Nuño with 13 points, Terrell Richardson pitched in 10, while Eli Correa and Dominic Sturdivan registered nine and eight respectively.

Day Two, Dec. 17: Once again playing the final game of the day, the Warriors took on their neighbors from just up the freeway, Laguna Blanca of Santa Barbara.

The Carpinteria defense clamped down on the Owls from the start, not allowing the visitors to score until a little over two minutes left in the first, building a 16-2 lead.

Leading 19-3 going into the second, the Warriors continued to apply the pressure.

Laguna Blanca would get as close as 227, but a three-pointer by Mikey Garibay would put the lead at 25-7, thwarting any notion of an Owl comeback. Carpinteria would go on to win 71-31 to start 2-0 in their own tournament. Noah Nuño would once again lead the Warriors in scoring with 19, Eli Correa knocked down 12, while Terrell Richardson and Dominic Sturdivan each had 11.

Day Three, Dec. 18: For the third time in a row in the Classic, the Warriors played the final game of the day, this time against Foothill Tech, a team that handed them their only defeat of the season, 6660, in the Fillmore Tournament earlier this month. With the scored tied at 39 going into the fourth quarter, the Warriors’ hustle and clutch free throws proved to be the difference, as they came away with a 55-49 victory to sweep Pool C for a 3-0 mark in tournament play. “Our guys are learning that we’re going to play harder than anyone, that’s our goal, anyway,” said Carpinteria coach Henry Gonzales.

Day Four, Dec. 19: On the final day of the Classic, Carpinteria played in game five of the six games that afternoon—the number of games that have been going on a regular basis during the four days of the tournament. The Warriors took on Atascadero, the second place finisher in Pool A. The Greyhounds would present a huge challenge with six-foot, six-inch senior Elijah Cooks and six-foot, eightinch junior Kyler Warren on the squad against a relatively smaller Carpinteria team. And, in the end, it would be Atascadero winning the third-place game, by a score of 58-37.

December 16 - The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team dropped a game to San Marcos by a score of 42-35. Seniors Tori Kelley and Monique Sanchez had eight and five points respectively, while their senior teammate Harmony Reed knocked down 13 and grabbed 12 rebounds. “Tonight in our matchup against San Marcos, we didn’t come out as ourselves and went into the locker room down 14 at half,” explained Warriors coach Amy Bryant. “Our biggest problems tonight were our fundamentals; we had too many turnovers, had difficulty finishing our layups, and were only seven of 22 from the free-throw line,” added Bryant. December 15 - The Cate School boys soccer team lost for the second time this season, falling 3-1 to Dunn School on Cate Mesa. The Earwigs scored in the 10th minute on a shot from outside the penalty box, and again in the 20th minute when a Dunn forward turned the corner on the end line for the goal. The Earwigs finished off their scoring in the 38th minute on a goal from the top of the box. In the 78th minute of play, senior Juan magalhaes received the ball in stride from sophomore Jack Deardorff, moving towards the Dunn net. From there, Magalhaes placed a shot in the far corner to make it 3-1. Goalkeeper Cullen barber recorded eight saves on the day, and the Dunn keeper collected five of his own. “Being without our starting midfielder, sophomore bailor Jalloh, effected our ability to create much of an attack from the opening whistle, but we also didn’t play with enough urgency to start the game,” said Cate coach Pete Mack.

December 14 - The Cate School boys basketball team had all players score in a 65-22 win against Laguna Blanca. marko Pliso scored 31 points as the Rams got the fast break going early. “Laguna Blanca is going to be a good team, they have a talented group of young players,” said Cate coach Andy Gil. “Our two freshman for Cate, Khadim Pouye and thomas nettesheim, contributed good energy on defense,” added Gil.

Lexi Persoon recently competed in the Winter Age Group, the Southern California Championships where thousands of swimmers compete, held at UCSB. She swam her 100 breaststroke in 1:17.66, but wasn’t happy with her time, reported Coach Morgan Youngs. The determined and focused young athlete worked with Youngs on her turns, and two days later she shaved 4 seconds off her time in the 200 breast, finishing in 2:41.66. “It was a very satisfying accomplishment for Lexi as she accomplished her goal of making it to WAG and dropping time,” said Youngs.

Local swimmers zip through Coastal Meet

In early December, 13 members of the Carpinteria Aquatics Club swim team competed at the CSSC Coastal Swim Meet at Rancho Simi Park Community Pool. Noah Morente, Allison Banks and Dillian Scoot competed at their first ever USA Swimming competition. “It was very compelling to watch these three excel in competition and overcome fears and anxiety,” reported coach Morgan Youngs.

The team’s veteran swimmers also performed well, Youngs said. Caleb Classen swam an impressive 1:04.75 in the 100 fly. His sister Taylor Classen improved her 100 breaststroke by nearly 7 seconds with a time of 1:42.28. Nathan Endow also reduced time on his 100 free, and Sydney Endow beat her own 100 breast time. “Augie Sheaffer had an all around huge meet for himself,” Youngs said. His best swim was a 200 free in 2:24.49. Olivia Sheaffer swam in her first ever 200 back, and Eli Sheaffer dropped 5 seconds off his 100 back. Ian Thomas dropped 17 seconds drop in his 100 breast.

Matthew Endow and Lexi Persoon had a “huge meet,” Youngs said, and qualified for the Winter Age Group Championships at UCSB. Matthew qualified in the 100 back with time of 1:26.95 and would have qualified in the 50 breast if Youngs hadn’t made a mistake.

Three more Rams earn football CIF Honors

In addition to the student-athletes that CVN listed last week, Cate School seniors Pierce Lundt and Ryder Dinning, along with junior Chris Bennett, earned First Team All-CIF honors in Eight-Man League Football. Henry Dawson, Ryder Dinning and Pierce Lundt are also eligible to play in the Eight-Man All Star Game, which will be played on June 24, 2017 at Flintridge.

Holiday gifts nobody wants but everybody treasures CVN

a tRaiNeR’s jouRNal Rob buRke For me, the holidays always represent a period mixed with reflection and somber optimism. It’s a time when the stresses in life test the endurance of the traditional nuclear family as well as the family units formed by close friends, coworkers and significant others. It’s fond memories or the curiosity of children, like when at the age of four, I asked my mom why she had her hand up the turkey’s butt. Her response was awkward at best.

“Well, if we want to eat him, then we have to clean him and stuff him,” she said.

“Does he like it?” I asked.

This is when parenting becomes an art form: “Well, I don’t think so because he’s dead,” she replied with a sorrowful look.

I ran out of the kitchen screaming. I did not eat the turkey that night.

Then there was the year when the ridiculous amount of food was too heavy for the table. The table creaked and shook until it collapsed from the center just as the carving knife applied the slightest pressure to the bird. My mom didn’t know if she should laugh or cry. But it was the best Christmas dinner because we were there as a family, spoons in hand, eating from the collapsed table.

Fast forward to the year 2000. I was visiting the Bay Area from Los Angeles. I had come home to help my mom lose a doctor-ordered 100 pounds. She needed knee replacement surgery, and the surgeons would not consider her a viable candidate at her weight. Within two months, I was able to change her diet and exercised with her every day.

She lost 50 pounds, and the doctors said that good enough for them, the surgery is on. She cried with glee. This is the best Thanksgiving ever, she said from behind tears of joy.

A week later, my mom and I were getting ready to buy Thanksgiving dinner at the local market. Five minutes after exiting the shower, my mom fell. I happened to be in her bedroom so I immediately jumped over the bed to her aid. She was limp. She couldn’t support her weight on her feet. At the time, I was a bodybuilder, which provided the strength to lift her and carry her to her bed.

“Mom, what happened?” I asked while trying to remain calm.

“I don’t know,” she replied. “I think my legs are tired from our long walk today.”

I left her on her bed to rest and checked with her an hour later. She said she was

nauseous. Knowing that this was a key symptom to stroke, I called 911 and she was admitted to the hospital in less than 30 minutes. My sister, brother, their spouses, their children were all at my mom’s bedside. She struggled to speak and that’s when it hit me—I am responsible because I didn’t get her to the hospital quickly enough. If I had, they would have been able to treat her and lessen the severity of the stroke symptoms. I stared into my mom’s eyes with tears streaming from mine and begged her to forgive me. My sister hugged me and told me it wasn’t my fault. My brother and almost every nurse joined the chorus of tears insisting that I’d done the right thing.

One week later, my mom was discharged into a skilled nursing facility, or a SNUF, where I visited four times a day to help the overworked nurses. After I had made the house fully accessible to wheelchairs, I moved my mom back home.

My mom continued to have strokes until she was unable to communicate—to anyone but me. She and I formed our own language.

Nightly, I would lay in bed listening to my mom breathe. She would struggle and I would always awaken wondering if this was the day.

Then that day came. I knew that something wasn’t right. I took her into the hospital and they confirmed that she had a fungal infection in her blood.

Since she couldn’t breathe very well on her own, she was always kept at an incline, until one day when I showed up to visit and she was flat in her bed and blue. I pulled the emergency string and they were able to resuscitate her, but she was not conscious. She stayed in a coma for two weeks. The day was Jan. 10 when she opened her eyes and looked around the room and spoke clearly.

“Tom and Herb are here.” Tom and Herb were her brothers who had passed a few years prior.

“Where mom?” I asked. She pointed to the foot of her bed, beyond the Christmas presents that were still unwrapped.

“It’s time, mom. You can let go,” I whispered into her ear.

She took one last deep breath and that was it.

As difficult as those three years were, it was the most amazing gift—no wrapping needed. I learned more from my mom by spending endless hours conversing in our self-made language. The entire experience was priceless and gave me a new insight into the meaning of the holidays.

Was it the ex?

On Nov. 30 at approximately 3:30 p.m. a deputy responded to a mobile home park on Via Real to take a report about vandalism to a vehicle that had occurred on Nov. 24. The reporting party stated she had parked her vehicle in front of a market on Carpinteria Avenue at about 6:30 p.m., and had Thanksgiving dinner at a friend’s house nearby. Her friend told the woman that her ex-boyfriend had been there but left quickly after “taking some alcohol,” the deputy wrote. The ex-boyfriend had damaged the woman’s tires in the past, so she went out to check on her vehicle but didn’t see anything amiss. The following morning at approximately 7 a.m. the woman’s mother told her that there was damage all over the exterior of her vehicle. The deputy observed various scratches on the driver’s side front and rear doors, the trunk and the passenger side rear door, and took digital photos for evidence. A local repair shop had given the woman a $1,400 estimate for repainting her car. The owner of the market said he would provide deputies footage from his security cameras when it was available.

Dirty diapers

On Dec. 4 at approximately 2:30 p.m. a deputy responded to a report of a transient trespassing on the site of a senior living facility under construction on Carpinteria Avenue. The executive director of the facility met the deputy and said that a “local transient in a wheelchair” had been leaving soiled diapers and other trash on the property. The director said that she had told the man numerous times to leave the property and not return. When she saw him that afternoon, the man was changing his medical equipment in the parking lot and she wanted to file charges against him for trespassing. The deputy spoke to the 54-year-old man about the trespassing, and the man said that he believed he was allowed to be on the property due to there not being a gate to keep him out. “It should be noted,” the deputy wrote, “(name withheld) has

had several stay-away orders from local businesses due to complaints of trespassing.” The director signed a citizen’s arrest against the man, and the deputy cited him for trespassing and explained that he was not to return to the property. The man said he understood and would not return.

Window shopping

On Dec. 7 at approximately 9 a.m. a deputy responded to call about vandalism to the front window of a bike shop on Carpinteria Avenue. When the owner of the bike shop had come to work that morning, he saw the west window of his shop-front had been shattered. The owner did not have suspect information, but thought the window had been broken by a BB or pellet gun because there was a small hole in the center of the shatter pattern. The deputy was unable to recover a BB or pellet. The shop owner wanted a report made for insurance purposes and estimated the window would cost $800 to replace.

Beach access

On Dec. 12 at approximately 12:30 p.m. a deputy was dispatched to the beach near the Casitas pier in response to a call for help. A 59-year-old man had called Sheriff’s dispatch and said that he had been drinking and needed help getting off the beach. The deputy walked down the footpath to the east of the pier and found the man on the beach. “A strong odor of alcoholic beverages” was coming from the man, the deputy noted. He also noted that the man’s “balance was unsteady and he smelled like he had urinated on his pants.” Because the man was unable to get himself off the beach and appeared to be heavily intoxicated and unable to care for himself, the deputy arrested him for public intoxication.

Mammoth proportions cVn

unpredictable wilderness chuck graham Back in September 2014, Peter Larramendy, a biologist for the California Institute for Environmental Studies, was conducting a stream survey on Santa Rosa Island. He was covering the overall hydrology of the windswept islet including streams, standing water and flow, when something entirely different caught his eye.

“I knew this particular canyon was a hot spot,” he said. “I went into the survey with the manifestation that we will find something interesting.”

What Larramendy happened upon was the tip of an ancient mammoth tusk sticking out of a parched creekbed in crumbling shale.

“I looked to the left of the canyon wall,” recalled Larramendy. “It didn’t look normal. There was the curvature of a tusk.”

Larramendy took GPS coordinates and pictures and reported his find to the Channel Islands National Park (NPS).

However, the national park didn’t have the funds at the time to excavate and had to wait two years to finally dig it out. They waited, hoping there wouldn’t be any substantial rain or erosion as the perpetual California drought lagged on.

“It’s a major project and expense to conduct such an excavation,” said retired park service archeologist Don Morris, who volunteered on the dig. “This is easily the most complete mammoth skull coming from the islands.”

Never gets old

I’m losing count on how many circumnavigations I’ve done around the islands, but this last one I won’t forget any time soon. Last September, on the way out to Santa Rosa Island there was an NPS archeologist on the Island Packers ferry.

The word was he was onboard to dig up the most recent mammoth discovery, but its whereabouts were being kept under wraps.

After paddling around the backside of Santa Rosa, myself, Craig Fernandez and Danny Trudeau, took advantage of relatively mild conditions, crossed the San Miguel Passage and circumnavigated San Miguel Island, something I hadn’t done since 1999.

The island was once again open to the public after two years, as the U.S. Navy had shut it down in May 2014 due to live ordinance concerns. After reaching Crook Point we crossed back over the passage in a steady northwest wind and southeast current; the return paddle to Santa Rosa was tedious to say the least.

We camped on a little patch of sand where the high tide that evening washed beneath our kayaks and lapped just a few feet from my tent. The next morning we kayaked down the north side of the island and stopped at a particular canyon with a reliable water source. The drought, however, had left the freshwater marsh void of any water. It was the first time I’d ever seen it empty, replaced by cracked mud and limp, brown reeds.

Kayakers emerge from a sheltered cove on Santa Rosa Island. to fill a couple of our water bottles. Above the spring is a significant archeological and anthropological site. In 1959, Dr. Phil Orr discovered two femurs belonging to a man in an eroding bluff, the oldest human remains in North America dated at 13,200 years old.

We continued hiking up the canyon looking for more water. About another half mile up I spotted a shower at the edge of the bluff above us. Then we ran into caution tape, and saw someone sticking his head out of a deep hole dug in the chalky shale. Another 10 seconds passed before I realized what we had walked into. Then I saw the archeologist from the ferry.

“I take it this is the mammoth site,” I said sarcastically.

“Yeah, you can’t be here,” said the archeologist.

“Fair enough,” I said. “We’re out of here.”

With that, we headed back down the canyon to our gear-laden kayaks. I couldn’t help but wonder though about the proximity of the oldest human remains in North America and the most recent mammoth discovery.

Farther down the island we paddled into a tranquil cove, one without a name, but like no other on the entire island.

There was no beach, no cobble or sand between the toes. The entire cove was fortified by nearly impenetrable eelgrass.

Instead of a berm of cobble and gnarled giant bladder kelp, it looked like huge bales of eelgrass. I landed my kayak while Craig and Danny stayed in theirs.

I clambered over squishy piles of shoulder-high eelgrass; clinging to it were hundreds of pelagic red crabs who had survived a long journey from southerly waters. There was a creek gurgling down into the eelgrass, and leaning against the face of an eroding bluff was a massive mammoth leg bone nearly shoulder-high on me and I’m 6-feet-tall—a Columbian mammoth maybe?

Dwarfism

Columbian mammoths, 13-feet-tall at the shoulder and weighing in at 22 tons, first arrived in North America 100,000 years ago and the first ones reached the

Channel Islands when it was one mega island, roughly 80,000 years ago. Scientists named the ancient island Santa Rosae, and as the channel was only 4 to 5 miles across back then, the shaggy herbivores, with their built-in snorkels, could have easily made the swim to the mountainous island.

The polar icecaps began to melt approximately 20,000 years ago, marking the beginning of the end of the Ice Age. Sea levels began to rise, and that is how the Northern Channel Islands were formed where Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa and San Miguel are today.

At that point, the mammoths experienced something called dwarfism, where a long period of isolation and dwindling food sources force the massive herbivores to evolve into a pygmy species. Creatures that once stood 13-feet at the shoulder had now shrunk to 4- to 6-feet at the shoulder. Pygmy mammoths were the largest land mammal to roam the volcanic archipelago that is now also known as “the Galapagos Islands of the north.”

There is a lot of speculation, though, swirling around this particular mammoth find. For one, it’s been determined that it’s not a pygmy—that it’s either a Columbian that was evolving into a pygmy, or a juvenile Columbian.

“The cranial is very fragile,” continued Morris, who worked for the park service for 16 years. “There’s only one other skull like it, which was discovered in Los Angeles.”

What has been determined is the mammoth’s age. The proof was buried in the ground above and below where the skull and tusks were found: radio-carbon dates the layers of dirt surrounding the skull to be roughly the same age as the oldest human remains in North America.

What hasn’t been determined yet is how this mammoth died. Environmental impacts could’ve come into play, or human influences. Was it the man who lived in or near this remote canyon who might have killed this mammoth? For a few thousand years before their extinction, mammoths and the first humans coexisted.

“It is possible,” said Morris. “Although there’s never been a credible kill site discovered on the islands.”

Michael McDonald and wife Amy Holland perform a sold out show on Dec. 17 at Plaza Playhouse Theater. Benefiting the theater, the concert featured holiday favorites, McDonald’s hits and Holland’s original music. McDonald talked to the audience about how historic theaters like the Plaza Playhouse are disappearing from the country, and once gone, they will never come back. He spoke of his great appreciation for the theater and encouraged everyone to lend their support.

Above, the Peña family of Carpinteria celebrates Our Lady of Guadalupe Day on Dec. 12 with its first of many stops. The group gathered at El Carro Park, rode to Dahlia Court for a feast and live music, then saddled up again and rode to Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church to attend the Our Lady of Guadalupe mass.

At right, after a victory over Foothill Tech on the night of Dec. 19, the Carpinteria High School basketball team and cheerleaders celebrated sports photographer Bill Swing’s birthday with a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday,” a cake and gift. Swing, whose volunteer photography gig has him donating hundreds of hours of shooting CHS and Cate sports events each year, said that the surprise gesture was the best gift he could imagine. “I’d really like to express my thanks to the players and the cheerleaders and to Julie Shamblin for the organizing,” said Swing.

Andrew Millhollin and Lizette Perez welcomed daughter Sienna Harley Millhollin on Sept. 27. Sienna weighed 6 pounds 12 ounces and measured 19 inches long. She joins big sister Zoey, who introduced her to Santa last week. Proud grandparents are Romero Perez and Letty Pelayo of Los Angeles, and Keith and Suzie Millhollin of Carpinteria.
