Planning Commission approves trail easement acquisition

On Dec. 3, the Planning Commission voted unanimously to support the City of Carpinteria’s acquisition of a trail easement through the property leased by S&S Seeds at 6155 Carpinteria Ave. The easement will allow for the construction of an important missing link in the Carpinteria Coastal Vista Trail, which will ultimately extend from Rincon County Park to Carpinteria City Beach. A Habitat Conservation Fund Grant will cover half of the $300,000 cost to acquire the 9,525 square foot easement that runs along the southern edge of the blufftop property and a portion of the eastern edge. The new trail section remains to be designed and approved, and is at least a year away from construction. It will connect with the existing trail through the Bluffs Nature Preserve to the west and with the undeveloped property to the east of the S&S Seeds building.

Decommissioning begins for Carpinteria Oil and Gas Processing Facility

Work on removing inactive and unnecessary above-ground equipment from the Carpinteria Oil and Gas Processing Facility will begin this month. All proper safety precautions will be taken in conjunction with these activities, according to the City.

Curtis Studio presents Tchaikovsky with a twist The Nutcracker will have two principal dancers

BY DEBRA HERRICK Lately, Curtis Studio of Dance is a flurry of children, mice, royals and dolls, as the studio prepares for its annual performance of Tchaikovsky’s timeless holiday classic, The Nutcracker. Studio owner Bonnie Curtis usually selects one prima ballerina for the principal role of Clara. However, this year Curtis has chosen two girls to dance in twin lead roles, requiring Curtis to completely rechoreograph the part. Thirteen-year-olds Hayley Raunsbak and Kate Isaac have been students at Curtis Studio of Dance since they were three. They have performed the Nutcracker each year, beginning as preschool mice, then snow princesses, candy canes, Russians, Ponchinelles, angels and then leaders in each dance.

“Both girls would come for their rehearsals on Saturdays early and stay the whole day watching the other rehearsals or taking the place of an absent dancer whenever necessary,” said Curtis. “So this summer when I was planning who might dance the role of Clara, I realized that they both were ready. I decided to have Kate be Clara, as she was growing

so fast, and I was thinking that the next year it would be Hayley. Then they came back from summer break and Hayley was taller than Kate—the following week Kate was taller than Hayley! That did it. I committed to having twins ‘Isabella and Victoria’—names that were on the list of favorite names in the 1800s.”

Raunsbak and Isaak dance 16 hours a week, said Curtis. They are members of the studio’s competition corps and excel academically at school. “We are very proud of Hayley and Kate taking on a brand-new way to present The Nutcracker ballet,” Curtis said.

Kelsey (Drain) Bender, Carpinteria High School Class of 2012, is the recipient of the Sanford Teacher Award for 2018 for the state of Idaho, where she teaches at Blackfoot High School in Blackfoot. The prestigious award is bestowed upon one nominee per state and includes a $10,000 prize that can be used in any way the teacher feels will benefit the classroom.

After graduating from CHS’s FFA program, Bender received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from University of California, Davis and is now in her second year of teaching agricultural sciences at Blackfoot. Bender’s achievements in teaching include pioneering an innovative floral design program in which students create and sell floral arrangement subscriptions to the community, serving as Blackfoot’s FFA advisor and soccer and track & field coach.

Bender credits her many wonderful teachers at CHS for inspiring her to pursue ag education, according to her mother Kim Drain of Carpinteria.

School Board votes on surplus property and bi-lingual education at Aliso Elementary

At its Nov. 27 meeting, the Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees heard reports on state-wide test results and voted 3-1 in favor of selling the properties at Bailard Avenue, with board members Rogelio Delgado opposing and Maureen Foley abstaining. A vote on the Whitney property in Summerland has been delayed to provide the community more time to study the proposed sale.

CaasPP results discussed

Across Carpinteria and the rest of the state, students performed significantly worse on last year’s California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) test. Results from both Carpinteria High School and Carpinteria Middle School, showed that English learners fared worse than their Englishspeaking classmates.

CHS principal Gerardo Cornejo presented data to the board on the demographics of the 611 students attending the high school, broken down by ethnicity: 72 percent Latino, 24 percent white, 2 percent Asian and .6 percent multi-ethnic.

Cornejo added that 60 percent of the student body were classified as economically disadvantaged. “Last year was a unique year,” the principal said of the 20-days of instruction lost due to the Thomas Fire and debris flows of Jan. 9, 2018. That is “not an excuse,” he said, “but it does take a while to come back.” Cornejo also pointed out that the natural disasters cancelled a lot of test practice time.

The issue of how to best track student progress was discussed, as the CAASPP test for high schoolers is only administered in the 11th grade. CHS has purchased new software to help administrators follow student performance.

Currently, the CHS graduation rate is 96 percent. Offering some perspective on the CAASSP results, Cornejo said “This reflects how the students did in one week of the school year.” He added that “Students do very well on AP exams because they matter… this test unfortunately does not hinder whether they graduate or not, it does not affect their grades—it’s just hoping that students take their time and

do their best taking this test.”

Carpinteria Middle School Principal Lisa O’Shea reported that only 24.7 percent of sixth graders, 31.9 percent of seventh graders and 40.4 percent of eighth graders met or exceeded the CAASPP standards. English learners at CMS cumulatively had only 7 percent of sixth graders, 12.3 percent of seventh graders and 5.7 percent of eighth graders that met or exceeded expectations. Board member Maureen Foley expressed her concerns, stating “The achievement gap in the subcategories is really tragic.”

Aliso Elementary School Principal Dr. Michele Fox, with staff members Brett Weiberg, Mary Lewandowski, Gretchen Tofflemire, Susan Fredrickson and Claudia Juarez presented the results of research they have conducted over the past year into the form of bi-lingual education they would like to implement at the school. Underscoring the achievement gap between English learners and English-speaking students, the Aliso team explained the reasoning behind their proposed adoption of the FLES model (Foreign Language in Elementary Schools) of bi-lingual education. Based on parent feedback, most of which came from those with a Spanish-speaking background, the Aliso instructors said their school community wanted bi-lingual instruction across the whole school as opposed to a separate program like the two Dual Language Immersion classes at Canalino Elementary. Aliso parents also want the majority of instruction to be conducted in English.

The upshot of the FLES model is that all Aliso students will receive 20 minutes of instruction in Spanish, four days a week. Teacher Brett Weiberg said, “Research shows that students are not only able to learn the language, but are also highly engaged in learning the content through the language. The Aliso team also pointed out that the FLES model will provide students a pathway to earn the California State Seal of Bi-literacy on their high school diploma.

The pilot program will begin in February, 2019. Board member Foley expressed concern that the FLES program at Aliso was not properly posted on the board meeting agenda—a possible violation of the Brown Act. CUSD Superintendent Diana Rigby replied to Foley’s concern by stating: “There are two considerations— we are not taking any action, so it’s not a violation of the Brown Act, and number two, this model is part of [Aliso’s] Single Plan for Student Achievement.”

Foley then stated, “We do the community a disservice by sneaking this through.” “ We ’ re n o t s n e a k i n g a n y t h i n g through,” Rigby replied. “The way Aliso has chosen to address the achievement gap is through this program.” Foley recused herself from voting on the FLES pilot program over her concern about a possible Brown Act violation, while the remaining board members voted in favor of implementation.

The CUSD Real Property Advisory Committee recommended the sale of the properties at Bailard Avenue, and the district’s attorney Craig Price said to the School Board: “You’re deciding, as far as the board is concerned, based on the recommendation of your district Advisory Committee, you believe the property is surplus and that the process for selling the property should commence.”

Giti White of Carpinteria addressed the Board and asked “Why now? Has the School Board looked to future school

sites in regard to sea level rise?” White also mentioned the prohibitive cost of land in the area should the district need additional school sites in the future.

School garden coordinator Genevieve Schwanbeck sent a letter to the board which was read aloud, and brought up the possibility of the organic farm on one of the Bailard properties helping to not only provide healthy, locally-grown produce to students, but also possibly offset the cost of the district’s meal programs.

Board member Andy Sheaffer made a motion to adopt the recommendation of the Advisory Committee, but board member Rogelio Delgado said that insufficient time has been given to residents near the properties in question to voice their concerns: “The district needs to know what the community wants or doesn’t want at that site,” adding, “it’s a giveaway at its current price.” Nevertheless, board members Robertson, Fabre and Sheaffer voted in favor of the recommendation to sell, while Delgado voted against and Foley again abstained due to her membership in the Bailard family and the possible appearance of impropriety.

The meeting adjourned soon after, but not before Delgado expressed concern at the lack of transparency in the district’s expenditures, particularly in regard to legal fees. “Transparency, transparency, transparency. I have not seen it. That’s what I want the district to provide me with. If I don’t know, the community doesn’t know (how much is being spent).” Outgoing board members, Robertson and Fabre spoke positively of their time serving on the CUSD School Board, and Andy Sheaffer thanked them for their service.

Kindling seasonal warmth Cvn

the summerland shore f r a n d av i s The holiday bustle seems to arrive earlier every year. It gathers steam in October, puffs out its cheeks in November and bursts into full holiday mode in December. Another Christmas comes trundling in laden with so much commercial baggage it feels like a cliché. While it may look like the same old same old, it’s not.

Every year holiday genies manage to push a magical reset button so that the old familiar Christmas, the one from our childhoods, emerges newly polished, bright as ever, its welcome familiarity shining sweeter and brighter in troubled times.

I confess to harboring grinchy feelings these days. My antidote is listening to KUSC, the classical music station. It helps to overcome the soul-drenching sadness brought on by so many tragedies near and far.

Chopin’s Polonaise can put a temporary mute on the clamorous din of things breaking up—towns burned, lives lost to fire and gunfire, starvation in the Middle East, our country’s downward slide into feuding factions and incivility.

I also choose schlocky holiday movies in preference to the news, which I get quite enough of from NPR, phone alerts

and the LA Times. Escaping into innocent times and simple stories featuring sparkling evergreens and snow-covered villages is a release. Sometimes even instructive. In a recent Netflix movie starring Kurt Russell as a beleaguered Santa, he stated, “People need Christmas to remind them to be kind.”

Right on, Santa, I thought. We are a generous people, and Christmas always does a good job of plumping up our kindness gene. Here in California, located as we are at the nexus between the happy season and an awareness of profound losses, acts of kindness are sorely needed.

I’m thinking here of the Camp Fire and families lodged in high school gymnasiums and rain-soaked tents in Walmart parking lots. (Go online to see which relief organizations are receiving donations.

Google also has a good donation site.)

This year the happy season arrives just in time, breaking through chaos to remind us who we are, where we came from and why we celebrate. We Americans are such a mixed group, but there is unity in sharing, and we share a great deal. Not everyone is a Christian, but Christmas, and our multiple interpretations of it, is a shared occasion.

You’d have to be a hermit to miss the speeding joy wagon. Who can resist the sudden abundance of store shelves overflowing with special treats, the smiles all around? Add to that the big jolly Santa character, twinkling lights and pine trees, wrapped gifts, carols and excited kids.

Excited kids most of all.

It’s a season especially tailored for kids, and all of us are along for the ride.

The innocence of children, their belief in the rightness of a Santa Claus bringing gifts to every single person inspires us to expand into the vacant space of our better selves. Our hearts grow a little bit.

We smile more. We are both more giving and forgiving.

SCA meetings and parties

The Summerland Citizens Association will have an annual membership meeting at 7 p.m. on Dec. 12 to elect board directors and learn the results of resident John Heil’s Summerland survey. For several months, Heil conducted surveys of residents, business owners and tourists

to capture a picture of Summerland and lay out suggestions for a long-range plan for the town’s future.

The SCA will throw its annual holiday party on Thursday, Dec. 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Summerland Winery. Everyone welcome. Ten dollars gets a slice of pizza and a glass of wine.

One good thing: The mood turnaround you get smelling the high mountain tang of pine in the Boy Scout Christmas tree lot.

Blending art, community and love for the land CVn

mission possible barbara dunlap When Arturo tello came to Carpinteria in 1979 he was an avid long-distance runner covering miles a day in the foothills and on the bluffs. He fell in love with the land and the community, and for four decades he has expanded this passion as a landscape artist, songwriter and environmental activist.

Here’s a closer look at tello and his years in Carpinteria: When you arrived here, you were a runner, but you became a landscape painter.

How did that happen?

I was a painter and focused on the figure. I imagined myself being a Velazquez.

But through running, I was loving nature and open spaces. I slowly switched to putting all my energy into painting. I developed the idea of painting landscapes as half an art and half a sport. I began to get a high from standing and looking at nature instead of sweating and running.

landscape. What kinds of activities does the Oak Group do?

In the beginning, we were friends and lovers of the landscape. At the time, being a landscape painter wasn’t popular—it was seen as being behind the times—but we were painting what we loved.

Around that time, there was a huge famine in Africa, and musicians were doing benefit concerts called Band Aid. The idea of using art to benefit a cause was in the air. Also, there was concern that our open spaces were on a track toward development.

Lois Seidenberg, founder of the Carpinteria Valley Association (CVA), invited us to do an art reception, which is where I met CVA board member ted rhodes. Half the funds from that event went to raising awareness of the bluffs. We did several shows, partnering with environmental groups that wanted to save open space in Santa Barbara and Carpinteria. We also partnered with the nature Conservancy, which was the steward of Santa Cruz Island. All in all, the oak Group has helped raise over $3 million in 32 years.

You also became very involved with CVA and then Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs. How did that occur?

Lois became my friend and mentor, and she invited me to be part of CVA. I began going to city council and planning commission meetings. I fell in love with the idea that people in the community could have a say about what happens.

I thought that was important. I went to every meeting and spoke. Painting is one thing, but having a voice and making a difference in the reality of a community is very powerful.

In the early 1990s, I became president of CVA, which was fighting development but not acquiring land. When Chevron sold its part of the bluffs to a new developer, that land had a history of 20-plus years of opposition to development. The new developer said, “If you don’t want to develop, buy the land from us.” The idea had been there, but now there was a willing seller. That was the beginning of Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs. Led by Dorothy Campbell and then Ted Rhodes,

You became president of Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs in 2016, and you’ve served as president during the second purchase of bluffs land. What is your role now?

I’m still president, and I’m also on the City Bluffs Advisory Board. We’re now kind of eyes on, hands on. That’s my formal involvement.

My other involvement is being on the bluffs and loving it. Landscape painting is a kind of ritual. You are concentrating on the land and consecrating it.

How do your many activities come together?

I have artist friends, musician friends and friends through my environmental work. I’ve been really blessed. How lucky can you get?

CarpHeart honors Thomas Fire anniversary

At sunset on Tuesday, Dec. 4, volunteers lit up the CarpHeart at the top of Franklin Trail to mark a year since the Thomas Fire began. The CarpHeart was designed by Beth Cox. “I went up on the trail for the first time after Thomas around Jan. 3 and was so in awe of the destruction and even more in awe of how much the firefighters saved and prevented,” said Cox. “We were going to put it up the week of the Montecito mud slide, as a signal of strength and solidarity. Obviously, that couldn’t happen, so we postponed it to Valentine’s Day, when it felt like we had all somewhat awakened from the trauma of everything. The outpour of positivity it received was so amazing, that I thought it only apropos to put it up on the anniversary of the Thomas Fire, Dec. 4.” For Cox, the CarpHeart commemorates the strength and support the community showed in overcoming hardships related to the Thomas Fire. “It is hard to believe it was a year ago that all of our lives were affected in so many ways,” Cox said.

Danish gnomes bring holiday cheer PhOTOS By DeBrA herrICK

Holiday shoppers filled the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center courtyard for the Artists Marketplace on Dec. 1.

Local artisans offered an eclectic array of handcrafted gifts for sale, along with coffee, music and art activities. Among the gifts available, were julenisse, Danish Christmas gnomes by Karin Petersen, a native of Denmark. In Scandinavian tradition, julenisse bring good fortune, sometimes even helping Santa build and deliver his gifts (kind of like elves).

BY ALONZO OROZCO First year coach Corey Adam and the Carpinteria High School boys basketball team traveled to Santa Barbara to take on rival Bishop Diego on Saturday, Dec. 1, for their first road game of the season.

The Warriors battled till the very end but fell short by a score of 57-52. The Cardinals now stand at 2-1, while Carpinteria dropped to 0-3.

The visitors got off to a slow start, missing some good opportunities around the basket. As a result, Bishop jumped out to a 13-3 lead after Connor Streett drilled his second of two first quarter three-pointers with around three minutes left. “We had a real sluggish start offensively—defensively, probably our worst game of the three games,” said Adam. The Warriors were without their leading scorer on the season, Ian Reed, who was in the school play that night. But the team got a boost from Ali Hamadi who missed the last game.

Hamadi tallied nine points and grabbed seven rebounds on the night, and Carpinteria escaped the first quarter, trailing just 17-10.

The home team once again jumped out to a 10-point lead, but the Warriors converted on four of six free throws to cut the margin to 20-14. However, their inconsistency at the free throw line hurt them in the long run, as they made just 16 of 33 free throws for the game—under 50 percent. “We shoot 70 percent, we win by three,” explained Adam. Even with their poor shooting, the Warriors pulled to within five points, 28-23 by halftime.

Warriors keep battling

As the third quarter unfolded a short jumper in the lane by Myles Morgan reduced the lead to 38-34. Myles led all Carpinteria scorers with 17, but a trey by the Cardinals’ Kai Morphy with 1:46 left, gave his team a 43-34 lead, which they carried into the fourth quarter. Morphy was the top scorer, with 18 for the game.

A free throw in the fourth quarter by the Warriors’ Caleb Nangle knocked the lead down to five, but a pair of buckets by the Cardinals’ Jake Koeper and a layin by Morphy put the lead up to 11 with under three minutes left. Nevertheless, Carpinteria was good for one more run and with three straight steals—the third

by Chris Ramirez that led to a converted free throw by Morgan—the deficit was down to 54-50 with under 30 seconds to play. But Morphy’s three foul shots at the end sealed the victory for Bishop Diego.

“The fourth quarter, the energy was there, we just couldn’t make a shot,” said Adam. The surge was led by Ramirez, who finished with six steals, five points, five assists and four rebounds before fouling out late in the game. The Warriors came in averaging 27 turnovers per game, but only committed seven on the night. “I’m proud of the guys, they keep fighting, they’re not hanging their head,” he added.

November 28 - The Cate School girls basketball team beat Thacher, 49-35. “Despite foul trouble, sophomore Lily Zanze excelled, playing both the guard and post positions tallying 14 points including six of seven from the free throw line,” said Rams assistant coach Laura Moore. Senior Elle Smith scored seven of her 11 total points in the third quarter. Freshman Meena Baher had four steals and contributed 11 points.

Sophomore Deborah Brittain pulled down eight rebounds and put up four points, while junior Piper Brooks contributed three points. Senior guard Sarah Polowczak had three steals and six points. “Junior Millie Todd provided much needed leadership and unselfishness during critical moments throughout the game,” said Moore.

November 30 - The Cate School (Division Five-A) boys basketball team traveled to Los Angeles to visit Pilibos High School (Division Four-AA) in an early season non-league matchup, which the Rams lost by a score of 54-36. Khadim Pouye led Cate’s scoring with 12 points. “I credit freshman Mason Oetgen’s defense in his first varsity basketball game for Cate,” said Rams coach Andy Gil. Cate trailed 25-10 at the half. “This was a good early game for us to improve and allows us to recognize our weaknesses—we need to do a better job of taking care of the ball,” added Gil. December 4 - The Cate School boys basketball team hosted Carpinteria in a crosstown early season matchup at Sprague Gymnasium, walking away with a 40-37 win.

“Mason Oetgen, ninth grader, Knemka Chukwumerije, 10th grader, and Ethan Ng, 11th grader were big for us in the fourth quarter, getting stops and knocking down big free throws,” said Rams coach Andy Gil. Ng led the Rams with 13 and Khadim Pouye scored 11. Carpinteria opened the second half with an 8-0 run, and Cate fell behind 27-12. By the end of the third quarter, the lead was cut to 32-26. Cate improves to 2-1 overall, while Carpinteria falls to 0-4. The Rams open up play at the Ojai Invitational against Santa Paula on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 4:30 p.m.

December 4 - The Cate School boys soccer team fell to San Marcos by a score of 3-2.

Cate scored first in the match on a run and assist by freshman forward Kobby Nimako, who turned the corner on the right side and fed sophomore William Deardorff to knock the ball inside the post. Following a goal by the Royals to knot the game at 1-1, Nimako put the ball away for a 2-1 Rams advantage in the second half. San Marcos once again gained the equalizer to make the score 2-2. The Royals Jarod Vom Steeg put a shot on Rams goalie Devin Pai who made the save, but Vom Steeg’s teammate Peter Aldapa got the game winner when he buried home the rebound to give San Marcos a 3-2 non-league soccer victory. “We just weren’t hard on the ball in the middle of the field the way we wanted to be,” said Cate coach Peter Mack. “We gave them way too many opportunities just through the middle,” he added. Cate will be playing in this weekend’s College Cup High School Showcase, hosting matches on Friday and Saturday.

November 29 - The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team played their second home game against visiting opponent Santa Clarita Christian, falling by a score of 41-19. “Without two key starters Kaela Kelly and Sallury Hernandez, the Warriors knew that they had to step up their level of play and started the game well with high intensity on the defensive end and closed the first half down, 8-14,” said Carpinteria coach Benti De La Cruz. Sophomore Hannia Hernandez was the leading scorer for the Warriors, putting seven points on the board. “It was also junior Michelle Alpizar’s first time playing point guard, but she demonstrated her potential to be an offensive threat,” said De La Cruz. Carpinteria overall is now 0-2.

December 4 - The Carpinteria High School girls basketball team hosted their rival Bishop Diego for their annual matchup on Tuesday night with the Warriors dropping a 33-28 decision. “The Warriors started the game slowly, and their first buckets came early in the second quarter with Jasmine Gutierrez hitting a jump shot, followed by a three-point shot both from the right wing,” explained Carpinteria coach Benti De La Cruz. The leading scorer for the Warriors was sophomore Hannia Hernandez with 10, followed by junior Michelle Alpizar with eight. Carpinteria was without a few of their players as only seven Warriors suited up. The first half ended with Bishop up 16-7, and the Cardinals were able to keep the lead throughout the remainder of the game. The Warriors’ overall record is 0-3.

Girls soccer

November 30 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team dropped to 0-4 with their 1-0 non-league loss to Santa Clara. “The Saints were much improved over the past few seasons and their goal towards the end of the first half stood up,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. “I thought we were the stronger team overall, especially in the second half, but we just could not generate many good chances,” explained Bryant.

December 4 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team fell in a non-league game to Grace Brethren, 2-0. “I thought Emmelly Santillan, Erika Estrada and Emily Montoya played well for us, as did most of the players at quite a few points during the game,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Carpinteria gave up the first goal with about 10 minutes to go in the first half on a turnover that turned into a 1-0 deficit. the Warriors gave up the second goal in the second half from about 18 yards out to trail 2-0. “I thought this was one of our best games to date and that we were sound defensively—not just in the back but also in the midfield,” said Bryant. Carpinteria is now 0-7 overall.

November 30 - The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team came out to defend their home field, and the result was a 3-1 victory over Dunn. Angel Orozco opened the scoring in the 12th minute on a corner kick that deflected off a Dunn player. The score remained 1-0 into the half. The Warriors came out in the second half with a goal from Cristian Flores that made it 2-0 in the 56th minute. “Dunn cut the lead to 2-1 when they scored on a long ball that caught Brian Garcia by surprise in the 66th minute,” said Carpinteria coach Leo Quintero. “Three minutes later on a spectacular play down the right flank, Angel Orozco made a great individual play by splitting two defenders, and served a beauty of a ball that first-time varsity player Cristian Guzman headed into the net to ice the game with ten minutes left and a 3-1 advantage,” said Quintero. “Tonight, we moved up three JV players Tristan Esquivel, Vincent Rinaldi and twin brother Caesar Rinaldi, and all three gave a solid performance,” explained the eight-year head coach. Quintero also noted the play of Adrian Gonzales, Alberto Arroyo, Eddie Mendoza and Alex Ramirez. The Warriors are overall, 2-0-1 with a Citrus Coast League record of 0-0-0.

December 3 - The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team in the first game out of Carpinteria this season, fell to Channel Islands, 3-1. Channel Islands had a 2-0 advantage within a 10-minute span. Solomon Nahooikaika-Anderson cut the lead to 2-1. A minute before the half, the Raiders struck again to make it 3-1, and that’s how the game ended. “Our team seemed low on energy, out of sync and not performing to their standards,” said Warriors coach Leo Quintero. “We don’t discredit Channel Islands on a good win …,” added Quintero. It was the first loss for the Warriors in 20 games, dating back to last year’s State sectional title.

Carpinteria’s overall record is now 2-1-1 and 0-0-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

December 4 - The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team played at Cate Tuesday evening with the Rams coming away with a 40-37 win. Ian Reed led the Warriors with 14 points, making seven of nine free throws, while Ali Hamadi helped with eight rebounds and four steals. “Carpinteria got off to a strong start this evening despite not shooting the ball well—one of 12 threes in first half, four for 20 on the game, by playing solid defense in the first half …,” said Warriors coach Corey Adam. In the second half, Carpinteria took a 31-16 lead with about four minutes left in the third. “I feel like I let my boys down tonight, Andy (Gil) made some adjustments calling ball screens almost every time down, and I never called a timeout to adjust,” explained Adam of the Cate coach’s strategy. The Warriors play Santa Clara today in the Fillmore Tournament.

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH My father, Robert Gillman Beamish, died this past summer on June 30. He was 85, born in 1932. When Sunday rolls around I still think of visiting him, and a couple of weeks ago at Thanksgiving, I began to go through the logistics of getting him to our place. On the heels of these thoughts comes the inexplicable reality of his absence. But my dad himself would have insisted that “it just had to be, the body breaks down.” He would have said it in kindness as I’ve heard him say of friends and family members who departed before him. He might have also said of his own death, “Sayonara, baby” while sharing a beer with me, or alternately, that he’d “left the planet.”

We spent a lot of time on weekends in Laguna Beach when I was a kid, driving down PCH along the cliffs and the thenopen country of Irvine Ranch. You’d get a glimpse of what the ocean was doing at El Morro, the high rock walls on the south end of the beach like something from a mythological land—especially with 8- or 10-feet of south swell caroming off the ramparts, spray and foam blasting skyward. Parking his Volvo sedan, the seat fabric stiff and itchy from dried saltwater, my dad would then unlock the trunk where he kept a set of Churchill flippers in a box and a beach towel that was as stiff and crusty with dried saltwater as the seats in his car. Splashing tincture of Benzoin on his lips with two fingers (a habit he picked-up as an LA County Lifeguard in the 1950s) he’d grab the flippers and towel, slam the trunk shut and we’d make our way down the wood steps at Oak Street. I would have already had my boogie board under arm, fins dangling from my grasp, standing on the sidewalk watching him—his tanned skin, hair combed back, the faint scent of

Old Spice about him.

My dad (he would have said “call me Bob”) took me to the beach every weekend, laying the foundation for a surfing life. I slept on the floor of a downstairs apartment he rented in Corona del Mar, free all-day Saturday and Sunday from the work week of school and my regular life at home in Newport Heights, back from the harbor. I wasn’t board surfing until about 10-years-old, but my dad gave me lots of ocean knowledge leading up to that time: how to read the water, see how it moved and know what breaks worked on different swell conditions throughout Southern California. There was a solid vein of lifeguard training that went with all of this, my father having worked under the great Preston P. Peterson—one of the founders of California surfing and lifeguarding, a true “waterman”—and I put in many “run-swim-runs” along the sand and out to the buoys at Big Corona.

So, his ashes had been resting in a polished box on the mantle though late summer and into the fall. We’d made an ofrenda this year, with marigolds from the garden and a bouquet my wife put together of other flowers and herbs as she’d taken to doing for him in the last few months of his life when I’d go to see him at the care center in Goleta. I placed a picture of him at about 13-years-old with his mom and dad at their place in Hollywood, their glowing smiles seeming to show the war over and done with and prosperity ahead in 1945. Dad was a child actor, which he wasn’t too keen on as he felt he’d lost out on a regular upbringing with school and friends, although he knew everyone from Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby to W.C Fields and Frank Sinatra. Still, they were only fancy grownups.

In October, I had intended to sail across to Scorpion Anchorage on Santa Cruz Island from Fourth Beach to coincide with the Polynesian Voyaging Society’s va’a Hikianalia visiting Chumash on the island.

But strong Northeast winds—the same pattern that drove last year’s Thomas Fire—prevented the trip for all parties.

But a couple of weeks later, in the first week of November, the conditions were better and I loaded up for an overnighter aboard my good little ship, Cormorant.

The Neptune Society had provided a paper box with leaf patterns pressed in and a biodegradable bag, and Natasha had helped me transfer Dad’s ashes from the case they’d been delivered in to the paper box. I took a pinch of his remains

Ghosting home on Nov. 5 to Fourth Beach, Carpinteria from Scorpion Anchorage, the 18-foot boat Cormorant approaches Platform Hogan a few miles offshore. and sprinkled them on the mulch of one of the garden beds, thinking about how the ash had rained down last December, and, strangely, about the delicious morel mushrooms that had sprung up all around our place after the devastating rain of the debris flows.

I got down to Fourth Beach late in the morning, and saw a fellow boat builder from town who I’m getting to know with his family and his fine Chesapeake dory—our two beach boats down on the sand, a vision of how the old ways yet live on. There was nary a breath of wind, but the rowing was fine across the silky water, and I kept on for some time

until the lightest of breezes came up and I hoisted sail, passing platform Hogan at the pace of a leisurely stroll. Like surfing time, boat time is a time apart, and even if it took hours and hours to get a mere 8 miles offshore to pick up a proper wind in the open channel, I’d been easy in my thoughts as the mainland slid further and further aft.

The wind picked up briskly out there, and I rounded-up at one point to put a reef in the main sail, wallowing between swells in the deep, deep blue. Then I was off again, Santa Cruz Island still only a craggy outline in the sunny haze ahead as Cormorant skipped across. My thought had been to get well outside before releasing Dad’s ashes, because I envisioned the box dissolving and the ash spreading out, carried southeast on the current passed Pt. Magu and on down passed Zuma where he’d guarded with Preston P., and Malibu where he’d know those boys from Muñoz, to Kivlin, to Cole to Noll.

Conditions were brisk, and the boat demanded nearly all of my attention as the bigger swells put a potentially dangerous pitch to the hull when we crested. But I managed to reach forward and pop the lid on the bucket where I’d stowed the paper box. Unable to stop in the rising heave and blow of the shipping lanes, I unceremoniously chucked the box overboard, saw the big splash and glimpsed the surprisingly quick sinking in that clear channel water. And just like that, he was gone. I said, “I love you, Dad,” as I threw the box, then chanted all the surf breaks from Rincon on down to Windan Sea that he had taken me to in all those years of his raising me up.

Carpinteria Morning Rotarian Wade Nomura was recently in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico to evaluate a water project for the Rotary Foundation. Nomura serves as a leading water and sanitation project evaluator for the Rotary Foundation globally and evaluates up to eight projects a year. The project in Matamoros supplied water for 16,680 people that previously had no water for their homes. This project was completed in conjunction with the local government and a Houston-based Rotary Club.

“The impact of this project was immediately noticeable, you can literally see the difference between the households that the project supplied with water, and those that (it) did not,” said Nomura.

This spring, Nomura will travel to Haiti to evaluate two more clean water projects.

Upon returning from a Rotary trip to Mexico and Central America, Wade Nomura receives a warm embrace from Rotary Club President Elect Paul Wright.

Honoring veterans, celebrating 243 years of US Marine Corps

To celebrate the 243rd birthday of the US Marine Corps, and in honor of Veterans Day, a group of veteran service members met at Sandpiper Mobile Home Park on Nov. 10. In attendance was a Red Cross volunteer from the 1960s, an Army veteran from England, a Navy Corpsman who served the Marine Corps, other military veterans, and family of deceased veterans.

Every year, hundreds of Carpinterians count on the annual Holiday Lights Tour to kick off the Christmas season. This year’s event held on Dec. 1 delivered ticket holders by trolley to the most colorful and creatively decorated houses in Carpinteria. Orchestrated by Parents for Canalino, the trolley tour helps to raise funds for enrichment activities and teacher support materials throughout the school year.

Girls Inc. celebrates past, envisions bold future

Photos by DaviD PowDrell anD Debra herrick Girls Inc. of Carpinteria celebrated 47 years of striving to inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold at the organization’s annual fundraiser, An Evening in Bloom, on Dec. 1. The event also honored Dorothy Campbell, who in the early 70s, started an afterschool program in her home for the daughters of working moms, the Girls Club, that would grow to be the modern day Girls Inc. of Carpinteria.

For Victoria Juarez, the night marked her last moments as executive director of Girls Inc., after eight years at its helm. In a tearful address to coworkers, board and community members, she said that in her new position at Santa Barbara Scholarship Foundation she looked forward to continuing to work for “our girls” to be strong, smart and bold.

CVN goes deep Down Under

On a recent trip to Australia, Joe and Lucy Overgaag took the Coastal View News along when they visited their family in Mount Isa, Queensland. Nephew Mark Van Ryt treated them on a tour to Mount Isa Mines where they went 5,000 feet underground. They drove multiple tunnels, and saw workshops, equipment and safety systems. They also got to ride in a big dumpster.

The mine produces copper, zinc, lead and silver. Before going to Mount Isa, the Overgaags went on an expedition to the Northern Territory, followed by a coastal cruise exploring the Kimberly in remote Northwestern Australia.
