Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this long-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations, and to help guide conservation action.

The data collected by observers over the past century allow Audubon researchers, conservation biologists, wildlife agencies and other interested individuals to study the long-term health and status of bird populations across North America. When combined with other surveys, the Christmas count provides a picture of how the continent’s bird populations have changed over the past 100 years. The long-term perspective is vital for conservationists, and informs strategies to protect birds and their habitat by identifying environmental issues with implications for people as well.

Interfaith Vigil to end gun violence planned

In recognition of the 2018 Annual National Vigil for Victims of Gun Violence, on Sunday, Dec. 9, the Coalition Against Gun Violence, Rev. Julia Hamilton and the Unitarian Society are hosting an Interfaith Vigil including faith leaders of multiple traditions to honor victims and families of gun violence. Clergy from seven diverse faiths will say prayers in their tradition. Lois Capps to give book talk

The Carpinteria Woman’s Club is sponsoring the Adopt a Family for Christmas program. Members are collecting donations of canned and non-perishable foods to fill boxes that will be distributed to needy families in Carpinteria on Dec. 15. Wreaths Across America honors Carpinteria veterans

On Saturday, Dec. 15, at 9 a.m., Wreaths Across America will begin its Santa Barbara County ceremonies at Carpinteria Cemetery before heading to five other cemeteries throughout the day. During the event, participants lay remembrance wreaths on the graves of veterans and say each name aloud. Last year, 500 wreaths were placed at the cemeteries. This year, organizers hope to have 2,000 wreaths. Worldwide, nearly 1,400 cemeteries host wreath ceremonies, placing over 1.5 million wreaths for veterans. The Carpinteria Boy Scouts opened their annual Christmas Tree Lot on Saturday, Nov. 24, at a new location this year, in the field behind St. Joseph Church at 1532 Linden Ave. The Boy Scouts Christmas Tree Lot is a yearly fundraiser in support of scouting programs, camping and activities. On average between 800 and 1,000 trees are sold each year.

California Avocado Festival Upon the season of thankfulness, friends and family the 2018 California Avocado Festival Board of Directors would like to say “THANK YOU” to the City of Carpinteria, the 2018 sponsors of the festival who help make the festival a success, The Carpinteria – Summerland Fire Department, the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department - Carpinteria Station, the vendors, the entertainers, and the many, many volunteers that made the 32nd Annual California Avocado Festival a success.

Looking into the future, we’d like to grow the number and ways that we can help our community, the local retailers, local eateries and our non-profits. Cannabis regulations approved by City, now head to Coastal Commission

In a 5-0 vote at the Nov. 26 City Council meeting, council members unanimously voted in favor of approving the draft ordinance regulating commercial cannabis regulations citywide.

After adult-use marijuana was legalized state-wide in 2016, the City of Carpinteria implemented a moratorium on commercial cannabis activities in order to research commercial cannabis growing operations and to receive feedback from the community. The moratorium period allowed the City to define regulations that would best fit the community, and required the City to have ordinances on the books before May of 2019, when the moratorium ends.

Approving the draft ordinance does not immediately enact the new regulations, but rather it has passed one more step in the process—the ordinance still must be accepted by the California Coastal Commission.

During the meeting, discussion of the issue included a thorough staff report exploring much of the previous research and community feedback. Many members of the public made comments both in favor and against commercial cannabis operations in Carpinteria.

Some of the main concerns mentioned were the odor, level of noise and extension of the buffer zone (areas within 600 feet of a school, daycare or health facility where commercial marijuana cannot be grown). Other members of the public were concerned about upticks in crime and the effect that cannabis growth will have on Carpinteria.

Community member Maureen Foley Claffey read the letter to the editor she wrote, published in The Washington Post (“A not-so-high opinion of California pot”), which responded to the Oct. 14 Post article, “Room for pot among the pinot,” that examined the cannabis industry in Carpinteria. Claffey stated: “The article omitted local voices for perspectives on the black market growers who popped up over night with no odor control, the lack of enforcement for illegal operations, the armed robberies at local cannabis farms in the past year, the current ‘grow’ operations adjacent to the local high school, or the proliferation of armed guards and barbed-wire fences that have transformed the town into a jail-like landscape.”

Despite these concerns, many in atten-

dance were in favor of regulation, citing the level of control and safety it would provide to the City and legal growers, noting that many of the issues stem from illegal grow operations and not legal and regulated ones. Commercial cannabis grower and local home owner Casey Dalton commented, “I’m a mother and I’m a home owner here, and I get the ‘not in my backyard’ but all I can share with you is that regulation brings safety, and regulation drives out the black market, and regulation is where we need to go.”

Echoing those sentiments, council members voted to move regulation forward in the industrial research park district with an extension of the 600-foot buffer zone. Monday’s vote dealt with land use, while restrictions on the size and number of future commercial cannabis operations will be considered once the City creates a licensing program for these businesses.

South Coast youth Task Force update

Coordinator Saul Serrano from the South Coast Task Force on Youth Safety gave an update on the important work the Task Force has been doing in Carpinteria and surrounding communities. The Task Force has been working for the last eight years in and around Carpinteria and is composed of 37 members that meet quarterly as well as a Strategy Team and a Service Provider Network that meet more often. The organization’s mission is “to improve and support the safety and quality of life for youth, their families and the community.”

The Task Force began by focusing on youth involvement in gangs and youth already in the system, and the numbers of both have decreased in recent years. Additionally, the number of youth admitted to Juvenile Hall has also decreased over this time span. Serrano noted that between 2016 and 2017 there was an uptick in these numbers, which the Task Force is monitoring, but both gang involvement and levels of incarceration are well below the data from 2009 when the Task Force started its work.

During his report, City Manager Dave Durflinger highlighted important seasonal information for residents. In coming weeks, Winter Storm Readiness and Emergency Alert and Preparedness meetings are scheduled and will be open to the public. In addition to storm preparation, plans to construct the winter berm on the beach are set to commence Dec. 3, with work continuing through Dec. 7. The construction activity will be on the beach between Linden and Ash avenues, and the public is asked to stay away from the active construction zone during this time.

A Christmas Carol at the Alcazar

The Lions had their own Christmas miracle after the building was flooded two days before the Festival of Trees’ scheduled opening. Dozens of community members came together to make sure the Festival continued.

‘Twas the night before Thanksgiving, when all through the Lions Club Festival of Trees, not a creature was stirring... Or so the Lions thought.

Just before midnight, Leanne Rose, a Juggette dancer for the bands Dusty Juggz and the Rincons, was on her way home from The Palms when she saw an inch of water creeping within 20 feet of the front door to the old Austin’s Home Center where 26 Christmas trees stood decorated with gifts to be raffled in support of Carpinteria nonprofits. “The trees are flooding,” hollered Rose as she ran into The Palms to alert Lion Curtis Lopez who was onstage playing a set with the Rincons. Lopez immediately called Lions Neil Bartlett, Mike Hickey and Mike Dawson, gathering the troops to save the trees.

“Our hearts sank,” said Lopez. “Ev-

erything was on the ground. Neil said to me, ‘I guess we have to cancel,’ and I said, ‘Think again.’” Between late Wednesday night and Thursday morning, over 35 people showed up to help disassemble the trees and get all of the gifts on top of tables. The opening date was pushed from Friday to Saturday as Castro’s Cleaning wet-vacuumed the floors and set up fans and heaters. By early Saturday morning, the room was dry, but it still took volunteers from nearly every service group in town to reassemble the two dozen plus trees. “It was all-hands on deck. We put everything back together.

It was amazing,” said Lopez. At 11 a.m. on Saturday morning, the ninth annual Festival of Trees opened to the public.

This year’s fundraiser will benefit Alcazar Theatre, Carpinteria High School Boosters, Movies in the Park, CEF, CVYAA Junior Warriors and United Boys & Girls Clubs–Carpinteria Unit.

Palm Loft Gallery presents “So Grateful!” a one-man art show featuring the paintings of artist John Wullbrandt. The show will open on Saturday, Dec. 8, and run through Jan. 27.

Gratitude is central to Wullbrandt’s outlook on life and art. Though he lost his art studio in the Thomas Fire, he saved his home and never fails to include the words “so grateful” in his reflections on the experience. Last year, when Wullbrandt was invited John Wullbrandt, “John Deere on the to join the Oak Group, a small Chismahoo” group of plein air artists that formed in 1986 and has since contributed over $3 million toward open space preservation, he responded with his ever-present gratitude: “I am both humbled and inspired by the invitation to join fellow artists in the prestigious Oak Group. The camaraderie and determination of this organization to preserve the natural environment through art is a task I accept wholeheartedly and with gratitude.”

Now, one year after the Thomas fire, Palm Loft Gallery proudly presents a collection of paintings by Wullbrandt that underscore the artist’s unrelenting optimism in the face of fiery tragedy. Gallery owner Arturo Tello describes Wullbrandt as “a Carpinteria hero, good friend and extraordinary human being.”

An opening reception for “So Grateful!” will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Wullbrandt will be in attendance to greet the public and talk about his art. Wine and pizza will be served. At 5 p.m. there will be a silent auction of selected works of art as a fundraiser for the Palm Loft Gallery, and immediately following the reception at 6:30 p.m. Jen Hajj, an award-winning songwriter from Idyllwild, will perform an acoustic set.

Fast break blues as Carpinteria falls to Channel Islands

BY ALONZO OROZCO • PHOTOS BY ROSANA SWING Like the Warriors girls basketball team, the Carpinteria High School boys basketball team has begun a new era under first-year coach Corey Adam. Following a season opening loss to Foothill Tech a couple of weeks ago, the Warriors hosted Channel Islands on Monday, Nov. 26. Missing three players due to injury, Adam’s squad was pressured all over the court, finally succumbing to the Pirates by a score of 63 to 49. Carpinteria starts the season off 0-2, while Channel Islands moves to 2-0 on the season, having won at Nordhoff in a previous game.

The Warriors got off to a good start with Dylan O’Niel hitting a birthday three-pointer as his team quickly took a 7-2 lead. But a pair of free throws by the Pirates’ Malik Patton put the visitors up 8-7 with under two minutes left in the first quarter. Carpinteria briefly recaptured the lead 12-11 on a long three

by Ian Reed. However, Channel Islands’ Frederick Romero drilled a trey of his own and the Pirates took a 14-12 lead at the end of the first.

Things began to spiral downward in the second quarter for the home team, as Channel Islands converted some easy buckets to take a 20-12 lead. The Warriors, with four underclassmen on the team, hung in there to trail 31-25 at the half. “Twenty turnovers at halftime, and we’re only down six,” said Adam.

“I’ve been coaching for 17 years and have never been within six points having 20 turnovers,” explained Adam who was previously a coach at Santa Barbara for 15 of those years.

The Pirates got off to another quick start in the third quarter, scoring the first eight points to build a 39-25 lead with

still six minutes to play. O’Neil finally broke the scoring drought with a bucket underneath, but the Warriors still trailed 40-27. Gabe Medel, who was awarded the Santa Barbara Round Table’s Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award earlier in the day, put one in to trim the lead to 11.

Two free throws by Ian Reed knocked the lead down to 44-35, and Reed and O’Neil both led the Warriors in scoring with 11 each on the night. But five unanswered points by Channel Islands gave the visitors a 49-35 lead by the end of the third.

A series of foul shots by Chris Ramirez helped reduce the deficit to 57-46 with 2:24 left in the game. Ramirez made nine points and 13 rebounds while running the offense from his point guard position. Following a steal and subsequent free throw by Luke Nakasone, Carpinteria came within nine, but the Pirates closed out the game’s final five points for the win.

Patton was the game’s leading scorer with 21 points. The Warriors had 32 turnovers for the game, and made only 10 of 21 free throws. “Our half-court defense was really good, but with that many T.O.s (turnovers) we didn›t give ourselves a chance to set up defensively,” said Adam, whose team fell victim to the Channel Islands fast break all night. Carpinteria sophomore Jose Suarez pitched in eight points for the game.

The Warriors played without last season’s leading scorers Noah Nuno, Ali Hamadi and Jo Jo Gonzalez. They’ll need all the help they can get when they travel to Santa Barbara to take on rival Bishop Diego this Saturday, Dec. 1, with the tipoff at 6 p.m.

short stops CHS Tri-Sport Student Athlete Gabe Medel receives Phil Womble Award

Carpinteria High School junior Gabe Medel, who plays three sports for the Warriors, came home Monday, Nov. 26, with the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s Phil Womble Ethics in Sports Award. Medel carries a 3.9 GPA and takes SBCC Dual Enrollment courses. Medel has also found time to be a volunteer coach for the Special Olympics, as well as coaching the Carpinteria Mavericks Basketball Club. He recently finished the water polo season, helping Carpinteria win the Citrus Coast League Championship with a 6-0 record, while being named Second Team All-League.

Recently, Medel started playing basketball for the Warriors, and in the Spring, he plans to compete on the volleyball team. Medel is also involved in campus life, serving as a member of MESA (Math, Engineering and Science Aptitude), EAOP (Early Academic Outreach Program), the Guitar Club and the Yearbook Committee.

Volleyball coach Dino Garcia said through award presenter Dave Pintard that Medel “thinks quickly on his feet.” Volleyball coach Stephen Kim said, “He is an excellent example of commitment, hard work and positive attitude that pays off.”

CHS Football receives both Team and CIF Honors

Named to the First Team were: senior WR/RB Brady Sturdivan and senior DB Chris Ramirez. Warriors named to the Second Team were seniors: LB Isaac De Alba, DL Luke Calloway and QB Vance Keiser. The team held its banquet on Nov. 11, and team captains De Alba, Keiser and Sturdivan were all recognized. Additionally, the three received individual awards with De Alba winning Most Valuable Back, Keiser the Team/Program MVP and Sturdivan winning Offensive MVP honors.

Other award winners included: junior Will Collins as Most Inspirational and senior Max Coppel the Best Blocker; Best Downfield Blocker was junior Jacob Mata; Most Valuable Lineman went to Calloway and the MVP Defense honor went to Ramirez.

MVP of Special Teams was senior Tito Arroyo, senior Adam Ernst won the Coaches Award, Outstanding Freshman Player went to Richard De Alba, the Outstanding Sophomore Player was Esai Vega and the Most Improved went to senior Jarrod Rice.

Cate School’s Blattberg named to girls volleyball All-CIF Team

Cate School Sports Information Director Dave Soto announced that junior Maya Blattberg was one of 12 players selected to the Division Seven All-CIF Team for Girls volleyball. Blattberg is the only player from Santa Barbara County to be selected to an All-CIF Team.

Cate School Football Team Receives High Accolades

At the All-CIF meeting in Los Alamitos on Nov. 21, the Cate School football team, who finished 9-1 overall and reached the quarterfinal round of the playoffs, came away with a multitude of honors. The Eight-man Division One coaches voted on the following Rams for the First Team: senior Jack Deardorff, senior Drew Anastasio, junior Callum Casey and junior Scott Holmes. Honorable Mentions included: senior Ethan Cassulo, who was one vote short of being named to the first team, and sophomore William Deardorff. Meanwhile, William’s older brother Jack was named Eight-man Division One Offensive Player of the Year. The elder Deardorff is the first Cate football player to receive one of the three major awards (the other major awards being the Defensive Player of the Year and League MVP).

The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team finished the season in first-place in the Citrus League with a perfect, 6-0 record. Nordhoff, Hueneme and Fillmore finished second, third and fourth, respectively. The MVP award went to senior Solomon Nahooikaika. Players selected for the League’s First Team were: seniors Ali Hamdi, Luke Nahooikaika, Liam Slade and JR Hajducko. Second Team selectees were: junior Gabe Medel and sophomore Ian Reed. Honorable Mention went to juniors Andy Johnson and Nate Endow, and freshman Mateo Handall.

The Warriors boys cross country team finished the Citrus League season in fifthplace, with Fillmore, Santa Paula, Hueneme and Nordhoff taking first through fourth places, respectively. Malibu finished in sixth-place. Carpinteria High School runner Caleb Classen was named to the League’s Second Team.

CHS girls tennis took first-place in the Citrus league season over Malibu, Hueneme, Nordhoff, Santa Paula and Fillmore, respectively. Carpinteria seniors Josie Gordon, Amy Perez, Karla Marin, Vivi Torres and Leigh Pluma were named to the Cirtus League First Team, and juniors Sydney Endow, Lexi Persoon and Jeanette Carrillo made Second Team. Honorable Mention went to senior Jessica Santillan and juniors Vicky Delk and Emma Lapidus.

November 27 - The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team beat Dos Pueblos in a 4-2 victory at the Warriors’ home opener. Rafael Lopez struck a volley just outside the 18 at the 28 minute mark of the first half. Ten minutes later in the 38th minute, Jose Jimenez made a shot from 30 yards out to put the Warriors up 2-0 into the half. The Charger offense returned to the pitch and struck in the 43rd minute to close the gap to 2-1. At the 66th minute mark, the Chargers tied the game 2-2. Eddie Mendoza then scored on a free kick in the 69th minute. The final goal was a free kick that Mendoza served across the box on a set piece to Luke Noohaikaika-Anderson, who made a header to score with just three minutes left in play, keeping Carpinteria unbeaten at home dating back to the 2016-17 season. “Notable performances by Solomon Noohaikaika-Anderson and Saul Hernandez,” said Warriors coach Leo Quintero. “Solid performance by first year varsity midfield starter Rafael Lopez, and great hustle play by another first year varsity starter Gabriel Ahedo,” explained Quintero. “Freshman Brian Garcia only making his second start of his high school career made key saves and lifted our team to victory tonight,” he added. Carpinteria’s overall record is 1-0-1.

Girls soccer November 27 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team dropped a 2-1 nonleague decision to Channel Islands. The Warriors got on the scoreboard first when Kendra Meza converted a left-footed shot into the upper corner from about 12 yards away. But Channel Islands tied the game in the first half as their player got behind a Warrior defender. The angled shot that Carpinteria keeper Isabel Studt tried to parry over the bar, ended up landing in the goal. The Pirates found the go-ahead goal on a distant shot that short-hopped the Carpinteria keeper with the rebound going to one of the Channel Islands players who put it in goal. “Our defender Emily Santillan valiantly tried to save it, but to no avail,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. “A tough way to lose. On the bright side, I thought Alyssa Rodriguez and Kenna Mayer played well on defense,” explained Bryant. Carpinteria is now 0-3 overall.

“Mid90s”

Stevie (Sunny Suljic)—a 13-year-old boy growing up in LA in the mid-90s—is a sweet kid. But he doesn’t have anyone to look up to. His dad is gone. His mom is, well, mom. And his older brother is just about the biggest tool in the shed.

I guess it’s no surprise that Stevie looks elsewhere for role models. And, to his mom’s chagrin, what he finds is a bunch of foul-mouthed skateboarders. Ray (Nakel) is the leader of the pack. He’s the best skateboarder—he’s really good—and he’s also the coolest. Then F---S--- (Olan Prenatt) is next in age, talent and coolness level. He’s the clown of the group. Whereas Ray is serious about his skating—he wants to go pro—F---S--- just wants to skate and party and not take anything too seriously. He thinks trying too hard is “cheesy.”

Then there is Fourth Grade (Ryder McLaughlin), who is mostly-quiet, videos everything, and apparently got his name because he’s only as smart as a fourth grader. Finally, there’s Ruben (Gio Galicia), a somewhat younger kid with a stony, brash exterior but maybe only because he has some serious stuff going

on at home (which he rarely visits).

That’s the crew. You get some vague sense that they go to school some of the time, but, really, it’s like the never-ending summer for these skateboarders. They skate and hangout and skate and party (booze, cigarettes, drugs, girls) and skate, skate, skate until the sun goes down.

All this skating in “Mid90s” is occasionally interrupted with the awkward, sometimes poignant, moments that constitute growing up. Stevie has his first beer. He hooks up with a girl for the first time. He fights with his brother, but then has a talk about how their parents let them down. He hears about how Ruben’s dad beats him, how Fourth Grade can barely afford socks, and about how the tragedies in Ray’s family dwarf anything he has ever experienced.

Most of these characters are likable in their own ways. Despite teenagers in general being, well, the worst, it’s hard not to fall in love (actually, better say like) with some of these kids.

However, this is a short movie—only 84 minutes. So there’s not a lot of time for character development—especially the gradual, trickling character development that’s required for a coming-of-age movie like this. Aside from maybe Stevie and Ray, we are only left with hints of depth—we see a rag-tag bunch of larks that promise, but don’t really reveal, roundness of character.

Most coming-of-age flicks are all about the characters. “Mid90s” is also all about the nostalgia—about Super Nintendo, skateboarding videos, baggy jeans and Nike high tops. This movie is bathed in the past, which, I expect, will be most effective for those of us who actually grew

up in the mid-1990s.

This movie also reminds you—or me, at least—of how annoying teenagers are. Yeah, awkward moments can be charming. And, yeah, yeah, I know being carefree and even irresponsible is just part of growing up. Nonetheless, as I sit here on this side of puberty, watching and hearing these kids who, definitely more than average teens, are reckless, troubled, aimless and often just plain mean, I can’t help but sympathize with Stevie’s mom, who thinks this particular gang of misfits ought to be disbanded.

I know we are supposed to feel that, dammit, these are Stevie’s people and that’s how it goes and that’s so important.

But when is too much, too much? Given how these kids are portrayed in the movie, I don’t know that I could fault Stevie’s mom if she decided to move to the middle of nowhere, or send her son to boarding school, or something—anything.

And I think all of this speaks to an awkward (though not necessarily damning) tension in Jonah Hill’s debut filmmaking.

It’s kind of like the tension between Ray and F---S---. Ray is serious about what he does; F---S--- thinks being serious about anything is cheesy. Jonah Hill doesn’t seem quite sure whether he wants to be serious or whether he wants to make some point, or just have fun making a movie.

Much of the movie feels like the latter—like he’s just showing us, and reminding us, how it was growing up in a certain time and place. But then there are more serious moments too, and to give voice to the F---S--- side of me, many of these moments teeter, though maybe don’t quite topple, into cheesiness.

So, what would I say about Jonah

Hill’s first attempt at writing/directing?

Uneven. But I would also say it shows promise. Maybe, hopefully, this movie is as much a part of a coming-of-age tale— with all the usual awkwardness and bad decision-making—for its filmmaker as it is for its characters.

“Mid90s” is rated R for pervasive language, sexual content, drug and alcohol use, some violent behavior/disturbing images—all involving minors.

Santa hears wish lists at Holiday Faire

Artisans from around California set up shop for their eclectic handmade crafts at the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History’s 38th Annual Holiday Faire on Saturday, Nov. 24. Along with holiday gifts and goodies available for purchase, children met with Santa Claus and his elves to send their wish lists to the North Pole.

Scorpion Stopover

UNPREDICTABLE WILDERNESS CHUCK GRAHAM Looking into the morning sun, I couldn’t make heads or tails as to what was landing in Scorpion Anchorage on the southeast end of Santa Cruz Island. At first, I thought it was a California brown pelican, but I quickly realized the beak wasn’t there. Then it landed, an immature snow goose that was way off course on its fall migration path.

I love birds, but admittedly I am not a good birder, not even close. I’m way more efficient getting images of birds than I am identifying them. My strength lies within my approach, using virtually everything to get a photograph of them.

First off, I just want to get close enough to identify the species. After that, I’ll use every boulder, branch, the sun, anything to break up my approach and keep the birds comfortable while I work to get them in the frame.

The flipside to that is I love a good landscape image, and working the avian subject into their environment. However, when it comes to identifying all the migrating warblers and sparrows landing in Scorpion Canyon—one of the larger canyons on the north-side of the most biodiverse isle off the California coast—I need to get close. There are just way too many bands, eye rings, tufts, colorations, birdsong and feathers for me to decipher.

Fortunately, there is a good network of birders who are way better than me at identifying all the migrants landing on

the island. Some of those birds are naturally drawn to the rugged, windswept chain, and others like that immature snow goose simply get blown way off course. But luckily, it’s a place to land and regroup. By the way, that snow goose is listed as a very rare winter time visitor on Santa Cruz Island and a very rare transient on neighboring Anacapa Island to the southeast.

The Island Packers’ crew has some very good birders. Captain Joel Barrett is considered one of the best birders in Ventura County. In early November, I had a bevy of birds on my camera and I didn’t have a clue as to what they were. While passengers were boarding the boat, I ran up to the wheelhouse with my camera.

Barrett easily identified every sparrow and warbler I had photographed over the last four days. He’s got a keen eye and knows all the little things to look for when it comes to identifying birds.

I do keep a bird book. I enjoy Roger Tory Peterson’s Guide to Birds, but even so, I get lost in all the little nuances to birding. A palm warbler? I didn’t have any idea that’s what I was photographing between the two campgrounds up Scorpion Canyon. It was mixed in with several yellow-rumped warblers, but it was moving differently than the yellowrumped, so I made a mental note of it.

Barrett knew it as soon as I showed it to him. That was a new bird for me. A Nashville warbler was another new bird as well. A pair of those were hanging out in the last saltbush where Scorpion Canyon and the beach converge. They were there for a couple days and then they were gone.

Aaron Kreisberg is the best birder amongst the kayak guides. Fortunately, he and I work a lot of the same days, so with his keen eye and his handy-dandy bird app we’ve had some success identifying some migrants off my camera.

One of those was the rare sighting of an ovenbird, maybe no more than four documented sightings on Santa Cruz Island.

and fox sparrows. After that, I need my hand held. I get lost once the chipping, Lincoln’s, clay-colored, Brewer ’s and others arrive hopping between the coyote bush, lemonade berry and morning glory.

Mix in the several varieties of dark-eyed juncos and it’s an avian scrum for me.

Fall migration finishes roughly by the middle of November, so as I’m writing this I know there are still a couple of weeks of keeping my eyes and ears open.

A saw-whet owl has been hanging around the upper end of the lower campground in Scorpion Canyon. Kreisberg heard it and immediately went to his birding app, utilizing the owl’s call. He turned up the volume on his phone calling back to the saw-whet. Sure enough, the tiny owl drew closer to where we sat. You don’t always have to see them to identify them.
