Lions Club Festival of Trees begins day after Thanksgiving

The Carpinteria Lions Club will host its ninth annual Festival of Trees, Nov. 23 to Dec. 8. Once again, the event will be held at the old Austin’s Home Center at 700 Linden Ave., where it has been held many times over the years. Twentysix trees will be decorated with gifts and raffled to raise money for Carpinteria nonprofits Alcazar Theatre, Carpinteria High School Boosters, Movies in the Park, CEF, CVYAA Junior Warriors and United Boys & Girls Clubs – Carpinteria Unit.

Local individuals, businesses and nonprofits donate hundreds of gifts to be raffled off in the annual Lions Club Festival of Trees fundraiser.

Boy Scouts Christmas tree lot opens Saturday

The Carpinteria Boy Scouts will open their annual Christmas Tree Lot on Saturday, Nov. 24, at noon. Scouts from Pack 50, Troop 50 and Troop 147, along with their parents, built tree corrals at St Jospeph Church in preparation for the arrival of nearly 1,000 Christmas trees. The lot is at a new location this year, in the field behind St. Joseph Church at 1532 Linden Ave. The Boy Scouts Christmas Tree Lot sales make up the organization’s largest fundraiser of the year in support of boy scout programs, camping and activities.

Casitas Pass Hwy 101 northbound on-ramp opens

The new Highway 101 northbound on-ramp at Casitas Pass road opened on Nov. 16. From Casitas Pass road, drivers are now using the new Via real section to access the northbound on-ramp. With the opening of the new ramp, Via real north of Casitas Pass road and the old northbound freeway on-ramp are closed. Crews are working on retaining walls in the area prior to construction of the new Via real connection up to Linden Avenue. Hales Lane residents will continue to use Via real to access their homes.

On Nov. 19, a candlelight vigil was held at the Seal Fountain in memory of Mark “Marky” Meza, who was killed in the mass shooting at the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks on Nov. 7. Hundreds of candles were lit by family, friends and community members, while speakers recalled the loving and joyful light that filled Meza. It would have been Meza’s 21st birthday. Mourners sang “Happy Birthday” to close the vigil, then walked to the beach in a procession along Linden Avenue to cast hundreds of flowers to the sea.

New arts center will open soon

As board chair of the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center, I suspect I get about two dozen calls and emails per week asking about the status of our construction project at 865 and 855 Linden Avenue.

The construction continues to move forward beautifully. What's incredible to us is that so many contractors, electricians, designers, architects and others have stepped up to assist in the project at no charge. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art donated $50,000 of gallery lighting to us recently. It's a modern day barn raising and a really fun story to share with our members, donors, artists, volunteers and others.

Site Manager Norm Arnold has been directing and coordinating the teams of people coming and going daily. Project Managers Gregg Carty and Joe Sevilla have consistently gone beyond the call of duty, again at no charge to the arts center.

The number one question being asked is "When will the construction be completed?" Answer: "Hard to say for sure but we're hoping sometime in February or early March 2019."

We can't thank the community enough for all their support; our donors, our members, our volunteers, our local artists and all our friends of the art center. We will be forever grateful to all the construction workers that have played a role. Our staff and our board of directors are the best of the best.

Hang on tight though...we have some incredible plans in the works to engage the entire community of Carpinteria in the arts once our doors open; painting, poetry, dance, music, ceramics, photography, storytelling and much more!

President Trump just doesn’t get it

American hero, retired Navy Admiral William McRaven, said on Sunday what the majority have said for years, that Donald Trump is a singular threat to the democracy of the United States of America.

Mr. McRaven, who oversaw the Navy SEAL mission that killed Osama bin Laden, said that “the president’s attack on the media is the greatest threat to our democracy in my lifetime. When you undermine the people’s right to a free press and freedom of speech and expression, then you threaten the Constitution and all for which it stands.”

Mr. Trump, who inferred John McCain wasn’t a hero because he was captured, and famously mocked a Gold Star family, dismissed our SEAL’s bravery Sunday, saying, “Wouldn’t it have been nice if we got Osama bin Laden a lot sooner than that?”

This oblivious, un-American coward who picks fights with allies and praises authoritarians the world over was called out by the American people on Nov. 6, for good reason. His attempts to normalize the absurdity that is his presidency hit a snag.

This abominable being, untethered to morals and truth, has found his obsessive need for admiration and power harder than he envisioned. Although he’s president, he is wholly unqualified intellectually, psychologically and emotionally. His daddy isn’t around to bail him out; and like a caged animal, he’s lashing out at anyone and everything.

Democracy is one of the most beautiful concepts in the world; and those who’ve fought to maintain it, and those like my grandfather who helped to destroy Hitler in Europe, understood what it takes and why we do anything to protect it.

Dictators Stalin, Hitler and Mao all denounced the press as “enemies of the people.” And if Trump thinks this is an appropriate tactic, he better think again.

A community grieves with a family and the nation

Mark Meza’s family and friends are experiencing profound grief. There is no death that compares with the sudden and senseless loss of a child. That empty chair at the dinner table is never filled.

When we read about the numbers of mass shootings this year, the numbers of people shot, the numbers of children killed by guns, the numbers of suicides and domestic violence tragedies, these are not just numbers. Each number has a face, a loved-one, family, friends and co-workers.

Every time there is another shooting, these survivors re-live their grief.

Should the shock of these needless tragedies hit close and becomes personal?

Imagine...your life is forever changed.

Yet for those of us who are four, five or six degrees away from that unforgiving pain, what is our reaction? There must be an imperative to honor those lost and those grieving through honor and action.

Thank you, Coastal View News, for your excellent coverage, not only about the loss of a wonderful young man to horrific gun violence, but for the information you provided to your readers about the extent of gun violence in America.

The constant reality of death by gun is a message: We are all affected by gun violence. This is not a political problem, but a public health and safety problem.

Tragically, toll of death by gun has risen to over 38,000. Why? The lethality of today’s firearms has increased, as easy accessibility has also increased. Forty percent of guns sold do not go through background checks. Worse yet, the most popular firearm is now a semiautomatic, which shoots

Obituaries

George A. Middleton (Major, USAF Retired) 7/23/1920 – 11/4/2018

George A. Middleton passed away unexpectedly but peacefully on November 4, 2018 at the age of 98. He was surrounded by the love and prayers of his family and friends. He began his life’s journey on July 20,1923 in Snohomish Washington. Born to Lillie May (Humphries) and George Alexander Middleton, he was the youngest child and only boy, and completely spoiled by his three older sisters.

As a young man, George lived in Pasadena, California where he met his future bride Madelyn (Marny) Munn from Carpinteria. He volunteered for the US Army Air Corps in 1942 with hopes of becoming a pilot. George and Madelyn were engaged on Valentine’s Day 1943 and married in Corsicana, Texas June 26, 1943, where he was completing flight school. He received his wings and promotion to second lieutenant as a fighter pilot in December 1943. The following May he boarded a liberty ship to England where he was assigned to the 352nd Fighter Group, 328th Fighter Squadron based in Bodney, England. After a short time he was assigned his own plane: a P51D Mustang, nicknamed Worra Bird, which he flew throughout the duration of the war. His first mission was on D-Day, June 6, 1944, as part of a wall of fighter aircraft to shield invading ground forces from attack. He continued to provide ground support days after the invasion, until moving on to provide escort for B-24 bombers. He wrote in his diary on July 21: “Munich. Winds aloft change on return and blew us out over the North Sea. No radio contact. In sight of land but ready to bail out. Landed at RAF field out of gas. Lost seven planes and three pilots.”

He flew 85 missions, always praising his ground crew for keeping his plane well-maintained and ready to fly. When asked about flying so many missions he would say “I was flying. I was getting a job done. There was never any real stress.” He was honored for his service with the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Air Medal, as well as several campaign ribbons and medals including the Korean Service Medal, WWII European/ African Campaign, and WWII Victory Medal.

After the war George wanted to continue his service and re-entered the Air Force in 1947. He was stationed in Japan, at NORAD and AF bases around the country until he retired in 1963 as a Major. After his military retirement, he settled in Carpinteria in 1964 with Marny and their three children: Michael,

Cathy and Margie. He worked for General Telephone (now Verizon) until his retirement in 1983. He enjoyed a long, happy retirement with Marny, celebrating 73 years of marriage in 2016. They traveled around the country many times and overseas to Armenia and Russia to visit their daughter Cathy and her family. He worked hard to provide a loving, safe home for Marny and his children and their friends. He enjoyed reading and discussing mysteries and historical novels which continued throughout his life. He was truly a gentleman, kind and humble, but above all else a patriot and hero who loved his country and family unconditionally.

George was predeceased by Marny in 2016 and his son Michael in 2012. He is survived by his devoted daughters: Cathy and her husband Ed Kulakowski, and Margie. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren: Bryan Middleton and his wife Carin, Tanya Menoni and her husband Alec, and Chris Kulakowski and his wife Jennifer. His legacy also lives on in his great-grandchildren: Michael, Matthew, Rebecca, and Ripley Middleton; Liam and Isla Menoni; Landon, Fiona, and his newest great-granddaughter, Genevieve Kulakowski. Blue skies forever, Dad/PopPop/Gramps.

Over the years, George had many devoted caregivers; none more so than his daughter Margie, who dedicated herself over the last two years to help take care of him. We offer special thanks to his other caregivers: Luis, Rosaleen, Camilla, and Dusty for their love and support.

We would also like to thank the nurses and staff at Cottage Hospital especially Spencer (SICU) and Dr. Eric Trautwein; doctors and staff at Sansum Clinic, especially Dr. Victoria, Laura and Cheyenne; and also Dr. John Marsh, Marilyn and Joyce. You were instrumental in helping him continue to thrive and enjoy his long, healthy retirement.

George will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date. In lieu of flowers, he would be pleased if you donated to Paralyzed Veterans of America, Wounded Warriors, or Fisher House in his memory.

Sylvia Jimenez 2/15/1943 – 11/16/2018

Sylvia Jimenez of Carpinteria passed peacefully Nov. 16, 2018. She lived 75 joyful and happy years.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her sister Margrette Escamilla. Sylvia is survived by her husband Frederick Jimenez Sr., her two sons Raymond Jimenez (Trisha Jimenez), Frederick Jimenez Jr. (Yvonne Jimenez), her mother Josephine Villages, her brother Tony Villages (Aleyda), her five grandchildren Jessica Jimenez, Frederick Jimenez III, Raymond Jimenez Jr., Anthony Jimenez and Joseph Anthony Jimenez.

Sylvia was born on Feb. 15, 1943, in Santa Barbara, California. She was raised in Carpinteria by her mother Josephine and grew up with her brother Tony and her sister Margaret. Her mother loved her so very much, their bond was indescribable, a bond a mother and daughter only dream of, but they had it and was never going to change.

Sylvia carried on a quality that her mother instilled, to be there for her family that she loved being with every single day of her life.

Sylvia was raised in Carpinteria and lived there her whole life. She graduated from Carpinteria High School in 1961.

She then got married on Aug. 24, 1963 to Frederick Jimenez Sr. Sylvia worked many jobs that she enjoyed and loved doing because of the qualities that were instilled in her growing up. She worked at the Carpinteria Unified School District, Jostens and Gallup and Stripling Orchids. Sylvia’s main passion was her family. Raising her sons and giving them the tools to make the world their own and always chase after their dreams was something she always wanted her sons to do with their lives.

Sylvia enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking for her family, babysitting and

spending time with all her grandchildren, camping (and when camping, cooking above an open fire), watching the Dodgers on TV and cheering them on from her seat, and dancing and having music go throughout the house during holidays or any normal day. She had many friends near and far that she was always happy to see. She was the true definition of what a happy and sweet soul should be on this earth. She always had a smile on her face that lit up any room and made anyone that was having a bad day turn it around to be happy with the smile of hers.

Sylvia lived a fun and happy life where she left a legacy in her two sons and all her grandchildren.

Sylvia was the best mother to her children. She showed the love she had for them, and the care, ever since they were born and showed it till her last days. She was an amazing wife, always being there for her husband. Bad or good days they were always laughing about something and enjoying their company together because they found true love between themselves and their love kept on growing into something beautiful. She was the best grandmother any grandkid can ask for in their lives. She was always there for them whenever they needed her, and protected them from any harm in this world and believed in them and all the dreams they had. From her husband, her two sons and her grandchildren the love they had for her was something you find once in a lifetime because Sylvia was a true gift to this world and a once in a lifetime person that can never be compared to anyone.

She had the strength to fight through anything that was thrown at her life and she fought till her last days. She was an example for everyone she encountered and the example of always being happy, laughing, being there for anyone, and simply enjoying life that will live through her husband, sons and grandchildren till the end of time. She will be missed and loved dearly, but never forgotten by her family.

The confusing world of water quality Cvn

Carpinteria’s water resources examined Part 3 of 3

If you have read this column for any amount of time, you may know that one of the things I work on is improving surface water quality. I won’t get into all the details of that—that is, on its own, a lengthy and uninteresting explanation.

One way to track improvements in surface water quality is by sampling.

There are a lot of common misconceptions when it comes to water quality.

Environmental water quality, the area I work in, refers to surface water; streams, lakes, rivers and oceans. Monitoring environmental water quality is very different from monitoring drinking water.

Drinking water standards follow very strict protocol and are monitored very closely. Surface water quality on the other hand can be monitored by grab samples, continuous flow, even visual. Some monitoring is done by volunteers using field sampling kits that give you information about the state of the environment in that moment—things like how much oxygen is in the water, or the temperature, which are instantaneous results and the most accurate because they are taken while the water is at equilibrium with its surroundings. More complex sampling involves taking grab samples that are sent off to a lab for testing. Water quality standards have a lot of variation due to the local environment, ecosystem, and intended use.

If you were to just look at the results of lab analyzed samples it can be difficult to interpret unless you have the background knowledge about constituents (the things you are testing for), what the thresholds are for each one, and how they are measured. When doing more in-depth lab analysis, there are protocols that have to be followed to make sure your sample is preserved and transported properly for the most accurate result. This probably all sounds rather boring, but I can tell you sampling during a storm at 3 a.m. is anything but boring. For safety reasons most sampling takes place during the day. Safety is always the most important thing when considering environmental water quality sampling.

Sampling for storm runoff is different from the sampling that is done for ocean water quality reports, and both of those are different from soil sampling protocols.

This is necessary because a lot of things that we are looking for (the constituents) have different standards based on type of sample (soil vs fresh water vs salt water). There are also different detection levels for everything which means that one thing you are looking for could show up in the parts per million while another shows up in the parts per billion.

indicates the presence, not the source.

Have I lost you yet? I could go into great detail on how different types of things are sampled for but for now I will leave it at water quality sampling can be a very complex science.

And now for how this relates to how our watersheds function. When we are taking a sample during a storm to analyze what is in the runoff from our environment, we don’t sample in the creeks; instead, we look for places to sample that give us a good representation of the surrounding area before that water flows into a local waterbody. This is because as water flows through the watershed it can pick up sediments and other things that would distort the results.

When we are sampling sediments to analyze what is coming through the watershed we are following a different set of sampling protocols. For example, after last winter’s debris flows the sediments that were being tested were following the same protocol set by the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board for residential soil sampling.

It is important to note that a lot of things that show up in samples are things that are naturally occurring in the environment. When interpreting sampling data, one has to consider the local geology and ecosystem. Hopefully, I didn’t confuse you more with this explanation. It is difficult to condense the complexities involved in environmental water quality into a short column, but there is some great information available at organizations like the U.S. Geological Survey, the Environmental Protection Agency and the State Water Resources Control Board, if you are interested in learning more.

Careers in the water industry

In Southern California, water agencies face incredible pressures such as water shortages and water supply management; however, nationally there are several pressures facing the industry as a whole.

One of these challenges is finding technically qualified individuals to maintain water distribution systems and water treatment facilities to comply with strict water quality regulations set by the Environmental Protection Agency and the State Department of Drinking Water. During the first week of October, Water Professionals Appreciation Week showcased the important role that water professionals play in providing water, wastewater and recycled water throughout the state.

A quick scroll through #CAWaterWeek posts on social media will show you just a few of the dedicated men and women that work behind the scenes to provide these services. I want to acknowledge how critical these men and women are to making our water systems safe and reliable. I also want to thank them for their dedication and professionalism.

California’s water industry provides a variety of job opportunities. Engineers, Accountants, Water Resource Managers, GIS Technicians, Clerks, Customer Service Technicians, Water Conservation Specialists, Backflow Specialists, and Water Treatment and Distribution Operators are just a few of the job titles that this sector employs to provide you with safe and reliable water each day.

According to CA Water Jobs, California employs 6,000 new water professionals each year. Although some of these jobs do require college degrees or professional certificates, many positions only require a high school diploma or GED, good mechanical abilities, basic math skills, and the ability to understand new drinking water standards and technologies. Water Treatment and Distribution Operators are two examples of water careers that do not require a four-year college degree and provide the opportunity to earn a good living while serving your community. These positions provide room for advancement as you gain work experience and obtain certifications that are recognized throughout the state and reciprocated throughout the country.

Treatment and Distribution departments work collectively to ensure safe and reliable drinking water. Water Treatment Operators are tasked with treating and testing water from rivers, lakes, reservoirs and underground aquifers to ensure it is safe to drink. In the Carpinteria Valley, the water that is treated and delivered comes from Lake Cachuma, the District’s wells, and the State Water Project. Treatment Operators are responsible for monitoring and repairing treatment and production equipment, adding chemicals to disinfect water, analyzing treatment performance, managing system

The water industry offers stable jobs that cover many disciplines. Are you looking to become a part of the industry? pressure, and monitoring and analyzing water quality throughout the service area. Distribution Operators, on the other hand, focus on water reliability. They maintain distribution equipment such as pipes, valves, services and hydrants. They are responsible for laying pipelines, making water-line taps, and installing water services, hydrants and valves. With 75 miles of pipeline in the Carpinteria Valley installed over the last 77 years, our Distribution Operators stay very busy.

Entry-level jobs in these departments do not require certification, but to advance, State certifications would be required.

Obtaining your Water Treatment Operator 1 (T1) or Distribution Operator 1 (D1) certifications through the California Water Resources Control Board can make you a more qualified candidate for a job in the water industry or help you move up to a more advanced position. To obtain a T1 or D1 certificate, the only requirements are proof of your high-school diploma or GED and an understanding of the duties, processes and standards that apply to California water purveyors. Passing these tests demonstrates to the agency that you have basic understanding of the responsibilities associated with the job. Once you take a specialized training course, you are eligible to take the level 2 certification exams and after you work in one of these departments for a year, you are able to take the level 3 certification exams. In California, with more on-the-job experience you can test up to a Treatment Operator 5 (T5) and Distribution Operator 5 (D5) certification. Many employees with high certifications are qualified to fulfil management positions later in their career.

the summerland shore f r a n d av i s Smoke from the Camp Fire was just beginning to bloom when I started down to the Sacramento Valley from Sierra County—a small gray fist of smoke at first, turning brown as the fire built.

We’d seen smoke all week. Signs along Highway 89 announced smoke due to controlled burns. (Who says the state’s not doing forest management?)

My girlfriend Jill and I were visiting a hot springs resort at the edge of Sierra Valley. It was not your typical resort, but a rustic mix of cowboy and New Age. “Some crystally stuff thrown in,” was how Jill described it. Perfect reminder of her hippie days.

Sierra Valley is the largest valley in the Sierra, and the air there was briskly cold and clear for the first couple of days.

I loved watching the rising sun thrust rays across the valley’s dry yellow grass, gradually enveloping the lodge’s wide porch—time measured by the sun’s movement, so much more satisfying than a clock. Then long brown fingers of smoke smudged the blue sky across the valley.

More controlled burns, we heard.

We’d come for a break, to renew old friendship and melt troubles and fatigue away with hot water and massages. Jill lives on a big spread in El Dorado County and does hard work tending horses, so she needed those hot soaks. I’m now calling myself the Valley Fever girl, since my lungs still host that fungal infection, so I was hoping the change in altitude and attitude would do me good.

Reconnecting with and observing nature did as much, or more good, than the

soaks and body work. What stayed with me: an antlered buck ambling across the gravel road, the bumps and washboard feel of that road, a sun-struck yellow willow full of tiny birds, the sun turning pine needles into tiny icicles of light, rock-hopping squirrels, their full cheeks puffed out like mumps, small streams in the grassland, ice prickling the edges.

And the mountains’ complete silence.

Passing Truckee on the way back, we climbed over Donner Pass. Along Highway 80 they were making snow, big blasts of white powder covering a hillside, ski lifts standing out like black cyphers. It was fairly warm, in the 50s, so it seemed fruitless. My brother, who lives in Fair Oaks, told me night-time cold would freeze the white stuff and make a good base. Some real snow would help, though.

Soccer games for my brother’s grandkids were called off. People were wearing masks. My brother drove me to the airport through brown smoke so choking and dense you couldn’t see very far.

The airbus from LAX took I-5 to skirt closed 101 and the Woolsey Fire. I got a taste and smell of fires both north and south, along with the televised horror.

Fire lessons

“Teams of coroners” and “a dozen cadaver-sniffing dogs” are not phrases you want to hear. Or “Paradise is gone.”

We feel so helpless in the face of these evolving tragedies. We know that extraordinary heat (the planet has warmed a whole degree Fahrenheit in my lifetime), prolonged drought and parched hillsides and trees, combined with other factors—Santa Ana winds in the south, Diablo winds in the north—are a renewing recipe for disaster.

Paradise, which usually gets five inches of rain by now, got none. The pines in and around town were tinder-dry. It was not a planned community, it was a sprawl, narrow winding roads threading through trees. Far too many couldn’t get out in time. But communities in the path of the Woolsey Fire were planned, good roads in and out.

areas—pretty places, up canyons, nestled among trees, on wooded hillsides. According to records, previous fires had burned through nearly 50 percent of Butte County, where Paradise is. Fire has long been a regular visitor to California’s woodlands.

Last summer California had its highest recorded July temperature ever. The extreme heat caused by climate change will continue to rise. And precipitation patterns are changing, here in California, less rain, less snow.

We can operate in the now, go with the new abnormal, install air conditioning and plant drought-tolerant yards.

But we humans, with our addiction to carbon-stoking petroleum, have done this to ourselves and our planet. While the path under our feet gets warmer and warmer, we plunge on, ignoring Mother Nature’s warnings, refusing to abandon our fossil fuel addiction.

Each of us can do our small part to lower our carbon footprints. We can support green energy projects. Recently, Ventura County adopted a community choice energy plan, allowing every consumer to select what kind of energy powers their homes. If they don’t make a choice, the fallback will be 100 percent renewable energy—wind, solar and hydro.

In Santa Barbara County, we can push for community choice as well. We can stand up against yet more oil extraction and fracking, a massive carbon producer.

Applications are now pending for 760 new wells in our county that would triple onshore oil production and drill through the groundwater aquifer that supplies

drinking water for north county.

This week the Metropolitan Transit District board considered setting a goal of 100 percent electric buses by 2030. The decision was too late for my deadline, but I expect it passed. Riding buses and driving cars powered by electricity are planet saving measures available to all of us. We can’t let our planet and our children’s futures go up in smoke without a fight.

I loved last month’s artisan market in the Summerland post office parking lot.

It was a perfect festive event at a time when we need to stoke our festive feelings: Music, many booths, everything from antiques to jewelry to art, food and drink and more. The November market, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., will feature 30-40 vendors, music by DJ Jack Krummer and fresh produce from Harvest Moon of Carpinteria.

One good thing: Gratitude on this day of thanks giving—for warm, close family and friends, shared meals and pumpkin pie, belly laughs, sunshine and the big sea, November flowers, morning walks and dogs.

Locals send 1,500 postcards encouraging Democratic voter turnout

“A lot of people were feeling the need to become involved during this election cycle,” said Tara O’Reilly who helped to organize “postcard parties” in support of Democrat Katie Hill, who won her bid for the U.S. House of Representatives on Nov. 6, defeating Republican incumbent Steve Knight. At a Fed-Up Friday event, O’Reilly met a couple visiting from Santa Clarita who mentioned that they were involved in the Hill campaign. “We felt this was a race where our effort could make a difference,” O’Reilly said. “With the help of Carpinteria Indivisible we made the connection with the Democratic Alliance for Action (DAA), Santa Clarita which was organizing support for Hill.”

In September, at their first postcard party, O’Reilly and others handwrote 200 postcards encouraging registered Democrats to vote in the midterm elections. By November, the group had gathered a half dozen times, with turn-outs of six to 12 people, and they had written 1,500 postcards, each with their own message. The group supplied and applied stamps to the postcards, then delivered them to DAA to be addressed and mailed before election day.

“Our candidate won by a slim margin,” said O’Reilly. “We feel we made a difference.”

Christmas came early for the 188 nonprofits from Santa Barbara and Ventura counties that were awarded money by Montecito Bank & Trust at the 16th Annual Community Dividends Awards Luncheon on Nov. 19. Chairman and CEO Janet Garufis honored the late Michael Towbes, founder of MB&T and the Community Dividends program, by providing the meaning of philanthropos—the Greek root of the word philanthropy— love of mankind. This year, the bank has given $1 million to central coast nonprofits. Employees are also encouraged to provide service, and to date in 2018, 141 employees have volunteered 5,100 hours in board service, event support, financial literacy and other programs, to 152 different organizations.

are other reasons why you’re there.” He added that he looks forward to expanding extracurricular activities for students at Carpinteria Middle School, including some woodshop courses, design and technical classes, and coordinating with Carpinteria High School Principal Gerardo Cornejo to create programs that would “line up” with established pathway certificate programs at the high school, such as culinary arts and other disciplines.

Having grown up in Ojai and going through the public schools there, Briggs said that his family didn’t put a big emphasis on education, but after about five years of differing jobs and vocations after high school—“ski bum,” commercial fisherman, car salesman and martial arts among them—he went to Ventura College then transferred to UCSB where he majored in environmental studies and philosophy. Intending to pursue a career in environmental law, a two weeks teaching engagement changed his trajectory.

“It’s hard for teachers (when students misbehave) in a class with 25 or 35 other kids they have to teach,” Briggs acknowledged, but went on to say that simply assigning them punishments like detention “doesn’t work.”

At Hueneme High School, Briggs said, he would ask his colleagues who were having trouble with certain students if they knew anything about the kids. When a teacher builds relationships with their students, he said, the children then know someone is advocating for them. “A red flag (behaviorally) means something is happening,” Briggs noted. “When you dig deeper, you can get them extra support.” Briggs looks forward to leading CMS in part because “with middle schoolers the cement is still wet in their brains” he said.

Our new building at 865 Linden Avenue will open in 2019, and we’re thankful for all the donors and volunteers, including architects, engineers, electricians, contractors and subcontractors who are bringing this project to life.

We’ll have two wonderful art galleries, a classy new serving kitchen, workshop/ studio space, a ceramics yard, office space, and a beautifully landscaped courtyard for concerts, camps, and community events. Our new ADA-compliant bathrooms will knock your socks off, and we’ll still have our cute little cottage in the back.

Wildcats defeat Warriors in season opener

New Carpinteria High School girls basketball coach Benti De La Cruz and his team made their home debut last Friday (Nov. 16) against longtime Warrior coach Dan Mercer and his Villanova Prep squad. Mercer who amassed 247 wins during his 19 years as the Carpinteria girls basketball coach, notched another one at Warriors Gym, as the Wildcats spoiled the home team’s opener in convincing fashion with a 63-21 victory.

Villanova Prep improves to 2-0 on the year, while Carpinteria falls to 0-1.

The visitors got off to a quick start, scoring the game’s first eight points. The Warriors finally got on the board with a little under five minutes left in the first quarter when Michelle Alpizar fed Kaela Kelly for two points to make it 8-2. The Wildcats Madison Fabbian responded quickly with a rebound and score for two points of her own, as Carpinteria trailed 10-2. With a little under three minutes left, Sallury Hernandez powered a lay-in underneath for the Warriors to make it 10-4.

But, that was as close as Carpinteria got, as Villanova Prep rattled off the next six points to take a 16-4 lead by the end of the first. Things didn’t get much better for the Warriors in the second, as Grace Wells took a defensive rebound, dribbled nearly the length of the floor for a lay-up, and a 22-4 lead. Meanwhile, the Warriors were unable to make shots, and the lead grew to 31-4. “The first half was definitely emotional for them (Carpinteria), they missed a lot of shots because they were nervous,” explained De La Cruz whose roster has only four returning players from last season.

and Alexa Silva’s three-pointer helped get the team into double digits as they trailed 35-11 at halftime. Finishing the game with eight points, Kelley was the Warriors leading scorer. “I really liked their effort, they’re young, so, they definitely got to feel what a real game is like … what was good was that throughout the game, they got better,” said De La Cruz. In the second half, the trio of Fabbian, Wells and Mackenzie Hicks proved to be too much for Carpinteria.

Fabbian knocked down 20 points, Hicks had 14 to go along with 14 rebounds, and Wells had 12. Coral Jae also pitched in two points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Sallury Hernandez ended up with four points for the Warriors.

“It felt really unique (to be on the visitor’s bench), it was fun to be back because I have a lot of fond memories from my days here in Carp,” said Mercer of his successful homecoming. The Wildcats will once again compete in the Frontier League against the likes of Bishop Diego, La Reina, Providence and Thacher. Meanwhile, Carpinteria will play in the new Citrus Coast League against Fillmore, Hueneme, Malibu, Nordhoff and Santa Paula. “I feel for Coach De La Cruz because he inherited a program basically in the deep rebuilding stages,” said Mercer. “I really think that … if he’s patient, he can rebuild this program,” added the veteran coach now in his second season at Villanova Prep.

The Warriors will next host the Carpinteria Tourney beginning Nov. 29 through Dec. 1 with a full slate of action each day from 2:30 to 7 p.m.

The Warriors start 0-0-1 overall, and have yet to play a game in the new Citrus Coast League with their next game being a non-league, home match at Valley Memorial Stadium against Dos Pueblos on Nov. 27 at 6 p.m.

November 14 - The Carpinteria High School boys basketball team had their opening game of the season against Foothill Tech, dropping the game to the Dragons by a score of 59-52. Carpinteria was led by junior Ian Reed who had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds, and freshman Dylan O’Neil who finished with 14 points. The Warriors trailed by as many as 16 points during one point in the first half; but whittled the lead down to three by the end of the third quarter. “The fourth quarter went back and forth, but we could never get the game tied,” said first-year Carpinteria coach Corey Adam. Foothill Tech made four free throws in the last 15 seconds to secure the win.

November 19 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team had one qualifier for the CIF Sectionals held on the campus tennis courts and Cate School (two of five Sectional sites in Southern California), the doubles team of Amy Perez/Karla Marin.

Unfortunately, they were eliminated in the first round, falling to the Ventura team of Nicole Escamillo/Nella Krishnasamy, 6-1, 6-1. “Amy/Karla, who finished second in the Citrus Coast League tournament a few weeks ago, played well especially in the second set,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. However, the Cougar duo, who were named the Pacific View League MVPs this season, prevailed. “Both girls are seniors and were new to tennis when they started three years ago, but became such great competitors; and more importantly, are just sensational leaders and great young women in general,” explained Bryant of his two Warrior competitors.

November 15 - The Cate School boys basketball team hosted Garden Street Academy, walking off the court with a 71-34 win. Cate was led by junior Ethan Ng who finished with 19 points and five steals. Sophomore Tega Umukoro tallied six assists and six rebounds.

“Returner Khadim Pouye pulled down eight rebounds as he shakes off the football rust,” said Cate coach Andy Gil of his junior who joined the squad after playing on the Rams football team a few days earlier. Aiden Robles led the visiting Comets with 11 points. “We have a lot of new faces playing varsity this year and it was fun to see the young guys get their feet wet,” said Gil. The Cate Rams continue their season Nov. 30 at Pilibos; and then December fourth, the Rams host crosstown foe Carpinteria at 5:30 p.m. at Cate’s Sprague Gymnasium.

The Carpinteria Lions Club will present the ninth annual Festival of Trees, beginning on Friday, Nov. 23, and fri. running through Dec. 8, daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. at 700 Linden Ave. Local businesses and non-profits present themed Christmas trees that will be raffled at noon on Sunday, Dec. 9.

Museum of History Holiday Arts and Crafts Faire

Eighty-five California artisans will have their wares for sale at the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History’s 38th Annual Holiday Faire on Saturday, Nov. 24, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at 956 Maple Ave. Some of the unique gifts offered for sale include antique silverware wind chimes, country crafts, fine custom jewelry, crochet and knitted hats and scarves, fused and stained glass art, succulent dish gardens, baby and children’s gifts, natural soaps and bath oils, Christmas ornaments, decorations and wreaths. CVN makes yards in Boulder

Carpinteria and the Coastal View News were well represented in Boulder, Colorado when Carpinteria native, number 57 Connor Kelsey’s family and friends came to watch him play with the Oregon State Beavers against Colorado University.

The Beavers pulled off a last-minute win in overtime. Attending the game were Jeanne, Chris and Zoe Kelsey, Candi Burquez, Henry and Raymond Gonzales, and former Carpinterians, Aaron and Casey Gonzales with their kids Asher and Tate, along with Janine Harner. It was an exciting game since it was the first win on the road for the Beavers in four years—go Beavs!

This summer Ashley Muenstermann, her husband John Knecht and their boys, seven-year-old Ashton and five-year-old Dylan Knecht, traveled to Southern Iceland and visited Sólheimajökull glacier, which is located between two volcanoes.

While on the island, they also visited the Blue Lagoon (a geothermal beach), Skogafoss waterfall and Thingvellir National Park, where they stood at the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Sleeping was a bit challenging as it was still bright as day at midnight. The family enjoyed exploring both the city of Rekjavik as well as the countryside, where they spent time with some beautiful Icelandic horses.
