Seal Watch to host orientation

For over 20 years, Carpinteria seals have been able to rest easy in their rookery near Casitas Pier during the pupping season thanks to Carpinteria Seal Watch. Volunteers from the organization take two-hour shifts at a bluff-top perch where they educate visitors about the harbor seals on the beach below and keep the animals safe from disturbances that could separate young pups from their mothers. Carpinteria nonprofits among honorees at MB&T luncheon

In its annual act of mega-generosity, Montecito Bank & Trust awarded $1 million to area nonprofits at its Community Dividends awards luncheon on Nov. 20. Now in its 15th year, the giving program, which has granted a total of $15 million to local Santa Barbara and Ventura County nonprofits, awarded grant checks to 184 nonprofits.

This year’s program included an emotional video tribute to the father of Community Dividends, Michael Towbes, the bank’s late founder and local philanthropist. Towbes used to say of the Dividends, “We do this because we recognize and support the invaluable role your nonprofits play in enhancing the quality of life for all segments of our society. We do this to encourage other organizations to follow in our footsteps.

We do this to encourage our employees to volunteer to support these worthy organizations. We do this because we think it’s the right thing to do.”

Laptop thief strikes Canalino School

Twenty-one laptops and tablets were stolen from Canalino School classrooms last weekend. According to Deputy Bryan Dickey of the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department, the thief likely entered through an unlocked window in the kindergarten wing of the school and loaded the $6,000-worth of electronic devices into an emergency kit backpack that was also found missing. A kindergarten teacher who went into her classroom midday Sunday, Nov. 26 discovered that the crime had taken place.

Ceremony will honor vets at cemetery

Veterans laid to rest will be honored by Wreaths Across America on Saturday, Dec. 16 at 9 a.m. at the Carpinteria Cemetery, 1501 Cravens Lane. The local cemetery is one of 1,200 locations around the nation where a balsam fir wreath will be placed at the headstone of every veteran buried there. The goal is to spread patriotism and commemoration for the sacrifices made for the United States of America.

Cannabis meetings scheduled

As the state prepares to green light recreational cannabis sales, Santa Barbara County is working to establish its own regulations on growing and selling the substance that Californians voted to legalize in 2016. On Wednesday, Dec. 6, the Santa Barbara County Planning Commission will hear an update on the Cannabis Land Use Ordinance Amendments and Licensing Program. The meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 9 a.m. in Room 17 of the Planning Commission Hearing Room, 123 E. Anapamu Street. Public comments should be emailed to dvillalo@countyofsb. org by Monday, Dec. 4. The Board of Supervisors will hold a special board meeting regarding cannabis on Thursday, Dec. 14, at 10 a.m. in the County Board Hearing Room, 105 E. Anapamu Street. Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District firefighters surprise Forrest Holt and his family with a slew of gifts on Nov. 18.

Forrest fire: Holidays brighten for sick boy and family

Daily life isn’t easy for Forrest holt, but thanks to a community fundraiser coordinated by local firefighters, the 4-year-old Carpinteria boy who suffers from a life-threatening vascular disease enjoyed a generous dose of merry and bright to start his holiday season. Months ago, the Carpinteria-summerland Fire protection District firefighters union decided to pull the community together to raise funds for Forrest, who was born with a vascular malformation in his leg and has had to undergo blood transfusions, dialysis and numerous surgeries.

The firefighters sought to make life more manageable not just for little Forrest, but also his caregiver mother tonia Reynolds and his 8-year-old brother Carter. to benefit the family, firefighters sold t-shirts at the 2017 California avocado Festival and collected donations in firefighting boots left at a few local businesses. “the community support far exceeded anything we could ever ask for,” said organizer logan Foster. “in fact, a special order of shirts had to be placed in the middle of the festival to keep up with the community’s demand to support one of its own. by the end of the weekend, over $4,000 was raised, nearly double what was anticipated.” next, local businesses stepped up to stretch the dollars raised. serigraph screen printing, Gonzo Cycles, albertsons, Colson’s towing, Risdon’s 76, Jack’s bistro and bagels and lucky llama Coffee shop all supported the effort, and on Nov. 18 firefighters hosted the Holt family at the Walnut Avenue fire station and awarded them with groceries, fuel

Let fossil fuels go the way of the dinosaurs

I raise a hand in support of Mr. Jougla’s letter last week proposing photovoltaic (PV) solar panels on rooftops. Everyone from individuals to governments can do even more towards a renewable energy future. The World Economic Forum recently reported renewable energy is now cheaper or at the same price as fossil fuel in over 30 countries, and this economic shift is a “tipping point” that could make fighting climate change into a profitable form of business for energy companies.

So why not install solar on residential and commercial rooftops?

Last week, Norway announced plans divest $900 billion in capital from its sovereign wealth fund in order to reduce national coal investments, while also considering divestment from oil and gas.

To date, this is the largest fossil fuel divestment, affecting 122 companies across the world, leading the fast-growing and UNbacked climate change campaign.

In September, Santa Barbara City Council agreed to divest $2.5 million from institutions financing the Dakota Access Pipeline, a 1,172-mile-long underground oil transportation system that has been opposed by Native American and environmental groups. Additionally, the council voted to support a so-called socially responsible investment policy that discourages investment in entities that manufacture, distribute or provide financing for tobacco products, weapons,

military systems, nuclear power and fossil fuels.

Other U.S. cities, including Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Bellingham, Raleigh, Albuquerque, Davis, Santa Monica and even Berlin, are divesting over $4.3 billion; Seattle divested about $3 billion from financial institutions that fund the fossil fuel industry. Individuals have divested over $85 million.

Putting all sandcastle builders to shame, Mac Brown moves tons and tons of sand to construct the annual berm at the city beach. The wall of sand protects city property and beachfront homes from winter storms and high tides—and is paid for by the homeowners and the city.

Just as the clocks turned to start the day we call Thanksgiving our husband, dad and friend, Bert Goebel left this beautiful world. Born and raised in Cold Spring, Minn. he attended Cold Spring Elementary and High Schools, where he played football and basketball. After graduation, Bert enlisted in the Army, where he proudly served his country during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge Bert returned to Minnesota and worked for Archer Daniels Milling Company. He married his wife Arlene and together they welcomed their first three children, Dennis, Gary and Kathy, to this world. When the Milling Company closed its gates, Bert moved his family to Santa Barbara, Calif. where he worked for Marymount School and where their son Jimmy completed the family. The family settled in the beautiful beach town of Carpinteria where Bert worked for Carpinteria Unified School District for 20 years. Hired as a custodian, he worked his way up to school bus driver and retired as a warehouseman. In 2003 Bert, Arlene and Kathy moved to Visalia to be closer to family.

Bert was a long-time member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, where he served as governor and district president. Bert was a devoted member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Carpinteria and was a tireless volunteer for the annual church carnival. In his younger years he enjoyed coaching his sons Little League baseball teams and served as a Cub Scout Leader.

Bert is preceded in death by his son James, his parents Ben and Mayme, his sister Dolores, brothers Ralph, Jerry, Ruby and Art. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Arlene, his son Dennis and wife Anja, his favorite daughter Kathy, all of Visalia, Calif. and son Gary of Humble, Texas.

The only remaining sibling is his sister Bernice from Cold Spring, Minn.

A viewing was held at Salser and Dillard in Visalia, Calif. on Wednesday, Nov. 29 from 5 to 7 p.m., with a rosary at 6:30 p.m.

The graveside service will take place on Thursday, Nov. 30 at noon at Carpinteria Cemetery on Cravens Lane in Carpinteria, Calif. Condolences may be left by logging onto www.salseranddillard.com

Robert Richard Lieberknecht, Sr. 5/14/1930 – 11/20/2017

Robert “Bob” Lieberknecht, Sr. of Carpinteria, Calif., passed away on Nov. 20, 2017. He was born May 14, 1930 in Letts, Iowa. In 1934, Bob moved with his parents Maude and Max Lieberknecht, sister Peggy and brother Jim, to Los Angeles, Calif. He married Joan Martin in 1951, and moved with Joan and sons Robert, Jr. and John to Santa Barbara in 1963, and then to Carpinteria in 1964.

Bob graduated with the class of 1949 from L.A. Poly. He was employed as District General Manager for the Carpinteria County Water District for 31 years, retiring in 1995, and then served on its Board of Directors for an additional 19 years.

While serving as the water district’s manager he was appointed by Governors Wilson and Dukemajian to serve on the Regional Water Quality Board in Sacramento. Other water agencies on which he served were Central Coast Water Agency, Cachuma Operation & Maintenance, S.B. County Special Districts Assn. and the American Water Works Assn. He was an active member of the Carpinteria Lions Club for 54 years and was named Carpinterian of the Year 2000 by the Carpinteria Chamber of Commerce. Bob was recognized for his leadership in a variety of charities, including the American Cancer Society, the Braille Institute, the United Way and the American Heart Assn. He and his wife, Pat, known as the clowns, Splish and Splash, were local volunteer clowns donating their services for 14 years to various nonprofit agencies.

They learned their craft for clowning by attending several conferences for clowns in Laughlin, Nev. Robert was predeceased by his wife Joan in 1980, his sister Peggy in 2010, and his son Robert, Jr. in 2011.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Patricia, his brother Jim, his son, John, and his grandchildren, Lindsey Lieberknecht, and Michael, Mason and Madison Lieberknecht. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Gary, Mike, Gina, Lisa and Glenn Pitassi, and 18 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services for Bob will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 11:30 a.m., followed by a celebration of Bob’s life at the Carpinteria Lions Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bob Lieberknecht’s honor to the Carpinteria Lions Club, P.O. Box 191, Carpinteria, CA 93014.

The play Auntie Mame, by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. The American Scandinavian Foundation of Santa Barbara will hold its annual Christmas Dinner & Santa Lucia Pageant on Saturday, Dec. 2 starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Santa Barbara Club, 1105 Chapala Street.

Scouts unload Christmas cheer

For over 50 years, Carpinteria Boy Scouts have been stocking local homes with fragrant and fresh Christmas trees—and the tradition continues this year. Last Saturday morning, an army of scouts greeted two semi-truck loads of trees from Oregon at the intersection of Holly and Carpinteria avenues. The corner buzzed with activity as scouts and their families unloaded hundreds of trees in no time flat. Now Douglas, Noble, Nordmann and Turkish Christmas trees are finding their way into Carpinteria homes. The lot is open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday from 3 to 8:30 p.m., and Friday from noon to 8:30 p.m.

Carp and Santa Ynez lock horns, 1-1

The Carpinteria High School boys soccer team debuted against Santa Ynez on Nov. 21, playing to a 1-1 tie at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium. Last season, the two schools clashed in Santa Ynez in the early season and ended with an identical score. “I think it (the tie) was good for this team. There are a lot of new players involved, a couple of players that came from JV,” said Warrior coach Leo Quintero.

The two squads battled it out on an unseasonably warm evening in Santa Ynez. Carpinteria’s Eddie Mendoza served up a long ball from midfield off a free kick. Vincent Gonzalez chased it down to head-flick the ball at the near post and past the Santa Ynez keeper in the 16th minute of the first half to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. They carried that lead into the second half.

Both teams saw opportunities, and the play went back and forth in the beginning of the second. Carpinteria’s Gabe Barajas made a long run in the Pirate zone but was unable to get a shot off.

Then Santa Ynez began putting the pressure on, dominating play at the Warrior end of the field. The Pirates’ Brian Moya blasted a shot on goal that rebounded back into the area. But when teammate Liam Pollenz’s follow-up effort sailed off the mark, Carpinteria still held a one-goal advantage. Senior goalkeepers Anthony Peña and Christian Estrada would combine for eight total saves for the Warriors.

Carpinteria, however, wouldn’t hold the lead for long. In the 70th minute, off a corner kick, Santa Ynez once again kept the ball alive in the box. Chris Tellez then blistered a shot into the back of the net to tie it at 1-1. Carpinteria High School Girls soccer

November 27 - The Carpinteria High School girls soccer team lost its non-league opener to La Reina at Cal Lutheran University, 5-2. The Warriors suffered their first injury of the game to offensive center-midfielder Alejandra Alvarez, who rolled her ankle. Aly Springer moved up from the back, and netted in the first official goal for the Warriors on a shot from 20 yards out. A little while later, Yvette Zamora put a ball away inside the 6 yard-line. Carpinteria then suffered a second injury to Zahea Hamadi who fell hard to the ground and hit her head. “We went down fairly early 1-0, on a turnover in our own box that (La Reina) quickly converted,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant.

November 28 – Carpinteria High School absorbed a 3-1 loss to Channel Islands in a non-league match that taught the Warriors some valuable lessons.

Coach Charles Bryant said that while the effort was there, his athletes showed some tactical and technical weaknesses against the strong Channel Islands squad.

Both teams went into halftime without a goal on the scoreboard. Bryant said, “We came out strong in the second half and scored fairly early on a great ball from Zahea Hamadi to Aly Springer who easily blasted it home from 10 yards away.” But Channel Islands took it from there, turning opportunities into three goals by the end of the game. Carpinteria is now 0-2 overall.

Tennis Team honored for academic success

The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team boasts an average grade point average of 4.2 and earned the honor of Academic All-League Team by having each player exceed the required 3.5 GPA to qualify. “We have had higher overall team GPAs before, especially 2013, 2014 and 2015, but we always had a player or possibly two players who did not qualify for the Academic All-League team,” said Warrior coach Charles Bryant. “To me, it is a huge accomplishment as (the athletes) have many things working against them: long practices, a lot of traveling, going out to eat after away matches (so getting back late), seniors working on college applications, scholarship applications, SBCC classes and many extra-curricular activities.” Most of the girls are involved in many high school clubs, and do a lot of community service outside of high school, making their academic excellence that much more impressive.

10U Orange Tigers wrap season undefeated

The Carpinteria AYSO 10U Orange Tigers enjoyed a successful undefeated regular season with their only loss coming at the hands of another local team, the Kiwis, in the playoffs two weeks ago. In the area playoffs, the Orange Tigers continued their winning ways with a 5-1 win over Ojai. They also earned a 3-3 draw against the Ventura B side. These results moved them past the pool stage, advancing them to the quarterfinals, where they took on the Ventura A side in the next round. The match remained scoreless until late in the third quarter when Ventura managed to put the ball into the back of the net. The Orange Tigers season ended with a tight, 1-0 loss to the Ventura A squad. Despite the loss, the team made a good run in the tournament.

14U Girls place second in championship

The Carpinteria Spirit of the AYSO returned from Camarillo following a November 18 and 19 tournament with a second-place finish. They opened the tournament with a 2-0 win against North Oxnard and a 4-1 win against Santa Barbara. The match against Santa Paula on Saturday evening resulted in a 2-0 win, which secured a spot in the semi-finals. On Sunday, the team went on to claim victory over the top-seeded Santa Barbara team in penalty kicks. Once again under the lights, the championship was taken by Ventura Number-one with a 1-1 draw, pushing the game into overtime and a penalty kick shootout eventually won by the squad just south.

“Over the course of 15 games, this dedicated team has found the back of the net with 44 goals scored and only four goals allowed,” said coaches Marc Medina and Michele Lounsbury. “They have been on a journey that has grown talent as well as friendships, and have worked very hard—both mentally and physically to prepare for the success they deserved at this tournament.”

The Carpinteria Spirit will compete in the AYSO Section 10 Championship Tournament on Feb. 17 and 18 in Bakersfield.

AYSO U12s get the gold

Carpinteria’s U12 Tigers claimed the championship in the Camarillo Area Playoffs last weekend. “I’m very proud of these girls!” said coach Pedro Casas. After winning seven straight games, losing two and finishing one draw in the regular season, the group of girls won their pool 3-0-0 in the playoffs. Claiming the victory in the semifinal game against one of a regional teams was tough and challenging, Casas said. “Our team played the championship game with confidence and perseverance that led to a 4-2 win over a tough Santa Barbara opponent,” said the coach. The team’s season has been extended to February when the girls will participate in the section championship games in Bakersfield.

Howard preschoolers enjoy Chumash games

Preschoolers from Howard make a trek across town—and across centuries.

On Nov. 16, Carpinteria State Beach Park Interpretive specialist Leanne Roth shared her radiant smile and knowledge of Chumash culture, history and Native American pastimes with Howard School Preschool students, who tossed pinecones through a rolling hoop, rolled tar-filled walnut shells in a game of walnut dice and chanted songs to welcome the rain accompanied by handmade clapper sticks and claves. Roth’s hands-on learning approach allows all students to develop meaningful connections in nature without any “screen” technology. “It’s simply the passion and knowledge of (Roth), the children and the earth,” said Howard School Preschool Director Monica Robarge. “Carpinteria is filled with a rich culture, history and lessons to teach on topics related to marine life, conservation, pioneering, botany, geology, recycling, native plants and animals—Roth’s appreciation for our coastal treasure is artistically shared in a mindful manner that creates an experience of a lifetime.” Carpinteria State Beach offers presentations during the weekends to locals and campers, along with weekly presentations to area organizations. Groups can request a presentation by calling 684-2811.

lovers. Succulent wreaths, mini succulent gardens or a succulent bouquet (that can then be planted into the garden) all make wonderful gifts.

Herbal wreaths: Herbs harvested fresh from your garden can be fashioned into wreaths or sprays to make lovely gifts for anyone. Rosemary, bay, thyme, marjoram, oregano, lemon verbena, lavender and sage all dry beautifully and can then be used in cooking or for just for the fragrance.

Herbed Salts: One of my favorite (and frequently requested) gifts is herbed salts.

Go crazy with your favorite combinations and pack them in decorative jars, a label of ingredients and suggested uses and you too will get requests for refills.

Gift Cards

Gift cards are a great way to ensure everyone on your list gets what they want for the holidays. I have a friend who accuses me of being lazy, but I would rather allow someone the freedom to get what they want rather than me trying to guess. I love gift cards and think everyone welcomes the chance for a mini shopping spree. Here are some of my favorites.

SB Axxess Card: If you know someone who doesn’t have an Axxess card, it makes a great gift! And it’s good all year and it’s a chance to support local businesses.

Nurseries: With bare root season on the horizon, a gift card to a favorite nursery is perfect for anyone who loves to get their hands in the dirt.

Famers Market Tokens: The Farmer’s Market sells tokens that are as good as cash at any of the many weekly markets.

Ribbon cutting launches Festival of Trees

The Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce officially opened this year’s Festival of Trees with a ribbon cutting on Nov. 27 at the Carpinteria Arts Center. The annual festival—a fundraiser coordinated by the Carpinteria Lions Club—showcases 21 uniquely decorated trees that are donated by local businesses and nonprofits along with a bundle of gifts. Each tree will be raffled off on Sunday, Dec. 10 after two weeks of ticket sales and community activities. The organizations benefiting from this year’s raffle ticket sales are Carpinteria Arts Center, Friends of the Carpinteria Library, Movies in the Park and Rancho Alegre Camp.

Carol Kutzner, former Spanish teacher at Carpinteria Middle School, traveled to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada with Teresa (Kutzner’s doctor friend in North Carolina), Susan Kean (a former CMS Spanish student) and Carol Patrick. “We had a short dogsled ride (fun), but most of all we were exceedingly fortunate to see quite a number of polar bears during our two days there. Brrr!”

A vacation in paradise with CVN

Joe and Marti Zicherman and Linda and Dean Starlin recently stayed at the Paradisus Esmeralda hotel in Playa del Carmen in the Yucatan Peninsula. They met Joe and Marti’s daughter Erin, husband Zuri and their two children, and spent most days relaxing either at the beach or at one of the hotel’s many pools. Feeling the need to explore, Marti, Dean, Erin, Zuri and their son Braylen ventured off to the Mayan oasis Xenotes, repelling into several cenotes (sink holes), zip lining and kayaking. Meanwhile, Linda and Joe stayed behind and thoroughly enjoyed their Coastal View News and the amenities of their all-inclusive hotel.
