Festival of Trees opens call for 2019 beneficiaries

The Carpinteria Lions Club is now accepting “Request for Funds” applications from community nonprofits to be recipients of their annual fundraising event, the Festival of Trees. Last year, the Lions earned $30,000 to give to local organizations. Nonprofits must submit their requests to Committee Chair Mike Dawson no later than Oct. 31.

On the last Friday of the month, KopSun LLC is facilitating “Coffee with a Cannabis Farmer,” from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at The Food Liaison. “This is an opportunity for the general public to meet with a local cannabis farmer and share concerns, kudos, suggestions, etc.” said Amy Orozco of KopSun. The one-hour meeting is limited to nine attendees. The farmer “hosts” the coffee and pastries.

Each month features a different farmer.

What do you want for your library?

Community input sought for future of Carpinteria Library

After nearly a decade of gloomy forecasts and grim budgetary news, Carpinteria Library’s future now appears bright with potential. New administrative models are being considered that would increase local control, and new funds are available to help maintain and enhance the vitality of the Carpinteria Library.

An important part of the library’s future is the community’s vision. Carpinteria Library serves as an information hub, a book lender, a cultural center and a welcoming destination for all members of the community. Decisionmakers are seeking input into what Carpinterians want for their library in years to come.

To that end, Santa Barbara County Supervisor Das Williams will hold a community meeting to discuss options for the library’s future on Tuesday, Oct. 15, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Carpinteria City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. Carpinteria Library is a branch in the Santa Barbara County Library System, which funds each library at a rate of $7.80 per resident. For decades, the county has

contracted with the city of Santa Barbara to administer the Carpinteria Library.

Though services have stayed flat, the fees imposed by the city of Santa Barbara to operate the Carpinteria Library have more than doubled in the last five years.

After significant study and with the support of Santa Barbara County, other branch libraries in situations similar to Carpinteria’s have changed their administrative contracts to gain more control over their budgets and services. The Goleta Library is no longer administered by the city of Santa Barbara. The city of Goleta now oversees that library, as well as the branch libraries in Buellton and Solvang.

In recent years, the county has increased its emergency funding of smaller branch libraries in the face of severe budget shortfalls, but the Carpinteria Library doors have remained open six days a week largely due to financial support from Friends of the Carpinteria Library and the city of Carpinteria.

increased nearly tenfold to $240,000.

This year, the city’s support accounts for 50 percent of the library budget, an increase made possible by voter approval of Measure X, which added 1.25 cents to the existing sales tax. As a consequence of this increased investment, City Council has formed an ad hoc committee to explore more-efficient models for operating the library.

Friends of the Library, meanwhile, has managed to increase its annual support for the library over the past five years from $56,000 to $75,000. The all-volunteer nonprofit organization raises funds mainly through its used bookstore, but also counts on the modest yearly dues from over 200 loyal memberships in the Friends. Before it became critical to fund basic operations, the group focused its li-

brary donations on enrichment programs, new books and computers, and library improvements—and hopes to return to that focus once the library’s financial future is secure.

New options for the future of Carpinteria Library will be explored at the meeting on Oct. 15 in an effort to bring the highest quality library services to the community.

Library users or potential library users should attend next week’s meeting to learn more about the library’s current status and to help shape the future of the library. As City Council member Fred Shaw has stated over the years, “The most important building in any town is its library.”

The meeting is open to everyone, children included. Refreshments and Spanish translation will be provided.

When dining out enriches education and stimulates the local economy

Eating out improves a child’s education. You won’t find that hypothesis in any textbook, but it holds water. Thanks to the Carpinteria Education Foundation’s (CEF) successful Dine Out 4 Carp Kids program, community members can enrich school curriculum for Carpinteria Unified School District students while also stimulating the local economy.

Test the theory yourself. Here’s how it works: On the third Wednesday of each month from September through June, nine local restaurants donate a portion of their proceeds to CEF, the local nonprofit providing enrichment opportunities and resources in education.

Dine Out 4 Carp Kids is Oct. 16 this month. Participating restaurants are Jack’s Bistro & Famous Bagels, Uncle Chen, PeeBee & Jay’s, Rori’s Artisanal Creamery, Yo Yum Yum, Padaro Beach Grill, Corktree Cellars, and new this year, Jersey Mike’s and Borello’s.

Additionally, the restauranteur reported that Dine Out 4 Carp Kids is good for business, adding a nice bump in sales to the sluggish post-tourist season.

Dine Out is a no-fuss affair. CEF board member Nikki Yamaoka conceived the unique fundraiser so community members could contribute to schools in an easy and enjoyable manner. All one needs to do is eat at a participating establishment on Oct. 16, and the restaurant automatically donates a percentage. No paperwork, signups or permission slips.

To date, Dine Out 4 Carp Kids has generated more than $10,000 to support CUSD programs such as Every 15 Minutes and CHS After Prom. Jacobson estimates she gives $100 to $200 to CEF monthly during the Dine Out campaign.

“We are so fortunate to have Jack’s Bistro in our community. They have supported CEF in so many ways and have been a part of Dine Out 4 Carp Kids since its inception,” noted Casey Balch, board president of CEF. “Not only is Jack’s famous for their bagels, but also for their unwavering support of our local schools.”

Protect the birds

I was happy to see Alena Steen’s column “Life on the Edge: The Carpinteria Salt Marsh” (CVN, Vol. 26, No. 1) about the tremendous success of the Carpinteria Salt Marsh in restoring and helping to preserve a beautiful and valuable natural area in Carpinteria. I would hope that the achievements of the Salt Marsh Preserve would inspire our town to preserve more of the delicate flora and wildlife of the area, inside and outside the preserves.

Steen’s column mentions the Salt Marsh preserve as an example of a successful salvage of an endangered ecosystem. This has helped to restore numbers of wetland birds such as the great blue heron and the snowy egret. Due to preservation efforts wetland birds are recovering. At the same time, we should not forget that other types of birds, seabirds and all types of grassland and “ordinary” birds such as jays, mockingbirds, bluebirds and robins, are not doing well.

I have witnessed precipitous decline of “ordinary” birds in my neighborhood in Carpinteria near the Salt Marsh. Twentyfive years ago, the wires and trees in the beach neighborhood were filled with birds, now there are few birds. At the beach, there are noticeably fewer gulls, pelicans, plovers and other seabirds.

Habitat loss and poisoning of the environment may be reasons for this loss of birdlife. I would hope that we could do something in Carpinteria to restore all of our birds, as we have done with the wetland birds. All of our wildlife contributes to the joy of living in this beautiful environment.

Control the smell and catch the revenue

Every national story about our cannabis county (and there have been many) is like a drip that slowly corrodes our historic Santa Barbara brand. A recent Wall Street Journal article contained familiar themes: odor, property values and cannabis tax revenues that continue to underwhelm. What I found silly, however, were statements by certain politicians that they were doing “everything” they could about the smell.

Other counties limit the size of their cannabis farms, yet the county created a loophole which has made us home to the

and Ben Affleck. It’s the Cookie Monster, it’s Hillary Clinton, and yes sir, possibly, it’s Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

Look out, because now that he may be impeached, he could end up looking offplanet for someone to blame. Think that’s crazy? Last month he reminded us of his godliness by commenting on the White House grounds, “I am the chosen one.”

I’m not sure exactly what that means, but in my next life, I definitely want to come back as that.

Abraham Lincoln wrote, “The time comes upon every public man when it is best for him to keep his lips closed.”

Come now, Mr. Lincoln, what fun would that be? You think I’ve spent two and a half years waiting for Mr. Trump to act sane just so I could take him seriously?

Get a clue. I prefer Lou Holtz’ offering: “The man who complains about the way the ball bounces is likely the one who dropped it.” See, that is beautiful.

largest pot grows in the world. In jurisdictions with much smaller farms, the odors have been shown to travel for a mile or more. Therefore, as new grows come online the odor zone will expand. For years, other jurisdictions have preferred sealed greenhouses. Here, however, the industry helped craft the ordinance. And why saddle yourself with greater costs, even if they would protect collective values, health and quality of life? In other words, love thy margins, screw thy neighbor.

Had our “representatives” pushed back even slightly, new greenhouses would be sealed. Instead, these facilities have vents that extend into the sky like a huge middle finger to every resident who cares to notice. What’s truly maddening is that as big money moves-in, county mandated costs could easily be added, and the return-on-investment would still be crazy good.

The WSJ article also mentioned the anemic cannabis tax revenue—$5.8 million in year one. Because our politicians decided to tax the industry based on cash revenue rather than verifiable acreage, the county lost as much as $30 million in the first year alone! Shouldn’t this have caused some consequence or, minimally, a re-examination of this sweetheart scheme? Nope, not in our Banana Republic county where there is apparently neither oversight nor accountability.

If you were in an alternate reality and proposed a storyline for Hollywood studio executives that perfectly mirrored Donald Trump’s time in Washington, they couldn’t kick you off the lot because they’d be too busy attempting to control their laughter.

We must not be silent; we must not turn the other way and pretend it’s not happening when we are worried for a child.

Children didn’t choose to be brought into the world, and they shouldn’t be punished for decisions their parents made or didn’t make. As a loving and affluent community and nation, we should support children who are at risk. And we must call it out and do something when children are being harmed.

In Carpinteria, staff at Carpinteria Children’s Project (CCP), employees at all licensed childcare providers, school district employees, medical care providers and others are mandated reporters of child abuse and neglect. We engage in regular training and know what to do. And it’s hard—sometimes really, really hard—to believe children are being harmed and to take action. We want to believe it’s not true.

Child maltreatment happens in Carpinteria. CALM, an organization that works here and throughout our county to help children heal, writes that “failure of caretakers to provide for a child’s fundamental needs” is child neglect.

“Although neglect can include children’s necessary emotional needs, neglect typically concerns adequate food, housing, clothing, medical care and education.”

Neglect is more prevalent than physical abuse. Physical abuse “frequently includes shaking, slapping, punching, beating, biting or burning.” Individuals, whether mandated reporters or not, can call 1-800-367-0166 to report child neglect or abuse to a Santa Barbara Child Welfare Service representative. You can call and share your experience and the representative will help you decide what to do—a report may not be warranted.

We must also not look away from national policies that are harming children,

The high commissioner’s office of the United Nations condemned the practice of separating children from their parents, calling it a serious violation of children’s rights and international law.

Our country is violating children’s rights and international law. Thank you to the protesters who every Friday afternoon stand at the corner of Linden and Carpinteria avenues and remind us—remind me—to speak up. Immigration is a complicated issue but separating children from their parents is inhumane and likely to cause trauma that, particularly if untreated, will haunt these children and affect their ability to be contributing members of society their whole lives. It’s really, really hard to watch the news some days, but on this too, we shouldn’t turn away and pretend it’s not happening.

Children need security, food and medical care, regardless of the circumstances of their birth. We have to figure out how to help when families ask. I’m proud to work at a place where every staff member does their best to help. All families are welcome at the Carpinteria Children’s Project.

Monday, Sept. 30

the bicycle rack at the high school. Neither bicycle was locked. One bicycle was worth $85, the other bicycle was worth $100.

A deputy went to a parked vehicle and when he shined his flashlight in the interior of the car, he saw a woman with a meth pipe on her lap. A search incident to arrest was conducted and more meth was found. The woman was arrested and booked at Santa Barbara County Jail.

12:14 a.m. / Possession / South end of Bailard Avenue

Tuesday, Oct. 1

4:55 p.m. / Grand Theft Auto / 9th Street and Ash Avenue

Sirius XM Radio called dispatch to advise they were getting a ping on a stolen vehicle from the Goleta Honda Dealership. The 2020 Honda Pilot last pinged was in the area of 9th Street and Ash Avenue. A deputy found the vehicle occupied by one male and waited for other units to make a high-risk stop.

A man was arrested. A search of the vehicle yielded meth and a large butcher knife which was on the floorboard. The man was also on active probation. His probation officer was contacted, and a detainer was issued. The man was charged with vehicle theft, possession of the butcher knife, possession of meth and violation of probation. He was booked at Santa Barbara County Jail and a representative from the car dealership came to pick up the vehicle.

10:21 p.m. / Possession / 101 offramp at Bates Road

A deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding, and it was occupied by four persons.

One of the occupants was on summary probation and the driver agreed to a consent search of the vehicle. A man and a woman were cited and released for possession of a meth pipe and heroin, and possession of a meth pipe with a usable amount.

All the subjects were then released.

12:01 a.m. / Warrant Citation / 800 block Linden Avenue

During a premise check of the parking lot of a supermarket, a deputy observed a vehicle parked on the south side of the building, occupied by a Santa Barbara man. A records check showed she had an outstanding warrant for her arrest for traffic violations. The woman was cited for the warrant and released.

1:21a.m. / Possession / 4200 block Via Real

During a premise check of a motel parking lot, a deputy observed a vehicle parked along the north side of the parking lot, occupied by an Oxnard man. He consented to a search of his vehicle and was found to be in possession of methamphetamine.

Wednesday, Oct. 2,

10:43 a.m. / Consuming Alcohol in Public / 800 block Linden Avenue

A 59-year-old Carpinteria resident was cited for drinking alcohol in public. The alcohol was poured and he was cited and released.

12:19 p.m. / Stolen Bicycles / 4800 block Foothill Road

On Oct. 1, between 7: 30 and 9:15 p.m., an unknown suspect(s) stole two bicycles from

Deputies were dispatched to a report of two people arguing. A records check revealed that a woman involved in the incident had a warrant out for her arrest.

She was transported and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

Friday, Oct. 4

8:32 a.m. / Warrant Arrest / El Carro Lane

On a call of transients camping along the bike path, a 23-year-old transient was contacted. The woman-had a no bail violation of probation warrant out for her arrest. She was arrested and booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.

1:18 p.m. / Residential Burglary / 4600 block Carpinteria Avenue

Sometime last week, an unknown suspect(s) entered a trailer by removing a window. The only property stolen (known so far) is a mail key and statue.

This property could have been taken by a family member, making it a civil issue.

4:18 p.m. / Vandalism / 5000 block 7th Street

At some time over the last two days, while the victim was away, an unknown suspect(s) threw an unknown red substance onto her porch. She asked for this to be documented.

5:53 p.m. / Public Intoxication / 4500 block Carpinteria Avenue

The manager of a hotel called to report a transient male defecating on the property. Upon arrival, deputies located a man sitting on the sidewalk at the corner of Santa Ynez and Carpinteria Avenue.

He was intoxicated and was arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

6:39 p.m. / Violation of Restraining Order / 4100 block Via Real

A woman reported that her ex-husband texted her several times in violation of a restraining order. A report was sent to the DA’s office for review.

Saturday, Oct. 5

10:45 p.m. / Shoplifting / 1000 block Casitas Pass Road

A deputy was driving through Casitas Pass Plaza when he was flagged down by supermarket employees who advised that a male and female had just shoplifted merchandise from the store and were pushing a shopping cart. The deputy saw a woman pull a wine bottle from her purse and put it in the shopping cart. She was immediately contacted and the store employee then pointed out a man who was attempting to walk away. The deputy directed another deputy to stop and detain the man. According to the witnesses, the man and woman filled a shopping cart with merchandise, then unlocked the door which is usually locked after 8 p.m. They exited the supermarket without making any attempt to pay, although both had enough cash to pay for the over $100 worth of items. The man and woman were arrested for shoplifting and booked in Santa Barbara County Jail.

Facing Ourselves comes to Carpinteria

For three weeks, beginning on Oct. 18, Patricia Houghton-Clarke’s “Facing Ourselves: Carpinteria,” will be exhibited at the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center.

Houghton-Clarke’s large-format portrait photographs explore migration and integration from an intimate perspective.

“Facing Ourselves” began on the frontlines of the recent wave of Northern African, Western Asian and Middle Eastern refugees that crashed upon the shores of Western Europe. While other documentarians focused on the dramatic and politically charged journeys, Houghton-Clarke quietly turned her camera upon the refugees themselves as they assimilated into new communities and cultures.

When asked about memorable facets of the “Facing Ourselves” project, Houghton-Clarke replied, “One of the most satisfying aspects has been the ‘ripple effect’ in Carpinteria, whereby community members have sponsored fundraising workshops and are creating adjunct events synchronizing with the theme of the exhibition.”

The exhibition won the international Julia Margaret Cameron Honorable Mention Award for Human Rights based on the portraits from Italy and London. Several of the photographs were exhibited in

An opening reception will be held on Friday, Oct. 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center, 865 Linden Ave., and an artist talk will be held at CAC on Saturday, Oct.19, from 2 to 5 p.m. Both the reception and artist talk are free and open to the public.

Getting ready for winter rains

living the green life erin maker For my coworkers and I, October means having a moment to breathe after a busy September and the Avocado Festival and getting ready for what passes for winter on our little slice of coastline. In California, over 90 percent of precipitation falls between Oct. 1 and April 30, but on the Central Coast it tends to be limited

to the end of October through mid-March.

Part of the preparation happens during Coastal Cleanup Day, when volunteers help clean our creeks and beaches of trash before the “first flush” that comes with the initial rain of the season.

Drainage in Southern California was built around getting storm water to the ocean quickly, but we now know that slowing down these flows and encouraging water to soak into the groundwater basin is preferable. In recent years, the State Water Quality Control Board has changed development requirements to address changing landscapes. As we developed the land, we created more impervious (paved) surfaces, which allowed water to flow more quickly across the land and to the ocean, but newer develop-

In Carpinteria, where most development happened years ago, prepping for winter storms means thinking about how water runs across our properties.

In preparation for the rainy season, there are many things we can do at our homes and businesses to reduce impacts of heavy rains. Mulching is an easy fix for bare soil. Mulch will help slow the flow of water and reduce impacts of erosion, allowing water to soak into the ground instead of running off. Maybe you have been thinking about redoing your yard with drought tolerant plants but don’t have the time right now, or it isn’t currently in your budget. Spreading mulch is an affordable and easy first step, as the mulch will help soil recover over the winter and soften the ground for spring plantings. Sandbags also help in areas that are prone to flooding. Because the bigger storm events tend to be fast moving and we live in an area prone to flash flooding, many of us have experienced the quick rise of water along a side yard that doesn’t drain properly. Where I live, we have clay soils and a sloped back yard that turns into a small pond during those rains. Strategically placed sandbags help move that runoff away from the house.

Sandbags are available many places—in Carpinteria, you can pick them up at the Public Works yard free of charge.

Clearing properties of any improperly stored materials is another important step in getting things ready for winter.

Paints, oils and other materials that are considered hazardous to the environment

should be properly stored at all times of the year, but especially before winter.

Businesses that handle hazardous materials should have a plan for how to store and dispose of them, and residents can bring paint, batteries, oil, antifreeze, small household electronics and fluorescent bulbs to the city’s disposal on the second and fourth Saturday of the month.

Making sure your drainage systems are cleared out also helps reduce the risk of flooding. Many properties have historic drainage channels that are the responsibility of the property owner. Clearing any debris that may have accumulated, such as tree branches and leaves, will allow water to flow through those channels and into the connecting creek, flood control facility or storm drain system.

Winter storms can take us by surprise with their intensity, especially when combined with high tides. It is important to take steps now to be prepared for winter rains. Sandbags and mulch are available for free at Carpinteria City Hall to residents, and there are low-cost options for mulch delivery. Being ready for rain in advance means we can enjoy it when it does come!

The “All Eight Club” gets a new member

I grew up in Carpinteria and would often gaze out at the Channel Islands, wondering what was out there and what they were really like. My father, Campbell Grant was an archaeologist, artist and historian and had been to Santa Cruz Island many times gathering facts for his books on Indian art and culture. He told me a lot of stories about the islands, including flying to Santa Cruz with the then owner of the island, Carey Stanton. I never got to go with him, but reveled at the notion of seeing first-hand what was out there. In 1974, my cousin Oliver Andrews, first son of “Floppy” Hyde, introduced me to SCUBA diving at Anacapa Island.

Smitten with the beauty both above and below the water, I have been an avid SCUBA diver since. Over the next 30 years, I have visited and dove most of the Channel Islands, and even spent a week on remote San Nicholas with Channel Islands Restoration reestablishing indigenous plants. When someone asked if I had been to all eight Channel Islands, I decided to put the three most distant ones that I hadn’t yet visited on my “bucket list.”

I have a 22-foot Bayliner Classic Cruiser power boat named “Indian Summer.”

Very seaworthy, the boat could probably take a six-foot breaking wave over the bow. She cruises at 20 to 26 knots, sleeps four and is very comfortable on extended island trips. I have owned “Indian Summer” for about 10 years and have traversed the channel a dozen times on dive trips. One day this summer, my artist friend and fellow Carpinterian Thomas Van Stein asked if I thought it was possible to find the Cabrillo monument on San Miguel Island, which started my quest for all eight islands, 45-years after I first set foot on Anacapa.

Calculating the fuel consumption and capacity of “Indian Summer,” I studied the charts and determined that San Miguel Island—the northwesternmost of all the Channel Islands—was within reach. On July 6, Thomas and I launched from Santa Barbara Harbor and were soon greeted by a Grey Whale displaying its tail fin in dramatic fashion as it sounded to the deep. A large pod of dolphins crashed the party too. After about two-and-a-half hours we dropped anchor in Cuyler Harbor. I launched the inflatable and Thomas and I went ashore in search of the Cabrillo Monument.

A half-mile hike brought us to the top of a bluff overlooking the spectacular sand dunes of Cuyler Harbor. We found the monument, and returning to the boat we passed elephant seals basking on the beach in the distance. Thomas fixed us dinner, and I poured us both a glass of

wine to celebrate. The following day we motored back to Santa Barbara. That trip marked six islands down, leaving two to go.

Less than a month later, on Aug. 2, I launched “Indian Summer” from Ventura Harbor for a solo voyage to Santa Barbara Island. I had purchased an offshore harness with a self-inflating flotation device, a tether that I attached to the boat and a personal locator beam that can send a distress call via satellite. Fortunately, I never had to use it and with a little luck, I probably never will. The forecast was for light winds but the morning fog was thick, with less than a mile of visibility.

A weather app indicated that the fog was cleared up a couple of miles out, so I motored seaward until the visibility improved before plotting a new course to Santa Barbara Island, 48 nautical miles off.

All that stands on lonely Santa Barbara are a building high on a bluff and some other structures closer to the water. There is no dock or easy means to disembark, so I circumnavigated the island looking for a suitable landing, but none exists as the island is surrounded by a rocky, craggy shoreline and cliffs. Eventually, I braved the sketchy landing at the structure, asking permission from the resident harbor seals. They obliged and I made my way up to the visitor center where I signed my name in the ledger. After snapping a few photos from atop the bluff, I returned to “Indian Summer” and set a course for Two Harbors on Catalina Island.

I paid for a mooring buoy, then rowed the inflatable ashore where I met a couple from Newport Beach who invited me to join them for dinner. After dinner, a bit exhausted from the trip, I rowed back to “Indian Summer,” happy that I had gotten island number seven behind me.

I hauled the inflatable aboard the next morning, then rounded the corner of Catalina and set a course for San Clemente Island. I had researched the Navycontrolled island to determine what my chances were of getting there without being arrested or shot. About 90 percent of the coastline is listed as “restricted,” but several miles of the westside, mid-island, were listed as “available, no scheduled operations.” This didn’t mean that it was open to the public, only that fisherman could approach within three miles and I figured this was my best chance.

Approaching the island from the north, I skirted the west side and turned shoreward after about 15 miles when I noticed that the airfield tower on the island was out of view. I was hoping for a beach with no waves where I could nose “Indian Summer” ashore while I put my toes in the sand and took a few selfies.

No such luck—when I got within 100 yards, I realized that the entire coast was rocky and forbidding. Knowing that the Navy could show up at any minute and that I had traveled so far to accomplish my goal, I dropped anchor, tossed the inflatable overboard and rowed like a

man possessed towards the island. When my bare feet hit the rocky shore, I smiled with the realization that I had done it—I had now visited all eight Channel Islands.

But there was no time for getting emotional. I took a few photos, then pushed the inflatable off between waves and rowed out with the same fervor I had rowing in. Once on board “Indian Summer,” I throttled up and bolted out to the three-mile boundary, clear of United States Navy territory. I then plotted a course for Avalon on Catalina. As before, I got fuel, secured a mooring buoy and rowed ashore for food and a drink. The following morning, I pulled out of Avalon and headed back to Two Harbors where I had breakfast with my Newport Beach friends who I had met the day before.

After breakfast, I set a course for King Harbor, Redondo Beach, where I refueled before heading up the coast, stopping at Paradise Cove for lunch.

I then cruised the point admiring all the fabulous homes that line the beach and can only be seen from the ocean.

As the day grew late and the fog rolled in, I ended my epic adventure as I had started it: in low visibility at Ventura Harbor. Marla Daily of the Santa Cruz Island Foundation invited me to join the “All Eight Club,” said to be the mostexclusive geographic club in the world, with a membership in the low 200s—a mere tenth of the number of people who belong to the lauded “Seven Summits Club.” I was grateful for the invitation and honored to accept.

Warriors fight hard, but still fall to Hueneme

At game’s end, the Vikings were leaving Valley Memorial Stadium with a 32-14 Citrus Coast League victory over the Warriors. Carpinteria falls to 1-5 on the year, 0-3 in league play and Hueneme improves to 3-4 and 1-0 in league.

The Warriors got off to a good start as Tyler Cervantes recovered a fumble on the Vikings’ 33-yard line. However, they couldn’t advance the ball any further and were forced to punt. Jacob Mata’s punt drove the Hueneme punt returner into his own end zone where the ball bounced off his hands and into the grasp of the Warriors’ Diego Hernandez, who dove to make the grab for a touchdown and gave his team a 7-0 lead just a little over a minute into the game.

The home team took the one touchdown lead into the second quarter, but the Vikings were on the move with a first down on the Carpinteria 31-yard line.

After both teams were flagged for penalties on consecutive plays, Hueneme quarterback Ethan Neos found Manuel Ortiz.

After making the catch, he ran 35 yards for the score tying it at 7-7. But a solid return

Two plays later, Carpinteria quarterback Diego Mendez raced 16 yards for the score, and the Warriors were back on top, 14-7 with 4:55 left in the half.

The Vikings once again had good field position at their own 43. They would get down to the Warrior 24, but a sack

by Enrique Marin slowed Hueneme down, and the Warriors earned a 14-7 lead at halftime.

After receiving the second half kickoff, Carpinteria was unable to move the ball, and once again had to punt.

Hueneme wasted little time tying the game, as Neos connected with Huerta again. Huerta, breaking tackles along the way, sprinted 75 yards to pay dirt for his second touchdown of the game.

“We had a lot of missed tackles, we got to wrap up better,” explained Warriors coach Mario Robinson.

Following another Carpinteria threeand-out, Ortiz was off and running on a punt return, making his way down the sidelines for an apparent touchdown, but a penalty nullified the score and the

game remained tied.

The Vikings still had another big play left in them, as running back Kevin Weaver bolted 55-yards for a touchdown to capture the lead at 20-14. They tacked on two more scores in the fourth, with Weaver going one yard and Isaac Basua running 13 yards.

“We started really well, fought hard, we just have to be able to sustain for four quarters,” said Robinson.

CHS CHeerleaderS Say CHS pays tribute to Alumnus Ed Rubio

On Oct. 4, Carpinteria High School honored alum Ed Rubio prior to the football game in a pregame ceremony. Generations of Rubios in specialty t-shirts donning the family name, gathered at midfield during the performance of the national anthem by the CHS band before kickoff.

Rubio, who passed away in September, was a lifetime member of the CHS Boosters Club, and a sports enthusiast. During his playing days as a Warrior, he led the school to three straight Tri-Valley League championships in ’51, ’52 and ’53, and was named Most Valuable Back of the ’52 team. He attended every Warriors game and was well known for his “Here we go Warriors, here we go!” cheer that would fire up the crowd.

The family has set up a scholarship in his and his late wife Nancy Cravens name in the amount of $250 that will be given annually to a chosen CHS senior.

Carpinteria High School Athletics will host their first-annual mattress sale fundraiser

The Carpinteria High School Boosters will host their first-annual mattress sale fundraiser at the Carpinteria High School cafeteria, 4810 Foothill Road, on Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Over 30 mattress models will be on display, along with adjustable power bases, premium pillows, bed frames, sheets and mattress protectors. Featured brands include Simmons Beautyrest, Southerland and Beautyrest Black among others. Beds and mattresses will be available in all sizes and come with factory warranties. Financing and delivery options will be available. A portion of every sale will benefit CHS Athletics.

October 1 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team played Fillmore, winning 3-1. In the position of setter, Sarah Weitzman had 25 assists. Captain and outside hitter Malia Shellabarger led with 12 kills for the night. Outside hitter Sadie Mead had nine digs and 10 kills for Carpinteria. Middle blocker Eva Gropper had two blocks and five kills for the Warriors. Libero Emily Montoya had 28 digs. Carpinteria’s overall record is 7-5 and Citrus Coast League Record is 4-2.

October 3 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team dropped a nonleague match to visiting St. Bonaventure, 11-7. In doubles, Jeannette Carrillo/ Zahra Porinsh and Lexi Persoon/Mercy Torres each went 2-1. Natalia Perez/Abbie Delwiche went 1-1 for the Warriors’ other doubles point. Cate School sophomore Anna Di Sorbo was named Co-Athlete of the Week by the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table along with Santa Barbara High School football player Noah Wood. On Oct. 2, Di Sorbo broke the school record on the Rams’ home cross country course with a time of 18:49.

The time shattered the previous mark of 20:02 set back in 2002.

October 3 - The Carpinteria High School girls golf team came in fifth in the second Citrus Coast League tournament of the year hosted by Fillmore at Elkins Ranch.

“Daisy Martinez played like a little tiger and led the team with a 52,” said Warriors coach Chris Cochrane about the second-year player. Cochrane also praised newcomer Alejandra Ceja who shot a 56. “It’s awesome for someone who has only been playing one month,” exclaimed Cochrane. Nordhoff won with a 425-team score and is two-for-two this season. Fillmore and Santa Paula were second and third. Individual medalists were Sophia Leighton of Hueneme who shot a 46, followed by Hanna Ignacio of Nordhoff with a 48.

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH Now Rincon is not what you’d call a “secret spot.” The Queen of the Coast is an international celebrity, and always well-attended with even a hint of swell.

It certainly does not belong to me, nor to any individual, although some surfers seem to own the place through sheer skill, and more than a few have tried to own it over the years through violence and intimidation. But when some Santa Barbara surfing friends of mine reached out recently with concerns about a payto-view camera fixed on the Rincon Cove from somewhere in La Conchita via the Surfline surf-forecasting company, my notion of ownership came into clearer focus.

No, Rincon does not belong to me, but it does belong to my community. Although this local community—including surfers from Oxnard/Ventura/Ojai and Carpinteria/Santa Barbara/Goleta—does not own Rincon exclusively either, as our fellow wave riders from wherever they hail ought to rightly feel welcome to experience the extraordinary natural phenomenon of the point when it’s working at its full potential.

But this camera business is something else entirely. While the Indicator/ Rivermouth/Cove complex does not belong to us in the sense of ownership, it is nevertheless ours to look after and protect. The concerns we have with the Surfline camera center on the fact that no one locally has had any say in whether or not a camera should stream images from what in truth are our sacred surfing grounds. The argument that Rincon is a

Rincon produces many moments of untrammeled, and unexpected, perfection. A Surfline company live-stream camera will not contribute to these. public place, deluged with thronging masses anyway, misses the point that yet another camera, on yet another section of California coastline, represents an ongoing encroachment.

Will no places of natural splendor remain un-surveilled? Is the convenience of a surfer or other casual observer the most-important factor to consider, or the financial benefit of the La Conchita property owner and their contract with Surfline? I say no—those are not the most important factors. The most important factor, beyond even the potential impact on our local surf break, is a general acceptance of corporate intrusion into every aspect of our lives. The data mining and the casual acquisition of what was previously known as the public sphere, leads only, ultimately, to a dystopian future-scape, ruled by technocratic oligarchs.

October 4 - The Cate School girls tennis team defeated St. Bonaventure by a final score of 14-4. “The victory was not without some challenges, as both Grace Fuss and Carol Cai saw their unbeaten season records ended by St. Bonny standout Helena Insua,” said Rams coach Trevor Thorpe. Aminah Hill also fell to Insua, finishing the day, 2-1. The Rams won doubles, finishing with a 9-0 sweep. Pairings Fritze Mayer/ Ashi Kamra and Julianna Forry/Maesa Vongkusolkit each took tie break victories.

October 8 - The Cate School girls tennis team without three team members in a Tri-Valley League match, prevailed behind the new lineup in a 13-5 win over Foothill Tech. “Freshman Ellie Tunnell, playing for the first time in the singles starting lineup, took a big win in the first round over Foothill Tech’s Clare Duganne, while Carol Cai moved at the last minute from the doubles lineup to beat Ella Duganne, 6-0,” said Rams coach Trevor Thorpe. Cai’s win matched top Cate player Grace Fuss’ 6-0 victory over Noelle Haywood for a Cate singles sweep in the first round. Moving Cai from the doubles lineup meant that first-year varsity player Emily May made her debut as a starter, pairing with junior Fritze Mayer at the Number-one position.

The two ended up falling to Foothill Tech’s senior tandem of Alyssa McClain and Jolie Seemayer, but the duo also took 6-1, 6-2 victories in their remaining rounds.

“The Cate doubles pairings of Mia Foster/Ashi Kamra and Julianna Forry/Maesa Vongkusolkit fared equally well against Foothill’s Number-two and Number-three doubles team, but no one could take down the experienced McClain/Seemayer combo on the day,” explained Thorpe.

October 3 - The Cate School girls volleyball team beat La Reina in four sets to capture another league victory. “Any time a team is hitting a .258, they are going to win and it was Kenzie Davidson, Riley Borchardt, Maya Blattberg, Grace Johnson, and Chidera Chukwumerije who hit over a .300 to contribute to the team’s solid hitting performance,” said Rams coach Greg Novak. “Once again, senior libero, Grace Blankenhorn was a digging machine,” explained Novak. We haven’t communicated with Surfline, choosing instead to gather local support via petition. Another angle we’ve discussed is pressuring advertisers on the Surfline site—the engine that runs the machine. We’re hoping that Patagonia and Channel Island Surfboards (both of whom stream surfing content on the site) will ask Surfline to take down the camera.

Ironically perhaps, we need corporate help to counter a corporate maneuver affecting the community. But both companies, massive producers of surfing and outdoor goods, work towards limiting their environmental impact and it makes sense that they would support this grassroots cause that has many wider, societal implications.

Crowded as Rincon can get, there are still moments when the ocean out-paces the swell forecasters and throws some natural magic, the waves arriving unannounced. Then it is only for those who may have had a hunch, or simply popped down to see what’s happening, to enjoy. These

are fleeting moments, but the whole deal is fleeting—our children hurtling through the early years, our bodies holding strength for as long as they are able—as are our chances to experience unexpected wonder. No camera for convenience sake is worth sacrificing this vestige of life on earth as it has always been, as the author of the book of Ecclesiastes knew so well: “The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.”

October 4 - The Cate School football team traveled to Malibu to take on the Sharks in the first ever meeting between the two schools in football, walking away with a 40-9 win. After some back and forth play, the first quarter ended with the score 0-0.

On the ensuing Malibu drive, the Sharks kicked a field goal to take the lead, 3-0. The Rams went on to score 27 unanswered points to end the first half with a 27-3 lead.

Sophomore QB Will Bouma connected on touchdown passes of 15 (to Will Deardorff), 30 (to Mason Oetgen) and 22 yards (again to Deardorff). In the second half, Deardorff capped the opening drive with an 11-yard TD run.

Following a Malibu touchdown, backup QB Matt Holmes led the Rams on a 56yard drive of his own. This drive culminated in a Jack Ludviksen one-yard run for the final score of the evening. Junior defensive end Michael Armstrong came up with a sack to stop a Malibu drive late in the second half. Freshman Matthew Stewart had three open field tackles to keep the Sharks out of the end zone late in the game.

Sophomore Theo Hansen closed the night’s action with a fourth down tackle on the Rams 25-yard line right before time expired. Cate Head Coach Ben Soto said, “This was a good win for us coming off of two straight losses. We were able to get back to executing our offense and came up with some strong defensive plays when we needed to this evening.” The Rams move to 3-2 on the season.

Cross country

October 2 - The Cate School cross country team hosted a meet with sophomore Anna DiSorbo setting a course record. DiSorbo recorded a time of 18:49 which bested the mark of 20:02 set in 2002 by Sorel Carradine. Sophomore Meehan Baher took second with a time of 20:26, third place was captured by yet another sophomore, Ella Gardner who clocked in with a time of 22:22. Three freshman earned the next few spots with Kendall Thorne finishing in 22:27, Lylie Bechtel in 22:37 and Talia Tom in 22:50. Sophomore Kennedy Simpson placed seventh with a time of 22:55 and freshman Pheobe Hancock took eighth in 23:03. As for the boys, Midland finished first in the team scoring with Will Goddard crossing the finish line in first with a time of 16:12. The Rams took second as a team, as senior co-captain Tesfa Asmara secured fifth place with a time of 17:30. Sophomore Nick Patrick took seventh in 18:18 and another sophomore Peter Wood corralled the 11th spot with a time of 18:52.

Pen-pals

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY I thought I had it all. I’d gone through all the places where photos and letters and gems and artifacts would be saved. Gramma was fully on board with my search—it was her memories and treasures we were after to write her life story—but my thoroughness at some point taxed her. She didn’t complain to me, but to my sister who was pleased to tell me Gramma had said, “Your sister has been through all those drawers and didn’t put everything away right.” Thinking of that will always make me smile. In the end, though, it was clear I didn’t go deep enough.

After she was gone and we were sifting carefully through her possessions, my mother found a letter in an envelope with a postcard. It wasn’t hidden away, it was in the desk in her kitchen where she kept important papers, and Gramma and I had both been through it several times.

How did we miss this? A pen-pal letter written by a young girl from Berlin with surprising historical interest! What could have my grandmother told me about it?

First, a few words about pen pals before getting to the letter. Curiosity led me on a brief search on how and when the pen-pal concept began. The earliest mention of a “pen friend” I could find in the newspapers was in 1889. That terminology was still being used in 1900, when a woman wrote a letter to the editor defending her practice and enjoyment of writing and receiving letters to and from strangers who were “liberal men starving for the companionship and sympathy of women who were not creed bound churchites.” It isn’t until the 1920s that the term pen pal is prevalent, with invitations to join Pen Pal Social and Correspondence Clubs as a means to escape loneliness in

“this good old town of ours.” Countering those objectives are admonitions against young women corresponding with prisoners in the “very dangerous game of pen pal stuff,” but by the late ’20s and early ’30s, school children were engaging in the practice as a way to broaden their world views.

Which brings us back to the letter my grandmother received…

I am also a girl, fourteen years of age and wish to have a correspondence with you. Our school is situated in the north of Berlin. I am in the first class which contains thirty-two pupils. Most of them live in the north of the city. We have thirteen class-rooms, a needle work and a room for gymnastics. In each class we have some pictures of our leaders who are at the top of our government. Two beautiful pictures, of our Reichsprasident Hindenburg and the Reichskanzler Hitler, decorate the halls of our school.

On the 30th of January our Reichsprasident Hindenburg nominated Hitler Reichskanzler a year ago. On this day many flags were hoisted, on the remembrance that Hitler recaptured the power.

Dear friend, Will you be so kind as to put into your next letter a picture of yourself with your address.

Hoping soon to have an answer from you, I am your unseen friend, Elfriede Off My grandmother would have also been 14 during this correspondence between Berlin and the farmland of North Dakota. It’s a humbling letter—the grasp of the English language this young girl had, how her innocence was trampled or shattered as history marched forward.

I can’t help wondering what ever happened to her.

I share this as a reminder, and encouragement. Don’t falter during your searches as there may be something extraordinary tucked in the most obvious of places.
