Foodbank’s free summer lunch program launches

The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County will provide free takeaway meals for all children 18 and younger this summer in their Picnic in the Park program. Sack lunches will be distributed Monday through Friday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Carpinteria Middle School, 5351 Carpinteria Ave., and Canalino School, 1480 Linden Ave. Measures have been taken to ensure safety and cleanliness at each site. Covid-19 numbers climb in South County

The South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria now have 34 cases of Covid-19, as reported by the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department on June 16—with three new cases confirmed on that day. The city of Santa Barbara had five new cases on June 16, bringing their total count to 143.

Of 2,115 cases of Covid-19 across the county, 22 have resulted in death. Nine of those deaths were in the city of Santa Maria which now has 629 cases. Lompoc’s federal prison has had 987 cases, of which 977 are said to be recovered, and three ended in death. The city of Lompoc has had four deaths of their 119 cases.

Across the county, 25,977 people have been tested for Covid-19. Of the confirmed cases, 244 are still active, 1,777 have fully recovered, 181 are recovering at home, 56 are hospitalized, and 14 are hospitalized in the intensive care unit. Seventy-two cases are pending information.

Parking enforcement resumes

Timed and street sweeping parking enforcement resumed in the city of Carpinteria on June 15 after being suspended for several months because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Code Compliance officers will be enforcing both street sweeping and time limits.

City cancels Independence Day Parade, Rods & Roses postponed

The city of Carpinteria’s annual Independence Day Parade has been canceled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Large gatherings such as festivals, celebrations or parades are not allowed during the current phase of the state and county’s reopening plans.

Slowing the spread of the virus remains a priority, and social distancing would be difficult to maintain at large events of this sort, stated a representative from the city.

The Rods & Roses Car Show, which traditionally takes place preceding the parade, will be held virtually on July 25. Organizers are also planning an in-person car show to be held in December.

Hopenet starts free Covid-19 isolation support group

A free virtual Covid-19 isolation support group sponsored by Hopenet will begin on June 22 and continue every Monday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The public is invited to join at anytime. Sessions will be held via Zoom. To sign up, call (805) 419-3212.

Birdwatchers’ group meets online

The Carpinteria Birdwatchers meetings are online via Zoom until further notice on Thursdays from 4 to 5:30 p.m. All ages and birdwatching experience are welcome. Carpinteria man seeks blood stem cell match

Peter Winn, a British trained arborist who now lives in Carpinteria with his wife and daughter, has been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer. Winn’s doctors have recommended a blood stem cell transplant to treat his cancer and the family is currently searching for a donor through the Be the Match Registry.

“This strong family has managed to fight off cancer once before when Jan was diagnosed with HER 2 positive breast cancer in 2015. Please help this determined family fight off cancer a second time!” states the family’s Local arborist Peter Winn message on Be the Match.

CUSD School board faces the moment

BY CHRISTIAN BEAMISH Acknowledging the pivotal moment taking place in American history, with widespread peaceful protests in every part of the country demanding racial justice, Carpinteria Unified School District Superintendent Diana Rigby and the CUSD Board of Trustees invited the Carpinteria High School students who organized the protest June 6 in downtown Carpinteria—Laura Flores, Jaqueline Urrutia, Isa Alarcon and Joanna Romero—to address the school board meeting on Tuesday, June 9.

“I’ve been reflecting on racial injustice and how it is present and prevalent in our community and with the district,” Flores began, reading from a letter she had previously sent to the superintendent. Citing “issues of cultural appropriation, racial disparities, racism, bias, etc.,” Flores laid out a strong case for the need to educate students, as well as teachers and staff, about how to identify and dismantle racist perspectives and actions.

Calling for mandatory cultural training across all grade levels in the district, Flores and her fellow student leaders presented numerous slides outlining their demands and identifying problem areas that currently exist. “School is an integral part of the community… (and) should be taught from a compassionate, diverse and educated perspective,” Flores said.

“Students on campus who wear do-rags as a joke, throw around racial slurs and use attire or objects from different cultures for their appearance should not be accepted… (with no) consequences under the reasoning of freedom of speech,” Flores said. “Who is to blame?” she asked. “The students for being uneducated, or our school system that prevents us from learning about these topics?”

Flores also noted that although Carpinteria High School has a majority Latino student body, she and her fellow student leaders feel that decisions about changes to the school schedule are not routinely run by their parents, even as school staff explain that parents have been asked about the changes. “Which parents were asked?” she asked.

“Please use this awakening of the Black Lives Matter movement to educate yourselves, and remember you were elected to represent all of your students…” Flores said in her closing remarks. Flores and her classmates presented a slide outlining CADE Club (Celebrating Adversity Diversity and Education) activities and asked that the club be instated not only at Carpinteria Middle School but on all CUSD campuses as well. Club activities include decorating display cases for Hispanic Heritage month, LGBQT month, Black History month, Women’s History month, etc.; a Día de Los Muertos fundraiser for college tours and occasional DJ performances on campuses with music of various genres represented. The students also requested school support in hosting cultural events.

A slide with the heading “Zero Tolerance for Racism” was presented by the group and Jaqueline Urrutia said, “One of the things that we want to advocate for especially is a zero tolerance for racism—not only focus on disciplinary actions but really accentuate and educate students as to why what they’re saying or doing isn’t right, the history behind it, what oppression comes with that, what others have gone through and really let them know why it’s wrong… and this should be taught at a young age, because when we’re young we’re

Isa Alarcon brought attention to State Assembly Bill 331 calling for ethnic studies as a requirement in California schools. Stating that the bill would increase inclusivity, Alarcon also said that cross-cultural understanding should be taught throughout CUSD starting in kindergarten, so “students would not have to feel uncomfortable talking about different cultures or topics, especially when it comes to racial inequality.”

Alarcon noted that curriculum often focuses on male, white perspectives and is sometimes also “whitewashed.”

She also brought up the loss of social science/history electives due to Mr. Bisson’s retirement and the district not refilling his position. “We were deceived and told that AP Gov was going to be available, but now it came to our attention that it no longer will. Change must happen.”

Flores again addressed the school board to conclude the students’ demands: “My request to the board and to you, Superintendent Rigby, is that this issue will be put on the next agenda for open dialogue and further discussion so we can be leaders for change in our country.”

Superintendent’s reply and thoughts on re-opening

The superintendent thanked and congratulated the girls on their thorough presentation, and said, “we will agendize this for a more robust discussion as the topic deserves… thank you again, you’ve raised some serious concerns…”

Rigby then congratulated the 151 seniors that were graduating the following Thursday, June 11, as well as CHS principal Gerardo Cornejo and the parent group and staff who organized the “drive-in-style” graduation ceremony.

The superintendent introduced the new CHS Assistant Principal Kim Ortega, who will take over Ray Vasquez’ job, who was the assistant principal for the previous five years and will now be principal and assistant superintendent in Los Olivos.

Following the announcement by State Superintendent of Schools Tony Thurman on Friday, June 5, on CDC guidelines for schools re-opening, Rigby mentioned face coverings, physical distancing and symptom screening as some actions the district will implement.

More thorough plans are available on the district website, she said.

Distance learning

Aliso Elementary School Principal Dr. Michelle Fox presented on the distance learning program her school implemented after the March 13 shut down.

“Staff have been working hard,” she acknowledged, and added, “of course, nothing is the same as if (students) were working in the classroom with those teachers and getting instruction that

way.” Superintendent Rigby commented, “…there is learning loss when you’re relying only on remote learning—it’s been documented.”

Budget woes

Assistant Superintendent Maureen Fitzgerald presented on the budget and proposed changes to food services, and also introduced the new Food Services Coordinator Michelle Hernandez. A significant cost to the food service program in recent years has come from fewer families applying for free and reduced lunches (which are reimbursed by the federal government) due to fears of the Trump administration’s immigration policies. “There was a real immigration threat,” Fitzgerald said. “Families were not going to fill out that (application for free and reduced lunch) under any circumstances.”

of Covid-19, Fitzgerald announced budget reductions, including savings for the salaries of two retiring teachers for $252,164, a 20 percent reduction in school site operating budgets, a 10 percent cut in athletics funding and a 10 percent reduction of legal fees (assuming the district won’t need legal services).

With $21 million in revenue and $21.2 million in expenditures, Fitzgerald projected $188,074 in deficit spending and an end-balance of $938,849 with 3.2 percent in reserves.

Discussion then turned to the cost of hiring another DLI instructor as the program grows each year with a new cohort starting kindergarten. Board members Andy Sheaffer and Michelle Robertson recalled that they had been told there wouldn’t be a need to hire more BCLAD-certified teachers when DLI started, because there would be a sufficient number of qualified instructors who could be moved around within the existing pool of CUSD teachers.

A call for more athletics

President of the CHS Boosters Board of Directors Jared Johnson addressed the board saying, “we urge you to include meaningful athletics in the budget,” along with pressing for opening outdoor facilities at CHS, including the track, for public use over the summer. Carpinteria resident Curt Souza echoed Johnson’s comments in support of CHS athletics.

Suzanne Anderson 10/7/1933 – 5/31/2020 On May 31, 2020, Suzanne Anderson, beloved matriarch, devoted wife, incredible mother of five, passed away surrounded by her family at age 86.

Sue was born on October 7, 1933, in Spokane, Washington, to Richard and Theodora Sauer. She went to Washington State University and always spoke fondly of her time in sorority. She met her first husband, William Bennett, while working for the Office of Special Investigations as a legal stenographer in the Air Force. She was quick to adapt to becoming a mother of three and to moving households many times as they traveled from base to base.

Sue was widowed at age 34 when her husband lost his life in Vietnam.

Sometime later, she met Ken, who she married. Sue and Ken built an incredible life together. The family grew and

thrived while building and working at the family business, The Palms Restaurant in Carpinteria, California.

Her children would say there are not words that can bring to light the true meaning of all that she was for her family. She taught her children what it means to be a family, how to stand up and be bold, how to work hard, how to stick together, and how to keep going.

She was beautiful, successful, confident and loving. She held strong beliefs, was steadfast in her faith and was an incredible model for living life to the fullest.

Her love was fierce and didn’t waver even amidst her long journey with dementia. She was one tough cookie and when she walked into a room, her strong, beautiful presence was known.

Sue had a love and sense for fashion.

Some of her children’s favorite memories were gathering at the table for a beautiful meal she had prepared and shopping trips to Nordstrom where she not only knew how to pick out what would look perfect on you—she’d buy it for you too.

Sue and Ken celebrated 50 years of marriage in September surrounded by their family. They were an inspiration to many. The love of her family was the centerpiece of her life. Together, they sure knew how to squeeze the most from everyday life. Her spirit is carried on by her five children, Bill, Tod, Joanie, Carla and Kenya, her nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nephew Richard, and nieces Candy and Kathy.

“So I commend the enjoyment of life because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun.”

Kevin is survived by his wife Julie Harrison Lasarzig; son Benjamin Stacey Lasarzig, nieces Olivia and Elsie Beckett (who he considered his own girls); his nephews Gavin and Carson Reilly; his mother Linda Merrill; his father and stepmother William and Brenda Lasarzig; his sister Heidi Lasarzig Reilly; his in-laws Jodi and Chris Harrison, and his vast family. Save the Skate Park trees

Adding to the proposed Skate Park eucalyptus tree removal discussion, as questioned by both Planning Commissioner Jane Benefield (dissenting vote due to the tree removal), and Dr. Steve Figler (CVN, Vol. 26, No. 38), Monarch butterflies in California need eucalyptus trees for their winter roost. They are essential to Monarchs’ epic western migration west of the Rockies. Monarchs migrate from the Canadian border to overwinter along the coast of California, from Mendocino County to San Diego County. Eucalypts are the preferred trees for over-wintering, in particular, Eucalyptus globulus—the species adjacent to the proposed skate park.

Train Station Inn won’t raise water rates

The recent letter by Mr. R. Smith, DMD, (CVN, Vol. 26, No. 36) would seem to indicate a lack of understanding when it comes to water usage and rates in Carpinteria, or most of So Cal. His assertion that a new, small hotel in Carpinteria would cause water rates to rise belies his obvious misunderstanding of the entire water supply and production system. He completely misunderstands, or deliberately misstates, the points in Bob McDonald’s full-page treatise on water costs for the Carpinteria Valley Water District (CVWD).

Mr. McDonald, manager for CVWD, highlights the underlying factors that burden the cost of water for much of our state; such as “water tends to flow north to south” and that Carpinteria is “rural” and “distance from major cities.”

The very informative and well-presented primer on water costs fails to note that Carpinteria, “distan(t)... rural” as it is, is about a 30 minute drive from the largest major metropolitan region in the country, in terms of population and economy, in a state that comprises the fifth largest economy on the globe, surpassing $2.7 trillion dollars. As for Mr. Smith’s assertion, without any facts presented, that increased water usage by a relatively small, new commercial venture will cause rates to rise, he should have listened to the CVWD Board and staff discussion at this past May 27 “public meeting.” There, Mr. McDonald discussed erratic “sales” revenues due to decreased demand from some large users, creating a potential budget

shortfall, contributing to a need for additional revenue. In fact, the district is proposing eliminating a “drought surcharge” because they project they will use less State Water Project water.

The hotel project will not contribute to an increase in water rates by itself. Let’s not join the epidemic of mendacity in public discourse here in.

Allow hospitals to repair equipment

Just this week, I was tested for Covid-19 at Earl Warren fairgrounds.

While waiting for my results to come back, I have been concerned that for those who test positive for coronavirus, hospitals may not have the necessary resources to provide them with adequate care. Our hospitals should be able to keep pace with the demand for life-saving equipment like ventilators, and they cannot do that without the right to repair these devices.

Manufacturers have been restricting hospital access to the necessary information to perform repairs on essential medical equipment. Ventilators, which allow patients to breathe, are an especially crucial example. By not releasing repair information, manufacturers are forcing healthcare workers to decide who will receive the support of the life-saving equipment and who will not.

Our hospitals need and deserve the resources to quickly and effectively service medical equipment. This is a huge, widespread issue—nationwide, more than 43,000 people signed a petition from USPIRG calling on manufacturers to release repair information for ventilators.

I have heard too many terrible stories across the country of what hospital staff and patients, including some of my own family, have gone through due to packed emergency rooms and a lack of resources. It is critical that we aid our frontline medical staff by urging manufacturers to release essential repair information.

Girls Inc. of Carpinteria has announced the recipients of its 2020 scholarship awards, presenting over $7,000 in funds to local girls Yaritza Hernandez, Michelle Alpizar, Adriana Campuzano and Rudy Jimenez.

Each year, the organization awards scholarships that recognize outstanding members who are role models to their peers and exemplify the Girls Inc. mission of inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold.

“We are proud to honor these four young women and their impressive achievements as they prepare for a new chapter in their lives—college,” said Jamie Collins, executive director of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria. “These last few months have highlighted the resiliency of all our girls, which is a testament to not only the dedicated work of our staff but also our scholarship winners who continue to serve as role models to our younger members, their peers and

others in the community. We’re excited to see what they do next!”

Scholarships presented include: Strong, Smart and Bold Senior Award; the Patty & Terry Bliss Scholarship; Fuel Her Fire Scholarship; and the Camilla L. Calene Griffin Scholarship.

Yaritza Hernandez received the Strong Smart and Bold Senior Award ($5,000). The scholarship is given annually to a Eureka! participant in good standing who can demonstrate the impact of the program on her life and who has volunteered with Girls Inc. of Carpinteria. Yaritza joined the organization at the age of 12 as part of the Eureka! program. She has volunteered over 800 hours in the community and spent three summers as a counselor in training at Girls Inc. Yaritza will be the first in her family to attend college and will be pursuing her passion for caregiving and nursing at California State University, Chico, this fall.

Michelle Alpizar was recognized with the Patty & Terry Bliss Scholarship ($1,000), awarded annually to a girl who exhibits a passion for helping others.

Michelle has been a Girls Inc. member for seven years and found career inspiration through the Eureka! Externship with the Housing Authority of Santa Barbara, where she worked with youth facing intersectional challenges. The experience helped her envision a future as a child psychologist, and she plans to pursue this passion at UCLA. Adriana Campuzano received the Fuel Her Fire Scholarship ($800). Fully funded by Girls Inc. of Carpinteria staff, the Fuel Her Fire Scholarship is awarded to support strong, smart and bold high school seniors in their efforts to pursue post-secondary education. Adriana has been with Girls Inc. for 12 years and credits her mentors with pushing her out of her comfort zone and inspiring her to take up leadership positions. She has

participated in three years of ASB leadership, three sports teams and multiple school clubs. Adriana plans to study sports medicine and will be attending SBCC in the fall.

Rudy Jimenez was presented with the Camilla L. Calene Griffin Scholarship ($250). The scholarship is awarded to a girl who exemplifies the positive attributes of Camilla L. Calene Griffin: optimism, inclusiveness, kindness towards others, and expressing desire to work in a profession that helps others. Rudy joined Girls Inc. six years ago and was inspired by the sisterhood of likeminded girls she developed in the Eureka! program and the independence she experienced traveling with her cohort. She plans to study cosmetology at SBCC and hopes to one day be a midwife or nurse.

I never had to fight in a war and wasn’t sent abroad to serve in a dangerous place, but I did serve in the U.S. Army back in the “draft days.” Military service is now voluntary. I have some sense as to what is involved in military service.

It isn’t easy. This is all the more reason to respect and thank those who serve us.

An idea: We should start a national volunteer program that would allow young people to sign up for one-year salaried work training programs in various career fields. The work possibilities should include military training at a somewhat higher salary. There would be no required commitment after the year, but such a program would open doors of opportunity and thought for many young adults.

We should stop attempting to rewrite U.S. history or stand in judgment of those who came before us. We need to learn from the past and appreciate the elements that came together to create the greatest country in the world.

Finally, we seriously need representatives in Washington D.C. who can work together, compromise, and come up with ideas, thoughts and programs to benefit the good people of this country. I see very few current politicians capable of this. Fortunately, this is a situation we can correct if we choose to do so.

We have all observed the many protests, the anger and hostility aimed at individuals of different races, ethnic groups, gender, political parties (who are supposed to represent us), attacking each other. Hate and hostility has all too often generated the choices of our world population. Positive social change has come slowly and almost always after a battle of words and negative actions.

As a young man, I was very involved in many social and political actions with others of similar beliefs and almost always positive changes evolved after many confrontations and all too often because of hostility in the forefront. And I keep asking myself, what is the answer to bring about love and respect for one another and positive changes without negative, and hostile actions? And the answer has always been here. We need to practice what we preach.

Let us practice what we preach, and change will come about peacefully and quickly and we will be a model for the world. Until we all truly fulfill God’s Commandments please keep up the peaceful protests and actions for a better world.

Carpinteria Arts Center has launched a new challenge to the community to create artwork on stamped and addressed postcards. The arts center hopes the community will find an avenue to connect by using the postcard’s blank canvas to share their story of how the pandemic has impacted their life and how creativity has helped during these challenging times. Participants are encouraged to submit art, photos, gardening, poetry or recipes.

Cannabis tax revenues will exceed sales taxes in 2020-21

BY MELINDA BURNS The county’s $1.2 billion budget for the 2020-21 fiscal year, beginning July 1, includes an estimated $10.6 million in cannabis tax revenue, money that officials say will help backfill losses associated with the Covid-19 pandemic and the recession.

From July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021, cannabis taxes are expected to bring in slightly more revenue to the county than sales taxes. In a budget report presented to the county Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, June 9, the County Executive Office said that cannabis tax revenue would help avoid layoffs, prevent library closures and reductions in hours, and pay for pandemic-related programs.

In addition, the board set aside $500,000, largely in cannabis tax revenues, for an “equity fund,” to help address racial inequality and discrimination.

Nearly 90 percent of an estimated $271 million in tax revenue for the county’s general fund in 2020-21 will come from property taxes, the budget report shows.

Sales taxes, bed taxes (paid by hotel visitors) and cannabis taxes will make up about 4 percent each—relatively small but important revenue streams, officials said.

“They’re not big until you take them out of the mix,” Jeff Frapwell, assistant county executive officer and budget director, said. “They’re not insignificant dollars.”

The budget report estimates total losses to the county from the pandemic at $52 million for the current and the coming fiscal years, including the loss of state sales taxes that were earmarked for public safety under Prop. 172. The county will seek federal reimbursement for up to 75 percent of the shortfall.

By drawing from reserves, general fund balances, Southern California Edison settlement monies and cannabis taxes, the county will save 135 jobs from the cutting block in the coming fiscal year, Frapwell told the board. That includes $6.6 million in cannabis revenues for 42 jobs, he said—18 in the child welfare division of the Department of Social Services, and 24 in the Sheriff’s and Probation departments and District Attorney’s and Public Defender’s offices.

The two supervisors who have most championed the cannabis industry— Steve Lavagnino, who represents the Santa Maria Valley, and Das Williams, who represents Eastern Santa Barbara to the Carpinteria Valley, where residents are clamoring for tighter controls on cannabis greenhouses—said that the revenues from cannabis justified their often unpopular positions.

“I’ve asked myself, ‘Is it worth taking the abuse for supporting the cannabis industry?’” Lavagnino said on Tuesday.

“There’s a lot of negative press and loss of political support. But when I look at the budget this year, I think it’s worth it. I thank our lucky stars it was in place this year. We still have a lot to do to mitigate the impacts of the industry, and that’s why I will continue to work to get it right.”

And in an interview, Williams said: “I do think that all the political abuse I’ve taken in the last couple of years is shown to be worth it, when we’re going to be able to help keep people safe and employed during what is becoming the worst economic downturn in our lifetime.”

But, Williams added, “I remain committed to weeding out folks who can’t adhere to the rules. I’m not going to vote for every operation that’s out there in the Carpinteria Valley. We have standards to maintain.”

The budget that was approved by the board on Tuesday allocates 35 percent of 2020-21 cannabis tax revenues, or $3.7 million, to enforcement and regulation of the industry itself. Specifically, it earmarks $1.7 million for the Sheriff’s Department, $680,000 for administration and tax collection, $531,000 for the District Attorney’s office, $393,000 for Planning & Development, $137,000 for County Counsel and $100,000 for Public Health and as part of the cannabis program.

(Additionally, the industry pays county licensing and permitting fees: in the current fiscal year, these totaled $2.1 million, half of which went to county Planning & Development.)

The board opted not to fund a request from the county Sheriff’s Department for $1.2 million to form a second Cannabis Compliance Team, comprised of one sergeant, four detectives and an administrator. The department’s existing team conducts background checks on cannabis growers and their employees and

carries out raids on illegal operations.

According to the budget report, most of the county’s cannabis revenue is slated for one-time costs “until there is stability of cannabis operations in the county and market impacts are known.”

“We think it’s important not to mainstream the revenue until we have some history and we know which operators make it through the permit licensing process,” Frapwell said.

To date, the county has issued only 20 zoning permits for cannabis cultivation and processing, while 189 applications are in the pipeline. About 260 acres are under cultivation, primarily by growers who claim “legal, non-conforming” status as they apply for county permits.

In all, the county will spend $14.6 million in cannabis tax revenue in the coming fiscal year, including carryover funds from 2018, 2019 and the current fiscal year. In addition to the cannabis-related expenses for enforcement and regulation, the funding to backfill county staff positions, and the new equity fund, the budget will include $3 million in cannabis revenues for Covid-19 response, such as tracking and tracing, paid leave for employees, and temporary shelter and alternative care sites, should there be a major resurgence of the disease.

Finally, cannabis taxes will provide $659,000 for county libraries and $195,000 for two long-range planners during 2020-21. One of the new planners will study utility-scale solar energy, and the other will look at amendments to the cannabis ordinance, Williams said.

The Molekule units use PECO air purification technology to eliminate viruses, bacteria and mold.

Additionally, Molekule’s PECO technology neutralizes terpenes in the air that can cause the characteristic smell of cannabis, according to a statement from the company.

Before installing the five units throughout the facility, Autumn Brands tested Molekule’s PECO technology for three months in late 2019 early 2020. The company hopes that the new units will also help reduce exposure

to viruses in the air, including Covid-19.

Supervisors say “no” to stricter permits for cannabis countywide

BY MELINDA BURNS The county Board of Supervisors tinkered with its cannabis ordinance this week, promising immediate relief to 500 residents of North County canyons but angering many Carpinterians and Buellton-area vintners who said the proposals would do little to restrain an industry they view as running rampant and unchecked.

In its biggest move, the board voted 3-2 in concept to ban commercial cannabis cultivation and processing in rural neighborhoods such as Tepusquet and Cebada Canyons northeast of Sisquoc and Lompoc, respectively, where residents have clamored for such a measure for years. At countless hearings, they have recounted how the generator noise, truck traffic, night lights and “skunky” stench of industrial-scale cannabis was disrupting their country way of life.

“I’m going to say I was wrong, and now is the time we can rectify some of the mistakes we’ve made,” said Supervisor Peter Adam, who represents Orcutt, Lompoc and the Los Alamos Valley.

“We have to allow ourselves, as the policymakers that have to make peace in our county, to go out and fix some of these things.”

The votes came nearly a year after the board asked the county Planning Commission to recommend ways to address the pungent smell of cannabis that wafts into Carpinteria Valley homes and Buellton-area wine tasting rooms, and the conflicts that have arisen over the pesticides used on “legacy” crops, particularly wine grapes and avocados, where cannabis has moved in next door.

But a far-reaching “fix” was not in the cards on Thursday. On the table was a sweeping recommendation by the commission to require stricter zoning permits, called conditional use permits, or CUPs, for all future cannabis projects, with more than 170 applications in the pipeline. These permits would require the projects to be “compatible with” and “not detrimental to” the surrounding neighborhoods.

But on Thursday, the board majority, led by Supervisors Das Williams and Steve Lavagnino, the chief architects of the cannabis ordinance, supported conditional use permits only for some cannabis, and only in the North County.

In recent years, the board has repeatedly voted to overturn or weaken the commission’s efforts to rein in the burgeoning industry.

“It is enormously important to indicate that the future of Carpinteria is dependent upon the reduction of nuisance from marijuana odor but a continuation of the presence of the marijuana business,” said Williams, who represents the Carpinteria Valley, where many residents have complained that the stench of marijuana from cannabis greenhouses with roof vents is making them sick.

“We have had a decimation of our flower industry, and we are in the midst of the worst recession in our lifetimes,” Williams said. “I am anxious to get to the point where I say thumbs up or thumbs down to the operations in Carpinteria.

If we have a CUP process countywide, it will be a long time before we pick through these folks.”

Williams and Lavagnino, who represents the Santa Maria Valley and Tepusquet Canyon, opposed the ban on commercial cannabis cultivation in North County communities that are designated as “existing rural developed

“I think it’s really bad government to have a set of rules and change them when many of these people are at the very end of a long journey we’ve put them through,” Lavagnino said.

Williams called the ban “bargaining against ourselves” and said he was “enormously jaded” by the actions of cannabis critics who tried to unseat him last November and have filed three lawsuits against the board this year.

Williams noted that the board has adjusted its ordinance in the past, banning outdoor cannabis cultivation in the Carpinteria Valley, placing a countywide cap of 1,712 acres on cannabis, and requiring millions of dollars of odor control technology at many operations.

“And I cannot name one person in this entire county who has been satisfied by that,” Williams said. “They have only gotten angrier the more we have tried to accommodate them. They have lied to the press, used the political route, appealed every project and then sued the county.”

Williams said that requiring a conditional use permit would delay the review process in the Carpinteria Valley for years, providing “a cloak for bad actors” who were dragging their feet on odor control.

Williams, Lavagnino and Hart signaled that they would support a more limited change: a conditional use permit requirement only for projects where cannabis cultivation would cover more than 50 percent of the property, and only in the North County. Adam and Hartmann voted no.

In a unanimous vote, the supervisors proposed to ban the outdoor drying and processing of marijuana to help control the strongest odors from crop operations. Under this rule, North County growers would be required either to ship cannabis offsite for processing or construct a building on their property, outfitted with the “best available” odor control technology.

The board also voted unanimously, in concept, to exempt already-approved cannabis projects from the new rules.

Mixed reaction

A public hearing and final board vote on the proposed cannabis ordinance amendments will be scheduled for later this summer, county officials said.

Thursday’s hearing was the continuance of a June 2 hearing on the ordinance. The public submitted more than 600 pages of comments for and against a conditional use permit requirement for all cannabis, and nearly 170 of these were read into the record.

Those in favor of greater regulation included Concerned Carpinterians, a loosely-organized group of 300 residents, business people and farmers; the Santa Barbara County Coalition for Responsible Cannabis, a non-profit group with 200 members and a plaintiff in the cannabis lawsuits against the board; the Carpinteria Valley Association, a preservationist group; city of Carpinteria; Cate School in Carpinteria; city of Goleta; City of Buellton, homeowners’ associations representing the Polo Condos in Carpinteria, the foothills around Old North San Marcos Road and the neighborhoods of San Antonio Creek, More Mesa and Winchester Canyon in the Goleta Valley; the county Farm Bureau, with 800 members; the Grower-Shipper Association of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, representing 170 fruit and vegetable growers; and numerous vintners, including former county Supervisor Brooks Firestone of Los Olivos.

In an interview, Kevin Merrill, a Farm Bureau board member, called the supervisors’ proposed rule changes “a mishmash of regulations.” He said he sympathized with cannabis growers who now may have to adapt to changes mid-stream, but, he said, it’s a “no-win” for grape growers like him, too. The pesticide standard is so high for cannabis, Merrill said, it’s almost impossible for a neighboring farmer to reach it.

“Because of the drift problem, in many cases, it raises havoc,” Merrill said, noting that the Farm Bureau believes cannabis should be grown exclusively indoors and in sealed buildings in the county.

In Carpinteria, members of the Coalition for Responsible Cannabis dismay and anger after the board’s votes and what they said was Williams’ “tirade.”

“I’m very disappointed, very upset,” Anna Carrillo said. “There is nothing

that Das is helping us with – no reduction in the density of cultivation, no increase in buffers, no change in the odor requirements, nothing.”

Paul Ekstrom, a retired Carpinteria firefighter, a coalition board member and a plaintiff in a coalition lawsuit against four greenhouse operators on Foothill Road, now known locally as “Cannabis Row,” said he favors the open sale of cannabis on the market – he just wants growers to put a lid on the offensive skunk-like odors that penetrate his house on Manzanita Street. For the valley, Ekstrom said, the only recourse may be the courts.

Those opposing stricter zoning permits for cannabis included members of the Cannabis Association for Responsible Producers (CARP Growers), representing 12 cannabis operations in the Carpinteria Valley; the North County Farmer’s Guild, a group of 40 cannabis growers; Carpinteria residents who cited the growers’ generous donations to their community in the pandemic; engineers, planners and other professionals employed in the cannabis business, and Lompoc Mayor Jenelle Osborne.

Graham Farrar of CARP Growers said, “The Board of Supervisors is recognizing that there is an upside to the community, having cannabis here.

That’s always been the deal.”

Farrar is the only cannabis greenhouse operator in the valley with a zoning permit, issued for seven acres of cultivation on Casitas Pass Road. He is applying for a permit for his three-acre “grow” on Foothill. Growers do not need stricter regulations that would simply delay permits longer, Farrar said.

“I’m certainly relieved to know that the nine months of work we’ve done to get to an almost-approved stage is not going to be thrown in the trash,” he said.

Farrar said the county conducts odor inspections at his greenhouses on Casitas Pass every quarter, inspections that cannot take place at greenhouses without permits.

“I want them to go to everybody’s farm,” he said. “When that happens, we are going to see better results.”

CUSD employees receive salary bonus

Carpinteria Unified School District employees will receive a $5,000 salary bonus, according to CUSD Superintendent Diana Rigby, who credited receiving the grant to “the perseverance” of Assistant Superintendent Maureen Aliso teacher Jamie Bickford, who Fitzgerald. will retire this year, says farewell The 2018 Immediate Aid to Restart and congratulations to students.

School Operations Program (Restart Program) was authorized to provide assistance to public schools to restart school after the 2018 Thomas Fire. As most of CUSD costs were reimbursed through FEMA and SISC, the district did not qualify for these funds. However, the Restart Program announced in the fall of 2019 that funds were still available. “After much diligence and perseverance, the application for funding to provide salary premiums (bonuses) for employees was approved,” said Rigby. Bonuses will go to all CUSD employees who were employed during the school year of the Thomas Fires (June 2018) and are still in a permanent position as of March 2020.

Family School fifth graders explore ecology

A series of lessons and field trips focused on ecology recently culminated with Carpinteria Family School fifth graders petitioning Carpinteria Unified School District to end the use of Styrofoam lunch trays in local schools. The fifth grade class of LoriLee Collins received a grant from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to take part in the Explore Ecology program. Through the program, the students visited the Water Resource Center, Bonnet Park and took a boat trip to conduct ocean water quality testing.

Students then collected data on the amount of waste produced in their homes in order to gain awareness about their impacts on the environment. They also cleaned up litter in Carpinteria. The students applied their lessons to writing letters to the CUSD School Board to advocate for a reduction of waste in the school district through the elimination of single use Styrofoam cafeteria trays. One letter stated, “...I can only pick up so much garbage.

It is time we as community create less waste in the first place.”

Should we all move to Gallup?

A MONTHLY MUSE MELINDA WITTWER While I’m sheltering in place at home to avoid the Covid-19 virus, my TV keeps inundating me with riots and protests and struggles with racial bias and police brutality. As I’m questioning how and what we can do to bring about positive change, I start thinking about what happened in Gallup, New Mexico, at the beginning of World War II. If nothing else comes from this, I do think you will find this a fascinating and little-known account of how one town took care of all their citizens.

My friend, Shige Miyamura Sasaki, grew up in Gallup. As the librarian, she worked for years in the same junior high as I did. Even though she is now in her 80s, she looks barely over 60, acts younger than most 30-year-olds, and is extremely proud of her Japanese American family.

One day we were discussing the internment camps that ultimately incarcerated roughly 120,000 West Coast Japanese, over 60 percent of them were citizens of the United States. I asked Shige if she had been forced to live in such a camp. This is where she started sharing the story of how the people of Gallup refused to “remove any of their citizens” just because the families of these citizens had originally come from Japan.

Hiroshi Miyamura, Shige’s older brother, was born in Gallup in 1925. His parents had immigrated to the United States and chose Gallup as the place to start their diner called the OK Café.

Hiroshi and his brothers and sisters grew up knowing little about Japan as they immersed themselves in activities with all the other local children. The Miyamura offspring spoke English at home and thought of themselves only as Americans. Then the radio brought news of Pearl Harbor being bombed.

In this small city of 7,000, the 25 Japanese American families were an accepted and integral part of the community—a community that included Slavs, Italians, Finns, Russians, Irish, Greeks, Mexicans, Navajos and Zunis.

Therefore, the town’s sheriff, Dominic “Mickey” Mollica, told the Japanese families that they would be treated like his own Italian family would be. He told the rest of Gallup, “Our Japanese families are citizens here, and we are not going to round them up.” The Gallup City Council met and voted against supporting internment. I have not been able to verify that there were any other towns or cities in the United States that refused to send their Japanese Americans to a camp.

Now here is where truth and fiction mingle. Robert N. Singer wrote a screenplay in 2014 that tells a tale of how the citizens of Gallup saved their Japanese American families from being forced from their homes and into camps in Arkansas. The screenplay involves the sheriff, Major Hollis Barlow, Attorney

In a nutshell, the sheriff and the mayor help Gerry, the attorney, file a Writ of Habeas Corpus to keep Major Barlow from taking the Gallup Japanese Americans to an internment camp. Gerry heads off to Albuquerque with her writ, the Japanese American families all head to the church where they request sanctuary, and the Navajo Indians act as decoys in the church while the Japanese Americans head for the reservation where

Major Hollis has no power.

Gerry finally escapes from being locked in an office on a military base in Albuquerque and talks a pilot into flying her home to Gallup in a two-seat bi-plane just in time to one-up Major Barlow. At the end of all this, a judge issues a decision that for the Japanese American citizens of Gallup, the boundaries of their internment camp would be anywhere they wanted in the state of New Mexico until the end of the war.

I’m not sure how much of this story is true, half-true, or just put into the

screenplay to make it more entertaining.

But this much I know for a fact: Hiroshi “Hershey” Miyamura was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service in the Korean War. He spent two years in a POW camp, but eventually returned to live in Gallup with his wife and three children. This son of Japanese immigrants is as American as it gets.

Which brings me back to this. Whether we as citizens of this country are red, white, black, blue or pink polka-dotted, it shouldn’t matter. If we want our rights respected, we must also respect the rights of others. We must strive for inclusiveness and understanding. The citizens of Gallup as well as the police and town officials knew this in 1942.

Perhaps we can follow their lead.

Alvarez sisters leave their mark on Class of 2020

Since starting at Carpinteria High School, Class of 2020 graduates, twin sisters Savannah and Shaylah Alvarez, have been a breath of fresh air for their coaches. “The twins are amazing,” said Warriors Head Track & Field Coach Van Latham.

“They are hardworking, talented, personable, dedicated, funny, intelligent and responsible— plus many more adjectives.”

The twins started out playing soccer their freshman year, while simultaneously competing for the local AYSO soccer team. Lucy Carleton and Charles Bryant, heads of the Carpinteria girls soccer program, were impressed by them from the start. “Imagine if you’re a coach and you discover that you have a player who can play any position on the field, including goalkeeper, has a great left

foot, is a leading scorer and leads in assists as well, you would be thrilled, right?,” said Carleton who coached them for two years on the JV team.

“So, you can imagine how wonderful it was for me to have all this, times two,” she exclaimed.

The two shined early on. Savannah led the team in scoring and won MVP her freshman year and Shaylah led the squad in scoring her sophomore. Their junior season, the twins moved up to the varsity squad. “Their junior year, they both did great and had to adapt to playing in different positions due to all of the injuries we had,” said Bryant who was their varsity coach for one season.

Then, they went out for the track & field team their freshman year, going on to have fine careers in the sport. Savannah currently holds the school’s sixth best mark of all-time for the girls in the triple jump and is in the number nine spot in the long jump. Shaylah is number two in the long jump and number nine in the triple jump on that same list, according to Athletic.net.

“Going into our first-ever track practice, we had planned to be distance runners, as we were considering running cross country sophomore year, but when we showed up, Coach (Angel) Silva (the distance coach and cross country coach) was running late and we got put in the jumper group,” said Savannah who was named MVP of the team her junior year. Coach Latham would also enter them in sprint relay events during various meets over their careers.

“A lot of our close friends did cross country freshman year and they all had only good things to say about it, despite how difficult of a sport it is,” said Shaylah. “We decided to do it sophomore year just to keep in shape for the next soccer and track season,” she explained of their new endurance endeavor.

“The fact that they played soccer for many years convinced me that they had the potential to be very good cross-country runners,” said Silva.

And that they were. Shaylah was the MVP for

Savannah was a team captain those final two years, and won the Most Inspirational award her junior year, and Most Improved award her sophomore year.

“Both always have great big smiles on the field, track and just walking around the campus together,” concluded Bryant of the twins who also carried 4.0-plus GPAs while competing. In the fall, the twins plan to attend Cal Poly SLO.

Carpinteria High School cross country coach Angel Silva is looking for students interested in joining the team. With studios in Santa Barbara and Ventura, Fit Buddha reopened Friday, June 12, with some guidelines in place. The Great Depression lemon

In the early days of the California Fruit Growers Exchange (CFGE; Sunkist), a perhaps apocryphal story tells that lemon growers were charged a higher fee than their orange growing counterparts for advertising. Oranges were the stars of the citrus industry, easy to peel and eat. The CFGE would teach the world to drink orange juice through the Drink an Orange campaign circa 1915.

But, the lemon? The story goes “Have you ever tried to sell a lemon?” We have a lemon law for automobiles, a bad movie is described as a lemon, so maybe there is truth to the story. But things turned around for the lemon during the Great Depression of the 1930s, and this was a good thing for Carpinteria.

The lemon industry reached its apex in the ‘30s and ‘40s. Carpinteria farmers of the era remember the good economic times brought on by the lemon. In an interview, George Bliss, Jr. said, “In Carpinteria, we did not suffer the harsh conditions brought on by the Great Depression.” This apparently did not stop some farmers from taking advantage of the situation by paying lower wages to their employees. People needed work!

Lawrie Bailard contended that the Bailard Ranch always paid their employees “lemon wages” and never “Depression wages.” It is in this environment that Dust Bowl families descended into Carpinteria—think “Grapes of Wrath”

by John Steinbeck—competing with Mexican labor in the fields and packinghouses. While the Hubbard/Carpinteria Lemon Association stuck largely with its Mexican work force, the Carpinteria Mutual Citrus Association turned to a Dust Bowl one. What was the allure of the once scorned lemon during the Great Depression?

Actually, lemons were highly valued during the Gold Rush years in California. They kept scurvey away from the miners, selling for an incredible $1 apiece! Health benefits aside, the lemon had great value for Depression era cash-strapped families, as well. There was the pitcher of lemonade, of course, that could be stretched-out much farther than the orange. And, the lemon could be made into soap, cleaning solution for removing stains, making furniture polish, detering insects, washing fruits and vegetables, making oils, sorbets and pies, and the list goes on.

In the 20th century, many farmers were college educated. In Carpinteria,

They were trained and ready to phase out the lemon when its time came, or the land needed replenishing by switching out one crop for another. The avocado had been waiting in the wings for a long time. The fruit had been cultivated in Carpinteria as the “alligator pear” in the previous century but had not been successful commercially. But the times were changing.

Today, Carpinterians celebrate the alligator pear annually at the Carpinteria Avocado Festival. And, the lemon? In Carpinteria, the sour fruit that meant so much to the Valley in the first half of the 20th century seems to be largely forgotten culturally, just as the lima bean and walnut were forgotten after the rise of the lemon. Nearby, however, Goleta continues to honor the lemon at its annual Goleta Lemon Festival.

Black lives matter. and history books, so we don’t forget the trauma and inequality they caused and perpetuated.

So many of us have protested with or for our black brothers and sisters and thought deeply about what part we can play in our own lives and communities to make the world is more fair. As a white person, I have the privilege of thinking about issues of race and then choosing to set that aside and think about something else. I can walk around in the world not worried about being treated poorly because of the color of my skin. So many of us don’t want to set this issue aside; we want to be a part of positive change.

One difference we can make is to raise our children well. How about those thoughtful and peaceful student-led protests in Carpinteria and Santa Barbara a couple weekends ago? Thank you, Isa Alarcon, Laura Flores, Joana Romero, Jackie Urrutia and others, for providing a way for so many to show their support for black people. I’m inspired by your leadership.

The Carpinteria Children’s Project would like to provide some resources for parents on ways to talk to children about race and inequality. These can be difficult conversations to have, and so important. An issue swept under the rug or minimized is not addressed. On the websites listed below, you’ll find a helpful article, a parent toolkit and a list of books for children. We have purchased some of these books and they are available for loan; please contact me if you would like to borrow them.

Let me start by telling you that I grew up in Richmond, Virginia, the capital of the Southern Confederate states that fought for slavery in the civil war of the 1860s. In downtown Richmond, looming statues of the South’s Civil War “heroes” dominate important streets. For over 130 years, those statues of military leaders poised to fight have looked down on all of us and have been a threatening symbol to many black people and offensive to many.

And even when people expressed the pain caused by those statues, others spoke of history and how we can’t rewrite it, and the statues and the dominance they symbolized stayed. During the past couple of weeks of Black Lives Matters protests, those statues have been marked with peace symbols, “Justice for All,” “Black Lives Matter,” and other words of rage and hurt. Covered with graffiti, they are now symbols of what I hope will remain a different conversation, one in which the voices of those who feel the daily, profound trauma of racial arrogance and a history of deep injustice are invited to speak and are actively listened to.

The governor of Virginia and mayor of Richmond called for the statues to be removed last week. We can understand history differently and more fairly, and we will. We can remove the symbols of past injustices and put them in museums

Firefighters fight for LLS research

Wearing full gear and air tanks, Carpinteria-Summerland firefighters climbed 69 flights of stairs this past Saturday, June 13, in the 29th annual Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Firefighter Stairclimb. This year, instead of climbing Seattle’s Columbia Center where the event usually takes place, Covid-19 brought the fight—and flights—home where Rincon Fitness hosted participating firefighters Johan Nillson and Kenan Marting on their stair climber machines to complete the challenge and raise money for LLS. Nillson and Marting joined thousands of firefighters across the country in a “virtual stair climb” that Rincon Fitness live streamed to help promote the event.

Once the challenge got rolling, other Carpinteria-Summerland firefighters decided to join the challenge, gearing up and stepping onto the stair climbers to climb the simulated sky scraper. “It was great to be able to virtually compete with firefighters across the country as well as our fellow firefighters who joined in,” said Marting. “I think it says a lot about the fitness of our Carpinteria firefighters to be able to jump in and put up competitive times with climbing 69 stories in full turnout gear and breathing off an air tank. Most importantly though, we were able to be a small part of the almost $3 million dollars raised overall for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.”

A woman drove into the “cone zone” on the Linden Avenue overpass. A traffic stop was initiated, and she was found to be on probation and driving with a suspended California driver’s license.

She consented to a search of the vehicle, even though the passenger was on parole, and she was found in possession of meth and a used meth pipe. She was cited and released.

Friday, June 12

12:32 a.m. / False Tabs / Casitas Pass Road at Hwy 101

A traffic stop was initiated for a lighting violation and the driver was found to have a suspended California driver’s license. He also admitted to knowing the vehicle was displaying a false registration tab. During a search of the vehicle, a box of Corona seltzer was found. The passenger was also found to be hiding a bottle of tequila under the passenger seat. Both were cited for the miscellaneous violations and released.

The vehicle was towed.

1:18 p.m. / Sexual Harassment / 6000 block Jacaranda Way

The reporting party received numerous text messages propositioning her for sexual acts. The reporting party did not know who was sending the messages and an incident report was taken.

9:13 p.m. / Dope Violations / Hwy 150 at Hwy 101

A woman left her work and was known to have a suspended California driver’s license, with service needed.

A traffic stop was initiated, and she admitted to having meth and a meth pipe. She was cited and a licensed driver responded to drive the vehicle.

Saturday, June 13

12:06 a.m. / Drug Possession / 5700 block Carpinteria Avenue

A man was stopped for having front tinted windows. The man was returning to a motel and admitted to being on Orange County probation. During a search of the vehicle, deputies located meth and a meth pipe. A records check showed the man’s California driver’s license was suspended. He was cited

A deputy observed a vehicle traveling at a high speed westbound on Carpinteria Avenue at Linden Avenue. The vehicle continued west on Carpinteria Avenue and increased its speed to over 80 MPH. The suspect drove to the west end of Carpinteria Avenue and turned around and then traveled eastbound on Carpinteria Avenue. Deputies drove behind the vehicle but were unable to get close enough to read the license plate or get the make of the vehicle. The suspect got onto the southbound Highway 101 freeway and drove at speeds of over 120 MPH. For the safety of the deputies and the public, the pursuit was terminated. A Be on the Lookout of the suspect vehicle was provided to California Highway Patrol and Ventura County agencies.

10:48 a.m. / Theft / 1000 block Lavender Court

A man called to report his locked vehicle had been broken into and various items were taken. He provided a list of the items taken and estimated the total

value of the items to be $1,150. However, the man did not have any suspect information at the time. He was provided with the case number and the incident was documented.

12:41 p.m. / Found Ammunition / 4600 block Carpinteria Avenue

A man contacted deputies and stated he recently moved into a home on Foothill Road and found eight rounds of rifle ammunition while cleaning the garage.

The ammunition was retrieved and booked for destruction per the reporting party’s request.

5:30 p.m. / Theft from Auto / 5400 block 8th Street

Unknown suspect(s) entered the victim’s unlocked vehicle and stole cash and documents. No suspect information.

9:00 p.m. / Hit and Run / Foothill Road

Victim reported that an unknown driver and unknown type vehicle rammed his car from behind and fled the scene. According to the reporting party, the suspect vehicle continued to ram his car, but the reporting party never called 911 or got a description of the vehicle or driver.

Auctioneer hero raises money and hope CVN

MISSION POSSIBLE LAUREN GRAF Frequent CVN readers may recall articles in recent weeks featuring auctions supporting local businesses amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Mission Possible took time to speak with the volunteer spearheading these efforts, Annette Fisher, a beloved community member who is honored to help her home and Carpinteria family. “Giving back, the love, support and the true beauty of Carpinteria, breathes life into me,” Fisher said. “I feel incredibly blessed and grateful.”

Fisher is battling advanced stages of cancer, but she is still driven to dedicate time and energy toward volunteering.

When Covid-19 temporarily closed the doors of local businesses, Fisher began organizing online auctions to support those facing financial hardship. Local bids have raised thousands for the community, from nonprofits to small businesses owners. Her most recent auction for the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History raised $2,000, and she continues to identify those in need of assistance for future fundraisers.

In speaking with Mission Possible, Fisher shared her passion for volunteering and how her love of Carpinteria inspires her to pay it forward.

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your life in Carpinteria?

I was a single mom. I didn’t have much, but I was a hard worker and never asked for a handout or assistance from anyone. I worked hard and always wanted my children to be proud of me.

I wanted them to know whatever life dealt us, we choose our destiny through hard work, faith and a positive attitude.

I wanted my kids to think about others, and not to be selfish.

Describe some of the volunteer work that you have been doing lately for local businesses and organizations.

My most recent goal was to help local businesses that were being impacted the most by having to close their doors because of Covid-19. I started with Carpinteria Nails and raised $422, Seastrand raised $419, Alcazar Theatre raised $1,951, Carpinteria Arts Center raised $1,932 with an additional $400 was donated by 93013 Fund for a total of $2,332. All the businesses that were highlighted have been so grateful; every little bit helps in times like these. I wish I could do more.

For the auction, all items have been donated. I am blessed that we have a special group that donates for every fundraiser, and my husband supports me and my passion. He never says a word when I do local shopping for the fundraiser; he just smiles. We have everything from artwork, Pampered Chef, mosaic yard art, gift certificates to local restaurants, wine, jewelry and more. I pair the items at a cost that is low enough that someone can afford it, and still help the business. All items are priced below value. I want it to be a win-win for the community and the businesses.

Annette Fisher Do you work with anyone else in gathering auction items or coordinating the auctions, or do you do most of this work on your own?

I took it upon myself to reach out and start these fundraisers. I wanted to give back to show love and support.

What type of volunteering did you do before the Covid-19 pandemic began?

I volunteered at the Avofest merchandise booth for two years prior to becoming merchandise chair. I am now VP on the board. I have done fundraisers for Forrest Holt, our beautiful and precious child in this community who has taught me a lot. It’s not what we are born with, but again love, support and positivity.

What inspired you to begin your volunteer work to fundraise for local businesses and organizations?

I was inspired to volunteer because I feel blessed to live in a community that’s all about love, giving back and supporting one another. I was diagnosed a little over a year ago with an incurable cancer. This community did a fundraiser and significantly offset my medical bills.

Mike and Debi Copus not only hosted the fundraiser but purchased me a scooter to help me when I had significant immobility for a time. I have a lot to be grateful for and feel incredibly blessed to call Carpinteria my home and my family.

I can honestly say, I have never felt so loved and supported in my entire life.

What are some things that our readers could do if they are interested in volunteering?

Follow your heart and passion; you will find the most amazing inner satisfaction ever! What is your passion—animals, movies, Avofest, mentoring…?

It is so important to live our life with meaning, to make a positive difference in the world.
