In the run up to the Nov. 6 elections, the League of Women Voters will hold voter registration drives at the Carpinteria Library, pictured, the Farmer’s Market and Albertsons, among other locations.

Voter registration drive at Albertsons to be held on Sept. 25

On National Voters Registration day (NVRd), Sept. 25, the League of Women Voters will be registering any qualified person from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Albertsons, 1018 Casitas Pass Road. Individuals who are between age 16 and 18 can preregister and receive voting information until their 18th birthday, the legal voting age, when they’ll receive a ballot.

“Founded in 2012, NVRD is designed to create an annual moment when the entire nation focuses on registering Americans to exercise their most basic right—the right to vote,” states Jane Benefield in a press release for the League of Women Voters.

“More than two million people have registered to vote since the inaugural NVRD.” The next elections will be held on Nov. 6, 2018. For more information contact janebenefield@cox.net/.

5K Charity Walk to benefit St. Joes

St. Joseph Conference of the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul is gearing up for the Friends of the Poor Charity Walk on Saturday, Sept. 22. The walk is part of the eighth annual Friends of the Poor Charity Walk being conducted across the nation.

Fire District welcomes new chief

The Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District has announced that Greg Fish will be the new district fire chief, replacing Chief Ray Navarro whose contract expires at the end of this year.

Chief Fish joins the district with 31 years of fire service.

“The district is honored and proud to have Chief Fish join the CarpinteriaSummerland team,” said Board President Pete Thompson. “Chief Fish brings an extensive and comprehensive set of skills to the district that will further enhance our service to the citizens of Carpinteria and Summerland. His enthusiasm is contagious, we are very fortunate to have him here.”

Chief Fish served as the fire chief for the City of Glendale, the fourth-largest city in Los Angeles County. His department served over 205,000 residents and responded to over 19,000 incidents within the city and nearby jurisdictions yearly.

Greg was born in the Los Angeles area and earned a BA in Organizational Leadership from Woodbury University and a Master of Public Administration from California State University Northridge.

He was with the Glendale Fire Department since he was hired as a firefighter in 1987.

“I am excited and humbled to be part of the Carpinteria-Summerland team. I look forward to learning how the department can better serve the community and leading that effort,” said Chief Fish.

Greg Fish will be the new district fire chief starting Oct. 1 Over 30 highly qualified candidates were evaluated in a competitive, nationwide search conducted by Avery and Associates, who specialize in executive recruitment.

After two years of service, Chief Navarro will be stepping down. “The district is very thankful for Chief Navarro’s service during this time and wish him well in his future endeavors,” said Thompson.

Chief Fish will commence employment with the district on October 1, 2018.

VanWingerdens named Avocado Festival honorary chairs

Ed and Nadia VanWingerden have built a life around family and agriculture in the Carpinteria Valley. This year, the VanWingerdens will be the 32nd Annual California Avocado Festival’s honorary chairs.

“I’m honored, by all means,” said Ed. “Avocados are a big part of Carpinteria and it’s great to be amongst past honorary chairs.”

The VanWingerdens planted their first five acres of avocados in 1980 as a buffer for their flower nurseries. Today, they grow 50 acres of commercial avocados, 45 of which are certified organic.

At the VanWingerden’s Everbloom Flowers, the family grows flowers, avocados and cannabis. “The new and old of Carpinteria,” Ed said.

Originally from Holland, Ed immigrated to Carpinteria in 1967 at the age of 11. His Dutch family members were lettuce and tomato farmers in greenhouses in Naaldwijk for 300 years. The family relocated to Carpinteria seeking more opportunities in what Ed described as, “a country with less bureaucracy and more opportunities to grow.”

Nadia is of Ukranian-Canadian descent and while you might see her slinging avocados at the Santa Barbara Farmer’s Market, she is also the founder and owner of Sage Hill Farm, a small organic poultry farm. “I have chickens,

turkeys, heritage turkeys, rabbit, ducks, quail and Guinea fowl,” said Nadia.

“I’ve been at the farmers market for over 30 years. I started selling flowers, then certified organic avocados, and then as the business grew, my poultry products.”

Nadia is also an English as a Second Language teacher at the Children’s Project of Carpinteria. “I’ve always been a teacher. I used to teach Spanish and now I’m so honored to be able to serve what I have considered the marginalized in the community, helping people to have more control of their lives through language,” said Nadia. “It’s a complete balance.

The honorary chair title was a surprise for Nadia. “It came out of nowhere,” she said. “It will be interesting to participate and get an inside view of the nuts and bolts of the festival.” Nadia is also looking forward to promoting the Avocado Festival with the Latino and Hispanic population in Carpinteria.

The VanWingerdens know Carpinteria avocados well. “Carpinteria avocados are special,” said Ed. “We can leave them on the trees longer than most areas, especially compared to warmer climates like San Diego. So they have a higher oil content and it’s a more flavorful piece of fruit.”

Letters Support the library, vote ‘yes’ on X

I strongly support Measure X. A 1.25 percent increase on items, food not included, is not too much when you consider it is to maintain streets, creeks, parks and community services, like the library and humanitarian programs. It seems a very conservative approach to me. If it does not pass in the November election, the losses to the community we love will be quite noticeable. You won’t like it, and you will notice these losses far more than the pennies Measure X will cost.

Our Carpinteria Library has a sustainability issue. In case you do not know, there hasn’t been state funding for libraries for years. A lot of people I talk to are surprised by that. Additionally, the City of Santa Barbara continues to charge our library more each year, and the County of Santa Barbara’s per capita funding is well known to be low in county-by-county comparisons.

The Friends of the Carpinteria Library have consistently filled the budget gaps.

The bookstore generates good vibes as well as a steady income stream—but it is not enough. As an all-volunteer operation, receipts go directly to keeping the doors open and the library staffed. The City has helped our library stay open in recent years, but without Measure X passing, the City will not have the funds to support social services like our beloved library. In any scenario presented, without Measure X, an investment paid for by visitors and community members alike, we will lose the library as we have come to know it.

It’s just my opinion, but I wanted to share it. Libraries are more than a place to store books. Our library provides vital services and has an important place in our lives. Please be sure and vote YES on X to support the needs of our community.

Our prolific opinion writer Ms. Thorn has really gone down the white nationalist rabbit hole. Her quotes, “leftist utopia, echo chamber media, etc” (“No dog whistle here,” Vol. 24, No. 50) lead me to believe she is not only watching the Fox News propaganda machine, but reading the gibberish espoused by radical, right-wing conspiracy theorists.

It is laughable that she labels herself and Trump as “Constitutional Republicans” when it is well known that Trump has never read the entire Constitution or the Bible, but has to rely on his minions to explain them to him and to walk back his ignorant statements on a daily basis. His daily attacks on our free press, national intelligence agencies and anyone who criticizes him while praising dictators like Putin is a true indication of where his sympathies lie. Although she always criticizes and berates socialism, I suspect she partakes of both Social Security and Medicare. So, I also ask that voters choose wisely.

Our current City Council has done a fine job of watching out for our city over

the many years they have served. I appreciate their service to our community.

However, I believe it is wise to allow for new voices and ideas to help guide our city. Our federal government only allows for two terms for president. Our state government as well has limits on the number of terms our governor and state legislators may serve. I feel those term limits have allowed fresh voices to be heard.

Several of our current council members have had multiple terms. Given that we are now facing a possible sales tax increase, our business corridor is suffering and industries are changing in our community, I think it is time for fresh voices on our City Council.

Most of us know Roy Lee from Uncle Chen Restaurant. We know him as an excellent businessman and family man.

Roy has successfully guided his family’s business through consistency, quality and attention to details. I believe that we can count on Roy to deliver the same consistency, quality and attention to details to the City Council. Roy Lee knows what it takes to be a good businessman and he will bring the same wisdom to our council. I support Roy Lee for Carpinteria City Council.

Mr. King’s letter (“Identical earth needed to prove global warming,” Vol. 24, No. 48) claims there isn’t enough scientific evidence to support climate change because there is no comparable world with which to compare events. Comparing identical groups is but one form of scientific inquiry. In the absence of this, Mr. King says that we don’t know that climate change is occurring and, presumably, should do nothing about it. In other words, ignore the other evidence we see, feel and can measure. Mr. King seems to knows a little about science, which suggests an old adage: a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

There isn’t enough space in this piece to deal with Mr. King’s other self-serving comments calling taxation “theft,” his assertion that “most folks” don’t care about the law and the “sanctity of personal property,” by which he may mean not wanting to pay taxes.

In another letter in the same issue, “Who killed Mollie Tibbets?,” Mr. Roscoe states that God “doesn’t allow for idiocy and hatred …ignorance and blindness,” then connects this with a girl in Iowa who was killed by “a violent illegal immigrant from Mexico,” connecting this to the “open border policies” of “liberals.” Look in the mirror, Mr. Roscoe, for

The goal of Antifa is to stop neo-Nazis and white supremacists from gaining a platform rather than to promote a specific Antifa agenda. Bless our town, even the “leftists” in it.

Stacy Ann Ryan 11/20/1961 – 8/26/2018

Stacy Ann Ryan was born in Pasadena, California on Nov. 20, 1961 to Michael Libera and JoAnn Zimmerman and passed away at 2 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018 at Serenity House in Santa Barbara.

Stacy graduated from San Marcos High School in 1978. She worked as a secretary and office manager for a cosmetics distributor in Santa Barbara, and most recently as accounts manager of Cycle News Publishing in Huntington Beach, California. Stacy loved life, time with her family and going to restaurants with her daughter Ellie. She enjoyed music and concerts, following sports, and was a good swimmer and skier. We are grateful for the gifts she has given us and the memories that involved all her family.

We are grateful for the care given to her at Serenity House, Cottage Hospital, Ridley-Tree Cancer Center, UCLA Medical Center and the many physicians and specialists in Santa Barbara.

Stacy is survived by her daughter Eleanore “Ellie” Ryan of Sacramento, California and her son Sgt. Richard (Samantha) Smith of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; and her grandchildren children Aidan, Kaelyn and Scarlett Smith. She is also survived by her father Michael H. Libera of Carpinteria; her stepmother Pam Libera of Solvang; her mother JoAnn Zimmerman of Minden, Nevada; her father-in-law Chuck Ryan; her mother-in-law Susie Ryan of Redding, California; her sister Karen Libera of Carpinteria; her daughter Amanda Torres of Bullhead City, Arizona; her daughter, Kelsea (Kaelah) Matthews currently teaching in Thailand; her son Casey (Mari) Mathews of San Diego; her brother, Brian (Candice), niece Stella and nephew Cody of Solvang, California; and her brother Kevin Libera, niece Emily and nephew Michael John. Stacy was preceded in death by her sister Kristin Libera Hamor in 2017.

Stacy Ann Ryan received the Last Sacraments from Fr. Stephen Downes in one of her last stays in Cottage Hospital. Her last viewing by family and friends was at Serenity House and a burial will be held at Carpinteria Cemetery.

September is National Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month and suicide rates are on a dramatic rise, both locally and globally.

Santa Barbara County lost 61 lives to suicide in 2017 and as of July, 2018 we have lost 28 lives.

In 2017, the most common form of suicide in Santa Barbara County was by gunshot, followed by hanging, overdose and railroad.

According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff Department, there were seven suicides among people younger than age 20; 20 suicides among ages 20 to 40; 30 suicides among ages 40 to 60; and 26 suicides among people over 60.

Many individuals contemplating suicide don’t seek help or have resources available to them, even if desired (Stanley, Columbia University, 2018).

Studies have shown that people who attempted suicide but survived, say they wished they had never tried to commit suicide. Additionally, a May 2018 (JAMA Psychiatry) article supports that early intervention services reduce suicide rates.

This is why prevention and awareness are the key to helping those suffering.

Don’t be afraid to talk about suicide.

Talking about suicide does not make a person more suicidal. It may even help to diminish the person’s desire to proceed with suicide.

What can you do to help someone eliminate suicidal thoughts? There are

City to explore dogfriendly measures

In a vote that will please many canine companions and their owners, during the Sept. 10, 2018 City Council meeting, council members voted unanimously to approve the authorization for staff to pursue certain dog-friendly measures.

The approval of this item means that staff will now explore the option to amend the City’s Municipal Code to grant more offleash opportunities and to commence a study which would consider the creation of a dog park in Carpinteria.

Speaking on behalf of this agenda item were members of the Carpinteria Dog Owners Group or C-DOG which was formed last winter by community members looking to promote the creation of safe places for owners to exercise, train and socialize their dogs.

C-DOG, co-chair Erin Milne spoke of the groups’ desire to partner with the city to create dog-friendly spaces. C-DOG board member Cyndi Burt focused on the need for these areas, or special offleash hours not just for the dogs, but for their human companions as well, stating, “There is no doubt a need for off leash hours here in Carpinteria; it’s great for dogs and great for dog owners.”

Dual Language Immersion program yielding benefits one year in

The first cohort of students in Carpinteria Unified School District’s Dual Language Immersion program completed kindergarten last June, and the initial findings from school administrators and academic partners at UCSB are encouraging. Despite significant impacts on the 2017-18 school year from the Thomas Fire and Jan. 9 debris flows, the 48 DLI kindergarteners at Canalino Elementary School showed above-average gains in both Spanish and English.

Dr. Matt Quirk of UCSB presented findings from the Canalino DLI program’s first year at the CUSD school board meeting on Aug. 28. Tracking changes in students’ language proficiency in both Spanish and English across the school year from fall to spring, UCSB graduate students discovered that the English-only speakers gained a full proficiency level in Spanish while retaining a mean 80th percentile rank in English language proficiency—in other words, English-speaking students did not fall behind in English. English learners experienced a 2.3 percent rise on average in their English test rankings. National averages show that students in DLI programs exceed academic expectations by fifth grade and beyond, outperform peers in both languages and experience other benefits as well.

A major goal of the DLI program at Canalino is to have English learners get reclassified as fluent English speakers by fifth grade. “Secondary to that goal,” Canalino Principal Jaime Persoon said at the meeting, “is to provide non-Spanish speakers the opportunity to acquire the language.” But another crucial outcome of the program, Persoon noted, “is the collaboration of families from all linguistic, economic and cultural backgrounds.”

Continuing, Persoon said, “We have discovered in just one year that giving (Spanish-speaking) families a level of linguistic comfort and accessibility in our schools has dramatically increased parental engagement as measured by parent volunteerism in classrooms, on field trips and most evident in student school attendance and monthly parent meetings for DLI.” With Latinos representing approximately 80 percent of the student body in Carpinteria’s elementary schools and 50 percent of the city’s population, Persoon stated “This outcome is highly significant not only for our school culture and climate, but for our community at large, which will benefit from this model of collaboration, communication and integration.” Spanish- speaking students in DLI programs across the state of California perform academically on par with their English-speaking counterparts in high school, while Spanish speakers in other school programs tends to underperform.

Several schools in California offer a certification of bi-literacy with a high school diploma for DLI programs that are kindergarten through grade 12. Numerous parents of DLI students at Canalino hope to see a DLI program continue at Carpinteria Middle and High schools, as students will be prepared to pursue

At the Aug. 20 school board member Maureen Claffey read a press release by Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, extolling the virtues of studying a second language and calling for expansion of DLI programs (quadrupling them by 2030), and Claffey said it’s exciting to see CUSD ahead of the curve in terms of the state’s expectations. Board member Andy Shaeffer noted that “the gains are impressive… it’s promising. I think this is the future of public education in California.” School board president Michelle Robertson added that DLI in Carpinteria offered a “promising direction” and a “vision of the school climate” in terms of potential social/emotional benefits from improved engagement of both students and parents.

DLI classes at Canalino are selected by lottery, and are made up of eight Spanishspeaking children, eight Spanish- and English-speakers and eight English-only speakers. Kindergarten teachers only speak Spanish in their classrooms, and 10 percent of the school day is given to English instruction for Spanish-language speakers. Over the six years of elementary school, the ratio of Spanish to English instruction goes down by 10 percent each year until fifth grade, when instruction will be given 50 percent in Spanish and 50 percent in English.

Carpinteria Beautiful has awarded Barry and Rhea Sullivan of 1342 Trieste Lane the September “Looking Good Award.” About three years ago, Barry and Rhea decided that it was time for a change. They weren’t really looking forward to all the work, but the Carpinteria Valley Water District had a credit rebate that caught their interest. If you removed your lawn and replaced it with drought tolerant plants you received a rebate. To go about it, the Sullivans contacted Rhonda Gutierrez at the Water District, she came to the house and walked the Sullivans through all the details on how to qualify for the rebate. The Sullivans found Gutierrez to be very helpful and they called on her several times to make sure they were on the right track. In addition to the Water District rebate, they were also able to qualify for a State of California rebate.

Rhea started a file with clippings of succulent gardens, newspapers, magazines, advertisements, etc. She sketched the front yard a couple of times to decide how the layout should look and worked with their gardener, Luis Donato, who was also full of helpful ideas. The project took about three months and they say that the pleasure it has given them has been “unsurpassable.”

Next week I will sever my right arm from my body, at least that’s what it feels like. In actuality, I’m taking my son to college in Washington state. This baby, who is now noticeably taller than I am unless I don my 4-inch heels (which I can do as needed), has done a great job growing up. He’s ready to take the next step in his journey. I’m stepping back, watching and learning as he makes choices I wouldn’t have predicted when he was shorter than I was, and choices that are his own. This is

the way it’s supposed to be. All the right things are happening. And it’s really, really hard. Just for me, not for him, which is also the way it’s supposed to be. Below is an excerpt of the long self-indulgent letter I am writing him to mark this life transition.

My son, I can’t wait to see how you keep doing your good in the world. Maybe you will be a force for kindness in a little corner of the world, or maybe you will stand in a corner from which you look out at a whole lot of the world and do your part from there. Both are important.

Now, I’ve told you at least a hundred times that your executive function isn’t fully developed until you are 26, and I have the experience edge so feel fully justified in leaving you at college with a few words of wisdom. I know you’ve heard this before but don’t forget it when you are away: If you have even an inkling that something you are considering

If you still think it’s a good idea, then go ahead.

Here’s more advice that isn’t as familiar to you.

Maya Angelou put it perfectly, “‘I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” People will sense what you are like before they decide what they think about you.

How you treat people near and far matters; lead with loving kindness. Carefully choose the people you are close to and realize that quality relationships take quality time and effort, and there is no substitute for that time and effort.

Look out for yourself too. You deserve your time and effort. Notice what your body feels like and honor it, even when the feeling is unpleasant and your goal is to notice it and move on. Listen to your gut, and don’t override it lightly.

Many people who brag about how much they drink and take other risks are exaggerating because they want people to pay attention to them. Some aren’t exaggerating, and some need immediate help. Never hesitate to dial 911. Help organize the groups of kids that stick together at parties and look out for each other until everyone is safely home. I remember my

father saying to me when I went off to college, “You may be tempted to eat Ramen noodles to save a few bucks or a trip to the cafeteria, but don’t do it. You won’t feel as good or think as well.” He’s right. Also exercise helps, pretty much no matter what the problem is. Don’t text and walk. (Do as I say, kid, not as I do!)

Life is all about choices. Make your choices intentionally, and you will still make mistakes.

When you make one, own it and do what you can to make it right, then move on. I’ll always have your back. I’ll be hanging on your every word, watching with love as you navigate college and all that comes with it. And if you need a listening ear, just say when.

Say “yes and” to improv at the Alcazar

Now in its seventh year, the Alcazar Theatre’s Improv Workshop kicks off its next eight-week session on Sept. 25.

Veteran improv guru Tom Mueller will be leading the players in developing their craft, creativity and confidence. CVN conducted a Q & A to learn more about what makes Mueller tick and why to say “yes and” to improv.

How would you describe your hometown and childhood?

I was born in Lafayette, Indiana and had a nomadic childhood in the Midwest.

(My father worked for Standard Oil and kept getting promoted and moved to new locations.) Then, when I was 15, we moved to Geneva, Switzerland, where I had the great good fortune to attend the International School for my sophomore through senior years. Throughout my childhood I was surrounded by books and avid readers. My favorite characters were Huck Finn and Robin Hood.

Where did you study improv?

In college, I majored in French and I have a B.A. and M.A. My exposure to theater began when I was a child. My earliest recollection of being in a play was in Cub Scouts. I played a pirate captain. Improv came later, at an acting workshop in the ‘60s. We used it as an exercise to support scripted performances. My interest in improv grew in the ‘80s, when I took a workshop with Paul Sills, the first director of Second City. In 1989, I co-founded Ventura Area Theatre Sports (now known as Ventura Improv Company). I’ve also studied with Keith Johnstone, whose seminal book “Impro,” published in 1979, set out a foundational approach to improvisation. I have had the pleasure of attending many of Johnstone’s workshops—in Calgary, San Francisco, Irvine and Ventura, where he has visited us several times.

What do you love most about being an improv performer?

The teamwork. Players are always supportive and positive. Teamwork is the cornerstone of improv, as it is of theater in general. In improv, since there is no script, you look to your partner for support. And scenes are made up moment to moment. It is thrilling to be on the edge of failure.

Teaching is for me more fulfilling than performing. I remember a young, timid woman in my workshop years ago who surprised herself in a show by standing stage center and improvising a love song.

Seeing that was better than performing.

It was like catnip for me.

How the largest trash pick-up event in the world was born

living the green life erin maker Coastal Cleanup Day is this Saturday, and while I wrote about it several years ago, it seems like a good time to revisit the origins of the largest international volunteer event focusing on the environment and the continued importance of environmental education.

As I have discussed frequently, much of the global environmental movement started as grassroots efforts, birthed out of citizen concern for something close to them. Coastal Cleanup Day started in 1984 when a woman named Judie Nelson took a walk on a beach in Oregon and became concerned about the amount of plastic debris she saw washing up on her local shore. Nelson decided to take action and organize a cleanup. That first year, 2,800 volunteers showed up at beach cleanups along the coast of Oregon, and Coastal Cleanup Day was born.

Today, the international event draws hundreds of thousands of volunteers who collect millions of pounds of trash around the globe. Locally, each year volunteers conduct cleanups of our beaches and creeks, while collecting data that helps determine what items are the most problematic, helping focus education efforts to

reduce litter and increase recycling.

Santa Barbara Creek Week grew out of similar concerns on a local level. In 1998, beach closures motivated the creation of Santa Barbara County Project Clean Water with the goal of protecting public health and enhancing environmental quality in watersheds and on beaches.

Community stakeholders, environmental organizations, the County of Santa Barbara and cities of Santa Barbara and Carpinteria were all partners in this initial project. Creek Week started as a collaborative event between many of the local environmental and community groups involved in Project Clean Water, and was initially sponsored by the County and City of Santa Barbara (Carpinteria and Goleta joined as organizers and sponsors later). That first year, activities included tours of the Carpinteria Salt Marsh, bird watching and other events that continue to be an important part of Creek Week.

Today, as in that first year and each year since, Creek Week is a chance for community members, environmental groups and local agencies to work together to educate and have fun.

I sometimes hear people question environmental regulations and their impact. Most environmental regulations started as a volunteer movement to address a problem, and Coastal Cleanup Day is a great example of that. We live in a community where people take pride in the local environment and keeping this small beach town clean, and yet trash still ends up in our local creeks and on the beaches. There are multiple ways for trash to get there, including windblown

out of a waste receptacle, a forgotten wrapper from a chaotic beach exit, or brought there by wildlife who pilfered it elsewhere. Because we know that trash has an impact on the environment, we notice this.

Understanding how every action we take has consequences on the environment seems like second nature to some, but isn’t to everyone. This is where the importance of environmental education comes in, and why volunteer events like Coastal Cleanup Day and Creek Week are successful on multiple levels. It’s easy to get swept up in our busy lives and drive those four blocks to run an errand rather than walk, or toss your vegetables in the trash instead of composting. I was lucky enough to have teachers when I was in elementary school that stressed that we live within an ecosystem, not outside of it.

That message has stuck with me. It is why I often end every walk with trash that I have picked up along the way. Each piece of trash we pick up is one less that might end up in local water ways, but it also helps set an example for others. And that is how both environmental education and events like Coastal Cleanup Day start.

The Carpinteria Education Foundation hosted its 26th Annual Carp-A-Cabana event with the goal of establishing an art fund to ensure students in the Carpinteria Unified School District have access to quality art instruction. With no consistent arts instruction since 2004, Platinum sponsor Mac Brown Excavating donated $50,000 to provide Carpinteria public school students Mojitos, daiquiris and Cuba Libres help recall the days of old havana, along with Rincon lessons in visual arts, dance, theater and vocal music Brewery’s “Mac Brown Ale” and “Warrior Red” at the hosted bar, towed in for the event by an beginning in the 2018-2019 school year. Warriors lead the Patriots in a well-fought battle

PHOTOS BY ROSANA SWING In a game characterized by big plays, the Carpinteria High School football team ultimately outplayed Viewpoint on Friday, Sept. 7 for a 45-30 victory at Valley Memorial Stadium. Wide receiver/defensive back Brady Sturdivan led the way, scoring four touchdowns on the night, as the Warriors improved their record to 3-1 on the year. “It was a good win, a good win at home. We scored 45 points, I would have liked them (Viewpoint) to have less, but they have a good team,” said Carpinteria coach Rick Candaele.

The Warriors struck first when Jacob Macias burst through the line for a 30-yard run to make it 7-0 with a little over three minutes left in the first quarter. Early in the second, Carpinteria quarterback Vance Keiser found a wide open Sturdivan and connected on a 75-yard play to make it 14-0. But the visitors showed some firepower of their own with quarterback Niko Candido hooking up with Luke Boehm for a 31-yard touchdown for a 14-6 game.

With seven minutes left in the half, Keiser lofted another ball downfield and Sturdivan wrested it from a Patriot defender, then sprinted 73 yards for his second score to build the lead to 21-6. Viewpoint once again responded, as Candido teamed up with Peter Boehm for a 27-yard scoring strike to cut the lead to 2112. Following an interception on the ensuing drive, Candido once again found Peter Boehm for a 76-yard score to make it 21-18 with 3:02 left in the half.

Carpinteria countered again, as Keiser hooked up with Sturdivan for a seven-yard touchdown pass on a fade pattern to put the home team up 28-18. Keiser finished the night, completing eight of 11 passes for 259 yards, throwing three touchdowns and with two interceptions. Sturdivan led the Warriors in receptions with five catches for 177 yards and three touchdowns. The Warriors had a chance to increase the lead just before the half but when Chris Ramirez’s punt return for a touchdown was called back because of a blindside block, the score remained unchanged. Ramirez suffered a leg injury on the final play of the half that could place him on the sidelines for at least two weeks.

Carpinteria once again got off to a quick start in the second half, as Macias tallied another score on a 54-yard jaunt to put the Warriors up 35-18. He was the game’s leading rusher with 116 yards on eight carries with his two touchdowns. Meanwhile, the defense also came up big as Viewpoint’s next drive ended when Sturdivan picked off a Candido pass and returned it 29 yards for his fourth score of the game, giving the Warriors a 42-18 lead. “In the first half there was some confusion because what we were running in practice wasn’t really matching with what we were seeing (in the game) … at halftime we fixed it,” explained Sturdivan of the team’s improvement on defense in the second half.

But the Patriots didn’t quit as Candido once again teamed up with Peter Boehm to cut the lead to 42-24 in the third quarter. The Warriors got a boost in the second half from specialteams standout Alberto Arroyo, whose two punts averaged more than 40 yards, and kept the visitors hemmed in on two separate occasions. Arroyo finished the game with a 37-yard field goal, putting Carpinteria up 45-24. The Patriots added a touchdown late in the game to round out the scoring.

The Warriors host Fillmore at Valley Memorial Stadium on Friday, Sept. 14, at 7 p.m. as they clash for the first time as members of the new Citrus Coast League.

Sturdivan shared honors with San Marcos High School cross country runner Madison Funk as Athletes of the Week. In the Warriors 45-30 win over Viewpoint last week, Sturdivan scored four touchdowns—two of the scores on pass plays covering over 70 yards. He also nabbed a seven-yard touchdown, and ran back an interception 29 yards for his fourth score. With a 3-1 record, Carpinteria is ranked third in CIF-SS Division 12 and will host longtime foe Fillmore this weekend for the first time as members of the newly formed Citrus Coast League.

Sept. 8 – The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team participated in the First Serve Tournament in Huntington Beach hosted by Marina High School. The doubles team of Lexi Persoon/Jeannette Carrillo captured the Warriors only point in a 5-1 loss to El Dorado. But they took a set in another loss to Yorba Linda in the second matchup.

Amy Perez/Karla Marin and Vivi Torres/Leigh Pluma also took sets against Yorba Linda. Carpinteria, now 5-3 on the year, defeated host Marina 4-2. Marin and Angelina Torres both won in singles, and Persoon and Carrillo once again emerged victorious in doubles, while Perez and Josie Gordon also picked up a win in doubles play.

Sept. 11 - The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team was swept by Nordhoff, 3-0. “Nordhoff’s hitting power was too much for Carpinteria to handle,” said Warriors Coach Dino Garcia. The match scores were 25-11, 25-9 and 25-6. Carpinteria’s overall record falls to 1-2 with a Frontier League record of 1-1.

Cate School Girls volleyball Sept. 11 - The Cate School girls volleyball team regrouped after a 30-28 loss in the second set to beat Villanova in four sets. Freshman Elise GuerrandHermes led the team on the outside by collecting four kills and senior Katie Browne followed up with two kills of her own. Sophomore Kenzie Davidson collected five kills in the second set alone.

Guerrand-Hermes ended the match with 15 kills, Davidson followed with nine kills, and junior setter Maya Blattberg had six kills. “Freshman middle Chidera Chukwumerji added to the victory by leading in blocks with four, and crushing five kills” said Rams Coach Greg Novak.

Cate is 1-0 in the Tri-Valley League and will play at Bishop Diego on Thursday.

The rates are on file with the Clerk of the Owner’s governing board, and copies will be made available to any interested party upon request.

All Responders must be prequalified in accordance with Public Contract Code 20111.6. The prequalification requirement details are referenced in the RFQ/P. Prequalification packages are due no later than 5:00 PM on September 21, 2018.

Proposals not conforming to this requirement will not be accepted.

Statements in prescribed form are due no later than 11:00 AM on October 8, 2018. Foodies for a night

The downtown district buzzed with excitement on Friday evening, Sept. 7, as 300 people hit the pavement to hop from local eatery to local eatery for the Carpinteria Valley Chamber of Commerce’s second annual Culinary Crawl. Participants made their way from Casitas Pass to Linden Avenue as they filled their bellies with tasty tapas from eight local restaurants: Jack’s Bistro & Famous Bagels, Nutbelly Pizzeria, Phoevermore, Reynaldo’s Bakery, Rincon Brewery, Siam Elephant, The Food Liaison and Uncle Chen Restaurant. After devouring delicious small bites from favorite downtown eateries, the crawlers topped the evening off with an after party at the Carpinteria Arts Center, featuring more yummy samples from Chocolats du CaliBressan, Island Brewing Company, Rincon Coffee Roasting Company and Rincon Events & Zoo Catering.

Club SCene Channelkeeper updates Morning Rotary on local water projects

Channelkeeper works to protect and restore the Santa barbara Channel and its watersheds through science-based advocacy, education, fieldwork and enforcement. the organization is a branch of the Water Keeper Alliance international. Dayka and Troop 50 to help retire flags

eagle Scout candidate Kameron dayka with boy Scout troop 50, Carpinteria, received a donation from the Rotary Club of Carpinteria Sunset Foundation to support his community service project. Dayka is installing a flag retirement collection box at the fire station to accept worn-out U.S. flags. Donated flags are properly retired by Boy Scout Troop 50 in a flag retirement ceremony. In addition to the flag drop box, dayka plans to landscape the surrounding area and install an informational plaque.

Sunset Rotary donated $650 toward dayka’s project, which will cost approximately $1,700 to complete.

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY While collaborating on a life story project a few years ago, i told a client good progress had been made on her family tree. her excited response was a bit out of the ordinary.

“Are there any criminals?” i laughed and told her i hadn’t come across any yet, but i’d let her know. it is possible to gain a more colorful insight into our ancestor ’s lives other than simply recording their births, marriages and deaths. one way is to look through old newspapers, and Newspapers.com is a great jumping off point. these items from my own family tree have allowed us to have a better understanding of my ‘greats.’ my grandmother had told a story about her grandfather, a farmer who had a wooden leg, but she didn’t know how he came to lose the limb. A search in the 1911 Grand Forks herald revealed, “John t. bina of brocket had one of his feet injured in may, as the result of a runaway accident. the injury did not heal satisfactory (sic) and several weeks ago he was taken to a hospital at Grand Forks. Last week it was found necessary to amputate the foot and it is believed now that the unfortunate man will recover.”

John did recover to the point that he was able to continue farming, but aparently he had a vision for a new operation as reported in 1916, “it is rumored that John t. bina has purchased a lot in town and that he will build a sanitarium for the treatment of horses and all domestic animals suffering from tuberculosis or other diseases requiring plenty of fresh air, light and sanitary conditions. A veterinary surgeon will be in charge of the work. Let the good work go on.” the rumor about my second greatgrandmother maria Lucia Lombardi was that she had died in a streetcar accident. however, i found quite a bit more detail in a front page 1919 denver post clipping, “Stopping off a moving street car near West 35th Avenue, mrs. Lucille Lombardi, 55 years old, suffered a fractured skull which caused her death within a few minutes. the street car was traveling toward the downtown district when suddenly mrs. Lombardi started toward the door and stepped off the car... police Surgeon menser arrived in the police ambulance within a short time, but found the woman was already dead, her skull having been fractured when she fell over backward and her head struck the pavement.”

Another second-great grandfather George Gelser died at the young age of 51, leaving his wife to raise their 11 children. this interesting item appeared in the St. Louis dispatch in 1890, four years before his death. “George Gelser ... created a disturbance at the polls, knocked down the deputy marshal and drew a revolver, but was disarmed and himself knocked down. then he was arrested and taken to the police station. Later he was removed to the Custom-house and will have a hearing before the u.S. Commissioner.”

In defense of George, I did later find a piece that stated he “thought he had been deputized,” so went armed to the polls to help keep the peace. At the door he

A 1919 Denver Post clip details the death of Lisa’s second greatgrandmother. was not recognized as a deputy and was asked to surrender his gun, but obviously George felt justified to keep it. You win some, you lose some. in case you’re wondering, i did end up finding a criminal for my client. A few articles detailed an ancestor who had committed murder, but heartbreaking for my client was that the murdered fellow was the ancestor’s slave. the newspaper reported the ancestor’s arrest, pending trial and neighbors who raised bail, but not to be found was the result of any trial. Was justice done, or did a travesty of those times occur? that is something for further research in the court records books.

ON THE ROAD

Across the West with CVN

Clyde and Diana Freeman took a two-week road trip through several Western states. The first leg of the 3,762-mile trip was to West Yellowstone, where the Freemans visited Doug and Donna Treloar and explored Yellowstone National Park.

They caught up on news from home with the CVN while waiting for “Old Faithful” to perform. The trip included the Grand Tetons and Jackson Hole, Wyoming and a day in Butte, Montana where Diana’s grandparents were married and her mother was born. The Freemans rounded out the trip visiting Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and spent a couple of days in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the oldest chapel in the continental U.S. is located. There’s so much to see in the good-old USA.

The Johnsons, from left, are Grace, Emily, Chris and Mary. They visited their Norwegian family and climbed the Trollstigen, the “troll’s path”—a treacherous ride up a narrow winding road, but worth the effort. The Johnsons visited Hernes, Trysil, Røros, Trondheim, Geiranger and Ålesund, among other towns on their road trip throughout Norway, where they took in the many fjords, lakes and tiny islands while hiking, biking, ferrying and driving.
