Lynn Gibson retires

Lynn Gibson retired from her public service career on Nov. 14. A familiar face to generations of Carpinterians, Gibson worked for 20-plus years at the Carpinteria Middle School cafeteria, where her job title was team leader. Additionally, she held a second job at the Carpinteria Community Pool as managing cashier for the last 10 years. Coworkers held a small sendoff for Gibson in the Happy Hut on the pool deck last Wednesday. Her retirement plans include moving to Kern County and working at a deli.

Hospice announces Light Up A Life ceremonies

Hospice of Santa Barbara will continue its annual tradition of remembering loved ones lost during the holiday season. Light Up A Life ceremonies, which also raise funds for the nonprofit organization, will be held throughout the county. On Saturday, Dec. 9 at 5:30 p.m. there will be a ceremony at the Seal Fountain on Linden Avenue along with an opportunity to hang stars inscribed to friends and family on the Hospice memorial tree. Stars are available online and will also be available at each ceremony for a suggested donation of $15 or more for those wishing to personalize a star to hang on the tree. A 31-unit housing development on Cravens Lane that has been 10-plus years in the making was again approved by the City of Carpinteria Planning Commission on Nov. 6. While the plans for Green Heron Springs, a 4-acre development at 1300 Cravens Lane, remain largely unchanged since they were conceived and eventually approved starting in 2005, the Planning Commission reconsidered the site and plan through a 2017 lens, and the city performed an updated environmental review.

Commissioners approved the development plan and coastal development permit by a vote of 4-0 (Commissioner Jane Benefield absent). The original development was approved on the condition that it achieves LEAD Gold environmental certification; that agreement to build to strict environmental standards remains.

In praising the design before voting for approval, Commissioner John Moyer said, “Architecturally, residentially, I think it will put Carpinteria on the map.”

When originally proposed in 2005, the property was not in city limits. In order to gain approval, it had to be annexed by the city and the California Coastal Commission had to approve an amendment to the Local Coastal Plan. As part of that process, development permits for the property became contingent on acquiring LEAD Gold level certification among other measures to restore a small pond on the property to create a wetland habitat.

Green Heron Springs buildings will have solar panels among other advances to efficiency, and about half of the property will remain undeveloped as green space.

Since originally acquiring permitting in 2007, architectural design has been adapted to suit changing tastes, and the city’s Architectural Review Board had recommended approval of the latest design, described as coastal farmhouse.

Plans include 10 two-bedroom and 19 three-bedroom homes clustered in 14 buildings and a single stand-alone fourbedroom home. An existing five-bedroom home will remain on the property and get an upgrade plus an extension above the garage. There will also be an 800-squarefoot pavilion built for common use among residents.

At the hearing, several neighbors spoke out about traffic concerns being compounded by 30 new residences. In its environmental review, traffic engineers deemed new traffic impacts from the development insignificant. Commissioner David Allen joined neighbors in their concerns over traffic, particularly the regular congestion at Santa Monica

Road and Via Real, but the commissioner eventually said that he trusts the work of the experts and available data.

Citing the report and the 70 new parking spaces at the development, neighbor Jamie Throgmorton said, “It doesn’t pass my common sense test … to be a negligible impact.”

In criticizing the project, neighbor Bob Franco said, “This is a beautiful project, maybe too beautiful. It looks like you’ll have a millionaires’ club there.” He continued, “The more I look into this, it looks not like a Green Heron but more like a Green Turkey.”

Part of the development plan calls for four moderate income homes set aside for qualified applicants at a fixed price through a lottery system managed by the city. Commissioners and developers did not list an exact price for the four units, but it will be calculated based on median income levels in the area. “There are many people who hold down good jobs in Carpinteria and still can’t afford homes, so this serves a need,” Commissioner Glenn LaFevers said.

Before voting to approve the project, Commissioner John Callender acknowledged that a factor to consider in 2017 on the periphery of the city is the new impact of odor from cannabis cultivation. Green Heron Springs borders a greenhouse, but city staff did not specify if cannabis is cultivated there. Part of the original 2007 development agreement stated that routine agricultural practices will be continued at the neighboring property, but Callender questioned whether “routine” in the future will mean persistent cannabis odors or if ordinances currently being developed at the county level may come into play when establishing what residents of the new development must tolerate from ag neighbors.

Overwhelmed by the smell

For me, the issue of pot farms in Carpinteria is both personal and professional. I live on our family farm along Foothill Road and am overwhelmed by the smell of the pot growing operations on most days. I’m also greatly worried about the impact to students and staff at Carpinteria High School—also nearby on Foothill Road—who are daily inundated by the smell of marijuana. The ongoing smell problem is just the tip of the iceberg, however, and I see many potential issues evolving from the legal growing of pot in Carpinteria.

While the economic boon from this new ag industry may seem appealing, the county cannot let greed cloud the concerns of everyday Carpinterians who are already being adversely affected by the growth of pot farms. My biggest concerns are: smell control, water use and code enforcement. For a year, residents have complained and endured thick waves of skunk smell, but who has provided help to them? No one. Should residents have to endure headaches and higher water bills so that pot farmers can make more money? The simple answer is no.

We need commonsense regulations (and strict enforcement) that provide residents with protection.

The county should earmark a percentage of pot revenues for cities and other jurisdictions, like Carpinteria Unified School District, that are directly impacted by marijuana growing. The “green gold” money should benefit the people who are directly impacted by the negative aspects this lucrative crop.

Last, a significant chunk of the monies raised should be set aside for code enforcement and any regulations should include strict instructions on how to eliminate smell (and light) pollution and wasteful water use. While the increase in pot farms locally is inevitable, due to high demand for marijuana statewide, the destruction to our country-living lifestyle is not. But the County Supervisors must take bold action now to prevent further erosion of Carpinteria’s appealing seaside charm, beauty and (for now) fresh oceanside aroma.

A taste of cherry pie

Last weekend, my husband was lucky enough to go to the craft and bake sale at the Faith Lutheran Church. It was a very difficult decision to pick which baked goods he wanted, and after five minutes of drooling he decided on the cherry pie.

I have had many pies in my 64 years on this earth but none as delectable, mouthwatering, exquisite as this delicious pie.

If the baker can stand to part with the recipe, I would be eternally grateful.

If you would rather keep this treasure hidden I will look forward to next year’s bake sale.

Not the Carpinteria we know

As a property owner in Carpinteria, I am sickened that the county is considering allowing mass production of marijuana in our fair city so close to residential neighborhoods and schools.

Already in many areas our air has gone from pristine clean ocean air to a constant skunk-like smell that is giving children at school and nearby residents headaches, nausea and God knows what long-term negative health impacts. In addition, the extra volume of trucks, noise and lighting will transform our community into an industrial area for what is still a schedule

I find it reprehensible that our elected county supervisor Das Williams appears to be more interested in the potential tax revenues than the health, safety and welfare of his constituents from his remarks at the recent legislative breakfast on this topic. I implore the residents of Carpinteria to fight the wholesale production of marijuana as vigorously as possible.

Coming from the left

If Diana Thorn thought that the recent ad in CVN fanned the flames of hate and divisiveness, where has she been for the past year while the hater- and dividerin-chief has been ripping this country apart? And coming from the left, I take great offense at being called vengeful and unhinged. Those descriptions are the badges of the GOP. And who is it we are supposed to work with to help our nation? Paul Ryan? Mitch McConnell? She is correct about this being a very unstable world, but it’s the free spender of our money in the White House that gets credit for that.

And to Ray Seider, who wants the CVN to be guardians of what is acceptable speech, he’s been following Fox News too closely. They refuse advertising that doesn’t support their views and that’s the kind of thinking that big money thrives on. Mike Millan, in his excellent letter, sums up why we can’t keep silent and just watch as our liberties are eroded and our president spews lie after lie—undermining civility, honesty and the law while threatening our country’s, and the world’s safety and existence.

Democrats fall short

I have conservative views but have voted for Democrats in the past. I look for candidates who have sincere beliefs and convictions that don’t necessarily have to totally jive with mine, have the ability to compromise on vital issues, and who

make financial sense. There are very few modern politicians with these qualities: none among Democrats, very few in the Republican realm.

My problem with present-day Democrats is that their suggested programs offer nothing except welfare-type handouts with more government control.

Without a permanent needy class, Dems would have nothing to offer. They fail to encourage people to make efforts to help themselves. The likes of Pelosi, Schumer, Waters and other Dems simply toss around phrases like white privilege, racism, greedy rich, lacking compassion, etc. at proposals they deem threatening to the Obama-era-created status quo. They offer nothing except more welfare by taking from the rich and giving to the poor. They falsely present American wealth as a zero-sum game. By promoting this belief, they perpetuate the existence of a needy class of American people.

Would you prefer a political party that will encourage and provide opportunities for personal growth and success if you will put in some effort? Or would you prefer a political party that will offer you benefits provided by others without any effort on your part? What would you want your children to believe in relation to their futures? Personally, I would want my children to have compassion for others but believe that individual efforts for growth and benefits will be encouraged, not penalized.

Regardless of political party, I’ll consider voting for any politician who wants to create opportunities for the needy and underprivileged to advance and better themselves. We should work towards reducing welfare, not towards creating a class of people dependent on it.

President Trump is getting his pardon pen ready, as the Mueller investigation starts indicting his associates. This Wednesday, he plans to practice on two very innocent Minnesota turkeys. The other 244 million turkeys killed in the U.S. this year have not been so lucky. They were raised in crowded sheds filled with toxic fumes. Their beaks and toes were clipped to prevent stress-induced aggression. At 16 weeks of age, slaughterhouse workers cut their throats and dumped them in boiling water to remove their feathers. Consumers pay a heavy price too. Turkey flesh is laced with cholesterol and saturated fats that elevate risk of chronic killer diseases. Intense prolonged cooking is required to destroy deadly pathogens lurking inside.

Now for the good news: Per capita consumption of turkeys is down by a whopping 34 from a 1996 high of 303 million, as one third of our population is actively reducing meat consumption; supermarkets carry a rich variety of convenient, delicious, healthful plantbased meat products, including several oven-ready roasts. This Thanksgiving holiday, as we give thanks for life and good fortune, let’s also skip the gratuitous violence and grant our own pardon to an innocent animal.

Summerland mural pops Cvn

the summerland shore f r a n d av i s Drive by the big Summerland mural in the post office parking lot these days and it’s a standout, a technicolor work of art. For years the mural depicting scenes from Summerland’s storied past had been lapsing into faded decay. No one in the community had the will or the energy to undertake the massive fix required.

It took two big-hearted Carpinterians to come to the rescue. Many passes by the dilapidated mural got to be too much for retirees Stuart Brandt and Bruce Daniels, who proposed an ambitious restoration.

The year-long fix was undertaken with the blessings and help from the Summerland Citizens Association.

Residents donated paint and money for materials, and residents pitched in on several “community paint days.” Under Stuart’s expert guidance (he has an extensive background in decorative arts), the mural began to come back to life. Now the figures poised in front of Darling Brothers machine shop are recognizable, along with the filmy ghosts in the windows of the Summerland Spirtualist Temple and the hatted women in the buckboard.

Another work day was held on Nov. 11 to fill in more details, and a final clear coat was applied to protect the paint and color for, we hope, another couple decades. For months the two men labored alone on the

project, mostly choosing weekends when fewer cars blocked access to the mural wall. Now, finally, Stuart has declared their work is finished.

Once upon a time another writer friend and I worked for a while on a book about what retirees could choose to do with what we called “the ultimate third” of their lives. One possibility was using still-strong energy and talent to do good works, give something back, as the time-worn phrase goes. Stuart and Bruce did that. Hugely. For a year. They are inspirational. Heroes.

Narcissus in November

Yep, spotted the first one early this month. It used to be I watched for the lovely and smelly little lilies in January.

They were always a welcome early spring signal. I’d pick a few and bring them inside just to have that sweet aroma spread throughout the house. Then, last year, I noticed narcissus were poking up and blooming in December. Now November?

I guess we can blame the long, warm fall. Even the liquidambar one house up the hill didn’t manage a color show this year. We don’t see a lot of seasonal change here on the South Coast, but what little there is deserves to be remarked upon—sun and moon phases changing, a few trees shedding exhausted leaves, cotoneaster and toyon berries ripening, cooler nights.

Climate change can explain much of this—weird weather, extreme heat, microstorms like the one that touched down in Santa Barbara, tropical brown boobies found nesting on the Channel Islands. Even my shedding dogs. Their little hides haven’t seemed to register just what season we’re in either. Our Jack Russell terrier Gracie, who has what’s called a “broken coat,” which means coarse, is shedding stiff white hairs as if it was full summer. The wiry stuff embeds in rugs and cushions and drifts like airy snow into corners. Maybe I’ll just accept the white accumulation as an accent. Probably the closest to snow we’re likely to get in the foreseeable future. Unless, of course, the weather pulls another fast one on us.

One good thing: Heard in Summerland— the early morning cackle of a hen that’s just laid an egg, that friendly and hopeful farmyard sound.

The lease is up on the east end

Diane and Steve Atkinson ran their State Farm Insurance branch for about 30 years from an office adjacent to Casitas Plaza at 5432 Carpinteria Ave., and sublet office space to Calavo and Rincon Music, among other businesses, over the years. The Atkinsons had already retired and closed their business when their lease ended on Oct. 31. Normally, the remaining businesses would have re-negotiated new leases, but a representative of CBRE, a commercial real estate company handling what was the Atkinsons’ lease in the building, instead told Calavo and Rincon Music that they had 45 days to vacate their premises.

Citing liability for unpermitted work on the building in the 1980s, the company is unwilling to continue renting spaces to Calavo and Rincon Music.

Calavo plans to re-open a local office in a new location soon. As of press time, it

is unclear how other businesses in the building—Starbucks, Union Bank and the optometry office of Drs. Mayhew and Langsford—will be affected.

Michael Tsang of Rincon Music said that after three-and-a-half years his business was gaining momentum, landing contracts with a church in Summerland, Cate School and the Alcazar Theatre to install sound systems. “I feel slighted by it (the eviction),” Tsang commented. Despite the high cost of commercial leases in the area, Tsang is actively searching for a new location to continue his work in instrument sales, professional recording and sound gear and consulting. “It’s not easy to be a ‘brick and mortar’ in the Internet age,” Tsang noted, adding that his business is not over, “I just need to find a new home.”

WHERE THE HEART IS SARAH SMITH Maybe it’s the allure of always having a white Christmas, the charm of a small beach town or the exciting adventure of a lake-front cabin. According to statistics, more and more Americans are buying second homes. Below I outline a few things to consider before purchasing your second home: Consider all the costs. Just like your primary residence your second home will come with its fair share of continuous costs. If your second home is in a different city, make sure your local realtor or the seller’s agent thoroughly explains to you all the associated costs of the new home.

Different cities and states can have different utility companies and different waste companies. Make sure you understand the total cost of owning the home including property taxes, HOA and ongoing maintenance costs. Remember, these costs are continuous even if you are not there.

Having a well-planned budget will aid in the success of your investment.

Who will keep an eye out on your house when you are not there? A property manager may be a necessary expense. It is a good idea to hire a local property management professional to look after your house while you are away. A good property manager could end up saving you a bundle by making sure your sprinklers aren’t over watering all summer, your pipes aren’t freezing over in the winter or your roof leaking all through the rainy season. Property management fees will depend on their duties. Some charge a flat rate while others will charge a commission of rental income.

Should you rent out the second home?

Short-term or vacation rentals are a great way to make some extra money to offset costs while still being able to enjoy your home yourself. And with the aid of websites like VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner) and AIRBNB, many homeowners are cashing in on the possibilities. But buyers beware: many cities and even counties are putting restrictions on short-term (under 30 day) rentals. It is a must to check with local government before assuming you can rent out your home as a vacation rental.

If your home gets the A-OK for vacation rentals, then making sure you have the knowledge to proceed renting on your own or hiring a local property manager to assist you will make a world of difference. Believe it or not, vacation renting is a somewhat complicated business. Transient occupancy tax needs to be collected from visitors and paid to local government along with reporting, and each vacationer who stays in the home should be signing at least some sort of vacation agreement.

There is also advertising, responding to inquiries, checking in and out guests, cleaners to schedule, etc.

Make sure you can cover the costs.

Whether you will be renting out the house monthly to a full-time tenant or using it yourself and renting out only periodically make sure you can cover the costs. There will be times you are in between tenants or when you don’t book up a summer with vacationers like you did the year before.

A continuous flow from rental income cannot be they only way you can afford the home but should only be considered as an offset to the cost.

A second home, especially when in a gorgeous location, can be a very special place for family and friends to gather and make special memories. It can add to the spiritual wealth of your family and could

also be the home you retire in. A second home, if planned out correctly and managed properly, can be a great asset to your existing portfolio and your future.

According to the National Association of Realtors 19 percent of all home purchases in 2016 were vacation home purchases!

This fell a tad from 2015, but it is still at a high. Thirty-seven percent of those buyers intend to use their home for vacations or family retreats. Forty percent of vacation home buyers purchased in a beach area, 19 percent purchased in the mountains, and 19 percent purchased lake front.

Council bans retail Styrofoam sales

Leading the pack when it comes to environmental regulations has become a source of pride for Carpinteria. At a city council meeting on Nov. 13 the city held tightly to its front position by taking existing Styrofoam regulations a step further and banning the retail sale of single use products made out of the material. Cups, plates, coolers, packing peanuts, etc. made out of expanded polystyrene (EPS) will soon be in violation of city code.

“It affords more protection to Carpinteria’s beautiful creeks, beaches and our ocean,” said Penny Owens of Santa Barbara Channelkeeper. She was joined by representatives from a host of area nonprofits that have supported the city’s tightening of restrictions on EPS, a material that breaks down into tiny pieces that pollute the ocean and other waterways.

Mike Wondolowski of Carpinteria Valley Association said, “Our pollution disproportionately impacts the ocean.

Polystyrene in Fresno is less likely to end up in the Pacific than something from McDonald’s on Casitas Pass.”

In 2008, the city banned the use of EPS in to-go containers from Carpinteria restaurants. Environmental Coordinator Erin Maker told the council that since that decision, the amount of EPS trash collected at creek and beach cleanups has significantly dropped.

Maker also noted that in surveying local business owners, the proposal to ban retail sales of EPS elicited a mostly positive reaction. Grocery store managers said they would be able to switch to paper products without impacting their business.

Council members want to take the draft ordinance recommended by city staff even further. At the meeting, they asked for the ban to include the trays for meats sold in grocery stores, which are exempt in the draft ordinance. City lawyer Dylan Johnson recommended more research into the legality of such a ban, and staff suggested that in early 2018 the council could consider amending the code to ban meat trays and other suggested restrictions such as a ban on straws and a requirement that plastic cutlery be provided on demand.

City calls cannabis EIR inadequate

The City of Carpinteria is newly surrounded by marijuana growing operations that are all in the County of Santa Barbara. As such, it’s paying special attention to the county’s efforts to regulate the burgeoning industry. At its Nov. 13 meeting, the city council threw its support behind a 16-page staff-written letter that spells out several ways in which the county’s proposal to regulate marijuana cultivation falls short.

“We all know there are going to be different and potentially greater impacts here,” said city lawyer Dylan Johnson.

Of the documented cannabis growing, 31 percent of operations are in Carpinteria Valley, and many are just outside of city limits along Foothill Road. Nonetheless, the draft environmental impact report for the proposed Cannabis Land Use Ordinance and Licensing Program’s division of the county into five districts lumps Carpinteria in with Gaviota, Santa Barbara, Goleta and Montecito.

The central theme of the city’s letter to the county is that the EIR’s level of analysis is too broad. It fails, says the city, to adequately address the odor from commercial cannabis operations, which is the biggest issue that Carpinterians complain about—along with a slate of other issues such as lighting, fire risk and potential loss of open field agriculture. “Carpinteria is an urban area so close to a number of greenhouses. You don’t have that same issue, necessarily, in the North County,” said Steve Goggia, director of the city’s planning department.

The EIR found four areas of significant and unavoidable impacts: agricultural resources, air quality, noise and transportation. And with its high density of cannabis cultivation, Carpinteria stands to be impacted more severely in each area than other portions of the county.

Councilman Al Clark pointed out that at a scoping meeting held months ago in Carpinteria, the city urged the county to address specific elements that never made it into the report. “I think they just blew us off,” he said.

Council slams door on condo conversion

A notice of violation issued to Carpinteria Shores complex on Sandyland Road in 1994 is looking more and more like a permanent fixture. At its Nov. 13 meeting, the Carpinteria city council denied the first step toward legitimizing what amounts to an illegal conversion of apartments to condominiums that took place 40 years ago.

The notice of violation legally freezes the building in time. No building permits can be issued, and no units can be legally sold. However, it was noted at the meeting that sales have taken places outside the city’s knowledge.

Members of the homeowners’ association are eager to negotiate. Their lawyer told the council that the group is willing to make the modifications necessary or pay in-lieu fees for the areas that cannot be addressed. The building is short 48 required parking spaces and lacks suf-

ficient open space in addition to an array of other issues.

City Manager Dave Durflinger beseeched the council to begin the negotiation process with Carpinteria Shores.

Efforts to remove the notice of violation in the past have failed, and staff presented the condo conversion as a last hope for the building correct the violation. Durflinger noted that enforcing issues related to the notice of violation is an expensive thorn in the city’s side. Homeowner Elizabeth Fortner said that if they don’t start the process, “We’re going to be in notice of violation until the end of time.”

In the late 1970s, the building owner sold 99-year leases on the 36 units without bringing the building up to code for condominiums. When the city discovered this in 1994, it issued the notice of violation.

Councilman Brad Stein said he could not support the effort because it would set an improper precedent and no amount of modification could bring the building to the level required for condominiums.

“You’re not bending the rules,” he said, “you’re breaking them outright.”

Students at Laguna Blanca School will produce and host the school’s first ever TEDx event on Jan. 31. Based on the theme EVOLVE, the event will feature 10 to 15 speakers from all around the country, all of whom will be vetted through a rigorous application process and selected by class members. Expected to open by the first of the year, the park will feature new slides, swings, climbing walls, a mountain lion statue and a rubberized play area. A walking trail will ring the turf area, and there will be picnic tables and benches for seating.

Broadening horizons

Construction crews have begun the tall task of widening the Casitas Pass Road Overpass. Ultimately the bridge will have two lanes in each direction with a landscaped center median that could be converted into a fifth lane if traffic demands increase. There will also be a sidewalk and bike lane on each side and a traffic signal at each end of the bridge when the full Linden-Casitas project wraps up in 2019.

Goal driven: Warrior women prep for soccer success

Last season, the Carpinteria High School girls soccer team caught fire, beating out Fillmore for the Frontier League Title, finishing 12-1 in league play and 15-6 overall. It marked the first time the Warriors had won a title in girls soccer since 2008, and their second title overall.

Unfortunately, the fire was doused when the team traveled south to take on El Monte in the second round of CIF. They’d made it through a tough battle against St. Bonaventure, 1-0, to advance.

Against El Monte, the score was knotted 4-4 through regulation play and overtime, so the outcome would be decided by penalty kicks. The Warriors were outbooted on that day and eliminated by a final of 5-4, a painful way to the end of an outstanding season.

Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant’s remedy to ease the pain? “Well, we scheduled them (El Monte) again,” explained Bryant. On Dec. 16, not only will the Warriors try to avenge last season’s loss to the Lions, they will also take on defending CIF-SS Division VII Champion San Gabriel Mission that same morning in the first match of a doubleheader. “We try and schedule tough, just to prep (the team) for league,” said Bryant. Among some of the other non-league opponents on Carpinteria’s schedule are Oxnard, St. Bonaventure and La Reina, the team’s season opener in Thousand Oaks on Nov. 27.

The Warriors return a strong corps of players from last year’s squad, including Frontier League Co-Most Valuable Players goalie Laura Valdez and defender, team captain Alejandra Garcia back for their senior seasons. Also returning is another senior, co-captain and First Team Frontier League forward Alejandra Alva-

rez. However, four graduating seniors— Elizabeth Estrada, Ava Gropper, Yaneli Gutierrez and Xochitl Moreno—will be missed.

“We scored 70 goals (last season). Thirty-five are graduated or (from) Dayne who is not coming back,” explained Bryant. His reference is to last year’s freshman sensation Dayne Wagner, who opted to sign to play club academy soccer instead. This year’s team still has a huge upside with the backline of seniors Yovanna Ahedo and Aly Springer; and junior defender Emmelley Santillan, each a part of last year’s All-Frontier League Team coming back. All-League sophomore midfielder Erika Estrada also figures to make an impact again.

According to Bryant, Fillmore will be the favorite to win league with virtually everyone back from last year’s secondplace team. He also likes Nordhoff and Thacher to challenge for the crown. “It’s a balanced league which is nice. It’s not like the leagues in the past where you had Oaks Christian and Oak Park and you’re just going, oh gosh,” said Bryant.

He has the Warriors on a par with league foes, Cate and Bishop Diego with Santa Clara and Villanova at the back end.

“It’s a neat team, one you wouldn’t want to face in a playoff. Whether we come through or not, I don’t know,” concluded Bryant, hoping that this year’s squad can find the spark that led to a league championship a year ago.

Carpinteria High School junior Isaac De Alba was announced as this year’s Warriors recipient of the Phil Womble Award at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s press luncheon earlier this week at Harry’s Plaza Café in Santa Barbara. De Alba, who plays football, basketball and participates in track for the school, was accompanied by first-year football coach Rick Candaele, basketball coach Henry Gonzales and track and field coach Van Latham. “He’s a great leader and a great worker,” said Candaele. In the 1990s, Candaele coached Isaac’s father Richard, who also wore number 44 on the football field.

As the shadows crept across the Rams home football field on Cate Mesa last Saturday afternoon, reality began to set in that the season was coming to an end.

Mojave broke open a tightly contested game in the second half of their CIFSS Division I playoff victory and came away with 38-19 win. For the second time this season, Cate found itself on the wrong end of the scoreboard against the defending CIF Eight-Man champs who had clinched a 43-12 win in the season opener on Sept. 1.

The two went helmet-to-helmet in the first half with the Rams driving deep into Mustang territory for a first-and-goal in the game’s opening possession. But two illegal procedure penalties backed up the home team, and when Cate quarterback Jack Deardorff’s pass to brother William Deardorff fell incomplete, Mojave took over on downs with 8:42 left in opening stanza. Mojave would then capitalize on their first drive with quarterback Timothy Whitfield connecting with Rae’Kwon Alvez for a touchdown pass to put the visitors up, 6-0.

The first quarter ended with the Mustangs holding onto their one-touchdown lead. But on the very first play of the second, Rams running back Drew Anastasio, on a fake reverse, rumbled 13 yards to put his team up 7-6 with kicker Sebastian Richardson tacking on the extra point. Mojave then answered back on Tyree Hendrix’s 45-yard touchdown run, making it a 12-7 contest.

Following a touchback on the kickoff, Cate retook the lead on the very next play. Cal Sinclair coming out of the back-

field on a wheel route, hauled in a Jack Deardorff pass, and took it 65 yards for a touchdown to make it 13-12. However, with 36 seconds left in the first half, Whitfield found Alvez again in the end zone for an 18-13 lead at the half. “There’s a reason why they’re the defending CIF champs; they have good athletes,” said Rams coach Ben Soto.

The beginning of the third quarter saw Cate bottled-up in their own zone.

“They stuck with our guys real tight; we were not able to get some guys open,” said Soto. Following a punt that put the Mustangs on the Rams 33, Whitfield took advantage of the short field, hitting Alvez again, this time for a 13-yard scoring pass to extend the lead to 24-13. Cate then drove down to the Mojave 26, but a fumble turned the ball over and the Mustangs held an 11-point edge heading into the fourth.

The Rams came knocking at the door again, making their way to the Mojave 7 for a first-and-goal. But a fourth down completion ended up short of the goal line, and the Mustangs took over at their own 3. Whitfield then broke free down the sidelines for a 77-yard touchdown run for a 31-13 lead with 7:30 to play.

However, Cate would respond with its own drive with Jack Deardorff running it in from 12 yards out to narrow the margin to 31-19.

BY ALONZO OROZCO The Carpinteria High School football team traveled up to North County to take on Santa Maria in the first round of the CIF-SS Division XII playoffs. Although the Warriors scored a touchdown in each quarter, the Saints doubled that for a 5628 victory to advance to the second round.

Santa Maria quarterback Blake Truhitte led the way, having his hand in seven touchdowns: rushing for three scores, throwing for another three and scoring on a kickoff return.

Santa Maria got on the board first for a 7-0 lead, but the visitors responded by quarterback Vance Keiser connecting with Terrell Richardson for a touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. But the Saints closed out the quarter with Truhitte returning

the kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, and a 14-7 lead. Truhitte then found John Rojas for a touchdown pass to put his team up 21-7 in the second.

However, Carpinteria responded with Keiser hitting Leo Vargas for a 60-yard scoring play to bring his team back within seven at 21-14. Santa Maria then closed out the half with two more scoring strikes from Truhitte, hooking up again with Rojas for one, and then tossing another to Gerardo Zul to put the Saints up 35-14.

The Warriors would have their work cut out for them heading into the second half.

Santa Maria added to its lead in the third on a Luis Vasquez touchdown run to put the Saints up 42-14. “Santa Maria’s offense, especially that quarterback, was a little too explosive for us,” said Carpinteria coach Rick Candaele. But the

Warriors refused to go away, and Keiser connected with Brady Sturdivan on another touchdown pass play to cut the lead in half at 42-21.

Truhitte’s night was not quite over yet though. He ran for two more scores, one in the third and the other in the final quarter, to build the lead to 56-21. Carpinteria scored once more with Keiser teaming-up with Sturdivan for a touchdown pass inside the red zone to round out the scoring. Vargas led the Warriors in rushing with 84 yards on 13 carries, while Keiser completed 14 of 26 pass attempts for 246 yards.

“I was proud of our kids and how we battled, but it was a little bit of an uphill battle for us,” said Candaele, pointing out Santa Maria’s student enrollment of over 2,500 students in comparison to Carpinteria’s student population of approximately 600.

And Candaele was pleased with this group’s progress. “We came within a whisker of winning a league championship,” explained the first-year coach, summing up his team’s accomplishments. The Warriors finish their season at 6-5, their first time over the .500 mark since 2013.

On Nov. 4 at approximately 9:30 p.m. a woman parked her SUV in the lot at Wullbrandt Way and Cactus Lane and went to a bar/restaurant nearby. Afterwards, she walked home. The following morning at about 8 a.m. she returned to the parking lot and could not find her vehicle there.

At approximately 10 a.m. a deputy took a statement from the woman. She said she’d left her cell phone in the car and was working with her service provider to determine where the phone, and perhaps the car, were. The deputy entered her vehicle into the stolen vehicle system.

Later in the day, at approximately 2:20 p.m., the deputy was dispatched to the area again to meet with the woman, who said her SUV had been returned to the lot where she had left it the previous night.

She said she was sure she had not left the vehicle at the location where she found it, and added that someone had stolen one of her car keys about a year ago, and according to the deputy’s report “believes the person that has her key knows her and believes they may have moved the vehicle.” The 35-year-old woman reported that nothing had been taken from the SUV and the deputy removed the vehicle from the stolen registry.

Buzzed driving is drunk driving

On Nov. 7 at approximately 11 p.m. a deputy observed an SUV traveling at high rate of speed southbound on Casitas

Pass Road towards Carpinteria Avenue.

The light was red, but the vehicle entered the crosswalk and made a right turn onto Carpinteria Avenue without coming to a complete stop. Accelerating fast enough for the tires to make a loud screech, the vehicle continued westbound on Carpinteria Avenue. The deputy pulled over the SUV just east of Linden Avenue and approached the driver’s front window.

He immediately smelled alcohol on the driver’s breath.

The 35-year-old man had bloodshot eyes according to the deputy’s report, and said he was driving from Oxnard to the Chumash Casino with his mother who was in the front passenger seat. He also said that he had had one 12-ounce Dos Equis beer with dinner, but he did not feel any effects of drinking. The deputy believed the man was intoxicated and arrested him. The man’s cousin came to take possession of the car and drove the man’s mother home. A breath sample given at 11:30 p.m. showed a BAC of .13 percent, a second sample two minutes later showed a BAC of .1 percent and a third sample given at 11:36 p.m. showed a BAC of .12 percent. The legal limit is .08 percent. The man was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Law enforcement warns of kidnapping scam

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office announced that several reports of “virtual kidnapping” extortion calls have been received recently. Readers who receive a phone call from someone demanding a ransom for an alleged kidnap victim should recognize the likelihood of a scam. The schemes typically involve an individual or criminal organization who contacts a victim via telephone and demands payment for the return of a “kidnapped” family member or friend.

While no actual kidnapping has taken place, the callers often use co-conspirators to convince their victims of the legitimacy of the threat. For example, a caller might attempt to convince a victim that his or her daughter was kidnapped by having a young female scream for help in the background during the call. Instructions usually involve demands of a ransom payment by wire transfer. The Sheriff’s office advises anyone who suspects a scam to hang up the phone, immediately contact family members and notify law enforcement.

The Ota family history is closely intertwined with that of the Bates family, which Throwback Thursday has spotlighted for the last several weeks.

Like the Ramirezes, who were featured recently, the Otas got their start in local farming on the 1,200-acre ranch owned by R.W. Bates.

In 1922 Kijuro Ota was hired to farm the expansive Bates Ranch that stretched up Rincon Canyon from the east side of Rincon Point. He and his wife, Hide, first lived in a small house on the point where their eight children grew up with the high tide at their doorstep.

In a book of family history compiled by the Ota family, these early days on Rincon Point are fondly recounted: “Sumi (one of the older Ota daughters) recalls the Ota kids having a wonderful time on Rincon beach. Kijuro caught Ken and Kijuro Ota are pictured harvesting fish and hunted for rabbit and lemons in the 1940s. quail. The girls played for hours on the beach. Ken, Tom and Bobby Bates built a raft with a cabin to float around the slough. One weekend, the Bates family came to their cottage on the beach and the Bates children spent much of their time with the Ota children.”

Kijuro had immigrated to the U.S. in 1907 as a young man. He arrived in San Francisco then moved to Fillmore for a few years. Next he farmed in the Sierra Madre where Hide joined him. They were married in 1912 and as their family grew, they moved several times over the next few years for better farming opportunities and healthier locales.

When the Otas came to Carpinteria, Kijuro initially grew cantaloupes and vegetables on the Bates Ranch. His oldest kids, Tom and Ken, later started working with their father, eventually growing peas, beans and tomatoes on land rented in Goleta and in Carpinteria.

Around 1930, the Otas moved to a different home on the Bates Ranch. Located just off Bates Road, the small structure had served as a gas station. The Otas moved in and added on. Over time, the hard-working family saved enough to purchase land in Piru and in Carpinteria near the intersection of Highway 150 and Bates Road.

After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and shelled the Ellwood oil field in February 1942, nearly 120,000 ethnic Japanese were sent to internment camps. Seventy percent of those held prisoner for the next three years were born in the United States.

Tom Ota said in a 1989 interview for the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History that he didn’t suffer from ethnic discrimination as a child. “There was no prejudice at the time (in Carpinteria) because there were very few people.” But despite the trust of locals, the Otas were forced to leave their home, their land, their pets and their belongings and move to a relocation camp in Gila, Ariz.

When the war ended, the Otas returned to Carpinteria on March 31, 1945. Many of the interned Japanese lost everything, but thanks in part to several loyal friends, the Otas were able to return to a life that resembled the one they’d left behind. Lawyer Coleman Stewart had helped Tom set up the business so that the government couldn’t freeze the family assets. Waldo Ramirez cared for the Ota property, where the family warehoused everything they owned that couldn’t be carried. The family history also states that, “R.W. Bates helped pave the way for the Otas’ return and welcomed them back. Because they had something to return to, they were one of the first Japanese families to return to the area.”

During and just after the war, some of the Ota kids—then young adults—married and moved away, but several made their way back to Carpinteria. Farming resumed on the local ranch, which is still in the family today. In recent years, remaining members of the Bates and Ota families have reunited to reminisce about their carefree childhood days along the shore.

ON THE ROAD In the footsteps of ancestors with CVN

Doug Grant stands at Edinburgh Castle atop Castle Rock with his Coastal View News.

Grant is a third-generation and lifetime resident of Carpinteria.

Recently, he traveled to London where his daughter Channing was studying at the London School of Economics. Together they traveled to Scotland, home of their ancestors. After three days in Edinburgh, they traveled through Grantown to a distillery called Glen Grant where they tasted fine single malt whiskey. After that it was on to the Grant Tower, located in the Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness. Doug and Channing also watched the Scottish Highlands Games in, you guessed it, the Scottish Highlands!

Softballing across The People’s Republic of China

Michael Quigley traveled to China with Senior Softball to play in the Pacific Rim Softball Championships and do clinics at numerous local schools.

Quigley visited Tiananmen Square as well as the Forbidden City in Beijing. He also took time to visit the Great Wall with his copy of the Coastal View News.
