Cannabis growing in your neighbor’s garden, not happening any time soon

Newcomer Roy Lee joins City Council After 28 years on City Council, Carpinteria’s longest-standing continuous councilmember, Brad Stein, will step down at the end of this year, after losing his bid for reelection on Nov. 6.

Incumbents Gregg Carty and Al Clark both retained their seats. Carty, who received 23.33 percent of votes, and Clark, with 23.68 percent of votes, have both been on the council for the past 12 years.

Newcomer and local restaurant owner Roy Lee will join City Council after taking the third contested seat. Lee received 23.17 percent of votes.

Stein received 17.82 percent of votes and Darwin Ringling received 13.22 percent of votes.

Carpinterians approve Measure X

According to the unofficial results of the Santa Barbara County General Election, Measure X has passed with a “yes” vote at 54.99 percent, securing an increased sales tax for the City of 1.25 percent, bringing the sales tax to a flat 9 percent. Most groceries, prescription medicines and food stamp purchases are not taxed. About half the sales-tax increase will be paid for by visitors.

Measure X is projected to generate $2.3 million per year to help pay for essential services like street and sidewalk repairs, park maintenance, law enforcement, disaster preparedness, clean water mandates and public programs such as the Carpinteria Library.

The sales tax increase will go into effect in April of 2019.

On Nov. 5, the Planning Commission voted 3-1 (with Commissioner John Moyer dissenting) to recommend approval of Ordinance No. 726 establishing comprehensive, citywide personal use and commercial cannabis regulations, with the following revision: Prohibit outdoor cultivation for personal use throughout the city.

Moyer voted against the recommendation for approval based on his express concern that prohibiting outdoor cultivation for personal use would benefit the black market.

The Commissioners, including Moyer, were in support of the recommended commercial cannabis regulations and zoning presented by Planner Nick Bobroff and City staff. The staff proposal would bring the City in compliance with the Medicinal and Adult-Use Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act (MAUCRSA), as required by California state law.

MAUCRSA requires the City to allow individuals to cultivate up to six cannabis plants in residential districts, but the local government can restrict outdoor growing.

During the public comment, several community members voiced their opposition to outdoor growing in residential areas, as well as other issues, including the concentration of manufacturing and testing facilities on the east end of Carpinteria.

zoning. “Residents at Lagunitas are very concerned,” said Verna Gindalf in a later comment. “We’re already experiencing a lot of noise… We’re very concerned about security, smells and noise.”

“I moved here eight years ago to live a peaceful life growing avocados. But the odors are now disturbing our peace,” she said. “When are you going to put the needs of our little Eden here ahead of the growers?” Wendy McGregor voiced similar concern, “We know that the growers are wealthy but if you put us all together, the little people, we pay a lot in taxes.”

Anna Carillo called for Carpinteria to adopt the same 750 ft buffer to sensitive agents (such as schools) that Santa Barbara has implemented, which provides greater protection than the 600 ft distance that the state requires. Carillo also called for a wider definition of sensitive areas, including not only schools but convalescent care facilities, urgent care units and parks and recreation areas. “Then more residents would be protected,” said Carilllo.

Commissioner David Allen responded to the public stating that what the community perceives as the odor issue is primarily a County issue and the County needs to deal with and enforce odor control, it is outside the jurisdiction of the City. Commissioner Jane L. Benefield expressed sympathy but a similar response, “We do not grow commercial cannabis in Carpinteria,” stated Benefield. “I get the issue, and I’m sorry. I don’t like the smell either.”

Allen later followed his remarks by adding, “Outdoor growing in this community should not be allowed. We have a significant, real nuisance with the odor. I’ve been bowled over by the odor at times, walking by the high school.

Goleta, Ojai and Ventura are not nearly as affected by the odor as us, and they have so far chosen not to allow outdoor growing.”

Benefield concurred, “I think we should just say ‘no’ to outside growing because we do not need the extra burden, figuring out if I’m in the buffer zone, neighbors calling on neighbors… Enforcement will be an issue… There should be huge fines. Make them enormous. Six

Woman’s Club collects non-perishables

The Carpinteria Woman’s Club will collect non-perishable food items for local families in need through the Adopt-a-Family holiday program. All members of the community are encouraged to bring canned or dry foods to the CWC, 1059 Vallecito Road, on Wednesday, Nov. 14, between 6:30 and 7 p.m.

Diplomas to be awarded to veterans

The Santa Barbara County Education Office announced its participation in “Operation Recognition,” a project that awards high school diplomas to qualifying U.S. veterans of World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War, as well as to those who were interned in World War II relocation camps.

“We are excited to present Santa Barbara County’s Operation Recognition,” said County Superintendent of Schools Dr. Susan Salcido. “We are grateful for the opportunity to show these men and women how much we value their sacrifice and service.”

The 2019 recognition ceremony will be held Thursday, March 7, at the Santa Barbara County Education Office on Cathedral Oaks Road in Santa Barbara. In order to be recognized at the ceremony, completed application forms and supporting documentation must be received by Jan. 9, 2019.

Individuals interested in applying for a diploma through Operation Recognition may download the application by visiting SBCEO.org, or by contacting (805) 964-4710, ext. 5282. Family members of qualifying individuals may also apply for a diploma to be awarded posthumously.

Skate park catches air Conceptual plans head to City’s Architectural Review Board

The long-anticipated local skate park recently took another step toward reality, according to a report in the City of Carpinteria’s new e-newsletter The Current. Newly completed conceptual plans offer a first glimpse into the proposed 14,000-square-foot skateboarding facility neighboring City Hall. The design, developed by Mears Design Group and Dreamland Skateparks, features three main skating areas: a faux streetscape, a hook-shaped 6-foot deep bowl and a skatable amphitheater.

The skate park project, a joint effort between the City and the Carpinteria Skate Foundation, now advances toward permitting, which will include public meetings by the City’s Architectural Review Board and Planning Commission.

Conceptual plans have not yet been submitted to the Community Development Department, according to Nick Bobroff, Senior Planner.

Skate Foundation Board member Jason Campbell said that his board is pleased with the plans and the opportunity to work with Dreamland Skateparks, the design firm behind some of the best skate parks in the world. He said that the skatable amphitheater is intended to double as a special events venue, which could provide a stream of income to help sustain the park. Additionally, Campbell is excited about the “Anacapa Ramp” that is shaped like the island’s famed arch rock.

Other noteworthy elements of the project include a rest area with shade and picnic tables that could accommodate food trucks for special events. A restroom and lighting for evening skating events are also included.

Through an MOU with the City, the Skate Foundation has agreed to raise the funds necessary to construct the park. Its total price remains undetermined, but fundraising has already begun and Skate Foundation board members are confident that securing building permits will motivate additional donors. The City and Foundation will also work together in an effort to secure federal and state grants.

A few years back, the City considered numerous sites throughout Carpinteria for a skate park, ultimately concluding that the optimal location was the eastern side of City Hall, where the defunct Thunderbowl roller hockey rink now stands.

The site’s distance from residences and the city’s ownership of the property are among its many positive attributes.

Every veteran has a story

Local Marine recounts Vietnam combat experience

None of Rudy Gomez’ family members had served in the military, but after graduating high school in February of 1966, Gomez enlisted, entering the Marine Corps in July, 1966.

“I saw too many John Wayne movies,” said Gomez. “I always wanted to be in the military. I chose the Marines because it’s a small unit. I wanted to be with the best, in the field and in the action.”

Gomez was born on Dec. 4, 1946 in Los Angeles, California. His father worked in manufacturing. He had lost his right arm and worked as a spray painter. Gomez’ mother worked in a warehouse laundry facility. His parents took the news differently. He recalls that his dad was OK with it, but his mom took it a little hard.

Gomez did well at boot camp, enjoying the discipline and the exercise. “I tell younger kids who are going in, just do what you’re told, when you’re told and you’ll be fine.”

After boot camp Gomez headed to supply school in Le Jeune, North Carolina, and was then stationed in regimented supply.

“I had a very easy, easy job,” Gomez said. “I hated it. An 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. job—a desk job. The war was heating up. So, I volunteered to go to Vietnam and they didn’t take me. I volunteered a second time, and again I was denied. I volunteered a third time to go as a grunt, and I was on my way two weeks later.”

Gomez went to Vietnam in August or September of 1967, assigned to India Company, 3rd Battalion. There were 26 marines in his company under the leadership of Captain Dabney, who was the sonin-law of military legend Chesty Puller.

His unit went north near the demilitarized zone, known as the DMZ, to one of the hills surrounding the Khe Sahn air strip, Hill 881 South. They hiked to the top and arrived a few days after Christmas, 1967.

On Jan. 20, 1968, the entire India Company went on a full-size patrol towards Hill 881 North. “We had heard that the enemy had ambushed a recon team two days prior and had killed all of them, so we went to search,” said Gomez. At about 8:30 a.m., heading northbound, the company spotted a North Vietnamese Army (NVA) battalion that was hiding in preparation to attack Hill 881 South.

“So we surprised them,” Gomez said.

shot again… (it hit) about a foot away.

I backed up, he shot another round— missed again,” said Gomez. “I remember two grenades flying overhead as I’m yelling out, “Chicom (grenade), chicom,” at my marines behind me to let them know what is coming over. The marines are falling down beside me, right and left, and my lieutenant came up to me. We were all on the line but he came up to me and told me that there was a sniper over there at about 10 o’clock, probably about 70 yards away, roughly. At that time, I had an M14 rifle. I looked to my left, at 10 o’clock there was a bush. The lieutenant told me he (the sniper) was behind the bush. I don’t know why he came up to me? I saw the bush, and I took the shot.

“I never saw my lieutenant again.

There was so much chaos going on within our platoon that I didn’t realize it, but our platoon was getting pretty beat up. Word went out to Captain Dabney and a second platoon came over to assist. I was about, maybe, 10 yards from the crest, the knoll peak, and that’s where the grenades were coming from.

“A lieutenant came over to me and I told him, keep your head down. He left me to advance. Straight up ahead of me, about five feet away, he picked up his head to take a peak, and they killed him.

“It pissed me off because I told him to keep his head down, they were right there. But there was a lot of chaos going on at that moment. We heard through the radio a message came in and told us to get our guys back into a circle… I tried to crawl in a straight line so I could bring back three other marines. I saw this foxhole and I saw a chicom in the bottom.

I crawled over the foxhole and I said, ‘please don’t go off, please don’t go off.’

I remember the dirt falling. It didn’t go off. I reached the marines, and we pulled back roughly 15 yards. Four phantoms came in and dropped napalm. All the air got sucked out, and for a few seconds we gasped for air. They got them (the NVA) pretty bad.”

The following day, Jan. 21, at 5:30 a.m. a mortar landed and exploded about 25 feet in front of Gomez. A piece of shrapnel took a piece of skin off of the forehead of the marine to his left. Gomez was burned on the side of his face by the blast and the heat. “I was fortunate,” said Gomez.

A helicopter landed later that morning and took the wounded to a medevac helicopter to take them out of the area completely.

Less than a month later, while recovering in the military hospital, Gomez came across a Newsweek article (Issue date Feb. 5, 1968) reporting that the pueblo had been captured. Newsweek printed Gomez’ photo, a picture of his head wrapped in bandages, while he smoked a cigarette.

“It’s hard to talk about (my experience in the Vietnam War) but I’ll try and put it into words. Seeing a dead body put on a wood stick like a pig and watching it get carried away, a mother selling her daughter for sex right there on the side of the road about 20 feet from me. Sometimes the inhumane things that happened during war and battle… some guys would get souvenirs—body parts—bodies being blown in half. I just hate war. It’s terrible to witness it and to be a part of it. And the things you will do and the things you will not do.

“We had our moments of celebration though. When we’d collect our mail after 21 days out in the bush without getting a hot shower… We’d all be dreaming of something. I was dreaming of a banana split.”

Mobile homes, affordable no more

The once affordable housing option— the mobile home—is slipping away, one by one.

For many of us, mobile/manufactured homes have offered an affordable solution to home ownership. This is in part due to the city’s rent stabilization ordinance.

However, we are losing this option when these homes are sold. There are several factors causing this. For one, park owners and managers have found ways to circumvent the ordinance and charge high space rents. Another is The Mobilehome Residency Law (MRL) which contains language that allows park owners, under given circumstances, to charge these excessive rents. Few individuals have the resources to challenge these practices in order to secure a reasonable rent.

This is happening in two of Carpinteria’s largest parks. When a mobile home is sold, the new buyer is given a longterm lease to sign which exempts that space from rent control. When the lease expires, the space does regain its rent control status but there’s a catch—the new base rent begins where the high rent lease left off (MRL 798.17.a). Wouldn’t it make much more sense if it reverted back to the city’s specified rent for that space at that time? So, as it goes, our affordable homes are slipping away and will eventually become non-existent in these parks.

Lack of affordable housing and rising rents should concern us all if we want to preserve the wonderful diversity and the quality of life we enjoy in our small city. People that work to provide essential goods and services may need to move elsewhere to find affordability.

Our state legislators, local politicians, realtors and mobile home owners need to work together to make changes that will put the brakes on these escalating space rents and save mobile home ownership as a means of affordable housing.

HERE is the place

As I write this, midterm election results are unknown. However they turn out I suggest that, regardless of political affiliation, we absolutely insist that our representatives start behaving like mature adults and put the nation’s overall welfare ahead of the present blind adherence to political party loyalty.

Carpinterians have probably observed the liberal-leaning, sign-carrying group that has occupied a corner at Linden and Carpinteria Avenues on Friday af-

ternoons. As a conservative, I’ve made a point to walk among them and talk with sign-holders. They are nice people. We’ve discussed our political differences in civil fashion. I’ve been tempted to stand on a stepladder behind them with a sign reading “I don’t agree with these views, but I respect the rights of those here to peacefully display them.”

My nutshell summary: HERE isn’t perfect and never will be. Those suffering in other countries struggle to come HERE. Celebrities who have threatened to leave HERE when things haven’t gone their way are still HERE. It is HERE where we have freedom of speech and, with individual effort and initiative, are provided numerous opportunities to better ourselves. HERE is where we have the opportunity to choose our leaders. HERE is where the concept of federalism allows states to establish differing laws for residents. HERE is where you can freely leave if you desire to do so. It is HERE where we, a young country, have a wonderful, although far-from-perfect history. It is HERE where we should cease attempting to erase portions of our history. It is HERE where we can freely learn from past mistakes. HERE is where we can, and should, insist that our elected representatives behave decently and responsibly to set good examples for our children.

Finally, it is HERE where you have the right to disagree with me.

How many people reading this could explain a watershed? A watershed isn’t just a place, it’s a process—and each and every one of us live within a watershed no matter how dry or wet the climate we are in. We don’t often think about how the ground beneath us functions, and how any changes to the landscape can have long-term effects.

Natural landscape features form watersheds, which can vary greatly in size.

Watershed processes are the chemical and physical interactions that happen within that watershed, and are the balance of key components: filtration, storage, erosion control, flood attenuation and habitat. Each of those components can be further broken down, but this is a broad overview.

Proposed changes to the Carpinteria Municipal Code include: 1) revoking Chapter 8.14 Cultivation of Nonmedical Marijuana; 2) amending Chapter 14.59 Medical Marijuana Dispensary Regulations, to consolidate and regulate all personal use and commercial cannabis activities; 3) the amendment of Chapter 14.08 Definitions, adding/updating terms related to personal use and commercial cannabis activities; and 4) the amendment of Chapter 14.12 R-1 Single Family Residential District, Chapter 14.14 PRD Planned Residential Development District, Chapter 14.16 PUD Planned Unit Development District, Chapter 14.18 MHP Mobile Home Park Planned Development District, Chapter 14.20 CPD Commercial Planned Development District, Chapter 14.26 M-RP Industrial/Research Park District, Chapter 14.28 M General Industry District, and Chapter 14.32 A Agriculture District, adding new use types.

The Ordinance was considered by the City of Carpinteria Planning Commission on November 5, 2018 wherein the Commission voted to recommend approval of Ordinance No. 726 amended to prohibit outdoor personal use cultivation throughout the City.

of hundreds of years. Precipitation, in the form of rain, snow and even heavy fog, falls from the sky and does several things.

Some is soaked up by plants, some gets stored in the ground, and some will create runoff, or overland flow, which generally runs into rivers or streams as it flows downhill. Some of that rain evaporates into the atmosphere to become rain again.

And depending on the intensity of the rain and the features of the landscape, it can cause erosion, transportation of pollutants and nutrients, and in extreme cases landslides or debris flows.

As water flows across a landscape, plants help protect and enhance water quality by filtering out pollutants, preventing soil erosion and storing potential floodwaters. All of this is done while also providing wildlife habitat. Drop by drop, water channels towards local waterways.

As the ground becomes more saturated during precipitation events, more water runs off into the local waterways.

There is always some erosion happening. Water plays a major role in the shaping of our world, including turning mountains into silt and sand. Sometimes that takes eons and sometimes it happens overnight, but eventually mountains erode through exposure to the elements.

I grew up in the northeast, where the mountains are old—a few hundred million years older than the Santa Ynez mountain range. Those mountains look much smaller and rounded than the ones I see out my window now, but once they were giants. As they eroded, large rock turned into smaller rocks, eventually breaking down to gravel, sand, and silt.

This material is carried by rivers and streams as they flow towards lakes and the ocean, where it is deposited. Our sandy beach started out as mountains.

The natural landscape is a true superhero, a model of efficiency that cleans the water and stores it for future use while slowing the flow to mitigate flooding and providing habitat. It is important to understand how watersheds function naturally. In the built environment, things like dams, lined channels and developed landscape change those processes. Next time I will present changes specific to Carpinteria Valley Watersheds, and how things like more intense rainfall and fire can further impact the processes.

Louis G. Soto 1/17/1920 – 10/7/2018

Louis Soto, 98, of Carpinteria passed away peacefully in his home. Louis was preceded in death by his beloved wife Angela.

He is survived by his two sons Louis (Linda) and Peter (Nancy). Grandchildren Daniel, Joseph, Casey and Eric (Carol).

Great grandchildren Ramona, Nina, Daniel (deceased) and Alana; great great grandsons Parker and Cooper; and great great grandson Zalen.

Louis was a World War II veteran, awarded the Purple Heart medal. He worked for Santa Barbara Unified School District for 23 years. He retired in 1981. He loved to keep busy, and through the years he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Later on, he started fixing and selling bicycles.

He is lovingly remembered and missed by all his family and friends.

Thank you all for your beautiful sympathy cards and love, Soto family.

When they were young, my boys would wake up in the morning and one would ask, “What are we doing today?”

The other one would announce, “Today I want to go to the park, go swimming, and [insert fun activity].” Two terrific kids, two very different ways of thinking about the day. No matter their approach, we adults owe it to our kids to value their thinking, and help them stretch and learn to think in sophisticated ways. Below are a couple of strategies you can use with the child in your life.

Ask “no right answer” questions

Ask your child plenty of open-ended questions that do not have one correct answer and for which you do not have an answer in mind. If you don’t have an answer in mind, you will be more open to seeing the value in your child’s answer.

If there is only one correct answer to a question, it is about recalling information, not about thinking deeply. Compare the thinking required to answer 1) a recall question and 2) a question that requires more complex thinking: How many legs does an insect have?

What would you do differently if you were an insect and had all of those legs?

The second question calls for open creativity, taking a different perspective, and hopefully having a good time coming

up with a response. The adult can check along the way to be sure the child knows an insect has six legs. These sentence starters may jump-start your open-ended questioning: Why do you think…., How did you…., and What would happen if….

Ask your child to extend her thinking

Follow a comment from your child with one of these thought extenders to encourage her to think more deeply: Say some more about that – what else do you think?

What do you think about that? Why is it (good, bad, happy, say, scary….)

What could happen next? What’s your prediction?

What part of this interests you most? Why is that?

Most importantly, asking your child to think and extend her thinking shows her that her thoughts and ideas are important and worthy of further exploration and development. Alistair Cooke, a British-born American journalist, put it this way: “The best compliment to a child or a friend is the feeling you give him that he has been set free to make his own inquiries, to come to conclusions that are right for him, whether or not they coincide with your own. Enjoy talking with your youngsters!”

Ultimately, the Planning Commission voted 3-1 to recommend approval of Ordinance No. 726. A set of comprehensive, citywide personal use and commercial cannabis regulations will now head to City Council, with the recommendation to prohibit residents from growing cannabis outdoors for personal use.

Whistle Stop Art Studio opens new show

“The Sound of Color,” a show of new paintings by the Whistle Stop Art Studio artists, is on exhibit at Zookers Restaurant, 5404 Carpinteria Ave., through Dec. 16. Arts Center seeks online votes to win live music grant

The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center is in the running to bring a 10- to 12-week live music series to Carpinteria during the summer of 2019. The center hopes to qualify for $25,000 as one of 15 winning organizations competing in the annual Levitt AMP Grant Awards from the Mortimer & Mimi Levitt Foundation.

Chinelos performers make their way down Linden Avenue—the word “chinelos” comes from the Nahuatl word “zineloquie” which means “disguised.” The elaborate dress, gloved hands, up-tilted beard and arrogant stance mocks the salon dancing of the upper classes during the period of French intervention as well as Porfirio Díaz’ attempts to “Europeanize” Mexico at the end of the 19th century.

The Chinelos developed in the state of Morelos, whose 19th century sugar-cane haciendas made great fortunes for their owners but left workers impoverished. Four large municipalities in the st with histories extending to the pre-Hispanic perio are famous for their chinelos: Tlayacapan, Tepoz Yautepec and Jiutepec.

Celebrating, not mourning, the dead Día de Los Muertos comes to Carpinteria

PHOTOS bY JOSHuA CurrY On Sunday, Nov. 4, the Aztec Ceremonial Dance Group Kaipulli Huitzlin Ihuan Xochilt led the 5th annual Día de Los Muertos parade down Linden Avenue.

Keeping the traditions of Mexico vibrant with chinelos, calaveras and calacas, participants painted faces, donned costumes and made merry to celebrate the lives of departed loved ones. With origins in Aztec, Toltec, and other Nahua cultures that considered mourning the dead disrespectful, Día de Los Muertos keeps the memory and spirit alive of those who have passed.

The new fountain at Carpinteria Garden Park, a gift from Carpinteria Beautiful (CB), was dedicated on Saturday, Oct. 27, at the start of the Garden’s one year anniversary celebration. CB member Harry Manuras inspired the group to make a contribution, and when garden manager Alena Steen mentioned she’d like to have a water feature to attract birds to the garden, the fountain project was born. CB members Barbara and Brad Smith, Deana McMillion and Donna Jordan teamed up to make it happen.

Christie Boyd, longtime manager of Porch, helped to select, order and install the fountain. Master electrician Keith Stein volunteered his time and talents to hook up the power. A stone inscribed “For the Birds” became the finishing touch.

At Carpinteria Morning Rotary, Erik Talkin, executive director of Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, discussed food insecurity. According to Talkin, many families with food insecurity struggle to determine where their next meal will come from. The Foodbank is open to all individuals in need and the nearest distribution point can be located by calling 211. Steamrolling Rams squash first-round CIF opponents

Cate School, the state’s number-one ranked team in Division-one Eight-man football, took on Desert Christian of Lancaster in the first round of the CIF-SS Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 2, under the lights of Valley Memorial Stadium at Carpinteria High School. The Knights, the third- place entrant from the Desert Mountain League proved no match for the independent, undefeated Rams, as they fell to 3-7 on the year in an 89-15 drubbing. Cate’s record improves to 9-0 on the year.

The Rams took control from the start.

After the defense forced the visitors from Antelope Valley to punt on their first possession, Cate capped a short drive with senior quarterback Jack Deardorff finding room off left-tackle for a 16-yard touchdown run with still 10:14 to play in the opening quarter. Junior kicker Will Anderson, who earlier in the week won the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table’s Phil Womble Award, tacked on the extra point to make it 7-0. The Knights fared no better on their next drive as Ram’s junior Callum Casey blew up the play in backfield, tackling senior quarterback Travis Hallam for a two-yard loss. They were forced to again punt the ball back to the Rams.

On the first play of Cate’s second possession, Deardorff flicked a shovel pass to fellow senior running back Drew Anastasio for a 66-yard touchdown, putting the score at 13-0 with a little over nine minutes left in the quarter. After gaining a first down on freshman Tony Reyna’s 10-yard run, Desert Christian was forced to punt yet again, and the Rams were back in business at the their 36-yard line.

Deardorff then found his senior tight end Jake Nelson on a screen pass, and Nelson sprinted down the left sideline for a 44yard touchdown to make the score 19-0.

“I was pleased with the way the first

teamers came in … and jumped on them early,” said Cate coach Ben Soto.

But the onslaught was just beginning.

Deardorff added an 18-yard touchdown run and with the two-point conversion, the lead went to 27-0. Anastasio tallied another touchdown run, this time from 15 yards out, and the score became 350. Junior defensive end Scott Holmes scooped up a fumble and returned it 42 yards for another TD. By the end of the first quarter, the Rams had built a 42-0 lead.

“We’re not in the business to embarrass anybody, we executed, we blocked, we ran the ball, we didn’t pass the ball,” explained Soto who inserted second team players after his squad amassed a huge lead. Sophomore running back Will Deardorff, Jack’s younger brother, added touchdown runs of 58, 41 and 53 yards, and his elder brother put two more in on the ground himself. Junior running backs Khadim Pouye and Dalton Phillips also run one in apiece.

“From the get-go, we knew when we started the season, we wanted to put pressure on the defense,” said Soto.

“As a defensive coordinator, who am I going to try and stop first?” added the long-time coach of his team’s abundant offensive weapons.

Trailing 62-0, Desert Christian finally got on the board with a little over six minutes left to play until halftime, when Reyna burst up the middle for a 36-yard touchdown. He added another with 2:38 until the break to make it 62-15, but the game was still far out of reach. Cate travels to play Winward of Los Angeles, the seventh-ranked team in the State, on Thursday, Nov. 9, with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

CHS Warrior boys water polo team left, faced the Santa Monica Vikings, Oct. 31.

October 31 - The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team traveled to Santa Monica to face the Vikings in their second round CIF match, falling by a score of 10-6. “The Warriors kept it close, with only a two-goal deficit (3-5) at one point, but were unable to capitalize and eventually fell …,” said Carpinteria assistant Sergio Castaneda. “The entire varsity squad played their heart out …,” added Castaneda.

The Warriors finish their season with 17 wins and six losses, and a flawless 6-0 league season for their first-ever Citrus Coast League Championship.

Girls tennis October 31 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team beat the Oakwood Gorillas in a CIF Division Four first round match, 10-8. “Josie Gordon played brilliantly in the last round, coming back from a 4-3 deficit to turn it around and win the next three games and virtually sealing the victory,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. In singles, Gordon finished 1-2, and Vicky Delk and Sydney Endow each picked up games with their efforts. In doubles, Carpinteria with Vivi Torres/Leigh Pluma, Amy Perez/Karla Marin and Jeannette Carrillo/Lexi Persoon, won all three sets. “I was really proud of their efforts today, I don’t think we started out too well but we sure finished strong,” explained Bryant. The Warriors are now 18-6 on the year.

November 2 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis season came to an end at the hands of Mark Keppel in a second round Division Four CIF playoff match as the Aztecs beat the Warriors, 12-6. “In doubles, after being down 0-3 in the first set, Karla Marin/Amy Perez caught up and then went back and forth before winning in a tiebreak,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant. Vivi Torres/Leigh Pluma also went down early in their first set, but also bounced back to win. Jeannette Carrillo/ Lexi Persoon went 1-2 for the Warriors last team point. “Carpinteria finishes the season 18-7 overall and we say good bye to the backbone of the team in seniors: Jessica Santillan, Vivi Torres, Leigh Pluma, Josie Gordon, Karla Marin and captain Amy Perez, not just great players, but quality girls as well,” said Bryant. The Warriors were Co-Champions with Malibu for the Citrus Coast League Title.

The Warrior boys cross country team finished fifth overall in the Citrus Coast League Finals at Lake Casitas, Oct. 31.

Cross country October 31 - The Carpinteria High School cross country team competed in the Citrus Coast League Finals held at Lake Casitas in Ojai. The Warrior girls finished fourth place overall behind Fillmore, Nordhoff and Hueneme respectively, while the boys finished fifth place overall, as Fillmore took first place. Shayla Alvarez finished in fifth place with a time of 20:40.9 to qualify as an individual for the CIF Prelims for the girls. “Shayla really went after it today, she was not intimidated by the competition and quickly jumped up front with the lead pack,” said Carpinteria coach Angel Silva. Other Carpinteria girls finishers included Savanah Alvarez in 10th at 21:50.3, Edith Lopez in 21st in 23:25.8, Kate Cooney, 29th in 24:13.9, Kara Chatterton, 32nd at 25:20.8 and Kendra Meza, 38th in 27:30.7. Caleb Classen was Carpinteria’s top boys finisher in 13th place with a time of 17:24.8. Other Carpinteria boys finishers included: Ytxzae Enriquez in 15th at 17:31.0, Victor Rinaldi, 32nd in 18:58.8, Dexter Gordon, 34th in 19:23.7, Luke Nakasone, 35th in 19:32.8, and Esteban Zapata, 37th in 21:12.8.

Girls tennis October 31 - The Cate School girls tennis team lost a 14-4 contest against visiting Mira Costa in a rematch of last year’s CIF Division One playoffs, but this time Mira Costa came in seeded number-one in the tournament. Cate got a 2-1 day from junior Grace Fuss in singles as she battled back from being down 5-1 in her third round match, rattling off six straight games to close her singles season out with a win. Junior Carol Cai added a win in singles. In doubles, senior captain Sarah Polowczak and her sophomore partner Fritze Mayer faced a set point down 5-4 but rallied to force a tiebreaker, and took it by a score of 7-5. Cate finishes 13-2 on the year with an exact mirror image of last season—their two losses coming against crosstown rival San Marcos High in the regular season and Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach in the playoffs. The Rams clinched their fourth-straight undefeated Tri-Valley League Title.

“Today, I asked the girls to go into this match with the intent of achieving two things: to use the strength of their opponents to bring out the best in their own games and to play in a way with which they can be proud,” said Cate coach Trevor Thorpe. “I’m happy to say that we accomplished both of those things today.”

We of a certain age remember from our youth the parade of professionals that traveled to our neighborhoods delivering their wares. The milk man, the egg man and the bread man were ubiquitous and necessary throughout rural and suburban communities, announcing their arrivals with gently clanging bottles, the toot of a horn, or the raising of a sliding steel door. When my family lived in North Hollywood in the ‘60s there was also the lemonade man, who was a favorite of ours because he sold from his truck what is best described as icy slushies in a cup, flavored with your choice from a myriad of syrups. Not many things were better on a hot summer day.

Alas, the lemonade man gave way to the corner 7-Eleven, and most delivery men lost their livelihoods to the growing prevalence of a second car in the driveway. With her own wheels, the woman of the house no longer needed her platoon to help get meals on the table, and those nostalgic sounds of yore faded as an echo.

In my own journeys as a personal historian, I’ve often come across other interesting occupations that modern times have also rendered obsolete. Here are a select few.

Before personal earbuds, well-spoken gentlemen held the attention of those wanting to disassociate from their surroundings. A lector was hired by management to read to factory employees plying away at menial tasks in large manufacturing plants. Sometimes the workers pooled their money and hired one themselves, perhaps as a way to have a say in what the lector read. Who wouldn’t prefer the local news or a bawdy novel over the Wall Street Journal or Moby Dick?

Knocker Upper

Though it sounds rather irresponsible, to say the least, this was a person many people relied upon. Knocker uppers were the predecessors of alarm clocks, and traveled their routes knocking on windows with long sticks or pebbles to wake up their customers. Like any annoying alarm, the knockers would not give up until a bed-headed client was properly roused.

I first heard of this occupation from a client who grew up on the outskirts of town. As she told me, “The ice cream man didn’t come there because it was too rural, but the rag man would come.

The parents would say to their children, if you don’t behave I’m giving you to the rag man! And that scared us. He had a horse and a buggy and he drove down the streets saying rags, rags, and people came out and gave him their rags.” I’ve since learned that the rag man collected old clothes, broken furniture, paper, shattered glass and any bits of foil to sell to salvage operators. The rag man was the original recycler.

Someone who “severely mutilates, disfigures or damages by cutting, tearing or crushing”? This is how the 20-year-old woman who lived next door to my greatgrandparents earned her living? What in

Now, a short story regarding the previously mentioned lemonade man. My favorite thing about him was that my parents enjoyed his offerings, too. When he appeared on late summer afternoons, my mom would press an extra 15 cents into my palm and ask me to get a “large plain” for her and my dad. A plain was lemonade flavored, which was okay tasting to me, but I never could understand why they wanted that when they could have had root beer. Still, I’ll never forget the warm feeling it gave me seeing them sitting on the planter wall in our front yard, passing the cup back and forth between them, talking and laughing

with each other while they watched the goings-on of the neighborhood. It was only within the last decade that my mom divulged their secret to me—they spiked their large plain with vodka. No wonder they didn’t want the root beer. Life in the ’burbs.

Lyle and Kathleen Mattes of Carpinteria enjoyed several days in London, followed by a cruise around the British Isles with excursions in nine ports. They also visited Ireland’s Blarney Castle (Caisleán na Blarnan in Irish) a medieval stronghold in County Cork, Ireland, near River Martin. The castle is home to the famous Blarney stone, which when kissed, is said to give eloquence.

Playing pelota in the Basque country with CVN

Marilyn Jenkins and Gerald Lubeck recently completed a 10-day trip through Spain. They stayed in Barcelona, Terragona and San Sebastian, part of Basque country. The highlight of their trip was a private tour through the French Basque countryside. They visited the quaint villages of Elizondo, St. Etienne de Baigorri, St. Jean Pied de Port and Espelete. Espelete is famous for its red peppers, first imported from Mexico, and for recently hosting one of the final legs of the Tour de France. Their guide and owner of the tour company, Go Basque, was fantastic, buying them traditional Basque pies, visiting a private garden where he purchases tomatoes for his family, and stopping at a small hardware store where cowbells, wooden bowls used in Basque cooking and pelota paddles (traditional game) were on display.
