For many years, local businesses/community organizations have generously supported the Carpinteria Branch Library’s Summer Reading Program and National Library Card Sign-Up Month by donating gift certificates for goods and services.

These donations are incentives for readers of all ages and help to engage library patrons with local businesses and community organizations.

This year, the library is asking the community to support local businesses by purchasing a gift certificate from a Carpinteria business/organization. Hospice offers “Coping with Covid-19” series

Sidewalk dining downtown

My grandfather (Ollie Prickett, founder of the Alcazar Theatre) came to Carpinteria when times were tough, so he built a movie theater in a circus tent. He thought “outside the box” and came up with a solution that changed the town forever. Covid-19 has changed how we do things. We have to find a solution that allows social distancing and cleanliness while still preserving our way of life. It’s time to think “outside the box.”

Let’s block off sections of downtown from cars and allow restaurants to move their seating outside on the sidewalk and street. Imagine dining at your favorite restaurant in an outdoor environment, greeting family and friends as they stroll down our streets!

Cement barricades could be decorated with paintings and flower boxes. Start with restaurant-heavy areas like the 900, 700 and 600 blocks. This would still allow for access to businesses and homes via cross streets. We could do the same at the Shepard Place Shops on Casitas Pass Road, closing off the one row of parking directly in front of restaurants to allow safe outdoor seating in front of their business while still allowing for one-way traffic and parking.

We’ve done this before, folks. We block streets off for the Avocado Festival every year, and the Farmer ’s Market every week. It’s not rocket science. There are smart, resourceful and creative people in this town. City leaders and the business community could come together and explore solutions. My grandad took a problem, and came up with a solution that changed Carpinteria for the better.

Let’s put our heads together and turn a problem into a solution that makes Carpinteria a better place. Together, we can do this!

Fairness in parking

I am writing to voice my concern that there has not been a concession on beach parking for all Carpinteria residents.

There are very few things we can take our kids to do, and a two-hour limit imposed on locals that don’t happen to live in the beach area is inequitable. Locals are being penalized for the irresponsible behavior of out-of-town visitors.

I am requesting that all Carpinteria residents receive at least one parking permit to utilize the beach. I understand I could move my car, however, that would require either leaving my children on the beach unattended or packing everything up and then going back down.

Alternatively, perhaps the city could work out an agreement with Carpinteria State Beach to allow Carp’s non-Beach Neighborhood residents to park in the lot at Linden and State Beach, with a permit.

This would both ease parking demands within the beach neighborhoods and continue to discourage out of town visitors from flooding our beaches during this time. Since the kiosk is already staffed, this would help alleviate the city code

Clarification needed

Linden Managers LLC needs to clarify where the extra 31 public parking spaces will physically be (Letters, CVN, Vol. 26, No. 32) to make a total of 144 spaces.

OK—some fourth-grade math: There are currently 113 existing spaces. If the proposed hotel footprint will sit on 52 of those spaces and 40 spaces will be for hotel guests, 10 spaces for the cafe and two (really?) spaces for employees, that means a total of 104 existing public parking spaces paid for by the city of Carpinteria… that means an extra 40—not 31—spaces will need to materialize from somewhere to get to the magical number of 144 total parking spaces. Whew!

No wonder these parking space numbers are hard to keep track of. Nowhere in Mr. Hollis’ letter did he mention where these extra developed parking spaces will be. Will these graded and paved new spaces come from the last open public space next to the Community Garden behind Elm, Holly and Ash streets? Why hasn’t this developer produced a map for the public to review in the Coastal View News that most Carpinterians read, instead of asking you to log into their website? Maybe send out flyers or put a map up in a public area.

I would encourage all residents from 9th Street to Sandyland (especially 5th Street) to walk around and see how this open space will look as a paved developed parking lot—not just for Carpinterians, but for visitors looking for an easy way to the beach. How many homes will be impacted with this extra traffic?

These questions need to be answered with honesty and transparency so all residents will have a clear idea of how they will be affected

Foreseeing the impacts

My wife and I have lived peacefully and quietly at the corner of Dorrance and Elm, a block away from the Spot, for 15 years now. We have just reviewed drawings for the proposed hotel on the train station parking lot and are dismayed to see plans that include what is called the Elm Parking Lot. To accommodate access to 83 parking spaces, the city and the developer seek to route all parking traffic south across the tracks, past The Spot, and into the streets of the Downtown Beach Neighborhood. What are they thinking?

This is our quiet residential neighborhood. Dorrance is the narrowest of our streets. Children play at the dead end of Elm. What of our health? What of our safety? What of our peace and quiet?

They ask too much—this plan is simply untenable.

Public education reimagined

With the coronavirus pandemic of 2020 bringing our economy to its knees, we are presented with a unique opportunity to reimagine everything and embrace bold innovation. Of particular interest to me is the interchange between our economic system, capitalism and our government system, democracy. What has surfaced through extensive research is that capitalism, our economic system, and democracy, our political system, require opposite sets of personal skills, habits and attitudes to thrive. Capitalism is competition and consumption, requiring character traits of complacency and insecurity to maximize profits. Democracy, on the other hand, is cooperation and community, requiring confident, questioning and critically thinking minds that consistently and actively engage with and participate in local and national politics.

Reflecting on the past 100 years of American history shows that unbridled capitalism brings out insatiable human greed and thirst for power rather than the human philanthropy that capitalism

was based on. Research revealed that the lure of wealth and power has consistently capsized vulnerable democratic ideals.

We have learned much about child psychology in the 100 years since public education was made compulsory in USA and right now we have the opportunity to re-imagine public education to serve democracy, stop conditioning kids to consume but rather how to live in harmony and prosperity for all. I have designed a new system for public education, a utopian vision of what a system for public education could look like had it been designed to suit the philosophy of John Dewey’s Progressive Movement rather than Horace Mann’s Prussian model back in the 1920s. The Intentional Communities System for Public Education changes every single facet of the existing system and prioritizes the building of character traits to serve democracy as well as knowledge learning.

Rate increase resistance

The Carpinteria Valley Water District Board of Directors apparently has chosen to remain silent on the question of postponing the proposed and noticed May 27 public hearing on water-rate increases. Nor have they announced that the public would have any opportunity to participate in person via a virtual connection, thus subjecting anyone who wishes to participate in person, at the height of this unimaginable virus pandemic, to exposure to a crowd of people in a confined space in order to give the district their comments in person.

The district is relying on the standard protocol of requiring a written protest by the close of the public hearing on May 27.

Email protests to General Manager Robert McDonald are apparently not wanted, nor valid, because the district requires an original signature on letters submitted.

The district’s notice letter does not even give an email address to send protests, nor does it mention this little glitch, nor does it provide any alternative means to submit without sending a letter response, or appearing in person—apparently, a phone call to district management is also not valid.

The district well knows from past rate increases that the chances of getting 50 percent of property owners and customers to turn in the requisite written protests is not a bet to take, i.e. they will simply go through the motions and impose whatever rate increases they deem necessary, without taking seriously any other alternative business plan to avoid such increases. The board should postpone the public hearing for a minimum of 90 days to allow for a public hearing that can have real meaning, and not require citizens to endure a virus threat or stand in line all evening in order to exercise their legal right to oppose this rate increase.

Covid-19 deaths reach double digits On May 12, Santa Barbara County Public Health Department reported 11 deaths among people who tested positive for Covid-19. There are now 1,371 confirmed cases of Covid-19, of which 495 have fully recovered. Health care workers make up 66 of the total number of cases.

In the South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria, there are 23 confirmed cases and no deaths. Lompoc’s federal prison has 896 cases, including two deaths. Other cities showing steady rises include Santa Maria with 186 cases, including two deaths; city of Lompoc with 92, including two deaths; and Santa Barbara with 69 cases and one death. Goleta has 11 confirmed cases and two deaths.

The county has now given 9,072 tests for Covid-19. Ninety were inconclusive

and 7,611 were negative. There are currently 39 people hospitalized for Covid-19 related illnesses of which 10 are in the ICU. While most cases of Covid-19 exhibit mild or moderate symptoms, the county’s growing case numbers and deaths from Covid-19 underscore the urgent need for all residents to take extra steps to protect those who are particularly vulnerable to developing more serious illness, including elderly persons and those with underlying health conditions, such as, diabetes, cancer, immunodeficiency and asthma.

Community Pool to reopen Monday

Starting on Monday, May 18, the city of carpinteria will reopen the community Pool for limited swimming in a manner consistent with state and county public health orders.

A maximum of five swimmers will be allowed to use the pool at once, and reservations must be made online in advance.

Swimmers can reserve one-hour time slots and will be allowed 45 minutes of swim time. Patrons must come showered and dressed for swimming; locker rooms are closed, and a restroom will be available only for restroom use. in the city of carpinteria’s announcement, they noted that according to the centers for Disease control, there is no evidence that Covid-19 can spread to people through pool water. Proper operation and disinfection of pools should kill the virus that causes Covid-19.

Among those most excited about residents being able to take a cool dip on a hot May day, is Aaron Syvertson, the Community Pool’s new superintendent. Syvertson moved to Carpinteria and started his new job at the end of March, after the pool had been temporarily closed. “i came to carpinteria to manage a pool that people swim in,” said Syvertson, “i’d like to be able to keep doing what we do. Countywide coalition of nonprofits targets senior food insecurity

During the coronavirus pandemic, many older community members, particularly those living alone, are not receiving the support they need, according to the Central Coast Community Action Commission (CAC), which has joined forces with several Santa Barbara County nonprofits to identify isolated seniors and connect them to essential services or critical needs, such as food and supplies.

The coalition is led by Family Service Agency of Santa Barbara County (FSA) and includes partner organizations, Commission for Senior Citizens, Center for Successful Aging, CAC, Carpinteria Children’s Project, Community Partners in Caring, Cuyama Valley Family Resource Center, Lompoc Valley Medical Center, Lompoc Valley Community Healthcare Organization and Santa Ynez Valley People Helping People.

“During California’s stay at home order, older Californians rely on friends and neighbors to help them obtain basic necessities like groceries and prescriptions,” said Lisa Brabo, FSA executive director. “We are here to help those who might otherwise not have a consistent safety net of support to receive needed food and supplies.”

The provision of culturally competent outreach and assistance is a grassroots effort, community by community, stated the CAC. To obtain assistance, call the Senior Connection at (805) 925-9554.

The project was initiated by a funding consortium of the James S. Bower Foundation, Wood-Claeyssens Foundation and an anonymous donor, and has received additional funding from the Zegar Family Foundation.

Cannabis dispensary donates $12k to Foodbank for Covid-19 response

At food distributions across the county, lines have grown as the financial strain of joblessness has pushed more families into food insecurity. The Foodbank of Santa Barbara County has seen demand double and now serves 1-in-3 Santa Barbara County residents, making continued funding and resources more important than ever during the pandemic.

The Farmacy of Santa Barbara, the city’s first retail cannabis store, raised funds over a six-week period to support the Foodbank and its mission of feeding the hungry. Over that period, 5 percent of sales from select brands totaling $8,000 and 5 percent of all sales on April 20 ($3,400) were collected to donate to the Foodbank. The Farmacy Give-Back Program is conducted in partnership with CARP Growers, the cannabis farmers group in Carpinteria, and its member farms. Five percent of sales of CARP-certified brands, grown in Carpinteria, go toward community causes.

Nathalie Keller, Foodbank development manager, said the donation has come at precisely the right time.

To meet the demand brought upon by Covid-19, Foodbank now operates 50 food distribution locations and supplies 6,000 stocked grocery bags each week through the sites.

“We have been fortunate to have partners all over the county who have stepped up in support of our efforts.

The Foodbank has been able to grow its services very quickly in response to economic hardships that have pushed so many in the county into food insecurity,” Keller said.

“There is no greater need right now in the county than providing nutrition, and fortunately the Foodbank is very good at what it does,” said Graham Farrar, owner of the Farmacy. “The Foodbank has been everywhere and has done a remarkable job facing this challenge. We hope our contribution will help to sustain the effort and meet every need.”

The Farmacy of Santa Barbara initially kicked off its Give-Back Program over the holidays to benefit Freedom Warming Centers of Santa Barbara County, which provides pop-up homeless shelters on harsh winter nights.

Farrar also owns Glass House Farms in Carpinteria, a CARP member farm. Other Give-Back Program participating farms are Pacific Stone Brand, Autumn Brands, Josh D Farms, Cresco Cannabis and Headwaters.

“Voters approved legal cannabis in part because of the social benefit provided through taxes and shared success. Our customers at the Farmacy and farmers in Carpinteria all participate in this social benefit through our Give-Back Program, which is a beautiful, collaborative effort,” said Farrar, who is vice president of CARP Growers.

City ratifies beach parking restrictions and mandates masks in businesses

Last weekend, the city of Carpinteria’s code compliance officers issued 24 citations and towed five cars that broke with the new two-hour timed parking and “no parking” restrictions for Fridayto-Sunday use in portions of the Beach, Concha Loma and Downtown neighborhoods. Despite several complaints from residents, Carpinteria City Council ratified the temporary weekend parking restrictions and expanded to include holidays. In addition to parking enforcement, beaches were populated with increased staffing of lifeguards, code compliance officers and Sheriff’s deputies.

The parking restrictions were initially enacted by City Manager Dave Durflinger—who also serves as the city’s director of emergency services—to fight back against growing congestion on Carpinteria beaches that presents challenges to maintaining and enforcing Covid-19 social distancing protocol. If the city determines that beach users cannot follow social distancing measures, they could close the beaches, according to Durflinger, who stated that the city continues to prioritize state and county social distancing orders.

On April 17, the city first closed its city beach parking lots at the end of Linden, Elm, Holly and Ash avenues as well as the diagonal parking spaces on Linden Avenue south of the railroad tracks. Last week, Durflinger announced that new “Covid-19 Parking Restrictions” would take effect on May 8. From 6 a.m. every Friday to 6 a.m. on Monday, portions of the Beach and Concha Loma neighborhoods have twohour time limits on parking.

Residents impacted by the restrictions received two parking permits per household exempting their vehicles from the restriction. Additionally, the city implemented “no parking” areas on some portions of downtown streets that are heavily used for beach access, including Linden, Palm and Walnut avenues and 5th and 6th streets.

Residents impacted by the “no parking” restrictions submitted a petition to the city to receive parking permits, and on Monday night, City Council agreed, expanding the residential parking permit program to include households on 6th Street between Walnut and Maple avenues and on Palm Avenue between 6th and 8th streets.

Parking violation fines are $35 and $200 for towing. The cars are stored in Carpinteria lots.

Councilman Fred Shaw noted that many Carpinterians who live outside the Beach Neighborhood have voiced complaints that they have trouble finding parking now. “What is the possibility of having locals use the State Parks parking lot?” he asked. Shaw suggested residents could show I.D. and pay a fee. “That would certainly allow more locals to access the beach, and because they have to show proof of living in Carpinteria, it would keep out-of-town people from parking in that lot.”

While Durflinger noted that his team is keeping close contact with State Parks to move together and be consistent on policy changes since “we share a stretch of coastline that includes city, county and state beaches,” he had not previously proposed that idea. “I’m guessing they might not be able to implement that because they are a state agency and must be consistent with state use policies for beaches.”

Councilman Roy Lee suggested “the beach badge,” an idea that was presented in a public comment letter. “Residents can purchase a badge to go to the beach for a day or a month,” said Lee, “we could mitigate the amount of people who come to our city and use our beach and parks.

We can—not control—but have more say in our beaches about who comes. The ones who don’t follow our rules, they won’t be issued a badge.”

“Beach badges” or other “pay to play” passes for beach access, such as states like New Jersey have, present significant legal challenges in California, stated Durflinger. “One of the key founding principles of the California Coastal Act is that the coastline is everybody’s and needs to be available to everybody at no cost. In California, we can’t charge people to gain access to the beach. The beach is free. It’s a public resource for everybody to enjoy.” Durflinger noted that he could “look into” if it’s possible as an emergency measure.

Durflinger also noted that Los Angeles beaches might reopen as soon as this week, and that Ventura is also reassessing its “keep it moving” open beaches and trails policy.

Several comments from the public expressed that the parking permits created an inequity, favoring access to the community’s “crown jewel” for people who live near the beach. “But that wasn’t the purpose,” said Durflinger. “The purpose was to allow residents access to park near their residences.” Giving any resident who wants one a permit, noted Durflinger, would likely contribute to unsafe or high intensity use at the beach.

Following the lead of the cities of Santa Barbara and Goleta, Carpinteria’s City Council agreed to move forward with an ordinance to require individuals to wear face coverings within businesses, including all employees and customers.

City staff will draft the resolution and it will be signed either in a special meeting or the next City Council meeting.

Councilmember Roy Lee noted that most businesses had already adopted a face covering rule, but the city should formalize the mandate. Councilman Gregg Carty, agreed, but asked that the public also be provided with ample information on how to use masks, including sanitizing and care procedures.

While at least one member of the public asked for masks to also be required in open air public spaces, including the beach, City Council did not agree to require masks for outdoor spaces such as walking down the street or beaches.

In her letter to City Council, resident Gail Marshall wrote, “Mask wearing is not a financial hardship; there are people making them in our community for free . . . It’s no harder than ‘no shirt, no shoes, no service,’ which we’ve been doing for years, except wearing a mask saves lives.”

The resolution to create an ordinance requiring face coverings in indoor public spaces in the city of Carpinteria was passed unanimously.

City Council also re-ratified a proclamation of local emergency caused by the coronavirus pandemic and formed a second City Council ad hoc Covid-19 committee.

“Creative, connected and community oriented” Carpinteria Arts Center looks to weather the pandemic storm

The Carpinteria Arts Center’s executive director, Paige Van Tuyl, has come up with “three Cs” to keep her focus in these challenging times: “We have to be creative, connected and community oriented.” To that end, Van Tuyl has overseen a rapid expansion of online activities at carpinteriartscenter.org.

Free classes—including a short sevento eight-minute watercolor tutorial from Janey Cohen and an upcoming class taught by Tammy Gilkey—along with virtual home arts tours are some of the Art Center’s new online offerings.

Man on a mission: Ray Kolbe brings pollinators to Carpinteria

By ChriSTian BeaMiSh A few years back, Ray Kolbe became aware of declining bee and butterfly populations. Not content to merely turn the page on more bad environmental news, he wondered what he might do locally to help. Further researching the issue, Kolbe said he learned that “if bees have good habitat, they can survive.”

The 69-year-old retired software developer has lived in Carpinteria with his wife Jessica for five years. He was walking the Santa Monica Creek Trail/bike path between Via Real and the west-end of El Carro Lane, and remembers thinking “can we do something here?”

Calls to District Supervisor Das Williams and city of Carpinteria Environmental Coordinator Erin Maker started a process that now, three years on, is having an impact. “The city has been very helpful,” Kolbe said, “I can’t stress it enough.”

Describing the effort as a beautification project has made permitting unnecessary, and contributions of California native plants from area nurseries (S & S Seeds, ABE and Yes Yes nurseries), and mulch from the Marborg company and the city of Carpinteria, has resulted patches of sapling trees, shrubs and plants along the Santa Monica Creek spillway.

Consulting the website calscape.org to learn the native plants best suited to this region of California, Kolbe has steadily worked his way along approximately 1,000 yards of trail-side area. Landscaping flags mark new plantings so public works crews can avoid weed whipping them, and the effort is paying off. Patches of ceanothus, narrow-leaf milkweed, coastal buckwheat, gooseberry, hummingbird sage, lupin, California poppies and other wildflowers populate what had been a stretch of weeds between city-planted live oaks and sycamores.

Kolbe starts by covering a patch of foxtail weeds and burrs with mulch and sheets of black plastic held down by sand bags. The process is called solarization.

After three months, the weeds have been smothered, the plastic is removed, and another layer of mulch laid down ahead of fresh plantings. To take advantage of winter rains, Kolbe now plants in the fall.

Phase II begins: Businesses reopen, with cavea

On Friday, May 8, some low-risk businesses throughout Santa Barbara County were given the greenlight to partially reopen, but with appropriate safeguards in place, including curbside delivery for retail sales.

Antique, book, clothing, floral, jewelry, music, shoe, home and furnishing, sporting goods and toy stores can all reopen for curbside pick-up as long as they continue to maintain physical distancing protocols for staff and customers. Supply chains supporting these businesses, in manufacturing and logistical sectors, may also reopen while adhering to the physical distancing guidelines.

The partial reopening is compliant with California Governor Gavin Newsom’s Phase II of the four-part staged reopening of the state’s economy. For some businesses, this is a critical shift which will allow for increased services. For others, this will be only a slight change—in some ways, formally condoning tactics they had already implemented.

In the eight weeks of Phase I’s complete closure of nonessential storefronts, many businesses adapted their models to online orders and contactless shipping, even curbside delivery.

The owner of Carpinteria’s Murphy’s Vinyl Shack, Kevin Murphy, said that he’s happy his shop is included in the partial reopening, but he’s not sure how big the impact will be.

“We’re working with the powers that be and code enforcement to reopen and do what we can to honor the health environment,” he said. “But selling vintage records isn’t like a takeout meal. If you’re a pizza place it’s a natural, but for a record shop, you can’t just say, ‘give me a record but hold the pepperoni.’”

Up until this week, the shop had been completely shut down. “Some customers care about our longevity and reached out,” said Murphy, “so we were able to sell curbside. Mainly people who called were just wanting to do whatever they can to support us, but there’s only so much people can do.” Murphy’s is on Instagram and has tried other online promotions, but selling records is “really about the experience of browsing in the shop.”

So far, Murphy’s Vinyl has been able to keep their head above water. Most of their stock is on hand and they’re not losing any money on it. “But the longer it takes, the harder it is,” said Murphy. “Even when you open the doors, it doesn’t mean that people are coming back. They’ll still have to get past the fear factor.”

Fortunately, much of Murphy’s clientele is of the younger set who he thinks will be more apt to coming back sooner, and the store is “a small gig” with usually just a handful of shoppers at any given time. “It’s not like there’s 50 people in here usually anyway,” he said, noting that being able to let people in wearing masks would make a huge difference in sales.

For Carpinteria Eye Care Center, the Phase II reopening means a lot. For the last two months, the eye care clinic located in Shepard Place Shops on Casitas Pass Road has been closed, only offering

services for eye emergencies and to help customers with broken glasses and contact lens needs. This week, they were able to reopen for eye exams two days a week and all other services four days a week.

Patients can now come into the store for an eye exam or to have their frames adjusted.

let people inside the shop, not much has changed for us in ‘Phase II.’ It’s super slow and will continue to be while the stay-at-home order is still in effect and there is no tourism or day trippers—a major customer base at this time of year.”

Seaside Makers has promoted sales by offering free shipping, delivery or pick up and adjusted to online and phone-in sales.

Yesterday, a patient came in with scratched lenses and asked, ‘how is it that these other businesses were open, but people who offer needed eye care were not?’ But that was the governor’s request and we abided.”

While closed, Eye Care optometrists Dr. Steven M. Kleen and Dr. Steven R. Kleen kept in contact remotely with patients, but now they can provide eye exams and are able to see patients again.

The clinic has been busy since partially reopening. In the first week since reopening, they have mostly filled their appointment blocks. Still, Vega noted, “there are patients that have called and are due for an eye exam but are hesitant to come in because of Covid-19 restrictions; we’re aware that it’s going to take some time.”

It’s a brutal time for any brick and mortar-based business right now. The Carp shop was our first and holds a special place in my heart as a Carp resident. I really hope we can keep it open, but if we are still in Phase II in June, that may not be a reality.”

With the second-half of senior year eviscerated, Carpinteria High School seniors now look to the future. The work they have put in thus far has set them up for the next stage—whenever that might safely come around. Carpinteria families are celebrating this unprecedented year, in spite of its difficulties, with signs from Rockwell Printers letting passersby know that Warriors inhabit the immediate area.

lEFt, Gabriel Medel received the Phil Womble Ethics in sports award as a junior and served as a captain on the league-champion volleyball and water polo teams. he earned First team all-league, and offensive Player of the year honors in water polo, and played basketball on the first team in school history to reach the state Finals and earn allleague honorable Mention. he was a leader in the Fellowship of Christian athletes, interact Club, Junior state of america and yearbook, and maintained academic all-league honors throughout high school. Medel will attend Biola University’s Engineering-Physics partnership program with the University of southern California.

Corban Pampel has enjoyed playing on the Chs tennis team, being in the band, on the water polo team, participating in Mock trial, Virtual Enterprise and Junior state of america. he has accepted his appointment to the U.s. air Force academy in Colorado.

bEloW, Gabriel Perez will attend santa barbara City College after four years at Chs. “there are too many wonderful experiences to talk about,” Perez wrote, “but one thing I’ll always remember is how tight-knit our school was, and how we all had our backs.”

Perez noted, “I’ll also remember the teachers and staff that made everything seem a little less scary. i played soccer and baseball, which were my favorite sports and will always hold those memories close to me.”

Ruby suarez transferred to Carpinteria high in her senior year “which is kind of sad,” she wrote, “because i lost all my achievements and had to leave my friends, but I’m going to finish strong.” suarez joined the interact Club, youth Wellness Connection Club, band and link Crew at Chs. she will attend santa barbara City College in the fall to start her medical career to become a midwife.

olivia sheaffer was on the tennis and swim teams at Chs and she was in band for four years. she loved being a member of FFa, raising two lambs for the county fair. sheaffer is a member of the national arts honors society, national science honors society and CsF. she will attend iowa state University in the fall where she will study textile design and production. she misses her time at Chs.

IT’S ALL SURFING CHRISTIAN BEAMISH Well over a decade ago, I went on a surf trip to the Cape Verde islands for Surfer Magazine when the idea of a global pandemic just made for a good horror film. I’d been there a decade before, as a member of an eight-man Seabee detachment tasked with building a schoolhouse with a crew of Cape Verdian soldiers. I found great waves in Cape Verde, and thoroughly enjoyed the distance from the usual military discipline of the battalion.

Indeed, some of the local shopkeepers began calling me “Rasta man” as my new Cape Verdian brothers-in-arms and I enjoyed the island’s highland agricultural products on leisurely afternoon work breaks.

One night, a few of us Seabees and our Cape Verde friends went out to a night club. We had all noticed the massive Chinese embassy on the island that we drove past each day en route to the job site. Another Chinese-financed building was being built closer to our schoolhouse project, and it was interesting to see the workers’ barracks on site and the open-pit cesspool that our interpreter explained worked with microbes that broke down the human waste. I hadn’t met any Chinese people yet, and here in this small night club, with West African pop tunes on the sound system, were about eight of them sitting together at a table.

So, crossing the room to the bar for another round of beers for my shipmates, I stopped by their table and said hello. I’m not sure what I expected, other than the possibility of meeting these guys and the two ladies with them, and maybe hitting it off, or at least having a laugh at the language barrier, or the improbability that we should find ourselves here on distant Atlantic islands far from our respective homes. Unfortunately, they didn’t see the humor in any of it—nor were they interested in hitting it off.

“No!” one of the men said to me when I approached. I hadn’t said a word, and I turned to see if he was speaking to someone else behind me. The man scowled and told me “No!” again. One of my Navy buddies came over and pulled me away, thus putting an end to my naïve attempt at diplomacy. The Cuban diplomats on the island on the other hand, complete with their Fidel-approved beards and jumpsuits, had given me communist propaganda pamphlets to read, shared a drink, and suffered my high-school Spanish level attempts to communicate. This interaction of course, is not representative of all Chinese, nor all Cubans, for that matter—but those Central Party types sent out from Bejing were not interested in having a Kumbaya moment with me.

The surf potential in Cape Verde was plain to see. Although relatively confined to the city of Praia on the island of Santiago, and more-or-less fully employed building the schoolhouse (afternoon sessions with my Cape Verde soldier friends notwithstanding), I noted several waves just out front where the fishermen launched their boats, including a volcanic reef point that did a more than passable impression of Honolua Bay at one point during my two-month deployment. I

For the following 10 years I traveled elsewhere for surfing, went to college in Santa Cruz, and grad school at San Francisco State, started shaping surfboards and wiled my way into a job at The Surfer’s Journal. A photographer friend of mine, having heard my tales of Cape Verde potential, arranged a trip on Surfer Magazine’s nickel, so I took a few weeks off from TSJ and flew back to the dry and windswept isles, 300-miles west of Senegal.

A miscommunication about the length of our stay had my photographer friend and the couple of pro surfers he’d brought along leaving the island to come home a week before my flight out. I elected to stay on alone and travel to the outer-most island of Sao Antonio in hopes of finding surf there. An inter-island flight and long ferry crossing brought me to the city of Porto Novo.

I’d met a German man and his daughter on the ferry, and we agreed to split the taxi fare for a ride into the city. On the way, I noticed a lot—perhaps 10 or more—of tightly packed shops all selling the same brightly colored plastic buckets, brushes and brooms, staffed by Chinese people, which seemed odd this far out on the most-remote island of a fairly remote island chain.

We checked into our respective rooms at the Clé de Oro hotel in town, and the German woman and I made a plan to go out for a drink. A local guy attached himself to us, and ever the smiling American, I could not shake him loose and bought us all a big pitcher of beer. Florescent strip lights, linoleum floors and plastic tables and chairs did nothing to remind me of the thatch-roof verandahs overlooking the harbor and the cobblestone streets from my previous visit (alas, a different island, and perhaps a different time in

that Navy deployment).

Here, as in the funky little nightclub back in Praia more than ten-years before, a group of Chinese men sat together at a table. There were six of them, no women.

They appeared to be workmen, their T-shirts and jeans spackled with dried concrete. My little group and I had taken a table across the room. I’d noticed the men when I ordered the pitcher of beer at the bar and gave a slight nod to acknowledge their presence.

Back at our table, the German woman and I could not get a word in, as our “guide” yammered on about the many problems he faced in his life. (Granted, I was there on a surf trip, having traveled halfway around the world for fun—a vast difference in life experience and opportunity lay between us.) But no one likes a complainer. As the man droned on, I got that unmistakable sense that I was being watched and turned to see the Chinese men glaring at me. Turning back to my tablemates, I took a sip of beer before turning again to confirm the vibe I was getting from the workmen in case I was

misreading the situation. But the looks of burning hatred were unmistakable.

The Navy SEALS (I was never a Navy SEAL) talk about how they don’t want the man who can take on the whole bar—they want the guy who can sense when a brawl is about to kick off and get out of there before it does. In that small way perhaps, I have something of the SEAL in me, but it wouldn’t have taken a particularly keen sensitivity to see that those Chinese men wanted to stomp me. And they were scary looking too, I’m not ashamed to say.

Meanwhile, the man with a thousand problems would not shut up and the German woman sat there very intent on his every word, both of them oblivious to the brewing storm across the room. Finally, I cut in and said it was time to leave. “But I just ordered a beer,” my “guide” complained. “You’ll have to drink it alone,” I told him as I stood up, and he then began to harangue me about being a typical, rude American.

Fortunately, the Chinese men did not pursue us. I made it back to the hotel, apologized to the German, who I never saw again, and locked the door to my room, the “guide” still on the sidewalk down below yelling at me through the window about how Americans deserved 9/11. And I lay there thinking about what would make those Chinese guys so hard and angry. There were certainly factors at work that would have me, in my prime working years, off on yet another surf adventure while these guys toil at their government’s plan of overseas infrastructure development and influence.

Now, of course, I’m thinking of these two interactions with Chinese people in the context of the pandemic that has come not from a lab, but from suspect cultural food practices in the “wet markets.” But this is not a screed against Chinese people. I know they are a great society in many ways. I would like to see a change, however, in that vein of exotic animal imports (tusks and tiger organs) and what seems like a ruthless push to develop Africa, and the totalitarian version of capitalism they practice, complete with concentration camps. These were two isolated incidents of mild unpleasantness I experienced with Chinese in Cape Verde that can hardly stand in for the state of affairs between our two nations.

But I fear that the hostility I witnessed, if extrapolated, might somehow offer a glimpse of a larger conflict brewing. The thing is, we have a beautiful world to tend to, and if only we could make friends and be nice everything would be great, and those worker dudes might get a chance to try surfing and lighten up a little.

vermicompost system, a beautiful homemade wooden box filled with worms that efficiently turned out scraps into rich soil. which brings me to my current situation. i have one of the aerobic systems you can buy at most hardware stores. aerobic composting is when air is introduced to break the materials down quickly. in my case, it is a round container approximately the size of my trash can that has lots of holes in it. in a perfect world, this gets turned regularly and has a great balance of wet and dry materials. in my world, things get dumped in the top and occasionally i remember that i am supposed to take care of it, which leads to one frustrated weekend morning of me poking at the compost with my pitchfork, proud that i am making soil and making false promises to myself that i am going to do this regularly. which i promptly forget for several months until it become apparent that if i don’t do something quickly, i will regret it. why am i admitting that i don’t take great care of my compost? Because even with the lack of attention, i still get great soil out of it. Turning your kitchen scraps into soil is relatively easy no matter what type of living situation you have. Composting can seem a little intimidating if you browse some of the more professional how-to guides. i have seen beautiful step by step instructions that make it seem labor intensive, but i would like to assure you that you can do as much or as little work as you would like and still get decent soil while reducing your contribution to the landfill. it is important to remember that for residential waste, compost cannot go in your green waste bin. residential green waste is turned into mulch, which is processed in a very different manner from commercial compost systems. we do not currently have the ability to have mixed curbside green waste and food waste on the south coast, but we may someday.

For now, your best options are making your own.

There are a lot of options on the market to assist with starting your own compost system. From the do-it-yourself instructions to the commercially available tabletop systems, there is something for everyone. if you have ever been curious about any aspect of turning your food waste into soil, i highly recommend starting with the helpful instructions the County of Santa Barbara resource recovery Division has put together at lessismore.org under “organics.” it is a wonderful free resource and a great starting point.

Take time to evaluate your space and be honest with yourself about how much effort you want to put in. as i have already noted i have good intentions but poor execution when it comes to taking care of my food scraps and it seems to do just fine. Currently, I have some potatoes that self-propagated in the rich soil at the bottom of my bin. i also accidentally grew tomatoes last summer, although i am in no way advocating following my footsteps when it comes to home composting. in fact, i would guess that most of you can do much better. But i am here to tell you that no matter what level of effort you want to put in, there is an option that will work for you.

COMMANDER’S RECAP

6:37 a.m. / Pandemic Party Overdose / Franciscan Court

Deputies responded with the fire department to the call of an overdose.

Within minutes, dispatch advised a second ambulance was en route for a second overdose victim. Upon arrival, it was found that four friends decided to have a party and one friend brought gifts in the form of mushrooms, cocaine, meth and molly. When asked what time the four took the mushrooms, a woman stated 5 a.m. The deputy stated that he thought that was an early start to which the partiers responded, “No, that was a late start—we have been doing cocaine all night.” Two were taken to the hospital and two stayed on scene. The remaining drugs were taken and booked for destruction.

A blind elderly male wanted to rent a room but did not have his identification card with him. A family member was called to assist with the rental arrangements.

7:41 a.m. / Vandalism / 5800 block Carpinteria Avenue

11:30 p.m. / Possession / 5900 block Via Real

A caller reported a vehicle had driven onto his property and drove through crops valued at $500. A golf driving range was also driven on, which destroyed grass and a yard marker, also valued at $500. A license plate was found on scene which had fallen off the suspect’s vehicle.

9:29 a.m. / Parking Citation / 300 block Linden Avenue

A caller reported a vehicle was parked blocking her driveway. The parking was limited due to blocked parking by the city, and tons of people flocking to the beach.

The vehicle was cited. Due to the weather and the weekend, there were many beach goers and a lot of calls for social distance violators.

6 p.m. / Vehicle Burglary / Rincon Beach parking lot

A woman reported that she parked her vehicle in the parking lot and returned to find that an unknown suspect(s) forced open her car door and took her passport and jewelry. No suspect information provided.

Monday, April 27

*Due to the weather, there were many beach goers. However, calls for social distance violations dropped significantly.

2:27 p.m. / Grand Theft / 1900 block Paquita Drive

A caller reported that she had a friend refer someone to help her at her home while she recovered from an eye surgery.

The victim later discovered that about $900 cash was missing from her home along with a gold necklace valued at $5,000. The victim last saw her jewelry on Feb. 1. The caregiver was contacted and denied taking the jewelry.

3:40 p.m. / Vandalism / 4800 block 5th Street

A woman reported that her and her brother’s vehicles were keyed on April 27 while parked on 5th Street.

3:46 p.m. / Suspicious Circumstances / 4800 block Carpinteria Avenue

A woman reported her ex-husband appears to be following her. The woman stated that she has a marriage settlement agreement filed with both parties agreeing to the man staying 100 yards away from her and her residence. The woman spotted her ex-husband driving on Carpinteria Avenue, but he was not within 100 yards of her. The woman said her ex-husband lives in Santa Barbara and has no business in Carpinteria. She was advised to obtain a criminal restraining order and to call 911 if the man contacts her in the future.

5:03 p.m. / Welfare Check / 4100 block Via Real

Two men were walking on Via Real when contacted. One of them appeared to be attempting to conceal/discard an object but was unable to do so. He was found with a fixed-blade knife in the pocket of his hoodie sweatshirt. The man also had a meth pipe, with a usable amount in the bowl, in a small case attached to his bike. The other man was also in possession of a meth pipe with a usable amount. Both were cited for the violations and released.

6:37 p.m./ Warrant / 100 block Holly Avenue

A man was observed riding his bike and when told to stop, he didn’t. The man quickly changed direction, rode down a driveway of an apartment complex on Holly Avenue, and wasn’t seen again. A report was sent to the DA’s Office. The man is on probation and has three misdemeanor warrants for his arrest.

8:57 p.m. / Dope Violations / Via Real at Casitas Pass Road

A man was stopped due to his brake light not working. During the contact an uncapped syringe was observed in plain view and a search of the vehicle revealed numerous syringes, meth, heroin and steroids. The man was cited for the violations and released.

1:31 a.m./ Dope Violations / Hwy 101 at Bailard Avenue

A man was stopped for tinted windows and found to be in possession of meth and a meth pipe.

3:02 a.m. / Stolen CDL and ID Theft / Via Real at Santa Ynez Road

A man and woman were stopped for a brake light not working and making a wide turn (crossing over the double yellow line). During the investigation, the man gave his brother’s name to avoid LA County warrants. His true identity was discovered and he was found in possession of a lot of stolen mail/CDLs/personal documents. The man and woman were both cited for various violations.

Thursday, April 30

3:03 p.m. / Lost Wallet / 6100 block Via Real

A man located a wallet near the bus bench on Via Real. The wallet contained several credit cards with a man’s name, but no driver’s license. A deputy was unable to locate a local address or telephone number for the presumed owner of the wallet and it was booked for safekeeping.

3:57 p.m. / Social Gathering / Holly at the Beach

Deputies responded to the beach and located 25-30 juveniles who were gathered and drinking on the beach. Juveniles were dispersed without incident.

Friday, May 1

8:54 a.m. / Property Damage / 700 block Linden Avenue

Deputies located broken glass and an open door at a restaurant. Announcements were made and an employee from inside the kitchen came out. The owner was contacted via telephone. The owner stated he was on-scene when the employee discovered the broken glass but was unable to stay at the restaurant at that time to make a report. The owner requested a report and he was provided a case number for the incident. No suspect information or surveillance footage is available. Nothing was missing from inside the business.

10:08 a.m. / Lost Phone / 4400 block Via Real

A woman reported that she lost her phone at 7 a.m. on April 29 outside a convenience store. At noon, the woman noticed her phone was missing and returned to the store. She observed two men holding her phone at the intersection of Santa Monica Road and Via Real.

When the woman requested her phone back the subjects fled on bikes towards Dahlia Court Apartments. The woman requested a report for the lost phone, and hoped deputies would be able to locate and return it to her.

12 p.m. / Suspicious Circumstances / 6400 block Via Real

Deputies received a request for frequent patrols between the hours of 12 and 1:30 p.m. as a woman reported that for a couple weeks on Thursdays and Fridays, two vehicles park outside the business and exchange items. The vehicles were described, deputies waited in the area and around 1:20 p.m., both vehicles were observed in a property exchange. Deputies in the area conducted two separate traffic stops for vehicle code violations and determined the items exchanged were tools and payroll documents. The parties are co-workers and work at different locations for their business.

3:21 p.m. / Neighbor Dispute / 5600 block Carpinteria Avenue

A woman reported a verbal altercation with her downstairs neighbor, and felt unsafe due to how upset a man became over a noise complaint. Report taken, documentation only.

Saturday, May 2

9:22 a.m. / Assault / 5400 block Carpinteria Avenue A man called the sheriff’s office to report being punched by one of his employees during an argument about not being paid. The man had a swollen bloody lower lip and the man he accused of hitting him had a superficial laceration on his right knuckles. The employee admitted to punching his employer after he got in his face and for not paying him.

A record check also revealed that he had a $10,000 warrant for his arrest, and the employer also signed a citizen’s arrest for the battery. The man was booked at Santa Barbara County Jail for the assault and the warrant.

6:50 p.m. / Open Container / 9th Street at Yucca Lane

While on patrol, a deputy saw a transient man in possession of an open container. The man was cited and released.

Sunday, May 3

10:47 a.m. / Expired License / Via Real and Cravens Lane

A traffic stop was initiated and a woman was found to be knowingly driving on an expired driver’s license. She was cited.

6:57 p.m. / Found Property / 400 block Palm Avenue

A caller reported that he walked under a railroad bridge near Palm Avenue and noticed two males sitting near a pile of “stuff.” The males appeared to be transients. The caller noticed a skateboard and a snowboard nearby and asked if the items belonged to them. The transients said no, so he took the items believing they were stolen. A deputy collected the items and booked them for safe keeping at the Carpinteria Station.

Monday, May 4

8:43 a.m. / Assault / 450 block Linden Ave (Amtrak station)

Deputies responded to the train station for a domestic dispute. Once there, deputies learned that a woman was battered by her boyfriend. The assault left the woman with complaints of pain and a minor visible injury on her right knee.

The man fled the scene prior to deputies arriving, and was not located.

8:55 a.m. / Vehicle Accident / Casitas Pass and Ogan Road

A man was traveling south on Casitas Pass Road, south of Ogan, and swerved to miss hitting a vehicle traveling in his lane.

The man’s vehicle collided with a tree, causing major front end damage. The man complained of back, head and neck pain and was transported by ambulance.

His vehicle was towed per his request by Love’s towing.

8:57 a.m. / Threats / 6000 block Jacaranda Way

A man made several threats to neighbors while he was drunk inside his apartment. He has had law enforcement called on him numerous times in the past for the same type of behavior. Incident report taken.

10:45 a.m./ Theft / Yucca at 9th Street

A homeless woman left her green suitcase with one wheel missing by the 9th Street public restroom on May 3, at approximately 2 p.m. The woman returned later and discovered that her property was missing. She estimated the value of all her belongings at $277. The woman does not know who stole the suitcase and city public works advised that they did not pick the suitcase up. A deputy checked the area and did not locate the suitcase.

11:53 a.m. / Obstructing Deputies / Bailard and Pandanus Street

A man was contacted at the north end of Bailard sitting in a vehicle that displayed false tabs. Upon further investigation, deputies learned the vehicle had not been registered since 2018. The man was cited, but originally refused to sign the citation. After he signed the citation, the man refused to leave the scene and started to obstruct deputies while they attempted to search the vehicle incident to it being towed. He was issued several commands to leave the area and he refused. The man was eventually arrested and booked at Santa Barbara County Jail.

m at t d u n c a n We’re still distancing. still streaming. and if you’re anything like my family, you’re doing it a lot. our latest sunday evening tradition is to rotate picking a Disney movie for all of us to watch. thomas (7) recently picked “Cool runnings” and says he is going to pick “Honey i shrunk the Kids” next week. asher (4) just picked “the little Mermaid” and did “Zootopia” before that. Clara (1), who loves animals, “picked” “the lion King.” it has been so fun.

My wife and i have also been watching a lot of tV once the kids go down. We just finished the latest seasons of “Homeland” and “Better Call saul” (both of which are great) and completed “shitt’s Creek.” anyway, rather than talking about my family’s viewing history or its budding digital traditions, i want to instead review an ongoing series that, to my total surprise, has been one of my very favorite things to watch each week, “the last Dance.” “the last Dance” is about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls in the ‘90s. it centers on the ’97-’98 season—the last of their six championship seasons—but each episode also takes you back to a storyline starting when Jordan entered the nBa in the mid-80s. “the last Dance” is great theater whether you’re into sports or not. First of all, it has characters like Dennis “the Worm” rodman, who likes dressing in drag, hangs out with Kim Jun un, dated Madonna and married Carmen electra, constantly got kicked out of games for all sorts of outrageous behavior and also happened to be one of the greatest roleplayers in nBa history. then there’s scottie pippen, the ultimate sidekick. Which is a little weird, because he was one of the best players in the world throughout his career. yet, for most of it, he played second fiddle to Jordan. He was paid less than he should have been, got less attention than he should have, and, a lot of the time, he sure didn’t like it—so much so that at one point he delayed his recovery from an injury just to stick it to the Bulls’ front office. Yet he stuck with MJ and the Bulls. then there was phil Jackson, the lanky Zen Buddhist Jordan whisperer; Bulls’ General Manager Jerry Krause, who was a thorn in everyone’s side; and nemeses like isaiah thomas and Charles Barkley.

and, of course, Jordan himself. Michael Jordan was so cool. He not only was the best basketball player of his era—perhaps ever—he was also smooth, hip, a trend setter, someone everybody wanted to be like (perhaps you remember the catchy song). He made the nBa an international draw. He got everyone to wear his shoes (they still do!). He got kids sticking out their tongues when they went to the hoop, drinking Gatorade, and practicing their fade-away jumpers ceaselessly. some of the series drama is on the court. the Bulls won six championships in the ‘90s—two “threepeats”—in an era of all-time greats like Magic Johnson, isaiah thomas, Charles Barkley, Karl Malone and patrick ewing. and Jordan was so competitive. He hated losing, hated being slighted, hated being outdone in absolutely anyway by anyone in any circumstance. so, naturally, he had beefs. then there was front-office drama. a large part of the reason the Bulls disbanded when they were still so good was because GM Jerry Krause refused to rehire Jackson as coach. that caused Jordan to step down because he refused to play for anyone else, which of course made the whole thing fall apart.

But i should also admit that part of why i love this series so much is nostalgia. i remember that era so vividly. i was born just outside of Chicago, and my family was way into the Bulls. you can stream “the last Dance”— either a tV-Ma version or the bleeped tV-14 version—on the espn app, Hulu, youtube tV or on espn.com.

Jon Washington and roxie Grant lapidus mused in “the Carpinteria thunderbowl” (“Grapevine,” sept/oct 2011) “…a discovery awaiting some future archeologist”! over the ensuing years, the covered-over racetrack has continued to be called the thunderbowl, and for a while was used for racing purposes by motorcyclists. But, to this day, even racing enthusiasts who attended the car races at the thunderbowl 4850A CARPINTERIA AVE. have trouble pinpointing exactly where on the bluffs the racetrack sat.

The mystery of Mr. Miller CVN

THE TIMES THAT BIND L I S A O ’ R E I L LY “They kept lots of secrets back then.”

So said my aunt when we spoke about her grandfather Henry C. Miller. I’ve written about this great-grandfather of mine before, the contractor who rebuilt the Santa Clara Mission in 1926 after it was destroyed by fire. He was born in 1867 in Pekin, Illinois to German immigrant parents, and was orphaned by the time he was five. His older sisters took parts in raising him, and by the time he was 22, he was living across the Illinois River in Peoria, Illinois as a bricklayer, a few years later as a contractor. In 1907 he married my great-grandmother, Elizabeth Gelser, in St. Louis, Missouri, and started their lives together.

Henry was 18 years older than his 21-year-old bride, who from the onset referred to her husband as Mr. Miller, never by his given name. The practice continued for the duration of their marriage and even after Henry died in 1937 when she talked about him to her grandchildren.

When I began leafing my family tree 20 years ago, I hit a brick wall when researching Henry’s lineage. All I knew of him was that he married my greatgrandmother in St. Louis, Missouri and had sisters. Having such a common name didn’t help matters, so that branch of the family remained in a barren state of winter for many years. Then several years ago, in conversation with my aunt, I was given a handful of clues. My aunt knew the names of his five sisters and his parents, including his mother’s maiden name. Eureka! In short order I found them all, and that winter branch broke out in spring buds.

The most interesting piece of information from my aunt, though, was a big

They had children, so I believe my mother had half-siblings. My mother told me that she went there with Grandma and looked them up once after Grandpa died.

They kept lots of secrets back then.” Well, there was something in which to sink my genealogical teeth.

It took a while to find any documents that included this common-law wife but changing search parameters to include different name spellings resulted in another Eureka moment. In the 1900 Pekin Census I found a Henry “Millen” born in 1867 to German-born parents, working as a contractor, and living with Eva. The address where they lived was one mile away from his oldest, closest sister. The record stated that Henry and Eva had been married for nine years and living with the couple was a 15 year-old female named “Mileen” (Millie?) whose relationship to Henry was listed as “adopted.”

I did a more detailed search for Henry by combing through the Peoria City Directory from 1889 until 1907, when I knew he married my great-grandmother Elizabeth. Except for the years 1899-1902 when he lived in Pekin, he is listed in the Peoria directories as a contractor until 1904, when his trail goes cold until 1907. Eva is not listed in the directories with Henry, but she does finally show up in the 1908 Peoria directory, the year after Henry wed Elizabeth. She is listed as a widow of Henry Miller, which isn’t unusual since it was taboo to be known as divorced at the time.

An unknown suspect has been tagging the new construction area for the past four weeks. The tag is “TONKA” The estimated damage is $10,000 according to Caltrans.

4:10 p.m. / Warrant Arrest / Aragon Drive at Dahlia Court

Deputies were dispatched to the area for subjects that were causing a disturbance. During contact, a man provided a false name. He was arrested for warrants and providing a false name.

6:23 p.m. / Arson / Canalino School

Carpinteria Fire called to report an intentional fire had been set inside one of the classrooms at the school. Unknown suspect(s) pushed open a window to a classroom and set a stack of paper on fire.

The principal and teacher were also on scene. The principal also stated Carpinteria High School had a similar incident earlier in the day which was unreported.

The school does not have any cameras and the perimeter fencing at the school was secure. There was no major damage to the classroom as the fire was quickly

1:58 p.m. / Vehicle Break In / Rincon Beach parking lot

A woman left her secured vehicle in the lot for an hour while at the beach. When she returned her passenger window was smashed out and her purse was stolen.

A driver’s license, credit cards and cash were also taken. The credit cards were attempted in Ventura County but declined.

No suspect information.

1:50 a.m. / Dispute / 1400 block Haida Street

A woman called to report she and her boyfriend had been in a verbal argument and stated she had hit him during the altercation. Upon the deputies’ arrival, the woman repeatedly stated she was “done” with the relationship and made statements to the effect of, “you need to take me or him, but I’m not staying here with him.” Neither party requested medical attention, and did not have any injuries.

The man was uncooperative and would not provide a statement as to what occurred before deputies’ arrival. The man stated he would leave with his sister and

not return until the following day so each of them could “cool down.” The woman agreed to stay at the residence and care for their children.

Friday, May 8

3:33 p.m. / Rock Stealing / Rincon Bluffs

City of Carpinteria called to report a citizen was stealing rocks from the Rincon Bluffs. The city requested their rocks be returned as they are set to be used for a landscaping project. The estimated value of the rocks is $1,200 to $1,500. The citizen was contacted and stated he would return or pay for the rocks.

12:57 a.m. / Narcotics Violations / 5500 block Carpinteria Avenue

Deputies were investigating a report of a domestic incident, which was unfounded. During the investigation, a woman was contacted and found to have a misdemeanor warrant. She stated that she was staying with a man in one of the units, and she consented to a search of the room.

Upon entry, meth and paraphernalia were found in plain view. The man admitted the items belonged to him and he was cited. The woman was advised to go to the courthouse to take care of her warrant.

I hit a wall last week. I was overtired, overstressed and added a dash of too much sugar and not enough exercise. I was done—unable to concentrate, accomplish much or anything, or even care that my son was on a screen for the 25th hour in a row. I’m on plenty of zoom calls with a lot of people, so I know that I’m not the only one whose gotten close to the end of her rope. Because we are all human. Of course, we are struggling.

Psychologists talk about a process that ultimately leads to growth after an upheaval in your life: trauma, despair, struggle, adaptation and resolution.

How does the story you are telling yourself about this challenging time fit with a process that leads to adaption and resolution? How are you adapting?

What resolution do you see for yourself and your family? What are the best parts of this—the growth—that you will want to keep after we have a vaccine and this crisis is really over and how can the story you tell yourself reflect that?

That big picture of our stories can frame our everyday responses during this time of constant change and uncertainty.

Even grounded in that way, moments are going to come during which we or our children need to calm, reset, reconnect with the story we want to tell ourselves, and take the next best steps.

Calming strategies can all start with increased awareness of how you are feeling in your body. Since I started learning about building resilience while working at CCP, I have become much more tuned into my body during times of stress. Just asking myself “How are you feeling in your body?” has, I am convinced, led me to be aware of tightness in my chest and throat that I suspect was always there. I know now to acknowledge the feelings in my body, accept them, and then use a strategy to bring myself back into what we call the resilient zone. Here are a few: 3-2-1 Calm is a strategy that encourages this: Notice three things you can see, two things you can hear, and one thing you can feel. As in, I see my lamp, my bed and my keyboard; I hear the birds outside and my kids talking; I feel the tension in my shoulders. The idea is to focus on things that are in your immediate environment so your brain can move from being wrapped up in emotion.

Notice your breath. One method for focusing on your breathing is to trace the fingers on one of your hands with the pointer finger of the other hand. Breath

slowly and deeply in while you move your finger away from your palm and breath slowly and deeply out while you move your finger toward your palm.

Give yourself a hug. Cross your arms, put a hand on each shoulder and gently pull. You should be your own best friend and you deserve a hug! Another take on this position is to pat your shoulders or biceps one at a time in a heartbeat pattern….bum bum…..bum bum…. bum bum. That “heartbeat” can be very calming.

A less obvious self-hug I was taught during a touch time is to wrap the fingers of one hand around the thumb of the other hand, then move to the pointer finger and across to the pinky. Do the same on the other hand. Add intentional breathing, remind yourself that you are deserving of care, and feel the calm settle in.

On Wednesday, May 6, at approximately 5:15 p.m., a teacher at Canalino Elementary School called Principal Jaime Persoon to report that a fire had been started below a window that had been pushed in. The teacher had come to campus to work, and the fire alarm went off as she entered the gate. She doused the fire—which had been started on a pile of artwork in her classroom—with a trash can of water.

In a letter to Canalino parents, Persoon wrote that “likely the offenders jumped the fence probably near the ECLC parking lot.” The gate in wing four nearest the playground had been pushed open, the principal added, and “the teacher entered her room, saw and smelled the smoke, and threw a trash can of water on the fire, and put it out. A hero!”

Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District and Sheriff’s Deputies responded. Fire personnel checked the campus, including trash cans. Superintendent Rigby, and CUSD staff members arrived, as well as two fire investigators, and the fire marshal. Sheriff’s Deputies also made an incident report and took a palm and four fingerprints from the window where it was pushed in. The fingerprints will be run against a database.

“Good news: Our fire alarms work,” Principal Persoon noted, “and the fire

department arrived as I was calling 911 as soon as I got there… The alarm system even communicated to the fire department exactly which room to go to.”

A parent had emailed Persoon the previous week that some teenage skateboarders had jumped the fences by the ECLC and were making lots of noise. The principal notified the facilities director, who inspected the area and found that someone had knocked down the construction fences and were skating around in that area.

“With students not in school, and lots of idle time, unfortunately, this leads to vandalism and poor choices,” Persoon wrote, and laid out a plan moving forward: Facilities (staff) will be working on installing hardware on the windows to prevent them from being pushed in; Sheriffs have agreed to do multiple drive-bys and even park in the lots during the evening and overnight hours; the principal will do evening inspections and custodians will double check that all gates are locked.

“If you are in the area and see anything strange or suspicious, please let me know,” the principal said. “If you hear anything from your kids about videos posted to social media about this incident or any other vandalism, please let me know right away. You can reach us at (805) 220-8836.”
