In honor of Mother’s Day, Westerlay Orchids gave away hundreds of potted blooms at last week’s emergency food distribution at Carpinteria Children’s Project.

Westerlay Orchids reaches halfway mark on “100,000 Orchid Challenge”

Over the past three weeks, Westerlay Orchids has shipped 49,000 orchids and is well on their way to accomplishing their “100,000 Orchid Challenge” to uplift and inspire communities throughout California by sending orchids to front line workers and those isolated in quarantine.

“We’re showing our gratitude to those on the front lines of this pandemic, setting a goal of sending 100,000 flowering orchids to non-profits, nurses, doctors and other essential staff in California,” said Westerlay Orchids owner Toine Overgaag. “We need the community’s help to reach this goal, so we are looking for significant financial sponsorships to help cover partial costs while ensuring the livelihood of our 120 employees and the survival of our business.”

On May 5, Carpinteria had a larger than life presence in New York City when the Nasdaq stock exchange featured a photo of Procore’s food donation to the United Boys & Girls Clubs, Carpinteria Unit, on Nasdaq Tower ’s multi-story LED screen located in Times Square. In the photo are several Procore employees and Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club Director Don Hall.

Procore was selected for the company spotlight because of their membership in the “Pledge 1%” movement, in which several software companies have committed 1 percent of their profits to philanthropic programs.

“As members of the Pledge 1% organization, Procore joins a number of software companies who are committed to giving back,” said Sasha Reed, Procore’s director of industry advancement, “On #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of giving and unity in response to the unprecedented need caused by Covid-19, we highlighted the Boys & Girls Club and Carpinteria Children’s Project right here in Carpinteria, supporting their Feeding the Kids Program through food donations.” Doug Madey, Procore’s director of communications added: “We decided to share the work that we did in the local community where we are headquartered.”

Suspected shark bite at Padaro Lane Beach, minor injury

At 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 1, Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District along with AMR Ambulance responded to a woman in her 50s that was bit by a suspected shark while swimming near Serena/ Padaro Lane.

“It is not confirmed, but highly suspected to be a shark,” said Battallion Chief Robert M. Kovach. The woman was “lap swimming” outside of Serena about 60 feet from shore. She was released from Cottage Hospital with relatively minor wounds including two one-inch lacerations to her foot.

The woman estimates that the probable shark was 5-6 feet long with a “black” dorsal fin which bumped her and swam away quickly. According to Sheriff dispatch, there were several other sightings in the area, including Santa Claus Lane and Carpinteria State Park.

Santa Barbara County Parks posted “Shark Advisory Signs” at Santa Claus Lane and Loon Point in Summerland and throughout Carpinteria from May 2 to May 3.

Face masks to be required on MTD buses

The Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) will require bus riders to wear face masks starting Friday, May 8. There will be a grace period through Tuesday, May 5, to obtain the appropriate face coverings.

Medical grade masks are not required—a simple bandana, scarf or homemade cloth mask that covers the nose and mouth will fulfill MTD’s requirement. Face coverings are also not a replacement for maintaining six feet of physical distance from others, and they must remain over the nose and mouth during the entire trip.

MTD follows the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and local Public Health officials. To that end, enhanced cleaning protocols have been implemented since early March. These protocols include nightly disinfecting of all hightouch surfaces in buses with a hospital-grade disinfectant.

To support physical distancing between drivers and the public, in mid-March MTD voluntarily instituted rear door boarding and is not currently collecting fares. There is also a greatly reduced maximum occupancy limit on board the buses.

Mental Wellness Center launches virtual book club BEGA supports local businesses, gives to Clinical anxiety has increased 20 percent during the first months of the Covid-19 employees outbreak, according to Mental Health America, which tracks screening data to monitor impact. In partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Santa Barbara County, Mental Wellness Center (MWC), has launched a virtual book club.

Through May, the book club will focus on mental wellness through reading “Hidden Valley Road: Inside the Mind of an American Family,” by Robert Kolker. Participating in the MWC and NAMI book club is free. Participants receive a suggested weekly reading schedule through May, culminating in a live, virtual fireside chat with the author, Bob Kolker, at the end of the month. Obituary

David D. Donovan 7/10/1957 – 4/8/2020

David was born on July 10, 1957 to Jack and Norma Jean Donovan. He was raised in Carpinteria where he attended Carpinteria High School. After high school, David joined the U.S. Marines with his brother Kelly.

David worked alongside his father Jack as a roofer from a young age, later working with his Uncle Larry and Cousin Steve as an electrician.

David passed peacefully at his home in Lompoc, California, where he lived and was loved/cared for by his daughter Christine. He was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Norma Jean Donovan and brother Kelly Donovan. He is survived by his children: Nicole Donovan and granddaughter Naomii (Bullhead, Arizona); Christine Donovan (Lompoc); and Jack Donovan and fiancé Jennifer (Long Beach, California).

David’s oldest daughter found him after 40 years just a couple months before his passing, along with her husband and three children. He will be missed by his siblings Joy Wheatley (Roger), Robin Gonzales (David) and Julie Jimenez (Joey); his nieces and nephews; his Uncle Larry and Aunt Bonnie Donovan; his Aunt Roberta Germanetti and his many dear cousins.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to all who have offered their condolences to the family at this difficult time.

This month, Carpinteria-based architectural lighting company BEGA committed $15,000 in local purchases to support Carpinteria businesses and to give back to their employees. The company purchased hundreds of gift certificates from local restaurants and gave them to their employees to spend. Restaurants include employee favorites Uncle Chen, Jack’s Bistro & Famous Bagels, Peebee & Jay’s, Giovanni’s, The Food Liaison and Siam Elephant Thai. Additionally, BEGA partnered with Ocean Breeze flowers to distribute bouquets to employees.

Carpinteria start-up offers digital gift cards to support breweries and wineries

Community members concerned about the survival of their favorite small businesses amidst the coronavirus crisis can show their support, and offset lost revenue, by purchasing digital gift cards on the mobile app GYDO (Get Your Drink On).

GYDO is a gifting platform designed to digitize the age-old concept of buying a friend a drink. Drinks purchased on the GYDO app function like a digital gift certificate to a specific venue. Crushcakes Carpinteria closes permanently

After 10 years in business, Crushcakes owner Shannon M. Gaston has announced that the Carpinteria location will remain closed, permanently.

After closing the cafe because of Covid-19, Gaston said that she tried to work with her landlords regarding the rent but no agreement was reached. With the total loss of sales, Gaston stated that she had to make the “very difficult decision” to permanently close the Carpinteria store. Crushcakes Santa Barbara and Goleta will remain open.

Allow all Carpinterians beach parking

Why should people who live downtown be treated more favorably than other Carpinterians who lend equal yearlong support to the town? Choosing to live near the beach has obvious benefits and disadvantages, the latter being principally the crowds the beaches attract in-season. If the city wants to discourage out of town visitors from enjoying our beaches (and spending their money at local businesses) by imposing intentionally discriminatory parking restrictions, then at the very least all Carpinterians should be issued parking permits to avoid the two-hour limit.

Utilizing the Covid-19 crisis as justification to effectively restrict public beach access for some Carpinterians and not others is disingenuous, unfair and quite possibly unlawful. But, rather than go there, let’s simply recognize this for what it is: an excuse to confer parking and beach exclusivity to a preferred group of citizens who have long agitated for it. It has zero to do with social distancing and on its face, will have no impact on reducing the spread of infection. The citizens of Carpinteria should not countenance it.

Memorial Day at Carpinteria Cemetary

Every year the Carpinteria Public Cemetery District hosts a Memorial Day program to honor our fallen. This year, the program will be held on Monday, May 25, at 10 a.m. At this time, we are uncertain that we will be allowed to have our loyal residents attend because of the current Covid-19 situation. I have fielded many phone calls asking whether the Memorial Day program will be cancelled. It will not.

We are all making sacrifices in our daily routines to help not spread this terrible virus, but if you compare that to the ultimate sacrifice that these brave soldiers made, it pales in comparison. Therefore, we will be having a program—it might just be 10 of us in attendance—but we will have it. We will honor the fallen, some of which are at the Carpinteria Cemetery, others resting in places as far off as Belgium, Italy, France and the Philippines.

We will honor the great sacrifice these brave soldiers made, and we will take a moment to reflect just how lucky we all are, even in this unusual time.

Parking numbers at proposed inn

Regarding the letter to Coastal View News from the would-be railroad hotel developer (CVN, Vol. 26, No. 32) that referenced the advertisement submitted by the Downtown Beach Neighborhood Coalition (published in CVN, Vol. 26, No. 29)—I belong to this group and it is our responsibility to provide the facts behind our statement: “After the hotel construction and its required parking, Carpinterians are left with nine parking spaces in the City Beach Parking Lot.” There are 113 parking spaces in the lot.

According to the plans, the proposed hotel development would sit on top of 52 of these, leaving 61 spaces. The proposed hotel is required to have 40 parking places for guests (one per room), two for employees and 10 for cafe use (one per four seats). The total remaining parking places is nine. This inconvenient truth for the developer is factual.

It is deceitful to count required parking for the hotel as public parking. Such “conjunctive use” calculations are counting the same parking spots twice—once for the developer and once for the public.

It is underhanded to fail to disclose that the project is reliant upon the Community Garden giving up the eastern 60 feet of fenced area where the bee hives and various mulch piles are located, in order to create an additional 14 parking places.

And it is simply unprincipled to include paving our urban Open Space Corridor in hotel parking calculations.

We, the people of the city of Carpinteria, own both parcels of land—the Downtown Beach Parking Lot and the Open Space Corridor on the south side of the railroad tracks. This land is ours—it does not belong to the developer. An overwhelming preponderance of evidence shows that the vast majority of Carpinterians do not favor this hotel’s development. Only once before in the history of Carpinteria’s proposed projects has this kind of opposition been presented. Viewpoint It’s time to help our businesses recover

Covid-19 has been an unprecedented event and despite the difficulties we have all faced, through everyone’s efforts, our city has been fortunate to have little impact from Covid-19. The issues, however, are not gone and I ask you all to remain vigilant to ensure it doesn’t take hold, while we look to ease the current restrictions in place.

Our biggest issue to now deal with as a city is helping our business community recover.

At our last City Council meeting, I requested we organize an ad hoc committee to handle the communications, seek and distribute programs available for our businesses that will assist them in these tough times, implementing safeguards for public safety and protecting our citizens, and putting in place a plan for economic recovery. Because of the overwhelming support by our Council and the fact that we are only allowed to have two council members on an ad hoc committee, we decided to create two ad hoc committees—one for communications and current actions, and the second will be focused on economic recovery.

Santa Barbara County also recently created a Reopening Project Team of community leaders and elected officials from within the county who were tasked to creating guidelines for the reopening of the county. This fortunately overlapped with the ad hoc committee which includes Dave Durflinger as the lead, Al Clark as the co-chair, Michael Ensign for hotels, Jessica Clark for restaurants, Joe Cardenas for Hispanic restaurants, Greg Martin for the State Park, Lt. enforcement, Mike Lazaro for events, Msgr. Our goal is to reach 100 percent of our citizens, including the under-represented Hispanic community that plays such a large role in our community.

Good food: Carpinteria’s grassroots food safety net helps thousands impacted by Covid-19

carpinteria is currently experiencing a scale of food insecurity unmatched in recent memory. Before the covid-19 pandemic, the carpinteria children’s Project (ccP) served roughly 500 individuals at a monthly food distribution.

By March 2020, they were distributing food to over 1,500 people each week; and by last month, they were serving over 2,000 people each week—that’s 3,400 unique individuals in April—six and half times more people than just a handful of months prior.

“Frankly, i did the calculation and the tears started flowing,” said Maria chesley, executive director of ccP. “So many are scared—scared of getting sick and scared they will not be able to take care of themselves or their children even if they don’t get sick because they’ve lost their jobs.”

Before covid-19, once a month, ccP’s Promotores de Salud of carpinteria along with other volunteers, distributed groceries from Foodbank of Santa Barbara.

Need increased quickly once the March 19 stay-at-home order shut down businesses and left many unemployed or severely underemployed. in response, ccP, the United Boys and Girls clubs and carpinteria’s rotary clubs began organizing a weekly distribution of staple groceries from the Foodbank. Other businesses and organizations also began to provide additional items for distribution, such as books from Artesania para la Familia, flowers from Westerlay Orchids, salsa from Casa Hernandez, gift certificates to local restaurants from 93013 Fund and agricultural products from local farms.

They live with their three-year-old daughter, carrillo’s parents, her aunt and her sister-in-law. “The truth is it’s helped a lot,” she said, “we get the basics from the children’s Project food distribution, and that means we don’t have to go to the store to buy them.” Because of the weekly bags of groceries that they pick up at ccP, carrillo said, she’s not worried about her family going without food, though she does worry about being able to afford other expenses like rent and health care. in early April, carpinteria’s 93013 Fund—founded with seed money from

cArP Growers—began supplying ccP with 250 weekend food boxes packed with Farm cart Organics produce and other staples from local businesses like rice, beans and tortillas. every Friday, ccP distributes the boxes to its families with the most need.

Among the most vulnerable in carpinteria are its seniors. For seniors, in addition to possible economic losses, the recommended self-isolation protocol for seniors to reduce the risk of infection can make trips to the grocery store more challenging. Between March 13 and May 1, community Action commission of Santa Barbara county (cAc) saw a 44 percent increase in seniors participating in their meal programs. countywide the percent increase is 30 percent. in carpinteria, seniors can sign up to pick up a bag lunch on weekdays at the Veterans Hall or to receive home delivery service of prepared meals and groceries. last week, 263 carpinteria seniors received prepared meals from cAc. At the end of March, when increased demand became clear, the cAc received supplemental funding from the city of carpinteria for their senior nutrition program. eighty-nine-year-old doris laMarr lives by herself in carpinteria. She signed up to receive meals and groceries after covid-19 made eating out and shopping

more difficult, though she still visits supermarkets when needed. “Seniors need food and if there’s any extra we need it,” laMarr said, also noting that “whoever is fixing the meals is doing a great job.” With her son in San diego and her daughter “in Heaven,” receiving a box of groceries and pre-fixed meals has been a big help, and even fun, “you never know what’s going to be in it.”

“As this crisis continues, we anticipate a continued increase in seniors needing prepared meals,” said Patricia Keelean, ceO of cAc. “Nutrition is a vital part of maintaining a healthy immune system, and older people are most at risk for contracting covid-19 and becoming seriously ill.”

This month, carpinteria’s 93013 Fund started sending hot meals to seniors on Sunday nights. The first Sunday they delivered 75, and the second, on May 3, they delivered 200. The fund plans to continue weekend food boxes and Sunday senior dinners through May. By that time, the 93013 Fund estimates that between the weekend boxes, restaurant gift certificates and Sunday meals, they will have served 40,000 meals. “it’s pretty amazing how many carpinterians are being supported with food,” said Chesley. “Carpinterians really take care of each other.”

County’s ninth person dies from Covid-19

On May 5, Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (PHD) reported the ninth death of someone who tested positive for Covid-19. The individual who passed resided in the city of Santa Barbara in the unincorporated Mission Canyon area and was in their 40s with underlying health conditions. There are now 544 confirmed cases of Covid-19, of which 442 have fully recovered.

In the South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria, there are 24 confirmed cases and no deaths. Lompoc’s federal prison has 107 cases, including one death. Other cities showing steady rises include Santa Maria with 158 cases, including two deaths; the city of Lompoc with 85, including one death; and Santa Barbara with 67 cases and one death. Goleta has 11 confirmed cases and two deaths.

The county has now given 5,230 tests for Covid-19. Four were inconclusive and 4,682 were negative.

While most cases of Covid-19 exhibit mild or moderate symptoms, the county’s growing case numbers and first deaths from Covid-19 underscore the urgent need for all residents to take extra steps to protect those who are particularly vulnerable to developing more serious illness, including elderly persons and those with underlying health conditions such as diabetes, cancer, immunodeficiency and asthma.

Local funeral director serves the nation in New York City

Upon returning to Carpinteria from New York City after assisting with mortuary services as part of the federal Covid-19 response, having seen, literally, thousands of bodies, funeral director Dan Flynn told the Santa Barbara Independent that when he saw crowds packing the beach at Santa Claus Lane, he “‘wanted to stand up on a rock and yell, ‘What are you all thinking?’”

Flynn spoke with CVN recently to share additional insights from his trip East. “I anticipate being called back to New York,” he said. “They were having 1200 deaths a day, it’s now down to about 250 a day (but) there are still thousands of bodies in storage.” A member of the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for the past 14 years, Flynn described hundreds of re-purposed refrigerated trucks serving as temporary morgues because the city’s funeral homes and hospitals were overwhelmed with bodies. The local carpenters’ union built wooden shelving three- to four-shelves high in the trucks to store the dead.

He speaks with admiration for the morticians he worked with in New York, noting their meticulous record keeping and overall attention to detail.

“Those people in NYC were such pros,” he said, “I learned more in three days than I would have learned in six months anywhere else.”

While the numbers of Covid-19 infections in California are much lower than they were in New York, Flynn nevertheless sees the seriousness of the pandemic and commented, “I haven’t seen anything

in this town that resembles quarantine.”

And understandable as it may be to want to go to the beach in beautiful weather after nearly two-months of shelter-in-place orders, Flynn observed that “People act like the rules don’t apply to them—the virus doesn’t care where you’re from, or how much money you have.”

Flynn was careful to note that because he is not a doctor or epidemiologist he is not qualified to comment on the course the pandemic is likely to take. However, having seen firsthand the devastation that Covid-19 can bring, he urges community members to “keep wearing masks… and wash your hands.” In his opinion, people should not wear gloves, as these are intended for single use in a medical setting, and replaced after each interaction. Wearing gloves all day doing errands around town, Flynn said, likely spreads the virus. Instead, frequent hand washing “breaks the chain” of spreading the virus. Pointing to the successful twomonth quarantines in Wuhan, China, and across Italy, Flynn said people who go out unnecessarily “are putting your neighbors at risk.”

School board meets, public record currently unavailable

The April 28 online Zoom meeting of the Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees was unavailable as of press time due to technical difficulties.

However, CUSD Superintendent Diana Rigby provided CVN with the Superintendent’s Report, the budget report and the CMS online learning report that board members discussed at the meeting.

“The board also approved the Grading During School Closure Resolution and the Care Solace Services for families,” Rigby stated.

CUSD has selected Care Solace “to calm the chaos of mental healthcare coordination,” according to a district press release. Care Solace uses a web-based tool to help faculty, students and families determine when support is needed, and assists in coordinating community-based mental healthcare options.

Superintendent’s Report

Superintendent Rigby’s written report began with appreciations for Carpinteria community members, the 93013 Fund and Carpinteria Education Foundation for supporting local schools during the Covid-19 crisis. She also acknowledged National Teacher Week, May 4 to 8. “Our teachers deserve a standing ovation more than ever for their outstanding response to school closures,” the superintendent wrote. “(At) no time in history has the educational system undergone such dramatic changes and CUSD teachers responded with grit, hard work and creativity. Thank you CUSD teachers—we appreciate you!”

US News & World Report named Carpinteria High School a 2020 Best High School, the superintendent reported.

The California Department of Education approved funding through the Restart Program (established in response to the Thomas Fire) to provide salary premiums (bonuses) to all employees still in a permanent position as of March 2020,” Rigby announced in her report.

“We are waiting for funding timelines and will announce bonus amounts and an estimated payment date as more information is received.”

Citing education department guidelines for grading during school closures, Rigby announced that the board would consider a resolution later in the board meeting that would “hold students accountable for academic work while also ensuring that they aren’t penalized by lack of access to remote learning.” The board approved the resolution.

Rigby gave the result from the Dual Language Immersion/Carpinteria Family School lottery, held April 15. All Spanish-speaking and bilingual families were accommodated, but only six slots for English-speaking-only families were available due to a sibling policy, leaving 20 students on a waiting list. CFS selected eight students in the lottery, leaving five on a waiting list. Kindergarten enrollment is smaller than last year, the superintendent stated.

Regarding graduation/promotion ceremonies, Rigby wrote: “Principals are working with their staff and parent groups to develop virtual award and promotion ceremonies for K-8 during the last day of school, June 15. Principal Gerardo Cornejo is working with his staff and parent groups to design virtual and in-person awards and graduation ceremonies for June 11 and early August.”

Finally, Rigby provided a Measure U update. Phase three Measure U work at Canalino School is about 75 percent complete and on schedule for completion in early June. New classrooms furnishings will then be installed and classrooms should be ready by the end of June. Summer 2020 projects will get an early start due to the closure of the campuses through the end of the normal school year. Rigby stated that the following projects will begin May 15: Aliso classroom modernization, CHS classroom modernization, CHS gym modernization, and modernization for the old CHS administration building which will house the new CHS Student Center (formerly Rincon).

Phase two classroom modernization at Aliso and Phase two classroom modernization at CHS will be complete by the start of school, Aug. 24. Modernization of the CHS gymnasium and the old CHS administration building will continue into the school year. “As a result,” the superintendent noted, “interim housing will be provided to CHS administration staff in the temporary portables, and interim locker rooms will be created on campus in the former woodshop and also a portable classroom behind the gym.”

A revised Summerland project submission is being prepared for the county of Santa Barbara for approval of the Coastal Development permit.

Budget projections

Rigby also made Assistant Superintendent Maureen Fitzgerald’s 2020-21 budget presentation available to CVN. Projected property tax revenues were provided pre- and post Covid-19, with an anticipated loss of nearly 2 percent in the 2020-21 school year. The report stated a projected “unrestricted fund” reserve in the district budget of 4.73 percent in its 2020-21 budget assumptions.

On a page titled “The New (not) Normal,” Fitzgerald stated that unemployment rates are expected to reach over 30 to 40 percent, “resulting in: delayed property tax payments, slowed or stalled home sales and potential foreclosures.”

She added, “economic assumptions are changing daily, leaving many unknown factors in building revenue assumptions.”

CMS remote learning

Carpinteria Middle School distributed 364 laptops over three days and issued 35 internet “hotspots.” Staff wore masks and gloves, and tape-markers were laid down to guide social distancing.

A tracking chart was presented showing challenges faced by middle school students and counselor check ins, and a teachers’ concerns/comments section as well. Examples of online exercises were also provided. Online tutoring and social emotional supports were available to students with check-ins from contentarea teachers.

Planning is underway to hold virtual recognition and promotion ceremonies, and the superintendent praised CUSD teachers and students, who, she wrote, “deserve standing ovations for their reinvented learning experiences during this most significant disruption of education in modern times!” Carpinteria High School graduation will include banners, a community parade, and a virtual ceremony on June 11 with an in-person ceremony later in the summer.

“Currently, no decisions have been made to change the opening date of CUSD 20-21 school year with teachers returning on August 19 and students beginning on Monday, Aug. 24,” the Rigby stated. “However,” she added, “we are engaged in many discussions regarding how to safely open schools within the public health guidelines and we will keep you informed of the final plan.”

Care solace coordinates mental health services

Carpinteria Unified School District has selected Care Solace to support behavioral and mental healthcare referrals for its students, families and staff members. Care Solace’s care navigation system uses a database of behavioral and mental healthcare resources in California to find carefully vetted local therapists and programs in minutes. Families of CUSD will also have access to an around-the-clock bilingual care concierge team, where experts guide families through processes related to insurance, provider availability, wait times and scheduling.

“School is more than a place to learn, it’s a place where students come to feel embraced, included and supported,” said Dr. Karla Curry, director of Special Education at CUSD. “We chose Care Solace for their unique ability to further our commitment to finding solutions that strengthen the health and safety of our learning community.”

According to the district’s press release, last year, more than 80,000 school staff and parents used the prescreening tool in California, and at least 30,000 students received mental healthcare services. Care Solace estimates that it has facilitated 4,000 crisis-interventions. Care Solace is now available to CUSD families and staff. For more information, visit caresolace.com.

CMS sixth graders find their voices in poetry and travel (virtually) to Greece

Kevin O’Hara, sixth-grade teacher in Language Arts/Ancient Civilizations at Carpinteria Middle School, has given his students two poetry prompts this spring—a metaphor poem just before the switch to online instruction, and a tone poem using Sandra Cisneros’ “Abuela Who.” O’Hara noted that “many of these poems have universal appeal and are representative of the sixth-grade voice during this season.”

Additionally, students in O’Hara’s A Greek national stamp, circa Ancient Civilizations class are reading 1983, depicts a scene from “The “The Odyssey.” The sixth graders will Odyssey.” be taking a Zoom field trip to Corinth, Greece, to meet with an archaeologist there on Thursday, May 7. The Zoom field trip is a replacement for the field trip the class would have made to the Getty Villa Museum scheduled before the pandemic hit. Historical museum offers history online, asks for community support

David Griggs, director/curator of the Carpinteria Valley Museum of History, has announced an updated museum website, carpinteriahistoricalmuseum.org, with a new feature “History Articles,” that provides access to historical articles from past issues of the historical society’s newsletter “The Grapevine.”

“Each informative, history-packed story shares first-person accounts relating to Carpinteria’s interesting and unique cultural heritage,” Griggs reported, “covering many aspects of life and business in the beautiful and agriculturally rich coastal valley.”

With the need for social isolation and stay at home orders in effect, Griggs stated that the museum will remain closed until the safety of staff, volunteers and visitors can be assured. “The popular last-Saturday-of-the-month Museum Marketplace has also been suspended until further notice,” he added, “which means the cancellation of the annual Memorial Weekend Plant and Flower sale as well.”

Noting that “the museum is suffering the most profound loss of revenue in our history,” Griggs pointed out “We do not rely on any government support, and instead have remained self-sufficient through our membership support, fund-raising efforts and earnings on investment income.” He said the museum is currently “relying on our reserves…” and until “we can resume our programs and activities, we have almost no revenue stream to maintain our beautiful local museum. Becoming a member is the best way to support our work.”

Donations can be made online by visiting the museum website’s support page. “We at the historical society and museum miss our volunteers, visitors and marketplace participants, and look forward to seeing you all as soon as it is safe to do so.” Griggs wrote. “In the meantime, stay home, stay well, and learn about our history online!”

Aliso lions celebrate their teachers

To celebrate teacher appreciation week this year (May 4-8), Parents for Aliso have taken to their Facebook page, encouraging Aliso Elementary School students to upload videos, graphics and appreciative notes for their teachers.

“She is really nice and wants us to try our best in class,” wrote fifthgrader Alena Ballat to her teacher Ms. Metz.

“She always wants to make sure whether or not you understand what we’re learning.

Another thing about her is that she always finds DaSha, Second grade, Teacher: Mrs. Sibrian a way to make learning fun! I really appreciate having such a great fifth-grade teacher. I will always be proud to be an Aliso Lion!”

Vanessa Pulido wrote to Ms. Neely, her kindergarten teacher, “My teacher is special because she has been a great teacher since I came here from Mexico. She has taught me the ABCs and numbers. She is always on top of my learning and is very special to me.”

The fluffy, wise-eyed Forrest turned 15 this year. Adopted from the Humane Society 10 years ago by the Bailey family, Forrest survived being hit by a car but his tail did not. Dr. Smith had to amputate his tail after the accident.

Essential workers

the lay of the land mike wondolowski If you walk around the corner from Crushcakes Cafe and start down Yucca Lane toward the parking lot behind that building, you see a large mural on the wall that resembles an old-fashioned postcard showing the beach paradise and glamour that is the stereotype of California. It is a colorful image suggesting sun, fun, beauty, natural riches and carefree days.

But if you stop and look at the mural, you notice it has two areas where that image is “peeling away,” revealing something less colorful and less carefree underneath. Behind the shiny car, family beach scene, palm tree and bountiful harvest are glimpses of polluting industry, bumper-to-bumper traffic and hardworking stooped-over farm laborers. It is easy not to recognize the contributions of those who labor behind the scenes to support the stereotype of California, including our own small beach town we work hard to protect.

This reality has become painfully clear in the seven weeks since Governor Newsom issued the state-wide stay-at-home order in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Schools and many workplaces are closed leaving a multitude of people at

Only “essential workers” are still on the job.

We can buy groceries and pick up food to go thanks to the “essential workers” in grocery stores and food preparation businesses. Those places have items to sell us because of deliveries made by truck drivers. There is something to put in those trucks because there are food processing plants supplied by farm workers growing and harvesting the food.

We can keep updated on the latest news on TV, radio, or the Internet, or just binge on Netflix because the businesses necessary to make all that work are also “essential.”

Our refrigerators and lights work because electric utilities are essential. Water comes out of our taps and our toilets work because essential workers are on the job.

Almost anything else we want, we can order from Amazon or somewhere else online and have it delivered to us, making use of an entire supply chain from raw materials to factories to warehouses with transportation between each step.

And of course, if we need police, fire or medical help, we fully expect immediate response when we call 911.

For some of us, it can seem that we are on our own, providing for ourselves, making do with only what we have. We are on an island in our home reliant on nobody. Then we open the refrigerator, pull out some food from the grocery store, turn on the stove to cook it, and eat dinner in front of the TV watching a movie we always wanted to see.

But that perspective is difficult to maintain when we go to the grocery store with our masks on and speak to the checker through protective plexiglass. We are there for a few minutes then hurry back to shelter-at-home, while the cashier works her entire shift before returning home, worrying she might expose her family to any virus she may have picked up that day.

The California “postcard” mural has been in its current location since 2001

when it was created through a collaboration between a group of teen artists, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and a master artist. It is officially titled “A Climate for Health and Wealth,” a slogan included in the bottom right corner of the piece. Its installation was made possible through a partnership that included the Carpinteria Valley Arts Council (now the Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center).

The mural’s creators were referencing California’s history, as well as conditions that persist to the present day.

But perhaps the message has never been as poignant and clear as it has become today.

When the danger reduces and we slowly return to “normal,” will anything be different than before? Will we collectively treat “essential workers” any differently? Will teachers be paid the same?

Restaurant workers?

Truck drivers? Farm workers? Gardeners? House cleaners? Delivery drivers?

Or will we just paste back down the peeling parts of the mural so we can again ignore what is underneath?

Behind the shiny car, family beach scene, palm tree and bountiful harvest are glimpses of polluting industry, bumper-tobumper traffic and hard-working stooped-over farm laborers.

Graduation in an uncertain time

Jacob Mata played on the Warriors’ football team for each of his four years at CHS. He was selected for the All South County team, and also played golf and baseball, and participated in FFA and the FFA tractor restoration team.

For those who have long-since received their diplomas and degrees, it can be easy to forget the profound sense of accomplishment and the important milestone that the annual ceremony of graduation represents.

The families of Carpinteria High School’s Class of 2020 haven’t forgotten however, and custom signs are popping up in yards across town, with a number CHS seniors featured here. Another set of parents, former First Lady Michelle Obama and President Barack Obama will participate in a national graduation ceremony on YouTube, on June 6, for graduates from high school, university or “any other kind of school,” Mrs. Obama tweeted on May 5.

Daniel Grimes has “lots of good football memories,” from his years at ChS, as well as hard fought battles to remember in basketball and in track and field. He is also a member of FFA.

Myles Alfama shared that he “has loved his school experience at CUSD and misses his friends and the CHS staff.” He “can’t wait Carpinteria to go to Santa Barbara City College in the fall,” and wants his classmates to know “Warrior spirit never dies—peace to the Carpinteria class of 2020.”

IN THE NATUREHOOD NANCY BARON On Earth Day, I was talking to my neighbor Val from six feet away in her driveway, when a little gray fox trotted past. It was a beautiful creature—grizzled gray with cinnamon accents and a billowy black-tipped tail.

I followed, and found it peering into an avocado orchard where a worker below was blocking its way. It stared at me, deciding, then wheeled and disappeared through a hole in the fence into my neighbor Lon’s yard.

I have never before seen a gray fox, at least alive. My husband and I have a motion-activated camera in our avocado grove. We have seen a parade of wildlife come to the water bucket: coyotes, bobcats, opossums, skunks, raccoons, barn owls, great horned owls—but never a gray fox.

The gray fox is typically active at night, dawn and dusk. This was well before sunset. Was it out because it has pups and was on the hunt?

Four years ago, in June, we found a dead gray fox that was a nursing mother.

Neighbors gathered around her, heartsick that the pups were somewhere, waiting for her return. I sent photos to experts, who theorized the fox had likely eaten a poisoned rat. Rat poison not only kills rats, but also the natural predators that eat rats. It causes internal hemorrhaging—a terrible death.

I thought about those pups for a long time. Bill Leikam, a fox expert and co-

A gray fox takes one last curious look before diving into its den under a neighbor’s deck. founder of the Urban Wildlife Research Project told me, “There’s a bit of a bright side that many do not know. Gray foxes, both male and female raise their young together. So, in this case since she died, the male will then take over and try to raise his litter to adulthood. I can say from personal observations that there was a period of mourning both with the pups and the male of the family, but the male would do his best to carry on.”

The pups or kits are generally born in April. They mature fast. By early November, they are ready to strike out on their own. Once a fox finds a mate, they usually pair for life.

Gray foxes are anciently related to dogs, coyotes, wolves and jackals. While

they look like a dog, they behave in some ways like a cat. Gray foxes have retractable claws that enable them to clamber up trees where they lie in wait to ambush rats, mice, lizards and insects. Leikam recalled watching one parent teaching his pups to climb. “I was by a stand of eucalyptus trees. I saw a male fox with four pups about six months old. The parent demonstrated leaping and clawing up the tree. The four young ones made mad dashes, scrambling, climbing and chasing each other.”

Their short legs are an advantage for traveling through thick scrublands. UC Santa Barbara-based researcher Kevin Lafferty shared camera trap photos taken at night off Paradise Road, where gray

foxes are more common.

The gray fox was the ancestor to the island foxes of Channel Islands fame.

One theory is that the Chumash brought the foxes over from the mainland as pets.

“They are calm and so darn cute,” Lafferty said. “You can see it happening.”

Island foxes trace their origins to at least three females from the mainland, according to research by Ben Sacks of UC Davis. The island foxes date back over 10,000 years and have been well studied.

But mainland gray foxes have not. “It remains a mysterious animal from the research point of view,” Sacks said.

Fortunately, the gray fox is somewhat adaptable, given the need for wildlife to adjust to urban encroachment. But they are rarely seen.

I wondered if my neighbor had ever seen the fox that disappeared into his yard. “Yes, there are two of them,” Lon told me. “They are living under our deck, although recently we have only seen one.” This made me a little anxious.

I knew in the past he had used poison to protect his vineyard from rats. He invited me over to see the fox hole the animals were using to get under his deck.

I could see why the foxes like Lon’s lush, bushy landscape. It was beautiful and offered lots of cover. Yet I couldn’t help but notice old rat poison stations that languished among the grape vines.

So, I asked.

“Oh, I don’t use rat poison anymore,” Lon said. “I don’t need to. The foxes take care of the rats. And I like the foxes. I like watching them.” His wife Dori agreed, “All the excitement helps to make the days go by. We are truly thankful for our furry friends that have decided to make our house their home.”

The Carpinteria High School boys tennis team saw an impressive streak come to an end due to Covid-19. The Warriors had won and/or shared the last three league titles, spanning two leagues, collected two Frontier League championships and then won the inaugural Citrus Coast League championship last year.

“They stopped us really suddenly, they just sent an email, everything stopped, and Charles (Bryant)” locked the fence so we couldn’t get in (to the tennis courts),” recalled Carpinteria senior Esteban Zapata of the Warrior coach’s swift response to the pandemic.

“We held out hope that we would be able to play and be back at school, but with each passing day it looked less and less likely,” said coach Bryant. “But as soon as the governor said the schools were closed for the remainder of the year, then, that was the end.”

For Zapata, who played tennis at the school for four years, and fellow seniors Ian McCurry and Corbin Pampel, the closure signaled the end of their high school careers. The road to a fourth consecutive title was not going to be an easy one for Carpinteria, as they graduated 10 players from last year’s squad that had gone all the way to the CIFSouthern Section quarterfinal round in the playoffs.

To make matters more difficult, the Warriors had a challenging non-league schedule, dropping matches to Simi Valley, Santa Barbara, Dos Pueblos, Thacher and Foothill Tech early in the season. The first four losses also happened to be one-sided.

“Foothill Tech, however, was the match that really opened my eyes and made me re-evaluate where we were currently and where we needed to be,” explained Bryant who’s also the school’s assistant athletic director. The Warriors beat Pacifica in a nonleague match and then beat Malibu and Hueneme in Citrus Coast League matches to start 2-0 in league.

“We were set to play a crucial league match with Nordhoff when the (pandemic) news broke,” said Bryant. “Nordhoff would have been our toughest league competition and it would have been a close contest, but with our growing confidence and stepped-up play, I think we would have won that battle,” said Bryant.

Team captains, McCurry and Zapata led the charge in doubles for the Warriors this season.

Meanwhile, Austin Stone, who was a standout as a freshman last year, continued to excel in singles.

Stone finished 16-0 in the abbreviated season. The future looks bright for the Warriors, as they will lose only three players to graduation. “As for next season, we will definitely miss Ian and Esteban, that is a doubles team that will be hard to find a replacement for, not just in wins but in leadership and attitude,” said Bryant.

Although the season ended in a flash for Zapata, the senior looked back at his tennis career with gratitude. “Overall, the past four years and the experience were pretty fun and exciting,” said Zapata, who plans to attend SBCC this year. “Winning three league title championships was something I never thought I would do.”

Cate athletes honored at SBART virtual awards

Cate School athletes were recently honored online at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table, as the organization decided to release this year’s award winners in a daily program at noontime which began April 15 and will continue past the middle of May. Rams sophomore Anna Di Sorbo was named Athlete of Year for girls cross country.

She finished first at the Lake Casitas Twilight Invitational in Ojai. She then won the Hoka One-One Two-mile Postal held annually in Carpinteria. In October, DiSorbo finished third at the 72nd Mt. SAC Annual Cross Country Invitational.

The Cate School girls duo of Carol Cai and Grace Fuss were also recognized at SBART for their outstanding play in girls tennis, being named co-tennis Players of the Year. The two co-captains led the Rams to a 10-0 regular season record. They also led Cate to four straight CIF Southern Section playoff appearances.

Cate School soccer star Buba Fofanah will continue his career as a Pilot at Portland University. The striker led the Rams to an undefeated regular season and a Tri-Valley League championship in 2019-20. He was named the league’s Offensive MVP and was selected to the All-CIF-Southern Section first team.

“He’s such a sweet, sweet guy,” said Cate coach Pete Mack. “And in a system like Portland’s, that counterattacks with pace, Buba will wreak havoc on opposing defenses, even at the high level Portland plays.”

Last season as a junior, Fofanah was named to the Allstate All-American Soccer team. Originally from Kenema, Sierra Leone, he’s one in a string of former Cate soccer players who have gone on to play Division-one soccer. Two of those distinguished alumni, Josh Yaro and Ema Boateng, have gone on to play at the professional level.

Boateng who played locally at UCSB, is in the MLS, now with DC United after four seasons with the L.A. Galaxy. Yaro who starred at Georgetown, is currently a member of San Antonio FC of the United Soccer League’s Championship Division.

“We’ve had several Cate players go on to professional soccer careers, and it won’t surprise me to see the same for Buba,” said Mack. “He’s truly driven to excel, and he has the physical attributes to play at the next level.”

City of Carpinteria Part 1 crimes recap according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff reports crime down 27 percent in Carpinteria CVN REPORT

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office has released the 2019 crime statistics for Carpinteria and other communities served by their office. Across communities served in Santa Barbara County, the violent crime rate declined by 6.4 percent year-over-year and 28 percent in the 10year average. Due to a 2.8 percent increase in property crimes, the overall crime rate countywide was 1.6 percent higher than in 2018 but was still 15 percent lower than the 10-year average.

Carpinteria experienced an overall decline of 27 percent, with a 48 percent decline in violent crime and a 25 percent decline in property crime.

Sheriff Brown credits the continuing stability of the long-term declines in crime rates to the collaborative efforts between communities and throughout the criminal justice system in Santa Barbara County, and as a result of the ongoing work and dedication of the Sheriff’s Office team.

According to Sheriff Brown, “Within Santa Barbara County, our law enforcement, prosecutors, public defenders and the courts are all working together to improve public safety within our communities.” Sheriff Brown further stated, “We are continuing our work to reduce criminal recidivism by offering important rehabilitative programming to inmates in our jail. Our efforts are also greatly enhanced through collaboration with other county departments and many community-based organizations.

Together we are working to enhance the safety and wellbeing of Santa Barbara County.”

The Sheriff’s Office compiles information about crimes occurring within the communities we serve and submits this information for inclusion within the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Uniform Crime Reports system (UCR). For the purposes of the UCR system, reports are broken down into two major categories: Part 1 crimes, which are the most serious in nature, and Part 2 crimes, which include lesser criminal offenses and some juvenile status offenses. Part 1 crimes are

further broken down into two subcategories: violent crimes and property crimes.

Part 1 violent crimes are offenses that involve force or a threat of force and include criminal homicide, forcible rape, robbery and aggravated assault. Part 1 property crimes are theft-related offenses that do not involve threats or force against the victim, including burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft.

When compared with the previous year, 2018, countywide, Part 1 violent crime was down by 6.4 percent, with the most significant reductions occurring in rape (50 percent drop). Overall, Part 1 property crime was 1.6 percent higher, with the most statistically relevant increases occurring in theft (4.8 percent increase).

Countywide on an overall basis, Part 2 crimes were down very slightly, .3 percent over the previous year. However, detailed analysis showed that some individual Part 2 crimes increased and some declined. My mom is my role model . . . by Carter Cox As my mom would say, “It’s a Fantabulous Friday!” When people see her Facebook and Instagram posts, they’re inspired to have a brighter day. My mother is bursting with joy and love for others. Beth Cox, my mother, is my role model in all areas of my life.

My mom always gives back to the community. Every year, she helps organize Relay Recess at my old elementary school, because one of the people who worked at the school died from cancer. Her dad, Roger Green, died from skin cancer in 2007. Once she started to help with Relay for Life, she saw how amazing it was to donate and help people in need. She spend a lot of her time helping, and soon she was raising $60,000 a year for cancer.

In 2019, my uncle, Jolly, died from cancer, which made my mom even more dedicated to the fight against cancer. About seven years ago, a trail was made in Carpinteria that is now called Franklin Trail.

Once my mom started to walk along that trail, she noticed how amazing it was, she created the Turkey Trot to raise money to make the trail better. During the Thomas Fire, my mom designed a 24 by 18-foot heart on the top of the trail that she lit up during the night.

She created a HOPE sign for Relay for Life, which told people there was still hope.

My mom pushes me to do my best in sports like golf, track, water polo and swimming.

Since I was 6, my mom and I have run the 10K in the Orchard to Ocean run. When I want to give up on a sport, my mom tells me, “One more year for one more year.” Some people say it’s weird how hard she pushes me, but I know that she knows that I love it. I just sometimes get bored. I started giving out food to people who can’t afford it. I have a really good time helping. I love to meet new people and make sure that they will have food. Who inspired me to go and do that? My mom Beth Cox! My mom loves to take pictures of the most exotic things. Each day she takes a photo and gives it a special caption, like “Marvelous Monday” or “Fantabulous Friday.” She has inspired one of my good friends, Max, to take photos. He has become a very good photographer and loves to take pictures, just like my mom.

My mom is my role model because she inspires me and so many people in my community.

She donates time and money and helps people in need. She pushes me to be my best and provides for me.

Covid Spring Hand Sanitizer Recipe

Making your own hand sanitizer is easy to do and only requires a few ingredients:

FLY BY F R A N D AV I S Every day when I get up I put on earrings. Not because I’m going anywhere or seeing anybody but because the little silver hoops remind me that once I did go places and see people and may again.

Call them my hope amulets.

My husband Roger and I are in the demographic with underlying conditions that make it especially risky for us to go to public places for shopping or other errands. We are in self-imposed lockdown in our Goleta condo, paying others to do our food shopping.

Building a bunker to shelter in place during treacherous times is something we humans have always done. Digging a foxhole as shells fly overhead. This time the shells are viral, but almost as deadly to many of us.

Murderous plagues have always swept the world periodically. The Bubonic plague raged through Europe, Asia and Africa in the sixth and fourth centuries.

Called the Black Death, it was spread by flea bites and killed half the population of Europe.

FYI, the Bubonic plague lives on, mainly in squirrels and other rodents in the Sierra and foothills. It’s a bacterial infection, now treatable with antibiotics.

The first modern pandemic, also called the Spanish Flu, occurred in the early 20th century. It was a virus, H1N1, and by 1919 had infected one-third of the world’s population, killing more 50 million people. People did what we do now. They barred their doors against the horror, hunkering down.

I read an account in the LA Times describing how the cities of Los Angeles and San Francisco responded to the Spanish Flu. In San Francisco, people wore masks and carried on pretty much as usual. In LA, they instituted a quarantine. Both cities reopened businesses too soon, and both experienced second waves of infection.

I hope we’ve learned something from past experience. Unfortunately, policies, practices and advice have been kind of willy-nilly, so many of us don’t know quite what to do beyond staying put and doing a lot of hand washing.

It still dismays me that people are hoard-

Unable to get any hand sanitizer, I resorted to making my own. The internet recipe called for aloe vera, which, of course was unavailable because everyone else was also making their own sanitizer.

I went outside and harvested some wands of aloe vera (lots of it growing around here) and milked them for their sticky juice. Peeling back the skin and scraping the liquid, along with some jell, was labor intensive, but I got enough to make a small bottle of sanitizer. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

We walk our two dogs every day because we and the hounds need it. Spring is in full breakout, blossoms and sweet smells everywhere, people and kids walking, riding bikes and scooters.

Everybody waves, calling out wishes for a good day—small and hopeful connections. Yards feature smile-inducing projects. A little sheep statue wearing a mask beside a sign that says “virtual hugs.” The other day a sidewalk blooming with colorful chalk drawings—flowers, stars, suns—and by a bucket of chalks a sign asking others to draw a picture.

I’m not a very good artist, so I just wrote “Wish, Play, Dream.”

Every day Roger and I give each other a long hug. We’re working on releasing oxytocin, which has been called the “cuddle hormone.” We hold each other tight, soaking in the feeling of safety love and hope. I recommend it.

Kits 4 Kids: Girls Inc. sends enrichment home to girls, launches fundraiser

As part of the May 5 internet event, #GivingTuesdayNow, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria has launched a fundraising campaign to help continue to provide lifechanging programming for local girls. The organization is seeking support in three areas: to provide scholarships for program participants; to help cover operating expenses; and to bring enriching, STEM-related experiences to local girls’ homes amid school and afterschool program closures.

As part of its Kits 4 Kids campaign, Girls Inc. is collaborating with the Carpinteria Unified School District to provide girls at home with educational kits that feature hands-on learning activities.

Parking restrictions tighten in Beach, Concha Loma and Downtown neighborhoods

Beginning Friday, May 8, the city of Carpinteria will implement temporary timed-parking limits and a new residential permit program for the Beach and Concha Loma neighborhoods. The move is an attempt to foil growing crowds at the beach, according to City Manager David Durflinger.

“We want people to be able to enjoy the beach and to keep beaches open,” said Durflinger, “but in order to do that we feel that additional parking restrictions are warranted to mitigate the amount of people at the beach.” With greater turnover in parking, the city hopes there will be greater turnover of people using the beach throughout the day—lessening peak times for congestion that make social distancing difficult. “Using the beach two hours allows people to enjoy the beach without overcrowding,” Durflinger said.

From 6 a.m. on Friday to 6 a.m. on Monday, portions of the Beach and Concha Loma neighborhoods will have two-hour time limits on parking. Residents impacted by the restrictions will receive by mail two parking permits per household exempting their vehicles from the restriction. Residents with a unique need for more than two, can request additional permits from the city. “We want to be flexible with residents who are being impacted by the extraordinary amount of visitors this time of year,” said Durflinger.

Additionally, the city will implement “no parking” areas on some portions of downtown streets that are heavily used for beach access, including Linden, Palm and Walnut avenues and 5th and 6th streets.

These areas were targeted for heavy beach use and low residential use, according to Durflinger, who also stated that the “no parking” measure was selected instead of timed parking to limit the city’s need to expend resources ticketing and towing in these areas.

“We appreciate that there is both anticipation and uncertainty around the state and region’s planning for loosening Covid-19 restrictions,” stated Durflinger. “It is critical that the good work Carpinterians have done to minimize the spread of Covid-19 continues

in order to avoid a resurgence of the virus and a prolonging of social distancing measures.”

The parking restrictions are expected to continue every weekend until issues of beach crowding subside; however, the policy is still being tested to see if it makes a positive difference or needs adjustments. On Monday, May 11, Carpinteria City Council will decide on ratifying the ordinance.

After birth, moms nose their pups’ head and neck, repeatedly tapping noses. It’s believed this is essential to the mother-pup bond. Pups are active immediately, moving both onshore and into the water for short periods. Mothers lead the pups, making frequent nose contact, and the pups have a well-developed following response. Pups have a distinctive distress call, which sounds very like “Maa.” Moms recognize their pups by sound and smell. Pups nurse for four to five weeks on milk that is about 50 percent fat, doubling their weight before weaning.

Disturbances Last weekend, two people deliberately ignored the city’s ordinance and Sealwatch volunteers by entering the seal sanctuary. They were reported to the city’s Code Enforcement department.

Sealwatchers have the impression that there has been a recent increase in violations of the city closure ordinance—which also means violations of the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act that comes with severe penalties. A number of footprints have been seen in early mornings, and beach walkers met at least three deliberate trespassers—people who were informed and still went past the watchers and through the sanctuary. Photos were obtained of some violators, and watchers usually call Code Enforcement for deliberate misconduct.

Beach days continue

Just as many out-of-town families come to Carpinteria to enjoy the seaside vibes once the weather warms up, juvenile great white sharks (and the occasional grown-up one too) also come to town. Like a lot of teens, the sharks may wish they could make that final 400-yard leap to Island Brewing Company for a pint of Island Pale Ale (the preferred beverage of great white sharks), but they must content themselves with a buffet of stingrays and the fun of scaring the humans.

Sun lovers practice responsible beach going on Saturday, May 2, by maintaining social distance between groups. While the beaches have been seeing a lot of traffic in the recent warm weather, city officials expressed cautious praise for most individuals who maintained their distance. Code enforcement will remind people to keep their distance, and for the time being beaches remain open unless crowds become too dense.
