Brad Stein For 28 years I have worked hard to keep Carpinteria a great place to live and raise a family.

Carla and I raised our three sons here. All three went to Carpinteria schools, participated in team sports and were Junior Lifeguards. I know how important it is to have such programs available to our youth, to have high quality playing fields and parks and a clean, safe beach. I know how important it is to support youth-oriented programs, our library and the Arts Center. I know how important it is to have safe routes for our kids to get to school and to have safe and enriching environments and after school programs like those at Boys & Girls Club and Girls Inc.

If re-elected, I will continue to put a high priority on all such programs for our kids, and I will continue working hard to keep Carpinteria a great place to raise a family.

Steinbeck’s legacy goes on trial

On Thursday, Oct. 25, at noon, Matthew Berger will present at the Rotary Club of Carpinteria on his experiences as the Lead Trial Attorney in the long-running disputes between the daughter of John Steinbeck’s widow and John Steinbeck’s son. The resulting lawsuit ended up with an award for over $13 million for breach of contract, slander of title and intentional interference with prospective economic advantage arising out of the question of who had the right to control the exploitation of the works of John Steinbeck. John Steinbeck is the Nobel Prize winning American author.

Seniors are suffering

I know that many seniors face a similar situation with their health care bills, especially the ones who are single. Those of us on Social Security have not had a decent COLA (cost of living adjustment) in seven years. I received an $11 COLA per month this January, and my rent was raised $11 per month. The previous two years my rent was raised $70 a month, with no COLA increase, and it came out of my food and miscellaneous budget.

I cannot afford GAP insurance to pay for the 20 percent Medicare does not cover. As a consequence, I have used and maxed out my credit cards to pay for medical expenses and necessities such as food, shampoo, etc. I just learned that as of 2019, I will no longer qualify for Extra Help, which provided me a decrease in my medications.

Congress seems to forget why we elected them—to help their constituents.

Don’t they have parents? They need to stop practicing slow genocide on seniors in this time of financial squeeze, rising costs of everything and those of us on a fixed income. We paid into Social Security, believing it would be there in the form of an annual COLA. This has not happened.

We need to combine the Consumer Price Index with the Senior Consumer Price Index to be fair. We all eat the same food, use paper goods, gas, etc.

Being old and poor and treated as though we don’t need the same as other people is another form of elder abuse.

Our society has a moral obligation to see that our vast wealth is fairly distributed so that no one suffers or dies because they can’t afford medicine or proper health care. A nation’s priorities should be its citizens.

To our elected officials: please help Californians get decent and fair health care, instead of sacrificing 40 percent of their income for health care. Half of seniors are filing bankruptcy, and losing their homes because of inflated health care.

Rent raises are causing more seniors to become homeless. Is this what we want?

Loopholes in rent stabilization ordinance

In 1992, a local mobile home park sued the City of Carpinteria because the city had passed a Mobile Home Stabilization Ordinance to preserve affordable rents.

The park claimed that the ordinance unconstitutionally “prevents them from raising rents to market levels upon the sale or transfer of a unit.” The park lost the lawsuit, but the ordinance was riddled with so many ambiguities that some

mobile home park owners and managers cleverly managed to exploit these “loopholes” to allow them to charge substantially more rent in spite of the ordinance.

It works like this: when you purchase a mobile home and if you are not aware of the City’s ordinance, you are told by the park manager that the only option you have is to sign a five-year lease. This is not true. You do not have to sign the lease, but you can insist on a month-to-month agreement. The difference could be a monthly savings of over $450.

Despite having a rent control ordinance, we are subject to unprincipled realtors and park managers. Realtors who sell mobile homes in our community have a fiduciary responsibility to inform new buyers of all the options, and should be held accountable if they do not. Park managers should, by the ordinance, explain all choices clearly. This morally wrong practice has been going on too long and needs to be stopped and exposed for all to see. What makes this especially shameful is that it is happening with the full knowledge of a constrained City Council and officials whose hands are tied because of their fear of another costly lawsuit by the park owners. It is just plain wrong for this to go on and it is time to put a stop to this unfair practice and plug the “loopholes.”

Let’s build an auditorium for our high school

I am a member of the Carpinteria Unified School District Citizens Advisory Committee regarding the sale of the District’s Bailard and Whitney properties. I am reporting on the Committee’s deliberations but this is my letter, not the committee’s, although the superintendent and the Committee know I am going to publish it and encouraged me to do so.

Our committee met several times with District staff and counsel. We received a thorough history for both properties and new current appraisals. After careful consideration, our committee voted unani-

mously to recommend to continue to designate both properties as surplus and to sell them because they are not needed for the purpose that they were acquired.

We do not need any more school sites.

Ten years ago, we closed Main because of declining enrollment.

A similar committee made the same recommendation to sell Bailard and Whitney over 11 years ago. Nothing happened. We do not have a record available to explain why not. Whitney and Bailard have been appraised at $5 million and $4 million respectively. That is revenue that our school district dearly needs for our outstanding facilities’ needs, as identified in the District’s Facilities Master Plan.

We know from the Facilities Master Plan that we have any number of identified facilities’ needs that are not currently funded. One of those is an auditorium for our high school so that we will no longer be the only large high school on the South Coast that does not have one. Committee members discussed all the wonderful activities that a new auditorium could support. Theatre, music, related career opportunities in music, set design, acting and everything related to presenting theatre and music in a proper setting.

A new auditorium at the high school would also be a community asset that could be used by other Carpinteria schools and appropriate community groups. We need to sell these properties promptly, and put that revenue to work for our children. Please contact our board members and let them know what you think. This will be on the board meeting agenda on Nov. 27.

Change the world, vote

The state of our nation worries me, and I want to do something personally to help get us back on an even keel. So, I am sending this letter to the editor and to you, not to ask you to get involved in social media or to contribute money, but rather to ask you to vote in the upcoming elections and to encourage your contacts to do the same. If all of us had voted last November, I don’t think I would be writing you this letter.

Among all of the world’s democracies, America has the lowest voter turnout; fewer than one out of every two eligible voters actually voted in recent elections.

And the population segment with the lowest turnout was the 18 to 29 year olds—often called the “young people.”

Only one in six young people voted in the last midterm elections. If two in six had voted, the results would have been different.

I ask you to encourage all of your contacts, but particularly the young people in your address book, to register and to vote.

Please ask your contacts to encourage their contacts to do the same. If each of us carried out this approach, together we could reach all of the voters in America.

Registering and voting have become easy. The website www.usa.gov can help us vote without leaving home. We can register and vote both online and by mail.

If enough of us vote, particularly young people, we can literally change the world.

The math on challenging the slate

Before I start, I am not telling anyone who to vote for in the upcoming election.

However, the three incumbent candidates have endorsed each other, creating a monolithic slate. If you are voting for these candidates there is no issue, vote the slate, one vote for each of the three candidates. Because of the nature of slate voting your candidates will most likely win.

However, if you want to vote for one or both of the challengers, you should only use one or two of your votes. Vote for the challengers of your choice, and do not use your third vote. Using your third vote to vote for any of the incumbents is a vote against the challenger insuring the

Ask the Candidates Carpinteria City Council

Question: The City of Carpinteria must constantly tackle financial needs for public services such as the Sheriff’s Dept., City employee pension plans and the Carpinteria Library.* What specific measures do you think the City needs to take to secure economic stability and sustainability in Carpinteria? In this year’s election, Carpinterians will vote-in three councilmembers from among the five candidates competing for the seats. Incumbents Gregg Carty, Al Clark and Brad Stein seek to retain their seats. Newcomers Roy Lee and Dar Ringling have thrown their hats into the ring. As a small business owner and member of the Carpinteria community, I am in favor of Measure X, the proposed sales tax increase. While passage of Measure X will secure economic stability and sustainability in Carpinteria, I do not consider it a long-term solution. The proposed sales tax might hurt some businesses in the short-term, but the revenue is needed to enable the local leadership’s obligation to maintain our roads and parks and keep up library and law enforcement services to ensure our community’s future success.

Passage of Measure X also gives Carpinteria time to pursue other streams of revenue, such as the growing cannabis industry. The City of Carpinteria is presently revising its moratorium on commercial cannabis to potentially allow for the testing of, processing and manufacturing on cannabis products. Community viewpoints on the use of revenue from the cannabis industry are vital to the city leadership’s ultimate decision. There are also lessons to learn from other local communities that are steps ahead. Objective information about the cannabis industry’s projected and actual impact on a community is needed to inform Carpinteria community members.

With the sales tax approved, the city leadership can take a hard look at its budget, its revenue streams, how funds are being spent, and any nonessential expenditures that must be cut. Passing Measure X in the short-term, while other sources of revenue are secured, will enable Carpinteria to continue moving forward.

Once the budget has been amended, the Measure can be repealed.

* CorreCtion: In last week’s paper, this question included the Carpinteria Summerland Fire Protection District. In fact, City Council does not determine the funds given to the Fire District.

Managing our City’s budget is an important role of our City Council. In order to prepare for serving our city, I went to City Hall and spent time with staff going over the city finances.

After a review of the financials, I believe we can support our public services with the funding we have. We do not need to put an undue burden on our citizens, tourists and businesses by raising our sales tax to 9 percent.

If we choose to raise our sales tax to 9 percent (which is higher than Santa Barbara and 70 percent of the other cities in California), it will cost all of us more to live here. Sadly, it will hurt the lower income segment of our population the most as they will be paying a larger percent of their income (proportionately) in taxes. Just think, even gas would go up by 5 cents a gallon. We also risk losing business to nearby cities, thereby hurting our own local businesses. I’m not willing to do that as our local businesses are part of what makes Carpinteria great.

If elected, I would work hard with staff and council members to figure out a way to work within our budget.

I would focus on increasing efficiencies and eliminating what we can without sacrificing our public services.

Safety will continue to be my first priority. If we all make an effort to shop and dine locally, we can increase the City’s revenue. I do not believe the answer to our financial woes is to raise taxes, but rather, figure out a way to live within our means and manage our budget even more effectively.

The cannabis growers are outside of the city limits; however, they do affect our city. They use our roads and unfortunately, they bring crime (at least one of the growers has been robbed multiple times—just yards from the city limit). This means our charming beach town will now need to be more vigilant to protect our community by increasing security. Our roads, which are used by the growers, will require more maintenance.

I believe we need to work closely with the County to substantiate the fact that their permission for cannabis growth, across the street from our homes and schools is negatively impacting our community. The County, who is benefitting from this operation, should share in the financial burden their decision has created.

Dissent and progress in CUSD school board meeting

At the Carpinteria Unified School District Board of Trustees meeting Oct. 9, board members heard from Superintendent Diana Rigby about statewide test results, CUSD property holdings and Measure U funding. Members also witnessed the swearing-in of student representative Marissa Marta, heard a presentation from the Carpinteria Children’s Project and got an update from the District’s transportation department.

Statewide testing

Superintendent Rigby presented disappointing results for Carpinteria High School on statewide testing, and said that the District was re-focusing its efforts with ongoing professional development for teachers and new language arts and math programs at the high school level.

Test scores were lower across the entire state, although no reason for the lower scores was given. In Carpinteria, 16 days of school were cancelled last year due to the Thomas Fire and Jan. 9 debris flow emergencies.

Disagreement among school board

members arose later in the meeting over the issue of this year’s low test scores and the efficacy of the current system for evaluating the superintendent’s performance. Citing the California School Board Association’s mandate that school boards and district superintendents work collaboratively, Maureen Foley Claffey stated, “Twice I asked Ms. Rigby, ‘how would you like us to collaborate?’… I was not followed up with, and I cannot support this process.”

“Are there concrete, specific suggestions you’d like us to consider?” School board President Michelle Robertson asked Foley Claffey.

Foley Claffey replied that the level of disagreement on the schoolboard made presenting an alternate view pointless, and said “I want to apologize to anyone watching tonight. I feel embarrassed about the behavior of this board, and the way we are not functioning well together.”

ing, he added, “I participated in 16 days of hard bargaining with the Union. On Sept. 26, there was a meeting and I wasn’t there. That’s a question I have—why not? I am on the committee, I was just put aside.”

It’s an uncomfortable situation to do so in public, but I want to say Michelle (Robertson) I’m grateful for your leadership.”

In 1990, a newly elected city council majority (of which I was a part) inherited a $350,000 deficit and was told the only way to solve it was by developing the Bluffs and forming a redevelopment agency for the downtown and beach area. We knew better. Some of the policies we introduced at that time were: Contract City of Carpinteria Police with Santa Barbara County Sheriffs, saving the community $500,000 the first year alone while getting full service for the first time in many years.

Stop subsidies and require new development to pay its own way so that existing residents would not have their taxes raised to pay for increased services and added infrastructure brought on by new development.

Develop sustainable City employee pension and health plans.

Revitalize the downtown and beach area without going into debt by using grant monies and local gas tax (aka Measure D) funds.

However, being a member of the City’s Budget Subcommittee for the past eight years has been extremely challenging. The City has a number of special districts whose tax rates have never been raised. So, even with all our cost cutting measures, every year approximately $374,000 of our budget is subsidized by our General Fund. Moreover, we have reached a critical crossroads owing largely to the fact that the City cannot control what other agencies do.

Our library is one example. As part of the County of Santa Barbara library system, County funding cuts fall on the City to make up the difference or risk having our library closed. Law enforcement costs keep rising, and cutting services is not an option. Our older roadways cost more to maintain. These are just some of the reasons our City Council voted unanimously to put the 1.25 percent sales tax increase on the ballot. Not only will the City keep all funds raised by this, as a sales tax it also means visitors to Carpinteria will pay half of this increase.

As far as the cannabis industry benefitting our local economy, remember it is all grown and collected outside the city limit so the only integration is if we want to allow store fronts to sell cannabis in the City of Carpinteria (which I oppose) in the interest of generating sales tax.

I see the passage of Measure X as a community response to our town’s needs. It is a fair and effective way to help support our quality of life.

Right now, I am keeping an open mind about the cannabis industry. Cannabis has proved useful for medical purposes. Most of it is grown on County land. I’m still weighing the pros and cons on this issue.

However, as the population rises and housing prices increase, the City faces profound questions regarding commercial and residential development. First, what is your position on the development of more residential units? Please specifically address affordable, low- and middle-income housing. Please specifically address the development of a boutique hotel in the Amtrak station parking lot on Linden Avenue, and a general position on the development of the Carpinteria Bluffs.

Carpinteria has a 28-year history of sound fiscal management.

We have kept Carpinteria small and vibrant, without resorting to Big Box Stores, housing sprawl, or oil & gas development. This approach maintained our small beach town quality of life, protected small businesses, and also enabled us to build up reserves to meet unexpected needs.

Carpinteria’s City Council planned ahead and did not fall into the pension giveaway trap that is now plaguing other cities (leading some into bankruptcy).

All cities face increased pension costs related to CalPERS (pension fund) having underestimated life expectancy and overestimated their investment’s rate of return. However, unlike many other cities, Carpinteria has actively controlled pension increases through employee cost sharing and buying-down pension costs to effectively reduce future exposure.

Despite this diligence, the City’s expenses for providing services are now greater than our income from traditional funding sources, some of which haven’t changed since the 1980s. Increased costs relate to inflation, deteriorating infrastructure, growing costs of disaster preparedness and public safety, State Clean Water mandates, and Federal Disability Act requirements. Additionally, the Carpinteria Library no longer receives adequate State and County funding and our City Council has repeatedly stepped in to help. Despite years of careful management, the City cannot continue to cover these shortfalls indefinitely without facing severe cuts to many essential services.

Along with many individuals, organizations, and small business owners, the Carpinteria City Council unanimously supports Measure X to help maintain services and provide a healthy financial future. This sales tax increase is the fairest way to maintain our small-town quality of life because one-half of Measure X revenues are expected to come from visitors to Carpinteria. In addition, most groceries and prescription drugs are not subject to sales tax.

Regarding local cannabis cultivation in our valley, reports show that this industry is not expected to result in major tax revenue for Carpinteria. However, cannabis growers in the Carpinteria Valley could contribute to the local economy by creating jobs and spending money for goods and services in the city.

Please remember to vote on Nov. 6. This may be one of the most important elections in our lifetime nationally, and in small towns like ours. If you like Carpinteria as it is today and want to preserve its beloved character, please join me in voting to re-elect experienced city councilmembers with a track record of sound financial management.

A short ceremony was held as the Isaac and Brown families presented the Carpinteria Education Foundation with a $40,000 check for arts programming in CUSD schools.

Michael Littlejohn gave a talk on CUSD transportation, detailing the fleet of busses and drivers serving the community of 90-to-100 students who are bussed to school in Carpinteria each day.

The CUSD Board of Trustees meets next on Tuesday, Oct. 23.

If 50 percent vote the incumbent slate and 50 percent vote the challengers without using their third vote, the election would be a five-way tie: A=1,750; B=1,750; C=1,750; X=1,750 and Y=1,750 However, if 50 percent vote the slate and 50 percent vote the challengers, and only three of them use their third vote to vote for one of the incumbents, the incumbents will win: A=1,750 +1=1,751; B=1,750+1=1,751; C=1,750+1=1,751; X=1,750 and Y=1,750 Only three voters (voting for the challengers), who use their third vote to vote for an incumbent will ensure all of the incumbents will win.

Slate voting gives a unique advantage to the incumbents. If you are for the incumbents, this is not an issue for you, as your candidates will most likely win because of this advantage. However, if you prefer one or both of the challengers, you cannot use your third vote, if you do, you are voting against your desired challenger and the incumbent will most likely win.

Our small beach town, vote incumbents

Front and center on page one of the City of Carpinteria General Plan, it is clearly stated that the goal of the community is “to preserve the essential character of our small beach town, its familyoriented residential neighborhoods, its unique visual and natural resources and its open, rural surroundings, while enhancing recreational, cultural and economic opportunities for our citizens.”

Our City Council has worked hard to keep this goal as their guiding principle for their decisions, and they have been very successful in doing so. The Carpinteria we have today is a result of sound decisions by our City Council over many years, including by the current councilmembers.

The members of the City Council are faced with numerous complex decisions.

They need to balance fiscal prudence with the expenses required to provide the services that help make Carpinteria a great place to live. They need to evaluate the benefits of tourism compared to the added costs for parks and roads, as well as impacts to air quality, traffic congestion, parking, etc. These are not easy or obvious decisions, but our current councilmembers have consistently acted in ways that best achieve the goal of the community as stated in the General Plan.

The Carpinteria Valley Association has been actively involved in local planning issues since 1964, a year before Carpinteria even became a city. We have a deep appreciation and respect for what makes Carpinteria the small beach town we all love. Based on our experience over this time, and based on what we have seen from the current City Council, we strongly endorse the incumbents City Council Members Gregg Carty, Al Clark and Brad Stein for re-election on Nov. 6.

Known quantity, vote incumbents

There are two faces running for City Council who are unfamiliar to many of us. Their campaign statements are full of the usual blah-blah-small-beach-townblah-blah but their statements are short on specifics. Where do they think the current Council made a mistake? What specific actions do they propose that the Council take? Their campaign literature gives few clues because maybe they don’t know enough to make proposals.

The current councilmembers are a known quantity. They are dependable and we know pretty much how they will run the City. They have served us well doing the things that need doing while keeping Carpinteria solvent when other similar cities flirted with bankruptcy. But what about the newcomers? How steady are they? What do they believe? It is safer to trust what we know rather than to experiment with people with no city government experience and no track record.

We attended a Council meeting last month that apparently was a candidate’s first ever time at a City Council meeting since he was unfamiliar with the proceedings. We suggested to him that he should start a little lower on the ladder by asking to be put on the Downtown T Business Advisory Board, make a thoughtful contribution to the General Plan Update Committee or contribute his time to any other board or committee that interests him. He needs some apprenticeship. It is a little arrogant to want to start running things when you need help finding the restroom.

Roy Lee is just the person to help guide our City Council into the foreseeable future. He is a dedicated husband and a father of three children, all attending public school here in Carpinteria. Proof is in the pudding, vote incumbents

Voting for political offices has always been troublesome for me, however this one, is very easy for me and my family.

We moved to Carpinteria in 1974 and have always voted for our city council favorites and often times some very poor candidates whom we did not support squeaked through the election process and we were forced to put up with some very poor decisions they made.

This year our choices are very simple and they should be based on the positive outcomes that our present councilmembers have acted upon, especially, saving the Bluffs, not contaminating our beaches by closing our oil production, supporting highway renewal and the School District with its rebuilding process and first and foremost, keeping Carpinteria small.

These are only a few of the great accomplishments made by this City Council.

During the next few years there are many important issues to be acted upon and we already know that our present City Council will make the right choices.

Al Clark, Gregg Carty and Brad Stein are doing a great job and we should support them and elect them for another four years to our Carpinteria City Council.

As my mama used to say, “proof is in the pudding and if it’s great why change it!” And they are great. Vote for our incumbents.

Time for change

Is it time for a change on our City Council? YES. It’s not that the current incumbents have done a bad job, it’s just that, well, change is good and needed. A fresh look at our city by a new face is good for everyone. In general, we should have term limits in all forms of government but that’s not going to happen anytime soon.

Meeting and talking with Roy Lee has shown me that he has the desire and the ability. Like Roy, back in the early 1970s, I was a young 29-year old with three young kids and I just wanted to bring some change to our City Council, so I ran and won. Those were different times in so many ways.

We had to vote to turn a lemon orchard into what is now Shepard Place, another orchard into what is now the Albertsons Plaza, we voted to ban highway billboards from our city limits. Those seem like such simple things compared to what our City officials have to do these days but, never the less, very important.

Leaving the same three incumbents in office for another four years is a vote for “the same old thing.” Mark your ballots for change, vote Roy Lee.

High functioning psychopath

In 2005, UC Irvine neuroscientist James Fallon was studying anatomical patterns in the brain that correlated with psychopathic behaviors. While simulta-

neously doing a study on Alzheimer’s, he discovered a brain scan that was, as he described, “obviously pathological.”

To his surprise, he realized that the psychopathic brain scanned belonged to him.

The scan showed low activity in the frontal and temporal lobes linked to empathy, morality and self-control. Rather than hiding the finding from the world and his family, he shared his discovery, including a Ted Talk, in many interviews and eventually a book, “The Psychopath Inside.”

Mr. Fallon is 71 and a married father of three. He is what he and others call a “pro-social psychopath.” And despite Hollywood’s stereotypical portrayal of the psychopath, only a small percentage ever kill.

Mr. Fallon is a “high functioning psychopath,” and believes what kept him from going down a bad path was the love and protection he received from his parents. Others like him, however, aren’t so lucky.

Among Mr. Fallon’s other tendencies are his inclination for power and manipulating others. Other characteristics of the personality include pathological lying, sexual promiscuity, failure to accept responsibility and a consistent disregard for social norms and the rights and feelings of others.

This personality feels no remorse and is often described as “without a conscience.” “Without Conscience” is a best seller, written by the foremost authority on the subject, Robert Hare.

Unfortunately, great charisma is another defining characteristic of this person.

They’re not only fervid cult leaders, history shows some of the worst world leaders as clearly psychopathic. Disregarding institutional norms while attempting to delegitimize the most significant check on him—a free and functioning press—have been utilized over and over, sometimes with irreparable consequences.

This scenario, however, can happen anywhere.

Americans deserve better

The author of the letter “Elections have consequences” (CVN, Vol. 24, No. 3) Langdon Nevens, demonstrates just how far from the mainstream the Republican party has gone.

He refers to President Obama as part of the “radical left,” yet we haven’t had a liberal president since LBJ. Every Democrat elected since has been a centrist.

He also states, “the American people made the right choice” but I would point out that the majority of Americans voted for Hillary Clinton, not Donald Trump.

Then he goes off on Senate Democrats for their actions regarding the Kavanaugh appointment to the Supreme Court. The fact is that documents that should have been reviewed prior to his consideration were kept from the Senate and the public. After Kavanaugh’s “performance,” retired Supreme Court Justice (and Republican) John Paul Stevens stated that Kavanaugh should have been disqualified due to his behavior.

The American people deserve better.

arpinteria needs additional revenue to maintain infrastructure and provide essential services, and is proposing a sales tax increase of 1.25% to accomplish this. Is this a sign of financial mismanagement? Not at all. It is because over the years, we have opted for: a nature preserve instead of an oil refinery, and open space instead of a resort hotel on the bluffs; a salt marsh instead of a yacht marina; a new neighborhood instead of a Costco; and preserving the farmland that surrounds our City.

All of these and other similar choices we made together, because we value our small beach town, and don’t want Carpinteria to go the way of countless other coastal towns.

But each of those decisions meant that tax revenues from that land would be lower or non existent. In the meantime, our streets kept aging, costs for law enforcement kept increasing, and inflation affected all of our city services. We have shaped Carpinteria by our choices, and this modest tax increase is the price we (and our visitors) must pay to keep our town in the shape we all want it to be.

William “Billy” Raymond Kuhn 2/22/1958 – 9/21/2018

Loving son, brother, uncle, nephew, husband to Debbie and a friend to many, Billy was involved with the Braille Institute and was a Carpinteria Lions Club member. He loved to travel, retirement and the ocean. He will be missed.

Kay Edmundson Burns 8/21/1930 – 10/8/2018

On Monday, Oct. 8, 2018, Kay Edmundson Burns, passed away peacefully at the age of 88. Kay was born on Aug. 21, 1930 in San Pedro, California to Charles Sidwell and Marjorie Cadwell Edmundson. Great grand-daughter of Oren N. Cadwell who homesteaded in Carpinteria in 1867, she was fourth-generation born and sixth-generation to have lived in California.

Raised in San Pedro, Kay later attended Pomona College where she met and married her husband, Tony Burns.

They moved to Massachusetts while Tony attended MIT and earned his PhD in Analytical Chemistry. They later returned to California where they raised two daughters and a son. After living in Pasadena, Palo Alto, Palos Verdes and Solana Beach, they retired in 1998 to Montvalmar Ranch, the family homestead.

Kay was a loving and supportive wife and mother who loved to sing, dance and travel. She was charming and intelligent, enjoyed decorating and entertaining, and had a great sense of humor. She was a Jobs Daughter, soprano in her church choir, Girl Scout leader, active in the Delphian Society and Pomona College Alumni Association.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband and son Kevin Burns, Kay is survived by two daughters, Karen Burns and Kristy Michel, daughter-in-law Annette Burns, grandsons Dustin (Patty) Michel, Derrick (Beckie) Michel, Anthony Burns and Raymond Oaks, and two great-grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by family and friends.

A celebration of Kay’s life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. at the Carpinteria Cemetery with a reception at Montvalmar Ranch immediately following. Attire is California casual with a Hawaiian theme.

Two traffic incidents involving students reported in the past month

By DeBRa HeRRiCk The message is clear from local law enforcement and school officials; drivers need to be more cautious in school zones.

Since the start of the 2018-19 school year at Carpinteria Unified School District, two students on foot were hit by slowmoving vehicles, the latest of which occurred on Friday, Oct. 12, on Palm and Carpinteria avenues, near Carpinteria Middle School.

While residents may be quick to blame commuters, Lieutenant Brian Thielst warns that according to the reports, both of the incidents involved local drivers.

The first incident occurred on Sept. 14.

A 12-year old boy entered the crosswalk on Carpinteria Avenue, “without making sure it was safe to do so,” according to the report. The student was struck by a vehicle traveling at a very low speed. He was transported to Cottage Hospital and treated for a hurt ankle.

In the second incident on Oct. 12, an 18-year old Carpinteria woman was stopped in her vehicle at the crosswalk at Palm and Carpinteria avenues to allow pedestrians to cross. A second vehicle heading up Palm, driven by a 43-year old man, failed to stop and collided with the first car, causing it to lurch forward and hit a student in the crosswalk. The student was taken to the hospital and treated for an abrasion on his arm.

“Residents traveling through town near the schools during morning start times and afternoon end times,” said Thielst, “please drive slower and be more cautious in those areas.”

Thielst has requested LED message boards from Caltrans for school zones to remind drivers to slow down, and is currently waiting for Caltrans’ response.

The lieutenant has also upped the police presence in school zones during drop off and pick up times. “I send them out first

thing in the morning and that helps,” said Thielst. “We’ll try and continue to do that.

Sometimes we get a call but the majority of the time they’ll be out there. Usually there are four cars driving around to cover the high school and city areas.”

The City of Carpinteria will be working with CUSD to train middle school security personnel to work as crossing guards on Carpinteria Avenue.

CUSD Superintendent Diana Rigby did not mince words. “Slow down, drivers!” she wrote. “During the morning and afternoon school commuting time, our crosswalks are filled with many students walking, running and biking to/from school. City traffic is heavily congested with freeway, road and school construction projects, so please slow down. Teachers and parents are reinforcing pedestrian safety with their students. CUSD is working with the City, Sheriff, and consultants from Safe Routes to School to reduce the risks of accidents, and drivers need to slow down when approaching our schools.”

Congestion on Carpinteria roads has increased each year, according to Kirstin Ayars, Community Liaison for Hwy 101: Linden and Casitas Pass Project, who noted that “Yes, we’re doing construction on the highway, but when we have the lanes open is when these incidents have happened… As community members, we need to be more cautious. SBCAG, Caltrans and the City are all trying to make it safer and easier to get around town.”

Traffic on Hwy 101 Northbound slows significantly during peak hours, starting at Bailard Avenue and continuing in a slow crawl to Santa Barbara. “With the congestion on the freeway people are trying to find alternate routes,” said Ayars.

“But that’s why we’re doing these projects, to get people to stay on the freeway.

If you don’t fix the freeway, people will jump off and use the other roads.”

The Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve hosted 140 third-graders from Canalino, Aliso and Carpinteria Family schools for the Katie Roberts Bluffs Day on Oct. 16. The annual event coordinated by the Citizens for the Carpinteria Bluffs turned the City’s nature preserve into an outdoor classroom. Under sunny skies, students rotated among stations led by Holly Lohuis of the Ocean Futures Society, the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County, the Ojai Raptor Center and artists Meredith and Whitney Abbott.

Rio Vogt of the Ojai Raptor Center’s education team, introduces Topper, a burrowing owl, to a group of thirdgraders. The Ojai Raptor Center will hold their annual open house on Nov. 4, inviting the public to engage with a wide-variety of birds of prey.

Gathering the season

Five simple ways to elevate your entertaining game without breaking the bank

It is easy to worry about what we don’t have, or what we don’t have enough of, when inviting people over for dinner. With Thanksgiving and other major holidays just around the corner, some of us will probably end up with a few extra people at our table. Here are five things I learned while hosting a dinner party for 25 last month, as part of my cookbook club dinner series, Cookbook-ish. When dinner is at your house next time, I hope these tips will come in handy.

Make it a potluck

Unless it is a catered event, the obvious choice for organizing a large dinner party is a potluck. One thing I remember from hosting potlucks in the past, is that while people often want to bring a dish to share, they don’t always know what dish to bring. So, before it gets easy, it can get hard with everyone asking the same question, “What can I bring?” One way to navigate this part of the process, and the exact mechanism I use for my cookbook club gatherings, is to ask everyone to cook something from the same cookbook.

Chances are most people already have a trusted classic cookbook, or they can borrow your copy. For my recent Cookbookish gathering, I chose “The Art of Simple Food” by Alice Waters.

We ended up with quite a feast of four appetizers, two salads and four main dishes. There were cookies with fruit compote for dessert, too. I knew that having individual menus printed for each guest was out of the question (did I mention 25 people and over 10 menu items?).

Enter Susan Silverberg, Santa-Ynez based hand-lettering and calligraphy extraordinaire, who wrote the names of dishes on various objects and surfaces that were displayed next to the food.

Make it neutral

Choosing a neutral color palette for the table can provide the perfect backdrop when you have a variety of food and serving dishes to display. Think of it as a blank canvas for the communal art piece that everyone will have had a hand in making. First off, a neutral tablecloth. Nobody (including me) has a big-enough tablecloth to cover a table that seats 25, and most people don’t have a long-enough table that’s pretty enough to go uncovered. I don’t use the term “life hack” lightly, so when I say “use a painter’s drop cloth if you don’t have a

They are inexpensive and come in a variety of sizes. Just be sure to get one without the protective plastic lining, or you won’t be able to machine wash and dry it. Layer smaller tablecloths over the drop cloths for a more dimensional look.

Mismatch, but not too much

Choosing one color for all the dishware helps keep the mismatched look from edging into the hodgepodge territory.

Especially if all the chairs are different, too. Chances are you already have some plates in a solid, neutral color and can easily buy, borrow or rent a few extra ones in a similar color and style. I used vintage ironstone plates I collected over time and supplemented them with similar ones from a friend. White plates aren’t the most exciting choice and can certainly make the long table look like a scene from a cafeteria. To avoid the other extreme of having the table look too uniform, I mixed in salad plates in earth tones and vintage pewter.

When it comes to flatware, I suggest using the same type of a metal while mismatching the patterns and styles.

splurge on one thing

I might be slightly biased here, but I firmly believe that having high-quality napkins can make a lasting impression.

Not everyone will have a chance to try all the dishes on the table, but everyone will touch the napkins and use them often throughout the meal. Natural fibers like linen are always my first choice. They have beautiful texture, won’t leave any lint on your lap, and add an extra degree of style to the table. There is really no such thing as too many napkins and, unlike extra plates and cups, they take up very little drawer “real estate.” I used FOLD linen napkins in mulberry for this event.

Carpinterians can take advantage of autumn’s comfortable weather and host thanksgiving in the backyard.

After hosting a few larger gatherings for Cookbook-ish, I learned two things.

One: I can’t do it all myself. Two: people like to help. By now I am not too shy to ask my guests to bring a few extra chairs, unless it’s a picnic, in which case I ask them to bring extra blankets.

Cookbook-ish is a book club and a community of like-minded foodies and creative people in the Santa Barbaraarea. I curate the book selection and ask everyone to choose two to three recipes they’d like to make. I then come up with a cohesive menu based on everyone’s selections. We cook at home and bring our respective dishes to share in a potluck style dinner. Next month’s book is “How to Eat a Peach by Diana Henry.”

Notice of Public Hearing Carpinteria Unified School District Real Property District Advisory Committee Please take notice that on November 8, 2018, at 6:00 p.m., at the Carpinteria Unified School District Board Room, 1400 Linden Ave, Carpinteria 93013 the Real Property District Advisory Committee (DAC) will conduct a public hearing on its preliminary recommendations concerning disposition of two unused school sites. At the same meeting, following the close of the public hearing, the DAC may submit its final recommendation to the CUSD Governing Board. The preliminary recommendations and background information are as follows: 1. DAC recommendation. Designate the Whitney Avenue site (Temple Street in Summerland, 6.84 acres) as surplus and sell or otherwise dispose of the site in accordance with law.

Background: This vacant site was acquired in approximately 1955 and has been unused during the interim. Earlier plans to potentially relocate the existing Summerland School to this location have been studied and rejected. The site has been considered for possible sale for several years.

2. DAC recommendation. Designate the 1101 and 1103 Bailard Ave. sites (two contiguous properties, 3.78 and 3.20 acres, with improvements) as surplus and sell or otherwise dispose of the sites in accordance with law.

Background: These sites were acquired in 2000 for a possible new school. However, sustained enrollment declines have ruled out any future utilization for a new school. This site has been considered for possible sale for several years.

Sale proceeds from these properties are restricted to capital projects and would be available to fund facility needs not included in the Measure U bond program.

Warriors tennis program brings down wins

The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team has been on a tear across the newly formed Citrus Coast League, capturing their first seven matches to start 7-0 and earning the number-one ranking in CIF-Southern Section’s Division Four for a number of weeks. With the senior leadership of Josie Gordon, Karla Marin, Amy Perez, Leigh Pluma, Jessica Santillan and Viviana Torres, the squad is in good position to gain a share of the first-ever Citrus Coast League title with Malibu. “It’s probably the nicest team I’ve ever coached, I don’t want to say I’m surprised (with their success) … they’ve worked hard, they’ve put in the hours,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant.

The Warriors have blended a variety of opponents from higher divisions, such as nearby CIF Division One Cate School, with schools as far away as El Dorado of Placentia with their regularly scheduled League matches. “We’ve played a very difficult schedule, we’ve kind of lost to the teams we expected to, and competed against those teams as well,” explained Bryant of his team who has amassed an overall record of 14-5. Carpinteria finally lost their first league game to Malibu after the Warriors and Sharks played multiple tiebreaks with the scored tied at the end of regulation at 9-9 in to the darkness of the night. “I think we took a lot out of that (loss), that type of pressure scenario, I think we value our points a little more, hopefully,” said Bryant.

The strength of the team seems to come from the doubles players, led by the duo of Marin and Perez who’ve been paired together on the court the past two years. “Most of the doubles teams that we play, their doubles are usually the weakest, their singles are the strongest,” explained Marin. “I like being able to talk to the person,” said Perez of her preference of playing doubles more than singles where players are pretty much on their own on the court.

The Warriors have also received a big contribution from the doubles team of juniors Lexi Persoon and Jeannette Carrillo. Although Bryant likes Carpinteria’s chances in the upcoming CIF playoffs, he’s hesitant to compare this group to the two-time Warrior championship teams of 2012 and 2013 when his daughter, Kelsie Bryant, played a huge role. “We’re in (CIF) Division Four, except for Laguna Blanca who we played last week … there are no teams around here in Division Four, so it’s really hard to know who our competition is and how strong they

The regular season schedule ends with two League matches to decide the title. Next week, the inaugural Citrus Coast League Meet takes place at Hueneme with Marin and Perez in the doubles competition with Bryant undecided on the other pair he’ll send to represent the school. “I think we can compete just as well as anybody can,” assured Bryant.

Whatever the outcome, it’s been a season of high achievements for the Carpinteria High School girls tennis program.

Girls golf October 9 - The Carpinteria High School girls golf team played Santa Paula at Mountain View Golf Club, shooting a new team low for the season, a 291; but Fillmore was the low-team winner on the day with a 232. “Everyone on the team smashed their previous personal best which produced a new team best for the season,” said Warriors coach Reina Kearns. Senior Danni Fulton shot 56; while freshman Daisy Martinez shot 56 and Diana Higareda shot 57. Three other freshmen Natali Elizarraraz, Ruby Varela and Sydney McCaskey had a 59, 63 and 69, respectively. Low individual round went to Alyssa Ibarra from Fillmore who shot a 41.

October 11 – The Carpinteria High School girls golf team traveled to Ojai to participate in Nordhoff’s home event and final league match, shooting their second lowest team total of 301. Freshman Diana Higareda shot 66 and senior Danni Fulton shot 62, while freshmen Ruby Varela and Sydney McCaskey shot 69 and 70 respectively.

Daisy Martinez and Natali Elizarraraz fired the team low of 53. Fillmore won the team championship and will represent the Citrus Coast League at Soule Park. Boys water polo October 10 - The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team visited Nordhoff for a league game. The Warriors were able to pull ahead in the first quarter en route to a 16-5 win over the Rangers despite being faced with an unorthodox shallow, deep pool. Senior Ali Hamadi was the main offensive threat, scoring 11 goals throughout the game. “Gabe Medel also had a great game with crucial assists and a great goal that made Nordhoff’s defense respect his presence,” said Carpinteria assistant Sergio Castaneda. The Warriors Citrus Coast League Record is 5–0 with an overall record of 12-3.

October 12-13 - The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team attended the Oxnard Tournament and ended with a 2-2 record by the end of Saturday. In the first game against Buena, the Warriors managed to create a 3-0 lead and push forward to win the game 10 to 4. The second game of the day was against Newbury Park who had previously defeated the Warriors at their home pool. “The Warriors were down (4-0) but showed that they still had a lot more left in them, and that they would not back down, they brought the score to 7-9,” said Carpinteria assistant Sergio Castaneda. a 10-7 win. The third game began right after the three-minute continuation of the Newbury Park game, against the El Dorado Hawks. The ending score was 7-4 with the Warriors taking another loss. The Warriors final game would be against Camarillo, an opponent they had previously beaten to win the Conejo Tournament. The Warriors pushed through and took the game, winning 9-4. “Stars this tournament include seniors Luke Nahooikaika-Anderson and Liam Slade,” said Castaneda of Nahooikaika-Anderson who scored six goals in the tournament and Slade tallying an unofficial 36 blocks on the weekend. The Warriors placed seventh out of 16 teams at the Oxnard Tournament.

Girls tennis October 10 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team defeated Laguna Blanca in a non-league match, 12-6. “I was really impressed with Lexi Persoon/Jeannette Carrillo, they were awesome today and showed a lot of composure at the net with some amazing, quick reaction volleys paired with solid baseline play,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Vivi Torres/Leigh Pluma and Karla Marin/Amy Perez also swept. In singles, Emma Lapidus led the way with two wins. Vicky Delk won her only set before heading to a city college class. Carpinteria is now 15-4 overall and still 7-0 in the Citrus Coast League.

October 11 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team in a Citrus Coast League match were beaten by Malibu 9-9 (76-76), 9-9 (100-93). “So, to clarify, the teams were tied in sets 9-9, so the next tiebreaker is to add up games, and that too was tied,7676,” explained Warriors coach Charles Bryant. To help decide the match, the teams played a round robin of tiebreakers (first to seven points, winning by two) against all three of the opponents that they had each just faced. But that tiebreak also ended in a 9-9 tie, and the Sharks ended up winning on an aggregate of all tiebreak scores, 100-93. Vicky Delk took on Malibu’s number-two player, but had to default the match due to a lower leg injury. Delk should be fine according to Bryant. Sydney Endow won seven more games this time around, defeating the Sharks Number-three player to give Carpinteria a temporary lead. “We swept all of the doubles, but I was really impressed with Amy Perez/Karla Marin today; they were incredible and I am not sure I have seen them play better,” said Bryant. Vivi Torres/Leigh Pluma and Jeannette Carrillo/Lexi Persoon also swept. Carpinteria is now 15-5 overall and 7-1 in the Citrus Coast League.

October 15 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team dropped a non-league match to Thacher, a Division Two squad, 14-4. “Lexi Persoon/Jeannette Carrillo went 1-2 and came close to pulling out another win but lost in the tiebreak against the Toads’ number-one team, 7-6 (6),” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. Karla Marin paired with Jessica Santillan for the first time all year, going 1-1 together. In singles, Emma Lapidus went 1-2. Josie Gordon also went 1-2 with one of her losses being a default due to an injury. Carpinteria is now 15-6 overall and still 7-1 in the Citrus Coast League.

Cross country October 10 - The Carpinteria High School cross country team took on Cate in a dual meet held at the Bluffs. Carpinteria split boys and girls races with the boys defeating Cate 25 to 30, and the Ram girls defeating their female foes, 25 to 30 also. City Champion was Carpinteria’s Caleb Classen who finished in first place with a time of 17:20. Ytxzae Enriquez finished in third place at 17:40, and Victor Rinaldi took fourth place in 18:00. The top girls finishers were Shayla Alvarez in second in 20:57, Savannah Alvarez in fourth place with a time of 21:26 and Edith Lopez in seventh place at 23:13.

Rams steamroll another big win by david soto

On a night when lightning lit up the skies throughout Southern California, the Cate football team kept the scoreboard, or at least their half of it, bright in a 54-9 win at Villanova in Ojai. The win pushes Cate to 6-0.

Offensively, the first half belonged to the Deardorff family. Senior Jack Deardorff scored Cate’s first two touchdowns on runs of five yards and one. In the second frame, younger brother junior William Deardorff took one in from 14 yards out before the two connected on a 20-yard pitch and catch. Villanova ended the half with a touchdown as time expired in the second quarter. It would be the only time they found the end zone on the evening.

The third quarter saw Cate open things up. Senior Drew Anastasio rumbled into the end zone from 32 yards out. After a Wildcat field goal, another senior Cal Sinclair found pay dirt on a nine-yard run. William Deardorff was at it again to close out the third quarter, dashing into the end zone from 45 yards out. He also had the only score of the fourth quarter, as he thrashed in and around the Villanova defense for a 50-yard touchdown run. Junior Khadim Pouye was a weapon for Cate and made plays both in the passing and running games.

The Cate defense was smothering all game long and forced four turnovers on the evening. Juniors Scott Holmes, Thomas Nettesheim, Chris Tarafa, along with seniors Jake Nelson and Ethan Cassulo did a nice job of corralling a talented and hard-running Villanova offense. Juniors Callum Casey, Dalton Phillips, Will Anderson and Elliott Tsai, provided punishing hit after punishing hit all game long. Senior Sebastian Richardson, along with sophomores James Marin, Jay Hernandez, Jasper Bennett and freshman John Endres, each made big plays and gave Cate great depth.

Coaches talked all week about how they wanted the team to come out and play physical, and that’s exactly what the Rams did. Cate is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 20, when they host Hesperia Christian, who is the top-ranked team is Division Two. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Cate Mesa.

Meanwhile, Cate’s Grace Fuss and Yuki Kobayashi took two sets and aminah hill and Kate Tunnell each added one while taking turns at the number-three singles position for the Rams. “It’s pretty rare to go 54-0 in either singles or doubles, and especially when even a substitute team gets in on the action,” said Rams coach Trevor Thorpe. “That’s just the depth and understanding we’ve got on the doubles end right now,” added Thorpe. Cervantes is one of the most dedicated players on the team. Bantams lost 0-36.

Carpinteria Morning Rotary expands to Latin America

Rotary Club Morning Carpinteria inducted new members into its Carpinteria Morning Guatemala and Chile Edition clubs. Morning Rotary is excited to be a lead in this new structure club, according to Wade Nomura. The program already has 25 members. The Guatemala group just completed a $2 million international eye project.

“Amazing!” said Nomura, “No wonder we earned Best Overall Club in the District 5240. Each group meets weekly in Antigua and Limache Chile.”

Briana Sapp-Tivey and Leana Orsua of the Santa Barbara Natural History Museum presented Morning Rotary with recent museum improvements, including needed infrastructure upgrades and new exhibits. The mammal hall, for example, has new LED lighting and more engaging settings created with the help of Hollywood set designers. The Butterfly Pavilion is now a permanent structure. The “backyard” children’s exploration area now has a ranger’s cabin, a remodeled “river” and an actual paleontology “dig site.” Over 20,000 visitors a year tour the museum yearly.

Three families move into their Habitat for Humanity homes Photos by Robin KaRlsson At a ceremony for Habitat for Humanity of Southern Santa Barbara County’s fourth affordable housing neighborhood on Oct. 12, three new homeowners received the keys to their new affordable homes on 4949 Sawyer Ave. in Carpinteria. Local city and government officials, including Superintendent Das Williams and Carpinteria Mayor Fred Shaw, along with Habitat staff, Board of Directors and community supporters gathered to celebrate and welcome the Polunets, Huerta and Lopez families into their new homes.

The homes were designed by local DMHA Architecture. Each features three bedrooms and is roughly 1,200 square feet with a detached carport. As part of Habitat’s affordable homeownership model, the three families will purchase the homes from Habitat for Humanity with an affordable mortgage designed to fit within 30 percent of each family’s annual income. All first-time homebuyers, the three families were selected from over 80 applicants in a rigorous application process. Selection was based on the families’ critical need for affordable housing, ability to pay a no-interest mortgage and willingness to partner with Habitat in the construction of their home.

Treasures, keepsakes and tidying up

a monthly muse melinda wittwer My family is down-sizing, trying to get organized, trying to weed-out items we can live without and at the rate we are moving, it looks like we might get this job done by the time I’m celebrating my 100th birthday. First I have a large file cabinet full of financial records, tax documents, health records, insurance policies and miscellaneous items I’m sure I might need some day—like my water bills from 2003.

I have promised myself for years that I will take the time to carefully go through each file and purge anything of no importance, and once I get this job completed, I will do it again each year. The hardest part seems to be getting started.

Next on my list of down-sizing chores is my closet. I hate to say this, but I have some clothes in my closet with the tags still on, never worn. We’ve all purchased

items that looked “cute” in the store, but when we get them home, they don’t feel good or the color makes us look sea sick or they’re too long or too short or just plain frumpy. Those items need to go.

In addition, I need to get rid of anything I haven’t worn in the last three years, anything that reminds me of the 1970’s, anything too big or too small, and anything that itches. I need to purge the tattered underwear, the socks with missing mates, and the shoes I no longer wear.

Of course, I need to try on each questionable item and make a quick and decisive decision whether to keep it or send it off to the thrift store. If I accomplish this by Christmas, I should at least get a trip to Hawaii.

Perhaps the hardest part of downsizing, for me, is deciding what to do with all the “treasures” left behind by my parents, my husband’s parents, and my favorite aunt. These people came from families that struggled through the depression and had very few if any nice things. After World War II as the economy picked up, these families accumulated china and sets of silver and crystal and cut glass, all items deemed necessary to show the world how much their lot had improved.

And now I have boxes and boxes and boxes of beautiful pieces I will probably

never use, I have no room for, and my sons do not want. What do I do? Do I turn over the cut glass to an antique store? Do I use the fine china until it breaks? Do I sleep with the hand-sewn quilts even though they might get dirty or worn out?

And what should I do with all my books? We have a small reading room upstairs we call our library where we have books we studied in college, romance novels my aunt liked, children’s books of all kinds, car books, books from my childhood, books from my book club, books given to me by friends, and even books I purchased myself. But if I have a book I haven’t touched in the last 10 years, do I really need to keep this book? Can’t I give myself permission to donate these books to the library book store? That way I’ll be happy and maybe someone else can enjoy a book that is new to them.

One area of the house I find really difficult to tackle is the kitchen. How many knives do I need? How many peelers or choppers or graters or mixers are necessary for me to prepare a meal? I have gadgets still in their packaging, but I’m sure I will use them someday. How about potholders and cookie cutters and pie plates (I don’t even make pies) and even a bread machine (mine still works—at least it did when I used it last year)? How

many pots and pans and utensils are required to cook for two people? Maybe the best solution is to donate all my kitchen items and just stop cooking at all if a meal is more complicated than a peanut butter sandwich.

Finally, I am having a big problem with letting go of my rather large stash of pottery. I love being a potter, throwing pots and glazing them—especially bowls.

Once and awhile I sell a piece, and I often give items away or make something special for a friend. Yet I still have quite a supply of ceramic art that I can’t quite just throw away, but I really don’t have room for.

I’m writing about downsizing because I really want to reduce the amount of stuff I have to worry about and fuss with, and I’m hoping this mental exercise will push me to get on with sorting and filing and giving things away. Perhaps I’ll start right after I go see my grandkids next month, celebrate Christmas and New Year’s, and also get the taxes done. But if I were you, I wouldn’t bet on it.

Kevin Baird, a wealth manager and president of the Carpinteria Sunset Rotary Club, gathered with 1,400 of his closest friends for a week-long bicycle ride around Northeastern Oregon, putting in 450 miles and about 25,000 vertical feet of climbing. Baird brought out his copy of Coastal View News in the town of Pendleton Oregon at 7a.m., anticipating another 70 miles of riding on country roads.
