Coastal View News unintentionally reported fake news last week. The winner of the 2017 California Avocado Festival’s largest avocado contest was longtime contender Marty Panizzon, whose behemoth fruit weighed in at 3 pounds, 10 ounces.

The Granaroli family, which has taken the top spot year after year, was erroneously reported as this year’s winner. Panizzon grew the Dailey variety on his Santa Monica Road ranch. He said there are three highly guarded secrets to growing such a heavy weight: 1) water, 2) sunshine, 3) fertilizer. After the fruits are weighed in for the annual contest, they are auctioned off to the crowd. Proceeds from the auction benefit the Carpinteria High School Future Farmers of America program.

Summerland homeless encampment burns

A fire that broke out in an Ortega Hill homeless encampment on the morning of Oct. 16 left one person injured and was caused by an open flame stove, according to the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District. Reported at 8:23 a.m. and extinguished at 8:56 a.m., the fire engulfed the 450-square-foot encampment, which was located on a plateau between the freeway and the railroad tracks, and spread about 30 feet up the hillside toward the freeway. The fire district has contacted Union Pacific in an effort to condemn a second homeless camp to the east of the burned area that raises concern for future fire risks.

A Carpinterian was among the 15 men arrested over the last month for attempting to solicit a prostitute. Rigoberto Ramirez, 31, of Carpinteria was arrested and booked into the Lompoc Police Department Jail for violation of solicitation of prostitution on Sept. 29. His arrest was part of a multi-agency sting partially funded by a federal grant to address human trafficking. In this sting, investigators placed an online advertisement on a publicly accessible website known for online prostitution-related advertisements. The ad announced the availability of a female willing to engage in sexual acts in exchange for money. Once the ad was placed, an undercover detective negotiated with the “John,” after which the undercover detective gave the John the location of the hotel to meet for the sex act. When the person arrived at the location, the John was arrested. All subjects were cooperative when contacted by arresting detectives.

Lagunitas proposal sent back to drawing board

Designers of the latest version of the Lagunitas office park were sent away from an Oct. 12 City of Carpinteria Architectural Review Board meeting with a heavy helping of pointed criticism to mull over before returning with updated plans. Proposals to develop the property, which is one-half of the Lagunitas live/ work community, have been brought to the city since 2008, the latest version being a campus of four office buildings totaling near 80,000 square feet, one 4,000-squarefoot retail/restaurant building on Via Real and a 331-space parking lot between Calle Lagunitas and Lomita Lane—both private roads.

In a 4-0 vote (boardmember Dylan Chappell absent) the ARB issued a continuance to applicant Montana Avenue Capital Partners, LLC., asking that it return with updated plans reflecting extensive comments made at the meeting.

Residents of both the Lagunitas neighborhood and Lomita Lane filled the city council chambers to pick apart the project for reasons ranging from building orientation to size, design and generally being out of character with the surrounding homes.

The proposal for a retail/restaurant building, which is out of zone and would require a conditional use permit, was nearly unanimously lambasted. Many members of the public took to labeling it “the 7-11,” although Community Development Director Steve Goggia characterized the proposal as a market/deli similar to Cantwell’s in Summerland that could serve workers and residents.

In scathing remarks endorsed by the entire ARB, boardmember Scott Ellinwood said, “This is the last major commercial development in this community, and I’m pretty offended by the architecture that has been presented.” The same architects had earlier presented a similar concept to the ARB, and Ellinwood stated that none of the comments from the ARB had been incorporated in the updated rendering.

During public comment, Robert Rhodes said, “The restaurant is going to be a rest stop. We’ll have people hopping off the freeway to have a drink and use the bathroom, parking 18-wheelers and RVs.” A single 80,000-square-foot office building designed by Barton Myers had been approved by the Planning Commission in 2008 along with the 73-unit residential neighborhood. The original plan called for the construction of the office building first and then the residential side. Priority for purchasing the new homes would have been given to employees at the office in order to create a live/work environment.

commercial building in favor of moving ahead with the residential side only.

The homes were sold, and with the new neighborhood came residents accustomed to not having an office-building for a neighbor.

Fast-forward nine years and the original approved concept doesn’t fit the trend in corporate culture that favors a campus environment spread through several buildings and encouraging workday use of outdoor space. Included in the current campus rendering is an outdoor fire pit, which drew derision from neighbors who had already been sensitive to office and car lights shining into a neighborhood that had been built to minimize light pollution in the evening. The fire pit suggested an office campus constructed for after-hours gatherings.

Public commenter Olivia DeGeorge said, “The idea of a fire pit is insane. I feel a little lied to by these builders.”

Ellinwood took particular issue with colors and angles that could be softened in order to fit in with the residential environment. Also, he said the design completely disregarded the use of natural lighting. “There’s extensive information available (on natural lighting), and it’s something any architect should have learned in school,” he said.

While the current design hit a major roadblock at the ARB, an office park development remains an approved component of the Lagunitas live/work development. If applicants reverted back to the 2008 plan, they could simply bring the plan to the ARB for a final stamp of approval and begin construction without having to restart the review process from scratch, according to Goggia. Both Board Chair Richard Johnson and Board Member Jim Reginato said that the designers should go back to the architecture proposed in 2008 and simply spread that out over the four-building campus plan.

Bonning inducted into CIF-SS Hall of Fame

Retired Cate tennis coach Robert Bonning was inducted into the CIF-Southern Section Hall of Fame in a ceremony held in Long Beach yesterday. In 1976, Bonning began his career as a head boys tennis coach at Cate School and held the position for 39 years, amassing 527 wins and 190 losses.

During his tenure, Bonning won three CIF-SS Championships, including five CIF-SS runner-ups and reached the semifinals 20 times. His resume includes 30 league championships, including 16 in a row from 1984 to 1999. The former dean of students spent five years as the head girls tennis coach earning two CIF-SS runner-ups. Bonning was also a member of the CIF-SS Tennis Advisory Committee for five years; and also served as the Tournament Director for the CIF-SS Boys Individual Tennis Northern Regional.

In his 40 years at Cate, he also served as department chair, dean of faculty and assistant headmaster, before retiring in 2015. “Robert Bonning’s induction into the CIF-Southern Section Hall of Fame is a testament to his work as a coach and an educator,” said the school’s Sports Information Director Dave Soto. “What

Viewpoint The world is full of Weinsteins

By BEth Cox OR DISPLAY ADS, 2-COLUMN WIDTH = 4.75 As an advocate for victims of violence, I found the news of Mr. Weinstein’s actions to be no surprise. I was previously a certified Domestic Violence & Rape Crisis Advocate, and I experienced thousands of hotline calls at Domestic Violence Solutions of Santa Barbara, W.O.M.A.N. Inc. of SF, and Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center.

I have supported a plethora of survival experiences of sexual assault and domestic violence. I accompanied survivors to court, held their hands through law enforcement interviews and supported them through Sexual Assault Response Team medical exams and hospital stays.

Working in the legal field, I saw both sides, supporting survivors and defending accused/convicted perpetrators of this violence.

For two decades, this was my life.

It saddens me that the culture of sexual and domestic violence continues to exist.

It happens on a daily basis in so many ways, and we all have the power to object and change it. Sexual and domestic violence are learned behaviors; thus we can unlearn this behavior.

Social media has helped this movement immeasurably, but has also hindered it. As incredible as it is to see the widespread use of “#MeToo,” the flip side is that because people use social media in their own homes, work places, vehicles, coffee shops, breweries, etc.—they don’t see those faces. That makes it easy to consider it a gimmick or political agenda, and decide that it’s “go time” to ridicule and break those that are taking a stand.

That stand could have been difficult for survivors to take in their own home, workplace, vehicle, coffee shop, brewery, etc. This generates another cycle of “us versus them” and “there they go again.”

Being a survivor of any kind of sexual or domestic violence is a constant struggle. It is a challenge on a daily basis to be faced with different situations that may relate to the trauma that the survivor will never forget and is always hopeful to overcome.

I have no solution to the end of the cycle of violence. I can only challenge us all that in every contact that we have with humans, that we think, “What if they are a survivor? I need to be human. I need to be respectful, responsible, gentle and kind.” Perhaps, this may begin to break down the societal cycle of violence.

Maybe one day it will be a surprise to hear that another powerful male is accused of multiple sexual assaults. One day, maybe we can be on the same page, not continuing to vilify those who speak out after enduring this type of abuse.

Until we can commit to objecting to those who vilify the advocates and survivors, the cycle will continue in the power/ control positions throughout society. It will continue in the borders of the Blue of Facebook, the Tweeting Bird, the photo filters on Instagram, the Disappearing Snap Chatting—for they are also the perpetrators, if you think about it. #MeToo

“I don’t want to talk about it.”

On Oct. 7 at approximately 1:30 a.m. deputies were dispatched to a condo complex on Carpinteria Avenue on a report of a man passed out on the steps of a residence. A woman had called deputies and said that the man was wearing a white and blue sports jersey. Deputies found a man matching the description sitting on the steps of a residence. He said that he did not have a wallet or ID, but the reporting deputy saw a used needle on the steps under the man’s leg.

The deputy had the man stand up and placed him in handcuffs, then found a sunglasses case on the steps behind the man with six unused needles and two spoons—one with suspected heroin residue. Upon walking the man to the patrol car, the deputy found a wallet in the man’s back pocket with credit cards, $46 in cash and an ID and passport that did not belong to him. He was charged with possession of paraphernalia and a wallet that wasn’t his. When the deputy asked the man how he had obtained the wallet, the man reportedly said, “I don’t want to talk about it.”

On Oct. 7 at approximately 9:45 a.m. a deputy responded to a call from Summerland about a man who had just left the fire station with what appeared to be a rifle sticking out of a backpack. The deputy found the man in front of a liquor store and observed the stock of a gun sticking out of the man’s backpack.

Contacting the 39-year-old man, the deputy “advised” him to keep his hands up, and then had him remove his backpack and sit on the ground. The deputy then noticed that firearm was a pellet gun.

He asked the man if he had any other replica guns and if he could search his backpack. The man reportedly said he would rather not have the deputy search his pack, “but based on the circumstances and for officer safety reasons,” the deputy noted, he searched the bag and found a methamphetamine pipe. The man admitted to having meth in his pants pocket, where the deputy also found a hypodermic needle. The man was arrested and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Jelly Bowl hecklers

On Oct. 8 at approximately 5:30 p.m. deputies were dispatched to the Jelly Bowl area on a report of four subjects drinking alcohol and hassling people passing by. A deputy encountered six men and one woman sitting around a picnic table near the bluffs to the east of Jelly Bowl. The reporting deputy recognized one of the men and was “fairly certain” that he had a warrant out for his arrest.

When additional deputies arrived to assist, the reporting deputy placed the man in handcuffs, and dispatch confirmed the man’s active warrant.

The man told one of the people he was with to take possession of his bicycle— which was leaning against a tree—while he was in jail. The reporting deputy noted that he saw a green nylon bag on top of the arrestee’s bike and “incident to arrest” the deputy searched its contents.

Inside the nylon bag he found a used meth pipe and a small “zip type baggie containing crystalline residue” suspected to be methamphetamine. The man’s bike was left with his friend, and the man was transported to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Two straws and two grams

On Oct. 12 at approximately 1:20 a.m. deputies responded to an apartment on 7th Street for a domestic disturbance. The man who called the deputies met them when they arrived, and explained that he was in a verbal argument with his wife.

The 34-year-old man was known to deputies from previous domestic disturbance calls, and he had been advised to call them if he had problems with his wife in the future. The couple’s children—10, 9 and 2 years old—were in the bathroom with their mother.

The man had found a message on his wife’s cellphone that he believed indicated that she was having an affair, and he became upset and began yelling at her. The reporting deputy suspected that the man’s rapid speech and overall demeanor was a result of being under the influence of a central nervous system stimulant (methamphetamine). When asked if he had battered his wife, the man said he had not, and his wife also said that they had not physically harmed each other in the argument. The man’s wife told the reporting deputy that the man had been very emotional that night and that he could not stop talking, which added to the deputy’s suspicion that the man was under the influence of meth.

When the deputy asked the man about the last time he had used meth, he at first denied having used any then admitted to using about three hours previous. The man admitted that he had drugs in his pants pocket, and the deputy asked if he could search the man’s pants (which were in the bathroom). The man consented and the deputy eventually found 2 grams of meth in folded dollar bills as bindles, and two straws for snorting drugs. The man was arrested and taken to Santa Barbara County Jail.

Cutting deals with Caltrans

the summerland shore f r a n d av i s As if that was a possibility. No one, no entity, cuts a deal with Caltrans.

You make requests and hope for the best. Summerland is now on the list for freeway-widening “mitigations.” I find mitigation kind of an irritating term—as if anything could lessen the severity or pain of laying two more traffic lanes in Summerland’s lap.

It can be argued that no community on the South Coast has suffered more from the impacts of the freeway. Summerland had an old historic downtown until the 50s when the freeway buried it. So the town shrank back, gave up a chunk of its history, its unobstructed views, its clean air and quiet, its tranquility.

Summerlanders are daily besieged by the din of traffic, rattle and roar, jake brakes on semis, sirens. The racket races up streets, invades our homes, ears and psyches, permeates our dreams. It is a noxious constant, the unpleasant concession you make to live in an otherwise lovely seaside community.

Then there is the issue of air pollution, exhaust fumes rising from thousands of gas engines speeding through, or idling in, what is essentially our front yard. No one’s bothered to measure the town’s air quality that I know of, but the particulate levels are easy enough to see. Highway dust, grime and grit find their way onto Summerland’s lower streets to coat cars, homes and gardens.

It’s too late to “mitigate” much or any of that, but maybe Caltrans can throw Summerland a sop with a few concessions. The matter was discussed at a Summerland Citizens Association meeting last night (too late to make this column).

But I know the short list of what Summerlanders asked for, and noise-attenuating pavement is a given, a must-have.

Summerlanders would like more and better access to our park and beaches.

The only way to the beach for visitors and residents of this “beachside town” is a narrow siphon at one end of town— the freeway underpass. For many this is a long walk through increasing traffic.

Caltrans could do the community a big favor by creating a pedestrian underpass farther into town.

Since the current freeway underpass is to remain, it definitely needs a face lift.

Essentially Summerland’s gateway, it’s a narrow box of bare concrete and cyclone fencing. A fix wouldn’t cost much—some planting, maybe a mural or attractive signage. Summerland has a lot of creative minds ready to come up with ideas for aesthetic improvements.

Carpinteria got some very nice trails as mitigation measures. Summerland would like one more important trail. It used to be easy to stroll the beach from Lookout Park to Loon Point, but big storms took away so much sand it’s now impossible to get past the huge rock pile (riprap deposited on the beach by Union Pacific) except during very low tides. A trail along the bluff top from the sanitary plant to Loon Point would at least allow access to and along the entire stretch of beach.

Summerlanders would like more and better access to our park and beaches. The only way to the beach for visitors and residents of this “beachside town” is a narrow siphon at one end of town—the freeway underpass.

Although Summerland in particular would benefit from a sound buffer, view-destroying sound walls are out of the question. Currently, a cyclone fence planted with trumpet vine provides a slim barrier between us and the constant stream of rushing cars. A more attractive, stronger barrier such as a low rock wall (no more than four feet) on which plants could grow would be both safer and more effective. Such a wall could help attenuate both noise and dust pollution, which will only increase with more lanes and more traffic.

Moving monuments

At its September meeting, the Summerland Citizens Association voted in favor of moving the World War I memorial from its current location in Memorial Park on Lillie Avenue. The SCA is hoping to find a new home for the nearly 100-year-old monument somewhere in or near Lookout Park.

The land on which the monument sits is owned by the Carpinteria-Summerland Fire Protection District, which has generously agreed to pay for the monument’s removal. The several-ton cement monument inscribed with the names of locals who served and died in the war was moved a dozen or more years ago from its original location next to the railroad tracks. (At the time of the monument’s erection in the 1920’s, the site was the location of Summerland’s old downtown.)

With the fire district’s permission, the empty space adjoining the station was developed as a small memorial park.

After the monument’s placement there, the flagpole atop it was restored, and a big flag flies there every day welcoming people to Summerland. Over time other memorials, rocks with plaques, dedicated stone benches and tables, found places in the shrubbery along the paths surrounding the monument.

The fire district plans to put the fire station and adjoining land on the market to help cover the costs of building a new station somewhere in Summerland.

The decision was made after a professional consulting firm hired by the district verified that the century-old Lillie Avenue station was unsafe and unfit for housing firefighters. Locating a home in Summerland for a new station is still in the works. Meanwhile, the district is looking for safer temporary housing for the firefighters who will be displaced.

One good thing: Appreciating all the small business owners who must perform the daily balancing act between making a living and providing goods and services to their customers. (Something to consider as the holiday shopping season nears.)

Suzanne M. Allen 12/29/1944 – 10/3/2017

Suzanne M. Allen passed away peacefully on Oct. 3, 2017 in her residence.

Susan Fay Vaughan Modene was born on Dec. 29, 1944, in Grand Rapids, Mich., the first of three daughters of George Edward Modene and Lillian Evelyn Vaughan.

While enrolled in a high school work experience program, she worked for the local District Attorney and was immediately drawn to the legal profession where she spent her entire working career until retiring in the mid-1990s. Starting in Los Angeles, she was employed by a law firm for three years before moving to Santa Barbara in 1969. She was certified

as a legal secretary in 1974 and retired as an independent legal assistant. She was a member and president of the Santa Barbara Legal Secretaries Association, California president of Legal Secretaries, Incorporated, a 3,000-member organization, and a charter member and president of Santa Barbara Paralegals Association.

In 1972, she married George H. Allen, founder of the law firm Allen and Kimbell where she worked for nearly 20 years.

Her beloved husband preceded her in death in 2010, after nearly 38 years of marriage.

After retirement, she volunteered as a Santa Barbara driver for 10 years for HELP of Carpinteria where she also served two terms on its Board of Directors. In addition, she served on the Board of Directors of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria.

She was an avid reader, loved cooking, entertaining and travel. In 1986, Suzanne and her husband spent a year traveling in their motor home throughout the United States and Canada.

She is survived by two sisters, Sheila D. Rickey of Midland, Texas and Sharron J. Fredlund of Santa Maria, Calif. and their children.

No services are planned at this time, but donations in her name may be made to any deserving organization of your choice.

Organizers ask that participants bring a pen and “willingness to take an honest look at how you nourish your body and mind.” The purpose of the workshop is to make a “commitment to identifying those foods which produce an allergic reaction and an alcoholic response.” For people with a history of overeating, weight gain, obesity (or dangerous weight-loss like anorexia or bulimia) taking a bite of “alcoholic food” (like taking a drink for an alcoholic), sets up a craving for more and they cannot stop. Festival of Trees finds new home

The Carpinteria Lions Club’s huge annual fundraiser, The Festival of Trees, found itself homeless this year after the Hickey Brothers building at 700 Linden Ave. sold.

But a new partnership between the Lions and the Carpinteria Arts Center will keep the well- loved annual event in downtown Carpinteria and help to fund the remodel of the center.

The 8th Annual Festival of Trees will kick off on Friday, Nov. 24 in its new location at the arts center, 855 Linden Ave. The 16-day event will benefit four nonprofits this year: Carpinteria Arts Center, Friends of the Carpinteria Library, Rancho Allegre Boy Scouts Camp and Carpinteria Movies in the Park.

In its first year, 2009, the Festival of Trees featured 13 Christmas trees decorated by local businesses and nonprofits and raised $14,000 for the Culinary Arts program at Carpinteria High School. The 2016 Festival of Trees, benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Carpinteria, featured 25 trees and raised $26,500 in ticket sales. Tickets are sold throughout the 16 days at $1 each.

The Lions Club is now seeking local individuals, businesses, service organizations and nonprofits for tree sponsorship to showcase creativity and decorating skills.

The trees are donated by the Lions Club and will be set-up inside the building in individual showcase stalls.

Spaces are limited. Those interested should submit a request to Festival of Trees Committee Chair Mike Dawson at 680-9600 or mike@bigredcrane.com no later than Nov. 10.

Fifteen Carpinteria High School seniors put fashion, fitness and finesse on display for a supportive crowd at the Mr. Warrior competition on Oct. 11 at the Carpinteria Middle School auditorium. The annual event determines who will serve as homecoming king and escort the queen at the Friday night football game. Judges selected Jeremy Saito for the honor after the star tennis player impressed the audience with his poise, thoughtfulness and talent.

Captain of the tennis team, saito is also a member of the marching band and works in the Chs cafeteria. he plans to complete college then medical school and said that in 10 years he sees himself as a pediatrician.

The annual Doc Carty Classic drew some of Carpinteria’s finest beach volleyball players to the sand courts at the end of Linden Avenue last weekend for a full day of bump, set, spike. Raising funds for Carpinteria High School’s volleyball program, the king-of-the-beach style tournament gets its name from the late Dr. William Carty, longtime school superintendent and avid volleyball player. His widow, Daphne, and other family members paid a visit to the sunny courts on Oct. 14.

Five teams from Foxwing Fitness/CrossFit Carpinteria traveled to CrossFit Oxnard on Saturday, Oct. 14 to compete in the annual Team Festivus Games. Teams of two athletes competed against CrossFitters from throughout Southern California. The games, promoted as “a competition for the rest of us,” is unique in that it is specifically geared toward novice and intermediate athletes, as well as having divisions for masters (age 45-plus). The rules say, “no fire-breathers,” or higher-level athletes.

The next Festivus Games for individual competitors will take place in April 2018.

Homecoming victory preps Warriors for league

Led by the phenomenal running of Leo Vargas, the Carpinteria High School football team won their second-consecutive game with a 44-12 thumping of Trinity Classical at last Friday’s (Oct. 13) homecoming game at Carpinteria Valley Memorial Stadium.

Vargas’ 315 yards from scrimmage broke the Warriors single-game rushing record of 297 set by Sean Lohse against Moorpark in 1991. “We kind of look at (the record) as a team thing, because when you get that record and you put it up there, it says 2017,” said Warriors coach Rick Candaele. The victory puts Carpinteria over the .500 mark at 4-3, for the first time this season as they prepare to host Malibu in their Frontier League opener tomorrow night.

Vargas scored the game’s first touchdown on a 20yard run with around four minutes to play to put his team up 9-0. It would be one of six for the running back on the night, breaking another school record. He would add a second touchdown on a 2-yard run to make it 16-0 near the 10-minute mark before halftime. Then he would add his third, a 59-yard jaunt to give the Warriors a 23-0 lead at the half.

But in the third quarter, the Knights got on the board on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Phineas Yi to Carson Campuzano to make it a 23-6 game. Defensive lineman Jose Alvarado’s sack and forced fumble set up Vargas’ next touchdown run to put Carpinteria up 30 to 6. Vargas added his fifth touchdown early in the fourth quarter, a 55-yard run to build the lead to 37-6.

With about nine minutes to play, he added his sixth, a 10-yard run to put the Warriors up 44-6.

Trinity Classical tacked on another score via the air, the final tally of the game in Carpinteria’s 44-12 win. The Warriors will most likely be playing without offensive and defensive standout Isaac DeAlba, who injured his ankle on the second play of the game. “We will have to step up,” said Candaele.

The Warrior league opener, and final home game of the regular season, is tomorrow night against Malibu, kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

Cate fights, but falls to Villanova

The Rams dropped a tough 55-50 contest to visiting Villanova on Oct. 14. The loss puts Cate at 3-3 overall and 0-2 in Mt. Pinos League play. The two foes traded scores in the first quarter, with the two Ram touchdowns coming from junior Jack Deardorff.

The first a 15-yard pass to sophomore Thomas Nettesheim, and the second a 40-yard run.

After some lapses on special teams, the lone Cate touchdown in the second quarter came from junior Drew Anastasio’s 1-yard run. At the half, the Rams trailed 35-21.

The second half started in Cate’s favor: a big kickoff return from junior Will Bowlin set up a 2-yard touchdown from Deardorff, and some defensive pressure resulted in a safety that put the score at 35-30. The Rams scored again on another touchdown pass from Deardorff, this time to sophomore Khadim Pouye. The fourth quarter saw Cate fight to close the gap, but never fully come back. The two Ram touchdowns came from senior Luke Beckmen and a pass from Deardorff to Anastasio.

Senior Patrick Armstrong had a nice game defensively for Cate, as did sophomore Callum Casey. “This was a tough one to drop,” said Assistant Coach Dave Soto. “We put ourselves in a nice position to make some plays but just couldn’t quite execute the way we needed. We showed good fight in the second half, but we can’t give good teams extra chances. We’ll get better going into the last two games of our regular season.”

The Rams are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 21 at home against Upland Christian. Kickoff time for that contest will be 2 p.m.

October 11 – The Carpinteria High School boys water polo team took on crosstown rival Cate, pulling away from the Rams in the third quarter by benefitting from a red card for a 10-3 victory. “It was a tight game and really intense,” said Warriors coach Matthew Organista. During the first quarter the Warriors led 2-1, then 5-2 at the half. Seniors Ryan Fly, Jordan Perez and Wyatt Stevenson each had two goals, as did junior Jack Gay. Seniors Brian Kliewer and Connor Van Wingerden each contributed a goal, as did juniors Luke and Solomon Nahooikaika.

October 12 – The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team lost to La Reina in a Tri-Valley League match, 13-5. “No mincing words here; we just played poorly,” said Warriors coach Charles Bryant. “Our one bright spot was Hali Schwasnick/ Diana Gonzalez who continued their strong play winning two sets.” Jessica Lord/ Karla Marin and Jeannette Carrillo/Lexi Persoon each won a set as well. In singles, Sydney Endow won the last set of the day. Carpinteria is now 6-11 overall and 0-8 in the Tri Valley League.

October 17 - The Carpinteria High School girls tennis team played Malibu, losing 11-7 to the Sharks in a Tri-Valley League match. Jessica Lord and Sydney Endow each won two sets and each beat players they had lost to the last time the two schools met.

Jessica Santillan also captured a win, before falling 7-5. In doubles, Amy Perez/Karla Marin won two sets. Lexi Persoon/Vicky Delk got the Warriors last point, having to come back after being down four games to one. “I have enjoyed coaching this team, and we were just a little snake-bit with all of our untimely (and lengthy) injuries; but I am also proud of how well we rose up and continued to battle, especially after our injuries,” said Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant whose team is now 6-12 overall and 0-9 in the TVL.

October 12 – The Cate School cross country team made strides in its second TCAA League meet at Elkins Ranch Golf Course in Fillmore. The girls got back into the race for a CIF playoff spot, moving up three places from the first league meet to finish fifth. Senior Co-captain Isabela Montes de Oca led the team with a 12th place finish in 20:16, the fastest time ever for a Rams girl in Fillmore. Junior Bella Hillyer improved her time by about a minute from last year, finishing 18th in 20:51. “Freshman Jolea Moes continued her remarkable rookie season, placing 33rd in 22:14, and fellow freshman Ariana Sterling toughed out some breathing problems and held on for 47th in 23:19,” said Cate coach Karl Weis.

The male harriers were led by sophomore Tesfa Asmara, who finished 28th in 17:50. The boys finished seventh with the Rams’ next four runners finishing within 12 seconds of each other in the race with junior Josh Shields in 38th in 18:33, senior co-captain Ian MacFarlane in 39th in 18:34, followed by freshman John Rokoine in 43rd in 18:40 and junior Abbner Olivares in 44th in 18:45.

October 12 – The Cate School girls tennis team beat Thacher, 14-4. “It was all Cate from start to finish, with Cate’s starting singles players (Grace Fuss, Jackie Cai, Sydney Burton) dropping just three games in eight combined sets of play,” said Rams coach Trevor Thorpe. In doubles, Carol Cai/Sarah Polowczak won their sets 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, and freshman Fritze Mayer partnered with Janice Ng and Mia Foster to win three, 6-3 sets. “We’ve always had a great rivalry with them and they’re the defending D-four CIF champions, so that makes it (the victory) all the sweeter,” said Thorpe. The Rams are 10-1 and 5-0 in league, aiming for their third consecutive Tri-Valley League title.

October 12 – The Carpinteria High School girls golf team bested St. Bonaventure by a score of 243 to 279. The Warriors’ score of 243 was their team low for the season in the victory over the Seraphs. Seniors Amanda and Mikayla Blair shot 44 and 45 respectively. Classmate Iliana Esquivel shot a 49, and Tahis Alcantar, another senior, stroked a 52 as a farewell to their high school careers. Sophomore Lucy Light posted a 53. “What better way to end the season then with another win,” said Carpinteria coach Reina Rogers whose team finished the regular season with a 12-2 record.

October 12 – The Carpinteria High School girls volleyball team defeated Santa Clara in four sets with match scores of 25-14, 17-25, 25-13 and 25-12 to take home the victory. Jenny Alaniz had 16 kills on the night. Shaya Alexander had 10 kills and five solo blocks, while Crystal Sanchez collected six service aces in the victory. The Warriors’ record is now 6-5 overall and 6-4 in the Frontier League.

October 12 – The Carpinteria High School cross country team competed in the TCAA League Cluster Meet Number-two at the Elkins Ranch Golf Course in Fillmore.

The boys placed fifth among 12 teams. Caleb Classen finished in fourth place with a time of 16:26.02. Other Carpinteria top finishers were: Bernardo Cardona in 27th in 17:48, Dexter Gordon in 32nd in 18:01.35, Luke Nakasone in 40th in 18:46 and Albert Medel in 41st in 18:37.49. Meanwhile, the girls finished in 10th place with top finishers: Shayla Alvarez in 14th in 20:24, Edith Lopez in 39th in 22:52, Emmelly Santillan in 56th in 23:54, Kara Chatterton in 62nd in 24:42 and Alejandra Alvarez in 63rd in 24:44.

The Carpinteria Valley Girls Softball League (CVGSL) will hold early bird signups on Saturday, Oct. 21, from noon to 3 p.m. at Pizza Man Dan’s Restaurant, 699 Linden Ave. Girls ages 5 to 14 are eligible, and no experience is necessary. The season starts at the end of February. Road games are scheduled, and the farthest will be held in either Santa Paula or Fillmore.

The CVGSL was founded in 1999, and provides a safe, fun and supportive platform for girls to learn important life lessons. Volunteer opportunities are available. Coaching clinics will take place prior to the season, usually in cooperation with the Boys & Girls Club. Mighty Might: Ace Bermudez, #44, is a first-year player and is starting offensive guard and defensive tackle. Bermudez had a touchdown-saving tackle because he never gave up on the play and preserved the shutout win. Mighty Mights won 20-0 last weekend.

Bantam: Joel “Vacay” Robles, #9, is a first-year player. Robles plays quarterback and safety. He played with heart and true Warrior spirit, battling through to the end.

He had five tackles and two batted balls. Bantams were defeated 0-32 last weekend.

Sophomore: Dominic Castillo, #20, is a returning player at corner back and safety. Castillo has been key this season, working really hard at his positions.

He had an amazing game Saturday, stopping ball carriers before the goal line. Sophomores were defeated 0-20 last weekend.

Junior: Dioselin “Limes” Lemus, #79, is a secondyear player. She is one of the hardest hitting and most dedicated, doing everything she is asked. With a knee injury in the last game, she was devastated she couldn’t finish with her team. Lemus showed true Warrior Spirit. Juniors were defeated 0-34 last weekend.

Senior: Aaron Cardona, #89, is the senior team’s starting tight end and defensive end. Cardona is a first-year player that has improved throughout the season. His attitude and understanding of the game made him versatile on both offense and defense. He also was the kicker. Seniors were defeated 0-32 last weekend.

Does she want to stay married? Do they need parenting help? Listen to your son, suggest he get help but don’t criticize, just be extra loving to the children.

Dear Donnie, My husband’s father just moved into a retirement home in Florida after his wife died. He is miserable and claims that the only things people talk about are pains, pills and passing on. He is a retired chemistry professor and wants stimulating conversations. We are so far away and don’t know what to do. There are so many nice places where we live and we’d love to spend more time with him. Should we move him closer to us?

If you find a suitable place, wait a while and if he is still unhappy, send him the information. Most places have lots of interesting activities, and residents will find kindred spirits. A talk with the management might help.

They can arrange more suitable tablemates. Best to give him time to adjust.

If he is still unhappy in six months, then visit him and talk about moving him closer to you.

Merv Mullikin visited his son Jeff and his family in Colorado last August. Jeff grew up and attended schools in Carpinteria, graduated from Carpinteria High School and now owns a business in Denver. The Mullikins enjoyed sightseeing, both in Denver and Boulder. In Georgetown, Colo., the family took a train ride into the surrounding mountains and toured an old silver mine. Their explorations took them 900 feet into a mine shaft where the temperatures were very cold, the family reported having a great experience of American history. CVN stows away on a riverboat cruise

Barry and Pam Enticknap went down to New Orleans with their Coastal View News and enjoyed a cruise on the Mississippi riverboat Natchez. The only steam-powered riverboat still operating on the Mississippi in the Big Easy, the Natchez offers daily cruises (hurricanes permitting) departing from the Toulouse Street wharf behind the JAX Brewery in the French Quarter.

When you purchase a home that is part of a Home Owners Association (HOA), you agree to live by certain rules set up by that HOA. The HOA usually charges a monthly fee and in exchange will provide the homeowners with certain services such as exterior maintenance or access to a community pool. HOA living is ideal for some and simply an added expense for others; this depends on both the particular HOA and the needs of the homeowners themselves. Below, I will discuss some of the advantages and disadvantages of HOA living as well as some important questions to ask if you are shopping for a home within an HOA. An HOA is usually set up by a real estate developer in order to manage a group of homes or condominiums. This association is given the power to enforce the Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CC&Rs) of the community. In order to belong to the HOA (and purchase a home with the HOA), the homeowner will need to pay its dues, which vary depending on the community.

Before purchasing a home in an HOA it is critical to read over the CC&R’s carefully. It is important to make sure you can live by the rules. There could be restrictions on pet size, barbecuing, parking, visitors and even what color curtains you can put on your windows.

If you are using a loan to purchase your home within an HOA, it is likely that your lender will research the financial stability of the HOA and determine it has a large- enough reserve fund to continue to properly maintain the facilities it manages. It is important for potential owners to ask if the HOA has any upcoming assessments for homeowners. HOA’s use assessments to fund major projects and repairs within the community.

Your monthly association fees will also be assessed by your lender and added into your monthly mortgage expense, so its critical to add it into your calculations.

HOA fees in Carpinteria can vary, and some can be as much as $500 per month.

While paying a fee to abide by certain rules may not be ideal for some, there are some awesome advantages to HOA living as well.

An HOA will help you mitigate issues

with neighbors. If you have a neighbor with a continuously barking dog or one who is loud at all hours of the night and constantly throwing parties, your HOA can address those issues for you as there are typically rules in place for noise and nuisance. It could be a major relief to not have to address this on your own and to have the power of the HOA behind you.

HOAs keep common areas and home exteriors well maintained. Not all HOAs provide exterior maintenance, but many are responsible for roofs, exterior siding and common area yard space. These are things that can be a major burden to homeowners, and relinquishing worries of repair and maintenance is a great advantage.

HOA rules and regulations are generally set up to deter nuisance and create quiet, pleasant and comfortable surroundings for their residents. That, in combination with some of the amenities an HOA can offer such as a pool, clubhouse and tennis courts can make HOA living a major luxury. However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so I always suggest that my buyers read through the rules carefully and ask any questions they have before you saying OK to living in an HOA.
