CVN awarded grant from Google News Initiative

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Google News Initiative launched the global Journalism Emergency Relief Fund to support small and medium-sized news organizations producing original journalism for local communities. After reviewing 12,000 applications from more than 100 eligible countries, Coastal View News has been awarded $5,000 in their first wave of announcements.

“We really needed this boost at a time when advertising revenue is down and all of our local businesses are suffering,” said CVN publisher Michael VanStry. “It’s also gratifying to be recognized for the work we do in continuing Carpinteria Valley’s 118-year tradition of a free and independent press.”

County offers free Covid-19 testing for all

Santa Barbara County is now offering free community-based testing for Covid-19 and everyone is eligible to apply. To make an appointment for testing at one of the three sites, contact Santa Barbara County Call Center at (833) 688-5551 or (888) 6341123 or visit lhi.care/covidtesting. Everyone is eligible to apply for a free screening.

Seacoast lights up blue to honor essential workers

The Seacoast Village HOA and residents shined a blue light at their entrance on Thursday, May 14, as part of the “Light It Blue” campaign that called on cities across the nation to shine blue lights to honor essential workers during the Covid-19 crisis.

“Many of us can only imagine how difficult it really is ‘in the trenches,’” said George Lehtinen of Seacoast Village HOA, “and we wish them all the strength and courage to carry on through this seemingly never-ending nightmare. We hope the blue lights also serve as a reminder to all of us that we need to all do our parts and to act responsibly to protect ourselves and to protect each other.”

Memorial Day ceremony to be screened on TVSB

As a result of the current statewide “stay at home” order, the public will not be invited to the Memorial Day Ceremony held each Memorial Day at the Carpinteria Public Cemetery District. The ceremony will still take place, however, and will be filmed by TV Santa Barbara and broadcast in the days that follow on Cox channel 21.

“It is with much regret that we have to make this announcement,” said Mike Damron, manager of Carpinteria Public Cemetery District. “For years, the community looks forward to and participates in this very important event. We will still honor all of our service men and women who have passed, along with reading the names of the brave men who gave their lives in the service to our country,” added Damron.

Clyde Freeman and Bob Stokes of the Carpinteria Lions Club, which organizes the event, said they’re “hoping that Carpinterians will pause for a few minutes at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 25, and give their thoughts to those who gave their lives for our country.”

The city of Carpinteria website will post broadcast times for the videotaped ceremony.

Federal assistance trickles down to the local economy

City of Carpinteria passes face-covering ordinance

On Monday, May 19, carpinteria joined several other california cities by enacting face-covering requirements in an effort to slow the transmission of covid-19. The new regulations come at a time when business and travel restrictions are beginning to loosen, and locals and visitors are expected to cross paths more frequently. By requiring face coverings, the city of carpinteria hopes to keep residents and visitors safe and keep the community on track for recovery, according to a statement from the city of carpinteria.

“We want to stress that face coverings are not a substitute for other protective measures, nor an exemption from other rules on social distancing and gathering,” said City Manager Dave Durflinger. “To continue successfully battling this virus, it’s imperative that we remain vigilant.

We cannot give up on hand washing, routinely cleaning high-touch surfaces and maintaining six-foot distancing without risking setbacks.”

The virus can be transmitted from person to person through breathing, speaking, coughing and sneezing, but the risk is reduced by wearing a face covering.

The national centers for Disease control, the california Department of Health

and the Santa Barbara county Health Department all recommend wearing face coverings, and cities such as Goleta, Santa Barbara and Ojai have implemented facecovering requirements.

The new ordinance, which was unanimously approved by the carpinteria city council and is effective immediately, requires all workers and members of the public to wear a face covering while present at any business allowed to be open. This includes standing in line to enter or transact business with one of these businesses. The requirement does not apply to people who work in small offices where there is physical separation from others.

The ordinance also recommends face coverings in all other public settings where social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.

Businesses are responsible for refusing service and access to anyone not wearing a face covering, and they must provide free face coverings to their workers.

The city expects members of the public to voluntarily comply with the new requirements, but violations may be enforced against non-compliant individuals and businesses, stated city representatives.

The federal government’s roll-out of the Payroll Protection Program had a rocky start, with many larger corporations appearing to have benefitted from the assistance at the expense of the smaller businesses that the program was designed to assist. recent articles in the New York Times and from the Brookings institution spotlight how other nations focused more on supporting businesses, with fewer individual pay-outs via unemployment claims.

“The PPP idea is simple,” Joshua Gotbaum wrote on the Brookings institution website May 4: “rather than have businesses lay off tens of millions of people until the covid-19 shutdowns are over and customers come back, the federal government will pay businesses to keep them on payroll for a couple of months whether they work or not.” Gotbaum added, “The alternative is worse: joblessness, hopelessness—and governments paying hundreds of billions of dollars in unemployment benefits anyway.”

The New York Times reported May 20, “Much of the rest of the world— including Australia, Britain, canada, France, Germany and South korea—has followed one strategy on coronavirus stimulus. Governments have temporarily paid the salaries of workers in order to prevent millions of layoffs.” However, the complex response in the U.S. has resulted in millions of unemployed workers, many of whom also lost their health care insurance.

“The stimulus bill that House Democrats passed last week,” the New York Times stated, “includes a new paycheck subsidy program, similar to those in other countries. For businesses that have lost substantial revenue, it would cover—as grants, not loans—as much as 80 percent of payroll costs, up to $60,000 per worker in annual salary. The policy would be expensive, yet still cheaper than the previous stimulus plans.”

Locally, Montecito Bank & Trust officer Ben Scott provided some insight to his institutions’ involvement in distributing PPP funds. “Wherever you have a local banking relationship that is the simplest place to start,” he began. “You know the

bank and its bankers, the bank knows you, your business, your financial history and should be better positioned to facilitate the review of eligibility and to collect the documentation required.”

Montecito Bank & Trust has processed over 1,300 applications for PPP funds from clients and non-clients in recent months. “From the beginning, we believed our goal as the largest community bank on the central coast was to secure as much funding for as many businesses and employees within the central coast communities as possible,” Scott said.

Obituaries

Mary Ayala Ranson 5/22/1932 – 5/9/2020

Mary Ayala Ranson was born to Angel Ayala and Nellie (Pico Romero) Ayala in Ventura, California.

A descendant of one of the soldiers who helped to found the Santa Barbara Presidio in 1751, she was proud of her early California heritage.

Dry farmers in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, the Ayala family moved frequently in order to be near their crops.

Mom tagged after her mother in the fields, and “helped” cook meals for the work crew. At night, the two retired to an enclosure made of hay bales, then snuggled into blankets and fell asleep under the stars.

In the 1930s the family settled in Carpinteria, where Mom attended grade school and high school. As a kid, she hung out at the beach with friends and worked at the packing house sorting lemons. Mom had a knack for drawing and filled a notebook with pencil sketches of Hollywood starlets, and a few drawings of family and friends.

In high school, Mom met Luis Goena.

They married in 1949 and had six children. Most of their married life was spent at the Polo Fields, where Louie was Caretaker. Mom liked to sew and made most of her daughters’ childhood clothing. She cooked, cleaned and canned foods from the garden, hosted fun birthday parties, and stenciled snowflakes on the windows at Christmas time. When it rained, she played records and gave the kids pots and pans to bang on while marching through the house, which was hung with the laundry that had been pulled indoors out of the rain. She was a patient woman.

When her marriage ended, Mom and her children moved to the outer reaches of Santa Barbara, which at that time felt a hundred miles away from family and friends in Carpinteria. Mom went to work at Applied Magnetics, then Delco.

She became a highly skilled solderer and contributed to the building of Lunar Rovers. Being a single Mom who worked full time while raising six young children was a hard thing to do. Mom cooked us

breakfast before leaving for work and made dinner every night. She kept our clothes clean and the house and the yard tidy. And she did it gracefully.

In the 1970s, while on an extended visit with her daughter, Cecilia, in Colorado, Mom met Robert LeMoyne Ranson on a Friday night at a country dance place in Colorado Springs. After their first dance, Bob was smitten. Less than a year later, Mom and Bob were married, and they began their happy, 30-year marriage in Pueblo, Bob’s hometown. Bob was a hardworking tire store manager, and Mom took care of the house. She wallpapered, painted, shoveled snow, made curtains and tablecloths, and every year grew huge patches of Cosmos along their sidewalks. Mom joined the YMCA where she met a great group of ladies, with whom she became fast friends. They named themselves The Penguins. They swam, hit the casino in Cripple Creek, had lunch together and celebrated each other’s birthdays.

In 2004, Bob left the tire business and the two retired in Santa Paula, California, “a right size town,” with wide streets and tree-lined sidewalks. Four years later, Bob passed away. To be close to her children, Mom moved to Santa Barbara. She spent her last 12 years at Villa Caridad, where she attended the morning rosary, lunches and various other happenings, completed the daily crossword puzzle, listened to Coast to Coast on the radio every night, researched her genealogy in the computer lab, and enjoyed visits from family and lunches out. Mom counted herself lucky to become close friends with her neighbor Mary Castaneda, who looked in on Mom every day.

Mom died peacefully of natural causes, 13 days short of her 88th birthday.

Predeceased by her parents and three brothers, Gene, Bill, and Eddie, and her granddaughter Rosalind Adams, left to cherish her memory are her children, Cecilia (Adams) Berry, Linda Goena Caldwell, Cynthia Goena, David Goena, Chris (Diane Bury) Goena, Mark (Linda Noel) Goena, and daughter in law Jill (Rob) Palmer; grandchildren Jake (Mandy) Goena, Vivian Goena, Damien Pearson, Marisa (Garrett) Gamache, Calisto Caldwell, Alex Goena, Louie Caldwell and Ana Goena; great-grandchildren McKayla, Calise and Mila Rose Goena, and Juniper and Owen Gamache; cousin Carmie Ryan; sisters-in-law Dolores Ayala, Virginia Ayala and Virginia Tryon, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Thank you to Dr. Omlid and the staff at Cliff View Terrace and Mission Terrace, where Mom spent the last few months of her life.

A private burial took place on May 14 at the Carpinteria Cemetery. A celebration of Mom’s life will be planned for a future date.

Jorge “Georgie” Antonio Robles passed away on March 31, 2020, after suffering a major stroke at home on March 29 with his partner of 10 years, Linda (Signor) Perreault, at his side.

Jorge was born on Jan. 12, 1961, in Los Angeles, to parents Jesus and Maria Robles, who were born in Mexico. He is preceded in death by his brother, Jesus Pedro Robles (Jesse), who passed away on Oct. 28, 2019.

He is survived by his son, Nicholas Robles (Deanna), grandson, Jonathan, and his daughter, Celine Robles. Jorge also leaves behind numerous family members in Arizona. He’s also survived by his partner, Linda Perreault and her daughter, Tessa Perreault (Ben Regan, fiancé).

Jorge grew up in Los Angeles and moved to Carpinteria in 2007. Always a

Jorge Antonio Robles 1/12/1961 – 3/31/2020

hard worker, he started out very young working with his grandmother selling women’s clothing at the swap meet. He then began working in the 1980s with his father at the Forum, and then on to a longtime career at General Telephone, ultimately working in the construction industry—most recently, with Casa Construction, based in Santa Barbara.

“Georgie” will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He had a way of “making everyone’s day.” He was an amazing man who was always ready to lend an ear to listen and a big smile to share. He was a genuine man to embrace. He was always ready to talk about life’s lessons. On his 59th birthday in January, he checked off one of his top bucket list items, skydiving! Mostly he loved his family, friends, Coors Lite, music, sports, a good Bloody Mary, detailing cars, road trips to Laughlin, playing softball, and all children and animals. He is also survived by his one-year-old rescue three-legged kitten, Shelby (“his baby”).

Good jokes, countless laughs and a zest for life that is hard to match—Georgie was always rich in the things that mattered in life.

He keeps telling me from Heaven, that I am loved and cared for. Jorge, you will be missed forever.

The family wishes to thank all those who expressed their condolences to them during this difficult time.

There will be a memorial announced in the future, when it is possible to get everyone together to celebrate Georgie’s life. Cheers!

Pay for beach parking

For the last several weekends, we have had two-hour and no parking in the Beach Neighborhood. This reinforces the fact that we have a beach parking problem, and that we do not need a huge, luxury train hotel that will add further congestion in that area.

The developer says that the hotel will generate $500,000 annually with rent and Transit Occupancy Taxes. Of course, this means full capacity every day.

If the city wants more money, why not scrap the hotel and charge for parking in the beach parking lot? All beach areas charge for parking—113 spots at $2/ hour for eight hours would generate over $670,000 a year. No construction and we retain our open space.

Also, charge for parking on Linden below the tracks, on Sandyland, Ash and other streets with automatic ticket kiosks and parking stickers for residents. Lots to think about.

No parking lot south of the railroad tracks

I just reviewed the drawings for the proposed hotel at the train station parking lot. I am very concerned about the new change from the original plan to now direct traffic over the railroad tracks to Dorrance Way for access to a new parking lot with 83 parking spaces on Elm. I have lived here over 35 years and have seen the impact of more traffic on these narrow streets with no sidewalks.

We only have a stop sign on Dorrance Way and Elm because I was instrumental in leading the efforts of having it installed in 1994, and this was to help slow down drivers. We also have a lot of foot traffic and most of the time they have to walk in the middle of the street. Adding more

traffic for a parking lot is not the solution.

Impotent signage

I refrained from typing this until the weekend was over. Another sunny weekend, another mess. New signs are impotent without enforcement. Cars were parked on our streets all day long and I saw one towed. City beach lot closures have inspired visitors to explore our neighborhoods. We had overnight campers camp next to the “No Camping” signs.

People raced around looking for parking, stop signs be-damned and speed records broken. It reminded me of Avofest parking urgency.

Apparently, if you are homeless, public alcohol is permitted. Just throw your stuff on the ground too as the trash cans are far away and inconvenient. Non-smoking city? Well, it is a nice sign of a nice sentiment. Bikes all over sidewalks. Who comes to a complete stop at stop signs?

On our street, racing cars cut the corner of a blind turn. You can make great time on our block if you just cut it short!

Let’s not even mention the beach packed with visitors who haven’t been informed about social distancing. Enforcement is the key element to posting “rules.” A final thought: visitors did not seem to be patronizing our local businesses. Just a burger stand. We conduct ourselves within protocol while our visitors express their “rights.” One more thank you.... Thank you to Monday and fog.

• Containment capacity: At least 15 contract tracers per 100,000 residents.

• Ability to temporarily house at least 15 percent of county residents experiencing homelessness.

• Hospital capacity: county or regional capacity to accommodate a minimum surge of 35 percent.

• Vulnerable populations: skilled nursing facility must have more than a 14-day supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) on hand for staff and ongoing procurement from non-state supply chains.

• Triggers for adjusting modifications: metrics that serve as triggers for either slowing the pace through Stage II or tightening modifications.

The following businesses will be allowed to reopen after the state accepts our attestation that we meet the criteria, and after the business fills out a self-attestation online (which will be available after the state accepts our own attestation) that they are able to meet our requirements: • “Destination retail” including shopping malls and swap meets • Personal services, limited to car washes and tanning facilities • Office-based businesses (telework is still strongly encouraged) • Dine-in restaurants (our county is working on a program to allow restaurants to spread out beyond their own footprint to have adequate distancing) The guidance that businesses will have to attest to in order to reopen can be found in our county’s Reopening in Safe Environment (RISE) Guide—available online at recoverysbc.org/the-rise-guide and starting on page 42—including links to state guidance and our own local guidance laid out there by sector.

This is important: if you own or are in a leadership position at a business that is not yet included in those allowed to reopen, I highly encourage you to get very familiar with the guidelines and prepare your place of business now so you can quickly reopen when the time comes.

While this is exciting news for some, I also want to acknowledge that this is anxiety-producing for others who may fear that we are taking steps too soon.

Personally, I think this is good news for everyone.

Governor Newsom and the California Department of Public Health have been very cautious in their handling of this pandemic. He took swift and comprehensive action early which was critical in us getting an early handle on the virus and

keeping California’s infection and death rate per 100,000 residents substantially lower than most other states.

I hope that those who have supported his approach to the pandemic thus far will have faith that the governor and the CDPH would not have altered their reopening requirements unless it was in the public health interest. Our Santa Barbara County Public Health director and officer also agree with the criteria the state laid out. You can watch their presentation at the most recent Board of Supervisors meeting online.

Additionally, our board adopted the county’s RISE Guide, which lays out the guidance and expectations for businesses and other entities if they are to reopen at the appropriate time. It’s a scientific based plan that was led by medical professionals in coordination with local business leaders and economic stakeholders.

In the opening letter from the medical professionals who drafted the plan, they acknowledge “the long-term health and safety of our residents requires us to safely and methodically reopen our communities while protecting vulnerable populations and ensuring the readiness of our healthcare system.”

Our country—and our county—has experienced pervasive income inequality for decades and it has had a substantial effect on the health of those living in poverty. The coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated this and shone a light on the devastating effects of allowing such poverty to exist to those who have not experienced the impacts firsthand. Both the LA and the New York Times have reported extensively on this subject.

A shameful fact is that “just stay at home” is a privilege that most people living in poverty—or on the cusp of poverty—just don’t have, even with government assistance. That being said, those that do have the privilege to stay home or work from home without economic hardship or consequence, should absolutely continue to do that to the extent possible, and should also visit local businesses as they begin to reopen, at a safe distance and wearing facial covering to protect the workers and others.

We have been extraordinarily effective in flattening the curve in keeping our local coronavirus pandemic manageable because the public has voluntarily followed the rules. We have not had enough law enforcement personnel available to force folks to stay at home or to stay six feet apart when they are not home.

People have chosen to do this for the greater good. I have absolute faith in this community to continue to keep this up even as we begin to reopen segments of our economy. We can keep each other safe—both by preventing the spread of the coronavirus and by doing what we can as individuals to reverse the impacts of life-damaging poverty.

Understanding why Carpinteria’s water costs what it does

First, I’d like to say I’ve heard from many Carpinterians that they are concerned about the proposed water rate increase especially during the current pandemic. I want you all to know that, we hear your concerns and are working on a solution. On May 27, the Board of Directors will consider options to delay the implementation of the proposed rate increases. I also wanted to bring up another aspect of the rates that is often a point of discussion among customers I speak to. We hear often that the district’s water rates are high. I acknowledge that they seem high compared to other areas in the state, however there are sound reasons.

The south coast of Santa Barbara County is an amazing place to live but a few of the things that make it so wonderful are the same things that make it expensive to maintain a water supply. The geographic distance from major cities, the lower population density and the rural nature of Carpinteria requires that we import water from as far away as Northern California to reliably supply water to Carpinteria Valley. In fact, imported water generally flows from north to south in Santa Barbara County, so Carpinteria is at the end of the pipeline.

In addition to the $40 million in water infrastructure that we manage locally, there are hundreds of millions of dollars in water infrastructure that we are participants in (pay for), including the State Water Project, Santa Barbara’s Cater Treatment Plant and the Cachuma Project.

We participate in these projects to make certain that our water supply is sufficient and reliable. Without these systems in place, we would have run out of water during the drought many times over. In fact, on average the total water demand in Carpinteria is twice that of what can be supplied from local water supplies.

In addition to Carpinteria’s location, the lower population density makes it challenging to pay for all the costs necessary to ensure this reliable water supply.

Unlike areas where large populations can share the costs of hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of infrastructure, our area is less populated, which makes shouldering these expenses tougher.

Our water rates reflect the cost of securing and operating a safe-to-drink, exceptionally reliable water system. In fact, over the last 10 years, we have been tested in almost every way including extreme recession, extreme drought, wildfires, floods, debris flows, power outages and now a pandemic. During all these events, the Carpinteria Valley had water and the district was able to provide continuous service to its customers.

The district has set its priority to make certain that Carpinteria’s water will be exceptionally reliable and safe for the Carpinteria Valley. This includes decisions in the distant past to participate in the construction of the Cachuma Project, a U.S. Bureau of Reclamation project constructed in the 1950s and operated and maintained by the four South Coast member agencies, Goleta Water District, city of Santa Barbara, Montecito Water District and Carpinteria Valley Water District.

The district funds approximately 11 percent of the $11 million annual cost or $1.2 million to operate and maintain the project and receives approximately 2813 acre feet per year. The district also funds a portion of the operation and maintenance of the city of Santa Barbara’s Cater Treatment Plant because approximately 3000-acre feet of Carpinteria’s annually imported water from Lake Cachuma and other projects must be treated through a conventional water treatment plant to meet drinking water standards set by state regulations. The district pays approximately $1.3 million per year to have its water treated at Cater Treatment Plant.

Finally, the district also has a 2200-acre foot per year share of the State Water Project that it can turn to when necessary.

Although importing this water from the SWP is substantially more expensive than local groundwater and Cachuma Project water, it is an important part of our water

Covid-19 cases tally 1,517 On May 19, Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (PHD) reported 11 deaths among 1,517 people who tested positive for Covid-19.

Across the county, 11,644 people have been tested for Covid-19. Of the 1,517 confirmed cases, 575 are still active, 880 have fully recovered and nine are pending updates. Health care workers make up 72 of the total number of cases. There are currently 28 people hospitalized for Covid-19 related illnesses, of which 11 are in the ICU. In the South County communities of Montecito, Summerland and Carpinteria, there are 23 confirmed cases and no deaths. Lompoc’s federal prison has 971 cases, including two deaths. Other cities showing steady rises include Santa Maria with 229 cases, including two deaths; city of Lompoc with 102, including two deaths; and Santa Barbara with 77 cases and one death. Goleta has 11 confirmed cases and two deaths.

While most cases of Covid-19 exhibit mild or moderate symptoms, the county’s growing case numbers and first deaths from Covid-19 underscore the urgent need for all residents to take extra steps to protect those who are particularly vulnerable to developing more serious illness, including elderly persons and those with underlying health conditions, such

as, diabetes, cancer, immunodeficiency and asthma.

Club SCene Girls Inc. to reopen June 1 with social distancing measures

As the county and state begin to lift restrictions, Girls Inc. of Carpinteria announced it will reopen its doors on Monday, June 1, in accordance with state and licensing guidelines. The organization plans to open for half days, Monday through Friday, and will have a limited capacity, accepting a total of 20 participants whose parents work in an essential industry as determined at the time of opening.

“The health and safety of our Girls Inc. families and our staff remain our top priority—and our team has been thoroughly preparing the facility with guidance from the state and CDC,” said Jamie Collins, executive director of Girls Inc. of Carpinteria. “We look forward to welcoming our girls back to the campus and stand ready to deliver enriching programming during this critical time, so parents can return to work with the peace of mind knowing their children are being taken care of.”

Girls Inc. will put in place social and physical distancing guidelines to ensure the safety of every child, family and staff member, including: reduced operating hours of 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday; reduced classroom sizes of two staff to 10 kids; social distancing will be practiced as much as possible; all staff members will have access to masks that will be worn throughout the day; classrooms will be reserved for facilitators and participants only; drop off will be drivethrough to limit contact with parents; pick up locations will rotate and masks will be required; daily health screenings and temperature checks will be administered for all participants; high-touch surfaces will be regularly disinfected; hand sanitation areas will be set up throughout the campus; and the facility will be routinely cleaned. Additionally, a comprehensive list of the most effective health and safety practices will be provided to all families.

Girls Inc. is seeking donations to help fund scholarships for program participants, particularly for those whose family members may have been furloughed or laid off during the pandemic.

In a recent Morning Rotary Club meeting, Club President Kim Fly surprised Les Esposito and Don Hall with Golden Bear recognition awards—the club’s highest service award. As the liaison to Morning Rotary members and especially with the Guatemalan Chapter, Esposito corresponds regularly and takes care of their membership details. Don Hall, director of the Carpinteria Boys and Girls Club, oversees the weekly Wednesday grocery bag distributions of over 450 bags of food, supervises bag packing, coordinates volunteers and manages a double line of cars stretching from the State Park at Palm Avenue to the Carpinteria Children’s Project.

Natural History Notes

The goals of Carpinteria Sealwatch are public education and protection of the seals—primarily by education. In normal years, January through May, volunteers meet on average 30,000 people from all over the United States and the world in the blufftop viewing area. It’s a great opportunity to share information about harbor seal biology as well as natural history of the Santa Barbara Channel. Visitors are often thrilled by newborn pups, seal antics, dolphins and whales passing by, along with numerous bird species. Carpinteria is extraordinarily fortunate to have this unusual public resource.

Disturbances

Three beach walkers with a dog, and a woman doing yoga exercises in the sanctuary, caused major flushing of the seals. A truck on the pier also scared several seals.

When Covid-19 shut down normal operations for just about all businesses and organizations, the United Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Barbara County collaborated with the Foodbank of Santa Barbara to turn their clubs into distribution centers.

Soon after, the club launched its “Whatever It Takes” challenge of raising $250,000 to help underwrite the costs of their food distributions and online programming for the months of April, May and June. UBGC has announced that they surpassed their goal for a total of $266,000, with contributions from the Jeff and Judy Henley and the Gerald W. Fackler Charitable Remainder Trust, who gave an initial $250,000.

In two months, UBGC has distributed food that impacted 75,603 individuals between the six communities of Lompoc, Buellton/Solvang, Goleta, Santa Barbara and Carpinteria. The clubs also launched virtual programming for their club members: “The goal is that our members can stay engaged socially, as well as get the help they need with their homework,” said UBGC CEO Michael Baker.

UBGC’s “Lend a Socially-Distant Hand” campaign has also been successful in reaching skilled contractors to improve club locations ahead of reopening. Locksmiths, roofers, artists and handymen have donated services, saving the organization thousands of dollars. UBGC is still looking for a volunteer electrician and retired or current teachers who would like to help with virtual homework help.

The Lynda Fairly Carpinteria Arts Center is offering a free painting class on Saturday, May 30, at 2 p.m. The first 10 Carpinteria residents to register will get free art supplies, which normally cost $20, and financial aid is available for supplies as well.

Students may also use their own materials.

Professional artist Tammy Gilkey—who holds an M.A. in media design and works as an instructional visual designer for LinkedIn Learning—will teach the class. Students of all levels will be guided step-by-step to paint a Linden Avenue street scene.

Gilkey is a digital and fine artist who began her art career working with high-risk youth teaching art and art therapy.

The class is free, but donations are welcome. Pre-registration is required at carpinteriaartscenter.org.

Additionally, the Arts Center’s annual poetry awards will be given virtually via Zoom on Monday, May 25, at 5 p.m., for poems written on the theme of “gratitude.” For more information, call (805) 684-7789.

Local author to donate book sales

Carpinteria author Van Fleisher will donate sales from his two books, “Final Notice” and “Final Act,” to the 93013 Fund in support of local efforts to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Anyone who has experienced the sting of being slighted socially based on their age will appreciate the premise of Fleisher’s first book, “Final Notice”: A watch has been invented that accurately calculates the wearer’s remaining lifespan. With literally nothing left to lose, what would people do if they knew they had 10 days left to live? One protagonist brings some much-delayed reckoning with ageism at the barrel of a gun.

Inspired by his own father’s experience of feeling irrelevant in his old age (despite having served in WWII and spending a year and a half in a German POW camp), Fleisher said he had two objectives with his books, “to entertain and call attention to problems.” And the problems Fleisher addresses are the treatment of elders and the proliferation of guns in America. He’s “frustrated by this country’s approach to guns,” and specifically, the “NRA’s push” for ever- more unrestricted access to firearms.

While some vehemently disagree with Fleisher on his views about gun control, he has received approximately 500 reviews on his Amazon page. Fleisher began writing seriously after retiring from international consulting work. The many long flights he took had him reading a lot of thrillers from airport book stores, and the genre fired his imagination to come up with his own take. In his second book, “Final Act,” Russian agents lure those with a short time left to live to commit assassinations in exchange for financial compensation that will take care of their families after they’re gone.

Having seen sales of his books increase in this period of shelter-in-place orders, the self-published author wants to donate proceeds. While there is no means of donating earnings directly from Amazon, Fleisher will take orders via email at van@ vanfleisher.com, and donate proceeds after expenses. The author will sign each book ordered.

How to apply for relief assistance for undocumented immigrants

California is providing a one-time assistance to undocumented adults who are not eligible for other forms of assistance, including unemployment insurance or the stimulus check due to their immigration status. The Disaster Relief Assistance for Immigrants (DRAI) project is administered by the California Department of Social Services. In Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, individuals can receive assistance with their applications from the non-profit organization Mixteco Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP).

Individuals may begin applying for DRAI assistance on May 18. Assistance will be available until the funding is spent or until June 30, 2020, at the latest.

Applicants will be considered on a first come, first served basis. Applicants may only seek assistance with the nonprofit organization(s) assigned to their county of residency, in Carpinteria, that is MICOP. Funding is limited, and disaster relief application services and assistance are not guaranteed. MICOP shared with Coastal View News an FAQ to help explain what the new program is and who qualifies.

What is DRAI?

Professionals take on new job roles during crisis

You can still find librarian Blanca Ramirez at the Carpinteria Branch Library on Mondays and Tuesdays, but the rest of the week she’s now working at a homeless shelter in Santa Barbara.

Ramirez is like many local professionals who have kept their jobs, but not their job descriptions during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The transition wasn’t difficult for Ramirez, who was eager to help during the crisis. Her new role is at a non-congregate shelter for asymptomatic and high-risk individuals experiencing homelessness that was set up by Santa Barbara County in order to mitigate Covid-19 contact. “I welcome new guests to the site,” she said. “I help them settle into the shelter and complete their intake paperwork.”

On arrival, guests receive a symptom/fever check and Ramirez lets them know to wear a face covering and practice social distancing. She then helps them fill out intake paperwork and assigns them a room. “Throughout my shift, I’m often responding to guests’ questions and concerns such as scheduling essential trips and fulfilling supply requests,” she said.

“One individual cried while working on the intake form and let me know how grateful he was for the opportunity to shelter at the site,” said Ramirez. “He told me he didn’t want to go back to living on the streets after this is over.” During their stay at the shelter, guests are connected with a Housing Navigator to help develop or update a housing plan upon discharge, said Ramirez.

Working in customer service at the Carpinteria Library helped prepare Ramirez for working at a homeless shelter. She noted, “I have to make people feel safe and cared for while also coming up with solutions to different problems at a moment’s notice.” At the end of the day, Ramirez said she feels “satisfyingly exhausted.” She also said, “A lot of library work is now done through a computer screen, which isn’t my favorite way to work. Working at the shelter keeps me on my toes.”

While there is still no set timeline for

the library’s reopening, Ramirez, like much of the community, is anxiously waiting for it to be safe to do so. “I miss the people in the library!” said Ramirez.

“This crisis is a reminder that the library is more than just a housed collection of books, but a gathering place for the public. When I answer calls, people often tell me how important the library is to them and they can’t wait to have it open again. I feel the same way.”

A few blocks from the Carpinteria Library, the Carpinteria Children’s Project (CCP) has become a hub of safety net programs for families in need during the crisis, offering food distribution and support and assistance with accessing essential services. The site closed its preschool in March heeding state guidelines for social distancing and since then, many CCP teachers have found new roles in meeting the community’s needs.

While Lissett Jaramillo was hired as an associate teacher in CCP’s preschool for children ages three to five, she now spends her time helping people of all ages by answering Cares Call Line messages and helping to distribute food to Carpinterians in need, including home deliveries to the elderly and CCP’s weekly drivethrough Foodbank food distribution point (now serving 500 families weekly).

In addition, she offers online Zoom classes to children from the preschool.

Started during the Covid-19 crisis to support Carpinterians who have a need or would like support managing in any way, CCP’s Cares Call Line receives dozens of calls daily. “People call who need aide or just want somebody to talk to,” said Jaramillo, “We lend that listening ear.”

The transition from working in a classroom with young children to being on the front line working with adult community members in often desperate situations was difficult for Jaramillo but through time and training, she adjusted. “It was a quick transition,” she said, “I don’t know if I would say it was a shock, but it was a big transition. It’s two different lines of work. But in both I am helping others, which helps me to be able to consider different people’s points of view. The age

of people I’m speaking with is different, but in my communication style, I’m still lending that listening ear to help people through their issues.”

Jaramillo noted that the work is sometimes overwhelming, but at the end of the day, it “feels very rewarding.” In one Cares call that Jaramillo took, a homeowner asked for assistance for an elderly tenant who was isolated and alone. Jaramillo noted that often the calls are from community members who are trying to help their neighbors.

have pivoted, are redefining the meaning of a community’s adaptability and safety net in times of crisis. Jaramillo’s perspective sums it up: “I really miss the children and being in the classroom with them, but as long as I’m able to help somebody I’ll be more than happy to.”

A 38-foot long grey whale was found dead and washed ashore on the beach at Santa Claus Lane on Saturday, May 16.

The whale had initially washed in at a Ventura beach on May 1 after having died from unknown causes, according to Lili Hartounian, lead stranding coordinator for Channel Islands Cetacean Research Unit (CICRU) of National Oceanic and

Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

When Hartounian arrived in Carpinteria to evaluate the whale, she found it in bad condition and was able to identify it as the same whale that had been beached in Ventura. On that occurrence, the whale was towed off to sea, but winds and tides brought it to the beach at Santa Claus Lane weeks later. “But it was the same whale,” said Hartounian, who also noted that the carcass was in “very bad condi-

tion” when it beached in Carpinteria. On Sunday, the grey whale was towed out to sea once again.

“We don’t know how it died and it’s difficult to determine,” said Hartounian, “but we have sent samples off to testing.”

An increase in grey whale strandings since Jan. 1, 2019, has led NOAA to declare an Unusual Mortality Event for grey whales along the West Coast and Alaska.

In 2019, 35 grey whales stranded in California alone. As of May 12, 2020, NOAA reported an additional 15 in California.

According NOAA, preliminary findings in several of the whales have shown evidence of emaciation, but these findings are not consistent across all whales examined.

Carpinteria is part of the Westcoast Stranding Network which covers 150 miles of coast through Santa Barbara, Ventura and San Luis Obispo counties.

The Channel Islands Marine and Wildlife Institute (CIMWI) works collaboratively with CICRU under the umbrella of NOAA.

A whale had not stranded in Carpinteria for years, said Hartounian. “On a more usual day, it would be dolphins and porpoises—smaller cetaceans,” she noted, “It’s usually one or two a month, though we had two calls last weekend.”

Marine mammals are protected under the Marine Mammals Protection Act (MMPA) under the jurisdiction of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), first enacted in 1972. The MMPA prohibits anybody without an official NMFS-MMPA permit from approaching, touching or taking any part of marine mammals in U.S. waters, beaches or on the high seas, along with the importation of marine mammals and marine mammal products into the U.S. “This means that it’s illegal to collect a whale’s baleen or poach any part of a marine mammal,” said Hartounian.

Community Pool reopens

Recently hired superintendent brings new energy to Aquatics Program

BY ALONZO OROZCO The Carpinteria Community Pool reopened its doors this week under new leadership, as Aaron Syvertson greeted locals for the first time as the facility’s new pool superintendent. Syvertson began his new role on March 23, but because of Covid-19 restrictions, before the May 18 reopening, he had yet to supervise aquatic programming. Instead, Syvertson has been overseeing facility improvements and helping to develop a reopening plan.

Before coming to Carpinteria, Syvertson was the aquatic programs director at the Santa Barbara Family YMCA for three years. Prior to coming to the South Coast, Syvertson had worked in Southern California in the Palm Desert area.

In 2011, Syvertson helped open the Palm Desert Aquatics Center where he hired, trained and scheduled lifeguard and swim instructor staff. He’s also been involved

with water polo and swimming as an athlete and as a high school and collegiate official and coach. At Palm Desert High School, he was named two-time Desert Valley League Coach of the Year for boys and girls water polo.

On the Friday before the pool’s reopening, Syvertson decided to give the site a test run. He invited sisters Kiley, Jamie and Ryann Neushul of the USA Women’s Senior National water polo team and their mother, former UCSB swim coach Cathy Neushul for a swim.

“I coach with Cathy Neushul at 805 Water Polo Club, so I thought her and the girls would be a good outside source to use, and they’re always happy to help out with anything aquatics related,” said Syvertson. According to the new superintendent, Kiley’s gold medal which she won as a member of the 2016

Olympic championship squad and brought to the pool, was a crowd pleaser for pool staff.

The pool opened with restrictions in place established by the Health and Safety Guidelines of Santa Barbara County. Patrons were told they would need to bring their own hand sanitizer, towels and pool accessories.

The shower facilities were open, but the rules recommended that visitors shower prior to entering the facility. Twenty-four-hour notice is required in order to swim the lanes with no congregating on the deck and pool grounds.

“In the short-term, we’re operating on the ‘something is better than nothing’ plan, but I’m hopeful that guidelines for programs beyond lap swimming will come down sooner than later, and we can get back to a cautious sense of normalcy,” said Syvertson. The swim team will most likely return to practice before the water polo team. “It’s difficult to imagine things like water polo games and practices with current social distancing rules,” he said.

ever-popular Junior Lifeguard program is on hold, but Leilanie Smith, aquatics program coordinator, is working with some neighboring programs to craft a proposal that the county will approve.

The return of other programs such as swim lessons will also be tricky. “Swim lessons would be tough, I’ve seen a plan proposed by Mission Viejo where instructors would wear masks and face shields, and I’m not sure how young kids would feel about that,” said Syvertson.

His long-term plans haven’t changed though, they’ve just been postponed.

“I’d like to bring a US Master Swim Meet to the pool, as well as host our own USA Swimming Meet,” said Syvertson.

“I think the 805 is home to world class water polo coaches and programs, and I would like to establish a relationship with a USA Water Polo Club that benefits the kids here in Carpinteria.”

The California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section has announced that the Ford Boys and Girls Cross Country Championships will be returning to Mt. San Antonio College (Mt. SAC) once the fall season sport returns to racing again. Last time the championships were held at Mt. SAC was in 2015. The course was closed due to a comprehensive $87 million-dollar renovation that included a revamped Hilmer Lodge Stadium, track, scoreboard and educational facilities.

The school still sets up a course for its Mt. SAC Invitational held earlier in the season. Cate School sophomore Anna DiSorbo finished third in the 2019 invitational this past season. Carpinteria High School has had many runners compete at the site over the years but hasn’t had anyone run on the campus since 2016, according to Warriors cross country coach Angel Silva. The CIF-SS Prelims had been held at Mt. SAC also but has since moved to Riverside the past few years.

As of this date, the Division Two and Division Four prelims will tentatively run in November along with the Division One, Division Three and Division Five prelims and the CIF-SS Ford Cross Country Championship finals.

The unprecedented global pandemic has pushed Carpinteria Unified School District administrators to come up with creative solutions for not only K-12 instruction, but also the important milestone of high school graduation. To that end, Carpinteria High School Principal Gerardo Cornejo laid out plans for the Warriors’ graduation ceremony in these most-unusual circumstances.

During the upcoming week of May 24 (the specific day and time yet-to-beannounced), graduating seniors will be given a time slot to walk the stage in cap and gown in the school stadium and receive their diploma from CUSD Superintendent Diana Rigby and Principal Cornejo. Social distancing protocols will be observed, and the event will be videoed for later viewing as part of a modified in-person ceremony to be held Friday, June 11, at the high school.

Cornejo stated that these events are for students and immediate family only and stressed that others must stay away from the school.

The modified in-person event will take place in the CHS parking lot, with each graduate and only four immediate family members assigned a

Cate School rallies to support local family

Students from Cate School’s Public Service program revisited a family they’d assisted during the holidays with a few weeks’ worth of groceries in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic. Student volunteers chose to use donated gas funds for groceries to help the family in need, purchasing toilet paper, bread, water, fruit, tortillas, chicken, rice and other goods from a list provided by the mother of the family of six.

Children’s Creative Project has moved their annual I Madonnari festival to a virtual platform this year. The project’s “Chalk for Kids” encourages students to participate in the festival from home, however, in partnering with Village Properties Realtors, the project will provide free chalk to families in a social distanced manner on Saturday, May 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1436 State Street in Santa Barbara.

Parents for Carpinteria High School has raised 74 percent of the funds needed to provide a $50 gift card to every graduating senior in the CHS class of 2020. The cards will be part of senior gift bags given out to the class of 2020 that include a graduation

Canalino Elementary School Principal Jamie Persoon announced Tuesday, May 19, that the last day of school has been moved to Monday, June 15, to allow for two additional days of instruction. “We activated the two ‘evacuation days’ on the calendar,” Persoon explained, “which extended the school year from the original June 11 last day of school to Monday, June 15.” The move provides at least two days of Carpinteria instruction to make up for the week lost due to the campus closing March 16 through 20 when Covid-19 stay-at-home orders were issued.

Sunday, May 10

12:22 a.m. / Attempted Burglary / 1000 block Bega Way

Deputies responded to the Bega building regarding a subject attempting to take gardening equipment. A caller described the suspect as a man in his 20s, wearing dark clothing. The suspect was attempting to load his black Honda SUV, when the caller saw him. The suspect forced entry into a shed behind the Bega building in order to gain access to the gardening equipment. It is unknown if any property was taken from the shed.

The suspect vehicle fled in an unknown direction. Further suspect information is unknown at this time. Multiple pieces of gardening equipment were located around the building.

2:09 p.m. / Theft (golf balls) / 6000 block Via Real

A man called to report a box of stolen golf balls. The caller said he went into his shed and discovered a box of golf ball were missing. The unknown suspect forced entry in order to take the golf balls.

The golf balls were valued at $50.

5:12 p.m. / Littering Citation / 7th Street

A deputy stopped a vehicle for speeding and littering and a man was contacted, cited and released for the violations.

Monday, May 11

9:36 a.m. / Vandalism / S&S Seed

An unknown subject climbed on the roof of the S&S Seed Company and spray painted “TANKA.”

11:02 a.m. / Vandalism / Franklin Creek

An unknown subject went down into the creek and tagged “TANKA” multiple times.

1:36 p.m. / Theft Report / 6000 block Via Real

A man called to report a theft of two bicycle-mounted lights and groceries stolen off his porch. The groceries consisted of canned goods and crackers. The groceries were stored in a shed next to his porch. The homeowner forgot to lock the shed and the groceries were taken from the shed.

3:44 p.m. / Assault / 1300 block Sterling Avenue

A man was punched in the face by an unknown suspect. A group of juveniles walking through the area began to fight with him, and the man got into a fight with one of the unknown juveniles. The group of juveniles fled in an unknown direction. The victim did not desire prosecution.

6:45 p.m. / Stolen License Plate / 1000 block Bailard Avenue

A caller reported that the California license plate was stolen from his 1996 Nissan truck.

Tuesday, May 12

11 a.m. / Theft / 4400 block Via Real

A convenience store employee waived a deputy down to report a vandalism.

The tire air machine had the lock broken off. This allows access to the coins in the

machine. Unknown if suspects took any money.

11:22 a.m. / Vandalism Arrest / 1000 block Casitas Pass Road

Deputies contacted a man who has been the primary suspect for tagging “TANKA” in the area reading in front of a restaurant. During a probation search, deputies located spray paint bottles and a marker. Deputies also recovered a stolen cell phone. Later, deputies located the suspect’s camp. Deputies found a crate of spray paint bottles, clothing, a notebook with “TANKA” written in it, and paperwork with the suspect’s name on it. He was booked at Santa Barbara County Jail.

12:06 p.m. / Disturbance / 1500 block Seacoast Way

Dispatch received a 911 call that dropped. On a call-back, a female stated she and her boyfriend were in an argument. Deputies arrived and determined it was verbal only. The male left the residence for the time being.

7:08 p.m. / Disturbance / Trenora Street and El Carro Lane

A woman called to report that her son was outside of her residence on Trenora Street causing a disturbance. She stated that he was intoxicated and had a knife.

Deputies arrived and found that the man displayed symptoms of intoxication and fled from deputies and resisted arrest. He was arrested and transported to Santa Barbra County Jail.

Thursday, May 14

3:58 p.m./ Beached Whale / Santa Claus Beach

While patrolling the area, a deputy got a report of a beached whale. There were about 50 people gathering around the deceased whale, which was about 30-feet long. The reporting deputy contacted the CA Marine Mammal Stranding Network and advised them of the whale.

He also requested the crowd follow social distancing, and most were cooperative.

Dispatch also contacted Channel Island Marine/Wildlife Institute who requested photos. They advised that it appeared to be the same deceased whale that washed up two weeks previous and had been towed to sea. CIMWI stated they would contact National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for further guidance on how to deal with the whale carcass.

6 p.m. / Possession of Methamphetamine / Hill Road at the railroad tracks

Deputies received a call of a subject with a gun chasing after a male on a bicycle near Hill Road at the railroad tracks.

Deputies checked the area and contacted a 35-year-old transient who matched the suspect description. No weapons were located on him but as a deputy spoke to him, the man dropped a bindle of methamphetamine. He was released from the scene and a complaint was forwarded to the District Attorney’s office for review.

In the wake of the 2018 Montecito mudslides, CVN interviewed local Jaime Diamond about the founding of the Carpinteria Food Pantry alongside fellow volunteer Jessica Clark. Two years later, Diamond has donned a face mask to provide her community with food during a new crisis: the Covid-19 pandemic.

Diamond is the food donation coordinator for the Carpinteria Emergency Food Pantry through the Carpinteria Children’s Project and has acted as the co-coordinator for the Carpinteria Boys & Girls Club food distribution. She is also on the advisory board for the 93013 Fund and serves on several councils serving the Carpinteria Unified School District.

Beyond Diamond’s active volunteering, she and her husband Jason manage their Santa Barbara-based family business, Stardust Sportfishing, with help from their three young fishers, Matt, Molly and Max Diamond.

Mission Possible spoke with Diamond about her emotional experience of food distribution when no corner of Carpinteria is untouched by Covid-19.

In response to the natural disasters of 2017 and 2018, you helped to establish the Carpinteria Food Pantry. What has changed since then and how has the Pantry worked in response to Covid-19?

Honestly, nothing and everything has changed. In some ways, we are just doing the same thing but on a much bigger scale. The biggest difference is our inability to let everyone help who wants to. We cannot accept physical donations from the general public. We don’t get the same interaction with the clients which helped with healing. We have to be overly cautious while handling food and bags and keeping our physical distance from other volunteers. We are still offering help to anyone who needs it.

Tell us about the volunteers you see on a regular day.

At any given point, we have about 20 to 25 people. However, throughout the course of the day, we could have up to 60.

Everybody is happy to be there serving their fellow Carpinterians; it’s somber though for many, realizing the depth and breadth of need, and especially when they see people they know receiving the food.

The scale that we are operating on is huge right now and we anticipate it growing as time goes on. Everybody wants to help and lift each other up; we have quite a few volunteers who are also recipients of our food distribution.

What does your leadership in volunteering mean to you?

I am honored to be able to serve our community in this way. I come from an Italian family and life centered around food. We planned our day and trips around food. Happy? Cook! Sad? Cook!

The answer always was, “Head to the kitchen, and it will all work out.” Of course, we fed lots of people along the way. This is how I can show my love and gratitude to the town I have chosen to live in and raise my family in.

How has access to food been impacted by local schools moving online?

Many of our CUSD students rely on breakfast and/or lunch from school for their meals. Their families rely on that.

Lauren Graf is an undergraduate at California Lutheran University, studying art and communication with an emphasis in advertising and public relations. She is a Carpinteria native with a passion for creating and hopes to work with nonprofits someday. She previously wrote the summers series “Keeping Carpinteria Weird” and “Through the Lens of Gen Z” for Coastal View News.

Coming from an Italian background, Jamie Diamond, co-founder of the Carpinteria Food Pantry, says feeding people is her way of showing love and gratitude to the community.

The school district is offering sack lunches every weekday at Canalino, Aliso and at Monte Vista Park. The Boys & Girls Club is offering sack lunches for their members as well. The 93013 Fund has really stepped in to help in this space.

They are offering weekend food boxes in partnership with The Farm Cart to the high-need families in the district, handed out on Fridays at Aliso. These boxes include beautiful produce as well as eggs, dried beans, rice, bread and other goodies. Our hope is that this bridges the gap from one food distribution to the next for many families.

What does volunteering mean to you?

There were times in my life when I wasn’t strong enough and others were there to lift me up. My father was a lawyer before he passed away suddenly. At his funeral, a sweet couple we didn’t know came up to my family and explained to us that my father had taken on their case pro bono, and they were not the only ones.

There were many more. He never told a soul. He did it because it was the right thing to do. He knew someone needed to give a voice to those who aren’t heard and realized if not him, then who? This is how I can honor his memory.

What can Carpinterians do if they want to help with the Covid-19 response?

I think members of our community have stepped up in so many beautiful ways already. Neighbors to Neighbors making masks, people posting pictures of their walks, friends checking in on each other, senior hours at the grocery store, supporting our local businesses. All of these are ways people should continue to support Carpinteria during this time.

Some of my friends bought gift certificates for their kids to come fishing on our boats when this is all over to support us.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t cry.

What can you share for people who want to help?

Be kind to each other. Everyone is struggling even if you don’t see it. The stress of the situation is too much for any

“It’s our museum,” Fisher said of the history museum that like many institutions, is facing a severe financial setback in this time, “it’s in my heart to do a huge auction, (with more than 40 items).”

Fisher, who received community support last year from an Alcazar Theatre fundraiser to help cover the cost of medication not met by insurance in her cancer fight, said, “when the community got together (on my behalf) it helped immensely.” The auctions are her way of “saying thank you to the community who has done so much for me.”

Carpinteria Valley Museum of History Director David Griggs doesn’t know Fisher personally but is appreciative of her efforts. “She’s stepping up and seeing the need,” he said, “that’s what this community is known for.”

While the museum remains closed, and the museum’s main fundraiser of the monthly arts and crafts markets are also on hold, Griggs and a volunteer are taking advantage of the down time to dismantle each display and to give it a thorough cleaning. Museum volunteers are also assisting with getting the monthly newsletter mailed out.

Just a gentle reminder of Part One – I was headed to surgery at Goleta Valley Hospital to have my right knee replaced. “Twilight” anesthesia had been administered, and I was on a gurney just entering the surgical room. Luckily for me, I was out like the proverbial log before I even got through the door. I’m not sure about the “twilight” part of this anesthesia as I literally knew nothing and felt nothing until several hours later when I slowly woke up in a recovery room. From the waist down I couldn’t feel or move anything, but slowly over the next half hour, I could wiggle my toes and began to have physical sensations.

All the nurses seemed pleased, so my next trip was to my hospital room where I would stay for two nights. I was asked about my level of pain, given an ice pack for my knee, noticed my special hospital socks, and had visits from my husband and the doctor. Once I was situated in bed and actually looked at my knee, I did not want to move—at all—until I had to.

Before I had a nap, I got to order lunch from the menu. The food was OK once I understood how to order the “extras” that added more flavor. In fact, ordering meals was a rather fun adventure to liven up staying in bed, taking pills and getting my blood pressure taken.

After lunch, another nap, then breathing exercises, and then my physical therapist came in to get me out of bed and walking.

Since I hadn’t really moved my leg at all since I first inhabited my bed, I was a bit apprehensive. The therapist was cheerful and full of confidence about my ability to get up and walk—with a walker of course.

Taking my cue from him, I put on a smile, turned my body, and edged slowly off the bed ready for the walker. I expected extreme pain, but it really wasn’t so bad. I walked up the hallway, around the nurses’ station, and back to my room feeling very proud. The therapist helped me back in bed and fixed me a fresh ice pack to go around my knee as my reward.

That first night in the hospital was the

worst although my nurse and the aide were very careful to watch my pain level. The next day after the catheter was removed, things were much more comfortable. Getting up and visiting the bathroom was really not a big deal and got easier every hour. My physical therapist friend came in each morning and afternoon to take me for a walk and to give me new ice packs. But by the third day, I was ready to go home.

As nice as Goleta Valley seemed, home was where I wanted to be.

Once home, we found I did not need a caretaker as suggested. A physical therapist came several days a week for about a month giving me more exercises to work on each time. Then I switched to our local facility for physical therapy until the virus epidemic hit, and I had to learn how to do all this exercising by using my computer. I even had to have my second doctor’s appointment via technology. Can you believe it? My doctor called me by phone to check up on me. He assured me that in six months I would love him, as my original knee joint had been down to bone on bone, and before long, I would have much less pain.

As you must know by now, I survived knee replacement. For me, it was not nearly as agonizing as I had expected. I was careful with the pain pills and eliminated them shortly after returning home as I did not like the way they made me feel. But—why is there always a but?—I did not expect to have absolutely no energy for weeks after surgery. I think I was anemic, or it may be my body was just trying to heal. Now my energy is mostly back. I can sit and stand without pain. I walk at least two miles each day. I can drive. I can squat. I can get down on the floor and, a miracle, get up again. Would I do knee replacement on my other knee if necessary? Yes, yes, and yes! That’s why I’m not giving away my walker just yet.
